Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Bryce Edwards: Political Commentator on the enquiries on the Mt Maunganui landslide
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the government's launching an inquiry, its own inquiry into
- 0:03Speaker 1: the events leading up to the landslide at the Mound.
- 0:05Speaker 2: There's potentially an inherent conflict between the council and the
- 0:08Speaker 2: Council and campground and importantly the families deserve answers.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mahe Drysdale says the Council is still going to go
- 0:14Speaker 1: ahead with its own.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Won't be looking to have those answers in a maximum
- 0:17Speaker 2: of six months, which I think will be well before
- 0:20Speaker 2: any other investigation or inquiry is concluded.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Joining me now, Bryce Edwards, political commentator Bryce, Good morning,
- 0:27Speaker 1: morning Ryan. Do we need two like when it's not
- 0:30Speaker 1: two for the price of one presumably? Do we need
- 0:32Speaker 1: to or would just the government one suffice?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Oh? Look, I think it's you know, this is such
- 0:38Speaker 2: an important issue that we probably do need different inquiries
- 0:42Speaker 2: coming to different angles. The Council one will probably be
- 0:45Speaker 2: quite limited in a sense it can't look at all
- 0:48Speaker 2: the different issues that a government inquiry could look at,
- 0:51Speaker 2: but it's still given the scale of things, I think
- 0:54Speaker 2: the family, the public do need lots of things answered.
- 0:57Speaker 2: They have to be careful not to duplicate themselves. But no,
- 1:00Speaker 2: I don't think there's any harm in having more than
- 1:02Speaker 2: one inquiry.
- 1:03Speaker 1: What would a government one actually look at that would
- 1:06Speaker 1: be different.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well, of course the government one can look more at
- 1:10Speaker 2: what the police did, what the fire satters did or
- 1:13Speaker 2: didn't do. Issues of council resourcing, it can probably take
- 1:20Speaker 2: a more sort of bird's eye view of everything involved here,
- 1:25Speaker 2: connecting up all the systems failures, whereas the council view
- 1:29Speaker 2: might just look at it from a real council perspective.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Whereas there's things that can be learned here for the
- 1:34Speaker 2: rest of the country, possibly from what his tragedy. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know the way landslips are going to be part
- 1:44Speaker 2: of New Zealand's future. You know, we do have to
- 1:46Speaker 2: make changes throughout the whole country, not just in twa.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Well this is the problem though, isn't it like this?
- 1:54Speaker 1: There was warnings about landslides in this area, slips going
- 1:58Speaker 1: back to the seventies earlier. Even there will be whole
- 2:02Speaker 1: swathes of the country and especially up North Corimandel, that
- 2:06Speaker 1: are at risk of this stuff. And do we just
- 2:08Speaker 1: abandon them? Are people ready for that? You know?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean New Zealand hasn't really taken seriously the
- 2:15Speaker 2: volatility of our soils enough. You know, we're pretty big
- 2:20Speaker 2: on earthquakes. We're becoming more sensitive to the risks of
- 2:24Speaker 2: our tsunamis. But you know, landslades are actually the biggest
- 2:28Speaker 2: killer in New Zealand And because they impact property as well,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you know, and with increasing extreme weather, we need to
- 2:37Speaker 2: know where to build. We then where not to build,
- 2:40Speaker 2: how to have a proper emergency response to when these
- 2:45Speaker 2: situations arise. So yeah, I think it is appropriate that
- 2:50Speaker 2: we look at everything involved here.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But I appreciate your time this morning. Thank you. Nine
- 2:54Speaker 1: Away from six Briceedars, political commentator. For more from Early
