- 0:00Speaker 1: Generation. The children also of Mikhar, the son of Manassah,
- 0:04Speaker 1: were brought up upon Joseph's knees, and Joseph said, unto
- 0:08Speaker 1: his brethren, I die, and God will surely visit you
- 0:12Speaker 1: and bring you out of this land, unto the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying,
- 0:21Speaker 1: God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up
- 0:23Speaker 1: my bones from hence. So Joseph died, being one hundred
- 0:27Speaker 1: and ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he
- 0:30Speaker 1: was put in a coffin in Egypt. Here is Roman I,
- 0:36Speaker 1: the prolonging of Joseph's life. In Egypt. He lived to
- 0:39Speaker 1: be one hundred and ten years old Verse twenty two,
- 0:42Speaker 1: having honored his father. His days were long in the
- 0:44Speaker 1: land which for the present God had given him. And
- 0:47Speaker 1: it was a great mercy to his relations that God
- 0:50Speaker 1: continued him so long, a support and comfort to them.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Roman two, the building up of Joseph's family. He lived
- 0:57Speaker 1: to see his great grandchildren by both his sons Verse
- 1:01Speaker 1: twenty three, and probably he saw his two sons solemnly
- 1:04Speaker 1: owned as heads of distinct tribes equal to any of
- 1:08Speaker 1: his brethren. It contributes much to the comfort of aged
- 1:11Speaker 1: parents if they see their posterity in a flourishing condition,
- 1:14Speaker 1: especially if with it they see peace upon Israel. Some
- 1:19Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty eight, verse six, Roman three, the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Last Will and Testament of Joseph published in the presence
- 1:26Speaker 1: of his brethren. When he saw his death approaching those
- 1:30Speaker 1: that were properly his brethren, perhaps were some of them
- 1:33Speaker 1: dead before him, as several of them were older than he.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But to those of them who yet survived, and to
- 1:39Speaker 1: the sons of those who were gone, who stood up
- 1:41Speaker 1: in their father's stead, he said this one. He comforted
- 1:45Speaker 1: them with the assurance of their return to Canaan in
- 1:47Speaker 1: due time. I die, but God will surely visit you
- 1:51Speaker 1: verse twenty four. To this purport Jacob had spoken to him,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Chapter forty eight, verse twenty one. Thus we must comfort
- 1:58Speaker 1: others with the same comforts with which we ourselves have
- 2:01Speaker 1: been comforted of God, and encourage them to rest on
- 2:04Speaker 1: those promises which have been our support. Joseph was under
- 2:08Speaker 1: God both the protector and the benefactor of his brethren,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and what would become of them now that he was dying.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Why let this be their comfort. God will surely visit you.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Note God's gracious visits will serve to make up the
- 2:22Speaker 1: loss of our best friends. They die, but we may
- 2:25Speaker 1: live and live comfortably if we have the favor and
- 2:28Speaker 1: presence of God with us. He bids them be confident.
- 2:32Speaker 1: God will bring you out of this land, and therefore
- 2:34Speaker 1: sub one, they must not hope to settle there, nor
- 2:38Speaker 1: look upon it as their rest forever. They must set
- 2:40Speaker 1: their hearts upon the Land of Promise and call that
- 2:43Speaker 1: their home. So two, they must not fear sinking and
- 2:46Speaker 1: being ruined there. Probably He foresaw the ill usage they
- 2:50Speaker 1: would meet with there after his death, and therefore gives
- 2:53Speaker 1: them this word of encouragement. God will bring you in
- 2:56Speaker 1: triumph out of this land. At last. Herein he has
- 3:00Speaker 1: and I to the promise Chapter fifteen, Verses thirteen fourteen,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and in God's name assures them of the performance of it. Two.
- 3:09Speaker 1: For a confession of his own faith and a confirmation
- 3:12Speaker 1: of theirs, he charges them to keep him unburied till
- 3:15Speaker 1: that day, that glorious day should come, when they should
- 3:18Speaker 1: be settled in the Land of Promise. Verse twenty five.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He makes them promise with an oath that they will
- 3:24Speaker 1: bury him in Canaan. In Egypt, they buried their great
- 3:27Speaker 1: men very honorably and with abundance of pomp. But Joseph
- 3:31Speaker 1: prefers a significant burial in Canaan, and that deferred too,
- 3:34Speaker 1: almost two hundred years before a magnificent one in Egypt.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Thus Joseph, by faith in the doctrine of the resurrection
- 3:42Speaker 1: and the promise of Canaan, gave commandment concerning his bones.
- 3:46Speaker 1: He Brews chapter eleven, verse twenty two. He dies in Egypt,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but lays his bones at stake that God will surely
- 3:53Speaker 1: visit Israel and bring them to Canaan. Roman four. The
- 3:58Speaker 1: death of Joseph and the resurrection of the body for
- 4:00Speaker 1: a burial in Canaan, Verse twenty six. He was put
- 4:04Speaker 1: in a coffin in Egypt, but not buried till his
- 4:06Speaker 1: children had received their inheritance in Canaan. Joshua Chapter twenty four,
- 4:11Speaker 1: verse thirty two. Note one, If the separate soul at
- 4:15Speaker 1: death do but return to its rest with God, the
- 4:18Speaker 1: matter is not great, though the deserted body find not
- 4:21Speaker 1: at all or not quickly is rest in the grave. Two.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yet care ought to be taken of the dead bodies
- 4:28Speaker 1: of the saints in the belief of their resurrection. For
- 4:31Speaker 1: there is a covenant with the dust which shall be remembered.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And a commandment is given concerning the bones. End of
- 4:39Speaker 1: Chapter fifty and end of commentary on the Book of
- 4:42Speaker 1: Genesis by Matthew Henry
