- 1:05Speaker 4: I'm a businessman.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Blood is a big expense.
- 1:13Speaker 8: Way down among Brazilians Coffee beans grow by the billions
- 1:18Speaker 8: So they've got to find those extra cups to fill
- 1:22Speaker 8: They got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil.
- 1:28Speaker 7: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. And
- 1:30Speaker 7: I'm Fred.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I'm Greg.
- 1:32Speaker 7: And it is time for another episode of The Caffeinated
- 1:34Speaker 7: Movie Geek.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Cappuccino on my butt. I still drink coffee.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 1:43Speaker 4: It's time for The Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 1:46Speaker 7: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:48Speaker 7: Nancy's Bagel Grounds, where we get together, drink coffee, talk movies,
- 1:52Speaker 7: and discover how to make it in the film industry.
- 1:56Speaker 9: Or not.
- 1:58Speaker 7: So, Greg, I ask you, what blend of coffee are
- 2:01Speaker 7: we drinking this week?
- 2:03Speaker 4: What is Pacific Blacktail?
- 2:06Speaker 7: Are we going to go to Alex to see if
- 2:07Speaker 7: you're right now?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Pacific Blacktail.
- 2:11Speaker 7: I believe you're right, yes. There's 200 points on your board,
- 2:15Speaker 7: so good to go. We just had a few announcements
- 2:19Speaker 7: before we get on with the show and bring in
- 2:21Speaker 7: our special guest, but... I did want to, in a
- 2:24Speaker 7: sort of continuation from last week's episode, I want to
- 2:28Speaker 7: send out another special thank you to a donator, a supporter,
- 2:33Speaker 7: someone backing us finally. Here's the part that's really, to me,
- 2:38Speaker 7: kind of shocking and amazing and impressive. I want to
- 2:41Speaker 7: say thank you to Jeff Beyer. He's the guy I
- 2:44Speaker 7: said thank you to last time. He has again donated
- 2:48Speaker 7: to the cause.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Wow.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 7: When I can't get anybody else to do it once,
- 2:55Speaker 7: Jeff has come around and donated twice in the last
- 2:57Speaker 7: couple of weeks. And a nice donation, so much so
- 3:01Speaker 7: that Jeff has about bought the mixer himself. So I
- 3:05Speaker 7: think I'm just going to nickname the mixer Jeff. Nice.
- 3:08Speaker 7: And I think we need to get a little nameplate
- 3:10Speaker 7: for it and get one of those fancy, like the
- 3:13Speaker 7: silver lettering on the Cadillacs and whatnot. We need to
- 3:15Speaker 7: get one of those that just says Jeff on it. So, yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 7: thank you to Jeff because he's definitely come through. There
- 3:22Speaker 7: you go. He's come through for us and helped us
- 3:25Speaker 7: cover the expenses here. We're still not to our goal, but, again,
- 3:30Speaker 7: it's good to know that Jeff has put us more
- 3:33Speaker 7: than halfway there single-handedly. Wow. Yeah, thank you very much.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Now I feel like a cheapskate.
- 3:39Speaker 7: Thank you very much to Jeff for, yeah, definitely covering
- 3:43Speaker 7: a decent amount of this. And we're still not there.
- 3:46Speaker 7: So anybody else, not Jeff. that would like to help
- 3:49Speaker 7: keep this train rolling and keep this new constant need
- 3:54Speaker 7: for new equipment and replacing stuff and keeping the website
- 3:58Speaker 7: functional as bare bones as it is. Yeah, all of
- 4:02Speaker 7: that we keep going in the hole for. So please
- 4:04Speaker 7: send your funds if you would like to support us.
- 4:07Speaker 7: And Jeff is awesome.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Everybody donate a dollar.
- 4:10Speaker 7: If everybody would, it would really make a difference. But
- 4:14Speaker 7: everybody goes, except for me, and then that's everybody.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Nobody does it. I'm going to donate a dollar. Just
- 4:19Speaker 4: watch for my dollar.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Well, then we'll be able to retire.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I'm putting my money where my mouth is.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Okay.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I've donated before.
- 4:28Speaker 7: He's throwing down the gauntlet. So all of you have to,
- 4:32Speaker 7: I think he said, what, $ 100? Yeah, all of you
- 4:36Speaker 7: donate $ 100.
- 4:36Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 4:37Speaker 4: A dollar for every time you've listened to an episode.
- 4:39Speaker 7: There you go. That sounds fair to me. There's plenty of...
- 4:43Speaker 7: I mean, half the stuff on iTunes is like $ 1. 99
- 4:44Speaker 7: to download. That's right. We're not doing that at this point.
- 4:49Speaker 7: So hopefully it won't come to that. If somebody will
- 4:51Speaker 7: help support us, we won't have that.
- 4:52Speaker 4: But anyway.
- 4:54Speaker 7: I hate begging. I'm just, you know, I feel like
- 4:59Speaker 7: we try to give a lot. And if people want
- 5:03Speaker 7: to help us out, it's greatly appreciated.
- 5:05Speaker 10: Right.
- 5:06Speaker 7: Because it does... When I total up how much it
- 5:09Speaker 7: is every month, it's frightening, actually.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So.
- 5:12Speaker 7: Just to put together something as simple as what I
- 5:14Speaker 7: feel like we're trying to do, but it all adds
- 5:17Speaker 7: up really fast. Okay, on to our next order of business.
- 5:23Speaker 7: This is way more interesting than asking for money. We
- 5:27Speaker 7: are extremely proud to announce that Movie Meltdown has been
- 5:31Speaker 7: nominated for the 10th Annual Rondo Awards.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Yay! I'm proud.
- 5:38Speaker 7: I'm still amazed that we get thrown into the mix
- 5:41Speaker 7: with that. There are some Some huge shows there. And also,
- 5:44Speaker 7: once again, back to the last point, one or two
- 5:47Speaker 7: that are massively well-financed that have huge corporate money thrown
- 5:53Speaker 7: at them. And just to be thrown in the running
- 5:55Speaker 7: with them, I think, speaks highly of our show. So
- 6:00Speaker 7: I'm very appreciative that we've been thrown in with that.
- 6:03Speaker 7: And that being said, hey, go vote for us. Because
- 6:07Speaker 7: the only thing more impressive would be actually beating those guys.
- 6:10Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And the award is awesome. It is awesome. Just looking
- 6:14Speaker 4: at the award is awesome. Go look at the award
- 6:17Speaker 4: because Brian wants that in his house.
- 6:19Speaker 7: I've held one. I'm surprised they didn't chase me out
- 6:23Speaker 7: of there because I was touching it. But, yeah, I've
- 6:25Speaker 7: held one. It's the most awesome thing maybe ever. And, yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 7: it's pretty damned amazing. So go to RondoAward.com and look
- 6:35Speaker 7: for the category Best Horror Multimedia Audio or Podcast. And
- 6:40Speaker 7: that would be us. And we're listed on there as
- 6:42Speaker 7: an option. You have to copy and paste the whole email.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Don't try to, like, click on things on the screen
- 6:48Speaker 7: because that doesn't count. I had somebody last year tell me,
- 6:51Speaker 7: I think I voted. I clicked on it. They did
- 6:54Speaker 7: not send an email at all. And I'm just like,
- 6:56Speaker 7: I don't even think I want to tell you. It
- 6:58Speaker 7: was after the fact. I'm just like, thanks for your help.
- 7:01Speaker 7: I mean, you tried.
- 7:03Speaker 4: You did your damnedest.
- 7:04Speaker 7: Thank you very much. But, yeah, if you don't actually
- 7:06Speaker 7: send an email to David who runs the thing, it's
- 7:09Speaker 7: not going to get counted. So I'm sure most people
- 7:11Speaker 7: have done it, you know, in years past, but if
- 7:13Speaker 7: you haven't, yeah, you have to copy and paste the
- 7:16Speaker 7: whole ballot, put in an email, send it over to
- 7:18Speaker 7: David and it actually gets counted then. So if nothing else, yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 7: it's awesome that we're in the running, um, spread the word,
- 7:26Speaker 7: tell your friends and most importantly, go vote for movie meltdown.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And check out some of the other categories too, while
- 7:31Speaker 4: you're on there. It's got some fun stuff that I
- 7:34Speaker 4: didn't know about.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 7: I've said in years past, it's, it's, about the only
- 7:38Speaker 7: award show that i think is is really impressive at
- 7:40Speaker 7: this point especially of the you know the stuff going
- 7:43Speaker 7: on out there there's a million stupid award shows on
- 7:45Speaker 7: tv every couple of days but they're all the same
- 7:49Speaker 7: stupid mainstream crap and where this is like you know
- 7:52Speaker 7: where else can you vote for your favorite toy or
- 7:54Speaker 7: your favorite you know extra feature on a dvd set
- 7:57Speaker 7: that came out or you know favorite magazine cover i
- 8:00Speaker 7: mean it's so geek friendly that Yeah, it's pretty well
- 8:05Speaker 7: put together, and it definitely caters to our crowd. So, yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 7: just RondoAward.com. Go check it out. Vote either way because
- 8:14Speaker 7: they're awesome. So regardless of.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Who you vote for, but vote for Moving All Time.
- 8:18Speaker 11: Right.
- 8:19Speaker 4: All right.
- 8:20Speaker 7: With that, we will take our break, and we will
- 8:21Speaker 7: be back and welcome our special guest co-host.
- 8:24Speaker 5: For the week.
- 8:24Speaker 12: What's up?
- 8:25Speaker 5: You'll be back.
- 8:27Speaker 7: You the best, why they play you like.
- 8:30Speaker 4: You John Doe?
- 8:53Speaker 11: I'm on fire, but I'm cool like Defonzo.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I say you're smooth with it.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Put some slick with it.
- 9:00Speaker 9: Golden, pure, creamery butter. Rich, flavorful, satisfying. That's what it
- 9:03Speaker 9: takes for the finest buttered popcorn, and that's what we use.
- 9:07Speaker 9: See for yourself why there's no showtime treat to equal
- 9:10Speaker 9: the crisp, delicious flavor of hot popcorn that's bathed in
- 9:13Speaker 9: real melted butter. It's at the concession stand now.
- 9:17Speaker 13: Prepare yourself for the most gruesome and grotesque horror film
- 9:20Speaker 13: experience of them all. The Blood-O-Rama Shock Festival. Vampires, ghouls,
- 9:27Speaker 13: half-human monsters, and creatures from the world of the undead
- 9:30Speaker 13: all join together in one fright-filled, fantastic cavalcade of the
- 9:34Speaker 13: weird and bizarre.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Don't be afraid.
- 9:38Speaker 13: See the Blood-O-Rama Shock Festival if you dare.
- 9:43Speaker 14: If you're enjoying this podcast, perhaps you'd be interested in GleeCast.

- 9:52Speaker 1: or at least most booze-filled podcast about Glee.
- 9:54Speaker 15: You want to be me.
- 9:56Speaker 7: Who doesn't, Sue?
- 9:57Speaker 14: But we know we can't be.
- 9:58Speaker 10: Instead, Erica and Emily.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Uh, Emily.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And erica who am i i just don't know i'd.

- 10:15Speaker 4: I'm going to ask you to smell your armpits to
- 10:17Speaker 4: the right or the left that's the smell of failure.
- 10:21Speaker 14: Failure smells like dove mine has a pleasant lady speed

- 10:43Speaker 2: Well i love the movies.
- 10:45Speaker 12: Welcome to the biggest movie event of the year.
- 10:49Speaker 2: We're going to have a great night, ladies and gentlemen.

- 10:56Speaker 2: Ladies and.

- 11:29Speaker 3: The 2012 Oscar party.
- 11:31Speaker 7: From his basement.

- 11:39Speaker 7: Hey guys, I like bologna.
- 11:42Speaker 4: So I took some bologna and I wrapped it around
- 11:45Speaker 4: a hot dog. Rupert Popkin.
- 11:51Speaker 11: Mom!
- 11:51Speaker 7: I'm having a show down here.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Keep it down.

- 13:06Speaker 5: Listen if you dare.
- 13:12Speaker 9: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 13:14Speaker 13: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 13:15Speaker 4: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 13:18Speaker 9: And now, on with the show.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Love like winter.
- 13:29Speaker 18: Oh, oh.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Love like winter.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Winter. It's in the mud.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's in the mud.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I've had my love before I was born.
- 13:36Speaker 2: He wanted love. You and Fred, actually.
- 14:11Speaker 16: This is reminding me of voiceovers when you and Sean,
- 14:14Speaker 16: and we were doing like the witches.
- 14:15Speaker 7: We did the.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Voiceovers for the movie. We had to pretend like we
- 14:24Speaker 1: were various monsters.
- 14:25Speaker 6: All those creature effects you hear in the film are
- 14:28Speaker 6: actually us just making sounds.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Pretty much just like this.
- 14:34Speaker 7: Very cool.
- 14:36Speaker 3: That's good.
- 14:40Speaker 7: We don't... exclusively cover horror but I swear it's a
- 14:43Speaker 7: good 75% of what we talk about no we just
- 14:47Speaker 7: come back to it time and time again I.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Never considered myself a horror fan and then the more
- 14:51Speaker 4: I got with the show I realized I guess I
- 14:55Speaker 4: am this is all.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I want yeah well.
- 14:58Speaker 4: You know and then I start thinking back to the
- 15:01Speaker 4: things that my dad and I would go to the
- 15:03Speaker 4: video store and rent and yeah right yeah I guess
- 15:06Speaker 4: I am so.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well what's your favorite horror movie then I put you
- 15:12Speaker 2: on the spot, I'm sorry.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I mean, you think there's so many different.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I still.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Say my favorite horror movie, but I'm a sci-fi geek
- 15:22Speaker 4: as well.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I say Alien's my favorite horror movie.
- 15:26Speaker 10: Oh, man.
- 15:27Speaker 2: You're in good company here, then. I think that's one.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Of the best movies for me, period. That's almost more
- 15:35Speaker 4: like an action film. It's like an action horror.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Action horror sci-fi.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But it works as the trapped in the house with
- 15:42Speaker 4: the psychopath or ghost or any of those, it works.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Lance actually came on this show not too long ago, right?
- 15:50Speaker 7: Yeah, when he came to Lexington and did Scarefest, we
- 15:53Speaker 7: talked to him and talked about his book and stuff. Oh, cool.
- 15:56Speaker 2: How long ago was that?
- 15:58Speaker 7: Less than six months. Oh, wow, recently. End of the summer, maybe?
- 16:02Speaker 7: Or maybe not even that long. It was the end
- 16:03Speaker 7: of last year. Yeah, like October or something. beginning of September, October,
- 16:08Speaker 7: something like that.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Very cool.
- 16:11Speaker 4: There are certain movies that always come up. Alien, The Thing,
- 16:17Speaker 4: that always... The Thing is kind of my go-to. You're right,
- 16:19Speaker 4: you're right. It's probably his. And I was going to
- 16:21Speaker 4: say that, but I didn't want to steal his thunder.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Have you seen the new, the remake of The Thing?
- 16:24Speaker 2: I just watched it recently. I.
- 16:27Speaker 7: I was kind of surprised how much I didn't hate.
- 16:31Speaker 4: It.
- 16:32Speaker 7: I wasn't expecting the deck stacked against it.
- 16:35Speaker 6: That's the best way to go into movies. If you
- 16:37Speaker 6: expect the worst, then you're never disappointed.
- 16:40Speaker 11: Sometimes you still are.
- 16:41Speaker 17: We just went to Universal Studios and they had things.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Like you know there is the yeah war knights that
- 16:56Speaker 1: was actually really.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Cool that was probably the best exhibit.
- 16:58Speaker 19: Full-on creature suits and yeah it was pretty impressive suits
- 17:03Speaker 19: yeah for the thing yeah it was it was cool
- 17:09Speaker 19: we like We like the creature outfits.
- 17:11Speaker 1: That's where it's at.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Practical creature effects. You can't beat practical creature effects.
- 17:17Speaker 4: That's like our Bible.
- 17:19Speaker 7: Every week, we continue bitching about CG effects.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You can't really trick the human brain. You just know.
- 17:27Speaker 6: You always know that it's CG whenever you see it.
- 17:30Speaker 6: It's always lost. It's called Uncanny Valley. The closer you get,
- 17:35Speaker 6: the wronger it gets. Which is why motion capture has
- 17:38Speaker 6: failed so humongously on Mars Needs Moms and these other films.
- 17:43Speaker 1: He thinks Zemeckis is Zemeckis.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Zemeckis, yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 13: Zemeckis.
- 17:46Speaker 1: His are creepy.
- 17:47Speaker 7: He used to be such a good filmmaker.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Why?
- 17:49Speaker 11: He's got 3D cartoons.
- 17:50Speaker 4: He really wanted it to work.
- 17:52Speaker 5: He does.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Bless his heart.
- 17:54Speaker 1: He really wanted that to go right. He just didn't
- 17:57Speaker 1: do it. I can see the appeal because you have
- 17:59Speaker 1: 100% freedom. You can do any shot you can possibly imagine.
- 18:03Speaker 4: From the director's standpoint, definitely.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But I think that that in a way is worse
- 18:07Speaker 1: because you need to be limited in your imagination.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Grounded a little.
- 18:12Speaker 11: Your imagination thrives on that. having to work around limitations
- 18:16Speaker 11: there's something about that that's true.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Mother of all invention yeah like the.
- 18:20Speaker 11: Real world there are limitations yeah yeah if there are
- 18:23Speaker 11: no limitations then you're just.
- 18:25Speaker 7: Shopping yeah you're shopping that's not how you that's not
- 18:30Speaker 7: creative that's.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Not creative yeah although i gotta say i really enjoyed
- 18:35Speaker 6: avatar and that one was pure brain candy.
- 18:39Speaker 2: There wasn't anything real about that one.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I was in the right frame of mind when I
- 18:42Speaker 4: went and saw it. It was one of those things
- 18:44Speaker 4: where I'm going to give all of whatever my money
- 18:46Speaker 4: I'm giving to this, and I'm just going to go
- 18:48Speaker 4: for the ride. It was fun.
- 18:50Speaker 11: But you remember all that hype, like movies are changed forever.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I was pretty disappointed the first time I saw it,
- 18:59Speaker 1: but as I watched it a couple more times, I
- 19:02Speaker 1: really started to enjoy it a lot more, especially the
- 19:04Speaker 1: last time I saw it. I was like, wow, this
- 19:06Speaker 1: is actually a Good movie, because when you hit some
- 19:08Speaker 1: of those beats and you do it in an original way,
- 19:11Speaker 1: it tends to stick with you.
- 19:14Speaker 2: It's kind of like a fungus. It grows on you
- 19:16Speaker 2: after a while.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I'll have to go back. I stayed away, so I'll
- 19:20Speaker 4: have to go back.
- 19:23Speaker 6: I mean, you're obviously not going to that film for
- 19:25Speaker 6: Sam Worthington's tremendous acting, but there's still a lot of
- 19:30Speaker 6: entertainment value there.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Do you have a coffee for everyone? Yes, I desperately
- 19:34Speaker 4: need coffee.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys have heard of this,
- 19:36Speaker 1: but in L.A. they're getting ready to do a 5K
- 19:39Speaker 1: race where you're running away from zombies for the entire time.
- 19:43Speaker 10: It's around the country.
- 19:45Speaker 2: It's not in LA.
- 19:47Speaker 10: San Diego? There's one in Atlanta. There's like five different
- 19:51Speaker 10: locations that do it.
- 19:53Speaker 1: That's got to be pretty cool.
- 19:54Speaker 4: I was going to give you that for your birthday.
- 19:58Speaker 7: You ruined it.
- 19:59Speaker 11: Wow.
- 20:04Speaker 1: How dare you learn something that doesn't exist?
- 20:08Speaker 2: You won't make that mistake again.
- 20:10Speaker 7: Did you hear what they're doing at the Comic-Con, the
- 20:13Speaker 7: San Diego one this year? They've teamed up, like, I
- 20:15Speaker 7: think Nerdist is doing it with LucasArts, and it's like,
- 20:19Speaker 7: Course of the Force or something, and they're doing basically
- 20:22Speaker 7: like the Olympic Torch Run, only with a lightsaber, all
- 20:25Speaker 7: the way down the coast of California to San Diego. Yeah, it's,
- 20:29Speaker 7: It's kind of ridiculous.
- 20:30Speaker 4: That's going to be the.
- 20:30Speaker 1: High wire mark achievement. I think so.
- 20:34Speaker 7: But it's supposedly for charity, so I guess they're doing
- 20:37Speaker 7: it for you.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Those are things that make me not like Star Wars.
- 20:41Speaker 2: What about this? re-releasing of Star Wars again in 3D now.
- 20:44Speaker 2: What about that?
- 20:46Speaker 7: I'm so tired of that, guys.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I took my kids to see it because they're five
- 20:50Speaker 4: and eight and they are infatuated with everything Star Wars.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I didn't realize the 3D ones were out.
- 20:57Speaker 7: Yeah. Unfortunately, the Phantom Menace.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Unfortunately.
- 21:02Speaker 4: And, you know, it was a complete waste of time. Naturally. I.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I can't really watch 3D too well anyway. I feel
- 21:11Speaker 4: like I don't see everything.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm kind of over the whole 3D. I mean,
- 21:16Speaker 2: it's exciting for like the first 30 seconds, maybe 40.
- 21:19Speaker 1: You just kind of see it like it's 2D.
- 21:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 7: I went and saw Hugo, and that was my, I
- 21:23Speaker 7: was like, this is great. He worked it. Again, you're
- 21:25Speaker 7: working with a master at this point, so I wanted
- 21:27Speaker 7: to see what he did, but halfway in, I was
- 21:29Speaker 7: kind of like, I want to watch this on 2D
- 21:32Speaker 7: DVD later. Cause yeah, I feel like you, you kind
- 21:34Speaker 7: of get a better appreciation of that. Cause you're so
- 21:37Speaker 7: busy looking at the depth of it. And I'm, I
- 21:39Speaker 7: don't know. I midway in, I was kind of like, yeah,
- 21:41Speaker 7: I think I'd be okay with 2D.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:43Speaker 7: And he did a great job with it, but it's
- 21:45Speaker 7: just the novelty is worn off. I think.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Do you think Hugo's worth the great number of Oscars
- 21:50Speaker 6: that it's been nominated for?
- 21:52Speaker 13: I guess.
- 21:53Speaker 7: I mean, it's, you know, Oscars is political. So when,
- 21:57Speaker 7: when it's, When it's Scorsese and it's a love letter
- 22:00Speaker 7: to the movies, I mean, it's the same reason of
- 22:03Speaker 7: the artist. I mean, they're both just, man, we love movies. So,
- 22:07Speaker 7: you know, they're going to have to throw him in
- 22:08Speaker 7: there for at least a lot of nominations. I don't know, but.
- 22:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I'm just waiting for Star Wars in 11D. I think
- 22:15Speaker 1: you have to go with 4D. Yeah, 4D.
- 22:19Speaker 7: I'll go back out.
- 22:21Speaker 11: 4D, 4D.
- 22:22Speaker 7: 4D sound. You've got to have the THX going.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I wanted them to, you know, when they re-released all
- 22:28Speaker 4: of the original three in mid-90s, they at least had some,
- 22:33Speaker 4: you know, depth of field stuff. background things that you
- 22:38Speaker 4: didn't see in the first.
- 22:39Speaker 7: One they just kind of cleaned it up that first
- 22:40Speaker 7: time and fixed the sound and made everything you know
- 22:43Speaker 7: up to date technically but they didn't mess with.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It right they didn't change the story and then i
- 22:48Speaker 4: thought well okay since you're going all out let's you
- 22:52Speaker 4: know throw more explosions something do but it was just
- 22:55Speaker 4: the same movie just with that Viewmaster, you've got like
- 23:02Speaker 4: four layers. There's this layer, this layer. It's not really 3D.
- 23:05Speaker 1: It's just kind of a layered 2D. Unless you design
- 23:08Speaker 1: it from the beginning with 3D and you put as
- 23:11Speaker 1: much time and effort as James Cameron did, it's not
- 23:14Speaker 1: going to be that impressive.
- 23:15Speaker 11: Then you've seen most of it with a Viewmaster.
- 23:20Speaker 4: They should have just put lightsabers in the hands of
- 23:23Speaker 4: the aliens in Avatar. That would have been perfect.
- 23:29Speaker 11: When something like that happens, though, it's like, for a minute,
- 23:32Speaker 11: it's super cool, but you immediately, like, okay.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Where's the 4D? Where's the next?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing.
- 23:41Speaker 6: They think 3D is the next revolution, but it's not
- 23:44Speaker 6: really that revolutionary. It's not really enhancing the experience of
- 23:47Speaker 6: watching a movie. That's kind of where I foresee it failing.
- 23:51Speaker 6: I don't think 3D is actually going to be the
- 23:53Speaker 6: next big thing. They're trying to sell it and they're
- 23:55Speaker 6: trying to push it.
- 23:56Speaker 11: I really think in a theater, they do more with sound.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Sound sneaks up on you.
- 24:03Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 4: It can really affect.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Francis Ford Coppola is doing this interesting thing where he's
- 24:09Speaker 1: showing his film and sound mixing while he's showing it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's a mixture between theater, essentially, and film.
- 24:17Speaker 7: I thought he even had different cuts of the scenes.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 24:22Speaker 7: It really was like a performance art piece because he
- 24:25Speaker 7: had different versions, like different takes from different actors. And
- 24:28Speaker 7: some of them read differently. So he was almost reading
- 24:31Speaker 7: the audience as it's going on and picking which version.
- 24:34Speaker 2: To go with.
- 24:34Speaker 11: That's very interesting.
- 24:35Speaker 4: That's crazy. So it's like a theatrical, you get the
- 24:40Speaker 4: feel of the room.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I don't know if you film a play.
- 24:44Speaker 1: You lose everything.
- 24:45Speaker 11: You can't feel that feeling that happens in the room.
- 24:49Speaker 7: It's alive.
- 24:50Speaker 2: And so you watch it later and you're like, ooh, God.
- 24:53Speaker 4: That's nothing.
- 24:54Speaker 7: Always bad.
- 24:54Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, there's no better way to undermine an
- 24:58Speaker 11: actor than to show them a video of a live performance.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Right.
- 25:02Speaker 4: It's so wrong.
- 25:04Speaker 11: It drains all the blood out of it.
- 25:06Speaker 1: That's why theater will never die as an art form
- 25:09Speaker 1: because you're always just going to have people that are
- 25:11Speaker 1: going to come up to other people and put on
- 25:13Speaker 1: a show.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Yeah. I think you're really spot on with the sound
- 25:17Speaker 6: being a greater revolution than the visual. And we were
- 25:19Speaker 6: actually talking about this earlier today where it's– if you
- 25:22Speaker 6: think about it, an audience is– Scooter said this earlier.
- 25:24Speaker 6: But an audience is a lot more willing to forgive
- 25:27Speaker 6: poor visual quality than they are poor sound quality. If
- 25:29Speaker 6: you think about it, you can go and see a
- 25:31Speaker 6: movie and it can be kind of a fuzzy picture
- 25:33Speaker 6: or a scratchy picture and that's acceptable. But if the
- 25:37Speaker 6: sound is out of whack, you can't enjoy the movie.
- 25:40Speaker 6: It's done at that point.
- 25:41Speaker 11: Yeah, that's true.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I think you're right with that.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Except maybe when everything's out of focus. That was the
- 25:49Speaker 1: only thing in film school. They were like, you can't
- 25:53Speaker 1: claim that's art.
- 25:54Speaker 7: Then you just blow the horn, right? We're at the
- 25:56Speaker 7: drive-in now.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I was going for a dreamy effect.
- 26:02Speaker 2: It's mystical.
- 26:06Speaker 7: Well, I say this is the show. We're just leaving
- 26:09Speaker 7: all that in. All the geekiness there. Again, that's sort
- 26:12Speaker 7: of what we focus on.
- 26:13Speaker 4: That's pretty much how it goes.
- 26:14Speaker 7: Levels of geekdom there.
- 26:16Speaker 2: We've got plenty of geek for you then.
- 26:18Speaker 7: There we go. That's what we're looking for.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Have we not been doing the show?
- 26:22Speaker 4: Oh, this is the show.
- 26:23Speaker 11: Actually, a lot of times this early stuff will turn out.
- 26:26Speaker 7: It's when the best stuff comes out, really.
- 26:28Speaker 4: It'll all be used. No lie.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Close the microphone.
- 26:33Speaker 4: You are in town for the farm machinery show.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Right exactly yeah just for that.
- 26:38Speaker 12: Right that's funny I want to go to that can't
- 26:41Speaker 12: wait to see the new combine oh man it's.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Impressive You have to either wear green and yellow for
- 26:47Speaker 4: John Deere or red for International.
- 26:50Speaker 10: That'd be a convention where I would not see myself,
- 26:53Speaker 10: I would think.
- 26:54Speaker 1: That would be the only.
- 26:55Speaker 7: The one. I want to just start going at crashing conventions.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Just like World of Warcraft characters.
- 27:03Speaker 4: You force them to kick you out. Like in Fight Club.
- 27:07Speaker 11: My favorite part of that movie is just.
- 27:10Speaker 7: Crashing support groups. I'm still messing with the colors thing.
- 27:15Speaker 7: Is this like an East Coast, West Coast thing? If
- 27:17Speaker 7: you're wearing the wrong color, you get taken out and
- 27:20Speaker 7: run over by a tractor.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I got free tickets to Front Row one time for
- 27:24Speaker 4: the final night. I've never been. I don't care about
- 27:27Speaker 4: tractor pulls. It was like you were at an NFL
- 27:32Speaker 4: game and everybody had their gear on and they were
- 27:34Speaker 4: yelling at each other, red and green.
- 27:39Speaker 11: I think they ought to put taffy between the monster trucks.
- 27:43Speaker 6: Speaking of size, did you hear about this soccer game in,
- 27:46Speaker 6: what was it, It was Brazil, where it.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Was like 80 people got killed. Really? The two sides
- 27:51Speaker 2: started a fight afterwards.
- 27:53Speaker 7: They don't mess around in Brazil. They're hardcore.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Well, don't quote me on that. I could have gotten
- 27:58Speaker 2: the number wrong and the location wrong.
- 28:00Speaker 9: 800 dead.
- 28:00Speaker 4: That's what it is.
- 28:01Speaker 2: It's a large number in a foreign country. And a
- 28:04Speaker 2: lot of people died.
- 28:05Speaker 11: It could have been people born instead of dying.
- 28:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:08Speaker 2: A kid got a chip in one country.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Did you guys hear about that?
- 28:10Speaker 7: 800 dead in Baltimore.
- 28:11Speaker 2: You heard it here.
- 28:17Speaker 7: A city, dead people. That's all we know.
- 28:18Speaker 4: And a hacky sack convention.
- 28:21Speaker 11: And so there's going to be a run now where
- 28:24Speaker 11: people are going to try to get away from the
- 28:26Speaker 11: dead people.
- 28:27Speaker 10: The website is runforyourlives.com.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Bring it all back around. That's awesome.
- 28:32Speaker 4: There you go.
- 28:33Speaker 11: 5K.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Nice callback.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are going to beat
- 28:36Speaker 1: their own records on that one.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I wonder how fast the zombies are. That would be.
- 28:42Speaker 10: They're actors?
- 28:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Are they Danny Boyle zombies? Night of the Living Dead zombies?
- 28:48Speaker 10: Zack Snyder zombies?
- 28:49Speaker 7: It's going to be like Capture.
- 28:52Speaker 2: The Flag, though.
- 28:53Speaker 10: You have multiple flags that they can.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And you have to get them off the zombies?
- 28:57Speaker 16: No, they have to get them off you and at
- 28:58Speaker 16: a certain point, then I guess you might have to
- 29:00Speaker 16: stop running.
- 29:01Speaker 6: So these zombies are cognizant enough to at least recognize
- 29:04Speaker 6: that they have a duty.
- 29:06Speaker 10: They're actors with blood makeup on.
- 29:08Speaker 14: They're not real zombies?
- 29:11Speaker 7: What is the fun with that?
- 29:13Speaker 2: Did you not know zombies don't exist?
- 29:15Speaker 4: What the hell?
- 29:17Speaker 2: I never got the memo.
- 29:18Speaker 4: This is like Santa Claus here.
- 29:19Speaker 7: I'm like breaking the rules. I can only hope that
- 29:24Speaker 7: they collide with the Star Wars running with a lightsaber.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Some sort of lightsaber battle with zombies. Geeks will just
- 29:34Speaker 7: have heart attacks and die. There's too much there.
- 29:37Speaker 3: They can't deal with that.
- 29:38Speaker 4: I wonder if they could have ways for, like if
- 29:40Speaker 4: your friend is running and turns, then all of a
- 29:44Speaker 4: sudden in your pack, your friend starts ribbing people.
- 29:46Speaker 1: That would be pretty cool.
- 29:49Speaker 7: Everybody has to have someone turn.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Yeah, what happens?
- 29:52Speaker 11: Ninja flashback.
- 29:55Speaker 7: Ninja flashback.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Since we're well into it, we should probably do the introduction.
- 29:59Speaker 4: We're back, and we.
- 30:00Speaker 6: Want to welcome you, this week's special guest co-host.
- 30:05Speaker 3: We have three.
- 30:05Speaker 1: We have Rose Cirna, Scooter Downey, and Sean Elliott.
- 30:23Speaker 7: So I'll let you guys sort of do the rundown.
- 30:26Speaker 7: I know however you want to bill yourself. I know
- 30:29Speaker 7: we've got writers and writer-directors and writer-actors. So however you
- 30:34Speaker 7: want to explain, you're up. how you got here in this, uh,
- 30:36Speaker 7: in this place in your life.
- 30:38Speaker 1: This crazy place that we call earth. Uh, yeah, well,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you know, I always call Sean, my heterosexual life partner,
- 30:43Speaker 1: you know, that's my best way to describe it. You know,
- 30:47Speaker 1: we've been friends since we've been five and, uh, we're,
- 30:49Speaker 1: you know, a filmmaking team. I directed this one, we
- 30:52Speaker 1: wrote it together, produced it. He was the co-star and, uh,
- 30:55Speaker 1: Lance Hendrickson, uh, is the star of the film. And, uh,
- 30:58Speaker 1: Rose Cerna is, uh, supporting actress and you know the
- 31:03Speaker 1: film is a psychological horror movie about father and son
- 31:06Speaker 1: they're estranged and there's something mysterious in their past that's
- 31:12Speaker 1: happened that we're trying to understand as the movie progresses
- 31:15Speaker 1: and so the father takes the son out to the
- 31:17Speaker 1: woods to kind of bury the hatchet try to reconcile
- 31:20Speaker 1: their relationship and things don't go well and there's a
- 31:23Speaker 1: monster or something out there and they're being hunted and
- 31:27Speaker 1: they're starting to go crazy and it gets into Real territory.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Real territory. In short, it's amazing. Yeah, that's the pitch.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And we're showing it at the Clifton Center in Louisville,
- 31:41Speaker 1: I guess. I don't know when this is.
- 31:42Speaker 7: Saturday the 18th at 8.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah, in the past.
- 31:45Speaker 7: Last week, it was amazing.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it sold for like $ 5 million.
- 31:51Speaker 7: The push now is to watch it in your city
- 31:54Speaker 7: as we're touring around the country. That's your pitch.
- 31:56Speaker 2: That's true.
- 31:57Speaker 6: Yeah, we're making the festival rounds now, so it's more
- 32:00Speaker 6: likely than not going to be somewhere close to you
- 32:03Speaker 6: out there.
- 32:04Speaker 7: Yeah, we've got people in all different cities. So it's, yeah,
- 32:07Speaker 7: I'd say just look at whatever film festival in your
- 32:10Speaker 7: area or there's a million horror conventions. Are you guys
- 32:13Speaker 7: hitting those too?
- 32:14Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to try to. You know, we haven't
- 32:16Speaker 1: really looked into those yet because we've been trying to
- 32:17Speaker 1: deal with film festivals. But Lance is probably going to
- 32:20Speaker 1: go to a bunch of horror conventions this year.
- 32:24Speaker 7: Work it in, yeah.
- 32:24Speaker 1: That's how he does his magic. It's a good tie-in. Yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 1: we'll try to maybe see if we can show the
- 32:29Speaker 1: film there.
- 32:30Speaker 5: Definitely.
- 32:30Speaker 7: Which, by the way, it's... It's in the blood?
- 32:35Speaker 1: It's in the blood.
- 32:36Speaker 9: Yes, it is.
- 32:37Speaker 7: I'm like, wait, did he say the name?
- 32:39Speaker 1: I'll be trying to figure out, what's that Lance movie?
- 32:42Speaker 1: It's that Lance movie that he's in.
- 32:44Speaker 7: He's only done one or two. Or 200.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Over 200 movies.
- 32:49Speaker 4: He's been in, I've said this to Brian, he's been
- 32:51Speaker 4: in more movies than I've seen.
- 32:52Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Probably so.
- 32:54Speaker 4: It's very true.
- 32:55Speaker 1: When we were going to cast him, I was like,
- 32:57Speaker 1: maybe I should go and try to go through his filmography.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And then I quickly learned that he was in more
- 33:02Speaker 1: films than I could probably watch in an entire year.
- 33:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I realized that when we talked to him. I
- 33:07Speaker 7: was like, oh, let's see. What do I want to
- 33:08Speaker 7: talk to him about?
- 33:09Speaker 11: Oh, my God.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Never mind.
- 33:12Speaker 7: How about Aliens? Has anybody seen that one? Yeah, it
- 33:17Speaker 7: was too much to deal with.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you can pretty much just watch that one over
- 33:20Speaker 1: and over again.
- 33:20Speaker 7: We probably won't talk about Sasquatch. Yeah.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I haven't seen that one.
- 33:25Speaker 7: Oh, and we watched that one a year or so
- 33:27Speaker 7: ago on the show and it's, it's, it's got its issues.
- 33:31Speaker 7: But even in the discussion, we were like, Lance brings
- 33:34Speaker 7: his A game. I mean, like no matter what the
- 33:36Speaker 7: movie is, he's always good.
- 33:39Speaker 1: He says there's a low budget films, but not low
- 33:42Speaker 1: budget acting.
- 33:42Speaker 4: That's yeah.
- 33:43Speaker 7: That's, that's how he operates. It's definitely, you can tell
- 33:46Speaker 7: when you're dealing with, you know, a high class actor and,
- 33:50Speaker 7: he's always done nothing but deliver good.
- 33:51Speaker 6: Performance he takes it really really seriously he's a he's
- 33:54Speaker 6: a he's a good guy he really it doesn't matter
- 33:57Speaker 6: what the project is he gives a hundred percent all
- 34:00Speaker 6: the time and he doesn't complain i mean he was
- 34:02Speaker 6: not a prima donna during this shoot he we had
- 34:04Speaker 6: him doing heinous stuff and we we just beat the
- 34:07Speaker 6: absolute crap out of him we were dragging him through
- 34:09Speaker 6: the mud kicking him in the head he did a.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Lot of really bad stuff to him and He just
- 34:14Speaker 2: took it in stride.
- 34:15Speaker 7: He's a, he's a camera. Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 1: There's a scene that was actually deleted from the film
- 34:23Speaker 1: where Sean's character, you know, is put Lance on his
- 34:27Speaker 1: little sled that he's trying to get him out of
- 34:29Speaker 1: the woods in. And, he was having to take him
- 34:32Speaker 1: up this hill.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah, let me add a little bit more to the story.
- 34:35Speaker 6: Scooter's having me drag Lance on the sled that, first
- 34:38Speaker 6: of all, it was built upside down, so, like, there's
- 34:40Speaker 6: these prongs digging into the ground, so I can't move
- 34:43Speaker 6: at all. And then Scooter sees this, like, I don't know,
- 34:47Speaker 6: 45-degree hill, and he's like, hey, Sean, why don't you
- 34:48Speaker 6: just pull Lance up that hill? It's like, they position
- 34:51Speaker 6: the sled, and he gets the camera set up. It takes,
- 34:53Speaker 6: you know, 45 minutes to get everything set up, and
- 34:55Speaker 6: Lance gets on the sled, and he's like, all right, Sean, action!
- 34:58Speaker 15: Ha!
- 34:59Speaker 2: And I'm struggling with all my mind to try to
- 35:01Speaker 2: pull Lance up this hill. And I can't do it.
- 35:02Speaker 2: And they're just standing there making fun of me. I
- 35:04Speaker 2: think I'm pathetic for not being able to pull up
- 35:05Speaker 2: this hill.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, this is where I need to go
- 35:08Speaker 1: in and inspire Sean to really put all of his
- 35:09Speaker 1: heart into it. It's like, I can do this. So
- 35:11Speaker 1: I go and I pick up the sled. I'm like, okay,
- 35:13Speaker 1: I'm going to do this. And I take one step, slip,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and kick Lance in the back of the head as
- 35:17Speaker 1: hard as I possibly can.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Hard enough that I felt it.
- 35:19Speaker 7: I mean, that was a thud.
- 35:20Speaker 1: He just kind of looked at me and he was
- 35:23Speaker 1: just like, oh.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Well, he looked at you like that because he was
- 35:26Speaker 2: almost knocked out.
- 35:26Speaker 7: You see stars.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Yeah, so he's a tough cookie.
- 35:33Speaker 7: Draw all your inspiration from Snow Dogs. I mean, really
- 35:35Speaker 7: dig deep for that.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Cuba Gooding Jr., that's what you've got to
- 35:41Speaker 1: think of.
- 35:42Speaker 7: Academy Award winner, Cuba Gooding Jr.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 35:48Speaker 7: So I guess originally you were from here, at least
- 35:51Speaker 7: two of you.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Yeah, we're both from here and both Ballard alums, and yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: this is our place of birth.
- 35:59Speaker 2: This is the motherland.
- 36:00Speaker 7: We've pulled in some good stuff. I mean, just a
- 36:02Speaker 7: couple of weeks back, we had Jeff Schweixler here, who's
- 36:05Speaker 7: gone on to do a lot of really good stuff.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of Kentuckians out there.
- 36:09Speaker 7: And I'm still working on that Jennifer Lawrence thing. She's
- 36:12Speaker 7: dragging her feet.
- 36:13Speaker 2: She's busy, I think.
- 36:14Speaker 7: I don't know why she hasn't called me back, but
- 36:17Speaker 7: it's my goal.
- 36:17Speaker 4: I'm working on it.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I used to actually babysit her.
- 36:20Speaker 7: See?
- 36:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 36:22Speaker 7: I mean, she was that.
- 36:22Speaker 11: More babysitter stories.
- 36:23Speaker 7: There you go. She was here like two years ago,
- 36:27Speaker 7: and we had it planned out to do a whole
- 36:30Speaker 7: interview with her. And, yeah, she had whatever was scheduled
- 36:33Speaker 7: that day kind of pushed us out of it. The Oscars. Right. Look,
- 36:37Speaker 7: we outranked the Oscars.
- 36:39Speaker 4: She needed to go get a donut somewhere. She didn't care.
- 36:42Speaker 7: No. Once again. I don't want to think. But, yeah,
- 36:45Speaker 7: it's kind of surprising how much, you know, impressive up-and-coming
- 36:49Speaker 7: kind of people we've pulled out of our town here.
- 36:51Speaker 7: So I'm sort of proud of us lately.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we should be. We should stand up and
- 36:55Speaker 1: be proud and just proclaim our.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Kentuckians unite.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:59Speaker 7: And talk about tractor pulls and what not.
- 37:03Speaker 11: I think I read somewhere that actually Kentucky is the
- 37:07Speaker 11: state most mentioned in film titles, more than any other state.
- 37:12Speaker 10: Really?
- 37:12Speaker 11: There are more film titles with Kentucky in it. Hmm.
- 37:16Speaker 1: There's a lot of rhyming in Kentucky.
- 37:18Speaker 11: Yeah, I didn't investigate it myself.
- 37:22Speaker 7: Yeah, this sounds like a Google search we need to
- 37:25Speaker 7: work with.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys need a fact checker on that one.
- 37:30Speaker 7: That's your job, Fred.
- 37:31Speaker 6: You do.
- 37:33Speaker 11: Yeah, give me the fact checking job.
- 37:36Speaker 7: Usually you're the fact making up portion of the show.
- 37:40Speaker 7: Close enough.
- 37:40Speaker 1: We're storytellers.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a man after my own heart. It doesn't
- 37:45Speaker 2: really matter what you say as long as you say
- 37:47Speaker 2: it with conviction.
- 37:47Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 37:49Speaker 7: We've learned that.
- 37:51Speaker 1: It's kind of like writing essays in school, you know?
- 37:54Speaker 2: Oh, man. I used to love that. Just throw a
- 37:56Speaker 2: bunch of big words out on a page and you
- 37:58Speaker 2: got it.
- 37:59Speaker 11: I think that's actually, it's in the.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Blood?
- 38:02Speaker 11: Well, it's in the Manual of Style, the Strunk White
- 38:08Speaker 11: Manual of Style. It says if you don't know how
- 38:11Speaker 11: to pronounce a word, Say it loud.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Because it's not going to be any.
- 38:16Speaker 7: Better because you mumble.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Just go with it.
- 38:21Speaker 11: I'm pretty sure that's actually in there. I can check that.
- 38:25Speaker 4: You get on it.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Kind of like when you're talking to somebody that's maybe
- 38:28Speaker 1: got a little bit of a vision problem, you just
- 38:30Speaker 1: start talking really loud for some reason. I'm not deaf.
- 38:35Speaker 16: Hello.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Oh, but I do. This is really horrible.
- 38:37Speaker 2: I take on people's accents.
- 38:38Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 38:38Speaker 4: That just kind of happens.
- 38:39Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 20: I knew a guy that had a stutter and it
- 38:57Speaker 20: would make, he would make people do it around him.
- 39:00Speaker 7: And the thing is you'd feel like he would, yeah,
- 39:02Speaker 7: other people would start to do it the more they
- 39:03Speaker 7: were around him. And you'd think, like, oh, I'm going
- 39:05Speaker 7: to offend him. He thought it was hilarious because everybody
- 39:09Speaker 7: started talking like him. He's like, I've leveled the playing field. Finally,
- 39:13Speaker 7: you all have to talk like I do all day long.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I went to a baseball camp in Alabama one time.
- 39:17Speaker 1: And literally within two or three hours, I was talking
- 39:20Speaker 1: like a true Alabamian. You just want to fit in.
- 39:23Speaker 2: You just want to be like everybody else.
- 39:25Speaker 1: I just want to be like everyone else.
- 39:27Speaker 11: My dad was from the mountains in North Carolina. and
- 39:30Speaker 11: his accent would change on the drive there.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Pairing himself.
- 39:35Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 39:36Speaker 4: He would, you know, because he was.
- 39:39Speaker 11: He was a professor, and he had a kind of
- 39:42Speaker 11: elevated diction, but then he'd be driving back to the mountains,
- 39:45Speaker 11: and you'd just start to hear that twang. And they
- 39:49Speaker 11: asked him once to narrate a film, and he said,
- 39:53Speaker 11: I don't know if you want me. I've got a
- 39:55Speaker 11: bit of a twang in my voice. And they said, yeah,
- 39:58Speaker 11: we know that's why we're asking.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you've got to... Accents are interesting, you know.
- 40:06Speaker 1: You don't want the entire world to have a standardized accent,
- 40:10Speaker 1: you know. Yeah. It's kind of boring.
- 40:12Speaker 2: It's the spice of life.
- 40:13Speaker 11: We were kind of talking about that. There's almost a
- 40:16Speaker 11: new transatlantic diction.
- 40:18Speaker 7: That's what I brought up with Jess was, like, if,
- 40:21Speaker 7: you know, now that we've moved into this digital age
- 40:23Speaker 7: where you're talking to people on Skype from across the
- 40:26Speaker 7: country or around the world and you're watching media that's
- 40:29Speaker 7: from New York and L.A. constantly, it's like at what
- 40:32Speaker 7: point do you start to lose that, like, Local, yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 7: I mean, your individual areas kind of sound, I don't know,
- 40:39Speaker 7: eventually that might start to take its toll.
- 40:42Speaker 11: That is a powerful force because, you know, if you
- 40:45Speaker 11: start to imitate people and everybody starts to imitate, then
- 40:48Speaker 11: it all sort of becomes the same. But on the
- 40:51Speaker 11: other hand, there's another force like grass growing through the pavement,
- 40:56Speaker 11: and that's just people making up weird stuff.
- 41:00Speaker 6: Well, it's really interesting that you say weird stuff, though.
- 41:03Speaker 6: You begin to notice, like, with all the texting that
- 41:05Speaker 6: takes place, you get things like FYI and People's Ordinary
- 41:08Speaker 6: Speech or OMG.
- 41:11Speaker 2: We're actually losing our language.
- 41:12Speaker 6: Not only are we losing our accents, but we're losing
- 41:14Speaker 6: the language altogether. So it's just these little letter combinations.
- 41:19Speaker 2: It's like when.
- 41:21Speaker 11: I was in Paris just for a little while, I
- 41:23Speaker 11: told people I was starting to lose my English, and
- 41:26Speaker 11: they're like, that's really good. You've only been there for...
- 41:28Speaker 11: It's like, no, I don't speak French either. I'm just,
- 41:33Speaker 11: I'm just going blank. I can see how that would
- 41:39Speaker 11: be okay if I was speaking French, but I don't,
- 41:42Speaker 11: I don't know any French.
- 41:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I just saw this YouTube video of, uh, they did it,
- 41:46Speaker 1: I guess it was a social experiment where they, this
- 41:49Speaker 1: lady goes on a train and just starts to laugh
- 41:52Speaker 1: and Within two minutes, everybody on the train is laughing.
- 41:55Speaker 1: It just goes to show you, you know, monkey see,
- 41:57Speaker 1: monkey do.
- 41:59Speaker 11: It's funny about that because we were talking about live theater.
- 42:02Speaker 11: My wife is one of these people. She doesn't, like,
- 42:05Speaker 11: laugh with the crowd. When something's funny to her, she laughs.
- 42:10Speaker 11: And so sometimes we'll be in a performance, a live
- 42:14Speaker 11: performance of a play, and she just busts out laughing.
- 42:18Speaker 11: But then there's that laugh like a few seconds later
- 42:21Speaker 11: because then other people get it.
- 42:24Speaker 7: So it has kind of an echo. She's not as delayed?
- 42:28Speaker 4: Yeah. She should go on sitcoms and be the laugh track.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Then cue everyone to laugh.
- 42:36Speaker 11: Yeah, I think if you ever have like a critical
- 42:39Speaker 11: discussion of something you've written, it's always good to have
- 42:43Speaker 11: a partner, a confederate there in the audience to who
- 42:46Speaker 11: can start with the first question and say something like, well,
- 42:49Speaker 11: I think this is the finest piece of literature I've
- 42:52Speaker 11: read since Shakespeare. And it just sets the tone for
- 42:56Speaker 11: everybody else.
- 42:58Speaker 7: Now that he mentions it.
- 43:01Speaker 4: That will happen with movies, I think, well, especially like
- 43:05Speaker 4: film festivals, where a movie, you're in that crowd and
- 43:11Speaker 4: you're like, okay, we're going to see something that nobody's
- 43:13Speaker 4: seen yet, or very few people have seen yet, and
- 43:15Speaker 4: it's almost like a.
- 43:19Speaker 4: I don't know what it is. It's a togetherness where
- 43:22Speaker 4: you're all going to agree that this is going to
- 43:25Speaker 4: be good, and we're going to find the great parts
- 43:26Speaker 4: about it. And they usually are very good, but then
- 43:29Speaker 4: you see it, and it's like, what was special about that?
- 43:32Speaker 4: I don't remember. It's with the crowd.
- 43:35Speaker 2: The audience brings light.
- 43:36Speaker 6: The second you walk into a theater, I remember when
- 43:38Speaker 6: we were in Austin, actually, we went to see, what
- 43:40Speaker 6: was it, Clash of the Tight?
- 43:41Speaker 2: No, it was something.
- 43:43Speaker 6: Sooner or later, I went and saw some movie where
- 43:46Speaker 6: it was just a really engaged audience. It wasn't even
- 43:48Speaker 6: about the movie being good, but it was the fact
- 43:50Speaker 6: that the audience was so engaged.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Are you talking about when we saw the sing-along at
- 43:54Speaker 1: the Alamo Drafthouse of Total Recall?
- 43:58Speaker 2: I saw that.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I didn't see that one. It's great when you have
- 44:02Speaker 1: people that are really enthused to go see a movie.
- 44:05Speaker 1: It becomes its own animal.
- 44:07Speaker 7: At what point do you sing in that? Or is
- 44:11Speaker 7: it just echoing the lines?
- 44:11Speaker 1: It was like Mystery Science Theater.
- 44:13Speaker 2: We had comedians there that were doing... There's a lot
- 44:15Speaker 2: of that now.
- 44:16Speaker 4: People are doing sort of the.
- 44:25Speaker 7: Talking during the movie, making fun of it, which is
- 44:28Speaker 7: kind of what we do when we watch stuff anyway.
- 44:30Speaker 7: So it's funny that it's just transcended into a bigger
- 44:33Speaker 7: audience now.
- 44:35Speaker 11: It's really frustrating, though. I've seen some movies in the
- 44:39Speaker 11: theater and then seen them again, because I'm like 300
- 44:43Speaker 11: years old or something, like a decade later, and the
- 44:46Speaker 11: audience is just totally different. They don't laugh at the
- 44:50Speaker 11: same times.
- 44:51Speaker 4: What was it?
- 44:52Speaker 11: A friend of mine, was it Ghost World? Ghost World,
- 44:57Speaker 11: the movie with Thoroughbred. And she has this art teacher,
- 45:05Speaker 11: her summer school art teacher, who's like a performance video
- 45:10Speaker 11: nut job.
- 45:12Speaker 7: That's about right, yeah.
- 45:14Speaker 4: They show.
- 45:15Speaker 11: Well, anyway, he had a pirated version of the movie,
- 45:18Speaker 11: which was screened in Japan. And the audience just laughed
- 45:23Speaker 11: at all the different times. They took the art teacher
- 45:26Speaker 11: totally seriously. But they laughed at the student work.
- 45:31Speaker 4: The student work.
- 45:32Speaker 7: Just was hilarious to them.
- 45:35Speaker 11: And somehow, I don't know, watching the pirated copy, it
- 45:37Speaker 11: was one of those where you could see people get up.
- 45:40Speaker 11: Not a lot, but you'd be going through the movie
- 45:45Speaker 11: and all of a sudden somebody gets up and comes.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't watch the same movie again. You're a
- 45:51Speaker 1: different person when you watch it.
- 45:52Speaker 11: You're older.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I actually just was able to watch Jaws in the
- 45:57Speaker 1: theater for the first time. And that was the movie
- 45:58Speaker 1: that made me fall in love with movies. I think
- 46:00Speaker 1: I've seen it. like over a hundred times and I
- 46:04Speaker 1: saw it in LA for the first time in the
- 46:06Speaker 1: theater and everybody that was there was a huge fan
- 46:10Speaker 1: of the film and there were actually a lot of
- 46:12Speaker 1: people there who had never seen it so they were
- 46:14Speaker 1: seeing it for the first time in the theater on
- 46:17Speaker 1: the big screen and they were jumping and laughing at
- 46:19Speaker 1: all the right parts and yeah it was really.
- 46:21Speaker 7: Incredible it's amazing how well it holds up I just
- 46:24Speaker 7: rewatched it for the show a few months ago and
- 46:26Speaker 7: it's yeah it's amazing like it's barely dated other than
- 46:30Speaker 7: the clothes you know it's like It's still so tight
- 46:33Speaker 7: and well put together that it does not feel like
- 46:37Speaker 7: it's been that long since they made that movie.
- 46:39Speaker 11: Yeah, that's the movie that the word blockbuster came from.
- 46:42Speaker 7: It changed the whole industry.
- 46:44Speaker 6: Well, it also nearly wiped out the shark population of
- 46:47Speaker 6: the planet because everybody was so terrified of sharks after
- 46:50Speaker 6: it came out that they just went out and started
- 46:51Speaker 6: killing sharks left and right.
- 46:52Speaker 7: I figured more than that, it probably wiped out the
- 46:54Speaker 7: beach-going population. Every beach town probably went broke that next summer.
- 46:59Speaker 11: How did we not talk about That during the trauma episode.
- 47:03Speaker 11: That's like the most traumatic movie.
- 47:05Speaker 7: Sequel, I'm telling you. We come back to that.
- 47:07Speaker 1: It's kind of funny because my mom actually auditioned for Jaws.
- 47:12Speaker 1: I think she auditioned for Jaws 2. It's the skier
- 47:16Speaker 1: that gets eaten.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Spoiler alert!
- 47:18Speaker 1: And my mom and my dad.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Their first blind date was seeing the movie Jaws.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Wow. Your mom was so upset.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Like, you just brought back all these old memories and
- 47:32Speaker 2: she was so angry that she didn't.
- 47:34Speaker 1: No, no, my dad, uh, no, that was the first
- 47:36Speaker 1: one that they saw together. And my dad, uh, threw
- 47:38Speaker 1: his popcorn in the air when the, uh, the skeleton
- 47:41Speaker 1: pops out of the boat.
- 47:43Speaker 7: That's a, that's an effective moment.
- 47:46Speaker 1: And they, they went to the ocean the next day and, uh,
- 47:49Speaker 1: my dad wouldn't get in the water and she was like,
- 47:51Speaker 1: I don't know how she fell in love with him then,
- 47:53Speaker 1: but I.
- 47:53Speaker 6: Guess, uh, How do you think your dad would feel
- 47:56Speaker 6: about you revealing this information?
- 48:00Speaker 2: He's so proud.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I mean, he's scary sharp.
- 48:04Speaker 11: In my experience, women really fall in love with guys
- 48:07Speaker 11: because they sense they need help. That's the real thing,
- 48:12Speaker 11: or at least that explains my relationship.
- 48:14Speaker 1: You've got to balance vulnerability with kind of the tough,
- 48:17Speaker 1: you know, ruggedly handsome thing, you know.
- 48:20Speaker 8: Right.
- 48:21Speaker 7: So I guess it didn't, it, Jaws sort of implanted
- 48:24Speaker 7: itself on the DNA. Before you were even made, it
- 48:27Speaker 7: was already in the works.
- 48:28Speaker 1: It's in the blood.
- 48:29Speaker 7: It's in the blood plug.
- 48:33Speaker 21: Speaking of 4D, I watched Poltergeist with my wife in
- 48:39Speaker 21: the theater, and there's a little jack-in-the-box that jumps out
- 48:43Speaker 21: from under it.
- 48:44Speaker 11: She had one of those big theater cokes, and she
- 48:47Speaker 11: dumped it in my lap.
- 48:49Speaker 4: And not just like, you know, whoops.
- 48:52Speaker 11: It was like somehow she threw the liquid in the air,
- 48:55Speaker 11: caught it with the cup, and threw it down forcefully
- 48:58Speaker 11: into my lap.
- 48:59Speaker 7: And that's special effects.
- 49:02Speaker 6: What he's not revealing is this happened after the movie
- 49:05Speaker 6: was done showing.
- 49:07Speaker 7: She throws this cup in your lap.
- 49:09Speaker 11: Yeah, that was amazing.
- 49:11Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 49:12Speaker 10: She's a great theater goer. I'd go to watch her,
- 49:15Speaker 10: it seems.
- 49:16Speaker 11: That's kind of what I do.
- 49:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Poltergeist.
- 49:20Speaker 1: That's a great movie. Actually... That's one of the best
- 49:22Speaker 1: horror films, in my opinion. I love that one. The
- 49:24Speaker 1: movie that... I haven't been so scared in a movie
- 49:27Speaker 1: since I've been 10 years old, but Insidious. Did you
- 49:30Speaker 1: guys see that?
- 49:32Speaker 4: That's one that I've not watched.
- 49:34Speaker 1: That made me scare like a little girl. I mean,
- 49:36Speaker 1: I was just.
- 49:39Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 49:40Speaker 11: I broke that part of me that gets scared at movies.
- 49:43Speaker 1: I thought I did too, but something about that just
- 49:46Speaker 1: reached inside of me and shook me.
- 49:48Speaker 7: Wow. Well, you mentioned Jaws and some of the, I guess,
- 49:52Speaker 7: what were some of those formative, I guess, what's that
- 49:56Speaker 7: moment when you decided you wanted.
- 49:57Speaker 1: To do that? I guess subconsciously it was Jaws just because,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you know, I saw that. But the other big, and
- 50:04Speaker 1: it was also a big one for Sean, was Jurassic Park.
- 50:07Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I remember seeing when the Dilophosaurus takes its neck out.
- 50:12Speaker 1: It was terrifying, you know. But, yeah, I mean. you're
- 50:16Speaker 1: influenced by everything. I mean, especially if you're a movie
- 50:19Speaker 1: nerd like me, you know, you see everything and you're
- 50:21Speaker 1: influenced by it.
- 50:22Speaker 2: To a very large degree. I think I probably speak
- 50:24Speaker 2: for both of us here.
- 50:26Speaker 6: As we were graduating through high school, 10th, 11th and
- 50:29Speaker 6: 12th grade correlated with the release of the Lord of
- 50:31Speaker 6: the Rings movies.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And, you know, for those formative period, for that formative
- 50:35Speaker 2: period of.
- 50:36Speaker 6: Our lives, like that meant everything to us.
- 50:38Speaker 2: I mean, we were the biggest nerds.
- 50:40Speaker 6: I remember like when the third one came out, this
- 50:42Speaker 6: is our senior year. And we, we, We were those
- 50:47Speaker 6: guys who– we skipped school that day so we could
- 50:49Speaker 6: watch the first two ones before going to see the.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Third one that day. And when it finally ended, like
- 50:55Speaker 2: we were broken. We were just crushed.
- 50:57Speaker 6: But we didn't want to cry in the theater.
- 50:59Speaker 2: So we're walking out to the car.
- 51:00Speaker 4: We were with a friend of ours. We're like– We'll
- 51:02Speaker 4: see you later. No big deal.
- 51:04Speaker 6: And then we all go to our cars. The second
- 51:07Speaker 6: we each get into our car, they call a scooter.
- 51:09Speaker 7: And we were just.
- 51:10Speaker 6: Bawling on the phone. We were so broken that Lord
- 51:14Speaker 6: of the Rings was over. And I was broken for
- 51:17Speaker 6: like a week straight. It destroyed me. But I mean,
- 51:20Speaker 6: that movie, I don't know why I told that.
- 51:22Speaker 7: Story, but.
- 51:23Speaker 17: because it's fun but point being that that that movie
- 51:27Speaker 17: or that series of movies really solidified it for me
- 51:29Speaker 17: like the magic of cinema you know the power just
- 51:31Speaker 17: to take you somewhere and you know.
- 51:34Speaker 2: For for the three hours or two hours however long
- 51:36Speaker 2: the movie is.
- 51:37Speaker 4: 17 40 hours.
- 51:40Speaker 6: But you can be completely free from your ordinary experience
- 51:44Speaker 6: and lord of the rings just yeah it was that
- 51:47Speaker 6: for me so that one was a huge inspiration for
- 51:49Speaker 6: me to get into film.
- 51:50Speaker 7: Well, that makes me ask, what was it like when
- 51:53Speaker 7: you saw the Hobbit trailers coming out?
- 51:55Speaker 2: Wow, yeah.
- 51:56Speaker 7: Because I just saw the first one.
- 51:59Speaker 6: I can't say that on the radio.
- 52:01Speaker 7: We're internet. You can say whatever you want.
- 52:03Speaker 6: I was going to say, yeah, the music to that trailer,
- 52:06Speaker 6: it comes in my ear pussy so hard.
- 52:09Speaker 4: I'll sit.
- 52:09Speaker 2: I'm not even watching.
- 52:10Speaker 7: You are right at home on this show.
- 52:14Speaker 6: I'm not really even watching the trailer anymore. I'm just
- 52:17Speaker 6: playing it just to listen to the music over and
- 52:20Speaker 6: over and over again.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it grows on you. The first time I saw it,
- 52:23Speaker 1: I was like, something feels off, and then I realized
- 52:25Speaker 1: that They were trying to give that impression of growing darkness,
- 52:29Speaker 1: you know, because it's like Sauron is rising, you know,
- 52:32Speaker 1: and it creates a feeling of melancholy. And, yeah, I
- 52:36Speaker 1: think it's going to be pretty interesting.
- 52:37Speaker 6: I'm actually also kind of excited about Wrath of the Titans. Like,
- 52:40Speaker 6: The Clash of the Titans, I enjoyed it. I didn't
- 52:42Speaker 6: think it was a particularly good movie. But because it
- 52:44Speaker 6: was such a humongous sex.
- 52:47Speaker 6: Success because it was such a huge success i'm i'm
- 52:52Speaker 6: hopeful that this next one actually is going to get
- 52:54Speaker 6: a little bit more love and you know there's gonna
- 52:56Speaker 6: be more script there it.
- 52:57Speaker 7: Was one of those weird like it It made a
- 53:00Speaker 7: lot of money, but everyone collectively didn't like it. It
- 53:03Speaker 7: was successful, but yet not.
- 53:05Speaker 6: It was a lame script. Immortals came out, and I
- 53:09Speaker 6: was so disappointed with their rendition of the Titans. It
- 53:11Speaker 6: was these little desert people. I wouldn't have even been
- 53:14Speaker 6: scared of them. I'm really excited about Wrath of the
- 53:17Speaker 6: Titans because we're at least getting to see these epic gods.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Those kind of battles just always excite me.
- 53:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I... Sean really likes the, you know,
- 53:27Speaker 1: the schlocky horror films, and I've kind of actually grown
- 53:32Speaker 1: attached to them more in recent years.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Because I've made him watch so many of them.
- 53:37Speaker 1: You start to, you know... I guess you shouldn't really reveal, like,
- 53:40Speaker 1: your personal trash, I guess.
- 53:42Speaker 4: That's all we do on this show.
- 53:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I guess in film school, you know, you
- 53:47Speaker 1: watch all those artsy-fartsy films and European films, and, you know,
- 53:51Speaker 1: there is a lot to say for those kind of
- 53:54Speaker 1: films that just are documenting the human kind of experience.
- 53:59Speaker 1: I think Bergman was a big kind of influence on me,
- 54:03Speaker 1: and it actually affected this movie. There's kind of some
- 54:07Speaker 1: dark Bergman movies, you can watch one and you don't
- 54:11Speaker 1: really need to watch any more of them because they're
- 54:13Speaker 1: all essentially iterations of the same thing. People stuck in
- 54:18Speaker 1: a cabin just kind of miserable.
- 54:21Speaker 2: And then it goes downhill from there.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Exactly, yeah.
- 54:25Speaker 7: We can play both ends of it. We can all
- 54:27Speaker 7: do the what's the most trashy movie that you really
- 54:30Speaker 7: kind of love game. We got Birdman on one end,
- 54:32Speaker 7: so what's one of the trashier ones?
- 54:35Speaker 2: The trashy ones.
- 54:36Speaker 6: Well, there's the classics like what's that one where there's
- 54:39Speaker 6: little gnome creatures and there's the green slime that everybody
- 54:42Speaker 6: has to eat?
- 54:43Speaker 1: Trolls 2.
- 54:43Speaker 4: Trolls 2.
- 54:44Speaker 1: That's so bad.
- 54:46Speaker 7: Epic bad.
- 54:47Speaker 2: That's epically bad, exactly. I love that one. Man, there's
- 54:51Speaker 2: so many.
- 54:52Speaker 7: We've been accumulating like a list.
- 54:54Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot of really bad movies out there.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Actually, what was that movie we watched that was about
- 54:59Speaker 1: the orca whales at the end?
- 55:01Speaker 9: Oh, man.
- 55:03Speaker 7: It was like Jaws.
- 55:04Speaker 1: It was like this cheap Italian ripoff of Jaws.
- 55:06Speaker 7: There were about 20, especially Italian. They did like a
- 55:09Speaker 7: big knockoff of them.
- 55:10Speaker 1: I think it was an octopus or something was there.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Was there a villain?
- 55:13Speaker 7: There is an orca.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Peter Fonda is in it. It's a very strange film.
- 55:18Speaker 1: They dub everybody's voices.
- 55:20Speaker 4: Is it orca?
- 55:24Speaker 7: I don't think Peter Fonda's in it.
- 55:26Speaker 4: No, it wasn't Orca.
- 55:27Speaker 6: Orca's the one where they kill the little baby and the.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Mother's getting revenge.
- 55:30Speaker 7: That's like Jaws 4 or whatever.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 55:35Speaker 11: Well, the Bergman movie that occurs to me with schlock
- 55:38Speaker 11: horror is, you know, The Virgin Spring.
- 55:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that actually is a great movie.
- 55:42Speaker 11: Last House on the Left, it inspired that.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that's based on a myth, right?
- 55:46Speaker 7: It's an old story.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe it is. Yeah, that's brutal.
- 55:51Speaker 7: Yeah, it's pretty brutal. Well, since we're bringing it up,
- 55:54Speaker 7: and I know, Greg, this is one of your favorites,
- 55:56Speaker 7: earlier today I was trying to describe to someone the
- 56:00Speaker 7: plot of Against the Dark.
- 56:02Speaker 4: Hell yeah. In this building, we have the Against the
- 56:07Speaker 4: Dark hallway because it goes on forever.
- 56:10Speaker 7: Are you guys familiar with Against the Dark?
- 56:12Speaker 4: Against the Dark is Seek It Out. It's Steven Seagal
- 56:15Speaker 4: does a zombie movie.
- 56:17Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 56:18Speaker 7: It's supposed to be vampires, but they're so iffy on
- 56:22Speaker 7: their mythology that you're like, are they zombies now?
- 56:27Speaker 4: It's a science fiction or.
- 56:29Speaker 7: Or a supernatural thing.
- 56:31Speaker 2: We don't know.
- 56:33Speaker 4: I'm bringing this guy that another member of the show
- 56:37Speaker 4: watched separate from me, because I was a fan at
- 56:41Speaker 4: that point.
- 56:42Speaker 18: And we both saw that the guy that does all
- 56:47Speaker 18: the fighting for Seagal, because he can't fight anymore, it
- 56:51Speaker 18: looks like a cheap rock.
- 56:54Speaker 7: He's the bargain basement rock.
- 56:55Speaker 4: And it's got.
- 56:58Speaker 4: Two Trinities from The Matrix that never have a line that,
- 57:02Speaker 4: you know, spoiler alert.
- 57:03Speaker 7: They just walk around in their big coats.
- 57:05Speaker 4: But they're trapped in this... It's a hospital, I think.
- 57:09Speaker 4: It's a hospital, but it goes on for days. And they're,
- 57:12Speaker 4: you know, inexplicably say... well, I'm going to go over
- 57:16Speaker 4: here and check this room. When they clearly have to
- 57:18Speaker 4: get out of the building, I'm going to go check
- 57:20Speaker 4: this room just so they can have more fighting scenes.
- 57:24Speaker 4: It's one of the worst fast movie.
- 57:26Speaker 2: That sounds amazing. I really look forward to that one.
- 57:29Speaker 7: And it's recent. So it's Seagal at... his biggest.
- 57:32Speaker 2: And his fighting best.
- 57:33Speaker 7: He doesn't even fight.
- 57:35Speaker 4: I didn't even know they made leather that big.
- 57:38Speaker 2: That big. How many cows is that?
- 57:40Speaker 7: He stays bundled up in this coat the whole time
- 57:42Speaker 7: so you can't tell.
- 57:44Speaker 2: I guess.
- 57:44Speaker 7: But I mean, he's just so big compared to what
- 57:47Speaker 7: he used to be when he kind of pretended like
- 57:49Speaker 7: he could fight. It's such a nightmare.
- 57:52Speaker 4: There are times where he tries to kick and can't
- 57:54Speaker 4: lift his leg. And they left it in.
- 57:58Speaker 2: And they left it in.
- 58:00Speaker 4: And my favorite part is nearing the very end of
- 58:03Speaker 4: the movie, they introduce a little girl character. And she's
- 58:09Speaker 4: down the hall and, you know, please come save me.
- 58:11Speaker 4: And obviously she's one of the vampires. But they're going
- 58:14Speaker 4: to fall into the trap of trying to help her.
- 58:17Speaker 4: And you're like, please, God, make her be a vampire
- 58:21Speaker 4: so that we don't have to introduce another character because
- 58:22Speaker 4: I want this movie over.
- 58:26Speaker 2: It's that bad.
- 58:27Speaker 6: Him and Jean-Claude Van Damme with his roundhouse kicks. Any
- 58:32Speaker 6: movie that those guys touch just turns to gold.
- 58:34Speaker 7: I love them both. Van Damme had the skill to
- 58:38Speaker 7: do it. Back in the early days, he was pretty fit.
- 58:40Speaker 2: He was a.
- 58:42Speaker 7: Badass, but Seagal, he was always questionable.
- 58:45Speaker 11: My favorite description of Seagal, and it made me go
- 58:48Speaker 11: on a binge watching him, And I wish I could
- 58:51Speaker 11: credit who wrote this about him, but they said he
- 58:54Speaker 11: has this strange combination of sort of a blue-collar, working-class
- 59:01Speaker 11: guy with his Eastern mysticism. It's like he's the mysterious
- 59:06Speaker 11: presence at the backyard barbecue.
- 59:11Speaker 2: It sounds like a child molester or something. Who's that guy?
- 59:17Speaker 6: Why is he hanging out by the playground?
- 59:19Speaker 7: I like that he doesn't even pick one. He just
- 59:21Speaker 7: wants to be mystical. He's like, sometimes I'm Native American mystical.
- 59:25Speaker 4: I'm a shaman.
- 59:27Speaker 7: I'm Eastern philosophy.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Jimi Hendrix.
- 59:31Speaker 7: I have my own sports drink.
- 59:35Speaker 6: Magic is magic across the board.
- 59:37Speaker 2: And I think that's how Steven Seagal functions.
- 59:39Speaker 7: Yeah, the magic that made his career.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Jean-Claude Van Damme's more of your romantic, kind of Pepe
- 59:45Speaker 1: Le Pew martial artist type character.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Did you ever see the movie The Quest with Jean-Claude
- 59:50Speaker 2: Van Damme?
- 59:50Speaker 6: It was one of those movies where he had to
- 59:51Speaker 6: fight to regain the honor of his friends and win
- 59:54Speaker 6: the Golden Dragon.
- 59:55Speaker 7: I remember that one, but I don't remember watching it
- 59:58Speaker 7: in its entirety.
- 59:59Speaker 2: That was a really good one. He has to fight that.
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: That big chubby Mongolian guy at the end.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Oh, I love that movie.
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: That was also one of the films that made me
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: want to become a filmmaker.
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: See, this is what we need to find out. The
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: seedy underbelly of the industry that pushed you into it.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it just goes downhill from there.
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: You'll never achieve that level of excellence. No.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: One could only dream.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: You also like the Barbarians, right?
- 1:00:27Speaker 13: Oh, man.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: The Barbarian Brothers.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Thank you for reminding me. That's way better than the
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: one with the green stuff.
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: You do have that level that we appreciate.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Oh, man. I love the really, really bad ones. I
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: love movies that don't require anything from me.
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: That's what I like. You know, it's like, you get
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: off work and you just, you don't want to have
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: to think, you don't want to do anything. I just,
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: I want a movie that goes on and I don't
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: have to give it anything.
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: You're like, The Barbarians or Tree of Life?
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Which do I want? No, it's an easy pick. I
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: would pick Barbarians every time.
- 1:00:56Speaker 7: Every time.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: That's what I love about Sean. He always drags me down.
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: Yeah, unless I'm trying to impress my girlfriend, I wouldn't
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: bother watching a particularly intelligent movie.
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: Oh, luckily occasionally it works. I'm into the show, and
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: I feel like I class myself up a little bit.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: I'm like, hey, this has subtitles. I'm like a grown-up now.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I'm a big boy now.
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: It's pretty fancy then, but, you know, then next week
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: we're back to watching, you know, Creature with Klaus Kinski.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: You know, you can.
- 1:01:24Speaker 11: Turn those subtitles on anyway and feel like you're classing
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: it up.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: That's true.
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: Sometimes you need to. It just depends on how bad.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: The dialect is.
- 1:01:31Speaker 11: I'm like, I do that a lot at my house
- 1:01:33Speaker 11: just because people keep talking and stuff.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: I have to read it anyway.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: It's a good way to learn a language. You just
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: put on the subtitles.
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: Yeah, I want to watch all the Simpsons in Spanish
- 1:01:44Speaker 11: and see what happens.
- 1:01:45Speaker 7: See what happens.
- 1:01:47Speaker 11: It's either that or I'll pick it up from my
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: owner's manuals. You know, there's a lot of language in there.
- 1:01:54Speaker 16: The hardest thing you could read in another language you're reading.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Are you the one male in the world who actually
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: reads the owner's manual?
- 1:02:03Speaker 11: You know, I called Apple once because I read my
- 1:02:06Speaker 11: user agreement, and I bought this thing that was supposed
- 1:02:09Speaker 11: to be like I could use it, all the family
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: members can use it, but they put the same EULA
- 1:02:15Speaker 11: as the single user agreement, and I'm supposed to agree
- 1:02:20Speaker 11: to it, To install it.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: So you actually read it. I read it.
- 1:02:24Speaker 7: You read it.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Which is good.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: I read it.
- 1:02:25Speaker 11: Okay, not only did I read it, and it's like, okay,
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: this is the wrong EULA. You know, I'm supposed to
- 1:02:30Speaker 11: agree to only use this on one computer, and that's
- 1:02:33Speaker 11: not why I paid 20 bucks more.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: So I called Apple, and I get a kid on
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: the phone. His name was Sean. Wow.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: I remember the guy.
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:02:44Speaker 11: And he's like, yeah, that sounds weird. I don't know. Actually,
- 1:02:49Speaker 11: I can go down and check if you hold on
- 1:02:51Speaker 11: for a minute.
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: I'll go down.
- 1:02:53Speaker 11: And he goes down to the legal room, and he
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: talks to them about this. And he comes back, and
- 1:02:58Speaker 11: he says, yeah, actually, buying the family deal overrides that.
- 1:03:06Speaker 11: The EULA. So you just go ahead and install it,
- 1:03:09Speaker 11: and it's all good. It's that action permits you. But
- 1:03:13Speaker 11: they said it's really good that you're reading the agreement.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: And I'm like, wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 1:03:20Speaker 11: Why is it good that I'm reading this?
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: Because we are not familiar with it. Well, they're not
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: bothering to write it.
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: This sounds like one of those situations that could only
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: be resolved.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Through an angry letter.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: We're glad to know you. We're screwing you.
- 1:03:33Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: Thanks for bringing it up, because we really unread through
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: all that nonsense.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not.
- 1:03:38Speaker 11: Really that crazy, but the reason I was doing that
- 1:03:41Speaker 11: is I had just heard a story about software being repackaged.
- 1:03:47Speaker 11: And basically, it's the same software, but you pay.
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: More for it for the user agreement.
- 1:03:53Speaker 11: It's like, why am I paying more for it?
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: It's the Apple way.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: It's the Apple way, yeah, indeed.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Yeah, actually, speaking of languages, I just... re-watched Shutter Island
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: and I decided, you know, I'm just going to watch
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: this movie in French because I felt like, you know,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: that movie lent itself to just being in French. It
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: was a lot better in French.
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: Really?
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: Well, you probably don't need the dialogue. Yeah. I don't
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: want to, I want to sound bad, but most of
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: that movie is just visual anyway.
- 1:04:21Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: That's what I remember taking from it is how impressive
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: was this shot, how, you know, and the feeling, the
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: ambiance of, especially like in the The prison prison that they...
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: That's creepy. It's creepy. Yeah, it's creepy.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: That's the first thing they try to teach you in
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: film school is, okay, you're making a silent movie. You
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: have to really make it a visual experience. Stanley Kubrick
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: says film is an expression of mood. It should work
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: like music. So I think that's true to some extent.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: You're really just trying to enchant your audience with some
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: kind of general... atmosphere and you know that that helps
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: sets the stage for them to come in and enjoy
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: the story.
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: Yeah it's especially from him who kind of knew how
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: to do that and traumatize people based on our recent
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: discussion he's is he tied with lynch i think so
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: yeah we're discussing movies that traumatize you in every few
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: minutes we'd be like and then kubrick you know so
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: yeah so yeah he's visually amazing and traumatized.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: Well, I know he did Ghost of Mars, too, didn't he?
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: That's Carpenter. Oh, Carpenter, that's right.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that really sucked.
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: I just watched it recently. I have to say, I
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: was entertained on probably the level we... Right, yeah. It
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: was so not what I was expecting, but it was
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: kind of a fun ride.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Did you ever see a horror film called simply They?
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: It was just They, and it was about these....
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: I remember the title.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Night terrors and.
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: They hide in the shadows and they mark you when
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: you're a kid and then when you grow up they
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: come back to collect you and if you go in
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: they can only travel in the shadows or something like that.
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: I kind of remember this on VHS but I don't
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: remember watching it but I remember the title.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: That was a movie.
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: We like those.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: That's why they created the night light.
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: You need that. Oh, let's see. I had one more
- 1:06:22Speaker 7: sort of legit question. We get carried away on her
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: geeky tangent, so we can round out with plenty more
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: of those. But I was going to ask, as far as,
- 1:06:30Speaker 7: you know, anytime I sit down with a filmmaker, I
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: like to ask, because it's such a different world than
- 1:06:36Speaker 7: it was even 10, 15 years ago, what your thoughts
- 1:06:40Speaker 7: are on the whole system, as it.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: Were, now? Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:43Speaker 7: The new media, the new avenues of distribution, the new
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: ways to reach your audience. What are your thoughts on
- 1:06:50Speaker 7: all of it?
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I think that in the same way that the studio
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: system kind of collapsed at the time when Scorsese and
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Coppola and Spielberg and all those guys got a chance
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: and they were actually recruiting from film schools, I think
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: a similar thing is going to happen again. I think
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: film is becoming more accessible to everybody. People can shoot
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: films on an iPhone now, you know, and at the
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: end of the day, if you're just telling a good story, uh,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: people are going to find it, they're going to find
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: it out. Things can go viral in a second. So
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: I think it's definitely shifting into a new, exciting territory
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: for independent film.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: And not a second to assume is it's, I mean,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: it's been.
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: Such crap for the past 10 years where it's just like,
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: everything is a superhero movie or a reboot or or.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: A board game.
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: Nobody's willing to take a risk because everybody's so scared.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: He said risk and board game.
- 1:07:47Speaker 7: These are the jokes, kids.
- 1:07:49Speaker 11: Actually, I remember a story about Mario Puzo was trying
- 1:07:54Speaker 11: to write Monopoly. And I heard the story. The person
- 1:07:59Speaker 11: telling the story was a guy who pitched movies. And
- 1:08:02Speaker 11: he said it was the only time the pitch was
- 1:08:05Speaker 11: one word. It was Monopoly.
- 1:08:08Speaker 7: And I said, what about it?
- 1:08:09Speaker 11: I just think it would be cool to have a
- 1:08:11Speaker 11: movie based on Monopoly.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Sold.
- 1:08:14Speaker 11: And then they were going to get Mario Puzo to
- 1:08:17Speaker 11: write it because he was interested in gambling. And they
- 1:08:19Speaker 11: asked him, okay, they had a meeting. How are we
- 1:08:22Speaker 11: going to do this? And he's like, pay me.
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: Give me money why should I.
- 1:08:28Speaker 11: Explain it to you and they were really disappointed they
- 1:08:32Speaker 11: were kind of stunned but you know he's right because
- 1:08:35Speaker 11: why should he solve the problem and then give it
- 1:08:38Speaker 11: to him you know he's sort of proved who he
- 1:08:43Speaker 11: is you know but yeah I kept watching for that
- 1:08:48Speaker 11: movie they didn't pay him did.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: They no.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: I think the gatekeepers are going to go away. The
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: gatekeepers are going to become the marketplace. They're going to
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: become the audience. People are going to be able to
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: have the ability to choose what movies that they want
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: to see. It's not going to be spoon-fed to them
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: from on high.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the power will return to the people.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Fight the man and all that.
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: Exactly. Damn the man.
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: Well, and especially now the whole new distribution options that,
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: I mean, if you're an independent filmmaker, you can kind
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: of bypass. I mean, you can do the film fest,
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: but you don't even have to worry about theatrical. You
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: can go straight to cable, you know, and you can start, like, doing,
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: you know, direct feeds to people's houses and have your
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: premiere be at their house, basically. So it's... That's going
- 1:09:39Speaker 7: to change things, I think, quite a bit once it
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: sort of gains a little respect and people start doing it,
- 1:09:44Speaker 7: like recognizable directors start doing it, which they're already kind
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: of trying.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: I think it'll be a landslide when it does finally go.
- 1:09:50Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: It will. There's an opportunity right now because I think Especially,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: it's the same thing that happened to the music industry.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I think, to a large extent, the price point is
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: way too high, and people aren't going to keep shelling out,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: especially when you have to go to the movie theater,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that amount of money just to enjoy a crappy movie.
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: 3Ds, I don't know actually what the prices are here,
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: but in LA, it's like $ 16.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: 50 for one movie ticket. It's pretty close here, yeah.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: It's just absurd now.
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: I took kids at a matinee to see a 3D
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: and spent $ 32. 00. For a matinee for kids, you know,
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: you think.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: For kids, right.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I think it might actually kind of go in a
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: direction where there will be sort of those big tentpole releases,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: maybe one or two of those studios will survive, and
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: they're going to, you know, make these giant movies, and
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: it's going to be more of like this giant, they're
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: going to try to make it a giant experience.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: But, you know.
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: Like reinvent the Lord of the Rings or something, like
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: they'll just do something really cool.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: Well, it's going to be more, you know, spectacle, like
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: you want to go in, you know, have dinner in
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the theater.
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: Yeah, I think they need to explore, like, the theater.
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: I mean, the Alamo Drafthouse is gold. That's one of
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: the best chains of vehicles I've ever been to. And
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: it's not because it's pretty or nice. I mean, it's
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: kind of smelly and it's kind of messy and dirty
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: and run down, but it's the best movie experience you
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: can get.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: They bring you food, they bring you drinks.
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, that's one of the high points of
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: living in Austin is getting to go see movies there.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and the audience's perspective and wants are going to
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: change once they start to really encounter more different types
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: of films you know because i think most people just
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: kind of are going through their day and then you
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: know maybe like they'll go see a movie on the
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: weekend and they'll just go see whatever you know is
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: out it's sort of popular but i think as it
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: becomes more uh easily accessible it's gonna the shift in
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: taste is going to occur at least that's what i hope.
- 1:11:42Speaker 7: For probably yeah i think yeah in the next 10
- 1:11:46Speaker 7: years it's some radical changes.
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: Going on yeah absolutely That's assuming the world doesn't end
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: on December 21st, 2012.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: That's true.
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: We're almost out of here, really. A couple more months,
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: we'll pack it up.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: I'm going to find John Cusack.
- 1:12:01Speaker 11: He's your guy.
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: I'm going to see if you can't help me out
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: of this place.
- 1:12:03Speaker 11: I'm going to just borrow a lot of money.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: I just hope he shows up at my house with
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: a bootleg.
- 1:12:11Speaker 11: Actually, I looked that up because when my kids were
- 1:12:13Speaker 11: in middle school, every day they were talking about the
- 1:12:16Speaker 11: end of the world and they were.
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Freaked out about it.
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: I looked it up.
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: The whole thing comes from one guy.
- 1:12:21Speaker 11: It's like this new age guy from Wisconsin came up
- 1:12:24Speaker 11: with the 2012... Nobody who studies Mayan.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Calendars seriously sees.
- 1:12:30Speaker 11: Anything about that. He's just one guy, but it's such
- 1:12:34Speaker 11: a fun story.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: It makes for a good time.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: People have been saying the end of the world is
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: going to come for a long time.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: The world has been ending for as long as humanity
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: has been alive.
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: In a sense, you have to understand it like it's
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: an end of an era. It's an end of a certain.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: Way of doing things i guess.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: Everything passes through its life cycle it's death rebirth death
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: rebirth so i see no reason to assume that this
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: is going to be whatever the world's going to be
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: going through in the next 10 15 years i see
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: no reason why it would be any different.
- 1:13:03Speaker 11: Well, one thing will always be with us, and it's
- 1:13:06Speaker 11: going to be those bagged ice boxes. They say ice, and.
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: They have like a little snow drift on the letters.
- 1:13:14Speaker 11: Those have been around since I was.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: A baby, and they're still going to be.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: You always are going to have to go get a
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: bag of ice.
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: Okay, water can be piped.
- 1:13:26Speaker 19: No, no, no, no.
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: We need a bag.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: But no, you have to go get your.
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: Stop on your way and get a bag.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: It's always annoying. You have to crush it up.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: You have to take the bag and beat it on
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: the sink.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: Those are never fun.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: I always picture the guy that loads the bag like,
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: you know... I mean, I'm sure it's all mechanical, but yeah,
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: I just, I don't know. I always question where my
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: ice comes from. Like, especially if you go to a,
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: if you've gone to a restaurant or whatever, or a,
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: or this fast food restaurant and.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: You get the ice.
- 1:13:58Speaker 11: You didn't see that study, did you?
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: They don't put it on the machine.
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: Yeah, they didn't see that study.
- 1:14:02Speaker 13: I can't.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's terrible.
- 1:14:03Speaker 11: It was a kid's science project. She found out there
- 1:14:07Speaker 11: was more bacteria in the ice machine at the restaurant
- 1:14:10Speaker 11: than in the commode.
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: Nice.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Yummy.
- 1:14:14Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: Oh, wow. So, yeah.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: That only makes you stronger, guys. It helps your immune system.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:14:22Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: It's not the bacteria, it's the point. Beavis and Butthead
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: were supposed to clean out that ice machine. Maybe I
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: don't want them doing it. Let's talk about movies, maybe.
- 1:14:37Speaker 7: We usually do a whole section of our geek activities.
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: That's just kind of what we've seen or what we've
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: done that we're geeky about. I was going to throw
- 1:14:46Speaker 7: it out there to you guys if you have anything
- 1:14:48Speaker 7: you've Seen or done or... If not, I can go
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: first and give you an example.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, could you please restate the question before I answer?
- 1:14:56Speaker 7: Mine's just sort of... No, that seems complicated. But I'll
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: tell you what I watched. And I had a couple
- 1:15:02Speaker 7: that I thought would be interesting to talk to you
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: guys about. I did just this past week watch The
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: House of the Devil, which I didn't know if you'd seen.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I feel like I may have seen that.
- 1:15:11Speaker 7: It's Ty West, so I thought that was... He's one
- 1:15:14Speaker 7: of those that was sort of an up-and-coming indie filmmaker,
- 1:15:17Speaker 7: and now he's... He's kind of making bigger projects and
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: getting stuff thrown at him, so I didn't know if
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: you guys had seen that one.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't seen that one yet, I don't think.
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: The most recent horror film that I saw was that...
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: Don't be afraid of the dark, the Guillermo del Toro.
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: I just– the produced one, yeah. I saw that a
- 1:15:33Speaker 7: couple weeks ago and it's– again, I kind of went
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: in with low expectations and enjoyed it really.
- 1:15:38Speaker 11: I love the old TV show.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: I thought it was fun.
- 1:15:40Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:15:41Speaker 7: It kind of– it felt like a really well-financed episode
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: of Goosebumps. It was just like– it felt like that.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: I think he's– I think I read he– saw it
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: on television as a kid or something originally and it
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: scared him to death it was the thing.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: That scared him one episode where this kid is uh
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: inside this abandoned mall and it's like he's playing he's
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: like inside of a video game kind of and it's
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: inside of this mall and he get he you know
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: he goes through each stage of the video game and
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: and he gets to the end and he wins and
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: then it starts all over again. And I remember that
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: was really terrifying.
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: You get an extra life.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it was about as uplifting as the ending of Insidious.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a feel-good film.
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: Guillermo del Toro, stylistically, he's got really neat vision. I
- 1:16:31Speaker 6: would have actually been interested to see what he would
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: have done with The Hobbit. I mean, obviously, I'm happy
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: Peter Jackson is doing it, but it would have been
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: really cool to see his visualization of that, I think.
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: Yeah, I was wondering what you thought. Because that's kind
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: of what I thought, too. I was like, well, we've
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: already seen what Jackson does with this little world. It's
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: like it would have been interesting to see it sort
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: of through his eyes and see what Del Toro does.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: I'm still happy because it feels like an extension of
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: the other movies.
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: But yeah, it definitely would have been neat to kind
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: of see it reinvented again.
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: I mean, I've got more stuff unless you guys have
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: seen anything interesting lately.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: That was the last thing. Oh, you saw... margaret recently
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: right there's that new great not not really horror related but.
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: I wouldn't necessarily horror related.
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: That's horror really.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: That was that was horror.
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: We went we went on a nice little tangent about
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: the vow last episode actually oh no oh that channing
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: to you.
- 1:17:28Speaker 16: I want to see the Harry Potter movie, the one
- 1:17:30Speaker 16: where Daniel Radcliffe's in the horror movie.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: It's out right now.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: I love how it's not a Harry Potter movie, but
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: you call it a Harry Potter movie.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: That's the only way you can really define it. Everybody
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: knew exactly what she was talking about when she said it.
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: You know, that new Harry Potter movie. The one without
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: Harry Potter.
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: He's a wizard this time.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: The trailer actually scared me, so I was like, man.
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: That little face effect was kind of creepy.
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a scared.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: Little girl now. I can't take horror movies anymore.
- 1:17:55Speaker 7: It's Sean's fault.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: He did it. It has to be. I don't.
- 1:18:02Speaker 19: Know.
- 1:18:02Speaker 7: Have you guys seen anything else?
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: I did finally see the Tucker and Dale versus evil.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: And I know we're on horror right now. I guess we're,
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: we're always on horror. It was, it was, it was
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: more heartwarming than I was anticipating. I was like, I
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: really like these people. I want to give them all
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: a hug.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: I love the idea of the misunderstood rednecks and the hot,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: horny teenage kids who just end up impaling themselves and
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: running over.
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: It's just so stupid. They keep killing them. When the
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: first one that's running, it happens.
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: I go, oh, that's where I'm going with this. What
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: was that Bruce Campbell one that he did? My Name
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: is Bruce or something like that. Where he's playing, he's
- 1:18:51Speaker 6: Bruce Campbell as Bruce Campbell fighting... bruce campbell bruce campbell.
- 1:18:57Speaker 7: They bring him in and he thinks he's doing like
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: a personal appearance or something like no we want you
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: to stop this evil.
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: In our area yeah yeah juan d that was that
- 1:19:04Speaker 6: was the evil guy's name it's like fun idea.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: Bruce campbell does the three amigos like they bring him
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: in for.
- 1:19:10Speaker 22: An appearance and he just does it all it's kind
- 1:19:12Speaker 22: of what it is yeah i mean that's what sold
- 1:19:15Speaker 22: that movie it's bruce campbell you know it's like you
- 1:19:17Speaker 22: can't not like bruce campbell The movie's got its issues,
- 1:19:20Speaker 22: but Bruce was.
- 1:19:21Speaker 7: Bruce is awesome in everything.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: The entire movie was an issue.
- 1:19:24Speaker 7: Yeah, kind of.
- 1:19:25Speaker 11: Oh, and I did see.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: Yellow Brick Road.
- 1:19:31Speaker 6: Was that the two-part series with Zooey Deschanel?
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: No. This is a horror movie, right?
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: This was a horror movie.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: Yeah, this was about... It's like one of those real story...
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: A town back in the 19... maybe 1940, everyone in
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: the town, somewhere in northern New Hampshire. You picture it
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: being close to the Canadian border or something like that,
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: or somewhere up. And the town just up and walks out,
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: goes on a hike out of town, and they all
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: end up dead, missing, whatever. And so a research group
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: that's writing a book goes to... First mistake. Right. It
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: goes to follow the trail, and it has a good setup,
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: and it has some good points, but it's like they
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: didn't know how to end it.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Yeah, if you can end a movie well, people will
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: forgive almost anything.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: But it has a lot of tie-ins with film and
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: old movie theaters, and so that's what drew me to
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: it now it's you know it was something else that
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: i saw.
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: I actually uh my my girlfriend surprised me for valentine's
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: day and took me to see journey to the island
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: and uh yeah that's one of the best worst movies
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: i've seen in a long time that one was that
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: was a good time you kind.
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: Of know i mean When you're doing a sequel to
- 1:21:08Speaker 7: a Brendan Fraser movie, you're in trouble already.
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: Back in my young and wild days when I was
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: a big fan of the WWF at the time of WWF.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: The Rock was my guy.
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: I felt like I had to support him, but I'm
- 1:21:22Speaker 6: kind of losing that over time because it just keeps
- 1:21:24Speaker 6: getting worse and worse.
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: We've said this a lot on that show. We kind
- 1:21:28Speaker 7: of like The Rock. They keep giving him such bad properties,
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: but he's so likable. Even as an actor now, he's
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: gotten to the point where He can deliver some pretty
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: good performances. Where did you see that?
- 1:21:43Speaker 11: Well, he has a sense of humor about him.
- 1:21:45Speaker 7: Be cool. Did you see that one?
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: The movie's terrible.
- 1:21:48Speaker 7: He is hilarious. He is the best part of that
- 1:21:52Speaker 7: movie by far.
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: There's a few scenes in South Point Tales that he's okay.
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: Oh, he's, again, hilarious.
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: And others are like, is he acting? What the hell
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: is that movie about?
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: Does anybody really know?
- 1:22:04Speaker 7: We spent an entire episode on that one. We still
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: can't really tell.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I've seen it multiple times.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: They love to take the big action stars and then
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: put tutus on them. Or put him.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: To a woman.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Yeah, let them have little kids. They have to watch
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: these little kids.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: That's the height of comedy for them.
- 1:22:19Speaker 11: That's interesting.
- 1:22:20Speaker 16: I really want.
- 1:22:21Speaker 10: To see that movie, Michael.
- 1:22:23Speaker 16: Do you remember? It was like a German movie with
- 1:22:24Speaker 16: that guy that has someone in his house.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. We were at this little independent theater in L.A.,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: and they show this trailer. Was it called Michael?
- 1:22:35Speaker 10: It's called Michael.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys should watch the trailer.
- 1:22:38Speaker 10: It's German, so it's subtitles. You've got to use a
- 1:22:39Speaker 10: little bit of English.
- 1:22:40Speaker 7: I was so afraid you were talking about the John
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: Travolta movie. No, you don't. For the love of God,
- 1:22:49Speaker 7: stay away from it.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: It's one of the best trailers I've ever seen. Just
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: really artistic.
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Really, at the end, just, oh, man, I've got to
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: see that movie.
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: And is it?
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: Overall premise, or you're just kind of like, you're not
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: even sure, just the visuals are suckering you in.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: They didn't have to kill you.
- 1:23:07Speaker 10: It's better not to know when you watch this trailer.
- 1:23:10Speaker 7: That's true with most movies, but usually you don't make
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: it to that point.
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: No spoilers for the trailer.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: It's that good.
- 1:23:17Speaker 10: Everyone gasped in the theater.
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: This is a pretty good selling point.
- 1:23:22Speaker 11: I don't know, but what if it turns out to
- 1:23:24Speaker 11: be just one of those super trailers and then the movies...
- 1:23:27Speaker 11: That happens.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: They give everything away.
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: It happens.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: You know, we saw... Last week we saw the 3D
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: trailer for the John Carter movie.
- 1:23:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: Which was a nice 3D trailer.
- 1:23:40Speaker 7: I can't decide what I think of this movie.
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: I know. And it's Disney and it's... Well.
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: Disney has a pretty good track record of actually putting
- 1:23:48Speaker 6: out some good product. I kind of have faith that
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: they put the time and money into developing their story.
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: So I'm hopeful that this will be something more.
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: Well, I remember when we first read about it, I
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: started talking about that they were going to do it.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: And it was like, well, it seems odd enough and
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: different enough that it could be fantastic. And my daughter,
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: she's eight. we saw the trailer that night on TV,
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: The 2D.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: And she goes, oh, that looks good. I said, we
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: saw that trailer this morning. She goes, yeah, that one
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: looked dumb. So it's the exact same trailer, but she,
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: you know. Yeah, wow.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: She has no filter.
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: I guess. Yeah, she thought this, you know, the one
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: on TV looked great.
- 1:24:31Speaker 7: So 3D ruins everything is what you're saying.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: You're right.
- 1:24:36Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: But that is one that's interesting me.
- 1:24:39Speaker 11: I'll see it.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: I'll definitely see that one.
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: It's, yeah, I definitely want to see it, but it
- 1:24:42Speaker 7: could go either way at this point. Like, I'm looking
- 1:24:44Speaker 7: at it, and I'm like, it could either be the
- 1:24:46Speaker 7: most awesome, epic, you know, ridiculous, huge.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Movie, or just train wreck. I want to see epic
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: that's not just epic for epic's sake, and just, like, spectacle,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: but something with soul in it, you know?
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: With some, you know, something behind it.
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: It kind of gets overlooked at this point, especially on
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: the big studio movies. Right, exactly. It's kind of left behind.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: Not since the Fast and the Furious.
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: The golden age of cinema. The golden age of cinema.
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: The golden age.
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: Fast Five, if you're going to work the rock game.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Come on now. They've already signed on for Six and
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: Seven or something.
- 1:25:22Speaker 7: That's not surprising.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: Nothing beats Tokyo Drift, though.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that was good.
- 1:25:26Speaker 7: They made so much money on the fifth one.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: It's ridiculous.
- 1:25:29Speaker 11: Yeah, they did.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I watched the last one with my grandma for some reason.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: That's interesting.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: I think she was just confused by the whole thing.
- 1:25:37Speaker 7: I am too.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: I took my nephew to see the one. I don't
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: even know them. But we saw the one where they
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: drive through this unbelievably long tunnel.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: That's the fourth one.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: That's the U.S.-Mexican border. Like, where is this that this exists?
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: There's a hole in the side of the mountain they
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: could drive.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: Through, yeah.
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: It's in movie land.
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: Right. You know, when.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: I first was introduced to.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: Vin Diesel when I saw Riddick or saw him as
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: Riddick in Pitch Black.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: Actually, I thought that movie was badass. I really loved
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: that movie.
- 1:26:10Speaker 7: I liked Pitch Black at the time.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: I became a fan of his and then As soon
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: as my parents heard his name, then it immediately became
- 1:26:17Speaker 6: Ben Dweeble. And, of course, I could never really go
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: back to liking him. You can't get that out of
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: your head once.
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: You hear it.
- 1:26:23Speaker 7: I kind of like that, and then we.
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: Start using it.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Sean has a habit of ascribing nicknames to everybody and everything.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: And they're generally not particularly positive.
- 1:26:30Speaker 7: It's like Misty, doesn't it? Yeah. She has her own
- 1:26:33Speaker 7: special names for most people.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: She's the unique member of the cast.
- 1:26:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:40Speaker 7: I know one of the other ones I was going
- 1:26:41Speaker 7: to see if you'd seen was just this past week,
- 1:26:43Speaker 7: Watch Drive.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: I didn't see that.
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: I saw that.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: I haven't seen that. I actually read the script for that.
- 1:26:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: The script was out, and I read it, and I'm
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: interested to see, because the opening sequence in the script,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: I was thinking that would be really, really cool.
- 1:26:57Speaker 6: For the next Indiana Jones, they should get Ryan Gosling
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: to play.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Indiana Jones. What's his name? Shia... Mutton Boy.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Indiana Jones. I mean, he is... To me, he is... Yeah, well,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: he could be, yeah.
- 1:27:12Speaker 7: Well, it's kind of what they were pretending like they
- 1:27:14Speaker 7: were doing that last time, is the literally passing the
- 1:27:16Speaker 7: hat thing, and then they backed out of it.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: Because they realized how insanely stupid it was.
- 1:27:21Speaker 7: Because they went, do we really want to give it
- 1:27:23Speaker 7: to this goofy kid? No, I don't think so.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: I actually thought Shia LaBeouf was one of the highlights
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: of that movie.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: His movie was so bad that it made him the highlight.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: I think he was actually really... really putting his heart
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: and soul into it.
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: He tries. It's just, he's another one they just cram
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: in the weirdest movies that, yeah, it's hard.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Well, then there was Transformers 3 that just would not...
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: I stay away from it.
- 1:27:46Speaker 7: I still haven't watched it.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: It's like 10 times over.
- 1:27:48Speaker 7: Don't do it.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I loved Transformers as a kid. I
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: was there from day one with the Transformers. I still
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: have dreams that are recurring dreams from when I was
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: a child of going into... stores and seeing new Transformers,
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: you know, like the new... And that feeling. So, Transformers...
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: And it was the point that it truly ruined it
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: for me when, in the second one, Devastator had balls.
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: You know, metal balls on a.
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: Because robots need that.
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: That was....
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: There was something about that that didn't sit well with you.
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: Right. I don't know what it is.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: We've all heard this story so many times.
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: And it really ruined it.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: And the other part of it is they went.
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: Out the back door of the Smithsonian and they were
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: in the Southwest. And I'm, what? You know, you're supposed to, okay,
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: I'm in a movie and I'm going to let this go,
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: but I can't let that go.
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: That's a pretty big oversight.
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: It's not Virginia, Utah.
- 1:28:49Speaker 7: Don't bring logic into Bay movies.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: Come on now.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: Michael Bay.
- 1:28:54Speaker 11: Michael Bay.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: Too many chefs in the kitchen on some of these movies.
- 1:28:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: And, you know, especially with Michael Bay, I know we're
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: talking about, and I'm complaining far too much for our guests.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: I get to a point where I'm in the theater
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: and there's so much going on and it's so quick
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: that I can't even see it. It's almost like it
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: becomes a blur. It is.
- 1:29:14Speaker 7: And it's his style is the sad part. That's how
- 1:29:17Speaker 7: they refer to it now. It's his visual style.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I like to watch those movies where it's paint drawings.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: It's like, okay, I get to sit and just reflect
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: on something and just... sit and be still and not
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: be inundated with.
- 1:29:27Speaker 11: Speaking of paint drying i watched an antonioni movie.
- 1:29:31Speaker 12: Yeah which one did you watch i watched blow up
- 1:29:36Speaker 12: oh yeah that's a good one yeah that's a fun
- 1:29:38Speaker 12: movie i really watched it because i had watched uh
- 1:29:41Speaker 12: the conversation not long ago yeah and i.
- 1:29:45Speaker 11: Heard cop below uh somewhere saying that when he made
- 1:29:48Speaker 11: it he was trying to make a movie like blow
- 1:29:51Speaker 11: up and.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Uh Brian De Palma did a version of that, right?
- 1:29:56Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually haven't seen that one yet, but that
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: is supposedly one of his best.
- 1:30:00Speaker 7: Yeah. Is that Blowout?
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Blow Out, Blow Up?
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: Blow Out he did. I don't think it's the same one,
- 1:30:10Speaker 7: but actually it is one of my favorite DePaulo movies.
- 1:30:13Speaker 11: It has some relationship to it.
- 1:30:15Speaker 7: It's got a little, yeah, but I don't think it's
- 1:30:17Speaker 7: the same script exactly, but I'm sure it's sort of
- 1:30:19Speaker 7: inspired by that kind of thing. But yeah, if you
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: find it, it's definitely worth watching, especially for Travolta before
- 1:30:26Speaker 7: he got to his crazy movies later. It's pretty good
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: for him early.
- 1:30:31Speaker 13: On, too.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: There's something when filmmakers, especially comedians, have kids or something,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: and they start doing family movies, and that's perfectly okay,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: but then they lose their edge, you know? They lose
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: their mojo.
- 1:30:46Speaker 7: I mean, you see people fighting with that. You look
- 1:30:48Speaker 7: at what Rodriguez has done.
- 1:30:49Speaker 11: Are you thinking of Sophie in Godfather 3?
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: He was in a bind, man. She was helping him out.
- 1:30:57Speaker 11: Actually, when his sister was in the first one, though,
- 1:31:00Speaker 11: and he really didn't like that, it made him really
- 1:31:02Speaker 11: tense to have his sister on the set. He was
- 1:31:05Speaker 11: tense enough, but.
- 1:31:09Speaker 7: I was going to go back to Dive. So in
- 1:31:12Speaker 7: the script that you read, was there just a lot
- 1:31:14Speaker 7: of pages of main character doesn't really say anything? Is
- 1:31:17Speaker 7: that how it plays out?
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: You know, when you read a script, it's like.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: You're really only following the story. Because you're not seeing
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: the actors perform it, you don't see anything. You're just
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: completely imagining it in your mind. So the only thing
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: you're really getting is the tension of, do I want
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: to keep reading the next page? So I think that
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: it's an entirely different form of.
- 1:31:40Speaker 11: Did you like the script?
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I did, yeah. I mean, especially... Sometimes you'll read a script,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: and I read the script for that movie with Kate Winslet,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: The Reader, where she's... and it didn't like yeah it
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: didn't do anything for me and then i saw the
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: movie and i was like wow that's that's when you
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: know you have a great director and a great act
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: not that the script was bad but.
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: It's like turned out to be a pretty.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Good visualized and all of a sudden it makes sense
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: to you like you didn't you didn't see.
- 1:32:08Speaker 7: It that way so how was drive finished product versus
- 1:32:12Speaker 7: what you read yeah absolutely was it close to it
- 1:32:16Speaker 7: or no Oh.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: I haven't seen Drive yet.
- 1:32:18Speaker 7: You haven't seen Drive?
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: I saw Drive. It was a good movie. It was
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: a very well done film.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Very engaging.
- 1:32:26Speaker 7: I mean, I think I'd heard too much about it,
- 1:32:28Speaker 7: but it is funny watching it because it really, like,
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: you can tell just how hard he's trying to make
- 1:32:33Speaker 7: this throwback 80s movie. I mean, it really... Which, again,
- 1:32:36Speaker 7: I don't know that that would come through in the
- 1:32:38Speaker 7: script version. But, yeah, the music.
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: Stylistically, they had some really unusual things.
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: Like the streets and the neon. And it's very like,
- 1:32:46Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: Like the peep riding.
- 1:32:47Speaker 7: It's Michael Mann, Miami Vice era.
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:32:50Speaker 7: Yeah, it's very interesting.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: I didn't get that from the script at all.
- 1:32:53Speaker 7: It's funny because it very much feels like that when
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: you're in it. It feels slightly out of time.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: It felt more like kind of a. I guess a
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: 70s character piece on the script.
- 1:33:04Speaker 7: It's kind of a mixture. When you look at the characters,
- 1:33:07Speaker 7: it doesn't fit that style. But then you look at
- 1:33:09Speaker 7: the aesthetics and the music and everything, and it definitely
- 1:33:13Speaker 7: has that heavily influenced on it. So it ends up
- 1:33:16Speaker 7: being pretty interesting. But yeah, I know Gosling's kind of
- 1:33:20Speaker 7: gotten a lot of flack for it not having a
- 1:33:23Speaker 7: lot of speaking moments in that movie which i didn't
- 1:33:26Speaker 7: it wasn't overwhelming i didn't i expected like people acted
- 1:33:29Speaker 7: like he didn't say anything the entire movie where i
- 1:33:32Speaker 7: mean he's just he's not a wordy character but you
- 1:33:35Speaker 7: know i i don't think it really detracted from.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: The movie i really wanted to see that movie uh
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: just i don't want to give anything away but the
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: There's a scene at the very, very end, and it's
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: just like one long shot. And the way they described
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: it in the script, I was like, if that works,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: that's really going to hit people. But I don't know
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: if it did or not.
- 1:33:54Speaker 7: I'm trying to decide what that was.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe they actually changed it.
- 1:33:59Speaker 11: I really enjoyed the casting in that movie. Everybody looked
- 1:34:05Speaker 11: exactly like they ought to look. You could almost just
- 1:34:08Speaker 11: cut to their faces and they just wore what they
- 1:34:12Speaker 11: needed to be.
- 1:34:12Speaker 7: The most impressive one is Albert Brooks. I mean, he's
- 1:34:16Speaker 7: so out of his element and yet kind of owns it.
- 1:34:19Speaker 11: He's like a cross between Robin Williams and John McEnroe.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: He's, yeah.
- 1:34:26Speaker 7: He's got those moments. It's like he still has that
- 1:34:29Speaker 7: sense of humor. You can still see it's him, but
- 1:34:31Speaker 7: he's still got a little bit of scary in him,
- 1:34:33Speaker 7: you know? Yeah, he covers through. He could go off,
- 1:34:36Speaker 7: and times needs to.
- 1:34:37Speaker 16: I actually read about his casting process for that, and
- 1:34:42Speaker 16: he said that he walked in and they said, well, why.
- 1:34:44Speaker 10: do you, why would you play this part? You've nothing,
- 1:34:46Speaker 10: no one sees you as this character. And he said,
- 1:34:48Speaker 10: that's exactly it.
- 1:34:49Speaker 16: Do you want to always cast the same Joe Schmo
- 1:34:51Speaker 16: that they'd expect?
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:34:53Speaker 16: You should take a chance on me. And just by
- 1:34:55Speaker 16: saying that, he, I think the addition.
- 1:34:58Speaker 7: I think that's why it worked. Cause yeah, he's cause
- 1:35:00Speaker 7: you look, um, who's the other bad guy, the, uh,
- 1:35:03Speaker 7: Ron Perlman.
- 1:35:04Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:35:04Speaker 7: Who again is, is good. But I mean, that's, that's
- 1:35:07Speaker 7: Ron Perlman. Like he gets cast in that tough guy
- 1:35:10Speaker 7: role and damn near everything's in. It's, It's unusual to
- 1:35:13Speaker 7: see him in anything other than that. And he can
- 1:35:16Speaker 7: do other stuff, but they always throw him in that,
- 1:35:18Speaker 7: you know, just big, burly, dumb guy, you know.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Unfortunately, Ron Perlman's look doesn't lend itself.
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: No, it doesn't.
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: Like, he's never going to be the romantic lead, really.
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: Beating the Beast is the only time.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: It's the closest he's going to get to that, exactly.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: He's always interested in a cast against type, you know.
- 1:35:35Speaker 11: He looked a little too much like the Rubber Mask.
- 1:35:40Speaker 11: you almost see something coming with.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: That yeah it's like that story you know they originally
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: cast robert redford in the graduate.
- 1:35:50Speaker 11: Yeah yeah and he turned it down because he wasn't
- 1:35:53Speaker 11: right for it yeah yeah.
- 1:35:54Speaker 7: Tom selleck is indiana jones i can't i can't see
- 1:35:57Speaker 7: it i'm sorry oh originally who was it nick nolte
- 1:36:00Speaker 7: was gonna be han sella oh.
- 1:36:04Speaker 11: Can you picture that?
- 1:36:05Speaker 13: Oh, God.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: You would have been a very gruff honzo.
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: Very gruff honzo.
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: He would have been.
- 1:36:09Speaker 11: You could see him, like, not really committing to.
- 1:36:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: He's not that charming.
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: You can imagine, like.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: The imitation of him, it's just in every movie.
- 1:36:19Speaker 11: He always, no matter what it is, he's always hungover.
- 1:36:21Speaker 11: He's just got up and he comes to some point
- 1:36:24Speaker 11: in the movie where he just goes, ah, geez.
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: Can't you see him like... With.
- 1:36:28Speaker 10: His hair like spewing out.
- 1:36:31Speaker 7: Can't you see him slumped over in the bar in
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: the cantina and just... Look, I don't have your money.
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: I'm not going to give you your money.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: Ah, jeez.
- 1:36:42Speaker 7: Ah, jeez. And then he shoots him first.
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: There's never been less gloss and more rough to Han Solo.
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: I mean, a space pirate that lives with a Wookiee
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: is pretty rough. That's true.
- 1:36:54Speaker 7: When, you know, that's what they wrote in, scruffy looking.
- 1:36:57Speaker 7: And I was just like, no, really. That was for
- 1:37:00Speaker 7: Nick Nolte.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: That was for Nick Nolte.
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: I still wonder what the world would be like if
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: Lynch had directed Return of the Jedi. I think that
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: could have... change the course.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: When it would would lynch it would have been a
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: lynchian movie or would it you know well.
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: It probably would have turned out like dude like dude
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: where nobody wants anything to do with it by the
- 1:37:18Speaker 7: end of.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: It because it's a good movie though but even he
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: doesn't like it i want to see like the lynchian
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: version of return of the jedi where the ewoks are
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: like terrifying you know could you even have.
- 1:37:29Speaker 7: Ewoks in a lynch movie oh yeah kind of now
- 1:37:33Speaker 7: that i think about it they're kind.
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: Of creepy yeah i'll A planet of babies from Eraserhead.
- 1:37:37Speaker 7: Yes, you know that.
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: I really liked it.
- 1:37:39Speaker 7: I could see that.
- 1:37:39Speaker 11: I think of all the movies that I can run
- 1:37:42Speaker 11: through my brain quickly. If David Lynch could direct Gone
- 1:37:46Speaker 11: with the Wind, I would just love to see it.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Wow, that's interesting. That'd be wild.
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: You ever get enough money, just go to him and say,
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: I'm going to pay for you.
- 1:37:56Speaker 16: Go.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: Just do it.
- 1:37:57Speaker 7: It's time for a reboot. I'm going to do it
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: my own special way.
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: He could probably tear up Wizard of Oz, too.
- 1:38:03Speaker 7: That would lend itself to him, actually.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: Alice in Wonderland, any of those twisted down movies.
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: Crazy fairy tale.
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: I do fear, though, that, like, Tim Burton will wake
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: up one day and say that he wants to do
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: Wizard of Oz.
- 1:38:19Speaker 7: Well, I mean, they're doing more movies. There's two of
- 1:38:21Speaker 7: them in the works right now.
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: Maybe he won't.
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: Maybe he won't wake.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: Up that day.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: If he does it with Johnny, I was just.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Like the thing with wizard of oz there's so much
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: more i mean you can do it completely i love
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: the wizard of oz the original one like it's one
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: of my favorite movies but you especially with the source
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: material you can do it in a really interesting intriguing way.
- 1:38:41Speaker 7: Yeah that's what i've thought for years i was like
- 1:38:43Speaker 7: just don't remake the first one. There's 40 books in
- 1:38:46Speaker 7: that series. There's all these other characters, all these other worlds.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I like that Return to Oz.
- 1:38:52Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a weird, creepy movie. That's a very creepy movie.
- 1:39:00Speaker 11: I want to see the Coen brothers do it.
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: That's good.
- 1:39:06Speaker 7: It depends. They've got different modes. It's like they do
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: stuff relatively straight sometimes.
- 1:39:12Speaker 11: They could just take that tornado coming from the end
- 1:39:14Speaker 11: of A Serious Man and start it there.
- 1:39:17Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: It'd be a lot more humor and a lot more pathos.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: The Coen Brothers Wizard of Oz. Yeah.
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh, man.
- 1:39:27Speaker 11: Tommy Lee Jones would be the wizard.
- 1:39:32Speaker 7: This is frightening.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: So you guys, do you have any questions about the
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: actual movie?
- 1:39:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I was going to say, as far as you
- 1:39:42Speaker 7: brought up Lance, what's it like directing him?
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: I just was in the dentist the other day, and
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: there was an advertisement for a new type of braces,
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: and it said, easy, painless, beautiful. So I think, uh, that's, that's,
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: that's how I would describe it. No, he's great. I mean, he,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: he really is a true artist. You know, he's a,
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: he's not just an actor, he's a potter, he's a painter,
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: you know, and, um.
- 1:40:08Speaker 7: He talked about pottery quite a bit when I talked
- 1:40:10Speaker 7: to him.
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: He brought, he brought a lot to the role. He
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: brought a lot of humanity and he's a real, he's
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: really collaborative. He's really creative. I mean, he wrote, you know,
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: we improvised a lot of the movie and, and he
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: wrote a monologue for the film and, Yeah, it was
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: just great, you know, because it could have been bad,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: you know, having a first-time director working with a really
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: experienced actor like that, because if you come to the
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: set with that kind of ego, you know, it infects everybody.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: It infects the entire mood of the set. It becomes nasty,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: but he brought cheerfulness and just, you know, he really
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: wanted to go in and make this movie and make
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: it about something real. So, yeah, it was just fantastic
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: working with him.
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: So.
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: I kind of put myself in your shoes there for
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: a split second. If he signed the paperwork and said,
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: I'm going to do this with you, I think the
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: next day, at first I'd probably be elated, and then
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: the next day I would probably wake up and panic.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: Now what am I going to do? Were there waves
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: of that? How did that make you feel the first time?
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: I actually was extremely nervous up until I said action
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: for the first time, and then it just kind of
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: went away. Although I forgot to tell Lance his cue
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: on the first take I've ever shot. He's at the
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: base of this tree, and he's supposed to wake up,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: and I forgot to tell him. So he just kind
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: of was sleeping there for.
- 1:41:40Speaker 7: About two minutes.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: So I just kicked him in the head.
- 1:41:44Speaker 7: This ought to do it.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: No, but I mean, making a film is like a
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: runaway train. You just got to hang on for dear life. Yeah, it's...
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: It was really exhilarating. I'll always remember that experience.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: You'll always remember your first time.
- 1:41:58Speaker 7: With Lance.
- 1:41:59Speaker 6: One of our alternate titles, Spitting with Dad.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: Spitting with Dad, yeah.
- 1:42:06Speaker 7: That's a question, Sean. What's it like having Lance as
- 1:42:08Speaker 7: your dad? That was badass.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it was great.
- 1:42:14Speaker 6: Lance made it so much easier, I think, for both
- 1:42:17Speaker 6: of us to do what we had to do, especially
- 1:42:19Speaker 6: as first-timers, because he's so easy to work with. He
- 1:42:25Speaker 6: shows up, he does his job, and he doesn't complain.
- 1:42:28Speaker 6: And so while we're trying to deal with all the
- 1:42:31Speaker 6: nightmares of making a movie that just go along with
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: the turf, Lance was such a good sport. So on
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: that level, it made it. it was a tremendous experience.
- 1:42:41Speaker 6: And then in terms of acting, you know, it's your
- 1:42:45Speaker 6: partner makes you perfect and, you know, vice versa as
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: an actor, it's your job to make your partner perfect.
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Lance is already perfect. So I didn't
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: really have to do anything there. It was really, it
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: was really all initial. And he's just trying to make
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: me perfect.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: Bring me up to speed.
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: Well, as far as, um, you, you both kind of
- 1:43:04Speaker 7: worked on the story. Where did the idea come.
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: From for this project?
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: Um, it, you know, it evolved as, as we evolved,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: we've always been chasing what this movie has been about.
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: And we've, we've had, we had drafts from, you know,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: five years ago and we've written, we wrote probably 12 drafts.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: We were editing for ever, you know, they say there's
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: the movie, you write the movie, shoot the movie, you edit.
- 1:43:28Speaker 6: Um, we had the movie, you wrote 10 times, the movie,
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: you shoot like one and a half times, movie edit
- 1:43:34Speaker 6: at least 15 times.
- 1:43:36Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: Uh, so I don't know. I just, uh, we knew
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: we wanted to make a movie that was, there's certain
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: conditions on it. And I always like creative projects where
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: they say, okay, you have a cat, you know, a
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: bus station, you know, and you know, whatever, and you
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: have to try to make a story out of it.
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: And so we knew we wanted to make a two
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: person character piece that was, you know, set in the woods.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: And those were kind of our limitations that we set
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: in ourselves because we knew it was going to be
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: a low budget film. And then, you know, we, It
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: came out of some dark place because it ended up
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: being pretty dark, but ultimately it's kind of uplifting as well.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: It really isn't just like a slasher movie where it's
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: about teenage girls being sliced up. It's human horror. It's
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: the horror of the way we deal with relationships and
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: how we treat people.
- 1:44:35Speaker 7: Rose, how did you get involved in it?
- 1:44:37Speaker 16: Well, actually, I went to school with Scooter, so I
- 1:44:41Speaker 16: think he had me sort of in mind. The character
- 1:44:45Speaker 16: that I play is actually Sean's stepsister, her name's Iris.
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: Adopted sister.
- 1:44:51Speaker 10: Adopted sister, correct.
- 1:44:53Speaker 16: And so they kind of gave her an essence, which
- 1:44:56Speaker 16: is really like this radiant sun, sunflower essence, which they lose.
- 1:45:02Speaker 16: And that's kind of like the horror aspect of losing
- 1:45:04Speaker 16: the light in your life. And so I think he
- 1:45:07Speaker 16: had me in mind with that. He'd always seen me
- 1:45:08Speaker 16: that way. So he had me come to Texas and.
- 1:45:11Speaker 10: Audition for it.
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it was an interesting challenge for her in that
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: part because in a way she was playing an idealization
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: of a person, not really a person. Because... In the movie,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: he is having flashbacks and remembering this girl, and so
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: he kind of goes from a sort of idealization of
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: her into the reality. She was more playing an essence
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: or an archetypal character. She did great, though, and has
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: a lot of screen presence.
- 1:45:53Speaker 7: Anything else you guys had for the Movie itself?
- 1:45:56Speaker 11: I'm curious a little bit about what it's like filming
- 1:45:59Speaker 11: in the woods, because I've noticed about myself, I have
- 1:46:03Speaker 11: a tendency to favor movies that have woods in them.
- 1:46:06Speaker 11: There's just something about.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: We love just forest and woods imagery. It's very, just
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: something that's in our blood. We originally actually tried to
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: shoot this movie on a set, because we kind of
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: wanted to try to do the spooky hollow type really
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: uh stylized almost theatrical but we felt like we weren't
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: going to be able to get what we wanted so
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: we thought okay well let's just throw it into the
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: real woods and that ultimately was probably a great choice
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: because it lends itself to a certain reality even though
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: these characters are dealing with these sort of supernatural events
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: they're thrown into a real environment and you can't fake
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: you know reality you know we were out there and
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: it was it was in the middle of a huge
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: drought in texas.
- 1:46:53Speaker 6: I mean, there were scorpions and rattlesnakes and water moccasins.
- 1:46:57Speaker 6: I mean, it was down and dirty shooting.
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: It was really, really rough and tumble.
- 1:47:03Speaker 7: And then they were like, Sean, go lay down and
- 1:47:05Speaker 7: all that.
- 1:47:05Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: And Sierra just had me do that for fun. It
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: wasn't even using it for the movie. That's not even
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: in the script. Hey, Sean. I was like this dancing
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: puppet creature.
- 1:47:14Speaker 10: Sounds like a character in your film.
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. Yeah, it absolutely is a character.
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: For sure. For sure.
- 1:47:24Speaker 7: I guess we can let you guys escape here in
- 1:47:27Speaker 7: a minute. Where should people go? Should they go to
- 1:47:30Speaker 7: the website, or what's the best place to find out information?
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got our website. It's inthebloodthemovie.com. That's going to
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: have all of our information on it. You can also
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: follow us on Twitter at InTheBloodMovie. We'll be posting interviews
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: and links to all the different film festival announcements and
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: all that. So yeah, check out our website, Twitter. We're
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: on Facebook. tinyurl.com slash ITTV Facebook.
- 1:47:58Speaker 10: Definitely check out the trailer.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Yeah, check out the trailer.
- 1:48:01Speaker 7: The trailer looks good. Yeah, it's in the blood. Did
- 1:48:04Speaker 7: you guys put that together or hand it over to someone?
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: He did it all. This man was also one of
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: the editors.
- 1:48:10Speaker 7: See, that's the way they should do it. Once you
- 1:48:12Speaker 7: get to the big projects and they just give it
- 1:48:14Speaker 7: to the studio and go, here, make a trailer. Sometimes
- 1:48:17Speaker 7: that's when you get those messed up trailers.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Yeah, well, there's a certain formula to those trailers, and
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I think there's a lot. It's a little art piece.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: You have a little short film, so you've got to
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: try to do something creative and new. People respond to that.
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:33Speaker 7: All right, so I guess, yeah, go to the website
- 1:48:35Speaker 7: or go find you online, and you're making the rounds
- 1:48:38Speaker 7: at this point, so look for it at film festivals
- 1:48:40Speaker 7: or wherever Lance shows up, maybe check and see.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:48:44Speaker 7: All right, well, thank you guys for coming in and
- 1:48:47Speaker 7: talking to us.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: Thanks a lot for having us.
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun.
- 1:48:49Speaker 11: Definitely.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:49:08Speaker 7: The rascal driver and.
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: Would in mid-sentence drop out because of her prescriptions she
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: would just drop out and people it became so bad
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: that people would make the cricket noise you know because
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: she would just disappear from the world well she loved
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: steven seagal she would talk about steven seagal all the
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: time they were the oh is it kind of like
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: your sin bad guy Sinbad.
- 1:49:36Speaker 7: Oh, that guy. And just would go on and on.
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: Oh, Tiffany.
- 1:49:40Speaker 7: Oh, Tiffany.
- 1:49:41Speaker 4: I think you said Tiffany so that he wouldn't be identified.
- 1:49:44Speaker 11: Yeah, like, there'll be a guy out there who doesn't
- 1:49:51Speaker 11: know anything, but he loves Sinbad.
- 1:49:55Speaker 7: But that can't be me, because I'm not named Tiffany.
- 1:49:58Speaker 7: I mean, it's crazy.
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: She said, I've seen every Steven Seagal movie ever made,
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: and I said... have you seen against the dark?
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: And she said, no.
- 1:50:08Speaker 4: And she looked it up and she gets up from
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: her desk. Her daughter is in a hole, um, 50
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: yards away. And she gets up, gets in her little
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: rascal and speeds over there, baby, baby, we got to
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: get this movie. And I, it just, it just tickled me.
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: I wanted, and the next day I had to go
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: ask her how she loved it. She thought it was
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: the best movie ever.
- 1:50:36Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: I think we're done. I think we're going to get
- 1:50:39Speaker 7: the hell out of here. So that having been said, okay, kids,
- 1:50:42Speaker 7: get out your Dakota pins.
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: Set your pins to B2.
- 1:50:45Speaker 11: Here is the message.
- 1:50:50Speaker 7: That wasn't highly caffeinated.
- 1:50:51Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:50:52Speaker 11: I'm going to bring a harmonica next time.
- 1:50:55Speaker 7: Are you going to have the cool neck brace piece
- 1:50:57Speaker 7: that you could be all Dylan-like?
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: I'm going to bring that.
- 1:51:00Speaker 7: The thing is, I know that because I've seen you
- 1:51:02Speaker 7: wearing it before.
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: I'm going to bring the blues traveler vest that he
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: sticks them all in the pockets.
- 1:51:06Speaker 7: Your bandolier. You're just going to pretend like you're Chewie,
- 1:51:10Speaker 7: don't lie. Alright. With that, it is time for the
- 1:51:16Speaker 7: Movie Meltdown Secret Circle reveal of the next exciting show.
- 1:51:19Speaker 7: It's not just a feature. It's several episodes of ridiculousness
- 1:51:24Speaker 7: and And it's a year coming around. It is time
- 1:51:28Speaker 7: for the fourth annual Oscar Meltdown.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: I'm trying to make a melting sound.
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: I can feel my arteries clogging already.
- 1:51:36Speaker 7: It's, yeah. We're going to do it a little different
- 1:51:38Speaker 7: this time. On purpose, you know, I've kind of done it,
- 1:51:42Speaker 7: you know, the last few years it's been in my
- 1:51:44Speaker 7: house and we're making food in the kitchen, which is fun,
- 1:51:46Speaker 7: but I've done that three times now. So it's like,
- 1:51:48Speaker 7: just to mix it up, you know, we're going to
- 1:51:50Speaker 7: head on back to Nancy's and, you know, take over
- 1:51:54Speaker 7: the kitchen this time and start making food. And yeah,
- 1:51:57Speaker 7: so it'll mix things up a little bit. We've got
- 1:52:00Speaker 7: the invite out. We'll see who we can sucker in
- 1:52:02Speaker 7: to come into this thing. So we've got a few
- 1:52:05Speaker 7: people signed on. We have a good crowd. We're going
- 1:52:08Speaker 7: to have lots of food. Whether or not we watch
- 1:52:10Speaker 7: the Oscars is still up in the air. That will
- 1:52:13Speaker 7: be seen next week.
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: Maybe we'll stream it on somebody's phone.
- 1:52:15Speaker 7: We'll see how that goes. This should all be very interesting.
- 1:52:19Speaker 7: And if nothing else, we're going to... Now, I've been thinking,
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: you know, in years past, you know, after the first
- 1:52:26Speaker 7: Oscar Meltdown, then you get Oscar Meltdown 2, Electric Boogaloo,
- 1:52:30Speaker 7: Oscar Meltdown in 3D. So the fourth in most series,
- 1:52:34Speaker 7: specifically in horror, usually likes to go to space. So
- 1:52:38Speaker 7: I'm thinking we also need to follow suit, and being
- 1:52:41Speaker 7: our pork-related fun, it needs to be, you know, Oscar Meltdown,
- 1:52:44Speaker 7: Pigs in Space! Pigs in Space!
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: That was very nicely done.
- 1:52:50Speaker 7: See, he's a professional. That damn straight. So with that,
- 1:52:53Speaker 7: we also felt we need to watch a space-themed movie.
- 1:52:58Speaker 7: And this one has been on the back burner for
- 1:53:00Speaker 7: quite a while. I bought a horrible DVD copy for
- 1:53:04Speaker 7: that very reason. Probably within the first year of the
- 1:53:07Speaker 7: show I've had this thing because it fit our video
- 1:53:11Speaker 7: boxes to warp my brain. It looked really cheesy. It's
- 1:53:14Speaker 7: got Klaus Kinski in it, so it's got all the
- 1:53:18Speaker 7: makings of an epic episode. So we're going to watch Creature,
- 1:53:23Speaker 7: Klaus Kinski in Space. It's, yeah, no good will come
- 1:53:27Speaker 7: of this. So I'm sure it's probably won a couple
- 1:53:31Speaker 7: Oscars that year. So, I mean, it fits in perfectly.
- 1:53:36Speaker 11: It's based on a short story, I understand, called Klaus
- 1:53:40Speaker 11: Kinski in Space.
- 1:53:42Speaker 7: That was the working title.
- 1:53:44Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:53:44Speaker 7: I think, yeah, I think it was.
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:53:49Speaker 7: Anything else we need to pass along this week?
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: No, I don't think so.
- 1:53:53Speaker 7: Go vote for us in the rondos. Yes. Other than that,
- 1:53:56Speaker 7: thank you once again to our guests this week, and
- 1:53:58Speaker 7: go check out their movie. Again, it's inthebloodthemovie.com, so go
- 1:54:03Speaker 7: check it out and see where it will be heading,
- 1:54:06Speaker 7: probably somewhere near.
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: You in the future.
- 1:54:09Speaker 7: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next week.
- 1:54:12Speaker 7: Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:54:15Speaker 15: Got to keep moving on the red hot floor. Eyes
- 1:54:19Speaker 15: wide open and my nerves are raw.
- 1:54:22Speaker 6: Feeling more moving.
- 1:54:26Speaker 15: Or is it moving me? Look out honey, cause they're
- 1:54:46Speaker 15: using technology. Forget the blood, cervical ain't clean.
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: But it's a full moon.
- 1:54:54Speaker 15: And you're a mammal, not a machine.
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: Got to keep moving on.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: The red hot floor. Eyes wide open and my nerves
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: are raw.
- 1:57:01Speaker 11: I think it's called Animal Crossing. It's the Amish video game.
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 1:57:08Speaker 10: No.
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 1:57:10Speaker 11: No, it's something where you go out and you chop
- 1:57:13Speaker 11: wood and.
- 1:57:14Speaker 6: Then you go to bed and you build furniture.
- 1:57:21Speaker 7: It's kind of Amish.
- 1:57:23Speaker 11: It seems like you just have a little house and
- 1:57:25Speaker 11: you grow vegetables.
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: And you chop wood.
- 1:57:28Speaker 11: I think maybe you get to fish.
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: It's kind of like the Amish version of Second Life
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: or whatever that game's called.
- 1:57:35Speaker 7: Yeah, the most boring Second Life. Something like that.
- 1:57:39Speaker 11: But I remember one day he was about seven or
- 1:57:42Speaker 11: eight and he came downstairs and he realized that this
- 1:57:45Speaker 11: girl was trying to get him to ask her out.
- 1:57:50Speaker 7: On the video game and.
- 1:57:52Speaker 4: He missed it. He didn't get it till later after
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: she left. She's like, what are you doing?
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: He's like, I'm just chopping this wood.
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: See you later.
- 1:58:01Speaker 7: And then she walks off and he's like, Oh no.
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: And he comes down and he's crushed.
- 1:58:07Speaker 11: He's like, no, I'm never going to get married.
- 1:58:13Speaker 6: Didn't adequately prepare your son for that yeah i know
- 1:58:16Speaker 6: that was your false father right there stuff sneaks up
- 1:58:20Speaker 6: on you it's sad it's a sad story.
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: He was really upset.
- 1:58:25Speaker 11: And, you know, he was just upset because he's trying
- 1:58:27Speaker 11: to beat the game, but it sounded so sad.
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: I missed my chance.
- 1:58:33Speaker 7: Now I'm never going to get married.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: And they say Grand Theft Auto will mess you up. Yeah,
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: it's the Amish games that really get to you.
- 1:58:40Speaker 5: This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced and
- 1:58:43Speaker 5: edited by The Oddity Studios, with opening music performed by
