- 0:00Welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:01We are glad you're sitting in with us today.
- 0:03We've got a stack of commentaries, some Greek
- 0:06lexicons, and a really heavy topic to get through.
- 0:10Today we are looking at something that, well, it really
- 0:14defines us as human beings. We are talking about belonging.
- 0:17It's a thing everyone is looking for, isn't it?
- 0:19We all want to know who our people are.
- 0:20We want to know where we fit. Right.
- 0:22And usually when we try to answer that question, who are my
- 0:25people? We we look at biology, we look
- 0:27at our last. Name your heritage.
- 0:29Yeah, the social circles you were born into.
- 0:31We have this instinct that says if I have the right DNA or if I
- 0:36come from the right clan, I am safe.
- 0:38It's the way the world has always worked.
- 0:41Blood is thicker than water, as the saying goes.
- 0:43Your security is tied up in your lineage.
- 0:46But today we are opening up Matthew chapter 12, specifically
- 0:50verses 46 through 50, and we're going to see Jesus take that
- 0:54instinct that that universal human reliance on family and
- 0:57heritage, and just completely dismantle it.
- 0:59He doesn't just dismantle it, he replaces it with something
- 1:02stronger. But you're right, it's a shock
- 1:04to the system. I mean if you read this text
- 1:07without your church filters on it's it's offensive.
- 1:11It is shocking you have Jesus own mother and brother showing
- 1:14up to talk to him and he seemingly ignores them.
- 1:17It looks like a snub. It looks like a flat out
- 1:19rejection, yeah, but what we are going to see is that Jesus isn't
- 1:23just being rude. He is doing something
- 1:26theological. He's reordering the entire
- 1:29universe of human relationships. He's redefining what the Word
- 1:32family actually means. Yes.
- 1:34And that's our mission for this deep dive.
- 1:36We want to understand how Jesus defines true spiritual kinship
- 1:40because he is going to argue that being part of God's family
- 1:43isn't about your bloodline. No, it's about the will of the
- 1:45Father. And that forces a hard question
- 1:47on everyone listening. What is the basis of your
- 1:50assurance? Do you feel safe with God
- 1:52because you know you grew up in a Christian?
- 1:54Home. Or do you feel secure because
- 1:56you have a religious last name? Or is your assurance based on
- 2:00true union with Christ? That is the question we are
- 2:02going to get into, but we can't just parachute into verse 46.
- 2:06That's not how we do it. We have to look at the
- 2:08neighborhood first. Where does this scene fall in
- 2:12Matthew's Gospel? Context is everything.
- 2:15This scene is not random at all. It's the climax of a very dark
- 2:20crescendo. Matthew 12 is a huge turning
- 2:22point in the book. OK, so set the stage for us what
- 2:25has been happening in this chapter before Jesus's mom shows
- 2:29up. Well, the chapter opens with a
- 2:31fight. A big one.
- 2:33The disciples are walking through a Greenfield on the
- 2:35Sabbath, and they're hungry, so they pluck some heads of grain
- 2:38to eat. Right.
- 2:39And the Pharisees see this. The Pharisees see this and they
- 2:41lose their minds. To us, that sounds like such a
- 2:43minor infraction. It's like picking an apple as
- 2:46you walk past a tree. It seems that way to us.
- 2:48But for them, the Sabbath was everything.
- 2:50It was the national flag, it was the sign of the covenant.
- 2:53And by the 1st century, the religious leaders had built all
- 2:56these these fences around the law, all these extra rules.
- 3:00To protect the law in their view.
- 3:02In their view, yeah. So plucking grain was
- 3:04technically harvesting, and rubbing it in your hands to get
- 3:07the husk off was threshing. So in their eyes, the disciples
- 3:12were breaking the law of God. They were working on the
- 3:15Sabbath. And Jesus's response is just
- 3:17it's a bombshell. He defends them.
- 3:20He says the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
- 3:22Which is a claim to deity. I mean, there's no way around
- 3:25it. Only God is Lord the Sabbath.
- 3:27He's saying I get to decide what this day is about.
- 3:30So the tension is already incredibly high.
- 3:33It is, but then immediately after that, he walks into their
- 3:37synagogue. He double s down and there's a
- 3:40man there with a withered hand. And the Pharisees are watching
- 3:43him. They're just waiting.
- 3:44It's a trap. It's a total trap.
- 3:46See, Rabbinic tradition said you could only provide medical help
- 3:48on the Sabbath if it was a life or death situation.
- 3:51A withered hand is tragic, but it's not fatal.
- 3:54Right. It's a chronic condition.
- 3:56It could wait until Sunday or Monday.
- 3:59But Jesus doesn't wait. He heals him right there in
- 4:01front of everyone. He deliberately provokes them.
- 4:05He wants to show that mercy triumphs over their man made
- 4:08rules, that the Sabbath is for blessing people, not binding
- 4:12them. And the reaction, this is where
- 4:14it all turns. The reaction in verse 14.
- 4:16This is the pivot point for the whole gospel really.
- 4:19But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him.
- 4:22How to destroy Him? Destroy.
- 4:24That's not just disagreement. That's not let's have another
- 4:27debate. That's murder.
- 4:29It's a plot. It's the first time in Matthew
- 4:32that the religious leaders officially decide to kill him.
- 4:35So the atmosphere is totally changed.
- 4:37We are not in a friendly debate anymore.
- 4:39We're in a war zone. A spiritual war zone.
- 4:41And it gets even darker just a few verses later.
- 4:44Jesus casts out a demon. A man who was blind and mute
- 4:49gets his sight and speech back. It's this beautiful moment of
- 4:52liberation, a clear act of God. And what do the Pharisees say?
- 4:56How do they explain this? Well, they can't deny the
- 4:58miracle. The power is undeniable, the
- 5:00whole crowd sees it. So they have to attack the
- 5:02source of the power. And their explanation is.
- 5:04They say it is only by Beelzebel, the Prince of demons,
- 5:06that this man casts out demons. They look at the work of the
- 5:09Holy Spirit and they call it the work of Satan.
- 5:12Which Jesus calls the blasphemy against the Spirit the
- 5:16unforgivable sin. He looks at the leaders of
- 5:18Israel, the people who knew the Scriptures better than anyone,
- 5:21and he calls them an evil and adulterous generation.
- 5:25So by the time we get to the end of the chapter, the lines are
- 5:27drawn. You have the insiders, the
- 5:30Pharisees, the scribes, the leaders who are now officially
- 5:34outsiders of the Kingdom. Correct.
- 5:37Matthew is setting up this massive theme here.
- 5:40Who is in and who is out? The people who should be in.
- 5:43The ones with all the religious credentials?
- 5:45They're out. The people who should be out.
- 5:47The messy disciples, the tax collectors, They're in.
- 5:50And that is the tension hanging in the air when we get to verse
- 5:5246. Jesus is in a house, He's
- 5:54teaching the people, He's dispensing the word of God.
- 5:57And then we get this, this domestic interruption.
- 6:00Right, verse 46 says while he was still speaking to the
- 6:03people, behold, his mother and brothers stood outside asking to
- 6:07speak to him. OK, I want to focus on that
- 6:09phrase for a second. Stood outside the Greek is Hesto
- 6:11Kaizon Iksham. And Matthew is a very, very
- 6:15careful writer. He puts words in certain places
- 6:18for a reason. So it's not just a geographical
- 6:21note. No, that phrase is doing double
- 6:22duty. Yes, it describes their physical
- 6:24location. The house is probably crowded,
- 6:26so they were standing out on the street, but but theologically in
- 6:30Matthew, being outside is a terrible place to be.
- 6:35Later in the gospel, Jesus warns about being cast into the outer
- 6:38darkness. Where there is weeping and
- 6:40gnashing of teeth. So visually Matthew is painting
- 6:43a picture for you. You have the disciples sitting
- 6:46inside the house at Jesus feet hearing the word and you have
- 6:50the biological family outside the house.
- 6:52It's a complete reversal of expectations A.
- 6:54Total reversal. The people who share his DNA are
- 6:57on the outside looking in. The people who share his mission
- 6:59are on the inside. And they send a request they
- 7:01want to speak to him. Now we need to understand the
- 7:03culture here in our world. If I'm busy at work and my mom
- 7:07calls I, I might let it go to voicemail.
- 7:09You might, but in the 1st century Near East?
- 7:14Never. That's just unthinkable.
- 7:16That culture was built on the clan.
- 7:18The family was the primary unit of survival and identity.
- 7:21You weren't an individual first. Not at all.
- 7:23You were a son, a brother, a member of the tribe.
- 7:26The collective outweigh the individual by a mile.
- 7:29So if the matriarch of the family and the older brothers
- 7:32show up, that's a summons. It's not a suggestion, no.
- 7:35It's a command the crowd would have expected Jesus to stop
- 7:38everything to say. Oh, pardon me everyone.
- 7:41My mother is here. I must go.
- 7:43That was the honorable thing to do.
- 7:44So when he doesn't do that, it creates a massive amount of
- 7:48tension in the room. It's a test.
- 7:50It's a narrative test. Satan tempted Jesus in the
- 7:53wilderness to abandon his mission for power.
- 7:55Now the temptations more subtle, it's more relatable.
- 7:59Will he abandoned his mission for natural affection and.
- 8:01He let flesh and blood dictate the schedule of the Kingdom.
- 8:05That's the question. And there's a messenger, right?
- 8:09Some from the crowd taps Jesus on the shoulder and says, hey,
- 8:12your mother and brothers are outside.
- 8:14And notice how Jesus treats the messenger.
- 8:17He doesn't panic. He doesn't get flustered.
- 8:19He uses the interruption as a prop.
- 8:22He uses this moment to make a divine pronouncement.
- 8:26He is not a victim of circumstance here.
- 8:29He is the master teacher, seizing a moment.
- 8:31OK, so before we get to what he actually says, we have to deal
- 8:34with the historical controversy. The text is very clear.
- 8:38It mentions his brothers. His mother and his brothers,
- 8:41yes. Now if you.
- 8:41Come from a Roman Catholic background, that phrase might
- 8:44sound strange because there is the dogma of the perpetual
- 8:48virginity of Mary, the idea that she remained a virgin her whole
- 8:51life. Correct.
- 8:52So if that is true, she couldn't have had other children.
- 8:55Which means you have to explain who these brothers are.
- 8:58This has been a debate for centuries.
- 9:00If you are committed to the idea that Mary never had normal
- 9:03marital relations with Joseph, you have to find an explanation
- 9:06for these men. And one of the common views
- 9:09comes from Jerome, right? He argued they were cousins.
- 9:12Right. Jerome in the 4th century argued
- 9:15that the word Adelpho's brother could be used elastically to
- 9:19mean cousin or kinsman. So these are Jesus's cousins,
- 9:23maybe children of Mary's sister. Then there's the other main
- 9:25view, which you see more in the Eastern Orthodox tradition.
- 9:28Yes, that they were Joseph's children from her previous
- 9:30marriage. That Joseph was a widower when
- 9:32he married Mary and these were Jesus's older step brothers.
- 9:36So those are the 2 main ways to to get around the text.
- 9:39They are, but as we approach this from a reformed
- 9:42perspective, which means we let scripture speak louder than
- 9:45tradition, we have to look at the Greek itself.
- 9:48And the Greek is, yeah, it's pretty stubborn.
- 9:50Here it is. The Greek word for brother is a
- 9:52Delphos. It comes from a root, meaning
- 9:54from the same womb. It's a very specific biological
- 9:57word. So if Matthew wanted to say
- 9:59cousin, could he have? Was there a word for that?
- 10:01Easily the Greek language has a specific word for cousin
- 10:05inepsios, and we see that word used in the New Testament.
- 10:09In Colossians 4.10, Paul writes about Mark the Inepsios, the
- 10:14cousin of Barnabas. So the New Testament writers
- 10:17knew the difference between a brother and a cousin, and they
- 10:20use the right words. They certainly did, and Matthew
- 10:23consistently uses adelphos for these men.
- 10:26It's not just here in Matthew 13.55, just a chapter later, the
- 10:30people of Nazareth are offended by Jesus and they start listing
- 10:33his family members. Right, they say, is not his
- 10:35mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James
- 10:38and Joseph and Simon and Judas. They list them by name.
- 10:41That sounds like a nuclear family.
- 10:43It does. I mean, the most natural reading
- 10:45of the text, the reading you would come to if you didn't have
- 10:47a prior commitment to a specific dog, is that Mary and Joseph had
- 10:52a normal, healthy marriage after Jesus was born.
- 10:55They had other children. Which implies that Mary was
- 10:58fully human. She was a godly woman, blessed
- 11:00among women, as the Angel said, but she was a wife and a mother
- 11:04in the normal sense. And that matters.
- 11:06We do not need to elevate her to a semi divine status.
- 11:10Her honor comes from being the bearer of the Lord, not from
- 11:13being perpetually a virgin. Her obedience is her glory.
- 11:16But here's the tragic part of the history at this specific
- 11:21moment in the story. Do these brothers, do they
- 11:24believe in Jesus? No, absolutely not, and we don't
- 11:28have to guess. John 7.5 tells us plainly, for
- 11:32even his brothers did not believe in him.
- 11:34That is just staggering to think about.
- 11:36It's heavy. Think about the implications.
- 11:38These men grew up in the same house as the Son of God.
- 11:41They ate at the same table. They watched him grow up.
- 11:44They saw a life of absolute perfection for 30 years.
- 11:48No sin, no selfishness, perfect love, day in and day out.
- 11:52And he still missed it. They didn't get it.
- 11:53In fact, if you look at Mark's account of the same event in
- 11:56Mark chapter 3, it's even more pointed.
- 11:58Says they came to seize him, seize it because they thought he
- 12:01was out of his mind. They thought he had snapped.
- 12:03He had lost it. So they aren't just there to
- 12:05visit, they're there for an intervention.
- 12:07They're there to drag him home. Exactly.
- 12:09They are embarrassed. He's picking fights with the
- 12:12Pharisees. He's gathering these huge
- 12:14crowds. He's claiming to be Lord of the
- 12:16Sabbath. They think he is ruining the
- 12:18family reputation. This effectively just destroys
- 12:21the idea that grace is genetic or that salvation is a family
- 12:25inheritance. It absolutely does.
- 12:27It creates a category. We need to be very, very aware
- 12:29of the proximity illusion, the. Proximity illusion.
- 12:32Yes, you can be incredibly close to Jesus.
- 12:34You could be physically next to him.
- 12:36You could be his literal brother sharing the same mother.
- 12:39And you can still be standing outside spiritually.
- 12:43Proximity is not union. That is the key.
- 12:45That is the whole point. You can be near the fire and
- 12:48still freeze to death if you don't actually come inside and
- 12:50get the warmth. OK, so the message comes to
- 12:53Jesus, your family is outside and he responds with a question,
- 12:57a question that changes everything.
- 12:59Verse 48 Who is my mother and who are my brothers?
- 13:02Can you just imagine the hush in that crowd and the shame and
- 13:05honor culture? That is a slap in the face.
- 13:08It sounds like he is disowning them in public.
- 13:10It sounds like a direct, correct violation of the 5th
- 13:12commandment. Honor your father and mother.
- 13:14That is the tension everyone in the room would have felt.
- 13:18Wait a minute. Is this rabbi breaking the law
- 13:20of Moses? Is he dishonouring his parents?
- 13:23I mean, this is a radical statement.
- 13:25But we know Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly.
- 13:27So what is happening here? He is not breaking the 5th
- 13:29commandment, he is subordinating it.
- 13:31He is placing it in its proper order.
- 13:33Under the first commandment. Correct.
- 13:35The first commandment is you shall have no other gods before
- 13:38me. If loyalty to the family
- 13:41competes with loyalty to God's mission, God wins every single
- 13:45time. He is establishing a hierarchy
- 13:47of loves, a new set of priorities.
- 13:50He is. He's saying.
- 13:51I do not define myself primarily by my earthly lineage.
- 13:55I define myself by my Father's business.
- 13:57My identity is not from Nazareth.
- 13:59My identity is from heaven. And then he makes his gesture,
- 14:02verse 49, and stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he
- 14:05said, Here are my mother and my brothers.
- 14:08Look at where he points. This is so critical.
- 14:10He does not point to the Pharisees, the religious elite.
- 14:14He does not point to the wealthy patrons who might be funding his
- 14:16ministry. He points to his disciple.
- 14:18And who were they at this point? They were a mess.
- 14:21A total mess. Fisherman who smelled like fish.
- 14:24A tax collector who was considered a traitor to his own
- 14:27people. A zealot who wanted to overthrow
- 14:29Rome. They were sinners.
- 14:31They were constantly getting things wrong.
- 14:32He looks at this group of misfits and says this is my real
- 14:36family. It's a visual doctrine of
- 14:38election. He is choosing them, He is
- 14:41identifying with them, and it marks a massive shift in how God
- 14:45deals with His people. A dispensational shift, really.
- 14:48Yes, In the Old covenant, the people of God were largely
- 14:51defined by biology. You were in the covenant because
- 14:54you were son of Abraham. You were born into the tribe of
- 14:57Judah or Benjamin. Your birth certificate was your
- 14:59membership card in a sense. In a sense, yes.
- 15:03But Jesus is inaugurating the new covenant and the new
- 15:05covenant ecclesia. The Church is not defined by the
- 15:08blood of ancestors. It's not about your last name,
- 15:12it's defined by the blood of Christ.
- 15:13So the bond of the spirit is thicker than the bond of blood.
- 15:16That is the headline for this whole passage.
- 15:18The spiritual family is the real family.
- 15:21The biological family is the shadow.
- 15:22The Church is the substance. But he doesn't just point and
- 15:25say these guys, he gives a condition.
- 15:28He gives a definition in verse 50 that clarifies everything.
- 15:32Yes, he does, For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven
- 15:35is my brother and sister and mother.
- 15:38There is so much theology packed into that one sentence.
- 15:41Let's start with the whoever. Is wide open.
- 15:43It is the wideness of the gospel offer.
- 15:45It's not restricted by ethnicity, Jew or Gentile.
- 15:48It's not restricted by class, rich or poor.
- 15:50And notice, he says, brother and sister and mother.
- 15:53That inclusion of Sister and Mother is huge.
- 15:57In the 1st century, women were often marginalized in
- 16:00theological circles. They weren't considered
- 16:02disciples in the formal. Sense they were in a different
- 16:04category. They were, and Jesus elevates
- 16:07them. He says.
- 16:08A woman who does the will of God has the same spiritual dignity,
- 16:11the same status in the family as any man.
- 16:14It's a radical affirmation of spiritual equality.
- 16:17OK, but then comes the hard part, the condition.
- 16:20Whoever does the will of my father.
- 16:21This is where we have to be very, very precise, because as
- 16:24Reformed thinkers, we are allergic to works righteousness,
- 16:28and for good reason. Right.
- 16:30If you read this quickly, you might fall into the ditch of
- 16:33legalism. You might think, OK, Jesus is
- 16:36saying I have to obey perfectly to earn my way into the family.
- 16:40My performance gets me in. That's the legalist ditch.
- 16:43I obey, therefore I am accepted. That's the opposite of the
- 16:47gospel. That's slavery, not sonship.
- 16:51We know from the rest of the New Testament, Ephesians 2, Romans
- 16:533, that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works.
- 16:58So obedience does not purchase adoption.
- 17:01Correct. You don't mow the lawn to
- 17:03convince your dad to be your dad.
- 17:05You mow the lawn because he is your dad.
- 17:06The relationship precedes the action.
- 17:08But then there's the other ditch on the other side of the road.
- 17:10The antinomian ditch, the lawless ditch.
- 17:13The idea that I believe in Jesus.
- 17:15I signed a card 20 years ago so it doesn't matter how I live.
- 17:18Once saved, always saved, but in a way that ignores holiness and
- 17:22obedience completely. Jesus just destroys that idea
- 17:25here. He doesn't say whoever professes
- 17:27my name is my brother or whoever believes the right doctrines is
- 17:31my brother. He says whoever does the will.
- 17:33It reminds me of Matthew 7 at the end of the Sermon on the
- 17:35Mount. Not everyone who says to me,
- 17:38Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of heaven.
- 17:40But the one who does the will of my Father, who was in heaven,
- 17:44it's the exact same standard. An empty profession is not just
- 17:48useless, it's dangerous. The West and sincere confession
- 17:51of faith puts this beautifully. It says that faith is the alone
- 17:55instrument of justification. Faith is the only thing that
- 17:58connects us to Christ for salvation, but the faith that
- 18:01justifies is never alone. It's never alone, it always
- 18:05produces fruit, it always works by love.
- 18:08If there is no obedience, no desire to do the will of the
- 18:11Father, then there is no life and there is no life.
- 18:14There is no faith. So doing the will is the
- 18:16evidence, not the cause. It's the fruit, not the root.
- 18:19Precisely. It's the family resemblance.
- 18:22If you have the Father's DNA spiritually, through the new
- 18:25birth, you will start to act like the Father.
- 18:27You'll start to look like your older brother Jesus.
- 18:29So let's. Define doing the will.
- 18:31I love the Father because if it's not perfect obedience that
- 18:33saves us, what is it? Well, we let Scripture interpret
- 18:36Scripture. We go to John's Gospel, chapter
- 18:396, verse 40. Jesus tells us explicitly what
- 18:42the Father's will is. He says For this is the will of
- 18:45my Father, that everyone who looks on the sun and believes in
- 18:48him should have eternal life. So the first and primary act of
- 18:52obedience is faith. Yes, the very first thing God
- 18:55commands you to do is to stop trusting in yourself, to stop
- 18:58trying to earn your way, and to look to His Son and believe you
- 19:02cannot be doing the will of the Father if you are rejecting the
- 19:05Son He sent. And after that initial act of
- 19:08faith. Then comes a lifetime of faith,
- 19:10sanctification. It is a life that is
- 19:12directionally bent toward God. It is not perfectionism.
- 19:15We still stumble. We still sin, but the direction
- 19:18of our life has changed. It's about the trajectory and
- 19:20not a perfect record. It is a child might trip and
- 19:23fall while walking toward his father, but he is still walking
- 19:26toward him. The desire is there, that new
- 19:29desire to please God, to keep His commandments out of love.
- 19:32That is the mark of the true brother or sister.
- 19:35This brings up a kind of spiritual logic, doesn't it?
- 19:38A pattern involving the Law and the Gospel.
- 19:40It does. Think about the law first.
- 19:43The law says do this and live. If we look at Jesus's standard
- 19:47here, whoever does the will of my Father, and we are honest
- 19:50with ourselves, what do we conclude?
- 19:53We conclude that we fail. I don't do the will of the
- 19:56Father perfectly. My thoughts, my words, my
- 19:58actions, they all fall short. So the law exposes us, right?
- 20:02It shows us we are standing outside on our own merits.
- 20:06We are no better than Mary and the brothers on the street.
- 20:08In fact, we're worse because we sin willfully.
- 20:11But that prepares us for the gospel.
- 20:12That sense of failure drives us to look for a Savior.
- 20:15Because there is one man who actually did the will of the
- 20:18Father perfectly. He is the true Son.
- 20:21He obeyed in the wilderness when Israel failed.
- 20:23He obeyed in Gethsemane, saying not my will but yours be done.
- 20:27He obeyed on the cross. He fulfilled the law perfectly
- 20:29in every respect. And to reunion with Christ that
- 20:32perfect obedience counts for us. That is the glory of it.
- 20:36That's the great exchange. We are adopted in the family not
- 20:39because we performed, but because our elder brother
- 20:41performed for us. His perfect record is credited
- 20:44to our account by faith. So then why do we obey?
- 20:47What is the motive now? It can't be to earn our
- 20:49salvation. No, the motive is gratitude.
- 20:52This is what we call the third use of the law.
- 20:54The law is no longer a ladder we try to climb to God.
- 20:57It's a guide for how to walk with God as His children.
- 21:00We obey because we are loved. We obey because we want to look
- 21:04like our brother. We want to honor our Father.
- 21:06It changes the motivation from fear to love, from slavery to
- 21:10sonship. It's the family language.
- 21:12I want to pivot now to application, because as
- 21:15beautiful as this doctrine is, it is also a hammer.
- 21:19It smashes some idols that we, especially in the modern West,
- 21:22hold very dear. It is absolutely iconoclastic.
- 21:26Jesus is breaking things here and we need to let Him.
- 21:28OK, let's talk about the big one first.
- 21:30The the idol of cultural Christianity or heritage.
- 21:34This is a massive 1. It's the idea that I'm a
- 21:37Christian because my parents were Christians or I was
- 21:40baptized as an infant. I go to church on Christmas and
- 21:43Easter. I'm a decent person, so I'm good
- 21:45with God. It's relying on a religious
- 21:47heritage, not a personal faith. But look at the text.
- 21:51Mary and the brothers had the ultimate heritage.
- 21:54They were physically related to the Savior of the world.
- 21:57And where were they? Standing outside.
- 21:59That is a chilling warning for every single one of us.
- 22:02It means you can be close to the things of God.
- 22:04You can be in the church building every week.
- 22:06You can know the liturgy, sing the hymns, even serve on a
- 22:09committee. But if you are not in vital
- 22:12union with Christ, doing the will of the Father through
- 22:14faith, you're outside. There's a great old saying God
- 22:18has no grandchildren. He has no grandchildren, only
- 22:20children. You have to be adopted
- 22:22personally. You cannot ride your parents
- 22:23faith into heaven. Then there's another idol, and
- 22:26this one might step on some toes.
- 22:29The idol of the nuclear family. This is very sensitive in our
- 22:33culture, especially evangelical circles.
- 22:35We love the slogan faith, family, freedom and often if we
- 22:40are honest with ourselves, family is the real God in that
- 22:42Trinity. We arrange our entire lives
- 22:44around the family unit. It's happiness, it's success,
- 22:47it's schedule. We do, and Jesus is saying here
- 22:50that the family is a temporary institution.
- 22:52It is good, it is ordained by God for this age, but it is
- 22:56earthly. It ends at the grave.
- 22:59The Church, his real family, is eternal.
- 23:02So what does that idolatry look like practically?
- 23:04How do we see it lived out? It looks like skipping corporate
- 23:07worship week after week because of your kids travel sports
- 23:10schedule. You are, by your actions,
- 23:13teaching your children that a soccer game is more important
- 23:17than the gathering of God's eternal family.
- 23:19You're putting the earthly tribe above the heavenly assembly.
- 23:22That's a great way to put it. Or think about evangelism and
- 23:25conflict. There are people listening right
- 23:26now who will not share the gospel with their unbelieving
- 23:30parents or siblings because they don't want to make Thanksgiving
- 23:32awkward. If you want to keep the peace.
- 23:34They value the peace of the earthly family more than the
- 23:37truth of the heavenly Father. And Jesus is saying your primary
- 23:40allegiance has to shift. So the challenge is, are you
- 23:44willing to disappoint your earthly family in order to obey
- 23:47your Heavenly Father? That is the cost of
- 23:49discipleship, Jesus said in Matthew 10.
- 23:52I came to set a man against his father and a daughter against
- 23:55her mother, not because we seek conflict, but because our
- 23:59allegiance to Christ is absolute and must come first.
- 24:03There's a third idol here, and it connects back to the Roman
- 24:05Catholic view we touched on earlier, the idol of mediation.
- 24:09Yes, the idea that we need to go between that Jesus is too holy
- 24:13or too distant, so I need to go to Mary or the Saints to get
- 24:16access to him. But in this text, Mary is the
- 24:19one asking for access. She's on the outside.
- 24:21Exactly. She is standing outside asking
- 24:23to speak to him. Jesus does not say, oh wait, the
- 24:26Queen of Heaven is here, let me bring her in for a special
- 24:28audience. He treats her as a human being
- 24:31who needs to submit to God's will just like everyone else.
- 24:34So it democratizes access to God.
- 24:36It does. It levels the playing field
- 24:37completely. We do not need a human priest or
- 24:40a St. to mediate for us. We have one mediator, Christ
- 24:42Jesus, and access is open to whoever does the will of God
- 24:46through him. Now we have done the hard work
- 24:49of crushing idols and that can feel harsh, but I want to flip
- 24:54the coin. There is tremendous comfort in
- 24:57this text as well. Oh, there is This is a soft
- 25:00pillow for a weary head, if you hear it correctly.
- 25:02Think about the person listening who is lonely.
- 25:05Maybe they're single and have never been married.
- 25:07Maybe they are divorced or widowed.
- 25:10The church can be a hard place for single people.
- 25:12We are often so family centric in our programming and our
- 25:15language that if you walk in alone you can feel like an
- 25:18outsider. But Jesus looks at the single
- 25:21person, the lonely person, and says what?
- 25:23He points to the church and says here is your family and notice
- 25:27the specifics in the text. He's my brother and sister and
- 25:30mother. It's singular.
- 25:32He meets the specific relational void.
- 25:34He does. If you don't have a mother, you
- 25:36have mothers in the church, godly older women who can mentor
- 25:39you. If you don't have brothers, you
- 25:41have brothers in the Pew next to you.
- 25:42And these aren't fake metaphorical brothers.
- 25:45That's the mental shift we need to make, isn't it?
- 25:47We tend to think our biological family is real and our church
- 25:50family is just a nice metaphor. Jesus reverses it.
- 25:53The biological family is the metaphor.
- 25:56It's a picture of the reality. The church is the reality.
- 25:59The bond you have with another believer, someone you will
- 26:01worship with for 10 trillion years in eternity, is more real
- 26:06and more lasting than the bond of DNA and.
- 26:09What about the person who has been rejected by their family
- 26:11because of their faith? This happens all the time.
- 26:13We have listeners who are converts from Islam or Orthodox
- 26:17Judaism or atheism. Their families have cut them
- 26:20off. That is a deep, deep pain.
- 26:22Jesus is saying, I know. He is saying my own brother
- 26:25thought I was crazy. They tried to seize me.
- 26:28I know what rejection from your own kin feels like.
- 26:31And he promises in Mark 10A hundredfold return.
- 26:34If you have lost a father or mother for the gospel, you gain
- 26:37100 fathers and mothers in the church.
- 26:39There is one more group I want to encourage the struggling
- 26:42believer, the person who looks at that condition, whoever does
- 26:45the will of the Father and feel shaky because they are so aware
- 26:48of their own sin and failure. That's where the doctrine of
- 26:51with Christ holds us fast. Notice that Jesus calls the
- 26:54disciples his brothers, these flawed, failing men.
- 26:59Hebrews 2.11 says he is not ashamed to call us brothers.
- 27:03Think about that for a second. He is not ashamed of you.
- 27:06He knows your sin. He knows your weakness.
- 27:08He knows the thoughts you had on the way to work today.
- 27:11And yet, because you are united to him by faith, he stands
- 27:15before the Father and says he's with me, she's with me, this is
- 27:18my brother, my sister. He's not ashamed of us.
- 27:21He covers our shame with His glory.
- 27:24Our imperfect, stumbling obedience is accepted by the
- 27:26Father because of His perfect, unwavering obedience.
- 27:30You don't get kicked out of the family because you stumble.
- 27:33The blood of the elder brother covers you.
- 27:36So as we wrap this up, how does this change our Sunday
- 27:38experience? We walk into church next week.
- 27:41What is different because of this text?
- 27:43It changes everything. It means we are not just
- 27:45attending an event, we are not just going to a lecture or a
- 27:48concert. We're going to a family reunion.
- 27:50These are your people, your eternal family.
- 27:53And there's a powerful connection here to the
- 27:55sacraments, specifically to the Lord's Supper.
- 27:57The table. We often call it the family
- 28:00meal. That is a deep theological
- 28:02reality. When we eat the bread and drink
- 28:04the cup, we are affirming who the family is.
- 28:06We are partaking of the new covenant that makes us family.
- 28:09But there is a serious warning there too.
- 28:11Yes, do not eat if you are standing outside, if you are
- 28:15unrepentant, if you are harboring hate for your brother
- 28:18or sister in Christ, if you are secretly relying on your own
- 28:21works. You are functionally outside to
- 28:25eat then is dangerous. It's eating and drinking
- 28:28judgement on yourself. But the.
- 28:29Invitation is wide. The invitation is for the
- 28:32family. It is come.
- 28:34If you are hungry for righteousness, if you are weak
- 28:37and need strength, if you are resting in Christ alone for your
- 28:40salvation, come to the table. This is where the family gathers
- 28:43and is nourished by the head of the household.
- 28:45It really reorients our whole view of the church.
- 28:47It is not a club you join, it's a body you're part of.
- 28:50It is the household of God, and we are His children.
- 28:53So here is the final provocation for you, the listener.
- 28:58We've walked through the context, the Greek, the history,
- 29:01the theology, but it all comes down to a simple position, a
- 29:05simple question. Where are you standing right
- 29:08now? Are you standing outside
- 29:10assuming you were in Pitargando because of your background, your
- 29:14family, or your church attendance?
- 29:16Or have you entered the house by faith?
- 29:19Are you merely associated with Jesus hanging around the
- 29:23neighborhood, so to speak, or are you in union with Him?
- 29:26The door is not locked by your genetics.
- 29:29It's not locked by your past sins.
- 29:31It is open by the sun, but you must enter through the door of
- 29:34faith and repentance. That is the question that
- 29:36matters most. It is the only question that
- 29:38matters in the end. Are you in the family?
- 29:40Thank you for joining us on Reformed Thinking.
- 29:42We hope this deep dive has challenged you and in the end,
- 29:45comforted you with the truth of the Gospel.
- 29:47Go and do the will of the Father by His grace.
- 29:49We will see you next time.
