Latest / The Craig Way Show / Matthew Golden on THAT 4th-down catch and preparing for Ohio State

- 0:00Speaker 1: There.
- 0:00Speaker 2: All right, let's hear first of all, some comments we
- 0:03Speaker 2: didn't get a chance to get to with regard to
- 0:05Speaker 2: this matchup from Logarts head coach Steve Sarkashan. First of all,
- 0:11Speaker 2: you know, sark says he wants his team to be
- 0:14Speaker 2: better on first downs.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's been wanting that for some time.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Arizona State did a good job of limiting Texas on
- 0:20Speaker 2: first downs. So was there anything specific the Sun Devils
- 0:23Speaker 2: did that, say, Ohio State can take note of been
- 0:26Speaker 2: noting the difficulties Texas had on first downs.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Well, I thought they were very active. I thought they
- 0:31Speaker 3: did a good job of running their defense. I didn't
- 0:35Speaker 3: think it was so much of that there was something
- 0:37Speaker 3: new or different, but they executed. I thought they won
- 0:41Speaker 3: some of their one on ones, which we got to
- 0:43Speaker 3: improve upon that. You know, you know, at the end
- 0:47Speaker 3: of the day, you know, first and second down wins
- 0:49Speaker 3: are really important for us to try to minimize some
- 0:52Speaker 3: of the third and long situations that you can get
- 0:54Speaker 3: yourself into.
- 0:57Speaker 1: But you know that that's when we're at our best.
- 0:59Speaker 3: And so for them, I just thought it was they
- 1:01Speaker 3: executed that what they do on defense, and they did
- 1:03Speaker 3: it better than we did.
- 1:06Speaker 1: For a lot of that ballgame.
- 1:07Speaker 2: One thing the long Words did do on defense was
- 1:10Speaker 2: to answer the bell when they absolutely had to to
- 1:12Speaker 2: get the stop the interception by Macouba. But they also
- 1:15Speaker 2: had those big fourth down stops where they twice stopped
- 1:18Speaker 2: Cam Scattaboo near the goal line and another time stopped
- 1:22Speaker 2: Arizona State from getting into the end zone. And you know,
- 1:26Speaker 2: all of that was really really important. So Sark was
- 1:29Speaker 2: asked about his defense continuing to answer the bell in
- 1:32Speaker 2: the big moments.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Well, I think our defense has been tremendous all year.
- 1:37Speaker 3: That was a hard game the other night. You know,
- 1:38Speaker 3: they played over one hundred snaps and it was an
- 1:42Speaker 3: odd game. You know, you think about we really lost
- 1:45Speaker 3: almost three full possessions on offense. Anytime you have a
- 1:49Speaker 3: scoring return on special teams where we had a punt
- 1:53Speaker 3: return for a touchdown that would have been an offensive
- 1:55Speaker 3: possession that we lost our first drive on offense, we
- 1:58Speaker 3: scored in two plays, and then we have the safety
- 2:02Speaker 3: in one play, and so we really lost three possessions
- 2:05Speaker 3: that you know, unintentionally put our defense continually back on
- 2:09Speaker 3: the field. I just thought it originally, man, we weren't
- 2:11Speaker 3: getting off the field. We were doing okay, especially in
- 2:14Speaker 3: the first half of that game, but over time that
- 2:17Speaker 3: can wear on you. And so I thought those guys
- 2:20Speaker 3: showed a lot of grit, a lot of guts in
- 2:22Speaker 3: that game to fight through. You know, we had players
- 2:25Speaker 3: playing one hundred snaps on defense, not including special teams,
- 2:29Speaker 3: Michael taff being one of those. I think he play
- 2:31Speaker 3: one hundred and one snaps on defense. Not to mention
- 2:33Speaker 3: he was on punt, punt return and kickoff return. And
- 2:36Speaker 3: so that's a lot on these guys that again, we've
- 2:39Speaker 3: got to get him healthy and get them back.
- 2:41Speaker 1: As far as you know, football goes.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Hey, we don't play flag football, man, all right, this
- 2:44Speaker 3: isn't seven on seven. This is tackle football. We believe
- 2:47Speaker 3: in playing a physical brand of football. We try to
- 2:49Speaker 3: do it the right way within the rules. You know,
- 2:52Speaker 3: there were there were numerous plays I thought in the
- 2:54Speaker 3: game that I'm sure they were upset about a call.
- 2:57Speaker 1: There was numerous plays I didn't agree.
- 2:59Speaker 3: With the call. And so but that's football, that's the
- 3:01Speaker 3: way it goes. But we're not going to change the
- 3:03Speaker 3: way we play. We play a physical brand of football.
- 3:06Speaker 3: We're always going to try to impose our will on
- 3:08Speaker 3: our opponents, and Michael's a great example that he plays
- 3:11Speaker 3: the game the right way.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I was talking about Michael taff there and the
- 3:16Speaker 2: hard physical hit that he placed there. All right, we'll
- 3:20Speaker 2: hear more from Sark coming. You know, the real dichotomy
- 3:22Speaker 2: about that then when he talked about losing some possessions,
- 3:26Speaker 2: but they got fourteen points out of two of those,
- 3:28Speaker 2: but down the safety they gave up to But you
- 3:31Speaker 2: know the touchdown drive, the first drive of you Wills,
- 3:35Speaker 2: who plays seventy seven yards, they did it in forty
- 3:37Speaker 2: one seconds. The second was a pump return, So yes,
- 3:40Speaker 2: they didn't have possessions, but they got points. But his
- 3:43Speaker 2: point is well made that your defense barely has time
- 3:46Speaker 2: to catch its breath and it's pushed back out onto
- 3:48Speaker 2: the field to try to answer the call. So that's
- 3:51Speaker 2: kind of the pick your poison kind of thing. All right,
- 3:54Speaker 2: let's go to the guy who was so important long
- 3:57Speaker 2: He had a big catch on that first drive, and
- 3:59Speaker 2: then of course the big fourth and thirteen catch. You
- 4:01Speaker 2: had an other great catch down the boundary, and of
- 4:03Speaker 2: course the two point conversion catch to provide point umber
- 4:07Speaker 2: thirty eight and thirty nine for Texas. Of course, we're
- 4:09Speaker 2: talking about Matthew Golden.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Hey, Matthew, whether it's you and Isaiah this year, Ad
- 4:16Speaker 4: and I last year, last couple of years with the
- 4:19Speaker 4: transfer receivers have come in and immediately kind of build
- 4:22Speaker 4: a rapport with Quinn in this offense. I'm kind of wondering,
- 4:25Speaker 4: why do you think that is the Quinn? Is it
- 4:27Speaker 4: the culture? Is it just god given talent and cream
- 4:29Speaker 4: rising to the top. Why do you think that is?
- 4:32Speaker 5: You know, I would just say it's the culture they
- 4:34Speaker 5: have here at the University of Texas, you know, just
- 4:37Speaker 5: the foundation, you know, the coaching staff at that you know,
- 4:40Speaker 5: just coming in and standing down, you know, just asking
- 4:44Speaker 5: questions about like how to level, how to bring your
- 4:47Speaker 5: game to the next level. You know, just been in
- 4:49Speaker 5: this offense, you know it's changed a lot.
- 4:52Speaker 1: You know, it's helped me develop my game to the
- 4:55Speaker 1: next level.
- 4:56Speaker 5: So, you know, I appreciate Coach Jackson and coach Shark
- 4:59Speaker 5: for you know, allowing me to bring my talents here.
- 5:01Speaker 1: You know, they've failed me a lot.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Hey, matt Andrew mccouba said that this year for him
- 5:07Speaker 6: has kind of been like a movie. So I kind
- 5:12Speaker 6: of want to get your take on how you think
- 5:14Speaker 6: this year has been for you, you know, from when you
- 5:18Speaker 6: first got here to where you are now and how
- 5:22Speaker 6: it's fit with your expectations.
- 5:24Speaker 5: You know, it's been a blessing to be able to
- 5:25Speaker 5: play for this university, you know, just everything that happened,
- 5:31Speaker 5: you know, just waiting my turn, you know, and you know,
- 5:34Speaker 5: I feel like just me coming here, you know, it
- 5:37Speaker 5: was a no brainer. You know, I didn't want to
- 5:38Speaker 5: go too far from home, so just coming here, and
- 5:40Speaker 5: you know, just being able to play with the guys,
- 5:43Speaker 5: you know, just that adversity we faced throughout the season,
- 5:46Speaker 5: you know, just staying together and staying this one team.
- 5:49Speaker 5: You know, I feel like as a team, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 5: we're right where we need to be. And uh, I
- 5:53Speaker 5: mean I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. And how
- 5:57Speaker 5: how can that fourth and thirteen play catapult this offense?
- 6:04Speaker 5: I mean, I mean like I don't feel like none
- 6:06Speaker 5: of us was ready to go on. So I feel
- 6:08Speaker 5: like the football guy was on our side, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 5: just for that that one't play, you know, uh, just
- 6:13Speaker 5: knowing that, you know, we weren't ready for our season
- 6:15Speaker 5: to end, so just being able to capitalize on that play,
- 6:18Speaker 5: you know, keep the season going.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You know, it's it's it's a blessing. And man, just
- 6:23Speaker 1: does the fourth and thirteen play have a name? I
- 6:26Speaker 1: know we ain't. I ain't came up with a name yet.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So was it just a straight adjustment at the line? Uh?
- 6:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, Quinn checked the protection you know, uh play
- 6:38Speaker 5: that we had called, you know, Uh it was. It
- 6:40Speaker 5: was a cover two beater, you know, the safety safety
- 6:44Speaker 5: played a little bit higher. You know, I stuck the
- 6:46Speaker 5: corner in the old line, gave Quinn good enough time,
- 6:49Speaker 5: you know, just to deliver a perfect ball for me
- 6:51Speaker 5: to come down with and grab. So you know, Congress,
- 6:54Speaker 5: Congress to us on the wing, you know, but I
- 6:56Speaker 5: feel like as as a whole offense, you know, we
- 6:58Speaker 5: still got to go back to the drawing board and
- 7:00Speaker 5: you know, just fix the small details to be more
- 7:02Speaker 5: successful in this game.
- 7:04Speaker 7: Hey man, you wanted to ask about your your move
- 7:08Speaker 7: to go to Texas, Like when you entered the portal,
- 7:09Speaker 7: what was that the thing about Texas that attracted you
- 7:13Speaker 7: that made you want to go there? And what did
- 7:14Speaker 7: you learn about this program in your time here so far?
- 7:18Speaker 5: You know, just knowing that you got to be able
- 7:20Speaker 5: to block plan in this offense. You know, it's just
- 7:22Speaker 5: it's just a balanced offense.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Uh, I've seen exactly your worthy adding our Menchel here
- 7:26Speaker 5: before me.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You know, I've seen what they did with receivers.
- 7:29Speaker 5: So you know, just knowing the history that that that
- 7:31Speaker 5: they did with receivers, you know, it was it was,
- 7:34Speaker 5: it was, it.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Was an arbrainer just to come here, you know.
- 7:36Speaker 5: So me being able to come and play in this offense,
- 7:40Speaker 5: like I said, this helped me develop my game to
- 7:41Speaker 5: the next level. So, uh, just being able to plan
- 7:44Speaker 5: approst the offenses, you know. Uh, it's it'll get you
- 7:48Speaker 5: ready for the next level or whatever you decide you
- 7:50Speaker 5: want to do with your opportunities there.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I'm Matthew Bill Rabinos from the Columbus Dispatch.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Uh, could you just kind of describe the challenge that
- 7:59Speaker 4: you and the other text receivers are gonna face and
- 8:01Speaker 4: go adigains Davis Nivenosen and Denzel Burking and really the
- 8:05Speaker 4: safeties as well.
- 8:06Speaker 5: You know, just knowing that we're gonna we're gonna play
- 8:08Speaker 5: a good defense. You know, we know it's gonna be
- 8:10Speaker 5: a sixty minute battle, so you know, just just just
- 8:14Speaker 5: going out there as one as one team as an offense,
- 8:16Speaker 5: you know, focusing on the small details and just taking
- 8:19Speaker 5: in one player at a time. So just going out
- 8:21Speaker 5: there and executing doing everything we need to do as
- 8:24Speaker 5: an offense, and you know, just letting the risks on
- 8:27Speaker 5: fold itself.
- 8:29Speaker 8: Matthew, I know you're not going up against Jeremiah Smith
- 8:32Speaker 8: on the field, but what do you think of him?
- 8:35Speaker 8: And does his presence motivates you to go out there
- 8:40Speaker 8: and match his performance?
- 8:41Speaker 5: You know, just just him being young and him playing
- 8:44Speaker 5: at the level he's playing at. You know, it's it's
- 8:46Speaker 5: it's a different it's different man. I mean, congrats to him,
- 8:49Speaker 5: you know for having the season that he's having. You know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: I see from Twitter and stuff like that that you know,
- 8:54Speaker 5: he looks like he's a way around the guy. You know,
- 8:56Speaker 5: on and off the field. You know, he carries himself
- 8:58Speaker 5: like a pro. So you know, just being able to
- 9:01Speaker 5: get that match up against against him and the defense
- 9:04Speaker 5: that they bring, you know, Uh, I'm looking forward to
- 9:06Speaker 5: and and I think the rest of our team are too, Matthew.
- 9:10Speaker 4: As a whole, how would you assess how special teams
- 9:13Speaker 4: have gone in Texas kickoff return return? You know, the
- 9:16Speaker 4: kicking game with Bert struggling a little bit. How would
- 9:18Speaker 4: you assess special teams as a whole this season?
- 9:21Speaker 7: Now?
- 9:21Speaker 5: I feel like special teams changes changes games. You know,
- 9:24Speaker 5: it brings a lot of energy, you know, uh, changing
- 9:26Speaker 5: pogestions or anything like that. Just being able to capitalize
- 9:29Speaker 5: on the special team side, you know, uh, it makes
- 9:32Speaker 5: a lot of things easier. So just just knowing, just
- 9:35Speaker 5: knowing that, you know, whenever we get the opportunity uh
- 9:38Speaker 5: to to you know, capitalize on special teams, we got
- 9:40Speaker 5: to take for accountability for it. So I mean with Bert,
- 9:44Speaker 5: you know, uh we we we stay on Burt, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 5: he he Uh, nobody's perfect, so you just just knowing
- 9:51Speaker 5: just being there for him and telling him, you know
- 9:53Speaker 5: it's you're gonna get another opportunity. So just being able
- 9:55Speaker 5: to capitalize ouf that, you know, not not reflect off
- 9:58Speaker 5: the past, So just being for him and then special
- 10:01Speaker 5: team wise, just just going out there and taking taking
- 10:03Speaker 5: accountability for us for you know, any opportunity that we get.
- 10:08Speaker 9: Matthew, aside from the practices and the drills and stuff
- 10:11Speaker 9: going over the game plan, has Coach Jackson and or
- 10:15Speaker 9: Coach Sarkisian sat down with you individually or maybe as
- 10:19Speaker 9: a team and said, Okay, guys, we have two more battles.
- 10:22Speaker 9: It's important to remain calm, rely on your skills, set,
- 10:26Speaker 9: remind rely on your training, but to kind of get
- 10:30Speaker 9: you in a focused sense of maybe you know, mentally
- 10:34Speaker 9: giving you in that spot. Have they sat down with
- 10:36Speaker 9: you guys, talked to you about that.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, they've definitely talked to us about it.
- 10:39Speaker 5: You know, just just looking at the matchup that we're
- 10:41Speaker 5: going against. You know, uh, like I said, we're playing
- 10:45Speaker 5: a good team. You know, two good teams playing against
- 10:47Speaker 5: you against each other. So you know, just knowing now,
- 10:49Speaker 5: like when games come like this, you gotta be locked
- 10:51Speaker 5: in on the small details as a team, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 5: players one unit. So just knowing that we get this
- 10:57Speaker 5: opportunity and you know we're gonna take for the accountability
- 11:00Speaker 5: for it. So I feel like we're right where we
- 11:03Speaker 5: need to be as a team. You know, we're just
- 11:04Speaker 5: gonna stay locked in. That's one.
- 11:07Speaker 1: What's up?
- 11:07Speaker 10: Matt just wanted to go back to your comments about
- 11:10Speaker 10: how his program has helped out your game and improve
- 11:12Speaker 10: your game. Can you just pull behind the curtain a
- 11:15Speaker 10: little bit and let's know what about your game has
- 11:17Speaker 10: improved and also how much is coach Jackson's NFL experience
- 11:20Speaker 10: to play the factor in that.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Yeah, you know he's He's helped me tremendously, you know,
- 11:24Speaker 5: just talking off the field stuff, you know, just reading
- 11:27Speaker 5: defenses and just rock details in general. You know, just
- 11:31Speaker 5: knowing that, you know, in this type of offense, you
- 11:32Speaker 5: got to be able to be in his owns, know
- 11:34Speaker 5: when that plans on, know when they planing. Man, So
- 11:37Speaker 5: just knowing that you got to be you got to
- 11:38Speaker 5: be there at the right time for the quarterback. You know,
- 11:40Speaker 5: you got to be at the right depth whatever whatever
- 11:43Speaker 5: rout it is, you know, whatever concept. You know, you
- 11:45Speaker 5: just got to go out there. You know, you got
- 11:47Speaker 5: to becked in with the small details and do your job.
- 11:49Speaker 5: So I feel like, I mean, coming here and just
- 11:52Speaker 5: having the foundation that we have here, you know, it's
- 11:54Speaker 5: helped me in a in a long way.
- 11:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I was curious if you have any for us.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Tration is a kick returner. I know you got a
- 12:02Speaker 8: couple of her testdowns at Houston and you don't get
- 12:05Speaker 8: to return to many and now that Silas got his, yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 8: ditching to contribute there.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it's definitely making me hungry. You know,
- 12:13Speaker 5: it's it's good to see one of my guys eat.
- 12:15Speaker 5: You know, I'm a competitor, So me and me and
- 12:18Speaker 5: Silace joke off the field, who's gonna get the.
- 12:20Speaker 1: First point return parents turn and kick return.
- 12:22Speaker 5: You know, he got it, So I'm just trying to
- 12:24Speaker 5: match his energy. So, you know, just waiting for my
- 12:26Speaker 5: opportunity to come. And you know, whenever it come, I'm
- 12:28Speaker 5: gonna take. I'm gonna take. I'm gonna take it, man,
- 12:31Speaker 5: and I'm not looking back.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So there's Matthew Goldenie his thoughts on getting ready and
- 12:40Speaker 2: not looking back, getting ready for this cowbo. All right,
- 12:43Speaker 2: up next, we do have inconceivable for a Tuesday afternoon.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I ain't thirteen under the sun.
