- 0:21Speaker 2: This is rout Fresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It is officially white Taill Hot Week. Everybody is going wild,
- 0:28Speaker 2: including the big bucks. We have a big cold front
- 0:31Speaker 2: coming in this week across the country and everybody is stoked. However,
- 0:35Speaker 2: you still have to make the right moves. Let's figure
- 0:37Speaker 2: out what those are. This is Retfresh, Let's go.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Welcome to rut Fresh Radio, brought to you by first
- 0:50Speaker 3: Light Gear. I'm your host Tyler Jones, and I've got
- 0:53Speaker 3: another host here. His name is Casey Smith.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Finally, dude, I actually get to do some work for once.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Klein Joe has been holding it down the rough way
- 1:01Speaker 2: to go. It ain't that much work. It's not unless.
- 1:06Speaker 3: It's it's actually a lot of fun to get talk
- 1:09Speaker 3: to all these people, especially when you got you know,
- 1:12Speaker 3: guys like Jannis Ptellius on the phone with you. It
- 1:14Speaker 3: could just you know, tell you just stories that you
- 1:17Speaker 3: just key in on. Man. Somehow people like that can
- 1:20Speaker 3: just hold your attention so well, you know, and he's
- 1:23Speaker 3: been out there, you know, doing a bunch of stuff
- 1:25Speaker 3: up in the Upper Midwest. We've got guys from the
- 1:29Speaker 3: Midwest doing this. We got guys from the South this week,
- 1:32Speaker 3: but everybody is taking rut vacations to the Midwest, so
- 1:36Speaker 3: we wanted to have this week be a Midwest heavy episode.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Why still radiates out from the Midwest for sure, it
- 1:43Speaker 2: truly does.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I love Texas.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I mean, we have a rich hunting culture here for
- 1:48Speaker 2: white tail deer especially, but I mean Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri.
- 1:55Speaker 3: That's just what you think. And the beauty of those
- 1:58Speaker 3: states man is like you can go hunt, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 3: your your uncle's property. It's one hundred and sixty acres
- 2:04Speaker 3: or public peace and you stand a chance of like
- 2:07Speaker 3: a big, big deer showing up. But in Texas you
- 2:10Speaker 3: kind of got to have some money to have, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: most of the time, right, not all the time.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But you can feel great about a forty in hour.
- 2:16Speaker 2: You know, it's just a it's a different different and
- 2:19Speaker 2: that's why it's cool. It ain't we ain't being critical.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It is awesome, sure, and I hope we get to
- 2:24Speaker 2: hunt there next year. Yeah, but it seems as if
- 2:28Speaker 2: the cold front has pushed through. There's been some hot weather. Yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you made some choices bad according to hot weather, bad ones.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Tell me about those choices time. Why do I have
- 2:37Speaker 2: to tell everybody?
- 2:38Speaker 3: It is? There's like thousands of people that are going
- 2:41Speaker 3: to hear how dumb I am. No, no, no, So
- 2:44Speaker 3: you you came home from a winter wonderland, my goodness,
- 2:48Speaker 3: and with a nice buck and toe potentially man potentially,
- 2:53Speaker 3: And then you know, we were fixing to get ready
- 2:56Speaker 3: to go on our kind of vacation and uh, we're
- 2:59Speaker 3: trying to figure out what date and you're like, uh,
- 3:02Speaker 3: you know, I'm gonna spend a little bit time with
- 3:03Speaker 3: the family and then go out this day. And I
- 3:06Speaker 3: was like, I was gonna go a day before you. Well,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I looked for my my E tag, but I was
- 3:13Speaker 3: looking for the physical version of this E tag. It's
- 3:16Speaker 3: what the EMS. I looked for like an hour and
- 3:20Speaker 3: a half, dude, I was. I tore my entire house
- 3:23Speaker 3: apart just my truck. I cleaned my truck pretty much,
- 3:25Speaker 3: but I did and could not find the saying I
- 3:28Speaker 3: was eating dust. I'm highly allergic. So I'm just sitting
- 3:31Speaker 3: there just sneezing and throwing a fit, you know. And
- 3:34Speaker 3: uh then I realized and finally I was like, okay,
- 3:36Speaker 3: this is it an e tag. I've never done any
- 3:38Speaker 3: tag before, so I don't know. Maybe so anyway, yes,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I looked for that for a while. I got tired
- 3:45Speaker 3: and I sit down and I look. I start looking
- 3:47Speaker 3: at the trail cameras from this area that we're going,
- 3:50Speaker 3: and I'm like, man, uh, there's like no daylight pictures
- 3:54Speaker 3: of bucks and hardly even doze over the last like
- 3:56Speaker 3: three days. And I start thinking, you know what, it's
- 3:58Speaker 3: been pretty hot attally, it's it warmed up a lot
- 4:01Speaker 3: after that cold front. And I mean in Texas it's
- 4:04Speaker 3: been in the eighties, you know. And so I'm just
- 4:07Speaker 3: sitting here thinking, man, let's just look at the weather
- 4:10Speaker 3: and see when the hot streak ends, well the ends,
- 4:12Speaker 3: you know Thursday for most of the country or whatever,
- 4:14Speaker 3: is when Wednesday Thursdays when kind of that cold front
- 4:17Speaker 3: starts to come in. And so I was like, okay,
- 4:19Speaker 3: well I'll wait a little bit later to go and
- 4:22Speaker 3: do some some hunting and lo and behold, instead of
- 4:27Speaker 3: leaving that morning and hunting that afternoon, I decided to
- 4:31Speaker 3: leave a few days later. Well, that next morning comes
- 4:35Speaker 3: and you know, no big deal. I think you had
- 4:39Speaker 3: just gotten home. I'm doing some work stuff. And then
- 4:42Speaker 3: that evening comes around when I should be hunting, and
- 4:46Speaker 3: there are some golden pictures of a Mondo eight point.
- 4:52Speaker 3: There's a couple in there in daylight in the last
- 4:55Speaker 3: few days. Yeah, so it's, uh, there's this thing, there's
- 5:00Speaker 3: this thing, there's a there's a there's a slope that
- 5:04Speaker 3: continuously goes up as it goes to the right on
- 5:07Speaker 3: the graph, and it goes up until it starts going
- 5:11Speaker 3: back down probably and like maybe maybe mid to late November,
- 5:16Speaker 3: but it's going up right now, and it is it
- 5:19Speaker 3: is rough movement essentially right and every day so like
- 5:26Speaker 3: you have another you have another line that can cross
- 5:30Speaker 3: this slope at any point and give you your amount
- 5:32Speaker 3: of deer movement. And it's called weather, right, and so
- 5:35Speaker 3: your weather can help at times, it can move that
- 5:38Speaker 3: point up and down this this slope of deer movement. Right.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So we got to the point where we're at the
- 5:46Speaker 3: point now where deer movement is about at the peak
- 5:48Speaker 3: that it can possibly be at on a standalone basis,
- 5:52Speaker 3: and then you know, the so that the weather doesn't
- 5:55Speaker 3: even affect this thing, and whereas like in the last
- 5:59Speaker 3: few days's weather kind of still affected it because there's
- 6:03Speaker 3: still not fully where the peak of that deer movement.
- 6:08Speaker 3: So the X Y data point for later this week
- 6:12Speaker 3: is real good because that's going to push it and
- 6:14Speaker 3: the weather's gonna be good.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So that's the that's the kind of the shining piece
- 6:18Speaker 2: in this thing, is that your decision still might have
- 6:20Speaker 2: been good because I just checked the trail camera. There's
- 6:22Speaker 2: a brand new buck on there. Oh I don't know if
- 6:25Speaker 2: you shoot or not. It's kind of young, but he's big.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I mean, you know, one shooter years old. For me,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I guarantee you he's an eight point with long times.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But that happens now. I'm just that's what I was
- 6:38Speaker 2: getting to.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I made a dumb point way too long, but like
- 6:42Speaker 3: a good point way too long by being dumb. So anyway,
- 6:46Speaker 3: the the the as the days go into November past
- 6:51Speaker 3: that first week, even I think you just even despite
- 6:54Speaker 3: weather being warm, you start to see And that's where
- 6:57Speaker 3: we got to where you know, we had we didn't
- 6:59Speaker 3: have quiet the rut influence and the testosterone influence to have.
- 7:04Speaker 3: It just was a perfect story of me looking at
- 7:06Speaker 3: cameras and then all of a sudden it's like, Okay,
- 7:07Speaker 3: well it's the fifth or sixth or whatever it is.
- 7:09Speaker 3: It's like it's time and they just show up anyway,
- 7:12Speaker 3: even if it's seventy to eighty degrees or whatever.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, if you think Toder and I make good
- 7:16Speaker 2: decisions or bad decisions or indecisive either way, if you
- 7:19Speaker 2: want to hear more about what we think about the rut,
- 7:22Speaker 2: we've been doing a Rut Q and A. We've got
- 7:24Speaker 2: a ton of questions about the rut. So if you
- 7:27Speaker 2: go check out the Element podcast, we just launched a
- 7:29Speaker 2: brand new Q and A on that, and then also
- 7:32Speaker 2: coming up soon, if you heard a little allusion to
- 7:35Speaker 2: maybe a deer that might have went down up in
- 7:37Speaker 2: the North Country on some public ground, you want to hear.
- 7:40Speaker 3: That story, go check out the Element podcast as well.
- 7:42Speaker 3: We'll get into that.
- 7:43Speaker 2: But today we're going to get into some rut hype
- 7:47Speaker 2: from a couple of guys around the country.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Who are those dudes. Well, so we've got our good
- 7:51Speaker 3: buddy read Struble, who's been on before at some point
- 7:54Speaker 3: in this season. I think he was the first week.
- 7:56Speaker 3: He sure was, and he he hunts that trifecta area
- 8:00Speaker 3: of the US where they don't really know where they're from,
- 8:02Speaker 3: you know what I'm talking about. It's like Indiana, maybe
- 8:08Speaker 3: Tennessee was even in there. So he's he's actually killed
- 8:12Speaker 3: him his first buck uh with a trad bow in Indiana,
- 8:16Speaker 3: uh this week. So he's given us a report from Indiana,
- 8:18Speaker 3: which is a state that you don't hear. It kind
- 8:20Speaker 3: of flies under the radar a little bit, but it
- 8:22Speaker 3: has the potential to have a big, big deer. In fact,
- 8:25Speaker 3: I think the number two typical from last year, the
- 8:28Speaker 3: number two typical in the world, came from Indiana, right.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I don't remember, I believe. So do you know that
- 8:34Speaker 2: there are some giants there. I talked to a guy
- 8:36Speaker 2: a few years back that had a ranch there and
- 8:38Speaker 2: or a farm whatever they call him up there.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And monsters yep.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Uh.
- 8:42Speaker 3: We also have like I mentioned earlier, our good buddy
- 8:45Speaker 3: Jannis Pitelis. He's been up in Wisconsin doing the Latvian
- 8:48Speaker 3: thing up there and hunting them deer, you know, is
- 8:51Speaker 3: that uh they call it Eastern Europe. Was that Wisconsin?
- 8:58Speaker 3: No Latvia? Yeah, sure, it's I don't know for sure
- 9:02Speaker 3: where it's at. There is a polka influence in Wisconsin, right,
- 9:05Speaker 3: That's what I remember when we did when we put
- 9:07Speaker 3: together the Illinois buck truck and we were real close
- 9:10Speaker 3: to Wisconsin, there was bunchreal tell me that that polka
- 9:13Speaker 3: music was big up there. Jake Hofer another good buddy
- 9:17Speaker 3: of ours, who's one of those guys like Sam Hogan
- 9:19Speaker 3: if you heard him last week. He is like just
- 9:23Speaker 3: the humble, laughy guy that pretends like he can't kill
- 9:26Speaker 3: here and then every year he ends up killing Mondo's.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And he also has got his thumb on the pulse. Dude,
- 9:31Speaker 3: Oh he does. He is tax show. Yeah, dude, I'm
- 9:35Speaker 3: letting listen. If you know this guy, do not tell
- 9:37Speaker 3: him Anything's okay. He will figure it out. He makes
- 9:40Speaker 3: fun of us for finding all his spots because we have,
- 9:42Speaker 3: but he will do the same back to you. So
- 9:45Speaker 3: you got to watch that guy, Jake Hofer in Illinois. Man,
- 9:47Speaker 3: he's got a good report. Killed a nice buck and
- 9:50Speaker 3: then uh oh, Lay McNasty from Louisiana down south hanging
- 9:55Speaker 3: out in the swamps getting mac nasty down there. He's
- 9:58Speaker 3: been out hunting actually in the Midwest in Missouri, but
- 10:01Speaker 3: he's now back in his I guess home state of
- 10:04Speaker 3: Louisiana and he's doing some hunting around there. So he's
- 10:06Speaker 3: got a good report for us from the South. Things
- 10:09Speaker 3: are starting to pop off there as well. So we're
- 10:11Speaker 3: gonna get all these guys on the phone and see
- 10:15Speaker 3: what is going on all throughout the Midwest and there
- 10:18Speaker 3: in Louisiana once again world famous read Struggle the man
- 10:23Speaker 3: who first made the mullet popular. What's going on, dude?
- 10:27Speaker 5: Man? That is quite the intro.
- 10:29Speaker 3: What's going on? You just interviewing a guy who's killed
- 10:33Speaker 3: a buck in Indiana? What about you?
- 10:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 10:36Speaker 6: Yeah, Yeah, I'm just you know, been hunting really hard.
- 10:39Speaker 7: Talking to a couple of Texas guys that are that
- 10:41Speaker 7: are working hard right now?
- 10:42Speaker 3: Yeah, you got you got someboddies up there that are
- 10:44Speaker 3: from Texas and y'all been deer hunting a little bit, right,
- 10:47Speaker 3: has it been?
- 10:47Speaker 5: Yes, sir, Yes, sir, it's been incredible.
- 10:50Speaker 7: This weekend just was pretty much textbook is hard a
- 10:55Speaker 7: pre rudders who could get cold fronts, you know, real
- 10:57Speaker 7: cold in the morning, good even sits warm up up.
- 11:00Speaker 7: And basically we had deer around us Saturday morning, saw
- 11:05Speaker 7: five deer, three bucks.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Two those I killed my buck on that.
- 11:11Speaker 7: Evening, Saturday evening, and then we killed two more bucks
- 11:16Speaker 7: yesterday morning on Sunday, the fifth in thirty seconds.
- 11:22Speaker 2: That's maximizing right there. Okay, so we got to unpick
- 11:26Speaker 2: this just a little bit. How Okay, that's a special
- 11:29Speaker 2: thing to happen. What's the tactic because it had to
- 11:31Speaker 2: they had to be kind of connected, right, what's the
- 11:33Speaker 2: tactic that made that happen?
- 11:34Speaker 7: Yeah, so, yeah, absolutely, So the three bucks are separating
- 11:36Speaker 7: on two separate properties. But so mine was actually, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 7: hunting on private land and my folks.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Which was really cool. I killed my first buck with.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Traditional equipment, and he was working. He's right mouth open,
- 11:51Speaker 7: you know, working a bench and checking. You know, he
- 11:56Speaker 7: stopped for I actually shot him while he was moving,
- 12:00Speaker 7: you know, he basically never never really stopped. He's just
- 12:02Speaker 7: kind of slowly trotting through and shot him at eight
- 12:05Speaker 7: yards double lung, and he literally died in twenty yards.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Never knew it happened.
- 12:11Speaker 7: Yeah, it was incredible, twenty literally with twenty Yes.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Literally with twenty just oh man.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, incredible. He didn't even know what happened.
- 12:22Speaker 7: He stood underneath my tree and had the wobbles, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 7: underneath me, and then did a death dive and died.
- 12:29Speaker 5: It rolled down the hill at twenty yards.
- 12:31Speaker 7: It was while my buddy from Texas who drove didn't
- 12:35Speaker 7: sleep for thirty six hours, watched the entire thing happen.
- 12:40Speaker 3: That's cool. That is cool.
- 12:42Speaker 9: Man.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Yeah, died right in front of his tree.
- 12:44Speaker 10: It was incredible.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Nice.
- 12:45Speaker 7: So, yeah, he was working, you know, basically we're set
- 12:47Speaker 7: up on a bench, expect with the wind in our favor,
- 12:51Speaker 7: expecting him, you know, dear to be working that bench
- 12:54Speaker 7: trying to catch a set of a hot dough.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, essentially, So cruising bucks is the thing, and you're
- 12:59Speaker 2: finding beach on terrain that do that. Or are those
- 13:02Speaker 2: deer using the wind mostly or is it they're just
- 13:06Speaker 2: coming in to a place they know does hang out
- 13:08Speaker 2: or what's that look like?
- 13:10Speaker 7: The three bucks that we've had less one of them.
- 13:15Speaker 7: One was a little different than the other ones, but
- 13:17Speaker 7: two were, you win, in their favor. They're working these
- 13:20Speaker 7: benches in the morning. We had killed the one working
- 13:25Speaker 7: a bench, you know, trying to catch those rising thermals.
- 13:27Speaker 7: And then my buck was at the lowest bench on
- 13:30Speaker 7: the ridge on the hillface and trying to pull those
- 13:35Speaker 7: thermals down to them, and we were set up.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Just belowing, gotcha, gotcha? So are they heading? Are those
- 13:42Speaker 3: benches heading towards h food source or are they heading
- 13:45Speaker 3: towards doe betting?
- 13:47Speaker 7: Yeah, so the the one that both of them are
- 13:51Speaker 7: coming from betting going to a food source was the
- 13:57Speaker 7: travel root or vice versa. One was coming in one
- 14:00Speaker 7: of the morning, so they're basically going to the food source,
- 14:02Speaker 7: are coming back, and these benches are running from one
- 14:05Speaker 7: to the other. And then the biggest of the three bucks,
- 14:09Speaker 7: we rattled in and had him at I had him
- 14:12Speaker 7: at twenty eight, and he swung to get our wind,
- 14:17Speaker 7: buggered on us and went straight up the hillside and
- 14:20Speaker 7: walked fifteen yards underneath of my buddy.
- 14:22Speaker 5: His big, biggest buck of his life.
- 14:24Speaker 7: And yeah, I killed with his grandpa's compound, an old
- 14:27Speaker 7: eighty four oh night.
- 14:29Speaker 10: So that was really really cool.
- 14:30Speaker 7: It was an incredible experience and actually had to views
- 14:34Speaker 7: a had to use a drone to.
- 14:36Speaker 6: End up finding it.
- 14:37Speaker 5: So we found it yeah, it was. It was very interesting,
- 14:40Speaker 5: but it did work. He went seven hundred yards.
- 14:42Speaker 7: It was a gut shot and found him seven hundred
- 14:44Speaker 7: yards and went and got him.
- 14:46Speaker 3: The No One waist up in your neck of the
- 14:48Speaker 3: woods man, good stuff.
- 14:49Speaker 5: No, yeah, yeah, exactly all means necessary.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah, So in the next week, do you expect things
- 14:55Speaker 3: to be very similar?
- 14:57Speaker 7: I'm we've got the next couple of days just from
- 15:02Speaker 7: trail cameras.
- 15:03Speaker 5: We just pulled a couple of cams.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Things are were really really hot for the over the weekend.
- 15:08Speaker 7: I think it's going to slow down.
- 15:09Speaker 5: For a day or two. But we've got a front
- 15:10Speaker 5: coming in on Thursday, and I think this is going
- 15:13Speaker 5: to fire up in this weekend. Is going to be
- 15:15Speaker 5: really good.
- 15:16Speaker 7: They're they're pushing hard, and I've noticed it's been a
- 15:18Speaker 7: lot of younger bucks that have been pushing the dose.
- 15:22Speaker 5: I don't know quite how many, you know.
- 15:24Speaker 7: I haven't seen a Doe and heat with five bucks
- 15:27Speaker 7: chasing their by any means yet, but I think there's
- 15:30Speaker 7: mature bucks this week into this weekend.
- 15:34Speaker 5: It's going to be when you.
- 15:36Speaker 7: See the you know what everyone's looking for with a
- 15:38Speaker 7: crazy I like to hear it.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Man, So it's going to happen.
- 15:41Speaker 2: You know, if you had to rank it on a
- 15:44Speaker 2: scale of one to ten, what are you going to
- 15:45Speaker 2: call it.
- 15:46Speaker 7: I'm going to give the next two days a good old.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Five probably, but I'm giving Thursday to.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Saturday a nine.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Oh that's a high number. Let's go. Well, appreciate it, man.
- 16:05Speaker 8: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna put it put a
- 16:06Speaker 8: hot number. I think it's gonna be good.
- 16:08Speaker 5: We're going to see some big We're going to see
- 16:10Speaker 5: some big ones get killed.
- 16:11Speaker 3: That's awesome, dude.
- 16:12Speaker 2: We'll congrats on all the success y'all are having up there, man,
- 16:14Speaker 2: And I can't wait to see the next big book
- 16:16Speaker 2: picture you send us.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Yes, sir, appreciate y'all.
- 16:19Speaker 2: On the phone, I have got Yannis poutell Us with
- 16:22Speaker 2: meat Eater. He is in Wisconsin hunting up some whitetail deer.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Giannie. What's going on, man?
- 16:30Speaker 8: H I'm hammering, man, I'm putting my rut cation.
- 16:35Speaker 11: Uh, it's gone from rut cation to the rout grind.
- 16:39Speaker 3: That's what's going on.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Yeah, where is the pivot point on that exactly?
- 16:45Speaker 8: I would say it's.
- 16:46Speaker 11: Probably around days six or seven for me, I think
- 16:49Speaker 11: I'm about nine days in, so I was, I.
- 16:52Speaker 10: Was, I was.
- 16:53Speaker 11: I was pretty high spirited all the way through that.
- 16:56Speaker 11: But uh, I also hit a buck and didn't recover it.
- 16:59Speaker 11: And so that's that's been a little bit of a low.
- 17:01Speaker 8: Point, a little bit of a hole I'm climbing out of.
- 17:03Speaker 11: But I got one day left and the weather's gonna
- 17:06Speaker 11: be nice and cool, and the wind's gonna be calm
- 17:08Speaker 11: in the morning. So I'm looking forward to hopefully one more.
- 17:12Speaker 8: Day of good rut hunting.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that's good. I'm sorry you didn't recover that buck.
- 17:17Speaker 3: But that's bow hunting.
- 17:18Speaker 2: You know, it's a very cliche thing to say, but
- 17:20Speaker 2: if you are a bowhunter, you understand that for sure. Yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 2: you have a big time span there that you've spent
- 17:26Speaker 2: in the woods. See, I'm sure you've got to see
- 17:27Speaker 2: like the rut come alive almost, which is like a
- 17:30Speaker 2: really great privilege. But what have the deer been doing
- 17:33Speaker 2: the past few days there in Wisconsin?
- 17:36Speaker 8: Uh, just the past few days?
- 17:40Speaker 11: You know, when I when I shot my bot, he
- 17:43Speaker 11: was on his feet at three point thirty in the afternoon,
- 17:46Speaker 11: just cruising, just caughting across dough trails that led from
- 17:50Speaker 11: a ridge down to h to a course to a
- 17:53Speaker 11: standing corn field. And I knew I had a half
- 17:56Speaker 11: dozen you know, trails going up and down from the dose,
- 17:59Speaker 11: and a.
- 18:00Speaker 8: Trail going across all of them.
- 18:01Speaker 11: I figured, you know, some bucks would be cruising it,
- 18:04Speaker 11: and sure enough he was at three thirty.
- 18:07Speaker 8: Just about every day.
- 18:09Speaker 11: This week, I've had all day activity of some cruising
- 18:13Speaker 11: of some sort. Surprisingly, the only day that I've actually
- 18:16Speaker 11: seen a buck with a dough was October thirtieth.
- 18:24Speaker 8: Now that was the one day I saw.
- 18:25Speaker 3: A big front. I guess, huh, one hundred percent.
- 18:29Speaker 11: Like I got in here right when that front got here.
- 18:32Speaker 11: I was probably I was one day late. I missed
- 18:34Speaker 11: the first day of it. But now I was in
- 18:36Speaker 11: the tree on the thirtieth, and yeah, they came by
- 18:40Speaker 11: me right at first, like it was too dark still
- 18:42Speaker 11: to shoot. But like I said, ever since then, it's
- 18:47Speaker 11: been good activity.
- 18:49Speaker 8: Almost all day long.
- 18:50Speaker 11: I'm hunting the ridgetops mostly so I can have good wind,
- 18:54Speaker 11: and they seem to be more active, more action up
- 18:57Speaker 11: there in the mornings. My evening's up there tend to
- 19:00Speaker 11: be a little bit slower, and so I've been the
- 19:04Speaker 11: last few days. Aside from looking for that buck, I've
- 19:08Speaker 11: been moving off the ridgetops and trying to hunt down
- 19:11Speaker 11: closer towards the ag and the valley bottoms.
- 19:14Speaker 6: In the evenings.
- 19:15Speaker 3: You've mentioned the wind a couple of times, Johnas, what
- 19:19Speaker 3: can you kind of explain the dynamic you have going
- 19:21Speaker 3: on there? What hypothesis you have as to why the
- 19:24Speaker 3: evenings are slower than the mornings or vice versa, or
- 19:27Speaker 3: what all's going on there? Exactly?
- 19:30Speaker 8: Well, I wish I knew Yler. Maybe it's very hilly country.
- 19:37Speaker 11: We've got about two hundred to two hundred and fifty
- 19:40Speaker 11: feet of elevation relief between the valley bottoms and the
- 19:45Speaker 11: ag and these ridge tops, and some of these draws
- 19:49Speaker 11: and valleys aren't more than, you know, a couple hundred
- 19:52Speaker 11: three hundred yards apart. And so when you get these
- 19:55Speaker 11: anything that picks up over ten miles an hour, really
- 19:58Speaker 11: when it comes across those rich and then it drops
- 20:01Speaker 11: into these bowls, who knows what it's doing. I'm still
- 20:03Speaker 11: trying to figure all that out.
- 20:05Speaker 2: So this is country that you grew up hunting, rot
- 20:08Speaker 2: This is kind of like your childhood deer camp. And
- 20:11Speaker 2: I know just from talks with you you kind of
- 20:14Speaker 2: came into archery hunting as an adult a little bit
- 20:16Speaker 2: more so, how's your approach changed in that type of
- 20:19Speaker 2: country as you kind of have to change or do
- 20:21Speaker 2: change your tactics.
- 20:24Speaker 8: You know, it's it's big woods country.
- 20:27Speaker 11: We don't there's no besides the little bit of ag
- 20:30Speaker 11: that's at the at the foot of the hills. Otherwise
- 20:33Speaker 11: everything all that land, you know, the four or five
- 20:37Speaker 11: hundred acres I have access to is basically just.
- 20:39Speaker 8: All big mature oak forest.
- 20:42Speaker 11: There's been some clear cutting done in there and some
- 20:45Speaker 11: selective cutting, but for the most part you're hunting woods,
- 20:47Speaker 11: and so finding the edge habitat, finding the funnels is tricky.
- 20:53Speaker 8: It's it's not easy to do.
- 20:54Speaker 11: So a lot of times the easiest thing to do
- 20:56Speaker 11: is just fine where three or four riches come together
- 21:00Speaker 11: and set up set up on the down wind side
- 21:02Speaker 11: of that. But I'd say the biggest thing that's just
- 21:05Speaker 11: changed from being just a kid coming up here rifle
- 21:07Speaker 11: haunting to you know, now being a bull hunter is
- 21:11Speaker 11: just having to you know, take that, take what you
- 21:14Speaker 11: think about the deer movement in this country and just
- 21:17Speaker 11: pinpoint it down to a place where you're gonna have
- 21:21Speaker 11: a twenty yard shot.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Are there any acrons falling?
- 21:26Speaker 11: You know, it's funny because they're actually not because they
- 21:30Speaker 11: have all fallen, But there are places where you will
- 21:33Speaker 11: literally roll down the.
- 21:35Speaker 8: Hill after ball bearings. We had.
- 21:39Speaker 11: We had such a good acorn crop this year, a
- 21:41Speaker 11: lot of them, actually, some of the like one of
- 21:43Speaker 11: my spots I love to haunt.
- 21:45Speaker 8: I call it the Oak Flat.
- 21:46Speaker 11: It's just it's just kind of one of those ridge tops,
- 21:48Speaker 11: but it opens up and it's eighty yards across and
- 21:54Speaker 11: I walk that thing and it's pretty.
- 21:55Speaker 8: It's just been picked clean.
- 21:57Speaker 11: So the bears and the deer and the turkey ball
- 21:59Speaker 11: been in there, are just hammering those acorns. So there's
- 22:02Speaker 11: a few places where you can find a bunch of them,
- 22:04Speaker 11: but the critters have been on them.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Well, we have another cold front that's supposed to kind
- 22:09Speaker 2: of move through the country over the next week, and
- 22:11Speaker 2: I know that you're fixing to wrap up your hunt here.
- 22:14Speaker 2: But as any good hunter, I'm sure you're sitting there
- 22:17Speaker 2: thinking about just what might happen in the woods going forward.
- 22:20Speaker 3: What do you expect the deer to be doing here
- 22:21Speaker 3: in the next week.
- 22:25Speaker 11: Well, it seems like with that cold front that the
- 22:28Speaker 11: pressure is also gonna come up. And it sure seemed
- 22:30Speaker 11: like over the last week when that pressure was high,
- 22:33Speaker 11: there was a little bit more movement than when it
- 22:35Speaker 11: dropped off, which you know, I think everybody knows that
- 22:37Speaker 11: they tend to move more when the pressures up. So
- 22:40Speaker 11: that's coming with this cold front. So that's gonna be good.
- 22:44Speaker 11: But I'd say in general, it's just gonna keep getting.
- 22:47Speaker 6: Better and better and better.
- 22:48Speaker 11: And I still think from today, which is the seventh, right, guys,
- 22:58Speaker 11: this six or six or seven, it's been a long
- 23:01Speaker 11: stretch for me. I feel like there's still gonna be
- 23:05Speaker 11: two or three good days of just that, like good
- 23:08Speaker 11: kind of seeking cruising activity until you start getting some
- 23:13Speaker 11: bucks that are gonna be more into, you know, finding
- 23:16Speaker 11: their dough and getting locked down, and then you're gonna
- 23:18Speaker 11: get into that part where you're like, oh man, nothing's
- 23:21Speaker 11: going on, But it's just because you're not in that
- 23:23Speaker 11: spot wherever everything's going on.
- 23:26Speaker 3: You know. So with all this in mind, if you
- 23:28Speaker 3: had to put a number on it from on a
- 23:31Speaker 3: scale of one to ten, what would you what would
- 23:34Speaker 3: you like guess that the buck movement is gonna be
- 23:37Speaker 3: like in the next week.
- 23:43Speaker 8: Nine, the third game.
- 23:47Speaker 11: I'm an eternal optimist and I've I've been hunting like
- 23:51Speaker 11: a i'd say, like a six or a seven, and
- 23:55Speaker 11: I just feel like it's just ramp It's gonna ramp
- 23:58Speaker 11: up again with like you guys said this next cold
- 24:00Speaker 11: front and so yeah, man, it's gonna be good.
- 24:03Speaker 8: I wish I had more days.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I appreciate the optimism, dude. And the comulatve score
- 24:08Speaker 2: this week is like really high we're.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Looking at it's.
- 24:12Speaker 9: Like thirty eight.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So yeah, it's it's officially wattail Hop week, and we
- 24:17Speaker 2: appreciate you being on to share the hop you honest,
- 24:19Speaker 2: thanks man.
- 24:21Speaker 8: Yeah, you're welcome. Thank you, guys.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Jake Koper is on the way to Iowa, but he's
- 24:42Speaker 3: been in Illinois hunting big bucks in a state that
- 24:45Speaker 3: has a lot of them sometimes, at least in the past,
- 24:48Speaker 3: it has, Jake, Jake, you killed one recently, right.
- 24:52Speaker 9: Yeah, man, I was fortunate enough to notch my Illinois
- 24:57Speaker 9: tag on November third in the.
- 24:58Speaker 10: Evening about five thirty.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Golly, this is one last big one in Illinois.
- 25:02Speaker 9: Now, for sure, one last, but there's still a few
- 25:07Speaker 9: running around.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's kind of early in the in the
- 25:12Speaker 2: rut for the scheme of things. And I know you
- 25:14Speaker 2: pretty well, and I feel like you usually you're kind
- 25:17Speaker 2: of playing it safe and being conservative and slipping in
- 25:21Speaker 2: on one a little later in the year usually. So
- 25:24Speaker 2: I was just surprised that you went ahead and killed
- 25:25Speaker 2: this early. Was there something that you really picked out
- 25:28Speaker 2: on this deer that was like the tactic to go to?
- 25:30Speaker 10: You know.
- 25:31Speaker 9: I wish I could sound really smart and tell you
- 25:33Speaker 9: all these different things I had figured out.
- 25:34Speaker 10: But I was in Iowa, Honting.
- 25:36Speaker 9: I hunted in Iowa for eight days, and I was
- 25:39Speaker 9: in the stand Friday morning. I was like, man, I
- 25:42Speaker 9: really feel like I can go back and kill a
- 25:43Speaker 9: salader in Illinois over the weekend before things really frank
- 25:47Speaker 9: off in Iowa. And so I packed up a ten
- 25:50Speaker 9: o'clock drove straight to the farm. And November three has
- 25:53Speaker 9: always been one of my favorite days. I feel that
- 25:56Speaker 9: there's a lot of solid year covering some distance, and
- 26:00Speaker 9: I did some work on this farm and ironically drove straight.
- 26:04Speaker 10: To the farm.
- 26:05Speaker 9: This is the first time I ever set up in
- 26:07Speaker 9: this new mouse trap, and I worked perfectly.
- 26:10Speaker 10: It was a deer.
- 26:11Speaker 9: Governing some distance, not a deer that I had around
- 26:14Speaker 9: very often. I had some velvet pictures of them, and
- 26:17Speaker 9: it was just a classic He was looking for a dough,
- 26:19Speaker 9: I think, and there was some other good deer that
- 26:22Speaker 9: started to show up on that farm. And I think
- 26:24Speaker 9: one of the biggest challenges this year is being there
- 26:27Speaker 9: before it happens. And there was just the inkling of
- 26:31Speaker 9: information that things were.
- 26:32Speaker 10: Starting to get really good there.
- 26:34Speaker 9: So I drove straight there and read the script twenty
- 26:37Speaker 9: yards and had an Illinois buck down after like three
- 26:39Speaker 9: out person in the blind there. So it was one
- 26:42Speaker 9: of those weird things that doesn't work out often, but
- 26:45Speaker 9: holy cow, what it does?
- 26:47Speaker 10: You feel kind of smart?
- 26:48Speaker 3: M hey, can you explain what the mousetrap is?
- 26:52Speaker 9: Absolutely so the mouse trap. So I got this farm,
- 26:55Speaker 9: there was a blind on it, and it was a
- 26:57Speaker 9: situation where you'd have to be access to the line
- 27:00Speaker 9: wasn't ideal.
- 27:01Speaker 10: You'd have to.
- 27:01Speaker 9: Walk where the deer where they're vetted or probably gonna
- 27:04Speaker 9: see you walk in. You have to walk straight through
- 27:06Speaker 9: the food plot and lay down a lot of grounds.
- 27:08Speaker 9: And so what I did this year is I moved
- 27:10Speaker 9: that blind and actually dozed into new access road just
- 27:13Speaker 9: straight down this hill and I can slip right in,
- 27:16Speaker 9: not even step foot into the food plot. And how
- 27:18Speaker 9: the architecture of the plot, there's a really good pinch
- 27:21Speaker 9: where your SHOT's gonna be fifteen to twenty yards and
- 27:24Speaker 9: you're gonna see him coming. And that's exactly what happened.
- 27:27Speaker 9: I mean, it worked exactly.
- 27:29Speaker 10: How I imagine when I did it, and that's really
- 27:31Speaker 10: rewarding just just see some of that work.
- 27:34Speaker 9: Actually pay off and everything come together. It just fixed
- 27:37Speaker 9: up for all the times where it doesn't work out
- 27:39Speaker 9: yet you plan.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Was that was? So was the deer eating in the
- 27:43Speaker 3: food plot or was he cruising?
- 27:45Speaker 9: He was cruising, Yeah, so he was cruising.
- 27:47Speaker 10: I seen him.
- 27:47Speaker 9: And when I saw him, I was like, man, this
- 27:49Speaker 9: year is a big frame. And I was like, you
- 27:52Speaker 9: kind of go through that archive in your brain as
- 27:53Speaker 9: fast as possible as.
- 27:55Speaker 10: You see him coming.
- 27:56Speaker 9: And I was like, man, he's got a big frame.
- 27:57Speaker 9: I think he's got a sticker on us too, I said.
- 27:59Speaker 9: In the back of my mind, I was like, I'm
- 28:00Speaker 9: pretty sure I had one in the summer that was
- 28:03Speaker 9: like that, and it was. It was definitely in that
- 28:05Speaker 9: deer and it was kind of funny I grunted at him.
- 28:08Speaker 10: He was twenty yards.
- 28:09Speaker 9: I probably shouldn't have run at him. I know there's
- 28:10Speaker 9: a debate that you stop the deer or do you not.
- 28:12Speaker 9: And I tried stopping him. I was already at full draw,
- 28:15Speaker 9: and he whipped and looked square at me. And so
- 28:17Speaker 9: he's looking square.
- 28:18Speaker 10: At me, I'm not taking that shot. And then he
- 28:20Speaker 10: started to quarter away.
- 28:22Speaker 9: But it was still a hard quartering qu shot and
- 28:24Speaker 9: I put it right right in his armpit.
- 28:25Speaker 10: And you know, I didn't see him go down.
- 28:28Speaker 9: And this is probably something this is probably timely information
- 28:31Speaker 9: for everyone.
- 28:32Speaker 10: I did not see him down go down.
- 28:34Speaker 9: I got my arrow, and I felt it was a
- 28:38Speaker 9: good shot, but I was a little concerned with how
- 28:40Speaker 9: hard he was quartering too. If my shot was this
- 28:42Speaker 9: two inches further back, he was probably gonna be a
- 28:45Speaker 9: straight stomach shot. But it ended up being a heart,
- 28:49Speaker 9: lung and stomach shot, and there was not a lot
- 28:53Speaker 9: of lung blood or anything on the arrow.
- 28:54Speaker 10: It was mainly stomach. So I backed out.
- 28:56Speaker 9: Overnight, and then we got a dog, and then we
- 28:57Speaker 9: found the deer. You know, really only hundred and twenty
- 29:00Speaker 9: yards before I shot them, So we played it safe
- 29:03Speaker 9: and it worked out for nice.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad that that went good for you. So,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you know, going forward, that was like the first week
- 29:09Speaker 2: in November. Right now we're kind of looking at somewhat
- 29:12Speaker 2: the second week in November.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Do you still feel like those deer.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Are going to be on that seeking type of activity
- 29:17Speaker 2: or would you think that guys might move in from
- 29:19Speaker 2: the field edge and go kind of more to the
- 29:21Speaker 2: thick stuff.
- 29:23Speaker 10: I think now.
- 29:24Speaker 9: It's probably the time where you want to start going
- 29:25Speaker 9: to that big stuff. And a lot of the cameras
- 29:28Speaker 9: I have on food sources right now, there's still some
- 29:30Speaker 9: does in there, and there's some food sources that are
- 29:32Speaker 9: quite a bit, you know, a lot less activity than
- 29:36Speaker 9: maybe a week or so ago. And I have to
- 29:37Speaker 9: imagine that now is the time to get in the
- 29:41Speaker 9: classic down window vetting or really good.
- 29:43Speaker 10: Pinch and log hours.
- 29:45Speaker 9: And I think that's probably a really good tactic for
- 29:48Speaker 9: right now to hopefully get an opportunity at a buck.
- 29:51Speaker 10: You've been run it around season.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Yeah, sweet man, I'm excited to tell you the truth
- 29:54Speaker 2: after talking to you about this stuff. If you had
- 29:56Speaker 2: to give the next week a ranking from a scale
- 29:59Speaker 2: of one in on buck movement, what would you give it?
- 30:02Speaker 11: Man?
- 30:03Speaker 10: So I would say historically, Ich.
- 30:07Speaker 9: So November third, November tenth to my favorite days. Obviously
- 30:09Speaker 9: November tenth is this week. So whether it's slightly biased
- 30:13Speaker 9: from past experience, I mean, I'm gonna get this thing
- 30:15Speaker 9: at nine out of ten. I think it's gonna be
- 30:17Speaker 9: really good week.
- 30:18Speaker 11: We have.
- 30:18Speaker 9: We have this front rolling in and I think those
- 30:21Speaker 9: really big deer are gonna start running around.
- 30:23Speaker 10: I know it's dependent on the country, but in.
- 30:25Speaker 9: Illinois, if you're listening, I would I would get a
- 30:28Speaker 9: little aggressive, and I would go log some hours at eight, nine, ten,
- 30:31Speaker 9: eleven and really enjoy it because it'll only be those
- 30:34Speaker 9: days once this year, believe it or not.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Mmm.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Man, I love it, dude, Thanks for the report, Thanks
- 30:38Speaker 2: for the hot Let's go Jake, kill a big one
- 30:40Speaker 2: in an hour.
- 30:41Speaker 9: All right, fingers cross, good catching.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Up on the phone.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I have got Louisiana's own lay McNasty. You might have
- 30:48Speaker 2: seen him in some videos like how third grade Girls
- 30:51Speaker 2: Fight and other things, but the dude is also a
- 30:54Speaker 2: big buck killer.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Man. What's going on down there in Louisiana?
- 30:58Speaker 4: Oh, nothing much, just trying to wait on the big
- 31:01Speaker 4: ones down here. I just got back from Missouri. Now
- 31:04Speaker 4: I got to see if I can get it done
- 31:05Speaker 4: in Louisiana.
- 31:06Speaker 3: A hot dog.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Louisiana is one of those places that has like quite
- 31:10Speaker 2: a variety of rut dates.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Correct.
- 31:13Speaker 6: Oh, absolutely, So how.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Do you time that kind of stuff out?
- 31:17Speaker 2: You can you travel, like, you know, forty miles this
- 31:20Speaker 2: way and hunt a rut in early November, and travel
- 31:22Speaker 2: forty miles that way and hunt in late December and
- 31:25Speaker 2: have a rut?
- 31:26Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I actually believe you can.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I haven't personally done it, not that I wouldn't, but
- 31:31Speaker 4: I want to say I don't want to butcher it
- 31:33Speaker 4: or be wrong about it, but I think up in
- 31:35Speaker 4: northern Louisiana the rut might start a little bit earlier
- 31:38Speaker 4: where I'm from. It normally we can kind of rely
- 31:42Speaker 4: on the rut to happen around Thanksgiving, you know, like
- 31:46Speaker 4: I can't count the times I've seen a good buck
- 31:48Speaker 4: movement on Thanksgiving Day, and I actually killed one on
- 31:51Speaker 4: Thanksgiving last year. And I want to say, in December
- 31:54Speaker 4: that might be when bucks are running around down in
- 31:58Speaker 4: southern Louisiana.
- 32:00Speaker 3: And they all swamp bucks down there. That's cool.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, so you've been out a little bit this week.
- 32:04Speaker 2: What tactics are you kind of hitting trying to catch
- 32:06Speaker 2: that pre red action?
- 32:07Speaker 3: You know?
- 32:08Speaker 4: Right now, I've been currently just wanting to see what
- 32:10Speaker 4: the deer moved are doing right now. Most of it's
- 32:13Speaker 4: just hunting creek bottoms where we know we've we've.
- 32:16Speaker 6: Got good pictures of deer traveling through.
- 32:19Speaker 4: But you know, right now, it's just been a lot
- 32:21Speaker 4: of dough still with their funds, you know, and younger
- 32:24Speaker 4: bucks cruising around eating. But we haven't I personally haven't
- 32:28Speaker 4: seen much of even the early.
- 32:31Speaker 6: Signs of the rut.
- 32:33Speaker 4: But that's always the case around this time in my experience.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Are you hunting food plots or acre trees or you know,
- 32:39Speaker 3: oak trees or whatever? You know how you will? Yeah,
- 32:42Speaker 3: what are you focused on? Well?
- 32:44Speaker 4: On our lease that we have, we actually have a
- 32:46Speaker 4: lot of success with I don't know if you've heard
- 32:49Speaker 4: of them brand bags.
- 32:50Speaker 6: We use a lot of rice bread, yeah, because.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Man, that that we've we've been using this per Simon
- 32:56Speaker 4: rice brand and it almost seems like that's just candy
- 32:58Speaker 4: to the deer there. Strangely enough, I've got another spot
- 33:01Speaker 4: I hunt to where brand doesn't work as well. So
- 33:05Speaker 4: I don't know these theer just seems so accustomed to
- 33:07Speaker 4: it here.
- 33:08Speaker 2: So you have to keep that stuff up off the
- 33:09Speaker 2: ground to where it then like it went or how
- 33:12Speaker 2: does that work?
- 33:13Speaker 3: We don't.
- 33:15Speaker 6: I mean, we've never had a problem with that.
- 33:17Speaker 4: If we do, where it does rain, like when you
- 33:20Speaker 4: go to your stand, we'll just walk out and kind
- 33:22Speaker 4: of kick out all the kind of solidified brand just
- 33:25Speaker 4: to kind of let the fresh brand fall.
- 33:27Speaker 6: But it's almost like.
- 33:28Speaker 4: A gravity bag that to where it kind of keeps refreshing.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Is Do you guys have percime trees in your area?
- 33:36Speaker 6: I think we do, but not.
- 33:39Speaker 4: I think I think I've kind of misheard what you
- 33:41Speaker 4: were saying. I thought you were talking about just in Louisiana.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I don't know if we have persimmon around where I'm hunting.
- 33:48Speaker 4: We might, but I don't think i've ever seen one.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Gotcha. Yeah, that was interesting because we did a test
- 33:53Speaker 3: on that with flavored corn a while back, and persimmon
- 33:56Speaker 3: did pretty well if I remember correctly in that video. Yeah, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 3: we have persimmons around though, So I just wondered if
- 34:02Speaker 3: there was some sort of correlation between that, right. But anyway,
- 34:06Speaker 3: so you said the movement hasn't been You haven't seen
- 34:10Speaker 3: hardly any rut movement. Have you seen decent just bed
- 34:12Speaker 3: to feed, you know, normal daylight activity or is it
- 34:16Speaker 3: mostly at night?
- 34:18Speaker 6: Well, I mean.
- 34:19Speaker 4: We've got two I call them our shooter bucks. They're
- 34:23Speaker 4: two good deer ones, like a real tall browtie nine
- 34:27Speaker 4: point and a good looking ten. But most of theirs
- 34:30Speaker 4: has been night, but they have kind of come out
- 34:32Speaker 4: and started feeding.
- 34:34Speaker 6: I realized one of them came out at like.
- 34:36Speaker 4: This was before the umb change the other day, but
- 34:39Speaker 4: came out around like seven am to where if somebody
- 34:42Speaker 4: was in the stand they could have got them before
- 34:45Speaker 4: right after hunting shooting hours.
- 34:46Speaker 6: But right now, I don't know that.
- 34:49Speaker 4: It seems like we're in that stage right now to
- 34:52Speaker 4: where now the bucks are kind of the big mature
- 34:55Speaker 4: deer are kind of disappearing now because it always seems
- 34:57Speaker 4: like right before the rut, your buck want to kind
- 35:00Speaker 4: of disappear and stop coming to your food sources that
- 35:04Speaker 4: we put out. So I mean, right now it's just
- 35:06Speaker 4: been I think the last buck I saw when I
- 35:08Speaker 4: went hunting, like I think two days ago, was like
- 35:11Speaker 4: a good young eight. He was a big body deer,
- 35:13Speaker 4: but I'm still not even seeing you know, deer open
- 35:18Speaker 4: up scrapes around, But in my opinion, I think it's
- 35:22Speaker 4: a matter of time, maybe within this week, before you
- 35:24Speaker 4: start seeing all those signs like that.
- 35:27Speaker 2: So yeah, that's what I kind of want to ask
- 35:29Speaker 2: you about next is as this next week progresses, if
- 35:32Speaker 2: you start seeing scrapes pop up and stuff, is that
- 35:34Speaker 2: going to be something that you focus on?
- 35:37Speaker 6: Yeah? I think so.
- 35:39Speaker 4: During that time, I feel like it's very common to
- 35:43Speaker 4: kind of start seeing those cruiser bucks coming around and
- 35:45Speaker 4: just kind of wait on them to check on stuff
- 35:48Speaker 4: and you know all that stuff.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 35:50Speaker 2: So looking forward then, I know you mentioned like Thanksgiving
- 35:54Speaker 2: type rut, so we're still very much pre rut, but
- 35:56Speaker 2: that's ramping up every day. If you had to give
- 35:59Speaker 2: it a on a scale of one to ten, how
- 36:02Speaker 2: do you feel like buck movement will be back or
- 36:04Speaker 2: will be like over the next week.
- 36:07Speaker 6: In my opinion, I would probably give it like a seven.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Other people might disagree or agree, but I mean, I
- 36:12Speaker 4: would think it would be kind of like that week
- 36:15Speaker 4: to where you can really expect to see some different movement.
- 36:19Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Good time to catch a deer on his feet slipping for.
- 36:22Speaker 3: The first time.
- 36:22Speaker 6: Huh yeah, absolutely, yeah.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Cool man. Well, hey, I really appreciate the report.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It's cool to get to talk to somebody from Louisiana
- 36:29Speaker 2: and keep it up day.
- 36:30Speaker 3: To look forward to some big buck pictures.
- 36:32Speaker 6: Awesome. I appreciate y'all getting in touch with me.
- 36:35Speaker 2: As we said before, the hype is real. It is
- 36:38Speaker 2: the second week in November. There is nowhere else you
- 36:40Speaker 2: should be except maybe your own wedding or the birth
- 36:43Speaker 2: of your child. Get in the woods right now because
- 36:45Speaker 2: the deer are going crazy all across the country. Tyler Jones,
- 36:50Speaker 2: my associate right here, my friend, my hunting partner, my buddy,
- 36:54Speaker 2: has definitely got his tab on the white tail end.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I do believe that Tyler Jones' feet. You're in an
- 37:00Speaker 2: article this past week North American wat Tail potentially.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah, try to pick a copy of that up.
- 37:06Speaker 3: We'll put a link to that in the description.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I think I think it's an online article or might
- 37:10Speaker 2: be a hard copy.
- 37:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 37:11Speaker 2: I think you're like center your buck is centerfold in
- 37:14Speaker 2: that thing. Yeah, speaking of spotlight and things.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, sorry man, good, No, that's yeah, it was
- 37:21Speaker 3: I was pretty surprised to find that out actually, but
- 37:23Speaker 3: that that's pretty cool, man. I think I think that's
- 37:25Speaker 3: pretty cool, you know. I mean, I'm gonna go get
- 37:27Speaker 3: me a hard copy because I think that the picture
- 37:30Speaker 3: I saw on social was a hard copy, but that
- 37:31Speaker 3: would be sick. Yeah, it's pretty cool, you know. Speaking
- 37:34Speaker 3: of articles, though they're on the Wired to Hunt feed
- 37:39Speaker 3: or whatever you want to call it on the website,
- 37:41Speaker 3: is a three day rut hunt plan from Dealing Tramp.
- 37:44Speaker 3: It's an article. You know, three days is what a
- 37:48Speaker 3: lot of guys get. Man take off on a Friday,
- 37:50Speaker 3: hunt through Sunday, or take off on you know, Thursday evening,
- 37:53Speaker 3: hunt Friday, Saturday, Sunday. That's what you got. So there's
- 37:56Speaker 3: three day rut hunt plan article there. It might help
- 37:59Speaker 3: you out, give you some thoughts, some creative juices, get
- 38:01Speaker 3: them flowing. And then also, we released a video on
- 38:06Speaker 3: the Mediator channel just now. If you're listening to this,
- 38:10Speaker 3: it's probably a day old or so, you should go
- 38:12Speaker 3: watch the video. Case C is featured in this video
- 38:17Speaker 3: as a guy smoking a big, old, just heavy toad
- 38:21Speaker 3: of an eight million point animal out in Nebraska. It's
- 38:28Speaker 3: an awesome video, little drama involved doing some new tactics
- 38:33Speaker 3: that you've never never encountered.
- 38:36Speaker 5: What you call it.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Uncomfortable, but it's just you know, people talk all the
- 38:41Speaker 2: time about getting out of your comfort zone, and it's
- 38:45Speaker 2: good for sure, But sometimes I don't realize what my
- 38:48Speaker 2: comfort zone is. I always think that like, oh, that
- 38:50Speaker 2: just means like doing something harder. Sometimes it just means
- 38:53Speaker 2: doing something a lot different than what you're used to.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And I definitely did that on this hunt and had
- 38:58Speaker 2: to kind of, you don't want to say, fly by
- 39:00Speaker 2: the seat of your pants, but definitely make adjustments to
- 39:03Speaker 2: what I was used to and.
- 39:05Speaker 3: I can't toss.
- 39:05Speaker 12: It was difficult for me too. I mean, shooting out
- 39:08Speaker 12: of them things was wild. Haybail blinds. If you never
- 39:12Speaker 12: hunted out of one, it's cool, but it's also it's
- 39:15Speaker 12: also very particular the way things work out of this.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, especially with some guy running a big shiny lens
- 39:23Speaker 2: behind you. There's not a lot of room and a
- 39:25Speaker 2: lot of hot air in there.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Breaths lots of breath anyway, man, thank you guys for listening.
- 39:31Speaker 3: I hope you enjoyed it. We'll be back next week
- 39:34Speaker 3: with more ret fresh radio reports from all across the country. Casey,
- 39:39Speaker 3: let's go kill some big old bucks. Let's do it.
- 39:42Speaker 3: This has been ret fresh, Keep it fresh.
