Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We've been traveling for two days. We're 154 kilometers from Thompson, Canada,
- 0:09Speaker 1: where we're going to stay the night. In the morning,
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm going to catch a float plane out with Craig
- 0:16Speaker 1: McCarthy with North Mountain Adventures, and we're going to see
- 0:21Speaker 1: if we can't get a moose hemmed up here in
- 0:24Speaker 1: northern Manitoba. It's a very remote place. It is as
- 0:29Speaker 1: wild as wild gets in North America. It's hard to
- 0:33Speaker 1: believe that this is really taking place. And I don't
- 0:36Speaker 1: know if I'll fully realize it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Until we get in camp. But I'm a long ways
- 0:44Speaker 2: from home.
- 0:46Speaker 1: What you just saw was a clip from Hunting Bull
- 0:49Speaker 1: Moose in Manitoba, my 12 and 26 films sponsored by
- 0:53Speaker 1: Moultrie and Onyx. And what we're doing now is the
- 0:57Speaker 1: companion podcast that's going to answer some questions and maybe
- 1:01Speaker 1: show some things that didn't wind up in the final cut.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And I'm joined by my good friend, Josh Landbridge Spillmaker.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well, I'm excited to be here, Brent. I really love
- 1:12Speaker 3: the film.
- 1:13Speaker 4: It did a great job capturing not just the hunt,
- 1:17Speaker 4: but all the surrounding things to go with it. The scenery,
- 1:21Speaker 4: the camaraderie, everything about it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: It was just, it was a information overload for a
- 1:26Speaker 1: little while.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I'll say, I'll say, but we're, uh, we're really excited to, uh,
- 1:30Speaker 4: to do this podcast because we've got some great questions
- 1:34Speaker 4: from some of the viewers and, uh, we're going to
- 1:37Speaker 4: give you an opportunity just to, you know, it's hard
- 1:39Speaker 4: to catch a, how long was the hunt total?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh man. We were there for like, I think the
- 1:43Speaker 2: whole trip was like nine days.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:45Speaker 4: So we, It's hard to capture all that in 42 minutes.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And so, uh, we're going to give you an opportunity
- 1:50Speaker 4: just to tell us more than we could see in
- 1:52Speaker 4: the film, but, um, it's a pretty different kind of
- 1:55Speaker 4: adventure for you growing up here in Arkansas.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Um, early on in your career, you spent a lot
- 2:01Speaker 4: of time documenting other people's hunts and you kind of
- 2:05Speaker 4: go into that in the film, but, uh, this time
- 2:07Speaker 4: you're the, the guy carrying the rifle. So, um, before we, uh,
- 2:13Speaker 4: we're going to, I've got a couple of questions for
- 2:15Speaker 4: you before we we kind of dive into it.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:18Speaker 3: How did this.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Kind of come about? How did you get, uh, how
- 2:23Speaker 4: did you like, Hey, I want to go to Manitoba
- 2:25Speaker 4: and hunt.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Man.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Uh, it all started like in February a year ago.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And Garrett long, my boss calls me and he says,
- 2:35Speaker 1: we need to come up with an idea for a project. Some, some,
- 2:39Speaker 1: some film projects that we're going to film throughout the year.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And I need, what's your dream hunt. And I'm like,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I don't know. I'll think about it. Oh, I got it.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean, it was just that, that was how, that's
- 2:51Speaker 1: how it went. I said, I want to go shoot
- 2:53Speaker 1: a moose and, and, uh, Northern Manitoba with Craig McCarthy.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And now the.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Response I was waiting to hear was like, uh, how
- 3:02Speaker 1: about we do something in Missouri, you know, a little
- 3:05Speaker 1: closer to home. But Garrett's response was okay. Get ahold
- 3:08Speaker 1: of Craig and let's start working out the details. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: I'm like, so that again, and if, and if from that,
- 3:15Speaker 1: it just went from, initial meetings with Craig and producer,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and we just started getting the ball rolling and making
- 3:23Speaker 1: a plan and it came to fruition.
- 3:26Speaker 3: That's incredible.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 4: What was kind of different about you? I know you
- 3:33Speaker 4: filmed quite a bit in Canada, not necessarily in Northern Manitoba,
- 3:37Speaker 4: but you've filmed a lot in Canada. How was it
- 3:40Speaker 4: different preparing for this knowing that you were gonna be
- 3:43Speaker 4: the shooter?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Well, to me, being a cinematographer, which I don't claim
- 3:49Speaker 1: to be, I was a cameraman and I think, I
- 3:51Speaker 1: think there's a difference, you know, but prepping myself to
- 3:56Speaker 1: go film a hunt like that. I just had to
- 3:59Speaker 1: get the mindset that, that I'm always working.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That, you know, the hunt is not when you leave,
- 4:05Speaker 1: walk out the camp door or the tent or whatever
- 4:08Speaker 1: with a gun in your hand, when you're there to
- 4:10Speaker 1: document the whole hunt, that's all of it. So, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you've got to be on the ready. You got to,
- 4:15Speaker 1: You're the first guy up in the morning. You're the
- 4:17Speaker 1: last guy to go to bed at night. You're the last,
- 4:20Speaker 1: most of your meals are going to be cold because
- 4:22Speaker 1: you're filming everybody else doing all that kind of stuff.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So it is a totally different situation that, that you
- 4:29Speaker 1: had to prepare for us. You just got to get
- 4:30Speaker 1: your mind right. That if it don't happen on camera,
- 4:34Speaker 1: then it didn't happen.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:36Speaker 1: You know, that's the way you got to look at it. And,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I want to think, I can't remember exactly, Josh, but
- 4:42Speaker 1: I think Dave Gardner shot like 26. Dave Gardner was
- 4:45Speaker 1: your cameraman. He was my cameraman on this. It was me,
- 4:48Speaker 1: Dave Gardner, and Craig McCarthy in this.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Excuse me, videographer.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, cinematographer. Cinematographer. Shout out to Dave Gardner.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Extraordinary.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, for real.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But I think it's like 26 hours of video or
- 5:02Speaker 1: film that he shot. And they condensed that down to
- 5:06Speaker 1: 42 minutes. I mean, it's incredible, incredible.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Well, that's awesome.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Well, let's go ahead and dive into another clip here.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Man, the amount of stuff it takes to do this
- 5:32Speaker 1: is monumental, especially if we're trying to document a film
- 5:37Speaker 1: like this. It's already going to be a good trip regardless.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So a lot of folks ready to go, me included.
- 5:45Speaker 3: You're Arkansas?
- 5:48Speaker 2: It's been a.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Long time, no see.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Hey, brother.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Good to see you.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You too.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Great that's a great clip uh one of the things
- 6:07Speaker 4: that i noticed right away was how remote yeah this
- 6:11Speaker 4: place was yeah i'm flying in and out um no
- 6:15Speaker 4: roads road systems i mean you you fly in live
- 6:19Speaker 4: out of camp um and your boat becomes your primary
- 6:22Speaker 4: way of getting around um and then the whole process
- 6:27Speaker 4: that goes into loading these planes and getting everything off
- 6:30Speaker 4: and um What, what were the logistical, what was the
- 6:34Speaker 4: logistics of putting together a hunt like this?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I mean, you think about, there's always been in this
- 6:41Speaker 1: business and I learned it very early that you're either
- 6:46Speaker 1: hunting or you're filming a hunt. And that is two
- 6:50Speaker 1: totally different things. If you're just hunting, you're just going to,
- 6:54Speaker 1: you capture what you capture. If you're trying to tell
- 6:57Speaker 1: a story, then you've got to film everything. So there's
- 7:00Speaker 1: going to be equipment and batteries and camera batteries and
- 7:03Speaker 1: stuff that are going to take the place maybe of clothes,
- 7:07Speaker 1: of other things that you wanted to bring. I want
- 7:09Speaker 1: to bring, you know, X, Y, Z, but you don't
- 7:13Speaker 1: have room for it. And you got to make a
- 7:15Speaker 1: choice between clean underwear and batteries.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Batteries are going to win every time.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And you're just taking a, you're taking a bath in
- 7:22Speaker 1: the Creek, you know, and washing your clothes in the lake.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And that's that, that kind of stuff goes into it.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And it goes into the, whole thought process of okay
- 7:32Speaker 1: maybe i can wear.
- 7:32Speaker 2: A pair of britches for three days right you know and.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And i actually did a podcast about it about when
- 7:38Speaker 1: i came back about the things that i would have
- 7:40Speaker 1: done different and i i took way too many clothes
- 7:44Speaker 1: and i would take i would cut that back and
- 7:46Speaker 1: just you know washing the wash in the in the
- 7:49Speaker 1: lake rinse off dry let it air dry and then
- 7:52Speaker 1: go that route but You really prioritize the things that
- 7:56Speaker 1: you need to document because if you run out of
- 7:58Speaker 1: lens wipes or if you run out of batteries or
- 8:01Speaker 1: if you run out of, you know, your B camera,
- 8:04Speaker 1: you got more than one camera there. If you run
- 8:06Speaker 1: out of things to document that, I mean, it's not,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you don't, you don't call up FedEx and have them
- 8:12Speaker 1: ship you another one in. Run down to Best Buy. Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Cause you know, from where we took off there in Thompson,
- 8:17Speaker 1: we were in that float plane for another two hours before.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Oh, wow. Oh yeah.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It was out there, you know? Not in a straight line.
- 8:25Speaker 1: We went to several other camps and dropped some stuff off,
- 8:27Speaker 1: but it was, you don't just, if you don't bring it,
- 8:30Speaker 1: if you don't have it.
- 8:30Speaker 2: With you, you don't have it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Right.
- 8:32Speaker 1: So, and usually one is none and two is one.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So you, you usually you're doubling up.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Right. So you can be sure.
- 8:39Speaker 5: That you have.
- 8:39Speaker 2: On the necessities. To have, yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 4: So one of the things that I know and love
- 8:44Speaker 4: about you, Brent, is that you are, you really value relationships.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Tell us how you met Craig.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Oh, man, I went up on a bear hunt with
- 8:52Speaker 1: Craig and his wife, Mel, and their place.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, North Mountain Adventures there. And I guess it's kind
- 8:59Speaker 1: of in the bottom third of Manitoba there. And their family, Craig, Melanie, Hayden,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and Kirsten, they're just, man, they are just an ideal
- 9:14Speaker 1: outdoor family.
- 9:15Speaker 2: They're wonderful.
- 9:17Speaker 1: The hosting that they have there and the places they
- 9:20Speaker 1: have to hunt is just beyond anything. And they're just
- 9:22Speaker 1: good down to earth people. So we hit it off,
- 9:26Speaker 1: you know, right from, from the get go. The only,
- 9:29Speaker 1: our only difference is, you know, we talk different and
- 9:31Speaker 1: they have an accent and I don't, but we just
- 9:34Speaker 1: became good friends. And then when this opportunity came up
- 9:38Speaker 1: to be able to go on a moose hunt, there
- 9:39Speaker 1: was one guy that I wanted to do it with.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah. And that, that's how it happened.
- 9:43Speaker 1: That's really cool. That's really cool.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Um, So when you're this remote, you said you were
- 9:48Speaker 3: out there for nine days. What does a typical.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Day look like when you're out there hunting?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Well, hunting moose, man, you you you get up pretty
- 9:57Speaker 1: early uh i mean it's not like a duck hunt
- 10:00Speaker 1: where you're two hours before daylight you get up right
- 10:02Speaker 1: before daylight and kind of get a bite to eat
- 10:04Speaker 1: and you let the you want to get some daylight
- 10:07Speaker 1: where you can you can see the shore you know
- 10:10Speaker 1: when when you leave the camp you get out and
- 10:12Speaker 1: you go and we're going to different spots along the
- 10:15Speaker 1: shore and if weather's right and it's and uh and
- 10:19Speaker 1: you can see uh you know you may be able
- 10:21Speaker 1: you may spot a moose before you ever set up
- 10:23Speaker 1: to call one now we didn't we didn't see him
- 10:26Speaker 1: uh the first two or three days we were there
- 10:28Speaker 1: uh so we would just go to different spots along
- 10:31Speaker 1: the lake and call and we'd set into one spot
- 10:34Speaker 1: and i talked to even in the film i'm talking
- 10:37Speaker 1: to craig about it you know asking him how long
- 10:39Speaker 1: he likes to stay in one spot after we do
- 10:41Speaker 1: a call and it's right i would think you know
- 10:44Speaker 1: 45 minutes you know or But he's like, no, two hours.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And it's the way.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Those bulls react to a call. It's just so slow
- 10:56Speaker 1: and methodical. I mean, they can hear it a long ways,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but they're usually not just, okay, I hear a cow
- 11:02Speaker 1: running over there. No, he's just going to start easing
- 11:05Speaker 1: his way that way. And he may be a mile
- 11:08Speaker 1: away from it or more.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Right. And just start easing his way.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And you were there what time of year?
- 11:16Speaker 2: That was in late September.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Is that, is that like peak for the rut?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I think it's the kind of toward the end of it.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Cause everybody, we were the last hunt for that, for
- 11:27Speaker 1: Craig's outfit up there, his father's outfit up there. So,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and anytime I was talking to someone, they'd say, oh,
- 11:33Speaker 1: you're going to, when are you going to hunt this moose?
- 11:36Speaker 2: And I'd say, oh, we're leaving.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I think it was like the 18th or 19th of
- 11:40Speaker 1: January or September, something like that. And they go, oh,
- 11:43Speaker 1: you're going late. I'm like, golly, that seems early. But
- 11:47Speaker 1: you take into account the weather up there in October
- 11:52Speaker 1: as opposed to how it is down here. There's quite
- 11:55Speaker 1: a difference. So it was a tail end of the rut,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but bulls were really active. And as you can see,
- 12:03Speaker 1: it paid off pretty well.
- 12:05Speaker 4: So, um, you, you traveled with your rifle on several
- 12:08Speaker 4: different airplanes. There's a scene in the, in the, in
- 12:10Speaker 4: the film where you want to go just check your
- 12:13Speaker 4: zero on it. Um, what, what, uh, a lot of
- 12:17Speaker 4: questions about what caliber, what rifle you were shooting, what caliber,
- 12:22Speaker 4: and why was it important to you to check the zero?
- 12:25Speaker 1: So Sig Sauer cross and 300 PRC, which was the
- 12:30Speaker 1: largest round I've ever shot, you know, in a, in
- 12:33Speaker 1: a civilian rifle. And when I looked at it, I thought,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, that's probably a moose round right there.
- 12:39Speaker 3: As big as it is.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But I sighted it in with my friend who lives
- 12:44Speaker 1: here not far from my house here. And he actually
- 12:46Speaker 1: works for SIG. He's an engineer for SIG here at
- 12:50Speaker 1: their Arkansas ammunition plant. And Matt Burns, who's a competitive
- 12:54Speaker 1: shooter and just a man, he's just so knowledgeable about it.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But he's got a little range at his house. And
- 13:00Speaker 1: we went there. I went there and sighted that thing in.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And the whole time we were traveling, you know, from
- 13:07Speaker 1: plane to plane, I'm looking out the window and I'm
- 13:09Speaker 1: watching them load stuff. I'm like, that guy right there
- 13:12Speaker 1: is not concerned whether my rifle stays on zero or not. But, uh,
- 13:17Speaker 1: we got, that was the first thing that I wanted
- 13:20Speaker 1: to do once I got there. And you can actually
- 13:22Speaker 1: in Canada, uh, in Manitoba, that is, you can hunt
- 13:26Speaker 1: the same day you fly in as long as you
- 13:29Speaker 1: don't use that aircraft to, you know, spot anything, which
- 13:32Speaker 1: we didn't see anything.
- 13:34Speaker 2: But you can, uh, it's legal to do that.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So as soon as we got settled in camp, I mean,
- 13:40Speaker 1: Dave pushed record and we started, we started hunting right then.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Where, uh, what distance did you have your rifle zeroed
- 13:48Speaker 3: in at?
- 13:48Speaker 2: I sighted it in.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It was, I could shoot out to 700 yards on
- 13:53Speaker 1: Matt's course. And we shot a hundred. If it's good
- 13:57Speaker 1: at a hundred, Matt said it's good at 700. And
- 14:00Speaker 1: I shot both at his house and. That was what
- 14:03Speaker 1: we did there.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Based on the ballistic calculator?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, based on all that. We did it there once
- 14:07Speaker 1: we got into camp, and it was good to go. Awesome.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Well, that's cool.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Let's go ahead and hit this next clip.
- 14:19Speaker 1: We talked about this earlier, and I've heard you explain
- 14:21Speaker 1: it to other folks, or talking about going and calling,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and then at night, and then leaving and coming back
- 14:28Speaker 1: to that spot.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Is that more like putting bait out?
- 14:31Speaker 6: Yeah, pretty much. Unless he's right there, you're not going
- 14:35Speaker 6: to get him right away. But he could be two miles.
- 14:38Speaker 6: And if it's dead calm and he hears you, and
- 14:41Speaker 6: moose aren't fast, when they're coming, he'll start grunting and
- 14:44Speaker 6: slowly make his way there. So we leave in the morning.
- 14:47Speaker 6: He's probably coming if he heard you.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:50Speaker 6: And then when we go back in the afternoon or
- 14:52Speaker 6: the next morning, he's probably within a couple hundred yards
- 14:57Speaker 6: of where you were calling from.
- 14:59Speaker 1: What's your pitch or Perfect weather for calling moose in
- 15:03Speaker 1: the rut.
- 15:04Speaker 5: What are you looking for?
- 15:06Speaker 8: Below zero temperatures and dead calm.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Celsius?
- 15:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So 32 or under and no wind.
- 15:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Now, I don't, I don't want to be presumptuous here.
- 15:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I've spent quite a bit of time practicing a turkey
- 15:43Speaker 4: call and a duck call.
- 15:46Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 3: And don't claim to be good at either one.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I think I could get that one down.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I've got, man, I've got videos of folks with their
- 15:55Speaker 1: kids blowing through a toilet, toilet paper roll. Like, how's
- 16:00Speaker 1: my moose calling? It sounds good. And Craig will be
- 16:03Speaker 1: the first to tell you. It's all you got to
- 16:06Speaker 1: do with a minimum amount of practice to call one up.
- 16:10Speaker 1: And it was the thing that got me so much
- 16:14Speaker 1: is something that I just keep beating the hair off
- 16:17Speaker 1: of is it's like calling turkeys right now, going back
- 16:23Speaker 1: to camp, going to bed, and getting up the next morning,
- 16:26Speaker 1: going back and sitting by that tree and shooting him
- 16:27Speaker 1: when he walks up. I mean, it's just so out
- 16:32Speaker 1: of the ordinary. That's what I kept thinking about.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I mean, it's pretty amazing that you can put.
- 16:36Speaker 3: A call out and 12 hours.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Later that Moose is coming. Yeah, yeah, he's coming. Or
- 16:43Speaker 1: 24 hours.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It was.
- 16:47Speaker 1: When we would leave and there's something in there, and
- 16:51Speaker 1: I don't know if we're going to get to something that,
- 16:54Speaker 1: didn't make it into the film that i wish would
- 16:57Speaker 1: have if this is a good time to cover it
- 16:59Speaker 1: now but one afternoon and i can't remember now if
- 17:07Speaker 1: it was the day after i think it was a
- 17:09Speaker 1: couple days after uh that i actually killed a bull
- 17:13Speaker 1: we were going down that river the same river and
- 17:17Speaker 1: we just pulled up on the bank and craig made
- 17:20Speaker 1: a call and then we went on fishing down the
- 17:23Speaker 1: and as we left dave's filming him and craig says
- 17:27Speaker 1: there'll be a bull here when we come back and
- 17:29Speaker 1: we laughed dave laughed i laughed craig laughed we went
- 17:33Speaker 1: fishing we came back there was a bull there three
- 17:36Speaker 1: hours later really yeah we got some footage of him
- 17:39Speaker 1: from the boat and but i wish that would have
- 17:41Speaker 1: made it in craig saying that but he because i
- 17:44Speaker 1: mean you like oh this guy's got esp oh that
- 17:47Speaker 1: that's awesome it was pretty it was pretty funny were.
- 17:50Speaker 4: There ever any You know, when you're throwing these cow
- 17:53Speaker 4: calls out there, was there ever any, before you saw
- 17:57Speaker 4: one respond to it like that, was there any doubt
- 18:00Speaker 4: in your mind that you're like, eh?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you trust the guide.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I was a duck guide for so long that I
- 18:08Speaker 1: knew not, if I've got a client with me, I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: not going to tell him something that's not true. You've
- 18:14Speaker 1: got to be honest because in the course of of
- 18:18Speaker 1: being in the wilderness, being outside and dealing with nature,
- 18:22Speaker 1: the truth is going to come out.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Right.
- 18:24Speaker 1: So I had to do nothing but trust what he said. And,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you know, I would be thinking, Oh, we need to
- 18:30Speaker 1: get up and move in my mind. I'm thinking we
- 18:32Speaker 1: should get up and move. Right. The next thought would be,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I should pay attention to Craig because he does this
- 18:36Speaker 1: for a living.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Exactly. And that gets us wrong.
- 18:40Speaker 3: He doesn't get paid.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Right.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 18:41Speaker 1: So, I mean, it's, You never guide the guide, and
- 18:44Speaker 1: that's something I always keep in the forefront of what
- 18:47Speaker 1: we're doing, and I'm trying to learn. I learned so
- 18:50Speaker 1: much from being a turkey hunter or a whitetail hunter.
- 18:55Speaker 1: You've got to be patient a lot of times. But
- 18:58Speaker 1: I learned patience from him up there, especially when you're
- 19:03Speaker 1: making a call that could have an effect 24 hours later.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Sure.
- 19:08Speaker 2: It was really cool to see.
- 19:10Speaker 4: So Craig mentioned, you know, his ideal calling conditions were,
- 19:13Speaker 4: you know, zero degrees Celsius, 32 degrees Fahrenheit, dead calm.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Why those conditions?
- 19:18Speaker 4: Obviously the dead calm makes sense.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think it's the sound carries and it's, uh, they
- 19:23Speaker 1: seem to be active during that time, you know, during,
- 19:27Speaker 1: with that temperature, they're most active. And obviously with the,
- 19:30Speaker 1: the sound will go not just downwind, but in every direction.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Now, was that from your first day hunting?
- 19:37Speaker 2: That was. Okay.
- 19:38Speaker 3: So first day was just call and wait.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Yeah, call and wait. Okay. We got there that afternoon.
- 19:45Speaker 1: We went over and across the lake. We never hunted that.
- 19:50Speaker 1: side of the lake again because of the wind. We
- 19:53Speaker 1: were facing into the wind there and we were right
- 19:56Speaker 1: on the edge. We had the lake right behind us,
- 20:00Speaker 1: the edge. We were calling across that tundra or whatever
- 20:04Speaker 1: technical term that is for that part of Canada there.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And They had, you can see forever, but I mean,
- 20:14Speaker 1: in that also in that instance, I mean, you can
- 20:17Speaker 1: see that the wide open country, but something big as
- 20:20Speaker 1: a moose can just all of a sudden just slip
- 20:22Speaker 1: up on you.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, so it was.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Now, is this private land or public land?
- 20:27Speaker 2: It's all public. It's all public land.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And I'm not sure if it's native land or whatever,
- 20:33Speaker 1: if they have a lease or whatever it is, but
- 20:36Speaker 1: it's like a concession that they hunt up there. Okay.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So, I mean, they're the only folks allowed in that part.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Like, give us an idea of how big of an
- 20:45Speaker 3: area you were hunting.
- 20:46Speaker 1: As big as the world is. As big as outside.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I mean, there was thousands of acre miles of what,
- 20:55Speaker 1: unnamed lakes and unnamed rivers and just wilderness, absolute wilderness.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And from the time you left Thompson in that airplane,
- 21:06Speaker 1: that float plane flying at a little over 3,000 feet,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Once those, that part of civilization got behind the aircraft,
- 21:15Speaker 1: there was, I mean, there was nothing. And it looked
- 21:18Speaker 1: like it went on for absolute ever.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I've not spent much time in the Canadian wilderness like that,
- 21:24Speaker 4: but that's what everybody says is just, it feels like you're.
- 21:28Speaker 1: It feels like you are a million miles from home
- 21:31Speaker 1: and really you are.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Like an uninhabited planet.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And you're smelling, you're breathing air. then it's never been,
- 21:42Speaker 1: nobody's breathed it. It ain't got to Arkansas yet, but
- 21:45Speaker 1: by the time it gets to Arkansas, they've been, folks
- 21:47Speaker 1: have been breathing it all over the country.
- 21:48Speaker 3: You're breathing something that's been inside someone.
- 21:50Speaker 1: All over North America. And it's just a, a feeling.
- 21:57Speaker 1: It's just all encompassing really. It's a little, it's, if
- 22:01Speaker 1: you like details and I love the details in, places
- 22:06Speaker 1: that I go and I, the small things and it's over, it's,
- 22:10Speaker 1: it's overwhelming.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It really is.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 3: That's cool. Um, let's, uh, let's hit the next clip.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Normal on a foggy morning.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I just lay up until the fog clears.
- 22:26Speaker 8: Or no, I think it's just, uh, it depends where
- 22:30Speaker 8: you are.
- 22:31Speaker 5: If the bulls have cows with.
- 22:32Speaker 8: Them or not.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:33Speaker 7: It's how moose hunting is. It's just, You could see
- 22:36Speaker 7: nothing for days. And then all of a sudden, there's moose.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Over the place, yeah. Famine to feast.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 7: It's just the way it goes.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Oh, Lord, he's seeing something.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Wait, I think I see a bull.
- 23:03Speaker 8: Look up in the green over there. Is he up
- 23:08Speaker 8: in the green, up high? Definitely a moose, 100%. We're
- 23:13Speaker 8: going in there.
- 23:16Speaker 3: We got time.
- 23:31Speaker 7: Oh, I see him. He's to the left of the
- 23:34Speaker 7: tree down lower. I'd stop in seven minutes. Yeah, they
- 23:47Speaker 7: just disappear.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Now that was that the second day or was that?
- 23:52Speaker 2: That's the first day there.
- 23:54Speaker 3: The very first day.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we were coming back from where we were set
- 23:57Speaker 1: up across the lake and saw that.
- 23:59Speaker 2: He saw that moose. And it's hard to see it, man.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I don't know that if you could even put a
- 24:04Speaker 1: pause on it and zoom in on it on your
- 24:08Speaker 1: phone or your computer, whatever you're watching on and see
- 24:10Speaker 1: that moose. But he was there and you could see
- 24:12Speaker 1: the paddles on him and he had a cow up
- 24:16Speaker 1: in there. And that spot right there where eventually I
- 24:19Speaker 1: shot the moose from probably another 40, 50 yards around
- 24:23Speaker 1: that bend down there is where I found where we
- 24:25Speaker 1: were sitting when I shot that moose. But something that
- 24:29Speaker 1: impressed me about that was there is nobody within any
- 24:36Speaker 1: miles and miles and miles of where we are. And
- 24:39Speaker 1: Craig says, we got seven minutes. And buddy, in seven minutes,
- 24:43Speaker 1: we were packed up and gone.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 1: At five minutes till when we didn't have anything close enough,
- 24:49Speaker 1: we were unloading and just standing there watching just to
- 24:52Speaker 1: see what would happen. And there's nobody that would have known.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Yeah. But me and Craig and Dave.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:58Speaker 2: But it's by the book, man. I love it.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:01Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 25:01Speaker 2: It's there.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Just got to appreciate guys like that. Absolutely.
- 25:03Speaker 3: I mean, the integrity is what, what stands out.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 25:06Speaker 2: A hundred percent.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Um, I can imagine cruising up and down the lake there. You're,
- 25:11Speaker 4: you're probably every Brown spot.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Is a moose. Yeah. I saw this, there's one stump
- 25:17Speaker 1: I tried to kill for six days up there that
- 25:20Speaker 1: I kept seeing through those binos and I, that's gotta
- 25:23Speaker 1: be a moose.
- 25:24Speaker 2: No, it's still a stump.
- 25:25Speaker 3: What's a legal bull. Is there a, is there a
- 25:27Speaker 3: size requirement?
- 25:28Speaker 1: I think it's gotta have like four on the front,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I believe.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Okay.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And then, um, I'm not exactly sure. I mean, we
- 25:35Speaker 1: talked about it, discussed it then. I don't remember now
- 25:37Speaker 1: what it was, but it was just incredible to be
- 25:43Speaker 1: in those places and to be able to see that much.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Right.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And know that, you know, behind that ridge.
- 25:49Speaker 1: How difficult was it to see one? Well, it turns
- 25:52Speaker 1: out it got pretty easy. The longer we stayed there,
- 25:55Speaker 1: the more we saw. But you just didn't see them.
- 26:01Speaker 1: like Craig's described, he said, man, we're allowed to come
- 26:03Speaker 1: around the corner and they'll just be, you know, walking
- 26:06Speaker 1: up and down the bank.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Way down there, uh, you know, across the lake, you'll
- 26:10Speaker 1: see them over there. No, when we started seeing them,
- 26:13Speaker 1: we just rolled up on them and there they were.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Really?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Just as unconcerned with.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Over the course of the hunt. How many moose did
- 26:21Speaker 3: you think, do you think you saw?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Oh, I think we saw five different.
- 26:27Speaker 5: Bulls.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Including the one, no, uh, been four bulls and then
- 26:32Speaker 1: one that had the cow with it. Okay.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Okay. Now that's including one of the bulls that I killed.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Wow.
- 26:38Speaker 4: That I would have thought you would have seen more,
- 26:41Speaker 4: but that's a pretty amazing to see those. Well, you
- 26:44Speaker 4: saw what you see is where they were and fresh
- 26:47Speaker 4: tracks and evidence of them.
- 26:48Speaker 2: And yeah.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And you really got to play the wind up there, man,
- 26:51Speaker 1: because I mean, one of the only creatures on the
- 26:54Speaker 1: planet's got a nose bigger than mine and it's, they
- 26:57Speaker 1: can mine me and you and you got if you
- 27:01Speaker 1: don't play the wind right they're gone that's what.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I was wondering too because was that something you had
- 27:07Speaker 3: to manage 100 i.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Mean you you look the wind direction we walked outside
- 27:11Speaker 1: and we got in the boat determined 100 where we
- 27:15Speaker 1: were going that day and it also the main thing
- 27:18Speaker 1: it determines where we weren't going to go right we're
- 27:21Speaker 1: not going to go in there and just dust this
- 27:23Speaker 1: area was sent when we know that there's moose in
- 27:25Speaker 1: this and we'll, we'll wait until. Was it pretty windy
- 27:28Speaker 1: when you were there? At times it was more than not.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Okay. More than not.
- 27:33Speaker 1: And there was a couple of storms that blew through
- 27:35Speaker 1: and it was raining.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I can remember, I.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Can remember sitting in the, in the cabin and we
- 27:44Speaker 1: had a Starlink system up there. So I, we could,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I called home and I was talking to my wife
- 27:49Speaker 1: on the, And it was just raining, man. It's raining
- 27:53Speaker 1: so hard. Water's coming in on the floor and we're
- 27:55Speaker 1: picking stuff up and setting it on tables. I told her,
- 27:58Speaker 1: I said, it's coming a storm. There's water in here.
- 28:01Speaker 1: My stuff's getting wet and I can't think of any
- 28:03Speaker 1: place I'd rather be right now than right here. It
- 28:06Speaker 1: was just that much fun, you know? So yeah, but
- 28:11Speaker 1: it was windy. It was windy and it displayed a lot,
- 28:14Speaker 1: but you really had to be smart about And just
- 28:17Speaker 1: take your time. You know, it's not a, it's a marathon,
- 28:20Speaker 1: not a sprint.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And every day that, every day that you're there, you're
- 28:25Speaker 1: learning more about the environment, more about what the moose
- 28:28Speaker 1: are doing by the tracks we're seeing and just, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: playing the hands that were dealt.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Um, as you, as Ty went on, you kind of picked, you, you,
- 28:43Speaker 4: there was a scene in there where you talked about
- 28:47Speaker 4: Is that a, you were asking him, is that a moose?
- 28:49Speaker 3: And he's looking, he's like, I don't think so. And
- 28:51Speaker 3: he said, it looks like two eagles. What, what was it?
- 28:53Speaker 2: It was two eagles.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Eagles up there are buzzing around like hummingbirds here. They're
- 28:59Speaker 1: just everywhere. And it was way across the lake and
- 29:03Speaker 1: they were sitting close, far enough apart from each other
- 29:06Speaker 1: or separated enough that you thought it resembled paddles. Right.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Cause that's what you're looking for. And you know, Craig said,
- 29:12Speaker 1: you gotta look for those paddles. You see the paddles
- 29:14Speaker 1: and then you'll see the moose. So that was to
- 29:16Speaker 1: my untrained eye, that's what I was looking for. And
- 29:20Speaker 1: then we looked and saw, oh, that's a, those are
- 29:23Speaker 1: eagles there. Okay. And right after that is when we,
- 29:29Speaker 1: I think first, yeah, we first got in there and
- 29:31Speaker 1: saw where those moose were eventually where I would wind
- 29:34Speaker 1: up killing one. Okay. All right. All right.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Let's, uh, let's move on to the next clip. We've
- 29:42Speaker 3: got a two-minuter here. And I think it's a good one.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Everybody found a comfortable place on the log and sat down.
- 29:51Speaker 2: We were like a bunch of crows sitting on the
- 29:54Speaker 2: light line.
- 29:55Speaker 1: And I had my ballistics calculator out on my phone
- 29:57Speaker 1: and I was range in different places and just really
- 30:01Speaker 1: passing the time because I didn't figure we were going
- 30:04Speaker 1: to see anything until late. And all of a sudden,
- 30:08Speaker 1: Craig said, oh my gosh, there's a bull.
- 30:17Speaker 5: How far?
- 30:19Speaker 8: That's a shooter, Brent.
- 30:20Speaker 5: How far is.
- 30:25Speaker 2: It?
- 30:25Speaker 5: 460.
- 30:26Speaker 8: Wind's right on pretty well.
- 30:27Speaker 5: 2.3 You ready?
- 30:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Hit him.
- 30:54Speaker 7: Shoot him again.
- 30:56Speaker 8: Oh, he's hurt.
- 30:57Speaker 5: Where's he at?
- 30:58Speaker 8: He's butt facing you.
- 31:06Speaker 2: He turns one way or the other. I got him.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I can poke quartering, but he's hard quartering.
- 31:12Speaker 8: Pretty sure you hit him.
- 31:14Speaker 5: There's no doubt.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Hit him again.
- 31:23Speaker 8: He's going down. There you go. He's going down.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Can't see him.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Holy man.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Weapons on safe.
- 31:41Speaker 5: Oh, buddy.
- 31:42Speaker 6: I think you put three in him.
- 31:44Speaker 5: That's a good bull.
- 31:49Speaker 2: I love it, man.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I get the chills every time I watch that. Craig
- 31:56Speaker 1: was so excited and I was so excited. It was,
- 32:01Speaker 1: it was overwhelming. Yeah, 100% overwhelming. And that whole sequence there,
- 32:10Speaker 1: when we got there, it was early. It's like 2.30,
- 32:14Speaker 1: 3 o'clock in the afternoon. And that's the same point
- 32:17Speaker 1: you recognize from where we were the day before. And
- 32:22Speaker 1: when we got there, I said, you know, the wind's
- 32:27Speaker 1: blowing and it was kind of warm. He said, they're
- 32:31Speaker 1: probably not going to start. moving until later unless they're
- 32:34Speaker 1: following a cow he said but it may be warm
- 32:39Speaker 1: enough that they want to come get a drink of
- 32:40Speaker 1: water to cool off so we just set our stuff
- 32:44Speaker 1: up got comfortable dave sat down with his camera craig
- 32:48Speaker 1: sat right beside him and i sat down on the
- 32:50Speaker 1: other end of this log and i've got that ballistics
- 32:52Speaker 1: calculator out and i'm thinking okay if craig calls out
- 32:56Speaker 1: five hundred you know, I'm poking it in there and fine. And,
- 33:00Speaker 1: and cause I, I messed with that scope enough, Matt
- 33:04Speaker 1: and gave me a crash course on it.
- 33:05Speaker 2: And we shot.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Round after round after round, and he's calling out different
- 33:11Speaker 1: distances and I'm doping it in there. So I was
- 33:14Speaker 1: very familiar with, with the process and was very comfortable
- 33:18Speaker 1: with it. And so I'm just sitting there for nothing
- 33:21Speaker 1: better to do than pass the time because Craig says,
- 33:24Speaker 1: you know, You might see one, but it's probably.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Going to be late when it kind of cools off.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Right. And then all of a sudden he jumps up
- 33:32Speaker 1: and runs by me and says, there's a bull right there.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And he's a shooter. He's running back over here to
- 33:40Speaker 1: get his binos and stuff. Dave gets his camera and
- 33:44Speaker 1: stands up. I don't know what to do, so I
- 33:45Speaker 1: just kind of run around in circles there for a
- 33:47Speaker 1: second until Craig got back and we got on the
- 33:51Speaker 1: gun and.
- 33:52Speaker 2: The rest of it was... I mean, you saw it happen.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And when.
- 33:57Speaker 1: There was, he called out the distance to me twice.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 34:02Speaker 1: And because the first time he said, it's 460. Well,
- 34:06Speaker 1: I dialed it in and I said, how far? Because
- 34:08Speaker 1: I get off the scope and I look and I
- 34:10Speaker 1: can see him.
- 34:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 34:12Speaker 2: And I'm like, there's no way that thing's 400.
- 34:14Speaker 1: It's way closer than that. Because it's huge. You know,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I can see him. And he said, 460 twice is
- 34:19Speaker 1: what he said. 460 twice. I'll never forget it. okay
- 34:24Speaker 1: i trust him you know and i got back on
- 34:26Speaker 1: the scope and when i turned it loose it when
- 34:29Speaker 1: i shot i thought i'll be able to hear it
- 34:32Speaker 1: hit him i shouldn't be able to and it seemed
- 34:34Speaker 1: like it took forever but wham you can hear it
- 34:37Speaker 1: hear it you and on the video you.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Could actually i felt like i could hear it on
- 34:41Speaker 3: the video.
- 34:41Speaker 1: You 100 you can and then if you look you
- 34:44Speaker 1: can see it actually go through him oh and hit
- 34:47Speaker 1: those splash the water on the other side okay so
- 34:50Speaker 1: he took the first round right In the ballroom behind
- 34:54Speaker 1: his shoulder on the right side. And the other two,
- 34:57Speaker 1: I wish we would have got a photograph of it.
- 35:00Speaker 1: But the other two, you could have covered up with
- 35:02Speaker 1: your fist.
- 35:02Speaker 5: Really?
- 35:03Speaker 2: I mean, right in the zero. Wow.
- 35:06Speaker 1: That's incredible. It was just like he didn't flinch. I mean,
- 35:09Speaker 1: he just walked right up on the bank and laid
- 35:13Speaker 1: down and died.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Man, it was incredible. It was incredible to see that just...
- 35:21Speaker 4: that huge animal. I was amazed that how little he
- 35:26Speaker 4: moved after that first shot.
- 35:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:28Speaker 4: I mean, just like he didn't know what hit him,
- 35:31Speaker 4: but he wasn't too concerned about it at the moment.
- 35:33Speaker 1: He just soaked it up, man. And he got two
- 35:36Speaker 1: more and he, I mean, he didn't limp. He didn't
- 35:39Speaker 1: do anything. I mean, when it hit him, he moved,
- 35:43Speaker 1: but as far as like shaking or anything like that,
- 35:45Speaker 1: he just, he toted all three of them up.
- 35:47Speaker 2: I just plumb out of sight.
- 35:48Speaker 4: Now you, you spent, many, many years in law enforcement, um,
- 35:54Speaker 4: working with SWAT. What are, what's your background with firearms? Oh, well,
- 35:59Speaker 4: I was also a firearms instructor.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I taught at the state SWAT school down at Camden
- 36:05Speaker 1: when they would have special classes down there for SWAT personnel.
- 36:09Speaker 4: So you're very familiar with long range shooting, how to
- 36:12Speaker 4: handle firearms. I, somebody, uh, we had a guy that commented, Hey,
- 36:17Speaker 4: I appreciate hearing Brent, you know, full of excitement. But
- 36:21Speaker 4: the first thing he says is weapon on safe.
- 36:24Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Just letting everybody know.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:26Speaker 1: That's a weapons instructor right there. Yeah, I think that's
- 36:28Speaker 1: just a force of habit, which is a good habit
- 36:30Speaker 1: to be in.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Absolutely. What were those feelings when Craig said, there's a bull?
- 36:37Speaker 1: Man, it was just, I mean, the whole time, that
- 36:41Speaker 1: whole hunt, I was thinking about how, you know, it's
- 36:44Speaker 1: a grand adventure for sure. But it's also my work.
- 36:47Speaker 1: There's a lot of responsibility, uh, to that encompasses my
- 36:54Speaker 1: portion of it. You know, that that's always why I
- 36:58Speaker 1: talked about being the camera guy, you know, win or lose.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:02Speaker 1: If the camera, if the camera's recording, I've, I've got
- 37:05Speaker 1: all the shots, whether or not the hunter misses or not.
- 37:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Now I'm in front of it. Now it's all on me.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I know Dave's getting his part. Can I hold up
- 37:14Speaker 1: my end of the bargain? And that's where the pressure
- 37:16Speaker 1: comes from. And, I mean, but it is part of
- 37:19Speaker 1: the story. Had I missed him, had I made a
- 37:21Speaker 1: terrible shot, it had just been part of the story. Luckily,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I didn't. I put three good ones in him, and
- 37:27Speaker 1: it was absolute euphoria, really.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Did you see it immediately when you came around the bushes?
- 37:36Speaker 4: Were you like, oh, there it is, when Craig said,
- 37:39Speaker 4: there's a bull over there? And I'm sure you were
- 37:42Speaker 4: full of adrenaline when you walked around those bushes. Did
- 37:45Speaker 4: you immediately connect with him?
- 37:46Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I mean, we, you could see down the river from
- 37:49Speaker 1: where we were sitting. I didn't have to walk out
- 37:51Speaker 1: from where we were sitting when he, when, when Craig
- 37:54Speaker 1: ran past me fast enough to set the grass on fire,
- 37:57Speaker 1: you know, I didn't know if it was something after
- 37:59Speaker 1: him or what should I keep up with him or
- 38:02Speaker 1: outrun Dave or what's going on. And he said, there's
- 38:06Speaker 1: a bull and you know, a good bull right there.
- 38:08Speaker 1: And I looked down there and immediately it was like,
- 38:10Speaker 1: it was like a painting. I mean, he's knee deep
- 38:14Speaker 1: out in this river and just slowly walking out there
- 38:18Speaker 1: and the sun shining on him and the water, the
- 38:22Speaker 1: ripples are lit up from the sun and this thing,
- 38:26Speaker 1: it looks like a movie. I'm getting chills now, Josh,
- 38:29Speaker 1: just thinking about it. It was one of the most
- 38:31Speaker 1: beautiful things I've ever seen. I mean, the sky was blue.
- 38:35Speaker 1: It was absolutely unreal.
- 38:38Speaker 2: It looked like a film.
- 38:39Speaker 9: Wow.
- 38:39Speaker 7: Wow.
- 38:42Speaker 4: And when he said 460, you immediately went into.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I got to trust him. Yeah. My first thing was
- 38:49Speaker 2: there's no way. But he said it's 460.
- 38:51Speaker 1: And I made him or I asked, you know, how
- 38:55Speaker 1: far I'm wanting him to, you know, to make sure
- 39:00Speaker 1: that's what it is. Confirm, you know, and he confirmed
- 39:03Speaker 1: it 460 twice. And I'm like, well, that's how far
- 39:05Speaker 1: he is.
- 39:06Speaker 4: And I love that you kind of had more or
- 39:09Speaker 4: less immediate feedback of whether that animal was down or not.
- 39:12Speaker 4: I mean, it was clear he was going down.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Well, I didn't see it that way.
- 39:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Craig says, you got him. He's going down. And I'm like, bro,
- 39:21Speaker 1: that thing was walking last time I saw it. Of course,
- 39:24Speaker 1: Craig's looking at a lot of, he's looking at, right
- 39:26Speaker 1: he's seen moose move that are shot good he's seen
- 39:31Speaker 1: moose that are walking that are shot not good right
- 39:34Speaker 1: but i mean his confidence was overwhelming but it wasn't
- 39:39Speaker 1: for brent right when he walked out of sight as
- 39:41Speaker 1: far as i was concerned that moose is still walking
- 39:45Speaker 1: Because you shoot a deer and you think, well, he's
- 39:46Speaker 1: in trouble.
- 39:47Speaker 2: You know, you can kind of tell. But I didn't
- 39:49Speaker 2: know what to look for.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And to me, it didn't look like he was moving
- 39:53Speaker 1: any faster or any slower than when he walked out
- 39:55Speaker 1: before I ever shot him the first time. Okay.
- 39:58Speaker 3: So did you wait or did you guys go immediately after?
- 40:03Speaker 1: 14 days we waited right there in that spot is
- 40:07Speaker 1: what it felt like.
- 40:09Speaker 2: I think it was 25 minutes.
- 40:11Speaker 5: Okay.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Because I was checking my watch.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Right.
- 40:13Speaker 1: And. We got in the boat and went down there,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and when he walked out of the river and walked
- 40:19Speaker 1: up on the bank out of the river, he walked
- 40:21Speaker 1: right past a rock that was sticking up.
- 40:23Speaker 2: It was about the size of a.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Basketball, but it was right on the edge of the bank,
- 40:28Speaker 1: a flat bank where, and I think it was maybe
- 40:31Speaker 1: two feet from the edge of the bank down to
- 40:34Speaker 1: the water, just a cut bank straight, and that rock
- 40:37Speaker 1: was right there. So in my mind, when I saw him,
- 40:40Speaker 1: I logged that in there, and I think, That's the
- 40:43Speaker 1: trail I'll look and start looking for blood right there.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And we just started to float down there. Okay.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Well, we've got our next clip coming up. So you
- 40:55Speaker 4: sat there for 25 minutes.
- 40:56Speaker 3: I can't imagine.
- 40:57Speaker 2: It was the longest 25 minutes of my life. I
- 40:59Speaker 2: can't imagine.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:02Speaker 2: It was absolutely brutal.
- 41:03Speaker 3: Well, let's watch this next clip here.
- 41:13Speaker 8: He's laying right there, right through here, Brent. See the horn?
- 41:19Speaker 9: 15 feet.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, he's right there.
- 41:36Speaker 1: What an absolute monster.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I don't know what to say, that is incredible.
- 41:47Speaker 5: Absolutely incredible.
- 41:51Speaker 8: Beautiful fronts on them.
- 41:54Speaker 5: There ain't nothing bad about it. Oh my gosh.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I don't know what to say.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I'm just, thank you for the effort.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Thank you for your friendship, man.
- 42:10Speaker 7: Thank you guys.
- 42:11Speaker 1: This is already a success. Absolutely can't believe it. I
- 42:24Speaker 1: just can't get over how big they are, man. I mean,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I've seen pictures of Steve, one Steve's killed, Clay and all.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I've seen a jillion.
- 42:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Pictures.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I've seen one that y'all have taken, but the body
- 42:37Speaker 1: on these things is just... The day that that I
- 42:44Speaker 1: killed a moose, I was absolutely not prepared for what
- 42:49Speaker 1: that was like. That adrenaline dump was unlike anything I
- 42:56Speaker 1: have ever seen because I glanced down the river before
- 43:00Speaker 1: I went back to get my rifle and I could
- 43:02Speaker 1: see him standing in the river. And it looked like
- 43:06Speaker 1: a dinosaur. It looked like a school bus with antlers.
- 43:09Speaker 2: It was huge. Awesome.
- 43:15Speaker 3: I'm no, I'm no expert on moose, but it looks
- 43:18Speaker 3: like a big one.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Man, I was looking the way he was moving when
- 43:26Speaker 1: he stepped up out of the river onto the bank
- 43:29Speaker 1: and had just seen his hind end going in into
- 43:31Speaker 1: the bushes.
- 43:32Speaker 2: You know, that was the end of it. I'm expecting
- 43:35Speaker 2: this thing not.
- 43:36Speaker 1: To be where he was because he was literally 15
- 43:41Speaker 1: feet from the edge of the water.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Really?
- 43:43Speaker 3: So he literally walked off and just collapsed.
- 43:45Speaker 1: He walked up and just laid down and was dead
- 43:48Speaker 1: as a hammer when we got there. But I was
- 43:51Speaker 1: looking past him. I was looking over him. And Dave
- 43:55Speaker 1: is sitting, if you can obviously see in the boat,
- 43:58Speaker 1: Dave's the cameraman. He's sitting in front of the boat,
- 44:00Speaker 1: and he's facing back and shooting back towards me and Craig.
- 44:05Speaker 2: And I'm looking hard, and Craig says, there he is.
- 44:08Speaker 5: Well, I look.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I look over at Dave's face and he starts smiling.
- 44:12Speaker 1: He looks back at these, he's back on the camera.
- 44:14Speaker 1: So Dave sees him. I know, I can, I know Dave,
- 44:17Speaker 1: I can tell he's like.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Man, we got him. Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And Craig's like, there he is. And I'm like, no,
- 44:22Speaker 1: he ain't. I can't see him. I cannot end this
- 44:26Speaker 1: hunt until I can see this moose.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Right.
- 44:28Speaker 1: And I'm looking further. And when he said 15 feet,
- 44:32Speaker 1: I thought 15 feet. And I looked down and there
- 44:36Speaker 1: he was in the wide open. How I could not
- 44:40Speaker 1: see that moose.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 44:42Speaker 3: Must've felt a tremendous sense of relief.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Oh gosh.
- 44:45Speaker 3: I mean, you can see it on your face. I mean,
- 44:47Speaker 3: you kind of, you kind of gasp a little bit there.
- 44:49Speaker 1: Oh, I did a hundred percent.
- 44:50Speaker 2: I did.
- 44:51Speaker 1: And you know, it's, that's one thing that I love
- 44:54Speaker 1: about how we film these things. It's there's, there's no
- 44:57Speaker 1: way I could have recreated that.
- 44:59Speaker 9: Right.
- 44:59Speaker 2: You know, uh, if, if Dave hadn't got it, it
- 45:02Speaker 2: wouldn't have gotten got. Right. But he did.
- 45:05Speaker 1: And it, it really shows the raw emotion and, just
- 45:10Speaker 1: overwhelming relief that what we came there to do, we did.
- 45:15Speaker 3: So walking up on this animal expectations versus reality.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I was not prepared. I've killed deer before. I've been
- 45:25Speaker 1: after bears. And when you get to them, you're like, ah.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Man, he's good.
- 45:30Speaker 1: He's nice. Thought he was bigger.
- 45:33Speaker 2: I thought he'd be a little bigger, you know?
- 45:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:35Speaker 1: You know, and not no disappointment or anything like that.
- 45:39Speaker 1: That thing got bigger the longer I sat there and
- 45:41Speaker 1: looked at it. It was not, I had no comprehension
- 45:46Speaker 1: of it. I've seen moose one other time, and I
- 45:50Speaker 1: was in Alaska, and I saw him across a bay.
- 45:55Speaker 2: So he might as well have been a horse in
- 45:56Speaker 2: a pasture.
- 45:57Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:58Speaker 2: So I was not prepared for how big they were.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Any idea how much that thing weighed?
- 46:05Speaker 1: Craig estimated him to be, 12 to 1400 pounds.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Holy smokes.
- 46:10Speaker 1: I know that when we, when we skinned him, processed him,
- 46:15Speaker 1: brought all the meat back, we stopped in a Craig's cousin.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I actually got a place in, uh, outside of Winnipeg
- 46:22Speaker 1: and we dropped the meat off there, but I brought
- 46:24Speaker 1: the back straps home. Okay. And the back straps had
- 46:28Speaker 1: two soft coolers. One of them weighed 51 pounds and
- 46:33Speaker 1: the other one weighed 49. So I brought home with
- 46:37Speaker 1: me 100 pounds of backstrap. Holy cow. Yeah, it was
- 46:45Speaker 1: over 600 pounds of processed moose that me and my
- 46:48Speaker 1: neighborhood and family and friends are still eating on.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Not your friend Josh, though.
- 46:54Speaker 2: You will before you leave here.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:57Speaker 4: So what, what, you know, you could tell by the
- 47:01Speaker 4: look on your face when you finally see it, just
- 47:03Speaker 4: this massive sense of relief, excitement, elation, satisfaction, all wrapped
- 47:13Speaker 4: up into one. When you walked up on it, what
- 47:17Speaker 4: were the top three things that you thought when you
- 47:19Speaker 4: walked up?
- 47:20Speaker 2: I was just grateful.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:22Speaker 1: And that is that the top three things that I felt.
- 47:26Speaker 1: was was grateful every all three of them grateful grateful
- 47:30Speaker 1: great i mean it was uh from the opportunity that
- 47:34Speaker 1: i have backed my way into for this career that
- 47:37Speaker 1: i never would have dreamed of having to the people
- 47:41Speaker 1: that made all that happen you know and it has
- 47:43Speaker 1: been i pulled the trigger but i had the easiest
- 47:47Speaker 1: part right you know um from everybody that that saw
- 47:52Speaker 1: that film to the people that work in the retail
- 47:55Speaker 1: stores that under this umbrella that we all work for,
- 47:59Speaker 1: everybody plays a part in that. And I'm grateful for
- 48:02Speaker 1: every one of them. And it truly is a, um,
- 48:08Speaker 1: a blessing to be the tip of the spear to
- 48:10Speaker 1: tell these stories. And, but it all, it's all possible
- 48:14Speaker 1: because of everybody behind the camera that do everything. And
- 48:19Speaker 1: it was an absolute physical and literal thought of, while
- 48:23Speaker 1: I was there.
- 48:24Speaker 4: You, you kind of immediately express your gratitude to Craig and, and, uh,
- 48:31Speaker 4: the other guys.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Why is that.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Important to you? Oh, it's just important to, uh, this
- 48:37Speaker 1: is never, I love being the center of attention and
- 48:41Speaker 1: talking to a room and entertaining a room full of people.
- 48:45Speaker 2: But my least favorite subject is me.
- 48:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 48:49Speaker 1: I'm just, uh, I'm blessed to be where I am
- 48:51Speaker 1: and have this platform But I think it's not to
- 48:55Speaker 1: tell Brent's story. It's to tell everybody's story. And everybody
- 48:59Speaker 1: has a part. Everybody's got a story, and everybody's story
- 49:02Speaker 1: needs to be heard. And I enjoy telling my part
- 49:05Speaker 1: of it, but my part of this story is just
- 49:09Speaker 1: a part of it. There's a lot of parts, and
- 49:12Speaker 1: everybody plays a part in it.
- 49:14Speaker 4: That's one of the things I really I really appreciate
- 49:17Speaker 4: about you Brent is just your your sense of gratitude
- 49:21Speaker 4: appreciation you're a humble guy and based on all the
- 49:27Speaker 4: the comments that I've read on social media and YouTube
- 49:32Speaker 4: it's pretty obvious to everybody else so I appreciate you
- 49:34Speaker 4: being a being a model of that so yeah what's
- 49:38Speaker 4: it like processing an animal.
- 49:41Speaker 1: That pig took us two and a half hours to
- 49:44Speaker 1: get him skint and quartered up uh which is you
- 49:47Speaker 1: know fairly quick for something that yeah big and the
- 49:50Speaker 1: pack out like i said man was it was pick
- 49:55Speaker 1: up a load of meat take four steps and load
- 49:58Speaker 1: it in the boat right i mean it was just
- 50:00Speaker 1: so easy uh it was skinning a bear skinning a
- 50:07Speaker 1: deer you know times 10 And, uh, easy as far
- 50:14Speaker 1: as how we handled the meat, how it is to,
- 50:17Speaker 1: to skin one, you know, laying down is a lot
- 50:20Speaker 1: easier skin of moose.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Laying on the ground. It is a deer to me.
- 50:23Speaker 5: Oh, really? Yeah.
- 50:24Speaker 1: I think so. Just because it's, it's so much bigger.
- 50:27Speaker 1: You got a bigger handhold. And between, you know, Dave
- 50:30Speaker 1: did some film and then he set the camera up
- 50:31Speaker 1: and he jumped in there with us. So it took
- 50:33Speaker 1: three of us two and a half hours of solid
- 50:35Speaker 1: skinning and cutting to get it out and get it
- 50:39Speaker 1: in the boat.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Wow.
- 50:40Speaker 1: And I'm not sure, I don't know what the next
- 50:44Speaker 1: clip is, but the highlight of that whole thing, or
- 50:51Speaker 1: I wouldn't say the whole thing, but one of the
- 50:54Speaker 1: top highlights of it was when we got that moose
- 50:58Speaker 1: back in the boat and we were headed back towards
- 51:00Speaker 1: the cabin as probably a mile and a half, I think.
- 51:05Speaker 3: What time of day did you shoot it?
- 51:07Speaker 2: Oh, it was.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Probably three o'clock in the afternoon. Okay, so you guys
- 51:11Speaker 1: are going late into the evening. Yeah, it's late into
- 51:14Speaker 1: the evening time we get there. So by the time
- 51:16Speaker 1: we get loaded and everything, done skint, all the rib meat,
- 51:21Speaker 1: neck meat, everything cut off and loaded into the boat
- 51:24Speaker 1: and left there. we had our headlights on in the
- 51:28Speaker 1: boat and we start heading, we've got 20 minutes, you know,
- 51:33Speaker 1: of motoring to get back to the cabin. I turned my, Dave,
- 51:38Speaker 1: of course he didn't, he's filming.
- 51:39Speaker 2: I turned my light out.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Craig turns his light out and then it's too dark
- 51:43Speaker 1: to film, but the, our way is lit up by the,
- 51:47Speaker 1: the Northern lights. And I was sitting in the back
- 51:50Speaker 1: and Dave was sitting behind, was sitting right there beside
- 51:53Speaker 1: me in the Northern. You can see that, moose the
- 51:56Speaker 1: moose antlers and on the bow of that boat up
- 51:59Speaker 1: there and then the northern lights up above it and
- 52:01Speaker 1: that's how we what led our way back from where
- 52:04Speaker 1: we skint that moose to our cabin and it was
- 52:08Speaker 1: unreal it was so the emotion was i mean it
- 52:14Speaker 1: yeah it brought tears to my eyes how beautiful it
- 52:17Speaker 1: was to be in that place in a place like
- 52:20Speaker 1: that with two of my good friends and do something
- 52:23Speaker 1: like that.
- 52:24Speaker 2: And share that with them.
- 52:25Speaker 1: It was, man, overwhelming is a theme from the time
- 52:29Speaker 1: I got there to the time we left. And anytime
- 52:32Speaker 1: I think about it, and I'm not sure there has
- 52:34Speaker 1: been a day go by that I hadn't thought about
- 52:37Speaker 1: one portion of that trip or the other.
- 52:39Speaker 3: I mean, not, not to put it cheaply, but that
- 52:43Speaker 3: sounds epic.
- 52:44Speaker 5: It is.
- 52:45Speaker 1: It was, it was, you know, outside of something with
- 52:48Speaker 1: my children or grandchildren, it was the event of a
- 52:51Speaker 1: lifetime for me. That's incredible.
- 52:54Speaker 3: Um, is that the longest shot on game that you've
- 52:59Speaker 3: ever taken?
- 53:00Speaker 1: A hundred percent. You know, growing up down here in
- 53:04Speaker 1: South Arkansas, um, you have a scope on a rifle,
- 53:08Speaker 1: but any place I, we were hunting, I hunt in
- 53:10Speaker 1: the woods, you know, and I don't, um, I never
- 53:14Speaker 1: had a shot more than 150 yards, you know, and
- 53:18Speaker 1: And I like to bow hunt, so I hardly ever
- 53:21Speaker 1: hunt with a rifle anyway. And so that was by far,
- 53:25Speaker 1: and that's what was so important to me to be
- 53:27Speaker 1: prepared when I got there is shooting with Matt and
- 53:32Speaker 1: getting comfortable and dialed in with that scope and changing
- 53:37Speaker 1: distances with a quick shot. call out and swap into
- 53:42Speaker 1: different targets and putting the dope in the scope.
- 53:46Speaker 4: You mentioned dope a couple of times. Tell our listeners
- 53:49Speaker 4: and viewers what that means.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Well, it's just those scopes, they've got dials on them
- 53:56Speaker 1: and turrets on them, and they're numbered. And for wind
- 54:01Speaker 1: and then elevation, left and right and up and down,
- 54:04Speaker 1: Depending on what those factors are, you can put that
- 54:07Speaker 1: into what's called a DOPE calculator on your phone, an
- 54:10Speaker 1: app you just put on your phone. And then if
- 54:12Speaker 1: it coincides with the turrets on the scope and it
- 54:15Speaker 1: tells you where to dial them in so that you're
- 54:18Speaker 1: shooting for distance and wind correction.
- 54:21Speaker 4: DOPE is an acronym for data on previous engagement. So
- 54:25Speaker 4: you're using ballistics from a known target and based on
- 54:32Speaker 4: your round and your rifle, the the velocity of that bullet,
- 54:36Speaker 4: you can calculate if it's zeroed at a hundred, you
- 54:39Speaker 4: can calculate how far you need to click for elevation.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yes. Way smarter than me. And it works really well.
- 54:47Speaker 1: And though, like I said, you know, I made three
- 54:50Speaker 1: good shots on that, but I had real good equipment
- 54:53Speaker 1: and real good information working in there. Really all I
- 54:57Speaker 1: did was control my, try to control my breathing. As
- 55:00Speaker 1: you can hear in that clip, I tried.
- 55:03Speaker 2: To settle down.
- 55:04Speaker 3: You did a good job because I was like, well,
- 55:06Speaker 3: Brent's huffing, coming around that corner. And then I heard
- 55:09Speaker 3: you just kind of calm down.
- 55:11Speaker 1: I just had to because he was dancing around in
- 55:13Speaker 1: there like he was at a disco until I got it.
- 55:16Speaker 3: What power scope is on there?
- 55:17Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that is a 3x18x50, I believe. Okay, okay.
- 55:24Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's pretty stout.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Okay, we got another clip here.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Here it is.
- 55:33Speaker 5: Oh, sweet.
- 55:36Speaker 2: This is yours Tim. I wish you'd been here with me.
- 55:39Speaker 1: My older brother Tim took me hunting when he didn't
- 55:42Speaker 1: have to. When I was more in the way than
- 55:45Speaker 1: anything else. The only thing that would have made that
- 55:48Speaker 1: moment better was to have watched him do what I
- 55:52Speaker 1: just done. It's a long way from the hay field
- 55:56Speaker 1: in Bradley County where I grew up to right here.
- 56:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:01Speaker 2: It's a good place to be man.
- 56:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Anytime. I put that in there just so you could
- 56:10Speaker 3: get choked up.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Trying to get me.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Oh.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Man.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Your brother Tim's been a real fixture in your life.
- 56:20Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 56:21Speaker 3: As long as you can remember from the stories you told.
- 56:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:25Speaker 3: And that really.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Comes through in the film and the time he invested
- 56:32Speaker 4: in you, mentoring you and hunting and as a brother
- 56:35Speaker 4: and a friend and a, and a hunting companion. And, and, uh, that,
- 56:39Speaker 4: that was pretty meaningful to you. What, what, uh, what
- 56:43Speaker 4: did Tim teach you that kind of came through in
- 56:46Speaker 4: this hunt?
- 56:48Speaker 1: Man, he has taught me so much stuff that comes
- 56:51Speaker 1: in my everyday life. He's probably the most forgiving person
- 56:55Speaker 1: I know. And he is, um, he can look at
- 57:00Speaker 1: a situation where I'm ready to grab a hammer and
- 57:03Speaker 1: and start tearing stuff up. And he's like, just sit
- 57:06Speaker 1: back a minute and let's, let's reevaluate what, what we
- 57:09Speaker 1: really need to do. There is no one on that.
- 57:14Speaker 1: I know, or have ever heard of that has more
- 57:17Speaker 1: integrity than, than my brother. He's always doing the right thing,
- 57:21Speaker 1: whether it's the easy, easiest thing to win it when
- 57:24Speaker 1: it's not the easiest thing. And he is, um, he
- 57:29Speaker 1: is an example of what, A brother and a friend
- 57:35Speaker 1: and a father he is. And he is a good man.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And I talk to him every day. And I haven't
- 57:41Speaker 1: talked to him today, and it's absolutely driving me nuts.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Because since you got here, it's a normal time that
- 57:47Speaker 1: we call back and forth and talk. So I'm ready
- 57:50Speaker 1: for you to get out of here, Josh.
- 57:52Speaker 2: We can see if we.
- 57:53Speaker 3: Can pipe him in.
- 57:55Speaker 2: But he is my buddy, you know, and we're tight.
- 58:00Speaker 2: What would.
- 58:02Speaker 3: How would that moment have been different if Tim had
- 58:05Speaker 3: been there?
- 58:07Speaker 1: That's the only thing that would have made it better.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I mean, I was literally, I would have loved to
- 58:12Speaker 1: have seen him do that. He's the guy, he's eight
- 58:15Speaker 1: years older than me. And when I was just little,
- 58:19Speaker 1: he was taking me everywhere. And he decided when he
- 58:24Speaker 1: was 16 and I was eight or 14 and I
- 58:26Speaker 1: was four or six, he.
- 58:32Speaker 2: He's like, I want to grow up and be a
- 58:34Speaker 2: trapper in Alaska. Me too.
- 58:36Speaker 1: I wanted to do whatever he did. And I wanted
- 58:38Speaker 1: to put a track. If I wasn't putting a track
- 58:40Speaker 1: in my dad's tracks, I was putting one in Tim's.
- 58:44Speaker 1: And everything that we just seemed to be so close.
- 58:49Speaker 1: And it would have been the culmination of all the
- 58:53Speaker 1: things that I have been so blessed to do to
- 58:55Speaker 1: be able to share that with him and watch him
- 58:57Speaker 1: do that.
- 58:58Speaker 2: That's the only thing that would have made it better.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:01Speaker 3: You know, I think.
- 59:03Speaker 4: There's been opportunities, you know, I've I've talked about, uh,
- 59:09Speaker 4: on bear grease, just about, I didn't grow up hunting
- 59:13Speaker 4: and Clay and Newcomb is the one who kind of
- 59:17Speaker 4: taught me how to hunt and became a friend and
- 59:19Speaker 4: a hunting mentor. How valuable is that to, to take
- 59:23Speaker 4: younger people or people who haven't had that experience?
- 59:26Speaker 5: It is.
- 59:28Speaker 1: It's the only way we keep this going. That's how
- 59:31Speaker 1: valuable it is. You know, if it stops with one generation,
- 59:34Speaker 1: it's done forever. You can go, it's easy to go
- 59:38Speaker 1: back and count the generations that got us to this point,
- 59:41Speaker 1: but the responsibility is on us now to keep it
- 59:45Speaker 1: going and to show it to the next folks. And there's,
- 59:49Speaker 1: I have always said, you share a tragedy with someone,
- 59:57Speaker 1: you can cut that sadness by 50%. You share a
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: joy with someone and it multiplies it. There's no end
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: to the number that you can, that'll multiply. And that's,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: that's what we got to do. Yeah.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And that, that's how valuable it is and how important
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: it is.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: And we want to keep doing these kinds of things
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: and having these moments and sharing them.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: We, we got to share them.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And, and share, sharing them with the folks that
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: are not already exposed to it, get somebody else in
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: a position to do the same thing.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: And it's, It's vital.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: And as a kid, I probably never thought about that. Sure.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: As a young man, I didn't think about it as much.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: But now it's at the forefront of a lot of
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: the things that I do.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: I think it has so many benefits, you know, relationally and,
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: you know, just learning the sport and the ethics behind it.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: But even just basic health, being outside, being in nature,
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: being in the sun.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: There's so many benefits all the way around, and if
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: you can take someone and teach them that and teach
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: them the value of hunting ethically and harvesting organic meat,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I mean, it pays dividends.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: No, we were watching. We had a premiere party.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I actually saw the two rough drafts before the final
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: version came out, and the final version, we waited until
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: that night to watch, and I watched it over friends
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: of ours, friends and family. We all gathered up there.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: huge television, you know, like a movie screen and, and
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: we watched it. And, but before we watched it, we,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: we had moose chili from that moose, you know?
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: And so it was that moose responsible.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Not only for the entertainment of the evening, but for
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: feeding everybody.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: At the table, you know?
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: So it was, it was, it's a, it was a
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: very special day, a very special thing to see that
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: come out and, uh, to have the, the story in there,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: showing my dad and my brother, it was a special,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: special moment. That's awesome.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: Let's move on to the next clip here.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Night strap and moose heart.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: That is the first combination of that I've ever had.
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: Ready?
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Man, it was so tender.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: We got some back straps too.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they're... I'll cook all the heart and then we'll
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: tie into them. We got a picnic tomorrow with all
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: this meat we got. That gum is good.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Well, let's go catch a fish.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: Heck yeah, maybe some walleye for supper.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Oh, there he is.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho.
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: We found one.
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: Come here, little fella.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Get back out there. To your grandpa.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: There we go.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: That's a good one.
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: There he is.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: It'll be a little treat for supper tonight.
- 1:03:36Speaker 9: Is he good?
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I'm guessing him 15 pounds.
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: Yeah, right on.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Don't you think? Yeah, for sure.
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: 14 at least.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: My fish, I say how big he was.
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: So I'm a little jealous of that moose meat.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: It looked pretty tasty.
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Was the heart good?
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Oh, fantastic. And I've eaten deer heart before. I had
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: never eaten a bear heart, believe it or not. And
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I may, if I'm fortunate enough to get one this year,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I'll try it. But that moose heart, there's some.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: How big was that moose heart?
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: As big as about like a volleyball. Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Close to a volleyball. It was humongous. And I've got
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: some photos of it, you know, of me holding it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: And it's just unreal how big that thing is.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: But we.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I mean, I had to bring some of it home.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: We were there for, I think, four more days, three
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: or four more days. And we ate, from the time
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I killed that moose, that's what we ate, moose and
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: something every night from then on. And we still didn't
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: eat all that heart. Really?
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Oh, gosh, yeah.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: It's huge.
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Absolutely huge.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: What did it taste like?
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I was expecting, and I like liver. I was expecting
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: the texture of an organ, like a, like a gizzard
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: or a liver, but it was just tender.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: It was absolutely tender.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: And it was, there was no, people say, and I'm
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: not a fan of the phrase game, something tasting gamey.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I mean, coon tastes like coon, fish tastes like fish,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: deer tastes like deer meat, you know, beef tastes like beef.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: They compare everything to beef, but it's, I mean, it
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: is what it is. Um, There was no strong taste
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: to it. Right. No iron taste like you would kind
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: of get like you eat with liver sometimes. You get
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: kind of an iron taste to it. It was just
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: really good, man.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: Did it compare to any other game that you've had?
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I don't know that I would be able to say, oh,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: that's Mooseheart.
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: I took a bite and a blind taste test.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: It just tasted like good.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Seasoned fried meat.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: For those who have never experienced it. What's the feeling
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: of eating meat that you harvested that day?
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: It's hard from that day. It just, it never gets
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: better than that day. It's like fish. You know, I'm
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: not a, I love fish. I'm not a big fan
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: of eating trout. They don't just don't, I'm with you.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: They don't taste that good to me, but you catch
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: a trout and you cook it on the bank of
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: the river.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: It's the best thing you've ever eaten.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: And it's all got to do with environment and where
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: you are, you know, and who you're with.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: The experience.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Yeah, the experience.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Here's the big question. Fried fish or moose? Man, I
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: asked Craig that. He said moose. And I probably have
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: to tend to agree if it's fresh moose because of
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: the environment. But you bait a trap with a fried
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: fish and you will catch me every time.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Did y'all catch walleye?
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: We did.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: And that was one thing we didn't. Dave was changing
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: out a battery or something and we just kept fishing.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: We're like, Dave, you're on your own. We're fishing. We're
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: fishing for supper, buddy. And, uh, we didn't get that
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: or it didn't make it into the film, but we
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: did catch some walleye. Walleye is great eating.
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: Oh gosh. Yeah.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: But the pike up there, I mean, that's the, we
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: call that a jackfish down here, but the jackfish we
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: eat down here. Ain't like those up there. That cold water, man.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Good clean tasting.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: It is so good.
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: It's great.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: So we've, uh, We've got a couple comments and questions
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: that I just want to kind of run by you here.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: I'm not going to try to say all of these
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: names from people who made comments, but Aaron Song3913 said,
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: I heard that moose is the most tender meat. It
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: doesn't matter how old they are or young. They taste
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: very tender. I don't know how things taste tender, but
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: was the backstrap tender?
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: Yes, it was.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: And the longer it, the longer we had it hanging
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: in camp, the more tender it got.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: Did you leave it up the whole week?
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: We did.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: We left it up for, I think we were there
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: three more days after I killed that. Okay.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: After I killed that moose and it got.
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: What day did you kill it on? I forgot to
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: ask that.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: It was like the second full day of hunting, but
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: like the third day that we were there.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: And, uh, it was nice and cool there.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Oh gosh.
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: Um, Jordan Pollock.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: 9,004 said only one question I got. Why are they
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: putting quartered meat into plastic bags?
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: That was get it out of the boat, cross the
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Sandy beach up to the place where we had it
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: laid out to cool.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: It didn't stay in plastic bags. All right.
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: Um, few more questions. Did you like that style of
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: hunt or.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Would you prefer a spot and stalk? I, you know,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I would like to do the spot and stalk. It
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: would be hard to do that in that country there
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: because of the, limited visibility. But that's, I mean, that's
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: going to be my favorite because it's the only way
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I've done it so far. I've been on one moose
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: hunting trip and killed a moose. So that was, that
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: would be my preferred. Would I like to try it?
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Absolutely. And I'd like to try it. My next one
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: was archery.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: Um, Quinn Scott said, What's a big thing that you
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: took from behind the camera to being on camera?
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: That's a great question.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I think one of the things that I learned the
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: most was patience. Being a cameraman, you're always wanting to
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: stretch that shot out as long as you can. You
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: think about like a whitetail hunt. If you just showed
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: the kill shot on a whitetail hunt like an archery hunt,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that video would probably be, it'd be stretching to do
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: 30 seconds. Right. You know, from start to finish, from
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: the time you see him. And as a cameraman, you're
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: wanting to milk that time out to be able to
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: tell that story. So I think patience is, is an
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: extra sense of, of patience would be what I took
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: from behind the camera to in front, because I'm, I'm
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: thinking about it, but I'm also thinking about what Dave's looking,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: looking at, you know, am I giving him time to get,
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: set and everything. Cause he's, I mean, he's a professional. He's,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: he's two steps ahead of me where I'm at on,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: on that part. But it is conscious in my mind,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: especially if you're filming a hunt, the, the time that
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: it takes to get it right.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: Great answer.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: Um, you know, you've, you've had that moose meat of
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: quite a while now. Um, Ethan Kenley said, what's your
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: favorite recipe you've made with your moose meat? Man, we, we,
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: We have a bunch of it in burger.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: We have made meatloaf and tacos and burgers and everything
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: you can imagine. But probably my favorite is probably chili. Okay.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: The chili is good. The steaks are great. I'm not
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: saying the steaks aren't good. They are absolutely fantastic.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: You chunk it up like into stew meat?
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: No.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Or you grind it? Grind it on the ground like burger.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: Okay. But we did have some stew meat done, and
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: I've done recipes with that. And I gave a buddy
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: of mine a tri-tip and he fixed it off of
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: that moose. And he said it was unbelievably good. And
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: after he told me that, I thought, dang, I shouldn't have.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Gave it to.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Him. But it's been really good. There's been no way
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: that we have fixed it that it hadn't been good.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: And literally anything that you would do with beef or
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: deer meat, you can do with this.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Okay. It's really good.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Broad question here.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: But we've got a comment that says, what's the best
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: part about moose hunting?
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I can only attest to this trip because I've only
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: been once. I was never a cameraman on another moose hunt.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: I mean, this is my experience. And the best part
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: about it was being there, sharing it with my friends.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: It was great.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: You know, when I go bow hunting, I'm usually by
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: myself unless it's a filmed event. And I come back
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, Josh, I wish you'd have been there.
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: And saw this. You know, it may have something, not
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: even anything to do with the moose. It may have
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: been two squirrels fighting that fell out of a tree.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: But on that hunt and to this very moment right now,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I can pick up my phone and text Dave or
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Craig and say, hey, remember when this happened.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: You know, how cool is that? So I think that's
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: probably my best part.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: Well, we've got one more. We've got one more clip
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: here we want to show.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I hope no one asked which had a bigger effect
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: on me, the moose or the lights. The answer might
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: surprise them.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: Quick clip.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: But the Northern Lights, you talked about there in that clip.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Don't if someone were to ask.
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: Tell us what that meant to you. Like what, what
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: did it do? You, you talked about the being on
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: the boat and seeing that and that being your, your,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: your light that you follow home back to camp, but, um,
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: it clearly did something to you.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: You know, from a little, when I was a little boy,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: I was reading, uh, adventure stories from in seventh grade.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I was reading Peter Hathaway, cap stick, you know, death
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: in the long grass about big game hunting in Africa.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: And before that, I was reading Jack London and adventure
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: stories in Alaska. And they talk about the Northern Lights.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: And to me, that would have been as foreign as
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: listening to Neil Armstrong talk about walking on the moon.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Something that I would never have dreamt I would have
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: got to see. And that has been over a lifetime.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: You know, I'm 60 years old. And I've been thinking
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: about that since I was 10. And then to be
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: there and to look at it with my eyes, there
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: is no way Dave's camera could capture all the things
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that went into that. And it was an easy answer
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: for me. The northern lights had a bigger impact on
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: me than that moose did. Because I will eat that
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: moose and it'll be gone. And then there will be
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: no more moose. But those lights will be in me forever.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: And it was amazing to sit there and think that
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: the same creator that made those lights made me. So it, it,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: it made a very significant, it was a very significant
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: moment for me to sit there and see that. And
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: it was, it has been so good. Every, every bit
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: of it. I think about them now and I can't
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: quit smiling about it. You know, it was, they were,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: You ask a question, we talked when you first got
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: here about a lot of the clips that you see
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: of the Northern Lights are sped up so you can
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: see the movement. You can see the movement in them
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: if you're just sitting there staring at them. But it's
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: almost like you could hear them. It is an overwhelming
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: experience to sit there and see that.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: It was for me.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: And I'm a detail-oriented person where I try to pay
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: attention to everything except when alexis tells me to do
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: something apparently i'm not very.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: Good at that but it was.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Very easy answer that that had the biggest impact on
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: me and it was all good man.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: That's great any final reflect reflections on the on the trip.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: There was nothing bad about it you know it's hard
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: going from getting all that stuff up there and all
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: the logistics that went into it. I can't tell you
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: how many meetings we had meetings after meetings, after.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Meetings on prepping and planning.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: And I knew once I got there and we got
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: feet on the ground, why we had so many of them,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: because it is such a big undertaking, but just the
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: whole experience as a whole, uh, I would, there was,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: I had, there was no detractors, even the long drive.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: You know, we, Dave and I flew into Winnipeg and
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: then drove like 10 or 11 hours to the northern
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: part of Manitoba to catch a float plane to go
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: in there to where Craig was. So, I mean, it was,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: once we got there, I mean, it was, Katie, borrow
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: the door. You got to go. You know, you got
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: to load up and drive. And then, I mean, it
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: was effort. It took effort to get there. But every
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: bit of it was fun. Every bit of it was fun.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: you know, new and refreshing. And I got to share
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: it with my friends and it just made it so good.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: It was, uh, it will be with me forever. And
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I hope to get to go back and do it
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: again soon, you know, with, uh, in a different place
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: or with Craig or whatever, but I won't go with
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: a bow and just get that much closer. Yeah.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: Well, thanks for sharing the film with us and, and, uh,
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: and talking, talking with me today.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thank you for being here, Josh. I
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: appreciate it. Thank y'all for being here. If you haven't
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: seen it yet, check out the 12 and 26 Manitoba
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: moose hunting episode that I did there on the meat
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: eater YouTube channel. Uh, it's been a, it was an
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: absolute pleasure to do and I appreciate it. And send
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: your comments in anytime you see one of these, when
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: we do one of these companion podcasts, your questions can
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: get answered right here on the air. Thank y'all for
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: watching and y'all be careful.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: Thanks, everybody.
