- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. It's early.
- 0:30I'm in the garage. It's dark, it's cold.
- 0:33I'm surrounded by plants that I ran in last night at the last
- 0:37minute, some extra ones from outside that I wasn't ready to
- 0:40lose yet. My some of my pots that, you
- 0:44know, have annuals in them. But I'm like, I know it's going
- 0:47to be warm again in a couple of days.
- 0:48So I stuffed everybody in the garage and I'm standing in here
- 0:51with them. And one of the things that I
- 0:55learned yesterday about myself, and you know, if you're a
- 0:57regular listener, you know that I have issues with cutting
- 1:01flowers that are not in the designated cut flower garden
- 1:05because I have that whole side of me that's very like connected
- 1:08to them. And I don't want to like take
- 1:10their life and bring them in and say, oh, you know, unless they
- 1:14knew that's what was happening to them.
- 1:17And that includes my rose Bush. And I have these big, I've
- 1:21experiment with lots of different things here in the
- 1:23last five years because being here, well, really the last four
- 1:27years, because the year we moved in, I didn't get to do too much,
- 1:31but I've done a ton of experimenting because the
- 1:34conditions here are harsh and, and I do genuinely mean that
- 1:38while they can be ideal for some plants, they can be really
- 1:42harsh. And because I like certain
- 1:44things was, as we all know, if you, again, if you're a regular
- 1:47listener and you know, my fiasco with peonies and ranunculus and
- 1:51things like that, where I was insistent, I was insistent it
- 1:55was going to work. And it doesn't, you know, it
- 1:58just doesn't work. You might get a plant, but it
- 2:01doesn't mean it's going to flower.
- 2:02You just can't. I mean, I personally here on
- 2:06this patch of five and a quarter acres, I cannot do it.
- 2:10So I'm like, all right, whatever I have to say, I tried that.
- 2:15It did not work. I'm going to move on because I
- 2:18know it's something to do with the conditions of that plant.
- 2:22And I always work trying very hard to like, you know, give
- 2:26them the intent. Even when I have seeds, I'm
- 2:29like, like really in my brain, I, as I'm planting the seeds,
- 2:33I'm like talking to them. I'm blessing them.
- 2:34I'm telling them that they, you know, I'm so happy that they're
- 2:38here. I can't wait to take care of
- 2:39them. I give them my whole little like
- 2:42good juju that I'm pouring into this and my roses are not in a
- 2:48spot where I cut them like they are not.
- 2:51They are in a spot where I want to see them all the time.
- 2:54So they're right in front of the chicken coop run.
- 2:56I've planted some in different spots, but some of them don't
- 3:00thrive where they are. They do OK, but they don't
- 3:03thrive. And it could just be other
- 3:06conditions that show up. It could just be that it's not
- 3:09that right kind of flower for here, who knows what it is.
- 3:13But this particular rose Bush that I have, it's called James
- 3:17Galloway from David Austin Roses.
- 3:20It just goes crazy all summer. Like from the moment spring hits
- 3:25all the way till right now, it goes crazy.
- 3:28In fact, it's so awesome and so gorgeous.
- 3:30I'm going to order more and I'm going to line the whole front of
- 3:34the chicken coop run with them because they are spectacular.
- 3:39The color, the size, everything about them is absolutely
- 3:43stunning. So I'm going to replicate it.
- 3:46Now some may say, well, why wouldn't you try different
- 3:48kinds? Well, I have other kinds out
- 3:49there and they're not thriving, so I've got to dig them up, move
- 3:52them and put them somewhere else because they don't like it
- 3:54there. But for some reason, this
- 3:56particular one loves it and I love watching it and I'm always
- 4:01out there deadheading it. And as soon as I deadhead, I get
- 4:04more and we just have a great relationship.
- 4:07Me and this rose Bush, I love it.
- 4:09Well, last night, I mean, it's been blooming all along and I
- 4:13knew it's going to be the freeze, right?
- 4:15This is the freeze. It's coming tonight, the first
- 4:18one early than expected for sure, but it's headed this way.
- 4:21So I have to make a decision. Am I just going to leave them on
- 4:25there or am I going to take them in?
- 4:27Because I don't normally cut unless I'm dead heading and
- 4:30that's just my thing. So I had this whole debate in my
- 4:33head. Everyone on my bus, all the
- 4:35committee emotions of the committee had to meet, and I
- 4:39pulled an executive order and said, you know what?
- 4:42I'm going to cut them and covet them in the House and just
- 4:45really enjoy them. Put them in a vase right on the
- 4:48sink and take the time to love them because they're the last
- 4:52roses of the season. I shot a video about it and the
- 4:56process of doing that, it seems so silly, but for me, it's a
- 5:00really big deal. I don't like cutting them.
- 5:03I was struggling last night because I saw butterflies still
- 5:07out there on some of my Mexican sunflowers.
- 5:11And I was like, Oh my gosh, this is going to be like, what's
- 5:16going to happen to them? And I started to have the panic
- 5:18in me about how can I protect these butterflies overnight?
- 5:22And I'm like, I can't. This is Mother Nature.
- 5:24They know what to do. I have all the stuff out there.
- 5:27Those sunflowers should be able to last if we just get down.
- 5:31And we're hovering right at 33 right now.
- 5:34So it might be that everything's OK, We'll see.
- 5:39But I ended up cutting the roses and I ended up bringing them in
- 5:42and I ended up, no joke, I was crying while I was cutting them,
- 5:47apologizing, saying I'm taking you in so I can enjoy the last
- 5:50bit of you. I appreciate you.
- 5:53And it seems like, you know, I took them in and it seems to me
- 5:59that is as soon as I brought them in the house, they got more
- 6:02beautiful. They expanded.
- 6:03Now, it may be my imagination and I may be having silly
- 6:06imaginative thoughts, but I really think that they filled
- 6:10out more in the warmth. They filled out more.
- 6:12They look fantastic and they're giving me their last push as a
- 6:16gift. So I think they understood.
- 6:19I understood. And the last roses of the season
- 6:22have been cut, and now we really hunker down and we get ready for
- 6:27next year. But in the process of it, I
- 6:29learned a lot about myself and I recognize I'm still, I still
- 6:33have that issue where I don't like to cut.
- 6:35I still have that softness and I'm OK with that.
- 6:38And I'm going to plant a hell of a lot more roses.
- 6:41So I hope you guys have a blessed day and don't be ashamed
- 6:45if you have those same thoughts because they're part of us.
- 6:48It's the softness of us. And I'm OK with that feminine
- 6:51part of myself. I really love her.
- 6:53And I think that she deserves to, you know, get a pat on the
- 6:56back for loving things so much. So I hope you guys have a
- 7:00blessed day and I hope you pat yourselves on the back and I
- 7:02will see you tomorrow. Bye.
