- 1:55But, as I said, cosplay Chris joins me this week to discuss
- 1:57Radioactive Man Go. We'll be back next week for another episode of season nineteen,
- 2:01but for now and Dwano, hope you enjoyed my chat here discussing Radioactive
- 2:06Man with the legendary Kysla Chris. But how was New York? I saw
- 2:15that you did a movie tour and you did all the touristy stuff. What
- 2:17did you get up to besides meaning Zach of course. Yeah, so I
- 2:21did the press junket for everyone in part two and like that film was getting
- 2:24thrashed unfortunately, But I'm a big fan of his work, especially with like
- 2:30Batman and all that stuff, so it was great, but it went too
- 2:34quick, man. I was there for four nights and then had to fly
- 2:36back, so the jet lag was bad. It was really bad, and
- 2:40I was trying to sleep on the plane coming home, and it's cool,
- 2:44like it's not a pay gig, but they cover flight. Accommodation was business
- 2:47class with Cathay Pacific, which is great. And coming home, I'm like,
- 2:51all right, got the flatbed, I'm going to sleep and I'll be
- 2:53fine. I'll listen to some four fingered discount. I'm trying to listen to
- 2:57you guys. And we had the worst turbulence and I'm like, this is
- 3:00awful. So I'm like, screw it. I'm just gonna stay up and
- 3:04just listen to you guys. So these guys usually put me to sleep.
- 3:07Why is it not working this time? Ah? Man? You were?
- 3:10You were also you had an episode with the guy that had the big collection.
- 3:15You had a few animation cells and Michael, I remember I was drifting
- 3:19in and out of that one because it was just like, you guys just
- 3:21talk shop and shit, it's great. Well that's what I try to do
- 3:24with Guess and going. I just we recorded an episode yesterday. We just
- 3:27started season nineteen, and we sort of discussed about interviewing and I feel like
- 3:30when you're interviewing, because you interview as well. You don't interview, you
- 3:35just chat. I think that's the best way to do it. Yeah,
- 3:37because and I said, I love that moment where you realize with like a
- 3:40big name guest or whatever, where you realize, oh shit, you've asked
- 3:43me a question. You can tell they've never been asked before. Yeah.
- 3:46Yeah. When you stump them, they're like, oh good one, You're
- 3:49like, yeah, fuck, because sometimes they use our good question as a
- 3:52way to sort of de stall time. But you can tell when they say
- 3:54good question, when they actually meant that's a good question. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:58yeah exactly, and they give you little pat on the back. What
- 4:01landmarks did you see? Have you been to New York before this trip?
- 4:04That was my fourth time. Yeah, So my dad used to work for
- 4:08Corners and I used to work for Corners too before I well, during when
- 4:11I started doing all this. So I went there when I was a kid,
- 4:15then went there in my twenties two more times. But yeah, like
- 4:18did the home alone hotel like for av log on my second channel. Then
- 4:24we did like Central Park and just Time Square all the touristy stuff, and
- 4:29again, like we had so much stuff to do activities wise. With Netflix,
- 4:31it was on behalf of Netflix Australia, so you like we had like
- 4:35one day to like do all touristy stuff and have time to ourself. Apart
- 4:40from that, we were just on the on the go the whole time.
- 4:43Man. So like we had the press junk at the screening like the premiere
- 4:46and then before you know, it was time to fly home. So they
- 4:49contact you say we're going to pay for your flight's accommodation, all that good
- 4:53stuff. But you've got to do what they tell you to do when you
- 4:55get that kind of thing a sort of so like last year I did Rebel
- 4:59Moon Part one and that was in Japan, so it's the exact same thing,
- 5:01like, hey, we want you to come back for part two.
- 5:02We're going to do it in New York this time. Like they do have
- 5:05a schedule, but because they're not paying you, they don't expect a certain
- 5:12thing socials wise, like in terms of posting, and we want, you
- 5:15know, three stories and one main newsfeed post if that makes sense. If
- 5:19they are paying you, then they'll probably give you a list of what they
- 5:23want, hashtags all that stuff, like deliverables and like I review. I've
- 5:30got my main channel causplay Chris, and then I've got just Chris Stanley,
- 5:31which is just movie reviews and all that. And I always try to be
- 5:34honest, even though because tomorrow night my fiance and I have the premiere of
- 5:39Furiosa here in Sydney, so like Hamsworth, George Miller and all that are
- 5:44going to be there. But you know, I still will give an honest
- 5:46opinion even though you get an invite, I still think you need that healthy
- 5:50balance, if that makes sense. Is there a fear though, of giving
- 5:53a bad review that you might not get invited back? Or have you found
- 5:57it that doesn't really matter? If anything, that's not my problem. It's
- 6:01like you guys have to understand it's subjective. I can still have an opinion.
- 6:05Just because you've gifted me something doesn't mean I have to abide by the
- 6:09rules. And when I do my reviews, if something's negative, I'm not
- 6:12bashing it. I just try and be like this didn't work for me,
- 6:15and I'm not like this is shit, the person shit, this is awful.
- 6:18It's just like, hey, this didn't work for me. So you
- 6:23know, I always try and have a fair kind of balanced opinion. But
- 6:26at the same time, there's no such thing as a perfect movie man.
- 6:29So yeah, I used to be a lot more scared of doing that,
- 6:31but now I find your audience respects you a lot more. If you're like,
- 6:35hey, I did get invited, but this still isn't a perfect movie,
- 6:40but you'd be polite about it. You're like, these were just my
- 6:42negatives. These are my gripes, but overall, you know, it's still
- 6:45pretty damn good. So I think that needs to be addressed a lot more
- 6:48these days instead of just pandering because you got an invite. Like the buzzword
- 6:54these days is shill. Everyone thinks you're a chill. Well, they're your
- 6:58thoughts. What you just described heed to describe those films, was that your
- 7:00thoughts walking out of the Simpsons movie, because I think that's how most Simpsons
- 7:02fans felt. It's like there were negatives. I mean, it was good,
- 7:05but there's a lot of things I would have probably wish were a bit
- 7:09better. Yeah, it was kind of It was like when when it finished,
- 7:13because it was a big deal. We were in year we just graduate,
- 7:15so it was two thousand and seven when it came out. Yeah,
- 7:17yeah, so I graduate. I finished you twelve or two thousand and six.
- 7:19I think we were about the same age. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:21I graduated two thousand and six, and I remember when the credits rolled,
- 7:26it was like that episode Itching Scratchy and Poochie's Home is like, well,
- 7:30what did everyone think? It was? Like, it was actually pretty
- 7:36good for how the series was starting to sort of decline and kind of go
- 7:41downhill in terms of like not not to say it was like getting bad,
- 7:45but it just wasn't what it was in the golden era. And I remember
- 7:47back remember the Cheese TV days. Of course it I'm the guy that helped
- 7:50relaunch the Chefs TV social medias with Jayden Ryan Oh christ will be all right,
- 7:55yeah, yes, so it's safe to say you Cheese TV. Yeah.
- 7:59I remember like the Boys announced it on Chief TV that a movie was
- 8:03being made, and then Disney Adventures would been like, yeah, movie's happening.
- 8:07I'm like, guys, it feels like it's been like ten years everyone's
- 8:09been saying a movie's happening. Then it finally came out. I'm like,
- 8:13I think that's the best Simpsons movie we could get in the in the age
- 8:18we are in now, like two thousand and seven. I think that's the
- 8:20best we can get, and I actually really liked it. Look, it
- 8:26could have been so much more worse, but I'm glad they brought back the
- 8:28older riders for it, and I think that's why it was pretty decent.
- 8:33I think if they remade, if they've made a second one, I think
- 8:35now they would pander more to the hardcore fans of like the Golden Era,
- 8:39more so because I think they've now finally acknowledged and accepted. Okay, I
- 8:43mean the first ten years we're the best, and I think though in that
- 8:46weird period of going we're still good. We're still good and trying to sort
- 8:50of just be there who they were at that point. Now, I feel
- 8:52like a new movie would be more pandering to what we grew up on and
- 8:58they My big thing was I wish I had a back Hank Scorpio as the
- 9:01villain because he had the same voice actor. Yeah, I say it's the
- 9:05same voice actor the guy that voices Marlon is it Marlin Broding Nemo Brooks?
- 9:11Yeah? Yeah, Like can you imagine if they brought back Conan to co
- 9:15write it, and is John Schwartzwelder is still alive. He's still alive.
- 9:20Yeah, I don't think he waits for the show anymore though. No,
- 9:22he's like I picture him being like mister Burns when he's got the casino and
- 9:26he's got the beard and he's on the type rider with the long fingernails.
- 9:31Do you know that he bought a booth from the diner that he used to
- 9:33go to the right Simpsons and put it in his house so that he can
- 9:37feel like he was in his little zone. That's so cool. I remember
- 9:39that. My me and my two best mates talk about that all the time.
- 9:43And one of my mates, Luke, who I'm getting married next week
- 9:48and he's on our groomsman and thanks Man. Yeah, Luke told me about
- 9:52that. He's like, yeah, he used to go on that diner every
- 9:54day chain smoke. And then I think that were they getting rid of the
- 9:58booth or they were refurbishing the din. I'm not sure, but all I
- 10:01know is that he took it to his house and I thought, that's so
- 10:03fucking awesome. It's so good. I love that. Do you have anything
- 10:07from your childhood for me? Though? And I never got my hands and
- 10:11I'm still so sad and bitter about it to this day. But there was
- 10:13a time where we have time zone. It's now called laser Quest or something
- 10:16here in Jalyn, but we had time zone right the arcade and they had
- 10:20the Simpson's Arcade machine there, and it was always the same machine there forever,
- 10:24forever, and then just sort of disappeared one day and I was like,
- 10:26oh, man, I used to spend so many hours of my childhood
- 10:28playing his machine. And then I went to a mate store who was had
- 10:33like a pop culture T shirt store, and I went there and he had
- 10:35the machine. He bought it from Times and they didn't want it anymore,
- 10:39and I said how much do you want for it? He goes eight hundred.
- 10:41I said, all right, cool, let me just go talk to
- 10:43my wife about it. And see, I wanted to own kind of like
- 10:45George and Sidefad the Froggy Machine. I wanted to own the original Arcade that
- 10:48I actually used to play, right, And I went back there two days
- 10:50later he sold it to somebody else. He goes, oh, well,
- 10:52I didn't know if you're going to come back all night, and I just
- 10:54sold it. I was like, man, I spent the whole weekend begging
- 10:56to my wife. She finally agreed to it. Now it's not there,
- 11:01Oh damn. I just love to I would love to own the actual Simpsons
- 11:05Arkae machine that I played when I was a kid, you know. Yeah,
- 11:09yeah. We had Tilt at our local Westfield and they had an abundance
- 11:15of Simpson games. They had like pinball machine, so I had some other
- 11:18specialty ones and I always remember like the movie themed pinball machine or like arcade
- 11:24games. I remember the Simpsons the Adams Family pinball machine like from the movie
- 11:30Ye Star Trek was a big one fish tails Yeah yeah, yep, yep.
- 11:33But like I've I've got my Simpsons Issue one comic from when I was
- 11:39a kid, and yes it does smell like my grandpa and it comes with
- 11:43like the poster and everything. And then these two I repurchased off eBay.
- 11:48So this is issue forty eight and then issue fifty. And the reason why
- 11:52I rebrought these two is because, like it's nostalgia. But I remember my
- 11:56dad and I went on a road trip from Sydney up to the Gold Coast
- 11:58and I had these two issues and they kept me company the whole ride through
- 12:03and they were like the illustrations always great there's always something going on in each
- 12:07frame, and they got lost just throughout the years. And yeah, I
- 12:11found them on Eban. I just wanted to again, just that nostalgia and
- 12:13just was like that was a fun road trip with my dad and I and
- 12:16I read them now and I'm like, man, these still hold up.
- 12:18They're pretty good. Yeah. I feel the comics are so underappreciated because they
- 12:24just sort of pull the pin on them m. Yeah. Yeah, actually,
- 12:26especially the Halloween ones as well. You've read some of them now,
- 12:28an you think these are just they're just as good as the episodes. Yeah,
- 12:33I'm like, why did you make this a comic and not an episode?
- 12:37Yeah? There must have been a different staff or something. I'm thinking,
- 12:39how can these guys write good stories but the actual shows declining? Jesus,
- 12:45these are really good. I've got my whole collection down here. I'll
- 12:46try to show you. I'm not sure if you can see it. That's
- 12:50all my comics down there. They're are my records up. But I collect
- 12:54vinyl soundtracks. That's my thing. We all have a thing, right,
- 12:58hang on, you'll get a kick out it. Collect vinyl soundtracks too,
- 13:03But for like a night re olm Street, Robert England who signed to Chrism.
- 13:13He goes to Chris from DJ Freddy. That's so cool, I am,
- 13:18I've got that. But I've got like the re releases from Mondo.
- 13:20Yeah, I because the original one that's not from eighty four, that was
- 13:26a German release and I think eighty nine or ninety. But the OG one
- 13:30is like super hard to find. Before we were talking about the guest you
- 13:35had on who has the collection. He has the animation cells. And this
- 13:39is one thing I regret selling years and years ago. I bought an animation
- 13:43cell from the Lemon Tree episode and it's the very first frame when Bart's on
- 13:48the skateboard just cruising down the street before he finds the wet cement and it's
- 13:54it was, yeah, the first couple of frames in and it was signed
- 13:58by Nancy Cartright and like this is when I was still living at home and
- 14:03I was like strap for cash and I'm like I had it framed in UV
- 14:07glass and everything, and some bloke from the Blue Mountains came down and bought
- 14:11it who was a collector, and he was really sweet, he was really
- 14:13nice and excited about it. I'm like, man, I should have held
- 14:16onto that because it's those pivotal moments that make these cells more expensive, and
- 14:22obviously the more characters in it, like you've got the whole Simpsons family and
- 14:24one cell, like that's that's worth a motza. But because the Lemon Tree
- 14:30episode is so iconic, Yeah, I just that was the one that got
- 14:35away for me. Imagine owning this the cell of the lemon Face. That
- 14:39would be iconic. Yeah, that or shoe Colder boy. I think it
- 14:46all shake harder boy. Yes, I think the lemon Face would just be
- 14:52the best. Wh Who would have thought, you know, they made that
- 14:54episode like ninety five or something that twenty years later the lemon Face would become
- 14:58one of the most mean things of all time. You know, I still
- 15:03think one of the and like we're obviously touching on the episode, and I
- 15:07think it's one of the best memes every And I don't know if you saw
- 15:09it, so you know that have you been up all night eating cheese?
- 15:11Scene? Marge comes out and it's the goggles with rain years eyes in him,
- 15:16and she goes, have you been up all night doing nothing? And
- 15:18it's just the goggles staring at her. That's all that to me. We
- 15:24usually cover that favorite moments that to me is one of the most iconics Simpsons
- 15:28moments in general, just the real ascid. But I just thought the ah
- 15:33oh ah yet all this left of his undies, that just makes total sense
- 15:41exactly. Yeah, what would be your earliest memories of The Simpsons do you
- 15:46think? I? Dude, I honestly remember year two when I was in
- 15:50Grade two and coming home and like you know, like back in the day
- 15:56primary school, you're in your school uniform right until you have a shower before
- 15:58bed, Like you just come home, you're still in your uniform. I
- 16:02remember sitting like this close to the TV, eating dinner and watching The Simpsons.
- 16:07I was one of those kids that could watch The Simpsons and South Park
- 16:10when I was in primary school, so I'd like watch the episodes, especially
- 16:14South Park, come to school the next day and like fill the kids in
- 16:18on what happened, like the ones who couldn't watch it. So that was
- 16:22definitely my earliest memory. And I told my fiancee I was gonna tell this,
- 16:26so I'd come out with some crazy facts and my dad would be like,
- 16:32where did you learn that? I'm like the Simpsons, And Dad's like
- 16:34huh. So my fiance and I met on Tinder and like, we just
- 16:41talked for a bit, but then we stayed in touch on Instagram. And
- 16:42she'll contest this. In my bio had said I got most of my education
- 16:48from the Simpsons. That was my Tinder bio. So many of us who
- 16:49grew up in the nineties, it was like we learned so many pop culture
- 16:52references and actual facts and celebrities. Well, for example, Mickey Rooney.
- 16:56I had no idea who Micky Rooney was, but I learned who he was
- 16:59from the Sims. Neither exactly. I'm like, who's this old guy that's
- 17:04staying Jimminy Jillicus. But did you find what's the thing that you feel like
- 17:10you learnt from the Simpsons that still you used to this day? For me,
- 17:14I remember going to school and it's the episode Trios of Horror six,
- 17:18the three D one three D Homer and Frank draws the three D cube on
- 17:22the chop board with the two squares and he draws a little Homer in the
- 17:26middle. I went to school the next day and Drew's cube and the kids
- 17:29were just flabbergas and they could not believe how did you draw this three D
- 17:32thing. I was like, well, it's a little secret. It was
- 17:33the Simpsons, well one of the kids like whoa, well, slow down,
- 17:37egghead. And because of that that memory, I've always wanted to get
- 17:41that little scribble tattooed on me. So the plan is I'm going to go
- 17:45to America at some point in a couple of years. And I spoke to,
- 17:48oh shit, who's the David Silverman, the animator, David Silvman is
- 17:52gonna draw it on me, and then I'm gonna get a tattooed. Oh
- 17:56that is bad. That's yeah. I In terms of like what I learned,
- 18:02it was mostly like American history, like stuff that we wouldn't know here
- 18:07in Australia, but like it just translates to something different in America. But
- 18:11also you know, like you know American wars, presidents, stuff like that.
- 18:15And again just drop these like facts to my dad, like useless pub
- 18:21trivia, and Dad's like, wait, they wouldn't have taught you that in
- 18:23primary school. IM like no, no, no, no, watched it
- 18:26last night at the Samsons And Dad's just like, so wait, we're spending
- 18:29all this money on school for you and you're learning more from a crude TV
- 18:33show and I'm like, yeah, I was like, shit, okay,
- 18:37but yeah, just obscure things like that. And also, like you said,
- 18:41like celebrities and stuff like that. Yeah, just the most random things
- 18:47ever, and those are embedded in my brain more so than what I learned
- 18:52in school. Like I don't want to know about Pythagoras. I want to
- 18:56know more about Mickey Rooney exactly. Yeah. Yeah, I feel like The
- 18:59Simpsons introduced me to horror with the trios of horror episodes. Do you feel
- 19:03the same, Yeah, I yeah, I feel like because like I got
- 19:10into Freddy through like Freddy Krueger, Like through my mom. Mum would always
- 19:14tell me about Freddie. Then I go to the VHS store where my parents
- 19:15would go grocery shopping, and I'm like, I don't want to and They're
- 19:18like, well, go look in the video store and we'll come get you.
- 19:21That's what we all did. It was the fucking hangout. It was
- 19:23the best time of the week, getting a hangout in the video store.
- 19:26Yeah. Man, And like I've said this before another podcast. I don't
- 19:30know about you, but Australian VHS horror covers from like the eighties were hardcore.
- 19:33They didn't hold back. There were some horrific stuff on those covers.
- 19:38We always say the podcast you walk down the store as a kid, and
- 19:41it's like, I've never seen the movie, but I remember the cover.
- 19:45The cover was just just captured your imagination. You think, what the fuck
- 19:48is this movie about? But because the covers, because covers are a thing
- 19:51anymore, really are they? Because the physical media is dying and the poster
- 19:55art on streaming service is always changing. But I can remember, for example,
- 19:59Evil Dead too, that skull cover that's just embedded in my brain.
- 20:02Yes, yes, yes, yes, and like it had a human eye
- 20:06in it, and I'm like, oh, that's really like, hang on,
- 20:10here's one that'll take you back down memory lane. Hell Raiser. Yeah
- 20:15yeah, yeah, like the shit that's on the back of that one that
- 20:17Yeah, it's always like you'd see if I cover and go, this looks
- 20:19scary? Do I dare look at the back because the back's gonna be worse?
- 20:23Yeah? Yeah. Man. So I definitely think with Treehouse of Horror,
- 20:27especially the ones where they acknowledge like Freddie Jason Pinhead, like the Shinning
- 20:33episode where Moe's like the Guls and I a little concerned that the project isn't
- 20:37moving forward, and he's like, oh, I crying out loud, and
- 20:38then they come in and grab him and all that. And then I remember
- 20:42the couch gag with Freddy and Jason and they actually got Robert England in to
- 20:48do the voice, and I just kept playing that over and over, and
- 20:52we have the photos somewhere. The Nightmare and Evergreen Terrorist episode. I remember
- 20:56pausing because Dad takes I remember Paul and getting the old disposable camera and taking
- 21:03photos of the screen of Willy with the rake and the sweater, and like
- 21:07half the screen is black and you just see the bottom of Willy. So
- 21:15I'm a big wrestling fan right when I was a kid, and I thought
- 21:18that I would take photos of my little poloid whatever, not poloid, but
- 21:22just like wind up camera of the TV screen during a wrestling pay per view.
- 21:26You take photos and tell my friends that I went to the event.
- 21:29So I'm sitting there and fucking taking all these photos of the TV. Get
- 21:32them developed. I'm so exciting, tell my friends I went to the event.
- 21:33And they're all just blurry black half, you know, can't make out
- 21:37shit. And I'm like ah, man, I'm glad you I wasn't the
- 21:41only one. I love that. Just try and pull one over them.
- 21:45That's great. Yeah, the good old tube tellies man, and then the
- 21:52oh yeah you would like for probably for all the relics you've got, what's
- 21:56just good for old school video games? Yeah, and I remember when the
- 21:59DVD started to roll out, like obviously, when they started with season one
- 22:03in that gray box set. I always remember constantly going to Big w to
- 22:07see when they're on special and just buy them all up. And then I
- 22:11got to season seven and I couldn't find the regular box version. It was
- 22:15Marge's head and I'm like, okay, I'll grab this one. This is
- 22:21gonna do my OCD and I hate this and yeah, it's just the bane
- 22:26of my collecting existence. Well, I remember when they first released those,
- 22:30they were only available in the head shapes first, and then after all the
- 22:33outrage and people gone, they look stupid on my shelf, they re released
- 22:36them in the boxes. So us, being the fools we are, we
- 22:38then bought the second set of the exact same thing, but just because the
- 22:41cover looked better. Yeah. Yeah, and they rely on people like us
- 22:47because they're like regardless of how angry they are, they're still gonna buy it.
- 22:49Who cares. Yeah, I feel like a lot of outrage online is
- 22:52all fake. Anyway, do you get like comments on your videos of just
- 22:55fake outrage? Sometimes I do. I try to limit how often I look
- 23:00at comments on my videos, especially if I know it's going to be a
- 23:03topic that's going to stir people up. So, like I did my Rebel
- 23:06Moon Part two review. I gave it a three and a half out of
- 23:07five, I'm like, yeah, this is far from perfect, but like
- 23:11the end battle sequence I really liked. And anyway, everyone's blasting the film,
- 23:15so I haven't. I've left that video. I haven't gone to the
- 23:18comment section. I'm like, I'm good because a lot of people comment as
- 23:22if you are telling them how to feel. They don't realize that you're just
- 23:26telling them how you feel. And you know, movies are subjective. The
- 23:33Simpsons is subjective, you know, it's media is subjective. So it's okay
- 23:36to like something that some people just can't fathom them. They they go to
- 23:41the lowest common denominator and they'll be like, well, you know, your
- 23:44your eyebrows are weed, your noseweed or you know your parents are fuck because
- 23:47you've got that opinion. I'm like, what, Yeah, it's especially when
- 23:52it comes to like comic book films, man, like you got to you
- 23:56got to tread very carefully. You don't want to angry the crew. Well,
- 24:00I've learned, especially with The Simpsons, if you post anything that's post
- 24:03season ten, you're in trouble. Yeah, and especially like whether it be
- 24:07your page or like rock Bottom or Copyr Hypoglobal Mega Nat, like someone will
- 24:11post a meme. Actually I posted a photo so you know Universal Studios in
- 24:17Hollywood they've got the Simpsons land. Yeah, my mates and I went there
- 24:21twenty twelve and it's where the quickimart is and there's an illustration of Millhouse.
- 24:26I think he's like graffeiting or something on the side and anywhere me in front
- 24:30of him, and I'm yeah, and I'm facing him, and I kid
- 24:34you not the way it's framed up perfectly, it looks like Millhouse has cut
- 24:38my leg and he's performing fullatio on me. And we didn't mean to do
- 24:42that. I just got the they got my mates got the photo and I'm
- 24:45like, oh my god, it looks like Millhouse is going to town down
- 24:48there and I just posted it like as a laugh on one of the pages,
- 24:52and everyone was like saying, you know, Predator and all that,
- 24:55and I'm like, oh, okay, I got it. The no no,
- 24:59no, Chris Hands is going to show up in a man This isn't
- 25:00good. The thing is, so if you I don't know, it's just
- 25:06you post anything season ten. They just feel like you're opposed. Like are
- 25:10you just saying you're like the Simpons because you like the Simpson because you want
- 25:11to get in their goodlie souse. You got to a podcast, And I'm
- 25:14like, it's okay to like things post season ten. You do understand that,
- 25:17right, It's okay for people to like anything something that you don't like.
- 25:19That's what they can't seem to understand is just because you don't like it
- 25:23doesn't mean it's bad. It means that you don't like it. No,
- 25:27that's it. And I still haven't watched it. Yeah. Look, I
- 25:30don't watch much new Simpsons these days. It's more or less like just having
- 25:34the time to sit down and watch it. But I do want to watch
- 25:37the episode. I watched Simpson Theory break it Down the other day of the
- 25:41episode how Larry the Barfly died. Okay, yep, have you watched that
- 25:45episode yet? No? Is it available on Disney Plus yet or do you
- 25:49just pirate it? I don't know, man, Like I'm assuming it just
- 25:53went out live like on regular Telly over there. But yeah, she was
- 25:59brief breaking down that episode. I'm like, that actually sounds pretty well written.
- 26:04So I feel like I need to invest a bit of time and you
- 26:07know, playing catch up. But like, because I'm so narrow minded and
- 26:11a child of nostalgia from the nineties and stuff like that, and like it's
- 26:15my comfort food from like season four to season I actually go to twelve because
- 26:22I remember back in the day, we had the bootleg foxtail box with the
- 26:26Dodgy sim card you put in yeah, yeah, and every Saturday and Sunday,
- 26:33man from nine to twelve, Fox say the Simpsons Marathon, And like
- 26:37my ritual on Saturday morning was go to tennis halfway through the marathon and tennis
- 26:44was literally like a five minute walk down the road and then come back and
- 26:48catch the last episode before it hit midday. And then you know, the
- 26:51days just started and just like and then when the Olympics were on and they
- 26:56had that massive marathon Simpsons FanFest. Mate, one of the highlights of my
- 27:00childhood. Mate, that was like we were spoiled, absolutely spoil like you
- 27:06could just go away, do something, come back and just it's just plain.
- 27:10It was so good. I've still got VHS tapes of me recording that
- 27:15marathon. That's so good. Oh man, I remember the Oprah special and
- 27:22Homer's like upro oupro chat. Fuck man, I'm so glad you remember.
- 27:26We must have watched the same shit, because I've still got that Channel ten
- 27:30to a marathon on a Friday night in like nineteen ninety five, and I've
- 27:33still got the videotaped me recording it. And I was hosted by two people
- 27:36from Neighbors and that was sort of like the chief TV guys before this,
- 27:40right in between the episodes, and they aired that opera skit for the first
- 27:44time during that that marathon. So that's why you probably we probably watched it
- 27:48at the exact same time one hundred percent. Man, Yeah, I think
- 27:51so. Yeah, And oh man, what else was there? There was
- 27:53a few other spellers. Yeah, I remember the Oprah one because Dad taped
- 27:56that one for me. Oh do you remember when they were it was a
- 28:00big huha, and they're like, you know, r rated Simpsons. The
- 28:03one went Homer and Margin naked trying to get home. They edited at nine
- 28:07point thirty in stand of seven thirty. Yeah, yeah, And mom and
- 28:11dad were like, you can't watch that one. I'm like, come on,
- 28:14Lynn, please be a friend and you're mean and I'm like, come
- 28:17on, man, and you watch it. And he went, ah,
- 28:19it's actually not that bad at all. No, it wasn't. It was.
- 28:22It was good. It was a good episode, especially when Home is
- 28:25getting dragged up the glass. Yes, I remember they on the trailer for
- 28:30that, they had like when Noah in front of in the front of everybody
- 28:33at the football field and they're covering themselves, But on the ad it just
- 28:36had big sensored marks in front of it. I was like, holy shit,
- 28:37we gotta see him naked, but of course you don't. Yeah.
- 28:41Yeah. And then the Simpsons movie came out and we saw Bart's doodle.
- 28:47I'm like, what, I don't have to feel about that. I was
- 28:51like that, I feel a bit uncomfortable, like the whole I remember the
- 28:53whole audience in our cinema. It was a nervous laugh it's like, if
- 28:57you laugh at this, something's wrong with you. I remember, though,
- 29:00when the movie finished, I know you said, there was that sort of
- 29:03awkwardness of I think it was good, but I remember when I watched it
- 29:07for the first time, there were people standing up and applauding it. And
- 29:11I'm thinking, I'm not going to do that, But there were people applauding
- 29:15the movie. I think they just felt that they had to because it was
- 29:17the Simpsons and have just been lifelong fans, and we waited so long,
- 29:19that was the thing. We'd waited so long, hadn't we for that movie.
- 29:22Yeah, it just seemed like forever it was in development, in development,
- 29:26which it was like it was in development health for quite some time,
- 29:29because I think they went through a fair few writers, did they in a
- 29:33fair few iterations of the script? Is that correct? Yeah? It went
- 29:34fair a long time like that. I think that's why they brought in the
- 29:37originals in the end. I'm like, Ah, these guys seem to know
- 29:40what's up. They wrote the Golden ear. Let's just get those guys in.
- 29:42I mean, that's the smartest thing you can do, man, because
- 29:45now more so they're fully aware that the Golden Era will always be the best.
- 29:51That's why it's the Golden Era. But yeah, I think the jokes
- 29:53landed pretty well. I just like it's just little things that stick out to
- 29:59here that you know, you still it's just like, you know, I
- 30:00was elected to lead, not to read just President Schwartzenegger, and I don't
- 30:04know, just very very funny, like even like the whole Tom Hanks thing,
- 30:08you know, tussle my hair, mister Hanks. I feel like that
- 30:11movie was the first half an hour was really solid, and then appeared with
- 30:15the epiphany of Homer just sort of just dragged for me, and then when
- 30:19they finally got to Springfield, it became good again. So I feel like
- 30:22there's goes about ninety minutes. I feel it there's about fifty minutes of good
- 30:25quality content in there. Yeah. When he has the whole existential thing with
- 30:30the lady in the hut and all that, I'm like, yeah, okay,
- 30:33Like I kind of equate that to when he has the chili and he's
- 30:38high as a kite with the coyote. Yeah, I'm like, but that's
- 30:42because he had a chili. Like he's a bit crook, but he'll come
- 30:45good. Yeah, that's when it definitely did dip. But also I think
- 30:51it was very sweet when Marge leaves the tape for him and she says,
- 30:56you know, I tape this over our wedding thing, and I was like,
- 30:59oh, that really hit me in the fields. I'm like, I
- 31:02kind of haven't felt that way before whilst watching The Simpsons, and I'm like,
- 31:04that was some pretty good writing. I like that. Yeah, that
- 31:07was the first time I remember watching feeling genuine emotion, going oh shit,
- 31:12And you could feel it in the cinema too. Everyone was sort of going,
- 31:15oh man, you could sense the saddness in the room. Yeah,
- 31:18but something that's not sad. Radioactive Man, an episode that I chose for
- 31:22us to discuss because you know, you were you are you still Cosplay Chris
- 31:26or you are now Chris Stanley, what's the deal? So on? So
- 31:29I got the main YouTube channel Cosplay Chris, and I just changed my name
- 31:33on Instagram to kind of like broaden the horizon, so it's just Chris Stanley
- 31:36Official. But yeah, still Cosplay actually did a shoot yesterday as Christopher Reeve
- 31:40Superman, which is fun, but yeah, just try and like, so
- 31:44I should have like started the second channel ages Ago Man, like just keep
- 31:47the build videos separate from the talking videos with like movie reviews, entertainment news
- 31:51stuff like that. So yeah, like, this is definitely one of my
- 31:56favorite episodes because the idea of a beloved comic book character. It's like is
- 32:00if Batman was coming to shoot here in Sydney. That's a massive deal.
- 32:05And I think just everything that goes on in that episode is comedic genius.
- 32:10The way Springfield carries on knowing that Hollywood is coming to their town, just
- 32:15little things, the way Wigham and the mayor carry on, you know,
- 32:21it's just great. I feel like this is what would happen. Sydney's a
- 32:23big city. This is what would happen if Hollywood came to Geelong, smaller,
- 32:30smaller than Sydney. You know, this is like, holy shit,
- 32:31it's hollywoods coming. But I love the way they flipped the script here.
- 32:34What's the world to do with this? With the Hollywood guys being the good
- 32:37guys and Quimby and like Springfield being the villains. Essentially, Yes, that's
- 32:43correct. And also this was the first hang on, I've got my trivia
- 32:46here. This is the first episode to be digitally colored. Yeah, I've
- 32:51got that my notes too. I thought, I remember watching this as a
- 32:52kid, feeling this looks different. There's something about this that feels not off,
- 32:58but just different to the other episodes. And it's because this is the
- 33:00only one in cool season. Yeah it does. Till season twelve, they
- 33:02didn't do it again, so it always just stood out to me, going
- 33:06what's going on here? But that's why digital coloring and they ye had season
- 33:09twelve and they did it full on from season fifteen. I think that's when
- 33:13I made the switch, and like to this day, my two best mates
- 33:16to know, like we'll just be like we will say something and it's just
- 33:21like, yeah, it's real, and then my mate Peter'll be like real
- 33:23accid. My quote that I use all the time in real life is just
- 33:29going to put my shoes on whatever Nikola says, are you ready? And
- 33:35are you and your undies in the living room with slot cars. I tried
- 33:37to be not all the time, but yeah, like it. It's definitely
- 33:44like one of the most quotable with my mates, Like we'll again just be
- 33:46like look at my range or just like E usually just tape a bunch of
- 33:52cats together. There are so many elements of this episode that I appreciated more
- 33:54as an adult than I was a kid, Like the crusty like you just
- 33:58said, with the range. As a kid, I didn't get whatever,
- 34:00it's just crusty being crusty. As an adult, I'm like, that's so
- 34:02fucking good. Yeah, Like when I was a kid, I thought he
- 34:05said rage rag and I'm like, yeah, you don't look that angry,
- 34:07like I'm pitchy. You're happy, prusty. I don't know what's going on,
- 34:10but yeah, just also just how just what kind of what it says
- 34:15about Hollywood as well, and you know when a big budget thing comes to
- 34:19a small town and how the town can change, and like you said,
- 34:22it flips the switch where Hollywood, the Hollywood people are the good guys,
- 34:24and Springfield turns into like not grubby, money hungry. But you see the
- 34:30way Quimby carries on, Wigan carries on. You know, if there's an
- 34:32animal that's snooting around just set, we'll have it wiped out, we'll have
- 34:37it extinct, and shops increasing their price. It's kind of like you know
- 34:39when it's a long weekend and all the petrol prices go up. Even snake
- 34:44upped these prices. That's amazing it did. Yeah, exactly. I was
- 34:46going to bash you apparently, except I feel like this episode though, as
- 34:50a kid, whopped my idea and perception of what Hollywood was, because I
- 34:53finally visited in twenty sixteen and I got there and I was like, this
- 34:58is not what I expected, very disappointed. Well, we rocked up on
- 35:02Hollywood Strip at about two pm in the afternoon, and the first thing I
- 35:06saw when we got it we went quite on the proper strip, we're all
- 35:09the Chinese theater and stuff, was we're a little bit further down and we're
- 35:12going to have the car, and the first thing I saw was a homeless
- 35:14dude pissing on a street sign. That was the first thing I ever saw
- 35:16in Hollywood. Welcome to Hollywood, baby, Yeah, exactly right. Yeah,
- 35:21it's basically I felt then how the kids felt when they arrived at the
- 35:24World's Fair. You know the wad fur No no, no, yeah,
- 35:29the wardfur. Did you at least walk away with some wigs? I tried
- 35:31to find some know what I walked away was with less money. Because Nikolas,
- 35:35she's one of she's a patsy. So we'd walk down the street,
- 35:37and I'd say, right, everyone's gonna want you to take a photo of
- 35:39you with them for money. I said, don't do it. Don't go
- 35:43do that, Chewbacer, don't do anything. The first thing she does goes,
- 35:45hey, this guy's gonna snake, let's take a photo. I'm like,
- 35:47oh, Nikola, it's gonna cost us fifty dollars and yeah. You
- 35:52never go near those people. And then the rappers hanging out handing out their
- 35:57demo discs and you grab it and then they're like whoa, oh, whoa,
- 36:00where's a donation? And then they start threatening you were like, oh,
- 36:02what have I done. I've told the story on the podcast numerous times.
- 36:07When Nicola thought would be a good idea, because this is all on
- 36:08our honeymoon, a good idea to walk from the main Las Vegas strip to
- 36:13the old one. And when you're doing that, that's a fair walk,
- 36:16isn't it. Yeah? Fuck oth it is and it's hot. And we
- 36:20get about halfway right and there's this guy, I assume homeless, I don't
- 36:24know, but wrap a demo disc, right, but he just walks up
- 36:28to us out of nowhere from the shadows, and he was just in my
- 36:31ears. I thought he said, can I show you photos of my baby?
- 36:36I was like, yeah, sure, cool dude, whatever you reckon.
- 36:38But he pulls out his phone and I don't know what he actually said,
- 36:40but he starts playing this demo rap on his phone. What do you
- 36:44think? I said, Oh, it's cool here. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:45I'm taking donations. Okay. I remember thinking at that time, I don't
- 36:50actually have any cash on me right now, there is no one around.
- 36:52I'm probably about to die. That's what I remember thinking that moment. I
- 36:57remember looking at seeing nobody, going, we're in here, and he followed,
- 37:00and the entire time he walked with us for about five minutes, just
- 37:04rapping this song in my ear. I could feel his breath on my ear
- 37:07and the smell, and eventually we saw this little bar. Just ran straight
- 37:12in there, and the guy in the bar goes, yeah, they know
- 37:15they can't come into these places, so they just go away. I'm thinking,
- 37:17holy shit, welcome to America. Yeah, man, you've got to
- 37:22have your wits about you. Yeah. That that happened in Venice Beach and
- 37:28then also in New York when they were hanging out the discs and I still
- 37:31have it I'm like, if I'm gonna give this man this money because my
- 37:35life is being threatened, I'm gonna keep this disc. And his name was
- 37:37Swaggy Jeff. And I've still got the disc and Dad found it in storage
- 37:43one day and Dad's like, mate, who's bloody Swaggy Jeff. And I'm
- 37:46like, oh, told him the story and he put the disc in and
- 37:51it's just obviously like wrap And Dad's like, this is fucking awful. Mate,
- 37:54you've got a bit of Perry Como or something to play. I'm gonna
- 37:58google it. Swaggy Jeff. Swaggy Jeff the most handsome hustler from the Bahamas.
- 38:05He has three Oh, Swaggy Jeff sold me a CD on the sidewalk
- 38:12in New York City. That's that's a Reddit post. There you go.
- 38:19It comes forward and I really want to find him. The only thing is
- 38:22the city only had one song on it. I can't believe that's on Reddit.
- 38:27That's amazing. Yeah, that's from ten years ago. Yeah, we
- 38:29got to find Swaggy Jeff. If you're out there listening, Swaggy, get
- 38:31in touch. But yeah, radioactive man, though, what were your first
- 38:36thoughts rewatching? Did you rewatch it for this review, or you just go
- 38:37one based off memory because we've just watched it so many times already. No,
- 38:40No, I've got it on my laptop here and I rewatched it the
- 38:45other morning. Chloe and I were actually watching it and having coffee in bed,
- 38:49just playing catch up. But again, it's just the little things,
- 38:52man, Like just the fact that Barton Millhouse are wearing hats and they never
- 38:55wear hats at the beginning, and it's just like they most fixed their air
- 38:59conditioning. And also the little bit where where Skinner's like radio Man, radioactive
- 39:07man, stupid. I don't know why I could hear that, but anyway,
- 39:10Yes, and then the hats once again. Yeah, it's definitely one
- 39:16of those episodes that sticks in the back of my mind. But also,
- 39:20like you said that, the Easter eggs, like when they up their prices,
- 39:23signage, things that are just peppered throughout that episode. There's always something
- 39:28to look at in every frame. I think it's one that sort of just
- 39:30taps into my my nerdy self, especially with comic book Guy going to the
- 39:36nerd obsessive to find out who's in who's gonna be cast as radioactive Man.
- 39:39Just takes me back to the glory days of the internet. Prince in that
- 39:43chat room. I don't know whether it's supposed to be Princes, but it
- 39:46sure as how it looks like a really weird version of him, right,
- 39:50yeah, yeah, I also love he's like comic book guys little and you
- 39:54hear his shoes squeaking on the floor. Yeah. I always, even as
- 40:01a kid, I was like, that's I'm young, but that's Prince.
- 40:06Like, why is Prince in a movie gossip chat room? Maybe it was
- 40:08their way of dissing him for not doing the episode, and now they're going
- 40:13to do the Return of Leon Kompowski the Michael Jackson episode. Oh right,
- 40:17I didn't know they were going to do that. Yeah, they wrote a
- 40:20sequel and it was going to be Princess said of Michael Jackson, and Prince
- 40:22agreed to do it. Blah blah blah. They wrote the script. So
- 40:25the script is out there somewhere, and I'm pretty sure that the writers have
- 40:30put screenshots of online somewhere on Twitter. But basically, he read the script
- 40:34and said he didn't like a few things and got his I think he's chauffeur
- 40:37to like rewrite the script. For him or something, and they're like,
- 40:39we're not having this, and then he just pulled out. So I think
- 40:44they were just angry about that. Oh my god. I had no idea
- 40:47about that. And because I know Michael Jackson went under an alias, he
- 40:53didn't get credited as much Jackson did. John J. Smith was John Something,
- 40:58wasn't it. Yeah, yeah, some sort of alias. But I
- 41:00had no idea that Prince was gonna come in for like the follow up episode.
- 41:05I didn't even know there was going to be a follow up episode.
- 41:07Yeah, I'm kind kind of glad they didn't makes Michael Jackson want stand out
- 41:09more even though the episode doesn't exist anymore, it doesn't Oh what's been turned
- 41:14down by the actual creators of the show. Alig basically came out and said
- 41:16and in twenty nineteen that they're taking it off of any streaming services because and
- 41:22add of syndication, because they feel that Michael Jackson used it to groom children.
- 41:27Oh what to be like, Hey, I was in the Simpsons type
- 41:30thing, like he came to usk, came on the show, and like
- 41:31he would have put that episode on when he was grooming kids. So now
- 41:36they've just yep, the episode's gone from history. Oh man, I had
- 41:39no idea about that, because didn't they didn't they do that with a few
- 41:44other episodes that were a bit I wouldn't say problematic, But depends on the
- 41:47country. I know, in the I'm pretty sure thirty minutes of a Tokyo
- 41:52wasn't allowed over there when it was originally out. I remember that. Yeah,
- 41:55yeah, there's a couple others, but anyway, but yeah, anyway,
- 41:59I feel like this episode they're radioactive. Man. Do you feel like
- 42:00it would have benefited from more celebrity cameos? Because I tend to prefer when
- 42:04they keep it more Springfield and Springfield celebs like Randy and wolf Castle. But
- 42:07I feel like this episode might have been one where you could have sort of
- 42:09gone down the home at the bat Rap with more celebs coming in. I
- 42:14don't know, what do you think? I think so? I think because
- 42:17the inclusion of Hollywood coming to town they're filming a movie, I think that's
- 42:22when it could have given the writers permission to just go ballistic and have an
- 42:27array of cameos. Same with the episode with Kim basing at, Alec Baldwin
- 42:30and Ron Howard. That's a pretty big lineup, but I definitely think they
- 42:34could have gotten away with it. But at the same time, you run
- 42:36that risk of it being too much of a distraction and taking away from the
- 42:40core characters. It's called the Simpsons because it's about the Simpsons and also Springfield,
- 42:45but I think it could have been an opportunity to have the cameos,
- 42:50like that's their excuse to go ham and have an abundance of cameos, special
- 42:54guests like celebs voicing and coming in to do bit parts and stuff like that.
- 43:00So it's kind of yeah, it's a double edged sword. I think,
- 43:02like too many, it's a distraction, but also you know, have
- 43:06them peppered throughout. I think it could work. Man, what about you,
- 43:08Well, it's funny that you brought it Ron Howar, because I was
- 43:10thinking the exact same thing that maybe bring in a director to play the director
- 43:14role. Not necessarily get actors, but have the director be somebody. I
- 43:17thought, because Ron Howards hilarious, I thought him being him playing that role
- 43:22would have worked. I think, ah, dumbassy, was it run?
- 43:27How would you have done it again? Yeah? Exactly, like obviously like
- 43:32Mickey Rooney, but like Mickey Rooney's Mickey Rooney. Like, I feel like
- 43:36there's only a certain demographic of people that would instantly be like I know that
- 43:40person. And then obviously you know rain Year is you know Springfield celebrity.
- 43:45Yeah, I don't know, Like I directed, that would have been great,
- 43:47Like imagine if like they actually had not seniors spilled bettergla, they had
- 43:52actually Steven Spielberg come in, And I was thinking the same thing. It'd
- 43:54be so cool. I feel like Spielberg will be up for it too.
- 44:00He's like a fun guy. I feel like he'd be like a secret fan
- 44:02if they ask him. He's like, I actually have a confession. I'm
- 44:06the biggest Simpsons fan ever. Like you just like there are those celebrities that
- 44:08have weird obsessions or not weird, but you wouldn't pick it from their personality
- 44:13type. Wasn't George Clooney a fan of South Park and that's why he voiced
- 44:17Sparky the dog, the gay dog. Yeah? Yeah, so that was
- 44:21legit him him he did the barking. Yeah, that's amazing. I know,
- 44:25right, but I'm pretty sure because he was George Clooney at that point
- 44:29and South Park was sort of just starting he probably thought. His agent probably
- 44:31went, Okay, you can go on the show, but you're not going
- 44:34to be George Clinton. You can be something else. He's like, right,
- 44:37I'll be the gay dog if I have to. But at the end
- 44:40of the day, though radioctive Man as an episode, I feel like this
- 44:43is a it becomes a Mialhouse episode, doesn't it, And how he manages
- 44:46to cope with the instant fame of being a child star, and it's kind
- 44:50of like a reflection on how parents push their kids to become stars and then
- 44:52live vicariously through them. It's what Luan and Kirk do here. He's like,
- 44:58I don't want to audition, and she pushes it. He gets the
- 45:00role, and of course we see them enjoying the fame all the money that
- 45:02comes with it, and he's like, I don't want to do this.
- 45:05She can't hear him over her jacuzzi suit, Millhouse, baby learning a drug
- 45:09dealer. Keep her aware. Man. Whenever you see Phil Hartman like Lionel
- 45:15Hearts and Troumicclure just makes me so sad. Oh Man, like we when
- 45:20because a lot of people that I talk to and I'm like, yeah,
- 45:23Phil Hartman and I and they're like, yeah, like he doesn't do much
- 45:27these days, and I'm like, oh, buddy, I have something to
- 45:30tell you. Everything he was in and like even jingle all the way,
- 45:35just like, oh, Howard, this cookies are so good. Just he's
- 45:39he was just so good man. And again like even though it was like
- 45:45little bits where it be trou McClure or Lionel Hearts or even just other little
- 45:50obscure characters, it was just so damn good. But going back to Millhouse
- 45:55becoming the star. I respect the writers forgeting it to Millhouse and not Bart
- 46:01and having it be a character that isn't in the immediate family. But then
- 46:07also that way Bart learns that famers and everything, like Millhouse has already learned
- 46:10that right off the bat. He's like, I don't want this, like
- 46:14obviously Kirk and LAWANDU. But Bart sees it through Millhouse and is like,
- 46:20maybe this worked out pretty well because this isn't exactly what's cracked up to be.
- 46:23I think it was also nice that Bart wasn't jealous of Millhouse. He
- 46:28just sort of worked out a new way to get involved in the film with
- 46:30that having to sort of try and sabotage Millhouse's position. Yeah, what did
- 46:34he say to Lisa? Lisa gives the big speech and he says something like
- 46:37yeah, I'll just suck up to him or something like that. Love lot
- 46:39of people do with God. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. When
- 46:45he goes in and sees Millhouse and the director comes and he's like, again
- 46:49it again, I got it again. Like I say that quote all the
- 46:52time of the podcast, when I say again again and again it again,
- 46:57and then someone else is like, we did it. It's done. Yeah.
- 47:00As a kid, I always thought I was a Bart, But the
- 47:04more older I get, I feel like I was definitely a Millhouse. Well
- 47:07do you feel like you're a Millhouse or a Bart? I was a Bart?
- 47:10Yeah. So primary school I was a shithead, Like I was always
- 47:15going to the principal's office. I so, I actually this sounds so bad.
- 47:21I bit a kid on the arm after Bart did something similar once and
- 47:24I got sent to the principals. I was, And that's when mom and
- 47:28dad were like, I think we've made a mistake letting him watch the Simpsons.
- 47:30And yeah, I was a bit of a feral child in primary school.
- 47:34Soon as as soon as I hit high school. It was I was
- 47:37like a little nerdy kid, but yeah, I was definitely a Bart like
- 47:40absolutely, and I actually I actually told a teacher to eat my shorts in
- 47:45grade three. Man, what about ass Ah? Yeah, man, it
- 47:51didn't go down well. But like, you know, looking back on it,
- 47:53like, and my mum was the type she wouldn't call it the Simpsons.
- 47:58I don't know if your parents were this, but it's a very I
- 48:00realized it was a very common theme. Mom would be like, oh,
- 48:02you're not watching the Bart Simpson Shower, are you? Mom? Simpsons?
- 48:07Well? See, I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons until I was six
- 48:09because it's the famous iconic story I've always told on the podcast of Triosopara One
- 48:15bad dream house, the family get possessed, make it gets a knife out
- 48:19of the kitchen draw. I went and did the same thing, walking to
- 48:21the lande with the family, had a knife in my hand. And that
- 48:22was the end of me watching The Simpsons for several years. So not good.
- 48:30It's funny though I'm a parent now, wow, So I always say,
- 48:32what was mum worried about? You know, the Simpsons? Isn't that
- 48:35bad compared to what they watch these days. The Simpsons isn't that bad.
- 48:37But I now watch the Simpsons, and particularly I was talking with Guy yesterday
- 48:42about the Itchy and Scratchy cartoons. I now watch it and go I'm not
- 48:45sure whether I want Elliott to watch this yet, because Elliott, my son's
- 48:49nearly six, so he's kind of old enough to know about it. But
- 48:52my daughter's three nearly four, and she can't quite differentiate the different difference between
- 48:55what's real and what's not. So if she's watching Itchy and Scratchy and Scratches
- 49:00getting his head cut off and blood squeating it everywhere, I think it's too
- 49:02much for her. I don't know what are your thoughts. It's a tough
- 49:06one because actually, Itchy and Scratchy was my dad's favorite part of The Simpsons.
- 49:12Every time an episode was on, in the episode like Dad would laugh
- 49:16like the creepy old uncle. He'd be wheezing and slapping his knee. And
- 49:21I was young, so I don't know, Like, obviously I'm not a
- 49:27parent, but I'm at that age now where I can look back and be
- 49:29like, okay, like watching Itching and scratch and be like if I had
- 49:32a child, Now there was maybe similar age to either your son or your
- 49:37daughter. I'd be like, as goofy as this is, and it's stylized
- 49:43because it's a cartoon. Maybe there's a time and a place for this.
- 49:46I think I think gonna wait till he's maybe seven. I don't know,
- 49:50Yeah, And I always I don't know why. When I was younger,
- 49:54like really really young, and I just started watching it, the one Itchy
- 49:58and Scratchy episode that terrified me. And it's the stupidest episode when Scratchy gets
- 50:06the ants put on his head and goes up through into the TV and Elvis
- 50:10is like, ah, this show ain't no good. Like that just scared
- 50:15me. I don't know why. Just weird things like that that scare you
- 50:19as a kid. You look back and you're like, what was wrong with
- 50:21me? I used to be terrified of My favorite movie is ET, But
- 50:23as a child, I was terrified of it. I was back now and
- 50:25go, what the hell Brendan's ET? I don't know, Like mind you
- 50:30that that shot where he like flares up and screams and all that, that's
- 50:36like the one that terrified Yeah. And also when he's in the ditch dying,
- 50:42I'm like, that's horrifying what happened to him. I remember when she
- 50:46the mother comes in and takes the kids out, and he was like mom
- 50:50and starts screaming and crying because you're taking the kids away from me. I
- 50:52was like, that fucking haunted me. Man. Yeah, it was a
- 50:57bit like when you think about watching that as a kid, You're like,
- 51:00that's heavy, Like that has a lot of heavy themes in it, Like
- 51:02it's not just about, you know, a boy's relationship with an alien who
- 51:06becomes his best friend. I'm like, there's a lot of heavy themes in
- 51:08this. Do you find though, talking about like relating to characters? I
- 51:12find the older I get I was discussing with guy yesterday as well, the
- 51:15older I get I relate to characters that I've never used to. So as
- 51:17a kid related to the kids. Obviously, as you old, you relate
- 51:20to Homer and whatnot. But I find now as a parent, even though
- 51:23these guys aren't necessarily parents, Like Mo, for example, I relate to
- 51:28the anger and bitterness that Mo has to the world. It's like he's like
- 51:30a stress ball that I can live vicariously through. And Grandpa like shaking the
- 51:35fist of the cloud. Do you find that you've had moments like that?
- 51:37Now? Where has it happened to you with Grandpa kind of thing? Yeah?
- 51:42Yeah, I there are times like where I'll just get so cranky over
- 51:46the most trivial thing, and I'll make sure no one's around when it happens
- 51:50because I get very embarrassed and I'll have my episode and then be like what
- 51:55was that all about? I'm like, how old am I getting now that
- 51:58I'm like reacting way Whereas back in the day, like early twenties, like
- 52:01fine, Now it's like little things all, like you know, making sure
- 52:07I get stuff done during the day, like you know, around all the
- 52:10errands and stuff like that, and also planning a wedding as well, like
- 52:14that's like a stressful thing in itself. And you know, because Chloe's from
- 52:20South Africa and mum and dad live in Mauritius. So Mum and Dad arrived
- 52:24here a few days ago, My sister in law and brother in law are
- 52:28coming here tonight, so it's all happening and it's kind of like Christmas vacation
- 52:34when the whole family's over and it's a full house and everything's happening because my
- 52:38parents live like fifteen minutes down the road, but I'm there like nearly every
- 52:43second day because I've got my workshop there where I do a lot of work.
- 52:45You know, we get like an Etsy order or something, so it's
- 52:49just all flat chat. All systems go until next week so and then all
- 52:52of a sudden it's over, and then it's just been all little things,
- 52:58man. So I definitely relate to Mo and Grandpa for sure. And I
- 53:01also like, obviously when you're a kid, you relate to the kids.
- 53:05But then when you find out that you're now older or around the same age
- 53:09as Homer and Marge, you're like, oh what, Yeah, no,
- 53:15I never thought i'd get to this, because I was saying to Nicola the
- 53:17other day, when we were like five or six, our parents were the
- 53:21same age and they seemed fucking old man. And now we are that to
- 53:27our kids. You know, they must look at us and go, they're
- 53:28old people. I don't feel old, but I'm old man. Yeah.
- 53:31And it's like that meme of the parents from Rugrats when you realize you're the
- 53:37same age as them and you're like, oh my god, I'm I'm feeling
- 53:40DP pickles. This is crazy, not good at all. No, no,
- 53:45no, see I find myself relating to Mow and Grandpa more and more
- 53:46often. Yeah, one hundred percent. Man, And like, oh man,
- 53:51I don't know if it's a problem down in Geelong, but our biggest
- 53:52problem at the moment is little shits on those four thousand dollars e bikes at
- 53:57the moment that are like fanging a on paths and everything. And we've got
- 54:00a dog, We've got a little English Couga spaniel. Like they're doing like
- 54:05fifty k's on these little bike paths and like it might just take our dog
- 54:09just to veer off to go smell something clip him. And I get so
- 54:14angry, and I'm like, was I have this obnoxious when I was a
- 54:16kid? And I'm like, no, it's definitely the children's fault. It's
- 54:21definitely the children who are wrong. I knew I was getting old when I
- 54:23started getting annoyed by people's haircuts. Oh but mind you like some of the
- 54:28like mullets and the broccoli haircut. Come on. I look at him like
- 54:32what are you doing, buddy, and Nicholas like you're just old. Yeah
- 54:36that's true. Did you have the ball cut when you were a kid.
- 54:39I had the Nick Carter part down the middle. I had that too.
- 54:43I had the frosted tips as well, but Mum insisted I had a bowl
- 54:45cut when I was a kid, and I think that didn't help with bullying
- 54:49in high school. In primary school, she's like, oh, you look
- 54:52a door where I'm like, if you say that, I must like I'm
- 54:54like Nelson, I'm like, I feel like punching myself. Well, was
- 54:57anything il you want to talk about? Radioactive man? Before? We aren't
- 54:59getting to your cosplay. I've covered all the good bits, right, I
- 55:01think, like, yeah, I think that's pretty much it, Like obviously
- 55:05like that you can go on and on about the jokes and all that.
- 55:07I just love, like Millhouses, is this a real X ray machine?
- 55:12Brilliant? Good question. We'll look into that. It was a great voice
- 55:16for that character, wasn't it. Ah Yeah, yeah, I just But
- 55:21then I also love because that's Hanka's area when he's like I'm telling you we're
- 55:24sixty three years old and he's dead. It's just that gets you so many
- 55:30times in memes as well. It's just like, hey, we should get
- 55:31that person. They're dead. Ye just also like, wow, look at
- 55:37that ed. Okay, this place must be hot. They don't even have
- 55:40big advertising, all the correct spelling. I think for me, this standout
- 55:46scene though, is definitely the acid scene. That's the one that stuck with
- 55:51me the most. I don't know about you, what's the what's the one
- 55:52scene that you met with the most? Ah, it's the acid It's the
- 55:55acid scene, but also just the last shot of rain year after he's put
- 56:00the goggles on and he's like oh h and he just sits there like a
- 56:04little schoolboy prepped for his doom and he gets smashed away, and then obviously
- 56:07the ah oh, and then Krusty being like, I want to talk about
- 56:13this coffee. It's kind of like when he comes at the end of Who's
- 56:17Mister Burns? Part one? He's been a runa for six weeks? What
- 56:21have I missed? You know? Exactly? Exactly? Yeah, Yeah,
- 56:25definitely the acid scene. And I think just anything just with filming, and
- 56:30just also like Ralph and the boys on set, pestering the teamsters place,
- 56:36painting horses and cows and all stuff like that. It's just like again like
- 56:42going back to my mates and I quoting it like we'll be having a slow
- 56:45day, saying we'll just be like so lazy and surly it's so good,
- 56:49like Homer's relating to the teamsters. It's just me now, Like getting paid
- 56:52to do nothing seems like the dream. It's oh man, Like some people
- 56:57on movie sets, they just I'm like, why, why are you?
- 57:00What are you doing? That's what my wife says to me usually on a
- 57:04day to day basis. I've got to ask. Those POGs behind you hanging
- 57:07there are not only POGs, they are Simpson's Tasos. Oh my god,
- 57:12the Tazos. I used to have the fucking purple that you put them in.
- 57:15And I'll move the camera up so you can kind of see. Can
- 57:17you kind of see them? There we go Star Wars ones, Yeah,
- 57:21I can see them, There we go. POGs are sort of in there.
- 57:22They're the Tazo's in there as well. Just yeah, trying to move
- 57:25around. That's my vinyl collection, yep, yeah, love it. A
- 57:30lot of crazy crap on the walls. Also the trading card wall over there,
- 57:32see the trading card wall. The entire wallpaper is just nineties trading cards.
- 57:36Oh that's so sick. We actually just had a card shop open like
- 57:39two kilometers down the road. It's a tiny little shoe box, but they've
- 57:43got mostly like Pokemon Yu Gi Oh basketball, but they had an unopen Mint
- 57:49Batman nineteen eighty nine box of cards and bubblegum, and I'm like, I
- 57:55took my father father in law in there the other day and I'm like,
- 58:00what that gums like? And it's like when Milhouse bites the gum and it
- 58:02breaks his snaith. Yeah, yeah, oh, I got you unboxing out
- 58:08and you channel will be good views though, right, surely one hundred percent,
- 58:13But then you get people that are just like, why did you open
- 58:15it? It was mid yeah, just like like it'd be like comic book
- 58:22Guy when he's the collector trying to like keep Lucy Lawless in mid condition exactly.
- 58:27I remember because we got a second separate channel. I called it nerd
- 58:30Daddy. I do videos with my kid unboxing stuff every moe. He's like
- 58:32a baby, and we get so many people with unbox like Funko Pops take
- 58:36him out and play with him. My son when he was like want to
- 58:37be like bashing him around, and the comments are like, why are you
- 58:40taking it out of the box? It's not worth it any thing anymore.
- 58:43And I'm like, I don't care. It's a fucking toy. I'm playing
- 58:46with it. He's a kid. Let him enjoy it. Yeah, it's
- 58:51like live vi carously through him because you're clearly never gonna take your shit out
- 58:53of the box. So this is what it looks like out of the box.
- 58:57This is what it looks like when you do what what was originally intended.
- 59:00Trying to look around because I've got a lot of crazy crap on the
- 59:01walls too. But this was found the other day. I made the mine.
- 59:05Found this at a flea market. The rings from the Billy Zane Phantom
- 59:10some shit you're keep in the box. Yeah, I'm like, I had
- 59:13them when I was a kid, but you found them for five bucks at
- 59:15this flea market here in Sydney. I'm like, dude, can you please
- 59:19grab them for me? Like that's that's it, because like, yeah,
- 59:22just other little things. I don't know if you remember the McFarland toys back
- 59:27that was so great. I love the world of Springfield figures. I look
- 59:30back now and think, fuck, I wish I had collected those. Oh
- 59:34yeah, I used to have the diorama of Krusty Burger. We bought that
- 59:38in New York when Dad took Mom and I had the Krusty Burger one.
- 59:43And this is so obscure. I remember when Red Rooster did their kids meals
- 59:46and they had the Simpsons. You collect them and put them on the couch.
- 59:50Do look over there, you see it? No, don't tell me.
- 59:53Oh my god, I've got the Red Rooster box as well, you
- 1:00:00magnificent bastard. That is amazing. I've got three of the boxes still pushed
- 1:00:05out that it is flat, flat packed. Wow, that is impressive,
- 1:00:08because no one goes to Red Rooster anymore. No one really went to Red
- 1:00:12Rooster in the first place. I remember there were like maybe five times in
- 1:00:15my life, and every time it was always really slow, so we never
- 1:00:17went back. But I remember the rooster rolls were always delicious, just the
- 1:00:21chicken rolls. And I found this coupon box. We've gone through the garage.
- 1:00:23We're cleaning out the garage the other day, and I found this box
- 1:00:27of coupons that I just know I didn't keep them old coupons, and it
- 1:00:30was Red Rooster and it was two rooster rolls for five dollars, and I
- 1:00:35was like, what a time to be alive? That was. It's like
- 1:00:37moon Bige, just like we don't get that anymore. We found I found
- 1:00:42Hungry Jacks bouches as well, and it was two whoppers for three dollars.
- 1:00:45Can you imagine two whoppers for three dollars? Oh, it's a bargain,
- 1:00:51I know, right, And I have great memories of name. We'd always
- 1:00:53we'd go to her house on school holidays and that meant we'd go to Hungry
- 1:00:57Jacks. So we'd always get the two for three dollars. What would be
- 1:01:00to walk down Hungry Jackson? Nan? So whatever I see Hunger Jackson to
- 1:01:01think of school holidays Nan space oh Man, Yeah, that that's that's prime
- 1:01:07like childhood memory. And then like the six week school holidays that was the
- 1:01:12best. But getting back to those figures from Red Rooster, I feel like
- 1:01:15in Australian I've only learned this recently. Australia had a lot of collectibles,
- 1:01:20usually assigned to some sort of junk food, but Simpsons collectibles that we could
- 1:01:22collect over the time. That's whether it be the Tazo's those things, remember
- 1:01:27the little I've got them in here somewhere either over there, the little motion
- 1:01:30cards that came in the c ceds. Remember CC's were a thing with the
- 1:01:32Simpsons for a while. I lived on CC's when I was a kid,
- 1:01:35and I think that's why I was a little bit of a chubber when I
- 1:01:37was a kid. And I do remember those those, yeah, particular ones.
- 1:01:42I remember they did something similar for when Batman and Robin came out.
- 1:01:45They had the plastic kind they had a little film cell. Oh my god,
- 1:01:52I love it. You've got an inventory of like my childhood in your
- 1:01:54room right there. That's that's amazing. The plans for me on the Nerdaddy
- 1:01:59channel is to show all this shit to my son from when I said,
- 1:02:01this is when I was a kid, and that's going to be the channel,
- 1:02:02just me just get bringing in all the nineties useless shit. Yeah,
- 1:02:07yeah, absolutely, I oh god, I do actually want to get the
- 1:02:12issue one of radio Active Man and just have that framed, just because it's
- 1:02:15such a good looking cover too. It is it really is. Yeah,
- 1:02:19I've got my first edition like you've got the other Simpsons comic because the other
- 1:02:23side is the divisional Fantastic four covers and of Homer coming out of the ground.
- 1:02:28That's the back of it, right. Well, that's the thing I
- 1:02:30always got confused with. I'm like, is that the proper issue one or
- 1:02:32the one of Homer coming out of the ground? Is that the proper issue
- 1:02:35one? Homer coming out of the ground is the issue one? But I
- 1:02:37thought the back of the back page of that was that is it? Not?
- 1:02:40No? No, this one right here? You want a nostalgia trip
- 1:02:45mate, one of my favorite shows of all time, love dinosaurs? Yeah,
- 1:02:50yeah, I want to start a podcast on dinosaurs. You should because,
- 1:02:52like again, it's nostalgia, man. But yeah, this one says
- 1:02:54Issue one Special Collectors Edition. But then I see the other one with Homer
- 1:02:59coming out of the ground, Like, which one came first? The one
- 1:03:00Come of the Ground definitely came first, I'm pretty sure, but I could
- 1:03:04be wrong. I always under the assumption it was the first one. But
- 1:03:07who knows. This one has like a really good this one has a really
- 1:03:10good Bartman storyline and it comes with a poster as well, which is really
- 1:03:15cool. But yeah, let's promote your stuff before we before we wrap up.
- 1:03:17So basically, you still do any cosplaying things, So what do you
- 1:03:21putting more energy into these days. So like, I've got a few side
- 1:03:24hustles apart from YouTube, because you can't always rely on YouTube. So I
- 1:03:28have an Etsy store where I sell a lot of my props because I have
- 1:03:30silicon molds where I can make resin castings and copies of all these pieces.
- 1:03:36So a lot of them are like, you know, Freddy Krueger busts,
- 1:03:37Michael Meyer's stuff, a few Batman pieces, Hans Moleman. Oh, yes,
- 1:03:44so Hans Moleman. So I sculpted a hyper realistic bust of Hans Moleman
- 1:03:49back in twenty seventeen. I've still got the mold for it. I actually
- 1:03:51want to recast it in translucent flesh tinted resin, do all the things.
- 1:03:57I add all the wispy hairs one by one. The eyes are custom made
- 1:04:01and they're all blood shot and just disgusting. But I actually want to get
- 1:04:05like a child sized mannequin and sculpt Hans's body and make a full statue of
- 1:04:12Hans with a little sad daffodil. And yeah, I sculpted that, and
- 1:04:16I was actually really proud of that one. It got a lot of attention
- 1:04:19and a lot of people were just like, what the fuck is that thing?
- 1:04:23And I'm like, it's Hans more Man. I'm like, I want
- 1:04:26to like spray something on it that makes it smell like a peanut. Yeah,
- 1:04:30so yeah I did that, Like you know, the Big Les Show.
- 1:04:33I sculpted Sassy years ago, and I've still got the mold for that.
- 1:04:36And I showed Jared I forget he surnamed the creator, and he's like,
- 1:04:40mate, that's so cool. So I got the thumbs up from him.
- 1:04:43So I sculpt a lot of like obscure background characters. I love doing
- 1:04:46stuff like that, but mostly it's been like horror Batman stuff. So but
- 1:04:51also now I've got the second channel just called Chris Stanley, where I just
- 1:04:55do like movie reviews, collectible reviews. Like so this is really nerdy,
- 1:04:58but yes this morning put up an unboxing video. So this right here is
- 1:05:02a vintage knife and this is actually the knife they used on the original Freddy
- 1:05:10Krueger glove. So they actually used tomato knives that were made in like the
- 1:05:13sixties, seventies and eighties, so originally it's like that, and then they
- 1:05:16took the handle off, turned it upside down, and I found one in
- 1:05:20Mint condition. So I did an unboxing video that people respond well to that
- 1:05:25on the second channel because I do a lot of horror and like a lot
- 1:05:27of prop stuff as well, so cosplay, Chris, I keep it build
- 1:05:30stuff and costume stuff like if I'm wearing something. But the second channel,
- 1:05:35which I do a lot more frequent uploads because you know, there's always movie
- 1:05:40news, movies to review stuff like that, So putting a lot of effort
- 1:05:45into the second channel just to get the momentum going, because it's hard man,
- 1:05:47Like you know how it is just to keep fresh, keep ideas fresh,
- 1:05:53but also grow that audience. Well everyone's just doing it now, which
- 1:05:58makes us just so hard to stand out. I've had this discussion with Guy
- 1:06:01the other day about rewatch podcasts and how it used to be so easy to
- 1:06:05start to rewatch podcasts, but now every person who starred in the show is
- 1:06:11now doing a rewatch podcast of the show that we're in, and they're just
- 1:06:14stealing all the attention. It's like, let us have something please. Yeah.
- 1:06:17Yeah, And I've kind of like thought of it. I'm like,
- 1:06:20maybe I should go back and like revisit stuff for stuff like that, but
- 1:06:25yeah, you it just people just do that, and it just they get
- 1:06:28the views and everything, and look, it shouldn't always be about the views,
- 1:06:30but when you put in all that work and effort, it definitely does
- 1:06:33help. Oh that the views matter, because that's how you get press junkets,
- 1:06:36that's how you get all expenses paid trips mate the views. Yeah,
- 1:06:41yeah, that's it. That's it. So yeah. Look, I've definitely
- 1:06:45had some great opportunities from the cosplay world as well. I've been fortunate enough
- 1:06:49to work in the States, the Middle East, of all places cosplaying,
- 1:06:53which is crazy. Do you find it's a different audience with the two different
- 1:06:57channels or do you think a lot of them have sort of come over you
- 1:07:00Are you finding new fans through your second channel. I'm finding new fans through
- 1:07:03the second channel absolutely. Like when I announced on the main channel that I
- 1:07:08started the second channel a year ago, actually, you know, a few
- 1:07:12sifted over, but others just stayed for the cosplay stuff, which is fair.
- 1:07:15And I feel like if I continued that and uploading movie reviews cosplay stuff
- 1:07:20in the one channel, it gets confusing for your audience, like what are
- 1:07:24you doing? Whereas if you're doing all talking stuff movie related stuff, then
- 1:07:28people know what they're subscribing to, so I think that again, I should
- 1:07:32have done it years ago, but you know, better late than never.
- 1:07:35So yeah, how hard is it to get people because you've got three hundred
- 1:07:39and seventy five thousand subscribers to think on your main channel? Is that right
- 1:07:42something around there? How hard is it to get even ten percent of them
- 1:07:45to come over to a new channel. It's hard, man Like, it's
- 1:07:48really hard. And you've also got to be at the mindset. Some people
- 1:07:51are going to just be like this isn't for me, and you're like,
- 1:07:54yeah, fair enough. But then that's when you build up that new audience
- 1:07:58that are there because they know exactly what they're getting, and you know they'll
- 1:08:02you know, watch most of the videos that you upload each and every time,
- 1:08:06so it's good and you know, you build a good little community.
- 1:08:10You know, you have your people that always comment, and then you get
- 1:08:14newcomers. They'll be like, hey, man, I just subscribe today.
- 1:08:15Good stuff, you know, greetings from Canada or Portugal or Brazil, and
- 1:08:19you're like that's awesome, man, like, welcome, that's very very cool.
- 1:08:23So you never know, like what the algorithm is going to bring you
- 1:08:26and then there are those videos that you don't put any effort into and it
- 1:08:30does so well, and then you do a banger of a video where you
- 1:08:33put your heart and soul into it and it gets bugger all views and you're
- 1:08:38like, I don't know what's going on. What's good? Is new?
- 1:08:40Do you have a second guess yourself? Oh? All the time. All
- 1:08:44the time. I second guess myself. I compare myself and I saw a
- 1:08:47quote a few months ago. I'm like, man, I got to keep
- 1:08:49remembering that. Don't compare your five months journey to someone's five year journey.
- 1:08:55So yeah, there are some people on YouTube that are friends of mine and
- 1:08:58I'm like, man, they just have to fart on camera and it just
- 1:09:01explodes, like it just and but you're also like, they've been doing that
- 1:09:05channel for quite a long time, so it's and again like it's it's a
- 1:09:11lot of effort, a lot of effort, man, thinking on your feet,
- 1:09:14coming up with fresh ideas. But I love it. I love doing
- 1:09:17the second channel because I feel like there's a lot more that I can do.
- 1:09:23Whereas opposed to doing a cosplay build or like a custom collectible, it's
- 1:09:27expensive, it's very expensive to do. It's a big edit and that's why
- 1:09:30when I announced a second channel, I said things are probably going to be
- 1:09:33spaced out more on the main channel now because like my last one was a
- 1:09:39Batman custom collectible from a month and a bit ago, but we're about to
- 1:09:43put a Superman one up, so you know, as long as you're transparent
- 1:09:45with your audience, it's like, guys, obviously that's not going to be
- 1:09:47as frequent, but I'm still doing cosplay stuff in the background, but obviously
- 1:09:51want to work more on reviewing movies, entertainment news and doing press junkets and
- 1:09:59stuff like that. I love doing that. Like that trip to New York
- 1:10:01that we were talking about last month was great, and yeah, it definitely
- 1:10:08builds up your confidence, your people's skills and stuff like that. And reviewing
- 1:10:12film is hard. A lot of people look at it and be like,
- 1:10:15you've got to sit there and talk about a movie. I'm like, it's
- 1:10:16actually it can be hard, especially trying to get all your thoughts and feelings
- 1:10:19out without having to edit the video and be like, damn, I should
- 1:10:23have said this, should have said that, and also not being afraid to
- 1:10:27have an opinion. That's against everyone else's. Like when everyone's in a certain
- 1:10:31mindset of how good or bad a film is and yours might be different,
- 1:10:35you get scared to upload that video in fear of backlash. But that's when
- 1:10:40you've got to be like, man, if someone has something bad to say,
- 1:10:43they're the one with the problem. Usually someone would just be like,
- 1:10:46oh, man, that sucks. You didn't enjoy it. Hopefully we can
- 1:10:49agree on it next time. I'm like, man, if everyone was like,
- 1:10:53YouTube would be an easier place to be on. And some people are
- 1:10:57just like, I'm unsubscribing your fuck. I don't agree, And I'm like,
- 1:11:01announcing your unsubscribing is like a Karen announcing you just lost the customer.
- 1:11:06I can't go on our iTunes reviews because we've got like thousands of five star
- 1:11:12reviews on there, but occasionally people on to check at one start and there'll
- 1:11:15be something like, been listening to this show for years and now there's ads
- 1:11:18on there. I'm not listening to ads, And I'm thinking, so,
- 1:11:21I've given you years of free entertainment, but you don't want to have to
- 1:11:26but you don't have to pay for Yeah, if you want this show to
- 1:11:28continue going we need to put some ads in so that I can survive financially.
- 1:11:31Yeah, how dare you? How dare you? I'm unsubscribing? What
- 1:11:34what? Yeah? Exactly like or like you do like a sixty second integrated
- 1:11:42ad on a YouTube video and people lose their minds. I'm like, sorry
- 1:11:45if I'm just trying to earn an extra bit of quid, because it's very
- 1:11:47hard and temperamental being on YouTube. Yeah, are you earning a living through
- 1:11:51this? Now? Is this your job? Ah? It is? But
- 1:11:54not only YouTube, man. I could not rely on YouTube obviously because things
- 1:11:58are more spread out on the main channel, so that revenue goes down there.
- 1:12:00Revenue did build up a bit on the second channel, and then it
- 1:12:04kind of tape it a bit. But again, you've got to keep the
- 1:12:06momentum going, build up the subscribers, and then you know, eventually the
- 1:12:11regular views definitely do come. But obviously I've got Etsy, my Etsy store,
- 1:12:17and then campaigns like social media campaigns, stuff like that. In July,
- 1:12:23I'm going up to Warner Brothers Movie World to do a talk on batsuits,
- 1:12:27which will be fun. So you know, that's a nice little bit
- 1:12:30of pocket money, and you know, I'm in my element. But there
- 1:12:33are a lot of times when studios pr companies kind of try to take advantage
- 1:12:40of, like not just maybe like other creators and they're like, hey,
- 1:12:43we'll send you this if you do this for free, and I'm like,
- 1:12:45no, I don't want that product. No, So it's like but also
- 1:12:48like, you know, that is a cool product, But at the end
- 1:12:53of the day, like I'm putting effort into this and I need it'd be
- 1:12:57nice to get compensated financially because I could be focusing my energy somewhere else where
- 1:13:01there is a compensation involved or earning something from it. And unfortunately, a
- 1:13:08lot of new creators or novice creators that are still fresh to doing campaigns unfortunately
- 1:13:14get taken advantage of. And it sucks because there are some talented people out
- 1:13:17there, you know, building stuff or you know, doing tutorials or you
- 1:13:21know even you know, make up tutorials and stuff like that, like really
- 1:13:26talented people, and they unfortunately just get taken advantage of sometimes because they think,
- 1:13:30oh, it's X, Y and Z, which is a big studio,
- 1:13:32I'm working with them, Da da da, and they'll just keep they'll
- 1:13:35keep pushing and pushing the friendship. So yeah, you've got to kind of
- 1:13:39have your wits about you. I find too, when you're a content creator,
- 1:13:43when you align yourself with a brand, I just suppose have a Disney
- 1:13:45where we've worked with Disney before because they have the Simpsons on Disney Plus and
- 1:13:49things like that. Now, when you're a content creator that relies on support
- 1:13:53from your listeners on Patreon and things like that, when you align yourself with
- 1:13:57big brands like Disney, a lot of people just assume they must be making
- 1:14:00money. Then if Disney's working with them, that's not the case. Disney
- 1:14:03might chuck you some money or send you some a free subscription to Disney Plus
- 1:14:06or something. But just because you're aligned with the big brand doesn't mean that
- 1:14:11you shouldn't support these guys because they're probably still doing it tough. Yeah.
- 1:14:14Absolutely, And sometimes it can be the biggest studios that are the biggest tied
- 1:14:17asses and it's not a dig it's just facts. That's just how it is
- 1:14:20sometimes. And then you have other studios that aren't as not well established but
- 1:14:29not as bigger or popular, and they're just like name your price. I'm
- 1:14:34like, wow, that's really refreshing, and they give you creative freedom.
- 1:14:38They're like, we want you to have your own voice. It's got to
- 1:14:41be you. We don't want to give you a script, but obviously,
- 1:14:43like if you want to type something up, shoot it to us and just
- 1:14:45make sure you're hitting all the right talking points. But you've got to make
- 1:14:48sure it's all about you, otherwise your audience will see straight through and be
- 1:14:51like, what are you doing your shill When it comes to editing your videos.
- 1:14:57See I hate the cliche editing of many YouTube videos of logs where it's
- 1:15:00the quick cutaways, the zoom and the zoom outs they're random, and then
- 1:15:04cutting back to you talking normally. How are you with that? Because I
- 1:15:09just can't see myself ever bringing myself to doing that, even though I know
- 1:15:12that's exactly what the algorithm wants. I just don't think I could ever do
- 1:15:15it. How are you with that? I try and keep it as real
- 1:15:19as possible, like I always try and just be me, Like, obviously
- 1:15:23there is a bit of heightened energy, but I want people to get excited
- 1:15:29or just have a good time watching my videos, and if they get a
- 1:15:31laugh out of it, that's alsome. I always try and be goofy self,
- 1:15:34deprecating, humor, all that all for that, Like, I love
- 1:15:39making people laugh. I think that's the best feeling in the world in terms
- 1:15:43of like you know, when like someone does a vlog and they put their
- 1:15:46hand over the lens and then it cuts to something else, I'm like,
- 1:15:49ah, that's not really me. I try and keep it as real as
- 1:15:55possible, but I get a bit like my my brain's got so much going
- 1:15:59on, and then it kind of trips over my words. So I do
- 1:16:01fumble a lot. So I do have a lot of jump cuts, especially
- 1:16:03with like a movie review. I do sometimes stutter, so like, you
- 1:16:10know, thank God for jump cuts. So I like with editing, I
- 1:16:13try and keep it as real as possible. Like when I unbox that knife
- 1:16:17yesterday, I try and try to keep it as raw as possible because there's
- 1:16:21a big deal for me. I've been after this knife for fourteen years and
- 1:16:26it's all like come to this. I try to, you know, just
- 1:16:28try and like maintain my excitement but also just be professional, but like keep
- 1:16:34it real. Like when you're unboxing this thing, people want to be in
- 1:16:36there be as if like they're they're there they're amongst it, they're involved.
- 1:16:43But yeah, with I did some vlogging in New York. Again, try
- 1:16:45to keep it as real as possible and try and keep it funny as well.
- 1:16:47Like I do so many Simpson references in my videos. It's not funny
- 1:16:51and I rely on a lot of Simpson references. And some people with the
- 1:16:55comments will be like, that was very good. I'll do a cutaway to
- 1:16:58a clip, or like if a film's bad, I'll be like, you
- 1:17:03know, these are my thoughts, and then it cuts to crusty and he's
- 1:17:05like, what the hell is that? Just stuff like that. I felt
- 1:17:11the Simpsons is one of those things that if you grew up in the nineties,
- 1:17:14you'll always be able to find a friend. If you're a fan of
- 1:17:15the Simpsons, you'll always have a Simpsons moment that you can sort of bond
- 1:17:19over one hundred percent man and like because of these groups on Facebook like Yours,
- 1:17:26rock Bottom, Compy, Hypoglobal, MegaNet Obscure, there's Obscure Simpsons moments
- 1:17:31stuff like that. It's crazy how many people out there have really just relished
- 1:17:41the Golden Era and everything and just how beloved and how protected it is it
- 1:17:45is crazy and like people you wouldn't expect as well, like people you'd be
- 1:17:49like, you look like a lawyer, and then they'll start quoting like Season
- 1:17:53six back to front. You're like, did not pick that, not at
- 1:17:57all? No, all right, man, Well, it's been a joy
- 1:17:59to have you on. Let's plug it your Etsy store before you go,
- 1:18:01and we find you on Etsy. So it's just called props by Chris on
- 1:18:05Etsy. And you know there's a bit of horror stuff, a bit of
- 1:18:08comic book relay stuff like Batman stuff, stuff like that YouTube. The main
- 1:18:12channel is Cosplay Chris a little bit slow there at the moment, like the
- 1:18:15uploads are spread out a lot more. But the second channel, which has
- 1:18:18more frequent uploads, is just called Chris Stanley And you'll see my melon in
- 1:18:24the thumbnail little avatar logo there. But yeah, man, thank you for
- 1:18:29having me on. Like I said, I'm actually like a really big fan
- 1:18:30of you, and guy kept me company on my plane ride home from New
- 1:18:35York last month, so it was actually really good to see a few good
- 1:18:41laughs on the plane by myself. So I probably looked like a crazy person.
- 1:18:45What's been love to have you on, mate, And hopefully we have
