- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We're here for the next two hours talking patriots, but
- 0:23Speaker 2: of course the big topic Jared Duran. So you get
- 0:26Speaker 2: into Hall of Fame, you don't get a ring, no ring.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I think it was an oversight, Are you sure? Yeah,
- 0:31Speaker 2: because I think.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Maury got one, didn't he Mary's not in the Holiday
- 0:33Speaker 3: You know what Hall of Fame he's in is the
- 0:35Speaker 3: one he tried to force his way into on Tom
- 0:37Speaker 3: Brady Knight, And you correct me if I'm wrong. Freddy,
- 0:39Speaker 3: I don't remember any year that we did not have
- 0:41Speaker 3: bad Do.
- 0:41Speaker 4: You feel like Bill's like we could have just not
- 0:43Speaker 4: done it?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Like, yeah, I left for nothing.
- 0:48Speaker 5: In his ten playoff games, he's twenty one to four touchdowns?
- 0:52Speaker 6: Real?
- 0:52Speaker 3: Is that good in crunch time? You're more of a
- 0:54Speaker 3: numbers guy than me, But is that good in crunch time?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Her friend was the guy who wrote Suit Nazi Spike.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It's by Ferrison.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I did a show with it to he's
- 1:09Speaker 2: very tall. He doesn't sound like he's tall.
- 1:12Speaker 1: This is Patriot's.

- 1:21Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here
- 1:26Speaker 2: at Jillette Stadium, and if I sound a little bit
- 1:29Speaker 2: more excited than I usually am, it's because this is
- 1:33Speaker 2: the week that training camp opens, Veterans reported today rookies
- 1:37Speaker 2: are already here, coaches are in the building, and tomorrow
- 1:41Speaker 2: we will be live at eleven o'clock with Patriots Unfiltered,
- 1:44Speaker 2: high above the practice fields, bringing you all the action.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But for now, it's our regular cast. It's Paul, it's
- 1:50Speaker 2: Evan Deuce, It's me Matt Lebooth Jordan on the cameras,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and we're here for the next two hours knocking ourselves
- 1:57Speaker 2: in the mouth with our microphones. No talking about Patriots. Today,
- 2:02Speaker 2: girod Mayo had his kickoff If you will press conference,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and Mike you volunteer to kind of recap what he
- 2:10Speaker 2: had to say.
- 2:11Speaker 4: That's about competition, about competition.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I like it.
- 2:15Speaker 4: No, that was a big theme though. I think that's
- 2:17Speaker 4: probably a good place to start. I also just think
- 2:20Speaker 4: the best place to start is it's about winning games, right, like,
- 2:22Speaker 4: that's what he said, and I think, you know, we'll
- 2:24Speaker 4: talk a lot about drop Mayo style and you know,
- 2:27Speaker 4: maybe how he's evolving a little bit and what he's anticipating,
- 2:29Speaker 4: the things he's changing, but it's just the bottom line
- 2:32Speaker 4: is he's got to win games. And whether you agree
- 2:33Speaker 4: with how they've been doing things or not, they got
- 2:36Speaker 4: a role start putting a team together here. So I'm
- 2:38Speaker 4: excited like you are. Fred I did think, I guess
- 2:40Speaker 4: just to highlight one point Paul that we talked about
- 2:42Speaker 4: that was interesting. We talked about the practices shifting from
- 2:46Speaker 4: usually nine thirty in the morning to now eleven to one,
- 2:49Speaker 4: and he said, you know, it's about having some time
- 2:52Speaker 4: before the meet, before the practice to meet, whereas it
- 2:55Speaker 4: sounded like in the past they would meet late at night,
- 2:57Speaker 4: they'd have to keep those things in their mind carry
- 2:59Speaker 4: them over to practice the next morning. So uh, that's why,
- 3:02Speaker 4: you know, we know we speculator a little bit. I
- 3:04Speaker 4: thought that was something that.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Got on Freddy.
- 3:06Speaker 2: That was my thing, I think, and it makes sense.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You get in the classroom, you talk about what you
- 3:11Speaker 2: want to do, what you're working on, and then you
- 3:14Speaker 2: bring it right out onto the field. So then you
- 3:16Speaker 2: implement it and then when you're done, take your shout
- 3:19Speaker 2: or you do your lifting if you have to or whatever,
- 3:21Speaker 2: and and you go home.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I got there were a couple couple of you
- 3:26Speaker 3: go home, which is what my that's an inside joke
- 3:29Speaker 3: with me and Freddy. I had a boss at at
- 3:31Speaker 3: the Herald that used to say, you know, you do this,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you do that, you do this, and when you're done,
- 3:34Speaker 3: you go home. The you go home, and that was
- 3:36Speaker 3: part of like my training. When you're done, you go home.
- 3:39Speaker 2: As opposed to just stay there sleep overnight.
- 3:42Speaker 3: So a couple of bookkeeping things you did. Mayo did
- 3:45Speaker 3: say that everybody's here, all the players are accounted for,
- 3:50Speaker 3: specifically about Judah and Godschab, both obviously in the final
- 3:54Speaker 3: year or their contracts. Both have sort of publicly said
- 3:58Speaker 3: that they're looking for for some more of Judan's like
- 4:01Speaker 3: out there. Yeah, well gotcha put it out on social media.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Judon kind of pushed back a little bit on Badard's
- 4:07Speaker 3: report there, but regardless, may I acknowledged on both it's
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think the way he put it was, they're all here,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and my expectation would be that they're they're here. To compete,
- 4:20Speaker 3: so whether or not they're going to be on the
- 4:21Speaker 3: field tomorrow or probably more importantly the start of next
- 4:26Speaker 3: week when pads come on in actually doing things we've
- 4:29Speaker 3: seen in the past. Sometimes some of these guys take
- 4:33Speaker 3: part in practice as normal. Sometimes they kind of are
- 4:36Speaker 3: on their own schedule. So we'll see that next week.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But there was a couple of book keeping.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Before we get into the players. Evan'll update us on
- 4:43Speaker 2: what the players had to say today. I want to
- 4:45Speaker 2: go back to Mayo a little bit because he was asked,
- 4:49Speaker 2: as we expected about Drake May and Brissett, and he said,
- 4:54Speaker 2: right now, Prissett is the most pro ready quarterback and
- 4:57Speaker 2: he is our starter, but of course, without question, without question,
- 5:01Speaker 2: and Andy, okay, no surprise is there, right, But he
- 5:05Speaker 2: also left it open. Listen, if, as he said, if
- 5:08Speaker 2: may goes out and balls out, then it's an open
- 5:11Speaker 2: topic and we'll see. So that's not a surprise either
- 5:16Speaker 2: to me. I think you have to leave it open
- 5:17Speaker 2: because you don't know as a head coach what's going
- 5:19Speaker 2: to happen once these guys get on the field, so
- 5:22Speaker 2: you have to leave the door open for any scenario.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And it's my opinion that he is going to go
- 5:28Speaker 2: out and ball out and show that he is the guy,
- 5:32Speaker 2: the best quarterback on this team, and that that's my prediction.
- 5:35Speaker 2: But you know a lot of people were running with us.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Oh he's not saying, you know, you know, tipping his
- 5:40Speaker 2: hat one way or the other. Well, why would he
- 5:43Speaker 2: you know, he doesn't know. He doesn't know the answer
- 5:45Speaker 2: right now.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I think I actually look at it the opposite way
- 5:49Speaker 3: of I haven't really heard people. I thought it was
- 5:52Speaker 3: a pretty strong it's per set well right now, yes,
- 5:56Speaker 3: but but not like close he said, by far.
- 5:59Speaker 2: At this time out of the spring. Yes, at this moment.
- 6:01Speaker 2: He made it very clear Perssett is the starter, no
- 6:06Speaker 2: doubt about it, if the season started today.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I don't think it was a wishy washy but I
- 6:10Speaker 3: think definitive.
- 6:11Speaker 2: But he left it open that conditions in the ground
- 6:15Speaker 2: might change depending on performance on the field. I mean, right,
- 6:19Speaker 2: was that accurate or not?
- 6:20Speaker 4: That is accurate? But I think it was also you know,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and he expanded that into general speak of anyone could
- 6:26Speaker 4: step up. Yes, yeah, so, I mean I think he
- 6:28Speaker 4: covered his bases a little bit there. I mean I
- 6:30Speaker 4: did listen to Jacobe. I mean, he sounds like he's
- 6:32Speaker 4: ready to go.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And I guess bottom line, in so many words, if
- 6:37Speaker 2: Bill Belichick was the head coach, he'd be saying the
- 6:39Speaker 2: same thing, except maybe in a different way. But this
- 6:43Speaker 2: is I think it's the only thing he could say
- 6:45Speaker 2: at this point.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, Bill was singing a similar tune about
- 6:49Speaker 5: Cam Newton when Mac Jones was a rookie. Right after
- 6:51Speaker 5: the draft, when they drafted Mac Jones, Bill said, Cam's
- 6:54Speaker 5: our quarterback and it was that until the bitter, bitter
- 6:57Speaker 5: end when they finally made right and I finally happened.
- 7:02Speaker 5: So as of right now, it doesn't really hold much
- 7:05Speaker 5: weight to me for him to say that Jacob were
- 7:06Speaker 5: said as the starter right now.
- 7:07Speaker 3: They haven't even put pads on yet, right It did
- 7:09Speaker 3: to me.
- 7:10Speaker 5: We didn't even have appropriated to you.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Yeah, if I if I had a ten percent chance
- 7:14Speaker 3: in my mind of maybe being the starter on week one,
- 7:17Speaker 3: it's down to five percent to me, okay, and that
- 7:21Speaker 3: and that would probably be something happening for me.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It changes nothing, It changes nothing.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I think I'm with Paul on this one a little bit,
- 7:28Speaker 4: Like I mean, I just think he was pretty firm
- 7:30Speaker 4: with it. But I think the thing I keep thinking
- 7:32Speaker 4: about is how will we know? How will the general
- 7:34Speaker 4: fans know? And I think it's gonna be easy. It's
- 7:36Speaker 4: gonna be easy to get well. I mean, but it
- 7:38Speaker 4: is a good point of discussion because I think it's
- 7:40Speaker 4: hard to see Jacoby Brissette out there and you know,
- 7:43Speaker 4: you don't know what you don't know, and he's you know,
- 7:45Speaker 4: making the right reads and he's making the right throws.
- 7:47Speaker 4: We don't know. But I think everyone's going to be
- 7:48Speaker 4: enamored with Drake May, and Drake May is going to
- 7:51Speaker 4: do something athletically special and they're going to give that.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You know, that's going to be a weighted grade for
- 7:56Speaker 4: Drake May. Whereas if Joey Sett just goes out there
- 7:59Speaker 4: guilty of that and it's you know, and it's throwing
- 8:01Speaker 4: the ball to the right guys, you know, it's and I.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Just think it's we're hoping to see things and that
- 8:06Speaker 2: sometimes blinds you. Yeah, but I didn't know if me
- 8:09Speaker 2: is really grasp my prediction. You know, my prediction is
- 8:12Speaker 2: it will be apparent, it will be obvious, Yeah to everyone.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'd love to see what that looks like.
- 8:18Speaker 4: I mean, that's what you better be.
- 8:20Speaker 3: To your point, Mike, you know, like, how will we know?
- 8:24Speaker 3: It's a great question because we watched a bunch of
- 8:27Speaker 3: practices in the spring. You guys watched a few more
- 8:29Speaker 3: than I did. But I think it was overly apparent.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I mean, other than the breakdown of the reps, I'm
- 8:35Speaker 3: talking about the performance in those reps, like and for
- 8:39Speaker 3: him to say it that's clearly after that, and like
- 8:41Speaker 3: for him to say it was so definitive, like did
- 8:44Speaker 3: you see it that way?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Like back with Cam and Max Spring with the Spring? Oh,
- 8:49Speaker 2: I didn't think it was that definitive.
- 8:50Speaker 3: No, yeah, well Mayo did.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Kobe was that much better? Well, because he's seeing he
- 8:56Speaker 2: knows that he's right.
- 8:58Speaker 3: This is what I'm saying. I'm not saying was wrong.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'm saying this is how different it can be for
- 9:03Speaker 3: the coaches as opposed to us just watching.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Absolutely agreed. Yeah, I mean we saw some physical things
- 9:10Speaker 2: that may did that were like whoa, you know, maybe
- 9:13Speaker 2: Jacobe can't do that, But like you said, there's a
- 9:16Speaker 2: mental part of that whole spring in early summer that
- 9:20Speaker 2: the coaches know that we don't.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, there's no question he's also starting Jacobybrisset from
- 9:26Speaker 5: a much higher point today. He was talking about his
- 9:30Speaker 5: experience in this offense and playing it in twenty twenty two,
- 9:33Speaker 5: and he's basically coaching guys out there right now at
- 9:35Speaker 5: this time of year, are not.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Literally but helping me.
- 9:38Speaker 5: And he's helping guys this time of year, not only
- 9:42Speaker 5: just Drake May, but when we talked to David Andrews
- 9:45Speaker 5: in the spring, David Andrews was saying that Jacoby was
- 9:47Speaker 5: helping him with some of the protections and different calls
- 9:50Speaker 5: that are now going to be called different things or
- 9:53Speaker 5: terminology that's going to be different this time around. So
- 9:56Speaker 5: that getting over that hump for Drake May against Jacoby
- 10:00Speaker 5: is going to be a lot harder than the physical stuff.
- 10:02Speaker 5: You know, he should be more physically talented than Jacob.
- 10:05Speaker 5: We said, if he's not, then we have bigger problems, right,
- 10:08Speaker 5: So that part of it should be taken care of.
- 10:10Speaker 5: But I also think we can't lose sight of the
- 10:13Speaker 5: fact that you don't want the offense just oh well,
- 10:15Speaker 5: he knows it better and it's more on time when okay,
- 10:18Speaker 5: but is it productive? Are they scoring? Are they moving
- 10:22Speaker 5: the ball? Because yeah, it's great that when he hits
- 10:24Speaker 5: his third step in his drop, the ball is out
- 10:26Speaker 5: and it's to the right guy. But if it's for
- 10:28Speaker 5: three yard completion, then what are we really doing here?
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 10:32Speaker 4: I even look at it through the lens of a
- 10:34Speaker 4: couple episodes again on Hard Knocks, when they had Drake
- 10:36Speaker 4: May in there, and you just have Brian Dable feeding
- 10:38Speaker 4: him elementary things about the giant offense. But you can
- 10:41Speaker 4: see where Drake May and all rookies are starting from.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Whereas Jacoby Brissett he knows all that stuff already. So
- 10:48Speaker 4: it's I think there's a lot of ground for Drake
- 10:50Speaker 4: May to make up. But I do think that there's
- 10:53Speaker 4: gonna be some intrigue with the athletics stuff, and you know,
- 10:55Speaker 4: we get in the red zone Paul probably probably gonna
- 10:57Speaker 4: be in the red zone again. I'm guessing you know
- 10:58Speaker 4: that I think there is that is interesting spot.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I mean, watch how much different does girod start training
- 11:05Speaker 3: camps than the way that building.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Ye?
- 11:06Speaker 2: All right, so we want to get to what the
- 11:08Speaker 2: players had to say. But before we do that, I
- 11:10Speaker 2: want to let people know that around twelve thirty want
- 11:13Speaker 2: to do some evans. Guys, they're going to be joining
- 11:16Speaker 2: us via the phone. Aaron Shatz from ft FTN Fantasy,
- 11:22Speaker 2: and he's going to talk to us about his Patriots
- 11:25Speaker 2: predictions for the season and what those predictions are based on.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So we'll talk to him around twelve thirty, but before that,
- 11:33Speaker 2: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 11:35Speaker 2: not seen on TV, go to buy at toyota dot com.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It's Toyota's official website for deals from the official vehicle
- 11:42Speaker 2: of the New England Patriots, Toyota. Let's go to training
- 11:45Speaker 2: camp and of course when you're there, it's easy to drink,
- 11:49Speaker 2: it's easy to enjoy bud Light, the official beer sponsor
- 11:53Speaker 2: of the New England Patriots. So, Evan, you were present
- 11:57Speaker 2: for the players and we had what four guys talk today?
- 12:01Speaker 5: Yeah, four guys. David Andrews will be by shortly. I
- 12:04Speaker 5: would assume, but that he was running a little bit
- 12:06Speaker 5: behind the other guys. But we talked to Jakoybersett, Jonathan Jones,
- 12:10Speaker 5: Juwan Bentley, and then David Andrews will talk to Okay,
- 12:13Speaker 5: hap it.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Up anything of note.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Well, I just think some of the things I was
- 12:17Speaker 5: talking about with jacoiber Set, it's very clear that he
- 12:21Speaker 5: feels extremely comfortable in this system, in this Alex Van
- 12:24Speaker 5: Pelt offense, and probably the most comfortable person player wise
- 12:29Speaker 5: right now with this system is him because he's the
- 12:32Speaker 5: only one that's played in it so far. So I
- 12:34Speaker 5: feel like that's a big thing for him, not only
- 12:38Speaker 5: just competing for the starting job, but also this mentor
- 12:41Speaker 5: role that he's supposedly going to take on as well
- 12:43Speaker 5: with Drake May. It seems like he has a pretty
- 12:46Speaker 5: good grasp, pretty good confidence about himself right now that
- 12:50Speaker 5: he kind of knows what's going on. You know, he's
- 12:52Speaker 5: sort of the elder statesman a little bit now, and
- 12:54Speaker 5: he knows what's going on.
- 12:56Speaker 2: So I want to talk about the mental role a
- 12:59Speaker 2: little bit other than showing Drake May how to carry
- 13:04Speaker 2: himself as a professional. Now, is it fair for us
- 13:07Speaker 2: to expect Jacoby set to be really an on field
- 13:11Speaker 2: meant to form Because if I'm Jacoby Brissett, I want
- 13:14Speaker 2: to play too.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Right, you know, I don't think like that shouldn't be
- 13:16Speaker 4: part of his thought process. His thought process should just
- 13:19Speaker 4: please play quarterback the way that I play quarterback. And
- 13:22Speaker 4: the Patriots went out and got a guy who's a leader,
- 13:24Speaker 4: who's experienced, who has a good personality that they think
- 13:27Speaker 4: is generally likable and going to be helpful. But I
- 13:29Speaker 4: don't think he can go into this job thinking like,
- 13:30Speaker 4: well it's Drake, Okay, Like I'm want to make sure
- 13:32Speaker 4: Drakes got He's got to do his job, and Drake
- 13:34Speaker 4: just has to soak it in, you know, and be
- 13:37Speaker 4: a sponge. Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I agree, And it's about and I think the things
- 13:40Speaker 3: about Brissett that you've heard about his professionalism, how is
- 13:43Speaker 3: he preparing, you know, those are the kinds of things
- 13:47Speaker 3: watching film, getting ready, you know, how he carries himself
- 13:50Speaker 3: in practice, how he's leading on the field. Just be
- 13:53Speaker 3: a good role model for Drake may I don't think
- 13:56Speaker 3: it necessarily has to be taking him by the hand
- 13:58Speaker 3: and saying, right, here's how Vin Peltzer, these are the
- 14:00Speaker 3: five things that you need to do to be successful.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I don't think that that's his job now. If he
- 14:06Speaker 3: does those things, I mean that that's great. Like we
- 14:09Speaker 3: heard a lot of really positive stuff from Kansas City
- 14:12Speaker 3: back in the day when Alex Smith was sort of
- 14:15Speaker 3: holding the place for Patrick Mahomes that he couldn't have
- 14:18Speaker 3: been any any better. But I would say that that's
- 14:21Speaker 3: probably rare where it's that, yeah, sort of tangible that
- 14:26Speaker 3: the incumbent is helping the replacement. It's more of a
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, try not to be a jerk about it.
- 14:32Speaker 3: And by all accounts, I've never spoken to anybody in
- 14:36Speaker 3: this league that's ever had a bad thing to say
- 14:37Speaker 3: about Jacobe Brissett, and that's kind of rare that you
- 14:41Speaker 3: don't have any detractors at all. So I think that
- 14:43Speaker 3: he's going to be a great leader just by example,
- 14:46Speaker 3: you know, and will help big a proponent coming out
- 14:48Speaker 3: of college Parcels and Weiss, Right, Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But I was just going to say that, I mean,
- 14:56Speaker 4: I think that this is the probably the first time
- 14:57Speaker 4: Jacoby Brissett has been a starting quarterback at this point
- 15:00Speaker 4: the season for a team, right, Like, is this the
- 15:01Speaker 4: first time ever that he's been in a training camp
- 15:04Speaker 4: and been the actual starter at this point?
- 15:06Speaker 2: You know?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Like, I don't know, there's just part of me that feels.
- 15:09Speaker 3: In Cleveland in another year.
- 15:12Speaker 4: I mean, I know he started filling in, but I
- 15:14Speaker 4: mean just going into a season, you know, it's an
- 15:16Speaker 4: opportunity for him, and so I just, you know, I
- 15:18Speaker 4: hate having to put everything through. Well, what do you
- 15:20Speaker 4: think about Drake? Are you gonna get Drake right like you.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I mean, he's a guy too, wants to play and
- 15:23Speaker 4: wants a chance. I wants to wants to play. And
- 15:25Speaker 4: I think that, you know, all these questions about Drake
- 15:27Speaker 4: and mentorship and stuff, it just it gets to be
- 15:30Speaker 4: kind of, you know, repetitive, and we all get what
- 15:32Speaker 4: the situation is. But give Jacoby Brissett a chance. Like
- 15:35Speaker 4: you know, maybe he goes out and really gets the
- 15:38Speaker 4: team going pretty well, and you know, is it a
- 15:40Speaker 4: dynamic problem. Maybe not, but you know, everybody's on board,
- 15:43Speaker 4: everyone's you know, playing hard. I think that there's a
- 15:45Speaker 4: way he can help this team, even that Drake May
- 15:48Speaker 4: comes in. And I just don't want to think of
- 15:49Speaker 4: Jacoby Brissett as just a placeholder and we're just going
- 15:51Speaker 4: to discard him the second that everybody feels that Drake
- 15:54Speaker 4: May is ready and it's like, all right, thanks on
- 15:55Speaker 4: to the next one. I mean, I know that's probably
- 15:57Speaker 4: how it will be.
- 15:57Speaker 2: You drafted this third overall, Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 4: But give Jacoby Brisett some respect at this point during
- 16:03Speaker 4: training camp, you know other than all right, all right,
- 16:05Speaker 4: we get while you're here, just tell us more.
- 16:07Speaker 3: About Joe used to say all the time it's it's
- 16:09Speaker 3: really hard to be a player in the league without
- 16:12Speaker 3: worrying about being a player and a.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Coach, right, Like, it's enough on your plate, it's.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Enough for everybody to worry about themselves.
- 16:19Speaker 2: What did Jonathan Jones have to say, because he's an
- 16:21Speaker 2: important piece this year.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Well, it's interesting because he's now the longest tenured defensive
- 16:26Speaker 5: player on the team and that's hard to believe that
- 16:30Speaker 5: we're at that point with him. But he's an elder
- 16:32Speaker 5: statesman truly at this point on that side of the ball.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And how old is he?
- 16:37Speaker 3: Thirty one?
- 16:38Speaker 5: Thirty one?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, look at him as younger, but thirty one already.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he came in.
- 16:45Speaker 2: You should probably look that.
- 16:46Speaker 5: Yeah, but yeah, he you know, just talked about his
- 16:51Speaker 5: role in the defense a little bit, said, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 5: I just like playing football, whether I play inside, outside,
- 16:56Speaker 5: you know, in the back end, whatever, wherever they have me.
- 16:59Speaker 5: And but I think there's also an element now of
- 17:02Speaker 5: a leadership role for him as well that he would
- 17:05Speaker 5: like to take on. And talking about Christian Gonzalez, he
- 17:09Speaker 5: calls Alex Austin double A. That's his nickname for him,
- 17:12Speaker 5: and he said that at times they'll come up to
- 17:14Speaker 5: him and ask him for advice, and at first his
- 17:17Speaker 5: initial reactions like, you know, why are you asking me
- 17:19Speaker 5: for And then it kind of dawns on him like,
- 17:21Speaker 5: oh wait a second, I actually have advice to give you.
- 17:24Speaker 5: I actually, you know, can help you here. So I
- 17:27Speaker 5: feel like even he's starting to come into it a
- 17:30Speaker 5: little bit, but is almost like taken aback that. Okay,
- 17:34Speaker 5: now Slater's on the staff, but he's not a player anymore,
- 17:37Speaker 5: and you know, Devin mccordy's not here anymore, and it's
- 17:40Speaker 5: he's kind of the guy I'm very curious to see
- 17:43Speaker 5: if he gets named to captain. I don't believe he's
- 17:45Speaker 5: ever been a captain officially, so he's someone that certainly
- 17:50Speaker 5: has that leadership void type of thing that he's going
- 17:54Speaker 5: to have to take over.
- 17:55Speaker 4: It seems like he was real banged up last year too,
- 17:57Speaker 4: Like I just felt like he was fighting injuries the
- 17:59Speaker 4: whole year.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Be the question I would ask Evan is he didn't
- 18:01Speaker 3: do much in the spring. I know he said he
- 18:03Speaker 3: was ready to go for training camp, that he mentioned
- 18:05Speaker 3: any of the things that he was dealing with.
- 18:07Speaker 5: He just said that a lot of the stuff that
- 18:08Speaker 5: he got done was clean up procedure from things that
- 18:12Speaker 5: were nagging injuries from last year. And he did say
- 18:15Speaker 5: he's ready to go.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Full go and he will be thirty one in September.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Will be thirty one. Yeah, and the contract week.
- 18:21Speaker 3: In week two, he will turn thirty one.
- 18:24Speaker 4: It is a little change in the schedule though, I
- 18:25Speaker 4: mean a lot of the guys have been going out
- 18:27Speaker 4: running their conditioning tests. I think Bentley just to come
- 18:29Speaker 4: off the field. But usually the pup stuff would happen
- 18:32Speaker 4: last week and we know, but when they arrived they
- 18:35Speaker 4: came did They used to come earlier. So I just
- 18:37Speaker 4: felt like we always knew the week before who was
- 18:39Speaker 4: going to.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Be injured guys. He'll be in waves, so injured guys
- 18:43Speaker 3: would have been And I do think that you're right
- 18:46Speaker 3: about the time, and this is one of those things
- 18:48Speaker 3: it's anecdotally to me. I might not have this right.
- 18:51Speaker 3: The rookies came on Monday, right Friday Friday, so that's
- 18:55Speaker 3: definitely later than normal. It used to be like a
- 18:59Speaker 3: week before, think the rookies, the quarterbacks and anybody who
- 19:02Speaker 3: was injured, and that's when you get the first wave
- 19:04Speaker 3: of lists and then I mean, probably a good sign
- 19:09Speaker 3: that you didn't see any of those guys on any
- 19:11Speaker 3: list or anything. But I wonder if Gerard does it
- 19:14Speaker 3: a little bit differently, and maybe they've been here and
- 19:16Speaker 3: they've been working on a little bit, but they're all
- 19:18Speaker 3: taking the test today. Yeah, because he did say today definitively. Yeah, Yeah,
- 19:22Speaker 3: we have a conditioning run and that's part of the
- 19:24Speaker 3: physical that's part of that whole process, just like building.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Is that a league requirement that there's some form of
- 19:29Speaker 2: baseline condition or something like that. I don't think something
- 19:32Speaker 2: that's just a team by team how they do it.
- 19:34Speaker 4: No, He seemed to kind of relish, like, no, that's
- 19:36Speaker 4: that's stand.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 3: JN.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Bentley said that it's that he actually had just come
- 19:40Speaker 5: from the conditioning test when he went up to the
- 19:42Speaker 5: podium and he said, it's essentially the exact same that's
- 19:46Speaker 5: what Bill had them do. He said, you know, maybe
- 19:48Speaker 5: a few minor things here and there, but he was
- 19:51Speaker 5: you know, he had a smile. He's like it was
- 19:53Speaker 5: it was good, you know it it was a conditioning test.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Mayo did mention Born that, you know, asked about him.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Played boy, He's we'll see, we're gonna run.
- 20:02Speaker 3: See that's one that under the old regime, he would
- 20:05Speaker 3: have already done that. Yeah, yeah, as an injured guy.
- 20:08Speaker 3: He wouldn't be doing that today because a guy coming
- 20:10Speaker 3: off in not an injured guy, guy coming off injury.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Yeah, so definitely strange. I mean I think we're all
- 20:14Speaker 4: assuming today they'll probably announce strange to pup. I mean
- 20:18Speaker 4: maybe born.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see. I was kind of into maybe he
- 20:22Speaker 3: has already done it. He said that they will run today.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He said, that's what Gerd said this morning.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Even the guy's coming off injury.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Well whoever, who, like, no one has done the conditioning run,
- 20:33Speaker 3: according to Gerard Tea until because running today, if you're.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Coming off, if you're coming off injury, I would assume
- 20:39Speaker 2: that you don't put him out in the field doing
- 20:41Speaker 2: anything until you're sure that he's ready.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So right, Yeah, Well, it's like when you do that
- 20:46Speaker 3: conditioning run. This is why I used to sort of
- 20:50Speaker 3: wonder how you could fail it, Like you don't just
- 20:53Speaker 3: it's not like Paul and Mike go out there and say,
- 20:55Speaker 3: let's do you think we could do the conditioning run,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and you know, maybe Mike does it, Paul doesn't, whatever, no,
- 21:00Speaker 3: or you've practiced, it's like.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you know what the require the marathon.
- 21:04Speaker 3: You know you can run a marathon, Yeah, because you've
- 21:06Speaker 3: been working out and working ramping up to running a marathon.
- 21:10Speaker 3: But guys still, guys still, I think they they get
- 21:13Speaker 3: psyched out.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but not.
- 21:15Speaker 4: We had to run the six thirty mile holy Cross.
- 21:18Speaker 4: That was the I mean that was the the bar.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Now did you have to skate backwards when you did that?
- 21:23Speaker 4: I could, I probably could. I would have done it
- 21:25Speaker 4: much faster than that. One other thing though, Javon Baker
- 21:28Speaker 4: little note Andre Callian today broke thumb or fractured thumb
- 21:32Speaker 4: and a.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Broke that was his injury. It's not a new injury. Yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 2: just to clarify that it was from the spring that
- 21:39Speaker 2: was what was holding him back.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah, he's okay to go or some pictures on Patriots
- 21:43Speaker 4: dot Com check him out.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Thumb are just being six weeks, right, I mean he
- 21:47Speaker 2: should be fine. Yeah, at least not legs or anything
- 21:50Speaker 2: like that unless there's ligaments. So yeah, I did.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Anything with legs. I mean we talked about I think
- 21:56Speaker 4: ought it wasn't like a hams you know.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Like that stuff, just like right soft tissue. Yeah, I
- 22:00Speaker 2: would agree.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Broken bone better than soft tissue. That sounds.
- 22:05Speaker 4: I really want to see him tomorrow. I mean not tomorrow.
- 22:08Speaker 4: I'm just saying camp I know, I know, look, I know,
- 22:09Speaker 4: tomorrow is gonna be a little lackluster. There's just gonna
- 22:11Speaker 4: helmets on. It's you know, not gonna be ill all of.
- 22:14Speaker 3: A sudden your enthusiasm.
- 22:16Speaker 2: No, I.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Don't want to imply that we're going to see something
- 22:21Speaker 4: tomorrow that like, you know, but I want to see
- 22:23Speaker 4: how he moves again, and I just I just want
- 22:25Speaker 4: to see how involved he is, because as Evan said
- 22:27Speaker 4: a few times, he just moves a little different than
- 22:29Speaker 4: the rest of the guys. He's got some explosion from
- 22:31Speaker 4: his legs. And you know, I don't think Polk's ever
- 22:33Speaker 4: going to be a shortened T shirt kind of guy.
- 22:35Speaker 4: He's going to be game day kind of guy. But Baker,
- 22:38Speaker 4: I think could be that guy. Maybe we're holding out
- 22:40Speaker 4: hope because he just didn't do that much and he's
- 22:42Speaker 4: like the lone guy left that you're still kind of like,
- 22:43Speaker 4: maybe he's a guy, but he's he's definitely one of
- 22:47Speaker 4: the top of my list, and I just throw to
- 22:48Speaker 4: buy in there too. Didn't really do much in the
- 22:50Speaker 4: spring or didn't. He didn't participate, so he seemed like
- 22:52Speaker 4: he was recovering some something. Is he ready to go?
- 22:55Speaker 4: So if you guys to kind of keep an eye
- 22:57Speaker 4: on it.
- 22:57Speaker 2: And uh, I don't know if we mention already. Judaan
- 23:01Speaker 2: is here, Gotcha is here? To what capacity they get involved,
- 23:05Speaker 2: We'll see, but they are here.
- 23:07Speaker 3: It's just the continuation of my invisibility.
- 23:11Speaker 2: It's all right. I'm just repeating it just in case
- 23:13Speaker 2: people tune in at different times, you know. So that's
- 23:17Speaker 2: kind of the state of the team. We'll get to
- 23:20Speaker 2: your phone calls, we'll get to your emails, we'll get
- 23:22Speaker 2: to Aaron Shatz in a little bit. But around the league,
- 23:25Speaker 2: there's some stuff going around Brandon Ayuk. That story is
- 23:28Speaker 2: still out there. And of course the Patriots aren't get
- 23:31Speaker 2: mentioned whenever that comes up, because I guess the reports
- 23:33Speaker 2: are I don't know how long ago, but they did
- 23:36Speaker 2: reach out to the forty nine ers. Forty nine ers
- 23:38Speaker 2: weren't interested in anything that Patriots were presumably offering.
- 23:44Speaker 3: And the most recent report was the second round pick
- 23:46Speaker 3: that they offered before the draft.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so but are you wants to get traded? We'll
- 23:52Speaker 2: see what happens, but that's out there. There's talk. There
- 23:57Speaker 2: was a report today I forget. I think it might
- 23:59Speaker 2: have been Sports Business Journal about the eighteen game schedule
- 24:03Speaker 2: that at a high level, they're continuing to talk about
- 24:06Speaker 2: that at the league, and you know, they would like
- 24:10Speaker 2: if they do it, they would like to do it
- 24:12Speaker 2: before the current CBA expires, so they'd like to do
- 24:15Speaker 2: it as an amendment as soon as possible.
- 24:17Speaker 4: If they an extension.
- 24:19Speaker 2: If they decided to do it, they'd still have to
- 24:21Speaker 2: vote with the players in order to do it, And
- 24:24Speaker 2: in order to do it, they have to give up something,
- 24:26Speaker 2: So maybe it's extra bye weeks or certainly to give
- 24:30Speaker 2: up a preseason game, I'm sure, but that's all to come,
- 24:34Speaker 2: you'll see.
- 24:35Speaker 4: It certainly seems inevitable, Yeah, it is, doesn't It seem
- 24:38Speaker 4: like it was a bigger lift to get to seventeen
- 24:39Speaker 4: than it's going to be to get to eighteen. I
- 24:41Speaker 4: don't know.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I just because seventeen doesn't make sense, It doesn't make sense.
- 24:44Speaker 2: It was just a stepping stone. It was always a step.
- 24:46Speaker 4: To bad number. It's a bad number for Patriots, it's
- 24:48Speaker 4: a bad number for games.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I'm still not used to it. It's ten and seven.
- 24:52Speaker 2: It can't be a five hundred team anymore.
- 24:54Speaker 5: No, it's terrible.
- 24:55Speaker 4: We got to win percentage. So that's coming.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Eighteen games is coming, I would say. I would say
- 25:01Speaker 2: in two years, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's.
- 25:03Speaker 4: What do you think is do you think they'll get
- 25:05Speaker 4: an additional buy and drop a preseason game or one
- 25:08Speaker 4: or the other maybe or both.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 5: I think the whole entire season schedule structure could be
- 25:15Speaker 5: blown from the off season all the way through.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I think even if they didn't do eight team games,
- 25:22Speaker 2: I think if they want to continue with these international games,
- 25:26Speaker 2: they should throw in another bye week anyway, just to
- 25:28Speaker 2: make it a little bit easier to figure out that
- 25:31Speaker 2: schedule and make it fair for teams that have to
- 25:34Speaker 2: play overseas.
- 25:35Speaker 5: Plus you get to get the super Bowl. What President's Day,
- 25:37Speaker 5: that's the holiday in February. Yeah, so if they could
- 25:40Speaker 5: get super Bowl Sunday and then President's Day is Monday,
- 25:43Speaker 5: then everybody's off.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I think.
- 25:46Speaker 2: The same thing.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Could you do that then there's a lot going on people.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Well, they could, but they wanted to move away from
- 25:51Speaker 3: that because of ratings. They felt like the ratings weren't
- 25:54Speaker 3: as good on labor Day weekend.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, because they used to play Labor Day weekend.
- 25:58Speaker 3: It was one one day they actually opened on August
- 26:01Speaker 3: thirty first. Yeah, you remember that, Freddy.
- 26:03Speaker 2: No, I don't remember.
- 26:05Speaker 3: That was for San Diego get the superl Press.
- 26:10Speaker 2: I remember that Monday off something like that.
- 26:12Speaker 3: It might even forty five it is to be.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Doing a Patriots film breakdown.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I remember that because that was in the early days
- 26:18Speaker 2: of the paper obviously, and I couldn't go to San
- 26:21Speaker 2: Diego because somebody had to stay back and get the paper.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Now it was it was the opener this particular year.
- 26:27Speaker 3: It was here, and they blew them out in San
- 26:29Speaker 3: Diego too, because I went to that game in ninety six,
- 26:31Speaker 3: ninety six, but I think it was the ninety seven opener,
- 26:35Speaker 3: maybe the ninety eight. It was one of those years,
- 26:38Speaker 3: and they blew them out on August thirty first. That
- 26:40Speaker 3: was the earliest opener I think.
- 26:41Speaker 8: You know.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Okay, league history, all right, yeah they could. I mean nowadays,
- 26:46Speaker 2: maybe back then it hurt ratings, But do you really
- 26:49Speaker 2: think Labor Day would hurt ratings now?
- 26:50Speaker 3: I don't.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I mean they play on Christmas now, I.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Don't know, right, that's perfectly put I don't know how
- 26:57Speaker 3: you can make the argument that we can play on Christmas,
- 27:01Speaker 3: We're adding extra games on Thanksgiving, we're going to play
- 27:04Speaker 3: on all these different you're.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Going to put it on streaming service, all these.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Different ways that we're going to maximize our revenue, and
- 27:09Speaker 3: then fall back and say, well, we can't play on
- 27:12Speaker 3: Labor Day weekend because.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I think whatever with Evan, I think whatever they whatever
- 27:18Speaker 2: they do that can make it so that the super
- 27:20Speaker 2: Bowl falls on President's weekend is what you want to do.
- 27:23Speaker 2: So you have super Bowl and work your way back
- 27:25Speaker 2: from there on Presidents because that's perfect. Now we have
- 27:29Speaker 2: Monday off after the super Bowl. Let's go off.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Let's go for NFL team, so we can be off
- 27:35Speaker 3: the Monday after the super Bowl.
- 27:37Speaker 4: It's a week after, it is, right now, That is.
- 27:39Speaker 2: That, yes? President?
- 27:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's ridiculous. It's literally the week after and everybody,
- 27:44Speaker 5: you know, go watch the super Bowl on Sunday night
- 27:46Speaker 5: and we're going to work Monday morning, and one week
- 27:49Speaker 5: later it would just be an off day for everybody.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Do you think if when they win, they go to
- 27:54Speaker 2: eighteen games and the season does get pushed that late
- 27:58Speaker 2: into February, they'll make an effort to schedule these later
- 28:02Speaker 2: games in January and February in either well playoffs. You
- 28:06Speaker 2: can't really determine, but try to go as much as
- 28:09Speaker 2: they can warm weather or dome stadiums late in the
- 28:12Speaker 2: season as possible. I don't you don't.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I think they love their weather games.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Okay, it's very scenic.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, well that's that's any other NFL news.
- 28:22Speaker 2: You want to talk about.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Joe Burrow's hair, Yeah, shady looks.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I don't know what what are the women saying?
- 28:33Speaker 5: That's what I said. I just said that to somebody.
- 28:36Speaker 5: I was like, we're supposed to find this person attractive.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Right, I don't think it makes them unattractive.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I don't know. I love I love Joe Burrow on
- 28:45Speaker 4: the field. He's getting a little he's getting a little crazy.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Come back to me, Joe Burrow.
- 28:49Speaker 2: All right, if I was inclined, I would, Yeah, the
- 28:52Speaker 2: hair with him? Do you think he's I think he's
- 28:55Speaker 2: a handsome looking man. You stay healthy. He's what McCauley
- 28:59Speaker 2: what's his name, probably should have looked like when he grew.
- 29:02Speaker 4: Up without the drugs.
- 29:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Yeah, we're getting a little a little overrated territory with
- 29:08Speaker 5: Joe Burt.
- 29:10Speaker 2: You mean on the field just in general. I don't know.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Evan doesn't think he's quite as good looking as the
- 29:16Speaker 3: women make him out to.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Okay, I think he's also talking about his play on
- 29:20Speaker 2: the field.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Well, this is a whole package.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Can't stay healthy, right, Well, that's part of it. He's
- 29:25Speaker 5: been He's had season ending injuries.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Availability is the best ability.
- 29:29Speaker 4: The ego keeps going up, and the game's played is
- 29:32Speaker 4: just kind of going down, and he.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Doesn't want anything. Like we talked about, Josh Allen.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Our guest is here. What what you're pointing to? Our
- 29:39Speaker 2: guest is here? Our guest is here? Which line we
- 29:44Speaker 2: got him on WebEx? Oh yeah, we got it. Okay.
- 29:46Speaker 2: So we're listening to him through the speaker. Okay, make
- 29:49Speaker 2: the speaker loud.
- 29:52Speaker 10: It's still working it out.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah, there we go a little louder, a little louder.
- 29:58Speaker 2: But I can't hear you, Aaron.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Can you hear.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Us, Aaron? No? Okay, we can hear Aaron.
- 30:09Speaker 3: We used to have a desk.
- 30:11Speaker 2: We can hear a microphone here.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 30:18Speaker 2: The difference here is that we're trying to put Aaron
- 30:22Speaker 2: on WebEx so you can see him as well as hearing.
- 30:27Speaker 2: So while we're waiting.
- 30:28Speaker 10: For testing one, two, three, can I hear you? Can
- 30:31Speaker 10: you hear me?
- 30:32Speaker 2: We can hear you. Can you hear us?
- 30:35Speaker 3: This is great radio.
- 30:38Speaker 2: You cannot hear us? Oh okay, all right, all right, Well,
- 30:45Speaker 2: while we're waiting for Aaron to hear us, you hear me?
- 30:48Speaker 10: I'm here.
- 30:50Speaker 2: What What are the some of the things you want
- 30:52Speaker 2: to talk to him about?
- 30:54Speaker 4: Well, I think I'd like to start with the wind projection.
- 30:57Speaker 4: You know, they have seven point one wins and so
- 30:59Speaker 4: they're a little bit you know, optimistic, you know, thoughts
- 31:03Speaker 4: on the afc uh, what direction I see east specifically
- 31:06Speaker 4: what direction you know the Bills and the Dolphins are headed.
- 31:10Speaker 4: And then the big one which I which I highlighted
- 31:11Speaker 4: in there for you, Fred was just there a little bit.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Don't worry about the offensive line, which I think you
- 31:15Speaker 4: know is something that just looking back at the off season,
- 31:18Speaker 4: I think, I look, I'm a borab with what they
- 31:20Speaker 4: did this offseason. Like the only like they took a
- 31:23Speaker 4: swing at Ridley they missed. But the only thing I
- 31:26Speaker 4: really would criticize them for this offseason that I don't
- 31:28Speaker 4: agree with was that they didn't fully address the tackle position.
- 31:31Speaker 4: So I think that's, you know, to me, that's the
- 31:32Speaker 4: big headline is that, you know, why did they think that,
- 31:35Speaker 4: you know, don't worry about it so much. I think
- 31:37Speaker 4: they say it wasn't quite as bad as some people
- 31:39Speaker 4: made it out to be last year. So I mean,
- 31:40Speaker 4: if you're gonna tell me, hope we're getting the thumbs
- 31:42Speaker 4: up from Matt Morrell.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Aaron, can you hear us?
- 31:45Speaker 10: Yes, I can hear you, and can you hear me?
- 31:47Speaker 6: Oh?
- 31:47Speaker 2: Yes, great? Thank you. Sorry about the technical difficulty. So, Aaron,
- 31:50Speaker 2: you're on Patriots Unfiltered with Mike Dusseau, myself, Fred Kersh,
- 31:54Speaker 2: Paul Perrillo, and Evan Lazarre, and so thank you for
- 31:58Speaker 2: doing this first of all. And my initial question is
- 32:01Speaker 2: tell us a little bit about FTN Fantasy and how
- 32:04Speaker 2: you come up with your numbers, because here we're very
- 32:07Speaker 2: familiar with PFF. That's kind of like what we but
- 32:10Speaker 2: he's a DVA. But tell us how you come up
- 32:15Speaker 2: with your predictions and the models that you base it on.
- 32:19Speaker 11: Sure, the DVOA basics during the season is that it
- 32:23Speaker 11: measures the success on every play compared to a league
- 32:27Speaker 11: average baseline adjusted for situation and opponent.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 32:30Speaker 11: What we do for the preseason in the book is
- 32:33Speaker 11: we have a big projection system that looks at performance
- 32:36Speaker 11: over the last three years, certain items that tend to
- 32:40Speaker 11: regress towards the mean, personnel changes, coaching changes. We throw
- 32:45Speaker 11: it all in there to try to predict how well
- 32:47Speaker 11: teams are going to play this year. I mean, there's
- 32:50Speaker 11: a range of possibilities for every team, but we give
- 32:52Speaker 11: you sort of an average output for each team. And
- 32:55Speaker 11: then of course FTN Fantasy also has like a ton
- 32:58Speaker 11: of other stats like Fantasy Projection and the DFS Optimizer
- 33:01Speaker 11: and all kinds of stuff at ftnfantasy dot Com.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Okay, I don't want to hog this, but you have
- 33:09Speaker 2: the Patriots at around seven wins, and I work for
- 33:12Speaker 2: the team, and you might be a game more than
- 33:15Speaker 2: I have them for at this point, Like, tell us
- 33:18Speaker 2: what you're basing that on.
- 33:20Speaker 11: Yeah, we just think they're gonna have a really good defense.
- 33:24Speaker 11: They had a top ten defense last year despite not
- 33:28Speaker 11: being very dependent on turnovers, and they're getting back their
- 33:34Speaker 11: best pass rusher and two of their three best cornerbacks
- 33:39Speaker 11: who basically missed the entire season last year.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Okay, so you're basing it all on defense, but they
- 33:47Speaker 2: only won four games.
- 33:48Speaker 11: Defense should be bad, but we don't think the offense
- 33:51Speaker 11: will be as bad as last year.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so defense stays at least where it was,
- 33:57Speaker 2: if not better because of the guys that coming back,
- 34:00Speaker 2: and offense maybe is a tick better. And you say
- 34:03Speaker 2: that gives in the three extra wins. Do you also
- 34:06Speaker 2: factor in the strength of schedule, because right.
- 34:08Speaker 11: Now they have a hard schedule, so they we would
- 34:11Speaker 11: project more wins if they had an easier schedule. We
- 34:14Speaker 11: have them with the second hardest schedule in the league
- 34:16Speaker 11: behind Buffalo.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Aaron, that was my question for you because I heard
- 34:21Speaker 5: this kicked around and I'm not sure how true it is.
- 34:23Speaker 5: But because Buffalo, the Jets, and the Dolphins are in
- 34:26Speaker 5: the division with the Patriots, they're out of division, schedule
- 34:31Speaker 5: might be a little bit easier than their in division schedule. Like,
- 34:33Speaker 5: how much does that factor into what we're seeing some
- 34:37Speaker 5: of these low win totals. Is just how good the
- 34:39Speaker 5: division is going to be versus maybe they could stack
- 34:42Speaker 5: up some wins outside the division.
- 34:45Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean the NFC West is good, right, they
- 34:48Speaker 11: played the NFC West. That's at least three good teams
- 34:51Speaker 11: in Arizona. We can have arguments about, but I mean,
- 34:55Speaker 11: I think the division plays a large role in how
- 34:58Speaker 11: Vegas sees this team. Right, they see three good teams
- 35:02Speaker 11: in this division, and the Patriots are very clearly fourth,
- 35:05Speaker 11: but they're very clearly fourth because of offense their defense.
- 35:08Speaker 11: I feel their defense should be even better than it
- 35:12Speaker 11: was last year with those players back. And I'll point
- 35:14Speaker 11: out that in our projection system, we gave them an
- 35:17Speaker 11: extra penalty for losing Bill Belichick. We were like, you know,
- 35:22Speaker 11: no team has ever lost Bill Belichick in the last
- 35:25Speaker 11: twelve years, so we don't know what it means, but
- 35:27Speaker 11: we're gonna give them a little bit of an extra penalty,
- 35:29Speaker 11: and we still projected them with one of the best
- 35:31Speaker 11: defenses in the league.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Aaron, I just want to ask you about the offensive line,
- 35:35Speaker 4: which was you know, a point I think all of
- 35:36Speaker 4: us coming into this season we felt that's maybe one
- 35:39Speaker 4: spot that they didn't quite fully address a lot of
- 35:41Speaker 4: questions about right tackles being able to play left tackle.
- 35:45Speaker 4: But you know, in your preview, which I love I
- 35:47Speaker 4: read every year, thank you for it. You know, it
- 35:49Speaker 4: seems like you guys aren't quite as worried just to
- 35:52Speaker 4: read the kind of the last line. It might not
- 35:53Speaker 4: be the best in the league, but it's far from
- 35:55Speaker 4: the worst and not an area for concern in twenty
- 35:57Speaker 4: twenty four. Can you just tell me a little bit about,
- 36:00Speaker 4: you know, what your thoughts on the offensive line here
- 36:02Speaker 4: and how it'll come together.
- 36:03Speaker 11: I mean, I disagree a little bit with Tyler who
- 36:05Speaker 11: wrote the chapter, Tyler Lockner. I do think it is
- 36:07Speaker 11: a concern in twenty twenty four. But the left tackle spot.
- 36:13Speaker 11: The rest of the offensive line looks fine, right. We
- 36:16Speaker 11: know that Mike on Win who is good right, Andrews
- 36:20Speaker 11: Strange and style, that's fine.
- 36:22Speaker 10: It's left tackle that's a big hole.
- 36:24Speaker 11: It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't play Drake
- 36:26Speaker 11: may early is you don't want him to get bad
- 36:28Speaker 11: habits behind the line that has no left tackle. But
- 36:31Speaker 11: I'm not going to pretend that that's not a problem.
- 36:33Speaker 11: It's a problem.
- 36:34Speaker 2: You're mentioning Strange. We don't know right now if Strange
- 36:37Speaker 2: is going to play well.
- 36:39Speaker 10: I wasn't aware that he was dealing with an injury issue.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Well when he played last year. The offensive line I
- 36:45Speaker 3: believe was ranked by a lot of the various metrics
- 36:48Speaker 3: as being one of the worst, if not the worst,
- 36:52Speaker 3: in terms of past block win rate, and Strange was
- 36:55Speaker 3: one of the weaker rated guards when he played. I'm
- 36:58Speaker 3: just curious as to why you think the offense won't
- 37:00Speaker 3: be as bad as it was last year.
- 37:03Speaker 10: Well, I mean the biggest reason is quarterback.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Yeah, right, I.
- 37:07Speaker 11: Mean the quarterback. Let's assume Jacoby Brissett is the quarterback.
- 37:10Speaker 11: Jacoby Brissett. The ceiling and the floor. The ceiling should
- 37:13Speaker 11: be low, but the floor should be higher. Remember, Prissett
- 37:16Speaker 11: had his best year with Alex van Pelt in Cleveland
- 37:21Speaker 11: a couple of years ago. I don't think he's going
- 37:23Speaker 11: to be good, but I gotta think he's going to
- 37:26Speaker 11: be better than what mac Jones was giving them a
- 37:28Speaker 11: year ago.
- 37:29Speaker 10: I agree, and got to think.
- 37:30Speaker 11: The receivers are a little bit better. We don't know
- 37:32Speaker 11: quite what to expect from Polk, but Bourne has always
- 37:35Speaker 11: had good numbers when he's healthy.
- 37:37Speaker 10: I mean Bourne. The ESPN.
- 37:41Speaker 11: Receiver tracking Metrics absolutely loved Bourne a couple of years ago.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Okay, well, Paul, you don't agree with it because you're
- 37:50Speaker 2: looking at it purely on ability, which but I also
- 37:54Speaker 2: look at it as attitude, and I think that's where
- 37:56Speaker 2: Brissett is at.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I just concerns about I think Brissett has been a
- 38:01Speaker 3: productive quarterback in his time.
- 38:03Speaker 2: As a starter.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he's he's any better than Mac Jones. I
- 38:07Speaker 3: think a lot of the things that Aaron just said
- 38:09Speaker 3: about Brissett were would have been things that we said
- 38:11Speaker 3: about You know, the ceiling's not all that high, but.
- 38:14Speaker 2: The floor is.
- 38:15Speaker 3: That's what we said. That's how we talked about mac Jones.
- 38:18Speaker 11: Mac Jones is really a black Swan event though there
- 38:21Speaker 11: have not been other players like mac Jones in history
- 38:24Speaker 11: who were so good as rookies and then just completely
- 38:27Speaker 11: lost their way without blaming injury, like it was horrible
- 38:32Speaker 11: last year. Like, yeah, what we would have predicted going
- 38:35Speaker 11: into last year, We would have never predicted that Jones
- 38:38Speaker 11: would have been as bad.
- 38:38Speaker 2: As he would. No, I know, But Aaron, this is
- 38:40Speaker 2: where I'm gonna push back a little bit on what
- 38:42Speaker 2: you just said. He wasn't you know, because we we
- 38:45Speaker 2: live this thing right right, we're here. He wasn't that
- 38:48Speaker 2: good his rookie year. He was highly highly managed.
- 38:52Speaker 11: Really he was good. He was good for a rookie.
- 38:55Speaker 11: He was good his rookie year. Yes, he wasn't great,
- 38:58Speaker 11: he was not CJS drought his rookie year. No, Butland
- 39:04Speaker 11: team with a good defense, like he was good his
- 39:08Speaker 11: rookie year, and then it just all collapsed. And there's
- 39:12Speaker 11: never been a quarterback like that whose career completely collapsed
- 39:15Speaker 11: after a good year.
- 39:16Speaker 2: How many quarterbacks have the defensive coordinator come over to
- 39:19Speaker 2: be the.
- 39:20Speaker 3: I was challenge to go back and his rookie year,
- 39:23Speaker 3: it's it wasn't as good as people remember. Yeah that
- 39:28Speaker 3: the fall happened before the second year, and people just
- 39:32Speaker 3: didn't see it right right when they started playing good
- 39:35Speaker 3: teams in the second half of the year, that's when.
- 39:37Speaker 2: It kind and he was asked to do more and
- 39:40Speaker 2: he just couldn't do it. He was really harsh.
- 39:42Speaker 11: What he was asked to do he was good at
- 39:44Speaker 11: and then all of a sudden, the next year he
- 39:46Speaker 11: was bad at those things. And then the third year
- 39:48Speaker 11: he was horrible at those things.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I've never been.
- 39:52Speaker 10: A quarterback like that.
- 39:53Speaker 11: Who Like The best comparison I've come up with for
- 39:56Speaker 11: Mac Jones is a receiver Michael Clinton.
- 40:01Speaker 10: Remember Michael Clayton.
- 40:02Speaker 11: Was amazing as a rookie and then completely self destructed.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't know the reasons for Michael Clayton's demise,
- 40:08Speaker 2: but I can tell you that it wasn't all on
- 40:11Speaker 2: field demise for Mac Jones. It was the environment, the
- 40:14Speaker 2: situation he was put in, and his own attitude. I
- 40:17Speaker 2: think it all added.
- 40:18Speaker 11: Up wellde Wise, I gotta think there's a massive improvement
- 40:22Speaker 11: because I've never heard anyone compare about complain about Jacoby
- 40:25Speaker 11: brist We.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Agree with that, we all agree with that. That's why
- 40:29Speaker 2: I think you might be right, Aaron, that the offense
- 40:33Speaker 2: could be a tick better than it was last year
- 40:36Speaker 2: because of that.
- 40:37Speaker 5: I mean, even just on the baseline of not turning
- 40:39Speaker 5: the ball over like crazy like they did last year. Right,
- 40:42Speaker 5: I think Jacoby Brissett's career interception rates like one point
- 40:45Speaker 5: five as a quarterback, and Mac was three point five
- 40:48Speaker 5: last year. So just if he doesn't tend the ball
- 40:50Speaker 5: to the other team, you know, twenty times.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I mean, they're gonna be getting benched and everybody. I mean,
- 40:55Speaker 2: his brain was mush, you know by mid season last.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Year, Aaron, you mentioned the Patriots defense not being you know,
- 41:03Speaker 5: really hung up on turnovers, right, you know, in takeaways,
- 41:07Speaker 5: and that's why you guys project them to be pretty
- 41:10Speaker 5: stable even post Belichick. And you explain that a little
- 41:13Speaker 5: bit more, because I feel like turnovers is probably one
- 41:15Speaker 5: of the most volatile things we have in the sport.
- 41:18Speaker 5: In one year, you get them, in the next year
- 41:19Speaker 5: you might not.
- 41:21Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean exactly what you just said, which is
- 41:23Speaker 11: turnovers are very volatile. And I'm trying to open up
- 41:26Speaker 11: right now to see where the Patriots were in takeaways
- 41:30Speaker 11: per drive last year. The Patriots were the third lowest
- 41:37Speaker 11: defense in the league last year in takeaways per drive,
- 41:40Speaker 11: and that tends to regress towards the mean, which means
- 41:43Speaker 11: you can expect more takeaways. And this is a defense
- 41:46Speaker 11: that was ninth in the league by DVOA without getting
- 41:50Speaker 11: a lot of takeaways, and suddenly you expect them to
- 41:53Speaker 11: get an average number of takeaways. And you add in
- 41:56Speaker 11: Judean and you add in Gonzales and I don't exactly
- 41:59Speaker 11: know what Marcus Owns means as a defender, but you
- 42:01Speaker 11: add him to and it just this should be one
- 42:04Speaker 11: of the top defenses in the league. The offense will
- 42:09Speaker 11: be bad.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Eric, Just how hard was it for you guys this
- 42:12Speaker 4: year to really look at this offense. I mean, you
- 42:14Speaker 4: mentioned Bill Belichick leaving. It's unprecedented to lose a coach
- 42:17Speaker 4: of that magnitude, certainly here. How hard was it kind
- 42:20Speaker 4: of putting this all together, looking at the Alex van Pelt,
- 42:23Speaker 4: the Jacoby Brisaid, and then you know, adding in Drake May,
- 42:25Speaker 4: who we haven't even really talked about.
- 42:28Speaker 11: I mean, I don't think it was that hard compared
- 42:30Speaker 11: I mean, compared to other teams. Listen, it's it's you
- 42:32Speaker 11: just have to accept to start out with that you
- 42:35Speaker 11: cannot project rookie quarterbacks very well, and you cannot project
- 42:39Speaker 11: them to be good. The average performance of a rookie
- 42:41Speaker 11: quarterback is going to be bad. But sometimes you're going
- 42:44Speaker 11: to get Bryce Young and sometimes you're gonna get CJ. Stroud.
- 42:48Speaker 11: But I don't expect Drake Made to play that much.
- 42:50Speaker 11: So when we did our projections for Minnesota and New England,
- 42:54Speaker 11: we expected that this quarterback positions would be split between
- 42:57Speaker 11: two guys. Whereas for Washington and Chica and Denver, we
- 43:01Speaker 11: expect the rookie to play the whole year, and for Atlanta,
- 43:04Speaker 11: we don't expect the rookie.
- 43:05Speaker 2: To play at all, So, let me ask you a question.
- 43:07Speaker 2: I'm just curious, why don't you expect May to play
- 43:10Speaker 2: that much this year?
- 43:12Speaker 11: Because I think that they feel like he's I mean,
- 43:15Speaker 11: he's the youngest of these quarterbacks who came out last year.
- 43:19Speaker 11: I think they feel like he needs more development time.
- 43:22Speaker 11: I think they got perseet to be a bridge quarterback.
- 43:26Speaker 11: Certainly they have a better bridge quarterback than Chicago does.
- 43:30Speaker 10: I mean, we can talk.
- 43:30Speaker 11: About whether Mariota would be a good bridge quarterback if
- 43:33Speaker 11: Washington for some reason didn't want to play Daniels. But
- 43:36Speaker 11: Chicago has no bridge quarterbacks, so of course they're playing
- 43:39Speaker 11: their rookie. And Denver doesn't really have one, so of
- 43:42Speaker 11: course they're playing their rookie. But New England has one.
- 43:45Speaker 11: They don't have to get May right out there right away.
- 43:48Speaker 11: If he impresses in camp and they feel like that's
- 43:51Speaker 11: the best thing for the team, they can do it.
- 43:53Speaker 10: But I would worry.
- 43:54Speaker 11: About having him behind that offensive line for a whole season.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Okay A lot of people share that sentiment. Yeah, all right, anything.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Else, guys, No, thanks, thanks for Aaron.
- 44:04Speaker 2: We appreciate you calling in, and maybe you know we'll
- 44:06Speaker 2: have you on a little later. In the season to
- 44:08Speaker 2: kind of recalibrate what we're talking about.
- 44:11Speaker 10: But for that, I'm right, they're five and seven.
- 44:15Speaker 2: For the record, I hope you're right about the defense.
- 44:18Speaker 11: I mean, I just think the defense is going to
- 44:20Speaker 11: be really good, but I'm not I don't.
- 44:22Speaker 10: That doesn't mean we think the offense will be good.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. Aaron Shatz of FT in Fantasy, Thanks.
- 44:30Speaker 10: Aaron, all right, have a good day on it.
- 44:32Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Thanks Aaron.
- 44:33Speaker 2: All right, that's Aaron shats good stuff for conversations.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel like you said a lot
- 44:40Speaker 5: of the same things about the defense that we've all
- 44:42Speaker 5: been saying, which is on paper that they should be
- 44:45Speaker 5: a very good defense and we'll see how much of
- 44:47Speaker 5: an impact Bill not being here really makes. But talent wise,
- 44:51Speaker 5: they should be somewhere in the top five to ten
- 44:54Speaker 5: defenses in the league.
- 44:55Speaker 4: I just think the elephant in the room of that
- 44:56Speaker 4: whole thing is is this all going to work out
- 44:58Speaker 4: with Jude on? Is judn't going to be around? Jude
- 45:00Speaker 4: not going to be that same pass rusher at thirty
- 45:03Speaker 4: two that we came to expect of him two years
- 45:04Speaker 4: you know, Like that's the big question as far as that.
- 45:07Speaker 4: I mean, I expect Gonzalez will be good. I mean
- 45:09Speaker 4: he mentioned Marcus Jones. I'm the same. I don't know
- 45:11Speaker 4: where he's going to end up.
- 45:13Speaker 2: If he's but even just Jonathan Jones back, you lost
- 45:16Speaker 2: him for a good portion of last.
- 45:17Speaker 3: Years banged up to Yeah, he played last year. Well,
- 45:22Speaker 3: Marcus Jones missed the hard.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Marcus wasn't Jonathan Jones in and out like he was just.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Always on the injury or it was something and it
- 45:28Speaker 4: was always.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Usually I think even like I thought it was kind
- 45:33Speaker 3: of interesting the way he said they're getting two of
- 45:35Speaker 3: the of their best three corners back. Okay, well that
- 45:40Speaker 3: is how good is that?
- 45:41Speaker 6: Like?
- 45:42Speaker 2: But it's better than last year?
- 45:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, but I don't know if that. I
- 45:46Speaker 3: don't know if Marcus Jones moved the ne for me
- 45:48Speaker 3: defensively now in terms of as a returner off the charts,
- 45:53Speaker 3: as a potential gadget guy on offense off the charts,
- 45:56Speaker 3: he was great right when he did that as a rookie.
- 45:59Speaker 3: So in terms of that kind of stuff, big impact
- 46:02Speaker 3: player to get back, I'm not sure it's a big
- 46:05Speaker 3: impact guy to get back in the secondary. Maybe he
- 46:07Speaker 3: will be, Maybe he's that much better in the slot
- 46:11Speaker 3: this year in year three, and that allows you to
- 46:13Speaker 3: sort of do some different things. Maybe Alex Austin factors
- 46:17Speaker 3: into the secondary double a. Yeah, well another creative nickname.
- 46:21Speaker 3: Maybe that factors into the equation and that sort of
- 46:25Speaker 3: deepens your secondary a little bit.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:27Speaker 5: Another interesting note I was reading through this was just
- 46:29Speaker 5: their split of pressure on first and second down versus
- 46:32Speaker 5: third down. So we were talking about this last week,
- 46:35Speaker 5: I think. But when they were able to cook up pressure,
- 46:38Speaker 5: whether it was with blitzes or different disguise or whatever,
- 46:41Speaker 5: they were able to get home. But just a four
- 46:43Speaker 5: man pass rush on first down, they were not very effective.
- 46:46Speaker 5: And when you're not effective in the pass rush, you're
- 46:49Speaker 5: not disrupting the quarterback. You're not going to create turnovers
- 46:52Speaker 5: because there's no disruption on the QB. So that's where
- 46:55Speaker 5: Judon comes into this whole thing. It's not just the sacks.
- 46:57Speaker 5: It's the fact that if they can be more disruptive
- 47:00Speaker 5: on early downs and get after the quarterback, that's when
- 47:03Speaker 5: the snowball of turnovers usually starts to happen.
- 47:05Speaker 4: I'd tie that into Godshaw too, you know a little bit.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Just I mean terms of early down you talk about.
- 47:09Speaker 4: I mean, I've talked about this forever that I've been
- 47:12Speaker 4: into the Patriots and into defenses. When you're gonna play
- 47:15Speaker 4: so much too gapping, you're never getting penetration on early downs,
- 47:18Speaker 4: so there's not going to really be any disruption going on.
- 47:21Speaker 4: So if people want to throw on first down against you,
- 47:23Speaker 4: and I think last year was a big one like that. Now,
- 47:25Speaker 4: I don't know if they're going to shift away. I mean,
- 47:27Speaker 4: I know why they like Godshaw, but I think that
- 47:29Speaker 4: that's part of why they're not that great against the
- 47:32Speaker 4: pass on first down is they like to play big.
- 47:33Speaker 4: They like to, you know, make sure they're stopping the run.
- 47:35Speaker 4: But I think they're susceptible.
- 47:37Speaker 2: All right, So we'll stop here, take a break. When

- 48:58Speaker 2: What's up, everybody?
- 48:59Speaker 7: Mattie here, Let's listen to a snippet from the latest
- 49:01Speaker 7: episode of Pats from the Past with Matt Castle.
- 49:03Speaker 12: It's time for another episode of Pats from the Past podcast.
- 49:06Speaker 12: Matt Smith here alongside with Papaolo when we were pleased
- 49:08Speaker 12: to be joined by former Patriots quarterback Matt Castle. Matt,
- 49:12Speaker 12: thanks for joining us.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Absolutely glad to be here. Why are you here, Matt?
- 49:15Speaker 2: What would bring you back.
- 49:16Speaker 9: To What would bring me back to the Foxborough is
- 49:19Speaker 9: not just the people, the fans, but it's the tribute,
- 49:22Speaker 9: Let's be honest, it's the tribute the retirement ceremony for
- 49:25Speaker 9: Tom Brady. And you know, it was an incredible start
- 49:28Speaker 9: to the ceremonies last night when we all got together,
- 49:30Speaker 9: a bunch of teammates, old teammates and familiar faces coming back.
- 49:34Speaker 9: So we had a blast last night. We're looking to
- 49:36Speaker 9: continue it tonight.
- 49:37Speaker 12: You're a busy man with a big family, with a
- 49:39Speaker 12: lot of responsibilities and everything like that, so it's not
- 49:43Speaker 12: the easiest thing to sort of I'm going to drop
- 49:45Speaker 12: everything I'm doing. But was it and I'm sure so,
- 49:48Speaker 12: I mean, I don't want he answer it for you. Challenging,
- 49:51Speaker 12: but was it an easy decision to make that I
- 49:53Speaker 12: wanted to be here.
- 49:54Speaker 9: It was challenging, but it was definitely an easy decision
- 49:56Speaker 9: to make. I mean, Tom's a close friend of mine.
- 49:59Speaker 9: He's played an important role in my development when I
- 50:03Speaker 9: was young, and throughout the years we've stayed close and
- 50:05Speaker 9: just the fact that we get an opportunity to celebrate
- 50:08Speaker 9: him tonight and send him send him out in the
- 50:11Speaker 9: proper fashion, and it'll be it'll be a fun, fun
- 50:13Speaker 9: experience for everybody.
- 50:15Speaker 3: You talked about the event that you did on Tuesday night,
- 50:18Speaker 3: any particular teammate that maybe you hadn't seen and you're like, wow,
- 50:22Speaker 3: it was great to catch out. I'm sure there were
- 50:24Speaker 3: a lot of them, but that one individual that stood out.
- 50:27Speaker 9: You know, there's not one individual. The cool part about
- 50:29Speaker 9: it is the thing that you missed Motes, and we
- 50:31Speaker 9: talked about this is when you leave the game, you
- 50:34Speaker 9: miss that locker room. And you had Logan Mankins, Matt Lay,
- 50:38Speaker 9: Dan Cope and Lonnie Pax and Kevin Fox, Dion Branch,
- 50:42Speaker 9: all these guys that you've had these incredible experiences with
- 50:45Speaker 9: and we played together, we competed together. But to come
- 50:48Speaker 9: back all and get into one room and be able
- 50:51Speaker 9: to see those guys and pick up where we left
- 50:53Speaker 9: off and tell funny stories and old jokes, that's what
- 50:56Speaker 9: it's all about, and that it's the camaraderie that you
- 51:00Speaker 9: really don't experience in other walks of life, but you
- 51:03Speaker 9: do in that locker room, and so it's pretty unique.
- 51:06Speaker 12: All right, let's start where it started in two thousand
- 51:08Speaker 12: and five, and here's a guy who played one of
- 51:11Speaker 12: the best programs in all college football. You didn't get
- 51:14Speaker 12: a chance to play a lot. What were your what realistically, Matt,
- 51:19Speaker 12: did you think was going to happen as you entered
- 51:21Speaker 12: the draft that year.
- 51:22Speaker 9: Honestly, I was just hoping to catch on as a
- 51:25Speaker 9: free agent and prove myself, maybe even get in a practice,
- 51:29Speaker 9: because my expectations were, Hey, if I can get in,
- 51:32Speaker 9: hopefully I can get a chance to prove myself. And
- 51:35Speaker 9: throughout the process, I had a good pro day and
- 51:37Speaker 9: all that stuff, and I had some workouts for about
- 51:39Speaker 9: five different teams, and I just thought, you know, there
- 51:42Speaker 9: is potential here that I will be a free agent somewhere.
- 51:45Speaker 9: And then all of a sudden, that last day of
- 51:47Speaker 9: the draft, I get a phone call. I was sitting
- 51:49Speaker 9: down at my agency's like, look, free agency is going
- 51:51Speaker 9: to happen quick. We got to be prepared. We're getting fucked.
- 51:54Speaker 9: We're started to field some phone calls from different teams,
- 51:56Speaker 9: and next thing, I know, Coach Belichick's on the line
- 51:59Speaker 9: and saying, hey, Matt, welcome to the New England Patriots.
- 52:02Speaker 9: We're going to take you next in the NFL Draft,
- 52:04Speaker 9: and my jawge is dropped. I kind of even had
- 52:06Speaker 9: to ask him, are you messing with me? Because I
- 52:08Speaker 9: didn't think it was realistic, right, I mean, for a
- 52:11Speaker 9: guy that threw I think it was thirty two total
- 52:13Speaker 9: passes in college, I backed up to Heisman Trophy winners,
- 52:16Speaker 9: which probably you know, kind of helped me along the
- 52:18Speaker 9: way in terms of the perception of who I could
- 52:21Speaker 9: potentially be.
- 52:21Speaker 2: But there wasn't any tape out there.
- 52:23Speaker 9: And so the fact that they took a shot on
- 52:25Speaker 9: me and gave me an opportunity, I would be forever,
- 52:28Speaker 9: forever grateful.
- 52:29Speaker 3: So when you got drafted, you know, I was. We
- 52:31Speaker 3: were still doing the newspaper back then, Matt, That's how
- 52:33Speaker 3: long ago it was. But you know, I had your
- 52:36Speaker 3: draft profile that year, and I called Pete Carroll, who
- 52:40Speaker 3: was the head coach here my first year working for
- 52:43Speaker 3: Patriots dot Com, and I talked to Pete a little
- 52:45Speaker 3: bit and he gushed about how agonizing the decision was
- 52:50Speaker 3: between you and Matt Leiner and how you guys had
- 52:52Speaker 3: sort of toggled back and forth, and you know, depending
- 52:55Speaker 3: on the day that he woke up, he was convinced
- 52:57Speaker 3: you with the guy right, and then it was him
- 53:00Speaker 3: was you? And do you think that maybe Pete talked
- 53:03Speaker 3: to a lot of NFL guys, maybe with his obviously
- 53:06Speaker 3: extensive experience, and maybe that sort of helped give you
- 53:08Speaker 3: a little bit of a push.
- 53:09Speaker 9: I absolutely think he had an influence on just the
- 53:13Speaker 9: ability to know so many different people from a personnel standpoint,
- 53:17Speaker 9: and then at the same time, I remember on the
- 53:19Speaker 9: pro day, before we started our pro day, he would
- 53:22Speaker 9: go in and speak to all the scouts individually about
- 53:25Speaker 9: each guy, and so I know that we always had
- 53:28Speaker 9: a good relationship. And as agonizing as it was for him,
- 53:31Speaker 9: it was more agonizing for me to sit there and
- 53:33Speaker 9: have to wait and say, you know, I can't the
- 53:36Speaker 9: week before season getting called into that office and getting
- 53:40Speaker 9: the devastating news that what you've been working for, you've
- 53:42Speaker 9: been the backup for three years behind Carson. This was
- 53:45Speaker 9: I felt like it was my time to go. And
- 53:47Speaker 9: then to be told, look, we're going to go with
- 53:49Speaker 9: line Art to start, but if he falters it all
- 53:51Speaker 9: and you know, he took off that first game with
- 53:53Speaker 9: like a rocket ship and we go beat Auburn. And
- 53:56Speaker 9: then I was like, man, what am I going to do?
- 53:58Speaker 9: So I stuck playing. I went and switched over, played
- 54:00Speaker 9: a little tight end that year, played on special teams,
- 54:02Speaker 9: did all these different things just because I wanted to
- 54:05Speaker 9: play and be a part of it. But I was
- 54:06Speaker 9: kind of stuck in that catch twenty.
- 54:07Speaker 3: That's why Belichick drafted. Yeah, He's like, maybe he'll be
- 54:10Speaker 3: on special team.
- 54:11Speaker 2: The more you can do, right, the more you can.
- 54:13Speaker 12: Do Okay, So you're here ostensibly. You know, it helped
- 54:16Speaker 12: celebrate Tom's career, and so one of the big things
- 54:18Speaker 12: that has happened throughout the years, or rookie comes in,
- 54:21Speaker 12: you're in the room with him.
- 54:23Speaker 2: You know, what was your first impression when you met Tom?
- 54:25Speaker 9: You know, I pretty much introduced myself in the weakest,
- 54:29Speaker 9: nerdiest form and fashion when he came up. I said,
- 54:31Speaker 9: mister Brady Matt Castle. Because you know, it's an intimidating environment, right,
- 54:35Speaker 9: and this guy just came off three Super Bowls.
- 54:37Speaker 2: You don't know how to like Normally you go up
- 54:39Speaker 2: and say, hey, what's going on?
- 54:40Speaker 4: Man?
- 54:40Speaker 9: Nice to meet you. I just completely geeked out with
- 54:44Speaker 9: a mister Brady and he's like, hey, Bud, don't call
- 54:46Speaker 9: me that, call me Tommy. I was like, he might
- 54:48Speaker 9: have me cut tomorrow based on the fact that he
- 54:51Speaker 9: doesn't want to be in the room with somebody like that.
- 54:53Speaker 9: But no, he was incredible from the jump. I mean
- 54:56Speaker 9: we got in there, and then soon thereafter, as we
- 54:58Speaker 9: started to get into the work out that offseason, he's
- 55:02Speaker 9: noticed that, Look, I was one of those workout warriors too.
- 55:05Speaker 9: I like to go in there. I like to work out,
- 55:06Speaker 9: and he's like, hey, you want to work out with me.
- 55:08Speaker 9: So he kind of took me under his wing at
- 55:09Speaker 9: that point, and from that point on for the next
- 55:12Speaker 9: four years, we worked out every day with each other.
- 55:14Speaker 2: We were in every meeting.
- 55:15Speaker 9: But for me, it was just incredible to watch the
- 55:19Speaker 9: professionalism day in and day out, and his leadership. And
- 55:23Speaker 9: it was not just with his words, but it was
- 55:25Speaker 9: with his actions. It's how he took care of himself,
- 55:28Speaker 9: it's how he interacted with his teammates, how he treated
- 55:31Speaker 9: one guy because he thought he could get the most
- 55:33Speaker 9: out of this guy, like Welker, for instance, he could
- 55:35Speaker 9: yell at him all day long, and Welker would just
- 55:37Speaker 9: continue to go, you know, and then there's other guys
- 55:40Speaker 9: that maybe like a rainy Moss that he'd sit there
- 55:42Speaker 9: in the locker after practice and just have a general
- 55:44Speaker 9: discussion about stuff because how he approached people was different
- 55:49Speaker 9: based on their personality and the relationships. So it was
- 55:53Speaker 9: just a masterclass in being a professional quarterback. And then
- 55:57Speaker 9: to watch what he did week in and week out
- 55:59Speaker 9: was just so you.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Get to be part of that room with, you know,
- 56:03Speaker 3: the best that's ever done it, and you also get
- 56:05Speaker 3: to be coached by a guy who a lot of
- 56:08Speaker 3: people think is the best who's ever done it. What
- 56:10Speaker 3: do you remember about Bill specifically? But and I know,
- 56:13Speaker 3: Matt and I tell talk about that story that I
- 56:16Speaker 3: think you talked about in the Dynasty documentary about him
- 56:19Speaker 3: calling your mom.
- 56:20Speaker 9: Oh yeah, right about being a dumb ass because I
- 56:24Speaker 9: missed the corner blitz that was my rookie year. Yeah,
- 56:27Speaker 9: it was the last preseason game. I didn't see the
- 56:29Speaker 9: week corner blitz, which hey, they were pretty sneaky about it.
- 56:32Speaker 9: This guy's as well, but he definitely called me out
- 56:35Speaker 9: in the meeting the next day. He's like, you know, Matt,
- 56:38Speaker 9: let's make sure we go through the fronts and check
- 56:40Speaker 9: the corner blitz. I don't have to call your mom
- 56:42Speaker 9: and tell our dear missus Castle, we're sorry your son's
- 56:44Speaker 9: in the hospital because he's a dumb ass.
- 56:47Speaker 2: And for the whole tear, I was like, yep, I
- 56:49Speaker 2: deserve that one. But Bill, Bill was.
- 56:53Speaker 9: He was incredible because he pushed you to limits that
- 56:55Speaker 9: you didn't know that you could go, and he got
- 56:57Speaker 9: the best out of each of his players. But I
- 56:58Speaker 9: always respected about Bill was he had you better prepared
- 57:02Speaker 9: for any situation situationally speaking, also just game readiness then
- 57:06Speaker 9: I've ever been around. And part of that was even
- 57:09Speaker 9: on Tuesdays, taking the time out of his day. On
- 57:11Speaker 9: a Tuesday or off day, we'd come in, we'd meet
- 57:13Speaker 9: with him and you've probably heard the story. We sit down,
- 57:16Speaker 9: go through every personnel and their defensive back end, safeties,
- 57:20Speaker 9: corner strengths, weaknesses, summarize who they are, then even maybe
- 57:24Speaker 9: a potential matchup on linebackers, talk about the defensive coordinator
- 57:28Speaker 9: and also his lineage and where it came from. Then
- 57:32Speaker 9: we'd watch film on all these guys. So by the
- 57:34Speaker 9: time you came in on Wednesday, you're rolling. You understand
- 57:37Speaker 9: why we're implementing certain past schemes and concepts, who we're
- 57:42Speaker 9: trying to attack on specific routes, who are trying to
- 57:44Speaker 9: take advantage of And so you just had this, You
- 57:47Speaker 9: had this confidence going into game week understanding why we're
- 57:51Speaker 9: doing certain things, and there was.
- 57:52Speaker 2: Never that wait, what are we doing?
- 57:56Speaker 9: And if there was, it was answered right and so.
- 58:00Speaker 9: And the other thing I always appreciated about Bill was
- 58:02Speaker 9: he he was always held everybody to the same standard
- 58:06Speaker 9: of accountability.
- 58:07Speaker 13: When someone accidentally threw away the school play costumes, oh No,
- 58:12Speaker 13: replacements were shipped with FedEx and with picture proof of delivery,
- 58:15Speaker 13: everyone could focus on the perfect opening night FedEx Where
- 58:19Speaker 13: now it's next for residential delivery only.
- 58:24Speaker 3: And now great moments in.
- 58:28Speaker 2: History. My father had a hardware store in Brooklyn, Okay,
- 58:33Speaker 2: in the city, and I'd go in there and work.
- 58:35Speaker 2: When I was a little kid, first grade, they put
- 58:37Speaker 2: me on the subway to get sandwiches for people, and
- 58:41Speaker 2: I go to this place that they you know, and
- 58:44Speaker 2: I'd go get the sandwiches for everybody and bring them back.
- 58:47Speaker 2: First grader on the subway by myself with money in
- 58:49Speaker 2: my pocket.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I mean, that's great. That tops me. You know that
- 58:54Speaker 3: tops me.
- 58:54Speaker 2: It's like you would never do that now and I
- 58:57Speaker 2: can understand that, but back then you could do it.
- 59:00Speaker 4: You went from all that to East Dennis. It was
- 59:02Speaker 4: that a was not a crazy transition for you, going
- 59:04Speaker 4: from like a city to living in the middle of nowhere.
- 59:06Speaker 2: No. No, he worked in the city. We lived in
- 59:08Speaker 2: the suburbs of New Jersey.
- 59:11Speaker 4: Yeah, knowing how dead it is down there. The subway
- 59:15Speaker 4: didn't always have a great reputation back then either. Though.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Oh maybe my father didn't like me. I don't know,
- 59:22Speaker 2: but maybe he won't come home off the hook. That's
- 59:28Speaker 2: another great moment from all right back here and Patriot's Unfiltered.
- 59:33Speaker 2: We talked to Aaron Shatz in the last segment. We
- 59:36Speaker 2: talked about Gerd Mayo's press conference and all the other players.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Now we're going to talk to you. Eight five five
- 59:41Speaker 2: past five hundred is the ACE ticket houtline, web radio
- 59:45Speaker 2: at patriot dot com is the email address. Let's get
- 59:48Speaker 2: to those phones and emails. We'll start it off with uh,
- 59:52Speaker 2: Eldred in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred? Hey, we're doing good.
- 59:59Speaker 2: How about you?
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: I'm doing good. I was just wanna do a big
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: shout out to mister Legend. Happy birthday today, buddy whose
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: birthday is? We have many more John John Rook.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: Okay, John Rook, Happy birthday. Step inside the playbook book tomorrow,
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Right's playbook will be here tomorrow, our broadcaster, Happy birthday. Yeah,
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: I was not aware of tomorrow. And you want tomorrow?
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: Well, y'all, y'all touched on a little bit. But I
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: was wondering because I saw yesterday in the NFL network.
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: I've got the guy's name. But this is about are
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: you and saying how much? How much Wolf wanted him
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: and still want them? You're right, I stuck around with
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: draft pickures that they're gonna pay him twenty eight to
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: twenty nine million a year. But it's all on San
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: Francisco tomorrow. We're in the leading, we're the lead hunt
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: for it.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: So what do y'all think?
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: And I take it off the air, you'll have a
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: good day, man.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Thanks. Yeah, So would you do that if you're the
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Patriots second round? Second absolutely and paid that much money,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Well that's not up to me, but I wouldn't pay it, No, Yeah,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I would.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: I would let robber Craft pay that money take.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: I'd let him pay more, like I feel like with
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: Brandon Aiyuk. I keep going back to the aj Brown
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: trade from Tennessee to the Philly, which was a first
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: and a third round pick, but a mid first round pick.
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: There was eighteenth overall in one on one overall, and
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: a second round pick is just not it's not getting
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: you there, like you need to add more than just
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: a second round pick to it. But if it's a
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: second this year, or maybe this is the twenty twenty
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: five draft now we're talking about, and it's a second
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: and a fourth or something like that, that gets you
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: closer to that compensation.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: About a conditional second. So if he does something it
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: turns into a first.
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: Yeah, you could do that.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: I mean, now that's top ten pick, yeah right, it
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: could be.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: Well, just to be clear that I've gotten asked this question,
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: I looked into it. You can't do what they do
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: in the NBA, where picks are protected based off of
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: where you finish in the standings. So the Patriots can't
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: trade their twenty twenty five first round pick top five protected.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: So if it's a fourth overall pick, then have kicks
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: to next year or something like that. Like they do
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: in the NBA, those trades don't happen. So Brandon Iyuk,
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: if he makes Pro Bowl honors, if he's an a thousand
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: yard receiver, you could do all those types of things
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: with the conditions. But it can't be conditioned on the
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: Patriots winning seven games like it has to be conditioned
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: on the player.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: I think you know the money aside, and I know
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: that's a big deal. But if Brandon Ayuk right now
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: was available in the draft somehow he could go back
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: and be eligible for the draft, wouldn't he be a
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: first round pick?
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: He was a first round pick when he came out
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: of a.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: First round pick when yeah, so what he said?
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: So, I mean, you know, now, like if you're the Patriots,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: isn't that much of a leap to say, yeah, I
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: give him, I give them a first round pick and
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I would pay the money.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: It all depends on how good you think he makes you.
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: If he makes you a middle of the pack team
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: and that first round pick is now the thirteenth overall
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: pick instead of the third overall pick, then that's a
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: different conversation.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: But if you're still going to stay and everybody would
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: sign up for that.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: But again, let's look at let's project next year's draft,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: and of course we don't know. There's always guys that
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: have great years and all of a sudden they rise up.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: But right now, wouldn't he be a top six pick
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: in next year's drafting if you could somehow magically make
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: him eligible for the draft?
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Probably, I mean, because now you know how good he is.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: But it's not even a leak.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: That's not how it works.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: It's not how it works. But you know, would he.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: Be a top six pick four years from now when
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: that whole class had three years of NFL experience? I
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: don't know, but you.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Do know about Ayuk. But you know what I'm saying.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: You know, Ayuk is a really good player, right, But
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: he's four years in the league.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: That's why you know he's a good player.
- 1:03:47Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: So what I'm saying this is fantasy.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: World, but you're comparing them against guys that have never
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: played yet.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I get it, But that's my point.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Do you want to give up a top ten pick?
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: That's my point. I'm just I'm just throwing this out there.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: So how about this?
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Okay, dude, do you understand what I'm saying? I do.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: I totally understand what you're saying.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: You're right.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: I think everything you said is right. I wish I
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: could argue, but this is not conducive to arguing.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: I told you you just relast.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: See, I need to purpose. We need to get back
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: on purpose to put you at a disadvanced How.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: About if you know and I we talked a lot
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: about the thing that Evan just mentioned about. You can't
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: protect the picks, but you can't put it into the future.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: You know, would it be possible to say, a twenty
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: twenty six first round pick, whereas now Gerrod Mao and
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: Elliott Wolf have two full years to sort of get
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: out of the top ten of the draft. Yeah, you know,
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: like you should not be expecting to pick in the
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: top ten two years from.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Now, right, But the forty nine ers know that too.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: No, I understand that.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: But like if it's a second and twenty twenty five,
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: in the first in twenty twenty six, or okay, third
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: and the first, or something sweeten.
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: The other thing a lot of people have thrown in
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: there is like Judon is a sweetener. I don't think
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: that that is much of a sweetener for for the
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: Niners unless you get into camp and things happen, you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: maybe Nick Bosa gets hurt.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: Or well, they don't have somebody quite they don't have
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: a definitive starter opposite and right young last year, and yeah.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: So let's let's play this game. We go through this
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: season and Drake May is the guy. He's proven in
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: the last ten games that he played he's going to
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: be the guy. And now push I you to next year? Now,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: would you pay the King's ransom to get him? Because
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: now you know you got to?
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: Yeah, but now like that, but now he's now he's
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: in a franchise tag year, probably with the forty nine ers,
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: So the whole trade equation changes.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: I'm just saying, conditions are the same, except that now
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: you know Drake May's going to be a good quarter, I.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: Go all in as a free agent for for him. Absolutely.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: If he hits, he's not going to hit. And he
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: hits the market, yeah, he's going to be tagged. Yeah,
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: and then you're trading him on tag if you're the Niners,
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: which means you're gonna get less than if you're trading
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: him now just inherently you're gonna get less. But I
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: just feel like with him, it just comes down to
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: your point. Like the Houston Texans, they played a year
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: with c J. Stroud and Tank Dell and Nico Collins
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: and they made the playoffs and won a playoff game,
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: had a great year, and then they made the Stefon
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: Diggs trade this offseason to add him to the repertoire.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: So it's like if Jalen Polk and Javon Baker are
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: two good players and then next offseason you're adding Ayuke.
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: That's the ideal situation. But the problem is is that
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: if Auk hits unrestricted free agency, what you won't So
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: maybe using T Higgins as better Now you have to
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: compete with the whole rest of the league. So now
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: you have to be a more appealing spot for T
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: Higgins to sign, just like we had with Calvin Ridley
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: this offseason. So in order to make that happen, the
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: Patriots have to exceed expectations and then some and be
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: an attractive destination for a free agency.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: You're talking me into not doing the Ayuke deal. You're
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: you're talking me into waiting a year and then go
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: full bore because may it may not be Ayuku's available,
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: but there will be somebody of the Higgins Metcalf.
- 1:07:12Speaker 14: I don't think.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: Higgins as good as.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: He's not as good as I, but he's really good. Yeah,
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: but he's a better player.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: Historically speaking, that's the way that teams have done it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: It's either been going into year two or year three
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: for the quarterback Buffalo with Diggs, Philly with A J.
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: Brown Tyreek in Tua, like that's usually the year. It's
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: not the rookie season for that.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: So would it have been a mistake or regrettable if
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: they had gotten Calvin Ridley?
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: No, I don't think so.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: No, you know, I just think those those guys are
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: only available at certain times and if you've got the
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: space and the money to do it, then you got
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: to take a swing on him. But you're you're your
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: hypothetical has got me thinking of like, where would you
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: stack Ayuk against last year's class with Harrison Nabors and
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: a Duneesa.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: Well, again, are we comparing him when he came out?
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: No, you're doing we're playing pat comparing apples and or
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: I know, but you're just one's a known commodity. Everybody
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: else isn't. But that's that's my point is you know
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: he's good now so, but why not give up?
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: But what you're trying to project is what Mike just said.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: If you were in a class with those three guys
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: that just went in the top fifteen picks, top nine pick,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: top nine picks, would he be considered the best of
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: those those four players? No, Harrison neighbors in a dudn't say,
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: not even close, not even closer coming out of college.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no, what he is? Now?
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: Why do it?
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: Why are we doing it that way?
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: We're doing it that way. See Paul's going back here.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: I'm saying the twenty twenty five draft. You know die
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: is but just like this, but you don't really how
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: good they're going to be. I don't.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: I don't know that, and I know how is correct.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: But if you think the guys that are coming in
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: are going to be better than that, I wouldn't do it.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: This is what I'm trying to explain to you. That's
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: the trick I guess baseball. Anybody can say.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: I'm not going to It's the bird in the hand.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: You have to identify which guys you think are going
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: to be better.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: But but but in my scenario, I know ayuk is
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: is that good. So I don't have to guess. I'm
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna give a first round pick for a first
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: round and you can do it that way. It makes
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: total sense. But what Evan's trying to tell trying to say,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: and I definitely.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Agree with you, I'm so confused he's trying to tell you,
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Marvin Harrison Roman.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: But he's going back here. I'm not going to pay.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: But there are gonna be three guys just like that
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: in this draft, because that's the draft in the last
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: ten years.
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: Until you see Luther has.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: You have to decide, do you think those guys coming
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: out next year will be better players than Brandon Ayuk?
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Is right nex from Marvin Harrison. I think I still
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: would pick Ayuk if I knew how good he's gonna be.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: I would take a Yuk over all of them, because
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: he's a top ten receiver in the league.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Okay, so now you're making my point.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's not how it makes.
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: Some of them might be top three, but Marvin Harrison
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: might be the best receiver in the league.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: In your in your opinion, you would do that because
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: you'll take in the known commodity. The trick for the
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: decision makers, the personnel guys is to identify who they
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: think is the better player, not today, who will be
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: the better player. Well, I'm just so if you think
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: that he's better than neighbors in Adunze, no one's here
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: to tell you you're wrong. But Evan thinks all three
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: of those guys are going to be better players than you.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: You know, go up one step. I don't think if
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: it's Justin Jefferson, it's a no brainer, right Well yeah, yeah, I.
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: Mean I have to give you credit. You were on
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: the Jefferson.
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: If it was anybody that's currently in the league at
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: this stature, then they're all better than the prospect.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: But we don't know what any of those souls. But
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: let's just go back and this is what I'm trying
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: to talk about. And in the recent past, it's it's
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson. Yeah, it's c Dee Lamb. You know, there's
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: a lot of great receivers. But but Jamar Chase, it's
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: not just Marvin Harrison. No, I get all these guys
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: are better than Don't you.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Think every personnel director would love to pick a guy
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: who they already know is great?
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: But would they would they forfeit a chance to get
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: a guy who's better. That's the trick.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: It's yes, I think they would. I think they would
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: take I wouldn't. I think they would take the If
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: I can get Justin Jefferson, knowing that how he is,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: I would take him over the.
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: Guest Justin Jefferson. Yes, that's not Brandon.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: You mentioned Jamar Chase, you mentioned all these guys.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: All of those guys are better than Brandon Ayuk is
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: what I'm saying, and I agree, and I agree, and
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: that's what they're weighing, like, is the guy coming out
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: of the draft, is he going to be better than
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: Brandon Ayuki is now four years light right, like he's
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: going into his fifth season. Evan is telling you Marvin
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Harrison is going to be better than that, is going
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: to be better than that, and Roma Dunsay is going
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: to be better than that.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: And I don't know that either.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: But that's what makes it hard. I know, like we
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: can sit here on our on our comfy couches and
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: not argue, but just my bottom line is, and we
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: we don't have any repercussions. I don't know if if
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: we're wrong, but.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: John, I just don't think it's such a I just
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: don't think it's so crazy to say it's not. Yeah,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: I'll give up a first round pick now for Brandon.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: I you because he's a first round talent.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: It's not crazy. But I don't think you're crazy for
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: thinking that way.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: But but there's a lot of people, No, we can't
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: do that. I wouldn't, you know.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: I wouldn't do it because of where I am as
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: a as in my rebuilding process.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: That's that's the whole thing.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: It's also just asket a real location because you also
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: have to think about it, even though we don't necessarily
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: think about the money. Marvin Harrison Junior is on a
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: rookie contract, he's under team control for five money as
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: a whole, and he's twenty one years old, whereas Brandon
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: Ayuk is twenty six. You're about to pay him thirty
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: million dollars a year, and he's going into year five
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: of his NFL career instead of year one, And those
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: things are factors in. And then you also have to
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: think about they need a left tackle. And as much
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: as the receivers all become available in the veteran market franchise,
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: left tackles do not come available in the veteran market.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: You just don't see it happen. Like, if you're that
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: good at that position, you're usually locked up for a
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: long time with your team, or the very rare case
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: of like Trent Williams happens where they get traded, but
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: you're not going to see a top ten left tackle
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: in the league hit unrestricted free agency. Yeah, it just
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: doesn't happen.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, I think you're talking me into unless
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Kiten Wallace becomes the next left tackle that gets locked in,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: I think you're talking me into next year, use that
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: first round pick on a left tackle, and then you
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: go into free agency for your wide receiver.
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: That's the rational thing to do, I would say, is
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: to hold your water on the whole thing and just
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: see what happens for this year and take this as
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: a for reset, your one of a rebuild. But if
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: you believe a little bit more in your team and
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: you think that you have a chance, again, like I
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: said earlier, instead of winning four or five games, Brendan Ayuk,
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: we go through the whole domino effect that will now
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: you have a number one receiver and it makes number
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: two better and number three better, and all of a
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: sudden you think you can be a ten win team.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: I'm not saying that you can be. But that's the
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: other side of it is, if you feel like you're
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: gonna outplay your expectations at that point where the draft
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: pick becomes the fifteenth pick in the draft instead of
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: the fifth, if you had a left.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Tackle right now that you could depend on, would you
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: be more open to going after au Card?
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: To me, it depends on what they feel like internally
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: about Drake May. If they feel like Drake maying play
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: week one, then I would go after Brandon. I you Card,
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: because then you're really talking about maybe just having a
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Texans like season.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: Yeah, where like if Houston did that Digs trade last year,
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: do you think they'd regret it?
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: No, but they didn't know, right, Well, but they.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: Didn't know, they didn't know. That's a good point.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: All right. Let's Christian is in LA. What's up? Christian?
- 1:15:07Speaker 14: Hey you guys, Happy Tuesday to you, Thank you, and
- 1:15:11Speaker 14: I am back in it. Los Angeles and Pacific Palace
- 1:15:14Speaker 14: space overlooking Santa Monica's the beautiful.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: Good for you hang out with Mike.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:15:23Speaker 14: So two quick comments, guys, and then a question. My
- 1:15:26Speaker 14: first comment is in hindsight, I have to change the
- 1:15:31Speaker 14: grade that I gave the draft from a B minus
- 1:15:33Speaker 14: to a C. Reason being is we knew we were
- 1:15:36Speaker 14: going to end up with a great quarterback between Daniels
- 1:15:39Speaker 14: or Or or Drake May at the top, and that
- 1:15:43Speaker 14: we didn't do enough research with two high picks and
- 1:15:47Speaker 14: the stuff to quit round to come out of there
- 1:15:50Speaker 14: and some other picks behind that that because of package,
- 1:15:53Speaker 14: that we didn't come out with a good or great
- 1:15:55Speaker 14: or any tackle at all or great receiver.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Well what if Polk ends up being good?
- 1:16:01Speaker 14: But we don't know that yet.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: But you're breaking up there, Santa Monica.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: That's that's tough, right. I let you go there, Christian,
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: Like I'm, you know, generally kind of like you know,
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: you got to show me, you got to prove it.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: But like I find it hard to go from May first,
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: I thought it was X and on July twenty fourth.
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: I think it's why, like what happened between.
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: I had trouble hearing, like what he was saying and
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: what you were saying.
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: He thought the draft was a B or a B
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: minus and now he thinks it's a C. Like they haven't.
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: Well, but I think he was too you saying that,
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: you know, like I think he said, like they didn't
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: do their research, they didn't understand I mean, I think
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: they understood the board. It's just that's how it felt like.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: It's that you can't get every guy you want, not
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: every team wants to make a deal. I'm sure they were,
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: you know, active. We heard that they were trying to
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: move around and get different guy.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: But what if Jalen Polk is better than.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Really personal?
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: You know, I can't even think of all the guys
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: that went late in the first round, Xavior led xavierget
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: was the one I was thinking of because that's the
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: guy I think the Patriots were trying to trade up together.
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: What if Jalen Polk's a better player?
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's the biggest The second guesses are
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: did they could they have been more proactive with the board? Yeah,
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: that's the same and I I and what were they
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: It felt like they drove a pretty hard bargain to
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: make those trade ups that they were reportedly interested in making,
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: to the point where did they haggle over like a
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: twenty twenty five fourth round pick and they just wouldn't
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: part with that pick. And now you have Jalen Polk
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: instead of Xavier Legett. And if Xavier la gets a
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: stunt and Jalen Polk isn't, then unfortunately.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: And it goes from a beatless seat like that that
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: I would totally understand, but we haven't seen anything.
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean they went they picked Jalen Polk in
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: a cluster of wide receivers that.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Went and like Leet went to the cheese right, No,
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: the Panthers. Okay, who's the guy that's hooking up Worthy?
- 1:18:04Speaker 14: Not?
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: Yeah, so you know he Xavier Worthy, Xavier Loguet, Lad
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: McConkie Keon Coleman, Jalen Polk. All these guys went in
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: like the span of ten picks.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: That's this year's version of Taekwon Thornton, Alec Pierce, George
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: Pickens and the little guy from Kansas City Sky Moore.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: Yeah, or Nikhil Harry a J Brown debo Sama Kerry McLaurin.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: So if this ends up being that they got Nikhil
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: Harry and you know, Xavier gets a J Brown, which
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: is a comp that a lot of people use for
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Xavier Loget, ironically, then they screwed up.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: So what I would have you know, sort of second
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: guest is And we talked about this a lot heading
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: into the draft, the depth a receiver as opposed to tackle.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: I would have been more aggressive trying to move up
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: into the bottom of the first round to get a tackle,
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: you know, a true left tackle, and worried about the
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: receiver later and said, Okay, maybe I maybe I lose
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: out on Jalen Polk, but I can probably get a
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: receiver that I'm gonna feel okay about in the third round.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: When they got one in the fourth round that we're
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: all pretty excited about.
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: Yeah, they probably you know, I think the biggest thing
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: with was left You said left tackle. Yeah, And a
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: lot of the players in this draft once you started
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: to get past that, Amarius Mims, like Tyler Geiton Wave,
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: A lot of those guys were right tackles in college
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: or fringe starters, right. But you would have been talking
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: about moving up to like, you know, twenty like you
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: would have had to move. You would have had to
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: jump teams in the early twenties. You know, for those
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: last couple of what of left tackle types, you know, Kingsley,
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: Sue Mattia will be the second guest at tackle. They
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: could have moved up ten spots and jumped Kansas City
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: at the back end of the second round and taken
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: Sue Mattia, who apparently is getting some reps at left
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: tackle already in Chiefs camp. It's like day two of
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: Chiefs camp.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Plug on, I sag Joe Tunian work out great.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: What interior line? Did you see those those positional rankings?
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: I know that Humphrey, but all three of those Kansas
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: City guys were in the top ten of that. You
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: know it's Tony Humphreys, and I forget the other guy's name.
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: You probably know will something right, No, I don't know, if.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: Not familiar. In other words, Kansas City has a good line.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: I don't know Wells, although they're better, they were better
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: last year. But when I come to.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: Go on, who is the right guard for the Chiefs.
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: The left guard for the Chiefs is a pretty damn
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: good player. I don't know if you can for a
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: little bit, Actually, yeah, why can't we get plays?
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: Eric and Maryland writes in web radio at pages dot
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: com two questions. It may just be the typical internet
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: off season nonsense, but I've seen rumblings about possible expansion.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: If that were the case, what cities would you like
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: to see get a franchise. I imagine, yeah, I haven't
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: seen that. I imagine there would.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Have to be uh, Saint Louis.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: I think San Antonio Austin maybe a logical choice. It's
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: the largest city without a football team, among other reasons.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: So where would you if you expanded? Where would you
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: like expansion?
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Maybe Canada?
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Well, I think Toronto makes sense, but doesn't Buffalo have
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: a thing like you can't be that close or something
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: like that. Maybe once upon a time, Yeah, yeah, especially
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: now that they've just built twice Canada World.
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: We're like looking at like Germany and Brazil South America.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: Like, right, if you're going to go international with a team,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: you've got to come up with a whole division of teams.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: You can't just have one team in London. You got
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: to do that so they can play each other and
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: then they go on the road.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: You know, I just think thirty he was such a
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: good number, like going back to the sixteen seventeen eighteen thing,
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: like sixteen was a perfect number. Eighteen is better than seventeen,
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: but just thirty two teams, it's just right. Conferences and
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: divisions and four teams and it's just so neat and it.
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: Just bugged me quarterbacks for thirty.
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: I don't like the fact that four teams in the divisions,
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: you only have to be one of the best one
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: of four. But me, I certainly wouldn't advocate adding, you know,
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: eight teams.
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: Right well, I was just getting at it with the talent.
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: Is there enough quarterbacks? I mean, is it's just going
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: to be you know, to.
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: Be the talent period, not even just cool. I mean,
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: quarterbacks is obviously the high profile, but it just to
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: start enough left tackles either, Yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: There's not enough tackles. There's not enough quarterbacks. And now
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: we're already watching a lot of bad quarterback play. Once
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: we get into the season and people get hurt and
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: things like that. Now you're gonna add two more teams,
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: it's going to be even more bad.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's Saint Louis is the is the
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: market that everybody seems to think is so unfair that
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: they lost the you know.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: But it's just but it makes me think that what
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: it's the next frontier though, because there's not going to
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: be an end to this. They're going to get to
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: eighteen games, they're going to get to having teams around,
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: you know, not teams around the world playing games around
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: the world.
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: But I have no interest whatsoever in international teams. If
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: that happened, if if there's like a European division, like
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: I'm ouse.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: Well what if? What if? What if they looked at
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: the bottom four performing teams revenue? Why like jackson You know,
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: now Jacksonville's building a new stadium too. But let's just
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: say four teams picked up and left and became those
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: international teams. Would that be okay? It's still thirty two too.
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: You wouldn't like it. No, it has nothing to do
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: if you want to make more teams, I'd rather have
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: that than the international.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: But I get the point about the talent tool too.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: I took a thousand percent right about the talent, but
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: I just don't like the idea of I just think
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: it's so greedy.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: Yeah, no, that's and that's what you get at. It's like,
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: you get eighteen games, what's next? You know, every it's
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: just what's next? How can we can? You know?
- 1:23:47Speaker 5: It just feels like they're doing so many things to
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: threaten the product on the field, right, Like the product
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: on the field some Sundays is already kind of bad.
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: And and now they're just an extra game, an extra team,
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: like they're just.
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: Doing things and Christmas Day like that, all of those
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: little things pick away. I mean to me, at the town,
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: at the level of the product.
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: Maybe this is a bad comparison, but do you feel
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: like baseball didn't change anything? And that's a bad way
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: to go, like because they for the longest time, the
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: game just became stale. It became long. They had to
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: introduce they had to change the game because people were
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: falling out of it.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Were they too slow?
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: Yeah, like were they too slow? But at the same time,
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: sometimes I think we all feel the NFL is a
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: little too fast where it's like, no, this is like
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: you got something good going right here, Like it's a
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: good game, it's competitive, you know.
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: But they changed the rules all the time. The NFL
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: does it a lot. Some of them. We sit here
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: and we talk about, oh, that was a really smart thing,
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: you know, like why shouldn't you have an extra challenge
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: if you're right, you know, those kinds of things, and
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: then someone that we criticize, I think those things are fine,
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: but when you start, you know, I think when you're
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: playing more games and more countries more, you know, like
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: that kind of stuff. I think is when you're really
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: testing the thing backfire.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: Second question for me American Maryland is for Matt, what
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: is marine's favorite flavor crayon? Like, do you have what
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: you have?
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: Little kids?
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: What's your favorite color crayon?
- 1:25:10Speaker 7: It's a very funny marine joke.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: I can't hear you, Mango. What do you say?
- 1:25:16Speaker 7: That's a very funny marine joke. Oh, it's a marine
- 1:25:18Speaker 7: joke that marines eight croyons because we're idiots.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: What do you say?
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: Marines?
- 1:25:23Speaker 7: Marines apparently eat crayons because we're not the smartest. We're
- 1:25:27Speaker 7: in better shape than the army, so we running.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: I would get like eating those markers that smell like
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: when you're a kid, like I would maybe would take
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: a bite.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: I don't want to.
- 1:25:33Speaker 7: Only only the army would make that.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: I don't care for that joke they got this is.
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: America something that's rude.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: If you happen to see any Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: Was more than yeah. He also says bring back to
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: silver pants, which I agree, it's a popular sentiment, and
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: get rid of the blue pants. Bring back to silver pants.
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: It's an easy fixes everybody does.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: Everybody hate the blue pants because they don't win in.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: Them, because they don't has nothing to do with the
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: blue one blue.
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: I don't want blue.
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: The blueberry look is awful.
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: To much blue.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: It's tough.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't mind the white and blue. No, but
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: I don't like the blue one blue. So when you're
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: wearing the blue shirts, you should have the silver pants, agreed.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: I just I still feel like I'm waiting for the
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Dynasty uniforms to come back, march back out of that tunnel.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: Like I still feel like I'm watching like a weird
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: like Patriots exhibition game where they're wearing the wrong you know,
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: like when are we going to just get back to
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: like the Patriots that I got to know that.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: Particular evoke their uniforms.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: You don't like those ones, no, because they want too
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: much on them.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: No, obviously I would go back to those for that reason. No,
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: But in all seriousness, I always found it an odd
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: choice to have that much success and change your uniform.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: The teams that changed the uniforms are looking generally for
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: a change of direction. I said, new era or money, right,
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: you know, I mean when parcels came in in ninety three.
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: It was like a fresh start, like new you know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: like new coach comes in, We're going to change our
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: entire color scheme. They that's when they went from the
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: red to the blue. Initially, that made sense to me.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: It was a new era. You were in the bottom
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: of the league. This is the brand change, this is
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: the time you do it. The Patriots had the best
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: twenty years stretch in the history of professional sports and
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: decided to change their uniforms. But it made no sense
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: to me. I'm hoping, no offense. It's like San Francisco though, no,
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: I mean like above, no.
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: Remember with San Francisco, they like did all of a
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: sudden they got like three D numbers and they started
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: messing with it. It's like San Francisco, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Green Bay.
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: These are the dynasties of the NFL. And when you
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: see those teams on the league, you don't even need
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: to look at who it is. You know exactly who
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: it is. And I don't feel like that with the
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: Patriots anymore. I feel like, like you said, Paul, they you.
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: Know, rebranded when just because I didn't particularly love the uniforms.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: Look what they did in those uniforms. You know, they
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: got twenty years of dominance right again.
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: And I just will put it back to as a
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: fan the visual of the feeling of those uniforms that like,
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: this is the these are Patriots.
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: The red, white, and blue the late seventies when you
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: red pants with the white.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: Shirts and would like that's for you.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: But I mean, you know, and but for a lot
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: of fans who watched the Dynasty and we're sot, you know,
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: like I don't know, I still feel like I'm waiting
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: to watch never wanted them.
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: All the jersey stuff is all about money, and it's
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: all because they reprint the jerseys and now you have
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: to buy the new jersey. And like the Bruins have
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: like ten different kits.
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: If they want to Drake made Dynasty jersey in that
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: pro shop right now, the thing would sell like hot.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: And then the Dynasty jersey now there.
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: Now the Bruins are going back to the original Bruins uniform.
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: So if you bought the centennial one, now it's that's
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: all going back. The Celtics are adding jersey like that's
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: what all these teams do they the NBA. You're right,
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: it's it's all about money, Yeah, because you have to
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: buy the new jersey.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: But the NBA teams they all have like eight combinations
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: now I know.
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: Oh yeah, the Celtics have the City connector Red Sox
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: with the City Connect jerseys.
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: Like it's all about at least the Bruins like it was.
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: They were celebrating a centennial, so it was a special
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: uniform for the one hundredth year. Like even though I
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: didn't like them, I got what they were.
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: I didn't want too many arms.
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: Saw the whole thing together, like the top and the
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: bottom together on a player.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: It's the best uniform in the four major sports.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Celtics green white.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: Really, yeah, you're wrong, that's okay.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: Oh my god, we couldn't say that, but.
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: You hear the objective.
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: I really really like the Red Sox road uniforms. Now, okay,
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: the gray with the red you know and the names
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: in the back.
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: What about the Cardinals white with the best uniforms in sports.
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: I've never been like a lot of people will do
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: what what Deuce just did, and like, oh the Raiders
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: Classic the Colts class never did anything for me.
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: No, I like the Raiders uniforms and I'm upset about that.
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: I don't know who I would pick. Yeah, I kind
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: of like the Dolphins hawkwamarine uniforms.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't understand how men fawn over the powder
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: blue of the Chargers.
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: You know what a nice man.
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: I like the powder blue.
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: I liked the when they used to wear the yellow pants.
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: Pretty much anything in the seventies answer seventies I likedies.
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: I think the seventies should have. That was the Cleveland
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: Browns with the brown uniforms with the orange pants.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: I mean, oh, some of the baseball uniforms of the seventies,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: like the Padres. Oh man, the Pirates.
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: Astros, you like that stuff. So I did like the color.
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: But you know one look I didn't like from that era,
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: the old box hat that like the pill whatever what
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: do they call that? The hats? So the Pirates had them,
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: the Cardinals had them.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate that.
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: I just I didn't like the look of those hats.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: I hated him.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: And we got them for c Yo one year.
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you didn't wear it, No, you slammed down the sub.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: You had to wear it. But I always looked funny
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: on my head.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: Well, hats am I misthinking? Like I remember having a
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: red Sox painter cap and everybody had those. They were like.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: Records pins caps. They got huge in like the late
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: seventies early eighties, but they were like they were boxy,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: like they had like the stripes around the side. There
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: were real baseball hats, but they had like a flat top.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: Look at them.
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: Yeah, not good.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, who else? Someone else had them too.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: It was like three teams. Yeah, I can't think now.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: I've been meaning to read this email for a while,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: he wrote in a couple of times. Jay Lassard, he's
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: president of the Tampa, New England Patriots Fan Club, and
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: he says that with it being the off season and
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: training camp, I thought it was the perfect time to
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: see if you could take a moment to talk about
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: all the amazing fan clubs we have across the United
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: States in the world. I can attest that attending Patriots
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: watch party hosted by a local group is the most
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: fun you can have on a Sunday if you happen
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: to be a fan living outside the New England region.
- 1:32:08Speaker 9: What he.
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: Just leaves when we're talking about the fan club to
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: fix it and then he knocks the camera.
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: Anyway, you got the back of friend's head.
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: Now screw the fans.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: He says, it's great to be in a watch party
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: hosted by a fan club. I can also tell you that, unfortunately,
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: a lot of the Patriots fans spread across the States
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: are completely unaware that these fan clubs exist. The Patriots
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: do a great job with their fanclub registrant Patriots dot com,
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: but the more we can educate Patriots Nation on the
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: fact that these clubs exist, the better. I urge all
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: listeners to look up a local fan club in your
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: city and to attend to watch party. There's truly nothing better.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: Fan clubs like us here in Tampa, Nashville, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Santa, Monica, Dallas,
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: and Moore are all doing a fantastic job and their
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: work should be recognized. Degree Jay. On Patriots dot com,
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: if you go into the fan Zone section, there's a
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: fan club registry. You type in wherever you are or
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: wherever you want to be, and it'll just list all
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: the fan clubs in that area and you can get
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: in contact with them if you happen to be in
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: the area or traveling, find out where they're having their
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: watch parties on Sunday and you can join it. If
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: you want to start a fan club, you can go
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: there and register a new fan club. You can join
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: a fan club. So it is something that we the
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: Patriots should do more to promote, is that registry and
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: all our fan clubs. But he's right, and it's not
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: just here in the States. It's everywhere in the world.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: We saw in Germany, yeah, Germany, now in Brazil, you know, UK,
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: we're going to be in London. We'll probably do something
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: with the UK Patriots when we're there. But he's right.
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: If you're really looking for a cool thing to do
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: on a Sunday, go to a fan club watch party.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: And I've been there when we're on the road. I
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: often go, not for the watch party, but the night before.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: They usually have something and they're always a blast. It's
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: all Patriots fans and they're having a good time. Yeah.
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: I've actually been to Sonny McLean's in Santa Monica with
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: the Patriots fan club out there when I was living
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: out there and I worked a lot during Patriots games.
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: But it was a primetime Thursday night or something like
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: that that I got to go and it was it
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: fell like home, you know. You get to go and
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: it fell just great to be around other Patriots fans
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: three thousand miles away from where the game was happening,
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: and it didn't feel like you were just on an
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: island watching the game by yourself at home and no
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: one else around you cares because no one else is Patriots.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: Did you do that too great?
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: Did you used to go to yeah?
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: Bars?
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Now it strikes me as I can't go
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: to a bar.
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: I need to know, well, this was old, dude, This
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: wasn't quite like I need to focus there, Definitely, I
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: need to focus now. But when I first moved out there,
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: it was just it's like walking into home, like all
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: of a sudden, you know, and it's just the whole vibe.
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: And I mean you saw joy it there like shorts,
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: but you know, just old Patriots jerseys, you know, even
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: like the old old old ones. You know, there was
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: a whole like politics to Sonny McLean, so like you know,
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: there's certain people had to sit in certain places. I
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: might have told the story before, but there was always
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: a guy like his thing was after Patriots first down.
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: He would be the delayed first down. So in the
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: whole bar would be like another Patriots first first down
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: and then first down like he was the delayed first
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: down guy, like that was his whole thing. You know
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: that these are the characters at this thing. Guy donated
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: free stuff. They do a halftime free raffle. I still
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: have a mug that, you know, Patriot.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: I try to understand you.
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: It's it's a lot of fun.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: I know a lot of them do like community work
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: and they they they do stuff and they make donations
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: to local charities. So it's good. So again, Patriots dot
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: Com fans oone section. Then go to the registry and
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: it's pretty easy to navigate. You can figure it out
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: on your own. But join a club, you know, buy
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: us star a new club, just visit on what on
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: a game day. It's it's it's a good time.
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: So you know what tomorrow is first day training cam. Yeah,
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: and that's the Running of the Jewets. Oh really, what's
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: that first edition? There'll be thirteen of them. It's when Sully,
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: Obie and and and everybody comes running in to get
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: to when the gates, when the gates open at ten am.
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: The Running of the Jewets.
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: Get the best seat.
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: You've got to get the best seat.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: Yeah, the way you could get run over just like
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: the running of the bulls.
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: Well, it's good now that these these kiss these days
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: don't even know because these practices are at eleven now
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: when were they were at nine?
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: When I was a kid, you had a responsibility.
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: You had to be up at six, you had to
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: be there by you know, this was the Brady years too.
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: So we're talking about, you know, ten thousand people coming
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: to the training camp practices, and it was it was mayhem,
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: it was ever where.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: You were if you were in LA because you ended
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: up on the ramps.
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: Yeah, every man for himself out there pushing her down.
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: So the weather's okay, Like it's just like, you know,
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: I don't want it to be all rainy.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Crappy day, Matt writes in in his subject line, is
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: Evan is being a bad nerd?
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: What?
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: Yep? Evan has repeatedly stated that the Patriots offensive line
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: was the worst in the NFL, often signing one stat
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: I have two problems with this. ESPN win rates state
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: that they're dead last for past blocking but ranked tenth
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: in the NFL for run blocking.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: That's what we've been saying.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: This would mean their line is better than some other
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: lines overall. Even if ranking worse with pass blocking some teams,
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: like the Jets ranked thirtieth and PBWR and twenty eighth
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: in RBWR. The Pats line is better and two.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: So why are the Jets running games so much better
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: than the Patriots running game?
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: Then exactly the Patriots added to their offensive line. If
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Evan is going to live by this statistic to the
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: point of advocating for Drake may to sit because of it,
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: it seems disingenuous to not note that they signed an
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: offensive tackle that ranked twelfth Monk twelve a monk all
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: tackles in ESPN, PB w R the same stat.
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: Just out of curiosity, Like why is this an Evan thing?
- 1:38:09Speaker 5: Like I am I the only one that's saying this, Yes,
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: and so I'm confused.
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: I don't really care what the rankings say. So we're
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: talking about signing a corps for is that what that's
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: supposed to be? Say, he's twelve. He was so good
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: that he got benched for a rookie who never played
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: on the right side.
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: Well on the right he did sound off at the
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: coaching staff. Yeah, Like, but I'm also the only one
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: that is saying that the offensive line is a concern
- 1:38:37Speaker 5: that Drake may might not be best. Throw him out there.
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: I'm the only one.
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: I don't really care about them. The drake made part
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: of the offensive line, but to suggest that the offensive
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: line is not a concern the way that article did
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: that Mike read, and I was glad to hear Aaron
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: sort of separate himself from that. Yeah, you're just like
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: whistling past the graveyard.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Well, Rusty in Arlin as the other side of us,
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: he says, I really think we're whistling past the graveyard
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: on the offensive line, particularly that they lost their best
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: guy and still seem ambivalent on whether the next best
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: guy should play an important position that basically sunk them
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: last season, right tackle or guard, when they spent like
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: four picks on guards the last three drafts. Fred, I
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: hate to go after you, but I remember correctly you
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: said the offensive line wasn't a disaster last year. I
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: strongly disagree, especially when when you was at was at
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: locking down that guard position they're so worried about. Then
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: it got better when someone figured out maybe low giving
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: up pressure every play is an issue. I'm all for
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: starting rookie quarterbacks, but if their plan is to basically
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: put out junk at both tackles. They need to see
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: how bad it is first. May can't learn anything getting
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: hit one point five seconds after each snap. After we
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: enter the training camp, I will be closely following where
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: and when you plays. Least, tell me what I got
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: wrong on why the line was so poor last year,
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: because I think it was mostly the tackles. They get
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: paid the most and drafted the highest for a reason.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: The only improvement is that Penn Steak guy, if the
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Penn State guy can actually play well.
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: Also coaching, I as much as I agree with the
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: ninety percent of what the emails said in terms of
- 1:40:21Speaker 5: the talent being more important, you are hoping and hoping
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: that Scott Peters and Alex van Pelt and their staff
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: now is going to have it more together than what
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: was behind the scenes a disaster with Adrian Clem last year.
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: Like hopefully that all is buttoned up and they're better,
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: more cohesive unit and they played maybe above their talent
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: level a little bit on the line. You know, that's
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: the other side of hope.
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: That's kind of what I'm hoping for, And I like,
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: I just I don't know why. I just kind of
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: feel like I'm just like, I know it's a concern,
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: and it's definitely an issue with left tackle, and there
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: are big questions, But I just I still think that
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: they'll be okay. They'll be okay at line. It won't
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: be so bad that it's going to completely torpedo their
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: whole offense. Will it be a reason why they win
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: a lot of games. I'm not expecting that. But I
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: have more confidence in the line being able to somehow
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: pull it together than I don't have that confidence in
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: the receiver corps. Like I don't think that they're going
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: to be talented enough to be make a difference. But
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: I think when we saw plenty offensive lines over twenty
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: years here that we're not loaded with stars that did fine.
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: You know, I think that they can be fine. And
- 1:41:27Speaker 4: I just that's the voice on the back of my
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: head and we get so, oh my god, it's gonna
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: I just I can't see it destroying everything. Maybe I'm wrong,
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: maybe I'm not Tom Brady, No go.
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: I go on on both sides of this equation. I
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: don't think last year was solely because of the offensive
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: line was bad. I do think the offensive line was bad,
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: and I don't think it'll be much better this year.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: I think that the guards last year again according to
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: these numbers. And you know, we started off we're talking
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: a lot about why the Patriots are going to be
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: better than people thought, but based on numbers, so we're
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: talking about the same thing. Strange and so were I
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: want to say, fifty eighth and sixty one out of
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: sixty four qualifying guards last year in pass blocking, Like
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: the line is a problem. It was a problem last year.
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: And there's guys that we don't know about where they.
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: They should look worse, a little worse than they really
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: are because of what was going on overall.
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: With That's what you have to hope, I know, is
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: what Evan talked about right off the top of his segment.
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: You have to hope. You can't just go by the numbers,
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: but you have to go by you have to hope
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: that Scott Peters is better. Well, you know, we're putting
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: our eggs in a in a first time basket in
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: a lot of places. That's true, Like there's a lot
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: of newness and we're just assuming it's going to be better,
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Which is why I asked Aaron the question that I
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: asked him, Why are we assuming it's going to be better,
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: Like he went to Great Lanes to explain how he
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: assigns the greatest value for a lost coach that they
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: ever have in losing Bill Belichick on defense, but didn't
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: take away anything from the offense based on the fact
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: that everybody's in a new spot, Like why is it
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: going to be better? Why are we assuming it's going
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: to be better? Because Mac Jones was the Antichrist evidently
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: last year.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: Because and he was terrible. Don't know, because it was
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: so bad.
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: But like, listen, I have been very critical of Mac
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: Jones for three years. I'm not going to pretend that
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: didn't happen.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: Mac Jones was the biggest reason why the offense could
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: not move the ball last year. And that's what I'm
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: saying is not the offensive line, but Mac Jones.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: And could he have made the offensive line look a
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: little worse.
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: Than it And maybe Brissett will make that line look better.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: I don't think Jones made the line look worse than
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: it was. I think Jones couldn't handle it. Maybe Brissette
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: will be able to handle it, do you know what
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: I mean?
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: They're also going to be different on first and second
- 1:43:53Speaker 5: down and you hope some of the schematic things that
- 1:43:55Speaker 5: they're going to do are going to make it easier
- 1:43:57Speaker 5: to protect, make it easier on the quarterback to get
- 1:43:59Speaker 5: the ball by moving the pocket, by changing the point
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: of attack, boot legs, that sort of stuff like That's
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: the all idea of this scheme is we're actually gonna
- 1:44:08Speaker 5: block you by just like the flow of the people
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: on the field. You're all gonna be running one direction.
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: Then we're gonna bootleg them out the other way, and
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: your pass rushers now have to put their foot in
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: the ground, change direction, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: And compare that to what Kendrick boorm was talking about
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: with the Matt Patricia scheme, where like that is gonna
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: make the offensive line look work. There is no scheme,
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: There is no It is not all connected. You know,
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: these guys are just and teams seem like they knew
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: what were coming to so I can't extract those things.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: I'm not assuming anything with this team. I'm not gonna
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: assume anything is good this year. But there are certain
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: things that I'm gonna choose to worry about and choose
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: not to worry about. And for some reason, maybe it's
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: just me, but the offensive line. I don't think will
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: be the how this team winsor loses this year. It's
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: they're gonna be fine.
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I think Martin in London fine, Martin and London right,
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: sin He says, would you all be interested in joining
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: a PU listeners fantasy football league?
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: No, okay, I mean I would agree.
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: I'm speaking for myself, but anyone.
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: I don't do fantasy anymore.
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: I do one league.
- 1:45:10Speaker 5: I used to do a bunch of leagues, especially now
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: that you like we work, it's so hard to.
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: Keep up when I've lost.
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: I do one league.
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I had. I did it for a while with
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: a buddy at partner and he was like, way morning.
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: I mean, he'd be like, we got to come over
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: and do research. I'm like, dude, can we just make
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: through the draft?
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: Like? I don't like when when it stops being fun,
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: know right, and you're like, oh, I actually trying, it's
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: not fun.
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: There are just sundays now even I actually last year
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: I gave just my password and said, like if I have, like,
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: I scratched a lot, you know, because I were working,
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: Like I can't be tinkering my fantasy lineup. Out twelve
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: fifty three on a Sunday.
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: And the game starts tweaking act.
- 1:45:49Speaker 5: I'm like, if somebody's like inactive in my lineup, just
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: like go in and change it, Like, yeah, I can't
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: do it.
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: Did she do it? Okay?
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: Actually won our league?
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: So who knows what they're doing.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Jordan is in Hawaii. Uh, one question from him? Who
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: stands to have the most to lose in the most
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: to gain from this training camp?
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: Drake Man, I don't know. I don't know if that's right.
- 1:46:14Speaker 4: That's the first thing came to my most.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: Juju.
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: I mean, I don't feel like you.
- 1:46:18Speaker 5: Want to win? Was the game?
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: I mean it's I don't know. I mean I could
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: see Juju playing to not playing it, like to being cut.
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: So I don't know. Maybe it's him because.
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: Oh it's we're looking for one player most, because that
- 1:46:33Speaker 3: would be a good.
- 1:46:33Speaker 4: That's what I thought, most to lose their most.
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: Again, we're looking for like who has can you name
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: a player who has the most a game, which I
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: would say Drake may was probably in that most to lose,
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: but both guys like being the same guy. Juju is
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: a good pick, Mike because I could see him being
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: sort of a regular player you know, maybe the third
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: receiver for what the receiver or not on the team, right.
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: Yeah, right, That's why I don't put Drake May in
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: that category.
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: Because he's no, I don't know, if you he's on
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: one guy, I would agree, Yeah, I think Jujus. The
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: worst that's going to happen to Drake May is you
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: going to spend the year as a backup.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: Right right, But I think Juju is a good one
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: for that good candidate for that category most.
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: Of although he goes to gain and lose, you know,
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: for camp we're talking about, he just can't just not
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: like May, You got to play a couple of games
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: and really look bad, like I just.
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: Can't lose, just can't we're talking about.
- 1:47:23Speaker 4: I mean, it's really kind of the bubble guys. I
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: would think too that you're you know, kind of that
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: are procolating in your head. I just don't. I mean,
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: you did the you did a ry rejection. Do you
- 1:47:31Speaker 4: want to do you want to pitch out of it?
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: Chad Island, I didn't get out of the league or
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: the you know, the kicker for the next.
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: Ten years we saw mini camp. I mean it looks next.
- 1:47:41Speaker 3: And I didn't have really anything out of the ordinary.
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: But but you have trouble. I mean, we all have
- 1:47:45Speaker 4: trouble come up with fifty three. There's not a lot
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: of real bubble guys.
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: My initial my initial roster when I added him up
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: was fifty one players.
- 1:47:52Speaker 4: Yeah, like cornerbacks like Marco Wilson, like those guys, you know.
- 1:47:56Speaker 3: Yeah, And I could make it like those I could interchange,
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: you know, like you could tell me that Juju's in
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: and Taekwan Thornton's out. You could switch them ragers in,
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: like you could tell me on the on the tackles,
- 1:48:08Speaker 3: like Tyrone Wheatley in or Calvin Anderson out, or the
- 1:48:12Speaker 3: other way around. Vaderian Low.
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: I don't know, good Tyroneheeley reference. Oh no, it actually
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: is the Tyrone wheel. I was thinking of Terrence Wheet.
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: I think the other the old cornerback.
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: Yeahs, I see, you're not the first person that's told
- 1:48:25Speaker 5: me that they have a tough time getting to fifty three.
- 1:48:28Speaker 5: Right now, I guess I do it the wrong way.
- 1:48:30Speaker 5: I don't know's I'm always like, yeah, so did I
- 1:48:36Speaker 5: but in my first one. But I just I feel
- 1:48:38Speaker 5: like I I might think about it the reverse. I mean,
- 1:48:41Speaker 5: this is doesn't matter. But it just like you like
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: add up right to fifty three, where as I go
- 1:48:46Speaker 5: from ninety and subtra fifty three, So like you're always
- 1:48:51Speaker 5: at like fifty five fifty six, and you're like to
- 1:48:54Speaker 5: your point. It could be Tyrone Wheatley, or it could
- 1:48:56Speaker 5: be Vederian Low And now I have to decide, you know.
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: And I picked some extra offensive lineman because of that uncertainty,
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: you know, And I think Strange will be on pup,
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: so I still pick ten offensive linemen. They won't have
- 1:49:08Speaker 3: ten offensive linemen on the active roster all year. Yeah,
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: we might guess. You know, some guys on the practice squad.
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: Some of those you know, Jake Andrews, I don't know,
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: like I haven't. I don't know where he factors in.
- 1:49:20Speaker 5: We didn't see him on the spring, right, It's gonna
- 1:49:22Speaker 5: be interesting to see some of those guys, even all
- 1:49:25Speaker 5: the way down to like a Marte Mapu, that were
- 1:49:28Speaker 5: drafted by the old regime, with plans in mind that
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: Bill Belichick probably had for some of these players that
- 1:49:36Speaker 5: now all of a sudden, like a Marte Mapu, Well,
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: Kyle Dugger is here now, any that opportunity is not
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: going to be there for him. You know, David Andrews,
- 1:49:44Speaker 5: he came back for another year. So now Jake Andrews
- 1:49:47Speaker 5: were two years into waiting in the wings to be
- 1:49:50Speaker 5: the next center. Like these types of guys, at what
- 1:49:53Speaker 5: point Antonio Maffi certainly not drafted to play in a
- 1:49:57Speaker 5: wide zone system, Like he's at three hundred and forty guard,
- 1:50:00Speaker 5: you're not gonna ask him to block outside zone. So
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: like some of these guys that were drafted recently, that
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: Bill probably had one thing in mind, and now they
- 1:50:09Speaker 5: these coaches have another thing in mind. It'd be interesting
- 1:50:11Speaker 5: to see where those guys fall.
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: Let's see who's this.
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: I just say, well, friend's doing this. Just to add
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: that point, I'm interested next year too, Like how do
- 1:50:23Speaker 4: they start to evolve on defense? They get away from
- 1:50:25Speaker 4: Bill for year, they learn what they're good at, what
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: they maybe aren't good at, and they're like, we can't
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: run for safeties out like we need to get more
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: conventional things like that.
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: Recently with all the Ayuk potential hype and people saying
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: Polk is just a wide receiver too, like Meyers or
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: Tyler Boyd and that Jvon Baker and Bourn get more praise.
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: To be the guy. I can't help but feel like
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: he's not getting Polk. He's talking about getting the excitement
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: he should be getting, especially if we believe Drake May
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: is the guy, which I do, and the connection they
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: seem to have built together. He compares Poke's senior year
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: excuse me, pokes senior year in college stats are nearly
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: identical Tayuk, with him being the number two and Ayuk
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: the number one, as well as combine numbers are very similar.
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: I don't so I'm not gonna so you don't give
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: Ayuk more credit for doing it as the number one, right.
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: The other guy doing is another guy on the other
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: side of Roma Dunz.
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: I don't know why Pok is getting the treatment. He's
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: only at wide receiver too, because he was in college.
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: When we see plenty of schools have multiple number one
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: wide receivers like Ohio State, LSU and.
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: You know what, he was actually Washington's three, right.
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: And even Old Miss had a J. Brown and DK Metcalf.
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: This leads further. This led to further research on the
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: Pro Bowl wide receivers and how Pope compares with combine metrics.
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: So he's he gets into the whole yeah, so, I
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: mean the stats he thinks Poks should be getting more credit.
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: Sure, the raw stats though, are not apples to apples
- 1:51:55Speaker 5: because that Washington offense through the ball like eight hundred times,
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: and it's it's just total different, Like you can't really
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: do that as much in college. That's why for the
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: most part when it comes to the draft, I don't
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: even look at their box score production for ninety percent
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: of the guys, Like, I don't care. It doesn't really
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: make a difference because it's not translatable all the time
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: to what you're gonna be doing in the pros. The
- 1:52:16Speaker 5: offense that they are running in Washington is its own thing,
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: Like it's it's a very unique offense the way that
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: they play, and they they do not run the ball.
- 1:52:24Speaker 5: They throw. They must have threw the ball six hundred
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: and fifty times in thirteen games last year. So they
- 1:52:30Speaker 5: are just all their receivers produced. And that Washington offense
- 1:52:33Speaker 5: from a Duneesay to McMillan to.
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: Polk and he shot up when McMillan was out. Yeah,
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: when McMillan came back, his production tailed off. It's now
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: did become a lesser player, right, No, he was behind
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: two other guys.
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: Right, But that's good that you know his production went up, right.
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: But again, given the I think that the analogy without
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: you is kind of foolish. Like one guy did it
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: as the man, the other guy did it as the
- 1:52:59Speaker 3: other guy. Like this is a big difference.
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: Tonference yea, Nate is in Connecticut and he's thirteen.
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: And by the way, if he turns out to be
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: Tyler Boyd, I'd be thrilled. Tyler Boyd's a really good player.
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: He wants to know will Marty Mapoo step up? He
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: had a little playing time under Bill Belichick, but I
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: think he will be out there more under Mayo, considering
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: Mayo is a player's coach, and maybe he'll get more
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: reps at linebacker. So what do you think about Marty
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: Mapoo's role on the team.
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I was just hinting at that it's
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: an unknown because I'm pretty certain that they had plans
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: of him taking over for Kyle Dugger. If not this year,
- 1:53:38Speaker 5: then maybe Dugger plays one year on the franchise tag
- 1:53:41Speaker 5: and then they transition. I just can't imagine that Bill
- 1:53:45Speaker 5: would have given Kyle Dugger the contract that this group
- 1:53:47Speaker 5: gave him in free agency, So they drafted Martin Mapoo
- 1:53:51Speaker 5: to play that role, and now that he's blocked, like
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: that role doesn't exist, So does his role change and
- 1:53:58Speaker 5: does he become a linebackers he become a nickel, Like,
- 1:54:01Speaker 5: does he go into a different role so that they
- 1:54:03Speaker 5: can get all of them on the field or is
- 1:54:05Speaker 5: he just kind of the odd man out and is
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: a special teamer.
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: And Jalen Hawkins push him kind of out of that
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: top three, he's not really you know, I I mean,
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: I honestly, I don't. I don't want to wish this
- 1:54:16Speaker 4: on either of our starting safeties, but I feel like
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: it might take an injury for him to like get
- 1:54:19Speaker 4: in there, really get some playing time, playing, you know,
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: do what they really should be doing with him. But
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: I think Hawkins is gonna be a factor.
- 1:54:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I been your guy. J'arial Peppers is a free
- 1:54:28Speaker 5: agent at the end of the year. Is he another
- 1:54:32Speaker 5: guy that they're going to extend? Are they going to
- 1:54:34Speaker 5: keep him around? Maybe we're talking about martem Apu being
- 1:54:37Speaker 5: a starter in twenty twenty six or twenty twenty five,
- 1:54:40Speaker 5: whenever the heck it is, and that that's the way
- 1:54:42Speaker 5: it goes. But as of right now, is they they're
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: gonna play three box safeties like all oncen't.
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: Do much linebacker stuff in the spring, right No, And
- 1:54:51Speaker 3: I'm I mean certainly not the practices.
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: It's just like I just like people get so old
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: and it's like it's like it goes back to three
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: four four three debate, which like made me lose my eyes.
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: It's like he's not playing in a three four defense
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: like weak side linebacker inside, Like that's not like not
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: that linebacker. He will play sub package. He will play
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: on the second level a linebacker. But it's just to me,
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: it's like a role in the conference continually have about
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: him playing linebacker. It's like it's not that much different
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: than just playing safe.
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: By my concern with him would be is he has
- 1:55:21Speaker 3: some versatility, but might not be good enough at one thing.
- 1:55:26Speaker 3: That would be my concern because he didn't I mean,
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: he played a little bit last year. He didn't like
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: he wasn't a non factor, but he didn't really tall
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: stand out.
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: He's got a little bit of a different flare to
- 1:55:39Speaker 4: him that maybe could be useful in a cover situation.
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: And I don't really understand what the whole coach players coach.
- 1:55:44Speaker 3: I don't know why that helps you get playing.
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: That's where I would say is the best that he
- 1:55:50Speaker 5: played last year on film was covering tight ends. And
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: then if you do get into zone, he has a
- 1:55:55Speaker 5: lot of range at that zone spot and the nickel to.
- 1:55:58Speaker 3: Be able to do some different He can run and.
- 1:56:01Speaker 5: He had some good tape on man coverage against tight ends.
- 1:56:05Speaker 5: But now you're talking about him being a third safety
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: that's coming into cover tight ends like that's a very
- 1:56:10Speaker 5: specific package that they have to be in. It's a
- 1:56:14Speaker 5: dime package probably where you're talking about ten percent of
- 1:56:17Speaker 5: the snaps overall of him being on the field in
- 1:56:20Speaker 5: that type of look.
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: I mean, just one last point on this. I mean
- 1:56:23Speaker 4: Pepper's last year. I love the guy, but maybe you know,
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: maybe they do groom Mapu to kind of step into
- 1:56:29Speaker 4: that role next year if Pepper's falls off or they don't,
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: you want to Keephi around.
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: All right, that's going to be it for today's edition
