- 0:33Speaker 1: Net joins us Now.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yo, dude, whate hey man, how's it going.
- 0:37Speaker 1: A good day? So? Alvin Kamara was there and told
- 0:41Speaker 1: reporters that I just it was like Forrest Gump. I
- 0:45Speaker 1: just felt like running. I just felt like going to
- 0:47Speaker 1: practice today. Uh Man, you buying.
- 0:49Speaker 2: That, I am buying it, don't. I don't think that
- 0:54Speaker 2: it was without an ulterior motive, but I am buying
- 0:57Speaker 2: that he did want to be at practice. I think
- 1:00Speaker 2: more and more so it was him trying to show
- 1:03Speaker 2: through action what it is that he's been saying all
- 1:05Speaker 2: a law, which is that he gave himself as a
- 1:07Speaker 2: part of the team, even poor wants to be here,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and now he's effectively maybe you know, we'll find out
- 1:13Speaker 2: if it's effective or not. But applying pressure to the
- 1:16Speaker 2: organization a little bit by saying like, hey, look, I'm
- 1:18Speaker 2: doing everything that you need me to do to know
- 1:20Speaker 2: that I'm going to be a part of this. Now
- 1:22Speaker 2: the ball is in your court. And that's kind of
- 1:23Speaker 2: where he's been all along through what he's been saying,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and now he's just putting forth the action a backup
- 1:28Speaker 2: the words.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Ross What would have to happen for the Saints to
- 1:33Speaker 1: cut Alvin Kamara.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I think it would have to be a situation in
- 1:37Speaker 2: which they decided that he is going to play a
- 1:40Speaker 2: role that's not commensurate with what his cap kit is,
- 1:43Speaker 2: which is sitting around like ten point four million dollars.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So that would have to be step one. Step two
- 1:47Speaker 2: would have to be that they would go to him
- 1:49Speaker 2: about a potential pay cut. I'm not certain that they've
- 1:52Speaker 2: done that yet, and then step three would have to
- 1:54Speaker 2: be that he denies taking that pay cut. Outside of that,
- 1:58Speaker 2: there's not really a reason for the things to look
- 2:01Speaker 2: at moving on from him. Or even really adjusting his contract.
- 2:05Speaker 2: They're not starving for salary cap money, which is, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: not something we get to say very often, but it's
- 2:10Speaker 2: kind of a new truth for New Orleans. And so
- 2:13Speaker 2: really this would have to come down to them just deciding, hey,
- 2:17Speaker 2: the role is going to be different, and right now
- 2:19Speaker 2: the contract doesn't make sense what the role is going
- 2:21Speaker 2: to be. And so then they ask him for a
- 2:23Speaker 2: paid time, then he'd have to turn that down. That
- 2:25Speaker 2: would be the only situation in which I can imagine
- 2:28Speaker 2: that it would would resolve in or Land on him
- 2:32Speaker 2: being cut. But I don't real that it's absolutely necessary
- 2:35Speaker 2: for them to do so either, because it's not like
- 2:37Speaker 2: they're starving for the cash and it's not like they
- 2:39Speaker 2: save any money by making the movie.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Okay, we'll pause the ak stuff because I don't think
- 2:46Speaker 1: we're getting resolution on that soon. They're on the field
- 2:50Speaker 1: for OTAs. You'll have had some limited access to go watch.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Sounds like you've kind of zeroed in on this Jonas
- 2:58Speaker 1: Sanker star position storyline. Give us the nuts and bolts
- 3:03Speaker 1: of what's going on there.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a really crucial role for Brandon Staley's defense,
- 3:09Speaker 2: just the way that they play. You know, they usually
- 3:11Speaker 2: have a guy that's assigned to being what we would
- 3:14Speaker 2: call a field corner. You're typically speaking in the NFL,
- 3:19Speaker 2: the ball is stacked from a hash mark, and so
- 3:21Speaker 2: the hash mark that's closest to the out of bounds
- 3:24Speaker 2: boundary that's called kind of the boundary side. The hash
- 3:29Speaker 2: mark that's furthest from to the opposite side is called
- 3:32Speaker 2: the field side. And so usually you like guys that
- 3:36Speaker 2: can well in space and all that kind of be
- 3:38Speaker 2: on the field side. So they kind of split up
- 3:40Speaker 2: the corners in safeties to play those roles right field
- 3:43Speaker 2: of boundary, whereas that star corner role is trusted with
- 3:47Speaker 2: following players in motion and moving potentially from one side
- 3:51Speaker 2: of the field to the other, having to adjust in
- 3:53Speaker 2: that way, playing safety, playing linebacker, playing down on the
- 3:57Speaker 2: line of scrimmage in certain play calls, and packaging as well.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So it's just this really versatile role that we watched
- 4:03Speaker 2: a Lante Taylor play last year and we know is
- 4:06Speaker 2: a big part of what it is that Brandon Staley's
- 4:08Speaker 2: defense does. We've seen him implement it with guys like
- 4:11Speaker 2: Derwin James and Jalen Ramsey in the past. And so
- 4:14Speaker 2: this is a critical kind of foundational position for the
- 4:18Speaker 2: SAME's defense, and so figuring out who was going to
- 4:21Speaker 2: take over that role when they didn't sign anybody specifically
- 4:24Speaker 2: to do so in free agency, when they couldn't draft
- 4:27Speaker 2: anybody in a draft that could come in to specifically
- 4:29Speaker 2: play that role, it was always going to be very
- 4:32Speaker 2: interesting to see who he was. I thought that Yonah
- 4:34Speaker 2: Sanker was the guy that made the most sense. He
- 4:36Speaker 2: played a similar role during his collegiate days over at Virginia.
- 4:39Speaker 2: He can rush the passer, he can tackle, and he
- 4:41Speaker 2: should proved last year that he can cover. I think
- 4:44Speaker 2: with all of that, it's just part of what makes
- 4:46Speaker 2: that role so interesting to follow, and their decision to
- 4:51Speaker 2: go with Yonah Sanker being one that is really really
- 4:55Speaker 2: kind of intriguing because he can do a lot of
- 4:57Speaker 2: things that maybe Alante Taylor couldn't do, and so it'll
- 5:00Speaker 2: be interesting to see kind of how they grow that
- 5:02Speaker 2: role with Fiona Sanker there, if he ends up holding
- 5:05Speaker 2: onto it.
- 5:05Speaker 1: He's at the top of the rotation right now at
- 5:07Speaker 1: Ross Jackson, nola A Louisiana sports dot Net. Locked on Saints,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you can always get his stuff free. By the way,
- 5:15Speaker 1: a newly designed Louisiana Sports dot Net drop today, so
- 5:20Speaker 1: if you haven't checked it out, please do. Ross's OTA
- 5:23Speaker 1: Day four practice report is up there. In addition to
- 5:29Speaker 1: Alvin Kamara being in attendance, anything else notable in your attendance.
- 5:33Speaker 2: List, I think the only other things was that we
- 5:36Speaker 2: were really watching for was to see if any of
- 5:38Speaker 2: the involvement for a couple of the rookies was going
- 5:41Speaker 2: to kick up. You know, Jordan Tyson is still kind
- 5:45Speaker 2: of being, as Kevin Moore likes to say, and really
- 5:47Speaker 2: it's it's kind of a thing around the NFL, that is,
- 5:50Speaker 2: they're ramping him up and getting him ready mostly with
- 5:52Speaker 2: the focus on trying to make sure that he's good
- 5:54Speaker 2: to go in totality for training camp. Same thing for
- 5:57Speaker 2: Christian Miller. No movement there those guys from that it
- 6:00Speaker 2: didn't participate. One notable absence or not absence, But one
- 6:04Speaker 2: noticeable change in participation today though, was tight end Oscar Dell.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He kind of looked to maybe tweak something during last
- 6:11Speaker 2: week's OTA practice. Now this week he was kind of
- 6:15Speaker 2: standing off to the side and watching from his position group,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and so that'll be something to watch out for. This
- 6:21Speaker 2: team really needs to be able to get its rookie
- 6:23Speaker 2: class that looks like it's ready to have an impact
- 6:26Speaker 2: healthy to the beginning of the season, and so there's
- 6:28Speaker 2: some kind of concerns here, or maybe not concerns, but
- 6:32Speaker 2: certainly some eye raising, eyebrow raising moments that are taking
- 6:36Speaker 2: place when it comes to help that roocky class right now.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So that's something we'll continue to track as we're back
- 6:40Speaker 2: next week. Outside of that, no big surprise in terms
- 6:43Speaker 2: of attendance. No Chase Young, no Chris Olave. But remember
- 6:46Speaker 2: these OTAs are voluntary. They were here for the first week,
- 6:49Speaker 2: and it's not unusual to see players either arrive a
- 6:53Speaker 2: week later just for the last week, or only show
- 6:56Speaker 2: up for the first week and then maybe go away
- 6:58Speaker 2: until a mandatory mini camp.
- 7:00Speaker 1: About Jalen Polk, what are we.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Saying, Yeah, Jalen Polk look really good today. I had
- 7:05Speaker 2: a great catch as he crossed over from the left
- 7:08Speaker 2: side of the field to the right side of the field.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Great arm, angle throw by Tyler Shuck kind of doing
- 7:13Speaker 2: the thing that we saw him do all season last
- 7:15Speaker 2: year as a starter, during the games of which he
- 7:17Speaker 2: was a starter, and he was able to come up
- 7:19Speaker 2: with a really really nice catch over that point. And
- 7:22Speaker 2: this is just the guy that you know. I talked
- 7:23Speaker 2: to him after practice and I asked him about what
- 7:26Speaker 2: it felt like being traded for by a team when
- 7:31Speaker 2: you're on injured reserve and no, you can't play that season,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and he talked about sort of the gratitude that he felt.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The ability to trade for a player on injured reserve
- 7:40Speaker 2: is something that's only been in the NFL for about
- 7:42Speaker 2: a handful of years. Think it was like a little
- 7:44Speaker 2: bit over handles like twenty eighteen or so when that
- 7:46Speaker 2: was actually implemented and the things doing that really showed
- 7:50Speaker 2: a lot to Jalen Polk, and so he feels really
- 7:53Speaker 2: kind of indebted in the idea of like, Okay, I'm
- 7:55Speaker 2: gonna come here and gonna work my tailoff, and that's
- 7:56Speaker 2: showing so far on the field. He worked a ton
- 7:59Speaker 2: with Tyler Shuck over the the off season, were already
- 8:01Speaker 2: starting to see that chemistry come together off the field.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Anything else, I would say, the only other big couple
- 8:07Speaker 2: of big things that I would highlight are the guys
- 8:10Speaker 2: that are kind of behind Jonas Stanker in that star
- 8:13Speaker 2: spot role are really intriguing. Jayden Price was one of them.
- 8:17Speaker 2: A Beanie Bishop was another. These are two qrnerbacks that
- 8:19Speaker 2: joined the team last year. Jayden Price is a UFL
- 8:22Speaker 2: guy that signed with the Saints last offseason after the
- 8:25Speaker 2: spring season was done and was kind of more like
- 8:28Speaker 2: a primary punt returner kick returner during his time with
- 8:31Speaker 2: the UFL, but also led the league in passes defense.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So somebody just to keep an eye out on as
- 8:35Speaker 2: a potential early look at maybe a guy that's under
- 8:39Speaker 2: the radar that could actually make the roster because he
- 8:41Speaker 2: might be able to back up that role. I think
- 8:43Speaker 2: that's pretty big. Beanie Bishop is a guy that played
- 8:45Speaker 2: really well, had four interceptions during his rookie season playing
- 8:48Speaker 2: in the slot in Pittsburgh, but is going to be
- 8:50Speaker 2: suspended to start the season. So that's going to be
- 8:52Speaker 2: able to give the Saints a little bit of an
- 8:54Speaker 2: interesting potential play at roster numbers and things like that.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And then the backup stinner role because I know, you know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: Sinks fans are stickos like me, and we care about
- 9:03Speaker 2: who were who's you know, taking snaps behind the starting enterity.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It mattered a lot last year, didn't it?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Big time? Big time, and having a guy like Luke
- 9:11Speaker 2: Portner being able to step in showed the value. Especial
- 9:14Speaker 2: if you go back to twenty twenty four where Eric
- 9:16Speaker 2: McCoy was injured in the Saint Drops seven games in
- 9:18Speaker 2: a row, a little bit more correlation than causation, but
- 9:21Speaker 2: still kind of tied. Torris Elli Simpkins has been the
- 9:24Speaker 2: guy that has been backing up that role consistently. He
- 9:26Speaker 2: played really well there during the preseason last year, but
- 9:29Speaker 2: really only played guard during the regular season because they
- 9:32Speaker 2: had Luke Portner who they traded for before the season began,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and so Torris Elli Simptons continues to be the guy
- 9:37Speaker 2: that's kind of right behind Eric McCoy in that rotation,
- 9:40Speaker 2: and so a promising player continued to get some early repsdent.
