- 0:07On December 3rd, 1978, the Philadelphia Eagles visited the Minnesota Vikings at Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota for Week 14 of the 1978 NFL regular season.
- 0:18The Eagles entered the game with an 8-5 record under head coach Dick Vermeel and second year quarterback Ron Jaworski.
- 0:24The Vikings had seven wins led by head coach Bud Grant and quarterback Fran Tarkenton who was in the final year of his career.
- 0:31This is the local Philadelphia radio broadcast featuring announcers Meryl Reese and Jim Barniak.
- 0:37Kicking off with the Vikings for the Eagles is Mike Michelle. Deep for the Vikings to the near side is Kevin Miller. In the middle is Miller and to the near side is Harry Washington. So it is Washington and Kevin Miller.
- 0:53Just to see if he approaches the ball. Kicking is very often a problem on a day like today. Mike Michelle's been kicking up and taking over in that spot where Nick Mikkemeyer has been doing very well.
- 1:09Kevin Miller deep. The crowd is ready here at Bloomington for this big game. Michelle approaches the ball.
- 1:16He hits it. It is high and moving over and taking it is Kevin Miller. He's at the 20. Up to the 25.
- 1:2230. Across the 35 and up to the 37 yard line. Kevin Miller. Michelle himself makes the stop up at the 37 yard line.
- 1:3224 yard return by Kevin Miller. So right away the Vikings get good field position.
- 1:37Not a real good kickoff. He's Mike Michelle who is confronted with some very tough winds here.
- 1:41Swirling winds. This stadium is wide open in some spots and in other spots of course it has a double tiered and side tiered bleaker.
- 1:47So very unpredictable wind.
- 1:49First to 10 for the Vikings as Parkinson lines them up. He splits his wide receivers.
- 1:54Forming the long running back as he drops the throw in first down.
- 1:57Fires to the near side. Complete to Amad Rashad up and out of bounds here midfield.
- 2:02It's Rashad who takes it inbound at the 50 and goes out at the eagle 49.
- 2:07A 14 yard pick up on first down and Parkinson went right to the air.
- 2:11Right to the air and I'm sure the Vikings would like nothing more than to get some points on the board in a hurry and try and force the Eagles to play catch up in these conditions.
- 2:18The Vikings are at their best when they've got a couple of touchdown lead on you and they can go put that defense to work.
- 2:24This time Parkinson splits the wide receivers. He sets his running back from the eye.
- 2:29The lead back is Ricky Young. Parkinson rolling to his right.
- 2:32Stopping. Looking. Fires over the middle.
- 2:35It's complete to Rashad and Rashad goes down close to the eagle 20.
- 2:41Parkinson again to Rashad and Rashad caught the ball at the 25 and leaned forward to the 22 before he was hit by Randy Logan and John Sheriff.
- 2:50A 26 yard gain and a good catch right there by Rashad.
- 2:54He was covered. There were three Eagles in the area there and Rashad just went up and got the football. Great effort.
- 3:00So Parkinson has the Vikings on the move once again.
- 3:03Parkinson in his 18th year his best passing season. This time it's a handoff.
- 3:07Inside it goes to Chuck Foreman who comes down close to the 20 yard line before the Eagles stop him.
- 3:13Charlie Johnson was right there to put the shoulder to Chuck Foreman.
- 3:16A pick up of very little maybe a yard and a half or two on the carry but that's about all.
- 3:21Interesting to note on that last forward pass.
- 3:24Fremtarkenton scrambling rolling out a little bit to the right had the option of running a plenty of clear field and elected not to do it.
- 3:29Second down and a long seven. The ball of the Eagles 20 yard line.
- 3:33This time Parkinson sets both wide receivers left.
- 3:36He gives off inside and taking the handoff is Ricky Young coming down close to the 15 yard line before Frank Lamantour makes the stop.
- 3:44So we saw Fremtarkenton open up with two successful passing plays both to Ahmad Rashad.
- 3:50They have a gain of 14 yards one for 26 yards and then a couple of running plays as they get closer and closer to the Eagle goal line.
- 3:57That'll be a third down at about three. The ball is just outside the 15 yard line.
- 4:02Fremtarkenton sets both wide receivers to the near side. Sammy White in the slot.
- 4:07Outside of him is Rashad. The back's in an open set.
- 4:10As Fremtarkenton gives to Chuck Foreman who tries to turn the far quarter.
- 4:13He meets Overland comes across the 10. He has a Viking first down.
- 4:18Bill Berge finally runs him out of bounds but he leaps over one man and puts it inside the 10 down to the nine.
- 4:25And the Vikings drive continues if they have a first and go to go at the Eagle nine.
- 4:30Good block right there by the veteran right tackle Ron Yarie.
- 4:34He really hit somebody and Foreman has some room to go around that right corner and leaps over one man.
- 4:39Bobby Lee Howard was on the corner there and Yarie just put him right into the ground and enabled Foreman to leap over the back straight.
- 4:46Bobby Lee for the big game.
- 4:48So it's first and go for the Vikings as Fremtarkenton lines them up. Foreman goes in motion to the far side.
- 4:53Fremtarkenton in a flat pass to Sammy White at the 10 and he's lifted and thrown down at the six by Herman Edwards who played that play to perfection.
- 5:01There was motion as Fremtarkenton sent Chuck Foreman to that far side and then threw right in the flat to Sammy White who still picked up four yards on the play.
- 5:10But Herman Edwards still read it properly and put him down.
- 5:13They tried a little flanker screen there and you're right Herman Edwards did a good job.
- 5:16He had to fight off a blocker and then get in there and make the hit.
- 5:19Bikes did get three yards or four yards.
- 5:21Vikings got close a week ago a couple of times against the Packers of that Green Bay defense.
- 5:26Hell let's see if the Eagles can do the same on second down play action by Fremtarkenton.
- 5:31Lost the pass in the air in and out of the hands. Incomplete.
- 5:34Intended for Ricky Young over on the far side.
- 5:37Parkinson had him. He had beaten the man Randy Logan. The ball went in and out of his hands.
- 5:43The Vikings had all but six points right there but Ricky Young could not hold on.
- 5:47Good play action. Excellent execution by Francis.
- 5:51And some poor defense by the Eagles. You've got to stay with Ricky Young every place he goes.
- 5:55He has caught 74 passes coming into this game. You know Tarkin and it goes with him a great deal.
- 5:59And that time nobody picked Ricky Young up and how he caught that ball over six.
- 6:03Parkinson had the ball in his hand.
- 6:06At the third down and go to go. They're at the five yard line.
- 6:09Just one running back. That's Chuck Foreman. Everybody else split.
- 6:12Tarkin, dropping, hooking, going to the deep corner. Touchdown Sammy White.
- 6:19Parkinson on a bit of play action dropped straight back and found Sammy White a lower end of the end zone
- 6:25on the far corner from Minnesota touchdown. The Vikings are on the board.
- 6:29Sammy White ran a post corner that time. Cut toward the goal post and then took it back outside toward the corner.
- 6:34The Eagles were in their nickel defense and John Jarrow was reading that but was in bad position.
- 6:39Sammy White had the outside all to himself and Tarkin had laid it right in there.
- 6:43And now Rick Danmeyer will try to make it seven to nothing if he lines up for the extra points.
- 6:47The ball is spotted. It's up and it's good.
- 6:51So we have a timeout on the field with the score. The Vikings seven, the Eagles nothing.
- 6:56Giamotta to 37 going Canfield.
- 7:04We're less than three minutes into this football game and the Vikings are leading the Eagles seven to nothing.
- 7:08Grant Parkinson made it actually look easy that time as he took them down to the field with a couple of great passes
- 7:13and a few running plays that did not amount to much but he set it up well and eventually passed the Sammy White to the score.
- 7:19Now Danmeyer kicks off. Canfield to the far side for the Eagles.
- 7:22Giamotta to the near side. The kickoff is high and is taken by Giamotta at the five, ten, fifteen, twenty.
- 7:28How does he get to 25? Pins to the 26th.
- 7:31And down under a rush of purple shirts goes Louis Giamotta.
- 7:36Making the tackle for the Vikings was Tom Hannon.
- 7:39So now let's see what the Eagles can do with 21-yard kickoff return by Louis Giamotta.
- 7:43One of the Eagles' biggest problems this year has been putting points on the scoreboard in the first quarter.
- 7:48Collectively throughout the first 13 games they have scored just 14 first quarter points.
- 7:53Now they're behind seven to nothing already.
- 7:56Jaworski lines them up and he splits his running back.
- 7:59Mike Hogan to the near side. Wilbur Montgomery to the far side.
- 8:02The wide receivers are split.
- 8:04Charlie Smith to the near side. Tom Hagan to the far side.
- 8:07Jaworski on a long count on first down.
- 8:09He turns inside Wilbur Montgomery who comes across the 30, up to the 35, to the 36.
- 8:14Wilbur Montgomery on a good burst right there before he is stopped by Phil Wise.
- 8:18Right up the middle of that Viking defense and that Viking forward wall ranks 14th against the rush in the NFC.
- 8:24Everybody it seems has been running on them and running right up the middle.
- 8:27Some very good blocks right there by Guy Morris and Woody Peoples.
- 8:30Wilbur's was off and going for an eight-yard gain.
- 8:32Second down on two is this time Jaworski hits both wide receivers to the far side.
- 8:36Carl Michael in the slot. Outside of him is Charlie Smith.
- 8:40Jaworski hands off inside. Big hole for Mike Hogan.
- 8:43As he comes right up the middle and picks up yardage to the 44-yard line before he is stopped by Tom Hagan.
- 8:49Good opening block by Guy Morris and Tom Hagan and the Eagles' second consecutive eight-yard gain.
- 8:55Nothing fancy on that play at all. Just a straight hand off to Mike Hogan and he ran right into daylight.
- 9:00Eight yards of burst for the Eagles' opening two offensive plays.
- 9:04This time they split the wide receivers.
- 9:06The ball is at the Eagles' 44-yard line. 10-53 remaining in the first quarter. Vikings up 7-0.
- 9:11Jaworski on play action.
- 9:13Looks left. Going wrong down the left sideline.
- 9:16Has Carl Michael at the 15-yard line. Touchdown!
- 9:19Jaworski on play action.
- 9:22Has Carl Michael open on the left side. He had beaten his man.
- 9:26He outran Bobby Bryant. Picked the pass right in his gut.
- 9:30And ran the remaining 15 yards of 56-yard touchdown pass.
- 9:34Ron Jaworski to Harold Carl Michael.
- 9:37He's got $100 a point from Pino Le for the Eagles. Fly for Leukemia Fund.
- 9:41Tom Hagan, the free safety there. The only guy with a chance took a slot at the football hoping to knock it down and miss it.
- 9:47And he went sailing right out of bounds. Lost his footing.
- 9:49Howard Carl Michael caught the ball and had nothing but clear sailing.
- 9:52This is still uncharacteristic of the Eagles. 7-7 already here.
- 9:55Alright, here's the extra point. And it's up and it's good.
- 9:58There's a timeout on the field with the score 7-7.
- 10:02We have a 7-7 game here in Bloomington, Minnesota.
- 10:07Kicking off for the Eagles, Mike Michelle. Deep for the Vikings, Kevin Miller.
- 10:11To the middle, Harry Washington to the far side and Robert Miller to the near side.
- 10:19Well, the bomb did it. 56-yard touchdown pass. Ron Jaworski to Harold Carl Michael.
- 10:27Here is the whistle. And here is the kickoff.
- 10:30It is high but it is short. And it is taken by Harry Washington at the 20.
- 10:34Washington to the 25. Up to the 30. And up to the 35-yard line.
- 10:38So again, the Vikings will get decent field position.
- 10:41Again, Mike Michelle kicking into a swirling type wind here and not getting very much on it.
- 10:46The Vikings are again outside their own 30-yard line. Excellent field position for them.
- 10:51That's the thing. You have got to contain them on these kickoff returns.
- 10:54It didn't happen right there the first time they took over their 37-yard line.
- 10:58And Parkinson went to work in the air. And this time they will take over the 35-yard line.
- 11:02A 7-7 game though as Jaworski drops. Perfect strike to Harold Carl Michael.
- 11:07This time Parkinson leads them up again with only one man on the backfield.
- 11:10Playack. He wants the throw. He goes with the bomb down the near side.
- 11:13The Rashad has dropped it. Rashad had it. They are going to throw the flag and call.
- 11:17Pass interference. Pass interference is going to be thrown against Herman Edwards.
- 11:23The ball was in the air and I got the feeling looking at it.
- 11:26And Herman Edwards had hit Rashad. Nothing was called at that moment.
- 11:30Then a second or two later the ball came down, hit Rashad in the hands.
- 11:34And then Herman Edwards clearly hit Rashad.
- 11:36But the pass interference I think Jim will be called actually before the touching of the football.
- 11:40In the air, number 46, defense, first up.
- 11:45Kind of an act of desperation that time by Herman Edwards. He was beaten by Rashad.
- 11:49Rashad had about 5 yards on him and was in position to catch the ball and take it in all the way.
- 11:53Locked the fireworks here early. 39 yard game right there.
- 11:56But the flag went down. It was a late flag.
- 11:59He took his time throwing that flag. He did not throw it actually until the ball had been missed.
- 12:04Right first down for the Vikings there was the Eagle 25.
- 12:06Hand off to Chuck Foreman who comes off right tackle. Picked up maybe two or three yards.
- 12:10Before Carl Harrison and Frank LaMaster makes the stop.
- 12:13But he is close to the Eagle 20.
- 12:15All right here's the scores. Maryland to Los Angeles, Rams 10.
- 12:18And the New York Giants 7 in the second period.
- 12:20Cincinnati Bengals 10, Atlanta 7 in the second period.
- 12:23San Francisco 3, New Orleans nothing in the first period.
- 12:26Miami 6, Washington nothing in the second period.
- 12:29Second down and 6. The Eagles know they have to tighten that pass defense.
- 12:33That is the area that Fran Parkinson is taking advantage of right now.
- 12:36He wants to throw again. Fires to the near side.
- 12:39Complete to Rashad who steps away from one man at the 15 and goes down at the 13.
- 12:43But he has another first down.
- 12:45Rashad, a good job right there. Went up between Herman Edwards and John Sharer.
- 12:49And took the pass that was thrown high.
- 12:51Came down, faked around one man and went forward inside the 15.
- 12:55He has another Viking first down.
- 12:57So we're seeing a lot of movement offensively so far today.
- 13:00And the Eagles knew that very play was coming.
- 13:02Herman Edwards gambled for the interception.
- 13:04Almost got it. The ball was thrown quite high.
- 13:06And Rashad is excellent at going up in the air and coming down with a football.
- 13:09He did score a touchdown in that manner against the Packers last week.
- 13:12Yes he did. 8 yard gain.
- 13:14So it's a first and 10 for the Vikings who are at the Eagle 14.
- 13:17Again it is Foreman below the setback.
- 13:19A pass in the flat.
- 13:21It goes out to Foreman who takes it and dives forward close to the 10 yard line.
- 13:24Foreman comes down and takes that pass in the flat.
- 13:27Took it at the 16 and he moved down to the 11 yard line before Bobby Lee Howard made the stop.
- 13:32But a pick up on the play of about 4 yards.
- 13:37Ball just hit about the 11 yard line.
- 13:40Parkinson putting the ball in the air.
- 13:42People here in Minnesota could not understand why a week ago he tried to run so much.
- 13:46Going into that final moment against the Green Bay Packers.
- 13:50Parkinson has thrown about 22 times and run the ball a lot.
- 13:54But today he is going to the air.
- 13:56He's back. He's looking. Fires over the middle.
- 13:58The pass is complete to Bob Parker at the 10 yard line.
- 14:01But a fly goes back.
- 14:03Fly goes down back at about the 16.
- 14:06Vikings are going to get called for a holding penalty here.
- 14:08That fly costs right into the pocket.
- 14:10Vikings now starting to back up.
- 14:13Parkinson not playing at all much with the run.
- 14:15The footing is very, very slippery.
- 14:17And we can almost put the same things on the passing.
- 14:20As we said about the running last week in St. Louis about the advantages of saying no gray.
- 14:25When you are out there, when your receiver makes his move, the defensive back has to wait and see which way he is going.
- 14:30And has a tough time getting down.
- 14:32Holding number 73 offense still second down.
- 14:36The holding penalty is against Ron Jerry.
- 14:39And they move the football back to the 21 yard line.
- 14:41And now it will be a second down and 19.
- 14:43Ken Clark and Lem Furnham come in the game to get the Eagles better pass.
- 14:47Carl Harrison moves over to the left side.
- 14:49The reason for that is when he is on the left side, he is left handed.
- 14:52He gets his left hand down and can't see the football from the right side.
- 14:55So this way he is on the left side.
- 14:57He has a clear view of the ball and can charge on the snap.
- 14:59Parkinson retreats.
- 15:00Looking. Flips a little pass.
- 15:02Over to Ricky Young who takes it up a 15.
- 15:05And Ricky Young goes down inside the 10.
- 15:08Right club astro Bobby Howard makes the stop.
- 15:11But Francis backs up.
- 15:12He gave it the long look down the center of the field.
- 15:15And then through to Ricky Young coming out of the backfield.
- 15:17That little flip pass that Ricky Young took it all the way down to the 9 yard line.
- 15:21It brings up a third down and a sixth to the Vikings.
- 15:24We have a 7-7 ball game.
- 15:25We have 7-54 remaining here in the first quarter in Bloomington.
- 15:30Parkinson got the Eagles the first time as he pulled them up by accident and went to Sammy White.
- 15:35Jaworski came right back to Carl Michael.
- 15:37Now Parkinson.
- 15:38The throw.
- 15:39Flips to the center.
- 15:40Fires touchdown again Sammy White.
- 15:43This time right down the middle as Sammy White ran the post pattern and Bobby Lee Howard could not catch him.
- 15:50Parkinson just took two steps back.
- 15:52Fired over the middle.
- 15:53Complete for the touchdown.
- 15:54The Sammy White and the Vikings take the lead.
- 15:57That wasn't even a strictly hard throw.
- 15:59The football kind of fluttered up there.
- 16:01You don't see passes completed like that down the middle very often.
- 16:04But the Eagles were just caught out of position.
- 16:06Sammy White had open territory.
- 16:07Ran toward it and Fred Parkinson found him.
- 16:09And Dan Meyer is into attempting the extra point out of a hole by Paul Krown.
- 16:13Well I'll tell you talking to him may not have the rifle but he gets the job done.
- 16:17Here is the extra point.
- 16:18It is partially blocked but it does get through.
- 16:21I think somebody got their hands on it but it kept on going and it does get through.
- 16:25So there's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 16:27Here are the Vikings 14, the Eagles 7.
- 17:27Back at Metropolitan Stadium we have a 14-7 game.
- 17:30The Vikings on top of the Eagles with 7.37 remaining in an action-packed first quarter.
- 17:34A lot of offense.
- 17:35A lot of football is being put in the air.
- 17:38Dan Meyer to kick off to the far side for the Eagles.
- 17:40The WC Campfield to the near side.
- 17:42Louis Gamota.
- 17:43Here is the kickoff.
- 17:44Coming up and taking it is Campfield at the 5 to the 10.
- 17:4815, 20.
- 17:49Campfield hits across the 25 and goes down to about the 26 to 27.
- 17:54And it is Tom Hannon making the stop.
- 17:56So it is from the 27-yard line, a 20-yard kickoff returned by Billy Campfield for which
- 18:01Jaworski will line up the offense and try to go back to work.
- 18:04The Eagles looked early on their first two running plays.
- 18:06They handed the ball off one to Montgomery and he went for eight.
- 18:09The second time it went off to Hogan he went for eight.
- 18:11And then came the 56-yard strike to Harrods Carmichael.
- 18:16So far the Eagles have three offensive plays and done well but they're down 14 to 7.
- 18:20Jaworski lines them up and sends both wide receivers to the far side.
- 18:24Starts his running back to the eye.
- 18:26Shows motion to the near side.
- 18:27It's coming across is Charlie Smith.
- 18:29And off goes off the left side the woman Montgomery who comes up across the 30-yard line up to about the 31.
- 18:35And all that excitement to Harrods Carmichael's PD pass a few moments ago.
- 18:38That was the 94th straight game in which he has caught a pass and he has now moved into third place on the all-time list.
- 18:43He went by Don Hudson.
- 18:4596, Lance Alworth, the next milestone.
- 18:50Well we may see Jaworski go to him a lot this afternoon.
- 18:53Bobby Banks who had some trouble back there in the corner.
- 18:55Just trouble getting the footing.
- 18:57Carmichael this time out to the far side.
- 18:59Charlie Smith in the slot to the left.
- 19:01The running backs are split.
- 19:03Second down and sixth.
- 19:05And off goes inside to Hogan.
- 19:07And he gets very little as he comes across the 30 and then the Vikings roll back.
- 19:11Led by Doug Sutherland.
- 19:13Nine-year veteran at a superior state in Wisconsin and Matt Blair the left linebacker.
- 19:18So that's much right there.
- 19:19It'll bring up a third down and four for the Eagles.
- 19:22Six minutes and 41 seconds remaining to be played here in the first quarter.
- 19:27Minnesota with more points today already than they scored all last week.
- 19:32And that's hence end game against the Packers.
- 19:35The Vikings go to the nickel defense as they put in the extra defensive backs.
- 19:38Third down and four for the Burris.
- 19:40They split the running backs.
- 19:42Split the wide receivers.
- 19:43Carmichael to the far side. Smith to the near side.
- 19:45Jaworski straight back.
- 19:47Setting. Looking.
- 19:48Fires over the middle.
- 19:49Complete the rich on-board.
- 19:51The guy at the first down at the 35.
- 19:53Jaworski split everybody out.
- 19:55And then with that little crossing pattern through to his right end,
- 19:58Red Jaws for his pick up only two yards and the Eagles will have to punt.
- 20:03Any Don Hudson fans out there, I apologize.
- 20:05Don has 95 straight and I beg your pardon how Carmichael has not gone into third place.
- 20:09He is 94 straight. Don Hudson 95.
- 20:12The long deep man for the Minnesota Vikings is Kevin Miller.
- 20:15He will await for Mike Michelle Punt at his own 28 yard line.
- 20:19The snap by Dennis Franks. Michelle gets it off.
- 20:21It is high and it is a good punt.
- 20:23It is taken by Miller.
- 20:24It is 25.
- 20:25Trying to get away from one Eagle.
- 20:27Rolls to the near side of the field.
- 20:29To the 25 he's finally hemmed in at the 30 and dropped at the 32 yard line.
- 20:33Kevin Miller did an awful lot of running that time,
- 20:36but most of it was natural and one Eagle appears to be hurt.
- 20:40I believe it is Rich R.
- 20:41Rich R. is the man who made the stop at the 32 yard line,
- 20:44but there is an injured Eagle on the play.
- 20:46There is a tie-down on the field with the score.
- 20:48The Vikings 14, the Eagles 7.
- 20:51A very important pick up, trucks.
- 20:53Guess which one is the one we are looking at.
- 20:56You guessed it.
- 20:57Dotson.
- 20:58Oh, party's in bad, and he's going for my Dotson.
- 21:03Dotson.
- 21:04The small pick up. Dotson King Green.
- 21:07Dotson Perspective.
- 21:08Number one for 19 straight meters.

- 21:52Dennis Franks is the injured eagle.
- 21:53He is getting up and down.
- 21:54He's walking off the field.
- 21:56Right now that's 10 seconds for station identification.
- 21:59And Garmin plays your song.
- 22:00WIP News.
- 22:01Mary Lee Sports.
- 22:02The Go Patrol.
- 22:03And the exclusive thinker forecast.
- 22:046 to 10 a.m. on 610 WIP Philadelphia.
- 22:10Dennis Franks is walking off the field with Eagle's trainers.
- 22:12Over to Davis and Ronald Dealer.
- 22:14He apparently is all right.
- 22:15He's walking off under his own power and he has no lip.
- 22:17So apparently he just had a wind block out of him.
- 22:21Eagle Secondary has had the wind blocked out of them so far by the Vikings air game.
- 22:26Tarkington lines them up on the first down and wants to draw again.
- 22:28Fires over the middle.
- 22:30Complete the pass to Chuck Foreman who takes it and goes down.
- 22:32Diabla 40 up at about 38 yard line.
- 22:35Under attack by Bill Berge.
- 22:37But so far Tarkington has been throwing at Will.
- 22:40He's been moving the ball very well through the air against the Eagles.
- 22:43And that's why the Vikings are on top 14 to 7.
- 22:45He's mixing up the way he's throwing too.
- 22:47Sometimes he's rolling out.
- 22:48Sometimes he's dropping straight back.
- 22:50Sometimes he's working off a play action sequence.
- 22:52And those linebackers really don't know what to expect at this point.
- 22:56Using every part of the field.
- 22:58This time he puts Sammy White in motion to the far side.
- 23:01Makes their play action.
- 23:03Tarkington back.
- 23:04Looking down the far side.
- 23:05Fires the pass.
- 23:06Incomplete.
- 23:07Intended for Sammy White up at midfield and it is countered away by Bobby Lee Howard.
- 23:11Who that time timed things perfectly.
- 23:13And cut in front of Sammy White and got his hands on the football.
- 23:17So incomplete.
- 23:19Tarkington on the afternoon has put the ball up 11 times.
- 23:22And completed 9 of those for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns.
- 23:26We told you about Tarkington and the records that he is closing in on.
- 23:29Completion wise the man of the NFL who has completed the most in one season.
- 23:34The Sonny Jurgensen 288 going into this game.
- 23:37Tarkington has completed 274.
- 23:41It is a third down of three for the Vikings at their own 38.
- 23:45Tarkington again shows play action.
- 23:47Looks right. Looks left.
- 23:48He's being chased by three or four Eagles.
- 23:50Finally flips the pass away.
- 23:52And let's see they do not throw a flag.
- 23:54The Eagles are yelling.
- 23:55The Eagles are screaming that there was intentional grounding.
- 23:58As Tarkington was running right and running left and finding nobody.
- 24:02Reggie Wilkes was in hot pursuit.
- 24:04But Tarkington somehow managed to get enough balance to throw the ball forward in the zone of somebody.
- 24:09And he gets out of that danger and now the Vikings will have to punt.
- 24:12Were they heading back there 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage?
- 24:15And you're right somehow Brad Tackington got that ball airborne.
- 24:18And there was a Viking coming back into the pattern who was reasonably close.
- 24:22And the veteran gets away with one.
- 24:24And now the Vikings will punt Greg Coleman their punter in the ball game.
- 24:27He will await the snap on his own 25.
- 24:29John Charityk man for the Eagles.
- 24:31The Eagles want to move that football again at the low snap.
- 24:33But Coleman gets it.
- 24:34And punts it away.
- 24:35Hits low.
- 24:36And it hits it for 30 and takes a bounce to the Eagles 25.
- 24:40At which point it goes out of bounds.
- 24:42So the Eagles will take over first and ten at their own 25 or 26 yard line.
- 24:46At least that time Jim the defense showed the pass watch.
- 24:49And I think that's encouraging when they had Francis back there.
- 24:52They were not able to track him.
- 24:53They almost did.
- 24:54I thought Reggie Wilkes had him by the jersey momentarily.
- 24:56But he did escape a 35 yard punt that time by Greg Coleman.
- 25:00First and tenth of the Eagles.
- 25:01They trail the Vikings 14 to 7.
- 25:03We're in the first quarter here in Bloomington on a snowy day.
- 25:06428 remaining in the quarter.
- 25:08Jaworski lines them up.
- 25:10And puts Harold Carmichael out to the far side.
- 25:12In the slot is Charlie Smith.
- 25:14He saw the game.
- 25:15Did well.
- 25:16Still in a touchdown a week ago in St. Louis.
- 25:18The running back quickly on the eyes.
- 25:19Smith comes in motion to the near side on first down.
- 25:21Jaworski hands off to Montgomery on first down.
- 25:24And Globerg comes across the 25 up to about the 27.
- 25:28And then he is surrounded by a group of purple jerseys once again.
- 25:31And thrown back.
- 25:32Tom Hannon was the man who hit him.
- 25:34But Jim, you can see it right now.
- 25:36But the Vikings are doing the old gang tackling routine.
- 25:39You don't see them going down.
- 25:40You don't see an eagle hit by one man.
- 25:41But you see three or four Viking jerseys just surrounding him.
- 25:44A pickup of only one yard on the carry by Roberts.
- 25:47So it's second down and nine.
- 25:49Smith comes wide to the near side.
- 25:51Carmichael to the far side.
- 25:53Running back, start out in the eye.
- 25:55Redgars for the tight end.
- 25:56Strong to the right.
- 25:57Jaworski looks over that Viking defense.
- 26:00Rich breaks.
- 26:01Set.
- 26:02Pumps one.
- 26:03Ding rush.
- 26:04Going to be hurry.
- 26:05They drop with a second puck at the 15 yard line.
- 26:07Parallel her.
- 26:10Jaworski's wide is darned as to get under the rush.
- 26:12And now an official is going to throw a flag up at the 36 yard line.
- 26:17An official threw a flag way after the play.
- 26:20And let's see what happens right here.
- 26:21Well, the play was designed to go long to Rich Osborne.
- 26:24And he might be complaining that there was a little bumping going on down there.
- 26:28And all of a sudden the referee comes along and throws a flag.
- 26:31Now I don't know whether that's going to be a flag on the linebacker,
- 26:34number 59, who's out there covering.
- 26:36Or whether it's Rich Osborne who was complaining.
- 26:39Well, Matt Blair is coming over and speaking to the official.
- 26:44The flag came, as Jim pointed out, way after the play.
- 26:47They came up and threw it.
- 26:48But now they are marching in the Viking's direction.
- 26:51And instead of a sack, threw the football all the way up across the 30,
- 26:54up to the 32 yard line.
- 26:56Illegal contact.
- 26:59Defense.
- 27:00First down.
- 27:01Well, as you can hear right there, illegal contact on the Minnesota defense.
- 27:06Matt Blair is the culprit.
- 27:08And the Eagles have a first down instead of being thrown for a big loss right there.
- 27:12They have a first down, a big break for the Eagles.
- 27:14They have the ball and a close to 30, up at the 31.
- 27:17This time both wide receivers come to the near side.
- 27:19The back shift out of the eye.
- 27:21Fogan left. Montgomery right.
- 27:23Jaworski into Montgomery, who tries to come off left tackle with little success.
- 27:28Only a couple before Bobby Bryant stopped him.
- 27:31So the Minnesota defense, not one of the better defenses against stopping the run,
- 27:35going well in that regard now.
- 27:37Well, they're very active right now, the linebackers particularly.
- 27:40And you've got a real fast set of linebackers here.
- 27:43McNeil, Seaman, Blair, all very fast.
- 27:46Woodward picks only two yards that time. That was it.
- 27:50First couple of times he touched the ball, eight yard gain.
- 27:52But now the Minnesota defense is heightened against the run.
- 27:55It's a second down and eight to the Eagles. The ball on their own, 33.
- 27:58Wide receivers split. Jaworski back.
- 28:00Rollin' to his right.
- 28:01Fires the pass off to Hogan, who cannot hold on, incomplete in the plan.
- 28:05He was being rushed by Paul Eller.
- 28:07Jaworski did his darndest to get away from Eller.
- 28:10And at the last second rather than go down, saw Mike Hogan out of the corner of his right eye
- 28:13and flipped the pass off to him.
- 28:15But the pass was incomplete. It went off of Hogan's hands, incomplete.
- 28:19And now the Minnesota defense will come up with their nickel-covered five defensive backs.
- 28:24Jaworski has thrown three passes so far this afternoon, completed two of them for a total of 58 yards.
- 28:3056 of them coming on one scoring, like the Howard Carmichael.
- 28:34It is third down and eight. The Eagles go with three wide receivers.
- 28:38The backs in the eye.
- 28:40Now they shift out of it. They're in an open set.
- 28:42As Jaworski takes a long look, he drops back.
- 28:45Setting. Looking. Still looking.
- 28:47Going on a little flip to Hogan at the 40.
- 28:49Hogan away from one man. Pulls forward up to about the 44-yard line.
- 28:54Mike Hogan did a good job and he gets the first down.
- 28:57First down for the Eagles. He had to get to about the 42.
- 29:00And he was hit after that 42, but he just propelled his body forward,
- 29:04picked up the additional two yards, and has a first down.
- 29:07A pickup of 10.
- 29:08Good job by Raj Jaworski, too.
- 29:10He had to duck under the blitz there and then reset up again and look for somebody.
- 29:14In the open found Mike Hogan, and Mike did an excellent job
- 29:17after his hit of lunging forward for the first down.
- 29:19He did not have the first down.
- 29:20Had the attacker so wide, he's been able to make a clean hit there.
- 29:23Two minutes and 16 seconds remaining in an action packed first ball
- 29:26from an offensive standpoint.
- 29:28Vikings up 14-7.
- 29:29Eagles to the first and 10. The ball up to their 42.
- 29:32Smith in motion to the far side.
- 29:33Jaworski on play action. Set.
- 29:35Fire is down the right side. Complete to Osborne at the Viking 30.
- 29:38Out of bounds he goes, but Jaworski on outstanding play action again.
- 29:43Roll to his right found Rich Osborne down that right sideline.
- 29:46Hit him with a bullet, and now the Eagles move deep into Viking territory at the 30.
- 29:51Great play.
- 29:52Great play by Rich Osborne.
- 29:53That's the same play last week, and he turned into a near touchdown
- 29:56against the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 29:57This one was not run quite as deep.
- 29:59What happens there, that secondary really reacts to Harold Carmichael,
- 30:02and they follow him into the short zone, and then Rich Osborne cuts in behind him.
- 30:06Talk about the value of Harold Carmichael.
- 30:08It is more than just his pass catching ability, and he made that thing work.
- 30:12He did. First and 10 to the Eagles.
- 30:14The ball just outside the Viking 30.
- 30:16Both wide receivers to the far side.
- 30:18Jaworski to Montgomery on a sweep right.
- 30:20Montgomery at the 30.
- 30:21Montgomery falls forward to the Viking 24 and leans forward to the 23.
- 30:26Woodward Montgomery carrying the ball on a sweep right.
- 30:29He picked up about five or six right there.
- 30:31Carl Eller made the stop, but Carl Eller,
- 30:3415 years in the league out of the University of Minnesota,
- 30:37but he is still in there mixing it up,
- 30:39and he is still one of the better defensive ends in the National Football League.
- 30:42A pick up.
- 30:43Give Woodward five yards on that.
- 30:44They stop the football just at the 25-yard line.
- 30:47Second and five for the Birds as they split their wide receivers.
- 30:50The running back shift down to the eye of Hogan right.
- 30:52Montgomery left.
- 30:53Second and five.
- 30:55Jaworski on a delay.
- 30:57Gives to Hogan.
- 30:58Hogan hits across the 25 and skips down to the 22.
- 31:02It was a bit of hesitation after Hogan stopped the football,
- 31:05put the football on the delay,
- 31:07and instead of coming right off the left tackle,
- 31:09he appeared to be spinning his wheels momentarily,
- 31:11but picked up three nevertheless.
- 31:13Some games of importance.
- 31:14Cincinnati 10 and Atlanta 7.
- 31:16They're in the third period.
- 31:17Miami 6 and Washington nothing.
- 31:19They're also in the third period.
- 31:2017 for Green Bay.
- 31:22Seven for Tampa, also in the third.
- 31:24They're in the final 12 seconds of the first quarter,
- 31:26and now the Eagles will go with two tight ends as they bring Dill Larson in.
- 31:30Alex Carmichael lines up for the wing right.
- 31:32The running back through Squillamacur down in two.
- 31:35Jaworski to Montgomery off left tackle.
- 31:37He has the first down across the 20 and down to the 18.
- 31:41Montgomery the runoff carrier.
- 31:43Montgomery right there.
- 31:45An illegal first down.
- 31:47A pick up of five yards and an illegal first down.
- 31:51Clockdown shows 19 seconds, but they apparently reset it.
- 31:54Had 12 on the clock momentarily and then went back to 22.
- 31:58Down to 12, and that is perhaps the last play of the first quarter.
- 32:02Vikings leading the Eagles 14 to 7, but the Eagles driving right now.
- 32:06Five, four, three, two, one, and he won't get it off.
- 32:11There's the gun.
- 32:12Ending the first quarter, there's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 32:15The Vikings 14 to the Eagles, seven.
- 32:18Oh, it's here again.
- 32:19Yes, sir, I've won.
- 32:20I can see the answers to questions.
- 32:25Back in Bloomington where the Vikings made the Eagles after one quarter of 14 to 7,
- 32:29but the Eagles are certainly driving.
- 32:31They have a first down at the Vikings 18 yard line, 17 and a half yard line.
- 32:35They've probably seen as much offense right there in the first quarter by the Eagles as we have all season.
- 32:40Absolutely, and defensively it was good to see the Eagles put a stop to Fred Tarkin.
- 32:44He came out the first two series and just was totally unstoppable without any deal of pressure whatsoever.
- 32:49The Eagles linebackers are put three linemen,
- 32:52and he just went right down the field untouched with that offense.
- 32:56That was real problems there until the Eagles finally put a little heat on him there that third series.
- 33:01That's what I said on the pregame show when we were speaking about Tarkin.
- 33:04He said this could be his last game before the home crowd here in Minnesota that he may retire,
- 33:09but he seems to retire, I'd retire depending on the fate of each game.
- 33:13First and 10 to the Eagles, they have the ball at the Vikings 17.
- 33:16The wide receivers who split the running backs in an open set as Jamorsky turns.
- 33:21Fires into that right half, slaps the Carmichael over 20.
- 33:24Carmichael drives the muscle away from a man, but he is knocked back.
- 33:27So Carmichael only gets back to the original line of scrimmage as Jaroszki fakes off inside,
- 33:32then threw that green pass out to Harold Carmichael,
- 33:35but he can only get back to the line of scrimmage before Matt Blair rocks him and just knocks him back a few yards.
- 33:41So no game, it'll be second and 10.
- 33:43Matt Blair just beat the blockers that time, pushed them out away, and got just clamped on Harold Carmichael.
- 33:47Good blocking was out there. Two men in front of Howard, he had room if he could make the move,
- 33:50but Blair just got in there and boxed up the play.
- 33:52Also some help by Mark Mullaney.
- 33:54It is second down and 10 for the Eagles, the ball on the Vikings 17.
- 33:57The wide receivers who split the running backs are split.
- 34:00So continuing to fall here in Bloomington as Jaroszki on play action, rolls to his right.
- 34:05Still rolling, looking, being taped, and knocked out of bounds at the 20.
- 34:09Mark Mullaney pursued all the way as Jaroszki tried to roll out to the far side and look for Carmichael in the end zone.
- 34:18He was well covered, Ben Jaroszki just tried to pick up whatever yards he could,
- 34:22but the Vikings had him covered. Mark Mullaney and Matt Blair, and out of bounds he goes a loss of about four.
- 34:28Rich Aswell is the number one receiver in that pattern, but he was just held up at the line of scrimmage.
- 34:32He couldn't get over into that area in time.
- 34:34Vikings will go into the nickel coverage right now.
- 34:37Into the game comes their fifth defensive back, and the Eagles will throw three wide receivers at the white.
- 34:42Chris and Kenny Payne come from the game along with Harold Carmichael, an important third down on 14.
- 34:48The wide receivers, Carmichael out by himself to the far side.
- 34:51Payne and Smith to the near side as Jaroszki retreats.
- 34:54So deep, looking for Carmichael in the end zone, touchdown Eagles.
- 34:58Jaroszki on play action again, fakes the handoff, drop back,
- 35:04drop Carmichael in the far corner of the end zone, and just fired the ball above the outstretched arms of Matt Wright.
- 35:1221-yard touchdown pass, Jaroszki and his favorite target, Harold Carmichael, combined again.
- 35:17There is another hundred dollars, a point from Frito Lay for the Eagles, five for Leukemia Fund.
- 35:21And French Eagle blockers for that play. A fancy blitz on that time by the Vikings was picked up.
- 35:26There was not even man-to-man coverage in the secondary.
- 35:29Here's the cry for the extra points, they killed in the ball game.
- 35:32It's plotted, it's drilled, it's no good, but there is a flag on the play.
- 35:37There is a flag on the play.
- 35:39There seem to be problems with the exchange, and it's against the Vikings.
- 35:42The Vikings are offside.
- 35:44So the Eagles get a break right there, but I say a break, perhaps Jim, I couldn't use that word,
- 35:49because I think it is the Vikings offside that shoved the Eagles center on that play.
- 35:53Guy Morris, the ball never got there properly.
- 35:56One more try.
- 35:57On that last touchdown pass, the Vikings only had two men guarding against the deep pass that time.
- 36:01The Eagles had two receivers and three receivers actually in the pattern.
- 36:05That's a great blocking on that play by Hogan and Montgomery.
- 36:08All right, here is the repeat of the extra points.
- 36:10This time it's plotted, and it's drilled up, but this time it is good by Mitchell.
- 36:14And so there's a timeout on the field with the score 14 to 14.
- 36:20In 1969, Jackie Spirich won his first World Open Rivals Championship.
- 36:25He repeated in 1971.
- 36:27Then again in 1973, yet Jackie Spirich doesn't know about cars.
- 36:31Hasn't been ready.
- 36:32I do know that cars just don't perform the way they used to.
- 36:36One of the reasons is the unladed gasoline that the new engines call for.
- 36:40Unfortunately, most unladed don't have the power that gasoline used to have.
- 36:46Well, dirty unladed regular boats.
- 36:49Delivers the kind of power you got from gasoline before they could be laid out.
- 36:53Dirty unladed regular actually delivers more power than this other major unladed.
- 36:58And that's what you can drive a van, it seems to me.
- 37:01And while dirty unladed regular delivers more power, it costs less than this other major unladed.
- 37:07I don't know how Jackie does it, but for Scotsman, that really appears to me.
- 37:12Dirty unladed regular, more power for left-leaning.
- 37:19We've got a cold day here, but we've got a hot football game.
- 37:22Here we are in the second quarter.
- 37:23It is 14 to 14.
- 37:25Both Parkinson and Jaworski with a couple of touchdown passes to their favorite wide receivers.
- 37:30He went to Parkinson, went to Sandy White twice, and Jaworski did the same to Harold Carmichael.
- 37:35Kicking off is Mike Michel and deep for the Vikings.
- 37:38To the middle is Kevin Miller.
- 37:39To the far side is Harry Washington.
- 37:41And to the near side is Robert Miller.
- 37:44So a couple of Millers and Harry Washington back there.
- 37:47A five-yard penalty is being assessed against the Vikings, who were offside again on the extra points.
- 37:51So Michel kicks off from the 40.
- 37:54It is high and not particularly deep.
- 37:56Taken by Robert Miller at the 10.
- 37:58To the 15, to the 20, and across the 25, up to the 26 to 27 before Derry Campfield makes the drop.
- 38:04So that time, Jim, it was a matter of great distance by Mike Michel on the kickoff,
- 38:09but he did get the ball high into the air to give the title teamers a chance to get down there
- 38:13and contain the Vikings, not let them get up to the 35 or 36.
- 38:17Also, it got into the hands of Robert Miller, who is not nearly as agile and as quick as the deep backs,
- 38:22and he was unable to get as much yardage upfield.
- 38:24Offside, number 38, kicking team, five-yard penalty, kick again.
- 38:29Well, as you can hear, there is an offside this time against Larry Barnes of the Eagles,
- 38:33one of the special teamers.
- 38:34They're going to move it back, so now he'll kick off from the 35,
- 38:37where he would have under normal circumstances in the first place.
- 38:41Vikings like to take their chances.
- 38:44Setting it up with Kevin Miller, he'll be the man in the middle.
- 38:47Then to the far side is Robert Miller, and to the near side is Harry Washington.
- 38:5116-yard return that time, and the Vikings will try to do better.
- 38:54We have 13-28 remaining in the first half, a 14-14 ball game.
- 38:58We have seen the ball put in the air a lot.
- 39:01Parkinson and Jaworski both showing an awful lot early.
- 39:05Big, big football game, but you know all about the importance of it.
- 39:10Now there's a discussion between Mike Michel and the official.
- 39:13Now Michel picks up a football and has started to move back to the 30,
- 39:17but now puts it down and adjusts it on the tee at the 35.
- 39:24Eagles special team is ready to go.
- 39:26The bottom squad, Michel approaches the football, he hits it.
- 39:29It is high again, not too deep, taken by Kevin Miller at the 15, 20, 25, 30,
- 39:34and he's hit hard and dropped at the 32-yard line.
- 39:37Good tackle right there by Dennis Frank.
- 39:40Frank just came up and really put him down, so he has a 17-yard return.
- 39:45The Vikings have a better field position up at the 32, but how about Dennis at that time?
- 39:49He was hurt the last time when he kicked off,
- 39:51but he comes right back in the ball game and just really cracked him.
- 39:54I'll tell you, Dennis really loves it.
- 39:56He's from Michigan, played his college ball at the University of Michigan.
- 39:59He was all charged up today when he saw that snow, and he came out here earlier.
- 40:02This is his kind of stuff.
- 40:03That's right, we were standing with him on the surface before the game,
- 40:06and he said, I love it, I love it, can't wait to go.
- 40:08First and 10 for the Vikings, 13, 20 remaining in the first half.
- 40:12Clarkington to the throw on first down.
- 40:14He back-settles, he goes left.
- 40:15He completes the pass to Rahman Rashad, possibly a 44-yard line.
- 40:19Clarkington to Rashad.
- 40:21Mike LaMaster makes the stop, but Clarkington is showing you early
- 40:25that he has so many directions in which to go.
- 40:28Unhesitatingly putting it up, that's for sure.
- 40:30Almost every first down, if I'm not mistaken, he's just backed up and let one go.
- 40:34Rashad, excellent route runner out there.
- 40:36He can find the open areas, and on first down, of course,
- 40:39you're playing zone defense for the most part,
- 40:41and Rashad knows how to find those open areas.
- 40:4313-yard gain right there.
- 40:45At this time, the wide receivers are split.
- 40:46The ball is marked at the 44.
- 40:48As Clarkington hands off, there's a penalty flag down
- 40:50as he gives off to Ricky Young, who comes forward for a couple of yards.
- 40:53The penalty flag drops very early.
- 40:56Charlie Johnson and Dennis Harrison over to make the stop,
- 40:58but the penalty is going to be against the Vikings
- 41:00and probably an illegal procedure right here.
- 41:03I guess that's why they don't run very much, Will.
- 41:05No, they're not running as well as they have in the past.
- 41:08They think of themselves as a passing team pretty much,
- 41:11although as I said earlier, last week against the Green Bay Packers,
- 41:14for some reason, they seemed to think that putting the ball on the ground
- 41:17repeatedly was the way to do it.
- 41:19Now mark the ball back to the 40.
- 41:21Illegal motion, number 44, offense, still first down.
- 41:25It's an illegal procedure penalty against Chuck Foreman,
- 41:27so it is first and 15, fought the football at the 39-yard line.
- 41:31Eagles held the Vikings the last time the Vikings went offensively,
- 41:34but the Vikings have done well.
- 41:36First and 15, the football at the Vikings 39.
- 41:41The wide receivers are split forward at this time,
- 41:43lines up with the wing left.
- 41:45The handoff goes inside, now Foreman takes it
- 41:47and goes forward across the 42 and up to about the 43 or 44,
- 41:51and Carl Harrison and Bill Berge makes the stop.
- 41:54Miami on top of Washington, 13 to nothing now.
- 41:57They're in the third period.
- 41:58Green Bay in the third period, 17 to 7 over Tampa Bay.
- 42:01The Jets 14 to nothing over Baltimore in the third.
- 42:04Cincinnati 10 and Atlanta 7 in the third.
- 42:07Pickup right there of five yards by Foreman,
- 42:10now the Eagles will sink fast as Carl Harrison moves over to left defensive end,
- 42:13Lem Berlem in at right defensive end,
- 42:15and Ken Clark replaces Charlie Johnson as the nose tackle.
- 42:18Parkington, the throw, going down the middle for Bob Tucker incomplete.
- 42:22It went off Tucker's hands, and was he ever ahead?
- 42:26Randy Logan and Bill Berge just cracked him,
- 42:29the ball was there, it hung momentarily,
- 42:32and it took a long time coming down.
- 42:34Tucker did have it in his hands, but then Logan and Berge made a sandwich.
- 42:39Sort of a combination man for man zone there.
- 42:41Bill Berge, believe it or not, was in pass coverage there against Bob Tucker,
- 42:44and then after Bob Tucker gets a certain yardage downfield,
- 42:47about 10, 12 yards or so, then zone coverage comes into effect,
- 42:50and as that pass was arriving, so were a couple of Eagles.
- 42:53When you're hit by those two, if you're hit by either one of them,
- 42:56you're going to feel it on Monday morning,
- 42:58and Tucker will sting for a while, this time he lines up strong right.
- 43:01The wide receivers are split on the third down at 10.
- 43:04Francis back, going deep down the left side, firing incomplete,
- 43:08intended for Rashad down at the Eagles 20 yard line,
- 43:11the pass broken up by Herman Edwards and John Schara,
- 43:14good defensive job right there.
- 43:16Rashad had position and had some daylight out there,
- 43:18but the ball wasn't thrown too well, hung up there just enough for the Eagles to react and get over,
- 43:22John Schara and Herman Edwards both coming in there and breaking the play up.
- 43:26Just a not too well thrown football.
- 43:28Reggie Rooks perhaps getting Parkinson to release a couple of seconds early as he came barreling through.
- 43:33Schara will line up, he's the deep man as the Vikings will have to punt.
- 43:36Greg Coleman, the punter.
- 43:38Jim Hughes, the man who comes into snap.
- 43:41Coleman stands on his own 30 yard line, awaiting the snap.
- 43:44Gets it at the good snap, he gets the punt away, it is low, it is driving,
- 43:48and Schara backs up and takes it at his 18.
- 43:50Runs left to the 25, and down he goes to the 26.
- 43:54John Schara never really getting underway that time before Fred McFeel made the stop.
- 43:59A 35 yard punt and about a 7 yard return.
- 44:02There's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 44:04The Eagles 14, the Vikings 14.
- 44:11Merrill Rooks and Jim Barniak back at Metropolitan Stadium,
- 44:14but the snow continues to fall.
- 44:15We have a 14-14 game.
- 44:17The Eagles have the football here in the second quarter, 11-42 remaining in the second quarter.
- 44:21They have a first and 10 at their own 26 yard line.
- 44:24Jaworski is 5 for 7, 115 yards and two touchdowns.
- 44:27Jaworski with a splendid beginning here today and a pocket that has opened well for the Vikings.
- 44:32He lines up with both wide receivers to the nearest side of the field.
- 44:35The Eagles moving from right to left.
- 44:37The back shift out of the split into the eye.
- 44:39Now at most of the far side goes Charlie Smith.
- 44:42Jaworski turns, play action, has the football, still has the football being chased.
- 44:47Fires over to the far side, completes the pass to Rich Osborne,
- 44:51who takes it and goes out of bounds at about the 38th first down.
- 44:54He was not the primary receiver, he was the secondary receiver.
- 44:58Probably the third man he looked for, but Rich Osborne had cleared the pass and takes up a first down.
- 45:04Mark Mullaney had left a defensive end for Carl Eller, who's leaving the field as a matter of fact.
- 45:08Must have suffered some kind of injury.
- 45:10Mark Mullaney had good chance of really dumping Ron Jaworski then,
- 45:13but Ron Pupfink and Duck Sundrum got the extra time and there was Richie Osborne all by himself.
- 45:17Good job by Jaworski and by Osborne, who had cleared away from his original pattern and just got clear.
- 45:23First and then to the Eagles, they have the ball up close to their 40, the back to the eye.
- 45:26Both wide receivers over on the far side.
- 45:28This time the handoff goes inside to Wilbur Montgomery, who doesn't get much.
- 45:31He comes across the 40 up to about the 42 or 43 yard line.
- 45:36Right in the center of the field, Doug Sutherland makes the stop.
- 45:39A pick up on the play of about three yards by Wilbert.
- 45:42We have a first-teen, 14 game.
- 45:44We have 11 minutes and 16 seconds remaining here in the first half.
- 45:49All four touchdowns through the air.
- 45:51Two from Prockenden to Sammy White.
- 45:53Two from Jaworski to Harold Carmichael.
- 45:56Second down and seven for the Berths.
- 45:58Carmichael lines up wide to the near side, Smith to the far side.
- 46:02The running backs are open.
- 46:03This time Jaworski uses a long call.
- 46:06He retreats again with play action.
- 46:08Setting, looking, fires the pass.
- 46:10Incomplete.
- 46:12Richie Osborne was looking over his left shoulder.
- 46:14He tried to look back over his right shoulder.
- 46:17And as he turned, he lost his balance.
- 46:19But he was open at the Viking 35 yard line.
- 46:22It was a bit of a mix-up in communication between Jaworski and Rich Osborne.
- 46:26A pass play just never clicked.
- 46:28But he was out there and he wasn't clear and Jaworski just didn't hit him.
- 46:32Well, I tell you, these Vikings better have a little bit more respect for Rich Osborne.
- 46:35They've totally ignored him here on some of these passing opportunities.
- 46:38He's out there all by himself.
- 46:40That time the ball was in the air and he was still running around.
- 46:42And then when he looked around, there it came, almost hit him in the chest anyway.
- 46:45Well, this time he comes out of the ball game.
- 46:46As the Eagles bring in Ken Payne as the third wide receiver.
- 46:49Payne lines up to the near side.
- 46:51In the spot to that left is Charlie Smith.
- 46:53The Vikings employ the nickel defense.
- 46:55Vikings almost jump off sides.
- 46:57Jaworski backs up.
- 46:58Hits ground.
- 46:59Big face.
- 47:00Post the football.
- 47:01Incomplete.
- 47:02Carmichael was down there at the 40.
- 47:04The ball thrown way out of bounds.
- 47:06You can just see that Jaworski that time was trying to get rid of the football as he was really being rushed by Jim Marshall right in there on Jaworski.
- 47:14And he just really never had time to plant the feet that time.
- 47:17And threw to Harold Carmichael or in his direction and then floated it actually out of bounds.
- 47:22Eagles will have to punt.
- 47:23Standing back in punt formation is Mike Mitchell.
- 47:26Kevin Miller is the deep man for the Vikings.
- 47:28He will await Michelle's punt at his 22 at the high snap.
- 47:31But it's handled.
- 47:32Michelle gets it away.
- 47:33It's high.
- 47:34It's close.
- 47:35And the punt is taken by a member of the 20 yard line.
- 47:38So again a good job by Mike Mitchell who hits the cloud and causes a fair catch.
- 47:43A 36 yard punt.
- 47:44Not great distance but no run back.
- 47:46Right now let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 47:49When the Eagles aren't playing, we're playing the Fest of the 50s, 60s and 70s.
- 47:54610WIP.
- 47:55Metro Media Radio Philadelphia.
- 47:57We play your songs.
- 47:59Vikings have the football but now they try to get some work.
- 48:06But I think Jim we have to feel a bit more encouraged after the past few defensive series by the Eagles.
- 48:11They had a lot of problems early as Parkinson really takes that secondary apart.
- 48:15But in their last couple of series they've adjusted.
- 48:18Of course what they'd like to do too right here is force some kind of turnover.
- 48:21This is the deepest the Vikings have been in their own territory.
- 48:24They've been operating with great field position outside the 30 yard line for the most part.
- 48:28They're right at the 21 right now.
- 48:30Setting up the Eagles well of course to force some kind of turnover.
- 48:33When you throw the ball as much as Fran Stockenden throws it, you're going to have to throw an interception once in a while.
- 48:37He's thrown a great deal in his career.
- 48:39260 as a matter of fact. That's a lot of interceptions.
- 48:42Yeah well he's had his share of interceptions this year as a matter of fact.
- 48:45He has been intercepted 22 times.
- 48:47Last week against the Packers he threw four of them which hurt.
- 48:50So perhaps the Eagles can pick off one of these wobblers.
- 48:54Stockenden has thrown well but he does not have the rightful arm to get the ball there on a line.
- 48:58That kind of pass sometimes leaves itself to being intercepted.
- 49:01Let's see what happens.
- 49:02This time he hits both wide receivers over to the nearest side.
- 49:05In the spot of Sammy White. Outside of him is Rashad.
- 49:07The back's in an open set. The hand up goes inside.
- 49:09Good running room for Chuck Foreman who comes off left tackle.
- 49:12All the way up to the 30 yard line.
- 49:14Maybe to the 31 or 32 before Frank LaMaster makes the stop.
- 49:18If you get the defense thinking pass enough that's going to happen.
- 49:21You can give them that passing look and then open up a hole in the middle and that's what happens.
- 49:26Chuck Foreman came forward for a gain of nine yards.
- 49:29A second down and one and then they take a long look at it.
- 49:32And they look and say he has the 10.
- 49:34Makes the first down by I guess about the nose of the football.
- 49:37So a first down for the Vikings across the 30.
- 49:40Make it for 32 yard line. First and 10 for the Vikings.
- 49:43We have 10-12 remaining in the first half of a 14-14 game.
- 49:47Wide receivers line up to the far side.
- 49:50The back's thrown out in the eye.
- 49:52As Parkinson turns, gives off inside to Foreman that time and he is banged right down.
- 49:57He is knocked down by the Eagles who thought for a moment they had yards of football loose.
- 50:01But it came after the whistle.
- 50:03Charlie Johnson made the stop.
- 50:05That's kind of a little simple draw play.
- 50:07They've been faking that draw and running and passing off of a pass action sequence.
- 50:12Throughout most of this first period and early parts of the second.
- 50:14That time they gave it to the ball carrier.
- 50:16He got stacked up. There was a loose ball there.
- 50:18He's going to rule it with debt.
- 50:20That's exactly right. It will be about a second down of 13.
- 50:22Second, 13 and a half.
- 50:24Both the wide receivers come over to the far side.
- 50:27Now Ricky Young comes out to the near side.
- 50:29The handoff again up the middle of Chuck Foreman who cracks across the 30 and comes up to the 35 and 36.
- 50:34Chuck Foreman on the delay.
- 50:36He had Ricky Young spread out of the wide receiver on the right side.
- 50:39His normal wide receiver is over on the left side.
- 50:42But the handoff went inside and Berge finally made the stop.
- 50:45There was a pick up right there at six.
- 50:48Cincinnati Bengals playing top 16 to seven now over Atlanta third period.
- 50:52So a lot of things seem to be working out for the Eagles on the scoreboard wise.
- 50:56The most important score is right here.
- 50:58They are tied with the Vikings 14-14.
- 51:01Now on a third and four the Eagles get their better pass rushing team in with Ken Clark and Len Burnham.
- 51:06Parkinson back.
- 51:07Close the pass to the far side.
- 51:09Has a receiver.
- 51:10Completes the pass to Ricky Young.
- 51:11But there is a flag down of the 40 yard line.
- 51:14Drew Mahalek is the man defending who forced Young out of bounds.
- 51:17But there is a flag on the play.
- 51:19Len Burnham doing a little yelling down there like hey somebody's got a hold of me in there.
- 51:23That's I think is going to be the call.
- 51:25You know the Eagles got those mufflers on their shirt today and they're very easy to stick your hand in there and hold the guy back.
- 51:29It is against the Vikings and Billy Burndale points out that it's against Frank Myers.
- 51:33So they will step off the holding penalty against the Minnesota Vikings and instead of a first down they will have a third and long.
- 51:40Eagles have their best pass rushing team in there.
- 51:43Len Burnham he is the healthiest.
- 51:46Holding number 74 offense third down.
- 51:50Holding penalty officially called and Frank Myers is usually Billy Burndale on the ball.
- 51:55Or on the man holding the ball.
- 51:59Third down at 14.
- 52:01Eight minutes and 41 seconds remaining to be played here in the first half.
- 52:05It's 14 to 14.
- 52:07Sammy White comes out to the near side.
- 52:09Rich shot out to the far side.
- 52:10Pucker lines up strong right.
- 52:11What a quick count.
- 52:13Parkington rolls right.
- 52:14Puts the ball in the air.
- 52:15And the pass is incomplete.
- 52:17It is dropped by Sammy White at the 40 yard line.
- 52:19And the Vikings fans are furious.
- 52:21Bobby Lee Howard is over there.
- 52:23They wanted an interference call.
- 52:25But that ball hung again.
- 52:27It hung again and the Eagles had a chance to react.
- 52:29Bobby Lee Howard did a neat little move that time.
- 52:31He jumped right over the back of Sammy White and came down on the other side and knocked the ball around.
- 52:37So eight minutes and 36 seconds remaining in this first half and the Vikings will have the punt.
- 52:42Backing up in punt formation.
- 52:44Ray Coleman beats the Eagles.
- 52:46John Sharer.
- 52:47He will await the punt at the 38.
- 52:49Jim Hughes snaps.
- 52:53Takes a long time now.
- 52:54Now gets it off.
- 52:55And the punt is away.
- 52:57It is high and it is floating.
- 52:58And Sharer backs up.
- 52:59Takes the punt.
- 53:00It is 34 to the 35 to the 40.
- 53:03And John Sharer has finally dropped at the 42 yard line by Jim off the center.
- 53:07But he did a good job right there picking up those six to seven yards on the very high punt.
- 53:1239 yard punt.
- 53:15Eric Johnson was coming that time.
- 53:17That was about as long a count, Jim, as I'll see for getting a punt away.
- 53:20But I guess that's the old trick of trying to get the defense off sides that time and pick up some additional yards.
- 53:26But the Eagles do take over the football.
- 53:28They will have it across their 40 yard line up the three of 42.
- 53:31First and 10 with eight minutes and 25 seconds remaining to be played here in the first half of a 14-14 game.
- 53:37And what does it look like around the rest of the league?
- 53:39Okay.
- 53:40Green Bay 17.
- 53:41Tampa Bay 7.
- 53:42And the third.
- 53:43All these are third period.
- 53:44Miami 13.
- 53:45Washington 0.
- 53:46Cincinnati 16.
- 53:47Atlanta 7.
- 53:48New York Jets 14.
- 53:49Baltimore 13.
- 53:50Los Angeles 10.
- 53:51The New York Giants 7.
- 53:52They're all in the third.
- 53:53Now in the second.
- 53:54New Orleans 17.
- 53:55San Francisco 3.
- 53:56Buffalo and Kansas City are tied at 7-7.
- 53:58And St. Louis leads Detroit 7-0.
- 54:00Make that 10-10 now as the New York Giants at three points.
- 54:0610-10 Rams Giants.
- 54:07You know it's interesting that this weather is cold as it is.
- 54:14I have expected a high today of about 21 or 22 degrees.
- 54:17It's not as uncomfortable as it was last week in St. Louis where you had that raw rain and the dampness that kind of just creeped through to your bones.
- 54:25Here it's just cold but it's very dry.
- 54:27And it really isn't that bad for watching a football game.
- 54:30It's cold enough.
- 54:31That's easy for you to say.
- 54:33I'm looking at a bunch of people sitting down here to my right who are sitting in 10 inches of snow.
- 54:37They did not clear the sands out.
- 54:39There's 10 inches of snow on the seats and on the runways between the seats.
- 54:42And these people are with their feet stuck right in the snow.
- 54:45But they're all happy and there are very few dough shows here in Minnesota and the crowd is whipping it up and enjoying a good offensive show here in the first half.
- 54:52First intensive Eagles.
- 54:53They have the ball at their own 42.
- 54:55Wide receiver split.
- 54:56Running back split.
- 54:57And up inside the Mike Hogan who gets a block at the 45 and comes forward to the 48.
- 55:01Mike Hogan as that play was contained off left tackle.
- 55:04He was momentarily stopped at the 42 and kept the feet turning and came across the 45 and then up to the 46 and 47 and finally ends up at the 49 yard line.
- 55:14Jeff Seaman makes the stop with Matt Blair.
- 55:16But a good game right there by Mike Hogan.
- 55:19A seven yard game by Hogan.
- 55:21Spot the football with the Eagles having it at their own 49 yard line.
- 55:25Second down and four.
- 55:27Actually a long three.
- 55:28The wide receivers are split.
- 55:30The running backs are in an open set.
- 55:32The running game really not going too much.
- 55:34It's been all through the air.
- 55:35Jamorski gives off to Wilbur Montgomery who cracks off right tackle, comes across the mid stripe and may get down to about the 48 or 47 and he is very close to a first down.
- 55:45I think the Eagles would very much like to get their running attack going for obvious reasons.
- 55:50But of course when you do run the ball and eat up a lot of cock you don't have the football in the hands of Mr. Charky.
- 55:55They're going to bring the chains in and just in case he does not have it the Eagles are going to employ a too tight offense as they bring Bill Larson into the game and they put Charlie Smith.
- 56:04They stretch the chains and he is very, very close but he is maybe two or three inches away from having that first down.
- 56:12So the Eagles will have a third down and just inches to go and they will bring up everybody tight.
- 56:17Bill Larson, Rich Osborne.
- 56:19I have seen quarterbacks in just this situation take the obvious which is the inside running play and sometimes go with the bomb that can really knock the defense for a loop.
- 56:29As Jamorski say with the conventional method does he try to shake up the Vikings right here.
- 56:34He calls the signals.
- 56:35Has Carmichael on a wing right.
- 56:36Has the backs in an open set.
- 56:38Still called.
- 56:39The Vikings almost jump off.
- 56:40The handoff goes inside and plunging ahead and he appears to have the first down as Mike Hogan.
- 56:45Just a quick little handoff to Mike Hogan off left tackle on a good block by Tom Lukin and Hogan went right over the top of Lukin and he has the Eagles first down at the Viking 47 yard line.
- 56:56Tom Lukin a very fine drive blocker.
- 57:00He did a couple of inches and he got about a yard and a half.
- 57:04Tom Lukin very quietly putting in a pretty solid year here.
- 57:07He first he filled in for Woody Peebles now for Wade Keane getting a lot of action and doing well.
- 57:11He is doing a job.
- 57:13First and then for the Eagles they have the ball to the Viking 47.
- 57:17The wide receivers are split.
- 57:18The running backers split.
- 57:19As Jamorski goes to the long count.
- 57:21On a pitch left goes to Mike Hogan who tries to turn the corner.
- 57:24Hogan to the 45.
- 57:25Hogan to the 40.
- 57:26And Hogan out of bounds at the Viking 38 yard line pushed out by Bobby Bryant.
- 57:31But a good block that time by little Wilbert Montgomery.
- 57:33And also downfield Harold Carmichael.
- 57:35He was tying up one of the secondary people there.
- 57:37Phil Wise.
- 57:38He kept him off the play and enabled Hogan to turn the corner and get about five more yards.
- 57:42Don't underestimate that facet of Harold Carmichael's play.
- 57:45Never do or never will.
- 57:46You look at the wide receivers in the National Football League.
- 57:48First of all a few of them have his size.
- 57:50But very, very few of them actually like the block.
- 57:53And Harold enjoys doing it.
- 57:55He thinks it's a very important part of this game and it is.
- 57:57At the first down for the Eagles they pulled out the 36 yard line as Jamorski lines them up.
- 58:03Tumbles the football on the snap and then falls on it and falls forward to about the 36 yard line.
- 58:10So Jamorski on the second down play, I beg your pardon, had the snap fumbled and then just fell forward.
- 58:16And the football ends up in the possession of Jamorski on the Eagles and down at about the 36 yard line.
- 58:22They're going to take a measurement right here.
- 58:27He needed about a yard and a half and on the second down play.
- 58:33They will stretch the chains and take a look and how about that?
- 58:37Jamorski picked up a first down so he fumbled the football on the snap and then recovered it and picked up about two yards in the forward direction.
- 58:44So it's a first down.
- 58:46The clock continues to tick.
- 58:47We have 6.36 remaining in the half.
- 58:49It is the first attempt for the Eagles to pop the football to see a 36 yard line of 14-14 games.
- 58:56So now the Eagles making the ground game start to operate.
- 59:00They break the model.
- 59:02Carmichael comes wide to the near side.
- 59:04Charlie Smith now to the far side.
- 59:06The running back in the eye.
- 59:08First attempt of the first.
- 59:10There is the Viking 36.
- 59:12Jamorski on a pitch right to Montgomery.
- 59:14He cuts inside at the 35.
- 59:16Montgomery at the 30.
- 59:1825, 20, 15, 10, 4, touchdown Montgomery.
- 59:22There are no flags on the play.
- 59:24The Eagles touchdown as Montgomery took the pitch, went to the outside, cut back inside behind Pops by Woody Papels and Jerry Sizemore and ran 36 yards for the touchdown.
- 59:35There is another $100 a point from Tray to Lay for the Eagles, why for Leukemia Pus?
- 59:39Boy I'll tell you how many times do we said what a delight it would be to see Wilbert Montgomery breaking the open field because nobody's ever going to get him.
- 59:45That time Wilbert just made a precise cut that faked out about 11 Vikings.
- 59:49They were pursuing so well that they all took themselves out of position.
- 59:52Here is the extra point.
- 59:53The ball is spotted and Michelle boots it up and boots it perfectly.
- 59:57So the Eagles now lead the Minnesota Vikings 21 to 14.
- 1:00:01And now it will be the Vikings turn to have the play come from behind.
- 1:00:05The Vikings got off to a good start in this ball game.
- 1:00:07And I'll tell you the signs were ominous for the Eagles very early when on the Vikings first possession it was Parkinson to Rashad and then Parkinson to Sammy White for a couple.
- 1:00:16And ultimately Sammy White taking a five yard Parkinson touchdown pass.
- 1:00:20But then the Eagles said the heck with that.
- 1:00:22They came right back and they opened with a couple of eight yard running plays.
- 1:00:25And then Jaworski dropped back and he spotted Harold Carmichael and he hit him with a bullet down on that side of the field.
- 1:00:30And Harold took that for a 56 yard touchdown pass.
- 1:00:33But then it was Parkinson's turn and he came back and brought the Vikings downfield and culminated that drive with a nine yard touchdown pass to Sammy White who dropped 14 to 7.
- 1:00:42But in the second quarter Jaworski to Carmichael for one touchdown.
- 1:00:45That made it 14 to 14.
- 1:00:47And now we just saw a 36 yard picture gap by Wilbert Montgomery and the birds were up 21-14.
- 1:00:54All right.
- 1:00:55Don't underestimate the little quarterback for the Vikings.
- 1:00:57Six minutes and one second left here in the second period.
- 1:01:00He can take you downfield in about two minutes flat.
- 1:01:02He seems just when you think he's starting to slow down or suffer or not putting enough on the ball he all of a sudden comes to life.
- 1:01:08Perfect example last week against the Green Bay Packers when he had a terrible three periods and a sensational fourth.
- 1:01:14As long as they got him back there, no amount of points or two safe miles.
- 1:01:17Here's the kickoff by Michelle.
- 1:01:19It is high and not particularly deep.
- 1:01:21It is taken by Miller to the 15, Miller to the 20, up to the 24 yard line.
- 1:01:25And he is knocked down by Billy Canfield.
- 1:01:28Billy Canfield, I believe it's Louis Jamona who actually sped down and came under him.
- 1:01:33Canfield, Jamona both coming down and Jamona actually lowering his body and getting the shoulder and knocking him off his pins.
- 1:01:39Wilbert Montgomery, he's trying to be the eagle's first 1,000 yard a year man since Steve Van Buren back in 1949.
- 1:01:45He needed 100 in this ball game.
- 1:01:46He's got 67 right now.
- 1:01:48It's all to be a first and 10 for the Vikings.
- 1:01:51He's got the football to the 24 yard line, we have 5, 53 remaining in the first half.
- 1:01:55Eagles up 21 to 14 as Parkinson lines up the line.
- 1:01:58Wide receivers split.
- 1:01:59Parkinson throws to the right flat to Tucker who tries to bounce away from one man.
- 1:02:03It is Rashad who thunders the football out of bounds as the Vikings retain possession.
- 1:02:07It is Samad Rashad who took the pass in that right flat and he tried to get around two or three.
- 1:02:12Eagles stumble the football harmlessly out of bounds.
- 1:02:14Reggie Wilkes had his arms over there around Rashad.
- 1:02:17And actually all that, that's one yard in game.
- 1:02:20I'd say it was a pretty hairy fumble.
- 1:02:22It was in the hands of Frank Lamaster for a moment and Frank actually fumbled it out of bounds.
- 1:02:26Last man of course to control the football though was Rashad and that is why the Vikings retain possession.
- 1:02:32Second down and nine.
- 1:02:33Out to the far side goes Rashad.
- 1:02:35Out to the near side goes Sammy White.
- 1:02:37Tucker lines up strong left.
- 1:02:39Turns and they give the hand off to Chuck Foreman who tries to come straight up the middle and reaches about the 28 or 29 yard line.
- 1:02:46He is thrown back by Bill Berge.
- 1:02:49Berge played a great game a week ago against the Cardinals and he is playing very well again.
- 1:02:54Here is the pass to do it against the Vikings.
- 1:02:56He's been in on several tackles and has made a few excellent pass offensive plays.
- 1:03:00Seven tackles Billy tells me for Bill Berge.
- 1:03:03Vikings have themselves a third down and five as they break through the huddle.
- 1:03:06Rashad comes out to the near side.
- 1:03:08Sammy White out to the far side.
- 1:03:10The back's in a wide set.
- 1:03:12Ricky Young to the near side.
- 1:03:14Foreman to the far side.
- 1:03:15Parkinson dropping, retreating, throwing almost intercepted incomplete and tended for Ricky Young who was his safety valve.
- 1:03:22He tried to flip the little pass for Ricky Young and almost intercepted by Randy Logan and had Randy been able to come up with that football.
- 1:03:30It was clear sailing.
- 1:03:31Very good pressure that time by Drew Mahalek who was in on Parkinson and he tried to throw the football while pedaling back.
- 1:03:38So now the Vikings will have to punt.
- 1:03:405.05 remaining in the half and John Sharrah backs up to receive that punt to his own 32 yard line.
- 1:03:45Drake Coleman in the front of the way for the Vikings.
- 1:03:4921 to 14 the Eagles lead.
- 1:03:525.05 remaining in the exciting first half.
- 1:03:55Here's Coleman's punt.
- 1:03:56It's low. It's driving.
- 1:03:57Sharrah takes it at the 36.
- 1:03:59At the 40.
- 1:04:00Sharrah at the 45.
- 1:04:02Sharrah at midfield.
- 1:04:03Sharrah at the Viking 49 and he's finally dropped by Fred McNeil but John Sharrah an excellent afternoon.
- 1:04:09John Sharrah not the fastest guy in the world but he sure is a peasant act for finding the daylight.
- 1:04:13He's like a shrew out there.
- 1:04:15He picks a little opening and then claws into it and drives and powers his way and gets himself seven or eight yards.
- 1:04:21They spot the football just into Viking territory at the 49.
- 1:04:26Mark Mullaney is in at right defensive end now replacing Jim Marshall.
- 1:04:30Carl Eller is back in the ball game so he's all right.
- 1:04:33He had been injured earlier.
- 1:04:36First and 10 for the Eagles.
- 1:04:39Alex Carmichael goes out to the far side.
- 1:04:41Smith in the slot.
- 1:04:42The backs are open.
- 1:04:43Now they shift into the eye with Mike Hogan the lead blocker.
- 1:04:46Now in motion to the near side comes Charlie Smith.
- 1:04:49As he turns, gives off to Montgomery who finds winning Willman.
- 1:04:52Spins down to the 45 yard line.
- 1:04:54Jett Seaman makes the stop but a good run by Wilbert who picked up four.
- 1:04:58Again, there was a play Jim and how many times have we seen this season where it is all but closed up.
- 1:05:03But Wilbert has one extra ball and a spin here and a fake there and he raised it down to the 45.
- 1:05:08The Viking defense are pursuing so well that they're vulnerable now.
- 1:05:11Their misdirection plays are just to the natural abilities of a Wilbert Montgomery who can turn on a diamond going the other direction and create his own misdirection play.
- 1:05:19It is the second down and six and they have the football of the Viking 45.
- 1:05:23Both wide receivers go out to that far side.
- 1:05:25Now in motion to the near side comes Smith.
- 1:05:27Backs thrown out in the eye.
- 1:05:29Javorsky gives to the second man through Montgomery, bounces off a man at the 45, comes back and goes across the 40.
- 1:05:35Montgomery was stopped for no gain at the 45 yard line.
- 1:05:38He was bounced back two yards, cut to his right, regained his balance and took it inside the 40 and close to another eagle first down as he picked up six yards.
- 1:05:47First down eagle.
- 1:05:49He looked like a bumper car on that play.
- 1:05:50Ever seen those things they crash into a wall and turn around and start going in the other direction?
- 1:05:54Dodger's guard.
- 1:05:56That's exactly what he looked like.
- 1:05:58Montgomery on the afternoon has 11 carries for 77 yards at 977 for the season.
- 1:06:05What a second year for Wilbert.
- 1:06:07First and 10 for the Eagles.
- 1:06:09The pitch left goes to Montgomery and this time he's going to be thrown for a loss back at the 44.
- 1:06:14Fred McNeil leaves the charge and that time the Vikings had one man at their sights.
- 1:06:19Number 31 and three or four guys went after him and they throw Wilbert Montgomery for a loss of five, Mark Mullaney and Fred McNeil and James White.
- 1:06:28All converge to make the stop.
- 1:06:30Well the Eagles guessed wrong I think that time.
- 1:06:32They had been running up the middle.
- 1:06:33They tried to spring somebody to the outside hoping that the Viking defense would be reacting to that middle pick but not the case.
- 1:06:39The Vikings were in the perfect defense for that play.
- 1:06:41It's a second down of 15 for the Eagles.
- 1:06:4321 to 14 they lead with 3.06 remaining in the half and they were trying to establish that ground game.
- 1:06:48But now let's see if he puts it in the air.
- 1:06:50He splits the running back to worse he does.
- 1:06:52Comes straight back.
- 1:06:53Gives ground.
- 1:06:54Fires in the flat to Montgomery who trips over his own man.
- 1:06:57Gets up to the 30 or 45 and runs down to the 40.
- 1:07:00He actually trips over Woody Peoples in that far flat at the 48 yard line.
- 1:07:05But he knew that since he had not been stopped by the Vikings he'd just gone up.
- 1:07:08And he picked up eight additional yards down inside the 40 to the 39 and a total pickup for Montgomery of about five on the play.
- 1:07:16Right there inadvertently it was Woody Peoples who did the job of bringing down Wilbert Montgomery but Wilbert still gained yardage.
- 1:07:22Kyle Herrer, he's been in the league for about 55 years and he should know the rules a little better.
- 1:07:26Once he saw Montgomery down he sort of applauded it rather than jump on him.
- 1:07:30Kelly Campfield comes in the ball game replacing Wilbert.
- 1:07:34The Eagles have a third down of 10 at the Viking 39 yard line.
- 1:07:38Three wide receivers in the game.
- 1:07:40Jaworski back setting looking going over the middle incomplete.
- 1:07:45Intended for Harold Carmichael down at the Viking 20 yard line.
- 1:07:49Jeff Seaman was the man who got his hands on it.
- 1:07:52Carmichael perhaps was open momentarily but Jeff Seaman did an excellent job of reading that play.
- 1:07:58You're not going to find many brighter middle linebackers than Jeff Seaman.
- 1:08:01He's been around for a long time and he plays the pass, the run, it doesn't matter which but he plays with a lot of expertise.
- 1:08:06Well that ball is about 35 yards in the air and although Harold did have some daylight,
- 1:08:10Jaworski had to thread it through those linebackers and when you're talking 35 yards and the speed that they have it's a very difficult thing to do.
- 1:08:16So it's two minutes and eight seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:08:18The Eagles will punt the ball to the Vikings.
- 1:08:20Michelle comes in the ball game deep.
- 1:08:22The receiver is Kevin Millery.
- 1:08:24He stands back at his own 10 yard line at the high sap but Michelle handles it.
- 1:08:27Gets away a short floating punt that goes down and out of bounds at about the 25 yard line.
- 1:08:33We will see specifically where they marked the football but he did not get all of it.
- 1:08:38The punt is only about 14 yard line, 14 yard punt.
- 1:08:4314 yard punt so when time is back in the Vikings will take over on their own 25.
- 1:08:48There is the two minute warning.
- 1:08:49There's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:08:51The Eagles leading the Vikings 21 to 14.
- 1:08:54Oh we've shared the good times and the laughter after all that we've been through.
- 1:09:08The Hondekers, the most expensive place in the world.
- 1:09:33After all that we've been through, no other field will be as successful as the Hondekers.
- 1:09:53For most of this season it has been a matter of the offense trying to get enough points
- 1:09:56and the defense does the job for the Eagles.
- 1:09:58But today the Eagles offense has put 21 first half points on the board.
- 1:10:02Now the Vikings have the football.
- 1:10:03Parkinson back throws over to that far side.
- 1:10:05Complets the pass to Bob Tucker who takes a shy of the 30 yard line.
- 1:10:09His tight end is about the 28 and is knocked out of bounds by Reggie Wilkes right there.
- 1:10:13But we've seen a very, very effective first half offense by the Eagles.
- 1:10:17They have put 21 points on that board.
- 1:10:19A couple of touchdown passes to Harold Carmichael on a 36 yard Wilbur Montgomery run.
- 1:10:24We have a minute and 55 seconds remaining in this first half.
- 1:10:27The Vikings have 14 points.
- 1:10:29Both of which, both touchdowns have come through the air.
- 1:10:32Parkinson to Sammy White both times.
- 1:10:35A pick up of three yards on that last play.
- 1:10:37It's a second down and seven.
- 1:10:39Parkinson to the ball and it's a 27.
- 1:10:41He retreats. He looks. He goes deep down the middle.
- 1:10:44The pass is intercepted. It is intercepted by Bobby Lee Howard.
- 1:10:48And the Vikings are going to contend that they have their hands on the football
- 1:10:51but no way it was intended for Sammy White.
- 1:10:54But it is Bobby Lee Howard who went into the air at the 30 yard line of the Eagles 30
- 1:10:59and puts the ball in the way.
- 1:11:00Interception for Bobby Lee Howard and for him it is his third of the year.
- 1:11:04Brand trying to throw the deep pattern go for it all.
- 1:11:07He threw right into the coverage that time.
- 1:11:08The Eagles had double coverage downfield.
- 1:11:10Bobby Lee Howard, Randy Logan, they were all around the football.
- 1:11:12And actually any one of three people could have caught it.
- 1:11:15Good job by the Eagles right there.
- 1:11:17Sammy White, what he tried to do was try to grab an additional handle on that football
- 1:11:21and say that he had possession but the official was right on the spot to make the ruling.
- 1:11:25And how the Eagles take over first and 10 the ball on their own 30.
- 1:11:29The field becoming more snow covered all the time.
- 1:11:32I have a feeling in that second half it will be tough to see the yard markers.
- 1:11:36First and 10 for the birds but just 143 remaining to be played.
- 1:11:40Carl Michael out there on the far side with one man on him.
- 1:11:42The handoff goes to Willem Montgomery.
- 1:11:44It is not a smooth exchange and he goes down at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:11:47That time it was Ron Jaworski turning giving to Willem Montgomery and there was some misfooting right there.
- 1:11:54They flipped into each other and the play went nowhere.
- 1:11:57Boy there was a gaping hole too right up the middle.
- 1:11:59Guy Morris had really cleared out a big hole and had there not been that breakdown back in the backfield he would have been gone.
- 1:12:04Vikings called time out right now as they like one more crack at the Eagles.
- 1:12:08Boy I can't believe it.
- 1:12:09There's a fan setting up to play in the snow down there.
- 1:12:11They're going to take about two weeks to get that saxophone off that kid's lip when he gets done playing here.
- 1:12:16It's about 12 degrees down there.
- 1:12:17Are you kidding?
- 1:12:18There's such hardy people here.
- 1:12:19They're used to this.
- 1:12:20This is just a few flurries.
- 1:12:22Nine, ten inches.
- 1:12:24We can't see the cars though in the parking lot.
- 1:12:26Everybody's here.
- 1:12:27There are just, it just appears that there are very, very few no-shows.
- 1:12:31This is their kind of football weather gym and I think they're very used to it.
- 1:12:34I've been checking the scoreboard.
- 1:12:35I will.
- 1:12:36Cincinnati 23 and Atlanta 7 in the third period.
- 1:12:39In the fourth period Green Bay 17, Tampa Bay 7.
- 1:12:42Also in the fourth, Miami 16, Washington 0.
- 1:12:45Giants and Los Angeles Rams in the fourth tied at 10-10.
- 1:12:48They're just ahead of Baltimore, 21 to 16 in the third.
- 1:12:51New Orleans 17, San Francisco 10 in the second.
- 1:12:54Seven-seven, Buffalo, Kansas City in the third.
- 1:12:57And Louis 7 and Detroit 0 in the second.
- 1:13:00And I can't believe that kid is going to play the saxophone down there.
- 1:13:05We have a minute and 31 seconds remaining to be played here in the first half.
- 1:13:09The Eagles on top of the Vikings, 21 to 14.
- 1:13:11They have a second down at 10, the ball at their own 30-yard line and Carmichael lines up in that spot.
- 1:13:16So they write Charlie Smith outside of him, the back in an open set.
- 1:13:20One of the Vikings almost comes offside.
- 1:13:22She warns he gives off to Montgomery who turns at the 30 and goes down at the 31-yard line.
- 1:13:26But there was a flag on the play and they may have slapped the Vikings coming offside.
- 1:13:30I believe it was Carl Eller who made the premature jump that time.
- 1:13:36So that would be a break for the Eagles who would like to keep the ball.
- 1:13:40So it is offside against the Vikings and Carl Eller.
- 1:13:42The Eagles would like to eat up this clock.
- 1:13:44They're not going to try anything too daring right here.
- 1:13:46Oh, they may if they have a couple of seconds and can't get into too much trouble.
- 1:13:50But they would just like to eat up these remaining one minute and 26 seconds on the clock
- 1:13:55and go to this locker room with a 21-14 halftime lead.
- 1:14:00See if that defense can come out there in the second half.
- 1:14:02Offside, 81, defense, no second down.
- 1:14:06They call it against Carl Eller so it is still a second down.
- 1:14:09Now it is second down and five yards.
- 1:14:11So the Vikings five penalties today for 35 yards and penalties.
- 1:14:15The Eagles have been penalized twice for 44.
- 1:14:17So it is the second down and five for football.
- 1:14:19The Eagles have at their own 35-yard line the wide receivers who split.
- 1:14:23The back turn and open set as Jaworski wants to throw.
- 1:14:26Humps left, goes to Carmichael who takes it at the Viking 40.
- 1:14:29Away from one man at the 35.
- 1:14:31Carmichael inside the 30 and down at the 26.
- 1:14:35Jaworski and everybody thinking run that time.
- 1:14:38Here is Carmichael who is having a magnificent afternoon
- 1:14:41and took the football inside the Viking 30 down at the 28.
- 1:14:45First down for the Eagles and now the Eagles call the timeout.
- 1:14:48Okay, but for the most part, Carmichael is getting devil coverage,
- 1:14:51but it doesn't seem to matter.
- 1:14:52He is able to beat that front guy and then he just takes the deep man,
- 1:14:55the safety one on one, and he beats him to an open territory.
- 1:14:57And that time with a little more speed, of course, Howell is gone.
- 1:15:00But he did make his way clear and had nothing but clear sailing in front of him,
- 1:15:04but it was a little tough for the big guy to get some traction going
- 1:15:06and the Vikings were able to react.
- 1:15:08But the Eagles are in great shape now, the ball at the 26 yard line,
- 1:15:11a minute and 17 on the clock, and the Eagles with two timeouts remaining.
- 1:15:15On the afternoon, Carmichael is just having a tremendous afternoon.
- 1:15:18He has caught four passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns,
- 1:15:21so the Vikings are having their problems with Howell Carmichael this afternoon.
- 1:15:25That doesn't make them special.
- 1:15:27A lot of side teams have come up with Howell Carmichael.
- 1:15:29The Eagles have a timeout right now.
- 1:15:30We have a minute and 17 seconds remaining in this first half.
- 1:15:33The Birds on top, 21 to 14.
- 1:15:34You know, Jim, there are a lot of postseason awards.
- 1:15:37One is the one in our city, the Maxwell Club Award,
- 1:15:39where they give the Birkbeil Award to the pro player of the year,
- 1:15:42the NFL player of the year.
- 1:15:43And I'll tell you right now that my award is, my vote is going to go to Howell Carmichael
- 1:15:47because I can't think of anybody who has had a better season than he has.
- 1:15:51Well, I said that the other night.
- 1:15:52You know, we looked, who's the most Iowa player in the National Football League this year?
- 1:15:55And he is certainly a contender.
- 1:15:57Just can't have a better season than big number 17, first and tenth of the Eagles,
- 1:16:01the ball at the 26 yard line, the back from the eye, the wide receivers are split.
- 1:16:05Jim Worske on play action, sets up, looks, fires to the far side,
- 1:16:09incomplete and pended for Rich Osborne down at the 12.
- 1:16:13So he takes the handoff inside.
- 1:16:15He looks down the middle, then he tried to go to Rich Osborne,
- 1:16:18who had run an out-pattern over at about the 15 yard line,
- 1:16:21but Rich just about got his hands on a good coverage by the strong safety Phil Wise,
- 1:16:25who stayed with Osborne step-per-step.
- 1:16:28Another play action move there by Ron Jaworski, enabling him to get a great deal of time.
- 1:16:32Once you stick that ball into Robert Montgomery's hands and he goes 36 yards with it,
- 1:16:35they got to respect him every time, fake or no, and that's just what's happening here.
- 1:16:40It's the second down at 10.
- 1:16:41The clock shows 1-12 remaining,
- 1:16:43and I wouldn't be surprised to see him set from up for the pass and go back to Montgomery once again.
- 1:16:48Second down at 10 for the Eagles, Carl Michaelis to the nearer side this time,
- 1:16:51mid-stown to the far side, Osborne strong right.
- 1:16:54Jaworski on play action setting, going over the middle, complete to Charlie Smith, who takes it in for a touchdown.
- 1:17:01Jaworski to Charlie Smith on a post-spotter, and he drilled it over the middle.
- 1:17:06Smith took it at the 5, he was hit at the 3, and went in.
- 1:17:10He beat Matt Wright for a touchdown.
- 1:17:12Nate Wright beating on a 27-yard pass.
- 1:17:15Jaworski to Charlie Smith, and there is another $100 a point from Frito-Lay for the Eagles' Fly for Leukemia Fund.
- 1:17:21All right, there's a case of Charlie Smith being ignored the entire first half, and then you go to him.
- 1:17:25Bad tackling also by the Vikings that time.
- 1:17:27Here's the extra point at 10.
- 1:17:29Yeah, they could have stopped him at about the 5, but a good job by Charlie.
- 1:17:32Bad tackle by the Vikings.
- 1:17:34Here's the extra point, and it is blocked.
- 1:17:37It is so good as the Vikings got in there and blocked the football that was blocked by John Turner.
- 1:17:43Right now, let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:17:59So the Vikings come in there and block the attempt for the extra point, and the score is the Eagles' 27 and the Vikings' 14.
- 1:18:0627 to 14, so the Vikings can come back and take the lead with two touchdowns, but the Eagles' defense will sit around at half-time.
- 1:18:15And look at Coach Marion Campbell outlining some ways, and Chuck Lawson, the defensive line coach, and Fred Brody, who comes to coach as the secondary.
- 1:18:22These kind of people are going to try to stop any kind of Viking explosion in the second half.
- 1:18:27Eagles' offense is explosive as it's been all season, not as explosive, more explosive than it's been all season.
- 1:18:33Three touchdown passes today for Ron Jaworski, two to Harold Carmichael, one to Charlie Smith, and a 36-yard run by Wilbert Montgomery.
- 1:18:42Mike Mitchell will kick off deep for the Vikings in the middle of Kevin Mitter.
- 1:18:46To the far side is Robert Mitter, and to the near side, Harry Washington.
- 1:18:51Block showing 105 remaining to be played here in the first half.
- 1:18:56Michelle kicks the football. It is low. It is not too deep. It is going to bounce at the 15, roll to the 10, and go out of bounds at the 4.
- 1:19:04So they will bring this football back, attack a 5-yard penalty, and kick it off all over again.
- 1:19:10Kickoff out of bounds, 5 yards, re-kick.
- 1:19:17The field now is taking on a little bit of a glaze.
- 1:19:20About, I guess maybe an inch or two of snow has fallen since the game started, and the field is heated, and it doesn't absorb the snow, or at least it doesn't lay on the grass.
- 1:19:29By this time though, there's a bit of a glaze forming, and I'm wondering if that isn't giving Mike Mitchell a little trouble as he approaches that football.
- 1:19:36I'm sure it is, because if you take that last plant of the foot, you have to have some kind of traction.
- 1:19:41He just is not getting the traction right there. He's approaching the football almost tentatively.
- 1:19:47So now they'll move it back to the 30-yard line, and the Eagles' bomb squad will try to prevent any kind of damaging return by the Vikings here in the pad last minute and five seconds on the half.
- 1:19:56Eagles on top of the Vikings, 27 to 14.
- 1:20:00I mentioned earlier in the broadcast that the receivers do have an advantage. As difficult as that field is to them, it is more difficult for the guys covering them.
- 1:20:08The defensive backs cannot plant, and the offensive receivers are taking advantage of it this afternoon.
- 1:20:13Here's Michelle's kickoff. It is low, and again, it heads out of bounds at the Viking 35-yard line.
- 1:20:21So they'll move it back, and Mike Michelle stands at the center of the field with his hands on his hips, and he looks down and he looks up, but he just seems a bit exasperated.
- 1:20:31Louis Giamotto goes over to Mike Michelle and has a few words to him, and then Dennis Franks, who was the captain of the special teams, goes over and puts his arm around the shoulder of Mike Michelle and says,
- 1:20:41Don't worry about it. We'll get the job done. We don't care if you have to kick from the five or kick from the one.
- 1:20:47Or if there's a minute and five left and two timeouts for the Vikings, they're going to get the ball up around midfield if they get any kind of decent run back there.
- 1:20:54Plenty of time for them to add some more points.
- 1:20:56That's absolutely true, and I don't think there's a quarterback in the National Football League who can use those timeouts and run that two-minute drill more expertly than Franz Harkinzen.
- 1:21:04Just how to make it work, as Green Bay found out last week, and so many teams have found out over the past 17 years.
- 1:21:11So now Mike Michelle will be kicking off his own 25-yard line, but you can see the way he is approaching the ball right now that he's not going to get too much foot into it.
- 1:21:19He's approaching it very tentatively. Let's see what the Eagles' bombslide can do right here.
- 1:21:24Michelle hits it. Again it is low, and again it is heading over to the right side, but this time it is taken by Robert Miller at the 30 to the 35, and he has run out of bounds with the 42 or 43-yard line.
- 1:21:33And a fly goes down over there, I believe, and we could have a personal foul against one of the Eagles for hitting him late.
- 1:21:39There is a flag on the Eagles. It could be against Orrin Middlebrook over on that far side. Somebody hit him late.
- 1:21:46And that's something that the Eagles could never afford. I was just about to say. They're going to step off the 15 yards right here.
- 1:21:53I was just about to say, considering where he kicked the ball from, the Eagles could be in a lot worse shape.
- 1:22:00But then 15-yard penalty, a personal foul. I know two ways about it. It's a dumb thing to do.
- 1:22:06Late hit, out of bounds, number 81, he says, first down.
- 1:22:11It is against Orrin Middlebrook. It's a dumb thing to do, and it cost the Eagles 15 yards.
- 1:22:16And now the Vikings operate in good field position. There is the Eagle 42.
- 1:22:21Markandum splits the wide receivers. Once the throw on first down, goes over to the far sideline incomplete.
- 1:22:26Amad Rashad was separated from the football by Herman Edwards, and Herman is not playing tentatively at all.
- 1:22:33Absolutely not. Rashad had a chance to catch that ball, and Herman Edwards, who wasn't over there in time to break it up, just drove right into Rashad chest high and knocked the ball free.
- 1:22:42We have 57 seconds remaining to be played here in this first half.
- 1:22:46Eagles on top of the Vikings, 27-14. Markandum breaks them from the huddle. Out to the far side goes Rashad. Out to the near side goes Sammy White.
- 1:22:55Markandum backs up. Once the throw, goes over the middle, complete to Ricky Young, who takes it across the 35 and goes down at the 32.
- 1:23:04Drew Mihalik made the stop right there. Minnesota is going to take a timeout right here.
- 1:23:10He may be about a yard shy of the first down. We'll see exactly where they spot it, but from here it looks to be just about a yard short.
- 1:23:18And we're going to get a timeout called by the Vikings. They now have one remaining. Fall on about the 33 yard line.
- 1:23:26They're going to bring in the chains and take a look at it.
- 1:23:30Fifty seconds remaining to be played here in this first half. But the Eagles offense has looked about as healthy today as it has this entire season.
- 1:23:38First down!
- 1:23:41It just has the first down, but first down yardage is not a big thing at this point.
- 1:23:46We'd also like to come in and dump Mr. Markandum or pick one off instead of letting them come down to the field goal territory for Rick Danmeier.
- 1:23:55The Vikings are very anxious to see how Rick Danmeier reacts when he has his first challenge this afternoon because he blew one last week at 21 yarder,
- 1:24:03which would have won that game at overtime against the Green Bay Packers, and he blew an earlier one from 32 yards away.
- 1:24:10But they say he's a tough kid and he can come back. First and 10 for the Vikings. Just one setback. That's Chuck Foreman.
- 1:24:18Young is on a wing left. Markandum throws quickly to Rashad and takes the pass inside the 30 and runs out of bounds with the Eagles.
- 1:24:2420 is to stop the clock and again it is Drew Mahalek back in the game and running him out of bounds.
- 1:24:30Rashad's intent all the way was to step out of bounds there. Four and a half yard gain I guess. Stop the clock.
- 1:24:36It uses up just four seconds. 46 seconds remaining to be played here in the first half.
- 1:24:42The football is spotted inside the Eagles. 30 down to 28.
- 1:24:48That completion ties Fran Parkandum with Sonny Jurgensen for the all-time record of NFL completions in one season of 288.
- 1:24:57Parkandum back again. Fires to that far sideline and again gets Rashad.
- 1:25:02This time he takes the football and goes out of bounds at the 23 yard line.
- 1:25:07So he breaks the record right here. Fran Parkandum has now completed more passes in one season than anyone in NFL history.
- 1:25:16They're not exactly picture perfect passes. They're all short outs. Flutter balls.
- 1:25:25That's a pick up right there of about three or four yards. Pass was incomplete. Second foot came down out of bounds.
- 1:25:33Well as you can hear from the official, here at the stadium they had already announced that Parkandum had broken the record.
- 1:25:38But the official says nope. That's the second foot of Ahmad Rashad came down out of bounds.
- 1:25:43And now the Vikings will have a third down of six. The football is 28 and Parkandum has only tied the record.
- 1:25:48But I think he will break it.
- 1:25:52The Vikings splitting their wide receivers as Parkandum goes back.
- 1:25:55Hooked a little pass to four minutes of 25, four minutes of 20, and four minutes of eagle 18 for a first down and there is the record.
- 1:26:0431 seconds. Vikings lining up without a huddle. Here we go.
- 1:26:08And now it's down to 27 seconds remaining as Parkandum has two wide receivers over on the near side.
- 1:26:13He pumps one. He's going to the end zone incomplete.
- 1:26:17The pass is intended for Sammy White in the end zone, but he was well covered on the play.
- 1:26:22Back with him was Bobby Lee Howard matching him step-per-step.
- 1:26:27And it will stop the clock with 19 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:26:31It will be a second down and 10 for the Vikings. The football inside the 20 is the 18.
- 1:26:36Parkandum in the afternoon has completed 15 of 25 attempts.
- 1:26:40For 123 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception picked off by Bobby Lee Howard, his third of the year.
- 1:26:48It's the second down and 10 for the Vikings.
- 1:26:50Vikings going with three wide receivers as they pulled their tight end.
- 1:26:54Parkandum back. Setting. Looking left. Going to the end zone incomplete.
- 1:26:59Intended for a ball, Rashad.
- 1:27:04Herman Edwards is back there with Rashad, but he had the inside of the Edwards gym and had the pass been delivered, I think, the Vikings had a six point.
- 1:27:12Well, I tell you, he's a guy to watch, Rashad. Just put a great move on Herman Edwards.
- 1:27:16In order to get to the inside, he actually came back toward talking at about four or five yards and then turned it back up.
- 1:27:21That's how he maneuvered to get position, and he's just one of the great ones at getting in that perfect position.
- 1:27:27And what he'll do is just when you'll think you have him inside, he'll turn to the outside and take one of that far corner.
- 1:27:33And pressure that time by Dennis Harrison on Fran Parkandum.
- 1:27:36It's the third down and 10 for the Vikings. Parkandum backpedals.
- 1:27:39Look. Set. Rolls away. Flows the pass. Intercepted by the Eagles. Intercepted by Berge.
- 1:27:45Berge to the 16, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40. Still on his feet. A midfield. 45 down in the Viking territory at the 42 yard line.
- 1:27:56Finally brought down by Mick Pinglehop as the gun goes off.
- 1:28:00So Bill Berge intercepts the pass and took a long run with it.
- 1:28:05And the Vikings do not come up with a point right there.
- 1:28:08The gun sounds. That's the end of the half with the score.
- 1:28:12The Eagles leading the Vikings 27 to 14.
- 1:28:15Lou Gimota is deep into the far side for the Eagles and Billy Campfield to the near side as Rick Danmire tees up the football.
- 1:28:22The Eagles offense would like to just control the football as much as it possibly can here in the second half and not give that Vikings offense a chance to operate.
- 1:28:33Here's Danmire's kickoff. It is low and it is skidding and bouncing at the 20.
- 1:28:37And rolls the yarn needle for the intercepted by Gimota at the 5.
- 1:28:41Running likely to the 10. And down goes Lou Gimota at the 12 yard line.
- 1:28:46So the Vikings got a break on a poor kickoff that hit at about the 30 and dribbled his way through the two Eagle men.
- 1:28:54Dribbled his way between Gimota and Billy Campfield.
- 1:28:57Gimota had to go back there and pick it up at the 5 and he got it back to the 12.
- 1:29:02Well I thought possession becomes very vital here.
- 1:29:05The Eagles now with the ball in the 11 yard line will want to get it out at least a couple of first downs before they punt if they have to punt.
- 1:29:13You know it's falling a little heavier right now and the field of course is getting a little flipier.
- 1:29:18Fred McNeil was the man who made the tackle on the kickoff.
- 1:29:21Jaworski brings up the Eagles and sets both wide receivers out to the outside.
- 1:29:26There to the New York side with a callback of the match clock. The running backs are in the eyes.
- 1:29:29Jaworski turns and gives and up the middle comes Wilbur Montgomery.
- 1:29:33He comes across the 12 and up to about the 14 yard line.
- 1:29:37A pick up of about 2 for Wilbur on the carry.
- 1:29:40It will bring up a second down at 8.
- 1:29:43Jake Vermeer talks about a low risk offense and here in the second half he would like that offense as low risk as possible but at the same time he cannot afford to sit on the ball because you know how the Vikings can come back.
- 1:29:56Brock and Dennis brought many a team back.
- 1:29:58Second down and 6. A pick up of 4 they say.
- 1:30:01The wide receivers are split to running backs in an open set.
- 1:30:04As Jaworski turns, gives off to Hogan who flies a sweep. He comes across the corner, crosses the 15 and goes out of bounds at the 18.
- 1:30:12Fred McNeil and Bobby Bryant did the job of banging him out of bounds.
- 1:30:15But a good pick up right there by Hogan who shows some good balance.
- 1:30:18Jim I think as you look down you can see the way his feet were sliding on the ice.
- 1:30:23Eagles don't ordinarily like to throw the ball when they're down this deep in their own territory but Bobby Bryant is really playing way off of Harold Carmichael on the corner, the left corner out here.
- 1:30:32The quick out pattern, certainly the way it was played the last couple of downs was wide open and it looks like it's wide open again.
- 1:30:38Well he could do that or he could go to his right end, Rich Osborne. Let's see where he splits his back. He could flip to one of those.
- 1:30:44Jaworski on a long count. Does he put it in the air? He dropped back. No delay. Hand off to Montgomery who comes across the 20.
- 1:30:52Up very close to the first down yardage at the 21 or 22. Let's see where they spot it.
- 1:30:58So Robert Montgomery took that delayed hand off and came upfield with the ball and he is very very close to an eagle first down, close enough to bring in the change.
- 1:31:07Jaworski will do that and one of the things that makes that play very often is having Mike Hogan around, one of the better blocking backs in the National Football League.
- 1:31:15They stretch the change, they take a look, first down Eagles. They get a break as the football just reaches the change.
- 1:31:24So when you are trying to control that football that's a big play right there.
- 1:31:28And they are away from that dangerous territory where they started this drive in the shadow of their own end zone.
- 1:31:34Having it across to 22. 13.47 remaining in the third quarter. Eagles leading the Vikings 27-14.
- 1:31:41Earl Reeves and Jim Barniak happy to send you all the action from Smoley Bloomington.
- 1:31:45The back gives out of the open set. Now coming in both to the near side is Charlie Smith.
- 1:31:49Jaworski goes to the pitch right to Montgomery who cuts inside at the 20. Comes forward to the 24 and then he is slabs and thrown back.
- 1:31:57Bill Wise, the strong safety comes up and grabs Wilbert and he minimizes his gain. Only one yard on the carry by Montgomery.
- 1:32:06Good pursuit that time by the Vikings. They've been burned on that pursuit.
- 1:32:09The last time Wilbert carried the ball on a similar play he cut it back and turned it the other way for a long gain and a touchdown.
- 1:32:15But that time they filled all the holes well.
- 1:32:17That was a 30 yard touchdown by Wilbert in that second quarter.
- 1:32:22Eagles have another three touchdowns have been on the path. Two to Carmichael and one to Charlie Smith.
- 1:32:27Now they put in three wide receivers. Second down to nine. Jaworski again in a delay and getting good running room.
- 1:32:33Up the middle comes Mike Hogan and he leans forward, doesn't quite reach the 30 but comes up to about the 28 or 29 before James White makes the stop.
- 1:32:42So Jaworski likes to give them a passing look and then go with that delay either to Montgomery or to Hogan.
- 1:32:48We got some final scores here Mero. Miami 16 and Washington 0. Green Bay 17 and Tampa Bay 7.
- 1:32:55This is a very interesting situation for the Eagles right here. They have third down and two. Red Jaws boy with tight end comes back in the game.
- 1:33:03The wide receivers split. The running backs are set left. Does Jaworski put the ball in the air? He intends to.
- 1:33:10Fires the pass and it is incomplete. Intended for Richard Osborne and it goes off his hands.
- 1:33:16And fairness to Osborne he has a leap to try and catch that ball and just fire out as far as he possibly could.
- 1:33:23Jaworski rolled out and just overthrew Osborne.
- 1:33:26Maybe threw it a little bit too soon. Carl Eller of course was applying the pressure and it's easy for us to stay way up here with that big guy coming down on you.
- 1:33:33Ron tried to thread it there a little bit too quickly before Ricky Osborne was in position.
- 1:33:38But he was open. Alright here's the punt by Michelle. He gets it away and it's high and it is floating and Kevin Miller looks up at the snow and he calls takes the football at the 30.
- 1:33:47Does not take a fair catch. Comes forward, falls across the 35 and up to the 36 and there he will stop.
- 1:33:53Louis Gimboda makes another tackle. A 40 yard punt by Mike Michelle that time and he is doing a fine job.
- 1:33:59He's getting the ball up and the Vikings are not coming up at the run back. There's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:34:05The Eagles 27 the Vikings 14.
- 1:34:12The Eagles are leading the Vikings 27 to 14. That drive by the Eagles used up three minutes and five seconds on the clock.
- 1:34:18So now the Vikings will get their hands on the ball offensively for the first time in the second half.
- 1:34:22And they take over at their own 36 yard line.
- 1:34:25First that's set for the Vikings. Parkinson lines the wide receivers left. Gives off a handoff to Chuck Foreman who comes off left tackle.
- 1:34:32He's been hit up for about three yards before he is hit by Dennis Harrison and Charlie Johnson.
- 1:34:37Dennis Harrison there's a defensive ender rookie who comes out of Vanderbilt and I am amazed at the improvement in Dennis.
- 1:34:43This summer Jim watching him at training camp I got the feeling that Dennis just had a lot to learn.
- 1:34:47The innate ability was there as the coaching staff said but he is learning in a hurry.
- 1:34:51Dennis had a funny line at the Bakers Club last week. The Bakers Club honored Carl Harrison as the defensive eagle of the year.
- 1:34:57And Dennis said hey we got three games to go and I'm really coming on.
- 1:35:01He is. He is. Jack Edelstein tells us that Foreman carried nine times for 42 yards.
- 1:35:06The handoff again goes to Foreman and this time he comes forward but not much.
- 1:35:10Bill Berge makes the stop and Foreman goes down at about the 40.
- 1:35:14The yard marker is becoming more and more difficult to read as the field is becoming more and more white.
- 1:35:21They do a good job of keeping the snow off the field before the game.
- 1:35:25As we told you before they have blowers underneath the top and the field may get icy but it does not get white.
- 1:35:31But right now the green is being replaced. It is a third down of the sixth and the wide receiver split.
- 1:35:37Handoff by the delay to Foreman. Off the tackle and forward he goes.
- 1:35:41Boltsam and deals on a Viking first down. Carl Harrison makes the stop.
- 1:35:46That's why Parkinson set up the pass. He went to Foreman and Foreman did the rest.
- 1:35:50Well that's what makes the guy such a great quarterback. There is no way you can figure him out.
- 1:35:55He throws the football all over the place for two periods and then starts out in what looks like an obvious passing situation here
- 1:36:01and tucks it into his big running back who gets the first down.
- 1:36:04That's absolutely right. He can have the worst game in the world and still find a way to beat you in the final second.
- 1:36:09Viking shows both wide receivers out to the near side. White in the slot.
- 1:36:13It gives off on a reverse and around with the football comes Ricky Young.
- 1:36:16Ricky Young goes down inside the down about the forty-six yard line.
- 1:36:21Ricky Young was the recipient that time of a reverse.
- 1:36:25It was Robert Miller taking the handoff giving off to Ricky Young as he raced to his left.
- 1:36:29Young turned it back to the right, crossed midfield and came down to the forty-six yard line of the Eagles.
- 1:36:35But all things considering the Eagles did a pretty good job of containing that and stopping it for a minimum game.
- 1:36:41It is a second down of three. That could have been trouble right there.
- 1:36:45Parkinson spins, gives off inside and down goes Robert Miller.
- 1:36:50Robert Miller gains very little right there.
- 1:36:54And Ricky Young, you just have to think he's not even the best runner in his own family.
- 1:36:58He's got a pretty famous nephew by the name of Walter Payton.
- 1:37:01Both uncle and nephew played in the same college backfield.
- 1:37:04Jackson State. Good. He's got a famous cousin to Robert Brazil, the linebacker for the Houston Oilers.
- 1:37:12Ricky Young, just one of the guys.
- 1:37:15No start for him when the family gets together.
- 1:37:18Third down of three. We're in the third quarter.
- 1:37:20Eight minutes and fifty-seven seconds remaining in that third quarter.
- 1:37:23The Eagles on top of the Vikings, twenty-seven to fourteen.
- 1:37:26The Vikings have the football. The Eagles forty-six.
- 1:37:28Parkinson. Fires in the flat.
- 1:37:30Good for Miller.
- 1:37:31Miller at the thirty-five and down to the forty.
- 1:37:34Miller took it at the forty-five and went down to the forty and has the first down.
- 1:37:38Ken Clark makes the stop, but that time the play was well disguised.
- 1:37:43As Parkinson looked downfield, he pumped one that went out to Robert Miller in the flat, who took it at the forty-five and went down to the forty.
- 1:37:51He is just inside the forty actually of the Eagle. Thirty-nine yard line.
- 1:37:54And the Vikings have another first down.
- 1:37:57The clock now shows eight eighteen.
- 1:37:59Vikings mounting a drive.
- 1:38:01The last time at the end of the first half when they came close, it was very near the saving interceptor.
- 1:38:06The defense wants another big play.
- 1:38:08As Parkinson on play action drops.
- 1:38:10Set. Goes over the middle. Incomplete.
- 1:38:13Excellent defensive play by Herman Edwards.
- 1:38:16The pass was intended on a post pattern to Ahmad Rashad.
- 1:38:20And Herman Edwards came up and knocked out the arm and knocked out the football. Incomplete.
- 1:38:25That was about the only thing he could do. Rashad cut across the middle, had some room and tucked himself, tucked his body down low, getting ready to receive the ball.
- 1:38:32And Herman Edwards came in from the rear, tucked his arm around and poked it free.
- 1:38:36We spoke of Parkinson floating the ball earlier in the game. He did not float that one.
- 1:38:40He drilled the pass. But Herman Edwards did the job.
- 1:38:43It's a second down. A ten for the Vikings.
- 1:38:45The eagle. Thirty-nine. The wide receivers are split.
- 1:38:48As Parkinson drops. Still dropping. Fires over the middle.
- 1:38:51Complete to the tight end. Bob Copper who tumbles the football forward.
- 1:38:55The football is retained by the Vikings. Robert Miller.
- 1:38:58And down he goes. They were putting three yard lines.
- 1:39:01The pass is caught by Bob Tucker. He was hit.
- 1:39:05The ball popped out of his arm into the arms of Robert Miller who took it down to the eagle twenty-two.
- 1:39:11A year ago that probably would not have been legal.
- 1:39:14But this is 1978. It counts for Vikings of a first down there at the eagle twenty-two.
- 1:39:20And some good reaction too by the eagles there. That play on that play could have very easily, Mr. Miller could have tied it down there for a touchdown.
- 1:39:28Eagles go with five defensive backs. But this time it is a spinning handoff.
- 1:39:32So Miller and Miller come to the twenty.
- 1:39:34And maybe, maybe gets to the nineteen. But not much more before Charlie Johnson stops him right there.
- 1:39:40But the Vikings are moving the football.
- 1:39:42They picked up about two. We have seven minutes and three seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:39:47Eagles leading the Vikings twenty-seven-fourteen.
- 1:39:49Johnny Atlaw is in the ball game for the eagles in place of Bobby Lee Howard.
- 1:39:54So it is Atlaw, Logan, Sharrah and Edwards in the deep secondary for the eagles.
- 1:39:59Bobby Lee Howard lint off. John Atlaw in his place.
- 1:40:02Second down the pace. Parkinson. Play action. Looking. Looking left.
- 1:40:07Firing deep into the end zone. Pass batted in the air off the hands of Ahmad Rashad incomplete.
- 1:40:13Herman Edwards again at good position. Rashad had a shot of it but it went off his hands.
- 1:40:18But Herman Edwards is having a tremendous game.
- 1:40:21That time Parkinson looked first to Rashad then pumped the other way and wanted to go to Sammy White.
- 1:40:26Sammy White was covered by Johnny Atlaw as the Vikings tried to exploit Atlaw who just came into the game.
- 1:40:31So back he goes to Rashad and he just throws the ball higher in the air figuring that Ahmad can out jump most people and catch the ball.
- 1:40:37But that time Herman Edwards got up and blocked it.
- 1:40:39Big third date for the Vikings. So poor Robert Miller.
- 1:40:43And Ryan Church, Ricky Young. It was so continuous to come harder.
- 1:40:47Third and eight. Parkinson back setting. Looking. Fires the flat to Foreman.
- 1:40:51In the way from the man at the 20. 15. 10. Chuck Foreman down at the eight.
- 1:40:56Boogie makes the stop. But Chuck Foreman takes the short pass.
- 1:41:00Comes away from one man. Cut down shot at the 15. And takes it down to the eight.
- 1:41:05First and goal for the Vikings.
- 1:41:07Had a great call that time by Frank Tachin and Drew Mihalek the right corner linebacker on a blitz that time.
- 1:41:13He just jumped it right over Drew's head into Chuck Foreman's hands who had gone to that vacated area and then just used his great athletic ability to work it downfield.
- 1:41:21And the snow is starting to come down much harder.
- 1:41:23Parkinson joins all the experience right now.
- 1:41:26First and goal to go for the Vikings at the eagle eight.
- 1:41:29In the loft. Inside. It goes to Ricky Young and he does not reach the five.
- 1:41:34He goes down about the six yard line making the stop.
- 1:41:37Frank LeMaster and Charlie Johnson.
- 1:41:41A pick up on the play of only about.
- 1:41:43Well they say about three and a half or four yards as they spot the football forward checking where he is forward.
- 1:41:49Progress came to an end.
- 1:41:51So they spotted at the six yard line.
- 1:41:53Second down and goal to go for the Vikings from the six.
- 1:41:575.22 remaining in the third quarter. Eagles leading the Vikings.
- 1:42:0127.14. Parkinson.
- 1:42:03Rolling. Rolling. Rolling. Right mopped the pass to Ricky Young.
- 1:42:06Parkinson. The Ricky Young at the Vikings store.
- 1:42:13Parkinson rolled to his right.
- 1:42:18Kept pumping the arm. Pumping the arm.
- 1:42:20Looking for Ricky Young.
- 1:42:22He loosed a little pass. Young ran under it for two and took it in.
- 1:42:27And now it's a 27-20 game.
- 1:42:29The Vikings come within seven and they can come within six with the extra point right here.
- 1:42:34Dan Meyer in. Crouched the hold.
- 1:42:37Up the step.
- 1:42:43So the Vikings trying for the extra point.
- 1:42:46The kick is up. There's a flag on the play.
- 1:42:49The kick is good.
- 1:42:52There is a flag on the play.
- 1:42:55The kick was good and I believe it will probably be an offside against one of the Eagles this time.
- 1:43:00Let's wait and see.
- 1:43:0212 men on the field.
- 1:43:04Defense.
- 1:43:05The point is drawn.
- 1:43:07Five yards on the kickoff.
- 1:43:10Well it is 12 men on the field. The Eagles had 12 men on the field.
- 1:43:14I think they would have tried 14.
- 1:43:16But they should have gotten away with it. But they had 12 men on the field that time.
- 1:43:19The kick is up. The kick is good.
- 1:43:21Here's a timeout on the field with the score. The Eagles 27. The Vikings 21.
- 1:43:25Hike.
- 1:43:29The Vikings will kick off to the Eagles. Dan Meyer approaches the football.
- 1:43:33With the penalty tacked on he kicks off to the 40.
- 1:43:35It is going deep. It is taken by Jamona at the 4.
- 1:43:3810. Jamona at the 15. Jamona to the 20.
- 1:43:42And they finally bring the wiggling Louie Jamona down at the 25 or 26 yard line.
- 1:43:47Scott Studwell makes the stop. They had Louie at about the 22.
- 1:43:51And all of a sudden coming out from under a pound with Louie Jamona for an additional four yards.
- 1:43:56The Eagles will put the football in play first and then at their own 26.
- 1:44:00The 22 yard return by Louie Jamona.
- 1:44:03But the Vikings are within a touchdown. A touchdown and they take the lead.
- 1:44:07At extra points the Eagles miss just before the half could hurt.
- 1:44:10The Eagles leading the Vikings 27 to 21.
- 1:44:14Lock and then took them down on a tremendous drive.
- 1:44:17Now the Eagles back on offense with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:44:21DeWarty splits the wide receivers. The running backs are in an eye.
- 1:44:25Now they shift out of it into a set right.
- 1:44:27In motion to the far side goes Charlie Smith.
- 1:44:30As DeWarty turns and gives off an off-left tackle comes Grover Montgomery and he crosses the 30.
- 1:44:35And comes up to about the 32 yard line.
- 1:44:38James White makes the stop. A good block by Tom Lukin.
- 1:44:42Giving Grover some running room and Grover picked up six.
- 1:44:45Throw it second down and four.
- 1:44:484.42 remaining to be played here in the third quarter.
- 1:44:52The snow. One moment it comes down hard.
- 1:44:55Then it eases up for another.
- 1:44:57The field very, very icy.
- 1:44:59Second down and a long four.
- 1:45:01Wide receivers split. Running back to the open set.
- 1:45:04DeWarty looking. Dropping.
- 1:45:06Setting. Going over the middle.
- 1:45:08Looking for Carmichael. Almost intercepted. Incomplete.
- 1:45:11Almost intercepted by Tom Haddon who had the best shot at it.
- 1:45:15DeWarty wanted Carmichael on that left sideline. It did not work.
- 1:45:19He made short as Howard Carmichael beat Bobby Bryant and then Ron Jaworski tried to lay it in there.
- 1:45:24But Tom Haddon came over and great reaction that time.
- 1:45:26It broke it up almost. Intercepted it.
- 1:45:29He had the angle on it. And to most effectively run that pass with Carmichael you have to throw it up there a bit.
- 1:45:35And if it isn't thrown highly the linebacker or the defensive back or safety in this case can come over and get that angle.
- 1:45:42And he did just that. A two down and five for the Eagles. They have the ball at their own 31.
- 1:45:47The running backs are split. The wide receivers are split.
- 1:45:50Jaworski back. Setting. Looking up the middle. He's going to run.
- 1:45:53Jaworski to the 35 and he slides down at the 38 yard line.
- 1:45:57He has just enough for an eagle first down.
- 1:46:00So Jaworski took the drop. He saw the center of the field wide open.
- 1:46:04And he rolls upfield. But there is a flag down at the 25 yard line.
- 1:46:09And I think it's going to be holding against the Eagles.
- 1:46:11Well the Vikings are certainly raising their fist in jubilation to indicate that it is against the Eagles.
- 1:46:15And now we see that it is as both teams are walking back.
- 1:46:18Back towards the 20 yard line.
- 1:46:21Well that's going to hurt.
- 1:46:23No question about that as they step off the penalty yardage because Jaworski did have a first down.
- 1:46:29Instead they will spot the football at the Eagles 21.
- 1:46:33So it will give him.
- 1:46:35Holding number 76. Offense. Third down.
- 1:46:40So holding penalty against Gary Sizemore and it's going to bring up a third down in about 15 and a half.
- 1:46:48As they get close to the 37 yard line.
- 1:46:52This time they go with three wide receivers. Carl Michael Winnis knocked to the left.
- 1:46:56Outside of him is Kenny Payne. Out to the far side is Charlie Smith.
- 1:47:00The running backs are wide open.
- 1:47:02On the long count. Jaworski back. Set.
- 1:47:05Bing right. Loads to his right. Flies go down. Fires incomplete.
- 1:47:11As intended for Willard Montgomery. The flies go over the place.
- 1:47:15And it could be a holding penalty on the Eagles again.
- 1:47:18But I wouldn't blame an offensive lineman who was caught for holding right there.
- 1:47:23Because I'll tell you. All kinds of people had shots at Jaworski.
- 1:47:27They had all kinds of shots at him.
- 1:47:29And it was a desperation move.
- 1:47:31And Jimmy had talked to most offensive linemen and they'll tell you when somebody has a clean shot at their quarterback.
- 1:47:36They're going to hold if that's the only way that they can use to keep them out.
- 1:47:40And the Eagles are suddenly backing themselves into some real trouble here.
- 1:47:43They're now huddling near the end zone.
- 1:47:45The ball of the line is scrimmage is going to be at about the 10 yard line.
- 1:47:48Coming out to the 11.
- 1:47:52Of course there's a third long here. Third and 25 actually for a first down.
- 1:47:56And the 75.
- 1:48:01Even a great punt is going to give the Vikings a very fine field position to start another drive.
- 1:48:06And they only need seven points to go ahead in this ball game.
- 1:48:09The Eagles have now been penalized eight times for 94 yards.
- 1:48:12The Vikings have seven penalties.
- 1:48:14At the third and 25.
- 1:48:16The Eagles put the ball on their own 12 yard line.
- 1:48:18They lead the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:48:21We have 4-0-4 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:48:23As DeWorsky has a three wide receivers in the four game.
- 1:48:26He dropped. He gives. That is a late Montgomery.
- 1:48:29The 10. The 15. He stumbles at the 16 and goes down hard.
- 1:48:33And there is a flag again thrown back at the eight yard line.
- 1:48:37And again the Vikings yell and scream and it's against the Eagles.
- 1:48:42The Vikings having a ball right now.
- 1:48:46Showing happiness with every penalty flag.
- 1:48:50Wilbur took that football on the delay handoff and brought it up to the 17 yard line.
- 1:48:58Let's check the call.
- 1:49:00Holy number 76 offense.
- 1:49:04DeFaulding or some.
- 1:49:06This time it is against Jerry Seisbohr as you can hear.
- 1:49:10The referee said the officials had holding against the defense but he meant the offense.
- 1:49:14And now the Eagles will punt the football as the Vikings have declined.
- 1:49:17The Eagles have been having some trouble on their punting snaps.
- 1:49:20They've been high and unfortunately Mike Michelle is able to come up with them and get the points off.
- 1:49:23He'll take this snap inside his own five.
- 1:49:26Kevin Miller stands in midfield.
- 1:49:28Here's the snap. It's a good one.
- 1:49:30Michelle gets it away. It's high. It's floating. It's a fine punt.
- 1:49:34Backing up his mother at the 40. Coming to the 45.
- 1:49:37Splitting away from one man and down he goes at the 47 yard line.
- 1:49:40Eagles with a good job of containment.
- 1:49:42Again Louis Giamotto makes the stop.
- 1:49:45Here's the timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:49:47The Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:49:53Here in Bloomington, Minnesota we're getting set for what could be a very dramatic finish.
- 1:49:57The Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:50:00As yet there are three 47s remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:50:04But the Vikings showed some signs.
- 1:50:06Boy they had a great drive to come back and get that last touchdown.
- 1:50:09Now they have the ball again.
- 1:50:12The Vikings have their own 48 yard line.
- 1:50:15The snow drives down.
- 1:50:17Markenden splits the wide receiver.
- 1:50:19He goes with a pitch out the chuck for the new runs through his right.
- 1:50:21Wides the turn in the corner. He cannot.
- 1:50:23He is shoved out of bounds by a fast charging Dennis Harrison.
- 1:50:26And picks up only two yards. Jim Habbison scores.
- 1:50:29Well these are all finals. The Jets 24, Baltimore 16, Miami 16, Washington nothing.
- 1:50:34Cincinnati 37, Atlanta 7, Green Bay 17, Tampa 7.
- 1:50:40Los Angeles 20 and the New York Giants 17.
- 1:50:42And the Rams are in the playoff. They clinch their division, the Western Division of the NFC.
- 1:50:47Right here it's 27-21.
- 1:50:50Dennis Harrison showing very good quickness getting over there on that left outside.
- 1:50:53But the play was strung over by Reggie Wilkes.
- 1:50:56It is a second dominate for the Vikings. The ball just shy of midfield.
- 1:50:59In motion to the near side goes Ricky Young.
- 1:51:02Markenden back. Fires for that far sideline.
- 1:51:04Oh the lower taking the pass and for a shot.
- 1:51:07And he goes out of bounds at the eagle 33.
- 1:51:11I don't know how Rashad was that clear.
- 1:51:13But he was all alone over there on the far side.
- 1:51:17And Markenden found them and dropped the football in there for a 17 yard gain.
- 1:51:21And once again the Vikings are threatening.
- 1:51:25I think Drew Mihalek just lost his footing and couldn't get a very deep drop over there.
- 1:51:29And Herman Edwards protecting the deep zone.
- 1:51:32Had to play way off of Rashad.
- 1:51:34He had to fall down because he was that open.
- 1:51:37First and 10 for the Vikings.
- 1:51:39They have the football. It's the eagle 36.
- 1:51:41Markenden rolls right. Fires over the middle.
- 1:51:43Incomplete pass intended for Reggie Young at the 30.
- 1:51:46The pass goes off his hands as he was swarmed over.
- 1:51:50Hit by Reggie Wilkes but there is a flag down on the field.
- 1:51:53Down at the 16 yard line.
- 1:51:55And we'll have to wait and see what they call right here.
- 1:51:58They are motioning.
- 1:52:01Pass interference against the Vikings.
- 1:52:03And there is offensive pass interference being called against Ahmad Rashad who was on the right side that time.
- 1:52:09And now the Vikings will be penalized.
- 1:52:14Bobby Lee Howard I think was the defender in this case.
- 1:52:16You don't see that play called too often.
- 1:52:19But don't forget the new rules this year.
- 1:52:21Once outside that five yard zone the receiver cannot make contact with the defender either.
- 1:52:25That's what happened down there.
- 1:52:26It becomes almost a basketball thing.
- 1:52:29Number 28 offense Dale Forshaw.
- 1:52:35It's against Rashad. Rashad's had a fine afternoon.
- 1:52:37He has seven catches on the afternoon for 84 yards.
- 1:52:41But that time a penalty against him.
- 1:52:45Almost like a charging penalty in basketball.
- 1:52:48It's a first down and 20 for the Vikings.
- 1:52:50It's the 45 of the Eagles.
- 1:52:51Markenden wants to throw a first down.
- 1:52:53Goes left. Fires down the far sideline.
- 1:52:55Incomplete.
- 1:52:56Herman Edwards over there in coverage. Ahmad Rashad is the closest man to the ball.
- 1:53:00But Markenden was being rushed.
- 1:53:02And rather than eat the football or throw into a more dangerous territory he wisely fired it high into the yard out of bounds.
- 1:53:08Reggie Rooks and Dennis Harrison were pressuring him.
- 1:53:11We pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:53:13When the Eagles aren't playing.
- 1:53:15Second down and 20 for the Vikings.
- 1:53:17Second and 20 for the Vikings.
- 1:53:18Eagles leading 27 to 21.
- 1:53:20322 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:53:22Vikings with the ball at the Eagle.
- 1:53:2444. It's a draw play.
- 1:53:26And right up the middle goes Chuck Foreman.
- 1:53:28He comes across for 40.
- 1:53:30And he goes down to the 36 yard line before Reggie Rooks stops him.
- 1:53:34So Markenden mixing his plays beautifully right now.
- 1:53:37We saw how much he can confuse a defense on that last drive.
- 1:53:40On the first drive of the game he was about as effective as anybody could possibly be as he moved him right downfield.
- 1:53:46And on the first offensive series for the second half he did the same kind of thing.
- 1:53:50Precision football. Sir Francis Giles.
- 1:53:53Third down and 11 for the Vikings.
- 1:53:55The ball is spotted just inside the Eagle.
- 1:53:5735. Third and 11.
- 1:53:59The wide receivers are split.
- 1:54:01Manny White to the near side.
- 1:54:02Rashad to the far side.
- 1:54:03Markenden rolling left.
- 1:54:05Still rolling.
- 1:54:06Turns. Fires. Incomplete.
- 1:54:08Knocked down by Herman Edwards.
- 1:54:10Herman Edwards cut across the field and knocked down the ball that tended for Bob Tucker.
- 1:54:14Big defensive play.
- 1:54:15Another key defensive play for Herman who's been making them all afternoon.
- 1:54:19Another waggle pattern by Tucker that time he just tucked it under his arm and waggled out toward the sidelines for a while.
- 1:54:25Then set up and tried to find a receiver down there.
- 1:54:28Tried to drill that one and that's not French sound.
- 1:54:30Herman Edwards was able to react and knock it down.
- 1:54:33Very difficult to get the body behind the pass when you are rolling on this kind of icy turf.
- 1:54:37But Markenden did well there.
- 1:54:39John Carroll backs up.
- 1:54:41Greg Coleman in the game.
- 1:54:42He specializes in dropping punts inside the 20 yard line.
- 1:54:45Last year he was the best in the NFC in that.
- 1:54:48He gets the snap.
- 1:54:50He gets the pun away.
- 1:54:51He angles for the nearest sideline.
- 1:54:53It hits at the 5.
- 1:54:54No way.
- 1:54:55It goes in then out of the end zone.
- 1:54:56Greg Coleman I think I said he was the best in the NFC last year doing that.
- 1:55:00He was the best with the AFC last year.
- 1:55:02He was with the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:55:03And he was really an artist in getting it inside the 20.
- 1:55:06But that time he misses and will bring it out first and then for the Eagles.
- 1:55:09There's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:55:11The Eagles beating the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:55:14We've got a football game here in Bloomington today about as entertaining a game as you've seen in a long time.
- 1:55:20Two minutes and 29 seconds to be playing here in the third quarter.
- 1:55:24Eagles on top of the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:55:26Eagles with the football.
- 1:55:27They want a amount of drive here.
- 1:55:29Not a safe margin at all.
- 1:55:31Jim Worske lines up both wide receivers out to be a five-side.
- 1:55:34On first down he hands off inside and going straight off left tackle.
- 1:55:38River Montgomery is charging up to the 25 or 26-yard line marks the lady and Jeff Seaman makes the stop.
- 1:55:45But Wilbur is having himself quite a day on the afternoon.
- 1:55:48He has 91 yards.
- 1:55:49And we mentioned he needs only 100 to top the 1,000 mark.
- 1:55:52And no one's done that in an Eagle uniform since Steve Van Buren in 1949.
- 1:55:57Jack Emelson tells me he has 99 yards.
- 1:55:5999 on the afternoon.
- 1:56:01So he is one shy of that 1,000-yard mark.
- 1:56:05Second down and five for the Eagles.
- 1:56:07Jim Worske sets them up to be 26.
- 1:56:10Both wide receivers left.
- 1:56:12The handoff inside to Wilbur.
- 1:56:13Good yards and he crosses for 30 and comes up to the 32, up to the 33 or 34.
- 1:56:18And now Wilbur gets the 1,000 yards.
- 1:56:21Wilbur cutting inside right there and a good, good run.
- 1:56:25Good blocking making it possible.
- 1:56:27Sam Walters and Tom Lukin.
- 1:56:29They open that hole and whish went Wilbur.
- 1:56:33107 yards in the afternoon.
- 1:56:35124 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:56:38First and 10 for the Eagles.
- 1:56:4027-21 may lead the Vikings.
- 1:56:43Now flip-flopping over to the far side goes Richos for the tight end.
- 1:56:48Jim Worske to Montgomery on a sweep right.
- 1:56:50Gets away from one man.
- 1:56:51Tries to cut it back.
- 1:56:52Doesn't get any plays.
- 1:56:54Wilbur Montgomery started out to the far side.
- 1:56:57Tried to cut it back to the inside where the outside was closed.
- 1:57:01But the Vikings were there to grab him.
- 1:57:02And he goes no play.
- 1:57:04The Vikings really looking for that cutback move now out of Wilbur.
- 1:57:07He's already burned him once for one touchdown, a 36-yard run.
- 1:57:10And Fred McNeil, he's watching them all the time and anticipating that play.
- 1:57:15Well, they brought Richos over there to that far side to give him additional blocking.
- 1:57:20Now the wide receivers line up for the near side with Carmichael in the spot.
- 1:57:24Inside of Charlie Smith.
- 1:57:25The back to the wide open center.
- 1:57:26The second down and 10.
- 1:57:28Gimorsky had a little flutter to Montgomery at the 30.
- 1:57:31Montgomery cuts inside at the 35 and goes down at the 48.
- 1:57:35That's a 38.
- 1:57:36Montgomery took the pass.
- 1:57:38At the 30-yard line, drives his header inside.
- 1:57:40He crossed the 35.
- 1:57:42Came up to the 38-yard line.
- 1:57:44And then he was hit and dropped by Fred McNeil and Mark Melaney.
- 1:57:47So he does pick up six yards right there.
- 1:57:49But it brings up that third down and four and a half for third and five.
- 1:57:57And that is going to do it for the third quarter of the Guns Down.
- 1:58:00It is the third quarter.
- 1:58:01A time out on the field with the score.
- 1:58:03The Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:58:10At the end of the quarter today, the Eagles are leading the Vikings 14-7.
- 1:58:13That's the half they led the Vikings, 27-14.
- 1:58:16Now we have just passed the three-quarter mark and the Eagles are up 27-21.
- 1:58:20But all that counts is what the score reads at the end of this one.
- 1:58:24Getting set for action here in the fourth quarter.
- 1:58:27Story day in Bloomington, Minnesota, 27-21 the Eagles.
- 1:58:31They have themselves in a third and five.
- 1:58:33They have the ball at about the 38-yard line.
- 1:58:37Their own 38.
- 1:58:43Eagles breaking the huddle using three wide receivers.
- 1:58:47The Vikings go into the nickel defense.
- 1:58:49They have the extra defensive back.
- 1:58:51Carmichael in that slot to the right.
- 1:58:53Outside of him is Kenny Payne.
- 1:58:55He's got the left out to the far side, the back to the open set.
- 1:58:58As Gimorski turns and gives off on the draw.
- 1:59:01The Vikings have contained Wilbert Montgomery for little or no gain.
- 1:59:05They were reading at that time.
- 1:59:07The Eagles tried to go with the draw to Wilbert Montgomery.
- 1:59:10They set up to look for the pass.
- 1:59:12They went on the delight of Montgomery.
- 1:59:14And Jeff Seaman says, uh-uh, Wilbert, you stop right here.
- 1:59:17Kyle O'Hara, too, played a big role there.
- 1:59:19He took an inside loop and when he did that,
- 1:59:21he ran right into the hole and plugged things up and bumped right into Wilbert.
- 1:59:24So Mike Michelle with another pressure punt.
- 1:59:26Will await the snap at the 22-yard line.
- 1:59:29Kevin Miller deep for the Vikings.
- 1:59:31Michelle gets it off.
- 1:59:32It's high.
- 1:59:33It hangs.
- 1:59:34Miller comes over, backs up, takes it at the 25.
- 1:59:37Tries to turn up field, but he does not.
- 1:59:39Down he goes under a right sled by Terry DeToto.
- 1:59:42The Vikings will take over at the 25-yard line.
- 1:59:45There's a timeout on the field with the score.
- 1:59:47The Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 1:59:51Vikings are the first in 10.
- 1:59:53They're on the 27-yard line.
- 1:59:55They trail the Eagles 27-21.
- 1:59:57As Parkinson lines them up, he's 20 for 38, 181 yards.
- 2:00:00Three touchdowns, two intercepts.
- 2:00:03First in 10 for the Vikings.
- 2:00:04In most of the nearest line comes Ricky Young.
- 2:00:06Parkinson to throw in first down.
- 2:00:08Setting up, looking right, looking left.
- 2:00:10Pumping, fires the football out of bounds.
- 2:00:12Incomplete.
- 2:00:13Chuck Foreman was over there on the far side.
- 2:00:15Good pass right by Carl Harrison, who was in there on Parkinson.
- 2:00:19Forced him to scramble.
- 2:00:20The Eagles defensive backs did a good job that time.
- 2:00:23Tuckenden wanted to find Ricky Young that time.
- 2:00:25Young went in motion to this side of the field.
- 2:00:27Armand Rashad cleared the zone.
- 2:00:30Drew Mahalek came right up and played Young nose-to-nose.
- 2:00:33Tuckenden couldn't throw it across field with Mahalek that close.
- 2:00:36Then he almost ate the ball and then threw it away.
- 2:00:39It is second in 10 for the Vikings.
- 2:00:41Wide receivers are split.
- 2:00:43The running back to the open set again.
- 2:00:45In motion to the nearest side comes Ricky Young.
- 2:00:47He's got the handoff inside, but the Eagles lead it and Chuck Foreman is dropped to 3-27.
- 2:00:52Eagles right at the perfection of Bill Berge surrounds them.
- 2:00:56Drops Chuck Foreman.
- 2:00:58No gain on the play.
- 2:00:59So again, Jim, there was the motion.
- 2:01:01Ricky Young coming out to that nearest side,
- 2:01:03trying to get some running room in the middle or create something.
- 2:01:06And it didn't work.
- 2:01:07Chuck Foreman was there for the handoff,
- 2:01:09but Bill Berge was there to receive Chuck Foreman.
- 2:01:12It is third and nine for the Vikings.
- 2:01:14Rashad lines up to the nearest side.
- 2:01:16White to the far side.
- 2:01:17Huckenden back.
- 2:01:18Setting.
- 2:01:19Looking.
- 2:01:20Fires the ball over the middle.
- 2:01:21And the pass is complete.
- 2:01:23Complete.
- 2:01:24Company 45.
- 2:01:25Your mind is standing white for a Viking first down.
- 2:01:28Rashad by Sammy White.
- 2:01:30Had to take it almost on his back.
- 2:01:33Pass.
- 2:01:34Greer barely reached him.
- 2:01:35Barely reached him, but he did get his hands on it for a 16-yard gain.
- 2:01:40Big completion right there for the Vikings.
- 2:01:42That hurts.
- 2:01:45First and 10 for the Vikings.
- 2:01:46They move upfield.
- 2:01:47They have the football at the road.
- 2:01:4944-yard line.
- 2:01:50They trail the Eagles 27-21.
- 2:01:52We have 12-58 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:01:55Huckenden just throwing first down.
- 2:01:57Scrambles left.
- 2:01:58Scrambles right.
- 2:01:59Close the pass over the middle and drops armlessly with nobody around it.
- 2:02:03And penned for Chuck Foreman, but it is incomplete.
- 2:02:07Dennis Harrison with good pressure.
- 2:02:09I tell you, Brad Huckenden going to his whole bag of tricks here,
- 2:02:11calling on all 18 years experience,
- 2:02:13just trying to pull off another touchdown here.
- 2:02:16That time he had nobody to throw to.
- 2:02:18Held the ball as long as he could to avoid that rush.
- 2:02:20And then finally dumped it off into an open area.
- 2:02:22And he always gets it close enough to a receiver to avoid the penalty.
- 2:02:26Well, the Vikings quarterback this season have been sacked 27 times.
- 2:02:30The Eagles would like to make that 28.
- 2:02:32They have not reached Prentice so far this afternoon.
- 2:02:34They have pressured him intensely a few times,
- 2:02:36but they haven't gotten them yet.
- 2:02:38They love him.
- 2:02:40Huckenden backs up.
- 2:02:41Second down and 10.
- 2:02:42Fires over the middle.
- 2:02:43Intercepted.
- 2:02:44Intercepted by the Eagles.
- 2:02:45Randy Logan and he turns it back up.
- 2:02:47He goes down at the Viking 46 yard line.
- 2:02:50First down for the Eagles.
- 2:02:52Big play.
- 2:02:53The pass was intended for Sammy White.
- 2:02:55Randy Logan steps in front of Sammy White.
- 2:02:58Picked up the interception.
- 2:03:00There is a timeout on the field with the score.
- 2:03:02The Eagles 27, the Vikings 21.
- 2:03:05First and 10 for the first.
- 2:03:07Jaworski lines up with both wide receivers left.
- 2:03:09On play action.
- 2:03:10He dropped.
- 2:03:11He fires over the middle.
- 2:03:12Incomplete.
- 2:03:13Intended for either Rick Josborn or Harold Carmichael,
- 2:03:16but it almost ended up in the hands of Tom Hannon,
- 2:03:19and there had to be a mistake there in the pattern.
- 2:03:22Right.
- 2:03:23Two receivers, Carmichael and Rick Josborn,
- 2:03:25much too close together there.
- 2:03:26Ordinarily, Harold Carmichael on that play squares down
- 2:03:29and runs maybe a 10 yard pattern.
- 2:03:31That time he was 20 yards downfield.
- 2:03:33I don't even think Harold expected the football either
- 2:03:35as it sailed right by him.
- 2:03:36One of the Vikings down on the play,
- 2:03:38one of the guys in the deep secondary.
- 2:03:40It is Tom Hannon who was back there in cover.
- 2:03:42He's the man who almost intercepted the football.
- 2:03:44Jim, while they take a look at Hannon
- 2:03:46and straighten him back to his feet,
- 2:03:48how about us taking a look at the board?
- 2:03:49Well, a lot of things going well
- 2:03:51as far as the Eagles playoffs go.
- 2:03:53Atlanta Falcons got clobbered today by Cincinnati 37-7.
- 2:03:57The Washington Redskins were defeated 16-0
- 2:04:00by the Miami Dolphins.
- 2:04:02Green Bay 17 and Tampa Bay 7.
- 2:04:04The pack with a chance to go in the first place in NFC Central.
- 2:04:08If the Vikings cannot win this ballgame today,
- 2:04:11then the Vikings are in some trouble as far as playoffs go.
- 2:04:14Elsewhere today, San Francisco trails New Orleans right now 24-13.
- 2:04:18They're in the fourth quarter.
- 2:04:20The Giants were defeated by Los Angeles 20-17.
- 2:04:23Baltimore was defeated by the New York Jets 24-16.
- 2:04:26St. Louis goes ahead at Detroit in the fourth period 21-14.
- 2:04:30The hand here at Metropolitan Stadium is for Paul Crouse
- 2:04:35who comes in the game replacing Tom Hannon.
- 2:04:37Paul Crouse, a big favorite, a 15-year veteran,
- 2:04:40and he enters this game.
- 2:04:41He played very little this year, but he enters this game
- 2:04:43as he enters the season,
- 2:04:45needing one interception to tie the career interception record
- 2:04:48of Emlyn Tanell.
- 2:04:51Tanell has 79.
- 2:04:53Crouse has 78.
- 2:04:56But the Eagles would like to keep him from getting it against them.
- 2:04:59He can have all the interceptions he wants next week
- 2:05:02when the Vikings visit Detroit.
- 2:05:04But this week, the Eagles want some more points.
- 2:05:07They lead 27-21.
- 2:05:09They have a second down at 10.
- 2:05:10They have the football.
- 2:05:11The Vikings 46.
- 2:05:13Wide receivers split.
- 2:05:14Jaworski on play action.
- 2:05:16Drops back.
- 2:05:17Brooks has the pass batted into the air incomplete.
- 2:05:20Almost intercepted.
- 2:05:22The pass was batted into the air
- 2:05:24and almost picked off by the Vikings.
- 2:05:27I believe it went off the hands of Mark Bellini,
- 2:05:30and it was almost picked off by Matt Flair.
- 2:05:33Fortunately for the Eagles, it hits the turf
- 2:05:35armlessly at about the 40-yard line.
- 2:05:38So instead of a Viking interception,
- 2:05:40and that would have been critical,
- 2:05:42the Eagles have a third and 10.
- 2:05:43Ken Payne, wide receiver, the third wide receiver
- 2:05:45coming in with a play here.
- 2:05:47Out goes Rich Asbork.
- 2:05:49Three wide receivers.
- 2:05:51Third and 10 for the Eagles.
- 2:05:53They have the ball at the Vikings 46-yard line.
- 2:05:5612-32 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:05:58Eagles up by six.
- 2:06:00Oh, Michael, all by his momentum on the near side.
- 2:06:03Jaworski looking.
- 2:06:04Fires down the far side.
- 2:06:06Incomplete.
- 2:06:07Intended for Ken Payne, who had beaten this man.
- 2:06:11Ken Payne was open momentarily,
- 2:06:13but the pass by Jaworski's
- 2:06:15skidded by his outspread arms.
- 2:06:17Incomplete.
- 2:06:19Jaworski looks down and kicks the dirt or the ice
- 2:06:22or whatever is down there and frustration
- 2:06:24drops off the field.
- 2:06:25So the Vikings will have the football once again,
- 2:06:28and Mike Michelle will be in to punt it.
- 2:06:30Kevin Miller drops back.
- 2:06:32He'll be the returner for the Vikings,
- 2:06:34standing at his own 14-yard line.
- 2:06:36The rush comes, but Michelle beats it
- 2:06:38with a high floating punt that hits on the five
- 2:06:41and goes out of bounds on the three.
- 2:06:43A tremendous punt by Mike Michelle,
- 2:06:46who has been punting with just that kind of pressure
- 2:06:49all afternoon, and he drives it inside the Vikings five.
- 2:06:53Vince Papale's so happy he did a surf slide
- 2:06:55down in the snow down there,
- 2:06:56running down under that punt.
- 2:06:57The Vikings are on the three-yard line,
- 2:06:59and if Brad Tuckerton's going to put it up here,
- 2:07:01he's really a gutsy quarterback.
- 2:07:02A 42-yard punt that time by Michelle.
- 2:07:06Yeah, we have seen Michelle so often
- 2:07:08since he came to the Eagles in critical situations,
- 2:07:10and he always seems to come through.
- 2:07:13Nick Vermeer has often said that he's not comfortable
- 2:07:16in getting Mike Michelle because he's an athlete
- 2:07:18who has played other positions.
- 2:07:19He was a strong safety at Stanford.
- 2:07:21He's right in the football game at all times,
- 2:07:23and he's doing a job this afternoon.
- 2:07:25First and ten, and Tuckerton wants to throw from his own end
- 2:07:28on, fires it in the air incomplete.
- 2:07:31Intended for a Bob Rashad somewhere over there
- 2:07:33on the right side.
- 2:07:34The pass did not come within 15 yards of him.
- 2:07:37It goes out of bounds over everybody on the sideline.
- 2:07:39And the Vikings have a second down and ten.
- 2:07:42Brad Tuckerton just gambling there that maybe Rashad
- 2:07:44will be played very loosely and pick up an easy 10-yard game,
- 2:07:47but Rashad, that was not the case at all.
- 2:07:49He was watched very closely by Bobby Hart,
- 2:07:51and I think Brad just threw that one into the stands
- 2:07:53or into the Viking bench, as it were.
- 2:07:55Tuckerton has 43 attempts this afternoon.
- 2:08:0043 attempts.
- 2:08:01Second down, and he fires again, and this time on a screen
- 2:08:04left to Sandy White, who cuts back inside,
- 2:08:07flies to the running room, flies it at the 10,
- 2:08:09and comes up to the 15 for a first down.
- 2:08:12Sandy White on the screen left, the Eagles had him at the 10,
- 2:08:15but he kept moving the legs, and he five-steps,
- 2:08:18and five-steps, and five-steps, and finally found
- 2:08:21right in the room to come up to the 15, the Vikings first down.
- 2:08:25So the Vikings put the ball in the air,
- 2:08:27and they come out of trouble.
- 2:08:29For the moment, they do.
- 2:08:31First and 10 for the Vikings, the ball to throw at the 15.
- 2:08:35Wide receivers over there on the far side, Rashad,
- 2:08:38Tuckerton rolling right,
- 2:08:40flip throughs running back Young,
- 2:08:42and Young is thrown down for a loss inside the 15,
- 2:08:45down at the 14 by Dennis Harrison,
- 2:08:47and this may be Dennis' best day of the season.
- 2:08:50Well, on that play, Dennis Harrison's first responsibility
- 2:08:52was to pressure the quarterback, which he did,
- 2:08:54and then he turned around and tackled the receiver.
- 2:08:56What an afternoon for the young rookie out of Vanderbilt.
- 2:09:00Even speaking to Dennis, on the trips to practice,
- 2:09:03you can see the poise that he's gaining
- 2:09:05on almost a week-by-week basis,
- 2:09:07and he's playing his final defensive end this afternoon,
- 2:09:10as anybody has this season.
- 2:09:12He's just playing a great game. He really is.
- 2:09:14Second down and 11, following the loss of one,
- 2:09:16and Tuckerton to the air again.
- 2:09:18He goes to the nearest side to Rashad,
- 2:09:20who catches the pass, and then the Eagles bring him down
- 2:09:22for a short gain inside the 20,
- 2:09:24down at about the 17-yard line, Frank Lamasher.
- 2:09:27The pass was drilled down to Rashad.
- 2:09:29He tried to give ground, look for running room.
- 2:09:31He didn't find it.
- 2:09:33He tried to pull the same maneuver that Sammy White turned into
- 2:09:35a first down, and that time it didn't work,
- 2:09:37and he actually lost a couple of yards in trying to do it.
- 2:09:40If ever there is a quarterback who can come up
- 2:09:43with these critical third downs,
- 2:09:45it's Mr. Tuckerton out there.
- 2:09:4845% of the time they've converted on third downs.
- 2:09:51Robert Miller comes in the ball game as the third eight
- 2:09:53for the Vikings, as Tuckerton drops.
- 2:09:55Tuckerton looks. Tuckerton rolls.
- 2:09:57Fires over across the middle. Incomplete lockdown by Randy Logan.
- 2:10:01Intended for the tight end, Bob Tucker.
- 2:10:03Great job by Randy, and the Vikings will have to punt.
- 2:10:08While you talk about quarterbacks who come up with the clutch plays,
- 2:10:11Tuckerton does so often, but the Eagles defense
- 2:10:14has been coming up with the clutch plays today
- 2:10:16and for so many Sundays.
- 2:10:18Brand rolled out to his right that time and tried to throw back
- 2:10:20across the grain. Again, great coverage by Randy Logan.
- 2:10:23The Vikings putting now from inside their five yard line.
- 2:10:26As far as pass coverage is concerned,
- 2:10:28this might be Randy's outstanding game of the season.
- 2:10:31Goldman in the punt, coupling the feet nervously,
- 2:10:34awaiting the snap. He gets it.
- 2:10:36No pressure by the Eagles. He gets it off.
- 2:10:38It is high and fluttering as Jarrett takes it into three.
- 2:10:41He is hit in a hurry by Harry Washington,
- 2:10:45who went down and swabbered John Sharer
- 2:10:47seconds after the football touched his hand.
- 2:10:50So the Eagles will operate after that 37 yard punt.
- 2:10:53First and 10 for the Eagles, the ball on their own, 46.
- 2:10:56Some other scores. Seattle running it up against Cleveland.
- 2:10:5921 to nothing in the second period.
- 2:11:01New England 7 and Dallas 3 there in the first period.
- 2:11:03Pittsburgh 3 and Houston 0. That one just starting.
- 2:11:06And another final in now. Kansas City 14 and Buffalo 10.
- 2:11:10New Orleans 14, San Francisco 13 there in the fourth period.
- 2:11:14Jim Jaworski is going to be out of the game right now.
- 2:11:17He bruised his hand, we understand, in that last series.
- 2:11:20And John Walton, his backup is in the game.
- 2:11:23Jim Gallagher stops in to tell us.
- 2:11:25Now the Eagles are going to have to go with John Walton.
- 2:11:27John Walton is a quarterback with out-much game experience
- 2:11:30in the National Football League.
- 2:11:32But he has one of the strongest right arms.
- 2:11:34He is a guy who works very hard.
- 2:11:36He studies his game film.
- 2:11:38Dick Vermeel has said repeatedly, I think the Eagles are very fortunate
- 2:11:41to have a backup man as capable as John Walton.
- 2:11:44Well, John Walton is a very likeable guy who has certainly
- 2:11:46slipped in a lot of time and doesn't get very much credit
- 2:11:48and doesn't get very much recognition.
- 2:11:50It will be a great opportunity and a great boost for the whole club
- 2:11:53to see John come in here and get the Eagles to more points.
- 2:11:55They sure love to have more points and make the Vikings have to score at least twice.
- 2:12:00We have 10 minutes and 2 seconds remaining to be played in this game.
- 2:12:03The Vikings offense has had their chances.
- 2:12:06A couple of big Eagles punt plays have started the Vikings back
- 2:12:10pretty far in their own territory.
- 2:12:12That last one, that last drive, made them start at their 3 and they took it out.
- 2:12:15But now the Eagles want to sustain some offense.
- 2:12:17They want to eat up some seconds.
- 2:12:19There are 10 minutes and 2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:12:21The Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 2:12:24Here's Walton's first play with the Eagles having the ball on their own 46.
- 2:12:28He turns and gives to Montgomery who finds running room off left tackle.
- 2:12:31Montgomery across midfield.
- 2:12:33Montgomery down to the Vikings 48.
- 2:12:35Red McNeil makes the stop.
- 2:12:37You talk about the passing.
- 2:12:39You talk about going from Jaworski to Walton.
- 2:12:41You talk about the timing with receivers.
- 2:12:43But one thing you have to remember is there is a great deal of timing on the very handoff play itself.
- 2:12:48Absolutely. Of course these conditions don't make it any easier.
- 2:12:51Wilbert looked like Luke Dupont going through that line that time.
- 2:12:54Second down and four. The Eagles in a spot left.
- 2:12:56Osborne the tight end, strong right.
- 2:12:58The backs in an open set behind John Walton.
- 2:13:00Who puts Charlie Smith in motion to the near side.
- 2:13:03Then he turns and gives off to Hogan who finds big running room.
- 2:13:06And he cracks down inside the Viking 40.
- 2:13:08Down to the Viking 38.
- 2:13:10Good blocks by Sam Walters and Tom Lueken and Guy Morris.
- 2:13:13And now the Eagles have a first down there on the move.
- 2:13:16The snow continues to fall.
- 2:13:189-0-8 remaining to be played here in the fourth quarter.
- 2:13:21The Eagles leading the Minnesota Vikings 27-21.
- 2:13:24They want some more points.
- 2:13:26They want at least three more.
- 2:13:28The Vikings can tie them with one touchdown and take the lead with a touchdown and an extra point.
- 2:13:32So the Eagles want more.
- 2:13:34John Walton and the Rick Forteback trying to drive them in.
- 2:13:37He splits the wide receivers. He splits the running backs.
- 2:13:40Now in motion to the near side comes Charlie Smith.
- 2:13:43Walton turns.
- 2:13:44Gives to Montgomery who comes off left tackle for short yardage.
- 2:13:47It may be a gain of two but not much more.
- 2:13:50Fred McNeil makes the stop.
- 2:13:52Eagles pecking away here getting three yards at a clip.
- 2:13:54And of course eating up that clock.
- 2:13:568-27 to go now. They've already killed them.
- 2:13:58Better than three minutes on this drive.
- 2:14:01It's a second down and eight.
- 2:14:05Football sitting in the mud at the center of the field.
- 2:14:10But it's inside the Viking 40 down at the 37 yard line.
- 2:14:13It is a second down and eight.
- 2:14:15Walton running the series has yet to draw a pass.
- 2:14:18Carl Michael out to the near side.
- 2:14:20Out to the far side of Smith.
- 2:14:22The back shift out of an eye.
- 2:14:23They're in an open set with Montgomery right.
- 2:14:25Hogan left.
- 2:14:26Hand off to Hogan who bounces off one man but then the Vikings have him and they score back.
- 2:14:30Tom Hannon makes the stop.
- 2:14:32Hooked out by Matt Flair.
- 2:14:34So that time John Walton tried to make the pink pass go with the delayed hand off that has worked in the past for Mike Hogan.
- 2:14:41But that time it does not.
- 2:14:43It'll bring up a third down and eight.
- 2:14:45And this time Walton will almost surely put the football in the air.
- 2:14:48Kenny Payne comes to the game and the Eagles will try it with three wide receivers.
- 2:14:52As Richard Osborne trots out.
- 2:14:54Third down and eight.
- 2:14:56Seven and a half minutes in the fourth quarter.
- 2:14:58Twenty-seven, twenty-one the Eagles.
- 2:15:00Payne comes out to the near side.
- 2:15:02Carl Michael in that slot.
- 2:15:03Smith out to the far side.
- 2:15:05Backs in a wider from set.
- 2:15:07Walton with his biggest play.
- 2:15:09He's dropping. He's setting.
- 2:15:10He fires the pass. Incomplete.
- 2:15:12And tended at the near side to Mike Hogan.
- 2:15:15Even if he caught it he would not have had the yardage for a first down.
- 2:15:19Bill Wise is over there in coverage but Hogan will fall back.
- 2:15:22Reach down. The ball went off his chest.
- 2:15:24Incomplete. The Eagles will have to punt.
- 2:15:26Hogan didn't get set up very well that time.
- 2:15:28He was still backpedaling when he threw that football.
- 2:15:30And that's a heck of a way to have to throw a completion.
- 2:15:32He threw it low in the ground and the Eagles are going to be punting here.
- 2:15:35He was and the Joe will take the step.
- 2:15:37From Dennis Franks at his own forty-eight yard line.
- 2:15:41Gets the punt away.
- 2:15:43It's high.
- 2:15:44Kevin Miller watches it.
- 2:15:45It bounces at the ten.
- 2:15:47And they will mark it at the ten yard line.
- 2:15:49Eric Johnson was down there in coverage.
- 2:15:52But the punt goes out of bounds just inside the ten yard line.
- 2:15:55And Mike Michelle puts the twenty-seven yarder out of bounds.
- 2:15:59And he does the job again.
- 2:16:00That is twice in succession.
- 2:16:02That Mike Michelle has made the Vikings start their drive inside the ten.
- 2:16:06Last time the three. This time the nine.
- 2:16:09What a beautiful place for a turnover here, Murrell.
- 2:16:12Trash talking indicated on that last drive that he'll throw it from anywhere.
- 2:16:15He threw two passes out of his own end zone.
- 2:16:17And got the team out from that field position when they were starting on their own three.
- 2:16:22So he's going to put it off.
- 2:16:24He's been intercepted three times.
- 2:16:26But usually when he's under the most pressure he seems to perform it the best.
- 2:16:30He does that.
- 2:16:32He has Ricky Young in there of one running back.
- 2:16:34Chuck Foreman the other.
- 2:16:36Works most of the day with those two.
- 2:16:37Although we have seen Robert Miller on occasion.
- 2:16:40They've stayed pretty much with the same guys.
- 2:16:42Some odd Rushon and Sammy White.
- 2:16:44Sammy White playing an excellent game.
- 2:16:45Rushon has made some big catches.
- 2:16:47Sammy White has received a couple of touchdowns.
- 2:16:50Ricky Young has a touchdown reception.
- 2:16:52As far as the Eagles are concerned a couple of touchdown passes to Harold Carmichael.
- 2:16:5736 yard run by Wilbur Montgomery.
- 2:17:02Charlie Smith has the other Eagles touchdown.
- 2:17:05So now the Vikings have the football.
- 2:17:07And when time resumes they will put it in play just inside the 10 yard stripe.
- 2:17:11Their own 10 yard stripe.
- 2:17:13As the skies darken some more.
- 2:17:1627, 21.
- 2:17:18The Eagles flying the nail down.
- 2:17:20Biggest win in many, many, many years.
- 2:17:23Crockington lives up the Vikings.
- 2:17:25Puts the receivers.
- 2:17:27Drops back.
- 2:17:28Almost slips.
- 2:17:29Fires into the middle.
- 2:17:30Compets the pass to Bob Tucker.
- 2:17:32And Tucker goes down at about the 15.
- 2:17:34Crockington did a good job as he backed up almost to the end zone.
- 2:17:38Had his feet nearly go out from under him at the 2.
- 2:17:41He regained his balance and threw the crossing pattern to Bob Tucker who picked up 7.
- 2:17:46He hasn't done much with his tight end.
- 2:17:47Threw that ball high and Tucker made a real fine catch.
- 2:17:50That ball could have been intercepted if Tucker did not get his hands on it.
- 2:17:53Frank Lamaster is the Eagle who made the tackle.
- 2:17:55So it is second down and a long 2 for the Vikings.
- 2:17:58Running back split.
- 2:17:59Wide receivers split.
- 2:18:01As Crockington turns and gives off to Ricky Young who comes off right tackle.
- 2:18:04Comes up close to the 20.
- 2:18:06I don't know if he reached it.
- 2:18:07While they compile.
- 2:18:08Will pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 2:18:11Can Garland play your song?
- 2:18:13WI.
- 2:18:16The Eagles are leading the Minnesota Vikings 27-21.
- 2:18:18Eagles trying to contain the Vikings right here.
- 2:18:20They want the football back.
- 2:18:22They wanted a wave.
- 2:18:23They wanted a
- 2:18:43wave from Frank Crockington.
- 2:18:47They know how dangerous he can be.
- 2:18:49Rashad lines up to the near side.
- 2:18:51Sammy White to the far side.
- 2:18:53Crockington dropping.
- 2:18:54Setting.
- 2:18:55Looking.
- 2:18:56Firing for the near side.
- 2:18:57Almost intercepted.
- 2:18:58Incomplete.
- 2:18:59Intended for Rashad.
- 2:19:00Almost intercepted by Herman Edwards.
- 2:19:03And he has got to be one of the most valuable players of the snowy day.
- 2:19:06I tell you a lot of things going on down there that time.
- 2:19:08Almost intercepted by Herman Edwards.
- 2:19:10And then almost caught by Rashad.
- 2:19:11And had Rashad caught it.
- 2:19:13He had nothing but clear sailing down that sideline.
- 2:19:16Well, Herman will talk about that gamble.
- 2:19:18He says you can't think do I gamble or don't I gamble.
- 2:19:21You react.
- 2:19:22You don't think on a play like that.
- 2:19:24We've seen him react to the Eagles advantage.
- 2:19:26We've seen him be beaten at a time or two.
- 2:19:29But right there he reacted well.
- 2:19:31It worked.
- 2:19:32On third down.
- 2:19:33The handoff goes.
- 2:19:34Off to Chuck Foreman.
- 2:19:35And he falls down.
- 2:19:36Just short yardage.
- 2:19:38Comes up to about the 24 yard line.
- 2:19:40Foreman on second down.
- 2:19:42Picked up about two yards.
- 2:19:43That's about all.
- 2:19:44Now it will be a Viking third down.
- 2:19:46Third about seven.
- 2:19:50Seven and a half perhaps.
- 2:19:52Foreman in the afternoon.
- 2:19:5316 carries 66 yards.
- 2:19:57Not a great day for him.
- 2:19:59It is a third down and eight for the Vikings.
- 2:20:01They have the football at their own 24 yard line.
- 2:20:04Markinson splits the receivers.
- 2:20:06He's dropping.
- 2:20:07Still dropping.
- 2:20:08Fires over the middle.
- 2:20:10From post to pass to Sammy White.
- 2:20:12He gets away from the man for 45.
- 2:20:14And finally Herman Edwards tackles him.
- 2:20:16But the Vikings take the first down.
- 2:20:18And they move the game.
- 2:20:20Markinson to Sammy White.
- 2:20:22Markinson had time right there.
- 2:20:24He had nobody in front of him obscuring his vision.
- 2:20:26And he had time to watch Sammy White run that crossing pattern.
- 2:20:30And drill it he did.
- 2:20:3121 yard game.
- 2:20:32And he had everybody out on the pattern.
- 2:20:34His both backs were running short out patterns.
- 2:20:36And they occupied the linebackers.
- 2:20:38Sammy White just took a deep breath and turned back in.
- 2:20:40And came up underneath the zone.
- 2:20:42Four minutes and ten seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
- 2:20:45Vikings with a first and ten.
- 2:20:47Motion left but Robert Nutter.
- 2:20:49Markinson hands off inside the Chuck Foreman.
- 2:20:51And he's grabbed by Bill Berge and slammed down at the 45.
- 2:20:55Maybe a yard at the very most.
- 2:20:57But Bill Berge read that precisely.
- 2:20:59And he grabbed Chuck Foreman and slammed him down at about the 46 yard line.
- 2:21:04A pickup of only two.
- 2:21:05Eagles leading the Vikings 27-21.
- 2:21:083-44 remaining to be played in the fourth quarter.
- 2:21:11Vikings break from the hollow.
- 2:21:13The football at the 46.
- 2:21:15Their own 46.
- 2:21:16The backers flip.
- 2:21:17The receivers are flip.
- 2:21:18Markinson back.
- 2:21:19Setting.
- 2:21:20Looking.
- 2:21:21Still looking.
- 2:21:22Screen pass.
- 2:21:23The Foreman.
- 2:21:24He cannot get away from Wilk.
- 2:21:25Now he does.
- 2:21:26And down he goes again at the 46 or 47.
- 2:21:28So Reggie Wilk came up.
- 2:21:30He contained him.
- 2:21:31He had him.
- 2:21:32He let him slip away.
- 2:21:33But finally he does get him again.
- 2:21:34A very short game.
- 2:21:35Good thing about the Eagles.
- 2:21:37And lots of discussion down there as though there might be a penalty.
- 2:21:39It's getting hard for us to see the flag.
- 2:21:43If there are any flags.
- 2:21:45It's a penalty against the Eagles.
- 2:21:47Looks like a personal foul against the Eagles.
- 2:21:49And this will hurt.
- 2:21:53Oh boy.
- 2:21:54They're going to step on 15 big ones right here.
- 2:21:56And this does hurt.
- 2:22:05I see the flag laying at about the 35 yard line.
- 2:22:08First foul.
- 2:22:09Close to the head.
- 2:22:10Number 66.
- 2:22:12Defense.
- 2:22:13First down.
- 2:22:14Well the personal foul is against Berge.
- 2:22:16And they step off the penalty yardage.
- 2:22:19And now the Vikings have the football.
- 2:22:21That's across the Eagle 40.
- 2:22:23Inside the 40.
- 2:22:24Down at the 36.
- 2:22:25Down at the 36.
- 2:22:26First and 10 for the Vikings.
- 2:22:28They've swapped their wide receivers.
- 2:22:30Rashad.
- 2:22:31Inside Rashad is Bami White.
- 2:22:33Rockington.
- 2:22:34Fires.
- 2:22:35Screen left.
- 2:22:36Almost intercepted by Edwards.
- 2:22:37Incomplete.
- 2:22:38Intended for Rashad.
- 2:22:39Edwards had the B that time.
- 2:22:40And if he had taken it he would have gone 70 yards for a touchdown.
- 2:22:44But the ball just moved his icy, icy hand.
- 2:22:48Incomplete.
- 2:22:50What a bloody that would have been.
- 2:22:52But nevertheless, Herman does the job and knocks the pass away.
- 2:22:56The Vikings.
- 2:22:57Not yet in field goal range of Dan Meyer.
- 2:23:00But they need more than a field goal.
- 2:23:02They trail the Eagles by a six.
- 2:23:03Eagles leading 27-21.
- 2:23:05The clock was 3.19.
- 2:23:07As Rockington lines them up.
- 2:23:09Fends Ricky Young in motion right.
- 2:23:11Rockington back.
- 2:23:12Humps one.
- 2:23:13Fires over to the near side.
- 2:23:14The foreman who falls down.
- 2:23:16And he's going to be contained at the 36.
- 2:23:18The line is scrimmaged.
- 2:23:19No damage there.
- 2:23:20Well that was a break for the Eagles.
- 2:23:22The Vikings ran a little free play that time.
- 2:23:24Put a couple blockers in front of Chuck Foreman.
- 2:23:26He caught the ball and had some running room.
- 2:23:28But lost his footing and fell down.
- 2:23:29And gave the Eagles time to recover.
- 2:23:31So again, Sir Francis with an important, important third down.
- 2:23:36It is third down and ten.
- 2:23:37They have the ball at the 36 yard line.
- 2:23:40Two minutes and 47 seconds.
- 2:23:4246 seconds as the clock continues to tick.
- 2:23:44Here in the fourth quarter.
- 2:23:46The crowd gets ready for action.
- 2:23:50The wide receivers are split.
- 2:23:52One running back.
- 2:23:53Rockington rolls right.
- 2:23:55Setting.
- 2:23:56Has time.
- 2:23:57Goes long.
- 2:23:58He counters.
- 2:23:59Out of incomplete.
- 2:24:00Incomplete.
- 2:24:01Intended for Sammy White.
- 2:24:02The pass broken up.
- 2:24:03John Sharer down there at the end zone.
- 2:24:06So Rockington that time tried to surprise the Eagles.
- 2:24:09As he went for six.
- 2:24:11He did not get it.
- 2:24:12Fourth down and ten and twice last week against the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:24:16Grant Tuckett has converted fourth down plays to keep the last second drive going.
- 2:24:19And the Vikings have no thought to doing anything else but to go for it right now.
- 2:24:28Rockington.
- 2:24:29Huddling the Vikings.
- 2:24:30On the afternoon.
- 2:24:3227 completions for 54 attempts.
- 2:24:3527 for 54.
- 2:24:37Drawing in almost every down.
- 2:24:39A fourth and ten.
- 2:24:40This is it for the Eagles defense.
- 2:24:42As Rockington rolls.
- 2:24:43Set.
- 2:24:44Goes left.
- 2:24:45Still looking.
- 2:24:46Close the pass.
- 2:24:47A load is Pucker.
- 2:24:48And Puckton goes out of bounds.
- 2:24:49Down to the ten.
- 2:24:50Pucker with a roll.
- 2:24:51Rockington has the time.
- 2:24:52The Eagles rush was not coming.
- 2:24:53And he found Bob Pucker down to the Eagles ten yard line.
- 2:24:54First down for the Vikings as they drive deeper and deeper into the Eagles territory.
- 2:24:55And now the clock continues to tick.
- 2:24:56All the way down we're going to have the two minute warning to start.
- 2:24:57And the first down for the Vikings.
- 2:24:58And the second down for the Eagles.
- 2:24:59And the third down for the Vikings.
- 2:25:00And the fourth down for the Vikings.
- 2:25:01And the fourth down for the Vikings.
- 2:25:02And the fifth down for the Vikings.
- 2:25:03And the sixth down for the Vikings.
- 2:25:04And the seventh down for the Eagles.
- 2:25:11The Eagles 27.
- 2:25:12The Vikings 21.
- 2:25:13And the fourth quarter.
- 2:25:14In all probability we have two minutes left in this football game.
- 2:25:17The Vikings have the ball on the ten yard line of the Eagles.
- 2:25:22The Eagles lead the Vikings.
- 2:25:2327 to 21.
- 2:25:24As Puckington came through with a pressure force down.
- 2:25:25And a pass for Bob Pucker.
- 2:25:26And a double.
- 2:25:27And a double.
- 2:25:28And a double.
- 2:25:29And a double.
- 2:25:30And a double.
- 2:25:31And a double.
- 2:25:32And a double.
- 2:25:33And a double.
- 2:25:34And a double.
- 2:25:35And a double.
- 2:25:36And a double.
- 2:25:37And a double.
- 2:25:38And a double.
- 2:25:39And a double.
- 2:25:40And five by saying a Q.
- 2:25:41Would do double the cancel.
- 2:25:42Their job because of the
- 2:25:49to the left and box them out of bounds but there is a flag thrown inside the
- 2:25:53tent and let's wait see what happens here it could be holding against the
- 2:25:57Vikings it is. It's been a long time since the Eagles got a break in this
- 2:26:01ballgame and almost the whole second half in fact is going the Vikings way
- 2:26:04but here's one that bounces the Eagles way of holding finally that's going to take
- 2:26:07the bike back to the 20 yard line. 155 to remain. Eagles 27 Vikings 21. 20 yards
- 2:26:15separating the Vikings. Holding number 73 offense still first down. Second holding penalty
- 2:26:23the afternoon on Ron Yerry. Vikings need a touchdown the tie a touchdown and an
- 2:26:29extra point to take the lead. They are 20 yards away. It is first down. Four shots
- 2:26:35to the Vikings right here. 155 remaining in the fourth quarter. One running back
- 2:26:40behind Parkinson as he drops he pumps he goes long looking into the end zone.
- 2:26:46Touchdown!
- 2:26:48A losing touchdown by Rashad!
- 2:26:52As the Vikings quiet as he goes up between Herman Edwards and John Sharrah.
- 2:26:57And lastly, history against the Packers. The peeps against the Eagles as Rashad goes
- 2:27:03into the air as the Vikings have tied it up.
- 2:27:08It was well covered the Eagles had him surrounded. Parkinson simply put the ball up
- 2:27:14and Rashad did the rest. It's 27-27 and now Rick Danmeyer is in the ballgame to try to add the lead.
- 2:27:22It's slippery. Paul Krause in trouble with the snap.
- 2:27:26How is Carmichael would try to bat it out of the air. He's done that before.
- 2:27:30The kick is off. It's good.
- 2:27:38And so the Vikings take the lead in 28-27. But there is still time left in this game.
- 2:27:46A minute and 49 seconds remaining and the Eagles will take the kick off and try to move
- 2:27:51downfield. Jim, we will have to wait and see what happens. A bad break when Ron Jaworski
- 2:27:56did not come back from the office on that last drive. They have John Dawson in there.
- 2:28:00He does not have the experience but he does have the arms.
- 2:28:04Absolutely and 1.49 to go. Eagles special teams now huddling around the 50 yard line,
- 2:28:0940 yard line, trying to get something going here. A good return, a couple first downs
- 2:28:13and who knows this game is far from over. That drive was 90 yards, 13 plays. Ron Jaworski
- 2:28:19has the warm up jacket off. I think he's going to come back in this ballgame.
- 2:28:23I try to drive the Eagles down in a two minute drill but they work on it so often in practice.
- 2:28:28Try to drive them down. Although I would hate to see this game end on a field goal.
- 2:28:34This field is so icy. Yamoda awaits the kick off to the far side.
- 2:28:39Amfield to the near side. Van Meijer. Now they have Montgomery in there I believe to
- 2:28:44try to take this thing down. Montgomery is in there.
- 2:28:48Yamoda and Montgomery. Here's the kick off. It's high. It's short. It's Montgomery at the 15.
- 2:28:54To the 20. To the 25. Montgomery to the 40. 45. He's down at the 38 yard line.
- 2:29:00So Roy Wilberts in his number and took it out to the 38 and they have some operating positions.
- 2:29:05Eagles are first and 10. The ball at the road, 38 yard line. And it is Jaworski of the game.
- 2:29:10Right. Just want to say that Jaworski is the quarterback. Good position here on the 38
- 2:29:14yard line and Wilberts in a game of so many inches here. A narrow break almost breaks that one all the way.
- 2:29:20A minute and 42 seconds remaining in this fourth quarter. Eagles railing the Vikings by a point.
- 2:29:27Out to the near side comes any pain and heroin Carmichael. Out to the far side goes Charlie Smith.
- 2:29:33They operate with three wide receivers. Back to the open set. Jaworski.
- 2:29:37Dropping. Stepping. Skipping ground. Big pace. Fires to Hogan. He's thrown for a loss at the 36.
- 2:29:44Jaworski went to Hogan and Hogan could not get free of Bill Wise who dropped him back at the 36.
- 2:29:50So now the Eagles get nowhere on that play of the clock. Down to one 22 and running.
- 2:29:56It is a second down and all he does is go back to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:30:00Again the three wide receivers employed. The backs are wide open.
- 2:30:04Jaworski being right. Rolling right. Still rolling. And the Vikings back of him by the 40 at the 28.
- 2:30:10But the lady makes the stop and down goes Jaworski at the 28 yard line.
- 2:30:16And now a minute and seven remaining and the Eagles are going to take a timeout.
- 2:30:21The Eagles are going to have a third down at 21 and they stop the clock at the 37.
- 2:30:28A minute and seven remaining in the ball game and Jaworski huddles the Eagles for the third down at 21.
- 2:30:36We've seen miracles this season. This one would not fit into the miracle category.
- 2:30:41But it's a long shot at fence. Jaworski breaks him from the huddle.
- 2:30:46Out to the near side comes Charlie Spence. Carmichael a pain out to the far side.
- 2:30:51The back to the wide open set. As Jaworski goes into the long count.
- 2:30:56He's dropping. He's setting. He's looking. Steps out of the pocket. Same shape.
- 2:31:02Puts the pass in complete. Tennis for Hogan. And Malaney was all over Jaworski to pressure him and throw him down.
- 2:31:09Jaworski's thrown down. He got the pass away in complete to Mike Hogan.
- 2:31:14He avoids the loss. Carl Eller and Mark Malaney in there on Jaworski forcing him to unload.
- 2:31:21He never had a chance Jim to set up and look for Smith or look for Carmichael or look for Payne.
- 2:31:27Now it's fourth down now and all the marbles here. 21 yards to go. The Eagles are going to go for it.
- 2:31:33Fourth down they have to. Just a minute remaining to be played in this football game.
- 2:31:40The Eagles need that long completion or they need a pass interference against the Vikings.
- 2:31:45Jaworski on his last chance. Lines them up. Dropping. Team Rush. Rolling left.
- 2:31:52Setting up. Firing down. It is complete. It is complete to Charlie Smith who has the first down.
- 2:31:58Just complete across midfield and the Eagles have a first down.
- 2:32:02And a timeout with 51 seconds remaining to be played in the game.
- 2:32:06And Jaworski turns the magic of the goal.
- 2:32:0951 seconds. The Eagles have one timeout remaining. The Vikings have all of theirs. They want to get that football at least down the 25 yard line to give Mike Hogan a winning shot.
- 2:32:21And even then it will be a long shot. The wide receivers are spread. He's got all three of them in there.
- 2:32:27They're running back to his split. The Vikings in the nickel defense as Jaworski retreats.
- 2:32:31Setting. Looking. Pumping once. Looking again. Incomplete.
- 2:32:35And a timeout for Montgomery on the far side. Up to the 41 yard line. Incomplete. The players take back a second down to 10.
- 2:32:43That timeout Kyle Reichel ran a deep corner pattern. Charlie Smith was running a deep post pattern.
- 2:32:49And Kenny Payne cut underneath him and Kenny was wide open. A little bit more time and Jaworski would have been able to spot that.
- 2:32:56One of the things that Dick Vermeer has said to us so often is that one of the outstanding attributes of Rod Jaworski is his ability to bring himself back. The leadership, the confidence, the belief that that right arm can penetrate anything.
- 2:33:09And he's flying right here. Second down to 10. The ball on the Viking 49. Jaworski retreats. He's rolling right. He's setting up. He's still rolling. He's looking. He's directing traffic.
- 2:33:20Fires down the sideline. Incomplete. Off of Viking. All those players said that he was looking for Charlie Smith. Down the white sideline at the 25 yard line.
- 2:33:29That player breaks up the pass. Jaworski just rears all the way. He started to go against the traffic. He had some thought about running the football. Eventually unloaded. Vikings almost picked it off but they didn't.
- 2:33:42And now it's third and 10 with 35 seconds from the clock in the board on the Viking 49. Vikings of course are all over here.
- 2:33:47I'll try to make a situation like this and Rod Jaworski doing the best he can to try and find some of the other guys who are being covered. Not so much.
- 2:33:55There's a slow down of 10. 35 seconds remaining to be played in this football game. The wide receivers.
- 2:34:03Tom Michael has to be a far side. Paying in splits with the nearest side. The running back's open. Jaworski back. As time. Looks right. Rolling right. Still looking. Being practiced. Still looking. Fires the football. Incomplete. Incomplete.
- 2:34:17It was intended for Mike Hogan who was his last royal hope on the white sideline. But he gets it off. He was tilted. I believe Carl Ellers was the man who tilted Jaworski.
- 2:34:28But he picked himself up and he walked slowly back to the hole. He takes a look at the scoreboard which reads 26 seconds remaining to be played in this football game.
- 2:34:38The Eagles 27. The Vikings 28. The football of the Vikings 49 yard line. Drama here in Bloomington, Minnesota.
- 2:34:48Fourth and 10. Parkinson made the first down plays. And Jaworski. Playing out to the nearest side. In that front. Charlie Smith. Tom Michael out to the far side.
- 2:34:59The last chance for the Eagles right here. The back through split. Jaworski calls the signals. He's back. He's rolling. He's hitting. He fires the football. Intercepted by the Vikings.
- 2:35:09Intercepted by Matt Moore who has fallen over at the 35 yard line. That player, Intercepts LePen, has a Viking to existence. 17 seconds.
- 2:35:19Hit right from Mike Hogan right here as Jaworski's last big effort of foul-get-one goes awry.
- 2:35:2917 seconds remaining to be played in this football game. And Jim, there's one thing we can be pretty certain of and you know what it is. You will be no exchanges. Parkinson will merely fall on the ball.
- 2:35:40Well, I would certainly think so. I'd say around as long as he is, it's been a cop to fall up in this situation. Very frustrating situation here.
- 2:35:47Overall for the Eagles, ironically, Kent Payne has found some open daylight there. And Jaworski just couldn't get enough on the football to get it over the head of Blair and into the arms of Kent Payne.
- 2:35:5717 seconds left and I have learned to stop giving the credits until the clock goes 0-0-0-0-0. But nevertheless, it is Parkinson just falling on the football.
- 2:36:0714 seconds and the Eagles will use their final timeout to stop the clock. But that's all they can do.
- 2:36:13The Eagles will take their final timeout right here and Parkinson is just going to huddle them back and drop on the football one more time.
- 2:36:22But we knew it. We knew it all game long. Even when the Eagles led the Vikings 27 to 14 and a half time, it wasn't one person in the Eagles organization watching the football game thinking this is all but rocked up.
- 2:36:34We've seen Mike Parkinson do it seemingly a hundred times. He comes back and when there are points to get, points needed, he somehow finds ways, invents ways, advises ways, but comes up with ways to get those points on the scoreboard.
- 2:36:48He's done it before and unfortunately for the Eagles, he has done it this afternoon.
- 2:36:5316 seconds remaining to be played in this football game and this should do it as Parkinson falls on the ball and the crowd gets to their seat and they count the seconds off the clock.
- 2:37:03Seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, it's over.
- 2:37:10The Minnesota Vikings have the speed of the Eagles, the final score the Vikings 28, the Eagles 27.
