0:00
[upbeat music] [laughs] Yeah! Mike just, m- [laughs] Mike just took out the mic. Hey, everybody.
0:16
[laughs] Welcome to, uh, Full Spectrum Cycling, show number 55, from the Riverwest studio of Everyday Cycles here in Riverwest Milwaukee, Wisconsin universe, et cetera. Uh, got, uh, JK. Oh, yeah. Tony. Hey.
0:33
And joining us from way across the street, Caddy Corner as they say here in Milwaukee- [laughs]... uh, Tim from Black Husky Brewing. What's going on, man? PM. Hey, Tim. Right on.
0:44
Caddy- It's, it's- Caddy reference with a husky? I don't know. It's, uh [laughs]... Well, that's what they say... that's what they say. [laughs] The cat dog.
0:49
[laughs] The, the, the funny, the funny thing about that is that place was at one point called Mac Daddy's Caddy's Repair Shop. That is true. And it was a Cadillac-only repair shop. Really? Yeah.
1:00
[laughs] Very, very briefly before you guys bought the place. [laughs] Yeah, it was. It was kind of always a little hot rod shop, wasn't it? Yeah, it was always like some sort of little car-- well, obviously, you know?
1:09
But yeah, it was for a very brief period, and I remember looking over and kinda laughing. But then it was manual for a quite a while. It was a potato chip factory for a while, too- Oh... and a cookie factory. Wow.
1:20
Built in 1920, so it's 100 years old. Nice. Nice. There you go. Yeah, so, uh, Tim has been there for what, five years? Three and a half years. Three and a half years. Yeah. Same thing. Yeah, close, close enough. Yeah.
1:31
[laughs] Pretty much. But you're not new to brewing. I am not. We've been in business, it'll be 10 years. Yeah, it's pretty much 10 years now. But, you know, what the hell? Who's... Give or take a month or so.
1:43
But yeah, we, we started up in, uh, Pembine in northern Wisconsin. In fact, we were just there today. We, we came back, eh, a couple hours ago and, uh- Traveling to your second home.
1:54
Yeah, so, uh, Pembine's always gonna be home. You know, that's, that's really- Yeah... that's kinda where, you know, that's where they'll, um, spread my ashes.
2:03
Even though, actually what I really wanna do is, we're on a really small lake up there. It's kind of a-- it's not an-- it's not-- it's a mucky bottom lake. There's like no sand or anything on it.
2:13
It's a good place to go and just kinda hang out and, you know, watch the wildlife and stuff. But how I wanna go is I'm gonna ma- I love, I like working with wood, you know, and I wanna make a little Viking ship.
2:24
[laughs] And I wanna be burned- Oh, right on... I wanna be burned out in the middle- Yes... of the lake. That's- You know? I'd like to be there for that. Yeah. I'm certain Tony- Or-... can take care of that. Yeah.
2:33
It's all good. Considering our wives will outlive us, we all know that. That's the way it works. Yeah. Look at, look at Tony being all social distancing over there. I am. It's a solid six. Yeah. Solid.
2:43
But I have to come in to get my beer. [laughs] Yeah. So- Pushing the envelope... you know? I- With two arms. Yeah. You, you're like four arms away. I am. Well, but, you know, I got- We have short arms... Tim, Tim, yeah.
2:52
[laughs] Short guys. Very short arms. Yeah.
2:54
So besides Tim being our neighbor here at Everyday Cycles, it's, uh, a- and the brewery thing, which we've had Black Husky, I don't know how many times we've had Dogfather on, but we've had several- Yes...
3:06
other beers from your fine establishment as our show beer. And, uh, but you also are into cycling. Yes, I am, and kinda how I got into cycling was I've always been a very active person.
3:19
Um, back in the day, I used to be in power-lifting, so I was-- I loved lifting weights. I was-- my, my, my heaviest, I was 275 and- Massive... y- yeah. I was, I was pretty chubby.
3:33
But, um, my, my best bench was 500, so I was a pr- I was a pretty solid power-lifter. When we started the business, all of a sudden I'm like, "You know what?
3:41
I can't peel an orange without getting out of breath, so I've gotta kinda start getting in better shape," so I started running. And I've done-- I did that for quite a few years,
3:51
but, you know, my knees are shot right now. So last year, uh, we started, uh, cycling. So one of our good friends is, uh, Katie Zanzig.
4:01
She lives over here in the 'hood too with us, and she, um, got us into doing the Scenic Shore 150. So we did that last year, and we had a blast. It was great.
4:13
I could get out there and bike and have no problems with my knees at all. Yeah. Uh, get a lot of exercise. It was-- and I really, really enjoyed it. Super.
4:22
Yeah, it was, uh, definitely interesting to see you guys bring the bike that, uh, Tony had an incident on over- Yep... last summer. But, uh- Yeah... I'm glad you guys are enjoying it.
4:32
And I, you know, at the brewery, I've seen m- uh, lots of cyclists stop over there. And, uh, I know we've had-- well, we had our Surly demo night over there. Yeah, that, that was fantastic.
4:41
And I think you've had other cycling events too, correct? Yeah, we do a few here and there. Um, but we, we wouldn't mind doing more. I mean, I think it's a great thing to do. Um,
4:52
if you're gonna-- you know, all of us when we start getting into these different kind of exercises that we do, whether it's running or lifting or biking or anything, it gets to be a real obsession.
5:02
And I don't think it's a bad thing, to be honest with you. I think it's a good thing to, you know, to get out there and challenge yourself and, you know, kind of push yourself.
5:11
Because, I mean, our jobs aren't-- it's not like when we were, you know, out on the farm or, you know, out in the woods when you're working all day. We have, you know, a relatively sedentary lifestyle.
5:21
And so this kinda stuff really is-- it can be fun, it can be good for you, and it can also build a lot of community, which I think is the one thing I would say about Riverwest that
5:37
I've been really surprised with, even though I heard a lot about it. But I-- you know, you, you, you hear a lot of shit, you know? [laughs] Just, people say stuff all the time.
5:44
Riverwest is the best community in Milwaukee by far. And pe- Hear, hear. [laughs] Yeah. Pe- people just are-- they're, they're salt of the earth people, you know?
5:55
We're all, you know, real, and we hang out and we do stuff together. I, I, I love being here in Riverwest. Made a good call putting that place where you put it.
6:04
29, 29 years now for me, other than a quick trip to Chic- uh, to Colorado. But yeah, I- This is home, man. Yeah, if that, uh, if Black Husky wasn't a brewery, it sure would make a nice bike shop over there.
6:16
I just thought, you know, the only thing I thought of when it went for sale is I could live here. Yeah, for sure.
6:20
Literally, like I could see that, that, where the brewery is, that'd make such a cool space to have like a big stereo and just- You'd be like Dan Tana and drive your car right into your living room. Yeah, yeah.
6:30
Tu- turns out I kinda do live there. [laughs] Yeah, of course. Not, not so much no- right now, but- You still have more space there too if you need it, right? Yeah, upstairs- Inside...
6:39
upst- well, upstairs is where the ap- apartment, air quotes, is at, and it's, it's a, it's a mess up there. Um, but, um, I do... That's where I have my weights. We all, we have a, a, it's called a Tim gym. Very nice.
6:53
Nice, nice. That's very cool. Excellent. So as, as it's a little early but I'm thirsty- Top of the hill...
7:00
it's, it's, it's the top of the hill, uh, which means we gotta drink our beer and talk about our beer a little bit. Yeah. So let's have a swallow of- Mm-hmm... Yes She Can Pale Ale from Black Husky. Hmm.
7:16
That's, that's quite a fantastic beer.
7:17
Since, since Tim's here and he brews this, we might just ask him what he's, what he's going for and have him explain it a little bit, 'cause- Yeah, well, th- this is a collaboration beer that we did with Lakefront and
7:29
Gathering Place and Company, and it was...
7:33
It's a fundraiser for the Pink Boots Society, which is an organization, international organization that promotes women in brewing, um, and through, you know, different fundraisers and, um, kind of, uh, education and so on.
7:49
So we, um, actually worked a lot with the ladies from those four breweries. Toni kind of was the one that spearheaded that, and, um, Sam and I from, uh, Company, uh, her and I worked a lot on coming up with the recipe.
8:05
Typically, my beers are gonna be a lot bigger than this, and Sam wanted something a little bit smaller. She wanted more of a, you know, more sessionable beer. Most my beers are 7.5%, you know?
8:17
That's, that, that's a session- Yeah, we know. So yeah, when, when you say big beer, you're talking the, the, the alcohol by volume? Al- alcohol content as a big beer. Got it, yeah.
8:24
You know, it, but it also takes- But, but even 6%'s not really a session, is it? It is to me. [laughs] I, I, I, I was- 5%, I was watching that get eaten up. Yeah, yeah, it's like, right? Excellent answer.
8:34
It's like holiday IPA is 4.5. That's kind of a session for, for me. Yeah. No, that's, a 4 and... That's why I have HAMS. Gotcha. You know? So the beer water is- Yep, HAMS. Yeah. It's, it's real beer water, you know?
8:46
I mean- Yeah... if I'm gonna... I have had very few good session IPAs. Um, so if I feel like I need to coast, I will, uh, grab some HAMS.
8:56
Anybody who's been by me knows that I've got probably, I probably have seven, uh, 30 packs of HAMS by me right now. [laughs] Because it could be a long day sometimes and you wanna socialize- Yeah...
9:05
so I'll grab a HAMS, but I have had very, very, very few, uh, good session IPAs. So this one is, um, very similar to, the grain bill is very similar to what we typically do. It's got some oats in it.
9:22
It's about 6%, 5.9, 6%. It has, the hop blend is, uh, the Pink Boots hop blend, so it's El Dorado, Laurel, Azacca, and Idaho Gem, which were the fir- the four that they put together- Man.
9:40
Wow... at the, uh, GBF in, uh, last fall. And so, I mean, it's, it's, it's a, it's a nice sessionable beer. It's probably got a little bit...
9:53
I, I guess it's not as bitter as I thought it was when I initially brought it out. It's delicious. Yeah, it's, it's a solid, solid beer. It's, it's a solid beer for sure, yeah.
9:59
And the thing is, is that, you know, you're, you're also, you know, at least a dollar out of every four-pack is going back to them. Um- Fantastic... we have, we, we've got, we got some, uh, corporate sponsors.
10:14
Al Jan from, um, Oak Creek provided the cans and the labels, and, uh, Malt Europe on the south side. We used, used to be Freidt Malt down there on 43rd. Yep, yep.
10:24
Um, they provided the, um, all the, uh, grain, and Lakefront, the yeast, and we provided the, uh, we paid for the hops. And it was really a fun day. It was March 8th- Okay... I think.
10:39
March 8th or Mar- March 9th, and after that was when the shit hit the fan. [laughs] So we got, we got this, you know, kind of right in. Just last minute. Yeah. Um, so it was fun. It was a fun day. It's a fun event.
10:50
It's a great, great cause. Can, can this be had somewhere? Where can we get this at? Um, at this point there's a few places that are... Well, you know, you can't get it on tap anywhere- Right, right...
11:00
we don't do tap here. Yeah, right, right, right. But at this point, yeah, I think Discount has some. I think Ray's has some. There's a few odds and ends of places that have some cans.
11:08
Otherwise, you can come to the taproom and get it. Right. We are gonna do another, uh, canning run in the next couple of weeks, and we're gonna have some more stuff out there. So it should...
11:17
And it's, it's actually in Green Bay. It's in Madison as well. And when are you open for doing your, your hours currently during this situation? Uh, you make me think now. [laughs] Yep.
11:29
Um, okay, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 4:00 to 7:00. Uh, Saturday and Sunday, noon until 4:00. We're closed for Easter this, uh, year. Um, I don't really know why we close for Easter, but- [laughs]...
11:46
uh, it's- And, and it's basically you and- Didn't you just talk earlier about Voice of Christian Youth and you're wondering why you're closed on Easter? [laughs] Uh, I don't really practice anymore. Yeah.
11:57
Um- Tim was relating to us his, uh, previous radio experience- Yeah... in his early youth at the- Sorry, I'm throw- yeah, I threw that in later... Voice of Christian Youth radio station.
12:06
Yes, that's where you- But okay, I- Yeah... that's where he practiced those- I am a, um-... dulcet tones you're hearing, so you can s- I got a r- He's got a, he's got a radio voice already... what I... Yeah, he does.
12:14
I'm, I'm what you call a recovering Catholic person. A recovering Catholic. Yeah, you were the competition. You know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that happens. We were, we were basically Baptist, which are, and which is-
12:24
I don't know. They're just like Catholics but meaner, [laughs] you know? Okay. And more southern mostly. Um, we were Northern Baptist though. Okay.
12:32
So there's a difference because, um, Southern Baptists are actually kind of fun with the- With all the singing and the carrying on and the- Speaking in tongues once in a while. Sure, sure. You know, that's all kind of...
12:42
The music is great. I love Southern gospel music. Mm-hmm. You know? In fact- Absolutely. Sure. Because it's good. Yeah. Yep, we'll have to talk about my family history sometime. They settled- [laughs]...
12:51
in Utah, so that should give you an idea about- Ooh. [laughs]... what's, what that's like [laughs] What that was. That ex- that explains the beard, right?
12:56
[laughs] [laughs] Hey, I- Well, that is a pretty freaking fantastic beard... my, my, uh, my grandfather got excommunicated or kicked out or summarily, uh- Mm... released from his obligations- Mm... or whatever it was, so
13:08
didn't have to be a practicing, uh, Mormon, but it, it is an interesting history and, uh- It's fascinating...
13:14
if you wanna know a- about, well, if I wanted to know, I, which I do, about my family, because it was pretty ingrained in the early part of the church, it's easy to go find out about it, 'cause they're pretty good at that kind of lineage business.
13:26
Yeah. What with believing you, you know, your afterlife is carrying on what happened here and all that good stuff, so. Right. But don't they have, like, their own planet? Uh, I don't know.
13:35
That's, uh, not as far as I know. That might be- You know, and there's- They want their own freaking planet... and there's different, there's different versions of it too.
13:41
There's the, the FDS, FDLS or whatever the- Mm... the LDS, and there's, there's different sects and different- Magic Skivvies... versions. Yeah.
13:49
Now I'm not, I'm not an expert on the church- Magic Skivvies is somewhere in there... by any means, just my family's history within it, basically. So. I ne- had no idea about this- Planet... this planet.
13:58
I, I might be in on that. That sounds cool. I know. Uh-huh. I mean, you know, come on that, that, that's kind of believable as the afterlife.
14:03
Well, if Marie Osmond's gonna be there, I'd, you know- Well, yeah, there you go. See? I, I might go visit. I, I'd go visit Marie Osmond. Well, Marie, let's go.
14:10
Yeah, that'd be- Well, Donny and Marie, what was that song they did? Until the 12th of never. Oh, no. And that's a long, long time. [laughs] I can't do the Marie part, though. [laughs] Or was that the Marie part?
14:24
[laughs] [laughs] I just wanted to be Jimmy, baby. Ah. Little Jimmy Osmond. He was such a cute little f- little guy there. Sort of the, sort of the,
14:34
I don't know what you'd call, the yin to, uh, Michael Jackson's yang at that time. [laughs] Mm. Right on. Right on. So, um- So we have not talked about riding at all or s- We did some...
14:45
well, a little bit, but- But that's not what we do here really. [laughs] No, no, it's not always. [laughs] You know? All right. So- A bit of the underpinnings... as, I have, so besides,
14:55
we've, we've been out riding-riding outside, but- Yeah... have you guys done any kind of virtual, any virtual stuff? Virtual riding or
15:03
like, I would consider listening to Kim West in the morning kind of a virtual thing since he's doing a live thing on Facebook.
15:09
Yeah, he could- You know, it's like, well, you gotta kinda be inside and work from home now and sort of, uh, JK's got... Tell, tell us about your setup 'cause [laughs] I think it's pretty, it's pretty good.
15:20
[laughs] How he, how he's positioned himself- Yeah... in his, uh, working environment. Well, yeah, I, I have the dining room table where I have my workstation. Slightly askew.
15:31
I have to pull the, the, the dining room table a little bit closer to the living room to get the good line of sight for the TV, which will have something on- [laughs]...
15:40
either the Star War or the Marvel Cinematic Universe in order because why not? Just kind of background- Yeah, exactly. Something there-... chaff...
15:48
or like the 10-hour, you know, fireplace just to set the mood, listen to MSC on the Spy speaker- Spy By... behind me. I got my, uh, turntable on the other side if I really wanna, like- Not throw a seventh... work.
16:03
[laughs] Work. 'Cause then I'll just be, like, thinking of what I'm gonna put on next. [laughs] It's, it's, it's, it's the DJ in you, baby. Yeah, I feel you. Let's talk about vinyl.
16:11
But it just, it, it's, it's just a nice, it's a nice setup, you know. I mean, I, you know, it could be so much worse, but- True that. Yeah, and you're working. Get a m- yeah, and you got, yeah.
16:23
You know, I'm doing what I was doing at work- Right... just I have better- That's-... views. Yeah. You know? And sounds.
16:30
And I don't have to sit there with l- little damn earbuds, so I'm not, eh, polluting the air- I have-... of the office and blah, blah, blah. It's like- I get to be-... "Oh, gee, why don't you wanna hear my good music?"
16:40
... I could be chilling at home and all of a sudden my dog runs up as I'm in the middle of a call and, like, jumps in my lap. [laughs] What happened to the secret door- And I, "Oh, well, I, oh, well-...
16:48
so the dog can't get through?... I'm, I'm working on that door. The door ain't there yet. Mm-hmm. But, you know, so in the meantime, 70 pounds of love comes running at you like a freight train.
16:56
That's a big dog you got there. She's a big dog, yeah. She, she loves to... And you know, so it's, it's kind of fun because- Yeah...
17:04
I will tell people because I'm working remotely for this medical facility, I'm like, "Look, occasionally my dog might run in here." [laughs] I'd have, yeah. You know, it's like- I actually had to do a-...
17:14
you know, it happens. And so you gotta deal with it... a Zoom call or- Yeah... Microsoft Team or whatever it was. Not trying to product place or anything. Yeah, that's how it works.
17:24
Um- [laughs] Right now that's what you're having to do. Well, I, I just can't even remember what the hell they are, but it was like, oh, okay, doing that.
17:29
I'm like, "Hey, sorry, my fricking bobcat's gonna, like, jump in the frame at some point in time or I'm gonna, like, scream at it." Which is, you know, more interaction than I really have with my c-
17:41
like, coworker when I'm terrestrially at work. [laughs] Yeah, exactly. It's like I have to fuck around with this little bastard all the day long.
17:48
[laughs] To- Tony and I were telecommuting up in Pembine for years, um, since, um, '99. It's perfect.
17:56
So we, yeah, I, when we first moved up there and I was building the house, we have a log house up there and I, um, you know, cut down the trees and peeled them and all that kind of shit. Jesus. And, uh- Nice... yeah.
18:07
And, uh, so while b- while I was building it, we were living in a 28-foot, uh, travel trailer out in the back of the outhouse.
18:15
[laughs] And we were actually, um, working for a human resource consulting company at the same time. So you talk about having dogs around. [laughs] We had, we had 23 dogs. Yeah. Holy mackerel.
18:26
We had a sled dog kennel and stuff. [laughs] It was great. It, it was just fantastic So we're all, you know, the- That's just fantastic...
18:32
what, what you guys are going through now, going at home, eh, we did it all the time. Right, right. Yeah. Back in, back in the day. I, I love it. Back in the day. Yeah, I'm not, I- [laughs] I love hanging out at home.
18:38
Yeah. I think it's fantastic, you know? The other, Monday- And, and I'm an only child- All right. All right... so I've had training on the- Yeah... I can occupy my time.
18:46
[laughs] So, you know- Just put you in front of the TV and just say, "Here, here's a beer, and shut up"... you know, I'm, I'm in the middle of work on Monday and I go upstairs for lunch from my basement to my...
18:55
And, um, my wife is pulling out a full rack of barbecued ribs- Nice... for lunch. For lunch? With mashed potatoes- She's trying to do you in... and, like, peas. She's trying to, she's trying to kill you, dude.
19:08
I was like- Kill you dead... I'm like, "Oh my God, this is, like, lunch?" I'm not sure mashed potatoes are the best combination with ribs. I'm gonna say that you should have- Ah, really?...
19:18
you should have red potatoes that you roast, and then when you take- I like chips... you know, you know- That works, too... roast them, put them with some, uh, garlic and some, um, olive oil.
19:27
Well, these had a lot of garlic in them. Yeah. And lots of olive oil. Yeah. But I do, yeah, I do like a rib done that way, or a purple. Yeah. But yeah, yeah, all right. All right, Tony. Tony, all right.
19:38
But it was Monday. Monday- Yeah... for lunch and a rack of ribs comes out. There are advantages [laughs] right now- Yeah, I was-... to being confined at home with my wife...
19:48
I was tempted to fire the grill up, uh, yesterday early, but- It was a nice day out... then cycling had to intrude. And hail. Hail happened yesterday while we were cycling. Yeah. Yeah, I heard that. Yeah. I felt that.
20:00
Yeah. [laughs] I, I threw one at JK and he tried to catch it and it hurt his little, little hand. It did. Yeah, there was, that was pretty serious. It was so short, too. Oh, yeah.
20:10
The water going past, like, here in your place, 'cause I ran across to, to Sunrise, was like- Really?... you know, halfway into the street. It's like, wow, this ca- happened like that and it was gone like that.
20:20
And we kept going, "Ah, it's gonna go north of us," which we were south of here by a mile. All right, we did that. And we didn't get super hammered, but we did get the hail. Hmm.
20:28
But I, you could tell that it was, like, y- we were just on the edge of getting really wet, really, really- Oh. Oh, yeah... really, really wet. [laughs] Well, yeah. And we, we still got snow on the ground up north.
20:37
You know, not everywhere, but, you know, if you're out in the woods and s- and stuff, in certain spots- Mm-hmm... there's still, you know, eight, 10 inches of snow on the ground. So Pembine is, uh- Where?...
20:46
I'm not exactly, is it in, uh, Bayfield County? No, it's straight north. Oh, okay. Straight, straight north- Okay... in Marinette County. So- Gotcha...
20:53
if you, uh, went, you know, three hours, three and e- three hours and 15 minutes, go seven over, you know? Uh, don't stop to pee or anything. [laughs] Do you get to the red road up there still? Is there- The red road?
21:05
We used to go up to, um, Houghton in Michigan, so on the way up there, there's a spot where one of the counties goes from blacktop to the road being somewhat of a red, uh, composite that's some kind of asphalt.
21:17
But you could tell you're getting close 'cause the road turns red and it's- Well, that's because- You're like, m- that's when you can crack a beer in the car. Wait, that was back in the old days though.
21:25
[laughs] That's not current, no. No, no- But that was-... no roadies are allowed... that was a good hour from Houghton- Yeah. Not good... or something like that. [laughs] Um, that's, that, you're in Iron County. Oh.
21:34
So you, so you got- Well, that makes sense...
21:35
yeah, you g- you're up, that's 'cause they have all the, uh, that, and then you'll, you are right though, 'cause all the gravel that they're getting from the gravel pits have got a lot of iron in it, so the iron rusts, and so that's why it gets, everything is red.
21:46
Copy that. Well, that makes much more sense than what I was thinking, was that they kept killing people and burying them in the road. [laughs] All right. Were you- The streets are run red- Did you grow up there?...
21:54
with the blood of my enemies. [laughs] Or- I, I grew up, uh, kind of half in Milwaukee and half in northern Wisconsin. Okay. But my, my dad cut pulp wood and, um, so we were out in the woods all the time.
22:05
I can, uh, tell you stories about stuff, you know. No dead bodies or anything like that. Oh. Damn it. You know. Well, then why tell stories? Um, a lot of drinking going on, you know? Oh, okay. Tell stories.
22:16
Chainsaws and getting hurt. You still have all your digits though, no? Yeah. I do, but I do have a few, uh, cuts on my hand. A few little nicks here and there. Divots and digits. Yeah.
22:28
Any, uh, any crazy mishaps since you've started the brewery that's, like, funny? Here? So I was making a... I wanted to make a beer with rye and oats in it,
22:43
and one of the things when you're working with some of these different types of grains is they've got a lot of gluten.
22:51
And gluten is basically kind of the slimy stuff when you make a bowl of oatmeal and you pick it up and it's kinda like stretches, that's gluten. And oats have a lot of that, rye has even more. It's very thick- Hmm...
23:04
very oily. And so I kind of overdid the amount of rye and oat that I had in there, and what happens is that you cannot actually drain any of the grain, I mean any of the water off of there, the wort.
23:19
It won't, won't come through? So, nope, won't come through because it just becomes a big pile of snot. Oh.
23:24
So I, I basically what I, I had to open up the, um, the mash tun and I had like 1,100 pounds of this goo- This-... all over the floor. [laughs] Was it, was it like ectoplasm? Uh, yes. You've been slimed.
23:38
It was very much like, it was very much like slime. [laughs] Yeah? And so we had to sit there and just, you know- He knows it... uh, that became, uh, milorganite I believe- Mm-hmm... is what happened with that.
23:49
[laughs] Yeah. Wow. Wow. Well, that's, uh, a lesson learned then, huh? How was the beer? Eh, no, I, I don't, no, we didn't get any beer out of it. Oh, really? We had no beer at all. You, you, you had to lose it all.
23:58
Dump, dumped the whole goddamn thing. Oh, man. Oh, shit. Eh, you know. It happens. So, um, are you, are you guys considered an essential business?
24:08
Uh- Or is it more the takeout portion because of the licensing and whatnot? There, there's two portions of what we do.
24:15
One is the wholesale side, which is, uh, regulated by Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection.
24:23
So on the, so that means when I'm manufacturing beer in the back, I could have 75 people working back there right now because that's considered, um, essential and we have to do what we do.
24:36
Well, I don't have 75 people back there- No... but it's just, it's, it's an example There's, like, 62. [laughs] Yeah.
24:42
And then in the tap room, everything is all carry-out, so, um, because that's regulated by the Department of Revenue.
24:49
And so it's kinda weird because you've got two different, um, entities that kinda regulate what you can do. Um, so
24:58
like tomorrow we'll do some, some canning, so I'll have some people come in to, to make sure that gets done. Otherwise, in wh- where we're at right now, it's just me and Tony, um- Right... selling cans.
25:11
'Cause, you know, I mean, half the time, I mean, so we play a lot of cribbage and, um- Any Mummady Peg? Um, not as far as I know. It's a knife game. Oh, no. No, no, no.
25:22
[laughs] Uh, and I have a puzzle I've been working on for a while.
25:25
I thought that would explain the nicks on your fingers, 'cause- No, that's just all the things I- [laughs] You know, it's just chainsaws and stuff like that. Um, drawknives. But no, so, you know, we're...
25:36
It's, it's actually been... I'm, it's, I'm not gonna tell you it's been great, but it's been a- better than I expected.
25:43
You know, we've had a lot of people who come in, you know, buy one or two and, um, and that, that helps a lot. Um,
25:50
I, I think that, y- there's been some people who are like, "You know, if things continue like this, we're gonna be done, you know, pretty quick." Uh, we're, we're gonna be here. We're, I d- I, I really doubt that...
26:01
We're gonna get through this. You know, I don't think there's any problem with that. [laughs] We better...
26:06
And I c- because I think one of the things about having your own business, one of the most important skills that you have to have, I don't know if it's a skill, but maybe it's a trait, and that's being resilient.
26:16
Because there's always gonna be something that happens that's gonna be...
26:20
It's gonna knock you on your ass, and you can either get knocked on your ass and go home and cry, or you can get back up and keep on working at it. Well, that's kinda w- we're, we're more of the we're gonna go...
26:30
We may go home and cry, but then we're gonna get back- [laughs]... a- and get back to work. Tim, your beer's always gonna be seeked. I mean, it's- Well, thank you... I mean, yeah, you, you are not going anywhere.
26:42
We're gonna make damn sure of it. [laughs] I hope... We're gonna, yeah, we're gonna- [laughs] If we, if we have to support you, damn it, we'll be over there every day. Y- yeah.
26:48
Yeah, b- I mean, the bikes, you know- No, yeah, it's, it's fantastic. I mean, kudos to you... being a, being a bike shop, we're a, we're an essential business to keep people rolling.
26:54
It's, it, it's kinda interesting because I'm not really allowing most people in the shop unless I have a previous relationship with them and kind of have a trust, you know, thing.
27:04
I have to talk to people out on the sidewalk, which is kinda interesting on Locust Street, you know? That said, the traffic is way down. Yes, it is. So that is- An amazing thing...
27:13
that's the most beautiful thing that's happened about this whole situation is the traffic out there and the jackassery is at an all-time low. Mm-hmm. I agree with that 100%. [laughs] That's amazing.
27:22
Yeah, nobody's crashed into the building this week. Yeah. Nobody's taken out the, uh, the signpost this week. I walked across the street without any hesitation. At 5:00 PM in the afternoon.
27:31
Yeah, it was like this is unbelievable that there is, you know... Yeah, there are still a few cars. Um, but wow. Wow. The spacing is- So- There's a, a definitive spacing...
27:44
no, I also, dude, I, I also s- I've seen three people run this red light at, uh, Fratney. That's unfortunate. And, and literally, like, laissez-faire.
27:53
Like, they looked, they slowed down, they looked, there was no one coming, and they blew through it. It wasn't like, "Oh, I screwed up and didn't realize it was red." Mm-hmm. It was, "I'm blowing this light."
28:06
And, you know, I think there's gonna be a little bit of that out there as things progress, but still, it was like if you're on your bike, be careful. [laughs] Yeah. Be safe. You know, look Don't go where the cars are.
28:18
That's basically my motto. Yeah, yeah. I tend to ride in, in places where there are no cars, alleys and- I was coming home from a ride... paths and woods and things. Yeah. [laughs] But it is, y- you gotta be careful.
28:30
I mean, at lights is what I'm saying. Yeah. It's like you, you don't necessarily... [laughs] You, you can't assure someone's gonna stop.
28:36
You've gotta be r- you know, ready to realize that right now people could think that is an option. Right on, right on. Well, I think that, uh, kind of about wraps it up. Tim, thanks very much for joining us- Yeah...
28:50
uh, and chatting bullshittery here at the old, uh, Full Spectrum Cycling thing- Right, right... that we do here every Wednesday. This was pretty normal out of you, you know? [laughs] Well. Yeah, man.
29:02
Things will get back to normal. Well, it's not like we won't have you on again.
29:05
I think, uh, when it gets a little warmer outside and the, uh, the danger of the, the, the current situation goes away, we'll probably do some of these from out on the old, uh, fire patio over there at, uh- Yeah.
29:15
Oh, yeah... at your place. That'd be better. You can sit right out there with... I mean, this is a totally portable rig if we wanna make it that way, so.
29:21
Could we- This thing and your, and your- Could, could we do it on bikes? Possibly. We'd have to go wireless probably. I could do that. I don't know if I can...
29:28
[laughs] But the, if you have to keep the headphone cables, like- [laughs]... in the right... That'd be kinda fun. We could do that. It'd be a blast. Yeah. That's part of the challenge.
29:36
Just take out people on the way down the path. Yeah, right. Who cares about them? Yeah, just co- like coming in like the, uh- Come on. It should be r-... like the Tour de France guys, lighting cigarettes for each other.
29:44
Oh. Yeah. Just like pour on, pour a breast. Pour a breast. You know? [laughs] I d- did, did you watch, uh, Kim's show today at all? I- Only tuned in for a second...
29:51
d- so they, so they had a discussion about these people that are doing yoga as a big thing to do now when you're in your house, and maybe you're a yoga instructor and you can't do your classes, so you're doing them virtually and you're doing your things.
30:02
And it's like can you do the handstand and, and remove your T-shirt or remove your tights or something?
30:08
And Kim was talking about how Tour de France riders, not only can they, you know, make water anytime they want, but they can ride with one leg, pull their bibs off and stuff, and it's just like they're on their bikes for eight hours a day.
30:20
They can pretty much do anything that's required- On their bike... on the bike. [laughs] So I thought that was kinda interesting. Yeah, yeah. But anyway. I'd rather be dead.
30:28
I guess we'll, I guess we'll do this next week if, if people keep listening to the show, I guess we'll- What show is this? 55? Yeah. Oh. Our one listener called, uh, last week and said, "Keep doing it, guys."
30:38
So- Ah, cool... that, that's what we're gonna do. [laughs] All right, everybody. Peace out. Yeah. Is n- is next week your birthday? No. Maybe.
30:47
[upbeat music] [laughs] We are sorry, but the show has ended.
31:24
Goodbye. [beep]
