- 0:00John chapter 19 Let us pray. Oh Heavenly Father, here we are
- 0:07again. Lord, we come to sit at your
- 0:09feet and to learn and to dine and to Sup.
- 0:12God, I thank you for the work of the cross.
- 0:14God, I thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, Lord,
- 0:18and we want to know him in his sufferings.
- 0:21Lord, we ask for the resurrection power God to dwell
- 0:25within us. Lord, I pray, Holy Spirit, you
- 0:28will increase in our lives, give us direction and discernment,
- 0:32convict us when we are searing our conscience.
- 0:36God, I pray against the schemes of the enemy.
- 0:39Father, I pray in the name of Jesus that you'll give a zeal
- 0:42that will eat up US, Lord, that we will be consumed.
- 0:46Lord, with the zeal of your house, Father, I pray that you
- 0:50will get all the glory from our lives.
- 0:53Lord, I pray that the reading of the text today, Lord, moves us
- 0:58into obedience out of the love that we have for Jesus Christ,
- 1:02because what He did unto death, the obedience unto death of the
- 1:07Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, we remember him in all of
- 1:11His sufferings, Lord, we remember the sacrifice that He
- 1:15made for us, Lord, so that we can be there with you.
- 1:19He was perfect and sinless, Lord, and we are washed in the
- 1:23blood of Jesus Christ, Lord. And it is the holiness of Jesus
- 1:28that makes us holy. It is His righteousness that is
- 1:31imputed unto us, Lord. And it was an all sufficient
- 1:35sacrifice. And it was the atonement, Lord,
- 1:39so that we can be at one with you, Father, and His
- 1:43righteousness, Lord, can be ours.
- 1:45So, Lord, we take a hold of the hem of His garment, Lord, and we
- 1:49receive our justification, Lord, and we stand in your presence.
- 1:54We come boldly into the throne room of grace.
- 1:58God and Lord, we thank you for all the truths that are
- 2:02contained in this chapter. And Lord, I pray the Holy Spirit
- 2:05will guide us through this. Let us have a reverence, Lord,
- 2:12as we move through this chapter. I pray that we feel the weight
- 2:16of this chapter upon our lives, Lord, and I pray that we can
- 2:21make a decision to follow Christ in all seasons, in all areas
- 2:28God, in all circumstances. God, I pray that this chapter
- 2:33changes us from the inside out. I pray that this chapter becomes
- 2:37part of our DNA, comes part of our mindset, becomes part of our
- 2:43very being. God, I pray that it gets into
- 2:46us, Lord, and we will never forget what Christ did on the
- 2:49cross. We thank you, Lord Jesus for
- 2:52everything that you did. Holy Spirit, teach us in God, I
- 2:56pray that you are honored and glorified in the highest.
- 3:00We love you and it's in Jesus Christ, holy and precious name
- 3:06that I pray. Amen.
- 3:11Let's start in verse one then. Pilate therefore took Jesus and
- 3:20scourged him. This is a loaded verse here.
- 3:25The gospel writers are very careful not to try and pull on
- 3:33our emotions. But this scourging would have
- 3:38been the most terrible act of torture.
- 3:43With the cat of nine tails and a whip that ripped open Christ
- 3:48back, leading most of its victims in a state of shock.
- 3:57This would have been torture at the highest degree.
- 4:02And there were many criminals that died from this scourging.
- 4:06They could not take it. But we know that our Lord Jesus
- 4:10Christ was a man of men, and we know that he was able to take
- 4:18this brutal beating and he was still alive and had his senses
- 4:27about him after they got done making him a public spectacle.
- 4:33And it was meant here, Pilate, meant for it to satisfy the Jews
- 4:41so that they would release him. Let's see how the story
- 4:44continues on in verse 2. And the soldiers platted a crown
- 4:50of thorns and put it on his head, and they put him in a
- 4:54purple robe. So here this crown of thorns
- 4:59would have been pushed into his forehead and into his temples
- 5:05and into the back of his head, and would have caused him to
- 5:10bleed from the top of his head down.
- 5:14And we know that Jesus went to the cross with this crown on his
- 5:19head. None of the Gospel writers tell
- 5:21us that it was taken off of his head.
- 5:24So we can surmise that He went to the cross.
- 5:27What a beautiful sight. We can see Him hanging there
- 5:31with this crown of thorns upon his head, friends.
- 5:34And it was the reality that he was King of the universe and he
- 5:39is king of our heart. And I pray that he has become
- 5:44the king on the throne of your life and that you have committed
- 5:49everything to him. I pray because he is worthy.
- 5:55Give him his due honor and praise.
- 5:57This mockery, friends, is despicable when we come to the
- 6:03reality that He deserves all praise, but He did it for you
- 6:08and he did it for me, and praise God Hallelujah in the highest
- 6:12that He was obedient unto death. Verse 3 and said, Hail king of
- 6:18the Jews, and they struck him with their hands.
- 6:22This hostility towards God is still going on today.
- 6:26People do not want to believe in God.
- 6:29They do not want the conviction that comes from believing in
- 6:32God. They want to do life the way
- 6:35that they want to do life. They want the autonomy and they
- 6:38want to be God themselves. And they are hostile and wicked
- 6:42towards a good and loving and graceful and peaceful God.
- 6:47And they see this Bible as a list of rules, and they rebel
- 6:52against this list of rules. But it is not until we can see.
- 6:56The Bible is a book of promises that God promises us life
- 7:00eternal if we will put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:06What a beautiful, harmonious, congruent tapestry that the Word
- 7:12of God is. It is a masterpiece and it is
- 7:15not until we can see God in His grace and see God in His love
- 7:22and see God in all the ways that He protects us by letting us
- 7:27know what to do and what not to do to make it safely through
- 7:31this life into His loving arms. And a lot of times it is by
- 7:36putting yourself in dangerous situations that God gets the
- 7:40most glory, Friends. And that is what we need to
- 7:44understand is that His ways are not our ways.
- 7:48And here you can see this mockery, You can see this
- 7:51degradation, You can see this shame that brought about our
- 7:56salvation. It brought about the victory,
- 8:00friends. And you need to know that God
- 8:04was well pleased to crush His servant, but it did not excuse
- 8:08anyone who was doing it. 4 Pilate therefore went forth
- 8:16again, and said unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to
- 8:20you, that you may know that I find no fault in him.
- 8:24So Pilate here time and time and time again, Pilate here said, I
- 8:29find no fault in him, but he was too weak to stand up to them.
- 8:36He was too weak to let this innocent man go.
- 8:39And all the scriptures must be fulfilled.
- 8:42But Pilate still has to answer for his refusal to acknowledge
- 8:48that Jesus Christ did not deserve a criminal's death.
- 8:54Five. Then came Jesus forth, wearing
- 8:58the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
- 9:01And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man.
- 9:08Pilate here acted as an agent of God, and he brings forth Jesus
- 9:13and all of his sufferings, and we must look upon him and make a
- 9:16decision. Behold the man.
- 9:20Behold him as the snake was lifted up in the wilderness on
- 9:25the pole. We must look upon him to be
- 9:28saved. Behold Him in all of His
- 9:32sufferings. Behold Him in all of His glory.
- 9:37And so many times you see throughout Scripture the way
- 9:40that the Lord works. It is in the sufferings that God
- 9:46is most glorified. He told Paul.
- 9:48He said when he begged that God would take away this thorn in
- 9:57his side. He said three times he begged
- 9:59God to take it away. And what did God say?
- 10:03He said that it is in your weakness that He is made strong.
- 10:10So we need to know that the way of God is not our way.
- 10:16And we need to know that there's so many times that we shrink
- 10:20away from being humiliated, we shrink away from being shamed,
- 10:26we shrink away from being made fun of and goaded and poked at.
- 10:32But just know that God is desirous to turn that around for
- 10:38your good. God is desirous in your weakness
- 10:44that he will be made strong and that the witness that you have
- 10:48coming out of those seasons will be for the edification of
- 10:52others, for building others up. And we need not to shrink away
- 10:57from the times that God is desirous to grow us up in the
- 11:01faith. You could see it here as Jesus
- 11:04is being made fun of and being struck.
- 11:08And we would watch in horror as this perfect, sinless man who
- 11:14had done nothing wrong would be struck and beaten. 4 Pilate says
- 11:25that he finds no fault in him. Five Then came Jesus forth, and
- 11:30Pilate says, Behold the man, and we need to behold him. 6 When
- 11:35the chief priest therefore and officer saw him, they cried out,
- 11:40saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
- 11:45Pilate said unto them, You take him and crucify him.
- 11:49I find no fault in him here. Pilate again, he is wise in
- 11:54telling them that Jesus is innocent.
- 11:58He could not get Jesus to admit any fault because Jesus had
- 12:03nothing to admit. Jesus had nothing to tell on
- 12:07himself about. Jesus remained silent like the
- 12:11sheep before the shears. He was led to the slaughter and
- 12:16we can see here that they are delusional because of the hatred
- 12:22that they have for this innocent man, because he threatened their
- 12:27way of life. And they were in fear because
- 12:31they thought that they would lose their autonomy amongst the
- 12:35Romans. And they wanted to keep their
- 12:39playground. They wanted to keep their
- 12:42Playhouse. They wanted to keep the temple.
- 12:45They wanted to keep all of their rules and regulations and
- 12:48traditions and ceremony. And Jesus came to show them a
- 12:52better way, and to speak a better word, and to show them
- 12:57that God's plan for the ages was for his salvation to go out to
- 13:04the world, not just to be kept hidden under the bushel. 7 The
- 13:10Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to
- 13:15die, because he made himself the Son of God.
- 13:19So here the truth comes out. Whenever they were first
- 13:22bringing him to Pilate, they tried to pin him with the crime
- 13:27of making himself out to be a king, and Pilate wouldn't buy
- 13:32it. Pilate saw through it.
- 13:34Pilate was wise enough to understand that they were
- 13:37envious. And here you can see that the
- 13:41truth comes out that because he claimed to be the Son of God,
- 13:47they were putting him to death. And Pilate here started to shake
- 13:53in his boots, because he had not realized that this was the
- 13:58actual charge that was being brought against him.
- 14:02He knew that there was something more, but he did not know until
- 14:06this moment when the truth comes out.
- 14:10Eight. When Pilate therefore heard that
- 14:12saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the
- 14:17judgment hall and said unto Jesus, Where are you from?
- 14:23But Jesus gave him no answer. It is because Jesus had already
- 14:27given him the answer to his question.
- 14:30He told them that His Kingdom was not of this world, and here
- 14:35he had no need to reiterate what was already spoken.
- 14:40And so many times in our lives, friends, God will speak a word
- 14:45over us, but we refuse to hear it.
- 14:48We refuse to obey it. And we keep searching and
- 14:51prodding and asking God for more answers.
- 14:54But God is silent because he has already given us all of the
- 15:00revelation that we need. And this entire book that you
- 15:04hold in your hands is God's revelation unto mankind.
- 15:09And if we will not believe this complete work, this complete
- 15:16word, then why would God continue to reveal more to us
- 15:21when we refuse to obey what is already revealed to us?
- 15:25So here Jesus has already revealed to Pilate where he is
- 15:30from. So he needs to not answer him.
- 15:33He needs not answer him here. 10 Then said Pilate unto him, You
- 15:43do not speak to me. Do you not know that I have the
- 15:47power to crucify you, and I have the power to release you?
- 15:51So here Pilate is enamored by Jesus's silence.
- 15:57Pilate is thrown off by the fact that Jesus speaks nothing
- 16:05because he is not afraid of Pilate.
- 16:09Here Jesus is not trying to when his life back, He's not trying
- 16:14to save his skin. And this was unlike anything
- 16:19Pilate had ever went through. I'm sure there was a moment here
- 16:24where Pilate was completely turned around and thrown off by
- 16:29the fact that Jesus Christ did not behave like any of the other
- 16:34prisoners that he had had that was being LED off to be
- 16:38crucified. Here Jesus beaten, struck and
- 16:42bruised. Here Jesus remained silent and
- 16:47Pilate could not comprehend it. 11 Jesus answered, You could
- 16:54have no power at all against me, except it were given to you from
- 16:59above. Therefore, he that delivered me
- 17:03to you has the greater sin. So it is a greater sin to
- 17:09understand who Jesus is and then to turn back.
- 17:13It is a greater sin to understand the promises
- 17:17contained in the Word of God and to fall away.
- 17:20The apostate church is in much graver sin than those who are
- 17:26isolated as an unreached people group in the middle of nowhere.
- 17:31And it is such a heavyweight whenever we understand how to be
- 17:37saved and we refuse it when we blasphemy the Holy Spirit.
- 17:41And here Jesus is of course talking about Caiaphas and of
- 17:45course talking about Judas, and of course talking about the Jews
- 17:50who were screaming out for him to be crucified.
- 17:54And here Pilate has to deal with the fact that these men were
- 18:01about to start a revolt. They were about to start mob
- 18:07rule. And here Pilot would have known
- 18:11that his job was on the line, his reputation was on the line,
- 18:15and there was already a revolt that led to Pilot being on the
- 18:20hot seat before Caesar. And here you can see that the
- 18:25Jews played into it, and it was all a big master plan from God
- 18:32Almighty. He knew everything and He knows
- 18:35everything. And we would do well to make
- 18:37sure that we fall in line with the will of God, no matter if it
- 18:41goes against the way that we think things should go.
- 18:45We need to make sure that we are found sitting and learning and
- 18:50being at the Lord's feet, worshiping Him in spirit and
- 18:54truth, and knowing that we're being LED through valleys and
- 18:58mountaintops and through it all, friends, we need to know that
- 19:03Jesus Christ is the one that's leading us because we are his
- 19:06sheep and we hear his voice and he calls us into places that
- 19:11we're uncomfortable with, but he grows us in the silence. 12:00
- 19:17And from then on, Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews
- 19:20cried out, saying, if you let this man go, you are no friend
- 19:24of Caesar's. So this would have been the
- 19:27moment that Pilot's hair stood up on the back of his neck.
- 19:31This would have been the moment that things got really real
- 19:36because they called in their trump card.
- 19:39They called in the piece to the whole puzzle that Pilot would
- 19:46have been disarmed. It's the moment that Pilate
- 19:51heard that he was no friend of Caesar's.
- 19:54He realized that he had been outmaneuvered and outsmarted by
- 19:58these Jews. 13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he
- 20:04brought Jesus forth, sat down in the judgment seat in a place
- 20:10that is called the pavement, but in Hebrew gabbata.
- 20:13So we know that this would have been in a elevated position high
- 20:17above the crowds. And we also know that that
- 20:24Pilate would have washed his hands trying to remove the guilt
- 20:29of this unnecessary murder of a innocent man.
- 20:35But we all know that this was the divine plan of God. 14 and
- 20:40it was the preparation of the Passover in about the 6th hour.
- 20:45And he said unto the Jews, Behold your king.
- 20:48So here Pilot is playing, even though he knows what's about to
- 20:55happen here he is playing to the emotions of the crowd, and he
- 21:00knows that they're giving him up out of envy.
- 21:04And he knows that his hands are tied, and he still prods and
- 21:10goads them with this. He knows that they were wrong in
- 21:16delivering him up, even if they had backed him into a corner
- 21:20here. His last limited little bit of
- 21:23power he uses over them to show them that Jesus Christ is the
- 21:30Son of God, and that Jesus Christ did not deserve to die
- 21:34this criminal's death. And here he brings him out with
- 21:38the crown of thorns. He brings him out with the
- 21:41purple robe. He brings him out, and he says,
- 21:45Behold your King. 15 But they cried out, away with him, away
- 21:51with him. Crucify him.
- 21:53Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your king?
- 21:57The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
- 22:03This is the truth and this is the reality, that the Jews here
- 22:09were not serving God. The Jews here were serving self.
- 22:14They were serving their own means to an end.
- 22:17They were serving greed and mammon.
- 22:20They were serving so much of the power that they desired.
- 22:26They were serving sin and self, and they were admitting that
- 22:31they did not serve God. They were not in tune with God.
- 22:35They didn't even understand how all of this was adding up to
- 22:40prophecy being fulfilled. They were blinded and delusional
- 22:44and they admitted their guilt. And by your words you will be
- 22:48justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
- 22:52And they condemned themselves here in this moment. 16 Then
- 22:57delivered he, him therefore unto them to be crucified.
- 23:03And they took Jesus and led him away.
- 23:06Another one of the ways that the gospel writers save us from all
- 23:13of the gore and all of the horror in just a few sentences,
- 23:19in just a very plain way, they describe things that are
- 23:25incomprehensible to us in our modern age.
- 23:30The horror of what a person would have to go through to be
- 23:37crucified is not anything that we here in our own minds can
- 23:46even try to conceive, because they saved us from all of the
- 23:53bloody details. But we would do well to meditate
- 23:58upon the fact that this is for our salvation.
- 24:05And Jesus went through graphic horror for you and for me, and
- 24:12we need to know that if we were the only ones on planet earth
- 24:16who would ever give our lives over to the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 24:19he would willingly do it again. 17 And he bearing his cross,
- 24:25went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is
- 24:30called in the Hebrew. So he would have been carrying
- 24:34100 LB crossbeam across his back as he's moving through the
- 24:41crowd, after he'd been beaten, after he had been awake all
- 24:47night and struck, after he had been scourged here.
- 24:52Now he is forced to carry this 100 LB crossbeam 18 where they
- 24:59crucified him and two others with him on either side, one and
- 25:05Jesus in the middle. So here we can see there's so
- 25:10much tapestry in these couple verses.
- 25:15We know that Jesus was in the middle and he is the only way to
- 25:20the Father. We see that one criminal mocked
- 25:24him and the other criminal was ushered into paradise that day.
- 25:29We can see that humanity is on both sides and we must come to
- 25:35the Father through his Son Jesus Christ, as he is the mediator
- 25:39for us. It's 19 and Pilate wrote a title
- 25:45and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus of
- 25:50Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Rightfully so.
- 25:54Here is Pilate trying to make every wrong thing right.
- 26:01He's trying to write all of His wrongs whenever he saw that
- 26:06there was no fault in him. And he tried to wash his hands.
- 26:10And this is his one last attempt to stand up to the Jews.
- 26:14And he wrote an inscription here that he knew would stir them and
- 26:19move them. And as everyone looked upon the
- 26:22cross, they would have to wrestle with these words.
- 26:26And it was rightfully placed that Jesus of Nazareth, the
- 26:30branch, is the King of the world, friends.
- 26:35He is the king of our salvation, friends.
- 26:38He is the king of all nations and all people groups for all
- 26:44time's sake. He never goes out of style.
- 26:48He never gets old, He never gets boring.
- 26:51It only gets better. It's like a fine bottle of wine,
- 26:54friends. Jesus Christ.
- 26:56Over time He only gets more powerful as our revelation of
- 27:01Him comes more and more and more into scope.
- 27:06We can see that Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the only way
- 27:11to the Father. 20 This title then read many of the Jews.
- 27:17For the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city,
- 27:20and it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latin.
- 27:23So we can see that this was a metropolis of mingled with so
- 27:28many different people groups. And you can see it was written
- 27:31in all the languages of the land so that everyone could read and
- 27:36everyone could make a decision of who this man was hanging on
- 27:41the cross, unlike any man ever to hang on a cross.
- 27:46And he is the only one that can take away our sins. 21 Then said
- 27:52the chief priest of the Jews to Pilate right, not the king of
- 27:57the Jews, but that he said, I am the king of the Jews here.
- 28:01They're trying to get rid of the guilt that they have.
- 28:06They're trying to get rid of the shame that they have.
- 28:09They're trying to get rid and cover up their tracks. 22 Pilot
- 28:15answered. What I've written, I've written.
- 28:19And he knew that it was out of envy. 23 Then the soldiers, when
- 28:24they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts
- 28:29to every soldier a part, and also his coat.
- 28:32Now the coat was without seeing, woven from the top throughout.
- 28:37So you can see here that these criminals were crucified naked
- 28:42as he sat on the cross. And it would have been shame
- 28:46that brought about His glory. Friends, here you can see
- 28:51Scripture being fulfilled. You can see here that all of
- 28:58this was written about before it ever even happened, as if it had
- 29:03already happened. And that is prophecy in a
- 29:05nutshell. And there are many prophecies
- 29:08now that were are written in a matter of fact way and they will
- 29:12be fulfilled to the exact minuteness that they are written
- 29:16about. And we cannot throw them away,
- 29:20we cannot relegate them to mystery.
- 29:24They are plain, they are black and white, and they will be
- 29:28fulfilled in the exact way that they are written, just like all
- 29:33of this was fulfilled. And it proves that we can trust
- 29:36the Bible. 24 They said, therefore among themselves, let
- 29:43us not RIP it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be, that the
- 29:49Scripture might be fulfilled, which said, They parted my
- 29:52clothing among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots.
- 29:57These things, therefore the soldiers did. 25 Now there stood
- 30:02by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister,
- 30:06Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
- 30:11So you can see here that these women who followed him around in
- 30:15faith, you can see here his mother and his aunt.
- 30:19You can see here that these women were looking upon him,
- 30:23wondering what this was all about.
- 30:25But we know that it was prophesied by Simeon that Jesus
- 30:31would prick Mary's heart. And we see here that this is in
- 30:36the fulfillment of the prophecy, that as she looked upon Him, she
- 30:40was stricken with grief. 26 Then Jesus therefore saw his mother
- 30:46and the disciples standing by whom he loved.
- 30:49He said unto his mother, Woman, behold your son.
- 30:53So we can see here, This was compassion.
- 30:57We see here that the family of believers is more important than
- 31:04the earthly carnal ties that we have through bloodlines.
- 31:10We can see here that once we are entered into the family of God,
- 31:14it supersedes all of our earthly relationships.
- 31:19And here we know that Jesus's brothers were not disciples as
- 31:25of yet, even though they would go on to be.
- 31:28And we could see here that Mary was given to John, and that John
- 31:32honored his Master's wishes and took him home. 27 Then said he
- 31:40to the disciples, Behold your mother.
- 31:42And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. 28
- 31:47After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now
- 31:50accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I
- 31:54thirst, He's about to make his last proclamation there at
- 32:01Golgotha on Calvary. And so he takes this wine that
- 32:07the soldiers would have used to quench their thirst on the day
- 32:12as they're out there watching these criminals die a horrific
- 32:17death. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they
- 32:23filled a sponge with vinegar and put it upon a hyssop and put it
- 32:27to his mouth. You can see the Passover lamb
- 32:30and the hyssop and being the blood being on the lentil of the
- 32:35door. We can see it all mirrored and
- 32:38modeled here. We can see that there's so much
- 32:40tapestry, there's so many layers here, friends, if you lock in
- 32:45and pay attention. And we can see here that Jesus
- 32:48did not take the stupefying drug mingled wine that they offered
- 32:55him in the beginning. But here at the end he drinks a
- 32:58little bit of this wine and he quenches his thirst.
- 33:03He he wets his lips so that he can make this last proclamation.
- 33:1230 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said to
- 33:17Telesty, he says paid in full. He says it is finished.
- 33:23And he bowed his head and gave up the ghost.
- 33:26No one took it from him. He gave it up willingly for you.
- 33:30He gave it up willingly for me. He laid his head down.
- 33:36This is not him hanging his head in shame.
- 33:40This is power from on high, because He gave up the ghost. 31
- 33:47The Jews, therefore, because it was the preparation that the
- 33:50body should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, for
- 33:54that Sabbath day was a high day, they begged Pilate, for the legs
- 33:58might be broken, that they might be taken away.
- 34:02So here is prophecy being fulfilled.
- 34:05Whenever Jesus looks at the Sinner and says Today you will
- 34:08be with me in paradise. And here you can see that the
- 34:13criminals at some points in time during these crucifixions, it
- 34:19might take up to three days for them to die.
- 34:22And here because this is a high holy day and they did not want
- 34:26to crucify Jesus during this time, but because of Judas and
- 34:30because he sold them out when he did.
- 34:32And because they saw that it was profitable in the moment and
- 34:36they were trying to cover up their tracks and they thought
- 34:38they could do it by night. And they thought they could get
- 34:40Rome to do their dirty work, and they thought they could crucify
- 34:43them outside of the city. And they thought that no one
- 34:46would notice. And look how he flipped the
- 34:48whole world right side up. And you can see here we're still
- 34:57talking about it 2000 years later.
- 35:00And everything changed this day. And the Jews here were so
- 35:04delusional that they thought that they could just cover their
- 35:08tracks. 32 Then came the soldiers and broke the legs of
- 35:14the 1st and of the other, which was crucified with him. 33 But
- 35:20when they came to Jesus and saw that he was dead already, they
- 35:24did not break his legs. Prophecy being fulfilled here,
- 35:27friends. Also, you need to know that
- 35:31Jesus gave up the ghost. He did not stay there in just
- 35:35the agony for as long as it took, trying to hold on to the
- 35:39last little bit of life that He had left.
- 35:41No, Jesus went boldly to snatch the keys.
- 35:47He went boldly to proclaim to the spirits in prison.
- 35:52He went boldly to do the work of the Father as this exchange that
- 35:59happened here, where God poured out all the wrath of mankind on
- 36:04Jesus Christ. And as He took the sins of the
- 36:07world, we can come to Him. We can be covered in the blood,
- 36:11and we can stand before God, holy and blameless and
- 36:14righteous, before a holy and blameless and righteous God.
- 36:19And it is the only way that we're going to make it in,
- 36:21Friends. We can see it all modeled here
- 36:25in this moment and these soldiers were professional
- 36:32killers, and they would have been able to tell if someone was
- 36:35dead, dead. 34 But one of the soldiers with the spear pierced
- 36:41his side and forthwith came They're out, blood and water.
- 36:46Praise God, Hallelujah for this mixing of the blood and the
- 36:49water. We could see this being the all
- 36:55sufficient sacrifice for us, the atonement for our sins.
- 36:59We can see this living water we must drink and be filled with
- 37:06friends, and never be thirsty again. 35 And he that saw it
- 37:19bore record, and his record is true, and he knows that he said
- 37:24it's true that you might believe.
- 37:26So John is talking about himself, writing about himself,
- 37:29saying I actually saw this. I am an eyewitness to this.
- 37:33You can trust and believe. You can go check the track
- 37:38record. You can go talk to all the
- 37:40people in the land during this time, and they will all tell you
- 37:44there's enough people who saw it.
- 37:47From the Romans to the Jews to the spectators, the rich and the
- 37:50poor. You can see that this is
- 37:53trustworthy and true, and it is profitable for all time's sake.
- 37:57Heaven and earth may pass away, but not one of these words,
- 38:00friends. 36 For these things were done, that the Scripture
- 38:07should be fulfilled. A bone of him shall not be
- 38:10broken. 37 And again, another Scripture said, They shall look
- 38:14on him whom they pierced, prophecy after prophecy after
- 38:18prophecy after prophecy after prophecy being fulfilled on this
- 38:23day and this hour, friends. And it's no different for us
- 38:26now. There are so many prophecies of
- 38:30the Word of God that are being fulfilled today, and we would do
- 38:35well to make sure that we do not try to discredit and discount
- 38:39them. Believe every single syllable,
- 38:44and you will be blessed. 38 And after this, Joseph of Arimathea,
- 38:51being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for the fear of the
- 38:55Jews, they begged Pilate that he might take away the body of
- 38:59Jesus. And Pilate gave him leave.
- 39:02He came there for and took the body of Jesus.
- 39:05So we can see here, friends, the beauty of Joseph of Arimathea,
- 39:13this rich man, and he is the one that Jesus said it is impossible
- 39:19with man, but with God all things are possible.
- 39:22And we can see here that the wealthy and the rich are called
- 39:30to steward their blessings in a holy way, in a way that pleases
- 39:36God. And by and large, most do not.
- 39:39But here we can see that Joseph of Arimathea, we can see that
- 39:42Nicodemus, they understood it, but because they did not want to
- 39:48reveal that they were followers of the way, they actually in a
- 39:57roundabout way, they helped the cause.
- 40:03And this calls for wisdom, Friends, we cannot shrink back.
- 40:06We cannot have the fear of man. But look at how, when we're
- 40:10following closely after the Lord God Almighty, He might call us
- 40:16into the paths that do not make sense to us.
- 40:20Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus should have been
- 40:23outright in their profession of Jesus Christ, but because they
- 40:27were not, they actually were able to help him.
- 40:33What a thought, friends. And you can see that God's ways
- 40:37are not our ways, but we must get connected with Him.
- 40:40We must be in tune with Him, and sometimes He's going to call us
- 40:44to do things that are counter intuitive to the way that we
- 40:47understand things and praise God.
- 40:50Hallelujah that Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were
- 40:54silent about their profession during this time, and look how
- 40:58they got honored in the Word of God. 39 And there came also
- 41:06Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and
- 41:11brought a mixture of myrrh and aloe, about 100 lbs in weight.
- 41:15You can see this extravagant luxury being poured out on Jesus
- 41:22Christ as he goes to the tomb, smelling like spikenard,
- 41:27smelling like myrrh and aloe. 30 Then took they the body of Jesus
- 41:34and wounded in a linen cloth with the spices, as the manner
- 41:39of the Jews is to bury. So this would have been a linen
- 41:46shroud that would have been wrapped around him, friends.
- 41:50But he wasn't going to stay there.
- 41:52He was only borrowing this tomb, and the Jews were very
- 41:58scrupulous in the way that they did their burials as they placed
- 42:05them in the tomb and put the bones in the ossuary.
- 42:09You can see here that they were very honoring of the way that
- 42:14they buried. They did not leave Jesus up for
- 42:18the wolves, for the birds, for the wild animals to come and
- 42:24ravage. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was
- 42:30a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, wherein was never laid
- 42:36a man yet. So we know this is Joseph of
- 42:39Arimathea, as it was in close proximity to the cross.
- 42:42Look at how everything got all turned around in a garden and
- 42:48everything was all brought back into the right path in a garden.
- 42:55You can see here that Jesus is making everything right and that
- 43:02we can trust Him and that there's so many layers of
- 43:08tapestry here and it's beautiful. 42 will end here.
- 43:14They're laid, they Jesus. Therefore, because of the Jews,
- 43:18preparation day for the tomb was near at hand.
- 43:23So here Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, and here you can see
- 43:28that Pilate gives them these rich, wealthy, righteous leaders
- 43:35of the land. He gives them permission to take
- 43:39down this body. And look at how these men were
- 43:42handling this lifeless body. But Jesus was going to work for
- 43:48you and for me. Praise God.
- 43:49Hallelujah. I hope you've been blessed by
- 43:51this monumental chapter here in the Word of God and everything
- 43:57is hinged upon this chapter. Everything, our faith and
- 44:01everything we believe is hinged upon the Gospels.
- 44:06Friends, we're going to see it as we move into the New
- 44:09Testament. We're going to see it as we go
- 44:11backwards into the Old Testament.
- 44:13We're going to see that everything is hinged upon this
- 44:16moment. Give Him His due praise and
- 44:19glory. I hope you've been blessed by
- 44:21this chapter. I know I sure have.
- 44:27I'm praying for you. I love you.
- 44:31I'll see you back here tomorrow. God bless you.
