- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie. And Samantha. And welcome to Stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: I Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio. And today,
- 0:19Speaker 1: we are bringing back a classic activist around the world.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yes, and there was a couple of reasons we brought
- 0:26Speaker 2: this one back. A, we are in Hispanic Heritage Month.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And we haven't talked about her in a long time.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So this is one of our first, I think, one
- 0:34Speaker 2: of our beginnings of activists around the world, because I
- 0:37Speaker 2: was trying to do all the different episode names, titles.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But yes, it's Melissa Cristina Marquez. And she is the
- 0:45Speaker 2: mother of sharks, essentially. We had talked about her because
- 0:49Speaker 2: of her works in marine biology, as well as like, oh,
- 0:53Speaker 2: I don't know, we talked about a crocodile bite in
- 0:54Speaker 2: there too. So you should definitely listen to this. But
- 0:56Speaker 2: of course, you know, we'd love to give some updates.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And yes, she actually released her children's book, which we
- 1:01Speaker 2: do mention. It was in 2023 called Mother of Shards.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Really cute.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And it turns out she's got a new one coming
- 1:08Speaker 2: out in 2027 titled The Coral Keeper. And I love
- 1:12Speaker 2: this because it's also talking about environmental responsibility and trying
- 1:15Speaker 2: to save the coral reef.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So we love that. But she has.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Been on a roll in speaking and being in front
- 1:23Speaker 2: as well as writing. She's done a lot of articles.
- 1:26Speaker 2: specifically about marine life with Forbes and other amazing publications,
- 1:31Speaker 2: talking about discoveries of new deep-sea ghost sharks, which I'm
- 1:35Speaker 2: now afraid of, and so much more. So, yes, please
- 1:39Speaker 2: enjoy this classic and go check out her articles.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie. And Samantha. Welcome to Stuff I've
- 1:50Speaker 1: Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio. And welcome to
- 2:02Speaker 1: another sub, sub, sub, sub segment. Fictional women around the world.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I'm excited about this one, but I have to admit,
- 2:11Speaker 1: this one's kind of selfish. Because I really wanted to
- 2:14Speaker 1: talk about Resident Evil. We're still in our horror month times,
- 2:19Speaker 1: even though we talk about horror all the time. And
- 2:22Speaker 1: I just, I was thinking about Resident Evil. I really
- 2:26Speaker 1: haven't talked about it that much, except in our Women
- 2:28Speaker 1: in Survival Horror Video Games episode. I thought, you know what?
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's time.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It's time. Have you ever seen it? I know you
- 2:35Speaker 1: haven't played the games, but have you ever seen any
- 2:37Speaker 1: of the movies? No. Okay. Just a plain no.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Is this the Mila?
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yes. Okay. That part I know. Okay. That's the end.
- 2:47Speaker 1: That's fine. They're not very good. No one would disagree
- 2:51Speaker 1: with you. Okay. Good to know. They're kind of like
- 2:55Speaker 1: one of the, you know, the... The long-held belief that
- 2:59Speaker 1: there's never been a good video game adaption until recently,
- 3:04Speaker 1: these were a big part of that reason. There are
- 3:07Speaker 1: a lot of them, though, and they are successful whether
- 3:10Speaker 1: they're good or not. So I have a long history
- 3:14Speaker 1: with Resident Evil. I played the first game when I
- 3:17Speaker 1: was nine or so, very young. And I snuck into
- 3:21Speaker 1: the first Resident Evil movie literally through the back door
- 3:24Speaker 1: and with me and my friends because it was rated
- 3:27Speaker 1: R and we weren't old enough. I have played these
- 3:30Speaker 1: games and seen these movies for a decade plus. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: have been in it. And the games are a phenomenon.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The first one came out in 1996. It was hard
- 3:41Speaker 1: as hell. The angle switches were unnerving and it kind
- 3:47Speaker 1: of set the tone for a long time for how
- 3:50Speaker 1: horror games were because it was so... the way the
- 3:55Speaker 1: camera worked was very scary. You couldn't look ahead. It
- 3:59Speaker 1: wasn't in your control. And not only were they credited
- 4:05Speaker 1: with repopularizing the zombie genre, they, with Resident Evil 4,
- 4:10Speaker 1: which is a really good game that I have talked
- 4:12Speaker 1: about before, when that came out in 2005, it made
- 4:16Speaker 1: the over-the-shoulder shooter-style action game pretty standard. So Some people
- 4:22Speaker 1: were like, this is an Resident Evil game, this is
- 4:23Speaker 1: an action game, but people love that game anyway. These
- 4:27Speaker 1: games try all kinds of things, some that work and
- 4:30Speaker 1: some that do not. This franchise is usually reported as
- 4:34Speaker 1: the best-selling horror game franchise ever. The first film came
- 4:39Speaker 1: out in 2002, so yes, I was very young and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I really should not have been there. But while it
- 4:45Speaker 1: is loosely based on the first and second game... The
- 4:49Speaker 1: writers specifically didn't follow the plot of any game because
- 4:53Speaker 1: they thought it would be scarier if none of us
- 4:55Speaker 1: knew what was going to happen. I would say your
- 4:59Speaker 1: mileage may vary on that. I disagree. I was like,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I don't know. So if you don't know the very
- 5:06Speaker 1: basic plot of Resident Evil, it essentially boils down to
- 5:10Speaker 1: an amoral slash probably very evil corporation, the Umbrella Corporation,
- 5:15Speaker 1: running secret experiments resulting in what is called the T-Virus outbreak.
- 5:18Speaker 1: that led to the creation of zombies of all types.
- 5:22Speaker 1: There's a lot of corporate espionage, very strange, very strange
- 5:26Speaker 1: individuals in power, but also tales of people trying to
- 5:30Speaker 1: cure cancer or what have you. It's at the intersection
- 5:33Speaker 1: of bioweapons and potential cure. I believe that the Japanese
- 5:37Speaker 1: game is called Biohazard. And when it comes out, when
- 5:43Speaker 1: it turns out it's zombies that happened... out of this
- 5:46Speaker 1: whole thing Umbrella Corp tries to cover the whole thing
- 5:50Speaker 1: up so that's how the movie kind of starts is
- 5:54Speaker 1: you realize something's very wrong here and it gets out
- 5:58Speaker 1: and you don't know what's going on with Mila Jovovich's
- 6:01Speaker 1: character Alice who's definitely not in the games at all
- 6:07Speaker 1: neither is the fictional character of today Rain Ocampo played
- 6:11Speaker 1: by Michelle Rodriguez she does not exist in the game
- 6:15Speaker 1: In the movie, the main character, yes, Alice, can't remember
- 6:18Speaker 1: anything that happened. But we, as the audience, know she's
- 6:21Speaker 1: involved because she was in that opening scene where they
- 6:24Speaker 1: were talking about the T-virus. But the T-virus gets out
- 6:29Speaker 1: and you've got the Raccoon City RPD, which is where
- 6:33Speaker 1: the early games largely take place. Raccoon City, that's where
- 6:36Speaker 1: Umbrella is headquartered. Coerce slash convince Alice to go with
- 6:39Speaker 1: them to investigate Umbrella's main building and see what's going
- 6:43Speaker 1: on here, what has gone wrong. Turns out the building
- 6:46Speaker 1: is infected with zombies and guarded by an AI called
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Red Queen. And she's a little girl, a creepy
- 6:52Speaker 1: little girl. You know, you've got to have one. Rain
- 6:55Speaker 1: was a part of Umbrella's special forces who was in
- 6:58Speaker 1: on this mission. She was very skilled in combat and
- 7:02Speaker 1: marksmanship while she was close to some of her team,
- 7:05Speaker 1: JD especially, who perished. He perished in front of her
- 7:09Speaker 1: as she tries to help him. She blamed team member
- 7:13Speaker 1: Chad Kaplan for the deaths of their team, and she
- 7:16Speaker 1: said it was his lack of experience. And why was
- 7:19Speaker 1: he even here? This is ruining everything. After their first
- 7:22Speaker 1: encounter with the undead, who Rain thought she thought it
- 7:25Speaker 1: was a survivor and tried to help at first, Rain
- 7:28Speaker 1: was the one who got the headshot saying, quote, she's
- 7:31Speaker 1: not standing now. Of course, the undead rose again and
- 7:46Speaker 1: bit Rain for the second time. More of the undead
- 7:50Speaker 1: attacked her and her team, and she was bitten several times.
- 7:53Speaker 1: The Red Queen informs all the survivors what this means,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and Rain realizes she'll die. But she's like, I'm going
- 8:00Speaker 1: to keep fighting for this team until it's the end.
- 8:05Speaker 1: When the surviving members of the team are on the
- 8:07Speaker 1: verge of escaping, the Red Queen demands that Alice kill
- 8:10Speaker 1: Rain first. to contain the infection because while they're close
- 8:14Speaker 1: to retrieving the antivirus, Rain's infection has gone on too
- 8:18Speaker 1: long to be cured. Alice refuses and destroys the screens
- 8:22Speaker 1: the Red Queen was using to communicate with them. Eventually,
- 8:25Speaker 1: they get to the antivirus and Alice gives it to Rain,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but not before Rain makes Alice promise to kill her
- 8:30Speaker 1: if she turns. And for a moment, there's kind of
- 8:33Speaker 1: a funny moment where Alice is like, oh, here it is.
- 8:36Speaker 1: She's not responding. I have to kill her. And then
- 8:39Speaker 1: Rain is like, It's still eyes closed. I'm not dead yet.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But then it turns out she has, in fact, died.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And she does turn into a zombie. Oh, no. Yes, yes.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And all of this stuff happens at the same time.
- 8:58Speaker 1: So you've got a licker that attacks. And a licker
- 9:01Speaker 1: is basically these really deadly zombies with huge tongues that
- 9:05Speaker 1: they use to kill you. Very scary. Don't mess with them.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And yeah, Rain, then you got Rain who's like, hey,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I'm a zombie now. One of the survivors shoots her
- 9:16Speaker 1: in the head with her own gun and her body
- 9:18Speaker 1: falls onto the button to open the doors that then
- 9:22Speaker 1: allows the rest of them and the liquor to escape.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Alice is very, very depressed about Rain's death. She really
- 9:31Speaker 1: wanted to save her and they were kind of begrudging buddies. Yeah.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The Umbrella Corporation later cloned Rain as part of tests
- 9:40Speaker 1: that they were running about how the virus would spread
- 9:44Speaker 1: depending on the conditions in order to sell it to
- 9:46Speaker 1: whoever was willing to pay the most. The clones had
- 9:49Speaker 1: no memories of Rain's life, and there were two main
- 9:53Speaker 1: clone Rains, the good one and the bad one, obviously.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The good one... one was all about gun control and
- 10:02Speaker 1: learning and the bad one was very very very blunt
- 10:07Speaker 1: and worked as part of umbrella security good rain was
- 10:10Speaker 1: killed by a liquor and bad rain purposefully infected herself
- 10:14Speaker 1: with the parasite to make herself invulnerable but then was
- 10:18Speaker 1: eaten by the undead as it happens uh this character
- 10:23Speaker 1: was the tough skilled no-nonsense one outwardly closed off but
- 10:28Speaker 1: loyal she liked to fight she was ready to fight
- 10:31Speaker 1: uh while she was hard to impress and often arrogant
- 10:34Speaker 1: and violent she changed her mind about people if they
- 10:37Speaker 1: inspired her too and despite working for umbrella when she
- 10:40Speaker 1: found out what they were capable of she was horrified
- 10:43Speaker 1: and she stuck out with me i haven't seen this
- 10:45Speaker 1: movie in forever i remember it very well though i
- 10:48Speaker 1: don't know why but I remember her character very well. And,
- 10:53Speaker 1: you know, maybe one day I'll come back and do
- 10:55Speaker 1: just women in Resident Evil, because there's a lot of
- 10:59Speaker 1: good ones, but there's also a lot of, like, I
- 11:01Speaker 1: know I talked about Jill Valentine. I mean, even Alice
- 11:05Speaker 1: in this movie, like, the sexualized costumes they're wearing in
- 11:08Speaker 1: a zombie apocalypse. Like, I mean, I guess I can
- 11:12Speaker 1: give Alice a pass. Jill Valentine was kind of a cop, though.
- 11:16Speaker 2: But....
- 11:19Speaker 1: I don't know. But you get introduced to Jill Valentine
- 11:21Speaker 1: in the next movie. And that's when you meet Nemesis.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And Nemesis is one of the scariest villains of all time,
- 11:28Speaker 1: in my opinion. Not necessarily in the movie. But in
- 11:31Speaker 1: the game, very scary. If you hear his theme music
- 11:35Speaker 1: on and you know he's around, I would just leave.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I would just go back out the door I just
- 11:39Speaker 1: came in. Yes, yes. Well, thank you for letting me.
- 11:47Speaker 1: This was fun to revisit. I haven't thought about Resident
- 11:49Speaker 1: Evil in a while.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Are you going to watch it again now?
- 11:53Speaker 1: It might be on my Halloween list because I haven't
- 11:57Speaker 1: seen it in a while and I'm pretty sure it's streaming,
- 12:00Speaker 1: so I would love to re-watch it. It's not very good.
- 12:03Speaker 1: If anybody's listening to this, I'm just going to tell
- 12:05Speaker 1: you it's fun, but don't expect more than fun. You
- 12:09Speaker 1: don't think it's going to be a life-changing movie? No.
- 12:13Speaker 1: None of them are. Back when I was in college,
- 12:17Speaker 1: they used to have this student deal, you know, and
- 12:19Speaker 1: you could go see a movie for $ 2. So I
- 12:20Speaker 1: saw a lot of movies that I never would have
- 12:23Speaker 1: seen if it cost any more than that. So I
- 12:25Speaker 1: saw a lot of the Resident Evil movies because of
- 12:27Speaker 1: that price. Amazing. And there's a lot of bad 3D
- 12:30Speaker 1: also happens, I will say. Of course. Of course. And
- 12:34Speaker 1: a lot of cloning. A lot of cloning. But anyway, yes, listeners,
- 12:39Speaker 1: I would love to hear from you if you have
- 12:41Speaker 1: any thoughts about this, any suggestions for characters we should
- 12:46Speaker 1: tackle in this franchise. Please let us know. You can
