- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, thanks for joining me for today's episode of the Daily Rider Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is part of a series that we're doing on the Rider's Path, Seven Steps to Building a Writing Business.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And if you're just not joining us for this series, I encourage you to go back to the beginning of this series on June 27th with that episode in order to get the most value from this series.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You don't have to, but you're going to get more value out of all this if you listen to the series from the beginning.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: So far, I've given you a quick intro to the writer's path, why it's important, and I've also shared a bit of my story of traveling this path myself.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And over the next couple of weeks, you're going to learn more detail about each of these seven milestones.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I'll explain what each of these are and also share the biggest challenge that you'll face as you try to achieve each one.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: In addition, I'll also give you some examples of people who have built a writing business using this pathway.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So let's start with milestone number one.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: This is the very first thing you need to do, and that is clarify a powerful message for a specific audience.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Now let me explain why this is critical and why it's number one on this list.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: In order to have a strong business, you've got to have a specific point of view on the world.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You need a clear message that is the basis for everything else that you do.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Every business does this.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: They have a mission of some kind.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: They have a specific thing they're trying to do in the world.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: No business tries to do everything.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter how big the business is.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Even Amazon doesn't try to do everything.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Amazon doesn't sell everything.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: They have a pretty clear focus, as does every single company in the world that is successful on any level.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Remember, you are not for everybody.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: You should have one main thing that you have to say, or one main thing that you do for each business that you have.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And when you have a bunch of conflicting messages, people get confused and they start to tune out.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So think for a second of Apple products.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Now, it's no secret that I'm a big fan of Apple products.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I have a MacBook, I've had iPhones for many years, I have AirPods.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've got almost every conceivable thing that they have created.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Not everything, but I have a lot of Apple products, iPads, you know, you name it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So I'm a big fan of Apple products, and if you think of their core value or their core message, you might say, what is it?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Basically, it's this.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Apple builds superior products for an audience who appreciates integration between their products and also great aesthetic design.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And Apple has consistently followed that overarching mission for many years.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Now, whether or not you like Apple is beside the point, but they've done a pretty good job following that core message or that core thing they're trying to accomplish.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And you and I need to do the same thing as well.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: It's important for you to have one single clear message that you're sharing in your writing.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Now, let me give you one example.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: For the Daily Writer Club, which is my membership group, here is what I'm trying to accomplish with that.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: The Daily Writer Club is a supportive and engaged membership community that helps you clarify a powerful message, write books and content to serve your readers, grow your network and online platform, earn an income from your writing and services, and develop habits for wellness and success.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: That is what I'm trying to do in the Daily Writer Club, and really that's what I'm trying to do with my Daily Writer brand as a whole.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: This is what this podcast is all about, is what I just said.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And that's that's what the community is about too, although we have different ways to accomplish that in the community because it's a paid group and there's more engagement there and whatnot.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But that's just one example of what a core message is.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Now, in addition to a core message, you need to be specific on the audience that you're serving.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Again, remember, you're not for everybody.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: So don't try to write and create content for everybody.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Choose one type of person with a specific set of needs or interests.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: For example, my specific audience is writers who want to build a business with their writing, but they're looking for community and resources to do that.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't be listening to this podcast right now at this very moment if you were not looking for some type of resources or accountability or information on how to build a writing business or how to be more successful as a writer.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's why you're here.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So here's the big challenge in choosing one overall message in one specific audience.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: You're going to be tempted to expand and try to reach everybody.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: So you've got to be disciplined and focused in your message and in your audience.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: So I encourage you to do a deep dive into the needs, the desires, the problems, and the frustrations of that audience, and then to create material specifically for them.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question What is your core message and who is your specific audience?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I want to challenge you to spend some time on that question because when you do, things get a things get a lot easier whenever you have a clear message and you have a clear audience that you're writing for.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I will see you tomorrow.
