Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Lisa, more evidence. The robots are taking over. They're getting
- 0:04Speaker 1: smarter and smarter and smarter.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They're coming for your job.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 0:10Speaker 4: Soon as they finish doing this. I mean, really, come on.
- 0:14Speaker 4: What is that saying about with great power comes great responsibility?
- 0:18Speaker 1: But you have to, this is about problem solving. If
- 0:21Speaker 1: we want them to solve our problems, then what do
- 0:23Speaker 1: you do? You throw them a Rubik's Cube.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Yes, this is what we're getting at. A quartet of
- 0:28Speaker 4: New Zealand engineering students, I probably got a grant for this.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Created a robot that solved a Rubik's Cube in a
- 0:34Speaker 4: record-breaking time of 9.8 seconds.
- 0:37Speaker 1: 9.8.
- 0:38Speaker 4: That kid that did it standing on his head or.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Something did it quicker than that. But see, now this
- 0:41Speaker 1: is the thing. This is the thing. This one solved
- 0:44Speaker 1: a 4x4x4 cube. What does that even mean? Well, actually,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I typed it into AI and even AI took a while.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It said, hang on, hang on. I'm just trying to
- 0:53Speaker 1: work this out. It's the process of completely aligning and
- 0:57Speaker 1: solving a 4x4x4 Rubik's Cube, historically known as Rubik's Revenge.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Rubik's Revenge.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So it's the really, really hard one.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm still not impressed. No, but they cut it down
- 1:11Speaker 1: because they saw a video of a robot solving... No,
- 1:15Speaker 1: it's not. I disagree.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I do?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Anyway, they had a robot. It solved it in 45 seconds.
- 1:21Speaker 1: These guys have done it in 9.8.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That's a.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That's one giant leap for mankind.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Who cares if the Rubik's Cube is solved or unsolved?
- 1:30Speaker 3: I mean, let's get real. If you're going to have
- 1:32Speaker 3: a robot, it should be doing the ironing. It should
- 1:34Speaker 3: be cleaning the bathroom. Not bloody solving a Rubik's Cube.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yes, but it's all part of the process. It's all
- 1:42Speaker 1: part of the process. It's problem solving. It's... It's working out.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It's experimenting.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Next, it's going to make a Lego Millennium Falcon. I
- 1:53Speaker 4: don't need that either.
- 1:54Speaker 1: No, but I would like one that can pick it
- 1:56Speaker 1: up off the floor and put it back in the box,
- 1:58Speaker 1: all colour coordinated, so that I don't have to bloody
- 2:00Speaker 1: do it. And it doesn't end up in my heel.
- 2:04Speaker 4: If it's not cooking my dinner.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Of my foot, not my shoe.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Stacking the dishwasher.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But all these things, it all comes.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but no one gets interested in a story about a, well, actually,
- 2:14Speaker 2: then again, maybe they would, a robot that stacks a
- 2:16Speaker 2: dishwasher without breaking any plates in 9.8 seconds.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 1: That's better than any human can do it.
- 2:21Speaker 4: And puts the knives and forks the right way.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Potential end down.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Anyway, the robot has four cameras, looks at the cube,
- 2:27Speaker 1: sees where all the colours are, and then it feeds
- 2:30Speaker 1: it all into an open source algorithm and works out
- 2:32Speaker 1: the moves needed to solve it in less intensive.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Well, to me, that is just a mammoth waste of
- 2:38Speaker 4: time and robotic skills.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a Luddite. We
- 2:45Speaker 1: have a Luddite in our presence. No, I'm not a Luddite. Well,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you're certainly sounding like one. I just think. I say
- 2:54Speaker 1: you've got to give them, and it's an entertaining problem
- 2:59Speaker 1: to solve for us all to observe. And then we go, gee,
- 3:01Speaker 1: they're good. They're smart. And now we'll move them on
- 3:04Speaker 1: to other things like the ironing, the picking up the legos.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Stacking the dishwasher. Now that we've got that cube out
- 3:11Speaker 1: of the way. Yes. Right. Hang on.
- 3:14Speaker 4: How much money did we waste on getting the robot
- 3:17Speaker 4: to solve.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The Rubik's Cube? Four by four by four by four, whatever.
- 3:22Speaker 1: That's for the New Zealand taxpayer to worry about, not us.
- 3:26Speaker 1: We didn't do it. I mean, I tried to, but
- 3:29Speaker 1: my robot is still working on it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Does not compute.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Does not compute.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Does not compute. See?
- 3:36Speaker 4: That's the bubbling booby. That's my kind of robot.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You ninny.
