- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Need a little more Disgraceland in your life, just to
- 0:05Speaker 2: touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Yeah, need too.
- 0:08Speaker 2: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 2: to Disgraceland after Bertie.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Hey, what's up everybody?
- 0:29Speaker 2: On this week's after party episode, We've got a special
- 0:32Speaker 2: episode for you this week. A couple weeks ago here
- 0:35Speaker 2: in Boston, I had the opportunity to sit down with
- 0:37Speaker 2: a bona fide rock star and talk to him about
- 0:40Speaker 2: not being a rock star, because you can get that
- 0:43Speaker 2: sort of thing anywhere these days, but instead about his
- 0:45Speaker 2: new podcast, because that's our side of the street here
- 0:48Speaker 2: in Disgraceland. The rock star is, of course Chris Shifflet,
- 0:51Speaker 2: guitarist and the Foo Fighters. And you know Chris. If
- 0:54Speaker 2: you know Chris, you know he's a serious guitar player.
- 0:56Speaker 2: He eats and sleeps guitar and can shred with the
- 0:59Speaker 2: best to them. And shredding is what is new podcast
- 1:03Speaker 2: is all about. It's called Shred with Shifty And I
- 1:06Speaker 2: won't get into it too much here because we cover
- 1:08Speaker 2: it pretty extensively in the interview. But if you're a
- 1:11Speaker 2: fan of the guitar, if you're a guitarist or whether
- 1:15Speaker 2: or not you're a pro, or you're a hack like me,
- 1:17Speaker 2: or an aspiring guitarist, or maybe you've got kids that
- 1:20Speaker 2: are taking lessons. Whatever the case, if you have any
- 1:23Speaker 2: interesting guitar or any interesting guitar gods, then you're going
- 1:26Speaker 2: to want to subscribe to Chris's podcast, Shred with Shifty.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Subscribe to Shred with Shifty wherever you get your podcasts.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Did I mention that it's produced by us here at
- 1:36Speaker 2: Double Elvis? I probably should have it? Is all right anyway,
- 1:39Speaker 2: without further hulabaloo, here is my interview with Chris Shifflett
- 1:42Speaker 2: of the Foo Fighters, recorded live in front of an
- 1:44Speaker 2: audience at the Boston Calling Music Festival a couple of
- 1:47Speaker 2: weeks ago. I'll be back with your voicemails and texts
- 1:50Speaker 2: and recommendations.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And next week's after party. All right, let's get into it.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Boston Calling.
- 1:56Speaker 1: How is everybody doing? All right?
- 2:00Speaker 3: Another round of applause for Chris shiftlets.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:07Speaker 2: So, I have a list of questions. I'm gonna try
- 2:09Speaker 2: hard not to look at it once.
- 2:11Speaker 4: We'll see as a as an aging podcaster, I feel
- 2:15Speaker 4: your feel your pain, I feel your goals.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So Chris has a podcast, everybody. It's coming very soon.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Chris tomin An of it is.
- 2:24Speaker 4: It's gonna be called Shred with Shifty, And it's a
- 2:26Speaker 4: little bit of a departure from from.
- 2:29Speaker 1: What I've been doing all these years on walking the floor.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Uh.
- 2:33Speaker 4: It's very specifically guitar focused and even more specifically lead
- 2:38Speaker 4: guitar focused.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So I heard about this idea.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We talked I don't know, a year and a half
- 2:44Speaker 2: ago or something like that, and you know, I make podcasts,
- 2:48Speaker 2: I produce them, So we were chatting about this idea
- 2:51Speaker 2: and it was one of those things that just hit
- 2:52Speaker 2: me immediately as a fan of music, as like, shit, man,
- 2:56Speaker 2: I want this in my life. I want to see
- 2:58Speaker 2: this podcast. Has to want to hear this podcast.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Me too.
- 3:01Speaker 3: There's a video component.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Let's get specific, tell everybody what it is, because it's
- 3:06Speaker 2: really fucking exciting.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Well, it's you know, sometimes you have like the most
- 3:10Speaker 4: obvious idea and you're like, wait, why doesn't that exist?
- 3:13Speaker 4: And that's kind of what this show is. And you
- 3:17Speaker 4: mentioned the video component. The video component is kind of
- 3:19Speaker 4: the most important because their most important part because it's
- 3:22Speaker 4: it's a it's like guitar instructional, you know, because As
- 3:27Speaker 4: a guitar player, I watch a lot of videos of
- 3:30Speaker 4: people explaining things like pretty.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Close to right, but there it's always a little bit wrong.
- 3:35Speaker 4: So I thought I could exhaust my rolodex here and
- 3:38Speaker 4: reach out to some of these people who I'm trying
- 3:40Speaker 4: to learn, you know, how to play their their widdy
- 3:43Speaker 4: widy parts, and see if I can get the actual
- 3:46Speaker 4: people to explain it to me and teach it to me,
- 3:50Speaker 4: and by extension, teach it to you the people.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So it's you, yes, a guitar god in your own right, Well,
- 3:58Speaker 2: let's not get care with other guitar gods. Yeah, going
- 4:03Speaker 2: through their riffs and getting the real true lesson on
- 4:08Speaker 2: how to play them.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 4: And you know what's funny, And this really should come
- 4:11Speaker 4: as no surprise. It didn't surprise me at all, but
- 4:14Speaker 4: it is funny because that's sort of the idea, is like,
- 4:16Speaker 4: how did they really really play it? And then you
- 4:19Speaker 4: go and interview people and nobody.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Knows how they fucking played it, you know what I mean.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Everybody's like, I don't know that's how I played it
- 4:25Speaker 4: that day. I didn't. I don't play it that that
- 4:27Speaker 4: was twenty years ago. I don't play it that way now.
- 4:30Speaker 4: So that's been super fun too. It's sort of going
- 4:32Speaker 4: through it and watching the with the actual people, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 4: kind of stumble through it and have to figure it
- 4:39Speaker 4: out too. It's an interesting thing because unlike a normal
- 4:42Speaker 4: podcast where it requires nothing of your guest except to
- 4:46Speaker 4: show up and answer questions. Yeah, that has been an
- 4:49Speaker 4: interesting part of this whole process getting people to do it.
- 4:52Speaker 4: And initially people are like, oh, interview, sure, and then
- 4:54Speaker 4: I'm like, well.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Here's the thing. You have to go back and relearn
- 4:59Speaker 1: your guitar song.
- 5:00Speaker 4: People like, oh, wait a minute, but I've gotten a really,
- 5:04Speaker 4: really good there's gonna be sixteen full interviews for this
- 5:08Speaker 4: first season and we've already banked eleven of them, and the.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Lineup so far as is just like exceeds.
- 5:16Speaker 4: My initial expectations. So you know, you want me to
- 5:19Speaker 4: tell them who's Oh yeah, you know, with with any
- 5:22Speaker 4: of these things, you have like your your master dream
- 5:26Speaker 4: list of the people that you want to interview.
- 5:29Speaker 1: But as I'm sure you.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Know, it's not that easy. You got to get them
- 5:32Speaker 4: to agree to do it.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Right, right right, and learn their solo again.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 5:36Speaker 4: So I have a really big, long list of people
- 5:39Speaker 4: that I want to get to, But let me read
- 5:41Speaker 4: you the names that I've got so far. In the
- 5:45Speaker 4: can I've got Alex Lifson from Rush explaining Limelight, which
- 5:50Speaker 4: just beautiful, Rivers Cuomo from Weezer, Charlie Starr from BlackBerry Smoke,
- 5:56Speaker 4: My good buddy, Charlie Lindsey l who's like a rat
- 6:00Speaker 4: shredder down in Nashville by way of Canada. Ritchie sam Bora, Yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 4: does want of Dead or Alive? That was fun. Nile
- 6:10Speaker 4: Rogers wo and Nile Rodgers was an interesting one because
- 6:13Speaker 4: Nile's not really known for his lead guitar work, so
- 6:16Speaker 4: we didn't really we got into that a little bit,
- 6:18Speaker 4: but it's more him sort of explaining because you know,
- 6:20Speaker 4: he's known as like writing these anthems that we all
- 6:23Speaker 4: a producing and and and as as far as his
- 6:27Speaker 4: guitar playing, it's like really cool.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Did he go get versions of stuff?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Did he go through a specific song?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we did.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I'm coming out Diana Ross Yeah, which has the guitar
- 6:37Speaker 4: playing is great, and he was just he was the
- 6:40Speaker 4: coolest man.
- 6:40Speaker 1: He was amazing.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Blake Schwarzenbach from Jawbreaker, also not a traditional lead guitar player,
- 6:46Speaker 4: which was fun because I didn't want it to just
- 6:48Speaker 4: be I don't want the show to be pigeonholed in
- 6:52Speaker 4: any one genre or even anyone, you know, specific guitar
- 6:56Speaker 4: style or anything. And I wanted to look at some
- 6:59Speaker 4: folks like Blake Schwarzenbach, who who.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Played kind of unorthodox.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You know, there's like, you know, you could kind of
- 7:06Speaker 4: think of them as guitar solo sections, but it's not
- 7:08Speaker 4: really that, you know, it's almost like an additional part.
- 7:11Speaker 4: But then we get back to the rippage with Mike
- 7:14Speaker 4: McCready from Pearl Jam. Yeah, oh yeah, John Osborne from
- 7:19Speaker 4: the Brothers Osborne, who if you don't know The Brothers Osborne,
- 7:21Speaker 4: John Osborne is about the best guitar player out there
- 7:23Speaker 4: in the world today.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I just love the way he plays.
- 7:25Speaker 3: He plays with you with some of your solo stuff too.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Well.
- 7:28Speaker 4: We wrote a song together for many a solo record,
- 7:31Speaker 4: the first one that we put out called black Top
- 7:34Speaker 4: White Lines.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah, although yeah, I.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Should have had him play on it.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It's just me.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Brent Mason, who is again a Nashville legend session player
- 7:47Speaker 4: who you may not know his name, but you definitely
- 7:49Speaker 4: if you listen to country music, especially country music from
- 7:52Speaker 4: like nineties and two thousands. You've heard him all over
- 7:54Speaker 4: the place, you know, he's he's a huge influence to
- 7:57Speaker 4: a lot of other folks. And then just the other
- 7:59Speaker 4: day of the day before we left for tour, I
- 8:01Speaker 4: interviewed Brad Paisley, which is absolutely incredible too.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So that's that's who we have in the can right now.
- 8:08Speaker 1: We have.
- 8:09Speaker 4: To do. That's like eleven people we have to do
- 8:12Speaker 4: find another five, and we've already got confirmations from like
- 8:16Speaker 4: another ten, so you know, probably have to wait until
- 8:19Speaker 4: the second season or whatever to get them all done.
- 8:21Speaker 4: But I mean, there's just like a never ending list
- 8:24Speaker 4: of guitar rippers out there to get you.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I love that. So this is like a utility as well.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's like a tool that I imagine you wish you
- 8:33Speaker 2: had when you were a kid.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's funny because grown up, I took
- 8:38Speaker 4: a lot of guitar lessons, you know, early on, but
- 8:40Speaker 4: I never was one of those players that really learned.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Stuff exactly like the record.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I wouldn't even have known how or what you know
- 8:49Speaker 4: what I mean, you didn't have YouTube and all that stuff.
- 8:52Speaker 4: You didn't have things to slow down the track but
- 8:55Speaker 4: keeping in pitch and all that sort of thing. So
- 8:57Speaker 4: I really started kind of getting into that more later,
- 9:02Speaker 4: like much later, Like when I started playing, I saw
- 9:03Speaker 4: somebody at a Chevy Metal shirt or hat or something
- 9:06Speaker 4: out there. Yeah, when I started playing with Chevy Metal,
- 9:08Speaker 4: and I had to and I had to sit down
- 9:10Speaker 4: and really try to figure out, like, well, how does.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Eddie van Halen play that?
- 9:13Speaker 4: You know? And then that's when I kind of got
- 9:15Speaker 4: turned on to like there's eight million people explaining how
- 9:18Speaker 4: to do the guitar solo from Panama online, but none
- 9:22Speaker 4: of them are actually right, you know, so you just
- 9:24Speaker 4: kind of like take a bit from here and a
- 9:26Speaker 4: bit from there.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And yeah, well that's the nature of how these solos
- 9:29Speaker 2: are done in the studio too.
- 9:30Speaker 3: A lot of times they're comped.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's like you run through the solo five or six
- 9:35Speaker 2: times and then it's actually edited together and that goes
- 9:37Speaker 2: back that's what I do. Thing with technology that's sort
- 9:40Speaker 2: of since they've been splitting tape big time. So as
- 9:43Speaker 2: a kid, you never sat down in your room with
- 9:45Speaker 2: your headphones and dropped the needle and learned smoke on
- 9:48Speaker 2: the water, Like like, what was the first song you
- 9:50Speaker 2: actually learned how to play on guitar.
- 9:52Speaker 1: There wasn't yours. There was the well right, yeah, No.
- 9:56Speaker 4: The first thing I ever learned on guitar, I mean
- 9:59Speaker 4: my first good our teacher when I was eleven, and
- 10:02Speaker 4: I'm so lucky I had a great guitar teacher starting out,
- 10:05Speaker 4: because he taught me all the cowboy chords, you know,
- 10:10Speaker 4: and he taught me like a you know, pentatonic scale.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And once I got through those couple of lessons, he
- 10:16Speaker 4: got me a Beatles songbook Beatles and I still haven't
- 10:19Speaker 4: it's called like Beatles Songbook for Beginners or something like that,
- 10:22Speaker 4: so it's all really kind of like simplified.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Versions of Beatles songs.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And the first one I ever learned was Hey Judeo,
- 10:30Speaker 4: which I still pretty much know the chorse and you
- 10:32Speaker 4: don't realize that when you're learning Beatles songs, but you're
- 10:35Speaker 4: you're just accidentally learning theories, yeah, and how chords flow
- 10:39Speaker 4: into each other and all that stuff.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So yeah, that's amazing.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I remember when I joined New Us for an Am,
- 10:43Speaker 4: which is the band I was in before before Food Fighters,
- 10:48Speaker 4: the singer Tony was also played guitar and he goes
- 10:53Speaker 4: like man no one and our band's ever played like
- 10:56Speaker 4: full chords like that, because I was like, not just
- 10:58Speaker 4: playing the power chord, play all the you know, the
- 11:01Speaker 4: real shapes.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You know, sacrilegs and punk rock, and I totally.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I was in like, you know, like power chord land,
- 11:09Speaker 4: trying to play like you know, seven chords and all
- 11:12Speaker 4: that kind of stuff, which I think might have been
- 11:14Speaker 4: his way of saying, like, can you stop doing that?
- 11:30Speaker 3: So let's talk about that.
- 11:31Speaker 2: We're on the Tivoli Local stage here at Boston Calling,
- 11:35Speaker 2: and you and I both come from different scenes, but
- 11:38Speaker 2: both the sort of punk and hardcore DIY scenes here
- 11:41Speaker 2: on the West coast. I'm on the East coast. What
- 11:43Speaker 2: did you learn from your local scene growing up? What
- 11:46Speaker 2: are some of those lessons that you still carry today.
- 11:49Speaker 4: My local scene in Santa Barbara, California, when I grew
- 11:52Speaker 4: up was fantastic. And but at that time, you know,
- 11:56Speaker 4: at that age when I first started really playing in
- 11:59Speaker 4: bands a lot, I thought it was like Nowheresville, you know.
- 12:03Speaker 1: What I mean, I just like, oh God, I hate
- 12:04Speaker 1: this place.
- 12:05Speaker 4: I just want to get down to La where there's
- 12:07Speaker 4: like poison and guns and Roses are playing and it's cool.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And blah and all that sort of thing.
- 12:12Speaker 4: And but what I didn't realize was the beauty of
- 12:15Speaker 4: where I lived was was like just far enough away
- 12:18Speaker 4: from any kind of major metropolitan area that it was
- 12:20Speaker 4: all just sort.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Of homespun, home cooked version of other stuff. Plus we
- 12:25Speaker 1: had a big college. Yeah, so there was always.
- 12:27Speaker 4: An influx of you know, students out there with their
- 12:29Speaker 4: weird records and stuff that you'd go to parties and
- 12:31Speaker 4: get turned onto all kinds of like weird indie rock
- 12:34Speaker 4: and punk rock and stuff that there wasn't really you know,
- 12:37Speaker 4: it wasn't in my record collection at home. But but yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing was we all just played
- 12:43Speaker 4: all the time.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I mean it was all the time.
- 12:45Speaker 4: You were in two, three, four bands at any given
- 12:47Speaker 4: time and just gigging every weekend and playing keg parties and.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Amazing and uh and doing that whole thing. Yeah, it
- 12:53Speaker 1: was the greatest.
- 12:54Speaker 3: You started. You said you were eleven, Is that right?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Eleven?
- 12:56Speaker 2: So are you You know? I played guitar. I've grown
- 12:59Speaker 2: up with guitar players. Has been around in my whole life,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and there's I'm not the type of guitar player that
- 13:04Speaker 2: I in many ways that you are, But I want
- 13:06Speaker 2: to get specific. I know guys who when they're on
- 13:09Speaker 2: the road, that guitar goes with them everywhere.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Are you that guy? Do you play? How much do
- 13:14Speaker 3: you play off of stage?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Do you bring a guitar like I read that Kirk
- 13:17Speaker 2: Hammett brings that Peter Green less Paul with him, like
- 13:19Speaker 2: into every bed that he sleeps in on the road.
- 13:22Speaker 2: You know, are you that level of obsessed or do
- 13:24Speaker 2: you put it down and come back to it?
- 13:26Speaker 1: I'm that level of obsessed in a sense.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I don't bring a nineteen fifty nine, you know, vintage
- 13:30Speaker 4: Less Paul that once belonged to Peter Green. I bring
- 13:32Speaker 4: my brand new, you know, made out of like plywood,
- 13:36Speaker 4: Fender Acousta Sonic, which is the best, you know, hotel
- 13:40Speaker 4: room guitar of all time.
- 13:41Speaker 1: But no, I always bring a guitar with me and
- 13:43Speaker 1: pretty much always have.
- 13:45Speaker 4: And yeah, like you know, we spend so much time
- 13:48Speaker 4: on the road, and you spend a lot of time
- 13:49Speaker 4: in hotel rooms just wood shedding and noodling around. And
- 13:54Speaker 4: that's where I wound up writing a lot of songs
- 13:56Speaker 4: and working on stuff. And then especially when you're like
- 13:59Speaker 4: where we are, right now now, like at the front
- 14:01Speaker 4: end of going out on the road and with a
- 14:04Speaker 4: new album and a bunch of new songs and all
- 14:05Speaker 4: this stuff, I'll be sitting in my room just trying
- 14:08Speaker 4: to remember parts, keeping it in my hands.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like it's almost like an athlete. You have
- 14:13Speaker 2: to keep your body and your muscle memory.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Yeah, speed right. I went.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I went on a spring break vacation trip with my
- 14:19Speaker 4: family recently. Where we went we were down in Costa
- 14:23Speaker 4: Rica for about a week, just surfing and hanging around,
- 14:26Speaker 4: and it was weird not having a guitar. Yeah, you know,
- 14:29Speaker 4: I never I pretty much played just all the time. Well,
- 14:34Speaker 4: I'm sitting home and watching TV. I'm annoying my wife
- 14:37Speaker 4: around on guitar.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I knew that.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I knew that was you staring at the TV. I
- 14:40Speaker 2: heard that's how John Bryan learned how to write songs.
- 14:42Speaker 2: He just as a kid played in front of the
- 14:44Speaker 2: television all the time, and it all kind of seeps
- 14:47Speaker 2: in that.
- 14:48Speaker 1: That'd be another good guy for the new show.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Who were the sort of like dream interviews for you?
- 14:53Speaker 4: Oh god, there's so many, I mean, all of any
- 14:58Speaker 4: classic rock you know, A chief Blackmore.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Would be amazing. Jimmy Page would be amazing.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Brian May you know all the folks that I listened
- 15:07Speaker 4: to grown up, especially in that in that you know,
- 15:10Speaker 4: who is thus far completely underrepresented is like eighties heavy
- 15:15Speaker 4: metal guitar player.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I haven't.
- 15:17Speaker 4: I've reached out to a bunch of those dudes, but
- 15:19Speaker 4: I haven't landed one yet.
- 15:20Speaker 1: It's a little weird. I thought, like, I thought that
- 15:22Speaker 1: that would be the easiest. You know, there's just that's
- 15:25Speaker 1: that's like the guitar hero era. I thought that would
- 15:27Speaker 1: be like pretty simple to lamb. But I haven't haven't
- 15:29Speaker 1: landed any of them yet.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Eddie's dead. Who's the guy? Well, I mean, we'll tweet
- 15:33Speaker 3: at him, we'll get a pet.
- 15:35Speaker 4: You can't get Eddie Van and you can't get Randy Rose.
- 15:37Speaker 4: And those were probably my top two. But you know,
- 15:41Speaker 4: Inbay Mountainstein would be great. Jakie Lee would be great,
- 15:46Speaker 4: Warren d. Martini, John Sykes, you get a little later.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Slash I would really like it. And you know I'm
- 15:52Speaker 4: bugging his Believe you me, I'm bugging Slash as publicist.
- 15:54Speaker 1: It seems like every other week.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a bunch of them. I mean, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 4: any of those folks that I grew up listening to,
- 16:02Speaker 4: I would love And you know, although I'm trying to
- 16:07Speaker 4: not get pigeonholed in anyone genre, and we certainly like
- 16:11Speaker 4: rock and country music are the ones that I know
- 16:14Speaker 4: the most, and country music has always embraced ripping guitar playing.
- 16:19Speaker 4: So there's a lot of those folks that I want
- 16:21Speaker 4: to get to. And then people that I just don't know.
- 16:23Speaker 4: I don't know who like the go to pop guitar
- 16:25Speaker 4: player is, maybe you do, Maybe send somebody mine, I
- 16:28Speaker 4: don't know.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You know, who do you guys want to hear? Yeah?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Who do you guys want to hear?
- 16:31Speaker 3: You want to hear? Who do you want to hear?
- 16:33Speaker 3: Chris interview for guitar players.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Who I pitched her pitch?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Well, not her herself, but her publicist. Yeah, they are
- 16:43Speaker 4: aware of it. John Mayer, I think we pitched him too. Yeah,
- 16:47Speaker 4: that'd be great. Tom Morello, that'd be great. The Edge,
- 16:50Speaker 4: I think we pitched the Edge, not And again when
- 16:53Speaker 4: I say pitched that person, that person doesn't know who
- 16:56Speaker 4: the fuck I am and has never heard of my show.
- 16:59Speaker 4: So it's not like that. But you know, it's their
- 17:02Speaker 4: their representatives. That's the biz kids. You got to go
- 17:05Speaker 4: through the representatives. And so I think, honestly, the majority
- 17:08Speaker 4: of people that I've interviewed for this thing are people
- 17:10Speaker 4: whose phone number I have, because I could bypass that
- 17:13Speaker 4: whole like.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The publicists going, so, how when's this coming out? It's
- 17:19Speaker 1: a pod what's a podcast?
- 17:20Speaker 4: It's a what is it a podcaster? Or video show?
- 17:23Speaker 4: Can you send me a link? Like it doesn't exist yet?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Well, fuck you. That has been honestly, that has been
- 17:31Speaker 1: one of.
- 17:31Speaker 4: The funnest parts of this because when I started walking
- 17:34Speaker 4: the floor, you know, I'd never interviewed anybody.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Podcasting was pretty new.
- 17:38Speaker 4: I didn't know anybody who's mostly focused on like Americana
- 17:41Speaker 4: and country music, and I didn't know anybody in that world,
- 17:44Speaker 4: so I didn't have any context. So it took me
- 17:46Speaker 4: a couple of years to get to know, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 4: the publicists that work a lot, and eventually I developed
- 17:52Speaker 4: relationships and then.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It got a lot easier to book people.
- 17:55Speaker 4: And then you know, you get into the thing where
- 17:57Speaker 4: you're getting pitched more than you can actually do, which
- 18:00Speaker 4: is great. With this, it's it's fricking starting over because
- 18:04Speaker 4: there is no link you can send them. There's no website,
- 18:06Speaker 4: there's no you know. It's just like, Hey, I've got
- 18:08Speaker 4: this kooky idea, and guess what. Your client has to
- 18:11Speaker 4: do a bunch of homework before they come on, and
- 18:13Speaker 4: it's gonna be on video, so they have to worry
- 18:15Speaker 4: about how they look, and they need an AMP and
- 18:17Speaker 4: a guitar and they need a digit of the audio
- 18:19Speaker 4: interface and blob blah blah.
- 18:21Speaker 3: You know.
- 18:21Speaker 4: So yeah, it's that part of it has been super fun,
- 18:24Speaker 4: just starting over.
- 18:25Speaker 2: So who do we say the edge? Tom Morello, John
- 18:28Speaker 2: Mayer her that's the list.
- 18:30Speaker 4: But those are all people on my list. Come on, people,
- 18:33Speaker 4: let's come up with some folks. I'm not thinking of
- 18:37Speaker 4: Don Daniel Donado, who said that he's on the list.
- 18:39Speaker 4: I already talked to him, booked Mick marrs on the list,
- 18:44Speaker 4: pitched him.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Who who oh wow, that's a good one. John is
- 18:52Speaker 1: he a lead guitar player?
- 18:54Speaker 4: Okay, all right, John Sante John for Schante is on
- 18:57Speaker 4: the list.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Haven't heard back. John.
- 18:59Speaker 4: If you're watch, if you're out there in the crowd,
- 19:02Speaker 4: if you're looking at this on Instagram, give me a ring, buddy.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Yes, there we go.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, yes, uh yet. Actually I asked Pat
- 19:13Speaker 4: the other day for a new nose number. I haven't
- 19:15Speaker 4: pitched him yet, but for sure local guy.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and you got Rivers. Rivers graduated from Harvard over here.
- 19:21Speaker 1: All right?
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So okay, So you've played with a bunch of
- 19:25Speaker 2: You've met a bunch of these dudes, You've been on
- 19:26Speaker 2: stage with a bunch of these dudes. I gotta I
- 19:29Speaker 2: know you a little bit, and I know you're a
- 19:31Speaker 2: fucking guitar freak.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Like you're a fan, right you must.
- 19:34Speaker 2: How do you control the fan side of you and
- 19:37Speaker 2: just maintain the cool professional size.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It's really hard.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if I always control it, man,
- 19:44Speaker 4: Sometimes it just gets the vast yea.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Anyone you can recall being on stage with where you've
- 19:49Speaker 2: just been, Like, I talked to a guy the other
- 19:51Speaker 2: night who told me he was on stage with Springsteen
- 19:53Speaker 2: once when he was a kid, a fluke thing, and
- 19:55Speaker 2: he literally went up to his zamp and he turned
- 19:57Speaker 2: it down so he could just listen to the b us.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Oh man, There's been so many over the years, it's
- 20:04Speaker 4: it's hard to even pick. When Mick Jagger was a
- 20:06Speaker 4: huge one, you know when we got to back him up. Yeah,
- 20:09Speaker 4: that was like just you know, it doesn't get much
- 20:12Speaker 4: better than that.
- 20:13Speaker 2: You find yourself just watching more than you're you're trying
- 20:15Speaker 2: to remember the Rift of Brown Sugar.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Would you remember what song you did?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Oh? We did? What did we did?
- 20:21Speaker 4: We did I think Mother's Little Helper and then we
- 20:24Speaker 4: did that, we did like part of that and then
- 20:26Speaker 4: it's only rock and roll.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Nice.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah, very cool, Yeah, which is great.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Very That would have the only way that would have
- 20:32Speaker 4: been cooler is if Keith was there.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Well yeah, I never met Keith Richard. He'd be he'd
- 20:36Speaker 4: be good for the show. Yeah, fantastic, as would Mick Taylor.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Or Ron Wood or any of those cats.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Man, I'm that Stones is kind of like for me,
- 20:43Speaker 4: that's the tippy top, that's the apex.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll make it happen. We're gonna make it happen.
- 20:48Speaker 1: That's right.
- 20:48Speaker 3: We're trying to do that.
- 20:49Speaker 4: If any of you folks out there know Keith Richards,
- 20:52Speaker 4: give my number.
- 20:54Speaker 3: I think it's parole officers somewhere. Figure that out.
- 20:57Speaker 2: So you have you have kids, one they play playing music,
- 21:01Speaker 2: but once once again re engaged in guitar playing yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 2: tell us, and he's a teenager. Tell us, tell us
- 21:07Speaker 2: what it's like from your perspective, as you know, you're
- 21:10Speaker 2: in the freaking Foo fighters watching your kid learn.
- 21:12Speaker 3: How to play guitar. What's he like?
- 21:14Speaker 4: It's been really fun because we made all our kids
- 21:17Speaker 4: take piano and guitar lessons when they were real young,
- 21:20Speaker 4: and none of them really dug it, and especially my.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Youngest like he was so he just I mean, he's
- 21:26Speaker 1: just me.
- 21:26Speaker 4: He hates taking like at that age, he hates taking
- 21:30Speaker 4: lessons and he hates he basically hates teachers.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Right of all stypes.
- 21:36Speaker 4: And we had this guy that was the sweetest dude,
- 21:39Speaker 4: this guy Nick, that would come to our house and
- 21:42Speaker 4: give my kids guitar lessons like in the in the
- 21:44Speaker 4: in the dining room and he would come over and
- 21:47Speaker 4: he's just the sweetest guy, always smiling, bringing his little
- 21:50Speaker 4: like gigbag acoustic guitar and be like a man.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It's time for your guitar lesson. And he'd be upstairs
- 21:55Speaker 1: and he'd be like, I hate that guy. I'm not
- 21:58Speaker 1: coming down, oh no.
- 22:01Speaker 4: And so that didn't last too long and he drifted
- 22:05Speaker 4: away from it, but he's recently picked it.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Back up on his own accord.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Yeah, And honestly, that's kind of part of the inspiration
- 22:12Speaker 4: this whole thing. He he watches a bunch of people
- 22:15Speaker 4: on YouTube explain how to play things, and then he'll
- 22:19Speaker 4: learn it, and then he'll quiz me on it, and
- 22:21Speaker 4: then I'll have to go figure it out. But like,
- 22:23Speaker 4: you know, I interviewed Blake from Jawbreaker, and he explained
- 22:27Speaker 4: how to play accident Prone, which is, like, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 4: one of my favorite Jobreaker songs, and the reason I
- 22:33Speaker 4: wanted to do that song and part of the reason,
- 22:35Speaker 4: I mean, I love Blake and I love Jobbreaker, but
- 22:36Speaker 4: part of the reasons because my son's obsessed with Jawbreaker
- 22:39Speaker 4: and he had asked me to figure out how to
- 22:41Speaker 4: play accident Prone and show him, and we had watched
- 22:44Speaker 4: somebody online explain it, you know, pretty close to right,
- 22:47Speaker 4: but I knew it wasn't quite right, So I was like,
- 22:50Speaker 4: and Blake's a lefty, and you know, it's it's just cool,
- 22:53Speaker 4: you know, So yeah, watching watching my son go down.
- 22:57Speaker 3: That road is fun.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Yeah, And he doesn't have any of my cultural baggage
- 23:00Speaker 4: with anything, so he'll like listen to old records from
- 23:03Speaker 4: the wrong period like, I'm like, no, you don't listen
- 23:05Speaker 4: to tears are falling.
- 23:07Speaker 1: You listen to strutter, you.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Know, and some of that kind of about it. I
- 23:10Speaker 4: just keep my mouth shut, you know what I mean.
- 23:12Speaker 4: He'll get to it, He'll figure it.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Yeah, he'll get to it, all right.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Shred with Shifty videos on Volume dot com.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Yes, Volume dot com. Yes, I don't know if we
- 23:22Speaker 4: mentioned them yet. Video will live on Volume dot Com
- 23:25Speaker 4: and then there's gonna be a podcast version of it.
- 23:27Speaker 1: But really you're gonna want to and I interview.
- 23:29Speaker 4: The folks too a bit in there, and then we
- 23:31Speaker 4: get into the weeds with guitar stuff, and you're gonna
- 23:33Speaker 4: want to watch their hands.
- 23:34Speaker 1: People. It's the most important part.
- 23:36Speaker 2: This guy's bringing you a new utility. Everyone can be
