- 0:10Don Armstrong: And welcome to the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show.
- 0:13Don Armstrong: Just ahead.
- 0:14Don Armstrong: Thinking about that garage floor?
- 0:17Don Armstrong: Maybe not.
- 0:17Don Armstrong: Oh, maybe you thought about getting out the Simoniz.
- 0:21Don Armstrong: Jeff has cost and maintenance for your fall project.
- 0:25Don Armstrong: Mr.
- 0:25Don Armstrong: Mars has this week's driving destinations, and we got a special guest right out of the box this morning.
- 0:30Don Armstrong: Howdy, along with Mike out of this world, Mars.
- 0:32Don Armstrong: We always need more Jeff Zeken, Chief Engineer David Ainsley, just now getting out of bed.
- 0:38Don Armstrong: Are you sure?
- 0:42Don Armstrong: What were you seeing, Mike?
- 0:43Don Armstrong: I said, Are you sure he's up?
- 0:44Don Armstrong: He might be just coming back.
- 0:46Don Armstrong: I'm not sure of anything.
- 0:48Don Armstrong: Glad you could join us on this uh Saturday morning for our live broadcast.
- 0:52Don Armstrong: Uh, it's always a pleasure to have you with us.
- 0:54Don Armstrong: Going to be another hot one.
- 0:55Don Armstrong: We had some big storms yesterday here.
- 0:56Don Armstrong: Yeah, a few storms yet.
- 0:57Don Armstrong: Yeah, kind of put the uh quash on that nice wash job that you got during the day, ready for your big date on Friday night.
- 1:04Don Armstrong: Whoever washed their car, we appreciate the rain.
- 1:06Don Armstrong: Yeah, because that'll always bring it to us.
- 1:08Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 1:09Don Armstrong: All right, let's get right to it, shall we?
- 1:11Don Armstrong: Uh, special guest this morning is Denny Moody.
- 1:14Don Armstrong: He is the owner, curator, and master of all things Ultimate 80s.
- 1:19Don Armstrong: He's the owner of the Ultimate 80s garage out in Fulshire, Texas.
- 1:23Don Armstrong: All right.
- 1:23Don Armstrong: Denny, good morning to you and thanks for joining us.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Good morning, guys.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Thanks for having me.
- 1:27Don Armstrong: Well, you bet.
- 1:28Don Armstrong: And um, so I guess the first question is you obviously are an 80s and 90s kind of guy.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: I am, yeah.
- 1:38Don Armstrong: Yeah, well, uh, it it uh it kind of this is it strikes me as what we all of us car guys really like is to you know have some stuff in the garage that we can relate to, that we grew up with, that we can that we can relate to.
- 1:56Don Armstrong: I see that you've got the Denny's sign behind you.
- 1:59Don Armstrong: That's cute.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Makes me huddle reference.
- 2:02Don Armstrong: Yeah, I think so.
- 2:03Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 2:04Don Armstrong: Um, watches.
- 2:05Don Armstrong: Look, you got Michael Jordan behind you.
- 2:08Don Armstrong: You got, I mean, this is what we're talking about.
- 2:10Don Armstrong: This is the ultimate 80s garage.
- 2:13Don Armstrong: So what uh possessed you to get this going?
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Well, uh growing up in the 80s and 90s, um, you know, I I I saw I saw collections on television of like 60s and 50s and 60s cars where they um, you know, they had a beautiful garage and they had a malt shop in there and they had all the aesthetic of it.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: I appreciated what I was seeing, but I I had no real point of reference to any of that.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, it didn't seem to me.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I wanted to create something like that for a kid from my generation.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: So hence the ultimate 80s garage.
- 2:49Don Armstrong: Yeah, and I assume that uh you've got uh some followers in the 80s and 90s generation, and uh, you know, um apparently you're a big deal out in Fulshire, Texas.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah, apparently.
- 3:05Don Armstrong: Well, I mean, I didn't mean to put you on the spot, but uh I'm going, you know, huh?
- 3:10Don Armstrong: My I raised my girls in the 80s and 90s, and you kind of fall into that category.
- 3:15Don Armstrong: And um sure, I I could I could go for a son-in-law that has a really cool garage that I could hang out and we could watch football together and stuff like that.
- 3:23Don Armstrong: And I'm sure that you've got those guys around you.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: I I do, yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and that was the neat thing about this journey of you know having the car shows and inviting people into the garage is is I found that there were a lot of folks just like me that that really didn't have uh a lot to relate to to people outside of the car world.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you get me in these neighborhood uh house parties, and guys are like, you know, hey Denny, what are you into?
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you like to hunt?
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Well, no, not really.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, do you do you like to fish?
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And about a four or five things they would ask me, I would say no.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: They'd be like, okay, I'll just go and talk to the other person.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So um there's a lot of guys like me that are just looking for a community of people that they can relate to, and the car community uh provides that for us, uh, guys into these real niche kind of hobbies.
- 4:14Don Armstrong: So I'm gonna throw out a car name to you, and um and I say that because I lovingly refer to uh the Buick Regal as a standout of the 80s.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 4:26Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 4:26Don Armstrong: Do you have one?
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I don't have one.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Let me switch to the garage view, so uh bear with me, and I'll show you what we have in here today.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, front camera, we'll go back camera.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Technology.
- 4:45Don Armstrong: You gotta you okay.
- 4:47Don Armstrong: So there's a Corvette, there's a Ferrari.
- 4:49Don Armstrong: Nice.
- 4:49Don Armstrong: Those are yours?
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, and actually, this Corvette was my very first car.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: I've owned that since I was 15 years old.
- 4:56Don Armstrong: It's pretty clean.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: It's a 1980, so I built this in high school.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:03Don Armstrong: Wow, which high school did you go to?
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: I went to Alvin High School, home of the Yellow Jackets.
- 5:08Don Armstrong: All right, Alvin High School.
- 5:10Don Armstrong: Well, look at that car.
- 5:11Don Armstrong: That's a beautiful example of 1980, right there, my friend.
- 5:14Don Armstrong: Absolutely.
- 5:15Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 5:16Don Armstrong: Is it all stock?
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: It is, yeah, it's it's mostly stock.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: I basically spent all my lunch money on this thing.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I would literally, I would literally save like three dollars from not eating lunch so I could spend it on this car.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: I'd have like 20 bucks so I could head to super shops on the weekend.
- 5:34Don Armstrong: Super shops, boy, there's a bell.
- 5:36Don Armstrong: Oh, very well, yeah.
- 5:37Don Armstrong: Spencer Highway.
- 5:38Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:39Don Armstrong: They took over that whole market, as a matter of fact.
- 5:42Don Armstrong: And then the market kind of dried up because kids your age didn't know what to do with cars.
- 5:49Don Armstrong: Uh for the most part.
- 5:51Don Armstrong: You did, we did, and uh, that's kind of where we drew our love from uh high school stuff.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um you you know, my dad figured out very early that uh he could buy me an old junk car and that was cheaper than buying toys.
- 6:05Don Armstrong: Well, yeah, in many cases, that that's exactly right.
- 6:09Don Armstrong: So, um, what did your dad do?
- 6:11Don Armstrong: Do we know your dad?
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Uh so my dad uh he worked at the port of Houston, he was a longshoreman, and um he had originally bought this car from a friend of ours because he was gonna drive it to work every day, and he's a pretty big guy.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: He's six three and about you know he drove this to car the he drove this to work once, and he's like, Yeah, I'm not doing this, that's it.
- 6:36Don Armstrong: Yeah, and then he gave it to you.
- 6:38Don Armstrong: Well, lucky you boy.
- 6:39Don Armstrong: I'll tell you what, as a as a kid of any age, I'd love to have I'd love to have that car today.
- 6:44Don Armstrong: That's a pretty car.
- 6:44Don Armstrong: Yeah, and as has it has it got an L82 engine in it, or is it just a stock 350?
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: It's the L48 in this one.
- 6:52Don Armstrong: Okay, the 48.
- 6:52Don Armstrong: That's the 48.
- 6:54Don Armstrong: Yeah, yes, stock engine.
- 6:55Don Armstrong: And it's got and it's got the upgraded wheels on it, too.
- 6:58Don Armstrong: Like the it does.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Blood red interior, it looks like, yeah, yes, white letter, very shiny.
- 7:03Don Armstrong: Yeah, oh yes, very shiny, yeah, polished, as a matter of fact.
- 7:06Don Armstrong: Uh, you know, I uh I'm jealous.
- 7:09Don Armstrong: What so uh find out more about you?
- 7:12Don Armstrong: What what do you do in in real life?
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: In real life, uh I work in oil and gas.
- 7:18Don Armstrong: Okay, and obviously you've been pretty successful at it, I assume.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Uh I've been very successful at it, yes.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Um you know, people come in here and they they assume that you just wrote a check for all this.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: It's not really the case.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: I built this over a course of you know about 20 years uh between the cars and all the memorabilia and things.
- 7:38Don Armstrong: Sure, of course.
- 7:39Don Armstrong: And uh, you know, at one point I had a garage full of stuff, and uh now that I'm older, I I've I've pared it down to the point where I have nothing.
- 7:49Don Armstrong: Yeah, it's not quite it's not that quite that radical, but I still have some memorabilia in there, not as nice as yours.
- 7:56Don Armstrong: So you have meets, do you have people come out to the house?
- 7:59Don Armstrong: Do you have pronoun events?
- 8:01Don Armstrong: What what tell us about uh your group that you're with?
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so um I host an annual event called Retrofest West, and it's a celebration of 80s and 90s cars culture and lifestyle.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: So um it's open to cars from the 80s and 90s.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: We'll normally do 250 plus cars here on the property, just 80s and 90s cars, and everyone dresses up in 80s gear, and it's just a fun event.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Um and people, you know, people want to people come to the property because you know, we're we're on um, you know, a three and a half acre place here, and it the cars just look better on the grass.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: I call it the Easter egg effect.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Same thing with the double beach, you know.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: When you put cars on grass, they just pop, the colors pop versus concrete, you know.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: And plus, since you're at someone's house, it's a more personal, it feels more like a family reunion.
- 8:52Don Armstrong: Do neighbors feel okay about that?
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Uh actually, they do.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: My neighbor across the street loaned me his empty 1.5 acre lot so that we could park spectators there.
- 9:04Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 9:05Don Armstrong: Well, we're starting to lose your audio.
- 9:07Don Armstrong: So if you could if you could get near a window or something, that would be good.
- 9:12Don Armstrong: Uh and we love the pan shots here to give so good, yeah.
- 9:15Don Armstrong: Give you an idea of uh of all the stuff that you've got in there.
- 9:18Don Armstrong: How many cars in your collection?
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Uh in my collection now, I've paired it down a bit.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm down to about 10.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: I was at height of 20.
- 9:28Don Armstrong: Well, I I I like your selection that you kept.
- 9:32Don Armstrong: It's good.
- 9:32Don Armstrong: I like it a lot.
- 9:33Don Armstrong: Do you drive any of these cars?
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: I drive them all.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna open these doors so that I can get maybe some cell phone perception here.
- 9:41Don Armstrong: Well, that you're gonna get the heat too, but that's okay.
- 9:44Don Armstrong: You'll we'll we'll only keep you for a little while longer.
- 9:46Don Armstrong: So when is the Retro Fest West?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Retro Fest West is here at my house at the Ultimate 80s garage.
- 9:53Don Armstrong: Right, but uh but when is it?
- 9:55Don Armstrong: It's it it is October 31st.
- 9:59Mike Marrs: It's on Halloween.
- 10:00Mike Marrs: It's on Halloween.
- 10:01Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 10:02Don Armstrong: Do you have to register to to uh participate?
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, for for this year's event we are asking uh folks to register.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Well, we would register for Retrofest every year.
- 10:11Don Armstrong: I normally is there a fee to enter?
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Uh no fee.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Everything's free.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: We don't charge anyone anything.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: We don't charge vendors, we don't charge retention.
- 10:21Don Armstrong: I got you.
- 10:22Don Armstrong: What are the out what are the hours of uh the uh Retro Fest West?
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: The event this year will be from eleven to two.
- 10:30Don Armstrong: Eleven to two.
- 10:31Don Armstrong: So it's it's really it's really a cruise in, is what it is.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a cruise in and uh it's a show we don't do trophies or anything like that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: It's just people come out of the time and look at the 80s and 90s cars.
- 10:43unknown: And um, you know, it's the second show that uh crowd that is very fucking underrepresented.
- 10:50Mike Marrs: You can go to the car shows with the second time.
- 10:52Don Armstrong: So where where do we where where do we go to uh where do we go to register?
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: You can go to the ultimate eighties garage uh Facebook page.
- 11:03Don Armstrong: Okay, I think I got that.
- 11:04Don Armstrong: Mars, do you have that?
- 11:05Mike Marrs: Yeah, it's the ultimate eighties garage on Facebook.
- 11:08unknown: Correct.
- 11:08Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 11:09Mike Marrs: Correct.
- 11:09Don Armstrong: All right.
- 11:10Don Armstrong: Denny, I I wish that we could uh talk to you further, but uh the audio is just not working out for us this morning.
- 11:16Don Armstrong: But it's the ultimate eighties garage, and it's on Facebook, and you can register and go and plan now.
- 11:22Don Armstrong: Uh, because uh what are you limited to 250 cars?
- 11:26Don Armstrong: Yes, yes, that's a right now.
- 11:30Don Armstrong: So register now so you can you can you can be one of the 250 to go.
- 11:34Don Armstrong: Um 11 to 2 on Halloween, and I assume that that's a Saturday.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is on a Saturday, yes.
- 11:42Don Armstrong: 80s cars, 80s only, 80s and 90s, and 90s.
- 11:46Don Armstrong: We love it.
- 11:46Don Armstrong: Well, hey, it's it's this is this is kind of a tease for all of our viewers and our listeners because we couldn't get everything that you were saying, but look at this.
- 11:56Don Armstrong: This is only part of what you get because you have all of your friends, 80s and 90s, you get dressed up.
- 12:02Don Armstrong: Hey, I know that the bell bottoms were out in the 80s, but you know what?
- 12:06Don Armstrong: What the heck?
- 12:07Don Armstrong: You could you could get some big hair or something.
- 12:09Don Armstrong: Yeah, I could do that.
- 12:11Don Armstrong: You could do that, I could get some big hair.
- 12:12Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 12:13Don Armstrong: We're gonna put Jeff in a pompadour and it'll all be good.
- 12:16Mike Marrs: The other thing is he has a monthly event, a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, and uh it's got a pretty good turnout, but it's out there, but you can find all that information on his Facebook page.
- 12:26Don Armstrong: It's out there, but you know, out there is actually not that far anymore.
- 12:30Don Armstrong: Foolshire.
- 12:32Don Armstrong: Now it's gotten to be the place to go.
- 12:35Don Armstrong: So uh it's off of 99 out there uh on the west side of town.
- 12:39Don Armstrong: So uh be sure and check it out, the Ultimate 80s Garage.
- 12:42Don Armstrong: Uh Danny Moody, we sure appreciate your time this morning.

- 15:19Don Armstrong: Our live show is on uh 10 o'clock.
- 15:21Jeff Dziekan: Now that eighties and nineties we were talking about, that's not your age, it's the year of the car.
- 15:25unknown: Okay.
- 15:26Jeff Dziekan: Do we have to go there?
- 15:27Jeff Dziekan: I'm just saying.
- 15:29Don Armstrong: You can still show up.
- 15:31Don Armstrong: So uh, you know, I I I I will tell you that I got into painting garage floors.
- 15:37Don Armstrong: Gosh, back in 2007.
- 15:40Don Armstrong: I've spilt paint on garage floors.
- 15:42Don Armstrong: Well, I've done that too.
- 15:43Don Armstrong: But as they say, when you know you paint a car, it's really all in the prep.
- 15:48Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 15:49Don Armstrong: And I have found out through multiple mistakes that it really is all in the prep.
- 15:55Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 15:55Don Armstrong: And you've got to do it by the directions.
- 15:58Don Armstrong: Or you have enough money in your savings account that you can hire somebody that is a garage floor prep guy to come out and spend a couple thousand, three thousand dollars and go for it.
- 16:09Don Armstrong: But the paint these days is like two or three thousand dollars a gallon.
- 16:12Jeff Dziekan: Well, depending on the kind of paint you use, a prep, like you said, and the condition of the floor, actually.
- 16:17Jeff Dziekan: We can get into that.
- 16:18Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 16:18Jeff Dziekan: Okay, we'll go for it.
- 16:19Jeff Dziekan: All right.
- 16:20Jeff Dziekan: Well, uh the main types of garage floor coatings are epoxy, polyurethane, polyurea, polyaspartic, and uh poly uh polycuramine.
- 16:28Jeff Dziekan: I know this way.
- 16:29Jeff Dziekan: Okay, that way.
- 16:30Jeff Dziekan: Uh plus you've got floor paints that every one of them offers different durability, chemical resistance, and application methods, like Don said.
- 16:36Jeff Dziekan: So the national average of epoxy garage floor coatings ranges from 1700 to 30 to 3,500, basically.
- 16:45Jeff Dziekan: Uh but most homeowners pay around 23 to 2500 to have it done.
- 16:50Jeff Dziekan: It depends on how much you want to spend, the of the coating, the size of your floor, and the condition of the concrete and whatever add-ons you want into that.
- 16:58Jeff Dziekan: So here we go.
- 16:59Jeff Dziekan: One of them is epoxy coatings.
- 17:02Jeff Dziekan: It's a two-part resin system and chemically bonds to concrete, forming a hard, durable surface.
- 17:07Jeff Dziekan: It's highly resistant to chemicals, any impacts or abrasions, and makes it ideal for garages with heavy traffic or machinery.
- 17:13Jeff Dziekan: Epoxies come in several forms.
- 17:15Jeff Dziekan: They come in a water base, uh, low, high solid epoxy, and 100% solid epoxy.
- 17:21Jeff Dziekan: So there you go with that one.
- 17:22Jeff Dziekan: The next one we have is a polyurethane coating.
- 17:25Jeff Dziekan: Uh, it's flexible, it's a chemical resistant product, uh, offering a smooth glossy finish.
- 17:30Jeff Dziekan: There's less brittle than epoxy, and can handle temperature fluctuations better.
- 17:35Jeff Dziekan: Uh, polyurethane is often used as a top coat over epoxy to enhance its UV resistance and durability.
- 17:42Jeff Dziekan: Polyurrhea coatings, it's fast curing, it's flexible, it's durable, uh, and its flexibility allows it to stretch without cracking, making it resistant to temperature changes and heavy wear.
- 17:53Jeff Dziekan: Polyurrhea is ideal for high traffic areas, requires quick application due to its rapid curing time.
- 18:00Jeff Dziekan: So if you're using it, you gotta be quick with this, or it's gonna kind of uh bugger up what you're trying to do.
- 18:07Jeff Dziekan: Uh polyparas uh polyasparic coatings uh is a modified version of a polyurrhe, similar durability and flexibility and improved UV resistance.
- 18:18Jeff Dziekan: It also cures quickly, allowing for minimal downtime, which is useful for chemical uh for commercial and busy residential garages, sort of like what we did with uh uh Mr.
- 18:27Jeff Dziekan: Moody there.
- 18:28Jeff Dziekan: Uh polycuramine coatings combines benefits of polyuria and epoxy, offering a self-leveling, self-leveling, highly durable coating that can often be applied in a single coat, which is very very good because you don't want to spend a lot of time out there.
- 18:43Jeff Dziekan: It provides excellent chemical and abrasion resistance and is suitable for the DIY or professional application.
- 18:50Jeff Dziekan: Now, things to consider the key points of this is the durability.
- 18:53Jeff Dziekan: Is it resistance to wear?
- 18:55Jeff Dziekan: Uh, application, is it easy to install, cure time, number of coats you got to put down, maintenance, cleaning requirements.
- 19:02Jeff Dziekan: Do you spill something on there, you gotta hurry up and get it off there?
- 19:04Jeff Dziekan: The upkeep, the cost.
- 19:06Jeff Dziekan: Now, the cost again is size, what you want to do, you want certain uh accents put into the coating.
- 19:12Jeff Dziekan: Those are all cost factors.
- 19:13Jeff Dziekan: And then, of course, the lifespan, how long will it last?
- 19:16Jeff Dziekan: So those are things to consider.
- 19:19Don Armstrong: My ex experience with that is uh paint.
- 19:22Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, you could be.
- 19:25Don Armstrong: Um, it was relatively um well, it it was cost effective for me, but there was a lot of prep involved, and you gotta put down, you know, a base coat and do this la la la la.
- 19:37Don Armstrong: Well, it just so happened that I lucked into it and did okay.
- 19:41Don Armstrong: And it took a whole week.
- 19:43Don Armstrong: You know, you gotta let it cure, you gotta let it breathe.
- 19:46Jeff Dziekan: All of that.
- 19:47Jeff Dziekan: The prep, you gotta scrub it with a broom and all of that.
- 19:49Jeff Dziekan: Oh yeah.
- 19:49Jeff Dziekan: Oh, yeah.
- 19:50Don Armstrong: And those chemicals alone will kill you.
- 19:52Don Armstrong: And then you have to etch it.
- 19:53Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:54Don Armstrong: Etch it.
- 19:54Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 19:55Don Armstrong: And uh that was a process that I didn't know anything about, but I learned pretty quickly.
- 19:59Don Armstrong: It just roughs it up, and then you that's what it sticks.
- 20:01Don Armstrong: It opens the pores of the concrete.
- 20:03Don Armstrong: It's a whole thing.
- 20:05Don Armstrong: And uh so I lucked out on one.
- 20:07Don Armstrong: The other one, I did the exact same thing.
- 20:10Don Armstrong: It was different kind of paint, same color, but uh I didn't let it cure enough.
- 20:15Don Armstrong: And uh the first car that went in there, the paint stuck to the tires.
- 20:21Don Armstrong: Pulled it right up off the floor.
- 20:23Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, well, you could go to like a you could go to a paint place.
- 20:25Jeff Dziekan: You can go to your local hardware store and buy a garage.
- 20:28Jeff Dziekan: A gallon?
- 20:28Jeff Dziekan: Five gallon.
- 20:30Don Armstrong: Well, you can buy five.
- 20:31Jeff Dziekan: You can.
- 20:31Don Armstrong: But I bought it in the one gallon, and it took two gallons to do the the garage regular two-car garage floor.
- 20:38Don Armstrong: And uh it was now it's up to$200 a gallon.
- 20:41Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, well, like I said,$3,500 to have somebody do it, and you know, it's professionally done, but you've got to be out of your garage for a few days.
- 20:47Jeff Dziekan: It's not like you put it down, and in two hours you get you're done.
- 20:49Jeff Dziekan: Well, then that's the other thing.
- 20:50Don Armstrong: So you've got all your junk in the garage and all of the tool boxes and all of that stuff.
- 20:56Don Armstrong: Where are you gonna put it?
- 20:57Don Armstrong: Well, you know where I put it?
- 20:58Don Armstrong: Front porch.
- 21:00Jeff Dziekan: You take the transmission out of the garage, you put it in the bathtub.
- 21:02Don Armstrong: Well, there's that.
- 21:03Don Armstrong: Yes, I I've done all of those things.
- 21:05Don Armstrong: You know, it's it's it's a process.
- 21:08Jeff Dziekan: It is, and they look nice, don't get me wrong.
- 21:09Jeff Dziekan: I had a neighbor that did it.
- 21:10Jeff Dziekan: You can buy the gray stuff to make it look like a real concrete and all that, but you got cracks, you got divots, you got chips, you got stuff that come off of there.
- 21:17Mike Marrs: All that your house settles exactly.
- 21:20Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 21:20Don Armstrong: Well, if you know, if if the if the garage floor is cracked, might want to get that fixed first.
- 21:25Don Armstrong: Yeah, there's that you can fill it in with something.
- 21:27Mike Marrs: Then you got to keep it fixed.
- 21:29Mike Marrs: That's the problem.
- 21:30Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 21:30Don Armstrong: And let the rest of the house just go ahead and sink and have the bricks fall off the side of it.
- 21:34Jeff Dziekan: But by God, the garage will be pretty pretty floor.
- 21:38Mike Marrs: All right, time now for driving destinations, Mr.
- 21:40Mike Marrs: Morris.
- 21:41Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 21:42Mike Marrs: Got a few things here that we thought maybe that uh some areas that may not have quite noticed, or you may have missed them.
- 21:50Mike Marrs: First one up is going to be Belleville and Newman's Castle.
- 21:53Mike Marrs: Now, this is uh one of those places that you may not believe that this is really here destination, it's an easy small town.
- 22:00Mike Marrs: Drive, oh, it's a small town and it's an easy drive.
- 22:03Mike Marrs: But there is where you're going to find Newman's Castle.
- 22:06Mike Marrs: And this gives it a real centerpiece.
- 22:08Mike Marrs: Uh, it's got a drawbridge, it's got a moat, a courtyard, and you can even take guided tours.
- 22:13Mike Marrs: And of course, you can go downtown Belleville and have lunch and have a complete family day trip out of it.
- 22:18Mike Marrs: And it's only about an hour and 15 minutes away.
- 22:20Mike Marrs: But the castle is what will get your attention when you get there.
- 22:24Mike Marrs: Uh, the second thing is going to be San Felipe de Austin.
- 22:28Mike Marrs: That's my Spanish accent there.
- 22:30Mike Marrs: This is one of the favorite places you can go to because it's close, it's got a relaxed day, and it's got a story a lot of Houston families may not know, particularly if you're new to the Houston area.
- 22:40Mike Marrs: It preserves Stephen F.
- 22:42Mike Marrs: Austin's original Texas colony.
- 22:44Mike Marrs: It's got a visitor center in it, it's got exhibits, and it's got a reconstructed town site.
- 22:49Mike Marrs: This is kind of like they tried to make it like it used to be.
- 22:52Mike Marrs: So uh you can combine it with a trip to Belleville or even Seely for lunch and browsing and uh kind of make it more than just a quick stop to go by and see what's going on because they do have a lot of activities, a lot of people doing things there that you can watch to see how they did it back in the day.
- 23:10Mike Marrs: Then, if another place you can do is head east towards the Trinity River, uh you get a combination of Texas street history and the Gulf Coast scenery.
- 23:18Mike Marrs: Fort Anouac was important in the early roles leading up to the Texas Revolution.
- 23:23Mike Marrs: Now, this is where the park now is, offers a fishing and birding pier.
- 23:27Mike Marrs: It's got natural areas and views overlooking the water.
- 23:30Mike Marrs: Now, this is a less obvious Houston destination, and it fits kind of the idea that you're looking for someplace new, you want someplace to go, but you don't want to go too far, but spend the day and check the schedule because they do have a lot of activities going on here during the year as well.
- 23:45Mike Marrs: Then if you want to go a little further over towards East Texas, go to the Big Thicket Natural Preserve.
- 23:52Mike Marrs: Now, this is you're really going to get out of the Houston traffic.
- 23:55Mike Marrs: You're going to get in the East Texas Forest because uh you get over near Coont.
- 24:00Mike Marrs: Now, this is where you're going to find it.
- 24:01Mike Marrs: It's a small town, uh, wide spot in the road.
- 24:04Mike Marrs: Best I remember, it's got two red lights now.
- 24:06Mike Marrs: And uh, but they've got a lot of areas that go out through the ecosystems, and the visitor center is where you can really choose where you want to go because they've got so many choices.
- 24:15Mike Marrs: They've got junior ranger program that's set up for their kids.
- 24:18Mike Marrs: So if you're close enough that you can make regular trips out here and really get involved and get away from the wide or the the concrete world to get out into the woods.
- 24:29Mike Marrs: The next place we've got on it, it would be the San Jacinto Battleground and the Lynchburg Ferry.
- 24:35Mike Marrs: Now, if you're in Houston, it's hard, you know, you're bound to have heard about it, but still, it's a neat place to go out to because they've got the battlefield, they got the museum.
- 24:44Mike Marrs: You can take uh the Lynchburg Ferry still run.
- 24:49Don Armstrong: Guys, yes, it does.
- 24:51Don Armstrong: It's the oldest running ferry in the state of Texas.
- 24:54Mike Marrs: Well, I thought I'd read someplace that it stopped, but I've got to be.
- 25:03Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 25:03Mike Marrs: So you can go out here, you can get uh Texas history, you get ships, industry.
- 25:08Mike Marrs: Uh unfortunately they moved the battleship Texas down to Galveston, but it was a neat combination whenever it was there.
- 25:14Mike Marrs: So there's uh a lot of things to go out here and see.
- 25:16Mike Marrs: It's a pretty good-sized area that you can actually drive through a lot of it to see it.
- 25:21Mike Marrs: Then you can go on the last one, go up to West Columbia, Varner Hogg Plantation.
- 25:26Mike Marrs: Now, I heard about this whenever I first came back, moved down here to Texas, and there was we're weird stories, but it's uh another historic place, and you can go to the Varner Hogg Plantation.
- 25:37Mike Marrs: Now, he was a governor of Texas.
- 25:40Mike Marrs: This plantation's 200 years old, and you got a lot of ranching and oil, and you can go through the historic property and see all the historic aspects of it.
- 25:49Mike Marrs: Now, it's uh good for people with older children because there's a lot of things that they can read and see and do over in Brazilia County.
- 25:56Mike Marrs: And one thing I wanted to mention whenever I came down here, people were telling me about this place, and they were telling me that uh James Hogg, the governor, named his two children.
- 26:06Mike Marrs: One of them he named Ima Hog, and the other one was Eurahog.
- 26:09Mike Marrs: That's right.
- 26:10Mike Marrs: And and I will say I've done the research, and Europe was not a real thing.
- 26:14Mike Marrs: Ima was, poor girl.
- 26:16Jeff Dziekan: Ima was, yeah.
- 26:16Mike Marrs: Yeah, if they did that today, she would be in big trouble.
- 26:21Mike Marrs: Anyway, that's the place.
- 26:23Don Armstrong: She's got a beautiful mansion here in Houston.
- 26:24Don Armstrong: That's something else to uh check out as well.
- 26:27Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 26:27Don Armstrong: Perfect.
- 26:28Don Armstrong: All right stuff.
- 26:29Don Armstrong: Thank you, sir.
- 26:30Don Armstrong: And uh time now to take another break.
