- 0:28you'll see the URL. Check us out December 11th, 5:30
- 0:32PM Denver time. And I don't plan this.
- 0:39Look, we're going to have our third Gil Athletics Connections
- 0:42podcast alum in a row. Please introduce yourself, Sir.
- 0:46Charles Ryan, director of track and field at San Jose State
- 0:48University. See.
- 0:49I appreciate you speaking up and in the mic.
- 0:52Some of them are. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:53You got some experience with this?
- 0:54I mean we we do this on occasion every now and.
- 0:56Then, so let's talk about that a little bit.
- 0:58Okay, very impressed. You're an OG because you got a
- 1:01you got a new guy now with the governor before originals.
- 1:06I'm so impressed with because you know, I have experience with
- 1:09this. It's real easy.
- 1:11Actually. It's hard, but it's easy to
- 1:13start a show. Yes, it's extremely hard to be
- 1:15going three years on. I you're you're as shocked as I
- 1:19am that we are still doing this thing.
- 1:21You know, we started Athletics LLC, you know, during the
- 1:24pandemic when people were looking for something to connect
- 1:27to. And honestly, we're a little
- 1:28bored and going a little stir crazy with, you know, all this
- 1:31free time and you know, it's snowballed into something that
- 1:34that people seem to care about and and seem to be interested in
- 1:37and we enjoy doing it so. As long as they're still
- 1:40interested, we're gonna keep this train rolling.
- 1:42We haven't missed the show in three years.
- 1:43So that is also impressive, cuz for one, the consistency is
- 1:47extremely hard and it's weekly. It's not like you do this
- 1:49monthly. Yeah, every.
- 1:49Week super hard. Every week.
- 1:51And then when you think about the people that are involved, so
- 1:53Charles Ryan is here, by the way, new head coach, director of
- 1:57track and field at San Jose State University, which we're
- 1:59doing. Really cool things and really
- 2:01good for our sport. By the way, I appreciate San
- 2:03Jose, so Charles was on there. Marissa Chu from TCU.
- 2:08Mike Holloway. Do I really have to tell you
- 2:10where he's from? Come from Florida and then.
- 2:12Chris Huffins. I don't know what he's doing
- 2:14there, but he's there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:17The executive producer asked. Yeah.
- 2:18Oh my gosh. If y'all say EP1 more time I'm
- 2:21gonna throw. But you got to check them out on
- 2:23every Friday night on YouTube. So right here where you are
- 2:26right now on YouTube live. Check it out every Friday.
- 2:29When Marissa is on point, she's you know.
- 2:32That's not always Chewy's fault. No, no, that's true.
- 2:34But it does get done. It's.
- 2:36Worse, it's 2% of the time it doesn't.
- 2:38That's right. It's amazing.
- 2:40So they have a video component, which they do an amazing job.
- 2:43Great intro and outro by the great new Don Chic, who I've got
- 2:46a surprise coming up in 2023. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:49I like it. They do an amazing job and then
- 2:52we're so gracious, so humble they allow us to take the audio
- 2:56version. So we just stripped the audio
- 2:58from it and we run it about. Two weeks later, for people who
- 3:00don't want to watch on YouTube, but it's still to me, it was
- 3:03there was so much valuable information getting kicked out.
- 3:05It was like, how do I expand? Like how do I make more people
- 3:09be able to listen to the topics that you guys talk?
- 3:10About no, it's been really fun and we've always most of the
- 3:14topics that we tackle we discussed amongst ourselves and
- 3:17figure out what we want to talk about, but we take suggestions
- 3:20from the audience and send us Dms and.
- 3:24And Instagram messages and all that stuff.
- 3:26So it's really, you know, it's us on the show, but we try to
- 3:29make it like it's about, you know, the community, the larger
- 3:32community that cares about our sports.
- 3:33So if you got questions, if you got thoughts and there's things
- 3:36you want us to get into, send us, send it our way, we'll do.
- 3:39It and the easiest way to do that, if you don't know how to
- 3:40get a hold of these guys, just go to the YouTube channel.
- 3:43Absolutely right there in the comments.
- 3:44Right there in the comments. Great job of reading those
- 3:46three. I've heard you comment about the
- 3:48comments. Oh yeah, they actually do read,
- 3:50though. That's.
- 3:50Another cool thing as far as that no, no end insight.
- 3:53There's no talk. About No, no, no.
- 3:55No. No, there's no end insight.
- 3:56Nobody has been offered any, you know, significant financial
- 3:59compensation to go off and do their own show or anything like
- 4:02that, so. I'm shocked.
- 4:03It's. It's no we we all really, really
- 4:06enjoy it. And you know, we were the the
- 4:09governor, aka Kareem St. Thompson, had to replace me one
- 4:13day. Because that's right.
- 4:14My son was being born, and so he.
- 4:17Did a great job and we're like, well, we just need to keep him
- 4:19in there. So it went from 4:00 to 5:00 and
- 4:21it's been that way and it's going to stay that way.
- 4:23Like we all really enjoy doing. We have moved mountains and all
- 4:27kind of things to get the show done weekly.
- 4:29At one point we were in four different time zones.
- 4:31Throughout the world. That was fun.
- 4:33That was an interesting during the Olympics.
- 4:35That was crazy, I'll tell you. What?
- 4:38As impressed as I am as the consistency, you guys have had a
- 4:41special shout out to Mouse. Yes, through the Olympics.
- 4:44So over there. Through the Olympics.
- 4:46Through World Championships. Time zones, Yeah.
- 4:49Super tired. He was a little responsible for
- 4:51things, yeah, and never missed a show.
- 4:54And that's what I love about. What you guys are doing there,
- 4:56you're showing a different part, a part that some people think
- 4:59they shouldn't be involved, like, oh, that's that's big boy
- 5:01stuff or whatever over there, right?
- 5:03I love that you kind of, you guys kind of pull that curtain
- 5:05back and like, hey, we're going to bear it all, good and bad.
- 5:07We're going to talk about it all.
- 5:08Yeah, there's really no, there's no track and field or other any
- 5:11other subject for that matter, that it's off limits.
- 5:13We don't really run from everything.
- 5:15We try to keep things current and up to date with whatever is
- 5:18going on within the culture and the sport and you know, like I
- 5:21said, people seem to enjoy it so.
- 5:23As long as there's an audience for it, we'll keep rocking it,
- 5:26that's right. That's a great point.
- 5:27So we didn't talk about this, but I do want to talk about it
- 5:29just a little bit. Tell us about how you enjoying
- 5:32not being a head coach, Cuz you've done that.
- 5:34I have, yeah. I think the program that you
- 5:36took over is of such historical significance.
- 5:39It's a different head coaching job.
- 5:41How has it been and how are you enjoying it with struggles?
- 5:44I'm having a ball with it. A lot of people thought that.
- 5:47You know the resurrection of Speed City and all that other
- 5:50stuff and given historical context and then canceling the
- 5:53program and what it's been in the 20 tens on.
- 5:55It was an impossible job. I never really saw it that way.
- 5:58I saw it as a huge opportunity and I'm from the Bay Area.
- 6:01So it's it's a little bit, you know, more special for me.
- 6:05I'm. I'm honored to be in the chair.
- 6:06I'm having a ball doing it. We had an incredible year.
- 6:09One recruiting class. We set some program records last
- 6:12year we sent six kids to regionals.
- 6:14We're trying to triple that, you know, for this upcoming year.
- 6:17We're just trying to, you know, be relevant at on the national
- 6:20level because if you're going to do this job this way, that's the
- 6:23only way it's going to play. You know, I have a fantastic
- 6:27staff. I was able to get, as I've said
- 6:29before, my number one draft picks it at every at every
- 6:32position. You know, Ernie, TJ and
- 6:34Charmaine are absolutely killing it for me.
- 6:36And you know we're having, we're having a ball, it's it's mostly
- 6:39a California Central team. It's going to stay that way.
- 6:42But we do recruit all over the world and obviously out of
- 6:44state. It's it's coming together really
- 6:46nicely and if the team is about 85% freshman right now, so if if
- 6:50the babies can run like adults. We all know how that goes by
- 6:53the. Way we're we're going to have a
- 6:54lot of noise to make this year if they can grow up fast and so
- 6:57we're having. It compliment I can give you is
- 6:59I think they got the right person for the job.
- 7:01Well, I appreciate. It just seeing what you've done
- 7:02in the first year and as you now evolve into the second year they
- 7:06they kudos to the administration for pulling the right lever here
- 7:10and getting. Best administration I've ever
- 7:11worked for. Jeff Konia and his leadership
- 7:13team are phenomenal from. Clients all the way down,
- 7:16they've literally never told me no for anything I've asked and
- 7:20they they find answers, they find solutions and when you're
- 7:23working for solutions based people, you can get a lot of
- 7:26things accomplished. Well, like I mentioned.
- 7:29Thomas said Chuck's looks. Depends on how long you've known
- 7:32me, you. Know what I mean?
- 7:34He was a He's been on the Gill Athletics Connections podcast.
- 7:36So whatever app you use, just Google his name or search his
- 7:39name. I guess you would.
- 7:40And Gill Athletics, It'll pop right up.
- 7:42It's on YouTube as well. He was.
- 7:44You were one of the OG's. I think you were one of the.
- 7:45First, I was one of the early ones.
- 7:47Yeah, for sure. You know, you might be.
- 7:49I haven't done this yet. But I've thought about doing a
- 7:52follow up with certain people because your life has changed.
- 7:55Verbally. Dramatically.
- 7:56From that, so. Everything.
- 7:57But as an alum of the Gill Ethics Missions podcast, we're
- 8:00allowing only for alums. I grilled you for a good two
- 8:04hours. It was during COVID.
- 8:05I'm never in the apartment. We get to flip the script
- 8:09tonight. You get to ask me one question
- 8:11and only one question. One question.
- 8:13No holds far. There's no headed button or
- 8:14anything though, so. Now, honestly, I would like to
- 8:18know. As a person who jumped into this
- 8:21podcast space and obviously have crushed it, what's that
- 8:24experience like been for you? What has been the best part of?
- 8:28To me, I see what you do as a give back to the sport.
- 8:30So what's been the best piece of this for you?
- 8:32Yeah, I didn't. Something that's happened that I
- 8:34didn't, I wasn't aware that would happen.
- 8:37Is you know, I interview these coaches of all different levels,
- 8:40right? So from Division One
- 8:41professional high school club, I mean just all the gamut guys,
- 8:45gals, black, white, Asian all around, right?
- 8:48And I knew focusing on their journey would be pretty cool.
- 8:51Like how did they go to this one place?
- 8:52Why did they go to this one place?
- 8:54What mentors poured into them? I did not expect that as a on
- 8:58the business side as a track and field manufacturer that I would
- 9:01get any much or any like things that would help me.
- 9:06And there were a couple of ones. It was nerve wracking when we
- 9:18did it as well. And I tell you, one that really
- 9:09stuck out early is when I interviewed Brooks Johnson and
- 9:14which was very nerve wracking for me because there were
- 9:17several. Yeah, shout out to Brooks.
- 9:21We love Brooks. But yes, Brooks is an
- 9:24interesting interview. For sure, but love him and what
- 9:27a godsend that we have him here on this earth and in the track
- 9:30and field, but he really talked about how he.
- 9:34Thinks about coaching, not that he's not a Sprint coach, he's
- 9:36not a distance coach and just the general and how you have to
- 9:39like not have limitations because we brought up the high
- 9:41jump men's world record and I was like would you ever.
- 9:43I mean it's not getting to get broken.
- 9:45He's like, of course it is. He's like that's what they said
- 9:47before they jumped it. And so just the thought process
- 9:51that he and company company really changed me and then he
- 9:54brought in a quote again that really changed me in regards to
- 9:58helping not judge other people. He brought up George Williams
- 10:01quote of if you're not in the huddle, you don't know the play.
- 10:04Indeed. And so it was awesome to go get
- 10:07George Williams on the podcast and hear the man say it.
- 10:09And just that, like, when I think about judging people for
- 10:13whatever reason, like, oh man, I can't believe they didn't choose
- 10:15Gila Putman or I can't believe my kid did that.
- 10:17It's like, oh, you know what? I don't know.
- 10:19I don't know what's going on. I don't know.
- 10:21I don't know. So it helps me like how do I
- 10:23meet you where you are today, knowing that I don't know.
- 10:26Everything that's going on here today, and you may jump at me
- 10:29for some reason. I've got coaches jump at me and
- 10:31I used to get like defensive and now it's like maybe something
- 10:34happened. Maybe something's going on
- 10:35personally. Maybe they just also the truth
- 10:37doesn't excuse what they did, but it helps me to not judge
- 10:41them. So that's what I've gotten out
- 10:42of it, man. It's been it's been an amazing
- 10:44journey. Well, I listen, we appreciate
- 10:45everything you're doing, man. You're doing a hell of a job.
- 10:47You keep yours going, we're going to keep ours going,
- 10:49everybody. We're in.
- 10:51Let's get selfie to end this man.
- 10:52Thank you so much. Awesome man.
- 10:57Thanks, Joe. Appreciate you brother.
- 10:58Have a good night. One day I'm gonna get an invite
