- 0:42Speaker 1: It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Oh all right, that's home the week eight o'clock days.
- 1:06Speaker 5: We talked to Jefflagwold ESPN dot com and uh, nice.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Day to do it is.
- 1:11Speaker 5: The Broncos have cut down to fifty three man roster
- 1:14Speaker 5: and getting ready for a week and a half from
- 1:16Speaker 5: now opening up the season.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Jeff, good to see you, buddy. How you doing.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm good. I noticed you guys. You know, come in
- 1:24Speaker 3: with a little rock and roll band from my era.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I guess I was just gonna ask you. I have
- 1:29Speaker 2: never in my life asked you if you liked music
- 1:34Speaker 2: or what kind of music you like? But clearly a
- 1:36Speaker 2: little Boston coming back, You're uh got you.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Going a little bit not, you know, most I liked everything.
- 1:43Speaker 3: My playlist is nutty because you know, kids will do
- 1:46Speaker 3: that for you. They enlightened me with all kinds of
- 1:50Speaker 3: cool stuff. But yeah, no, I love it all.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Leggy.
- 1:53Speaker 5: With this cutdown to fifty three, uh, the fifty three
- 1:56Speaker 5: man roster, what was the biggest surprise to you.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Well, that you know, I believed that they believed the
- 2:05Speaker 3: words that this would be a young team. But it's
- 2:08Speaker 3: been a while since, especially you know at the twos
- 2:12Speaker 3: and the threes on the depth chart, it's been a
- 2:15Speaker 3: while since we've seen a team, you know, sort of
- 2:17Speaker 3: this young. They kept all the draft picks except one
- 2:21Speaker 3: multiple undrafted. Uh. You know, if you go two years,
- 2:26Speaker 3: two seasons or less. I think there are twenty three
- 2:30Speaker 3: players on this team with two seasons or less experienced.
- 2:33Speaker 3: So part of that is their own doing. You know.
- 2:37Speaker 3: The Russell Wilson decision took the cap you know, down
- 2:42Speaker 3: to historical tightness and I think we're seeing the result
- 2:45Speaker 3: of that. But I do think they would have gotten younger,
- 2:50Speaker 3: you know, whether or not they had the cap troubles
- 2:52Speaker 3: or not. But but they are they are indeed very young,
- 2:55Speaker 3: especially in the backup hole.
- 3:00Speaker 6: We were all, I guess surprised by Tim Patrick, especially
- 3:03Speaker 6: after the game he had against Green Bay, and they
- 3:06Speaker 6: wanted to go young. I get it, But follow me
- 3:09Speaker 6: on this. If they felt he was ready to play,
- 3:12Speaker 6: if the injuries were behind him, and he's a proven commodity,
- 3:16Speaker 6: and the goal this year is to make your young
- 3:18Speaker 6: quarterback develop, make your young quarterback look good. Why not
- 3:22Speaker 6: give your young quarterback that proven commodity.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Well, I think it came down to I think Quinn
- 3:31Speaker 3: Bailey's injury forced them to add another lineman, so that
- 3:37Speaker 3: was a roster spot, and they were afraid they're going
- 3:40Speaker 3: to lose Blake Watson on waivers, so that's a second
- 3:44Speaker 3: roster spot. And they kept a third quarterback, so that
- 3:48Speaker 3: is a third roster spot. On offense, that many of
- 3:52Speaker 3: the scenarios they did even a week ago, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 3: didn't include. And I think in a perfect world they
- 4:01Speaker 3: wanted to keep six receivers. But when you added those
- 4:04Speaker 3: three extra roster spots that they needed, and all three
- 4:10Speaker 3: of them were on offense. I think he got caught
- 4:12Speaker 3: and the squeeze there, especially when he doesn't play special
- 4:16Speaker 3: teams and when you're making when a team's making those
- 4:20Speaker 3: last six or seven decisions, that's always going to go
- 4:24Speaker 3: to the special teams coach who says, you know, I
- 4:28Speaker 3: need this, I need that. And Tim does not play
- 4:31Speaker 3: special teams at this point, you know, after two years
- 4:34Speaker 3: of this time of injury, that's not going to be
- 4:37Speaker 3: on his docket.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But Jeff, when I look at the guys who are
- 4:40Speaker 2: on the practice squad and again little Jordan Humphrey seems
- 4:43Speaker 2: to be going, you know, along the same route he
- 4:45Speaker 2: did last year. But how does it work on a
- 4:48Speaker 2: weekly basis where he could be on the active roster
- 4:52Speaker 2: and play on any given day then go back down.
- 4:55Speaker 2: How does all this kind of thing work? Because I
- 4:57Speaker 2: would assume that he and maybe even a guy like Burton,
- 5:00Speaker 2: depending on the opponent, might be able to do that,
- 5:03Speaker 2: But I don't know the mechanism.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, most it's two two per game can come up
- 5:09Speaker 3: from the practice squad, you know, so depending on what
- 5:12Speaker 3: their injury situation looks like, or you know, but last
- 5:16Speaker 3: year Humphrey was on the practice squad and played in
- 5:18Speaker 3: every game, So it tells you you know their intentions there,
- 5:21Speaker 3: and I think Burton and Humphrey balls. I think the
- 5:25Speaker 3: agreement was when Sean Payton sat down with him, is
- 5:28Speaker 3: just hang in there, be patient, and we're going to
- 5:31Speaker 3: bring you back and you'll have a chance to be
- 5:33Speaker 3: elevated and make your usual game check because you're on
- 5:39Speaker 3: the game day roster. But you can elevate two a week.
- 5:43Speaker 3: That does not include the third quarterback, who can be
- 5:45Speaker 3: in uniform and go in the game if the first
- 5:48Speaker 3: two are injured.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Legging the fifty three guys in the roster right now?
- 5:53Speaker 5: Will those be the same fifty three when the season
- 5:55Speaker 5: kicks off next Sunday.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think every week you're gonna be
- 6:01Speaker 3: able to ask that question because he this head coach,
- 6:04Speaker 3: has made no secret uh he likes the waiver wire
- 6:08Speaker 3: if he thinks there's a better guy out there. So
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think they're always going to be looking and be fluid.
- 6:14Speaker 3: But I think they've made the decisions they want to
- 6:18Speaker 3: make so far, unless you know they've gotten a medical
- 6:20Speaker 3: report on somebody who's getting treatment that they think needs
- 6:24Speaker 3: a few more weeks.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Leggy, I've asked you this before, and we brought this
- 6:30Speaker 6: up on the show yesterday. No one had the answer.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Can you please explain to me again why on game
- 6:35Speaker 6: days the NFL only allows forty six players to play
- 6:39Speaker 6: when there are all those inactives.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Why don't they just.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's the dumbest thing ever. It's always been the dumbest
- 6:48Speaker 3: thing I think. I think it's the cruelest thing in history.
- 6:52Speaker 3: They do it for the super Bowl. Like you get
- 6:55Speaker 3: all the way to the Super Bowl and somebody tells
- 6:58Speaker 3: you you're inactive. You can't even wear the super Bowl
- 7:02Speaker 3: uniform that day. It's just stupid. It's always been. When
- 7:07Speaker 3: the competition committee starts to talk about it, there's always
- 7:12Speaker 3: a coach or two that just thinks that's so unfair.
- 7:16Speaker 3: If one team has fifty two healthy players and he's
- 7:20Speaker 3: only got forty seven healthy players, and it's a rather
- 7:27Speaker 3: arbitrary number. They didn't do the analytics back then and
- 7:30Speaker 3: figure out that the average number of healthy players every
- 7:34Speaker 3: week is forty five or forty six. They get none
- 7:37Speaker 3: of that, so that number isn't even based on anything.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yet they still cling to it. But I do think
- 7:44Speaker 3: there's a lot more momentum now, especially with the practice
- 7:49Speaker 3: squads finally where they should have been twenty years ago.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Finally they you know, I think there's some momentum to
- 7:57Speaker 3: finally just say, you know, no game day and active.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Every healthy player in uniform can play if he wants
- 8:04Speaker 3: to or can. And but it is dumb. It's always
- 8:07Speaker 3: been dumb, and even the league doesn't have a good
- 8:09Speaker 3: answer for it.
- 8:11Speaker 6: In fact, I'm going to recommend on our morning show
- 8:13Speaker 6: there's three of us every morning, one of us is
- 8:16Speaker 6: going to be an.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Active Yes, yes, that would be good. I think they
- 8:22Speaker 3: would call that a rotation. At some point.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Well, depending depending it's usually Moser.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Mosure's inactive most of the week.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Depending on the segment, it's Vic.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Well, Leggy, I'll tell you this.
- 8:35Speaker 3: If I've been with Vic, when he suddenly looks down
- 8:38Speaker 3: at his phone or something, and that's it, game over, Leggy.
- 8:42Speaker 5: If Vic gets a mean text, he's inactive for about
- 8:46Speaker 5: two segments afterwards.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Inactive, we do, Vic, what are you doing? I'm fighting
- 8:50Speaker 2: with somebody. I'll get back to you in a minute.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Vic enough to do television with me and Vic and
- 8:57Speaker 3: their television on like one tenth of a second notice,
- 9:00Speaker 3: so sometimes I didn't even know we were on the air,
- 9:02Speaker 3: and we were on the air.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Leggy, can you can I ask you to psycho analyze
- 9:07Speaker 5: my brain for a second and let me know this.
- 9:11Speaker 4: I don't think I don't want to Well, too bad,
- 9:14Speaker 4: Too bad, you're taking a deep dive.
- 9:17Speaker 5: I'm having this this sort of inner battle because when
- 9:21Speaker 5: training camp started, I thought it was totally plausible that
- 9:24Speaker 5: the Broncos could have been one of the teams picking
- 9:26Speaker 5: in like the top five in next year's draft.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And then camp went on.
- 9:30Speaker 5: And I was like, you know what they got maybe
- 9:32Speaker 5: not blue chip elite players, but solid players at a
- 9:35Speaker 5: lot of these positions. And now I'm in the place
- 9:38Speaker 5: of they're in a playoff team, nothing like that, but
- 9:41Speaker 5: better than I thought at the beginning of camp. Is
- 9:43Speaker 5: that training camp brain taking over and you just watch
- 9:45Speaker 5: them every day so you start to like things more?
- 9:47Speaker 4: Or is that real?
- 9:48Speaker 5: Do you feel the same way?
- 9:50Speaker 3: No, it's it's I just was talking to somebody, a
- 9:56Speaker 3: younger writer in another city covering a team who asked
- 10:00Speaker 3: me the same question, and I said, there are two
- 10:03Speaker 3: in my time doing this, there are two prime moments
- 10:07Speaker 3: of optimism around an NFL team, and that that's right
- 10:12Speaker 3: after the draft and in the it used to be
- 10:16Speaker 3: one week, but in the one or two weeks between
- 10:19Speaker 3: the end of the preseason and the start of the
- 10:21Speaker 3: regular season, those are the two highest points of optimism
- 10:26Speaker 3: around any NFL team I've ever covered. And then teams
- 10:29Speaker 3: play the opener and you know, you know, stuff happens.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Half of them lose, you know, basically, and you know,
- 10:37Speaker 3: but so it begins. But this is this has always
- 10:40Speaker 3: been sort of an optimistic, optimistic moment around NFL teams,
- 10:45Speaker 3: and it is around here. You know that it's a
- 10:47Speaker 3: new season of fresh season, but you know it's eventually,
- 10:52Speaker 3: you know, it's like every college football whatever. Eventually the
- 10:55Speaker 3: games get played and and all of the chatter is
- 11:00Speaker 3: you know, goes into the distance. And sometimes because it's
- 11:04Speaker 3: the only team you're looking at, you're kind of doing
- 11:06Speaker 3: it in a vacuum. So as they do better as
- 11:11Speaker 3: camp goes on, because basically they've practiced more, it sort
- 11:16Speaker 3: of does mess with your head a little bit. But
- 11:20Speaker 3: I would say they still have depth is years and
- 11:23Speaker 3: we still don't know really who the finishers are going
- 11:27Speaker 3: to be in the red zone until you see some
- 11:30Speaker 3: of that. And look, you know, bo Nix has done
- 11:34Speaker 3: absolutely everything a rookie quarterback's gotta do to win the job.
- 11:39Speaker 3: But he is going to play like a rookie, and
- 11:41Speaker 3: I think it's really unfair for people to expect him
- 11:44Speaker 3: to not play like a rookie.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Jeff, real quick though, on the quarterbacks, talking to
- 11:49Speaker 2: other people around the league, are your friends your people
- 11:53Speaker 2: surprised they kept three? And what's the thought if they
- 11:56Speaker 2: didn't keep three with Zach Wilson, as you talked about
- 11:58Speaker 2: as an instant claim, would he be gone in someplace else?
- 12:04Speaker 3: I think so much. I don't know that for certain.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I didn't get anybody to tell me, oh, yeah, we'd
- 12:10Speaker 3: claim him, because I think if they were interested, they
- 12:13Speaker 3: were trying to keep it on the down low. But
- 12:16Speaker 3: I think he would have pat. I just looked at
- 12:18Speaker 3: the state of quarterbacking around the league. I mean to
- 12:23Speaker 3: Kobe Brissett, just beat out Drake May and New England.
- 12:26Speaker 3: If you know you're believing in that choice, that I
- 12:30Speaker 3: got to think he would have ended up somewhere else.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And you know, I've told you guys from the start
- 12:36Speaker 3: they like him here that isn't fake or phony. They
- 12:39Speaker 3: really think the talent is there and that they can
- 12:43Speaker 3: fix the rest and they want to see you know,
- 12:46Speaker 3: they look they like everybody else, know what the Jets
- 12:50Speaker 3: think or know how that went, but they've basically decided
- 12:55Speaker 3: and I think it's the right move. You find out
- 12:57Speaker 3: for yourself. You don't take the Jets where for it
- 13:00Speaker 3: that he can't play. You figure it out for yourself.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Well, the ESPN dot Com last thing for you that
- 13:06Speaker 5: you want to let you go. Uh, would you have
- 13:08Speaker 5: a game tonight with a team here locally see you
- 13:10Speaker 5: Buffs taking on NDSU.
- 13:11Speaker 4: What's your outlook for the Buffs this year? What do
- 13:13Speaker 4: you think happens?
- 13:15Speaker 3: Well, I've talked to some scouts who've made the rounds
- 13:17Speaker 3: and uh, I think they have some concerns about the
- 13:20Speaker 3: offensive line, Uh, particularly the right side. I think that's
- 13:26Speaker 3: when you talk to pro personnel guys. And again that's
- 13:28Speaker 3: not a gauge for how good a college team is,
- 13:31Speaker 3: I know, but uh, there's concern that if are they
- 13:34Speaker 3: going to be able to predect the quarterback any better
- 13:36Speaker 3: than they did last year? And you know, our team's
- 13:40Speaker 3: just gonna overload that side of the formation just to
- 13:43Speaker 3: take advantage and you know that the turnover is so
- 13:47Speaker 3: great up there with the with the portal, you know,
- 13:50Speaker 3: more than even most schools. I think there really is
- 13:53Speaker 3: some uncertainty about, you know, what is their talent level
- 13:58Speaker 3: beyond the marquee guys.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Jeff Lagwel ESPN dot com joins us every single Thursday.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Thank you, leg you appreciate it.
