Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm thirty, I'm the drummer of Vans and yeah, today
- 0:04Speaker 1: we're going to talk about Perpetual Selection, our full length
- 0:07Speaker 1: debut LP. Yeah. So super excited to be on this
- 0:13Speaker 1: show with you, Chris and yeah, it's a pleasure and.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Honor fantasy mate. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Oh worries as you say, then, So released your debut album,
- 0:22Speaker 3: Perpetual Selection a couple of weeks ago now back on
- 0:25Speaker 3: March at that age.
- 0:26Speaker 2: So how's the early reception been for it?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Man? Surprisingly, up to now, like, it's been really good. Surprisingly,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and again we always keep our expectations low as we
- 0:39Speaker 1: always do, but yeah, man, there it's been really positive.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And like just ongoing support we get from the local
- 0:49Speaker 1: Perth scene as well has been amazing. So yeah, appreciate
- 0:54Speaker 1: big shout out to all the fans and followers, and
- 0:57Speaker 1: appreciate the promoters as well, Andrew and Brendan as well
- 1:02Speaker 1: from Pornography for like blowing this thing up as well,
- 1:05Speaker 1: along with Dicey as well. So prossly there's legends and yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: so so good man. We've only got like two negative
- 1:12Speaker 1: reviews so far, but I can tell they're just not
- 1:17Speaker 1: the extreme kind of crowd, but i't wan't to go
- 1:20Speaker 1: off any names.
- 1:24Speaker 3: So that's an emerging band, bro, Like, how do you
- 1:26Speaker 3: measure the success of an album these days?
- 1:28Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Is it online? Streams? Is it comments? Is it?
- 1:32Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:33Speaker 2: How do you measure it? Yeah?
- 1:34Speaker 1: A bit of everything, hey, a bit of everything? I
- 1:37Speaker 1: would say definitely. The streaming numbers show that as well.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I haven't checked again, but Jesse is usually in charge
- 1:47Speaker 1: of like checking the stats, wowing the stats to me
- 1:49Speaker 1: and things like that. He's a bit of the operations
- 1:53Speaker 1: daddy in the van. So yeah, we've all kind of
- 1:55Speaker 1: got our roles. I just kind of run around, run
- 1:58Speaker 1: my mouse to do all the marketing. I'm the ideas guys,
- 2:01Speaker 1: so yeah. Yeah, looks after all the finances and cash
- 2:07Speaker 1: follow of the band. So yeah. But to answer your question, man,
- 2:10Speaker 1: like so far so good, Hey, Like I think the
- 2:14Speaker 1: views are still going up as well on YouTube and man,
- 2:19Speaker 1: just the cross sharing in general. That's how we kind
- 2:22Speaker 1: of know like we've done something right. Yeah, we didn't
- 2:26Speaker 1: think like we'd be getting like shares here and there
- 2:29Speaker 1: and whatnot, but like, so far, so good, man, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: our inbox is still coming and hot. There's like people
- 2:35Speaker 1: who want to sit down and how to talk to us.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So yeah, it's I say, can it dive a bit
- 2:41Speaker 3: deeper into perpetual selection for us from reviewsical point of
- 2:44Speaker 3: view and tell us what you're going for?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I mean the whole concept of the album,
- 2:51Speaker 1: like we want to explore the darker side of humanity
- 2:54Speaker 1: and just where we're heading in general, like you see
- 2:57Speaker 1: all the things unfolding before our eyes and just around us.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So you know, compared to our Gravemind era, our first EP,
- 3:06Speaker 1: like we sort of like touched on that like more
- 3:09Speaker 1: traditional euro mellow death sound. I would say, like the
- 3:13Speaker 1: kind of the Gothenberg rioffs, the kind of like early
- 3:17Speaker 1: Botoms sort of sound, and I'm mixed with like the
- 3:20Speaker 1: Dahliest sort of nuance. But then I think with this album,
- 3:23Speaker 1: because we wanted to explore more into that like core
- 3:26Speaker 1: narrative about like collapse and rebirth and just where the
- 3:29Speaker 1: society is heading in general. We wanted something more extreme,
- 3:33Speaker 1: more aggressive, and the three of us, jesse Chen and myself,
- 3:40Speaker 1: we all love black metal very much like we love
- 3:44Speaker 1: the early Demi Borg year, the Belfer Belfer Goal sort
- 3:48Speaker 1: of sound, the early like Behemoth riffs, Like I'm talking
- 3:52Speaker 1: like Evan Gallian era up to like the Demi God right,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'll do Satanists. There's a bit of that like ambiance
- 3:58Speaker 1: going on as well and some of the s FX.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But yeah, because of that coordinarrative, we just wanted to
- 4:04Speaker 1: kind of push out more of our like darkness and
- 4:08Speaker 1: aggression more into this record and tapping into more of
- 4:11Speaker 1: our like modern influence as well. So like you probably
- 4:14Speaker 1: hear a bit of like shadow of intent, the kind
- 4:18Speaker 1: of like modern American death metal going on in there,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and a bit of that wawn Ashore black and death
- 4:24Speaker 1: course sort of vibe going in. But yeah, all in
- 4:26Speaker 1: all the course out and still mellow death and just
- 4:29Speaker 1: kind of like blending it in more with like modern influences.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I would say, yeah, absolute, And I noticed there's no
- 4:35Speaker 3: someone there either called perpetual selection, which suggests that it
- 4:38Speaker 3: must have a bit deeper.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Significant Yeah, so pretty much what I just touched on. Hey,
- 4:44Speaker 1: it's sort of like because at one point, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: a lot of us in metal heads like way more
- 4:50Speaker 1: sensitive than you know, and it's why we do these things,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and that's why we play death. It's one of these
- 4:58Speaker 1: thoughts you have at three am at night when you're like, crap,
- 5:02Speaker 1: the world's heading that way, So what's the fucking point?
- 5:05Speaker 1: Like you could have been down in grief and stuff,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but you know, I realized we stopped making art. Then
- 5:14Speaker 1: the people at the top, the bad guys winning at
- 5:16Speaker 1: the top, are just perpetuating our suffering. Hence that kind
- 5:20Speaker 1: of thought came through, and it's like it's like it's
- 5:24Speaker 1: not natural selection anymore, it's like perpetual selection. It's like, yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 1: kind of like holding the mirror to everything that's going on.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That's what this album is. It's a mirror and a
- 5:34Speaker 1: hammer to the reality around us. Yes, we now.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Listening to music.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Like one thing that sort of stands out to me
- 5:42Speaker 3: anyway is like it's got a real cinematic type feel
- 5:45Speaker 3: as well as the heaviness that you've got in there.
- 5:47Speaker 3: So how difficult does it to blend that cinematic sort
- 5:52Speaker 3: of element in through music like yours?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Oh look, man, I think there's not really one answer
- 6:01Speaker 1: for that, because everything just kind of happened as it went,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Like everything just kind of flowed on, like from concept
- 6:09Speaker 1: it's song to like having the song finish and then
- 6:14Speaker 1: kind of blowing it out of proportion was sort of
- 6:17Speaker 1: unintentional as well. But I think the three of us,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and particularly myself being a being a creative professional, like
- 6:25Speaker 1: I've worked in the brand and advertising space professionally like
- 6:29Speaker 1: all my life, so I kind of have that brain
- 6:31Speaker 1: where it's like, hey, it's more than just doing the music.
- 6:34Speaker 1: It's kind of like put the visuals and you know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: it's at that point you're sort of like building a brand.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So it all kind of flowed naturally, like I kind
- 6:46Speaker 1: of guided the boys through it. But then also most importantly,
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's like our chemistry together that's what matters most, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's what kind of like brings everybody to the tables
- 6:55Speaker 1: of One Man's Show. And then also like working with
- 7:00Speaker 1: videographer Elliott Charleston, his a legend, like he's got a
- 7:04Speaker 1: good creative brain as well, so he added on top
- 7:07Speaker 1: of our ideas and kind of like wanted to do
- 7:09Speaker 1: something more cinematic with the video clips, and you know,
- 7:13Speaker 1: he went through our lyrics and then he kind of said, hey,
- 7:16Speaker 1: these songs would actually work well visually and like kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of tying together. Like he mentioned like we're not going
- 7:22Speaker 1: to directly show you the monsters and stuff like that,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but he had ideas of like, you know, with everything
- 7:28Speaker 1: going on, like, hey, let's get a bunch of kids
- 7:30Speaker 1: trying to survive and to post a apocalyptic dystopian sort
- 7:34Speaker 1: of fusion. And I was like, yeah, that's a fucking
- 7:35Speaker 1: great idea. Sorry, Yeah, man, I think it's just everybody
- 7:39Speaker 1: on board and just have it, putting all the creative
- 7:42Speaker 1: brains in one little bubble and just kind of let
- 7:45Speaker 1: it do what it needed to do. That's how we
- 7:47Speaker 1: got there. And yeah, wouldn't I wouldn't say it's hard
- 7:51Speaker 1: trying to give that cinematicness to everything. But there's a
- 7:55Speaker 1: lot of steps. It's just a lot of planning and
- 7:57Speaker 1: like thinking and just brainstorming.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Right, We're sort of touched on this before, Broy, But
- 8:03Speaker 3: your music blends the melodic death metal with modern American
- 8:06Speaker 3: death metal.
- 8:07Speaker 2: There's an early euro death metal there as well.
- 8:09Speaker 3: So how do you find the balance between all that
- 8:12Speaker 3: in the creative process?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Like, how do you know when you're going too far
- 8:15Speaker 2: in one diuration?
- 8:18Speaker 1: That is a very good question. We never really thought
- 8:22Speaker 1: about it, but look, I think the three of us
- 8:28Speaker 1: kind of wanted to create a world of its own
- 8:31Speaker 1: for each song, and I think knowing the narrative knowing
- 8:35Speaker 1: what the song is going to represent kind of drove
- 8:39Speaker 1: the other factors musical factors in there, and how we
- 8:41Speaker 1: wanted like one thing more rather than the rest and
- 8:45Speaker 1: kind of like not overpowering each other the musical elements on.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I think that's where it all comes wrong. I think
- 8:51Speaker 1: that the narrative really drives with a song is structured
- 8:54Speaker 1: and how the production is done.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Now you've got an album launch show and home shout
- 9:00Speaker 3: of Birth this Friday, March of twenty seventh at The
- 9:03Speaker 3: Milk Bar with Alisa king Zog and crowdbone Mates.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So tell us about that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Shaw, Yeah, so yeah, that's the album launch celebration. We've
- 9:13Speaker 1: got our boys, our brothers from Alisair co headlining with us,
- 9:17Speaker 1: which is pretaking awesome. We love those guys, like always
- 9:21Speaker 1: a good time playing with them. And yeah, it's hosted
- 9:25Speaker 1: by Honography Crunch Entertainment, which Andrew runs and Brendan from
- 9:30Speaker 1: All This Hills. He's kind of like his co partner
- 9:35Speaker 1: as well, So like, yeah, they're really just kind of
- 9:38Speaker 1: came down and helped us out and we've always got
- 9:41Speaker 1: like a good relationship with them, so like when they
- 9:43Speaker 1: heard about this, they were like, hey, let's blow this
- 9:46Speaker 1: hornography out. It's not like your tyfficult local minography. But yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 1: then again I said, like with Dicey kind of supporting
- 9:53Speaker 1: us as well, we kind of made that happen with
- 9:56Speaker 1: honography guys, And yeah, dude, I think it's going to
- 10:00Speaker 1: be fun, and like we just want to kind of
- 10:02Speaker 1: create a safe space and a world of each song
- 10:06Speaker 1: physically live there and have people tap into, enjoy themselves,
- 10:10Speaker 1: get loose and yeah, say hello and come make some
- 10:14Speaker 1: new friends.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Nice And where can people go to get to gets
- 10:18Speaker 3: to the show or to get a copy of the
- 10:19Speaker 3: album Sticks?
