- 0:03Melinda Lee: let's unleash your leadership voice today. Not in
- 0:08the future. Not maybe next time, sometime soon, I will. No, let's
- 0:14do it today. Because it matters. We need to hear your voice, your
- 0:19voice of leadership. And part of that means that we have to stop
- 0:26and pause. And ironically, listen, part of being an
- 0:30effective leader. And using your voice as a leader requires that
- 0:35we need to pause and listen and get intimate with the other
- 0:39person and listen to the other person. And not just listening
- 0:44for the words. Most of us are just listening to the other
- 0:48person's words and their tone, there's more to it. When we're
- 0:53listening to the words, sometimes we can get caught up
- 0:58with our judgments, our own thoughts about what I want to
- 1:02say, and especially if the other person is coming at you with
- 1:06their fears and accusing you of something and try to blame you
- 1:11for something. And so you're listening all these words. And
- 1:13then you want to come and defend yourself and think about what
- 1:17you're going to say and think about how it's not true and
- 1:20judging what they're saying. And then when that's happening, then
- 1:24we're not listening. And this is very difficult, especially if we
- 1:30want to defend our perspective. And we want it our way, right.
- 1:35And so all of us want it our way. But to have it your way,
- 1:40does mean that we need to listen, even if it's a different
- 1:43perspective. And so today, I'm going to give you some tips to
- 1:49do active listening to become a better listener, in hopes that
- 1:53your relationship and your communication skyrockets and
- 1:57gets more close gets better, so that we can be more productive
- 2:01together. And that those tips are going to come in the form of
- 2:05an accurate and the acronym is place, PLA CE, the first letter
- 2:13P stands for present, get present with yourself first,
- 2:19meaning we're going to let go of our own thoughts, our own
- 2:23judgments, our own concerns, our own opinions, and getting
- 2:28present with the other person. In order to do that I like to
- 2:34meditate, especially if I know I'm going to go into a conflict
- 2:38someone with a different perspective. I meditate first to
- 2:42clear out what my thoughts are clear out any judgments I may
- 2:46have. And so I can get super centred, and grounded. And that
- 2:51way I can fully pay attention be present to the other person
- 2:56without chiming in without letting them know how I feel.
- 3:02And that requires being present first and setting an intention
- 3:06that I'm going to be curious about the other person, I'm
- 3:09going to be really curious about what the other person is saying
- 3:13and feeling. And then once I'm present, then you can go into
- 3:18Listen, the L stands for listen, listen with empathy and listen
- 3:22with heart. So focus on the other person's words, their
- 3:28tone, their body language, listen for what they're saying.
- 3:34And beyond that, listen also to what they're feeling. Right? How
- 3:38many times have you been in a conflict, and the person is
- 3:43yelling or saying some things to you. And it may be nasty, right?
- 3:48And underneath that if you really listen with your heart,
- 3:52you're gonna hear that the person is actually concerned,
- 3:57they might be afraid, they might be concerned because they're not
- 4:02being heard. And so when you can listen with your heart, and it's
- 4:07difficult, do some breathing in the moment, breathe and know
- 4:12that you're safe. But listen with your heart going back into
- 4:16your heart with breathing, active breathing, and then that
- 4:19will allow you to open up to listen to that person's
- 4:24feelings. Not just the words but their feelings. And once you can
- 4:29hear that, then you go into the A in place was which is
- 4:34acknowledge, acknowledge the person's feelings, acknowledge
- 4:38their words, use a tool called mirroring mirroring exactly what
- 4:43they're saying. I hear that you were upset because the kids are
- 4:48not they're always on their phone and they're not getting
- 4:51good grades. I hear that you are concerned because I'm constantly
- 4:58late. It's So even if you don't agree with the what they're
- 5:02saying, you want to acknowledge what they're saying. And then
- 5:06deeper than that, you can actually acknowledge their
- 5:09feelings. I sense that you are concerned, and I sense that you
- 5:14are upset or discouraged or disappointed. So labelling and
- 5:19pointing out and acknowledging their feelings will help defuse
- 5:26the emotion, you'll find that the calm down, because when
- 5:30people's emotions are elevated, and more likely than not,
- 5:33they're just not feeling heard. And so really getting good at
- 5:38sensing their feelings, and just calling it out. I sense that
- 5:42you're concerned, I sense that you're frustrated, you're
- 5:46disappointed in me. Even though it's hard. You want to
- 5:52acknowledge it, because that will then allow you and the
- 5:56other person to have an understanding. And when there's
- 5:59understanding there's a connection. And when there's a
- 6:03connection and understanding, then you can move into speaking
- 6:07and speaking confidently with empathy, with compassion, and so
- 6:14we're in the C and E and place that communicate with empathy,
- 6:18communicate with compassion. Communicating to let the person
- 6:23know that you understand the person. And when you truly
- 6:28understand the person, or connect with a person, you're
- 6:32going to open up possibilities and perspectives and an
- 6:38opportunity to then go into solutions. Brainstorming, like
- 6:44what can we do together, that help build our relationship help
- 6:49increase our understanding of each other so that we can work
- 6:53more effectively together. So the next time you have an
- 7:00opportunity to unleash your voice, Li, see the person into
- 7:07more powerful connections. Remember, the acronym place P is
- 7:14get present, eliminating, letting go of your own thoughts
- 7:18and concerns and get present so you can stay focused to the L,
- 7:23listening with heart, listening for not only their words, but
- 7:27also their feelings, and calling out the feeling because that'll
- 7:32help defuse their emotion. And then acknowledging it, again,
- 7:38acknowledging their what they're saying, acknowledging their
- 7:41feelings. Then finally, C and E, communicate with empathy,
- 7:46communicate with compassion. And using this tool will help you
- 7:55reduce misunderstandings will help you increase your
- 8:01relationships, increase your connections with people. Most
- 8:05people are feeling quite alone nowadays, quite alone because
- 8:09they don't feel heard. And so when you can use this acronym
- 8:13place, you're going to unleash your voice and lead people into
- 8:20more harmonious outcomes, outcomes that generate a win win
- 8:27outcomes that are productive. And so thank you so much for
- 8:32listening. I appreciate you. Keep exploring, keep moving in
- 8:36flow and in love
