- 0:48Speaker 1: Welcome both of you. Thank you so much for coming
- 0:52Speaker 1: to be with us. I'm Born to the Game and
- 0:55Speaker 1: I do a little like toast, I think I do.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Let's start with the toast.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Get right into it. What you got orange juice?
- 1:02Speaker 4: I mean, I just y'all orange juice cheer. All right,
- 1:10Speaker 4: So describe being born to the game and three words,
- 1:14Speaker 4: and then Sydney will start with you.
- 1:17Speaker 5: And I.
- 1:19Speaker 6: Would say it was exciting, probably a little challenging, okay,
- 1:24Speaker 6: and fun for.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Sure and funky. I had some different experience.
- 1:29Speaker 7: So what was.
- 1:30Speaker 4: What was the most fun part?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Probably going to all the games.
- 1:35Speaker 6: I probably said that I've been too, like, I don't
- 1:37Speaker 6: even know how many hundreds.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 1:40Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, there's no way I got to a
- 1:42Speaker 6: thousand games. But the games were fun and traveling was fun.
- 1:46Speaker 6: Always favorite city, Skip school. So that's the line.
- 1:52Speaker 8: That's the best part.
- 1:52Speaker 3: When you can skip school. I'm not here. I'm with
- 1:54Speaker 3: the gag.
- 1:55Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:57Speaker 3: My favorite city probably Miami. I was gonna say miamis
- 2:03Speaker 3: as an adult.
- 2:04Speaker 4: As an adult, you when you hit that twenty one
- 2:07Speaker 4: and you can and you can enjoy Miami.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I mean that's when I went to college. Though. You
- 2:11Speaker 3: went to Miami. So did my husband.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah, and then one of our you know, Maleek, just
- 2:18Speaker 4: committed to Miami. Saw that, Lak renewed shout out, yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, Miami.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Do you see yourself living there right now when I
- 2:30Speaker 4: get older?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah? No, I'm like right now until I'm like okay with.
- 2:35Speaker 8: Miami is like a dream city for me.
- 2:38Speaker 3: She's I'm a beach girl.
- 2:40Speaker 4: I went to I went to Miami every spring break.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Every spring break I was.
- 2:45Speaker 7: College there or not Miami.
- 2:47Speaker 9: No.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I went to Florida my freshman year, and then I
- 2:50Speaker 4: went to Georgia Tech. But I still found my way
- 2:52Speaker 4: in Miami because South Beach. I thought I was cute.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Street beach.
- 3:01Speaker 6: I've never been to a new beach in Miami. I
- 3:02Speaker 6: didn't even know their word. New beach there are that
- 3:06Speaker 6: is great?
- 3:06Speaker 3: And I went to it and.
- 3:07Speaker 7: I was like, I like it. I would go back.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I like it. I like it, I do I like it.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It was it was interesting, it was chill though it
- 3:17Speaker 1: wasn't like a bunch of music. It was just yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and we took the most epic nap anyways, So essin.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Give us three words, how would you describe being born.
- 3:30Speaker 10: To the game.
- 3:32Speaker 9: What comes to mind is a couple, one of a kind.
- 3:36Speaker 9: It's not the words as for but that's two of
- 3:39Speaker 9: them together would be all right. And then a gift
- 3:45Speaker 9: and a curse, so to speak. So you know, you
- 3:49Speaker 9: know what comes with obviously, you know you what comes
- 3:53Speaker 9: with having a father or a parental figure that is
- 3:58Speaker 9: it's famous or everyone knows about. And yeah, it obviously
- 4:02Speaker 9: has an impact on your relationships with other people as well,
- 4:06Speaker 9: and then the perception of others on the outside looking
- 4:09Speaker 9: at you and kind of painting their own picture of
- 4:12Speaker 9: what it is that you do, what you can do,
- 4:15Speaker 9: what your life is like when ye should be like, yep,
- 4:18Speaker 9: it it's you can have an impact on you. But
- 4:21Speaker 9: fortunately for us, I know, say, I was young when
- 4:23Speaker 9: I had to go through it, so I was oblivious
- 4:26Speaker 9: to most of it, but looking back on it, I
- 4:27Speaker 9: could see how some areas uh impacted me and yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 9: changed up some stuff. So that's what I would say.
- 4:35Speaker 7: You know, what was your gifts?
- 4:37Speaker 9: Uh being able to travel, being able to have unique experiences,
- 4:40Speaker 9: being able to pretty much meet going a room and
- 4:43Speaker 9: people would know you by association, being able to meet
- 4:45Speaker 9: new people, that type of deal, but obviously being able
- 4:49Speaker 9: to just you know, like I said, experiences, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 9: it's it's it's nothing normal. Every time you go out,
- 4:56Speaker 9: you're meeting people, knew, you're getting to do something fun.
- 5:00Speaker 9: Like you feel like it's just this is normal. The
- 5:02Speaker 9: purss that you get, So that's definitely the gift and
- 5:06Speaker 9: then the curses. You know, like I said earlier, like
- 5:09Speaker 9: you have no idea the kind of lifestyle that you're
- 5:12Speaker 9: going to be in until you actually live it. People
- 5:18Speaker 9: are looking at you and saying things and coming up
- 5:22Speaker 9: and going up trying to play basketball and that, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 9: trying to follow the steps. So being an athlete, it's
- 5:28Speaker 9: it's it's it's tough because you try to live up
- 5:31Speaker 9: to what you know your father or your parents did
- 5:35Speaker 9: type of deal.
- 5:36Speaker 4: And we're going to get into that because I think
- 5:39Speaker 4: your journey and your story of following your dad's footsteps
- 5:43Speaker 4: is a great story to share with with viewers and
- 5:47Speaker 4: very inspiring.
- 5:48Speaker 3: So we are going to get to that.
- 5:50Speaker 4: But I do know both of you guys traveled and
- 5:54Speaker 4: moved a lot with your dads, right, Can you guys
- 5:57Speaker 4: share with us how that experience was each time you moved.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Was it hard when you had to leave friends that
- 6:05Speaker 4: you established?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Was it fun? Was it exciting?
- 6:08Speaker 4: Like did you adjust well? Like how was that experience
- 6:11Speaker 4: packing up and moving every so often?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Tony? We can start with you.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Yeah, it was not the most fun thing in the world.
- 6:19Speaker 3: It was definitely a little bit difficult. How many times
- 6:22Speaker 3: did you move? Ooh, She's like too many?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Okay, maybe like six or sun.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Yeah, like six or seven Okay.
- 6:34Speaker 4: But it's like, I mean to be honest, One, I
- 6:37Speaker 4: did it once and I was like.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a little different. Like he'd go and play
- 6:42Speaker 6: whatever team he was at, and then it's like we
- 6:45Speaker 6: had our home in Maryland, that's kind of where I
- 6:48Speaker 6: grew up most of the time. And then it's like
- 6:50Speaker 6: he'd go for a season, we'd go with him, and
- 6:52Speaker 6: then we'd come back.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Yep, and I do that and go back.
- 6:56Speaker 6: And then he's like different team when we do that,
- 6:59Speaker 6: and it was it was not great, Like it was
- 7:01Speaker 6: annoying having to leave friends that you made because for me,
- 7:04Speaker 6: it was like you move every two or three yes,
- 7:06Speaker 6: so it's like, oh, I just got here, I just
- 7:09Speaker 6: made friends.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I just got adjusted.
- 7:12Speaker 4: And they're like, Okay, daddy got traded, he got traded,
- 7:15Speaker 4: he's in a new coaching job.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we have to go. We were like great, So where.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Like where do you call home if you move that much?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Like what city do you feel the most at home?
- 7:27Speaker 6: I would just say here because that's where we all
- 7:29Speaker 6: are now. So but usually when people ask me where
- 7:32Speaker 6: I'm from, I pick and I choose.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It depends on who I talk to from Atlanta too.
- 7:42Speaker 6: Yeah, but yeah, but it definitely I would definitely say it.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Like I was able to adapt better.
- 7:51Speaker 6: In like life situations and like any situation period because
- 7:54Speaker 6: like you're moving that often and you're like the new
- 7:56Speaker 6: kid at school.
- 7:57Speaker 3: All the time, like you learn how to us yeah fast. Yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 3: So I'm grateful for that part.
- 8:04Speaker 4: No, I don't have a lot of childhood friends and
- 8:07Speaker 4: that's yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 3: That's a part of that.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Yeah, part of this.
- 8:11Speaker 3: It is what it is. Yeah, there are other good
- 8:13Speaker 3: things that came with it.
- 8:14Speaker 4: You learned how to adapt, you became resilient with change.
- 8:19Speaker 4: So that's something you carry with you for the rest
- 8:23Speaker 4: of your life.
- 8:23Speaker 3: What about you justin.
- 8:28Speaker 9: Like I said, when I was young, it really didn't
- 8:30Speaker 9: have much of an impact. It was like, Okay, Dad's
- 8:33Speaker 9: going to a different city, so it's time to pack
- 8:35Speaker 9: up and go. As far as like, you know, like relationships,
- 8:40Speaker 9: it wasn't that difficult to make friends as far as
- 8:43Speaker 9: you know, you know, you get your new kid coming
- 8:45Speaker 9: in and they know, they find out who your dad
- 8:48Speaker 9: is and it's like, oh, hey, let's be friends with them.
- 8:50Speaker 9: So it's like it's not like it was difficult in
- 8:52Speaker 9: that aspect.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You're the cool kid always on the you know what six.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Noys, Yeah, everybody, So that was cool.
- 9:09Speaker 9: But we made home in Phoenix. Obviously, that's a that's
- 9:12Speaker 9: where we stayed. Let's go figure that's the year that
- 9:16Speaker 9: that's the team that he made is a six man
- 9:18Speaker 9: the year. We always had our house there. When we
- 9:21Speaker 9: left the cities that we were in, we always come
- 9:23Speaker 9: back to Phoenix and I would do my elementary, middle school,
- 9:27Speaker 9: eventually high school and all that there. So Phoenix is home.
- 9:32Speaker 9: We we went all over the place. I think you
- 9:34Speaker 9: said five teams, I was what seven eight? We did
- 9:38Speaker 9: a year in Greece, went oversee which he wishes that
- 9:43Speaker 9: we would have just stayed there for a little bit longer.
- 9:45Speaker 9: What we did Greece has been cool.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Went to Greece.
- 9:51Speaker 9: Oh what were you? I think we were like, uh,
- 9:55Speaker 9: maybe maybe I'm guessing so maybe like eleven twelve too
- 10:01Speaker 9: young to really understand like what was going on because
- 10:04Speaker 9: everyone didn't speak on We couldn't I couldn't communicate with
- 10:07Speaker 9: them like we wanted to. But schools are nice and
- 10:10Speaker 9: places were clean. There was dogs everywhere, cats everywhere, everyone
- 10:16Speaker 9: just running around. That's because the thing was like every
- 10:22Speaker 9: night before we would go to sleep, there would be
- 10:23Speaker 9: like we would put food. Actually had some straight cats
- 10:26Speaker 9: that we had brought in and we would put food out.
- 10:28Speaker 9: And every time we did that, it would be like
- 10:30Speaker 9: thirty somethings hanging out there and we started waiting for
- 10:38Speaker 9: us to come out there. And there was one cat
- 10:40Speaker 9: was a bully would be like bullying and we named
- 10:42Speaker 9: him bullying them picking them feed one of the cast
- 10:45Speaker 9: and they would just be like punking them for the food.
- 10:48Speaker 7: I mean, just have a lot of is that many
- 10:50Speaker 7: casts or just wrong?
- 10:51Speaker 4: I guess that's on my bucket list.
- 10:55Speaker 7: And Greece is beautiful. I mean I think about Greece
- 10:58Speaker 7: and it's.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Just like wow.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:00Speaker 9: People be at restaurants and they would like it would
- 11:03Speaker 9: be so clean, like you would think that I'm telling
- 11:05Speaker 9: all these straight cats or whatever. But it was so clean,
- 11:07Speaker 9: like people have like be feeding them out their plates.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Like look homelessed they like they look they look like
- 11:14Speaker 3: it was.
- 11:14Speaker 9: You know what I'm saying owners, They look good, like
- 11:17Speaker 9: first clean all that like a strange took the car off.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Good.
- 11:27Speaker 1: So the relationships with your dads, what are they like
- 11:34Speaker 1: and how have they influenced your relationships with other people?
- 11:40Speaker 1: However that whatever relationships are, whether it's poltonic.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Or work relationships or romantic, romantic anything.
- 11:46Speaker 6: You love my dad. He's great. We're super close. It's
- 11:53Speaker 6: not to the point where like we talk every day,
- 11:55Speaker 6: but it's like when we do get on the phone chat,
- 12:00Speaker 6: we chat.
- 12:01Speaker 3: And I love when he's home.
- 12:02Speaker 6: It's the best. You know, he doesn't come home too often.
- 12:05Speaker 6: I know he's always working. He's home now may but yeah,
- 12:11Speaker 6: in terms of how it affected my relationships with people.
- 12:15Speaker 6: I wouldn't say he did it directly, but I definitely
- 12:18Speaker 6: have trouble like connecting with people, Like I don't have
- 12:21Speaker 6: too many like super super close friends, okay, because it's
- 12:25Speaker 6: like all the moving. It's like I kind of just
- 12:28Speaker 6: learned how to like disconnect from people.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Do you feel like it's hard to trust people?
- 12:32Speaker 6: Is too hard to Like, I definitely trust people. I'm
- 12:35Speaker 6: the type of person it's like, I'll trust you until
- 12:38Speaker 6: you get so you give.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Me as Yeah, I understand. Yeah, yeah, Okay.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Then he talked to you about relationships and like just
- 12:46Speaker 1: building relationships, and now I'm not talking about with men,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I'm talking.
- 12:49Speaker 7: About with people.
- 12:50Speaker 2: As for the moves and moving around.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I would say my mom does more, okay, like my
- 12:55Speaker 6: dad is more on the business side. Yeah, you have
- 12:58Speaker 6: to you have to connect with people. We have to
- 13:00Speaker 6: make your connections. Yeah, because like that's what that's what
- 13:05Speaker 6: they Yeah mom, and then my mom is more like
- 13:10Speaker 6: the platonic relationship beside and how.
- 13:13Speaker 10: To about it.
- 13:14Speaker 6: I don't talk to figure out my relationships, yeah, I
- 13:16Speaker 6: he liked, Yeah, in his perfect world, you will probably
- 13:21Speaker 6: remain single for the rest of your life.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 6: My mom always tells them She's like, don't ask questions
- 13:25Speaker 6: that are going to hurt your feelings.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Right, My mom would have to say that to my
- 13:29Speaker 3: Do you really want to know? Stop? You get your
- 13:33Speaker 3: feelings hurt?
- 13:35Speaker 4: So you don't want to You don't you don't want to?
- 13:39Speaker 4: You do you want to learn.
- 13:42Speaker 3: How to be closer to people? Or you like?
- 13:44Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I like my lane and it's something I
- 13:47Speaker 6: work on, Like I like my space too, Like I've
- 13:51Speaker 6: also just been like working on how to.
- 13:53Speaker 10: Communicate with people better.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Okay, things like that.
- 13:56Speaker 4: So if someone's looking at this, like I want to
- 13:58Speaker 4: learn how to communicate better, what would you them to do?
- 14:00Speaker 9: It?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Was like the first step to doing it, I would say,
- 14:03Speaker 4: just go just doing it right, Like don't you know?
- 14:07Speaker 6: Yeah? Yeah, Like that's kind of what you have to learn, yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 6: like what you have to get past, like nobody cares
- 14:14Speaker 6: thinking about you, Like nobody's not about you, Like my
- 14:21Speaker 6: boss Nisa, she says this all the time.
- 14:23Speaker 3: She's like, nobody cares.
- 14:25Speaker 4: And sometimes I'm like, oh shoot, maybe I said this weird,
- 14:27Speaker 4: or it's like should nobody nobody cares?
- 14:30Speaker 3: No one, No one is thinking about what you did
- 14:34Speaker 3: two seconds ago.
- 14:34Speaker 4: They're in their own brain thinking about whatever it is
- 14:37Speaker 4: that they got going on.
- 14:38Speaker 3: So no one's that investment.
- 14:41Speaker 8: And you're beautiful and you're kind and you're stunning.
- 14:44Speaker 3: So girl, you got this.
- 14:46Speaker 4: You got well, call us. We'll talk to you always. Always,
- 14:50Speaker 4: you can always call us.
- 14:51Speaker 3: We'll talk to you. Ask Justin. Justin's like police jump.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Like chat shat all right, Justin?
- 15:02Speaker 9: What about you? Our relationship is really good. In the beginning,
- 15:07Speaker 9: as we were growing up, he was trying to, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 9: play both sides of being my dad and also being
- 15:13Speaker 9: my coach. He learned that he couldn't do both. And
- 15:19Speaker 9: the day he decided to stop being my coaches today,
- 15:22Speaker 9: we actually really started to get a lot closer. So,
- 15:26Speaker 9: you know, because it's hard because like you have practice
- 15:28Speaker 9: and you're not doing well and he's fussing at you
- 15:30Speaker 9: and at you, and then you go home and it's
- 15:32Speaker 9: like you still have that on you. Yeah, And once
- 15:34Speaker 9: that went away, like he could just be in the
- 15:37Speaker 9: stands and be like, yo, you're doing well. You do
- 15:39Speaker 9: some stuff you can work on type of deal. But
- 15:42Speaker 9: it wasn't so heavy. And then you know, as we
- 15:46Speaker 9: you know, as I grew up, I started to kind
- 15:48Speaker 9: of see how he operated and what his mindset was
- 15:51Speaker 9: on certain things. He started to learn more about me.
- 15:54Speaker 9: We can get a little bit more open with each
- 15:56Speaker 9: other as well. So yeah, I would say the we're
- 16:00Speaker 9: in a good spot, really good spot.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Yeah, my uncle Eddy.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Youres don't know, but Justin's dad and my dad are
- 16:08Speaker 4: best friends. Yeah, And so Justin and I grew up
- 16:11Speaker 4: with each other. Moms are pregnant at the same time
- 16:14Speaker 4: and their dads together is a sight to see. It's
- 16:17Speaker 4: constant bickering with the two of them. There was one time,
- 16:20Speaker 4: I don't know if your mom told you, your dad
- 16:21Speaker 4: came to La to see dad. They were playing talk
- 16:25Speaker 4: or something for literally almost twenty four hours. They stayed
- 16:29Speaker 4: up and they were bickering, yelling, cussing each other out,
- 16:33Speaker 4: and Mom's like, how much are y'all winning?
- 16:35Speaker 7: Like who's losing?
- 16:36Speaker 3: They were arguing.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Over five dollars, five dollars whatever it was.
- 16:42Speaker 3: It wasn't any more than thirty bucks.
- 16:44Speaker 9: They don't start bickering with one of them and they're
- 16:46Speaker 9: not going forward.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely not.
- 16:48Speaker 4: When your dad sees people come after my dad, I
- 16:50Speaker 4: see him on Twitter, just.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Oh, immediately going and.
- 16:56Speaker 4: You talk about your dad being your coach what age
- 16:59Speaker 4: did he kind of pulled back?
- 17:02Speaker 9: It was high school.
- 17:03Speaker 3: It was high school, okay.
- 17:04Speaker 9: So that's when he realized that because that was that
- 17:10Speaker 9: was the time where like, you know, it was a
- 17:11Speaker 9: young adolescent, like I was moody too, Like okay, so yeah,
- 17:16Speaker 9: I wasn't fun to be around. I was fun to
- 17:18Speaker 9: be around.
- 17:18Speaker 3: It was fun to be around. To grow out of that, yeah,
- 17:21Speaker 3: and we'll talk about that later.
- 17:22Speaker 4: But okay, but now that you're older and you're looking
- 17:25Speaker 4: back on what your dad was trying to do, do
- 17:27Speaker 4: you feel like you can appreciate what he was trying
- 17:31Speaker 4: to do being your coach, are you still like? No,
- 17:33Speaker 4: I would I prefer the more personal relationship I had
- 17:36Speaker 4: with him then the coach.
- 17:38Speaker 9: I mean, he was doing you know, it's it's at
- 17:40Speaker 9: the end of the day. This is his first time
- 17:42Speaker 9: in life too, so like it's his first time having
- 17:44Speaker 9: a son, so like trying to navigate and figure out
- 17:47Speaker 9: what's best for him and me. It was was an experiment.
- 17:51Speaker 9: So I mean, I think what we went through is good.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I love uncle Uncle Letty was so let's do it.
- 18:03Speaker 7: So we want to know are you look?
- 18:05Speaker 4: I was like, I'm like, should I I'm looking like,
- 18:09Speaker 4: should we go there?
- 18:11Speaker 3: Let's go there? Sindny, So, yeah, you don't do you
- 18:15Speaker 3: want to shoot your shot at anybody today? We like,
- 18:18Speaker 3: you know we I mean we our live episode. We
- 18:21Speaker 3: went there, so if you want to, we can.
- 18:25Speaker 9: Look.
- 18:25Speaker 7: You don't have to, but just now I don't want
- 18:28Speaker 7: to talk.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Look, he's like, didn't I just tell you I'm.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Working on communicating and connecting. You want me to and
- 18:35Speaker 4: now you want me to shoot my shot?
- 18:37Speaker 3: Were playing?
- 18:38Speaker 4: But if you want to go a couple we got
- 18:41Speaker 4: Look which camera should she look at?
- 18:42Speaker 7: She said?
- 18:45Speaker 4: Everybody's going like, hello, hello, hello, we.
- 18:49Speaker 7: Have this beautiful yeah, beautiful right here?
- 18:53Speaker 3: I know he's a girlfriend or not? Who is? Like?
- 18:55Speaker 7: Google before you right?
- 18:56Speaker 3: Cut the camp? Who is he? Okay? Ahead, this is
- 19:02Speaker 3: Do you want to write it on the whiteboard and
- 19:03Speaker 3: we google it?
- 19:04Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 19:04Speaker 5: Yeah's your white board real quick.
- 19:08Speaker 4: If anybody knows me, I am the investigator.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I will find her out.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Don't play.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I'll find out your investigator and I should have you
- 19:18Speaker 1: should I really will find it.
- 19:19Speaker 7: You can literally you can find.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Out who you're calling, who you're texting, you know him?
- 19:25Speaker 3: See I don't really know what what see I don't
- 19:30Speaker 3: really know the new guys. All right, let's see.
- 19:36Speaker 7: While we're doing that. Why why we're while we're investigating justin,
- 19:39Speaker 7: would you.
- 19:39Speaker 9: Like to Yeah, I'm not single.
- 19:44Speaker 3: That was awesome. That is really awesome, Justine.
- 19:46Speaker 7: I'm so happy for you.
- 19:47Speaker 2: So how did you guys meet?
- 19:50Speaker 1: Nice good cell girls? So are you are you? Are
- 19:54Speaker 1: you dating for marriage? Are you dating just to feel
- 19:57Speaker 1: things out?
- 19:57Speaker 7: Like what you.
- 19:59Speaker 9: I mean at this point in time, if you're not
- 20:01Speaker 9: dating for marriage, what you're really doing?
- 20:03Speaker 3: Okay?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Is that what you're really doing? What are you really doing?
- 20:07Speaker 1: That's the question.
- 20:08Speaker 9: So yeah, I'm considering that for sure.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Very good.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So what were you looking for in a partner seeking learnership?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Did you?
- 20:21Speaker 7: Okay?
- 20:21Speaker 11: Just give us okay, they had to be in the
- 20:24Speaker 11: same faith obviously, because you can't be in the same
- 20:27Speaker 11: household or someone who obviously is going to be raising
- 20:30Speaker 11: a child and going against you know as me as
- 20:34Speaker 11: a man, I.
- 20:34Speaker 9: Had to be the leader and we're two separate agendas.
- 20:38Speaker 9: Then it's not going to work out difficult. It just
- 20:40Speaker 9: makes it justically, it doesn't make any sense. Uh, you're
- 20:46Speaker 9: telling you can't do this.
- 20:48Speaker 7: That's why you don't make sense. That's hilarious.
- 20:51Speaker 9: So that was one of the main things. Aside from that,
- 20:57Speaker 9: everything else is you know, it's pretty much my preference
- 21:02Speaker 9: in a sense, like she knocked off pretty much majority
- 21:06Speaker 9: of the boxers.
- 21:07Speaker 7: For you, she's beautifuthority of the boxes. How many boxes
- 21:10Speaker 7: were there? Really just.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Check them all out.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Yeah, if you were to give advice to single men, what.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Would you say?
- 21:24Speaker 9: I said, the main thing is find someone that believes
- 21:27Speaker 9: in the same thing that you believe in.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you can.
- 21:30Speaker 9: I mean from that point, like you can pretty much
- 21:32Speaker 9: build off that you got the foundations set. They don't
- 21:36Speaker 9: like certain things at that time, it doesn't mean that
- 21:38Speaker 9: they won't like them forever, like they can always grow
- 21:41Speaker 9: into it. So if you have that, then you notice
- 21:44Speaker 9: you as someone that's going to have your back when
- 21:46Speaker 9: it really matters and when it really counts. And I
- 21:49Speaker 9: think that's probably the most important factor.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I love that.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I love that you found someone I love because I mean,
- 21:54Speaker 1: I don't think we're meant to be here alone.
- 21:57Speaker 3: We are meant to have that just a connection.
- 22:00Speaker 9: Be fruitful and multiply.
- 22:01Speaker 3: And you can't do that and do that by yourself.
- 22:05Speaker 3: You can't.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Okay, So what's the update on I say, shoot a girl, okay.
- 22:09Speaker 6: Go ahead, we're ready okay, or or if you don't
- 22:14Speaker 6: want to say it, just put on the white board
- 22:16Speaker 6: and show the camera.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Oh that we can make it work over here.
- 22:24Speaker 7: Thank you for helping me out halfway.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I don't even know if that's how you got loo
- 22:29Speaker 3: hell knows.
- 22:30Speaker 1: We know his his his his instagram, so we can
- 22:34Speaker 1: tackt this.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Don't worry.
- 22:37Speaker 3: He said, wait a minute, yesterday, you have to say
- 22:40Speaker 3: what you want.
- 22:41Speaker 1: If you can't verbalize what you want, you're putting in
- 22:44Speaker 1: our game. You have to say and be bolts right.
- 22:47Speaker 1: So let's we're doing.
- 22:49Speaker 3: It, Mara, We're doing girl. You are. This is so
- 22:56Speaker 3: mister mister, let's.
- 23:00Speaker 7: We have we have smarts.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Study comes from a great family.
- 23:05Speaker 7: Yes, she understands the business. Yep, and you would be lucky.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Come holler at our girl.
- 23:13Speaker 7: That's it.
- 23:15Speaker 8: We're like, what's our instagram handle?
- 23:17Speaker 7: What do you want to Sendley?
- 23:20Speaker 3: Okay, there you go, there you go.
- 23:23Speaker 7: Let me find out. We have a love connection.
- 23:25Speaker 3: And this is about to turn into a dating show.
- 23:27Speaker 7: Let this become that.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it might be.
- 23:32Speaker 9: To the game.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Franchise, Yes, another franchise.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I love it.
- 23:39Speaker 7: You guys like you guys.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Like that, because yeah, yeah, we could do it.
- 23:45Speaker 7: The children.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Yes, good shot Tamara high five girls.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Actually, yeah, yeah, we're good because she's gonna do the
- 23:54Speaker 1: you know, the I'll do.
- 23:56Speaker 3: The background chat to make sure that everything is good.
- 23:59Speaker 3: It makes you, you know, we have boy friends, we check,
- 24:02Speaker 3: we'll make sure well.
- 24:04Speaker 4: So, since we're on the topic of dating with you,
- 24:06Speaker 4: what are some green flags and red flags that you're
- 24:10Speaker 4: looking for.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Look, okay, let's get our flags.
- 24:14Speaker 4: We got paink we got pink, so you don't get
- 24:22Speaker 4: a flag.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Sorry, green flags.
- 24:25Speaker 3: You have to be a gentleman. I have literally stopped
- 24:28Speaker 3: talking to people because, like, we went on a date
- 24:30Speaker 3: and he didn't open the door. Period. You're like, no,
- 24:33Speaker 3: you gotta be. You got to be really strict, standard time.
- 24:38Speaker 3: What else? Green flag? Have some goals?
- 24:40Speaker 6: Okay, okay, we love the red flags.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I don't know men have. She's like, where do I f.
- 25:00Speaker 6: Oh, if you don't have a good relationship with your parents, that.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Can be tough.
- 25:08Speaker 7: That's a tough, especially with your family.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it can be really tough, especially and
- 25:14Speaker 1: also if you don't if you don't get along with
- 25:16Speaker 1: their parents, that can be right.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I always say, I don't know what that's like. I
- 25:21Speaker 4: love my in law and I hear so many people
- 25:24Speaker 4: talk about horror stories that they have with their in laws,
- 25:27Speaker 4: and I'm like, either, and it's so easy. Yeah, it
- 25:32Speaker 4: really is easier when both families can get along.
- 25:34Speaker 10: Really.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'm so grateful.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Okay, So those are your red and your green flags.
- 25:40Speaker 4: So everyone knows the viewers who better come correct, come
- 25:44Speaker 4: correctly with our girls sending we don't want to have
- 25:47Speaker 4: to fight nobody.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And especially with daddy's girls. Bless these men's poor hearts
- 25:51Speaker 1: and blessed, bless these man's poor hearts. Because when you
- 25:54Speaker 1: have dad in your life and he's they just they
- 25:57Speaker 1: do everything.
- 25:58Speaker 3: It can be it can a little intimidating. Give me
- 26:02Speaker 3: a little.
- 26:02Speaker 4: And do you feel like you guys are intimidated to
- 26:04Speaker 4: talk to you because of your dad.
- 26:06Speaker 7: And your relationship? Yeah?
- 26:08Speaker 3: Yeah, because our thing is well, my daddy, my daddy,
- 26:12Speaker 3: my daddy. I am too, and I'm thirty three and
- 26:14Speaker 3: married Dan.
- 26:16Speaker 7: That's the thing.
- 26:17Speaker 1: So she's a dad girl, and I mean we love that.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You know, she's been well taken care of and so
- 26:22Speaker 1: she knows what to do.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Okay, So justin.
- 26:26Speaker 7: You're back in the hot seat. You're ready.
- 26:28Speaker 9: What's what you got?
- 26:30Speaker 7: We've already talked about it. So you're you're You're fine, okay.
- 26:33Speaker 4: So he's like, okay.
- 26:35Speaker 9: So.
- 26:37Speaker 7: You were.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You didn't tell the people that you were really good.
- 26:41Speaker 1: You were you are really good at basketball. You got
- 26:44Speaker 1: a scholarship to play it at Fresno State.
- 26:47Speaker 3: M hm.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And so you're on this journey to follow your dad's footsteps.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So they don't give scholarships to say anybody.
- 26:55Speaker 1: So you you were on this journey. And then you
- 27:00Speaker 1: talked about your journey at Fresno State and the correlation
- 27:05Speaker 1: between that and mental health. So we want you to
- 27:08Speaker 1: take us through that journey as much as you would like,
- 27:11Speaker 1: just to kind of tell people how you were able
- 27:13Speaker 1: to move through something like getting a scholarship for your
- 27:17Speaker 1: education to play ball, and then the journey through and who.
- 27:21Speaker 7: You are today.
- 27:24Speaker 9: I guess I'll start with how I ended up at
- 27:26Speaker 9: Fresno State the first place. Yeah, So I went to
- 27:31Speaker 9: Brewster for a prep here after I graduated high school
- 27:36Speaker 9: because I was already I graduated early. I was younger
- 27:39Speaker 9: than I was supposed to be, so I was like,
- 27:42Speaker 9: let me go take another year and play some bolved
- 27:44Speaker 9: good idea at the same time. That's where I also
- 27:47Speaker 9: injured my knee. So my senior year at high school,
- 27:51Speaker 9: I was pretty much playing on one leg. At that point,
- 27:55Speaker 9: I had injured my knee going up and doing some
- 27:59Speaker 9: dunking in the murals and it just kind of stayed
- 28:02Speaker 9: with me. So fast forward went to Brewster. Wasn't able
- 28:06Speaker 9: to really play because I was playing on one leg
- 28:09Speaker 9: the entire time. Still gave out work, but you know,
- 28:12Speaker 9: I was hurt every time I made a move. It
- 28:14Speaker 9: was pain, pain, pain. That's all I really knew how
- 28:17Speaker 9: to deal with when I was playing. So I had
- 28:19Speaker 9: an opportunity. They called me up. One of the coaches
- 28:21Speaker 9: who was at Frezen Stair at the time, he knew
- 28:24Speaker 9: of me because he saw me play on the A
- 28:26Speaker 9: U circle, so he called me down. He asked me
- 28:28Speaker 9: to come out there and play with the guys and
- 28:30Speaker 9: kind of shore the other coaches with what I could do. Essentially,
- 28:32Speaker 9: I was the one out there to try out. Got there,
- 28:36Speaker 9: they had me play with the guys that they had
- 28:38Speaker 9: me there, and long story short, gave him work. I
- 28:41Speaker 9: think at one point I was like when the first
- 28:43Speaker 9: game we played I was. I was working them out
- 28:46Speaker 9: like work. I probably scored like ten buckets in a
- 28:50Speaker 9: row on them. And this is like their dude that
- 28:52Speaker 9: they like really was trying to like put up. So
- 28:55Speaker 9: that was all I really need to do. They was like, Okay,
- 28:57Speaker 9: we want you here, We'll bring you on this ghost
- 28:59Speaker 9: gull got to the school first year though, wasn't able
- 29:04Speaker 9: to play because I had to GIK knee surgery and
- 29:06Speaker 9: that's when it kind of all started to happen.
- 29:09Speaker 4: So freshman year, you get to Fresno State and you
- 29:11Speaker 4: have to have.
- 29:12Speaker 9: A cl no it was it was my patil attendant,
- 29:16Speaker 9: so it was the tender is right here on the knee.
- 29:19Speaker 9: So basically every time I do something jump, it was
- 29:23Speaker 9: pain every single time. So did that for the first year,
- 29:28Speaker 9: and then sophomore year comes around and I'm like, let's go,
- 29:31Speaker 9: let's let's get into it. Unfortunately I was still in pain.
- 29:35Speaker 9: The pain did not go away no matter what I
- 29:37Speaker 9: seemed to do, and I didn't get to play that
- 29:40Speaker 9: year either. Junior year rolls around and I had to
- 29:43Speaker 9: get another surgery.
- 29:45Speaker 3: So what did they say happened?
- 29:47Speaker 9: Why? They said that. See the first the first time
- 29:51Speaker 9: I got surgery. I was, I'm kind of I don't know,
- 29:53Speaker 9: I'm not a doctor, but they have me walking out
- 29:56Speaker 9: of there on my own two feet.
- 29:58Speaker 7: The day of the day surgery.
- 30:01Speaker 9: Yeah, it was like looking back on it now, it's
- 30:04Speaker 9: real goofy, Like I I got the surgery, I've laid
- 30:07Speaker 9: in the bed, I had the ENDCG and me and
- 30:09Speaker 9: it was like all right, let's go. Let's know what
- 30:11Speaker 9: you mean, like with my wheelchair. Now you good. So
- 30:14Speaker 9: I'm literally walking down like a crutch, like with my
- 30:16Speaker 9: knees still freshly open and wow, going to do that,
- 30:20Speaker 9: And they like it was fun to just stake some
- 30:21Speaker 9: pay medics and you'll be all right.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 30:24Speaker 9: I'm not sure if they had anything to do with
- 30:26Speaker 9: a long term who knows doctor, Like I said, it's
- 30:30Speaker 9: it was his decision. He thought I didn't really need it,
- 30:33Speaker 9: so like I said, junior year, get another surgery. And
- 30:37Speaker 9: from that point, like I'm already like in the Kosso College,
- 30:40Speaker 9: like I'm not playing. People are like asking me, am
- 30:44Speaker 9: I gonna play? I can get on the court. They're thinking,
- 30:46Speaker 9: I'm like, you know, you know the stuff the kids
- 30:48Speaker 9: be talking about. All he's scared. You don't want to play.
- 30:50Speaker 9: You know, he's not heard, he's just faking it. At
- 30:52Speaker 9: this point. He just doesn't want to do anything, and
- 30:55Speaker 9: all that kind of like builds up on you. So
- 30:57Speaker 9: I started looking for outlets, you know, trying to figure
- 30:59Speaker 9: out how I can cope with this whole thing, trying
- 31:02Speaker 9: to figure out, Okay, you know, I'm not on the court,
- 31:05Speaker 9: So where can I find my happiness. It's not in school.
- 31:08Speaker 9: It's not in you know, it's not trying to get
- 31:11Speaker 9: back on the court. Just once. I've been trying everything,
- 31:13Speaker 9: it's not working, and dealt with that. That's that's why
- 31:19Speaker 9: I actually got a lot of my great hairs of college.
- 31:21Speaker 9: I start growing gray hairs my junior year. Like people
- 31:24Speaker 9: start looking at like we get great hairs for it,
- 31:25Speaker 9: bro Like, yes, yeah, really, I don't.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 31:30Speaker 9: So I get in my eyesight, like two or three
- 31:32Speaker 9: great airs going in my college.
- 31:33Speaker 7: He said, two or.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Three nineteen twenty years old.
- 31:37Speaker 7: What you mean.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I had? That's funny, Okay, so serious.
- 31:47Speaker 4: So by the time you're a junior, you're in a
- 31:50Speaker 4: dark place.
- 31:51Speaker 9: Yeah, real dark place, not happy, if anything, not enjoying
- 31:58Speaker 9: you know, life. So nothing really excited me no matter
- 32:04Speaker 9: what I really tried to do. I couldn't stay on
- 32:06Speaker 9: the court like I would play for like maybe two
- 32:08Speaker 9: three practices and it would be just back to square one.
- 32:14Speaker 9: I would have to be sitting up just watching iceing
- 32:16Speaker 9: all the time. It wasn't fun.
- 32:19Speaker 4: And so after your second surgery, was the nie feeling
- 32:22Speaker 4: better by that time and these.
- 32:24Speaker 9: Great now, like I could do everything now. But during
- 32:27Speaker 9: that time, like it didn't matter what I did, Like
- 32:30Speaker 9: it was always it was always pain. It was always pain.
- 32:34Speaker 9: I could not play the game of basketball, and that
- 32:40Speaker 9: was just tough. Like, you know, I felt like it
- 32:42Speaker 9: was being taken away from me from like stuff that
- 32:44Speaker 9: I did. And looking back on it, I probably could
- 32:47Speaker 9: have done some things better as far as like my choices. Well,
- 32:51Speaker 9: you know, in college, you you know, you get to
- 32:53Speaker 9: the point where you start, you know, you're drinking a
- 32:55Speaker 9: little bit. Yeah, and alcohol was one of my ways
- 32:59Speaker 9: of escaping back then. Okay, And if I could go
- 33:02Speaker 9: back and tell myself, now, don't touch it, yeah, leave
- 33:05Speaker 9: it alone, don't don't don't mess with it, because I
- 33:09Speaker 9: thought that was a way for me to feel better,
- 33:11Speaker 9: and that could have been, you know, one of the
- 33:12Speaker 9: reasons why my need didn't get right because you felt
- 33:15Speaker 9: like but there, yeah, I thought I was coping, but
- 33:18Speaker 9: no one could really like come to me and tell me, like,
- 33:20Speaker 9: yesin this is the reason you need to stop doing
- 33:22Speaker 9: this like I was. I was. I was kind of
- 33:24Speaker 9: on my loan, not to say I didn't have a
- 33:25Speaker 9: support system, but I'm in college. Like, no one's really Like.
- 33:29Speaker 4: I was trying to ask you, So, when you're going
- 33:30Speaker 4: through this and you have a dad who is the
- 33:34Speaker 4: Eddie Johnson, he's gone through this, did you look to
- 33:37Speaker 4: him for any advice? Did you tell him that you
- 33:40Speaker 4: were in this space? And or did you because you know,
- 33:43Speaker 4: at that age, we really do feel like we can
- 33:45Speaker 4: handle everything ourselves and try to hide we've grown like
- 33:48Speaker 4: we don't need the parental advice.
- 33:51Speaker 7: But did you hide that from.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Them or did you really allow them in to know
- 33:56Speaker 4: that you were in this start to a.
- 33:58Speaker 9: Certain point, Okay, I'm not I wouldn't call myself someone
- 34:02Speaker 9: who's very able to open express my emotions and the
- 34:06Speaker 9: way I felt, especially that that age, I kind of
- 34:09Speaker 9: kept a lot of my stuff myself. But I mean
- 34:12Speaker 9: it wasn't like they knew what was going on. They
- 34:15Speaker 9: understood like the situation and maybe now to the full extent,
- 34:22Speaker 9: but yeah, maybe if I would have been a little
- 34:24Speaker 9: bit more open, maybe they could have gotten me a
- 34:25Speaker 9: little bit more help during that time. Who knows.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Yeah, do you feel like part of your struggle was
- 34:34Speaker 4: the expectation to fill your father's shoes that you couldn't meet.
- 34:38Speaker 9: At that point, it didn't really matter. I just need
- 34:40Speaker 9: to get people knew I was there because I could
- 34:45Speaker 9: play basketball, like I would be on the team if
- 34:47Speaker 9: I did, you know what I mean. So at this point,
- 34:50Speaker 9: like it's now time to get on the court and
- 34:51Speaker 9: show them. But like, yeah, like four years there and
- 34:56Speaker 9: not one minute logged. That's why I tell people when
- 34:58Speaker 9: they asked me, like you like yes or no? Because
- 35:02Speaker 9: I was on the team and I did all the practices,
- 35:03Speaker 9: but I never was able to get on the court.
- 35:06Speaker 3: That's hard.
- 35:06Speaker 1: But when you're that young, Yeah, I don't even know
- 35:09Speaker 1: if that sinks in that you're you're here to do
- 35:11Speaker 1: a job and you can't even do it.
- 35:13Speaker 7: That has to be so fair and.
- 35:14Speaker 4: You're not able to do it because you feel like
- 35:16Speaker 4: your body let you do it. Just it just you
- 35:18Speaker 4: can't control exactly, Like that was.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Knowing that you're good and that you can do something
- 35:23Speaker 1: really really well and can't do.
- 35:24Speaker 4: It because your body just won't allow you to do it.
- 35:29Speaker 9: It was tough. Yeah, like what I'm saying, like it was.
- 35:31Speaker 9: It was tough. So that's when, like, you know, a
- 35:35Speaker 9: lot of that's why a lot of my depression kicked in.
- 35:38Speaker 4: So being depressed because I've I don't know if if
- 35:43Speaker 4: Sidney to Merrick, you guys have been diagnosedally depressed.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Not diagnosed, I don't know.
- 35:48Speaker 4: It's a lot of the times you don't know that
- 35:50Speaker 4: you are depressed, and it takes outside people looking in
- 35:54Speaker 4: to say, hey, Justin or hey Sidney to Mary and Maria,
- 35:57Speaker 4: are you okay?
- 35:57Speaker 3: I think you know, we see the abuse.
- 35:59Speaker 4: With the alcohol or drugs or pay the change of behavior.
- 36:03Speaker 4: I think you need help. Did that happen for you
- 36:06Speaker 4: or did you just come to that moment yourself to say, hey,
- 36:09Speaker 4: I don't like the way that I've been feeling.
- 36:12Speaker 3: I need to get some help.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Like what sparked that change or that transition out of
- 36:16Speaker 4: the state of depression.
- 36:16Speaker 9: It took a while. It took even after I got
- 36:19Speaker 9: out of Collars to be able to finally realize what
- 36:22Speaker 9: was actually like harming me. Okay, that sense like because
- 36:26Speaker 9: that's that's what I knew. That's that's what worked for me,
- 36:30Speaker 9: you know what I'm saying. That was my comfort.
- 36:32Speaker 1: So do you remember a time when you said to yourself,
- 36:36Speaker 1: justin we're making a change, Like you talk had that
- 36:39Speaker 1: internal moment.
- 36:40Speaker 9: All the time, like you would tell yourself like, Okay,
- 36:43Speaker 9: we're not doing this anymore. But like, okay, a couple
- 36:45Speaker 9: of days later, here we are right back where we
- 36:48Speaker 9: said we weren't going to be. And you know, you
- 36:51Speaker 9: can tell yourself, oh, this is my last time doing
- 36:53Speaker 9: this as many times as you want, but that's just
- 36:56Speaker 9: at that point if you don't actually put the effort
- 36:57Speaker 9: in just doing it, it's all talk at that point.
- 37:00Speaker 9: And it's like I said, it took some time for me,
- 37:04Speaker 9: even after college, to finally be able to realize that.
- 37:08Speaker 9: Now now obviously you know, ten fifteen years moved from that,
- 37:14Speaker 9: I feel a little much better, feel you know a
- 37:16Speaker 9: lot or whatever.
- 37:19Speaker 3: I do.
- 37:21Speaker 9: I mean, I can I'm always so growing. I feel
- 37:23Speaker 9: like everyone's down. There's no there's no time to stop
- 37:26Speaker 9: like getting to where you need to be at the
- 37:28Speaker 9: end of the day.
- 37:31Speaker 3: But did you go into therapy.
- 37:33Speaker 9: Oh I did. I did therapy. I did that and
- 37:37Speaker 9: helpful a little bit. It was just hard to open
- 37:39Speaker 9: up the.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Buddy, but he was like asking helping up the buddy.
- 37:44Speaker 9: I didn't like. I thought I was opening up, Like, No,
- 37:47Speaker 9: I don't want to tell you that you didn't trust him.
- 37:51Speaker 7: I mean, and that's that's real.
- 37:52Speaker 4: But that is a huge step that a lot of
- 37:54Speaker 4: people don't know, particularly men and then men of color.
- 37:58Speaker 4: You guys are not comfort getting to the chair. So
- 38:01Speaker 4: that's first and foremost. You got to the chair. So
- 38:04Speaker 4: that's a huge win.
- 38:05Speaker 9: Right, someone that you never met no more. Yeah, what
- 38:08Speaker 9: he does you're supposed to tell you the things that're
- 38:10Speaker 9: supposed to just make everything everything, yeah away.
- 38:14Speaker 4: So therapy wasn't something that helped you personally.
- 38:17Speaker 9: I did it for call it a month, and I
- 38:22Speaker 9: was like, I don't want.
- 38:23Speaker 10: To go no more.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Okay, but we're looking at a different version of you today. Yeah,
- 38:29Speaker 4: absolutely So, So what helped create this version of Justin Johnson?
- 38:35Speaker 3: It wasn't therapy.
- 38:36Speaker 9: So a lot of my issues stemmed for me not
- 38:40Speaker 9: having a relationship with the most high So when I
- 38:44Speaker 9: was in college, I had pretty much forsake him because
- 38:47Speaker 9: I wasn't getting what I believed that I deserved at
- 38:50Speaker 9: the time. I wasn't able to play, so why are
- 38:53Speaker 9: you taking this from me? So I was like, if
- 38:55Speaker 9: you're not going to help me, then I'm not going
- 38:57Speaker 9: to do what I need to do to praise you
- 38:59Speaker 9: worked with get out of my face. And that's when
- 39:01Speaker 9: a lot of the chaos started to happen in my life.
- 39:04Speaker 9: I was dealing with a lot, like I said, depression.
- 39:07Speaker 9: It was suffering from a I don't know if you
- 39:09Speaker 9: guys ever heard of this sleep paralysis familiar with it.
- 39:13Speaker 9: I've had bouts with sleep paralysis where I would go
- 39:16Speaker 9: like I couldn't sleep without actually having it happen to me.
- 39:20Speaker 9: And the stuff I was seeing, hearing and dealing with
- 39:22Speaker 9: at the time I wouldn't wish on anybody. Yeah, So
- 39:32Speaker 9: dealing with all that and getting to where I am
- 39:34Speaker 9: now where I don't have those bouts, it does feel
- 39:38Speaker 9: good because now I know that the support system in
- 39:40Speaker 9: the world is not going to solve anything. It's it's
- 39:44Speaker 9: it's having that. It might seem cliche and point of
- 39:47Speaker 9: people that may be hearing this, but at the end
- 39:48Speaker 9: of the day, like you're a creative being. You're here
- 39:52Speaker 9: not by your own choice or free will. So something
- 39:54Speaker 9: made you and put you here in the first place.
- 39:57Speaker 9: So what is that. Well, I choose to believe that
- 39:59Speaker 9: it is the entity that is spoken of in the Bible,
- 40:04Speaker 9: and doing that is essentially, you know, allow me to
- 40:09Speaker 9: transform myself.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Wow, that's incredible, incredible because we're looking at the transformation.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Yeah, still going every day is a work in progress exactly, but.
- 40:22Speaker 4: You seem more at peace and happy and lights and
- 40:28Speaker 4: I'm happy for you.
- 40:29Speaker 2: We're so happy for you.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Let's talk about your evolution, even if it's even if
- 40:39Speaker 1: it's a small one. So I feel like I go
- 40:41Speaker 1: through small revel like evolutions like every few months, you
- 40:44Speaker 1: know what I'm saying.
- 40:44Speaker 2: How we just keep evolving, evolving, So.
- 40:46Speaker 1: If you had any evolution moments over the years.
- 40:53Speaker 7: That you can recall that.
- 40:55Speaker 3: I can recall.
- 40:57Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 40:57Speaker 3: I feel like I'm still evolving absolutely three.
- 41:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm really still trying to figure out like what
- 41:03Speaker 6: I'm doing that.
- 41:06Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a part of that.
- 41:08Speaker 10: Yeah, because right now I have no idea.
- 41:10Speaker 4: And the end that twenty three, you're not.
- 41:15Speaker 6: But that's why I feel like, that's what a lot
- 41:17Speaker 6: of people might like, why don't I have just figured
- 41:19Speaker 6: out yet twenty three?
- 41:21Speaker 3: You're not, Yeah, because I was always that.
- 41:24Speaker 6: I've always been that person like I don't know what
- 41:28Speaker 6: it's okay. Yeah, Like I went to college.
- 41:30Speaker 3: I didn't know what I wanted. But if you study
- 41:32Speaker 3: at college, picked the major like you're like and pick.
- 41:39Speaker 6: When I went to college, I went because I want
- 41:42Speaker 6: to do broadcast journalism.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Okay. I did it for like a semester or two
- 41:49Speaker 3: changed mind.
- 41:50Speaker 9: You know.
- 41:51Speaker 7: I talked about I was like, I don't really like
- 41:53Speaker 7: being in front of She's like I have to talk
- 41:56Speaker 7: to people saying it.
- 41:59Speaker 3: I don't really like being the camera.
- 42:01Speaker 6: And I was kind of just like general communication okay.
- 42:04Speaker 6: And they were like sophomore year came around, They're like, girl,
- 42:07Speaker 6: you gotta.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Pick a major.
- 42:10Speaker 7: So I was like, oh, I'll.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Just do like media management like hid the camera stuff.
- 42:14Speaker 3: So that's what I did. It ended up being just like.
- 42:17Speaker 10: Such a vague major and.
- 42:18Speaker 6: I was not aware of that before I chose it.
- 42:21Speaker 6: But like, once I chose it, I had to keep
- 42:22Speaker 6: going because I.
- 42:23Speaker 10: Was not doing more than four years in college.
- 42:25Speaker 3: So what are you really better at?
- 42:27Speaker 2: Like, what are you like, really really good at what
- 42:29Speaker 2: I think.
- 42:30Speaker 6: I think I'm good at managing people because I'm a
- 42:32Speaker 6: super organized person. Okay, that's better like telling people what
- 42:36Speaker 6: to do than like then okay everything else.
- 42:39Speaker 3: But yeah, I think I'm still figuring out.
- 42:43Speaker 6: I still haven't really found my lane. Yeah, I would
- 42:45Speaker 6: love to find it soon.
- 42:47Speaker 4: But why And that's I think that's such a misconception
- 42:51Speaker 4: that there's this final destination with life. But I know
- 42:54Speaker 4: of a girl who was studying to become a nurse,
- 42:57Speaker 4: and she lived in Boston. One day she woke up
- 43:00Speaker 4: and she was like, I want to be a fashion designer,
- 43:03Speaker 4: and she packed up her bags and moved to l A.
- 43:05Speaker 4: There shouldn't be this pressure to figure out who you're
- 43:08Speaker 4: supposed to be, because next year you may stumble.
- 43:12Speaker 3: And and and evolve.
- 43:14Speaker 4: And and want to change courses. And the beauty about life
- 43:18Speaker 4: is that every day, like Justin said, is a gift
- 43:20Speaker 4: when you get to wake up and you can pivot at.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Any point because something can happen, because something you can
- 43:26Speaker 1: be inspired to go and help or solve or dedicate
- 43:30Speaker 1: your life to do something else.
- 43:31Speaker 7: So to have it figured out.
- 43:34Speaker 4: There's no such thing as There's no such thing as that,
- 43:37Speaker 4: So I don't know where where we got this idea
- 43:39Speaker 4: that we were I.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Think it's just a little pressure because.
- 43:44Speaker 5: Yeah, he's been doing it, but that's not what that's not.
- 43:55Speaker 4: It's unfortunately our dads don't Our dads really don't.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Live in reality.
- 44:00Speaker 4: She was like, she like, like, you know, they they
- 44:05Speaker 4: are in a very special situation. But for us, every
- 44:09Speaker 4: day people, that may not be our journey. We may
- 44:13Speaker 4: not just find one thing that we're good at and
- 44:16Speaker 4: continue down that path for the rest of our lives.
- 44:19Speaker 4: And I think that's the beauty of life, being able
- 44:21Speaker 4: to wake up and go down whichever lane you choose to.
- 44:26Speaker 7: And I'm a blast you, Maria.
- 44:28Speaker 2: You've tried different business, so many things.
- 44:30Speaker 1: So she's tried, she said, all these different she tries
- 44:33Speaker 1: and then hip it doesn't work, she moves on to
- 44:34Speaker 1: something else. She tries something else, she moves I mean,
- 44:38Speaker 1: it's not about like failing at it. She's just started.
- 44:40Speaker 4: I just start, you know, when I started to do
- 44:42Speaker 4: this podcast a month ago, and.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Then she caught me and I'm.
- 44:47Speaker 7: She was like, do you want to do do you
- 44:49Speaker 7: want to do a podcasts?
- 44:49Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, well, happy Tuesday, Maria.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I'm sure, literally.
- 44:54Speaker 4: And we're here because I'm like, you know what, and
- 44:57Speaker 4: I wanted to do a podcast today, so I researched
- 45:00Speaker 4: and I talk to people and look where we're at.
- 45:03Speaker 7: So that's just look at it, you know.
- 45:05Speaker 4: So that's just the beauty of it. So don't feel
- 45:07Speaker 4: like you have to have it figured out, especially not
- 45:10Speaker 4: at twenty three.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Girl.
- 45:11Speaker 4: You gotta live, you live, You gotta live your life.
- 45:15Speaker 4: We do want to ask each of you one more question.
- 45:18Speaker 4: Both of your dads have left their mark in basketball,
- 45:22Speaker 4: So how do you want to legendize to mayor created
- 45:25Speaker 4: that word legendize your world?
- 45:29Speaker 3: And justin We'll start with you.
- 45:32Speaker 9: So basically, how I want to leave Yeah, I want
- 45:36Speaker 9: to leave your mark. If I had it my way,
- 45:41Speaker 9: I would be someone who was looked at that was
- 45:47Speaker 9: an innovative leader. When I say that, what I enjoy
- 45:52Speaker 9: doing is looking at the world and seeing problems and
- 45:56Speaker 9: then creating solutions for them. Okay, I love And if
- 46:00Speaker 9: I could do that for the rest of my life,
- 46:02Speaker 9: I would die happy.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Wow.
- 46:04Speaker 9: I can sit up and just come up with theoretical
- 46:08Speaker 9: or practical ideas that may not make sense to most people,
- 46:12Speaker 9: but they make sense to me. And if I can
- 46:15Speaker 9: find a way to monetize that, then I know that
- 46:21Speaker 9: only would I be helping a variety of people in
- 46:23Speaker 9: the world, but I would just be the world in
- 46:25Speaker 9: a better place. And that's that's what I would like
- 46:29Speaker 9: to do.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Are you working on anything now can you talk about
- 46:33Speaker 4: because let's let's get into that as well, just what
- 46:37Speaker 4: you are currently working on in your projects.
- 46:40Speaker 9: So right now, one of the projects we're working on
- 46:43Speaker 9: is trying to figure out how we can raise money
- 46:45Speaker 9: for nonprofits or individuals who are in the golf space. Okay,
- 46:52Speaker 9: so a lot of people will be like, that's just
- 46:55Speaker 9: a golf that's a sport as a game, but if
- 46:57Speaker 9: you look at it, there's a lot of tournaments that
- 47:01Speaker 9: are being held each year that people try to utilize
- 47:04Speaker 9: to raise money. And we found a way to leverage
- 47:08Speaker 9: that and to be able to not only increase the
- 47:12Speaker 9: eyes on your nonprofit, but to be able to raise
- 47:15Speaker 9: money for your nonprofit as well by way of this
- 47:19Speaker 9: golf application that we've come up with.
- 47:22Speaker 8: Solving a problem the name of let's talk about the
- 47:25Speaker 8: name combat.
- 47:27Speaker 9: Toni store, So you might go on there and take
- 47:29Speaker 9: a look at it. We're still working it out, but
- 47:32Speaker 9: it's it's in there. That's more than you know, what
- 47:35Speaker 9: we thought we would be at when we started this
- 47:37Speaker 9: in the first place. So it's still a growing thing.
- 47:40Speaker 9: It's something that we're excited about and congratulations. Ways to
- 47:44Speaker 9: make it better every day. So that's just one of
- 47:47Speaker 9: the ways that we're trying to be the world in
- 47:49Speaker 9: a better space.
- 47:50Speaker 4: It's through innovation technology.
- 47:53Speaker 9: Yeah, no matter what, no matter what avenue it is.
- 47:56Speaker 9: I said, it's it's it's a sport as a game.
- 47:58Speaker 9: But people are you lizing this to help raise money.
- 48:01Speaker 9: The money that's raised from these tournaments is being able
- 48:03Speaker 9: to be applied to areas that allow people to have
- 48:06Speaker 9: the comfortability of the word.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Well, I mean you make it up, we make it,
- 48:11Speaker 2: we make it out, We have the same.
- 48:13Speaker 9: Okay, that's what we're doing. But yeah, that's that's how
- 48:16Speaker 9: I like to leave my someone who's able to ways
- 48:20Speaker 9: to help people in so problems.
- 48:22Speaker 1: So buy iOS is combat golf combat golf?
- 48:26Speaker 4: So at combat golf and where can people find it on?
- 48:29Speaker 9: You can find out it's on Instagram.
- 48:32Speaker 8: At combat golf. Well you can't, we can we can
- 48:36Speaker 8: tag it.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, Sydney me.
- 48:41Speaker 3: I would just say.
- 48:44Speaker 6: Helping as many people as I can, and like being
- 48:47Speaker 6: able to inspire people. So I feel like I've just
- 48:49Speaker 6: been so blessed in life. I just want to be
- 48:51Speaker 6: able to like to give it back to like strangers
- 48:55Speaker 6: or my own family, and like everybody that supports me.
- 48:59Speaker 4: So being mind is just something that I wish everyone
- 49:04Speaker 4: knew how to do.
- 49:05Speaker 7: It's so simple.
- 49:05Speaker 8: The world needs it, so great job. Okay, so our final.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Duty on Born to the Game podcast episodes is to
- 49:17Speaker 1: sign the ball, so both of you can please sign it.
- 49:22Speaker 4: We're asking for y'all's autographs.
- 49:24Speaker 3: Yeah, oh my gosh, I finally get to sign a ball.
- 49:26Speaker 11: Yeah you do.
- 49:29Speaker 3: This is amazing. A mine is not cute. I have
- 49:36Speaker 3: a cute one and one. No, yours is cute, though
- 49:39Speaker 3: I saw I saw the little like the.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Mine looks like a five year old did it?
- 49:48Speaker 3: It's it's not It's not cute.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Did you see yours is on there?
- 49:52Speaker 3: You signed it first? I know five yeirl cannot do that.
- 49:56Speaker 8: Well maybe ten, okay, maybe ten year old?
- 50:01Speaker 3: Mm hmm. All right, So what do you wanna do
- 50:07Speaker 3: you want to do?
