- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your guide to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the White Tail Woods, presented by First Light, creating proven
- 0:08Speaker 1: versatile hunting apparel for the stand saddler blind, First Light,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Go Farther, Stay Longer, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast. I'm your guest host,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Tony Peterson, and today I'm speaking with Greg Litzinger, who
- 0:24Speaker 1: has made a name for himself by killing pressured bucks
- 0:28Speaker 1: on public land out east. All right, folks, welcome to
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Wire to Hunt podcast, which has brought to you
- 0:46Speaker 1: by First Light. And you guessed it. This is definitely
- 0:50Speaker 1: not Mark Kenyon's voice. It's your old backup QB. Tony.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Mark is actually often Europe this week, and he's in
- 0:57Speaker 1: a little town in Germany called Burghouse or bird Who's
- 1:01Speaker 1: in something anyway in that little town in Germany every
- 1:05Speaker 1: single year. Men. Well, I'm assuming this is only for men,
- 1:08Speaker 1: but I could be totally wrong. Compete for the best
- 1:11Speaker 1: beard and the best mustache. I know Mark has been
- 1:15Speaker 1: dreaming and bringing that trophy home for a long time
- 1:17Speaker 1: for that mustache, so I hope he has a good
- 1:20Speaker 1: showing out there today. I have a new Jersey bow
- 1:24Speaker 1: hunter named Greg Litzinger. Greg is a die hard public
- 1:28Speaker 1: land hunter who really understands how to deal with pressure
- 1:32Speaker 1: and who lives to scout throughout the winter. In fact,
- 1:36Speaker 1: that's the key to a lot of his success and
- 1:38Speaker 1: also the topic of much of this episode. Now, even
- 1:41Speaker 1: if you never set foot on public land, I think
- 1:44Speaker 1: you'll be able to glean some useful insight from Greg
- 1:47Speaker 1: because he's as legit as they come in the white
- 1:49Speaker 1: tail space. Greg, how are you doing? Man? What's happening?
- 1:55Speaker 1: We gotta we have to thank our mutual friend Clint
- 1:58Speaker 1: Campbell there over at Troops from the Stand podcast for
- 2:00Speaker 1: making this happen. And I reached out to Clint when
- 2:04Speaker 1: I was looking for people who are I'm like, who's
- 2:06Speaker 1: the most badass winner scouter you know? And he listed
- 2:10Speaker 1: about twenty people and then he said, or you could
- 2:12Speaker 1: just call Greg. Yeah, Clints, Uh, we've become really good friends.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Charity's last you know, I don't think. I was one
- 2:20Speaker 1: of his first few guests on his podcast and he
- 2:22Speaker 1: was just getting started and we're just like, yeah, he
- 2:25Speaker 1: lives like an hour and a half for me. We
- 2:26Speaker 1: just formed a you know, a good friendship, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 1: just good, not just a hunting friendships, just a friendship
- 2:33Speaker 1: all around. You know, he's a he's a solid dude. Dude.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I get jealous of Clint. He's gonna hear this, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: that he can put truck cameras out and find monsters.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And I'm like, dude, like you're finding all these megas.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's like, how do you find these jumbos? He was like, Oh,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it's the camera. I thought it'd be a good spot
- 2:55Speaker 1: and it's like this giant deer and I'm like, I'll
- 2:57Speaker 1: throw out twenty cameras and get like maybe one Pope season.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know how you do it, man Like.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So I was like, once he kind of figures that out,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the his his kill mode, I guess gets in killed mode.
- 3:10Speaker 1: There's deer in trouble man Like, he's got the stuff.
- 3:12Speaker 1: He just needs to, you know, tweak a few things
- 3:15Speaker 1: and he's going to be a world beater. Yeah, he's
- 3:18Speaker 1: he's always on good deer out there in Pennsylvania. Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You I don't know if people who are listening to
- 3:23Speaker 1: this can tell, but you don't sound like a typical
- 3:26Speaker 1: wired to hunt guest. You sound like you live in
- 3:28Speaker 1: a different place where you where are you at right now?
- 3:31Speaker 1: South Jersey? Yeah, And that's really why not North Jersey?
- 3:35Speaker 1: South Jersey. So for somebody who lives in Minnesota and
- 3:38Speaker 1: doesn't know the difference, what's the difference? Why why do
- 3:41Speaker 1: you specify that? Because there's in Jersey's like three it's
- 3:45Speaker 1: like north, Central and South. You know, in South Jersey
- 3:48Speaker 1: were relatively flat. We got Salt Marsh's, pine barrens, a
- 3:52Speaker 1: lot of agg you know, centrals, more farm rolling hills.
- 3:57Speaker 1: North you get into the mountains and a little more
- 4:02Speaker 1: developed developed areas, I guess, if you will, a lot
- 4:05Speaker 1: of traffic and PA, like through eighty runs through there,
- 4:08Speaker 1: so you get PA, New York, New Jersey, all kind
- 4:11Speaker 1: of meat up there. So there's a there's an influx
- 4:13Speaker 1: of different, different kinds of people. I guess, not in
- 4:18Speaker 1: a bad way. But it's different than South Jersey, you
- 4:21Speaker 1: know what. I have to confess something. So I live
- 4:23Speaker 1: in the suburbs of the Twin Cities, and people hear
- 4:26Speaker 1: that and all of the time they're like, oh, that's
- 4:30Speaker 1: the worst you live in, like where the riots were
- 4:32Speaker 1: and everything. I'm like, no, Like do you understand how
- 4:34Speaker 1: big the cities are? You know, like I'm not like
- 4:36Speaker 1: in downtown Minneapolis and you know, I've killed poping young
- 4:39Speaker 1: Bucks on public land ten minutes from my house. Like
- 4:42Speaker 1: it's not like I'm in city city. But when I
- 4:46Speaker 1: hear somebody say they're from Jersey, I don't think of
- 4:49Speaker 1: anything other than a city, Like I don't. I don't
- 4:52Speaker 1: think because my buddy Tim Kent hunts out there too,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and he's always describing it, and like I have this bias.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I've never been there, and no, you know what I mean.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It's like when I had one of my old podcasts,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I had a few guests on from the UK, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, nothing sounds dumber than some random Midwestern dude
- 5:09Speaker 1: talking about you know, like the UK, like like he
- 5:12Speaker 1: understands what it is. I'm like, I don't even really know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Like I don't even know if I can find this
- 5:16Speaker 1: on a map. And then when I hear you talk
- 5:18Speaker 1: about Jersey, I'm like, and you were, you know, we
- 5:19Speaker 1: were talking on the phone the other day and You're like, yeah,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know, I hunt in public land out here, and
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm like, I have such a skewed view of where
- 5:26Speaker 1: you live. And it makes me feel like an asshole
- 5:29Speaker 1: because people do that to me all the time. Yeah, Well,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Jersey it's a it's a pretty cool state. It's a
- 5:34Speaker 1: very it's a tough state to live in, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 1: as as you know, not to be political, but it's
- 5:39Speaker 1: it's a Democrat run state, and there's some laws that
- 5:43Speaker 1: it's just strange to me, a foreign to me, but
- 5:45Speaker 1: this is where I live. But it's a state that
- 5:47Speaker 1: the fishing game to do a good job of setting
- 5:49Speaker 1: land aside. When I got into hunting and would date
- 5:52Speaker 1: myself here with this, it's thirty sybe thirty one years ago.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It's not much public land in South Jersey. There's like
- 5:59Speaker 1: the bigger like pine barrens, but the pencilia grew up
- 6:02Speaker 1: everybody hundred one piece basically Lee High or Wingate. It
- 6:05Speaker 1: was like armaccore engineer type terrain you know, and read
- 6:09Speaker 1: deer just big read there, big bucks. Those spots that
- 6:13Speaker 1: you're talking about a couple hundred acres, there'd be I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 1: there'd be Lee High Road. You know, people that hopefully
- 6:21Speaker 1: from listeners here will know that road. But there'd be
- 6:24Speaker 1: fifteen trusting Lee High Road and it's only maybe a
- 6:26Speaker 1: mile long. There'd be fifteen people hunting that and it's
- 6:29Speaker 1: like everybody hunted there. It was just where they're in place,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you can hunt. And as the years went on, they
- 6:35Speaker 1: implemented the ant restrictions some zones, and the states started
- 6:39Speaker 1: buying up some old farms. Farmers were, you know, so
- 6:43Speaker 1: to the state. So the state bought a lot of
- 6:46Speaker 1: especially in Cell Jersey, a lot of farms, a lot
- 6:48Speaker 1: of big farms, and they started like piecing some things together,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and you know, on a short amount of time, it
- 6:53Speaker 1: seemed like the state land grew really quickly. And it
- 6:57Speaker 1: was nice for us public land guys, because you know,
- 7:02Speaker 1: it gave us a little room to spread out. And
- 7:05Speaker 1: North Jersey, they said, you got the morthern state forests.
- 7:08Speaker 1: There's Jenny Jump, there's Stoked State Forest, massive blocks of
- 7:12Speaker 1: unbroken timber, I mean huge for a small state. You know,
- 7:16Speaker 1: we're the Garden state. So people think New Jersey, they
- 7:20Speaker 1: don't think Guarden State. But there's a lot of across,
- 7:21Speaker 1: a lot of farms north central End Sound, so you
- 7:25Speaker 1: can hunt any type of terrain you want. New Jersey.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We have the mountains, we have unbroken you know, the
- 7:31Speaker 1: pine barrens, unbroken timber, just sandy soil, big rat bucks,
- 7:35Speaker 1: tiny bodies. You know, we got farm deer. I mean
- 7:39Speaker 1: we have salt marsh. You know, you can learn to
- 7:43Speaker 1: hunt deer and any type of terrain that a deer
- 7:45Speaker 1: exists across the country. It's a it's a good state
- 7:48Speaker 1: to learn. So you said you did you start hunting
- 7:51Speaker 1: deer on public? Yeah, I've first, you know, always hunt
- 7:56Speaker 1: the public. My dad, you know, we he was a
- 7:58Speaker 1: shift worker or two punts. Know, he's struggled, family six.
- 8:02Speaker 1: So it's not like we had money to splurge on
- 8:04Speaker 1: leases if or even like permission. We'd get a few
- 8:07Speaker 1: pieces here and there, but basically just wherever we can
- 8:10Speaker 1: get in. You know, canoe mostly could do. We did
- 8:12Speaker 1: a lot of canoe on um. But yeah, it's a
- 8:16Speaker 1: public climber. Being a used to the term mobile hunter.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You know, my first climber climber tree stand was a
- 8:24Speaker 1: Baker like my dad's baker that death trap. Yeah, so
- 8:30Speaker 1: I went with you know, I had the Baker tree
- 8:31Speaker 1: stand and it was so heavy. I was tiny. When
- 8:34Speaker 1: I got in a hunting it was hard for me
- 8:35Speaker 1: to climb up more than ten feet, like I was exhausted.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And then the log I had a light hang on
- 8:40Speaker 1: with scrown steps, which we weren't allowed to use, but
- 8:42Speaker 1: my dad we did anyway because that's what everybody did.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And loggy body climbers, um lone Wolf climber, lone Wolf,
- 8:53Speaker 1: hang on and then in the saddles, and that's been
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, I've been mobile since day one. You know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I have the exact same kind of origination story. I didn't.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I didn't hunt solely public land when I first started,
- 9:06Speaker 1: but we hunted a lot of it, and I was
- 9:08Speaker 1: mobile just because we didn't. We had one stand like
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, it was you put it up, you took
- 9:14Speaker 1: it down, you know. And I remember, you know, when
- 9:16Speaker 1: climbers came out, it was like, oh my god, this
- 9:18Speaker 1: is going to be the answer to all our problems.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And then you take them out, and you know, those
- 9:22Speaker 1: early ones were horrible, but the best we had. So
- 9:26Speaker 1: you're like, I'm gonna figure out how to make it worse.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And the worn and sweat plywood tree stand had like
- 9:32Speaker 1: the rubber strap in order of the APIs with the
- 9:37Speaker 1: chain wrapped the rubber like the motorcycle chain. Yeah. Lord,
- 9:41Speaker 1: people don't know how good that. People just get into
- 9:43Speaker 1: Honeynail had. It's a really good time to be a hunter.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Oh my god, I mean I think you know, when
- 9:49Speaker 1: I started out, I had I think it was I
- 9:51Speaker 1: think it was Amaker was the company, and it was
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, crazy heavy steel stand chain like you said,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but you know it's it's what we had. And then
- 10:01Speaker 1: my dad would make stands out of wood, but he
- 10:05Speaker 1: would make like a a platform that would attach with
- 10:09Speaker 1: a chain. So they were like forty seven pounds and
- 10:13Speaker 1: they were built like this is really hard to describe,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but they were built like with a almost a chamber
- 10:19Speaker 1: below them, so the supports in the platform and everything
- 10:21Speaker 1: would form like three quarters of a box almost, yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 1: And so you'd knock that top of that stand and
- 10:28Speaker 1: it would just echo through the bottom of there, and
- 10:30Speaker 1: it's just like these they were such pieces of shit.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But it's like, you know, if we had spots where
- 10:36Speaker 1: we wanted to hang a stand like on a field
- 10:37Speaker 1: edge or something and just leave it, like that's what
- 10:40Speaker 1: we used. And man, you're right, like the way that
- 10:44Speaker 1: we can hunt now in the access I mean, even
- 10:46Speaker 1: the clothing we have access now to its like, yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I know we sound old, but man hunters today the
- 10:52Speaker 1: advantages are so different, you know, but it seems like
- 10:57Speaker 1: it's sort of leveled off with pressure. Sure, you know,
- 11:00Speaker 1: like it's if you're if you're not onto something exclusive,
- 11:03Speaker 1: it seems like even though we have really you know,
- 11:05Speaker 1: banging equipment now and a lot of advantage that way,
- 11:08Speaker 1: it's like, man, if you're not on something that you're
- 11:10Speaker 1: paying to hunt you, the whole thing levels off quite
- 11:14Speaker 1: a bit just because you have a lot more pressure
- 11:15Speaker 1: out there. We agreed, it's uh I mean New Jersey,
- 11:19Speaker 1: it's it's one of the most populated states in the region.
- 11:23Speaker 1: It's not like you can I mean I deal with
- 11:26Speaker 1: people either from eyeshine, you know, ladder stands, baitings, legal,
- 11:32Speaker 1: crossbowings legal like the last ten years and like now
- 11:36Speaker 1: with technology, sell cameras and all this stuff. It's I think,
- 11:40Speaker 1: Hay call it the game, but it is completely changed,
- 11:44Speaker 1: m changed, dear, you know, and it makes it finding
- 11:48Speaker 1: a big buck a little more difficult because now everybody
- 11:51Speaker 1: has I've seen more cell cameras this year than uh
- 11:56Speaker 1: I care to even like imagine, like everybody's running cell
- 11:59Speaker 1: cameras and people that would never hunt, you know, or
- 12:04Speaker 1: going into the wood because we're getting the picture of
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know, a picture of a deer most some you know,
- 12:10Speaker 1: like I get pictures of people and it's like wow,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Like Dud's going in at three pm. It gets dark
- 12:15Speaker 1: at five thirty. I'm like, man, this isn't like the
- 12:17Speaker 1: Big West. Like it's like but they say it on YouTube,
- 12:20Speaker 1: but they see it on TV, you know, like it's
- 12:22Speaker 1: a It makes being on Big Deer on a regular
- 12:26Speaker 1: basis very difficult. If you're not in it, like like
- 12:29Speaker 1: really in it. New Jersey will beat you up and
- 12:32Speaker 1: like you gotta want it, like in a different way
- 12:35Speaker 1: than most people. Do you know, you might you might
- 12:38Speaker 1: go months without saying a good deal, like you know,
- 12:41Speaker 1: or you could be on them, you know from from
- 12:43Speaker 1: day one? Do you do you have pretty uh like
- 12:46Speaker 1: pretty liberal harvest out there, because I mean when you
- 12:49Speaker 1: talk about that and being able to being able to
- 12:51Speaker 1: bait public, private and you know, cross bowl legalization all
- 12:55Speaker 1: that stuff. Is it is it just a matter of
- 12:58Speaker 1: you know, your state game agency go. You know, there's
- 13:00Speaker 1: only so many places people are even allowed to hunt
- 13:02Speaker 1: in this state and so they won't kill dead. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:07Speaker 1: we can kill five bucks from September to January. Have
- 13:11Speaker 1: you ever did a year where you killed five three
- 13:14Speaker 1: is the most I've gotten. And it was like where
- 13:17Speaker 1: you have seasons where you can't do anything wrong. Like
- 13:19Speaker 1: you was walking out and was like, oh there's a
- 13:21Speaker 1: buck boom. Like that year I killed three three of
- 13:23Speaker 1: my bucks off in the ground. Uh you know the
- 13:27Speaker 1: one I killed him. I didn't find him, you know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: until after a fact, but you know he was he
- 13:33Speaker 1: was dead. But uh yeah, So you can kill a
- 13:37Speaker 1: lot of bucks if you want. Um, it makes in
- 13:39Speaker 1: some areas. You know. It's not to knock anybody, you know, um,
- 13:44Speaker 1: But if you have a good like two or three
- 13:46Speaker 1: years ago, we had a lot of I had a
- 13:47Speaker 1: lot of great young deer, a lot on camera. I've
- 13:51Speaker 1: seen him. I was like, man, it's gonna be a
- 13:52Speaker 1: banger year. And then we had an extreme cold front
- 13:57Speaker 1: during like dode musload or in January, and next year
- 14:00Speaker 1: it was like a ghost town. Like all these dear
- 14:02Speaker 1: got smoked, you know, because these tier never experienced cold
- 14:05Speaker 1: like that. And there's gonna be a poll of corn
- 14:07Speaker 1: or a cut cornfield at least hear a pond out
- 14:09Speaker 1: there to eat and two hundred yard musload or you know,
- 14:13Speaker 1: it's just you're just picking them off. Yeah, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and that's gun clubs. You know, all that stuff. Gun
- 14:19Speaker 1: clubs come through. You got a lot of nice young beer.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Like said, not not to say anything bad about that,
- 14:24Speaker 1: as hunting is hunting, you know, but if the dude
- 14:28Speaker 1: gets excited for a four pointer, you know, or a
- 14:30Speaker 1: six pointer, hey have at it. Man. But you have
- 14:33Speaker 1: ten people, twenty people doing that, well you really put
- 14:36Speaker 1: a hurting on the next ear hurt, you know. I
- 14:38Speaker 1: guess anyway you would deal with it would be the
- 14:42Speaker 1: extreme weather, the snowfall. You know, extreme snowfall, you get
- 14:45Speaker 1: to winter kill. Well, we have good you know, shotgun kills.
- 14:48Speaker 1: It's like the same thing. Like some spots it's like
- 14:52Speaker 1: there's nothing here, you know, and it's like you gotta
- 14:54Speaker 1: wait two or three years. It gets you know, some
- 14:56Speaker 1: age back in that area. Yeah, and sometimes it never
- 14:59Speaker 1: comes back, depending on the pressure. When when they say
- 15:03Speaker 1: I always think, you know, when this state game agencies
- 15:05Speaker 1: like you know what, how about a five buck limit,
- 15:08Speaker 1: that's like just that's like saying, how about just shoot
- 15:11Speaker 1: unlimited bucks? Yeah, I mean because and very few people
- 15:14Speaker 1: are going to fill that limit, but they're they're not
- 15:16Speaker 1: going to stop. Yes, it's and that's too with like
- 15:19Speaker 1: bo and gone like Jersey. I mean they'll they make
- 15:22Speaker 1: you buy a regular fall bow and then the end
- 15:26Speaker 1: of October you have to buy a permit bow, which
- 15:28Speaker 1: is another twenty eight dollars and twenty eight dollars because
- 15:31Speaker 1: you gotta buy a permit and then you gotta buy
- 15:34Speaker 1: a buck tag and then a permit for the zone
- 15:36Speaker 1: you're hunting. So have you hunt like I hunt three zones? Well,
- 15:39Speaker 1: for permit bow, it will cost me one hundred bucks
- 15:41Speaker 1: to hunt, plus the twenty eight dollars to original license.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And then if I want a gun hunt, well there's
- 15:46Speaker 1: another thirty bucks. And I want to win a bow hunt,
- 15:48Speaker 1: there's another thirty bucks. A Jersey William to death. Yeah,
- 15:53Speaker 1: they keep you coming back. Have you seen you kind
- 15:56Speaker 1: of alluded to just a high amount of pressure the
- 16:01Speaker 1: whole your whole life hunting out there? Have you seen
- 16:03Speaker 1: an uptick in like the last five years. Are you
- 16:06Speaker 1: seeing more people out there? I'm seeing more people by
- 16:11Speaker 1: boat for sure. Um, a lot of you know, with
- 16:16Speaker 1: YouTube and that this generation of hunting, I guess hunters
- 16:22Speaker 1: they say it, they do it so crossbows legal. So
- 16:26Speaker 1: we get a lot of gun hunters that are are
- 16:28Speaker 1: bow hunting now with the crossbow, and a lot of
- 16:31Speaker 1: gun hunters come in by boat. Well now that I'll
- 16:33Speaker 1: come in by with the crossbow. So a lot of
- 16:35Speaker 1: my spots that were good fall are not so good anymore.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Some of the swamps were just it's just not there.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's and it's it's not worth it to wake up
- 16:46Speaker 1: at two to catch a tie to go hunt somewhere
- 16:49Speaker 1: or paddle you know, you know far and Walter's waist
- 16:53Speaker 1: deep swamp for a mediocre buck if you will. You know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: it's and like you said, it's hit or miss. Like
- 17:01Speaker 1: some years it's amazing. Other years she's like out here
- 17:04Speaker 1: for like five days, Megan, I ain't seen a theater.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I ain't heard them. I smell them like no splashing
- 17:09Speaker 1: in the water, you know, And it's like, oh, but
- 17:11Speaker 1: that's just that's the way it goes. I guess anywhere
- 17:14Speaker 1: do you feel like? So I'm assuming when you say
- 17:16Speaker 1: that that you used to have used to do some
- 17:18Speaker 1: water access and it worked out pretty well for you.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And now because I feel the same way, like there
- 17:24Speaker 1: used to be some tricks like that you could get
- 17:26Speaker 1: away from people, and it feels like there's no secrets
- 17:29Speaker 1: left and I know like if you if you're listening
- 17:31Speaker 1: to this and you hunt out west and you el
- 17:32Speaker 1: cont or whatever and over the counter unit, it's the
- 17:34Speaker 1: same deal, Like, yeah, there's not You're not going to
- 17:38Speaker 1: outwork the competition, like you just there's no there's no hide,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, honey hidie holes. I guess if you will anymore.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Like the everybody's got an aerial map whatever software using
- 17:49Speaker 1: You've got up to date imaging of as it's happening,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you know. So it's like it's hard to find, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: those spots that were before you found them by accident, Like, oh,
- 17:58Speaker 1: what's this? You know when you twenty years ago you
- 18:01Speaker 1: find the funnel all this buck side, you know what
- 18:03Speaker 1: it is? You honey, you start killing some deer, seeing
- 18:04Speaker 1: some deer, and now you look at it, you're like, oh,
- 18:07Speaker 1: it's a funnel because you got this, but when you're
- 18:09Speaker 1: in it, you don't know what's there. It's like all
- 18:10Speaker 1: those bucks sides are hunting. You're killing now from air
- 18:13Speaker 1: and filter are like, oh, you know, it's like hunting
- 18:15Speaker 1: the mountainsick saddle. So you go to any mountains terrain
- 18:18Speaker 1: saddles each seem to pick out. You go to almost
- 18:21Speaker 1: every saddle human side, and deer will avoid them, even
- 18:24Speaker 1: though it's a good bottle neck go the will a
- 18:27Speaker 1: pinch point if you will, dear, just avoid them u
- 18:30Speaker 1: during honey hours. So bottlenecks around here in farm country
- 18:34Speaker 1: and swamp same way. And these deer are just they're
- 18:39Speaker 1: really you know, they're surviving and they're they're thriving in
- 18:43Speaker 1: some areas. Man, I think and listen. I love on X,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I love the tools that we have, but man, that
- 18:51Speaker 1: the way that that sort of leveled things off for
- 18:54Speaker 1: people is incredible. I mean you just think about you know,
- 18:58Speaker 1: we're right in the heart of winters outing right now,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and this is the time when you get in and
- 19:02Speaker 1: try to find rubs and figure some of that stuff out.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And you know you used to just like stumble across
- 19:07Speaker 1: a little island in the swamp or something, you know,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, man, like this is freaking money.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And now anyone, like almost every hundred eld there can
- 19:16Speaker 1: pull up their phone and find that and you know
- 19:18Speaker 1: whether they'll do the work to get in there. But
- 19:20Speaker 1: even if only a couple of people do, or you know,
- 19:22Speaker 1: like you said, you know, if you wait for that
- 19:23Speaker 1: time to roll in and you go in, you know,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you think, man, like, not very many people are going
- 19:28Speaker 1: to go buy a thousand dollars fifteen hundred dollars kayak
- 19:31Speaker 1: just for that, Like no tons of people do that. Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 1: that shit's everywhere now. And it's like i I've last
- 19:41Speaker 1: year and even this year, like hunting, I've I've kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of put my phone in my pocket and I've gotten
- 19:45Speaker 1: away from like trying to find precise pinpoint spots, and
- 19:49Speaker 1: I've let just the deer sign and the thrain just
- 19:53Speaker 1: go very old school, you know, and I find something,
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'll just mark it real quick, you know, and then
- 20:00Speaker 1: it kind of makes it fun again, less like a
- 20:03Speaker 1: less monotonous. You know. I'm just kind of like I'm
- 20:06Speaker 1: almost like still hunting. I'm just falling the sign and
- 20:09Speaker 1: I'm I'm finding areas, especially like some of the big
- 20:12Speaker 1: woods I'm hunting by here by my house. You know,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm finding areas that's got zero human pressure because you
- 20:18Speaker 1: look at the map, they're like there's nothing that's making that.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You know, hunters go, oh what's this? Do you know
- 20:25Speaker 1: that this is a spot where people don't go, So
- 20:28Speaker 1: they're like, oh, party over here, and sometimes it's it
- 20:30Speaker 1: might even be a hundred yards off a cart root
- 20:33Speaker 1: or fifty yards off the car room. Everybody's just you know,
- 20:35Speaker 1: now with the e bikes too, we gotta deal with
- 20:37Speaker 1: the e bikes. They just blow right on pass. And
- 20:39Speaker 1: these bucks are just hanging out watching all these people,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, And I guess they've probably always always done that,
- 20:45Speaker 1: but I find that more and more, and there's overlooked
- 20:49Speaker 1: spots and random spot people just wall pasted. Yeah, dude,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I find that too. Where you know, if I'm scouting
- 20:56Speaker 1: bluffy country or river bottom country with like limited cover
- 20:59Speaker 1: or real terrain, that's easy to read. It's like everybody
- 21:03Speaker 1: is at the same level. But if you get into
- 21:05Speaker 1: some of that mono habitat, like big wood stuff where
- 21:08Speaker 1: you know, an elevation change of twenty feets a big one. Yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 1: Then when you get into that stuff and everything from
- 21:14Speaker 1: overhead kind of looks the same, then you start realizing
- 21:17Speaker 1: like the subtlety of deer movement and sign and I
- 21:20Speaker 1: think I'm with you right there too. One, you know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: like especially right now, when you're winner scouting, I'll pick
- 21:26Speaker 1: out spots on on X or whatever, and they're like,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I'm going to go look at that. But the interesting
- 21:32Speaker 1: stuff I find most of the time is between that
- 21:34Speaker 1: and something else, just like following a whim. Yeah, total total.
- 21:38Speaker 1: It's not random because you're you know, you're using your
- 21:40Speaker 1: instincts that we've you hold over the years. But it's
- 21:44Speaker 1: those spots that I find. My biggest Bucks buck sign
- 21:48Speaker 1: like and the big ones by my house. Three years ago,
- 21:51Speaker 1: I stom upon like hammer signpost rob It's like thirty
- 21:55Speaker 1: of in this one little block. So I put a
- 21:58Speaker 1: bunch of cameras out there and it's like a big
- 22:01Speaker 1: buckle roll through there. But he would never rub on
- 22:03Speaker 1: a rub. There's always the little guys big Bucks new
- 22:06Speaker 1: it was just you know, these little guys would tear
- 22:08Speaker 1: up the rubs like you have big old seedars and
- 22:11Speaker 1: everything look real tall, you know, like nice dear. But
- 22:13Speaker 1: the bigger ulder box would never rub. Some of the
- 22:15Speaker 1: bigger Bucks don't scrape. They just know that this is
- 22:18Speaker 1: a hot spot for some reason. I still can't figure
- 22:20Speaker 1: out why all these rubs there, because there's no terrain,
- 22:23Speaker 1: there's no nothing, there's no edge. It's just a spot.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I think people don't go and it's probably been that
- 22:28Speaker 1: way for years. Because someboy's rubs are old and it's
- 22:31Speaker 1: a smack dab in the middle of like nothingness, and
- 22:35Speaker 1: it's like it was by pure accident I found them,
- 22:37Speaker 1: like I remember it, like because it's like the we
- 22:40Speaker 1: had a little bit of snow and so you can
- 22:42Speaker 1: kind of see and that's just seen this rub just
- 22:44Speaker 1: like like a beak and way out there. I was like,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and I love rubs, big rubs, you know, and I've
- 22:49Speaker 1: seen that. I was like, I know what that is.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And I've been in that piece of woods for least
- 22:53Speaker 1: fifteen twenty years, and I'm like, you market, you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: it's like I don't even whether it is that, like
- 22:59Speaker 1: it's there's no nothing, but all the bucks come through there.
- 23:03Speaker 1: It's just a weird, strange place. But it's so hard
- 23:06Speaker 1: to get to unless I can like, you know, air
- 23:09Speaker 1: drop from a parachute, you know, like you have to
- 23:11Speaker 1: cross so many deer trails and so much laurel and
- 23:14Speaker 1: so much brier swamp to get to it, Like you
- 23:16Speaker 1: kind of only get worn through sits. So if it
- 23:18Speaker 1: ain't there, it's like you wait for that mid November
- 23:21Speaker 1: and it's like nothing but the sign and the sum
- 23:26Speaker 1: of the trail kind of pictures like that's a spot
- 23:28Speaker 1: to be. It might take me three or four years
- 23:30Speaker 1: kill a deer there, but that's where I'll be. Yeah, dude,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I think sometimes because I think we look at a
- 23:38Speaker 1: concentration or rubs like that like that. To me, that's
- 23:41Speaker 1: my favorite thing. Like if I find lots of rubs
- 23:44Speaker 1: in a really tight area, I'm super interested in that.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And I think we look at it a lot of
- 23:49Speaker 1: times and we sell this like, Okay, that's a staging
- 23:52Speaker 1: area because they bed it over here and they feed
- 23:54Speaker 1: over there, or you know, there's like some dear explanation
- 23:58Speaker 1: for it. But I think a lot of times, like
- 24:00Speaker 1: you're talking about, it's because people aren't there, and so
- 24:03Speaker 1: you have a whole bunch of bucks who know that's
- 24:06Speaker 1: one spot. And so I don't know if that's correlated,
- 24:10Speaker 1: you know, you bump into a bunch of strangers, if
- 24:12Speaker 1: that's correlated to making more sign in that spot, just
- 24:14Speaker 1: because there's so much like deer scent there. But it
- 24:17Speaker 1: makes me wonder because when you see, I've got a
- 24:20Speaker 1: buddy who owns some land in southwestern Wisconsin runs cameras
- 24:24Speaker 1: on there all year and he has like Brassica plot
- 24:27Speaker 1: for a late season hunk, you know, and you get
- 24:29Speaker 1: these bucks that you've never seen, like they weren't there
- 24:32Speaker 1: off fall or summer, and all of a sudden, when
- 24:34Speaker 1: you know the weather really sucks and they need that
- 24:36Speaker 1: food source, you put all these deer who don't really
- 24:40Speaker 1: know each other together and then you're getting you know,
- 24:42Speaker 1: like images like over and over a bucks fighting and
- 24:45Speaker 1: testing each other out. And I'm like, I wonder if
- 24:48Speaker 1: on public land during the season, there's just places where
- 24:50Speaker 1: the bucks are like holy shit, like I gotta get
- 24:53Speaker 1: somewhere where people aren't and all the bucks, maybe not
- 24:56Speaker 1: all of them, but a lot of them figure it out,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and they're just more prone to being a little more aggressive,
- 25:00Speaker 1: have been making sign and just like just because they're
- 25:02Speaker 1: all there together, I've I firmly believe that, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I had a conversation with a guy the Harrisbrook Show
- 25:09Speaker 1: about ropes because he's like, I found all these robes
- 25:11Speaker 1: and I was like, you know, explaining my thoughts and robes,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and we kind of came to the same conclusion. You know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: it's just an area that a lot of pressure from
- 25:19Speaker 1: all around, and the pressures come from the out and
- 25:22Speaker 1: it's pushing the deer into the center, and most people
- 25:24Speaker 1: aren't going to put that work to get in there,
- 25:27Speaker 1: especially like in October and November, because it's still a
- 25:30Speaker 1: lot of you know, there's a lot of high stemcounts
- 25:32Speaker 1: stuff still happening. And often remember it's you can't see
- 25:36Speaker 1: very far, you know, limited visibility, but fear you know,
- 25:39Speaker 1: or they use all their senses. They have a lot
- 25:42Speaker 1: better senses than we do, so they might not see well,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but they can smell and hear, you know. So I
- 25:48Speaker 1: just I firmly believe that's that's what's happening there. When
- 26:06Speaker 1: you talk about some of the stuff that you scout
- 26:09Speaker 1: and where you hunt, it reminds me so much of
- 26:10Speaker 1: some of the stuff that I hunt, like northern Wisconsin.
- 26:13Speaker 1: But it also reminds me when you when you think
- 26:15Speaker 1: about a little area you're talking about like that where
- 26:17Speaker 1: you you know, maybe you go in and winter scout
- 26:19Speaker 1: it now and you're like, man, at some point in
- 26:22Speaker 1: the fall, this is where you kill that one thirty
- 26:25Speaker 1: because of like you know, the high stem count like
- 26:28Speaker 1: you're talking about, and just just like the location of it,
- 26:31Speaker 1: then you go do a hunt like in Iowa that
- 26:33Speaker 1: we talked about that. You said you never wanted to do,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and you're like, I want to find that because my
- 26:37Speaker 1: instincts tell me find that spot and it doesn't exist,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and it doesn't freaking matter, Like you don't. You're you're
- 26:43Speaker 1: looking for something you don't even need because it's it's
- 26:46Speaker 1: like the only way to get it done in some places,
- 26:49Speaker 1: and totally I wouldn't say irrelevant, but not nearly as
- 26:53Speaker 1: important in a place with a you know, a high
- 26:55Speaker 1: amount of deer and maybe not the most pressure out
- 26:58Speaker 1: there in a lot of like good quality deer. And
- 27:00Speaker 1: it's so it's like, it's weird how different this becomes
- 27:03Speaker 1: in the different places that you can hunt. And there's
- 27:07Speaker 1: parts like I've hunted some private farms in Jersey and
- 27:10Speaker 1: like there's a couple of guys into the hunt Central
- 27:12Speaker 1: Jersey and nake kill I mean hammer deer, but they
- 27:15Speaker 1: have five six hund acres. But the pressure, you know,
- 27:18Speaker 1: a couple forms a hunted deer behave a lot better
- 27:23Speaker 1: than than the public. I wouldn't say it's Midwestern like,
- 27:25Speaker 1: but the deer come out and fields they daylight at
- 27:28Speaker 1: four o'clock in the afternoon. You're like, because it's like,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I'm not used to this. It's like hunting field edges
- 27:33Speaker 1: and hedgerows. I'm like, it's farm to me because I
- 27:35Speaker 1: don't do it. So I sat and field edges or
- 27:37Speaker 1: hedgerows and I feel naked because I'm like, what am
- 27:39Speaker 1: I doing out here? There's nothing going to happen. And
- 27:41Speaker 1: then four o'clock just pile out in the field and
- 27:43Speaker 1: You're like, like this really happens, Like it's you know,
- 27:48Speaker 1: very tv issh if you will. And you know, the
- 27:51Speaker 1: pressure area gets extreme pressure most of you know, and
- 27:55Speaker 1: you can find some little pockets here and here with
- 27:57Speaker 1: no pressure. But these dear have been pressured your whole life,
- 28:01Speaker 1: so it don't really take much, you know, from them
- 28:03Speaker 1: deer to alter into survival mode, you know. And we
- 28:06Speaker 1: have that early season in September, you know, a second week,
- 28:10Speaker 1: but you have to shoot a dough where you shoot
- 28:12Speaker 1: a buck, which is just earn a buck, they call it.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Like I've passed so many good deer, Like opening morning,
- 28:17Speaker 1: like here comes a hammer and I'm like I was
- 28:19Speaker 1: just there's a group of dose here all week long.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Opening morning, here comes to hammer. I'm like, hey, all right,
- 28:25Speaker 1: I've never seen you before. But you know, it's like
- 28:28Speaker 1: a very frustrating time in September. But a lot of
- 28:32Speaker 1: people are running cameras, a lot of people are baiting,
- 28:34Speaker 1: running minerals say they're pressure and deer even for the
- 28:37Speaker 1: season starts, you know. And I've noticed that change in
- 28:40Speaker 1: the last ten years, I'll say last five years, it's
- 28:44Speaker 1: gotten extremely difficult to get on good bucks, you know
- 28:49Speaker 1: without really you'll blowing them out, you know, because prime
- 28:54Speaker 1: example last year in Delaware, pretty much high pressure area.
- 29:00Speaker 1: These bucks were coming out into the field, the bean field,
- 29:01Speaker 1: this little pocket and I had a camera there all
- 29:04Speaker 1: summer and then we decided to go down and hunt it.
- 29:08Speaker 1: And I pulled a camera like after the third day
- 29:11Speaker 1: because we've seen some trucks there, so we didn't hunt it.
- 29:13Speaker 1: A bunch of boot tracks. A guy walked for like
- 29:15Speaker 1: three days for a season. A hunter walked the edge
- 29:18Speaker 1: of the field with his family, you know, walked the beans,
- 29:22Speaker 1: the bucks, big old the seven pounter came in, smelled
- 29:24Speaker 1: it going. Now like so there's a whole week, like
- 29:28Speaker 1: he was there like for hours on end. Like I
- 29:30Speaker 1: got hundreds and hundreds of pictures here in a short time,
- 29:33Speaker 1: like this was this cool area. He smelled one human,
- 29:36Speaker 1: it was out, and all the other small bucks skill
- 29:38Speaker 1: came out, but like the two mature ones, we're like, nope,
- 29:41Speaker 1: we're out. So it just took one encounter with the
- 29:43Speaker 1: human and farmers walked that field edge all the time,
- 29:46Speaker 1: you know, like human scents not foreign to him. But
- 29:49Speaker 1: it took a guy that was a little more human scent,
- 29:52Speaker 1: probably died in the woods a little bit, and that
- 29:54Speaker 1: buck was like, ah, deuces, and it was like I've
- 29:57Speaker 1: never seen him. We hunted down it, We hunted him
- 29:59Speaker 1: pretty hard, and he just was never be founding it. Didn't.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You know, my buddy was hunting there a few times.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I think so that I wish every hunter could learn
- 30:09Speaker 1: that lesson quick because man, there are situations where you
- 30:14Speaker 1: can bump them around and they're not that sensitive to it.
- 30:18Speaker 1: But when you're dealing with deer that are, it's an
- 30:20Speaker 1: eye opener. I had that happened to me. I must
- 30:24Speaker 1: have been about three years ago in Minnesota on a
- 30:26Speaker 1: private farm that I have, where it's like you might
- 30:29Speaker 1: kill a good one opening night on a field, like
- 30:33Speaker 1: you just might because they're they're not onto it yet.
- 30:35Speaker 1: And I had I had a spot. The year before,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I killed a really good one opening night, and so
- 30:41Speaker 1: I hung a camera there the next year, still elf alfa,
- 30:44Speaker 1: like may you know maybe right? Yeah, And I had
- 30:48Speaker 1: quite a few good ones coming out using it, like
- 30:51Speaker 1: fighting in the field right by the stand, Like I
- 30:53Speaker 1: was like, this is going to happen again, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 1: And I should know better because I never do. Lightning
- 30:58Speaker 1: never strikes twice for me. Like if I kill a
- 31:00Speaker 1: buck here, I might as well write that spot off
- 31:02Speaker 1: forever because it's over. But I had that camera on
- 31:06Speaker 1: video mode and went out there and say it wasn't
- 31:09Speaker 1: a cell camera. I went out there and sat opening
- 31:11Speaker 1: nights a few doughs. It was just dead. So I
- 31:13Speaker 1: checked the camera. And the day before the season, I
- 31:16Speaker 1: had a different hunter walk in there walking his dog
- 31:19Speaker 1: blasting Motley crue like you hear the whole thing, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 1: and walked in there onto the trail of those bucks,
- 31:25Speaker 1: come out and hung a camera on it. And he
- 31:27Speaker 1: even had his daughter with him, and his daughter said,
- 31:29Speaker 1: whose camera is that? Like I heard the whole exchange
- 31:32Speaker 1: and just shut it down. I mean they were just like,
- 31:36Speaker 1: we're not using this anymore, and I just wish, like
- 31:39Speaker 1: I wish you could know, like that's that impact is
- 31:42Speaker 1: like it's not little, like that can be a really
- 31:45Speaker 1: bad deal, and so you think about it. We never
- 31:47Speaker 1: look at that for ourselves, like it's always this dipshit
- 31:51Speaker 1: that walks in there that you're like, oh, I hate
- 31:52Speaker 1: that guy because he blew my dear out. We never
- 31:54Speaker 1: think it were the dipshit, but we are all the time.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And the more that you you hunt those kind of deer,
- 31:59Speaker 1: the more you learn, and like your presence is is big. Well,
- 32:03Speaker 1: I remember, you know, we grew up, they said a
- 32:05Speaker 1: long time ago. But reading articles from Miles Keller, like
- 32:09Speaker 1: his thought process like groundset, you know, and all that
- 32:12Speaker 1: stuff like groundset is so important to understand. How you're
- 32:17Speaker 1: set is what you're going to set, you're gonna leave
- 32:19Speaker 1: like tall grass, short grass, do dowey grass. And if
- 32:23Speaker 1: you if a big buck cut your track, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and it's fresh with a new pressure area. They know
- 32:30Speaker 1: of a two hour track versus ceo a two day
- 32:33Speaker 1: old track, but they know humans in here and you're
- 32:36Speaker 1: they're usually not here. They're going to insurvival mode for
- 32:39Speaker 1: most part most bucks, you know, there might be a
- 32:41Speaker 1: few outliers at just like they're so crafty they don't
- 32:45Speaker 1: really bother them. But I think any bucks that shot
- 32:47Speaker 1: at any any kind of one hundred stops about that
- 32:52Speaker 1: buck knows like, well, I know what that is, you know.
- 32:55Speaker 1: So I was like those moments you're just educating news dear.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You're going to check your camera, you know, or hunting
- 33:00Speaker 1: the wrong winds, your groundset, not paying attention to your
- 33:04Speaker 1: intron exit it Really you're helping the deer and you're
- 33:08Speaker 1: hurting yourself. Do you find you know, being in a
- 33:12Speaker 1: state New Jersey, it's a little bit weird because a
- 33:16Speaker 1: lot of states allow baiting on private but not public.
- 33:20Speaker 1: But it's wide open there. Do you see like with
- 33:23Speaker 1: your trail cameras you go pop a trail camera on
- 33:25Speaker 1: a tree, do you see like do you get negative
- 33:28Speaker 1: reactions on that? Because I know where I hunt in Wisconsin,
- 33:31Speaker 1: they can bait and man if I put a camera
- 33:34Speaker 1: out and those those deer blow up on it like
- 33:37Speaker 1: they are not tolerant of it. Yeah, they some of
- 33:41Speaker 1: the higher end models. Um Like, I don't buy high
- 33:44Speaker 1: end modeling more because I get a lot stolen, so
- 33:47Speaker 1: I buy cheaper ones and they're noisy. There's something going on,
- 33:51Speaker 1: there's an audible click, you know, you can barely hear it,
- 33:55Speaker 1: you know, or like the red anything any camera I
- 33:58Speaker 1: got that's red than deer onto it. They they're spooky.
- 34:03Speaker 1: They're a cage especial video that it stays red long
- 34:05Speaker 1: time you see it, especially like older dose. Older dos
- 34:08Speaker 1: are the worst. I mean, they get up to it
- 34:09Speaker 1: and they smell it, and you know, so I try
- 34:13Speaker 1: to set my cameras up high, and I do. I
- 34:17Speaker 1: do my best to wear rubber gloves and rubber boots
- 34:20Speaker 1: when checking cameras because I know, like you're especially you
- 34:23Speaker 1: when it's hot out, you touch your face. I know
- 34:25Speaker 1: it's not going to help much, but it does help some,
- 34:27Speaker 1: you know, to get your set up a little bit higher,
- 34:29Speaker 1: and not to be touchy grabby with the bark, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: especially does mature does Jersey or I think they're harder
- 34:37Speaker 1: to hunt than a mature buck because you have her
- 34:40Speaker 1: plus her whole, you know, thirty other deer sheep bread
- 34:43Speaker 1: and list five years with her, you know, if she's
- 34:45Speaker 1: onto something, all the rest is on something. Yeah, yeah, nobody,
- 34:50Speaker 1: We've We've done episodes on this. I've written about this.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Nobody talks about that, how how a game does are?
- 34:56Speaker 1: Thank you? And when you talked about earn a buck
- 34:58Speaker 1: there I you know, when I first started hunting Wisconsin,
- 35:02Speaker 1: some parts had earned a buck. And man, you want
- 35:04Speaker 1: to be reminded that you're not the greatest deer hunter
- 35:06Speaker 1: in the world. Have to shoot a dough before you
- 35:09Speaker 1: can kill a buck. That can That can give you
- 35:11Speaker 1: like anxiety attacks because it's when all of a sudden,
- 35:14Speaker 1: when you're not just like, oh, at any given point
- 35:16Speaker 1: in the season, if a doe walks by, a might shooter,
- 35:18Speaker 1: when you're like, I have to target one and I
- 35:21Speaker 1: have to make it happen. That's a different deal. It's
- 35:24Speaker 1: a I shot this old dough. I had her aged out.
- 35:27Speaker 1: She was eight and a half and I hunted her.
- 35:30Speaker 1: She had short, little stubby legs, you know, I knew
- 35:31Speaker 1: it was her, but she was a made shark, you know.
- 35:34Speaker 1: And there was this old wooden stand. Every time like
- 35:37Speaker 1: falling down. Every time she went by this stand, she
- 35:40Speaker 1: would literally rustle her feet in the leaves to get that,
- 35:45Speaker 1: you know, because I'm sure when she was a falling
- 35:47Speaker 1: you know, yearling, her mom showed her or a hunter
- 35:50Speaker 1: wasn't there, so she would literally stare at the stand
- 35:52Speaker 1: it's fallen down in a tree. But she knew that
- 35:55Speaker 1: was dangerous. So anything that was like horizontal, up in
- 35:58Speaker 1: the up in the air, she was not having it.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And whenever I hunted, she would pick me out. I
- 36:03Speaker 1: don't care if I was, you know, ten feet on
- 36:05Speaker 1: the ground or twenty. She came in that wood lot,
- 36:08Speaker 1: she would just like look around and she would pegged
- 36:10Speaker 1: me every time. I finally killed her in winter Bow
- 36:14Speaker 1: for a first day of winter Bow a few years ago,
- 36:16Speaker 1: and she came in blowing. The win was good. She
- 36:19Speaker 1: came in the wood lot blowing. I don't know why,
- 36:22Speaker 1: but she was on edge. She came in. I had
- 36:25Speaker 1: a good ground, like everything was perfect. She was on edge,
- 36:29Speaker 1: like she just knew als in that wood lot, and
- 36:32Speaker 1: she got all way up to my tree, you know,
- 36:34Speaker 1: like came right out to the base of their tree.
- 36:36Speaker 1: And I'm like, she knows exactly where I'm at, you know,
- 36:38Speaker 1: I bounced all around, But she got in that wood
- 36:40Speaker 1: lot and I don't know if she see me like skylighted,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know, in the dark or whatever, but she came
- 36:45Speaker 1: rinking and based their tree in the dark, and then
- 36:47Speaker 1: kind of pulled out and right at first light, I
- 36:49Speaker 1: just let her have it, you know, and it was
- 36:52Speaker 1: like the greatest accomplishment as far as like winter Bow
- 36:55Speaker 1: hunt or even you know. She was a big dough
- 36:57Speaker 1: old dough like teeth, like she had a big infection
- 36:59Speaker 1: in her face. She probably would have died. You know,
- 37:01Speaker 1: she had like three babies in her But she was
- 37:04Speaker 1: probably the toughest eater I've ever hunted. And I specifically
- 37:08Speaker 1: targeted her because she beat my ass so many times.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta kill you at a sheer principle,
- 37:14Speaker 1: like I can't go out like this. Well, I mean,
- 37:17Speaker 1: think about an eight and a half year old deer.
- 37:21Speaker 1: That's like the equivalent of a ninety year old person
- 37:24Speaker 1: who's never left their town, right, Like they live in
- 37:26Speaker 1: a town of eight thousand people and they've never left
- 37:29Speaker 1: it their entire life. Like they know everything, you know
- 37:32Speaker 1: what I mean? That deer has been out there every
- 37:35Speaker 1: day for eight and a half years, Like you're not
- 37:38Speaker 1: you know, you hang a new stand, you hang a
- 37:40Speaker 1: new camera, and she walks by, She's going to be
- 37:42Speaker 1: aware of that. Yeah, yeah, she was. Those kg dos
- 37:47Speaker 1: are you know, and they blow up a lot of
- 37:49Speaker 1: my good spots, especially like during the run, like they
- 37:51Speaker 1: have a they have a better sense than I think
- 37:53Speaker 1: the Bucks, you know, because Bucks are loved you'll come November.
- 37:56Speaker 1: They're just you know, love struck zombie walking paying attention
- 38:01Speaker 1: half the time. But those does always are always on alert. Yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 1: I think that's one of the sort of unspoken real
- 38:09Speaker 1: challenges of being a public land hunter primarily is you know,
- 38:13Speaker 1: if you if you get on really badass private land,
- 38:16Speaker 1: A lot of those does get a lot of passes,
- 38:18Speaker 1: like they you know, just like the Bucks do, right,
- 38:20Speaker 1: But you get on public land and those deer, even
- 38:24Speaker 1: if they're coming into a bait pil and they weren't
- 38:25Speaker 1: going to get shot by this guy, the next bait pile,
- 38:28Speaker 1: somebody's going to shoot at them, and they spend their
- 38:30Speaker 1: whole life on a hit list or everybody's hit list,
- 38:34Speaker 1: and that cumulative pressure is real and you you have
- 38:38Speaker 1: to beat them if you're going to get a buck.
- 38:40Speaker 1: And it's not it's like we kind of it's sort
- 38:43Speaker 1: of like a throwaway thing we don't really give enough
- 38:44Speaker 1: credit to. But it's a big problem for a lot
- 38:47Speaker 1: of people. Yeah, it's a I could don't open a
- 38:50Speaker 1: night this year, and I was like, man, this is
- 38:51Speaker 1: a year. And I didn't see until like in of October,
- 38:55Speaker 1: like September. I was just getting just gut punched by
- 38:58Speaker 1: the deer. Like I wasn't seeing no bucks, Like I
- 39:00Speaker 1: got a buck tag for the first time in years,
- 39:02Speaker 1: and nope, it was like a ghost out. Man. I
- 39:04Speaker 1: was like, and I really wasn't even seeing the doze
- 39:07Speaker 1: and I was like, I just wanted to shoot something.
- 39:09Speaker 1: It was a it was a very difficult season and
- 39:13Speaker 1: all that scouting I did, like the year prior, the
- 39:16Speaker 1: last couple of years, and somebody spots. It was like
- 39:18Speaker 1: I never even scouted. Simon was not there, the robs
- 39:21Speaker 1: weren't there, the deer weren't there. And I'm kind of
- 39:24Speaker 1: curious now because I saw have cameras out that I
- 39:26Speaker 1: sat in like September and somebody spots, like I just
- 39:29Speaker 1: want to go see if it turned my holl on,
- 39:32Speaker 1: you know, Like our season just started thirty first January,
- 39:36Speaker 1: so I'm just starting to start start my scouting stuff now,
- 39:40Speaker 1: so I'm kind of curious see whether this deer went
- 39:42Speaker 1: and maybe it's food oaks, different crops, it could be
- 39:46Speaker 1: pressure bait piles. I need to figure it out because
- 39:50Speaker 1: like I worked on my entry and exits, I did
- 39:52Speaker 1: all this everything that you're supposed to do, and it
- 39:54Speaker 1: was like, there's not here, and you feel kind of
- 39:57Speaker 1: defeated because you like, this is the year everything's going
- 40:00Speaker 1: to happen, and like nothing. So it's like I like
- 40:04Speaker 1: that because it's like I got my butt kicked, and
- 40:06Speaker 1: I love that. I love having that like front of
- 40:10Speaker 1: my face every time I go out, come out, I'm
- 40:11Speaker 1: not seeing at the air and I'm like, all right,
- 40:14Speaker 1: all right, what is your plan then? Though, So you
- 40:16Speaker 1: come off a season because I think there's a really
- 40:18Speaker 1: good lesson there and a lot of people I'm talking
- 40:22Speaker 1: to they're like, man, I got my ass kicked last year,
- 40:25Speaker 1: Like I you know, just it just happens. But so
- 40:28Speaker 1: you've had cameras out there soaking, so you'll get a
- 40:30Speaker 1: pretty good glimpse into what was happening through those. It's
- 40:34Speaker 1: not going to answer all your questions. What's your like
- 40:37Speaker 1: winter scouting strategy to go, Okay next year? This isn't
- 40:41Speaker 1: happening to me. I'm gonna be on them more. What
- 40:44Speaker 1: are you what are you looking at? I'm looking for
- 40:47Speaker 1: because I said the rub lines, and you know, those
- 40:50Speaker 1: rubbing areas of staging errors weren't there, so they got
- 40:53Speaker 1: to be somewhere else, you know, and I need to
- 40:56Speaker 1: figure out like where they went. And I do believe
- 40:58Speaker 1: it's going to be it's it's likely food or pressure.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I gotta figure out maybe somebody's coming in from private
- 41:04Speaker 1: because some of the spots it's like you got one
- 41:06Speaker 1: trawl head the anybody to get to somebody spots like
- 41:08Speaker 1: you gotta park here, there's no other way around it.
- 41:11Speaker 1: So maybe somebody's coming in by four wheeler, you know,
- 41:13Speaker 1: e bikes. Like I need to figure out what change
- 41:17Speaker 1: from these last couple of years. So for me, it's
- 41:19Speaker 1: trying to go back to the drawing board and having
- 41:21Speaker 1: like a clean slate, like all right, there's nothing here.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I have grid services. During hunting season, I didn't find anything.
- 41:27Speaker 1: So now I'm gonna go here and just like quadrant
- 41:30Speaker 1: scout it, you know, because I got kids, wife, so
- 41:34Speaker 1: I have a little four hour blocks on the weekend,
- 41:36Speaker 1: so I like to just I'm gonna scout this five
- 41:40Speaker 1: piece I my blank get up into four blocks, you know,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and then for you know, Saturday, Sunday two weeks in
- 41:45Speaker 1: a row. I'm gonna scout these, you know, up and down,
- 41:48Speaker 1: up and down, zig zag them and really hopefully either
- 41:53Speaker 1: write that place off or see what I need to see.
- 41:56Speaker 1: And usually it said it's pressure and food. Could be
- 42:00Speaker 1: somebody with a ladder stand and they could be bait
- 42:02Speaker 1: and all summer you know, who knows. I have to
- 42:05Speaker 1: go find out why it happened. When when you break
- 42:08Speaker 1: a property up like that and you talk about winner
- 42:11Speaker 1: scouting it, you know, we talk all the time about
- 42:14Speaker 1: looking for rubs. You know, if you don't have any snow,
- 42:15Speaker 1: you can look for last season scrapes, trails, whatever the usual.
- 42:19Speaker 1: But it sounds like you're looking for a lot of
- 42:21Speaker 1: human signed too, and that's like for me, I know,
- 42:24Speaker 1: that's like half the battle on public. I'm like, where
- 42:28Speaker 1: are the stands? Where are the piles of garbage? Like?
- 42:30Speaker 1: Where are the tack trails? Is that what you're looking
- 42:32Speaker 1: for too? Yes, exactly. I'll go out at night too,
- 42:35Speaker 1: Like I'll get out of Udeo and it's super early,
- 42:37Speaker 1: when it's still dark out and look for eyeshine because
- 42:40Speaker 1: I know, you know you can go to you know,
- 42:42Speaker 1: see eyeshine. Every eyeshine I see, I go up and
- 42:44Speaker 1: look at it. If it's an old tat rusty tag,
- 42:47Speaker 1: if it's the new triangle shape one or whatever square was.
- 42:50Speaker 1: And I know in certain areas there's never been eyeshine.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I'm like, well that's new. I need to see where
- 42:55Speaker 1: that's going, you know, and like going in the daytime,
- 42:58Speaker 1: you don't know that. So I'll go in a night,
- 43:00Speaker 1: late night, early morning, two am if I can't sleep.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I was going to look for eyeshine, you know, near
- 43:05Speaker 1: the trailhead and stuff like that. I try to do
- 43:08Speaker 1: things that most people won't because we talked about earlier
- 43:11Speaker 1: there is no secrets out there, you know. So it's
- 43:13Speaker 1: like there is no secret you know, trailheads or canoe launches,
- 43:18Speaker 1: you know, or anything. Now there's ebikes, you know, canoes, kayaks.
- 43:24Speaker 1: So I just trying to go where people aren't because
- 43:27Speaker 1: if you're seeing people, you're not seeing big bucks, you know,
- 43:31Speaker 1: so you avoid the people. I find you'll start to
- 43:34Speaker 1: see more deer sign And to break it down a
- 43:38Speaker 1: little bit further, is rub size. If I'm finding a
- 43:42Speaker 1: bunch of saplings rubs all over place, you know, like
- 43:44Speaker 1: little rubs, you know, it's a little dinker. If there's
- 43:47Speaker 1: a bunch of them. There's probably a doge group with
- 43:49Speaker 1: you know. Uh, it's her first year, you know, so
- 43:52Speaker 1: she might be trailed around. So I'm looking for bigger,
- 43:55Speaker 1: dear sign, taller rubs away from people, away from human sign,
- 44:00Speaker 1: do you So you don't give a whole lot of
- 44:02Speaker 1: like credence to small rubs on average, now, um, but
- 44:08Speaker 1: sometimes they will if it's a rub line, yes, But
- 44:11Speaker 1: if it's like just you know, oaks, you see where
- 44:14Speaker 1: there's like rubs and scrapes all over the place, usually
- 44:16Speaker 1: as young deer doing that, you know, I'm looking for
- 44:18Speaker 1: that isolated big old scrapes or I just need one
- 44:22Speaker 1: big hammer rub to get me excited, you know, like
- 44:25Speaker 1: I see one good tall room and by hammer I
- 44:27Speaker 1: mean not necessarily diameter, but height. You know, I want
- 44:30Speaker 1: to I want to see time marks up in my
- 44:32Speaker 1: chest that all right, there's a wider deer here, or
- 44:36Speaker 1: deer with longer times, you know, because if I'm seeing
- 44:39Speaker 1: rubs that are like a foot off the ground and
- 44:43Speaker 1: you know I'm I doesn't necessarily get me excited. Yeah,
- 44:46Speaker 1: unless it's a trail like a rub line, like I'll
- 44:50Speaker 1: follow them. But I love rub lines because you can
- 44:52Speaker 1: find some hidden gems, you know, especially big woods, you
- 44:55Speaker 1: find it a long time, like it's hard to follow
- 44:58Speaker 1: rub line. If you can mark it now on your
- 45:00Speaker 1: you're whatever software using, you know, and you can kind
- 45:03Speaker 1: of see how this year moving through different types of terrain.
- 45:05Speaker 1: You know, you go back to Google Earth and you
- 45:07Speaker 1: look at the time of year, like, oh, he's following this.
- 45:09Speaker 1: You know, this this soft edge in the mature hardwoods
- 45:13Speaker 1: there you don't necessarily see unless you were actually walking
- 45:16Speaker 1: that scene rub line that the deer was. Yep. I mean,
- 45:19Speaker 1: I think that's one of the you know, I've talked
- 45:22Speaker 1: about this a lot, like I'm not a big bed guy, Like,
- 45:25Speaker 1: I mean, I like them whatever, but I don't I
- 45:27Speaker 1: don't build a strategy around finding individual beds very often.
- 45:31Speaker 1: But man, my favorite winter scouting is in big woods stuff.
- 45:36Speaker 1: And if I find that like knob or something where
- 45:38Speaker 1: there's a there's like a big buck bed on there,
- 45:40Speaker 1: it's like you're gonna stand there and spend three sixteen
- 45:44Speaker 1: You're gonna see a rub line going down here to
- 45:46Speaker 1: the creek bottom and a rub line go and it's
- 45:48Speaker 1: like he's it's like you're talking about with those eyeshines
- 45:50Speaker 1: somebody leaves tack trail out there, It's like, Okay, I
- 45:53Speaker 1: know exactly where you started, exactly where you ended when
- 45:56Speaker 1: you walk into an out of the woods when you stand,
- 45:59Speaker 1: when you find those situations and you can read that
- 46:01Speaker 1: rub line, You're like that information so valuable. Yeah. And
- 46:08Speaker 1: I'm primarily a bed guy, especially like October. Like I
- 46:11Speaker 1: have a lot of success hunting a singular bed, but
- 46:14Speaker 1: it's always the nine percent of time it's the rubs
- 46:17Speaker 1: that lead me to that bed. And He's like, hold
- 46:20Speaker 1: on a second. So when your winner scouting, you'll find
- 46:23Speaker 1: rub concentrations and you'll tie that into finding a bed
- 46:26Speaker 1: to hunt in October. Yeah, if I find like a
- 46:29Speaker 1: rub line, like you know, you want to see you
- 46:32Speaker 1: kind of where like may pull up on a map,
- 46:34Speaker 1: like where's it going? Like maybe there's just thick it
- 46:36Speaker 1: over there, you know. I find a lot of beds,
- 46:39Speaker 1: believe or not, by accident by following deer trails like
- 46:42Speaker 1: a walter. I'm like, man, there's ruling nothing here. You
- 46:44Speaker 1: look down understanding a giant, well worn bed right end
- 46:47Speaker 1: up here. I don't know how I got there, but
- 46:49Speaker 1: you're just all the train and the you know, the vegetation,
- 46:53Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, look there's a buck bed, you know,
- 46:56Speaker 1: and then you sit there look around like you said, oh,
- 46:58Speaker 1: there's a rub or you know, there's you know, some
- 47:01Speaker 1: bucks signed over there or a big track or something.
- 47:04Speaker 1: So I rubs and beds. I'm not a big food guy. Um,
- 47:10Speaker 1: you know, I don't have myself hunting specific food. I'm
- 47:14Speaker 1: trying to get good at deciphering food and different types
- 47:17Speaker 1: of bark, but my brain canney handle so much information.
- 47:22Speaker 1: You know. Do you think that partially your strategy, you know,
- 47:26Speaker 1: of of paying attention to rubs big time and then
- 47:30Speaker 1: hunting beds is just built around the fact that you're
- 47:33Speaker 1: you're in a state where man, when everybody can bait
- 47:37Speaker 1: a food pattern isn't the same thing. You're not. You're
- 47:41Speaker 1: not dealing with us the same kind of food situation
- 47:44Speaker 1: that you would be in a state without bait. Yeah,
- 47:47Speaker 1: it's the first week or two, you might get some
- 47:50Speaker 1: beans bucks coming out their beans, But I'm never rarely
- 47:53Speaker 1: on the field. It's like it's probably a hundred yards.
- 47:56Speaker 1: It's probably the closest I'll get to a field edge
- 47:58Speaker 1: the first two weeks, and even that's a that's a
- 48:02Speaker 1: tough sell sometimes, you know, um, but yeah, the food
- 48:06Speaker 1: being food everywhere prevalent, and so I kind of just
- 48:10Speaker 1: adapted to like the bed hunting because a big buck
- 48:13Speaker 1: he'll get up out of his bed and he won't
- 48:16Speaker 1: move very far, like I've seen, like I've I've set
- 48:18Speaker 1: up on beds. I've watched the bucket up middle around
- 48:21Speaker 1: in his bed, take a few steps, and you're talking
- 48:23Speaker 1: forty there's forty five minutes of light left. He don't move,
- 48:27Speaker 1: he doesn't move, so dark. And then it's like, now
- 48:30Speaker 1: I'm stuck in this tree because there's like one troll
- 48:32Speaker 1: out of this like he's come by direction, and I'm like, oh,
- 48:35Speaker 1: this is great. I'm gonna be here getting bit up
- 48:36Speaker 1: by bugs, you know, because it's like it's hot, you know,
- 48:40Speaker 1: and it's like and you're losing that game, you know
- 48:43Speaker 1: if you will, because he's gonna smell you. You're in
- 48:46Speaker 1: you're in his comfort zone. Well, that spot's going, So
- 48:50Speaker 1: I have no problem going to the next. Like I
- 48:51Speaker 1: do a lot of scouting. I have a lot of spots,
- 48:54Speaker 1: you know, so it's like one spot blows out, I'm
- 48:55Speaker 1: like he's out. I'll go somewhere else is that a
- 48:59Speaker 1: function of being a public land hunter, because I know,
- 49:02Speaker 1: I mean, my whole thing about winner scouting is just
- 49:06Speaker 1: to give myself options because I know that even if
- 49:10Speaker 1: I'm perfectly careful on a little setup that I really like,
- 49:14Speaker 1: it's maybe two sits and it's over, and so often
- 49:18Speaker 1: even before I get in there, it's done for whatever reason.
- 49:22Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what reason, it's gone. And it's like
- 49:25Speaker 1: you can't get married to any one thing because it's
- 49:28Speaker 1: so fleeting. Yes, it's a I don't have you know,
- 49:33Speaker 1: let's say eight. I'm kind of stubborn, but I don't
- 49:36Speaker 1: hold on the spots, you know, like I'm stubborn for areas,
- 49:39Speaker 1: but like a particular tree, nope, you know, if it's
- 49:42Speaker 1: not there, Like I said, one sit, usually i'm going,
- 49:47Speaker 1: especially like October, because I get I get really aggressive,
- 49:50Speaker 1: especially in the morning, like I'm going or usually like
- 49:52Speaker 1: come October, every one of my sits like I'm going
- 49:55Speaker 1: to kill, especially in the morning. I love mornings. So
- 49:59Speaker 1: a lot of my outing is devised, you know, to
- 50:02Speaker 1: capitalize on the October the law, I guess was what
- 50:05Speaker 1: they call it. So morning sits in October I have
- 50:08Speaker 1: the most success hunting in the morning. I see a
- 50:11Speaker 1: lot of big Bucks at seven thirty in the morning
- 50:15Speaker 1: when most people say they're they're they're in bed before dark,
- 50:19Speaker 1: not always, you know. So it's like it's a lot
- 50:22Speaker 1: of yeah, a lot of my scouting. I mean, all
- 50:25Speaker 1: these they are behind me there. There's only one that's
- 50:27Speaker 1: killed at night. They're all mornings, you know, from seven
- 50:30Speaker 1: to eight pm, you know, or seven to eight am.
- 50:33Speaker 1: So a lot of my scouting is for morning setups
- 50:35Speaker 1: in October and income November. It's just like, you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: it's a free for all. You'll find it dose you
- 50:40Speaker 1: find a box basically is your strategy. You know, find
- 50:57Speaker 1: find a place where a buck's bed and find an
- 50:59Speaker 1: individual bed and then figure out a way to get
- 51:02Speaker 1: in there and beat him back there in the morning
- 51:04Speaker 1: in October, yes, man, exactly, Nobody talks about that. And
- 51:09Speaker 1: so again I'm gonna I'm gonna go out on a
- 51:11Speaker 1: limb here. But I think I'm right. This is probably
- 51:13Speaker 1: a function of there's crazy, you know, a crazy amount
- 51:17Speaker 1: of hunter is in around Opener. Everybody's running their bait sites.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Everybody's excited, and then they go, this isn't that much fun.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna wait until Halloween to really get after it again.
- 51:26Speaker 1: And you have that two or three week window in
- 51:28Speaker 1: October on public land where even if your pressure is
- 51:32Speaker 1: fifty percent of what it is at peak, that's a
- 51:34Speaker 1: big difference. And then if you think, well now I'm
- 51:37Speaker 1: in a hunt of morning, Now you've dropped another thirty
- 51:40Speaker 1: percent of that pressure down, and it's like you can
- 51:42Speaker 1: hunt the deer for a couple of weeks. Yes, they
- 51:46Speaker 1: I don't say they get they get less edgy, but
- 51:48Speaker 1: I think they know, like said, the human pressure, because
- 51:52Speaker 1: they're born in the pressure. So if you come in
- 51:54Speaker 1: and you add pressure, stinkyo, whatever it might be. That
- 51:58Speaker 1: buck's not going to run the next gun. He's got
- 51:59Speaker 1: nowhere to go. He's just going to just avoid area
- 52:02Speaker 1: and make a slight change. He's not gonna go, you know,
- 52:05Speaker 1: three hundred yards orm all away. He's just gonna shift
- 52:08Speaker 1: his bedding or his route fifty sixty yards. Sometimes that's
- 52:11Speaker 1: just nuts. That's because sometimes he has he doesn't have
- 52:14Speaker 1: the space to go, and he's not gonna go walk
- 52:17Speaker 1: through open timber or a field edge. He's going to
- 52:20Speaker 1: go to the next available thick cover, which usually it's
- 52:23Speaker 1: fifty or sixty yards it's not very far. So he's
- 52:26Speaker 1: just he's adapting to the pressure. He's not like freaking
- 52:29Speaker 1: out about it because you know, it's life. It's business
- 52:31Speaker 1: usual for them, you know, And I think a lot
- 52:33Speaker 1: of people will get that mixed up. Like I bumped
- 52:37Speaker 1: the buck. He's gone. Now he's gone for a couple
- 52:39Speaker 1: of days. You know, he's going to alter things, especially
- 52:41Speaker 1: if he gets out of his bed like super clean,
- 52:44Speaker 1: you know, like his bed worth. He's not going to
- 52:46Speaker 1: bandon that, you know, like you're going to abandon like
- 52:50Speaker 1: something that saves your life basically now. So well, I
- 52:53Speaker 1: mean that's that's the way to look at it, right,
- 52:55Speaker 1: is it. When you get out there and you're scouting
- 52:57Speaker 1: right now, you're looking for those places where they're they're
- 53:00Speaker 1: showing you, I was here in this place gave me
- 53:02Speaker 1: some advantages. Yeah, you know, even if you stumble through there,
- 53:06Speaker 1: or a woodcock hunter goes through there or whatever, it's
- 53:08Speaker 1: not like they're going to abandon that completely that because
- 53:12Speaker 1: that place gives them advantages. And it's not like if
- 53:14Speaker 1: that buck gets killed, another one isn't going to figure
- 53:17Speaker 1: that out. And those those kind of situations are so important. Yes,
- 53:22Speaker 1: and thanks. We talked about the ground sent Walking ground
- 53:26Speaker 1: cent is different than like setting a tree stand up
- 53:28Speaker 1: and sitting or sitting on the ground sent like when
- 53:31Speaker 1: you're sitting there for long periods of time, like your
- 53:33Speaker 1: scent is just saturating everything. And a mature dough or
- 53:36Speaker 1: a mature buff like they know that, like this human
- 53:40Speaker 1: stopped here for a long time. But a walking trail,
- 53:42Speaker 1: you know, it's like it's just it's the sense there,
- 53:45Speaker 1: but it's not as perceived as a threat so much
- 53:49Speaker 1: like they know something up to back up a little bit,
- 53:51Speaker 1: but they don't get that big whiff of like oh
- 53:53Speaker 1: my god, those humans here. You know. It's just staking
- 53:56Speaker 1: enough for hours on end, or a guy that hunts
- 53:58Speaker 1: the same tree, you know, thirty times the season, you know, dude,
- 54:02Speaker 1: I remember a couple of six seven years ago, I
- 54:06Speaker 1: was hunting Wisconsin and I was hunting just this punk,
- 54:10Speaker 1: this chunk of public land, and I had gone in
- 54:12Speaker 1: and set up in this spot, and I actually saw
- 54:15Speaker 1: quite a few deer off and I didn't kill one,
- 54:18Speaker 1: pulled my set out. You know. Next day I was
- 54:20Speaker 1: going to go in where I saw saw these bucks chasing,
- 54:24Speaker 1: and it snowed that night, and I remember walking down
- 54:28Speaker 1: through there because it was off of this this little
- 54:30Speaker 1: two track. And then I walked by the tree that
- 54:33Speaker 1: I was in the day before, and there was all
- 54:35Speaker 1: these sets of deer tracks in the snow coming up
- 54:38Speaker 1: to it. There was anything left in there, but they're
- 54:41Speaker 1: just like somebody caught a whiff of it, checked it out,
- 54:43Speaker 1: and then you could just see, like after hours when
- 54:46Speaker 1: it was dark, they were like, Okay, some asshole was
- 54:48Speaker 1: in here. They're aware of this, And I think that's
- 54:52Speaker 1: going to happened, dude all the time. And then I've
- 54:56Speaker 1: told sort of a few times. I was hout in
- 54:57Speaker 1: the salt marsh and like bract of salt Marcearia, and
- 55:01Speaker 1: I had this big little buck come in. Two bucks
- 55:03Speaker 1: come in, and it's you know, earn a buck, so
- 55:07Speaker 1: you know how that goes, and he leaves him in
- 55:10Speaker 1: the seven point of leave and then kind of look
- 55:13Speaker 1: back from right here, it comes a smaller buck coming
- 55:15Speaker 1: right to the base of my tree. I mean he came,
- 55:17Speaker 1: he caught my ground, sent right up there. He came
- 55:19Speaker 1: right to my tree, and I'm looking at him. I'm like, man,
- 55:22Speaker 1: that big box around here somewhere. I'm looking all around,
- 55:25Speaker 1: looking all around. He's back in the shadows looking for
- 55:28Speaker 1: humans up in the tree, and he sees we make
- 55:31Speaker 1: eye contact and then he just backs right up in
- 55:33Speaker 1: the dark disappears. He sent that little buck to go
- 55:36Speaker 1: die basically because I beat him and he did not
- 55:39Speaker 1: want to. He wanted to know who beat him, where
- 55:42Speaker 1: he was and how they got there. And I was like, wow,
- 55:46Speaker 1: like how you're supposed to kill deer like that, like
- 55:49Speaker 1: when this dear was old, stiffly he walked with like arthritis,
- 55:51Speaker 1: You're like, he's seen some stuff, man, but that deer
- 55:54Speaker 1: I beat him, and he'll really set his best buddy
- 55:58Speaker 1: to die. Basically, well there you go, see where the
- 56:01Speaker 1: seior Dane's come from, and he's looking up the trees.
- 56:03Speaker 1: So I'm like that is just unreal, Like how is
- 56:06Speaker 1: that even possible for a prey animal. So he evolved
- 56:10Speaker 1: to that, you know, that level where he wants to
- 56:14Speaker 1: know what beat him, and he wants to see him
- 56:16Speaker 1: in the tree, like he needs to validate that ground
- 56:18Speaker 1: sent like and now you know, like he probably you
- 56:21Speaker 1: went and hiding that you know, probably became because strictly
- 56:23Speaker 1: nocturnal at that point. You know, dude, I think there's
- 56:26Speaker 1: such a good lesson there. And I know people will
- 56:28Speaker 1: listen to that and say that's b s. There's no
- 56:31Speaker 1: way they can communicate that way. Listen, man, I think
- 56:34Speaker 1: the way that they're in tune to each other, we
- 56:37Speaker 1: can't even understand it. I don't have you ever had
- 56:39Speaker 1: a meal there before? No, Man, if you hunt like
- 56:44Speaker 1: high country meal deer where you know, like your typical
- 56:47Speaker 1: like late August Colorado hunt, where you're glassing up the
- 56:50Speaker 1: big velvet bucks, you'll see those deer. They'll be like
- 56:54Speaker 1: a one seventy and you know, three or four smaller
- 56:57Speaker 1: bucks right, and you know they're bachelored up there in
- 57:00Speaker 1: the high country. Those suckers will bed down and that
- 57:03Speaker 1: big buck will be in the best spot guaranteed. And
- 57:06Speaker 1: then there'll be this little century buck here on this
- 57:09Speaker 1: point and this one here, and you start reading it
- 57:11Speaker 1: and you go, you know, they didn't probably like plan that,
- 57:16Speaker 1: Like they're not saying, okay, you bed here, you bed here.
- 57:18Speaker 1: It just like nature shakes out that way, and it's
- 57:20Speaker 1: like this, this little dude's got this corner, This little
- 57:23Speaker 1: dude's got this corner, this dude's above, and it's like
- 57:26Speaker 1: whether it's like intentional or totally just like a survival accident.
- 57:31Speaker 1: They're unapproachable and you go like, that's it doesn't matter
- 57:34Speaker 1: whether they did it on purpose, because they beat you already.
- 57:36Speaker 1: And I just I think that stuff's incredible. Well, let's
- 57:39Speaker 1: see what you see it with do betting. When you find,
- 57:42Speaker 1: like dough betting, they bed a group of does you know,
- 57:46Speaker 1: especially in the marsh, you know, you in the salt marsh,
- 57:48Speaker 1: you'll see they bed down in the reads. It's one
- 57:51Speaker 1: point in this direction, one's going this way, one's going
- 57:53Speaker 1: this way. They're covered a full three sixty and it's
- 57:56Speaker 1: like it's ridiculous almost like you know, like a when
- 58:00Speaker 1: geese land in the field, you have the feeders and
- 58:02Speaker 1: you have the centuries. There's always somebody watching, and I
- 58:07Speaker 1: think you like, early season, it could be tough, you know,
- 58:09Speaker 1: because bucks are grouped up, but you hit that beginning
- 58:12Speaker 1: of October, then bucks start to separate, you know, and
- 58:14Speaker 1: that's when that big one goes off on his own.
- 58:17Speaker 1: And I find it's easier to kill a buck, a
- 58:20Speaker 1: single deer, because he just has two eyes and two
- 58:23Speaker 1: ears and two noses. You don't have four bucks behind him.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Everybody knows stents going everywhere, so it's like or a
- 58:29Speaker 1: group of dose bet and so a singular buck in October.
- 58:33Speaker 1: He's going from point A to point B. So you
- 58:36Speaker 1: find out where he's feeding, find out where he's betting.
- 58:38Speaker 1: You know, it doesn't always work out that way, but
- 58:41Speaker 1: he's walking, he's taking his time. Shots are readily available
- 58:46Speaker 1: because he's a no hurry to get back to the bed,
- 58:48Speaker 1: you know, back to that seven thirty, he's still meandering
- 58:51Speaker 1: back to his bed, like it's a good time to
- 58:54Speaker 1: be in the woods. If you understand, I think, you know,
- 58:57Speaker 1: if you're scouting, helps you, you know, break down these
- 59:00Speaker 1: these areas where they're finding where they're betting, and you know,
- 59:02Speaker 1: getting close, like I get super aggressive, you know, and
- 59:05Speaker 1: it's like it's not for everybody. I don't recommend that.
- 59:07Speaker 1: There's a lot of times I get busted, you know,
- 59:10Speaker 1: when it's dark out and it's like, well all this
- 59:13Speaker 1: work for nothing, But it's like, well it worked, he
- 59:15Speaker 1: was here, so it's like it's a win. It's just
- 59:18Speaker 1: an hour and a half too late, too soon. Yep. Well,
- 59:21Speaker 1: I think what you're talking about there is an interesting
- 59:23Speaker 1: point because I feel the same way when I love
- 59:29Speaker 1: the October low like I love middle of October when
- 59:32Speaker 1: when people say you shouldn't be out there, because I
- 59:34Speaker 1: think you get a point where those Bucks, like you said,
- 59:37Speaker 1: they're they're not hanging out together generally, and they get confident,
- 59:42Speaker 1: like it's almost like they're overconfident about their safety if
- 59:45Speaker 1: they're in a really good spot. You don't see that
- 59:47Speaker 1: with dose. Those are always kind of neurotic and like
- 59:50Speaker 1: they're worried about keeping the little ones alive. But you
- 59:53Speaker 1: see Bucks and it's like a it's a weakness I
- 59:55Speaker 1: think you can exploit because yes, you know, like you said,
- 59:58Speaker 1: you watch that buck bed down and it's like, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: you're ticking down to the last couple of minutes of
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: shooting light, and you know, sometimes they get up. Sometimes
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: they don't, but a lot of times they do, and
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: it's just like they're just so confident they're safe there
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: that they'll get up and go make a rub and
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: start working their way down the trail. And yeah, they
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: won't be to the field for until it's a half
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: hour after dark, but they moved enough for you to
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: kill them. And they just act like they're just king shit,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: like they don't have the same kind of danger and
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that that's when they kill them. Yeah, and that's it
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: scares a lot of people because it's you know, being
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a you know, hunting a particular buck. Anybody's on a
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: particular buck for mature dear. In general, we don't have
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: a lot of mature deer in New Jersey. So there
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: might only be one four year old someone a piece
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: of money in a bunch of two and a half
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: year olds. You know, if you do all this work
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: and I've had good access, good entry, you know, good everything,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Everything was good, you know, and daybreak comes, you know,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: here comes a spike on the net bed and it's like,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: well all right, you know, like all bulls are using
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: this bad which is good, you know, like my fault
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: process guy in that peace, like all right, this is
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: a good spot for a buff to bed, Like it's
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: didn't work out for me that time, you know, And
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: that scares a lot of people. Getting that aggressive, you're
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: gonna chars. You don't scare them away, thank going anywhere
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: they got nowhere to go, like where they're going, hop
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: on a plane and go somewhere else. I mean that
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: that I think we're in a weird place with that
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: kind of mentality right now though, because you know, the
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: hunting industry in general sold us this idea that you
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: should be super cautious because that was coming from people
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: who could afford to wait, they didn't have they didn't
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: have any you know, like didn't do him any good
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: to go in on October tenth when nobody was going
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: to hunt their deer at all. So like, yeah, if
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: you're preaching that message like well, you shouldn't go in,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: it's like, well, you shouldn't go in because you don't
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: have to. But if you're hunting a place that's got
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: a lot of pressure, like and you've scouted a lot,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: like you might as well strike now. And if you
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: don't make it happen, I mean, that's why you win
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: or scout. Now. It's so like when you do blow
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: it up, you just move on to Plan B or
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: C or D or whatever. Yeah, Like I've tagged out
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: like the first move of October and like, well shit,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: uh what do I do now? It's like, well, Delaware
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: or Pennsylvania here I come, you know, because I can't
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: get another buck tag till you know, the end of October.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: You know. But it's like it's cool to tag out early.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: But at the same time we're like it's over, Like
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I don't want to for you over, Like I want
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: to struggle a little bit more, you know. And so
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: it's like it's a it's a rewarding part of hunting,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you know. And I've I think it was Andre or
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: or maybe Dan that talked about it's not being you know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: you're not being careless or aggressive. You know, you're being
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: calculated and you're set up. You're not just like throwing
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: your cautions to wind, like you know where he's betted
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: and you're gonna come in, you know, and the wind's
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: gonna be perfect for him, awful for you. You're like,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: you're you're, you're that razor's edge and you're going like,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: but it's not aggressive, it's just it's very You're it's
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: very tactical and very thought out because that's the only
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: time you're gonna get a chance to that dear, you know,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: because it's you know, once October Halloween hits that bus,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you know, berserker moode running here or there everywhere. So
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I love that October. I love scouting for October, you know,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And like I think most of my winner scouting is
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: for those October moments, and it's just like when you're
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: focusing on rubs when you're winner scouting. Now, I mean,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: I think there's a I think there's sort of a
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: misconception if you go and just find a place, like
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: you were talking about, this is just ripped up, and
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: you're like, man, they were here, this wasn't just one buck,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: this was and they're good ones. I think people go out,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you know, in February, March whatever, and they see that
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: and they go, man, I'm getting here on November third,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: and I'm sitting all day and I look at that,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and I go, why don't you get there on like
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: October twentieth, yes, and kill them. And it could be
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: because of that that wild card of when the ruts,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: you know, even really the pre ruts like kicking in
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: that concentration assign might not really matter that much that
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: you've found in March. That's funny you said October twentieth,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: That is my day. I've killed five or six bucks
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: in October twentieth, and that is the troll camera data
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: in my visious like that is the day to be
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: in the woods eighteen to twenty. First, it's a lot
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: of day walk and a lot of big bucks are
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: on their feet. Maybe they're just checking the scene out,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: see where the food is, the does are, the human
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: pressure is, and they go back and hiding. Maybe they
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: get lucky find the hot dough, you know. But I
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: think they get up and that urge to breathe and
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: they know what's going on. They had They can't be
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: super secretive, you know, they have to, you know, because
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: I think older bucks want to breathe one one or
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: two times, maybe three times, and they're good. That's enough
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: for them because they've been through enough seasons where it's survival.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: You know, they've been shot it, they've been hit, maybe wounded.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: They're not going to run, you know, like a two
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: year old all over the wood chasing one or two
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: and some of these boxes want to retreat back to
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: safety security, you know. I I think that that's like,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I think that's a really good thing to acknowledge because
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: when you look at how often we kind of talk
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: about this stuff, I think people don't associate. They just think, Okay,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna winter scout and it's going to be it's
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: just a general plus the general benefit for me in
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: the fall, It's like I don't know. I mean, finding
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: rubs a concentration of rubs right now in the woods
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: probably doesn't do you that much good on opening night
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: next year. Maybe not for the first opening week because
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: of all the people who might be out there or whatever.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: But when those deer get into that, like, Okay, I
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: know I'm getting hunted. I know I still want to
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: do my thing, but like you're talking with those bucks,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be running all over the place. I'm
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: not showing myself in daylight out in the fields. That's
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: the connection here, Like there's like a March to October
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: connection that's like so beneficial. And I think people kind
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: of just like they don't understand that it's not just
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a general seasonal benefit. It's just like maybe maybe three weeks,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: maybe four weeks, but it's real important. Yeah, And and
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: scout with the purpose. You know, if you if your
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: vacation is November, you go in to Iowa, you know,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and if you get a chance to scout II or whatever,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: it's like I'm gonna take a week off in November.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Rubs should not be on your list. You should be
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: mark them. It's cool you found them, but you should
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: be focused on is those rubs and your dough betting,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: you know, and vice versus. So I like said, I
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: purposely most of my scouting is for October, you know.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I it's just you know, and I think the reason
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: for that. When I first started hunting, you had to
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: apply for a permit to hunt in November, Well you
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: weren't guaranteed a permit. Well, I think my first two
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: or three seasons I didn't get in November. My dad did,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: so I just had October and I had to wait
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: till gun season a week in December, and then nothing
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: until January. So it kind of there are a few
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: years not pulling tags, you know, getting a permit, you got,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I got four weeks to kill something. So it's like
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: you're getting that mode where it's like this is it.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: I have to make these three or four weeks count,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and it's just like it's just kind of compounded through
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: years over that, you know, and then as you get older,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: jobs like I couldn't know vacation time, so it's like, well,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: come November, it's dark by time we go for work,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: but not in October. So it's like I kind of
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: just did the October thing because that's what I had.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: So it's like I'm the worst rut hunter anybody to
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: tell you. Thought to Clint Johnny go like I've already
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: killed maybe what three bucks in November, maybe four. I'm
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: October guy, So it's like scout for October. I'm the
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: same way. I mean, I've killed some bucks in November,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: but I'm way way more successful in September and October.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: And I mean I should say this. You know, if
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: you if you get out there scouting right now, it's
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: not like there isn't a rut benefit to it. I
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: mean you might find a pinch point or a fence
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: crossing or something like a river crossing whatever. You might
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: find a train trap where you're like, yep, this is
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: a November seventh spot, but like you got to know
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: what you're looking at, right, Like that concentration of rubs
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: might not be the November seventh spot. Understanding that and understand.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: But again, two more miles you put on and you
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: find that stuff. The more you have those options as
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: your season rests, and it's it's such an advantage. And
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I remember, either you're reading or hearing like Andy may
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: talk about that those rubs, and those rubs pop up
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: there as a certain time of year. You know, these
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: rubs gonna get hot, you know, and if you have
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: a quick access you can check out him like that
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: bucks in there for only three or four days, you know,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: and that's when those rubs are kind of they're hopping off.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: So you need to be there when it happens. Maybe
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it's the twentieth of October, you know, maybe it's the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: twenty sixth of October. You know, but you have to
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: get out and check those big rub spots and be
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: ready to hunt when you're out there, because sometimes you
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: can't see it from the road, like you got to
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: be in there so they are right, I'm gonna go
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: hunt this and hopefully they're there. If not, there are
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: given a three day come back in three days, you know,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: and you try to play that. You know that three
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: day I do believe three day windows is key because
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: that box will be here for a few days and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: he's gone for a few days and come back for
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: a few days and there's on a cycle, you know,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: like hunting the Big Wood Mountain books. This is a
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: constant cycle here in Jersey is to say, smaller cycle
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: because they don't have the ability to roam as far yep.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I mean I think you know when you when you
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: talk about Andy and he's talking about that, like you
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: got that window there, you know it might be a
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: couple of days here, or you know you're talking about
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: hunting in mid October when other people aren't. I think,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: like maybe the most important lesson there from guys like
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: you and Andy is you you have to go out
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: and learn when your stuff's gonna be good or when
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: when it could potentially be good. Like if you're if
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: you're listening to a whole bunch of people in the
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: hunting industry and they're telling you you gotta do this,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: you gotta do that, and this is the best time
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: there's there might be some good stuff in there right
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Like there might be, but like your specific spot and
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: all of these little variables a factor in there, Like okay,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: well you're in Jersey, there's a you know, people can
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: shoot five bucks, people can bait, people can do this,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: people can do that, people can cross bo hunt. It's like, okay,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: you filter all that stuff down to there. Now, what
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: do you have to do to be successful? Got to
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: scout a lot. You gotta find new spots a lot,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Like you got to you gotta put in the work,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: and you could follow all the advice from a bunch
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: of hunting industry people and it wouldn't do any good
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: because your situation does not mirror there's in any way.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: And you know, like I had a conversation this morning,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Janis and I are both applying to Iowa together. He
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: wants to come out and hunt Iowa and we have
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: enough points to maybe draw, and he's like, well, we
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: got to do this in November, right, And I was like,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: I'm going in October. And he's like, well, that's the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: best option for me travel wise, But he's like like,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: how do you think it's gonna be. I'm like, it's
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: gonna be freaking amazing, Like, yeah, we're gonna We're gonna
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: be all over deer, and we're gonna be there before
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: because we're gonna be hunting public land if we draw.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: And I'm like, even though it's Iowa, I know on
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: November one, there'll be the most people in the woods
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: that there will be all season long, for the next
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: fourteen days. I want to get in there ahead of that.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: When those bucks are starting to move a little bit
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and they're laying down sign and everybody else is like
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: I'm waiting two more weeks or a week and a
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: half to kill them. I can't freaking wait. Yeah, that's
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: a he said. You gotta know you're like your strengths,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: you know, like some people are better November hunters, like
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I don't. I can see those like I don't hunt dose.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: So it's like come November, like I have a hard
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: time shifting to dough mode because September October it's like,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: especially October it's bucks only. Like I always say, if
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: you're seeing four or five pointers, six pointers, you ain't
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: seeing the big Buck because he's completely separate from all those.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: If you're seeing a bunch of doze in October, it's
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: already not seeing a Buck. So it's like I getting
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: so buck mode, and then like the ruck comes, It's
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: like I can't turn it off. It's a very hard switch.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: And it's like these last couple of years, I've gotten
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: better at it, but I had those a ten year
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: stretch anything. I drew my bow back in November and
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: it was like because I was strictly like so buck obsessed,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: like I forgot It's like, oh, it's the run and
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: all my butters are drunk, hungover, or just driving down
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: the road and see a buck chase and Devin go
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: kill it. I'm getting up early, I'm taking canoe with
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: or you know, or taking a long way around and
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: just getting my buck kicked because I didn't know how
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: to how I understood how November worked, but I couldn't
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: get out of my own way with it, so fixated
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: on sure bump beds and rubs. And it's like, so
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: you need to know how your brain works and use
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: that to your advantage, Like, don't necessarily play of your
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: your weaknesses, Like if you're November guy, to go all
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: in November man, like you get it. If you're September guy,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: got the food sources, go all in play of your
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: strengths when when you're scouting. But I do think, you know,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: because I'm not you know, I haven't talked about this
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: a ton, but you know, I live in Minnesota. Our
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: our gun season starts the first Saturday in November everyear,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: so I think this year it's like November fourth or fifth,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: So you know, you got half a million gun hunters
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: out there and the ruts just barely cranking. And so
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I was always September in October because by you know,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I never had a rut hunt to count on and
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: I found you know, people say, well, hunt the doe
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: betting areas, hunt down windo those but dobetting areas whatever
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: for me to get over that rut hump, because like
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: people like, oh, it's it's the best time. It's like
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: always going to be the best, and then you go
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: and actually hunt it, and a lot of times it
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: really sucks, especially on public land. It's like not nearly
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: as good as it's supposed to be. I think it's
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: a matter of being like good enough scouting to find
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: some train traps you believe in, and then having the
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: willingness to be bored off your ass and disappointed and
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: sit them and at least give every you know, give
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: a couple of them real dark to dark sits if
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: the wind is working for you. And just because I've
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: noticed this, like some of the bigger bucks I've killed
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: in the rut, they might be like the only deer
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: I see that day, or I might see like two
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: deer or three deer, but the right one comes along.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: But you might have eight hours where you don't see
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: a deer or two days. Yeah, and it's that's tough, man.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I firm believe in that. When I see a lot
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: of deer in November daybreak up, I've seen a bunch
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: of doze. It's always little bucks behind and then come eleven,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: between eleven and two, there'll be a singular box that
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: rolls through. Like very rarely, especially in November, I don't
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: have much luck seeing big bucks early in the morning.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: It's it's a it's a rarity, you know. It's unless
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: they're with a dough Like I don't get that chasing
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: or that, you know, that what everybody wants. I rarely
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: get that. I get that eleven to two, eleven to three,
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: that single buck coming through and nose to the ground,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: and it's a tough I mean I was at full
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: draw four times this year and no shots because it's thick,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: you know, it's like everything by scouting all that stuff words,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: but that buck was just moving too fast, too thick,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and I'm like, well, I got a bell, I don't
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: have a gun, you know. So it's like it's there
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: like twenty yards and under and they're walking because well
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I'm not shooting through, yo, It's take a bush out
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: of walking deer. Yeah, I've been down that road before.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: It doesn't it doesn't pay well. Not a good idea. Yeah,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I have the same experience with bucks at ten eleven twelve,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: like early in the afternoon, where you'll see the first
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: deer and he's cruising through and you're like, you know,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: it reminds me of a bow hunt turkeys a lot,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and you know, if you're out there early season. You
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: know here in minnesota'll be mid April when it opens,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: you know, Nebraska be early or whatever. But when you
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: get them like flocked up, they're all roosting together, they're
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: all feeding together. You know, yeah, you have a million gobbles,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: doesn't matter, you're not calling them away. And then like
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: ten o'clock eleven o'clock, they start cruising and you'll pick
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: that bird up, that two year old or three year old.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: It's like, I just I gotta go looking. It feels
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: exactly like a lot of rut hunts where you're like, yeah,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: there might have been a bunch of action right away,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: but like you said, a lot of times, it's not
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: that one forty. It's like scrappers and doughs. And then
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: you get that die off and then you're like, oh, man,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: like this I haven't seen anything in three hours, and
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: then all of a sudden you see them coming. You're like,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: there's something to it, Like they got they got sick
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: of the doughs they were with, or they gave up
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: on it, and now they're like, I gotta go find
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: I gotta go to that next concentration, and that's when
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you kill them. Yeah, it's I think you similarities between
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: fishing and hunting and turkey hunting and hunting different things.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: I think there is a common core, you know, a
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: thread between all of them. You know, like I hunt
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: I fished these fisher stripers a lot in Kate May,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: and you hunt the rips and you hunt points, and
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: these big fish are down low even though you had
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: a big tail and the super strong swimmers they're using,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: you know, the terrain to their advantage to you know,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: everything comes to them, you know. And then it's like
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: trout fishing. You watch a big trout sitting behind the rock.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: He's in that position, you know, because it's advantageous to
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: him to be in that position. I can eat easily.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: You know. It's like hunting turkeys and deer. It's like
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: it's very similar. If you're good at one. You can
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: be good at a lot of different forms of hunting
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: it or fishing. Dude, I talk about that. I write
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: about that all time. I don't know if anybody believes
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: me or not, but I think any time you spend
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: out there hunting and fishing, you're learning how to be
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: a better hunter or fisherman. Like I mean, the parallels there,
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I mean, the things that I learned about deer from
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: pheasant hunting public land are amazing. Like it's it's like
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: a weird little education every time you go, and it's
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: just because you're out there with them, and it's you know,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: it's just there's so many like I learned how to
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: hunt mountains and the terrain how deer you used terrain
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: from hunting fishing streams, small mouth streams and hunting big reservoirs,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: and the points where the big bass to hide and
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: they go up, you know, up and down, you know
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: these points. I learned how to hunt the mountains. I
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: learned how to hunt mountains and have success pretty quickly,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: you know. And I'm three hours away from the near
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: set of mountains. So it's like I went up there
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and I was like, it's just like fishing. You know
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: what it's like, there's the correlations is identical, and it's
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: like it's just mountain hunting clicked for me. It was
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: like I find it relatively easy, you know, because deer
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: can only travel so many ways in the mountains, you know.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: And I got that from fishing years of fishing. I
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: fished every day. So when you're fishing, you know, if
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: you're really a good fisherman, you're learning watch what water does,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: what insects do, like how pressure human pressure changes, fish
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: changes the bike. You know, when it's clear length, heavy pressure,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: fish go deep. There's heavy pressure. With deer or human
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: sport of deer you go, they usually go deep. There's
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: a lot of you know, a lot of similarities between
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: the two. Yeah. I was literally talking to my daughters
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: about this when we're having breakfast the other morning, and
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I don't remember how it came up, but you know,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: we fish all the freaking time. We love to fish
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Smally's and they like to hunt with me, and we
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: were talking about just like why we like doing stuff
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: in the outdoors, and I think it came up because
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: we were talking about training dogs. But anyway, I really
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: think one of the ways that that makes you like
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: if you if somebody's listening to this and they just
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: started deer hunting in they're like, there's no way if
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I fish smallis I'm going to get better at deer hunting.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: But you've got to think about what are you doing
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: when you're fishing smallies or you're trout fishing, you know,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: fly fish and trout. You're just solving a problem, right,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Like you're taking a set of conditions that were handed
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: to you. Okay, the water's high, it's this color, it's
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: May fifteenth. You know they should be on beds, but
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: maybe they're not or whatever. And you start breaking it down,
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: you go, okay, where should they be? You know, is
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: it a Saturday at two o'clock and they've already been
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: you know, thrown to five thousand times? Or is it
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: a Tuesday morning? Is it July and there's a cold front,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: or is it you know what I mean? Like you
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: start to factor in that stuff and it's like, okay,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: now you just you're you're literally reading the weather and
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: the quarry and the conditions and the pressure and everything,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: and you're going, okay, what's my best chance? How is
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: that any different than when you walk into public land?
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: You're like, I gotta kill a deer. Like, what are
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: you filtering through your brain right there? Okay, well it's cloudy,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: it's been cold for four days. It's Wednesday morning, it's
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: not Saturday night. Like there's you know what I mean.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: It's like I think that you just partially get better
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: because you're getting good at solving those problems. Yes, I agree,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I'd be one, and I think that's why. I don't know.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I just think there's a lot of benefits to get
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: out there and doing a bunch of different stuff. We
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: were about done here, buddy, I got to ask you,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: do you see I always wrestle with this because you know,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: they put together all this content on winter scouting, and
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: you know, shed hunting is a little different. A lot
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: of people seem to shed hunt. Now do you ever, like,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: do you run across people out there winter scouting? Like
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: if you hit a just ball park it? And I say, okay,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: take any ten bow hunters out in Jersey. What percentage
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: how many of those dudes winter scout? What would you say?
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I would say everyone will say they do, but I
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: rarely see people. And what do you think the real
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: number is? Out of ten? I would say me and
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: someone else so too, Yeah, I was gonna see I say, actually,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: like most people are pulling their trail cameras. That's where
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: they're scouting ends. They're pulling the cameras. Like I'm getting
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: habit of leaving cameras out, Like I don't really pull
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: some of my cameras like March because I want to see,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: like I'll go put new batteries and check for people.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: But I know it was like, oh, this this dude
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: is in here like four days a row. He either
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: found the bang or set of sheds. You're trying to
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: bring his deer out, or he's seen it baked deer
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: and he's trying to find the sheds. So I'm like, well,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: this dude's on something, So all right, maybe I need
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: to go in there and church a little bit more.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: You know. It's like maybe I didn't get that hear
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: my camera button. If you catch somebody going until spot
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: a bunch times, there's a reason they're in there, yep.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Do So you say maybe maybe twenty percent of the people,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't say maybe twenty percent too, Like I wouldn't
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: go much higher than that. I kind I kind of
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: look at it like all day sits. Everybody talks about it.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think that many hunters actually do
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: very many all day sits. All day sits a brutal
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: You know, I don't know if this is because I
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: have kids now or what. I actually don't mind them
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: that much. If it's not, if if the conditions aren't horrible. Yeah,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: but like what, so I want to wrap this up then,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: so you say we're we're in agreement here on twenty
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: percent of the people might win or scope. You know,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: some people are out there shed hunting, like you said,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: some people are out there looking for trail cameras. How
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: important is winner scouting to you to your fall success?
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: Like one, not important at all. Ten It's my favorite
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: thing because it always helps me kill big bucks. Ten yeah, ten,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: eleven and twelve one hundred. If everybody who's listening to this,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: maybe the most important thing we covered is just that
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: right there. Not very many people do this, and guys
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: who are absolute killers go out and this is the
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: time when they set the stage for those kills. Yes,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: I agree, majorly important. Thank you so much for coming on. Man,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: this has been a blast. I'm definitely gonna get you
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: on again. Oh sweet, I enjoyed it. Thanks Buddy later.
