- 2:43In local news, Harvard University has decided its leaders will refrain from making official
- 2:49statements on social or political issues unless they directly impact the university's core
- 2:55functions.
- 2:57This new policy, endorsed by the Harvard Corporation, aims to maintain focus on academic freedom
- 3:03and open research.
- 3:06The change follows recent campus tensions and emphasizes that university leaders should
- 3:11only speak on topics within their institutional expertise.
- 3:16This move seeks to foster a more inclusive environment and clear communication within
- 3:21the community.
- 3:27Now on to sports.
- 3:29The NFL is set to enhance its officiating with new technology.
- 3:34An electronic system for measuring first downs will be tested in preseason games and might
- 3:40be used in regular season games soon.
- 3:44Additionally, instant replay will play a larger role in officiating, helping officials with
- 3:49roughing the passer, intentional grounding, and late hits out of bounds.
- 3:55While a sky judge system remains off the table, these steps aim to improve accuracy and efficiency
- 4:01in officiating, addressing past challenges and fostering fairer gameplay.
- 4:08In local sports, the Red Sox at home lost to the Tigers 8-4.
- 4:15It was their first Sunday loss of the season.
- 4:18Tonight, the Sox are off and await the arrival of the Atlanta Braves for a quick two-game
- 4:24series starting Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
- 4:30And top news, in more news coming out of Cambridge.
- 4:35Harvard University, which already has nearly $50 billion in cash reserves, has just received
- 4:41a $20 million donation from investor Joseph Bay and his wife, novelist Janice Lee.
- 4:50This gift, intended for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, comes just before alumni reunion
- 4:55celebrations.
- 4:56Bay, a new member of Harvard's governing board, and Lee aim to support financial aid
- 5:03and the humanities.
- 5:06This significant donation follows a period of decreased contributions after the October
- 5:11Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent controversy over Harvard's response to anti-Semitism.
- 5:18The couple, both 1994 graduates, have contributed $140 million to Harvard over the years.
- 5:28Interesting.
- 5:30In business news, Skydance Media has revised its offer to acquire Sherry Redstone's,
- 5:38National Amusements, and merge with Paramount Global, proposing to buy non-voting Paramount
- 5:43shares at about $15 each, at 26% premium.
- 5:49The deal, still under negotiation, involves Skydance and its backers contributing funds
- 5:54to buy out National Amusements and inject cash into Paramount, aiding debt reduction.
- 6:01The deal follows opposition from non-voting shareholders and Paramount's recent CDO departure.
- 6:08This transaction would mark a significant shift for Paramount, which has been controlled
- 6:12by the Redstone family for decades.
- 6:16In crypto movement, Bitcoin is just under $68,000.
- 6:21Ethereum is nearing $3,800.
- 6:25And Solana is $163.
- 6:30Moving on to a more local vibe.
- 6:32In our community spotlight on health and wellness, we are working with a national Pilates studio
- 6:39to bring you some free classes, so listen up.
- 6:43Check out Club Pilates with several locations in the Boston area.

- 7:07Kingham, Brookline, and Framingham.
- 7:10Just be sure to tell them, Sunny Morning sent you by.
- 7:15And now, back to the show.
- 7:18Let's talk tech.
- 7:20Alexander Graham Bell once challenged the scientific community to measure a smell.
- 7:26Today, advances in machine olfaction are meeting this challenge, using sensors and machine
- 7:33learning to identify and interpret odors.
- 7:37Despite the complexity of human smell with 400 types of receptor cells, researchers have
- 7:43made significant progress.
- 7:46Initiatives like the Dream Olfaction Prediction Challenge and the Perfume Project have expanded
- 7:52datasets enabling breakthroughs with deep learning models.
- 7:57These developments promise applications in personalized fragrances, better insect repellents,
- 8:03disease detection, and enhanced augmented reality, heralding a bright future for digitized
- 8:08smell technology.
- 8:10And in entertainment news, Netflix's new release, Hitman, starring Glenn Powell, opened
- 8:20in a few theaters before its streaming debut on June 7th.
- 8:25Despite Netflix's efforts to market these limited theatrical releases, the real buzz
- 8:30comes from streaming.
- 8:32While Netflix promotes its movies as being in theaters, the impact is minimal compared
- 8:38to traditional studio releases.
- 8:41Critics argue this strategy stifles potential theatrical hits and diminishes movie culture,
- 8:47emphasizing the need for mid-level successes to sustain the industry.
- 8:52Well, alrighty folks, it's time for the quote of the day.
- 8:58And today, our quote comes from the aeronautical engineer, astronaut, and first American to
- 9:04walk in space, Ed White.
- 9:07He said,
- 9:08A good man's life is never quite ended.
- 9:13Something of it always remains to touch and illuminate others' lives.
- 9:19And that's a wrap for this morning.
