The Dave Island Show comes to you from the Parmar Store studio. If
1:18
there's not a Parmar store near you now, there will be soon this summer
1:21
only your local Parmar stores presenting free frazele Friday. Now, what is frazzle
1:26
you're asking? Well, Frozel is kind of a kind of a frozen type
1:30
drink. They're delicious, available in all kinds of different flavors, including tiger
1:34
blood. It's my personal favorite. You can stop by your local participating part

Let's welcome in Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charles remain association with this week's
3:10
Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah, good morning, welcome to
3:14
the show. Good morning, how are you? I am doing fine?
3:17
Tell us about our pet this week now, as always, let me say
3:22
this our pet of the week. It's a lovely young lady named Rhodes.
3:27
Rhodes and Rhoades pictures posted as always Dave Alan Radio on Facebook and the Dave
3:32
Allen Show on x The artist formerly known as Twitter tell us all about Rhodes.
3:38
All right, Well, she is a very pretty and very sweet girl.
3:44
She is saved already, so she's ready to go home. Is micro
3:49
chips and up to day on her vaccines. She's around one year old and
3:54
I always tell everybody we go by their gums and their cheeks, so it's
3:59
a round the age, but they're pretty accurate typically, so she is around
4:04
one year. She does prefer calmer dogs because she is pretty shot at first.
4:10
She does take a little bit to warm up to you. Now she
4:15
has been in a home before, but she just escapes yards a little bit
4:20
easier because she is more scared. She is more aware of her surroundings,
4:26
so she's kind of wanting to bolt in situations that she gets scared of,
4:30
so like if there's a lot of loud noises or something. She just is
4:34
an escape artist. So we say, but she is because I would say
4:41
she's a shackgirl. I think when she gets used to being in a home
4:45
in a yard that is more of a secure yard for her, with a
4:47
good sense or even just supervision out there with her, I think that she
4:53
would get used to it. And it takes dogs like three weeks to kind
4:57
of open up a little bit three months to folly home. So always always,
5:01
always just be with her just for her safety and everybody else's just to
5:05
make sure that she doesn't escape, just so that way she can get used
5:12
to everything for a while. But she is a social butterfly. Other than
5:15
that, she definitely loves people. She loves attention. She would be best
5:18
in a home that doesn't have younger kids, maybe kids that are like like
5:26
older teenagers and up, just because she is so shot at first, it
5:30
takes her a while to kind of get used to everything. So she needs
5:32
a little bit more tender love and care versus more playfulness at first. She
5:42
is she's really really sweet. She's really really good. She's good on the
5:45
leash. She does pool a little bit, but you know, that's just
5:48
I think that that just stems from her being scared. I think once she
5:51
gets used to you, once she gets used to being in a home,
5:55
when she feels a little bit more safe with you, that she'll definitely be
5:58
able to work a little bit better on the leash. But she's she's not
6:02
hard on the leash or anything. She just tuggs a little bit here and
6:04
there. But she is a good girl. She's around thirty seven pounds,
6:10
I believe thirty six point something, right under thirty seven, So she definitely
6:15
could use some love and some attention, and she would be a great,
6:19
great, great dog for somebody who maybe wants to go on walks daily or
6:26
spend some time in the house. I think she's more of like a couch
6:30
potato type dog. Maybe likes to have a few toys, but she's not
6:32
super super playful. I don't think she does prefer comrade dogs. So she's
6:38
definitely not one at first that wants to really be super open and playful.
6:44
But like I said, she warms up and she gets us fia and she's
6:47
very sweet. Well, in these things you're talking about, you talked about,
6:50
Hannah, how she does kind of have a tendency to pull on the
6:54
leash a little bit, and how she's a bit of an escape artist.
6:56
This is not because either one from what you're telling me, because she's a
7:00
bad dog. It's just that she's just a little little nervous and that's why
7:03
that they try to do these things. And I will say, as I
7:05
always say, when it comes to dogs that tend to be escape artists,
7:10
you know, make sure that you are prepared for that. Make sure that
7:13
you have a dog, a yard or whatever, an the fence. If
7:16
you're like, if the dog's life is going to be chaining it up,
7:18
though, don't take the dog. Do not take the dog. That's the
7:23
editorial comment from me. Okay, and I'll leave it at that, But
7:27
these things I think could all be worked with. Let's talk about some other
7:30
things that are going on at the shelter, And of course the big story
7:34
that everybody's talking about now is the weather and the heat. And you don't
7:38
need to be Spencer Adkins handed to know that it's hot. This heat is
7:42
dangerous for all of us, but especially for our pets. Not just because
7:46
they need hydrated, that's an obvious but sometimes with the bottoms of their feet
7:49
too. They're not designed to spend a lot of time on hot concrete.
7:55
They don't have shoes correct, Yes, So I always tell everybody some of
8:01
the top things that you want to look out for is if it's too hot
8:03
for your bear feet or your bear hands, it's more than likely way too
8:07
hot for their pall pads. They do burn and it can get to the
8:13
point to where it's so severe that they need to go to the vet.
8:15
So definitely don't walk them during like the really hot part of the day,
8:20
maybe earlier in the morning, later in the evening. Just make sure you're
8:24
touching the pavement, making sure it's not too hot for yourself. Shade and
8:30
water is always a good place. But I always tell everybody that shade moves
8:33
with the sun, so you also need to move with the sun or go
8:37
inside after a short period of time, just so that way they're not overheating.
8:41
And if you put if you've got a box for them, unless the
8:43
box has got you know, a carrier air conditioning unit in it, that's
8:46
probably not a good idea because basically those boxes become like little microwaves for dogs.
8:52
I saw and I saw that posted by somebody on social media. You
8:56
may think you're doing a good thing by having a doghouse for the dog,
8:58
but you just added about forty degrees onto the dog's temperature if it gets in
9:01
there. Yes, yes, those like a glue houses and stuff like that,
9:05
they're great for housing them. However, in the heat, it's probably
9:11
best to just make sure that they are not hanging out in those all day
9:15
long, because they can actually get really overheated, just like it would be
9:18
in a car if you have all the windows up, and sometimes even if
9:22
you have the windows down, it can still become way too hot for animals.
9:26
But a valance showing five eny live right to you apart by fresh air.

9:46
there hand, it looks like you got a whole lot of cats this week.
9:50
Yes, we definitely have a lot of cats right now. I think
9:54
that we are in need of some period of hit and chowel. I know
9:58
that we were a couple of days ago. I'm sure we still are,
10:03
but we definitely could use that for a donation. If anybody has extra kitten
10:09
child that they haven't used and they're not going to and they want to bring
10:11
up, or maybe if they want to donate online or any particular way that
10:16
you want to donate, we would welcome it. We definitely are in need
10:20
of it. You guys out of about anywhere this weekend. Hopefully if you
10:24
are, you're staying cool, because I know there's so many activities going on.
10:26
You guys are gonna be out somewhere this weekend. No, I don't
10:30
think we're going to be out anywhere this weekend. Probably best, Probably best
10:33
unless you know, unless you're just doing education and not actually taking the pets
10:37
out. It's probably not a good time to take the pets out, right,
10:39
Yes, right, and yeah it's definitely hot out right now. We
10:43
got to put the animals needs first. But it's definitely something that we're doing.
10:48
I believe maybe next week. Okay, we'll talk about that then.
10:50
Hey, Hannah, as always, I appreciate you being here. We'll talk
10:52

11:41
get roads for free now. She has a bit of an escape artist,
11:45
as Hannah tells us, so she does need to be in a fenced in
11:48
yard mainly because she's just so shy. It pulls a little bit on the
11:52
leash. But that can all be worked with if if you get her the
11:54
right home. Probably would do better in a home with older kids, simply
11:58
because of the shyest thing. Sometimes younger kids don't understand why they can't hug
12:01
the doggie, you know, and problems ensue. So beautiful dog, though
12:07
around thirty seven pounds came into astrail, would make a great pet for your

15:43
worked with them every year at Kana County and then I work with them statewide.
15:48
I've been affiliated with Special Olympics since early eighties. I love them,
15:52
don't you love them? Gotta love them. Here we are Dave Season twenty,
15:56

16:00
And summer actually just started yesterdayday. Yeah, it's like five o'clock yesterday or
16:03
something. But it's been awesome. It looks for it looks like it's going
16:07
to be another spectacular epic evening in the making. Tonight Moses Outer Group Live
16:12
and Levy brought you by the City of Charleston Tonight at six thirty we have
16:17
They've been on the stage down every four the show and Bomb Stage, the
16:19
kind Thieves. They're funky, they play some classic rock, they play some
16:25
bluegrass. They love the jam. They're very entertaining, they're very Appalachian and
16:30
thee they'll get the audience revved up for what has become a pretty much a
16:33
favorite each and every summer. Now down at Live on Levy. When John
16:37
Ingram pays a tribute to a band, and he's done the Who, He's
16:41
done Prince, he's done, David Bowie, He's done others and others and
16:45
others. He did Tom Petty one year. Yeah, this year is the
16:48
talking Heads, the quintessential punk rock band from the eighties. So they're going
16:53
to be He's assembled about sixteen to twenty different musicians from all over the state
16:57
of West Virginia. Course they'll do some of your favorites, take me to

17:04
talking Heads all the time. Tonight from seven forty five until nine thirty.
17:08
He'll do They'll do two forty five minute sets, will stop at nine thirty.
17:14

you might want to mix in one of those and mix in a water like
17:52

17:56
more than myself, but I will say that. And a night like tonight
18:00
now they're having a Colbert. You need to have some water and make it
18:03
makes sense. I ain't gonna cut it. Mix in some water folks should
18:06
be a nice evening. It might be a great night to be on the
18:08

18:11
want to give them a call. My favorite people or my people with my

18:22
brought to you by the City of Charleston. Of course we do this.
18:25
It's live and Levy's great fun for that great cause. And I always love
18:27
to talk about that because I love the charities that we help, and they
18:30
are five Inner City Charities of Charleston, and we help RCCR, the Covenant
18:34
House, the YWCA, Sojourner Shelter, KB Collective, Canall Valley Collective and
18:41
man O Meal and all those charities have something to do with maybe helping people
18:45
with a bite to eat and a place to sleep at night. We've raised
18:48
one hundred and twenty two thousand dollars the last nineteen plus seasons on these fifty
18:52
to fifty tickets that we sell. I don't know who the charity will be
18:56
tonight, but they'll be volunteers there selling fifty to fifty tickets. We will
19:00
do a drawing about eight forty. Last week, Annette, I want to
19:03
give a shout out to Annette. She won the pot. She donated it
19:07
back to the causes. You don't have to do that, but Annette,
19:08
bless your heart for doing that. That helps the charities and it helps us
19:12
with our mission to provide a purpose for these charities. So it's been a
19:18
great year. Looks like a great night tonight. Come down, Dave.
19:22
I know you enjoy this as much as I do. John has been rehearsing
19:26
this with his crew for months and months and months, so tonight should be
19:30
an epic and special night as ill and I think it says something Jim about
19:33
the musical prowess of one John Ingram to be able to do Wow, the
19:37
Prince thing, and to be able to do the Tom Petty thing. And
19:38
now he's coming around doing the talking Heads. And we had John schedule to
19:42
be here, but he have a little schedule. The confidence couldn't be here
19:45
this morning, man, But I would have. One of the questions I
19:47
was gonna ask him is how the world did he come up with the talking
19:48
heads? Because talking heads is you know, as you said a little bit
19:53
of punk. They're a little bit of art rock, little prog rock as
19:56
we used to call it back in the day. And they do a variety
19:59
of different songs. I mean, people know, burning down the House,
20:02
their version of take Me to the River, which is now green song,
20:04
right, and uh and and road to Nowhere and all these different So it's
20:07
it's a it's a wide range of music. I'd love to ask him the
20:11
same question. I can't wait to ask him when I see him. But
20:14
I was in college in the early eighties, late seventies, early eighties and
20:17
MTV was just coming. That was it. That was the beginning of MTV,
20:21
And it would be on in the dorm studio or the dorm lobby and
20:25
we were watching that stuff and here come these talking heads and we just thought
20:27
it was for that time, not now, but for that time, it
20:32
was off the wall. Who are these people? What are they doing?
20:36
How? Why are they standing on their head? Why are they singing standing
20:38
on their head? What kind of lyric is that? We were? You
20:41
know, that was forty years ago or like what in the that's back when
20:44
that's when that's when MTV actually played music videos. That shows you watched.
20:48
Yeah, we actually watched it. They don't do that anyway. We sat
20:49
around that lobby and just watch them for hours upon hours. But it was
20:53
fun so that if you, if you remember the Talking Heads, this will
20:56
bring back a lot of wonderful memories for you. And John does a great
21:00
job again. They rehearse, he gets he assembles an amazing lineup of musicians.

22:45
something to donate that they could really really use right now, they can put
22:48

23:10
Taco Fest going on. It started yesterday at Oaksfield in South Charleston, so
23:15
that's going on through the weekend. Plus a lot of Jazz Festival and music
23:18
they throw music in there too, is back tomorrow on the grounds University of
23:22
Charleston. Sarah Right is with the Fund for the Arts and she joins us
23:25
now via the Big Lee Pigley Wigglely hotline. Sarah, good morning and welcome
23:29
to the show. Hey Dave, how are you I'm doing for having me
23:32
on? I am I am doing fine. Thank you for being here.
23:34
Tell us about this big event tomorrow. Yeah, So, as you said,
23:38
it's taking place tomorrow from three to ten pm on the lawn at the
23:41
University of Charleston. And the Wine and Jazz Music Festival is a Charleston staple.
23:45
This is the twenty fifth anniversary of the event, and we have an
23:49
awesome day plan for everyone. So what are people going to do other than
23:52
try to stay cool when they're out there. Well, we have some amazing
23:57
artists lined up, varying from local artists and Natalie renowned artists, So we
24:02
have top tier musicians going to be present, and then we have some amazing
24:07
food and drink beggars and there's something for everyone there. Whether you like wine,
24:12
craft, beer, food, We've got it all. And this is
24:18
the twenty fifty year. I know you haven't. I mean, I don't
24:21
think you've been a part of all twenty five of them. But here the
24:22
idea how those things started. Somebody just said let's have some music and have
24:26
some wine and have fun or what. Well, you know, so the
24:30
Wine and Jazz Music Festival is actually a fundraiser. Yeah, and I want
24:33
to talk about that too, so go ahead. Yeah, So, I
24:36
mean, and that's how it started. The Wine and Jazz Music Festival is
24:40
Fun for the Arts of largest fundraiser, and you know, the money that
24:45
we raised from this goes directly back towards the eleven local art groups that we
24:51
support. And these art groups range in discipline from dance to music, and
24:56
they affect people from all demographics. So really, by this event, you're
25:00
investing and ricking Charleston. It's a wonderful return and fun for the arts.
25:07
Give me a little a little background on fund for the arts because this is
25:11
not the only event you do. Give me some background on that, right,
25:15
Yeah. So we hold two large fundraisers. Wine and Jazz Music Festival
25:19
is our largest, and we have another one in the fall called the Capital
25:23
Cocktail Classics. And so through those events, it helps us achieve our sole
25:27
focus, which is raising money for local art groups. That's why we exist.
25:33
And you know, many of these art groups don't have the ability to
25:37
fundraise and put on large scale events to raise money. That's where we step
25:41
them, so we raise money for them that allows them to focus on putting
25:45
out really good content for the Charleston Valley. Well, it's certainly as I
25:49
said, it's been going on for twenty five years, so you must be
25:52
doing something right. I know people look forward to this. I've attended and
25:55
passed myself. It's a fantastic event. Give us all the details, the
25:59
time, the hours and so on and so forth for tomorrow. Yeah.
26:02
Absolutely. So you can buy tickets online up until nine o'clock tonight and you
26:07
can find tickets on our Facebook page Fund for the Arts West Virginia. And
26:11
if you miss out on purchasing tickets online, no worries, you can purchase
26:15
tickets at the gates. And as I said, it's from three to ten
26:19
pm tomorrow at the University of Charleston. It's going to be a great day,
26:23
it always is. Sarah. You folks do wonderful work there with the
26:26
Fun for the Arts. Thank you for joining us and good luck with everything
26:29
tomorrow and stay is I've been saying to everybody, stay cool today. Thanks
26:33

30:40
We're gonna wait for Senator Joe Manchin to give us a call. So yesterday
30:42
on the show, I had our good friend Rusty Web, attorney Rusty Web
30:45
schedule to be on the show yesterday, and Rusty wanted. He was in
30:51
Normandy a couple of weeks ago for the commemoration, and I thought it'd be
30:55
interesting maybe reach out to him and have him to come on the show to
30:56
talk about it. Didn't hear from Rusty at all yesterday, which is not
31:00
very Rusty like. I didn't hear from him, didn't know what was going
31:04
on. I walked out in the green room during the break. No Rusty
31:07
Web, I'm trying to call him. He goes straight to voicemail. Coop
31:11
was doing some things down here and he was trying to call him. Couldn't
31:14
get ahold of him. Didn't hear from me so long? And behold last
31:15
night and I'm scrolling through the book of Face and I find that poor Rusty
31:22
dropped his phone in the water while fishing, and his daughter had did the
31:26
done this post on Facebook saying, hey, Dad's going to get back to
31:30
everybody's said as he can. So Rusty, if you're listening to the show,
31:33
we'll try to get your rescheduled at a later time. Poor poor Rusty
31:37
dropped his phone while fishing. I mean, look, if you're gonna lose
31:41
your phone, fishing might very well be the way to do it. There's
31:45
worse ways that you could. You could you know, you could lose your

Let's welcome into the show. US Senator Joe Man. Good morning, sir,
32:00
Hey, good morning, Dave. Are you I'm doing fine? Thank
32:02
you for being here. Hope you're staying staying cool wherever you are, sir.
32:07
Well, I'm back in Charleston now, but Dave, so sorry.
32:09
Yesterday I was just a really bad self service coming over the mountains, so
32:14
I was in bad shat well, you're here's the thing. You know,
32:15
your folks sent me an email. You're a US senator. I mean,
32:19
things happen. You know. It's okay you get a pass. No,
32:22
no, we need to plan better than that. But I I just couldn't
32:24
get a good signal. I didn't want to mess it up. So it's
32:27
all good. Thank you for allowing me to come today. At least you
32:30
didn't drop. I had Rusty web on before you yesterday. Rusty No showed
32:34
because he dropped his He dropped his phone in the river while fishing. That
32:37
was his excuse, So you know he had probably had more fun than you
32:42
did. All right, this is the first time I've had you on the
32:43
show, I think since you made the switch from Democrat to independent. Still
32:47
feeling good about it, sir, Yeah, I do. I've been well.
32:51
I've always been independent, Dave. I never let the party guide me
32:52
in any direction that I didn't think was good for my state, of the
32:55
constituents of our state. So now all of a sudden, the parties want
33:01
you. They've weaponized the political process, and they want you to pick a
33:05
side. And I said, I don't e belong on one side, the
33:07
American side, and I worked for my entire constituency of West Virginian's Democrat,
33:14
Republicans, Independence, and everything in between. I said, so, you
33:16
can't tell me that it's because the Democrat you have a debut your name is
33:20
supposed to do this, or if you have an R by, your name's
33:22
supposed to cater to this side. So I just said enough was enough,
33:27
and I just went ahead and changed because I felt that's where I've been all
33:30
my life and I wanted to do it before I left the Senate. And
33:32
the day you made the announcement, we heard from all the political types,
33:36
selected officials, and of course talking heads like me. But what have you
33:38
heard from the people about your announcements, sir. Not. I think people
33:43
were pleased nothing has changed. I think they've never looked at me as a
33:46
hyper partisan type person, so it hasn't It's not a surprise, it's not
33:51
something that they didn't expect, and it's not something that I have changed in
33:54
how I'm going to be representing them for the next five months in the US
33:58
Senate. So I haven't had any pushback whatsoever or feedback from that that would
34:04
be derogatory. They're just happy that I feel much more relieved now. I
34:08
could speak more freely, but I think I've always done that, so Dave,
34:13
not a whole lot has changed, except that makes me able to speak
34:16
to both sides without You know, right now, if you're have an R
34:20
by your name, the d think you're the enemy. If you have a
34:22
D by your name, the rs are supposed to think you're an enemy.
34:25
Well, if you have an eye by your name, you know, I
34:28
says, I don't hate anybody. I can love both sides, and that
34:30
gives me a chance to work with both sides equally. I got this text
34:34
to the show, and then we'll get into why I really had on the
34:37
show. But I think this bears this bears you hearing this. This was
34:42
a text and to the show that came in right before you came on.
34:44
That says, please ask Senator Mansion. If Democrats really want unity and healing
34:49
and not just submission and conformity, then people like him must tell the media
34:52
and others in Congress to stop calling all Republicans and Trump supporters racist or Nazis.
34:59
That is the problem. We are not seen as individuals anymore. We're
35:01
all lumped into all these different despicable groups, thus to humanizing us, making
35:06
it appear acceptable, even encouraged, to attack, slander, and in some
35:08
cases physically assault us. My question this was from a texture. Would you
35:13
consider condemning this on the Senate floor and publicly and interviews. By the way,
35:16
I've never heard you call anybody a Nazi or anything. I will say
35:20
that I've never heard that guy. Well, Dave, let me just tell
35:22
you this. I absolutely agree with your text or whoever texted that into their
35:25
spot on. But on both sides. I mean right now, if you
35:30
have a d buy your name, we're supposed to be absolutely irresponsible and socialist.
35:35
So if you have a d buy your name is supposed to be a
35:37
socialist, crazy left winger. Well, I can guarantee. I grew up
35:40
with Democrats my entire life, and West Virginia Democrats were never like that.
35:45
We always had a farther liberal side to the point, and there's always been
35:51
a further conservative side to the Republican side. But the bottom line was,
35:55
you know, people want a grand old party to be grand again, and
35:58
it should be. We want the Democratic Party to be responsible and compassionate.
36:02
There's nothing wrong with that. And you know, but you're right our state
36:07
being mostly a red state today, but we were always more I think,
36:12
a more grounded central state. We were always realistic and sensible, I believe.
36:17
And now because the Democratic Party in Washington, which I don't and I've
36:22
always said this from day one, I'm not a Washington Democrat, never have
36:27
been, never would be. And I have a lot of my wonderful friends
36:31
and Republicans and aren't Washington Republicans, and they're upset with the system. So
36:36
the the text end, I will condemn both sides, and I will give
36:39
my farewell speech based around what I identified what people in America identify with people
36:45
in West Virginia have identified as being wrong with the political system. We just
36:50
have different ideas, that's all. We have a different way of governing.
36:52
We want Mountaineers are always free Montani Liberal Cipro sibli Ciberi Cimpurai was always hears
37:00
are always free. And if that's going to be the case, then why
37:02
all of a sudden, now do you put all these restrictions, tell me
37:05
what I can do cars, I have to drive different ways, I have
37:08
to do things. It doesn't make any sense at all, But yet we
37:10
all have a responsibility to the climate. And I've said, you can innovate
37:15
your way to a cleaner climate, you just can't eliminate. They don't want
37:19
us to use certain things that we produce here in West Virginia, coal gas
37:22
and all the different things that's needed to run this country. We're doing it
37:25
better with innovation technology than ever before, and we're investing more in new technologies.
37:32
So we have to be an all of the above approach to this.
37:37
But they're spot on. That's exactly it's been weaponized. Pick a side.
37:42
There's only one side day, the American side. You can pick a philosophical
37:45
position. You can pick an ideology that you might like the Republican side better
37:51
than the Democrat or the Democrat side better. But the bottom line is the
37:53
extremes on both sides don't work. But that's all you get today because they
37:58
force you there. They call you a socialist, or they call you a
38:01
neo Nazi or an anti democracy, and this and that. We all have
38:05
a different view and you can't fix it unless I can sit down and talk
38:09
with both sides as an independent day You're I'm going to look at me like
38:14
roseclul or Glass Owl. He's really a D or he's really an R and
38:16
he's just saying this to be saying it. No, I'm really an I
38:20
I'm really independent because I believe I will put my country before my party system
38:24
of party affiliation anytime, any day, talk about US, Senator Joe Manchin,
38:30
I want to talk about the MVP, the Mountain Valley of Mountain Valley
38:34
Pipelines or the gas is flowing. The gas is flowing, thank god.
38:37
Took ten years and it doubled the price of the line that we'll all be
38:42
paying a price for. It went from three and a half approx. Me.
38:45
Three and a half billion dollars to over seven and a half billion dollars
38:49
because of litigation and also the permitting and the permitting, the permitting hassle that
38:54
you go through to get anything it proved to be built in America is seven
38:59
to ten, thirteen to fifteen years longer. And we're trying to change that.
39:02
And that's my commitment right now to get that done before all leave Congress,
39:07
is getting the permitting process that when we have something that's needed in America,
39:10
West Virginia or any other state and it has to be done for basically
39:15
the quality of life for every citizen, but also the defense of our nation,
39:20
and we can't do it in a timely fashion because of anybody, there's
39:22
always going to be someone protesting. They have a right to be heard and
39:27
they have a right to make sure that we've answered every question. But enough
39:30
is enough? Can six years of litigation should be a six month litigation.
39:36
We're changing things that we can to make sure that if there's something wrong,
39:39
it's not going to be done. It should not have be done. The
39:42
MVP. There's a demand for that product in the southeast. They're desperate for
39:46
the natural gas that we have abundance in West Virginia and for the sake of
39:50
our nation and also for the defense of our nation because of all that gas
39:53
will be used in the basis that we have in South Caroline, North Carolina.
39:58
So all of that is going to be good for America and it's going
40:00
to be good for West Virginia forty five million dollars a year. Add the
40:05
lorem taxes to our state, another approximately about one hundred and fifty to two
40:08
hundred million of royalties coming into the landowners in West Virginia. So it's it's
40:13
going to be a windfall for everybody. There's been a lot in the news,
40:16
Senator, and I know Hobby covered it in detail a couple of days
40:19
ago about bump stocks. You have joined a bipartisan effort to ban them.
40:22
I know you're a gun guy. Explain to the average person, though,
40:27
what a bump stock is and why you feel so passionately about this sirm.
40:30
Well, they can get on the video and see it turns a semi automatic
40:34
into a full blown machine gun automatic. I mean, you hold sugar and
40:37
as as far as everything until m to your chain, am to your magazine.
40:40
So it's just basically. In twenty eighteen, President Donald Trump put a
40:45
ban and applauded him for doing that. I supported him one hundred percent on
40:51
banning those things after that horrible massacre in Las Vegas, which is still the
40:54
most horrific massacre we've ever had in the United States, civilians on civilians,
41:00
and that stopped it, okay to a certain extent that we have to go
41:04
back and create legislation to permanently band it. There's no need for that at
41:08
all. In nineteen thirty four, we stopped you know, the old Tommy
41:14
guns the gangsters used, and David The whole thing about guns is this,
41:19
No one's going to take your right to own a gun. No one.
41:22
That's not going to happen. The Second Amendment is guarded preciously by both sides,
41:27
more side more so than the Republicans, but both sides understand. What
41:30
I tried to explain to everybody, especially to the far left, is the
41:35
bottom line is this responsible gun ownership. And that's why when I did the
41:39
with Pat Toomey, Republican from Pennsylvania, and I didn't mansion to me,
41:44
it was only for background Dave, I don't know anybody I've ever hunted with,
41:46
or shot with, or done anything with with guns that didn't have a
41:52
background check. And gun sends in West Virginia, you're taught at a very
41:54
young age you never loan your gun to an irresponsible member of your family or
42:00
a stranger. You never sell your gun to a stranger. You hunt your
42:04
safety. You never have a gun loaded anywhere until you get in the woods,
42:07
to whether you're going to hunt, or basically you're at the shooting range,
42:09
when you're in a target practice or a skeet shoot, you never have
42:14
a loaded gun. That's gun sense. So we teach that at a very
42:17
young age in West Virginia. But you have people have no idea about gun
42:22
etiquette or gun sense, and for some reason, they can just walk in
42:27
to a gun store and get a background check if they never had a criminal
42:30
record, and if they're a criminal, they can find a gun show somewhere
42:36
at a mall or somewhere or a civic center and there'll be somebody selling it
42:40
and not requiring any background checks. That's what we were trying to stop.
42:45
We want to make sure that we know who the person the background, whether
42:50
they have a criminal or a mental problem or in their records, so we
42:54
can prevent them from having a gun that they're not responsible to have one.
43:00
Be one final thing before we let you go. We originally had this interview
43:02
scheduled for yesterday, West Virginia Day, and so we said some things came
43:06
up. I'm going to give you an opportunity to close this out by talking
43:08
about your love for the say to West Virginia, sir, Well, my
43:12
love fair starter when I was born here in Farmington in West Virginia, little
43:15
town of five hundred people, and watching how the hard working people that I
43:20
know and my family and everybody around. They all worked in the mines urre.
43:24
My grandfather had a little grocery store like most in the fifties in West
43:29
Virginia. And you watch that that work ethic, that's just basically it's in
43:34
your DNA, and you're so proud. And my grandfather served in World War
43:37
One, my uncle served in the Marines, one uncle served in a Navy,
43:40
and my dad in the Army. And the proud patriotism that they have.
43:45
I've never met any coal miner that wasn't patriotic. And they have mined
43:50
the coal that made the still that built the gunge and ships that truly built
43:53
the middle class, if you will, and the industrial might that we have.
43:58
This little state's given everything she has, and the Good Lord bless us
44:01
with the greatest venues you've ever looked at. In beauty, I'm surpassed.
44:06
So yes, I'm very proud. And they've given me bragging rights all over
44:08
our country and around the world as I've traveled. It's also the birthday.
44:13
Yesterday was the birthday of not only the state of West Virginia, June twenty,
44:16
eighteen sixty three, but it was my wife's birthday. So I got
44:21
to celebrate that again too. You better get that in there all I'm that
44:23
way in there, and I've never forgotten it either day, because both of
44:27
them happened the same time. So that's been a blessing. Well you better
44:30
not say they both happened in eighteen sixty three, sir, No, no,
44:32
no, no. But you know, when you think about West Virginia
44:36
has been on the right side of history every time. In eighteen sixty three,
44:39
we were on the right side of history. We fought for the unions,
44:43
and we fought basically against slavery. We fought basically for equal rights.
44:49
We fought for all the things that people should enjoy. And I've always said
44:52
this, everyone deserves to have an opportunity to live a quality life in this
44:57
great country of ours, and West Virginia has the fence to death. Now,
45:00
there might be some people outside the mode of what you believe is normal,
45:05
or I believe might be normal, or a majority of people believe might
45:07
be normal, but they still have that right to be protected, to have
45:10
the opportunity for the quality of life they desire. And that's what I continue
45:15
to fight for. And I think our little state, basically, I think
45:19
represents that as well as any state in the country. I'm a proud West
45:22
Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, Independent from West Virginia. It's always a pleasure to
45:25
have you on the show, sir. Thank you very much for being here,

48:51

to. But he did say and his exitsman, by the way, that
48:57

49:00
we'll see when when that happens. Tex says, remember when Republicans lost their
49:06
minds after Obama was elected and vowed to make him a one term president.
49:08
I do Republicans have been playing the game, the name calling game for years
49:14
now. They're acting like victims because their party courts the white nationalists. They're
49:19
morons. Says, that's like all this name I mean, you know when
49:22
you see it all on social media, you know, Trump tards, lib
49:24
tards, you know, it's just it just needs to go away. It's
49:29
just not okay. You and I disagree because I'm a Republican, you're a
49:31
Democrat. I'm Democrat, You're a Republican. We don't need to get into
49:35
all this, I mean, we don't, but as my grandmother used to
49:38
say, and I'll clean it up. Wish in one hand and you know
49:42

49:45
says, who ray for the Mountain Valley Pipeline? It's created temporary jobs.
49:49
West Virginians won't see a reduction on their gas bills and the local residents get
49:52

49:59
said as mansions as fake as can be. I once admired his service to
50:02
the state of nation. Now I see how wrong he was. He serves
50:06
himself and dave as to the question about calling out Nazis. Ever, dare
50:09
to ask Senator Capitol or any Republican who condemn the vile language incessantly hurled at
50:15
Democrats or so called Rhinos for that matter, start by asking them to condemn
50:19
the despicable notion that jay six criminals or hostages and political prisoners to the texture.
50:25
I agree, But do you think do you think that's gonna happen?
50:30
Probably? Probably not. Speaking of politics a little politics this morning, I
50:36
am told that Republican nominee for governor at Attorney General Patrick Morrissey and former candidate
50:40
for governor Chris Miller were seen at Starbucks on the boulevard yesterday when somebody told
50:49
me that somebody just happened to see them, and that's fine. There's probably
50:52
a reason, though I thought about this. That probably a reason I have
50:54
never seriously considered a run for politics, because I don't know, after being
51:00
trashed in a campaign and I could set someone, I could sit down with
51:06
someone over a cup of coffee and say, hey, how can I help
51:08
you get elected? They must just be better people than I am. That's
51:14
that's all I can say about it. I suspect that the ones who were
51:20
the Republican nominees for governor on the Republican side who did not get elected,
51:24
talking about former Delegate Capitol and of course Chris Miller and Secretary of State At
51:28
mac Warner, I expect they will line up behind Morrissey. Mac Warner on
51:32
this show already said that in his role as a citizen, not a Secretary
51:36
of state h and and by the fact that they were sitting at Starbucks yesterday
51:40
having a Mocha Frappe latte together, I guess Chris Miller will too. I'm
51:46
sure that they're all going to support Morrissey. But to what extent will they
51:52
go? I just I just don't see Capito U in particular, uh walking
51:58
