Latest / The M&M Experience / Should the White House Re-Think Its Press Secretary Choice?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The breezes are blowing. The political winds are blowing. It's
- 0:04Speaker 1: what a wild week to bring to a close here
- 0:07Speaker 1: on this Friday. Hey.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I sat down in front of the TV last night.
- 0:11Speaker 2: What do you call it, the TV box? The TV box, yep.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I got on the TV. First of all, I saw
- 0:16Speaker 2: you with Will Kane yesterday. Great job again, Mr. TV star.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's all going to your head. I mean, if anybody
- 0:22Speaker 2: thinks you're humble, if anybody thinks you're nice and modest
- 0:25Speaker 2: and humble. I have a picture of humility. I can't
- 0:26Speaker 2: believe they keep calling me that. I'm going to go
- 0:27Speaker 2: first on M & M Extra. I'm going to go
- 0:29Speaker 2: first on the podcast tomorrow. I'm going to start. I'm
- 0:31Speaker 2: going to start. You always want to start on the podcast.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Notice as you listen, everyone, to the podcast or watch
- 0:38Speaker 2: it on YouTube. How many times he goes first compared
- 0:41Speaker 2: to how many times I go first. It's 50-50. You
- 0:43Speaker 2: know it's 50-50. Shh. Don't tell anybody.
- 0:46Speaker 1: You're messing up my show. Yesterday, I wanted to go
- 0:51Speaker 1: first out of turn so that I could throw you
- 0:53Speaker 1: huge love and Nostradamus recognition for having properly called in
- 0:57Speaker 1: advance the ditching of the Nidal Hasan livestream idea.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yep. The livestream execution. I didn't have on my bingo
- 1:05Speaker 2: card watching Sean Hannity grill the White House press secretary
- 1:08Speaker 2: last night. Man. But here's the thing. I'm so intrigued
- 1:13Speaker 2: with the palace machinations. Let me tell you something. I
- 1:20Speaker 2: guarantee you what happened last night. There's no way that
- 1:22Speaker 2: was organic. I haven't talked to Sean in years. He's
- 1:25Speaker 2: a good friend. He and I started in radio together
- 1:27Speaker 2: in New York at the same time. We've been through
- 1:30Speaker 2: a lot of stuff together. I've known him for a
- 1:32Speaker 2: long time, but I haven't talked to him in a long,
- 1:33Speaker 2: long time. And I love him. I love him and
- 1:35Speaker 2: I respect him. There's no way Sean puts the White
- 1:39Speaker 2: House press secretary on and is miffed with her over
- 1:43Speaker 2: the fact that she didn't pass the bar exam or
- 1:45Speaker 2: that she wasn't adequately prepared, yet he grilled her like
- 1:49Speaker 2: she was a Democrat. There's a back story to that.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Let me tell you what the back story was. Trump
- 1:55Speaker 2: told his friend Sean, and reportedly they talk regularly, okay? Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I don't think there's a closer media figure to Trump
- 2:03Speaker 2: than Sean. I guarantee you Trump told Sean we're going
- 2:09Speaker 2: to take her to the woodshed. Not only did he
- 2:11Speaker 2: tell Sean, I think, how to eviscerate her, and he did.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It was ugly. But then he made her go on
- 2:19Speaker 2: the program. You think she wanted to go on Sean's show?
- 2:23Speaker 2: I mean, she probably expected he would have been friendly
- 2:25Speaker 2: to her.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah, let's rebuild the relationship. Let's give her a little boost.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It did not work out that way at all.
- 2:32Speaker 2: He's grilling her. Did you pass? I mean, my gosh,
- 2:37Speaker 2: in the scheme of things, when we're two half weeks
- 2:40Speaker 2: away from this midterm election, who gives a rat's rear
- 2:44Speaker 2: end if she's got her law degree or not?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Okay, nobody would. If it seemed like she was good
- 2:51Speaker 1: at this, if there was a wrinkle in Caroline Levitt...
- 2:54Speaker 1: She has one time! Mike, Tony Snow, Kaylee McEnany, Caroline
- 2:59Speaker 1: Levitt did not need a week, three weeks, a month.
- 3:02Speaker 1: How much time do we give her to develop skills
- 3:06Speaker 1: that you should pretty well have?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Who cares? Who cares?
- 3:10Speaker 1: I care enormously about the messaging quality of this White House.
- 3:17Speaker 1: How great has it been every day? How many times
- 3:19Speaker 1: have you and I just said, man, did you see
- 3:22Speaker 1: Caroline Leavitt yesterday? Did you see her just eviscerate with
- 3:25Speaker 1: surgical skill these jackal reporters? Do you believe in any
- 3:31Speaker 1: universe that Katie Zachariah is going to be able to
- 3:35Speaker 1: do that?
- 3:36Speaker 2: There was nothing wrong with her messaging. Answer the question.
- 3:42Speaker 2: What you critics are all upset about is that she
- 3:45Speaker 2: acted nervous and scattered and she doesn't have her law degree.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Give her some time. I don't care. Give her some time.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I don't care. I don't care about the law degree.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Number one, I couldn't give two flips. I don't care
- 3:56Speaker 2: about the White House press secretary. I care about winning midterms.
- 3:59Speaker 2: You're not helping.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You haven't enjoyed.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You know, it's not helping hiring somebody who's a deer
- 4:04Speaker 1: in the headlights at the podium.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Why don't you call the president and tell him he
- 4:09Speaker 2: doesn't know how to hire people? Because you know what?
- 4:11Speaker 2: You're reflecting on him. And what you're doing is you're
- 4:14Speaker 2: giving the left all kinds of ammunition because you're caring
- 4:17Speaker 2: about the White House press secretary's credentials. I need Caroline Levin.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I need Kayleigh McEnany. Well, you don't have Caroline Levin.
- 4:24Speaker 2: She left. She quit.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I think the world is full of people who can
- 4:28Speaker 1: do this job. And I don't know that Katie Zachariah
- 4:31Speaker 1: is one of them. I don't think you get better
- 4:34Speaker 1: at this in a heartbeat where she suddenly turns into— And.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I care about Ken Paxton winning the Senate. And I
- 4:40Speaker 2: care about the midterm election. We shouldn't have any unforced errors,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and we shouldn't do any self-inflicted wounds because we're going
- 4:50Speaker 2: to clutch our pearls because we don't like the fact
- 4:52Speaker 2: that the White House press secretary isn't Caroline Leavitt. Come on.
- 4:56Speaker 2: What do you care? What do you even care? How
- 4:58Speaker 2: many times do I have to tell you that it's
- 5:00Speaker 2: important for the message? Why is messaging from the White
- 5:05Speaker 2: House press room important? What did she say on the
- 5:08Speaker 2: message that she blew the other day? No, if you
- 5:10Speaker 2: read it on an index card, the content is lovely.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Did you appreciate Caroline Leavitt? Did you appreciate her? Of
- 5:18Speaker 1: course I did.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Why? Of course I did. So she left. So what
- 5:22Speaker 2: do you want to do, Mark? Find somebody that's 80%
- 5:25Speaker 2: as good. Oh, this is not as nervous. Find somebody
- 5:29Speaker 2: that ain't nervous. There's more than that. nerves going on there.
- 5:33Speaker 2: There's way more than nerves going on there. She's not
- 5:37Speaker 2: good at this. Oh, so what? I know this will
- 5:43Speaker 2: shock you. There are people who think you aren't good
- 5:45Speaker 2: at this and I'm not good at this. So what?
- 5:47Speaker 2: They're mistaken. Everybody's on the sidelines in the Greek chorus
- 5:51Speaker 2: and you're tearing down our own side, Mark. Why are
- 5:54Speaker 2: you doing this? Because I care about the quality of
- 5:59Speaker 2: About the press secretary? But here's the thing.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Using your own scenario, which I think I believe, do
- 6:05Speaker 1: you believe that Trump has perhaps recognized that she's not
- 6:08Speaker 1: up to this and got on the back channel to
- 6:11Speaker 1: Sean and said, Sean, you got a sandbagger. Maybe that's
- 6:16Speaker 1: Trump agreeing with me and recognizing they need an upgrade
- 6:19Speaker 1: at that position.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think he wanted to take her to the woodshed
- 6:22Speaker 2: last night, and they did, and move on. Nobody cares
- 6:26Speaker 2: except talk show hosts who somehow want to hurt our
- 6:30Speaker 2: own side. Why do you want to hurt our side
- 6:33Speaker 2: 17 days before the midterms? First of all, I don't think—
- 6:35Speaker 2: Go read The Daily Beast. You sound like The Daily Beast.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I don't think anybody cares about this except you and me.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I don't think it's fun to argue about. It is fun,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but ultimately it's because I want to do well, not
- 6:47Speaker 1: just in the next 17 days. But for the next
- 6:49Speaker 1: two years, we've got 17 days just to tie a
- 6:51Speaker 1: bow around this. You do believe that Trump called Sean
- 6:55Speaker 1: and kind of sandbagged her, but not to lay the
- 6:58Speaker 1: groundwork for her exit, but to say, hey, we put
- 7:01Speaker 1: it through the meat grinder reset button. Now, let's see
- 7:04Speaker 1: what happens.
- 7:04Speaker 2: You know, if he wants to let her go, he's
- 7:07Speaker 2: already made that decision. She'll be gone. And guess what?
- 7:11Speaker 2: And if she gets a lot better, she ain't going anywhere.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Because you know what? As she pointed out to Sean,
- 7:15Speaker 2: she had about 15 minutes to be ready for that
- 7:18Speaker 2: first press briefing. And look, she clearly wasn't ready. Okay,
- 7:22Speaker 2: give her some time. Give her the next one. You
- 7:23Speaker 2: just admitted to me, and I want to make sure
- 7:25Speaker 2: we get this, on an index card, it's a little
- 7:28Speaker 2: bit like listening to the Kennedy-Nixon debate on radio versus TV.
- 7:32Speaker 2: On an index card, the messaging was just fine. The
- 7:35Speaker 2: words were lovely. Good. That's what matters. If you care
- 7:39Speaker 2: about messaging, then care about consistency, my friend. Be consistent.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You care about the messaging. I can get a ninth
- 7:45Speaker 1: grader to go up there and read the index card.
- 7:47Speaker 1: They need to be delivered with skill, with grace, with power,
- 7:51Speaker 1: with precision, and nine degrees. She's got to have a
- 7:54Speaker 1: master's degree. She's got to have three law degrees. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: don't care if she came out of the vocational wing
- 7:59Speaker 1: of a local high school. She's got to go to
- 8:00Speaker 1: Harvard instead of Pepperdine.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I hope so. She gets better. Don't get distracted. And
- 8:06Speaker 2: can we take a moment, Mark, to go to Bend, Oregon?
- 8:10Speaker 2: There is the most important aspect of this story that
- 8:15Speaker 2: we cannot lose track of. I mean, first of all,
- 8:18Speaker 2: this monster, glad he's rotting in hell, glad a bystander,
- 8:23Speaker 2: a hero bystander stepped up. But you know what that
- 8:26Speaker 2: bystander did? Broke the law. In Bend, Oregon, the Bend
- 8:31Speaker 2: School District, Banned every firearm on its property. It was
- 8:36Speaker 2: a gun-free zone, Mark. Now, this monster would have shot up.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It would have been Sandy Hook, maybe worse. But what
- 8:44Speaker 2: happened was a guy took his gun, his concealed carry gun,
- 8:50Speaker 2: chased this monster down, this fiend, this demon, and sent
- 8:55Speaker 2: him to hell. You know what? State law says a
- 8:58Speaker 2: gun on a school campus... It has to be unloaded
- 9:02Speaker 2: and locked in the car, Mark. How's that work? Now,
- 9:05Speaker 2: are they going to arrest this guy? I know.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The governor, the lib governor of Oregon, had praise for
- 9:10Speaker 1: him and thanked him, so I hope not. But, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: as my buddy Ted Nugent says, guns don't kill people.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Gun-free zones kill people.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Bingo! That's my point. And you know what? Go back
- 9:22Speaker 2: to Wayne LaPierre, my dear friend. The only way to
- 9:25Speaker 2: stop a bad guy with a gun is a good
- 9:27Speaker 2: guy with a gun. And they hate that sentence, but
- 9:29Speaker 2: it's truer, and it happens over. Here we go again.
- 9:33Speaker 2: The thing they say never happens happened yesterday in Bend, Oregon.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And you think about the families of this 5-year-old, this 8-year-old,
- 9:40Speaker 2: this 11-year-old, and their teacher. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old
- 9:45Speaker 2: teacher are right now fighting for their lives as we speak.
- 9:48Speaker 2: We have demons around us. We have evil. It's why
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm grateful for your prayer every day. It's why I'm
- 9:54Speaker 2: now praying every day. We need faith. We need spirituality.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And we need God because this is what we're missing
- 10:02Speaker 2: right now. And by the way, that's why they hated
- 10:04Speaker 2: Charlie so much. Charlie Kirk brought up God and Jesus
- 10:07Speaker 2: Christ every chance he got. And they hated him for it.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Can you imagine how wicked you have to be to
- 10:14Speaker 2: go into a school to kill a five-year-old child? Gosh, Mark.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I mean, that's a level of evil that's so beyond
- 10:25Speaker 2: our understanding. It is.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Does it make it even harder to understand when the
- 10:29Speaker 1: shooter is 16? And by that, I mean, if you've
- 10:31Speaker 1: got a 30-year-old that does this, that's a sour, twisted,
- 10:35Speaker 1: fallen grown-up. When you're 16... And listen, I can't, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: develop a drone and a time machine and follow this
- 10:43Speaker 1: kid around his house and see if he was badly raised.
- 10:46Speaker 1: But this doesn't tend to happen with kids that are
- 10:50Speaker 1: in church every weekend.
- 10:51Speaker 2: That's right.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And who are given a godly rearing at home.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I know. It just confounds and compels. But we do
- 11:01Speaker 2: that at our peril, too, because on the other hand,
- 11:03Speaker 2: you know, there's such loving, great parents whose kids... turn
- 11:07Speaker 2: out to be just rotten to the core. It happens.
- 11:10Speaker 2: They haven't done anything wrong, and they've done their best. Listen,
- 11:14Speaker 2: by the way, Dallas just texted me, and I always
- 11:16Speaker 2: love the instant feedback, just like I love the live
- 11:19Speaker 2: chat room on YouTube when you and I go live
- 11:21Speaker 2: at noon. And today, our holiday tribute for Halloween and Thanksgiving,
- 11:26Speaker 2: which will be a lot of fun, noon Eastern, 11
- 11:28Speaker 2: Central on YouTube. I love the comments. I'm like, I
- 11:31Speaker 2: have ADD on stage. I love watching comments foreign. You
- 11:34Speaker 2: get distracted. I don't. Here's the definitive answer on Katie Zachariah.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Dallas writes, Mark may be right about her lack of preparedness.
- 11:44Speaker 2: She may not have passed the bar test. But she
- 11:47Speaker 2: sure is yummy to look at. So there you have it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Good lord. So there you have it. Well, I'm just
- 11:51Speaker 2: telling you. The people have spoken. Dallas has spoken.
- 11:54Speaker 1: She's yummy to look at.
- 11:56Speaker 2: She's yummy to look at. Well, I mean, she is.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Well, there was the observation that this job seems to
- 12:02Speaker 1: be reserved for really cute blonde women with names starting
- 12:05Speaker 1: with K. Katie McEnany, Caroline Leavitt, Katie Zachariah.
- 12:09Speaker 2: It's Central Carolina. You know, there's a character for that.
- 12:12Speaker 1: If it works out and if you're awesome like Kayleigh
- 12:14Speaker 1: McEnany was and like Caroline Leavitt really was, I'm prepared
- 12:17Speaker 1: not to care.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I get it. Hey, did you see CNN yesterday admitting
- 12:21Speaker 2: that we very well could keep the House and the Senate? Yep. CNN, Harriet,
- 12:24Speaker 2: and we're going to play this all day long. How
- 12:26Speaker 2: does Harriet keep that job? He's in front of that
- 12:27Speaker 2: big map going, the Democrat leads are gone. They've washed
- 12:30Speaker 2: into Lake Erie. They under-poll Republicans. Here's what we need
- 12:35Speaker 2: to know about the polling. He pointed this out. If
- 12:38Speaker 2: the polls underestimate Republicans by only two to four points, which,
- 12:43Speaker 2: by the way, they have been doing that for years. Yep, routinely.
- 12:47Speaker 2: The Senate goes 53-47 red. And the House stays red.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Just two to four points. You know what that means?
- 12:55Speaker 2: Go vote. Go move mountains. Take ten people with you.
- 13:00Speaker 2: If we show up, we win. Don't get distracted by
- 13:04Speaker 2: Mark Davis concerned about Katie Zachariah. Don't do it. Don't
- 13:09Speaker 2: do it. Don't let the rhinos and the establishment Republicans
- 13:12Speaker 2: stop you from voting. No, indeed. I'm pulling your leg. Look, Mr.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Big TV, I'm going to start calling you primetime. When
- 13:20Speaker 2: are you going to do Laura Ingraham again? Come on.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Let's get you back.
- 13:24Speaker 1: You want a behind-the-scenes interesting story?
- 13:26Speaker 2: Are they mad at you over at News Nation? You
- 13:28Speaker 2: know about the inner. No.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You know about the inners of Fox more than I do.
- 13:33Speaker 1: There's apparently a 24-hour rule of separation in appearing on
- 13:36Speaker 1: their shows. And then when I got to Will Kane yesterday,
- 13:40Speaker 1: they said, hey, we saw you on Laura.
- 13:41Speaker 2: That was great.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I said, hey, thank you. They said, if you ever
- 13:44Speaker 1: get competing phone calls, there's a 24-hour rule. Like if
- 13:47Speaker 1: I'm on Laura one night, I can't be on Will
- 13:49Speaker 1: Kane the following day.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Which I'm fine. I'm totally fine. Can I share the
- 13:54Speaker 2: stuff that I know when I was at Fox News
- 13:56Speaker 2: as a contributor? Sure. It's a bloodbath between shows to
- 13:59Speaker 2: compete over who gets who. I sensed there was some– Oh, Mark.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I mean– The battles between Hannity and O'Reilly were legendary.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I was there during that. Oh, yeah. Those are some personalities.
- 14:11Speaker 2: It's fun. I love that stuff. We'll do it live.
- 14:14Speaker 2: We'll do it live. You know he's calling his podcast
- 14:16Speaker 2: We'll Do It Live now? Yes, I asked him about that.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I said, here's this famous video of you at Inside
- 14:21Speaker 2: Edition or whatever melting down and cursing the staff. F it,
- 14:24Speaker 2: we'll do it live.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And then he literally, what could be a really embarrassing
- 14:28Speaker 1: almost Casey Kasem style thing, go Google that as well,
- 14:31Speaker 1: And he said, yeah. He said, look, I got angry.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I made a mistake. What better way to take that
- 14:37Speaker 1: bad moment and turn it into a positive than have
- 14:39Speaker 1: a little fun?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Good for him. His podcast is called We're Doing It Live.
- 14:43Speaker 2: All right.
