Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Angels $4B record sale, Sal Stewart’s ROY case, Aaron Judge nearing return?
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome, everyone, to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal, and I'm welcoming back our friend and colleague,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Alana Rizzo. Alana, we've got a ton to get to today.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We want to get into the angel sale and get
- 0:19Speaker 1: into it at some length. But first, we have another
- 0:22Speaker 1: topic to talk about, and I'll let you kick it
- 0:24Speaker 1: off from here.
- 0:25Speaker 2: All right, Ken, good to be with you as always.
- 0:27Speaker 2: The story of the week, you mentioned it. Undoubtedly, Artie
- 0:30Speaker 2: Moreno selling the Angels to Stan Kroenke. We're going to
- 0:32Speaker 2: get into that. However, I wanted to shine a light
- 0:35Speaker 2: on a player that maybe otherwise doesn't get enough spotlight
- 0:39Speaker 2: in the modern analytical game. That is a man by
- 0:41Speaker 2: the name of Sal Stewart and somebody that you just
- 0:44Speaker 2: had a column on. Tell me more.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Right. Well, I wrote today about why he deserves NL
- 0:49Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year. And I guess with the injury
- 0:50Speaker 1: to J.J. Weatherholt, It's less of a question than maybe
- 0:54Speaker 1: it was two weeks ago. Weather holds out. He's expected
- 0:57Speaker 1: back this season. He's got a wrist issue. We'll see
- 1:00Speaker 1: if that happens. And maybe Carson Bench or Nolan McClain
- 1:03Speaker 1: or some other rookie has a huge end-of-the-season surge. And
- 1:07Speaker 1: at that point, all right, maybe Sal Stewart has a
- 1:09Speaker 1: legitimate challenger. But the reason I wrote this was here's
- 1:13Speaker 1: a guy, a rookie, who leads the major leagues in RBIs.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Only two rookies previously have done that. One was Walt Williams,
- 1:22Speaker 1: the other was Walt Dropo, and that's quite a feat.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And yet, in the era that we're in now, with
- 1:29Speaker 1: our emphasis on modern analytics, which are often more telling
- 1:33Speaker 1: than RBIs and batting average and some of the old
- 1:36Speaker 1: school stats, my fear is that his accomplishments would get lost. Now,
- 1:42Speaker 1: RBIs are context dependent. In other words, they depend on
- 1:47Speaker 1: what the teammates are doing, your teammates are doing, what
- 1:50Speaker 1: the game situations are, and certainly Sal Stewart has more
- 1:54Speaker 1: opportunities than, say, J.J. Weatherholt or Carson Bench. One of
- 1:58Speaker 1: the reasons he has more opportunities is because the Reds
- 2:01Speaker 1: have trusted him from the start of the season to
- 2:04Speaker 1: hit in the middle of the order or a prime
- 2:07Speaker 1: upper position in the order as well. He was clean
- 2:10Speaker 1: up opening day. So, to me, this is something that
- 2:15Speaker 1: is a little different than the usual rookie of the
- 2:17Speaker 1: year candidacy, and right now, the way voters go about this.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And I'm one of them. We look at war, wins
- 2:24Speaker 1: above replacement quite seriously and should. That's a starting point
- 2:28Speaker 1: often for these discussions. It is not the end all
- 2:32Speaker 1: be all. And with Stewart, his war is not going
- 2:35Speaker 1: to be great because he's kind of bounced between positions,
- 2:38Speaker 1: hasn't played one. And also first base is his main position.
- 2:42Speaker 1: That's a position he barely played in the minors. He's
- 2:44Speaker 1: kind of learning it on the fly. So he's not
- 2:46Speaker 1: going to have the defensive prowess that Weatherholt does or
- 2:50Speaker 1: even Bench. But here's a guy who's doing some rare
- 2:53Speaker 1: things offensively. And I talked to Joey Votto for this article,
- 2:56Speaker 1: for Justin Turner, Nolan Arenado, and just about the whole
- 3:00Speaker 1: idea that RBIs still do matter. Joey doesn't necessarily think
- 3:04Speaker 1: so the way the others do, but they do matter.
- 3:09Speaker 2: All right, let me ask you this. You said you
- 3:10Speaker 2: talked to Joey Votto about this, and he did say
- 3:13Speaker 2: something in terms of A quote that he said in
- 3:16Speaker 2: this article, he said, if, for example, they plugged him
- 3:19Speaker 2: in at second base all year, he would have gotten
- 3:21Speaker 2: the defensive benefit, would have gotten the reps at the position.
- 3:23Speaker 2: He would have been probably the best offensive player at
- 3:26Speaker 2: that position. That's a lot of the reason why I
- 3:28Speaker 2: think he's the rookie of the year. It just so
- 3:30Speaker 2: happens they're putting him in a few different positions, which
- 3:33Speaker 2: makes it quite a bit harder to adjust to the game.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I agree with them on that, but I also wanted
- 3:39Speaker 2: to ask you, Ken, about when or why did RBI
- 3:43Speaker 2: stop mattering, so to speak? Now, Joey Votto is obviously
- 3:46Speaker 2: talking about war there, but why did RBIs all of
- 3:48Speaker 2: a sudden get less of an importance if they did?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Well, they certainly are not looked at the same way
- 3:55Speaker 1: they once were. And I kind of touched on it
- 3:58Speaker 1: a lot when I described how RBIs are so context-dependent.
- 4:02Speaker 1: and how it depends on what others are doing and
- 4:05Speaker 1: the game situations and the opportunities. We all understand that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And there are certain individual statistics on base percentage, slugging percentage,
- 4:14Speaker 1: all the ones that are based or have park adjustments. Yes,
- 4:19Speaker 1: they're more meaningful individual offensive statistics. What I have a
- 4:23Speaker 1: bit of a problem with is that this is about
- 4:27Speaker 1: winning baseball games. It's about scoring more runs than the
- 4:30Speaker 1: other team. And people who do that, While I know
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's not necessarily a repeatable skill year to year, driving
- 4:35Speaker 1: in runs, certain players can do it better than others.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Certain players have a knack for doing it. And again,
- 4:42Speaker 1: it seems like Stewart certainly is one of those players.
- 4:45Speaker 1: All right.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Certainly a cool story. You can read the entire thing
- 4:48Speaker 2: in its entirety on The Athletic. A great story there
- 4:51Speaker 2: by Ken Rosenthal. One more piece of business. Ken is
- 4:54Speaker 2: a busy man this week, as always. Let's talk about
- 4:57Speaker 2: it in On Deck, presented by Fox One. All right, Ken,
- 5:05Speaker 2: you have two games this week. The first one is
- 5:07Speaker 2: Brewers at the Cubs. Logan Henderson is the latest Brewers
- 5:12Speaker 2: pitching revelation. Tell me more.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Logan Henderson is a unique pitcher. And MLB.com had a
- 5:19Speaker 1: terrific story, I believe it was last week, about how
- 5:21Speaker 1: his changeup is like the Devin Williams changeup. It's this
- 5:25Speaker 1: high spin changeup that is rare among changeups. And his
- 5:28Speaker 1: fastball also has interesting movement. And in talking to Brewers
- 5:32Speaker 1: pitching coach Chris Hook yesterday about Henderson, He made the
- 5:35Speaker 1: point that this guy is fearless. He is someone who
- 5:39Speaker 1: will make any pitch at any time. And for a
- 5:42Speaker 1: young pitcher, that's quite impressive. Here's a guy who has
- 5:45Speaker 1: still five years of control remaining. That's why the Brewers
- 5:48Speaker 1: wouldn't trade him for Tarek Skubal. And he has been,
- 5:52Speaker 1: along with Mizorowski, one of the best pitchers on their staff.
- 5:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:57Speaker 2: You have another game coming up. It is the Yankees
- 6:01Speaker 2: at the Padres this week in the Probables, Ken. Carlos
- 6:04Speaker 2: Rodon versus Robbie Ray. You are on the broadcast, of course,
- 6:07Speaker 2: on Saturday. And Aaron Judge, I believe, is nearing a return.
- 6:11Speaker 2: What more can you tell us?
- 6:13Speaker 1: He is nearing a return. And we talked about this
- 6:15Speaker 1: last week on our broadcast when we had the Yankees
- 6:17Speaker 1: and Red Sox. He went on this road trip to
- 6:20Speaker 1: the West Coast, which started in Anaheim and now will
- 6:23Speaker 1: continue to San Diego. And It seems that he's going
- 6:28Speaker 1: to be back on the next homestand if everything goes smoothly.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Now the Yankees return home next week. They play the
- 6:33Speaker 1: Rockies first and then the Mets in a series that
- 6:36Speaker 1: starts on 9-11. The two New York teams playing on 9-11,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the 25th anniversary. It's going to be something else. And
- 6:44Speaker 1: who knows when he'll be back exactly, but it's expected
- 6:48Speaker 1: next week. And then the Yankees offense, which has shown
- 6:51Speaker 1: more life of late, will look that much better.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I mean, he certainly only is going to make the
- 6:56Speaker 2: team better. I'm sure everybody would love to have Aaron
- 6:59Speaker 2: Judge back. The Padres, though, Ken, may now likely be
- 7:02Speaker 2: without starter Joe Musgrove for the season. He hasn't pitched
- 7:06Speaker 2: since October 2nd of 2024, almost two years ago.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and he had another setback just the other day
- 7:13Speaker 1: in which he didn't just feel right coming out of
- 7:15Speaker 1: his latest appearance in his rehabilitation assignment. And It's always interesting, Alana,
- 7:22Speaker 1: teams count on guys coming back. And you hear, well,
- 7:24Speaker 1: we're going to get this guy back, this guy back.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It's going to be like an addition at the trade deadline.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We hear it all the time. The Padres have been
- 7:30Speaker 1: missing Musgrove and Nick Pavetta, and they're not back yet.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And who knows if they come back, what contribution they
- 7:37Speaker 1: will even be able to make in a positive way.
- 7:40Speaker 1: So the Padres at the deadline, this is why they
- 7:42Speaker 1: added Robbie Ray and Casey Mize, because of the uncertainty.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And I'm sure Padres fans are frustrated because they're This
- 7:49Speaker 1: team with Musgrove and Pavetta looks a lot better even
- 7:54Speaker 1: than it does now. And they're still right in the
- 7:55Speaker 1: thick of this thing. My goodness. They're right in the
- 7:58Speaker 1: NL wildcard race. But if those two guys have been healthy,
- 8:01Speaker 1: who knows what this club might have looked like.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Ken, what do you think in terms of the Padres
- 8:06Speaker 2: kind of trying to piece that rotation together? You said
- 8:09Speaker 2: they're right in the thick of things. I mean, do
- 8:11Speaker 2: they have enough pitching? Let's just assume they get into
- 8:13Speaker 2: the postseason, obviously, via the wildcard. Do they have enough
- 8:15Speaker 2: pitching to get deeper?
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't know. Mize has not been that great for them.
- 8:21Speaker 1: They have gotten better work out of Vasquez and Buehler
- 8:24Speaker 1: of late, and Michael King has been a legitimate ace
- 8:27Speaker 1: all season long. And of course, with the Padres, the
- 8:30Speaker 1: unique thing about their club is they don't need necessarily
- 8:34Speaker 1: great starting pitching because once they start lining up the relievers,
- 8:37Speaker 1: best bullpen in baseball, it's generally over if they have
- 8:41Speaker 1: a lead. So they're a little bit different in that sense.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Do they have enough to Make a deep postseason push?
- 8:48Speaker 1: You would think not, but this is a team that
- 8:53Speaker 1: is quite accomplished. Tatis and Merrill have come back from
- 8:56Speaker 1: where they were earlier in the season when they were
- 8:58Speaker 1: struggling so badly. They're now contributing to Tatis in a
- 9:01Speaker 1: big way. Manny Machado has not been quite the same.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Ty France having an amazing year. I never count them out,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and it's interesting now Ethan Salas is up as a
- 9:10Speaker 1: 20-year-old catcher. I don't know how much they're going to
- 9:13Speaker 1: use him, but there is talent there. There is postseason
- 9:16Speaker 1: experience there, and I just do not rule them out
- 9:20Speaker 1: in any postseason series going forward. They're not as strong, perhaps,
- 9:23Speaker 1: as they would like to be, but they're still a
- 9:26Speaker 1: pretty formidable group.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Luis Robert Jr., Ken, they put a waiver claim on him.
- 9:31Speaker 2: They ended up losing him to the Orioles. How close
- 9:33Speaker 2: were they to getting him?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Well, you know how that goes, Alana, with the waiver claims.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's in reverse order of standings, and the Orioles had
- 9:41Speaker 1: a worse record than the Padres, so that did it.
- 9:45Speaker 1: The Padres were not close because the Orioles grabbed him
- 9:48Speaker 1: before they had a chance. So their interest is telling.
- 9:51Speaker 1: They've been looking for a right-handed hitting outfielder, of course,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but it just didn't happen for them. All right.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Right now, the Padres, just a half game. out, Ken,
- 10:00Speaker 2: as you know, in that third wild card spot in
- 10:03Speaker 2: the National League. MLB on Fox is streaming on Fox One.

- 10:28Speaker 2: free trial today at fox1. com. It is time now for
- 10:38Speaker 2: the inside dish and the big topic of conversation around
- 10:42Speaker 2: the sport, Ken, is the sale of the Angels. It
- 10:45Speaker 2: looks like Stan Kroenke taking another team. I think he
- 10:48Speaker 2: has six now over the course of two continents, but
- 10:51Speaker 2: it's good for baseball, I think. A lot of people
- 10:53Speaker 2: wanted the Angels to be sold. Artie Moreno finally did it.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Why was now the time?
- 10:57Speaker 1: Alana, that is the question that I have had ever
- 11:01Speaker 1: since we heard this. My assumption is was that Artie Moreno,
- 11:05Speaker 1: one of the labor hawks, a guy who has wanted
- 11:08Speaker 1: a salary cap, would wait to see the outcome of
- 11:12Speaker 1: the labor negotiations in hope of getting a salary cap,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and then having his franchise value escalated, and then he
- 11:19Speaker 1: would sell at that point. That is what I thought
- 11:22Speaker 1: his plan would be. Other owners, I believe, have that plan,
- 11:25Speaker 1: that they want a cap, and the cap would enhance
- 11:28Speaker 1: their franchise values, and then boom, they cash out. Well,
- 11:32Speaker 1: we might not get a cap, but That was not
- 11:34Speaker 1: what I was thinking that Artie had in mind. So
- 11:38Speaker 1: to do it now with a month left in the
- 11:40Speaker 1: season before the labor negotiations really even get going, it
- 11:44Speaker 1: was a shock. And remember, he backed out three years
- 11:48Speaker 1: ago when he had the team on the market, took
- 11:51Speaker 1: them off the market. And yet it seems here a
- 11:55Speaker 1: couple of things happened. One, he got his price, $ 4 billion,
- 11:58Speaker 1: record price for a major league team. He remains a
- 12:01Speaker 1: minority owner. But at the same time, he wanted out,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and perhaps, and this is one theory I heard, because
- 12:08Speaker 1: it had been such a negative atmosphere in that ballpark
- 12:11Speaker 1: and has been all season long. You see the tarps
- 12:14Speaker 1: off crowd. You see what they're chanting. Some of it's
- 12:17Speaker 1: profane toward Artie, and maybe he just decided it was
- 12:20Speaker 1: all just too much. Now, it seems to me that's
- 12:23Speaker 1: a secondary reason behind the $ 4 billion, but he's 80
- 12:27Speaker 1: years old, and he may have just decided, I don't
- 12:29Speaker 1: need this. Now, the bigger thing here, is what this
- 12:33Speaker 1: does for the Angels. And I wrote the other day,
- 12:35Speaker 1: this is Independence Day, because Artie Moreno, running them into
- 12:39Speaker 1: the ground would be too strong a statement, but he
- 12:41Speaker 1: certainly has not run a very effective operation the past
- 12:44Speaker 1: several years. Early on, it was good, but they've got
- 12:47Speaker 1: a string of losing seasons now and no direction. Now,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Kroenke comes in. He's obviously got money. He's been successful
- 12:56Speaker 1: in other sports. He lets his front office people and
- 12:59Speaker 1: management do their jobs without interfering, which is not something
- 13:03Speaker 1: Artie did. He was frequently interfering. It seems to me
- 13:07Speaker 1: that they're going to be in a much better place.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And this team is a sleeping giant. They play in
- 13:13Speaker 1: one of the largest markets in the country, for goodness sake.
- 13:16Speaker 1: They play in one of the wealthiest counties, Orange County,
- 13:19Speaker 1: in the country. And they should be a team that
- 13:21Speaker 1: is successful year after year, bidding for the top free agents,
- 13:25Speaker 1: putting together the kind of machine that the Dodgers have.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Now with Kroenke, and you mentioned a lot of his
- 13:31Speaker 1: success in other sports, so many other sports, it would
- 13:34Speaker 1: seem that there is hope that that will happen. It
- 13:36Speaker 1: would seem, too, that there is hope that perhaps they'll
- 13:38Speaker 1: get a new ballpark in time, and everything is going
- 13:43Speaker 1: upward from here.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I have another question. I have a couple of other questions.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Let's start with the new ballpark first. Could it be
- 13:50Speaker 2: a situation, Ken, when Stan Kroenke, if he doesn't get
- 13:53Speaker 2: a new ballpark in Anaheim, that he moves the team
- 13:57Speaker 2: like he did with the Rams?
- 14:01Speaker 1: Anything's possible, right? And I know there's been speculation already,
- 14:05Speaker 1: put a team up in that area, but it seems
- 14:08Speaker 1: to me, and when I mean that area, the SoFi
- 14:12Speaker 1: area in LA, but it seems to me, though, that
- 14:14Speaker 1: he wants a team in Anaheim. He wants them there.
- 14:17Speaker 1: There's a good amount of distance from Los Angeles. It's
- 14:19Speaker 1: a separate market in so many ways. So the idea
- 14:24Speaker 1: of moving it, yeah, he might use that as a
- 14:26Speaker 1: threat to get what he wants in Anaheim. But to me,
- 14:30Speaker 1: the deal is in Anaheim. And for people who haven't
- 14:33Speaker 1: been in that stadium, that stadium is in an area
- 14:37Speaker 1: where you can build quite a bit around it. There's
- 14:39Speaker 1: some space there. There's a hockey arena there, of course.
- 14:42Speaker 1: But If they want to build something like the Battery,
- 14:44Speaker 1: this is something that Artie Moreno wanted to do years ago.
- 14:48Speaker 1: The Battery in Atlanta, duplicate that. They can do that.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And that would seem to me to be the plan.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So therefore, not only is the stadium a goldmine, the
- 14:57Speaker 1: surrounding area is a goldmine. And bingo, here we go.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, location, location, location. Real estate is all the rage
- 15:05Speaker 2: in that area. Let me ask you this, Ken. How
- 15:07Speaker 2: do the Angels sell for more than the Padres? $ 4 billion.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I could not believe that number.
- 15:14Speaker 1: They sell for more than the Padres because they are
- 15:16Speaker 1: arguably in a bigger market. They are in a bigger market.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Television market-wise, it's not even close. San Diego is one
- 15:22Speaker 1: of the smaller television markets in baseball. The Padres have
- 15:25Speaker 1: built a very successful operation. They play in a beautiful ballpark.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And that is why they sold for the number that
- 15:31Speaker 1: they did. And the Angels are a team, again, in
- 15:36Speaker 1: the Los Angeles area, Southern California market. And despite their
- 15:41Speaker 1: lack of success... What Kroenke sees is this potential that
- 15:44Speaker 1: we just discussed, Alana, and that potential is vast. No
- 15:49Speaker 1: matter what economic system comes into play after these collective
- 15:53Speaker 1: bargaining negotiations are over, the Angels are going to be
- 15:56Speaker 1: in a great spot. And that's what he sees. And
- 15:59Speaker 1: I know from the sheer successes of the two franchises,
- 16:03Speaker 1: when you compare them, you would say, well, the Padres
- 16:05Speaker 1: should be worth more, but it's the market size that
- 16:08Speaker 1: dictates the price.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Ken, how, if at all, do these change in ownerships,
- 16:13Speaker 2: new ownership groups, the Angels and the Padres, affect the
- 16:16Speaker 2: upcoming collective bargaining agreement?
- 16:19Speaker 1: That too is a good question, Alana. And I would
- 16:21Speaker 1: say probably not at all. The owners want a cap
- 16:26Speaker 1: and they want a cap to enhance franchise values. Now
- 16:29Speaker 1: you might say, well, Padres just sold for a record,
- 16:32Speaker 1: then the Angels topped their record. What's the problem? The
- 16:35Speaker 1: owners would say, And I'm not necessarily agreeing with their
- 16:38Speaker 1: argument for a cap. You know that. But here's their argument.
- 16:41Speaker 1: That other teams in smaller markets are not in position
- 16:46Speaker 1: to sell for these kinds of numbers. And that a
- 16:49Speaker 1: cap would give owners and teams cost certainty. And once
- 16:53Speaker 1: they have that cost certainty, then, of course, they become
- 16:57Speaker 1: more valuable. Obviously, we all understand that argument. We all
- 17:01Speaker 1: understand where the owners are going with this. I disagree completely.
- 17:05Speaker 1: that a cap is necessary. I do believe, and I've
- 17:09Speaker 1: said this repeatedly, I am not against the small market
- 17:12Speaker 1: teams getting a benefit or more of a benefit. They
- 17:15Speaker 1: deserve that. They need that. The disparity between the large
- 17:19Speaker 1: market revenues and small market revenues are too vast. What
- 17:22Speaker 1: I have said repeatedly is that a cap is not
- 17:25Speaker 1: needed to address those disparities. You can institute a cap
- 17:29Speaker 1: yes and you would address it you can do it
- 17:31Speaker 1: in other ways without tearing down your sport and shutting
- 17:34Speaker 1: it down for a year or whatever it's going to
- 17:36Speaker 1: be so that's my argument but the owners again they
- 17:39Speaker 1: want the cap they say for competitive balance and i
- 17:43Speaker 1: understand that position even though i don't agree with it
- 17:46Speaker 1: the real reason as we all know is they want
- 17:48Speaker 1: their franchise values to escalate and it cannot happen across
- 17:53Speaker 1: the sport in their opinion without some kind of cost certainty.
- 17:57Speaker 2: There's a lot of questions, Ken, in the chat in
- 18:00Speaker 2: terms of this whole sale. And a lot of folks
- 18:03Speaker 2: are asking, and they want to ask you, and we
- 18:05Speaker 2: will have Grill and Ken in a moment, but a
- 18:07Speaker 2: lot of folks want to ask you, how much do
- 18:09Speaker 2: you think the fans had a role in this? I mean,
- 18:14Speaker 2: every single night they were calling for Artie to sell
- 18:17Speaker 2: the team, those types of season, those types of games.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I mean, you can see it here. They were chanting
- 18:21Speaker 2: their displeasure. How much did they have a say in it.
- 18:24Speaker 1: If at all? I touched on this earlier, and we
- 18:29Speaker 1: all know the atmosphere at the ballpark for Artie Moreno
- 18:32Speaker 1: has not been good. And I talked to someone yesterday
- 18:34Speaker 1: who said he had heard from Moreno that, yeah, the
- 18:39Speaker 1: negative atmosphere did affect him and did kind of prompt
- 18:43Speaker 1: him to do this now. I still would say the
- 18:46Speaker 1: price mattered more than anything. going on in the ballpark.
- 18:50Speaker 1: If he hadn't gotten $ 4 billion, it's not like he
- 18:52Speaker 1: was going to sell for $ 3 billion and not get
- 18:55Speaker 1: what he wants. He had to get what he wanted.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Once he got the price that he wanted, then I
- 19:01Speaker 1: would think maybe he thought, okay, enough's enough. I don't
- 19:05Speaker 1: need this. My family doesn't need this. So maybe the
- 19:08Speaker 1: fan revolt, and it was a fan revolt, had a
- 19:11Speaker 1: positive effect on him in terms of compelling him to
- 19:16Speaker 1: sell the team. And if so, good for the fans.
- 19:19Speaker 2: No doubt about it. One thing, last thing. What does
- 19:22Speaker 2: this mean for Mike Trout?
- 19:25Speaker 1: I would say nothing. And Mike Trout has been exceedingly
- 19:28Speaker 1: loyal to the Angels, to the criticism of some who
- 19:31Speaker 1: believe he should want to play for a contender. He's
- 19:34Speaker 1: refused to waive his no trade clause or even entertain
- 19:37Speaker 1: a trade. And part of his loyalty stemmed from Artie
- 19:41Speaker 1: Moreno giving him two massive contracts. He was loyal to
- 19:44Speaker 1: the person who paid him. I don't expect this to
- 19:47Speaker 1: change under Kroenke because now, if you're Mike Trout, you see,
- 19:53Speaker 1: even at age 35, the chance for this thing to
- 19:55Speaker 1: get real good real quickly. And I would expect that Trout,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and he has basically said this, he wants to stay still.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And why would you think that he would have a
- 20:05Speaker 1: different opinion? Here, they finally have hope. Now he's going
- 20:09Speaker 1: to leave? No. Now is the time to stay and
- 20:12Speaker 1: maybe be a part of something special, get to the postseason,
- 20:16Speaker 1: and actually, for the first time in Mike Trout's career,
- 20:18Speaker 1: maybe even win a postseason game.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Finally, for Mike Trout, he is an owner that wants
- 20:25Speaker 2: to win. Great information, Ken. We appreciate it very much. Next,
- 20:29Speaker 2: we crown our Dudes and Dorks of the Week right
- 20:31Speaker 2: after this.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Do you remember growing up and seeing that something was
- 20:36Speaker 3: sold out and it was literally sold out and you
- 20:38Speaker 3: couldn't get a ticket?
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yes. That's not a thing anymore.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Cried many times over that, Scott. But now we have SeatGeek.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Even if it says sold out, you can find that
- 20:45Speaker 4: perfect seat for you.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Yep.
- 20:47Speaker 3: The official ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball is SeatGeek

- 20:57Speaker 3: ball or whatever you're going to game for. You want
- 21:00Speaker 3: to see a particular pitcher. Eventually, playoff tickets, same thing, right?
- 21:03Speaker 3: Playoff tickets generally sold out.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Don't worry.
- 21:06Speaker 3: SeatGeek has the spot.

- 22:02Speaker 1: I'm the dude, so that's what you call me.
- 22:07Speaker 2: All right, Ken, time for Dude and Dork of the Week.
- 22:09Speaker 2: My dude is Eugenio Suarez. Congratulations to him. He was
- 22:13Speaker 2: away from the Reds for a couple of days for
- 22:15Speaker 2: good reason. He took and passed his citizenship test. He
- 22:18Speaker 2: is now an official citizen of the United States of America.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Very proud of him. Very cool. Obviously studied for it.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Did all the things that he needed to do. Did
- 22:27Speaker 2: it the right way. Congrats to him.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Absolutely one of my favorite guys. My Dude of the Week,
- 22:33Speaker 1: Colton Couser. In case you missed it, Catch he made
- 22:36Speaker 1: in Colorado the other night was one of the great
- 22:39Speaker 1: catches you'll ever see. And we see a lot of
- 22:41Speaker 1: great catches all the time in Major League Baseball. So
- 22:43Speaker 1: many gifted outfielders. This catch, though, prevented a walk-off home
- 22:48Speaker 1: run by Jake McCarthy and ended the game. So it
- 22:52Speaker 1: was the pivotal moment in the game, the ultimate moment.
- 22:55Speaker 1: It was literally do or die. Make the catch, you win.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Don't make the catch, you don't win. The Orioles won.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, good job, Colton Kazler, your Ken's Dude of the Week.
- 23:05Speaker 2: All right, time now for Dork of the Week. My
- 23:13Speaker 2: dork of the week, Ken, is the whole situation with
- 23:16Speaker 2: Cattell Marte not showing up for a game and then
- 23:20Speaker 2: reintroducing himself and apologizing wearing this hat. May the bridges
- 23:24Speaker 2: I burn light the way. I mean, of all the
- 23:27Speaker 2: don't you can't tell me for one second, Ken, that
- 23:29Speaker 2: that wasn't planned. That is just not the way to
- 23:32Speaker 2: go about it. You are my dork of the week
- 23:34Speaker 2: for a variety of reasons, Cattell Marte.
- 23:37Speaker 1: All right, my dork, it's a little bit of a
- 23:39Speaker 1: lighter touch. I want to show you a photo of
- 23:41Speaker 1: a fan the other night. This made me very curious.
- 23:46Speaker 1: He's wearing a Yankees jersey. Now, which way are you
- 23:49Speaker 1: going to go, pal? Pick a lane. And really, I'm
- 23:51Speaker 1: disturbed because this person appears in need of some kind
- 23:54Speaker 1: of help. He has conflicting emotions going on in his
- 23:59Speaker 1: very presence, his very being. So I hope the fan's okay.
- 24:02Speaker 1: And man, two AL East teams and One body? I
- 24:05Speaker 1: don't know.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And also, I don't even think the Orioles and Yankees
- 24:09Speaker 2: were playing in that game. So he's wearing two different
- 24:11Speaker 2: uniforms at a game that doesn't even include the teams.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It's like if you go and wear an Adidas hat
- 24:15Speaker 2: with Reebok shoes and Nike sweatpants. He's just a mess.
- 24:19Speaker 4: All right.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Time now for Grill and Ken really quick. All right.
- 24:28Speaker 2: We don't have a ton of time for this, so
- 24:30Speaker 2: the first question I'm going to ask you is, when
- 24:33Speaker 2: are people going to make a bigger deal about Chris
- 24:36Speaker 2: Sale becoming the next pitcher to 3,000 Ks? Ken, this
- 24:41Speaker 2: question is from Jim Jim Huerta.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I would say Chris Sale has gotten plenty of attention
- 24:46Speaker 1: this year, and he will get attention for this accomplishment
- 24:49Speaker 1: as well, and I wouldn't worry about that. He and
- 24:52Speaker 1: his resurgence have been one of the best stories in
- 24:54Speaker 1: baseball all season long. That performance against the Dodgers, I
- 24:58Speaker 1: believe it was about a week ago, was one of
- 24:59Speaker 1: the great performances this season. And sure, 3,000 strikeouts is coming,
- 25:04Speaker 1: and the Hall of Fame is going to come to
- 25:07Speaker 1: five years after he retires.
- 25:08Speaker 2: No doubt about it. I loved his son being so
- 25:10Speaker 2: psyched that he was coming back out to throw the
- 25:13Speaker 2: ninth inning. All right, this is a question in regards
- 25:16Speaker 2: to Mike Trout. We were just talking about the Angels
- 25:18Speaker 2: and the new ownership. MikeLewis1788 wants to know, is Trout
- 25:22Speaker 2: ever going to be held accountable for his role in
- 25:25Speaker 2: the Angels losing year after year? I'm not sure that's fair,
- 25:28Speaker 2: but he's still one of the faces of the sport
- 25:30Speaker 2: and needs to be treated as such as far as
- 25:32Speaker 2: criticism goes. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I'm
- 25:35Speaker 2: interested in your opinion.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I don't agree with it either, and he is accountable
- 25:40Speaker 1: for his performance. He's been hurt a lot, and certainly
- 25:44Speaker 1: that's been part of it, but is he the reason
- 25:45Speaker 1: the Angels have had losing season after losing season? No.
- 25:49Speaker 1: And Yes, he does deserve any criticism like any player
- 25:52Speaker 1: deserves criticism when warranted. I just don't see that it's warranted.
- 25:57Speaker 1: And he's come back this year. It hasn't been a
- 25:59Speaker 1: great year, but it's been a better year. And I'm
- 26:02Speaker 1: good with Mike Trout.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I am too. Mike Trout has done nothing but
- 26:07Speaker 2: be an ambassador for the game. Certainly wish he was
- 26:10Speaker 2: healthy more. We all wish that, but Mike Trout is
- 26:12Speaker 2: a good guy. All right, this is from C Carrera 951. Actually,
- 26:16Speaker 2: Armand is amazing. We'll go there. Which rookie met has
- 26:19Speaker 2: a better chance to battle Sal Stewart for rookie of
- 26:21Speaker 2: the year, Nolan McClain or Carson Bench?
- 26:24Speaker 1: I would say whichever one has the better month. And
- 26:27Speaker 1: both these guys have good candidacies. And in maybe another year,
- 26:30Speaker 1: they'd be frontrunners. Carson Bench struggled at the start of
- 26:34Speaker 1: the year, but since May 1st has been really good.
- 26:37Speaker 1: And McLean, kind of the same. Since, I believe, June 1st,
- 26:40Speaker 1: he's been outstanding. He's ranked eighth in the National League
- 26:43Speaker 1: in ERA. And both of these guys, if they have
- 26:46Speaker 1: big finishes, are going to be definitely in the conversation. Maybe, well,
- 26:51Speaker 1: certainly top five. And one of them will be top three.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I expect Weatherholt will be in the top three as well.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But a big finish would help either of their chances.
- 27:00Speaker 2: All right, Ken, always good to be with you on
- 27:02Speaker 2: this Thursday. Thanks for having me. That is it for us.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. We'll be back, of course,
- 27:08Speaker 2: on Sunday night. Yes, that is Sunday, 7 p.m. Eastern.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Next is Foul Territory. Eric Kratz, Todd Frazier, Scott Braun,
- 27:16Speaker 2: guest Phillies play-by-play man Tom McCarthy. Love him. And fish
- 27:19Speaker 2: on first. Isaac's a stout. All right, guys, we'll see
- 27:22Speaker 2: you next time.
