- 0:12Do you have the word of God in your hands this afternoon?
- 0:15If you do meet me in the Gospel According to Mark chapter 1,
- 0:19beginning in verse 12 I was so eager this morning to Behold The
- 0:29Glory of Jesus with you and we will do it.
- 0:31Now as we read these two verses, which will be our Focus today as
- 0:35a family and Mark 1. 12, we read in the word The spirit
- 0:42immediately drove him out into the Wilderness and he was in the
- 0:47wilderness 40 days, being tempted by Satan and he was with
- 0:52the wild animals and the Angels were ministering to him.
- 0:59Lori asked you from the bottom of our hearts.
- 1:04Do a miracle in our hearts, help us see Christ.
- 1:09Help us see the wisdom that he has for us.
- 1:11Help us see the glory that he alone.
- 1:13Possesses Lord. Please bring us into a new
- 1:16revelation. Revelation that is not added to
- 1:20this truth, but a revelation that is hidden because of our
- 1:22flesh. Lord Open the Eyes of our hearts
- 1:25so that we can see a facet of the beauty of the son of God.
- 1:30We play with you Lord in Jesus name.
- 1:33Amen. Generally speaking, when one
- 1:38seeks to Endeavor to explore the famous 40-day, temptation of the
- 1:45Lord. Jesus, Mark's account is usually
- 1:49not the primary reference for discussion and perhaps for the
- 1:54apparent reason that it is summarized in, but to versus his
- 2:00report is much briefer than that of Matthew and Luke When you go
- 2:05to Matthew and Luke, you see it much more elaborate
- 2:08understanding of what took place at Lisa.
- 2:11A snippet of what happened during that 40 day, test that
- 2:15the Lord Jesus endured and succeeded in.
- 2:18Now, what's amazing is that as Mark summarizes it, there are
- 2:23still so many similarities that all three of them share and
- 2:27those similarities are things that the believer who loves the
- 2:30word of God, who studies, the word of God are familiar with,
- 2:33almost by heart. We all know that the Holy Spirit
- 2:37and all accounts is the agent that leads Christ to be tempted
- 2:43by the devil. We all know that it was a 40-day
- 2:47trial and we also know that as Jesus comes into this, he leaves
- 2:53to begin his public Ministry. And so, what we see here is
- 2:58though, it may seem like it is totally in line with the other
- 3:02accounts there are still differences.
- 3:06Yes, even in these two verses there are things for us to be
- 3:09able to look at and say, what is, what is the Lord saying
- 3:13through marks narrative that he, that he might not be saying as
- 3:17much in Matthew or in Luke and that should excite us.
- 3:21Because there is no random detail in the word of God.
- 3:24And that is certainly true with this.
- 3:27So as we come to Endeavor to understand this familiar event,
- 3:32in the temptation of Jesus with a prayer, Ambition, we will
- 3:36trust and see that. As we understand this, we will
- 3:39have a fresh love for him, a fresh adoration for the master.
- 3:44And so we come to verse 12 and notice this, the spirit
- 3:48immediately drove him out. This was right after the
- 3:51coronation of Jesus by physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit
- 3:56and by an audible affirmation from the father in the heavens.
- 4:00But from that to this, we hardly take a breath before the scene
- 4:04quickly shifts. It's it just happens at such a
- 4:07rate in, which we're almost like, well, where are we here?
- 4:09What just happened? And that is on purpose,
- 4:11obviously. Matthew and Luke are
- 4:14chronologically consistent with Mark, with this temptation
- 4:18account in, that it happened after Jesus was baptized by
- 4:23John, that is the same. That is something that they all
- 4:27share, but Mark has a different way of saying it, then, Matthew
- 4:32and Luke. Notice the language this,
- 4:35Immediately drove him out. You know what Matthew would say,
- 4:41you know what, Luke would say that the Spirit Led Jesus out.
- 4:47That is not the same when you come to that word drove in the
- 4:52original. It is a very forceful one.
- 4:55It is the actual word that is used in describing the
- 4:59Deliverance that Jesus would bring upon those who are in
- 5:02bondage to Demons when he would cast those demons out when he
- 5:06would drive them out. It's the very same word Iqbal.
- 5:09Oh it is very forceful, it's almost violent and yet the
- 5:14spirit of God wants to tell us That the spirit drove drove, the
- 5:22Lord, Jesus Into the Wilderness now to understand that meaning,
- 5:28and then to see how it's used elsewhere, only to interpret
- 5:31that Jesus was perhaps hesitant or reluctant or not willing to
- 5:36go. And so the Holy Spirit almost
- 5:38takes over and drags him into the Temptation.
- 5:42Would be false would be a misunderstanding.
- 5:47What we are learning here about, Jesus is the first thing in
- 5:50consideration of what, we're studying number one, the
- 5:53submission of the Lord Jesus to the spirit.
- 5:56All this is really trying to say is that the influence of the
- 5:59Holy Spirit was so great, over the life of the Lord, it was so
- 6:03powerful. It was all-consuming and the
- 6:06Lord, Jesus willfully, and joyfully submitted to the
- 6:11leadership of the spirit. This one short word is a massive
- 6:17statement into what the great humility of our savior.
- 6:23He relinquished any control in his life in his Humanity.
- 6:28He surrendered any kind of authority in the sense that he
- 6:33wanted to submit to God. And so the spirit and seeing
- 6:37that humility and hearing, that prayer does what he occupies the
- 6:42driver's seat of Jesus's life so to speak.
- 6:46And what is so powerful about that?
- 6:48I've often said, and I'll say it again that to be full of the.
- 6:52Holy spirit is not so much about us having more of him.
- 7:00So as Believers, we're not saying, Holy Spirit, I want more
- 7:03of you. When we say, I want to be filled
- 7:04with the Holy Spirit what's actually happening.
- 7:07Is he's having more of us. To be full of the holy spirit is
- 7:12not about us having more of him at, it's about him having more
- 7:14of us. And that makes total sense when
- 7:19you compare the activity of the spirit here in Jesus life and
- 7:23the experience that Jesus had in the same scene told elsewhere
- 7:27with the spirit because you know what Luke adds to this.
- 7:31And this is what makes what makes studying the word of God.
- 7:33So exciting. What makes this so amazing is
- 7:36that Luke tells us in chapter 4 and verse 1.
- 7:40It says Too far. He's a neighbor so you can turn
- 7:42there in your Bibles to see it for yourself.
- 7:44Look what Luke says in chapter 4 verse 1, And Jesus full.
- 7:55Full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led by
- 7:58the spirit in the wilderness. So so Luke says, Jesus was full
- 8:03of the Holy Spirit. Mark says that he was driven out
- 8:06by the spirit. And when you bring these verses
- 8:08together, you come to a conclusion and it is this that
- 8:11the result of being full of the holy spirit is that we come
- 8:14under the rain of the Holy Spirit.
- 8:18And it's impossible to claim my brother and whom I love my
- 8:22sister and whom I love to claim that we are filled with the Holy
- 8:26Spirit. If there is no tangible evidence
- 8:28of his leadership, In our lives. And that is the great blessing
- 8:35that awaits us as we obey the command in the word of God, that
- 8:40says seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 8:43There is much to be known in that experience, an experience
- 8:47that is available to all of us. Yes, we are all sealed a holy
- 8:50spirit but it would be a false statement to say that we are all
- 8:53equally filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 8:55In other words, we all have the Holy Spirit by faith.
- 8:58But the Holy Spirit having all of us in the same way is not
- 9:01true though. It is the standard.
- 9:03It is not the experience. Unfortunately of the collective
- 9:08body. The Holy Spirit here as he fills
- 9:13a vessel. You know what?
- 9:15We get, we inherit his prompting.
- 9:20We know something of his persuasion, we know a protection
- 9:25and we know a power over the flesh.
- 9:28When we say that the holy spirit is driving Jesus out.
- 9:31And when we say that when we were filled with the holy spirit
- 9:33that we know his influence, it's not like we become lifeless
- 9:35puppets and we move and we speak unconsciously.
- 9:40What happens is there's an enablement and enablement from
- 9:44the born-again hearts desire that wants to walk in the ways
- 9:46of the Lord. And the Holy Spirit says I'm
- 9:48going to lift you up. Now, I'm a take you there.
- 9:51I'm going to make it possible. And then what we experience
- 9:54there is that he begins to drive every part of our Lives into the
- 9:59purposes of God for us. And so that looks like my
- 10:02thoughts being influenced by the spirit, my tongue being driven
- 10:05in a certain way, my reactions being overcome by the spirits
- 10:08influence and not my flesh. The flesh doesn't have the
- 10:12driver see anymore, the spirit does.
- 10:15And that's why. I know you love to fill your cup
- 10:20of coffee every morning to get you going, but do you daily?
- 10:25Ask him, fill me with all these Spirit.
- 10:29Fill me with the Holy Spirit. I don't want to leave this room
- 10:31empty. Again, that imagery helps but we
- 10:36would get the wrong idea to say that I'm 30% filled with the
- 10:39spirit and my brother over. There is 70% filled.
- 10:42That is not the case. The case is this, the Holy
- 10:44Spirit, having us controlling us influencing us and it is a real
- 10:51thing. It is observable.
- 10:52It is tangible. You can almost step outside of
- 10:56yourself and say there is no way that if it wasn't for the spirit
- 10:59that I would have responded in the way that I responded to
- 11:01that. This is what Christ purchased
- 11:04for you and I and Jesus is in humanity and his Humanity.
- 11:07Here is exemplifying that and as exciting as that sounds, we also
- 11:11have to be realistic you and I can't move forward from verse 12
- 11:16without seeing the, the reality, the realistic reality of what a
- 11:21life filled with the Holy Spirit, looks like what it means
- 11:24to be led by the Holy Spirit. We see the submission of Jesus
- 11:28to the spirit. And if we don't understand what
- 11:31that entails, Then many of us are setting ourselves up for
- 11:35great disappointment and grief in the Christian experience.
- 11:38What do I mean by that? When Jesus according to Luke was
- 11:41full The Holy Spirit. And according to Mark when he
- 11:47was driven by the Holy Spirit, here's our understanding
- 11:52majority, at least when I'm when I'm seeking for this Spirit lead
- 11:56life when I'm seeking to be full.
- 11:58What we imagine is we are going to just progress from one
- 12:02Blissful experience to the next. Along the lines of what Jesus
- 12:08knew at his baptism. Oh, Open Heavens.
- 12:12And manifestations, Supernatural, manifestations,
- 12:16great. Sensations of the father's,
- 12:18affirmation and affection for us.
- 12:20And God is willing to do that. And there are times where we are
- 12:24caught up with him in a very special way if he chooses to
- 12:27manifest himself in such a way. But what happened, when the Holy
- 12:31Spirit descended Upon Jesus? He was driven out into the where
- 12:39Wilderness. That's where the Holy Spirit
- 12:43took him. That is the direction of the
- 12:45Holy Spirit In Jesus life before his public Ministry.
- 12:49And the Wilderness was nothing like what Jesus experienced at
- 12:54his baptism. Someone observed wisely when he
- 12:59said that, a life of obedience will remove all unnecessary
- 13:03trials and tribulations in life. The sorrow that your sin and my
- 13:07sin and Disobedience will bring walking in the path of obedience
- 13:12eliminates. The unnecessary trials in life,
- 13:16yet. Let me say this.
- 13:17At the same time, we have to know that a life of obedience of
- 13:21being led by the spirit. Asher's us appointments with
- 13:25necessary, trials and tests. Life. and I know a lot of people
- 13:31who don't understand that, The spirit drove Jesus Into the
- 13:38Wilderness left to ourselves. We would not dare to step foot
- 13:43into such an environment. Or such a season.
- 13:47What was in the wilderness? A unique test for our Lord?
- 13:50Yes. But let's be specific.
- 13:52There were solitude There was baroness.
- 13:58It was difficult Terrain. It like provision it lacked, the
- 14:04care of other humans. Other people there are real
- 14:08dangers. There there are, there was
- 14:10hostility, there are threats at the baptism.
- 14:13The voice of the father was booming loud and in the
- 14:16wilderness. What was Amplified?
- 14:18The voice of Satan. And this is where the spirit was
- 14:26leading Jesus. This is where God wanted him to
- 14:31go and when we dare to believe any differently for our own
- 14:35lives. Do not be surprised that in your
- 14:40pursuit of being a vessel for the spirit of God, that you find
- 14:43yourself in long periods of pressure, that will test your
- 14:47trust in God. And how you really rely on his
- 14:50word But, for what reason, I mean, this is, if this is what
- 14:56it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit, I don't know, I
- 14:57think I'm not interested. Who wants to go in a Wilderness
- 15:01with the Devil? Who wants to go and be tested?
- 15:09But that's what the flesh says. Be comforted to know that our
- 15:13God is Not sadistic. You know what that means that he
- 15:16takes, Pleasure and Pain and torturing us.
- 15:19He doesn't toy with your life. He's not Reckless with your
- 15:23future. He's not uncalculated.
- 15:27He is perfectly in righteously intentional.
- 15:30With every single step that you take.
- 15:35He is orchestrating it and you will know a a journey and a
- 15:39security in that Journey when you live a life led by the Holy
- 15:43Spirit which brings me to the second observation.
- 15:45The first one was the submission of Jesus to the spirit which is
- 15:48awesome. But consider with me the
- 15:51security in the spirits leading. Look at Mark again and verse 12
- 15:56and verse 13. Jesus completed this Mission
- 16:00without abandoning his post without evacuating prematurely.
- 16:05And what's so fascinating is when you go to Matthew and Luke,
- 16:07you see this drawn-out encounter with Satan, right?
- 16:10We are all familiar with that the back and forth that goes on
- 16:13that battle between the devil and our Lord.
- 16:16But when you come to this, it almost skips.
- 16:18All of that. It's almost as though.
- 16:20Mark, just wants us to see who and what happened to Jesus,
- 16:23right before the Temptation, and what happened right after He
- 16:27just wants to just kind of skip over it very quickly and that's
- 16:31not because he doesn't think it's important but even in the
- 16:34brevity of it, it speaks of what he wants us to see and what you
- 16:38are left with. As we come to these two verses
- 16:40is this simple thought Jesus succeeded?
- 16:44He succeeded in his suffering that he experienced in this
- 16:48Wilderness. He completed it, he passed.
- 16:54And that is so crucial to understand because we would come
- 16:59to this and we asked ourselves, what we asked with the baptism.
- 17:02But why, why did the spirit have to drive Jesus out?
- 17:06Why did he have to be tempted for 40 days?
- 17:08What was it? That that because Matthew says
- 17:10he went in there to be tempted by the devil for that purpose.
- 17:16And again, we might scratch our heads and wonder what is the
- 17:18purpose behind? This was it to make manifest the
- 17:20purity of Christ. You better believe it.
- 17:24Was it to Showcase his power over the devil over all
- 17:28temptation. Absolutely.
- 17:31But there's more, if Jesus identified with you and I as
- 17:36sinners in his baptism, then surely Jesus identifies with our
- 17:41Temptations in the wilderness. He identifies with our
- 17:47Temptations in this. Heightened extreme face off with
- 17:52the tempter himself. And that is something so
- 17:57crucial. Because you see, as Jesus,
- 18:00walked in solitude in that Wilderness and that lifeless
- 18:03desert, something was gained something happened in his
- 18:09Humanity. That is why the scriptures
- 18:13unashamedly tells us about Jesus, in regards to his
- 18:19temptation and how it translates to how you and I relate to him
- 18:23Hebrews 2:18. For because he himself has
- 18:31suffered. When tempted, he is able to help
- 18:36those who are being tempted. Now, we know, and this is
- 18:42important, that there is nothing in Jesus, that would cause him
- 18:45to be tempted. That's you.
- 18:46And I because we inherited something from Adam that
- 18:48corruption but that does not negate or diminish, the
- 18:51intensity of the Temptation though, it was outside of him.
- 18:56How can Jesus suffer with a sinless nature when it comes to
- 19:00Temptation the same way you? And I, when we are walking in
- 19:05the spirit, when we were walking in Holiness when we are, when we
- 19:08are in fellowship with the Lord, Not suffer in the presence of
- 19:12evil. Doesn't that take your heart?
- 19:16Doesn't that tear you apart? And the Soul, when you go out
- 19:20with your family, to some sports game, or whatever it is and you
- 19:22hear people, blaspheming the name of Jesus, doesn't that send
- 19:26a shiver down your spine when you see all the wickedness that
- 19:30is being propagated to our children.
- 19:32Does it? Not do something to you?
- 19:34How much more the one who is without sin?
- 19:38How much more the Holy One? Who suffered when tempted.
- 19:45And what I want to say in light of this is that the Lord did not
- 19:50come into this world merely to be our substitute for sin.
- 19:56That is the climax that is the mission.
- 19:58Yes. But not merely to be our
- 20:01substitute for sin. He also became our sympathizer
- 20:04in temptation. Sympathizer in Temptation, he
- 20:10suffered. And in his suffering, there is
- 20:13something of a sympathy. The Temptations here during
- 20:18those 40 days. Ensures us that we can approach.
- 20:20A God who is experiencing overcame, what what may seem to
- 20:24overwhelm Us in the moment. This will mean a lot to those
- 20:27who know the Great War for Holiness and christlikeness, you
- 20:33know what this means. The Lord the king of glory.
- 20:37The resurrected one, he feels for you and me, he feels for you
- 20:43and me. His heart is connected to us.
- 20:47You can relate because there is a shared experience and I don't
- 20:53know if we understand that the depth of that implication.
- 20:55But I hope I hope you get an idea of it because I'm sure you.
- 20:59Yes, you at one point in your life, in dire need of help, felt
- 21:03this natural pull to. Go to those who, you know, have
- 21:07shared your suffering. You feel as though you can go to
- 21:13them, go to her because you heard you need to speak to mrs.
- 21:17So-and-so or brother so-and-so, because they went through
- 21:20something very similar and they came through.
- 21:22And so you find yourself coming to those people, and unloading
- 21:27your heart and bearing your heart more naturally because you
- 21:31realize that their counsel will be cushioned with a Grace.
- 21:37And with a patients and with surgical advice because they'd
- 21:43been through it, they know they felt the fire themselves and so
- 21:50that's what that's why you go to them.
- 21:52And and your little bit more hesitant to go to somebody who
- 21:54might not have that experience. Because there's a concern that
- 21:58they may not know what to say to you are at worse.
- 22:00Be even indifferent to your suffering because they can't
- 22:03understand why this is so crushing to you.
- 22:08There's almost like this glass window between you and them and
- 22:11there's no touch there, there's no heart to heart there.
- 22:16And here's what we know. The Lord Jesus himself can help
- 22:19us because he can relate to us in all things because he was, he
- 22:23was tempted in all ways. What that means is I can come
- 22:28limping into the presence of Jesus Christ.
- 22:33I can come broken smashed shattered.
- 22:38Barely able to keep myself up and I can communicate though.
- 22:42In reverence yes. But also freely in my suffering
- 22:46because I have an awareness that he patiently.
- 22:50Here's me. Because he endured.
- 22:55All things. So I'm not speaking to a god
- 23:01that looks and he's so distant. This distant deity.
- 23:05I says okay come on, let's go here but one who actually
- 23:09inhabits the Brokenness of his people and he sits close and he
- 23:15now only gives me his listening ear.
- 23:17He then now provides the precise, wisdom and counsel and
- 23:23power, so that I can overcome and like he did He's so
- 23:30attractive. He's so wonderful.
- 23:36And and the spirit as glorious as I truth, it's not the main
- 23:40point of what I'm trying to communicate.
- 23:41Because what I want to say is that it was the spirit who led
- 23:44Christ to suffer in this way. And in doing so he could be a
- 23:50sympathizer with us. And that is just one aspect to
- 23:56why he was tempted. And what does that mean for us?
- 23:59Surely the spirit as he leads us as he guides us, what may be
- 24:04unpleasant what may be a season with wild and strange people you
- 24:10know what I'm talking about? No just do ministry a little
- 24:14longer. Serve got a little bit longer
- 24:18and sometimes even leading us into while we're obeying.
- 24:24Threats. and slander, and Can all these strange things that
- 24:31are not warranted? That don't make sense.
- 24:34And am I here? Because of Disobedience?
- 24:37Be careful. Jesus was perfect and the spirit
- 24:42perfectly led him into such a thing.
- 24:45A Wilderness with wild animals. In a vicious devil for what?
- 24:54For the same aim with the Masters so that incoming out of
- 24:57it, you would inherit something sweet.
- 25:00And that you would gain something sacred.
- 25:04In such a way, that others will be blessed by it.
- 25:09The spirit, that's the security in his leadership.
- 25:13I have no reason to be afraid. It doesn't make sense Jesus,
- 25:20just obey Jesus, just finished, humbling himself in the presence
- 25:25of a crowd before God. And he was showered with the
- 25:29spirit and he was given affirmation.
- 25:31And immediately you're brought into such a thing.
- 25:34Do you believe for a moment that a Spirit Led Life Is void of
- 25:37Temptation? Is void of challenge.
- 25:44Is void of danger. And hostility and problems.
- 25:53Not the unnecessary ones but necessary ones.
- 25:56And that is what we see with Jesus here.
- 25:58And that should encourage us as we seek to live in obedience to
- 26:00him. I can trust his leadership.
- 26:04No matter. What is around me or, who is
- 26:06around me? The security in the spirits
- 26:10leadership of may also add the standard of service to God the
- 26:15submission of Jesus, to the spirit, makes you want to
- 26:18worship Him. The security of the spirits
- 26:22leadership and makes you safe, feel safe, knowing that the
- 26:27spirit will never lead you to something that is without profit
- 26:31even when it comes with the great problems.
- 26:34But there is also an example here by Jesus, there's a
- 26:36standard of service to God. What do I mean by that?
- 26:41When we understand the timing of Jesus Temptation here, it's good
- 26:45to know that it was right before his public Ministry.
- 26:50It was right before he would go out into Galilee and he would
- 26:53begin preaching and doing great signs and wonders.
- 26:58And when you go to look for, again, look with me in verse 14
- 27:01and notice what we are told. And Jesus returned after the
- 27:13Temptation in the power. In the power of the spirit to
- 27:18Galilee, you come back to Mark and what do you read?
- 27:22Or read a verse 14. Now after John was arrested in
- 27:24chapter 1 verse 14. Jesus came into Galilee,
- 27:27proclaiming the gospel. Luke wants to make us know that
- 27:30he came also in power and Power. You know what I find amazing is
- 27:35that the spirit of God that We Came Upon Jesus didn't make him
- 27:38go into public ministry, right away.
- 27:41And I think this is a great great reminder.
- 27:45For those who are aspiring Servants of God, please pay
- 27:48attention to what I'm about to say.
- 27:50Because I think, I think this is one of the reasons why there is
- 27:53so much powerlessness in Christendom in the West.
- 27:57You may disagree with me, but that's okay.
- 28:01If any aspiring servant of God desires to be effective
- 28:05publicly, is that you the know this, he first must know victory
- 28:09over Temptation privately. If any aspiring servant of God
- 28:15wants to be effective for Christ publicly.
- 28:18He first must know, Triumph and victory over Temptation
- 28:23privately. The church.
- 28:26Can I expect to make an impact on the world?
- 28:30When she is flirting and Sleeping With the Devil behind
- 28:35the scenes. It's not going to happen.
- 28:41Jesus came into Galilee with power because he resisted
- 28:44Temptation when no one was looking.
- 28:49David killed Goliath. But what was he doing before?
- 28:51When no one was looking, he was killing bears and lions.
- 28:56And we will not see great advancements.
- 29:01We will now know great blessings of the spirit of God as the body
- 29:05of Jesus Christ. If we cannot do the first and
- 29:08most important thing and that is saying no to unholiness and no
- 29:15to evil. when we are, when we are not in sight of the world to
- 29:21see And I make that case from the example of Our Lord, that
- 29:28there is a correlation listen to powerful Ministry.
- 29:34And private holiness. Consider the example of Jesus,
- 29:41he came into the Wilderness triumphed over the devil and
- 29:46then he went out and was able to minister and bless those who are
- 29:52oppressed by the devil. You can imagine how there can be
- 29:57a series of messages just from combining the Temptation
- 30:01accounts from Matthew Mark and Luke, but we will focus on just
- 30:04what is presented before us. Today, when you come to verse 13
- 30:07of Mark, what do you see? He was in the wilderness forty
- 30:10days, we know that being tempted by Satan, that it seems to be
- 30:13common knowledge and then we read at the end and Angels were
- 30:17ministering to him. Matthew says the same thing,
- 30:19Mark doesn't at the end of the Temptation, when he did succeed
- 30:22and Satan left, Until another opportune time, God sent
- 30:27servants, Heavenly beings to come and to minister unto Jesus.
- 30:32Now, the nature of the ministry is unknown, but it could very
- 30:36likely be that, these Angels Came seeing.
- 30:39Their glorious savior wrapped in flesh, who also knew the
- 30:43limitations of the flesh. He was hungry, he was thirsty,
- 30:46he was weary and it's very likely.
- 30:48I just like a weary. Elijah in the wilderness of his
- 30:51day, the Angels Came to feed him.
- 30:54To encourage him with their presence.
- 30:58And that is mentioned so that you and I are reminded of the
- 31:01humanity of Jesus Christ. He didn't bulldoze through the
- 31:05desert necessarily. With Glory.
- 31:11He went in as a man depended upon the holy spirit and he knew
- 31:16how exhausting it was. He knew how draining it was and
- 31:20then I can relate to him in that and he can relate to me.
- 31:24And so even in my obedience and yours when we come out and we
- 31:27were exhausted and dress, we he can he understands he doesn't
- 31:31look as a come on, what kind of serving are you get up?
- 31:34Nothing of the sort. And so the humanity of Jesus
- 31:37here, highlighted but there's something that Mark says that
- 31:41Loop is Mentioned neither. There's Matthew.
- 31:45It seems to be an insignificant detail, seems to be unimportant,
- 31:47it seems to just maybe put some color to the scene.
- 31:52And it is this and he was with the wild animals.
- 32:01He was with the Wild and Luke doesn't say that.
- 32:06Matthew doesn't want to mention it.
- 32:08But Mark wants to let us know that when Jesus went into that
- 32:11desert. He was surrounded.
- 32:16By Wild. Animals.
- 32:22Why? Why does that matter?
- 32:27I think it's much deeper than just knowing another layer to
- 32:31the potential potential danger, while he was traveling through
- 32:36that Wasteland. When you put the other pieces
- 32:40and these two verses together, perhaps the light bulb will go
- 32:44off, here it is. Animals.
- 32:52Satan. Temptation.
- 32:59Animals. Satan.
- 33:05Temptation. I believe what we're seeing
- 33:09here. Are the elements that were
- 33:13present in the world described by the word of God before the
- 33:16fall? With a much different setting of
- 33:20course. Right before the encounter
- 33:24between Satan, and our first parents, Adam was in a luscious
- 33:29Lively Paradise like Garden. Not a wasteland, not a desert
- 33:38now where there was danger and death, and he was also with
- 33:41animals, not wild, beasts, but tamed beasts, approachable
- 33:48friendly. Ones that presented no threat of
- 33:55any kind of danger. There is no fear there in
- 33:57relation to these animals. But even though Adam was in a
- 34:01more favorable and ideal environment, when it came to
- 34:04Satan tempting him in that atmosphere, he failed He failed.
- 34:11Collaterally. He failed you and I are still
- 34:13experiencing the consequences of that.
- 34:18But then comes Jesus. Who is led by the spirit Into
- 34:23the Wilderness and while traveling he's surrounded with
- 34:25the looming danger of the threats of animals that are no
- 34:30longer tamed but are by Nature aggressive.
- 34:35And there is a limitation there between how much you can
- 34:38actually relate to these beasts. And there is no Garden.
- 34:42There is no glorious Rivers. There is no abundance of trees
- 34:46is just dust and dirt and death. And it seems as though Mark is
- 34:55trying to communicate this. The conditions that Jesus was in
- 35:00were far less favorable than what Adam was experiencing but
- 35:05he still was able to triumph over Satan.
- 35:10He still was able to resist and conquer the lies of the evil
- 35:16one. and the point, the point is this, it's not just for a clever
- 35:23connection, massive implication, Massive implication and you only
- 35:31really understand it. When you understand one of the
- 35:34titles that Jesus was given by the Apostle Paul and I'll just
- 35:38read it to you. Hold it as a reference for
- 35:40another time and First Corinthians 15:45 listen to how
- 35:45Paul in this in this really in his essay, a trying to explain
- 35:52and prove the resurrection. He goes back and forth between
- 35:55Adam and Christ and he says in First Corinthians 15:45 thus it
- 35:59is written the first man. Adam became a living being the
- 36:04last Adam. The last I saw the last human
- 36:08being who's going to exist the last item is Christ.
- 36:11The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
- 36:16Jesus is known as the last item. What's the connection?
- 36:22Why is the spirit of God wanting us to relate Adam and Christ?
- 36:27What do they share? I think the main thing that they
- 36:32share is that they had both a representative role in humanity.
- 36:40They both shared a representative role in humanity.
- 36:45Meaning, what? Adam is your father and mine in
- 36:48the flesh. Being the first man created.
- 36:52He, the theological term is the federal head of mankind.
- 36:57The federal head of mankind and because he's the federal head,
- 37:00the decisions that he makes whatever consequences come
- 37:03about, we share in them. That is why you and I are born
- 37:07into this world with corruption. That is why your precious little
- 37:11child? Does it need to be taught how to
- 37:13lie. Does it need to be taught?
- 37:14Not to bite John it. And he knows how to bite Johnny.
- 37:18You got to tell him not to bite. Johnny, you got a time to tell
- 37:20the truth. You gotta tell him not to be
- 37:22selfish. That is all because of our
- 37:26representative in the flesh Adam and yet a man who is outside of
- 37:32the curse Christ entering into our world seeking to be a new
- 37:38head seeking to be a new representative wants to create a
- 37:42new people who experience. The blessing.
- 37:45Not the consequence of his obedience You and I are
- 37:50suffering of the Disobedience because of our first father, and
- 37:55Adam, and Jesus comes in untainted by Adamson, so that he
- 38:00can walk as a representative for Humanity.
- 38:03And those who would come to faith in him would be linked to
- 38:07him. And then know the blessings that
- 38:09he brings as the one who stands in our place.
- 38:14I hope that makes sense. God so loved us.
- 38:18Listen, he came into our broken world to rescue us from being in
- 38:22Adam and remaining in Adam and I'm paying for the consequences
- 38:26of being an atom by opening a way so that you and I can be in
- 38:31Christ and hide in Christ and be linked to Christ.
- 38:38And to experience the glories that Christ made possible for
- 38:42us. So you don't you and I don't
- 38:44share in the consequences of Adam anymore.
- 38:45Who failed in the garden. You and I enjoy the blessings of
- 38:52The Obedience of Jesus. Yes, on the cross, but also in
- 38:56the wilderness, You and I are not going to pay for failing.
- 39:05For failing to resist temptation.
- 39:07You and I inherit Christ, Perfection over every kind of
- 39:11Temptation that came his way. And that is why Jesus being with
- 39:16the wild animals is so significant because he was
- 39:20reversing the curse. That Adam brought into the world
- 39:24that didn't just affect us who are created in the image of God.
- 39:27But affected even the animal kingdom and nature itself.
- 39:33And so he seeking to heal it. The things that have been
- 39:36fractured because of Adam and now he comes in and he right
- 39:41from the beginning is already ceiling.
- 39:44As we read this. He's already sealing the victory
- 39:47by overcoming Satan and only is going to bring it into full
- 39:51effect at the cross. By saying I overcame what man
- 39:55failed to do and the full effect of this reversal is not yet,
- 40:03it's not yet, it's to come and even Isaiah hundreds of years
- 40:07before Christ gives us a little glimpse into it.
- 40:10You know, the verse the United Isaiah 11:6, the wolf shall
- 40:13dwell with the lamb. And the leopard shall lie down
- 40:17with the young goat and the calf, and The Lion, and the
- 40:20fattened, calf together. And a little child shall lead
- 40:23them. A little child shall lead them.
- 40:27Some would say this is allegorical very difficult to
- 40:31make the case. I see a universal redemption in
- 40:35Jesus Christ, that's what it is. He's not just coming to save us.
- 40:39He's coming to bring a new heavens and a new Earth.
- 40:43He's coming to restore everything.
- 40:44Everything that has been tainted by sin, everything that Adam
- 40:46messed up. He's going to come and clean up
- 40:51and restore and renew. So that everywhere you look in
- 40:54that Millennial Reign and everywhere you look in that
- 40:57Eternal age, you will see. Christ is a strong savior.
- 41:02He saved. Yes, us.
- 41:03But he saved the universe all things.
- 41:09And he is giving us a glimpse of that Victory as he comes in
- 41:13these two verses to show off. I overcame what Adam could not
- 41:17overcome, even though the surrounding environment was not
- 41:21in my favor, I'm still able To obey the father.
- 41:27And that obedience is transferred to you.
- 41:30I want to end by saying this, our culture is trying to create
- 41:33all these categories. Of how humans can identify
- 41:38themselves and it's getting weirder by the week.
- 41:42I can't keep up with this stuff. And here's what I want to tell
- 41:48you today, I don't care what PhD says, what?
- 41:52I don't care, what university teaches, what I don't care what
- 41:55anybody in the white house, has to say, God's house has a word,
- 42:01and this is what I want to tell you, no matter what Humanity
- 42:04creates in terms of categories, no matter how kind of what kind
- 42:07of race ideology and narrative is being presented.
- 42:10The Bible draws a simple line Of where Humanity falls into and
- 42:16it's your choice, you're either in Adam or you're in Christ.
- 42:22As one preacher said it, you're either dead in sin or you're
- 42:25dead to sin. That's it.
- 42:28Nothing else. You're either in Adam or you're
- 42:33in Christ? Where are you?
- 42:36Where are you today? Have you been transferred from
- 42:41the domain of Darkness into the kingdom of his light?
- 42:46Have you been driven from conviction into the loving arms
- 42:51of a savior to say I no longer want to be under the headship of
- 42:54Adam, I must come and make you my Lord.
- 42:59I want to be covered by your righteousness.
- 43:01I want to be restored. I want to know this renewal save
- 43:05me. Renew me.
- 43:09Have you done that? I want to let you know that
- 43:13today. It can all change.
- 43:15It can all change by decision of humility, to say hi.
- 43:20No, I know that Jesus Christ is not my Lord.
- 43:24I know that I have not crowned him my savior.
- 43:27I have not fully understood the legal implications of what he
- 43:31did while walking in this world and dying on that cross.
- 43:34But now I know, I know what it means for me and I know that he
- 43:38bids me to come so that I would know that his obedience is Mine
- 43:44by faith. That's what you have to do.
- 43:48That's what you have to understand because until then I
- 43:50don't care what kind of money you have.
- 43:53I don't care how smart you think you are.
- 43:56I don't care what kind of future you're trying to build for
- 43:58yourself. Satan owns you Satan owns you.
- 44:08You're a slave to sin, aren't you?
- 44:11You can't shake it off. No matter how much you pump into
- 44:17self-will and selfish ambition you fall, don't you?
- 44:22It's because you have a merciless Master over your life,
- 44:26that's why. And there is a Merciful Savior
- 44:30who wants to rescue you and deliver you.
- 44:34And not just be your substitute listen to this for your sin but
- 44:39that as you become the Redeemed by faith, he becomes your
- 44:42sympathizer in Temptation. So that as you walk in this life
- 44:46and you with a brand new heart filled with the Holy Spirit
- 44:50desire to live for him and you fall and Temptation seemed so
- 44:53strong and the tide seems to be pulling you.
- 44:56Almost sweeping you off your feet.
- 44:58You come to the master who saved you say, help me again and he's
- 45:01there to help you again. And if you do fall, you come to
- 45:05seek forgiveness. He forgives you, he doesn't kick
- 45:08you out. But he binds up your wounds and
- 45:11he heals you. He restores you.
- 45:14And he is for you. This is who I present to you
- 45:17today. The Glorious Majestic
- 45:21infinitely, Beautiful. Jesus Christ of Nazareth who was
- 45:25risen from the dead. Can be your savior today.
- 45:28Make him your savior today. There is no other in Jesus name,
- 45:32let's pray. Father, thank you.
- 45:49That Jesus Christ identifies with our temptation.
- 45:55Thank you. That we have a high priest who
- 45:56is sympathetic, whose heart feels for us, who knows exactly
- 46:03what to prescribe to us, because he has been through it himself.
- 46:08For we ask that you would receive worship worship, not
- 46:12just in song, but by your grace worship to say, no to Temptation
- 46:16that, that itself would be worship as your word says, that
- 46:20our body should be a Living Sacrifice acceptable, worship
- 46:23unto you Lord. May we see the fight against
- 46:26temptation as an opportunity to exalt Christ in our know, in our
- 46:30rejection and our Triumph by your power and Lord, we pray by
- 46:35your mercy that we would be a powerful.
- 46:38For group of Believers because in private, you've helped us
- 46:43overcome sin. So that in public, there is no,
- 46:47there is no Authority lost because of hypocrisy, there is
- 46:51no grievance of the holy spirit so that he will not work in and
- 46:54through US, Lord, we want all that he has, we wanted to take
- 46:57the driver's seat of Maranatha, Bible Church, And Lord not just
- 47:03in our meetings but in our lives and our families and our
- 47:06relationship with others. Lord, we want your leadership.
- 47:11We thank you for the head of the church, Jesus Christ, we thank
- 47:17you that in him. We have life in him, we have
- 47:20reward in him. We have eternal life.
- 47:25Thank you that you've rescued us from from Adams Race and brought
- 47:30us into. The securing provision as a
- 47:36child of God. We worship you.
- 47:38We want to just magnify you for giving us a taste of your glory.
- 47:42In these two verses in Jesus name we pray.
- 47:45Amen. Can we stand and Worship the
- 47:47Lord?
