- 0:02The great epic of India. The Mahabharata provides various
- 0:06illustrations of concentration in the recounting of the actions
- 0:11of Arjuna, who was the preeminent Archer of the time
- 0:15and whose actions led to Victory.
- 0:18The first example was provided during his youth.
- 0:21As he and his siblings and cousins were being trained by
- 0:25the renowned teacher drona. They were each asked to focus on
- 0:30the eye of a particular bird in a tree, at some distance, with
- 0:34the idea that they should be able to shoot an arrow through
- 0:37that. Extremely tiny Target with the
- 0:40proper concentration. Each in turn was asked what he
- 0:44observed. And they all recounted seeing
- 0:48the sky, the tree, the bird, the bird's eye that is until he got
- 0:54to Arjuna who indicated that. All he saw was a dark spot
- 1:00representing the center point of the actual eye of the bird, he
- 1:04had successfully blocked out all extraneous Focus to concentrate
- 1:10his soul attention on the target.
- 1:13Later in life, he went to a kingdom to participate in the
- 1:17choice of a groom for the prince's property.
- 1:21All of the greatest warriors of the land were in attendance.
- 1:24And the task set before them was to shoot a moving Target above
- 1:29while looking down into a reflecting pool of water through
- 1:33his power of concentration, he was able to succeed where
- 1:38everyone else failed. Concentration represents a power
- 1:43of knowledge and action, Swami Vivekananda, and his lectures on
- 1:48Raja yoga, describe, Tration as providing complete absorption on
- 1:54the target of the concentration. And it brings with it, various
- 1:58powers that as well concentration.
- 2:02Varies from meditation in that, it is a highly focused activity.
- 2:07On a particular Point, whether an external object or an
- 2:12internal state of awareness. While meditation may be a
- 2:17casting of the general status of the awareness into a certain
- 2:21stream or Direction without the kind of focus found.
- 2:26In the state of concentration. SRI aurobindo writes, quote
- 2:32concentration, for our yoga means when the Consciousness is
- 2:37fixed in a particular state, for example, piece or movement, for
- 2:42example, aspiration will coming into contact with the mother,
- 2:48taking the mother's name. Meditation is when the inner
- 2:52mind is looking at things to get the right knowledge and quote
- 2:57Quote, concentration is gathering together of the
- 3:00Consciousness and either centralizing at one point or
- 3:05turning on a single object. For example, the Divine, there
- 3:10can also be a gathered condition throughout the whole being not
- 3:14at a point in meditation. It is not indispensable to
- 3:19gather like this one can simply remain with a quiet mind
- 3:23thinking of one subject or observing.
