- 0:22Speaker 1: have a guest join us, coming to us live from Charlotte,
- 0:25Speaker 1: North Carolina. Check him out on his sub stack, Tom
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Finder, Tom Haberstroh.
- 0:29Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 0:31Speaker 3: It's good to be here, Beaumont. You here for NBA
- 0:33Speaker 3: Cup action?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Dude, I have to say, and we're going to talk.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We got the NBA Cup.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We got a lot of NBA stuff that we're going
- 0:39Speaker 1: to get to, including some really interesting stuff about injuries. Wow,
- 0:43Speaker 1: that sounded dark. But anyway, the NBA Cup just finished.
- 0:47Speaker 1: The Knicks raised that banner, boys. Raised that banner. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: Knicks got the win over the Spurs. We'll talk about
- 0:55Speaker 1: Victor Wimbayama in particular a little bit, in just a couple.
- 0:58Speaker 2: But first, I don't know where you are on this.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I was a skeptic.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Of this in-season tournament. When it came around, it felt
- 1:07Speaker 1: to me to be an example of Adam Silver listening
- 1:09Speaker 1: to podcasts and Bill Simmons cooked something up. And he
- 1:12Speaker 1: was like, yeah, you know, why not? Let's go ahead
- 1:14Speaker 1: and give this a run. I didn't think that you
- 1:16Speaker 1: would be able to create stakes around this. And I
- 1:19Speaker 1: thought the stakes were necessary. But I also think I
- 1:23Speaker 1: kind of sort of ignored that these are still professional athletes.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And like, There are just some people who trophies. It
- 1:29Speaker 1: doesn't matter what the trophy is like. You told Michael
- 1:32Speaker 1: Jordan that it was a trophy to go out there
- 1:34Speaker 1: and win. Michael Jordan is like they're all championships. What
- 1:37Speaker 1: are you talking about? Yes, the NBA championship. Oh, this
- 1:39Speaker 1: new one. OK, it's a new championship. And I the
- 1:43Speaker 1: games feel like they have stakes like the Thunder Spurs
- 1:48Speaker 1: game on Saturday night. It felt like a game in
- 1:52Speaker 1: a tournament of sorts, right? Playoff game feels like you're
- 1:55Speaker 1: going too far, but it felt like a game that mattered.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And I don't know what the ratings are. I don't
- 2:00Speaker 1: know what ticket sales are. I think that those things,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you have to give those time. Like this is a
- 2:05Speaker 1: 20 year project to me. If this is what you're
- 2:07Speaker 1: going to do, it doesn't matter what those numbers are immediately.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But what I did notice, and I felt like this
- 2:11Speaker 1: the first couple of years of it, it feels like something.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And I didn't expect that.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a level of prestige in this that they've
- 2:18Speaker 3: cooked up in three years running. And there isn't really
- 2:21Speaker 3: any sort of postseason importance. You're not getting any sort
- 2:25Speaker 3: of carrot at the end of this season that matters
- 2:28Speaker 3: for playoff positioning or whatnot. The prize is money. The
- 2:32Speaker 3: prize is prestige. It's a cup. It's a trophy. And
- 2:36Speaker 3: it's also an opportunity to go to Vegas. And I
- 2:39Speaker 3: think that's an underplayed element of this is that in
- 2:42Speaker 3: the NBA schedule, it is an absolute grind. It's a
- 2:46Speaker 3: grind for these teams. To get up for November games,
- 2:50Speaker 3: December games, and to try to do this and realize, man,
- 2:53Speaker 3: we got five more months until the playoffs. It is
- 2:59Speaker 3: an absolute grind for these guys emotionally, physically, spiritually. It's
- 3:02Speaker 3: tough to go through an NBA season and realize, man,
- 3:05Speaker 3: I got to get up for this game against the
- 3:07Speaker 3: Wizards on a Wednesday night. The NBA Cup, breaks up
- 3:10Speaker 3: the season and gives them something with stakes to look
- 3:13Speaker 3: forward to and a little bit of respite from the
- 3:16Speaker 3: 82-game grind where you go to Las Vegas and you
- 3:20Speaker 3: go to the NBA Cup. You look at courtside, who's
- 3:23Speaker 3: sitting courtside? It's a big deal. It's all the greats,
- 3:26Speaker 3: the NBA greats. It feels bigger. I think Amazon Prime
- 3:29Speaker 3: taking this and having their production value on the game
- 3:34Speaker 3: Is much better than I think people realize is when
- 3:37Speaker 3: you have, you know, Steve Nash, Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki
- 3:40Speaker 3: and Adam. So Adam Silver was, I think, at the
- 3:44Speaker 3: postgame show for Amazon Prime. He's like, I just want
- 3:46Speaker 3: to give you guys a shout out. You guys do
- 3:48Speaker 3: a great job on this. on this broadcast and he
- 3:52Speaker 3: gave a lot of jabs. He's subtweeting ESPN on this
- 3:57Speaker 3: one because I think he was trying to say we
- 3:59Speaker 3: need to build up these games and you do a
- 4:01Speaker 3: great job of building up these games and making it
- 4:03Speaker 3: feel important. You're on the court. You're on the court
- 4:06Speaker 3: pregame in ways that I feel like the NBA needed
- 4:10Speaker 3: the NBA Cup to keep people invested in November and
- 4:15Speaker 3: December of the NBA schedule. Because 82 games, I think
- 4:17Speaker 3: we can all agree. We'll have this discussion later. It's
- 4:20Speaker 3: too many fucking games. It's too many games. And so
- 4:24Speaker 3: how do you raise the stakes to make these games meaningful?
- 4:27Speaker 3: It's the NBA Cup is one of those answers.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So one thing about professional sports leagues, I think it's
- 4:32Speaker 1: fair to say this generally, but I can definitely say
- 4:35Speaker 1: this with more firsthand experience about the NBA. The NBA
- 4:40Speaker 1: as a league, and when I say the league, I
- 4:42Speaker 1: don't just mean the business entity or the people who
- 4:44Speaker 1: are playing now. I mean league in a very big,
- 4:47Speaker 1: broad sense. Like in the league in the sense that
- 4:50Speaker 1: Robert E. Lee Bob Pettit is still an NBA guy, right?
- 4:53Speaker 1: Like the whole NBA, they love a good weekend to
- 4:56Speaker 1: come hang out with each other, right? It don't matter
- 4:59Speaker 1: if it's Summer League. It don't matter if it's the
- 5:01Speaker 1: All-Star Game, if it's the NBA Finals. Former NBA players
- 5:05Speaker 1: love to go places where the NBA is because one
- 5:08Speaker 1: big thing about being a former NBA player, and Tom,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I don't know if you play this game at Summer League,
- 5:13Speaker 1: it's NBA bingo. There's no telling what former NBA player
- 5:18Speaker 1: you're going to see walking around.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Former coach, right? And they just sit.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And eat at the Shake Shack or any other little
- 5:27Speaker 1: place that you might be, right? Just out there hanging out.
- 5:30Speaker 1: They love that. And so you tell them, oh, did
- 5:33Speaker 1: you say, uh, Las Vegas? I think I can find
- 5:36Speaker 1: a way to get down there. Vegas might be dead,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but now when we show up.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I mean, well, I think, I think what's also interesting
- 5:43Speaker 3: about this is the NBA is moving, uh, seems to
- 5:46Speaker 3: be intimating that they're moving away from Vegas in the
- 5:48Speaker 3: future that it might not be back in Vegas, which is,
- 5:50Speaker 3: I don't know what to make of that. Other than
- 5:53Speaker 3: Adam Silver said before the game on Amazon prime gave
- 5:56Speaker 3: him a little scoop here is that the NBA is
- 5:57Speaker 3: considering moving the NBA cup to, uh, kind of hallowed
- 6:03Speaker 3: grounds in college hoops, maybe a certain arena where the
- 6:08Speaker 3: commissioner might have gone to college.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Oh, no, you got to be fucking kidding me.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And he said some historical venues in college hoops, we
- 6:16Speaker 3: might be moving towards that. So, Bomani, as soon as
- 6:18Speaker 3: I knew that I was going to be on today's
- 6:20Speaker 3: show and we were going to talk about the NBA Cup,
- 6:23Speaker 3: how do you feel about Cameron Indore or Alan Fieldhouse?
- 6:28Speaker 3: I'm going to guess it's Cameron Indore that Adam Silver
- 6:30Speaker 3: is intimating.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:32Speaker 3: How do you feel about them hosting at Cameron Indoor
- 6:35Speaker 3: in Durham for the NBA Cup?
- 6:36Speaker 1: So I don't have a great handle on how big
- 6:38Speaker 1: Allen Fieldhouse is.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And I want to be clear.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Cameron is the single best place for a college basketball game.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Hard stop, right? This isn't just about me hating Duke.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Get the fuck out of here, man. No, no. This
- 6:54Speaker 1: is preposterous on like 85 different. First of all, it's
- 6:59Speaker 1: a really uncomfortable arena. Like let's get that part there
- 7:03Speaker 1: right now. This is, it is not an NBA arena.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It's not up to the standards of what the NBA is.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Um, Also, the hoops come down from the ceiling. It's
- 7:14Speaker 3: not a standard NBA stanchion hoop situation. This is very much,
- 7:18Speaker 3: if you put NBA guys in that arena, it's going
- 7:21Speaker 3: to feel very different. And I don't think that's disqualifying, Bomani,
- 7:25Speaker 3: because we see it in football. They play in very
- 7:27Speaker 3: different conditions, snowing, raining, what have you. In baseball, they
- 7:31Speaker 3: had the Field of Dreams game in the middle of frickin' Iowa.
- 7:34Speaker 3: So I don't think that they're really... it would be
- 7:37Speaker 3: unique in that the NBA cup and in certain situations
- 7:40Speaker 3: might be in a different arena basket situation, environmentally different,
- 7:45Speaker 3: but it is going to be very different compared to
- 7:47Speaker 3: like an NBA arena. It's going to feel very different
- 7:49Speaker 3: than Madison.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It would feel amateur. Like it's just not.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And again, I would say that about if it was
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the Dean dome, I would say this, if they're
- 7:59Speaker 1: going to Pauly pavilion, like, I.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Don't really care. I just don't, this is not, this
- 8:03Speaker 2: is beneath the standard of the league.
- 8:05Speaker 1: To me but for those of you who don't know
- 8:07Speaker 1: unfortunately for us adam silver did go to duke um
- 8:12Speaker 1: and so.
- 8:15Speaker 3: There's that well and camera crazies the nba doesn't have
- 8:18Speaker 3: really really have.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That right well the worst part is those jokers might
- 8:22Speaker 1: just show up and be rooting against everybody you know
- 8:25Speaker 1: what i'm saying just being annoying thinking that it's about.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I'm sorry to drop that bomb on you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 3: I'm sorry. But it is weird that the NBA is
- 8:36Speaker 3: pivoting away from Vegas and in ways that suggest to me, look,
- 8:41Speaker 3: they're not going to go to Madison Square Garden on
- 8:42Speaker 3: this because I do think that the NBA doesn't want
- 8:46Speaker 3: to really go to an NBA arena.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Because it creates... Yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just Dolan getting that little... the benefit of
- 8:56Speaker 3: being able to sell out Madison Square Garden for an
- 8:58Speaker 3: extra venue... It doesn't seem like the other owners really
- 9:01Speaker 3: go for that, which is why I think the Indiana
- 9:04Speaker 3: hosting it or somewhere else in the NBA cities doesn't
- 9:08Speaker 3: really make much sense. But that's why I think all
- 9:10Speaker 3: sides are pointed to this being at Cameron Indoor next
- 9:13Speaker 3: year going forward.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I think, and I said this earlier, this is a
- 9:19Speaker 1: slow build, right? Like there's going to be a point
- 9:22Speaker 1: where you look up. And there are kids who dreamed
- 9:25Speaker 1: of playing in the NBA Cup, right?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Like that's what you like.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I always say when you move a professional sports franchise
- 9:30Speaker 1: into another city, my favorite example is the Arizona Cardinals.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And if you remember for the first 15 years of
- 9:37Speaker 1: their existence, especially when they were in the same division
- 9:39Speaker 1: with the Cowboys, that was a road game for them
- 9:42Speaker 1: every year because that city was full of Cowboys fans.
- 9:44Speaker 1: It takes a generation to build up fans to where
- 9:48Speaker 1: your local team is fully local, right?
- 9:51Speaker 2: In that way. I feel like this is very similar.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Take the time, make it such that the way you
- 9:56Speaker 1: do with Summer League, Summer League is something that for
- 9:58Speaker 1: people who like to do it, every year, it's like, yo.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Are we going to go to Summer League? Okay, cool.
- 10:03Speaker 2: It's in Vegas. You know exactly what it is.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Even if you don't sell a bunch of tickets, you
- 10:08Speaker 1: can get people to actually wind up turning up. If
- 10:10Speaker 1: you put this in an NBA city and the host
- 10:13Speaker 1: city is not in it, people ain't coming. Like you're
- 10:16Speaker 1: talking about putting this in Indiana. I ain't going to
- 10:18Speaker 1: Indiana in December.
- 10:19Speaker 2: What are you, high? This is ridiculous. Stay here. Build
- 10:23Speaker 2: it up. Make it feel like something.
- 10:27Speaker 1: My guess is this sounds a lot more like trying
- 10:30Speaker 1: to negotiate a little bit with Las Vegas. Or Las
- 10:32Speaker 1: Vegas trying to play a little hardball. Because right now,
- 10:35Speaker 1: times is a little hard down there.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think the NBA feels like they got a little
- 10:40Speaker 1: leverage over Las Vegas right now.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Well, I also think that the NBA Cup is awesome.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I just want to say that right here. I was
- 10:46Speaker 3: a big fan of this because the alternative is what?
- 10:48Speaker 3: You're arguing.
- 10:50Speaker 3: The alternative is that they just play regular season games, right?
- 10:54Speaker 3: Like I don't think anybody is out here watching these
- 10:57Speaker 3: type of games in the regular season with the same
- 11:00Speaker 3: kind of numbers and the same kind of passion and
- 11:02Speaker 3: the same kind of pomp and circumstance for a regular
- 11:05Speaker 3: season game that doesn't count for much in terms of
- 11:07Speaker 3: like the actual stakes of the game. Whereas this, it
- 11:11Speaker 3: feels big. And, and Jalen Brunson after the game accepting
- 11:14Speaker 3: the MVP trophy and they're celebrating at, at, at, at
- 11:18Speaker 3: half court, it felt big. It felt like they really
- 11:21Speaker 3: wanted this. They, they stormed the court after they won
- 11:24Speaker 3: in ways that I feel like the NBA needs to
- 11:26Speaker 3: project this image that this stuff matters. These games matter.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And last year when Giannis, he won it and he
- 11:32Speaker 3: was like, yo, everyone chill. We haven't won a championship.
- 11:34Speaker 3: This is not the NBA finals.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I was like, man, look, yeah. You know who got
- 11:38Speaker 2: it right though?
- 11:38Speaker 1: LeBron James, the best, one of the best things that
- 11:42Speaker 1: happened to this cup was the first year. Somebody who
- 11:45Speaker 1: understands how the money works was like, Hey, We're going
- 11:49Speaker 1: to sell this.
- 11:50Speaker 2: We're going to act like, and they're the Lakers, okay?
- 11:53Speaker 1: They've won seven, 18 of these things. They were like, no,
- 11:57Speaker 1: we're going to act like this is a thing. And
- 11:59Speaker 1: I think that that was important. I think context for me,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and I changed the way I looked at it, and
- 12:04Speaker 1: it really hit me in the Saturday night game.
- 12:06Speaker 2: You know what it felt like?
- 12:07Speaker 1: It felt like the great Alaska shootout or the Maui invitation.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And I mean that in a good way, right? Like
- 12:14Speaker 1: every year it would, you know, For those, and I
- 12:16Speaker 1: guess they still do these tournaments, but they're not at
- 12:18Speaker 1: the deal they used to be. But over Thanksgiving or
- 12:21Speaker 1: over Christmas, you had these holiday tournaments, right, in basketball.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And that's where you would look up and be like, hey,
- 12:28Speaker 1: Carolina's playing against the Fab Five.
- 12:29Speaker 2: At the Maui Invitational.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Like, I still remember that game on grainy HSE on cable.
- 12:34Speaker 1: But every year it was a thing. And when I
- 12:36Speaker 1: was watching that game on Thursday, which felt they'd had stakes,
- 12:39Speaker 1: like those dudes cared nothing. about that game, it was like, oh,
- 12:43Speaker 1: sometimes you just got to do a little tweak to it,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and now this feels intense. And that game between two
- 12:50Speaker 1: teams that might wind up in the Western Conference Finals,
- 12:52Speaker 1: that game felt intense, especially since my guy Victor hates
- 12:57Speaker 1: the Thunder. I don't know how the Thunder feel about
- 12:59Speaker 1: the Spurs. I know Chet hates Victor, and Victor hates Chet.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I felt like Victor hates the Thunder, and the Spurs
- 13:06Speaker 1: do too.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Victor gets it, doesn't he? He gets it. Like we
- 13:10Speaker 3: need more Victor being spicy with his comments and messy
- 13:13Speaker 3: with his comments about ethical basketball. Like after that game
- 13:17Speaker 3: feels good to play pure ethical basketball. And we're about
- 13:20Speaker 3: that brand of basketball. I was like, yo, Victor is
- 13:24Speaker 3: here for this NBA life. We need more of this.
- 13:27Speaker 3: We thought that this was going to come from an
- 13:30Speaker 3: American player like Anthony Edwards. And I'm like, oh, out here,
- 13:33Speaker 3: Victor Wembanyama is talking about this in a way that
- 13:38Speaker 3: the NBA needs a lot more antiseptic talking about trash talk,
- 13:44Speaker 3: the other players, and Chet Holmgren, and they do not
- 13:46Speaker 3: like each other. Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren, they go
- 13:49Speaker 3: back to even before the NBA when they were playing
- 13:52Speaker 3: Team USA versus Team France, when they were teenagers, they
- 13:55Speaker 3: went head-to-head, and it was an arrival. Like, watching Chet Holmgren,
- 14:00Speaker 3: and Brian Winters talks about this all the time, he's like,
- 14:01Speaker 3: watching Chet Holmgren and Victor Weminyama playing as teenagers against
- 14:07Speaker 3: each other felt like the future, right? It felt like
- 14:10Speaker 3: this is going to be the NBA future, these long,
- 14:13Speaker 3: seven-foot guys who can play point guard, shoot, can do everything,
- 14:16Speaker 3: super-skilled bigs that should be in different eras, playing back
- 14:20Speaker 3: to the basket around the paint. They're playing like guards
- 14:22Speaker 3: out here. And it feels like this is the next rivalry.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It's OKC and the Spurs. And just like LeBron losing
- 14:30Speaker 3: to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, sometimes you need your
- 14:34Speaker 3: ego just kicked down a little bit before you can really,
- 14:38Speaker 3: really take that next step. And I think Victor Webanyama
- 14:41Speaker 3: doing that to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that
- 14:43Speaker 3: he does not like, he does not care for, and
- 14:45Speaker 3: he's willing to say it out loud, I think that
- 14:48Speaker 3: plus the Knicks loss, I think might be the best
- 14:51Speaker 3: outcome for the NBA in terms of the story. Like
- 14:53Speaker 3: Victor Wemby is going to hurt after this one. And
- 14:56Speaker 3: I think that Victor Wemby, what he did against the Thunder, man,
- 15:00Speaker 3: it's just great theater. I can't wait to see what
- 15:02Speaker 3: happens next in the next chapter between Wemby and Chet
- 15:05Speaker 3: and OKC.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Also, remember that thought you just had there, but in
- 15:09Speaker 1: an analogous situation, when France is kicking our keisters in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Remember, 2024 in Paris
- 15:18Speaker 1: was a very similar situation to what you were outlining
- 15:21Speaker 1: right here.
- 15:22Speaker 2: He forgets nothing.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I think the best part of that game against the
- 15:25Speaker 1: Thunder is when he hit that shot over Alice Caruso. Well,
- 15:29Speaker 1: the best part was him clapping every time Chet missed
- 15:31Speaker 1: a free throw. But him pointing at Alex Caruso and
- 15:35Speaker 1: calling him a little bitch while he ran down the floor.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And I don't care how tall you are, man. Ain't
- 15:40Speaker 1: nobody from France talking to me like that, brother. Your
- 15:45Speaker 1: passport cedes your right to speak to me in such terms, monsieur.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and the block against Chet at the end where
- 15:54Speaker 3: he was just like, yeah, this is mine. You're going
- 15:56Speaker 3: to try to back me down, and I'm going to
- 15:58Speaker 3: sun you. Yeah, sure. I wrote about this for tomthefinder.com,
- 16:02Speaker 3: my sub stack. They didn't challenge him at the rim
- 16:04Speaker 3: the entire game. OK, see, they try to shoot their
- 16:06Speaker 3: way to try to go over the top on Wemby.
- 16:10Speaker 3: He finished the game.
- 16:11Speaker 1: To be clear, as I read this article, when you
- 16:13Speaker 1: say they didn't try to challenge him at the rim
- 16:15Speaker 1: at all, how many shots did they take with him
- 16:17Speaker 1: at the rim in that game?
- 16:19Speaker 2: Zero. Literally.
- 16:21Speaker 3: The player tracking cameras, they have this stack called defensive
- 16:25Speaker 3: field goal percentage at the rim. And they track how
- 16:28Speaker 3: many times you are within five feet of the basket
- 16:31Speaker 3: and five feet of the shooter in an NBA game.
- 16:33Speaker 3: And there were zero such shots in the game against
- 16:36Speaker 3: OKC when Wemby was near the basket. Now, there was
- 16:39Speaker 3: some quibble with that on like, was he five feet
- 16:42Speaker 3: away or six feet away? OK, but the point of
- 16:44Speaker 3: the matter is that Luke Cornett got challenged eight times
- 16:46Speaker 3: in the game in his minutes. And Victor Wemby was
- 16:50Speaker 3: a zero there. zilch nada in that game and so
- 16:54Speaker 3: what OKC tried to do was what the Knicks tried
- 16:57Speaker 3: to do in a sense we're going to shoot and
- 16:59Speaker 3: we're going to neutralize Wemby in some ways but are
- 17:04Speaker 3: we ready to talk about this Knicks game because I'm
- 17:06Speaker 3: here let's.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Go it's right fast because we talked about it I
- 17:10Speaker 1: talked about it on Monday but the plus 20 that
- 17:13Speaker 1: Victor had in seven minutes in the first half of
- 17:15Speaker 1: that game was unreal. Like everything changed when he came
- 17:18Speaker 1: into that game. It was kind of the opposite in
- 17:20Speaker 1: this game where he was a plus 21 in the,
- 17:24Speaker 1: in the, the thunder game was a minus 18 in
- 17:27Speaker 1: this next game.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And it felt like that. I felt like when I
- 17:31Speaker 3: was watching Wemby in this game, it was a different player.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And we learned afterwards after the game, he was tearing
- 17:37Speaker 3: up at the press conference. And he said that he
- 17:39Speaker 3: lost someone today and, We later find out that his
- 17:42Speaker 3: grandmother passed away and he found out about it before
- 17:45Speaker 3: the game on Tuesday morning. And I'll have it in
- 17:48Speaker 3: my notes just as something that I wrote even before
- 17:51Speaker 3: I found out that news. I was like, Victor is
- 17:54Speaker 3: playing like he's doing hero ball on every single play.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Trying to block everything and trying to shoot threes and
- 18:02Speaker 3: try to play hero ball every time down the floor.
- 18:05Speaker 3: And it felt like he was kind of off his game.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Like he felt like he wanted it a little too
- 18:09Speaker 3: much in the sense that he was out here. There
- 18:12Speaker 3: was a play where Tyler Kolick is driving to the hoop.
- 18:16Speaker 3: He leaves OG Ananobi on the left corner three and
- 18:19Speaker 3: tries to collapse to block Tyler Kolick, who he knows
- 18:22Speaker 3: is not going to try on Victor Weminyama because that's
- 18:24Speaker 3: Tyler Kolick. This guy's going to have 15 assists and
- 18:28Speaker 3: no turnovers in a game, and that's his idea of
- 18:30Speaker 3: a good outing. And he leaves OG open in the
- 18:32Speaker 3: corner in a big moment, and OG gets a wide-open three.
- 18:36Speaker 3: And I'm watching, and I'm like, man, it feels like
- 18:40Speaker 3: Feels like he's not making the right decisions out there.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Like he's going after everything. And it's kind of like
- 18:44Speaker 3: he's over eager to make the big home run play.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Took a lot of threes, a lot of like hero
- 18:50Speaker 3: ball threes in this game. It didn't seem like the
- 18:52Speaker 3: same dude that we watched on Saturday against OKC. And
- 18:57Speaker 3: I don't want to belabor the point, but I remember
- 18:58Speaker 3: when I was 21 years old and I lost my grandmother,
- 19:01Speaker 3: I was a mess. I was a mess for a
- 19:04Speaker 3: week after that happened. I don't think I cried that
- 19:07Speaker 3: hard like in my life up until that point when
- 19:10Speaker 3: I lost my grandmother at 21 years old, not to
- 19:12Speaker 3: make excuses for Victor Wimignano's performance, but it explains something
- 19:16Speaker 3: when I'm watching him. I'm like, man, he does not
- 19:18Speaker 3: feel like he's making the right decisions out there. And
- 19:21Speaker 3: that's how I felt the whole game. Yeah.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I mean, I think that makes sense and not to
- 19:25Speaker 1: take anything away from the Knicks, right? Because they, I
- 19:29Speaker 1: hate that I missed that game that the Knicks played
- 19:31Speaker 1: against the magic. Cause I was at the garden on
- 19:33Speaker 1: Sunday when they played with Desmond Bain, did that weird
- 19:36Speaker 1: old move. and threw the ball at OG. Like, I
- 19:39Speaker 1: was a little curious to see what that was going
- 19:41Speaker 1: to look like coming back around. But, hey, man, there's
- 19:45Speaker 1: no reason that the Knicks can't go to the NBA Finals, right?
- 19:48Speaker 1: I feel like every Knicks game is just that's the
- 19:50Speaker 1: question you ask yourself.
- 19:51Speaker 2: It's like, oh, maybe.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I mean, I guess you could say that about just
- 19:53Speaker 1: about the whole East because somebody's got to win it.
- 19:55Speaker 1: But I don't have a compelling argument why not the Knicks.
- 19:59Speaker 3: I think they're the favorites, and I think they're the
- 20:01Speaker 3: clear favorites. You know, the Detroit Pistons have not gotten
- 20:04Speaker 3: to the Conference Finals yet with this group. They're a
- 20:06Speaker 3: young team. The Knicks are not a young team. I
- 20:10Speaker 3: don't know if you recognize this, but Mike Brown did
- 20:13Speaker 3: not play Mikel Bridges in clutch situation last night. Did
- 20:16Speaker 3: not play him. That is not something Tom Thibodeau would
- 20:19Speaker 3: have even dreamed of doing last year. Wouldn't even think
- 20:23Speaker 3: of doing last year. And Tyler Kolek was balling. They
- 20:26Speaker 3: played Jalen Brunson and Tyler Kolek together in the NBA
- 20:30Speaker 3: Cup Championship for long stretches, and it worked. And it
- 20:33Speaker 3: worked because of Mitchell Robinson coming off the bench and
- 20:35Speaker 3: getting 10 offensive rebounds in 18 minutes. and just giving
- 20:38Speaker 3: it to Victor underneath the basket, where, again, Victor was
- 20:42Speaker 3: out here trying to block everything out of position, and
- 20:45Speaker 3: it left him liable for all of these offensive rebounds
- 20:48Speaker 3: by Mitchell Robinson, who would kick it out to three-point shooters,
- 20:50Speaker 3: and Jordan Clarkson dagger three. Jordan Clarkson dagger three. OG
- 20:54Speaker 3: on Ananobi dagger three. This was by design. Clearly, Mike
- 20:58Speaker 3: Brown was out here being like, I want to be
- 21:00Speaker 3: able to play Mitchell Robinson and capitalize on some of
- 21:04Speaker 3: these Victor Wembanyama swatting and getting out of position. and
- 21:08Speaker 3: try to get these offensive rebounds and kick out to shooters.
- 21:11Speaker 3: The Knicks do that better than anybody. More three-pointers made
- 21:15Speaker 3: after offensive rebounds than any team in the NBA. They
- 21:18Speaker 3: shot 47% on threes off of offensive rebounds. And the
- 21:22Speaker 3: reason is it's very strategic. A lot of teams work
- 21:26Speaker 3: very hard to get an open three-pointer on a given possession.
- 21:29Speaker 3: You know when you get a lot of open three-pointers
- 21:31Speaker 3: on a given possession? When everybody's crashing the boards and
- 21:34Speaker 3: you get that offensive rebound, you need to kick out
- 21:36Speaker 3: wide open threes on offensive rebounds. Some coaches don't like
- 21:40Speaker 3: to do that because it feels like, hey man, let's
- 21:42Speaker 3: try to work a better shot here. But the Knicks,
- 21:45Speaker 3: they love this.
- 21:46Speaker 2: They love it.
- 21:47Speaker 3: They have like 20 more three-pointers off of offensive rebounds
- 21:49Speaker 3: than any other team in the NBA. And clearly that
- 21:52Speaker 3: was the differentiator. Was Tyler Kulik making the extra pass?
- 21:56Speaker 3: Mitchell Robinson getting those offensive rebounds. And man, Jordan Clarkson.
- 22:00Speaker 3: You think it matters to Jordan Clarkson and Tyler Kolek,
- 22:02Speaker 3: this NBA Cup, the way that they played and celebrated? Man,
- 22:05Speaker 3: they loved it out there.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Something, first of all, A picture of Jordan Clarkson when
- 22:12Speaker 1: he first gets to the NBA versus a picture of
- 22:14Speaker 1: Jordan Clarkson now is still hilarious to me. You normally
- 22:18Speaker 1: see that happen to people in.
- 22:19Speaker 2: College, right?
- 22:21Speaker 1: It looked like he got sent to juvie for a
- 22:24Speaker 1: crime he did not commit. And then just had to
- 22:28Speaker 1: survive and came out like a whole entirely different person.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I don't know anything about him at all.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I don't know if he talked the same as he
- 22:36Speaker 1: used to, but you go look at Lakers Jordan Clarkson
- 22:39Speaker 1: versus this scared straight didn't take Jordan Clarkson.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And it is a discussion for a different day.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Um offensive rebound is coming back like people have been
- 22:49Speaker 1: writing about this and the numbers are showing it's not
- 22:51Speaker 1: dissimilar to the nfl where running the ball on people
- 22:54Speaker 1: has come back defenses have gotten small and so now
- 22:57Speaker 1: the move into margins is to get a little bigger
- 22:59Speaker 1: and go run over them offensive rebound it seems to
- 23:02Speaker 1: be coming back as a thing crashing the boards where
- 23:04Speaker 1: teams like i remember boot and holes it was the
- 23:06Speaker 1: first person i really remember who was just like yeah
- 23:08Speaker 1: we're not getting offensive rebounds we're sending three people back
- 23:10Speaker 1: and we're going to stop transition baskets however The NBA
- 23:14Speaker 1: is more fun with offensive rebounding because the NBA might
- 23:17Speaker 1: bring back offensive rebounders. Like all these tall guys who
- 23:21Speaker 1: can do a zillion things are great.
- 23:22Speaker 2: We need an Oakley. You know what I'm saying? We
- 23:24Speaker 2: just need some.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Guys who are like Mitchell Robinson is a great example.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I just run hard and crash the boards.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Those guys make life better.
- 23:32Speaker 3: We want physicality in the NBA. It's one of the
- 23:34Speaker 3: reasons why I think the NBA has gone way too
- 23:36Speaker 3: far in the offensive-minded philosophy and freedom of movement where
- 23:40Speaker 3: it feels like a lot of times the referees are
- 23:42Speaker 3: just calling fouls on guys just putting their shoulder into you,
- 23:45Speaker 3: and the defender's like, I mean, how am I supposed
- 23:48Speaker 3: to defend this? And a lot of times, I feel
- 23:50Speaker 3: like physicality was being rewarded in the playoffs last year
- 23:54Speaker 3: and towards the second half of the season when Adam
- 23:56Speaker 3: Silver had admitted, like, yeah, we decided to make a switch,
- 23:59Speaker 3: which is kind of crazy for a commissioner to admit
- 24:02Speaker 3: that they decided to change the rules without telling all
- 24:04Speaker 3: the teams about how they're going to make a rule
- 24:07Speaker 3: change midseason. But I do think that we want more physicality,
- 24:11Speaker 3: which is clear, I think, from fans. They want none
- 24:14Speaker 3: of this grifting to be rewarded when it comes to
- 24:17Speaker 3: driving and James Harden-ification of driving and all that. But
- 24:21Speaker 3: I also think offensive rebounds and how it gets kind
- 24:23Speaker 3: of physical underneath, I think fans want that. I think
- 24:27Speaker 3: teams want to be able to play offensive rebound game
- 24:30Speaker 3: and try to be physical out there. without fearing that
- 24:33Speaker 3: you're going to get called for a foul. So Mitchell Robinson,
- 24:36Speaker 3: Victor Webanyama going at it underneath is good for basketball.
- 24:39Speaker 3: It's also good for the sport. And I think fans,
- 24:42Speaker 3: NBA fans or casual sports fans, whatever large group of
- 24:46Speaker 3: sports fans you want to bring to the NBA back.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I think physicality is a big reason why you might
- 24:51Speaker 3: be able to recruit them back to the NBA.
- 24:54Speaker 1: So this is tangential and kind of going backwards before
- 24:56Speaker 1: we go into break. It's something I meant to get to,
- 24:58Speaker 1: but I lost track of, um, As much as we
- 25:02Speaker 1: talked about that as Victor versus the Thunder, the kids
- 25:06Speaker 1: on the Thunder seem to be different young men than
- 25:09Speaker 1: many of the kids on the Spurs, shall we say.
- 25:12Speaker 1: There is a great contrast that's going on right now.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Those top four teams in the West are fun to
- 25:17Speaker 1: me because they're all so different. You got Jokic and
- 25:21Speaker 1: the guys around Jokic. That's no shade to them. It's
- 25:23Speaker 1: just that Jokic, the numbers he's putting up are absurd.
- 25:27Speaker 1: The The advance numbers are absurd. It just makes it
- 25:31Speaker 1: hard for me to remember anybody else is on the team.
- 25:34Speaker 2: The Rockets, a zillion condors, right?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Everybody's really, really tall. They got a bunch of those dudes.
- 25:42Speaker 1: And they have Kevin Durant, who's not the old Kevin Durant,
- 25:44Speaker 1: but he's still Kevin Durant, right? And with an Ime
- 25:47Speaker 1: Udoka mentality of a basketball team. The Thunder, a bunch
- 25:53Speaker 1: of really good, nice young men. And the Spurs, them
- 25:57Speaker 1: boys go hard. Like, they are coming for you, so
- 26:01Speaker 1: to speak.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Hey, did you realize that Stephon Castle is a Wake Forest,
- 26:06Speaker 3: the son of a Wake Forest player, Stacy Castle, who
- 26:08Speaker 3: played with Rodney Rogers and Randolph Childress, transferred out after
- 26:11Speaker 3: his sophomore year. But on the broadcast, I think they
- 26:15Speaker 3: were talking about it after the broadcast that his father
- 26:17Speaker 3: played in the ACC, and I was like, oh. Oh,
- 26:20Speaker 3: so he picked up a couple things from Rodney Rogers
- 26:22Speaker 3: because the way that Stephon Castle plays, man, it is
- 26:24Speaker 3: just like– He's a second-year player, won two championships at UConn,
- 26:30Speaker 3: but I'm sitting here watching Stephon Castle. I feel total
- 26:32Speaker 3: confidence when he has the ball. And it is very
- 26:35Speaker 3: weird to watch guys that young, even Dylan Harper. Dylan
- 26:39Speaker 3: Harper is a rookie out here, and he just led
- 26:41Speaker 3: the Spurs in scoring in this NBA Cup championship. I
- 26:44Speaker 3: love the Spurs. I put them on my title contender
- 26:46Speaker 3: list before the season in my title tiers column that
- 26:49Speaker 3: I do every Monday. Before the season, I said the
- 26:52Speaker 3: Spurs are going to make a huge leap this year,
- 26:55Speaker 3: and Mitch Johnson, the coach who's replacing Greg Popovich full-time,
- 26:58Speaker 3: he's going to win coach of the year. And they're
- 27:00Speaker 3: making me look really smart with that prediction, except for
- 27:03Speaker 3: on Tuesday night. They kind of fell flat in the
- 27:05Speaker 3: fourth quarter, and it was the Mitchell Robinson and Tyler Kolech.
- 27:08Speaker 2: By the way, rest in peace, Rodney Rodgers. I didn't
- 27:10Speaker 2: have a chance to talk about this. on this show.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And for those of you who are too young to
- 27:13Speaker 1: remember Rodney Rogers, um, as a player, NBA, Rodney Rogers
- 27:17Speaker 1: was cool.
- 27:18Speaker 2: College.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Rodney Rogers was everything, right?
- 27:23Speaker 2: Like this.
- 27:24Speaker 1: We no longer, I don't think we, we college basketball
- 27:26Speaker 1: doesn't operate in the space now where you just have
- 27:28Speaker 1: these guys that were like your favorite college player. And
- 27:31Speaker 1: so the thing with Rodney was he's ACC legend in
- 27:34Speaker 1: the sense that like nobody hates Wake Forest. And so
- 27:37Speaker 1: people did not think that he was going to qualify for, Therefore, most.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Of the schools didn't really recruit him, but Wake Forest did.
- 27:45Speaker 2: They got it together. He wound up in school.
- 27:47Speaker 1: So he wound up being this player that nobody rooted
- 27:49Speaker 1: against because nobody was mad because he didn't go to.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Their school, for example. And he was a force of nature.
- 27:55Speaker 2: He was big. He was a little stocky, right? Like
- 27:58Speaker 2: college power forward size. He was sturdy. He was explosive.
- 28:02Speaker 2: He could shoot. He could do 360 dunks in games.
- 28:06Speaker 2: It was all of it.
- 28:07Speaker 1: And he is Durham, North Carolina's basketball player. Like that
- 28:10Speaker 1: was he's the local guy for people in Durham. You
- 28:13Speaker 1: see him around and everything. It was a tragedy, obviously,
- 28:15Speaker 1: when he got in the accident in the ATV and
- 28:18Speaker 1: that left him paralyzed. But when he died a couple
- 28:19Speaker 1: of weeks ago, I was like probably more closer to
- 28:22Speaker 1: a month or so now.
- 28:23Speaker 2: But it was just like, oh, no, no, no, no.
- 28:24Speaker 1: For those of you who do not understand, this one
- 28:26Speaker 1: hurts because this was a guy that you had to
- 28:29Speaker 1: love if you watched him play basketball.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Yeah. And I got to say, the Durham Bull, Rodney Rogers,
- 28:35Speaker 3: when people say, like, who's Zion Williamson? And we would
- 28:37Speaker 3: make the comp to Rodney Rogers. People thought we were crazy.
- 28:40Speaker 3: But if you saw Rodney Rogers at Wake Forest, you'd
- 28:44Speaker 3: realize there aren't too many people who were built like
- 28:46Speaker 3: that who could do the things like he did.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 3: He was an incredible player. I think a teammate. A
- 28:53Speaker 3: lot of people love playing with Rodney Rogers, who was
- 28:55Speaker 3: sixth man of the year in the NBA. And I
- 28:57Speaker 3: just think it's tragic what happened to him because he
- 28:59Speaker 3: was so invincible. That dude was as strong as anybody
- 29:02Speaker 3: to come through the NBA, have the ATV accident, basically
- 29:06Speaker 3: put him on a ventilator for 17 years. And as
- 29:08Speaker 3: someone who has been around a loved one on a
- 29:10Speaker 3: ventilator for several years, I can't imagine the strength of
- 29:14Speaker 3: he and his wife going through that. And I'm glad
- 29:16Speaker 3: we got a moment to talk about Rodney Rogers because
- 29:19Speaker 3: Talk about beloved players in the NBA and basketball. There
- 29:22Speaker 3: aren't too many people who are more beloved than the
- 29:24Speaker 3: Durham Bull, Rodney Rodgers.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Let me tell you this, too. My favorite Rodney Rodgers detail.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I don't know how much this was made to be.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Rodney took care of his money, but I'll never forget
- 29:33Speaker 1: this once, man. I was at the Circle K on
- 29:36Speaker 1: Highway 55 in Cornwallis, and I'm coming out and walking in.
- 29:40Speaker 1: is Rodney Rogers in his work clothes for the city
- 29:44Speaker 1: of Durham he was a heavy equipment operator like that
- 29:47Speaker 1: was just how he decided to pass his time it
- 29:50Speaker 1: wasn't that he was broke or anything like that he
- 29:52Speaker 1: eventually became a supervisor right but that's how like that's
- 29:56Speaker 1: how Durham Rodney Rogers was in case you were curious.
- 29:59Speaker 2: But yeah, nah, rest in peace to him. Coming up next,
- 30:01Speaker 2: we got some more NBA talk.
- 30:04Speaker 1: It's the holiday season, and it's time to make dreams

- 32:27Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Tom Havishow talking NBA.
- 32:31Speaker 1: On Tuesday, Adam Silver did the press conference, head of
- 32:35Speaker 1: the NBA Cup, and he talked about injuries. And he
- 32:39Speaker 1: made the assertion that they've got the data to indicate
- 32:42Speaker 1: that there are no more injuries this season than there
- 32:45Speaker 1: has been in a previous century. But you've been on
- 32:48Speaker 1: this research-wise for a very long time, and you had
- 32:51Speaker 1: a very interesting point about a bit of rhetorical sleight
- 32:54Speaker 1: of hand that our commissioner was running.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so last week I wrote a big feature for
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yahoo Sports about the two scariest words in the NBA
- 33:03Speaker 3: right now, which is calf strain. Calf strain. We've seen
- 33:07Speaker 3: more calf strains than we have in a very long time.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Injury data doesn't go back all the way to historical data,
- 33:15Speaker 3: but I can comfortably say that we've never seen more
- 33:17Speaker 3: calf strains in the NBA than we have this season.
- 33:19Speaker 3: And statistically, through 20 games, according to InStreetClothes.com's Jeff Stotts,
- 33:24Speaker 3: who's the best, most preeminent injury tracker in sports, he
- 33:28Speaker 3: found that the incidence of calf strains in the NBA
- 33:31Speaker 3: through the first 20 games is up 40% compared to
- 33:35Speaker 3: last year. But here's the thing. The time lost due
- 33:39Speaker 3: to those injuries is up by 200% Beaumont. So what's
- 33:45Speaker 3: happening there? Teams, I talked to coaches around the league,
- 33:49Speaker 3: talked to the medical side, docked sports docs. Some sports
- 33:53Speaker 3: docs that are even on the NBA's payroll, a consultant
- 33:56Speaker 3: to the NBA, Dr. Richard Ferkel, who operated on Klay
- 33:59Speaker 3: Thompson's Achilles tear, and also on Steph Curry's ankle injuries,
- 34:04Speaker 3: DeMarcus Cousins' Achilles tear. This is the preeminent foot and
- 34:08Speaker 3: ankle doc in the NBA. They're all saying something's up.
- 34:13Speaker 3: And we're all kind of terrified of the idea that
- 34:17Speaker 3: today's game is just too much force on these bodies.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Too many games, too many up-tempo games, like the game
- 34:26Speaker 3: is faster, and there's so many three-pointers now, Bomani, that
- 34:30Speaker 3: they got to defend 40 feet out now in ways
- 34:34Speaker 3: that you would see a lot of pick-and-roll actions back
- 34:36Speaker 3: in Rodney Rogers' days. It was 12 feet in, right?
- 34:39Speaker 3: You set a screen at the top of the key,
- 34:41Speaker 3: and then you go try to go downhill at the rim. Now,
- 34:44Speaker 3: as you're going downhill, building up speed, the runway is
- 34:47Speaker 3: 50 feet long. A lot of these screens are now
- 34:50Speaker 3: being set at half-court. And so think about the geometry
- 34:53Speaker 3: of the game and the force that these guys are
- 34:55Speaker 3: playing with where you get downhill now, Bomani, and you're
- 34:59Speaker 3: running full speed for 40 feet instead of 10 feet.
- 35:03Speaker 3: And you got to stop on a dime like these
- 35:04Speaker 3: decels that you see Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Denny Abdiah,
- 35:09Speaker 3: Stephon Castle. James Harden was great at this when he
- 35:12Speaker 3: was at his peak. The decels, the step backs, all
- 35:16Speaker 3: of this is in the stew for why we're seeing
- 35:19Speaker 3: more calf strains And Achilles tears. There were seven Achilles
- 35:24Speaker 3: tears last year, which was a league record. And three
- 35:28Speaker 3: were on the same team. The Indiana Pacers, Tyrese Halliburton,
- 35:31Speaker 3: Isaiah Jackson. and James Wiseman. Bomani, how many 23-year-olds can
- 35:35Speaker 3: you remember tearing their Achilles like James Wiseman did? It's
- 35:39Speaker 3: just a very old person injury that we would hear
- 35:42Speaker 3: when we were growing up of like our uncle who
- 35:44Speaker 3: went out here and tried to play pickup basketball or
- 35:46Speaker 3: your aunt who was going to play tennis and tore
- 35:48Speaker 3: their Achilles. We're seeing teams now holding out their guys
- 35:53Speaker 3: longer in these calf strains, and the latest ones are
- 35:55Speaker 3: Evan Mobley and Austin Reeves. They're holding them out for
- 35:59Speaker 3: longer now And I think a lot of it has
- 36:01Speaker 3: to do with the kind of PTSD that you see
- 36:04Speaker 3: from Tyrese Halliburton in the NBA finals tearing his Achilles
- 36:07Speaker 3: after a calf strain. And also Damian Lillard tearing his
- 36:11Speaker 3: Achilles after his blood clot in his calf. You saw
- 36:16Speaker 3: Jason Tatum tearing his Achilles. So when Adam Silver is
- 36:19Speaker 3: coming out here on the moments before the NBA Cup
- 36:22Speaker 3: final in which Victor Wimbanyama is coming off the bench
- 36:25Speaker 3: because of a calf strain, he's saying we haven't seen
- 36:28Speaker 3: injuries this low. in three years, but he is concerned
- 36:32Speaker 3: about the soft tissue injuries. And I have the data
- 36:35Speaker 3: to prove it. These soft tissue injuries are knocking these
- 36:39Speaker 3: players out for much longer. And stars are not playing
- 36:42Speaker 3: nearly as much as they used to. And that is
- 36:45Speaker 3: a big problem for the NBA because the stars are
- 36:48Speaker 3: what makes money in the NBA. These contracts, Amazon Prime, NBC,
- 36:53Speaker 3: they're not shelling out billions of dollars to watch the
- 36:56Speaker 3: B teams out here. They're shelling out billions of dollars
- 36:59Speaker 3: because Victor Wembenyama and John Morant and Giannis Antetokounmpo. But
- 37:04Speaker 3: as of last week, none of those guys were playing
- 37:06Speaker 3: because of these calf strains. And it's a big, big
- 37:08Speaker 3: problem in the NBA.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And it seems somewhat unsolvable because they're not going to
- 37:12Speaker 1: dial back the style of play. Like we talked about
- 37:14Speaker 1: this with Benny Goodwill last week, that once new technology
- 37:18Speaker 1: is introduced into any system or any universe, people are
- 37:22Speaker 1: loathe to dial it back, no matter.
- 37:24Speaker 2: How much harm it ultimately proves to cause. This is
- 37:27Speaker 2: the smartphone dilemma.
- 37:28Speaker 1: It's that, boy, we sure need to use these a
- 37:30Speaker 1: little bit more, but it can do so many cool
- 37:31Speaker 1: things and people are not going to stop doing.
- 37:33Speaker 2: The cool things.
- 37:34Speaker 1: The game evolved to a place where I think another analogy,
- 37:38Speaker 1: a point that I make that I think is similar
- 37:40Speaker 1: on this is the reason they didn't pass the ball
- 37:43Speaker 1: in football as much in the past as they did
- 37:45Speaker 1: now is passing is really, really hard. And so they
- 37:47Speaker 1: figured out ways to make passing easier. But as it goes,
- 37:50Speaker 1: they're like, why can't we develop more good quarterbacks? Because
- 37:52Speaker 1: this is unnatural. What we're asking for them to do, right?
- 37:55Speaker 1: The technology has gone to a place that the people
- 37:58Speaker 1: can't keep up with in the technology of basketball, which
- 38:00Speaker 1: is these schemes and in part, like the size of
- 38:03Speaker 1: the players and everything else. It can't keep up.
- 38:07Speaker 2: But it's not going to get dialed back. So what
- 38:09Speaker 2: do you do?
- 38:09Speaker 1: Do you turn it now into a sport that runs
- 38:12Speaker 1: like hockey where you have like three lines of people
- 38:14Speaker 1: and they only play like 20 minutes a game? Like
- 38:16Speaker 1: what's the coach with the Grizzlies who's starting off with
- 38:18Speaker 1: his approach this year of we're just gonna play really
- 38:20Speaker 1: hard for four minutes at a time. I don't think
- 38:23Speaker 1: that's a sustainable way to play. I don't even know
- 38:25Speaker 1: if he's still doing that nonsense, but that was his
- 38:27Speaker 1: plan coming into it. Like, I don't know what you're
- 38:30Speaker 1: supposed to do now that all these advents have been introduced,
- 38:34Speaker 1: how you can get it to dial back.
- 38:36Speaker 3: You cut 20 games from the schedule. That's how you
- 38:37Speaker 3: do it. Yeah. Well, there's that. You know, in, in
- 38:41Speaker 3: Tuesday's press conference, Adam Silver said, you know, we're studying this. We, we,
- 38:45Speaker 3: we are concerned that star players are not playing as
- 38:48Speaker 3: much as they used to. That's a real problem. But
- 38:51Speaker 3: he said, there is no silver bullet here. And I
- 38:53Speaker 3: was wondering if that was a lowercase S silver or
- 38:56Speaker 3: an uppercase S because there is a silver bullet and
- 38:59Speaker 3: it's to reduce the games in the schedule to build
- 39:01Speaker 3: in more recovery days. And I think the NBA has
- 39:03Speaker 3: a marketing problem. And, rest. It's not rest. It's not
- 39:08Speaker 3: like they're kicking back and by the beach, by the
- 39:12Speaker 3: pool and resting their bodies. It's recovery. The bodies can't
- 39:17Speaker 3: simply keep up with the pace of the game and
- 39:20Speaker 3: the travel and the 82 games. And you can say, Hey,
- 39:23Speaker 3: back in the day, look, man, if you stack up
- 39:27Speaker 3: the number of possessions that was in the 98 NBA finals,
- 39:28Speaker 3: which the Utah Jazz and the Chicago Bulls, and you
- 39:32Speaker 3: stack up against the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder,
- 39:36Speaker 3: it is Mount Everest to Mount McKinley. It is two
- 39:38Speaker 3: very different equations we're talking about, the number of possessions
- 39:42Speaker 3: that are in every game. So you can say, hey,
- 39:44Speaker 3: MJ was out here averaging 40 minutes a game, and
- 39:47Speaker 3: Shea Gildress Alexander's averaging 30 minutes. And they can't play
- 39:49Speaker 3: 82 games? If you look at the number of possessions
- 39:53Speaker 3: that these guys are playing, running up and down the floor,
- 39:56Speaker 3: and mind you, possessions is not some ephemeral idea. Possessions
- 40:00Speaker 3: is running up and down the floor. It is trips
- 40:04Speaker 3: up and down the floor. It's as if we added
- 40:06Speaker 3: two innings to a baseball game and wondered why all
- 40:09Speaker 3: these pitches weren't throwing complete games anymore. It's because the
- 40:13Speaker 3: unit of measurement in the NBA, yes, people talk about
- 40:15Speaker 3: 48 minutes. It's still 48 minutes. but it's not in
- 40:18Speaker 3: the number of possessions. The game is so much faster.
- 40:21Speaker 3: The geometry of the game is so much wider that
- 40:24Speaker 3: you're asking bigs to play like guards out here and
- 40:28Speaker 3: defend the three-point line when Kevin McHale wasn't out here
- 40:31Speaker 3: defending the three-point line and pick-and-roll coverages like they do now.
- 40:35Speaker 3: It's so different of a sport, and I think the
- 40:38Speaker 3: NBA has to get everybody together. I'm talking stakeholders on
- 40:41Speaker 3: the ownership side. I'm talking the medical side, the players' side.
- 40:46Speaker 3: and have them come together and figure out a way
- 40:49Speaker 3: to reduce games in the schedule without losing revenue. And that,
- 40:52Speaker 3: as we're both econ guys, figuring a way to lower
- 40:57Speaker 3: the supply of games but raising the demand, I feel
- 41:02Speaker 3: like there's a sweet spot here. But man, these franchise
- 41:05Speaker 3: values are going way up, and I don't know if
- 41:07Speaker 3: all of these owners are going to be trying to
- 41:09Speaker 3: hear that.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we are at a point of what they call
- 41:11Speaker 2: Pareto optimality.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Right. Like you are trying to figure out how to
- 41:17Speaker 1: make this one thing better without hurting this other thing. Right.
- 41:21Speaker 2: And that's, that's their trick bag.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And for context, for people, the top five seasons for
- 41:27Speaker 1: fastest pace of play in the NBA top 15, excuse me,
- 41:31Speaker 1: are all before 1990.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Number 16 is 2019, 2020 season. And then number 17
- 41:34Speaker 2: is this season.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Currently. I bring that up to say, The pace of
- 41:44Speaker 1: the game in the 70s and 80s was a fast
- 41:48Speaker 1: up and down, but the side-to-side game was entirely different.
- 41:53Speaker 1: And I think that's a big change that's happening now
- 41:55Speaker 1: is what is demanded of you, not just that it's
- 41:58Speaker 1: moving fast, going back and forth, but what you got
- 42:00Speaker 1: to do once you get to that other end of
- 42:02Speaker 1: the floor.
- 42:03Speaker 2: That part has changed dramatically.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Um a great deal but you're right you can't have
- 42:07Speaker 1: your best players not just dropping like flies but they're
- 42:09Speaker 1: young players and this isn't like the nfl where you
- 42:12Speaker 1: just roll another guy up and then oh suddenly we
- 42:14Speaker 1: have another star right like the nba nfl is built
- 42:17Speaker 1: for those guys to swap in and out like that
- 42:19Speaker 1: this league ain't that and you hope they figure it
- 42:21Speaker 1: out soon because they got a great rookie class in
- 42:23Speaker 1: the nba this year a really really good one and
- 42:26Speaker 1: you can't help but wonder if there's gonna be dropping
- 42:28Speaker 1: by the time they're 26.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's what the worry is, is that not
- 42:32Speaker 3: only are you seeing a lot more injuries in the NBA,
- 42:34Speaker 3: but when they come into the league, they've got a
- 42:37Speaker 3: lot of specialization injuries, right? Is that when we were
- 42:41Speaker 3: growing up, Bomani, if you were good, you were a
- 42:44Speaker 3: great athlete, you're playing four different sports year round. Not
- 42:47Speaker 3: year round, but in seasons.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:49Speaker 3: You're going to play basketball, you're going to play football,
- 42:50Speaker 3: you're going to play baseball, you're going to play lacrosse, hockey,
- 42:52Speaker 3: whatever it is. But now these guys are coming into
- 42:55Speaker 3: the NBA with like, way more mileage on those tires
- 42:59Speaker 3: and joints than you'd expect given that they're 20 years old.
- 43:03Speaker 3: And so that's the worry is like for the NBA
- 43:05Speaker 3: and Adam Silver talked about it. Vinny Goodwill asked the
- 43:07Speaker 3: question shots to Vinny on this is like, what do
- 43:10Speaker 3: you attribute this to? And Adam Silver said, we have
- 43:14Speaker 3: to look at this holistically, not just at the NBA,
- 43:16Speaker 3: but coming into the league. It's not an easy problem
- 43:19Speaker 3: to solve. I'm writing about it because I'm noticing the
- 43:22Speaker 3: medical data and I'm noticing all the injury data and
- 43:25Speaker 3: seeing that star players now, Bomani, are missing one out
- 43:28Speaker 3: of three games, whereas just a couple years ago, it
- 43:30Speaker 3: was one out of five. One out of three games,
- 43:33Speaker 3: a star player is going to miss in the NBA now,
- 43:35Speaker 3: which is not good for ticket prices and it's not
- 43:37Speaker 3: a short-term hit. I think it's a long-term hit that Fans,
- 43:42Speaker 3: when they go and they take their kids to a
- 43:44Speaker 3: game thinking LeBron's going to play or that Victor Rembenyama's
- 43:47Speaker 3: going to play and they don't because they're on the
- 43:50Speaker 3: second night of a back-to-back and you're like, I just
- 43:52Speaker 3: paid $ 400 to take my family to this game and
- 43:55Speaker 3: the guy wasn't there, that's a long-term hit. That means
- 43:58Speaker 3: that ticket buyer is going to think twice the next
- 44:01Speaker 3: time he can take his family to an NBA game
- 44:03Speaker 3: and he's going to probably spend that money elsewhere. And
- 44:05Speaker 3: that's what the NBA doesn't want. They don't want these
- 44:07Speaker 3: fans who would punt down $ 400 to go to a
- 44:11Speaker 3: game and take their family and potentially lose that young
- 44:14Speaker 3: kid fan for life because they realize, hey, man, it
- 44:17Speaker 3: doesn't matter to these games. Even though that's not true,
- 44:19Speaker 3: it's just the injuries, the bodies aren't able to withstand
- 44:23Speaker 3: 82 games like they used to. So it's a real
- 44:25Speaker 3: big problem. And I do think that the NBA has
- 44:28Speaker 3: the data. They just got to figure out how we
- 44:31Speaker 3: negotiate this with the players union, and the ownership and
- 44:35Speaker 3: all of the facts and the data has to come
- 44:37Speaker 3: together to find a solution. This is not easy for
- 44:39Speaker 3: Adam Silver.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Yeah, because most of those players would not give back
- 44:42Speaker 1: money to get more time off.
- 44:46Speaker 3: You have to make a compelling argument that they wouldn't
- 44:49Speaker 3: lose money. And so that's where you got to get
- 44:51Speaker 3: the best economist in the room or best salesman in
- 44:53Speaker 3: the room to explain to the players union that if
- 44:56Speaker 3: we reduce the games in the schedule... Revenue-wise, we can
- 45:00Speaker 3: make that up on the back end with national TV
- 45:02Speaker 3: games or with more eyeballs on the games because each
- 45:06Speaker 3: game matters more and there's not back-to-backs anymore that more
- 45:10Speaker 3: people are going to watch. And they have the storylines.
- 45:12Speaker 3: I keep coming back to this. In the NFL, in
- 45:15Speaker 3: fantasy football, I am constantly looking at my app to
- 45:19Speaker 3: the lead-up four days before the game to see who's
- 45:21Speaker 3: going to play. There's storylines everywhere. are about the Saturday
- 45:26Speaker 3: and Sunday football games with college football and the NFL.
- 45:28Speaker 3: And they breathe these stories and they talk about these
- 45:31Speaker 3: stories and the matchups and the dynamics at play for
- 45:34Speaker 3: days on end. We don't have that in the NBA.
- 45:37Speaker 3: And I feel like if we reduce the schedule down,
- 45:39Speaker 3: we're going to have a lot more energy and a
- 45:42Speaker 3: lot more stakes to these games because there's time to
- 45:45Speaker 3: talk about it. And that oxygen, I think, is going
- 45:48Speaker 3: to be a real big part of this equation going forward.
- 45:51Speaker 2: All right, I want to talk.
- 45:51Speaker 1: About another story that is interesting that has come out,
- 45:54Speaker 1: which is.
- 45:55Speaker 2: That Joe Lacob.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Joe Lacob, for those of you who don't know, is
- 46:01Speaker 1: the owner of the Golden State Warriors. I mean, that's
- 46:04Speaker 1: a first class dork right there. But he's a dork
- 46:07Speaker 1: that I had to give him this. When they were
- 46:09Speaker 1: winning 50 games and they were telling us that Mark
- 46:12Speaker 1: Jackson was holding them back and he was making all
- 46:14Speaker 1: these faces at him during games. I was like, well,
- 46:17Speaker 1: how good do you expect Steph Curry and Klay Thompson
- 46:20Speaker 1: to be? And score one for Joe Link. He was there,
- 46:26Speaker 1: but then he went too far. And he said there
- 46:28Speaker 1: were light years ahead of everybody else. And those light
- 46:31Speaker 1: years didn't really last that long.
- 46:34Speaker 3: What's the most valuable franchise in the NBA right now, Bomani?
- 46:36Speaker 3: And would you have believed when I told you that
- 46:38Speaker 3: with Mark Jackson and all the smirks that he was
- 46:41Speaker 3: giving to Mark Jackson that it would one day be
- 46:43Speaker 3: the Golden State Warriors by a mile? You would have
- 46:45Speaker 3: thought I was crazy.
- 46:46Speaker 2: No, in a world with the New York Knicks in it.
- 46:50Speaker 1: It is crazy. He's pulled this off. He just has
- 46:54Speaker 1: this knack of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Remember when they won the championship and he gave credit
- 46:59Speaker 1: to whoever it was in the front office for getting
- 47:01Speaker 1: guys to all those great contracts? Translation, way to work
- 47:05Speaker 1: these suckers and not give them as much money as
- 47:07Speaker 1: they probably deserve.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I was like, what are you talking about? He said
- 47:10Speaker 2: something crazy about Steph, I feel like, up there. I
- 47:13Speaker 2: was like, what are you doing? His latest, what are
- 47:16Speaker 2: you doing?
- 47:17Speaker 1: After, by the way, the two timeline situation where he
- 47:19Speaker 1: tried to win for now and later, which was hubris,
- 47:23Speaker 1: just the ultimate hubris.
- 47:24Speaker 2: You can't do that in this league. But anyway, now
- 47:28Speaker 2: we are here.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Some fans sent him an angry email about the current
- 47:33Speaker 1: state of the franchise. And for whatever reason, and this
- 47:36Speaker 1: happens from time to time, Joe Lacob replied. He, as
- 47:41Speaker 1: the kid said, had time, um, I am trying to
- 47:46Speaker 1: find word for word what it is.
- 47:48Speaker 2: That Joe Lacob said.
- 47:49Speaker 1: But the long of the short, Steve Kerr has said
- 47:52Speaker 1: that he didn't have a problem with this reply to
- 47:55Speaker 1: the email, which I can't promise you that I would
- 47:57Speaker 1: feel that way. But Lacob said to the person who
- 48:00Speaker 1: said that Jimmy Butler was being utilized improperly because the
- 48:03Speaker 1: roster didn't have enough size. And he said he was
- 48:05Speaker 1: really frustrated. And Joe Lacob replied, you can't be as
- 48:08Speaker 1: frustrated as me. I am working on it.
- 48:11Speaker 2: It's complicated. Style of play. Coach's desire regarding players. League trends.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Jimmy is not the problem. And I felt like Jimmy's
- 48:20Speaker 1: the only person to come out of this unscathed.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Man, Steve Kerr can read that and say, that's a
- 48:28Speaker 3: shot at me. And anytime you have owner emails going
- 48:31Speaker 3: out in public, not a great look. It's not something
- 48:34Speaker 3: you as an NBA head coach want to deal with
- 48:37Speaker 3: at a press conference and have to answer for that.
- 48:39Speaker 3: But it's very clear that Joe Lacob wants Jonathan Kaminga
- 48:42Speaker 3: and the Moses Moody experiment to work in his favor
- 48:46Speaker 3: because he was out here bragging about the two timelines
- 48:48Speaker 3: and saying, hey, we can win championships and develop players
- 48:52Speaker 3: at the same time. The problem with that is if
- 48:55Speaker 3: Jonathan Kaminga and Moses Moody aren't it, you can't go
- 48:59Speaker 3: back and redo those picks, Bomani. That's the thing about
- 49:02Speaker 3: being right in the draft is you only got those
- 49:04Speaker 3: two swings. And if you strike out on those two swings,
- 49:07Speaker 3: then you got to pack it up and say, all right,
- 49:09Speaker 3: We made a mistake and we're getting off of this
- 49:12Speaker 3: and we're going to go get some veterans. They still
- 49:14Speaker 3: haven't moved off the Jonathan Kaminga thing. They haven't. And
- 49:18Speaker 3: we're now here where he... making $ 22 million a year
- 49:22Speaker 3: to be getting DMP CDs. And Steve Kerr does not
- 49:26Speaker 3: want Jonathan Kaminga out there. He's made it very clear
- 49:29Speaker 3: that by benching him in these games in which they
- 49:31Speaker 3: need help. I just did the Blazers game. The Blazers
- 49:34Speaker 3: are 3-0. against the Golden State Warriors, and Jonathan Kaminga
- 49:37Speaker 3: the other night didn't play a single minute in that
- 49:40Speaker 3: game in which Stephen Curry had 48 points. It is
- 49:43Speaker 3: not a good situation there in Golden State, under. 500
- 49:46Speaker 3: here with Jonathan Kaminga in the doghouse, and I gotta say,
- 49:50Speaker 3: the more that this plays out, I think the Golden
- 49:52Speaker 3: State Warriors are losing leverage, and this is the problem
- 49:56Speaker 3: by bringing back Jonathan Kaminga when everyone knows he's not
- 49:58Speaker 3: here for the long haul, is the more that this
- 50:00Speaker 3: plays out, the larger chance that this is a situation
- 50:04Speaker 3: where they have to give up an extra first-round pick
- 50:07Speaker 3: to move off of this guy. It's not a good situation.
- 50:10Speaker 3: And Joe Lacob, at some point, he can't be sending
- 50:13Speaker 3: those emails out with those kind of particulars because in
- 50:16Speaker 3: this day and age, it's going to get out, dude.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, Jimmy, you could argue, is not the
- 50:21Speaker 1: player that he was, but the player that he is
- 50:23Speaker 1: is still really good. Steph is not the player that
- 50:26Speaker 1: he was, but the player that.
- 50:27Speaker 2: He is, is still really good. Like, they're top two guys.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I mean, Jimmy's putting up 51 from the floor, 44
- 50:34Speaker 1: from three, 85 from the line. Like, that's what you're
- 50:38Speaker 1: getting out of Jimmy Butler. Like, they still have it
- 50:42Speaker 1: at the top. But if you weren't going to play Kaminga,
- 50:46Speaker 1: then it just had... I mean, they got off a
- 50:47Speaker 1: Wiseman a long time ago, right? I have been fascinated
- 50:51Speaker 1: by the fact that this one, he just can't let
- 50:54Speaker 1: go of.
- 50:54Speaker 2: And I said last.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Year, I got a lot of hell for this, where
- 50:56Speaker 1: I was like, the discussions were coming up about the
- 50:59Speaker 1: idea of LeBron going to the Warriors, which would never happen,
- 51:01Speaker 1: but I'm like, Hey, don't give up your best young
- 51:03Speaker 1: player in order to make that trade. I was like,
- 51:05Speaker 1: I would keep coming under them circumstances, but not if
- 51:07Speaker 1: it's going to be, if this is what you do.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:10Speaker 3: It's not because I don't think it's, I don't think
- 51:12Speaker 3: it's Jimmy Butler's fault that they're at where they're at.
- 51:14Speaker 3: I think it's a roster problem. I think right now
- 51:16Speaker 3: the Golden State Warriors have no athleticism. And the one
- 51:19Speaker 3: guy who does seem to have it in terms of
- 51:20Speaker 3: like the ability to jump really high and finish at
- 51:23Speaker 3: a high level, Jonathan Kaminga can't get on the floor
- 51:25Speaker 3: because he's, Steve Kerr flat out does not trust that guy.
- 51:29Speaker 3: It's very clear that he does not trust that guy
- 51:31Speaker 3: to play the kind of basketball. And that's why I
- 51:33Speaker 3: think style of play is doing a lot of work
- 51:36Speaker 3: in that email because I think what he wants to
- 51:38Speaker 3: say or what the implication is, he's not going to
- 51:41Speaker 3: be playing the Steve Kerr brand of basketball. The IQ
- 51:44Speaker 3: that you need on the basketball court to play with
- 51:46Speaker 3: Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, I don't think
- 51:49Speaker 3: Jonathan Kaminga is about that life. And we're going to
- 51:52Speaker 3: try to figure out the best situation here, but that's
- 51:55Speaker 3: the coach. And Jimmy Butler is not the problem. It's
- 51:58Speaker 3: that they have Al Horford, who's hurt and dealing with
- 52:01Speaker 3: a very 40-year-old injury that LeBron knows very well, sciatica.
- 52:05Speaker 3: This is a team that does not have much athleticism,
- 52:07Speaker 3: and they're forced to play a lot of three-guard lineups.
- 52:10Speaker 3: And in today's NBA, man, it can't be Steph Curry
- 52:14Speaker 3: is dropping 48 points in a loss. It can't happen
- 52:17Speaker 3: when you have a guy who's at this stage of
- 52:20Speaker 3: his career, done this much for your franchise, and he
- 52:24Speaker 3: is the reason they're a number one evaluation team. on
- 52:26Speaker 3: the NBA chart and up there with the Dallas Cowboys.
- 52:29Speaker 3: He is the reason, and he can't be out here
- 52:32Speaker 3: averaging 30 points a game and being on an under
- 52:35Speaker 3: 500 team. That is a problem. And the Golden State Warriors, man,
- 52:38Speaker 3: I believed in them this year, but a lot of
- 52:40Speaker 3: it was hinged on a 40-year-old Al Horford doing the
- 52:42Speaker 3: things he was doing for Boston last year, and he
- 52:44Speaker 3: hasn't been MIA for a lot of this season.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Steph Curry turns 38 in March.
- 52:52Speaker 3: The thing about he and Chris Paul is we don't
- 52:54Speaker 3: typically see guys this small playing this deep into their
- 52:58Speaker 3: careers and still being effective. Chris Paul playing 82 games,
- 53:02Speaker 3: starting 82 games for the Spurs last year is just
- 53:04Speaker 3: unheard of. Steph Curry averaging 30 at age 38 is
- 53:10Speaker 3: unheard of. It's unheard of to see him playing at
- 53:13Speaker 3: age 38 at the size that he is, much less
- 53:16Speaker 3: being one of the top 10 players in the league.
- 53:18Speaker 3: But that's where we're at with Steph Curry. And maybe
- 53:20Speaker 3: if you give one thing to Joe Lacob is like,
- 53:23Speaker 3: we had to do the two timeline thing because we
- 53:25Speaker 3: could never expect Stephen Curry and Draymond Green and Jimmy
- 53:29Speaker 3: Butler to be out here playing at this kind of level.
- 53:32Speaker 3: We had to get some young players in here to be...
- 53:34Speaker 3: fulfill that that pipeline but man when you have a
- 53:38Speaker 3: Steph Curry averaging 30 points a game on 50% shooting
- 53:42Speaker 3: and 40% from three you got to build for now
- 53:45Speaker 3: and now it's really hard to do that when Jonathan
- 53:47Speaker 3: Kaminga has zero trade value.
- 53:49Speaker 2: I feel like.
- 53:52Speaker 1: I have always thought the world of Steph Curry right
- 53:56Speaker 1: like I covered that tournament in 08 right the the
- 53:59Speaker 1: games at Raleigh like I've been there for a lot
- 54:01Speaker 1: of I've seen him play at Cameron Indoor Stadium at
- 54:03Speaker 1: Davidson right And then he got to the NBA, and
- 54:07Speaker 1: I feel like for the last 17 years, without even
- 54:10Speaker 1: realizing I was doing it, I managed to underestimate him
- 54:14Speaker 1: at just about every turn while also thinking the world
- 54:17Speaker 1: of him.
- 54:17Speaker 2: And that just continues every.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Year and every day because there's no way in the
- 54:21Speaker 1: world that I thought with the type of game that
- 54:22Speaker 1: he had that he could still be like this as
- 54:24Speaker 1: it is. I have been able to come up with
- 54:26Speaker 1: a yeah but for just about every portion of his career,
- 54:30Speaker 1: and he just wipes his ass with every single one
- 54:33Speaker 1: of them and then hold it up to my face
- 54:34Speaker 1: and be like, smell it.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Smell it.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Yeah, how does it taste? It's right there.
- 54:38Speaker 1: But at the same time, outside of that championship in 2022,
- 54:43Speaker 1: what are we talking about post Kevin Durant in terms
- 54:46Speaker 1: of the Warriors and their performance? And the answer is
- 54:48Speaker 1: not really that much. But I think you raised a point.
- 54:52Speaker 1: It's kind of because they've underestimated him, one could argue.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 54:57Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. And when Joe Lacob is out here in
- 54:59Speaker 3: a championship speech and saying, hey, shouts to the organization
- 55:03Speaker 3: for putting this roster together and leaving out Stephen Curry
- 55:07Speaker 3: and his name and what he's done for the franchise.
- 55:11Speaker 3: I think you can safely say that everyone in that
- 55:15Speaker 3: organization and everyone in the NBA underestimated Steph Curry and
- 55:18Speaker 3: he is still out here in top 10 in the
- 55:22Speaker 3: scoring in the NBA at age 38 is absurd. But
- 55:26Speaker 3: I can't see him being moved. I can't see Stephen
- 55:29Speaker 3: Curry not finishing out his career with the Golden State Warriors.
- 55:33Speaker 3: So it becomes incumbent on the Warriors to put the
- 55:35Speaker 3: pieces around him to succeed. And that's why the Giannis
- 55:38Speaker 3: Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is really interesting here because Jimmy Butler was
- 55:44Speaker 3: pursued by the Phoenix Suns and his contract lines up
- 55:48Speaker 3: pretty clean with Giannis Antetokounmpo. And so you can see
- 55:52Speaker 3: a world in which the Milwaukee Bucks say, we don't
- 55:55Speaker 3: really want Jimmy Butler on this team. but we could
- 55:58Speaker 3: want all the picks that you have and some of
- 56:00Speaker 3: the young players on the Phoenix Suns. So why don't
- 56:02Speaker 3: we just all come together and say, hey, Jimmy Butler,
- 56:05Speaker 3: I know you couldn't work things out with Phoenix when
- 56:07Speaker 3: he was in Miami, but let's get a three-team trade here.
- 56:10Speaker 3: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green playing for the Warriors.
- 56:14Speaker 3: One last time for Steph Curry to make one last
- 56:16Speaker 3: championship push. And he's got Giannis on his team, which
- 56:20Speaker 3: got to give Jimmy Butler credit for how well he's
- 56:22Speaker 3: played with Golden State when he's healthy. But he ain't
- 56:25Speaker 3: Giannis Antetokounmpo, and that's why things are really interesting for me.
- 56:28Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 56:29Speaker 1: The Phoenix attempts to get Jimmy Butler a full-on clown show.
- 56:34Speaker 2: It was the dumbest. I'm fairly aware of what was
- 56:38Speaker 2: going on with that one. It was stupid.
- 56:41Speaker 1: That's the best that I'll say that I'm comfortable saying
- 56:44Speaker 1: right now is I trust that Phoenix will find a
- 56:47Speaker 1: way to mess it up. if it comes down to
- 56:49Speaker 1: doing that, by the way, somehow they are better than
- 56:51Speaker 1: we thought that they would be. I want to throw
- 56:53Speaker 1: one last thing at you before we get out of here.
- 56:56Speaker 1: How do you think this last year of LeBron? Well,
- 56:59Speaker 1: maybe it's not the last, but the LeBron Lakers 25, 26, where,
- 57:05Speaker 1: LeBron can have games, but it's obvious he's 40-something years old.
- 57:09Speaker 1: It's a world where Austin Reeves can average 30 points
- 57:11Speaker 1: a game when he doesn't have a calf injury, and
- 57:13Speaker 1: where Luka's gotten himself in super-duper shape, but it hasn't
- 57:17Speaker 1: quite been MVP-level ball as I thought that it would be.
- 57:20Speaker 2: But how do you think this goes for this team?
- 57:23Speaker 3: They got to do something here because that defense is atrocious.
- 57:25Speaker 3: They don't get back on defense, and a lot of
- 57:28Speaker 3: it is Luka Doncic. He doesn't have the energy to
- 57:31Speaker 3: be the 40-point scorer, and who does have the energy
- 57:34Speaker 3: to be 40 point score, a 10 assist, a guy,
- 57:36Speaker 3: a game guy, and also run back on defense. But
- 57:40Speaker 3: of the top 10 slowest guys in miles per hour
- 57:43Speaker 3: defensively in the NBA, there's only one team that has
- 57:47Speaker 3: multiple guys in that top 10. And the Lakers have
- 57:50Speaker 3: three of them in Austin Reeves, LeBron James, and Luka Doncic.
- 57:53Speaker 3: They don't move. They don't play defense in the way
- 57:56Speaker 3: that you have to in today's NBA to win championships.
- 57:59Speaker 3: And so they got to find a way, Bomani, to
- 58:02Speaker 3: upgrade defensively because, they're going to get wiped out in
- 58:06Speaker 3: the first round if they play the defense that they're
- 58:08Speaker 3: having here. I don't think J.J. Redick, as you saw
- 58:10Speaker 3: with the rotation last year in the playoffs, that he
- 58:12Speaker 3: went small for basically 48 minutes last year, did not
- 58:16Speaker 3: trust Jackson Hayes, did not trust the bigs to play
- 58:20Speaker 3: defensively what they needed to in the playoffs. They got
- 58:22Speaker 3: to figure out a way that they can get some
- 58:24Speaker 3: actual athletes out there and activity on the wing to
- 58:28Speaker 3: cover up for three very offensively dominant players. I suspect
- 58:33Speaker 3: you're going to hear a lot of Austin Reeves trade
- 58:35Speaker 3: talks here in the next few weeks because I don't
- 58:38Speaker 3: know if they're going to move off of LeBron. Certainly
- 58:40Speaker 3: not going to move off of Luka. But Austin Reeves,
- 58:43Speaker 3: a guy that is, I think, duplicitous. Not duplicitous. What's
- 58:47Speaker 3: the word I'm looking for?
- 58:48Speaker 2: Repetitive, I think is probably the best way to put it.
- 58:50Speaker 3: Repetitive, where he's a little bit redundant. Redundant. His skill
- 58:55Speaker 3: set of being a great ball-dominant guy who can score
- 58:58Speaker 3: and pass, you already got two of the best all-time
- 59:00Speaker 3: at it, Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the team.
- 59:02Speaker 3: And so there's a lot of diminishing returns here with
- 59:05Speaker 3: Austin Reeves, and I got to wonder if he's the
- 59:07Speaker 3: guy that gets moved at the trade deadline to try
- 59:09Speaker 3: to upgrade. upgrade defensively because this team, it can't have
- 59:12Speaker 3: three offensive juggernauts that don't play any defense.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Two things.
- 59:17Speaker 1: One, I make that duplicitous mistake often.
- 59:19Speaker 2: It was relatable content. Duplicative?
- 59:21Speaker 3: It's not the word I'm trying to say.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think duplicative is closer. Duplicitous means you'd be lying.
- 59:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 59:26Speaker 2: But it feels like it, right? It feels like it
- 59:29Speaker 2: lands there. Number two, they can trade Austin Reeves. I
- 59:33Speaker 2: get it if they do. I really do. But they're
- 59:36Speaker 2: going to have to explain that to the Lokes, the locals.
- 59:39Speaker 2: The locals are some of the... Hey, man, they ain't
- 59:43Speaker 2: had it like this before, baby. Just a good old red-blooded,
- 59:47Speaker 2: hairy American winning machine. You know what I'm saying? They
- 59:50Speaker 2: ain't quite had it like that, boy.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Well, I'm trying to think of where would Belmonte Jones
- 59:56Speaker 3: like to see Austin Reeves play? What team do you
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: think would be embraced the most by Austin Reeves?
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Danny Ainge is on line one. I mean, look, the Celtics,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: of course, would enjoy it. But Danny age is, is,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: is all. Let me have said Danny age. That's not,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: I'm not casting no aspersions on Danny age. Cause Danny
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: age is also the guy that told ace Bailey.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I don't know what you think, but you're coming to Utah, son.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Maybe that's the deal, right? To, to, to counterbalance some
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: of that ace. Yeah, man.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Awesome. Reeves. He he's most improved player of the year candidate.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I mean, the way that he's been able to ball
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: out over the last year or so, He's going to
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: get a lot of phone calls about him, and he's
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: on this very low contract, which makes it tough for trades,
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: and he's going to be up for an extension here
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: and a big contract, but there's going to be teams,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: and that's the thing about Utah. Walker Kessler makes a
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: lot of sense on the Lakers, but after he had
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: an injury that he's out for the rest of the year,
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: he kind of crossed it off a list like Steve Buscemi,
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: just be able to scratch the Utah Jazz off the list.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: I don't see them making that trade, but There are
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: other teams that could use Austin Reeves as the fulcrum
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: of their offense, and I don't think the Lakers are
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: that team anymore. I think they need to upgrade defensively,
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: and J.J. Redick, I don't think he's going to do
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: another year of what they did last year in the
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: postseason and just run these guys into the ground because
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: they need to play both ends of the floor, and
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: right now they're not.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Walker Kessler came into the league in 2022, and he's
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: been on the trade block ever since.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Yep, and he's a restricted free agent. It's sad, man.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: We're not out here crying for millionaire NBA players, but
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: when you are out for the season, right before you're
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: going to be a restricted free agent, we saw how
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: that played out for Cam Thomas and Jonathan Kaminga and
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Quentin Grimes this year. That's a tough situation for Walker
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Kessler and his agent.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I cry for people who got to live in Utah.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I think I don't care. I mean, shout out to
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: NBA young boy, but I just that's that's not. It's
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: not what I would do. Tom Haverstraw. Check him out
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: at Substack. Tom the Finder. Check him out at Yahoo
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Sports covering the NBA. My man, it's been a pleasure.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Appreciate you, Bomani.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: All right.
