- 0:00Speaker 1: And will, where political debates are often criticized as being
- 0:02Speaker 1: inconsequential to the wider rice Joe Biden managed to tip
- 0:05Speaker 1: that theory on It's hid four days later, he's hunk
- 0:08Speaker 1: it down at camp. I've been working out what to do,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Nick Spectators. Washington editor Amber ethnes Beck will us am
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Good.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Morning, Good Morning.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Could you believe what you were watching?
- 0:20Speaker 2: It was difficult to believe, but I think not surprising
- 0:23Speaker 2: for those of us who have been paying attention. It
- 0:26Speaker 2: was a huge campaign talking point for Trump back in
- 0:29Speaker 2: twenty twenty that Biden was not mentally or physically fit
- 0:33Speaker 2: to be president. People who brought this up at the
- 0:36Speaker 2: time were called conspiracy theorists. They were told that they
- 0:39Speaker 2: were crazy, And now four years later, members of the
- 0:43Speaker 2: Democratic Party and Biden's own campaign are starting to admit
- 0:47Speaker 2: what people have been saying for four years. I think
- 0:50Speaker 2: there was a lot of sadness for many people watching
- 0:55Speaker 2: what happened on Thursday night, and probably a lot of
- 0:59Speaker 2: as well from voters who feel like they've been gas
- 1:03Speaker 2: lit and disrespected by people on the left who have
- 1:06Speaker 2: been trying to cover up for the obvious issues with
- 1:09Speaker 2: Biden's health.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I got to say, as a New Zealander halfway around
- 1:12Speaker 1: the world. I'm not voting, obviously, but I look at
- 1:14Speaker 1: a country of three hundred and something million Americans, I'm
- 1:16Speaker 1: thinking of those two the base you've got. I mean,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you gotta be kidding me. I mean, a lot of
- 1:19Speaker 1: people must have been looking at that going this is calamitous.
- 1:24Speaker 2: That's right, And there is a significant portion of the
- 1:28Speaker 2: voter base in the United States that says that they
- 1:30Speaker 2: want an alternative to the two major party candidates. But
- 1:34Speaker 2: of course, with the way the US electoral system is
- 1:37Speaker 2: set up, it's very difficult for a third party or
- 1:40Speaker 2: independent candidate to garner a significant portion of the vote.
- 1:44Speaker 2: In fact, it's even difficult just to have ballot access.
- 1:47Speaker 2: One of the reasons why Robert F. Kennedy Junior, who's
- 1:50Speaker 2: consistently pulling at about ten to fifteen percent nationwide, was
- 1:54Speaker 2: apparently kept out of that CNN debate was because his
- 1:59Speaker 2: signature that he collected to get on the ballot in
- 2:02Speaker 2: a number of states had not been verified yet. But
- 2:06Speaker 2: a lot of those states are not even at the
- 2:09Speaker 2: point in the electoral process where they would verify, so
- 2:13Speaker 2: he was basically set up for failure with the rules
- 2:16Speaker 2: and regulations that they had in place for who was
- 2:18Speaker 2: allowed to participate. And then of course we have a
- 2:21Speaker 2: Green Party candidate, you'll sign a Libertarian Party candidate Chase
- 2:25Speaker 2: Oliver Cornell West is running. But those individuals all pull
- 2:30Speaker 2: at about three percent, if not lower. So right now
- 2:33Speaker 2: people are feeling like they have to pick between the
- 2:36Speaker 2: best between too bad option.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Here's what account work out. You don't go to Camp
- 2:40Speaker 1: David with your family unless you're deeply worried. But then
- 2:43Speaker 1: out over the weekend they raise millions of dollars. He
- 2:45Speaker 1: comes back looks more feisty Jewels. I don't know whether
- 2:48Speaker 1: the Jill's doing him damage or not. Obomba's out, Clinton's
- 2:52Speaker 1: out saying you had one bed not who cares? What's
- 2:55Speaker 1: your sense of this way does this go? Does he
- 2:57Speaker 1: stay or not?
- 3:00Speaker 2: I think right now they're trying to figure out a
- 3:03Speaker 2: way to just weather the storm and see if they
- 3:05Speaker 2: can bounce back from this, because the reality of it is,
- 3:08Speaker 2: if they want to replace Joe Biden, not only does
- 3:12Speaker 2: he have to willingly step aside in order for them
- 3:15Speaker 2: to avoid a very chaotic broker convention, but they also
- 3:20Speaker 2: have to have someone worth replacing him with and one
- 3:23Speaker 2: of the things that they have been giving to donors
- 3:28Speaker 2: in the past couple of days is actually a set
- 3:30Speaker 2: of polling that shows all of the potential alternatives to
- 3:34Speaker 2: Joe Biden are when put in a head to head
- 3:38Speaker 2: matchup against former President Donald Trump, are polling at or
- 3:42Speaker 2: below Joe Biden and Kamala Harris consistently has a very
- 3:46Speaker 2: dismal approval rating and if the Democrats try to pass
- 3:50Speaker 2: her over, that's going to be another scandal for them
- 3:52Speaker 2: to try to overcome. So right now, it's sort of
- 3:55Speaker 2: the devil you know, might be better than the devil
- 3:57Speaker 2: you don't great pleasure mbago.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Well we'll talk again soon, Amber. And that's their problem,
- 4:01Speaker 1: isn't it. I mean, Kamala Harris, do you pass on
- 4:03Speaker 1: the president even if he pulls out? And that's historic
- 4:05Speaker 1: of in nature all by itself. You then naturally go
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the vice president or whoops, no you don't because
- 4:11Speaker 1: she can't win. Who do you go to? And so
- 4:14Speaker 1: they are between a rock and a major hard place.
