- 0:07Yet all right, we've got our figured now we're doing it old school away.
- 0:11We've got our good friend Andrew Larson from Larsenol Services on with us.
- 0:14Andrew, how you doing this morning? Technical difficulties that's my middle name.
- 0:21As a matter of fact, that's part of why I like, part of
- 0:25why I love talking with you is you get it right, and you get
- 0:28you get it, you get it all worked out. And that's one of
- 0:31the things too, with your home, for example, this time of year,
- 0:33getting those things worked out, those technical difficulties at home, kind of
- 0:37taking care of them. And I was asking, I don't know if you
- 0:39caught that part was asking about the difference between cellulose and and fiberglass installation.
- 0:45There is insulation, There is a difference. There isn't there, Andrew,
- 0:49There's a big difference there. And no, I did not catch that.
- 0:51It was the airwave silence on my end, but yes, there's a big
- 0:57difference. I mean, obviously they're made of two different, completely different products.
- 1:00Fiberglass is what it sounds like it is fibers of glass. Cellulose is
- 1:06actually recycled newspapers, So I mean instead of newspapers and certain types of paper
- 1:11and cardboard going into landfills. They take them, they run them through a
- 1:15process, they shred them up, and they turn them into cellulose. And
- 1:19one of the coolest things about it is they're actually especially the installation that we
- 1:23sell truesoft cellulose, you can only get that from us. Some celluloses when
- 1:30they're mixed up, they're actually sprinkled with a powder fire retardant. Our cellulos
- 1:37is actually bathed in it, so it's actually soaked and or sprayed with a
- 1:42fire retardant, So I mean you can't burn it. In fact, actually
- 1:49cool story. We did some training proof by eight nine years ago at one
- 1:53of my employees home and he had an electrical fire started in his attic,
- 1:57and they said that if he didn't have that new when we had just put
- 2:02we just air sieled insulated, and if he didn't have that true soft cellulose
- 2:06in there, it probably would have burned his whole house down. But it
- 2:09was contained to an area because it couldn't burn through through through the cellulose insulation,
- 2:16which a lot of people don't know. Uh. Also, that same
- 2:22fire retardant is a rodent deterrent. Well, we got some really cool videos,
- 2:29honestly, of cellulose and all of the mouse tunnels and feces. They
- 2:36love it. You wouldn't think so, right, it's usually itchy, but
- 2:39they most rodents they love it. It's nice, it's warm, They dig
- 2:44holes, they make mesks. Needless to say, when we remove insulation,
- 2:49we probably accidentally suck a lot of rodents out of the attict. But yeah,
- 2:53so they they get this, they get this this chemical on their body,
- 2:59and they actually they clean themselves and they don't like it. They go
- 3:04away forever. They take a forever nap. As I like to say.
- 3:08With that, as we talk about these benefits to Andrew, one of the
- 3:14really cool things is that the big one is energy efficiency, and there's a
- 3:17reason why you use it at large SNOME services. Correct, The our value
- 3:22on cellulose insulation is it's just better than fiberglass. We have to put less
- 3:27of it in there to get the same amount of our value, which really
- 3:30comes in huge as far as some costs. We just need to use less
- 3:36of it. But when we get you to that R sixty in the summer,
- 3:39when that attic turns into a radiant oven for the rooms above it,
- 3:44we're actually doing some experimentation and just trying to catch some data. A lot
- 3:49of people like it cool when they sleep, right, I know it's odd
- 3:52to talk about this and when it's getting to be winter, but they like
- 3:54it cool when they sleep. And what we found out was in most people's
- 3:58homes, the average distance between their bed where they're laying and their head was
- 4:03about five feet when they're on their bed. So now in the summer,
- 4:09when it's really hot out and that addict stuff over one hundred degrees and you're
- 4:14laying in bed and you're trying to cool your home down, and it doesn't
- 4:15seem to work if you're insulate. If you're under insulated, now you've got
- 4:19a radiant of five feet from your face and we're expecting that to cool the
- 4:25home down. So it doesn't work right now in the winter, obviously,
- 4:29yes, we want that insulation, but most importantly we need that air ceiling
- 4:33to slow down that just to slow down the stack effects in your home.
- 4:39That hot air gets feeded up, it goes through the attic. Now,
- 4:42there's a lot of companies out there they will they will insulate. We like
- 4:46to call them blow and go companies because as a consumer or a homeowner if
- 4:50you google what you need to do, or we need to put more insulation
- 4:54in really not knowing that's not going to help you in the winter, just
- 5:00it doesn't. It doesn't do anything for draftiness, It doesn't do really much
- 5:02of anything to keep the heat in your home at all. So a lot
- 5:09of companies will come out charge you fifteen hundred two thousand dollars blow a bunch
- 5:12more insulation in the attic, and the only thing it did was put a
- 5:15couple bucks in their pocket. It's not going to fix your home. It's
- 5:17not going to make less drafty, it's not going to slow down stack effect,
- 5:21it's not going to do any of that. It will help you in
- 5:24the summer. It will help in the summer, but we need to take
- 5:27care of the air ceiling also. Lots of companies that will do that too.
- 5:30You know, when I talk about roofing, I always talk about we
- 5:32got to tear it down to a clear deck. We need a clean surface
- 5:38to work from so we can do the important things properly. We can do
- 5:41the leak barriers properly, we can do the underlayment flashings, all of that
- 5:44properly. Well, when we do insulation. It's hard to make people visualize
- 5:48this, but because a lot of people have never been in their attic.
- 5:51But it can be a very dirty, tough environment. And if you imagine,
- 5:58you've got most people have ten to twelve months inces of inches of insulation
- 6:01in their attic. Most people are under insulated. But if you can imagine
- 6:05crawling around in that and then trying to dig through that and find all of
- 6:10the penetrations from plumbing, find all of the penetrations from electrical, find all
- 6:15of the top plates, and a top plate is where an interior wall of
- 6:19your home meets the ceiling. Those are all leak areas. So try to
- 6:26imagine shoveling that all out of the way then moving through it to air steel
- 6:31areas. Well, we can't. It's it's doable, but it's not doable
- 6:39to do a good job air steiling if we don't remove so one thing that
- 6:45we have to do, and it's and we're unwavering on it, is that
- 6:49we have to remove your insulation in order to do a good job. It
- 6:54is impossible to do a good air steel job and your attic, which is
- 6:57the most important part of the entire process. With insulation in there. It
- 7:01needs to be removed. Because here's the deal, Sean. If we have
- 7:05a whole bunch of leaks and a whole bunch of holes up in your attic,
- 7:10and we go up there and we don't remove the insulation, and we
- 7:13do the best job we can, we give it an A plus effort.
- 7:15We move everything out of the way, but we we missed ten percent of
- 7:20it, or ten percent of it doesn't get air fealed properly just because there's
- 7:25so much insulation in the way. Now, what we've done is we've taken
- 7:29this. If we take all of those leak holes and we say it's one
- 7:32big hole and it's the size of a window. Remember I said we did
- 7:38some tests, right, it was like having two windows open all year.
- 7:42Now we take it and we close it down so it's smaller. But what
- 7:46that does with stack effect is it is it creates a lot more a lot
- 7:53more. Now all of the air is trying to go through one area,
- 7:56and it can create moisture problems in that area. It can create mold problems
- 8:00in that area. Bottom line is we need a clean, beautiful surface so
- 8:05we can go around with a fine toothed comb air steal all the penetrations,
- 8:09make sure all the penetrations are air stealed properly, and then cover with a
- 8:13nice new set of insulation. So there are cheaper ways to do it.
- 8:18There's cheaper ways to get away with getting it done, but it's not going
- 8:22to be done right. It's almost impossible. The reason I know this,
- 8:26Sean, is because for a long time we would say, you know what,
- 8:30we'll give it our best effort an air celiure addict without removing the insulation,
- 8:35and half the time we've got to go back and we've got to do
- 8:39some more air ceiling because there's stuff we missed. Because just it's almost impossible.
- 8:45It's almost like, you know, everybody's been in that ballpit as a
- 8:48kid. You know, you jump into the pit. Okay, let's try
- 8:52moving those balls out of the way so we can get at the floor of
- 8:56the ball pit. And then as soon as we move, the balls fall
- 8:58back down while we're trying to do work down that floor. Like that's the
- 9:03visualization that I would try to give people. It's almost impossible. Yes,
- 9:07it's cheaper, but are we actually accomplishing anything. It's the same as some
- 9:11companies that will throw shingles over your old shingles. We got new shingles on
- 9:16our roof, but that we actually fix the problem. Are we actually protecting
- 9:20our home. So they kind of go hand in hand. You need a
- 9:22clean surface in order to start to start right, finish right, and make
- 9:26sure it's all done right. And that's why we've got some great deals going
- 9:31on right now. We're actually giving a large discount just down the removal part
- 9:37of the job because we want to make sure that people get it done properly.
- 9:41Is we only want to do it one way, and that's the right
- 9:43way. It's important time a year to be thinking about that and having that
- 9:48work done. And I know, I love looking on your Facebook and social
- 9:50media seeing those addicts the before, during, and after and just what an
- 9:54amazing even just looking at how much better they look after large Holm service has
- 9:58been out there, and then you think about that phenomenal performance. Like Jimmy
- 10:01Hendricks once said, castles made of sand fall into the sea eventually, although
- 10:05I don't think it was him that said it originally, but he sang about
- 10:07it and it's memorable. And you should remember to call Arsenal Home Services this
