Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Agribusiness had a cracky year in twenty twenty five, but
- 0:02Speaker 1: farmers are being worn. Don't pop the champagne just yet.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Rabobanks Is twenty twenty six comes with headwinds global politics,
- 0:09Speaker 1: industry rules and the weather. Fed farmers are talian Canterbury
- 0:13Speaker 1: to stock up now with winter feed pressure looming. Mid
- 0:16Speaker 1: Canterbury Fed Farmer's President David Ackland joins me. Now, David,
- 0:19Speaker 1: good morning, Good morning Ron. So what yes, last year
- 0:23Speaker 1: was great. What are you worried about this year?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well, what we're worried about is just the storms that
- 0:29Speaker 2: went through the arable farms. We had a number of
- 0:31Speaker 2: hailstorms take out a of feed free Christmas and then
- 0:35Speaker 2: they've just had a bit of a tricky harvest coming
- 0:36Speaker 2: through this January period. So it's more about making sure
- 0:39Speaker 2: farmers are connecting with their supplies, with their growers for
- 0:42Speaker 2: winter feed and just just double checking out that all
- 0:46Speaker 2: those contracts and that feeder is in place. It's just
- 0:48Speaker 2: a sort of more of a heads up rather than
- 0:51Speaker 2: getting to May and having a situation where we've got
- 0:54Speaker 2: cows with nowhere to go.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So it's not panic stations just yet.
- 1:00Speaker 2: No, it's not panic stations. It's just hey, guys, make
- 1:04Speaker 2: it's time to check in and just secure that feed.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We've seen a fat you know, straw and that side
- 1:11Speaker 2: of things with the tricky harvest being mulched back into
- 1:14Speaker 2: the ground rather than bailed. So it's just you know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: there's just a few pressures there and it's a bit
- 1:18Speaker 2: of change around with a few Derek convisions happening in
- 1:21Speaker 2: that side of thing. So there's a few dynamics happening
- 1:23Speaker 2: that we just need to get people to actually make
- 1:27Speaker 2: those phone calls early.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The wind you mentioned last year, the how and the
- 1:31Speaker 1: wind was pretty hectic. A lot of machinery was sort
- 1:34Speaker 1: of tipped over because of that wind. How's the repairs going.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think that we've had they've had a pretty good
- 1:42Speaker 2: run of it. I know in those early stages there's
- 1:44Speaker 2: a lot of but the crews and irrigation companies, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 2: hell of a job to get get into the country
- 1:52Speaker 2: and also to get things back up right. But there
- 1:55Speaker 2: was a really critical of sewing and that side of things,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and it was pretty dry. So always what deft crops
- 2:02Speaker 2: that would have been affected through that will be back.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, they only have to be a couple of
- 2:06Speaker 2: three tons of feed and it makes actually a big
- 2:08Speaker 2: difference across the whole province. So it's just that those
- 2:11Speaker 2: little shortages that are just adding up a wee bit
- 2:13Speaker 2: at the moment.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Was just talking about insurance, David, what's on farm insurance
- 2:17Speaker 1: like premium wires at the moment.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Ah, We renewed ours the other day and it feels
- 2:23Speaker 2: like it's sneaked up again, but it hasn't gone up
- 2:26Speaker 2: as readily as it has done and the you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: we had a hellish horizers there but it sort of
- 2:32Speaker 2: has just come to a new hire, it feels at
- 2:34Speaker 2: the moment.
- 2:35Speaker 1: All right, David, Good chat to you as always, David Acklin,
- 2:38Speaker 1: mid Canterbury Fed Farmer's President. For more from Early Edition
