- 0:00Speaker 1: Final segment of the Women's Basketball Coaches Show for the season.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Making Caffrey is with us from the Big East Digital Network.
- 0:05Speaker 1: As we'll get in the games. Reminder, eight o'clock tonight,
- 0:08Speaker 1: we've got the men and Marquette at Gamble. That's a
- 0:10Speaker 1: huge game from the three spot, and Mike and Wayne'll
- 0:13Speaker 1: have the pre game tip. According to Wan, will be
- 0:15Speaker 1: somewhere around eight forty tonight right here on the Yukon
- 0:17Speaker 1: Sports Network. All right, Megan, let's get into the games,
- 0:19Speaker 1: because one of the games is a repeat of this
- 0:22Speaker 1: past weekend that you were at Providence. Yeah, in Georgetown.
- 0:25Speaker 1: That will be game number two of the triple header
- 0:28Speaker 1: on Friday, that starts with Saint John's Butler. The winner
- 0:31Speaker 1: gets Yukon on Saturday. Give me your thoughts on what
- 0:33Speaker 1: was a pretty good game over the weekend in DC.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Well, first and foremost, eleven am for that first tip
- 0:40Speaker 2: off on Friday, we get hoops nice and early. You
- 0:43Speaker 2: still have to be finishing off some of your coffee
- 0:45Speaker 2: and if if you're someone which I absolutely love, I'm like,
- 0:48Speaker 2: get me in the gym as early as possible. However,
- 0:51Speaker 2: just kind of highlighting a little bit more so that
- 0:54Speaker 2: the Providence Georgetown game. I'm really exciting, excited for this one.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's gonna be interesting because you said, right, they wrapped
- 1:01Speaker 2: up the regular season against one another this past weekend
- 1:04Speaker 2: sixty six sixty two. Really interesting game. And first and
- 1:08Speaker 2: foremost on the Georgetown side, I mean, Kelsey Ransom Bob
- 1:12Speaker 2: is spectacular, right, She is every bit of fun to watch,
- 1:17Speaker 2: a really talented player. She finished the regular season actually
- 1:21Speaker 2: leading the league in scoring, and it's so it's hard
- 1:24Speaker 2: to put into words just what she's able to do
- 1:27Speaker 2: for this Hoya's team, right, And when you're watching in person,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you're able to see she hangs her hat on defense.
- 1:34Speaker 2: She is so intense on defense, and she really communicates
- 1:38Speaker 2: well with her entire team. You see, right, she is
- 1:40Speaker 2: the leader and you see see it even more so
- 1:44Speaker 2: out on the defensive end end of the court. But
- 1:46Speaker 2: I think for for Providence, it's really gonna be interesting
- 1:50Speaker 2: here because they finished Georgetown and that was kind of
- 1:53Speaker 2: a big.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Win for them.
- 1:54Speaker 2: They had a six game winless streak against Georgetown. That
- 1:59Speaker 2: game that they won, it was their first win over
- 2:01Speaker 2: George down since January twenty third, twenty twenty two.
- 2:05Speaker 3: All Right, I love a good nugget. That was a
- 2:07Speaker 3: nugget that I had to have.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But Providence has had their ups and downs throughout this season.
- 2:11Speaker 2: They've they've had their spell of the injury bug. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: I think what I saw this past weekend was Olivia Olsen,
- 2:19Speaker 2: after going through a little spout of an injury this year,
- 2:21Speaker 2: she looked a lot more herself. She looked more confident
- 2:25Speaker 2: and like she wasn't second guessing anything right, And I
- 2:29Speaker 2: think that that's so important and was such a big
- 2:32Speaker 2: reason as to the why the Friars were able to
- 2:34Speaker 2: come away and the hope what I would believe that
- 2:36Speaker 2: the Friars are hoping is going to pull them into
- 2:39Speaker 2: this tournament. Right, you kind of want to use momentum.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That's what march is more oftentimes than not.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:44Speaker 3: You lean on momentum when you've got it.
- 2:46Speaker 2: And you could just see Olivia wasn't second guessing, was
- 2:50Speaker 2: quicker than she had kind of been in the past.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And she's just such a huge integral role part of
- 2:56Speaker 2: this Friar's team as well that I think really having
- 2:59Speaker 2: her get that mental confidence was something that they had
- 3:03Speaker 2: been missing and is a huge part of their success.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And what's going to lead them into the tournament.
- 3:09Speaker 1: All right, Megan, I am hoping that Sunday evening we
- 3:12Speaker 1: have round three of Creighton's Seaton Hall because and I
- 3:15Speaker 1: know Tony is for that matter, and he really wanted
- 3:17Speaker 1: that number three seed. But here's my question. Does Creighton
- 3:21Speaker 1: finally get to a championship game? I mean, of all
- 3:24Speaker 1: the things that they have done in this stretch with
- 3:26Speaker 1: this group of seniors that includes in a lead eight
- 3:28Speaker 1: apparents in twenty twenty two, they've never been to the final.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Will this be the year?
- 3:33Speaker 3: Bob?
- 3:34Speaker 2: When you say that, let's just have a moment to
- 3:37Speaker 2: just let that sink in, right, how crazy is that
- 3:41Speaker 2: that they haven't had that level of success in the
- 3:44Speaker 2: Big East Tournament specifically.
- 3:46Speaker 3: And you know, when I think about.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It, we cover this league and we're so lucky to
- 3:51Speaker 2: cover this league, which is filled with great people, and
- 3:54Speaker 2: especially getting to know this core unit of senior leadership, right,
- 3:59Speaker 2: some grads in there for the Blue Jays with Creighton,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you really root for people and you want them to
- 4:05Speaker 2: be able to have that success. Similar to think about
- 4:08Speaker 2: all the times we've spoken with Page Beckers right, and
- 4:12Speaker 2: hearing back from Page Beckers right, the Unfinished business, the
- 4:15Speaker 2: why she wanted to come back to have another chance
- 4:18Speaker 2: with Yukon to be able to get to that final level, right,
- 4:23Speaker 2: to be able to win the NCAA tournament for her,
- 4:25Speaker 2: And you just feel like these Creighton seniors have that
- 4:29Speaker 2: same level of unfinished business, right they want to be
- 4:33Speaker 2: able to get to the Big East Tournament title game,
- 4:37Speaker 2: and you just have to hope, right, it's what happens.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Creighton and Seaton Hall have been some of my favorite
- 4:42Speaker 2: matchups within the tournament because they play one another so well.
- 4:46Speaker 2: They do have such different styles of play. You think
- 4:50Speaker 2: of rivalries that have grown, it's usually been we would
- 4:53Speaker 2: always say it in the past, it's Seaton Hall in
- 4:55Speaker 2: Saint John's right because you're right over the river with
- 4:57Speaker 2: one another. But it's become this really great rival with
- 5:00Speaker 2: Seaton Hall and Creighton. I think Tony and Jim have
- 5:04Speaker 2: a tremendous amount of respect for one another, both of
- 5:07Speaker 2: the head coaches, and you have to see I think
- 5:10Speaker 2: that this year's matchup is kind of really great with
- 5:13Speaker 2: both of them of the differences with what they're able
- 5:16Speaker 2: to bring with Creighton bringing back leadership veterans who have
- 5:19Speaker 2: played so much together and then On the other side
- 5:22Speaker 2: of the spectrum, Seaton Hall has had tremendous success with
- 5:25Speaker 2: a team that hasn't had as much playing time together. Right,
- 5:28Speaker 2: you bring in Faith masonis a transfer, You've got data Ads,
- 5:32Speaker 2: a freshman who is shining, and you've got some other
- 5:35Speaker 2: stays within the program.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And they play, they play.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Sometimes you're looking at them and you're like, wow, it
- 5:39Speaker 2: actually looks like you guys have had solid time together.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:43Speaker 2: We're at the end of the season, so obviously things
- 5:45Speaker 2: look a lot better than what they did in the beginning.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So I think it's going to be.
- 5:50Speaker 2: One thing we're guaranteed for Bob is entertainment, feisty play
- 5:55Speaker 2: some true blue Big East basketball, which that game, if
- 6:00Speaker 2: that ends up being the matchup, will be in a
- 6:02Speaker 2: must watch.
- 6:03Speaker 3: You have to watch that entire Game's better be watching.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'll be sitting in section fifteen in the radio deck. Finally,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I know you have seen you kind of bunch over
- 6:13Speaker 1: your time here, but this year a little different. The
- 6:15Speaker 1: Page Beckers effect in the seats. I mean you Kon
- 6:19Speaker 1: has pretty much sold out every home game. I think
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Xavier game in December or early January the only
- 6:24Speaker 1: game they didn't sell out at the Excel Center. You
- 6:26Speaker 1: see on the road. I've heard stories in Chicago or
- 6:29Speaker 1: fans because you know, the hotel in the arena and
- 6:31Speaker 1: right next to each other in trees just to get
- 6:34Speaker 1: pictures with Page. And then they sell out a Hinkle
- 6:37Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. Nothing but young teenage girls
- 6:40Speaker 1: wearing Beckers jerseys all over the place, with the exception
- 6:43Speaker 1: of course Ashland Shad's family, but that's another story. But
- 6:46Speaker 1: the effect, what have you seen the Page Beckers affected
- 6:49Speaker 1: how it's affected the Big East in a great way,
- 6:51Speaker 1: because obviously the numbers are staggering and that people come
- 6:54Speaker 1: out to watch.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yeah, man, you gotta let that sink in.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Huh you say that and you talk about selling out
- 7:00Speaker 2: arenas and I can't.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Help but get some chills a little bit here.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Because I think you think of for some of these
- 7:05Speaker 2: other players within the league, right, it's how special for
- 7:08Speaker 2: them to be able to have an experience throughout their
- 7:11Speaker 2: collegiate career that they're playing in front of a sellout crowd, right,
- 7:15Speaker 2: And they're getting to be able to have that experience,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and even more so, write y zoom out and it's
- 7:19Speaker 2: just women's basketball. Is trending upwards is what it really
- 7:24Speaker 2: really feels, right, and especially because of an athlete like
- 7:28Speaker 2: Page herself. And I think why there's so much impact, Bob,
- 7:31Speaker 2: And we've been lucky enough to have some really great
- 7:35Speaker 2: one on one time with Paige, both you and I myself.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It's all real and it is as true and as
- 7:42Speaker 2: genuine as it comes. And I think that fans see
- 7:45Speaker 2: that right when you're able to get these young girls
- 7:48Speaker 2: who are looking up right, they've got their Becker's jerseys
- 7:51Speaker 2: on there, looking up to her.
- 7:52Speaker 3: They want a picture.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It's not just because of Paige Beckers the basketball player.
- 7:57Speaker 2: It's because Page does everything the right way. She leads herself.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Faith is such a big part of who she is.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And you can tell when you're talking to her she
- 8:07Speaker 2: is so humble. Even sometimes we're you're like, okay, Page,
- 8:10Speaker 2: come on, but she's she and that's just who she is.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It's not a show. And people really feel how genuine
- 8:17Speaker 2: that is. And I'll never forget, you know, it was
- 8:20Speaker 2: it was one of their home games and everyone's running
- 8:23Speaker 2: off the court right and Paige is just signing things,
- 8:25Speaker 2: signing things, and the stat is like Paige, we need
- 8:28Speaker 2: to get you into the locker room, gets you into
- 8:30Speaker 2: the locker room. But she stopped bob at every single
- 8:33Speaker 2: one of those little girls, and she.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Made their days.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And she she, you know, is the woman that they
- 8:41Speaker 2: all look up to. And it's so cool to see
- 8:43Speaker 2: that and to be able to be witnessing it firsthand.
- 8:47Speaker 2: It's great for the sport, it's great for the conference,
- 8:49Speaker 2: it's great for women's basketball, and it's also given flowers
- 8:54Speaker 2: where they're due. It's great for Page that she's able
- 8:57Speaker 2: to be able to relish this where she's doing it right.
- 9:01Speaker 2: She's doing it obviously within her teammates and her program
- 9:05Speaker 2: and everything.
- 9:05Speaker 3: But she is performing so well and she.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Is staying so true to who she is amidst all
- 9:12Speaker 2: the success that she deserves it, and it's cool to
- 9:15Speaker 2: see her. Hopefully so kit in a little bit as well,
- 9:19Speaker 2: because she deserves every bit of every ounce of that.
- 9:21Speaker 2: But it's been really special to see of just you
- 9:24Speaker 2: look around and you're like, we've got a sellout arena.
- 9:28Speaker 3: This is so cool.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure, Megan, appreciate a few minutes. Look
- 9:33Speaker 1: forward to seeing you this weekend and let's hope you
- 9:34Speaker 1: have some great basketball.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I'll talk about. Cannot wait Bob's yet Mohegan.
- 9:39Speaker 1: By the way, congratulations on the Blink.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Thank you very much.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Over the holidays, our girl Megan Engage. Good for her.
- 9:45Speaker 1: That'll wrap it up on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches
- 9:48Speaker 1: Show for tonight. Thanks to Megan. Thanks to Gino for
- 9:50Speaker 1: joining us. Don't forget men tonight, hockey tomorrow. I'll see
- 9:53Speaker 1: you from Burlington seven to fifteen on the radio for
- 9:55Speaker 1: that one. Thanks for tuning in. I'm Bob Joys. Have
- 9:58Speaker 1: a good night everyone,
