Latest / Phil and H Travel - Is It Worth It? Top Travel Destinations Explored! / Skip Dubrovnik? Why Rijeka is Croatia's New Budget King
Transcript
- 0:00OK, I want you to close your eyes for a second.
- 0:03It is the summer of 2026. You've finally managed to carve
- 0:07out two weeks for that dream European getaway you've been
- 0:10banking on for years. You're looking at a map of
- 0:13Croatia. Naturally, your eyes drift S You
- 0:15see Dubrovnik, You see Split, You see those terracotta roofs
- 0:18in that impossible blue water. The classic shot, the one you
- 0:21see all over Instagram. Exactly.
- 0:23But then reality it's you. You check the hotel prices.
- 0:26You check the hostel prices, You check the price of a single
- 0:29espresso. And that is the moment the dream
- 0:31usually starts to, well, crumble, isn't it?
- 0:34Or at least it requires a significant recalibration of
- 0:37your bank account. A cold splash of water because
- 0:40we are now three years into Croatia's adoption of the euro.
- 0:44The honeymoon phase of cheap, undiscovered Adriatic travel
- 0:48isn't just over. It's it's ancient history.
- 0:51It's a distant memory. Oh, it really is.
- 0:53By 2026, the market has fully stabilized and the baseline
- 0:56costs in those southern hubs, Dubrovnik, Split Havar, are
- 1:00effectively mirroring places like Miami or the French
- 1:03Riviera. Seriously.
- 1:04Miami Prices. We are seeing 5 year old coffees
- 1:07becoming the standard, not the exception.
- 1:09We are seeing hostile beds, literally a bunk in a room with
- 1:1311 other strangers going for €60 a night. 60 year wait €60.00 for
- 1:18a bunk bed that is just offensive.
- 1:20For a bunk bed, yeah. To listen to someone snore, it's
- 1:24the new reality of mass tourism in a eurozone hotspot.
- 1:28But, and This is why we're here today, there is a glitch in the
- 1:32matrix. If you let your eyes drift way,
- 1:35way up the coast, past the waterfalls, past the famous
- 1:38islands, you hit the northern crook of the Adriatic.
- 1:42There's a smudge on the map, a city called Rejica.
- 1:44Rejaka. Now, to be totally honest with
- 1:46you, when I hear Rejaka, I don't picture Game of Thrones.
- 1:49I don't picture influencers in linen pants posing on a marble
- 1:52wall. I picture cranes.
- 1:54I picture concrete. And you aren't wrong.
- 1:56I mean for decades most people have treated Rujika as a drive
- 2:00by. It's the place you go to catch a
- 2:01ferry to get to the real vacation, or where you switch
- 2:03buses. Just a transit point.
- 2:05Exactly. Travelers see the oil refinery,
- 2:07they see the container ships, and they just keep moving.
- 2:10It's been the ugly duckling. But here is the contrarian take
- 2:13we are digging into today. If you are trying to do Croatia
- 2:17on a budget in 2026, and I mean a real budget, not a sponsored
- 2:22content budget, Rejeka isn't just an option not be the only
- 2:25option left. It is the last bastion.
- 2:28It's a fascinating economic anomaly, but it raises a
- 2:32massive, unavoidable question for anyone listening Is it
- 2:35actually worth it? Sure, it's cheap.
- 2:37Right, but is it good? Is it ugly?
- 2:39Is it safe? Does it depressing?
- 2:41Does it have any of that Mediterranean magic?
- 2:43Or are we just telling people to vacation in a Rust Belt
- 2:46industrial zone because they're broke?
- 2:48That is exactly the mission of this deep dive.
- 2:50We are going to answer the question, is Rejeka worth it?
- 2:52And we aren't just going to look at the pretty pictures because
- 2:54frankly there aren't as many of them.
- 2:57We are going to analyze the logistics, the brutal math of
- 3:00the 202060 economy and this really weird, ugly, beautiful
- 3:04aesthetic that seems to define the city.
- 3:06And we should probably RIP the bandage off immediately.
- 3:10This isn't your typical travel brochure discussion.
- 3:12We identified 3 massive contrarian surprises in the
- 3:17research that define this city. They're sort of deal Breakers if
- 3:20you don't know them in advance. Let's hit them because if people
- 3:23go in expecting Dubrovnik they are going to be miserable.
- 3:26Surprise #1. It is not a beach town.
- 3:28I cannot stress this enough. OK, say that again.
- 3:30It is not a beach town. If you book a hotel in the
- 3:33center of Rejeka, expecting to walk out the lobby doors, cross
- 3:36the street and dip your toes in the sea, you are going to be
- 3:39staring at a concrete pier, a customs office and probably a
- 3:43Liberian flag oil tanker. Wow, that is a very different
- 3:47vibe, very different surprise #2.
- 3:50The food scene. Everyone assumes the best food
- 3:53is in the capital Zagreb or the tourist hubs.
- 3:56But currently in 2026, Rajeka's food scene is beating Split for
- 4:00diversity and authenticity. It's this incredible, messy
- 4:03intersection of Italy and the Balkans.
- 4:05So it's not just tourist fare. Not at all.
- 4:07It's not just grilled fish for tourists.
- 4:09It's heavy, Hardy, complex food. It's for people who work.
- 4:13And surprise #3 which is the one that really worries me, the
- 4:17weather. Oh yeah, it is the wettest city
- 4:19in the country. Statistically, it rains more in
- 4:22Rejika than it does in London. More than London, that is a
- 4:25damper. Literally, it is.
- 4:28If you didn't pack a waterproof shell, you are going to lose a
- 4:32lot of your budget buying cheap disposable umbrellas that break
- 4:35in 5 minutes. We've all been there.
- 4:37OK, so we have no beach in the center, it rains like London and
- 4:40it's full of cranes. You are doing a terrible job of
- 4:43selling this so far. Why are we calling this the
- 4:45Budget King? Because of the vibe and the
- 4:47price. Well, let's start with the vibe,
- 4:50because I think that's where the ugly, beautiful thing comes into
- 4:52play. You have to understand the
- 4:54context, right? We mentioned the Euro Shock in
- 4:56the South. Dubrovnik is a museum piece.
- 4:59It's manicured, it's perfect, and it's sterile.
- 5:02It feels like a theme park, doesn't it?
- 5:03A very, very expensive theme park.
- 5:05Exactly. You pay your entry fee, you walk
- 5:08the prescribed path, you take the photo.
- 5:10But Rejeka. Rejeka has scars.
- 5:13It has what the sources call structural integrity.
- 5:17Historically, it's known as the Red City.
- 5:19The Red City. Now does that just mean they
- 5:21vote left or is there something deeper there?
- 5:24Is that a political thing? It's much deeper.
- 5:26It goes way back. You have to look at the history
- 5:28of Fumoma, which is the Italian name for the city.
- 5:32It's had this very complicated identity for centuries.
- 5:36In the 1920s, before it was part of Yugoslavia or Croatia, it was
- 5:40briefly an independent Free State.
- 5:42It was this playground for anarchists, futurists and
- 5:45artists, led by this poet soldier Gabriel Riel di Nunzio.
- 5:50It has this history of being a bit punk rock, a bit rebellious.
- 5:53So it's not just red as in communist, it's red as in fiery,
- 5:57as in revolutionary. Precisely.
- 5:59It's historically working class. It's a port city.
- 6:01The people who live there have always been distinct from the
- 6:03rest of the country, a little bit of an outlier.
- 6:06They are proud of being a bit gritty.
- 6:08Even today the political energy is different.
- 6:10It feels lived in. That's the key phrase, isn't it?
- 6:13Lived in. When you look at Rejeka on
- 6:16social media, if you can even find it amidst the sea of
- 6:18Dubrovnik posts, you get these wildly mixed signals.
- 6:22It's a total dichotomy. You're absolutely right.
- 6:24On one hand, you have the court, so that's the main promenade.
- 6:28If you just look at a photo of the court, so you'd think you
- 6:30were in Vienna or Budapest, but with palm trees, you have these
- 6:34grand yellow and cream Austro Hungarian buildings, elaborate
- 6:39facades, polite cafe culture. It looks imperial.
- 6:43It looks expensive. But then you swipe left.
- 6:45And you see an abandoned torpedo factory, you see graffiti, you
- 6:49see rusted iron. It looks like a post apocalyptic
- 6:52video game level. And the crazy thing is, both of
- 6:56those things are existing within a 5 minute walk of each other.
- 6:59They're not in different parts of town.
- 7:01They are neighbors and that is the expectation you need to
- 7:03have. This is a port city first.
- 7:05It smells like diesel and salt. It sounds like ship horns and
- 7:09seagulls, not just gentle waves. It's not a museum piece where
- 7:12everything is manicured for the visitor.
- 7:14In Rebecca, you are outnumbered by locals.
- 7:16And that's a huge deal. That brings up this concept of
- 7:19the living city versus the theme park.
- 7:22I think for a budget traveler this isn't just an aesthetic
- 7:24preference, it actually impacts the wallet.
- 7:27Oh, it impacts the wallet directly.
- 7:29Hugely. Because it is a working city,
- 7:32the infrastructure is built for residents.
- 7:34Think about who lives there. Dockworkers.
- 7:37Students at the university, Nurses, teachers.
- 7:40People earning local Croatian salaries.
- 7:42People earning local Croatian salaries, which even in 2026 are
- 7:47not matching the prices in Dubrovnik, not even close.
- 7:51No way. So the supermarkets have to be
- 7:53priced for them. The bus system has to be
- 7:55efficient and cheap because people need to get to work, not
- 7:58just to a beach. When you visit a theme Park City
- 8:01like Split in July, the infrastructure is pivoted
- 8:04entirely to extract money from tourists.
- 8:07The prices are tourist prices. In Reggie Kai, there is only one
- 8:10price, the local price. There's also this note in the
- 8:13research about the lack of Hawker culture.
- 8:16I found this really interesting because nothing ruins a vacation
- 8:18faster for me than being hassled every 10 feet.
- 8:21It is a massive difference in quality of life.
- 8:23It's almost jarring at first. In the South, you walk down the
- 8:26promenade and it's a gauntlet boat tour, bleak cave, lavender,
- 8:30come in my restaurant. You are a target.
- 8:32You are a walking wallet. You feel like prey.
- 8:34You do in regeca you are invisible.
- 8:37Invisible. That sounds kind of lonely, but
- 8:40also amazing. It's liberating.
- 8:41No one cares that you are there. They're busy getting to work or
- 8:45meeting their friends for coffee.
- 8:47You get to be a voyeur. You get to observe the city
- 8:50rather than being consumed by it.
- 8:52For a traveler who actually wants to see a culture, that
- 8:55invisibility is a luxury. Let's talk about that arrival
- 8:58experience, because I think it sets the tone.
- 9:00If you're coming in by bus, maybe from Trieste in Italy or
- 9:03down from Munich, what do you see?
- 9:05What's the first thing that hits you?
- 9:07You don't see cute little fishing boats bobbing in a
- 9:10turquoise harbor, you see the industry.
- 9:12The source material uses this great phrase metallic giraffes.
- 9:17The cranes. The cranes, they are massive,
- 9:19they are everywhere and they are kind of the mascot of the city.
- 9:22You see the container terminal, it's industrial grit.
- 9:25But then as you get closer, you start to see the industrial
- 9:29chic. It's a unique architectural mix.
- 9:32What do you mean by that? You have those Habsburg era
- 9:35buildings, Heavy, ornate, very 19th century luxury, but they're
- 9:40coated in a layer of industrial dust.
- 9:42There's a fine layer of soot on everything.
- 9:44It's like a Countess who's been working in a coal mine.
- 9:47That is a perfect analogy. And she's wearing tattoos.
- 9:49The graffiti in Regeka is everywhere.
- 9:52And we aren't just talking about gang tags or scribbles, though
- 9:55there is plenty of that. We were talking about murals,
- 9:57political slogans, football club loyalty.
- 10:00It feels alive. It feels like the walls are
- 10:02talking. I want to zoom in on one
- 10:04specific location mentioned in the notes, the Philodramatica.
- 10:08It seems to capture this cosmopolitan, slightly faded
- 10:12glory perfectly. Tell me about this place.
- 10:15The Phyllo Dramatica is an institution.
- 10:17It's right on the court. So you walk in and you're
- 10:19surrounded by velvet chairs, crystal chandeliers, high
- 10:22ceilings. It feels very Viennese, very old
- 10:24world. OK, so it's grand.
- 10:26It is, but the soundscape is what matters.
- 10:28You aren't just hearing English and American accents complaining
- 10:31about the heat. You're hearing a mix.
- 10:33Italian, German. Croatian.
- 10:36A real blend. Why so much Italian?
- 10:38Is that just from tourists? No, not at all.
- 10:40Historically, many older locals still speak a dialect explicitly
- 10:44linked to Venice. Plus Trieste is an hour away.
- 10:49It feels international in a way that isn't just touristic.
- 10:51It's a place where you sit, order a macchiato, and just
- 10:54listen. You feel like you're at a
- 10:56crossroads of Europe, not a resort.
- 10:59But we have to be real about the grit.
- 11:01It's not all romance and velvet chairs.
- 11:04The source mentions walking past the train station at night.
- 11:06Yeah, and it's important to manage expectations.
- 11:08Rejeka is safe. We'll get to the safety stats
- 11:11later. But physically, it can look
- 11:13rough. The area around the bus and
- 11:15train stations is dark. The buildings there haven't been
- 11:18power washed in 50 years. Isn't that dangerous?
- 11:21Just grimy. Exactly.
- 11:23If you are used to the polished limestone of Havar, where
- 11:26everything gleams under the streetlights, Rejeka can feel
- 11:29dirty. It's patina, Yeah.
- 11:30Or just dirt. It's a bit of both.
- 11:32It's structural integrity with a layer of grime.
- 11:35It demands that you look past the surface.
- 11:36If you can't do that, you're going to hate it.
- 11:38It's a city that challenges you a little.
- 11:40OK, let's get to the part everyone is waiting for the
- 11:43numbers. We called this episode the
- 11:45Budget King in 2026, so we need to prove it.
- 11:48I want to look at the economics of 2026, specifically how the
- 11:51inflation from the euro transition has settled in.
- 11:54The contrast is stark. Let's look at the biggest line
- 11:56item for any traveler accommodation.
- 11:59Where are we sleeping and how much does it hurt?
- 12:02Let's break it down by traveler type.
- 12:04OK, let's start with the backpacker, The hostile crowd in
- 12:07Dubrovnik in the high season of 2026.
- 12:10A bed in a twelve person dorm, not a private room.
- 12:14A dorm is hitting €60 a night. That is insane.
- 12:16For that price I'd expect someone to fasan me with a palm
- 12:19frond while I sleep €60. You get a locker and a reading
- 12:22light if you're lucky. Now look at Rejepa.
- 12:24You can still find a solid, clean modern hostile beds for 25
- 12:29to 35 euros. That is essentially half price
- 12:32or less. Half price.
- 12:33Think about that math. For the price of one week in
- 12:35Dubrovnik, you can stay two weeks in Rejeka.
- 12:37That changes the fundamental nature of your trip.
- 12:40It goes from a quick, expensive hit to a longer, more immersive
- 12:43stay. What about for people who have
- 12:45aged out of the hostel scene? Mid range travelers?
- 12:48Maybe a couple or solo traveler who wants their own bathroom.
- 12:51Right, so if you want a decent hotel room or a private
- 12:54apartment, something standard, clean, central and split, you
- 12:58are looking at €200 a night easily.
- 13:01And that's not even for something fancy. €200, Wow.
- 13:04In Rejeka, looking at places like the Hotel Bonavia or
- 13:08similar three to four-star standards, you were looking at
- 13:1080 to 110 euros. Again, massive savings.
- 13:14That's €100 a day you're saving just on the room. €100 a day you
- 13:18can spend on food, on experiences, on day trips.
- 13:21It completely changes the calculus.
- 13:23But what if I want to ball out? What if I'm a luxury traveler
- 13:26who just happens to like port cities?
- 13:28Is there even an option for that?
- 13:30This is where it gets surprising.
- 13:31There is a place called the Hilton Pasta Bella.
- 13:33It was built a few years back. Located a bit outside the center
- 13:36towards Opetiza. It is world class spa, pools,
- 13:41private beach. OK, so a proper resort, what's
- 13:43that going to cost me? You're paying 250 to $350.00 a
- 13:47night there. That sounds expensive.
- 13:49It is expensive until you compare it.
- 13:51An equivalent five star resort experience in Dubrovnik,
- 13:55something with a private beach and a spa, is going to cost you
- 13:59€800 plus per night. 800 So it's what, a third of the price for
- 14:04the same level of luxury? Pretty much.
- 14:05So even the luxury is a bargain, relatively speaking.
- 14:08The value proposition scores a 10/10 across every budget
- 14:11category. You simply get more square
- 14:13footage and better service for your euro because the demand
- 14:16isn't strangling the supply, no? Food you have to eat, and in
- 14:212026 food prices have gone up everywhere in Europe.
- 14:24They have, but Regeka has a secret weapon, the Morinda.
- 14:27Explain Morinda for us. Is that a dish I've never heard
- 14:30of? That No, it's a concept, it's a
- 14:31tradition. It's essentially the workers
- 14:33brunch or early lunch. It usually happens between
- 14:361000AM and 1.0 PM. Yeah, in the coastal cities this
- 14:40used to be everywhere, but in the tourist hubs it's largely
- 14:43disappeared or been replaced by brunch with avocado toast for
- 14:4618. Not the avocado toast, yeah, but
- 14:49in regekka. Because it's a working city, the
- 14:51Morinda is alive and well. You walk into a canoba, a
- 14:54Tavern, and ask what the Morinda is.
- 14:57You can get a massive plate of fried calamari and Chard, or a
- 15:00bean Stew with sausage gras or a beef goulash with naki for 11:50
- 15:06euro. That is incredible value for a
- 15:07sit down hot meal, a real meal. It's home cooking, it's not
- 15:12fancy plating, but it fills you up for the day and then for the
- 15:15snackers, for the really budget conscious, you have the Berwick
- 15:18Index. The Holy Grail of Balkan pastry.
- 15:22I feel like we judge every city by the price of its burek.
- 15:24It's the law. We have to it's the most
- 15:26important economic indicator in 2026.
- 15:29A Berwick meat or cheese is costing about two polleners and
- 15:3250 at 3.01 Rejika bakeries. A slice and pizza at the 24 hour
- 15:36places is 3 times. You can eat for what, under €10
- 15:39a day if you really try? You can legitimately feed
- 15:41yourself on €15 a day here if you stick to bakeries and
- 15:44supermarkets comfortably. But even if you want to be
- 15:46fancy, right, the source mentions a place called Canoba
- 15:49Nebulosa. What's the deal there, right?
- 15:52This is for your date night, your one splurge of the trip.
- 15:55White tablecloths, view of the river, excellent service.
- 15:58We're talking appetizers, truffle pasta, which this region
- 16:02is famous for. Fresh fish, A bottle of wine.
- 16:05So the whole experience. The whole thing, the bill there
- 16:07comes to about €45 per person. That's not cheap, but for a
- 16:11splurge that's pretty good. Compare it that same meal,
- 16:14truffles, fresh fish, wine and H for a town, yeah, you are
- 16:17looking at 90 to €100 per person minimum.
- 16:21You are paying a view tax inch far that simply doesn't exist in
- 16:24Rejeka. And coffee.
- 16:25I feel like coffee is the true index of the Croatian economy.
- 16:28Yeah, it's the lifeblood. It really is espresso on the
- 16:31court, so the main drag where you are paying for the location
- 16:33is 1 point €80. If you get it with milk, a
- 16:36macchiato, it's 2.20 in notorious center.
- 16:39Seeing a 1.80 a coffee is like seeing a Unicorn.
- 16:42You take a picture of the menu. So let's break down the daily
- 16:45budget. Give me the hard numbers.
- 16:46If I'm a scraping by traveler, hostile, walking everywhere,
- 16:49eating burek, what's my daily burn rate?
- 16:51You can do Rejeka for €45 a day that covers your bed and your
- 16:54calories. That is wild.
- 16:56You can't even sleep in Dubrovnik for 45.
- 16:58No, the bed alone costs more than your whole day in Rejeka.
- 17:02Now if you're a comfortable traveler, sharing a private
- 17:04apartment with a partner, having one nice sit down Miranda, going
- 17:08to a museum, taking the bus, you're looking at €90.00 a day.
- 17:13€90.00 for a comfortable day in Europe in 2026.
- 17:17That's fantastic. It really is and the baller
- 17:19budget. OK, lay it on me.
- 17:20High end hotel, taxis everywhere, seafood dinners,
- 17:23cocktails, $250 a day, which in the context of Western Europe in
- 17:282026 is a steal for a luxury experience.
- 17:32OK, the Mathworks, the economics are undeniable, but there are
- 17:36traps. It's not all smooth sailing and
- 17:38cheap truffles. We need to do a reality check.
- 17:41Yeah, because this all sounds too good to be true.
- 17:42This is where the deep dive adds value.
- 17:44You can't just look at the price tag, you have to look at the
- 17:46physics of the city. Let's talk about the vertical
- 17:48reality, because looking at a map, Rajeka looks narrow but
- 17:51manageable. It is the Google Maps solution.
- 17:54It's a classic problem in coastal cities, but Rajeka takes
- 17:58it to an extreme. The city is literally clamped
- 18:01onto the side of a Canyon and a mountain range.
- 18:04It goes up and it goes up fast. So you look at the map and your
- 18:07Airbnb looks like it's two blocks from the main square.
- 18:10A 5 minute walk, you think? Right, it's two blocks away
- 18:13horizontally, but Google Maps doesn't always clearly show you
- 18:17that those two blocks involve 400 vertical steps up a Canyon
- 18:21wall. I can feel my calves burning
- 18:23just thinking about it. That's vacation ruiner right
- 18:25there if you're not prepared. It really is.
- 18:27There's a famous anecdote about the Trossat Stairway.
- 18:30It's a pilgrimage site. Technically it leads from the
- 18:32river delta up to the Trossat Castle.
- 18:34How many steps are we talking about?
- 18:35561. No.
- 18:37Imagine doing that in July. It's 30 degrees Celsius, 80%
- 18:41humidity. The source mentions A traveler
- 18:43who tried to walk it just to see the view.
- 18:46By the time they got to the top, they were drenched in sweat,
- 18:49miserable, dehydrated, and too tired to even enjoy the castle.
- 18:52They just laid on the ground and gasped for air.
- 18:55Probably pretty much. So what's the fix?
- 18:58How do we hack the verticality? Please tell me there's a hack.
- 19:01You have to respect gravity. Use the system.
- 19:04You take the number 2 bus up to Trisat.
- 19:06It costs a couple of EUR. You enjoy the view, have a
- 19:09coffee at the top where the breezes.
- 19:11Then you walk down the stairs back to the city center.
- 19:14Gravity is your friend, not your enemy.
- 19:16That's the key exactly. If you try to fight the terrain
- 19:19and regeka you will lose every single time.
- 19:21Now let's talk about the wetter again.
- 19:23You dropped that bomb earlier about it being wetter than
- 19:26London. Why is there a cloud factory
- 19:29nearby? What is going on?
- 19:31Actually, yes, in a way. It's called Mount Uchica.
- 19:34It's this massive mountain range just to the West.
- 19:37It creates what meteorologists call an orographic lift.
- 19:40OK, break that down. The moist air comes in off the
- 19:43Adriatic Sea, hits the mountain, gets pushed up, cools down and
- 19:47dumps all it's rain right on top of Rejeka.
- 19:49It's a perfect rain making machine.
- 19:51So you could have a sunny day in Pula, which is on the other side
- 19:54of the mountain. And it is pouring rain in
- 19:56Rejeka, literally 50 kilometers away.
- 19:59It happens all the time. You can drive out of the rain in
- 20:0120 minutes. And it's not just gentle rain,
- 20:04right? We need to talk about the Borah.
- 20:05The Borah, it's a legend. It's a northeasterly wind that
- 20:09comes crashing down the mountains.
- 20:11It is cold, it is dry, and it is incredibly strong.
- 20:14We are talking gusts that can flip trucks on the highway.
- 20:18Whoa, so your cheap drugstore umbrella.
- 20:20Is garbage. It will be turned inside out in
- 20:233 seconds. You see them stuffed into trash
- 20:25cans all over the city after a storm.
- 20:27It's a graveyard of bad umbrellas.
- 20:30A complete waste of money. So.
- 20:32Gear advice? If I'm packing for a summer
- 20:35trip, do I really need a raincoat?
- 20:37It seems so counterintuitive, yes.
- 20:39You need a sturdy windbreaker or shell, but more importantly you
- 20:42need waterproof shoes. Not water resistant, waterproof.
- 20:46Why shoes specifically? Is it just the rain?
- 20:48Because the drainage in the Old Town can be historic, the
- 20:52puddles get deep and the Lang Stone pavement.
- 20:54When it gets wet, it becomes a nice ring.
- 20:56If you are wearing flimsy mesh sneakers or flip flops, your
- 20:59feet are going to be soaked and cold or you're going to slip.
- 21:01Waterproof shoes in July. That is a counterintuitive tip,
- 21:06but a game changer. It's the difference between a
- 21:09miserable day and an adventure. It really is.
- 21:11OK, let's talk about the biggest misconception.
- 21:14The beach. This breaks hearts, doesn't.
- 21:17It it destroys vacations. People book a hotel in Rasheka
- 21:20Center, they pack their inflatable Flamingo and they
- 21:23think, great, I'll just walk out and jump in the sea.
- 21:25But you can't, you absolutely cannot swim in the city center.
- 21:28It is a commercial port. The water is full of ferries,
- 21:31fishing trawlers and sometimes huge tankers.
- 21:34It's deep, it's industrial and it's not safe.
- 21:38So you have to commute to the beach.
- 21:39You have to plan it. You do.
- 21:41You have to treat the beach like a destination, not an amenity.
- 21:44You need to go West to the Contrita or Costa Bella
- 21:47neighborhoods, or east to Peasant.
- 21:48And you need to take the number one or #2 bus.
- 21:51It's a 15 to 20 minute ride. That changes the vibe of a
- 21:54holiday, doesn't it? If you have to catch a bus with
- 21:56your towel, it feels less spontaneous.
- 21:59It does. It makes it an urban trip with
- 22:00beach access rather than a beach trip.
- 22:02And there's an anecdote about Saba Chivo Beach.
- 22:05Have you seen pictures of this place?
- 22:06I have it. Looks stunning.
- 22:08It's this little Pebble Cove with a Cliff behind it.
- 22:10Looks like a postcard. It is stunning.
- 22:12It's one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia, but because
- 22:15it's the only really photogenic beach close to the center, it is
- 22:19a victim of its own success. How bad is it overcrowded?
- 22:23The source describes it as a seal colony.
- 22:26In July and August. It is towel to towel.
- 22:29You cannot see the pebbles. You are intimately acquainted
- 22:32with your neighbors sunscreen habits.
- 22:34So if you want space, you have to go further out.
- 22:36Exactly, you have to be willing to travel for your swim.
- 22:39If you hate buses, this might be a deal.
- 22:41Breaker now another logistical trap that catches people out the
- 22:45Sunday shutdown. This is a national law that came
- 22:48into effect a few years ago, but it is strictly enforced.
- 22:51In Rejeka, Croatia passed laws limiting Sunday work to protect
- 22:55workers time. Which is great for workers.
- 22:57Fantastic for workers, terrible for the unprepared tourist.
- 23:01In 2026, the malls are closed on Sundays.
- 23:04The supermarkets are mostly closed.
- 23:05Maybe you'll find one designated store open in the whole city,
- 23:08but don't count on it. Bakeries close at noon.
- 23:11So imagine the scenario. You arrive on a Saturday night.
- 23:14You're tired from your flight. You go straight to sleep.
- 23:16You wake up Sunday morning hungry, You think I'll just pop
- 23:19to the store and get some eggs and coffee?
- 23:21Nope, closed. I'll go to the bakery if it's
- 23:23past 12. Closed.
- 23:25So you're starving, or at least very hangry.
- 23:28You are forced to eat at restaurants which are allowed to
- 23:30be open, but your budget plan of cooking cheap breakfast is out
- 23:34the window. Your whole day's budget is blown
- 23:37before 10 AM. That is a critical tip.
- 23:41Shop on Saturday or starve on Sunday.
- 23:43It requires planning. You have to think like a
- 23:45resident, not a tourist. That's the theme here.
- 23:47And the final trap, the airport lie.
- 23:50Ah. Yes, Rejeka airport code RJK
- 23:56sounds so convenient. Fly to Rejeka.
- 23:58But it's not in Rejeka. It is not.
- 24:00It is on the island of Kirk. That's a whole other landmass.
- 24:03It is. It's connected by a bridge, but
- 24:04it's a 30 minute drive minimum without traffic.
- 24:07And the shuttle bus situation is, let's call it, optimistic.
- 24:11Optimistic. What does that mean?
- 24:12Unreliable. They try to sync the buses with
- 24:15the flight arrivals, but if your flight is delayed, which happens
- 24:18all the time with budget airlines, the bus might not
- 24:20wait. And then what?
- 24:22You're stranded. Then you are stuck on an island.
- 24:24Your only option is a taxi, which will cost you 50 or €60.
- 24:29There goes your budget savings for the first two days just
- 24:32getting to your hostel. So what's the strategy?
- 24:34Avoid the airport. Honestly, yes.
- 24:37Often it's better to fly into tourest in Italy or even Zagreb.
- 24:41From Zagreb the bus Trajeca is only two hours, it runs every
- 24:45hour and it drops you right in the center.
- 24:47It's reliable. Flying in Trajeca can actually
- 24:50be more hassle than it's worth. OK, we've covered the grit, the
- 24:53rain, the stairs, and the fake airport.
- 24:55I feel like we've done a good job of scaring people off, but
- 24:58there has to be a reason to go, right?
- 25:00Let's talk about the soul of the city, the highlights.
- 25:03Why do people fall in love with this place?
- 25:05This is where Rejecta shines for the right kind of traveler.
- 25:08The traveler who finds beauty and decay.
- 25:11The traveler who likes industrial Gothic.
- 25:15You mentioned the Hartera, Tell me more about that.
- 25:17The Hartera. It's the old paper factory.
- 25:19This place is legendary. In the 19th century, this
- 25:22factory supplied cigarette paper to half the world.
- 25:25It was a powerhouse, a huge employer.
- 25:28And now, Now it's a ruin. It's located in the Canyon of
- 25:31the Regentina River, just up from the center.
- 25:33It's this massive complex of brick chimneys, shattered
- 25:37windows and concrete halls. Is it a museum?
- 25:41Can you buy a ticket? No, that's the magic of it.
- 25:43It's just there. It's Gray area, legal to enter.
- 25:46People walk their dogs there. Graffiti artists practice there.
- 25:49Sometimes they hold underground raves there.
- 25:52But the description is haunting. You have the rushing river
- 25:55noise, the smell of damp earth and nature slowly reclaiming
- 25:58these industrial giants, trees growing out of factory floors.
- 26:02It's beautiful and eerie. It sounds like a set from The
- 26:05Last of Us. It absolutely does.
- 26:06It captures the soul of the city perfectly.
- 26:08Production, decay and nature. Taking it back, if you were into
- 26:11photography or just urban exploration, it's a paradise.
- 26:14You can feel the ghosts of the workers and.
- 26:16On the other end of the sensory spectrum, there's the cathedral
- 26:19of fish. The Rabernica, the central fish
- 26:22market. Now usually fish markets are
- 26:24just functional metal sheds, not in rejecta.
- 26:27It's our nouveau, isn't it? It's a masterpiece.
- 26:30It was built in 1916. It looks like a temple.
- 26:33High ceilings, glass, intricate stonework.
- 26:37But you have to look closely at the columns.
- 26:38Who am I looking for? The capitals of the columns
- 26:40aren't flowers or leaves. They are carved stone crabs,
- 26:44octopuses and fish. The details are incredible.
- 26:48That is amazing detail. A temple dedicated to seafood.
- 26:52And the experience inside is visceral.
- 26:54You have to go at 7:00 AM. The noise is deafening.
- 26:57Fishmongers shouting, selling their catch.
- 26:59It smells like the deep ocean. You can buy cheap mussels Dong.
- 27:03Yay, fresh sardines. Ceravola And the key thing noted
- 27:06in the research? No souvenir magnets.
- 27:09Zero. This is not for you, the
- 27:10tourist. This is for the grandmothers
- 27:12buying lunch. It's total authenticity.
- 27:14It's a place where locals live, not where tourists buy trinkets.
- 27:17If you want to see the beating heart of the city, stand in the
- 27:20fish market for 10 minutes. Now let's say someone is
- 27:22listening to this and thinking, OK, Rejeka sounds a bit too
- 27:25gritty for me, but I like the price point.
- 27:27Or maybe they just want to break from the rust.
- 27:30What are the alternatives nearby?
- 27:32You have excellent regional alternatives.
- 27:35Think of Rejeka as the hub of a wheel.
- 27:38The spokes lead to very different worlds.
- 27:41If you want the Kvarner Bay vibe but you want it polished and
- 27:44fancy, you go to Opatija. Opatija's the old Dame.
- 27:47The old Dame. It's just 20 minutes away by the
- 27:49number 32 bus. It's a completely different
- 27:51universe. It's full of Habsburg villas,
- 27:54manicured gardens, hotels with chandeliers.
- 27:57It has a French Riviera vibe. Sounds beautiful.
- 28:01It is stunning. But here is the catch.
- 28:03It costs AA coffee. There is 4.
- 28:06A meal is €80. It's where the aristocracy used
- 28:09to winter. It's clean, it's flat, and it's
- 28:11luxurious. But you can visit without
- 28:13staying there. Exactly.
- 28:14That's the strategy. Then if you are a pure beach
- 28:17lover, if that's your number one priority, you look at Kirk.
- 28:20The island with the airport. The island, you can see it from
- 28:23Rejeka. Just rent a car, take a bus over
- 28:25the bridge, go to Bashaka. It has a 2 kilometer long Pebble
- 28:30Beach that is arguably one of the best in all of Croatia.
- 28:34The water is crystal clear. And for the history buffs, if
- 28:37they want Roman ruins. Hula.
- 28:39It's about an hour away. It has the Roman amphitheater,
- 28:41one of best preserved in the world.
- 28:43But keep in mind Pula is a seasonal town.
- 28:45In the winter, Pula can feel like a ghost town.
- 28:48Rejeka, because it's a city of residents and students, stays
- 28:52open and alive all year round. So we have a proposed itinerary
- 28:56here called the Kavarner Contrast.
- 28:58Yeah, I love this idea because it feels like you're cheating
- 29:01the system. This is how you hack the region.
- 29:02This is the expert move. You base yourself in Rejeka.
- 29:05Why? To save money on sleep.
- 29:07You take advantage of those 30 hostel beds or 80 apartments.
- 29:11So Monday through Wednesday, you are urban, you're exploring the
- 29:15city. You explore the grit, the
- 29:16museums, the Harterra, the nightlife.
- 29:18You eat cheap Barack. You live like a local.
- 29:21Day 4 You take the bus to OPA Teja.
- 29:24You have a fancy day. You dress up.
- 29:27You walk the Lungomer promenade. You eat an expensive slice of
- 29:30cake at the Hotel Farmer. You pretend you're an Austro
- 29:33Hungarian aristocrat. And then you go back to your
- 29:35cheap bed in Rejeka. Exactly.
- 29:38You get the luxury experience without the luxury hotel bill.
- 29:41It's the best of both worlds. And day five, you need a nature
- 29:45day. You go to the port in Rejeka,
- 29:47right in the center, and you get on a catamaran.
- 29:50You go to the islands, Molly, Lucien or Rob.
- 29:53You get your pure nature fix. You swim in turquoise water.
- 29:57Then you take the boat back. It's the perfect mix.
- 30:00You get the grit, the glitz, and the nature.
- 30:02And you do it for half the price of a week in Dubrovnik.
- 30:04It's a no brainer if you're smart about it.
- 30:06Let's talk about safety and comfort a bit more.
- 30:09We mentioned the dark streets, but what about the actual stats?
- 30:12Is it safe to be a budget traveler with a backpack here?
- 30:15Statistically, Croatia is one of the safest countries in Europe
- 30:19and Regeka follows that trend. Violent crime against tourists
- 30:23is virtually non existent. You are not going to get mugged.
- 30:26That is always reassuring. As a solo female traveler, for
- 30:29example, walking alone at 2:00 AM in Rejecta generally feels
- 30:32safer than walking at 2:00 PM in some major European capitals
- 30:36like Paris or Barcelona. But there are vibes to be aware
- 30:40of. It's not all pristine.
- 30:41Yes, the bus station area, Shabika and around the train
- 30:45station can attract some drunks and rough sleepers.
- 30:48It's typical for transport hubs. It's not necessarily dangerous,
- 30:52but it can be uncomfortable. It's gritty.
- 30:55You might get asked for cigarettes or change.
- 30:57What about scams? Are there tourist scams to watch
- 31:00out? For very few the taxi drivers
- 31:02are generally honest, especially if you use the apps like Uber or
- 31:05Bolt. You don't get the menu scam
- 31:07where prices aren't listed because again, locals eat here.
- 31:10If a restaurant rips off a local they go out of business.
- 31:12Word spreads fast. We talked about the rain, but
- 31:14what about air quality? It is a port city.
- 31:17There is a refinery. That's a real concern for some
- 31:20people. That is a valid concern.
- 31:22It is an industrial zone. Depending on the wind direction,
- 31:25you can sometimes smell the refinery or the ship fumes.
- 31:28If you are super sensitive to asthma triggers or if you have
- 31:30respiratory issues, you should check the air quality index AQI
- 31:35before booking a place right on the waterfront.
- 31:37Maybe stay a bit further up the hill.
- 31:39And the tap water, is it safe to drink?
- 31:42Drinkable. Excellent actually.
- 31:44It comes straight from the mountains behind the city.
- 31:46It's cold and clean. Do not buy bottled water, it's a
- 31:49waste of money and plastic. OK, we have arrived at the
- 31:52verdict matrix. We are going to break this down
- 31:54by traveler type. Who is Rajika 4 and who should
- 31:58avoid it like the plague? Let's start with the backpacker
- 32:01verdict. Yes, a hard yes.
- 32:03It is the best base in Croatia. Cheap transport, authentic
- 32:07nightlife. You can party with university
- 32:09students and locals in dive bars, not just other tourists on
- 32:12a pub crawl. It's real.
- 32:13The digital nomad. Yes, another strong yes.
- 32:18The Internet is fast, 5G is everywhere.
- 32:20The cafe culture allows you to sit for hours with a laptop and
- 32:23one coffee and no one kicks you out.
- 32:25The cost of living allows you to save money.
- 32:28It's a very functional city for working.
- 32:29The luxury traveler. Surprisingly yes, but with the
- 32:32caveat you don't stay in the city center, you stay at the
- 32:36Hilton, Costa Bella or a high end villa in the Velasco
- 32:39neighborhood. You engage with the quiet luxury
- 32:42scene, the high end dining like Nebo, which has a Michelin *
- 32:46It's the opposite of Dubrovnik's loud luxury.
- 32:49It's discreet. The couple.
- 32:51Maybe this is the tricky one. It depends on what kind of
- 32:54couple you are. If you are culture first, if you
- 32:56like museums, galleries and history, it's a yes.
- 33:00If you are sunset and wine romantics who want a perfect
- 33:02backdrop for your engagement photos, you might find the view
- 33:05of the container ship terminal unsexy.
- 33:07Right, it's not the classic romantic getaway.
- 33:09Not in the traditional sense, no.
- 33:11And finally, the family. No, this is the hard no.
- 33:14Why so definitive? It's not stroller friendly
- 33:16because of the stairs. You will be carrying that
- 33:19stroller up 400 steps. The beach access is difficult
- 33:23with toddlers. Getting on and off buses with
- 33:25beach gear and screaming kids is a nightmare.
- 33:28The air quality can be a concern.
- 33:30If you have a family, go to Kirk or Rabb.
- 33:33Don't fight the city, it's not built for that.
- 33:35That is a very clear breakdown. So if we synthesize all of this,
- 33:38what is the final word on Rejeka in 2026?
- 33:42Rejeka's superpower is that it respects the Traveller by not
- 33:46trying to sell them anything. It doesn't care if you like it.
- 33:49It's indifferent to us. It is, and in a world of over
- 33:51tourism, indifference is a relief.
- 33:54You trade the Game of Thrones Polish for solvency and
- 33:56authenticity. It's for the modern traveller
- 33:59who wants to see what a country actually looks like.
- 34:01Warts, graffiti, rain, Burrick and all.
- 34:03Exactly. It forces you to ask yourself a
- 34:05question. Really.
- 34:07Are you a tourist who wants the postcard, or are you a traveler
- 34:11who wants the reality? And if you want the reality, you
- 34:13better pack waterproof shoes. And bring an appetite for Berg.
- 34:16Awesome, that is our deep dive on Reheka.
- 34:19We hope this saves you some EUR and helps you plan a better,
- 34:21more authentic trip in 2026. Safe travels everyone.
- 34:25Thanks for listening, catch you on the next deep dive.
