- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch, to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:36Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:39Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're talking about our new story, Backmasking and the death
- 0:49Speaker 1: of the Dangerous rock Star. Because of our new episode
- 0:52Speaker 1: on Judas Priest, we're rewinding back to our spooky Robert
- 0:56Speaker 1: Johnson tail previewing next week's episode on The Exorcist. We
- 1:00Speaker 1: get into your voicemails, text, dms, and as always, a
- 1:03Speaker 1: whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast for the
- 1:05Speaker 1: musically obsessed, with the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:08Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Disgrace Lands, where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:13Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else all right, discoes,
- 1:16Speaker 1: let's get into it. In nineteen ninety, the National News
- 1:40Speaker 1: reported on a Judas priest court case and the heavy
- 1:43Speaker 1: metal band was accused of inciting fans to commit suicide. Specifically,
- 1:48Speaker 1: authorities accuse the English group of including hidden messages in
- 1:51Speaker 1: their songs that could only be heard by playing vinyl
- 1:54Speaker 1: copies of their albums backward. This practice, known as backmasking,
- 2:00Speaker 1: wasn't a new concept in nineteen ninety, but what was
- 2:04Speaker 1: new in nineteen ninety was the idea that many in
- 2:07Speaker 1: mainstream America seriously believed that rock stars were dangerous enough
- 2:13Speaker 1: to want to cause intentional harm, even death, to their fans.
- 2:18Speaker 1: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne each endured back masking controversies.
- 2:25Speaker 1: In the nineteen sixties, the Beatles were accused of including
- 2:27Speaker 1: the backward message turned Me on dead Man in their
- 2:30Speaker 1: song Revolution Number nine, a supposed reference to their supposed
- 2:35Speaker 1: dead bass player Paul McCartney. In the seventies, Led Zeppelin
- 2:40Speaker 1: were accused of backmasking the message Here's to My Sweet Satan,
- 2:45Speaker 1: a lyric that one could supposedly decipher by playing the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Zeppelin tune Stairway to Heaven. Backward. In the eighties, in
- 2:53Speaker 1: an event that would foreshadow the Judas Priest scandal, Ozzy
- 2:56Speaker 1: Osbourne was sued for criminal negligence, accused by the parents
- 3:00Speaker 1: of a young fan of including subliminal messages in his
- 3:03Speaker 1: song Suicide Solution and inciting their son to kill himself.
- 3:08Speaker 1: The idea that rock stars would go out of their
- 3:11Speaker 1: way to design backward messaging in their recordings with the
- 3:14Speaker 1: intent of causing harm to their fans is absurd, But
- 3:20Speaker 1: the point is that in decades past, people believed this
- 3:25Speaker 1: to be true, so much so that Ozzy Osbourne and
- 3:29Speaker 1: Judas Priest were forced into court to defend lawsuits brought
- 3:32Speaker 1: against them. Now, who would believe that rock stars were
- 3:36Speaker 1: this dangerous? Well, lots of people, and it turns out
- 3:41Speaker 1: they had good reason. In nineteen sixty six, when the Beatles,
- 3:45Speaker 1: John Lennon said publicly that the Beatles were more popular
- 3:48Speaker 1: than Jesus Christ, ninety one percent of Americans identified as Christians,
- 3:54Speaker 1: compared to today when just sixty one percent of Americans
- 3:57Speaker 1: identify as Christians. Truly, a massive backlash against the Beatles
- 4:03Speaker 1: took place after these comments. Lenin was accused of blasphemy. Beatles'
- 4:07Speaker 1: records were burned, their music was banned on certain radio
- 4:10Speaker 1: stations throughout the American South, and Lenin was forced to
- 4:13Speaker 1: publicly apologize. In nineteen eighty five, when the led Zeppelin
- 4:17Speaker 1: biography Hammer of the Gods was published, news of the
- 4:20Speaker 1: group's unspeakable sexual depravity involving a mud shark spread throughout
- 4:25Speaker 1: every high school in America, and despite the questionable veracity
- 4:29Speaker 1: of the book's author and its sources, many believed this
- 4:32Speaker 1: story and still do. And in nineteen eighty one, when
- 4:36Speaker 1: Ozzy Osbourne shocked CBS Records executives by biting the head
- 4:41Speaker 1: off of a live dove in the middle of a
- 4:43Speaker 1: business meeting, and then repeated the animal abuse on stage
- 4:47Speaker 1: a year later by biting the head off of a bat,
- 4:50Speaker 1: parents of teenage metal heads across the United States were horrified.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Who were these lunatics entertaining American children? Blasphemy, unspeakable acts
- 5:01Speaker 1: of depravity, animal abuse. We can question the seriousness of
- 5:06Speaker 1: the intent behind all of these controversies, but you can't
- 5:11Speaker 1: deny the shocking impact that each event had. These stories
- 5:17Speaker 1: and more. Vince Neil from Motley Cruz drunk driving incident
- 5:20Speaker 1: that killed Nicholas Razzle Dingley, drummer for Hanoi Rocks Axel
- 5:24Speaker 1: Rose from Guns N' Roses, inciting a riot at one
- 5:27Speaker 1: of the band's shows, Billie Idol compelling hotel management to
- 5:30Speaker 1: call the Thai military to evict him from a Bangkok
- 5:33Speaker 1: hotel over his debaucherous and violent behavior. These tales of
- 5:38Speaker 1: rock and roll excess made national and sometimes international news. Authorities,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and parents had serious questions about the entertainers their children
- 5:48Speaker 1: were being exposed to dangerous rock stars. This fear and
- 5:53Speaker 1: doubt burst into mainstream consciousness in nineteen eighty five when
- 5:58Speaker 1: the PMRC, the Parents Music Resource Center, a music censorship
- 6:02Speaker 1: advocacy group spearheaded by Tipper Gore, wife of then Democrat
- 6:06Speaker 1: Senator Al Gore, argued in front of the entire country
- 6:09Speaker 1: in a live televised Senate hearing the popular musicians posed
- 6:13Speaker 1: a dangerous threat to young people, and specifically accused Led
- 6:18Speaker 1: Zeppelin and other groups of back masking. Senate testimony didn't
- 6:24Speaker 1: prove that rock stars were intentionally trying to harm young
- 6:28Speaker 1: fans through back masking. In fact, Frank Zappa, in his
- 6:32Speaker 1: testimony against the PMRC's accusations, thoroughly destroyed their argument, saying
- 6:38Speaker 1: the whole issue of hidden messages, backward masking, and all
- 6:41Speaker 1: that if you play any record backwards long enough, you'll
- 6:44Speaker 1: eventually hear what you want to hear. It's the same
- 6:46Speaker 1: as looking at clouds. People see what they want. It
- 6:49Speaker 1: is not scientific and it's not serious, And despite the
- 6:53Speaker 1: testimony of Frank Zappa, the PMRC did prevail. The RIAA,
- 6:58Speaker 1: the Recording Industry Associateation of America agreed to include a
- 7:02Speaker 1: warning sticker on albums deemed offensive sacrilegious snark sex with
- 7:08Speaker 1: mud sharks, headless bats, deadly, drunk driving incidents, riots, debauchery
- 7:13Speaker 1: in a nationally televised senate hearing. All contributed to an
- 7:17Speaker 1: environment of fear in moral panic, and came to a
- 7:21Speaker 1: head in nineteen ninety when the parents of a Judas
- 7:24Speaker 1: Priest fan, James Vance accused the band of backmasking messages
- 7:29Speaker 1: intended to compel listeners to kill themselves. Vance was horribly
- 7:34Speaker 1: disfigured in a suicide pack with his friend and fellow
- 7:37Speaker 1: Judas Priest fan Raymond Bellknapp, who shot and killed himself
- 7:40Speaker 1: on December twenty third, nineteen eighty five. As ridiculous as
- 7:45Speaker 1: this lawsuit sounds the idea that musicians would exert time, money,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and creative energy in the recording studio to design secret
- 7:53Speaker 1: messaging with the express purpose of causing harm, even death
- 7:58Speaker 1: to their fans. As obsid sird as this idea is.
- 8:02Speaker 1: This is not the point. The point is that in
- 8:06Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties, people actually believed that rock stars were
- 8:10Speaker 1: dangerous enough to do what they were being accused of.
- 8:14Speaker 1: The Judas Priest backmasking case was very real. Ozzy Osbourne
- 8:19Speaker 1: faced his own lawsuit over the same issue in nineteen
- 8:21Speaker 1: eighty seven, and led Zeppelin's name was smeared all over
- 8:24Speaker 1: the floor of the United States Senate. Rob Halford, a
- 8:28Speaker 1: singer and a heavy metal band, was, along with his bandmates,
- 8:33Speaker 1: forced into court to testify to his innocence in a
- 8:35Speaker 1: lawsuit accusing him of wanting to kill his fans. This
- 8:40Speaker 1: would never happen today. Rock stars simply aren't seen as
- 8:45Speaker 1: being dangerous enough. Sure, some mainstream rockers play with dark imagery,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but not in any serious kind of way, not in
- 8:54Speaker 1: a way that results in lawsuits or accusations of compelling
- 8:58Speaker 1: the deaths of fans. The rock star, or the myth
- 9:02Speaker 1: of the dangerous rock star hasn't been eliminated, but it
- 9:07Speaker 1: has been domesticated. Today's rockstar is, by comparison, or at
- 9:11Speaker 1: least the perception of today's rock stars is safe, and
- 9:17Speaker 1: I would argue, for better or worse anyway, that that's boring.
- 9:21Speaker 1: These days, public fear and paranoia is expressed toward hip
- 9:25Speaker 1: hop artists like Travis Scott and Lil nas X, and
- 9:29Speaker 1: if we're to believe certain corners of the Internet, it's
- 9:31Speaker 1: through these artists that the devil now expresses himself. But
- 9:36Speaker 1: as for the myth of the dangerous rock star, it's dead.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But I am very much alive, and I'll be back
- 9:43Speaker 1: in the flash with your voicemails, text emails and answers
- 9:46Speaker 1: on who you think the greatest heavy metal acts of
- 9:48Speaker 1: all time are more after this, all right, we are
- 10:16Speaker 1: back and we are dangerous. As ever, that entire piece
- 10:19Speaker 1: on back masking that you just heard was obviously inspired
- 10:23Speaker 1: by our recent episode on Judas Priest. The whole subject
- 10:27Speaker 1: totally fascinates me, the fact that people actually believed what
- 10:30Speaker 1: they believed, the urban myths that back masking created. If
- 10:34Speaker 1: you're of a certain age, you heard all those stories
- 10:37Speaker 1: growing up like I did, and I wanted to give
- 10:39Speaker 1: the subject a little more time, thus the piece at
- 10:42Speaker 1: the top of this episode. Another subject relative to Judas
- 10:46Speaker 1: Priest that we didn't cover in our full story. In
- 10:50Speaker 1: our full episode, I should say, was the arrest and
- 10:53Speaker 1: imprisonment of Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland for abusing a
- 10:57Speaker 1: minor with learning disabilities. Shocked to discover a part of
- 11:03Speaker 1: this story that I was previously oblivious to, regarding the
- 11:08Speaker 1: band's thoughts on their drummer's arrest and what happened after
- 11:13Speaker 1: that certainly not part of the public narratives surrounding Dave
- 11:17Speaker 1: Holland and Judas Priest. You can sort of connect the
- 11:21Speaker 1: dots here and come to a very very interesting conclusion.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Disgrace and All Access members can hear that conclusion and
- 11:28Speaker 1: that story in our mini episode this week. Available for
- 11:31Speaker 1: Patreon and Apple subscribers five bucks a month to get
- 11:33Speaker 1: that content, along with ad free listening and more. Just
- 11:36Speaker 1: go to Disgrace sampod dot com to sign up before
- 11:39Speaker 1: those prices go up at the end of October, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: know that when you do sign up, you're supporting the
- 11:44Speaker 1: show and we really appreciate that. Speaking of myths, where
- 11:48Speaker 1: we speaking a myths. I don't know. I feel like
- 11:50Speaker 1: we're always doing some sort of myth work here. In
- 11:53Speaker 1: this week's rewind episode on Robert Johnson, we play with
- 11:56Speaker 1: the myth that Robert Johnson sold the soul to the
- 11:59Speaker 1: Devil for success, which to me is kind of wrote,
- 12:02Speaker 1: kind of boring. I've got a different take on Robert
- 12:04Speaker 1: Johnson and the Devil, and you're not going to want
- 12:07Speaker 1: to miss it. This episode has some of our best
- 12:10Speaker 1: and creepiest sound design, perfect for Halloween, so make sure
- 12:14Speaker 1: you don't miss it. It's coming up directly after this
- 12:17Speaker 1: bonus episode next week. All the chills hit when we
- 12:21Speaker 1: dive into our Exorcist story again on the Halloween tip,
- 12:26Speaker 1: do yourself a favor and download that episode, Climb into bed,
- 12:30Speaker 1: turn off the lights, put some headphones on, and be
- 12:33Speaker 1: prepared to creep out with us. One of my favorite episodes.
- 12:37Speaker 1: When we originally released this story last year, we received
- 12:41Speaker 1: a ton of positive feedback from you guys, including some
- 12:45Speaker 1: who were connected to the story, which is really fascinating.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We knew we had an instant Halloween classic, so I'm
- 12:51Speaker 1: excited to listen again, and I hope you are too.
- 12:53Speaker 1: All right. The Exorcist story is indeed creepy and deals
- 12:57Speaker 1: with some heavy issues, but it also a really fun question.
- 13:02Speaker 1: What is the scariest movie by your estimation? This scariest
- 13:06Speaker 1: movie of all time? I don't know how you want
- 13:07Speaker 1: to term it. Whatever scares the hell out of you.
- 13:09Speaker 1: We talked about this last year and got a boatload
- 13:13Speaker 1: of responses. We're still getting responses on it, if I'm
- 13:15Speaker 1: being totally honest, So I know it's a subject that
- 13:18Speaker 1: still has legs. And I know that some of you
- 13:20Speaker 1: guys are constantly watching new horror and watching old horror
- 13:24Speaker 1: and updating your your list of favorite scary movies. So
- 13:27Speaker 1: when you're listening to the Exorcist episode next week, be
- 13:30Speaker 1: thinking about which movies has scared you the most, which
- 13:34Speaker 1: have really freaked you the hell out, whether they're old classics,
- 13:38Speaker 1: new ones, things you've seen since since last year and
- 13:41Speaker 1: we talked about this last whatever it is, hit me up,
- 13:44Speaker 1: let me know six one seven nine oh six six
- 13:46Speaker 1: six three eight. Leave a voicemail and the text, I
- 13:48Speaker 1: love getting hip to horror movies that I haven't seen,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and reminded of classics that I need to rewatch this year.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh sixty six six three eight
- 13:57Speaker 1: call let me know which scary movie freaky out the
- 14:01Speaker 1: most and what we all need to be watching this Halloween,
- 14:05Speaker 1: all right. And on the subject of you guys and
- 14:09Speaker 1: your voicemails, excuse that chair in the background sliding across
- 14:11Speaker 1: the floor. I moved the studio around a little bit yesterday,
- 14:14Speaker 1: trying to go for a little fresh look here, more
- 14:17Speaker 1: of a flat background, you know. And I'm still settling
- 14:21Speaker 1: in here, all right, So excuse that rolling chair there
- 14:24Speaker 1: it is again. Anyways, on the subject of you guys
- 14:26Speaker 1: in your voicemails and text, let's hear your answers to
- 14:29Speaker 1: last week's question of the week on the heavy metal
- 14:32Speaker 1: artists that are on your mount rushmore of heavy metal.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Let's hear from Ben in the eight to three.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Ay, Jake, this is Ben from the eight to oh three,
- 14:39Speaker 2: weighing in on a subject that back in my wheelhouse
- 14:43Speaker 2: as a young impressionable guy in the eighties, during the
- 14:48Speaker 2: heyday of the heavy metal era, if you will, learning
- 14:52Speaker 2: to play guitar and naturally gravitated towards Van Alen by
- 14:56Speaker 2: mounting those guys. But when you're talking about bands, there
- 15:00Speaker 2: was just something big and majestic and well downright British.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Obviously about the two best middle bands of all time.
- 15:09Speaker 2: In my opinion, they would be one in one egg
- 15:11Speaker 2: and that would be Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Those
- 15:15Speaker 2: guys just hit different. And you know, again, when you're
- 15:18Speaker 2: going from listening to you know, Van Halen and all
- 15:20Speaker 2: this stuff for the Ryven guitars and you hear the
- 15:24Speaker 2: you hear you know, Glenn Tips and KK Down and
- 15:26Speaker 2: those guys and the way they were doing or doing
- 15:29Speaker 2: guitar melodies and everything else.
- 15:30Speaker 1: It was just.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Everything was a little bit bigger and badder, you know
- 15:34Speaker 2: what I mean. And then ultimate concert ever was probably
- 15:38Speaker 2: the Iron Maiden Power Slave Tour. I still have nightmares
- 15:41Speaker 2: about Ady coming at me. Thanks a lot, Jake, keep
- 15:44Speaker 2: up the great word rock and.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Roller, Ben. I feel the van Halen love and I
- 15:49Speaker 1: agree with you. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest just hit different.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Just didn't make it into the Judas Priest episode, but
- 15:55Speaker 1: it was one of the things that I found. I
- 15:57Speaker 1: didn't I didn't get to write about it. I didn't
- 15:59Speaker 1: know this that I wasn't surprised to read that Iron
- 16:04Speaker 1: Maiden opened up for Judas priest early on in their career.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And but what I what I what I did find
- 16:11Speaker 1: that was surprising was that in KK Downing's book he
- 16:15Speaker 1: talks about how h they he basically he doesn't say
- 16:19Speaker 1: he hates Iron Maiden, but he just talks, I didn't
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to say, talk shit. But he's got a very
- 16:23Speaker 1: unfavorable opinion of these guys based on not on their music,
- 16:28Speaker 1: on their attitudes and the way they acted when they
- 16:31Speaker 1: were toring together as a young band. And I think
- 16:33Speaker 1: he compares them to def Leopard and just how what
- 16:35Speaker 1: great guys def Leopard were and how easy it was,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and has similar kind things to say about ac DC
- 16:41Speaker 1: from that time period. But Iron Maiden, he's not a fan.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And this is something that's come up recently a couple
- 16:48Speaker 1: times to me. When when Zeth and I were talking
- 16:50Speaker 1: a few months ago about Sharon Osbourne, we came upon this,
- 16:55Speaker 1: uh tidbit of information where Iron Maiden did an oz
- 16:59Speaker 1: Fest a few years back and had a lot of
- 17:01Speaker 1: beef with Sharon and basically a lot of people on
- 17:04Speaker 1: that tour do not like Iron Maid. And so I
- 17:08Speaker 1: don't know what this is all about. I mean, I'm
- 17:10Speaker 1: not admittedly I'm not an Iron Maiden aficionado. I like
- 17:15Speaker 1: Iron Maiden. I was listening to the Somewhere in Time
- 17:17Speaker 1: album the other day a couple of days ago, cop
- 17:19Speaker 1: down on CD at Armageddon Records in Harvard Square when
- 17:23Speaker 1: I was up in Boston a couple weeks ago, or Cambridge,
- 17:25Speaker 1: i should say, and was listening to that album. Loved
- 17:28Speaker 1: that album. Stranger to Strange lands such as fucking Bruce
- 17:34Speaker 1: Dickinson's voice, man so good, epic, epic, epic, epic choruses,
- 17:41Speaker 1: and also kind of sounds like these guys might have
- 17:44Speaker 1: been Epic Dix as well. Anyways, that came up in
- 17:47Speaker 1: the Judis Priests research. All right, let's go. Let's we
- 17:50Speaker 1: get another call here from the eight oh three eight
- 17:53Speaker 1: O three. This is from Eric the last eight oh
- 17:57Speaker 1: three voicemails from Ben. One of you guys know each other.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I'm just curious Eric in the ATO three, Let's hear
- 18:03Speaker 1: what you get to say.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, is Eric from the AH three calling to
- 18:08Speaker 3: tell you that my favorite heavy metal band of all
- 18:11Speaker 3: time is Judas Priest.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I'm an eighties medal kid.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Love lots of bands from that era and beyond, but
- 18:18Speaker 3: the Priests are my favorite, Screaming for Vengeance is probably
- 18:22Speaker 3: my favorite album of all time, and Rob is definitely
- 18:26Speaker 3: my favorite metal singer. So rock on, love your show,
- 18:31Speaker 3: talk to you later, Eric.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I agree Juwics Priest stands amongst the greats. You mentioned
- 18:38Speaker 1: Screaming for Vengeance, and I have to mention here a
- 18:41Speaker 1: mistake that I made in the Jewish Priest episode that
- 18:44Speaker 1: Marty E emailed me about. I confused the Screaming for
- 18:48Speaker 1: Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith albums in our story
- 18:52Speaker 1: when I was giving a breakdown of record sales by
- 18:55Speaker 1: Judas Priest. If you downloaded an early version of that episode,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you might have heard that mistake. We've since corrected it
- 19:01Speaker 1: and re uploaded the correction the correct episode. That's correct
- 19:06Speaker 1: information in the episode. Excuse me, So if you're downloading
- 19:09Speaker 1: a later version, you're just gonna get the correct stuff
- 19:11Speaker 1: and it doesn't matter. My bad and total brain fart.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Well aware of the differences between the albums. My bad,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and thank you Marty E for pointing that out. I
- 19:19Speaker 1: appreciate it. All Right, we're gonna move out of the
- 19:21Speaker 1: eight oh three, which I believe is South Carolina. We're
- 19:24Speaker 1: gonna head back to my neck of the woods in
- 19:27Speaker 1: the nine to seven eight.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Okay, what's up?
- 19:30Speaker 5: Mark n the gratest metal band of all time? Listener, Man,
- 19:35Speaker 5: there's a hierarchy here, right. I think just about anybody
- 19:39Speaker 5: who's ever owned a battle deck would probably agree to this.
- 19:43Speaker 5: It's gotta be Sabbath. It's gotta be Sabbath. They basically
- 19:47Speaker 5: invented the genre. Right. But then after Sabbath, sure, that's
- 19:50Speaker 5: when you can start talking about Maiden and Priest.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Okay, and then in my opinion, after.
- 19:57Speaker 5: That is like the Big Four, right, Metallica, Megadeth, Player
- 20:04Speaker 5: and Anthrax. So it's almost like, uh like different groups, right,
- 20:09Speaker 5: but Sabbath has to be above all of them in
- 20:12Speaker 5: I don't know, in my opinion side your absolute right,
- 20:15Speaker 5: halland Oaths is freaking awesome and uh yeah, love what
- 20:18Speaker 5: you do.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Keep it up, Rock and Roller nine. I like your hierarchy,
- 20:23Speaker 1: and I agree you gotta put Black Sabbath at the
- 20:27Speaker 1: top of the list. Sorry to say, Priest fans. Without
- 20:31Speaker 1: Black Sabbath, there just wouldn't be Judas Priest. Let's see
- 20:35Speaker 1: what's up in the five o seven?
- 20:39Speaker 6: Hey?
- 20:39Speaker 5: What up?
- 20:40Speaker 6: This is a handy from the five oh seven? Uh?
- 20:43Speaker 6: I was just gonna go ahead and let you know
- 20:44Speaker 6: that that play in with with the Uh, he's a bad,
- 20:51Speaker 6: bad band. That's the first time I've heard it. It's
- 20:54Speaker 6: on the mini episode leading into the Jewish Priest. And now,
- 20:57Speaker 6: I mean, I listen to most y'all's episodes, but that's
- 21:00Speaker 6: the first time I heard it. And I may everybody
- 21:02Speaker 6: like three times. Dude, just bounceing, just bounce it to.
- 21:06Speaker 6: He's a bad bad band with the beat. Love what
- 21:09Speaker 6: y'all do? Don't ever stop.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I love it, five O said, I love it, man,
- 21:14Speaker 1: I love the heart of that. That's my son when
- 21:16Speaker 1: he was four years old. Uh, speaking into the mic,
- 21:19Speaker 1: He's a bad bad man and uh yeah, you guys
- 21:22Speaker 1: become All Access members, you get to cop those mini episodes.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You'll hear all about what the five seven is talking about.
- 21:29Speaker 1: While I look for this email, I want to read
- 21:32Speaker 1: to you guys, I've got Iron Maiden cruising through my
- 21:35Speaker 1: head and Stranger to Strange Land, the first of all
- 21:42Speaker 1: the album art is incredible and wasted years. That is
- 21:47Speaker 1: the song I am thinking about with the epic. Course,
- 21:50Speaker 1: if I misspoke earlier, I'm in danger of losing serious
- 21:54Speaker 1: metal head credit here with these mistakes. I'm not sure
- 21:56Speaker 1: that was one, and I'm not going to go back
- 21:57Speaker 1: and listen and try to correct it. I'm just let
- 22:00Speaker 1: you know what's swimming through my head here in real time,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and I'm resisting the urge to launch into full Bruce
- 22:09Speaker 1: Dickinson chorus mode right now. No one wants to hear that,
- 22:12Speaker 1: especially not my kids seven seven five right saying, Hey,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I was bummed to hear about the passing of Ace
- 22:20Speaker 1: Freely yesterday. He was so much better than Kiss let
- 22:23Speaker 1: him be, talk about a musician hogtied by his band.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I bought all of the nineteen seventy eight solo albums
- 22:29Speaker 1: A Boy, the Guys and Kiss his hands down the best.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Every song is a straight banger. I agree. I love
- 22:34Speaker 1: that record, and I this is a really good take
- 22:38Speaker 1: about Ace Freely seven seven five. Ace Freely was, as
- 22:43Speaker 1: I mentioned this in an Instagram post, he was a
- 22:44Speaker 1: great guitar player who was I believe wrongly maligned by
- 22:47Speaker 1: guitar snobs as not being a great guitar player. Just
- 22:51Speaker 1: what's what's what's the word I'm looking for. It's not
- 22:54Speaker 1: anything profound, It's just the point is he is so
- 22:57Speaker 1: great so impactful, directly responsible for so many of us
- 23:04Speaker 1: picking up the guitars in the first place. And you
- 23:07Speaker 1: just cannot deny the guy that he was fantastic and
- 23:10Speaker 1: rest in peace. Ace. I know you're up there looking
- 23:13Speaker 1: down at an incredible legacy. Pour one out for Ace
- 23:18Speaker 1: freely seven seven five. Also goes on to say I
- 23:21Speaker 1: was obsessed with Priest in the early eighties and remember
- 23:24Speaker 1: waiting outside the courthouse in my hometown of Reno, Nevada
- 23:28Speaker 1: to try to meet them when the suicide case was
- 23:31Speaker 1: going on. Those poor kids were deeply disturbed, indeed very disturbed.
- 23:37Speaker 1: That's wild that you were there. I wonder what that
- 23:39Speaker 1: scene was like. Write us back seven seven five or
- 23:42Speaker 1: call us better leave a voicemail, tell us what that
- 23:45Speaker 1: scene was like at the courthouse back when Priest was
- 23:48Speaker 1: on trial. Incredible. Appreciate all the voicemails. I appreciate the text.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Appreciate the emails. Guys. Thank you keep them coming at
- 23:56Speaker 1: Disgrace Lampod on the socials. You want to hit me
- 23:58Speaker 1: up there as well, Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com,
- 24:02Speaker 1: on email as always six one seven nine oh six
- 24:05Speaker 1: six six three eight, voicemail and text I'll be back
- 24:09Speaker 1: right after this. I've decided that Martin Scorsese, that's mister
- 24:27Speaker 1: Martin Scorsese, is my favorite filmmaker of all time. I
- 24:32Speaker 1: say decided like this is a new revelation, but I've
- 24:35Speaker 1: known it for some time, and it's for many reasons.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But the main reason is that Scorsese is just the
- 24:42Speaker 1: most rock and roll of all the directors in my
- 24:45Speaker 1: mind anyway. So that's reason one. A reason one B.
- 24:50Speaker 1: We get into in the exclusive section of this episode
- 24:53Speaker 1: coming up by we, I mean me and doctor Zeth
- 24:55Speaker 1: Lundi from the prestigious Hollywood Land Hospital excuse me, Hollywood
- 24:59Speaker 1: Land Podcast. We're talking about this because of the new
- 25:02Speaker 1: five part documentary series on Martin Scorsese that was released
- 25:06Speaker 1: last week. Now listen, it's called mister Scorsese. Everyone who
- 25:11Speaker 1: knows him back from the old neighborhood who's in this
- 25:14Speaker 1: doc refers to him as Martin Scorsese, Scorsese, not Scorsese.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I've been saying Scorsese my whole life. Now I'm trying
- 25:24Speaker 1: to correct myself and say Scorceesi. It's like trying to
- 25:27Speaker 1: correct correct myself and say Nevada instead of Nevada. I
- 25:30Speaker 1: can't do it. It's hard. I try, I'm gonna fail.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I'm letting you know. Anyways, this doc was released last week.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I've seen three of the five episodes. It's incredible. Zeth
- 25:41Speaker 1: talks about this and a whole lot more in his
- 25:44Speaker 1: wrap party episode of hollywood Land. Bonus episode of hollywood
- 25:47Speaker 1: Land this week. Here's a taste of what you're missing
- 25:50Speaker 1: if you're not subscribed.
- 25:53Speaker 4: What was really great that I watched over the weekend
- 25:55Speaker 4: was Apple TV's new documentary series, Mister Scorsese. This is
- 25:59Speaker 4: a five part series, obviously about Martin Scorsese, directed by
- 26:03Speaker 4: Rebecca Miller. If you like Martin Scorsese or you just
- 26:06Speaker 4: like movies, I cannot recommend that. I mean, if if
- 26:09Speaker 4: you like art, if you like the getting inside an
- 26:12Speaker 4: artist's head and seeing how they do what they do,
- 26:17Speaker 4: I cannot recommend this series enough. I don't think there
- 26:20Speaker 4: has ever been a portrait, as Rebecca Miller calls it,
- 26:23Speaker 4: of a filmmaker that is this personal and this much
- 26:27Speaker 4: of a deep dive. And I'm not just talking into
- 26:29Speaker 4: his career, into his work, but into his life.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:32Speaker 4: The first two episodes were my favorites because they shed
- 26:36Speaker 4: so much light on Martin Scorsese's upbringing, his childhood, and
- 26:41Speaker 4: a big part of these first two episodes are conversations
- 26:43Speaker 4: and interviews with his childhood friends now and they really
- 26:47Speaker 4: bring this whole backstory to life. I knew about his backstory,
- 26:52Speaker 4: but I didn't know about it. With this much shading,
- 26:54Speaker 4: this much color, this much character, they bring the true
- 26:58Speaker 4: criminess of it all to the surface, the organized crime
- 27:01Speaker 4: that's been hanging out in the shadows, these shadowy figures
- 27:03Speaker 4: that his father has to deal with, and then how
- 27:06Speaker 4: all these things made their way into Scorsese's movies, not
- 27:10Speaker 4: only into his movies, but into how he dealt with
- 27:14Speaker 4: studios and executives and people who were difficult to deal with,
- 27:17Speaker 4: and all these lessons that he took from his father,
- 27:20Speaker 4: and how his father would deal with all these authority
- 27:23Speaker 4: figures in the neighborhood back in the day.
- 27:27Speaker 1: All right, that's doctor Zeth Lundy in the Hollywood Land podcast.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Subscribe to Hollywood Land wherever you get your podcasts. You know,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I felt like when I just read that, I felt
- 27:36Speaker 1: like the announcer, the the hockey announcer in slap Shot.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I don't know why if anyone's seen slapshot, maybe you'll
- 27:45Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about. It's a wild digression. I
- 27:47Speaker 1: got to reel it in, so that's what I'm gonna do. Okay.
- 27:49Speaker 1: This past weekend hold up, hold up, hold up, I
- 27:52Speaker 1: almost forgot This sixty second Sports rant and Under thirty
- 27:55Speaker 1: seconds is once again sponsored by five Hour Energies new
- 27:59Speaker 1: Pumpkin Spice Flame, your favorite fall drink in an energy shot.
- 28:02Speaker 1: You can pick up a Pumpkinspice five hour Energy Shot
- 28:05Speaker 1: available online at five hour Energy dot Com or Amazon.
- 28:08Speaker 1: This past weekend show, Hey Otani of the Los Angeles
- 28:11Speaker 1: Dodgers did something I'd never seen ever in all my
- 28:15Speaker 1: years of watching baseball. In a deciding Championship Series game.
- 28:19Speaker 1: He started the game on the mound, struck out the
- 28:21Speaker 1: first three batters of the game in the top of
- 28:23Speaker 1: the first inning, then got out to the plate to
- 28:25Speaker 1: hit lead off in the bottom of the first and
- 28:27Speaker 1: immediately homeward sheer dominance. It was incredible to watch. He
- 28:32Speaker 1: then went on to pitch six scoreless innings and homer
- 28:36Speaker 1: two more times. Now I told my kids they were
- 28:39Speaker 1: lucky to be alive during the same time period that
- 28:41Speaker 1: this dude is playing baseball. And then next day Monday,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I'm still on this high. My kids are all pumped
- 28:48Speaker 1: about it. I'm pumped about it. We're talking about it.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I turned on Boston Sports radio to hear cranky old dudes,
- 28:54Speaker 1: of which I definitely am not one, trying to make
- 28:56Speaker 1: the case that show, Hey, Otani is no Babe Ruth.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Now hold up, this is Apple's two Donuts. I can
- 29:06Speaker 1: almost excuse the case old heads try to make for
- 29:09Speaker 1: Ruth over Otani, but I can't excuse the certainty of
- 29:13Speaker 1: their argument or the smugness. Come on, come on, man,
- 29:18Speaker 1: dude plays in a completely different era, in a foreign country,
- 29:22Speaker 1: in a game that is played in a language that
- 29:24Speaker 1: he doesn't speak. Babe Ruth played in the dead ball era,
- 29:28Speaker 1: at a time when the league was segregated and when
- 29:30Speaker 1: a big portion of the talent was overseas fighting of war. Okay,
- 29:35Speaker 1: you can't compare the two, So just chill and enjoy
- 29:39Speaker 1: this magnificent display of dominance. Perhaps with a new Pumpkin
- 29:42Speaker 1: spice Flavor five hour energy shot, Matt, How do like
- 29:46Speaker 1: one thirty four? Jake? But I got to agree with
- 29:48Speaker 1: you on Otani. We're all lucky to see him play.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Hey, who's going to win the.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Series Dodders and six. That's what I'm saying. That was
- 29:56Speaker 1: a sports rant sponsored by five Hour Energies New Pumpkins
- 29:59Speaker 1: Spice Flavor. Of these new Pumpkin Spice five hour energy
- 30:02Speaker 1: shots our fall in a bottle and bring that classic
- 30:04Speaker 1: Pumpkin spice flavor that we all know and love, our
- 30:07Speaker 1: favorite fall drink, and an energy shot. You can pick

- 32:28Speaker 1: a community, a community of the obsessed. No one cares
- 32:33Speaker 1: about music, books, records, and the crime and grime that
- 32:37Speaker 1: ties them all together like you do. And well that's
- 32:40Speaker 1: a disgrace, all right. On December twenty third, nineteen eighty five,
- 32:43Speaker 1: two metal heads got wasted and fucked around with a
- 32:45Speaker 1: sod Off shotgun forever changing the trajectory of their favorite band,
- 32:49Speaker 1: Judas Priest. And this is what America was listening to
- 32:52Speaker 1: on that day. Number one Say You Say Me, Lionel
