- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17I am excited today to be in Isaiah chapter 26.
- 0:22Isaiah 26. We are in what's called the
- 0:24little Apocalypse of Isaiah. If you can think of it this way,
- 0:28it's like the Book of Revelation, but just 4 chapters
- 0:32within the scroll of Isaiah as he reflects on what God has said
- 0:38both to the nation of Israel and and Judah as a whole, and then
- 0:43specifically to Isaiah himself. And so we've seen over the last
- 0:47couple of episodes, Isaiah 24 that deals with the judgment,
- 0:52the justice that will come on all of the nations of the world.
- 0:57And then chapter 25, the future that God has planned, where even
- 1:01death itself is finally destroyed and done away with,
- 1:05and where God has a wonderful feast planned for his people.
- 1:10And that righteousness, goodness will be there.
- 1:13He will wipe away the tears from every face and remove shame.
- 1:19And what a joy that that will be.
- 1:22So then today we are in Charter 26 and it says this.
- 1:26On that day, this song will be sung.
- 1:29In the land of Judah we have a strong city.
- 1:32Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.
- 1:36The thing defending this group of people is not simply some
- 1:41large rocks or concrete or anything like that.
- 1:44Bricks, nothing like that. Salvation, God's rescue, is what
- 1:49defends this people. Verse #2 Open the gates so that
- 1:53a righteous nation can come in, one that remains faithful.
- 1:57We're supposed to be reminded here of chapter 2, where this is
- 2:01God's end game, that currently wicked, evil Jerusalem that was
- 2:05compared to Sodom and Gomorrah in chapter 1.
- 2:10God wants to renew and restore and revitalize his people so
- 2:15that they can be righteous, so that they can have the
- 2:18relationship both with God and with each other that he made
- 2:22them for. And so this is this righteous
- 2:24nation, this good city with walls of salvation.
- 2:28This is what God is building towards.
- 2:31Verse #3 You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in
- 2:35perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.
- 2:40I love this verse. This one is 1.
- 2:43I definitely always heard it bereft of the context of this
- 2:48particular song. But how much more true In light
- 2:51of the millennial reign of Christ, in light of heaven, in
- 2:55light of eternity with God. God keeps us in perfect peace.
- 3:03He says you will keep the mind that is dependent on you in
- 3:06perfect peace, in those moments when we're not dependent on
- 3:09ourselves, but when we are dependent on God and when we
- 3:13recognize God. If I'm going to make it through
- 3:14today in a good way, it's going to be because of you.
- 3:18If I'm going to pass this class, it's going to be because of you.
- 3:21If I'm going to not get fired from my job, or if I'm going to
- 3:25be a good husband today, or if I'm going to do actions that are
- 3:30right in your sight, or if I'm going to say words that are good
- 3:34and build others up and challenge and warn them and
- 3:37encourage them, that will only happen through you.
- 3:39When we are dependent on God and we recognize that we have an
- 3:44intentional reliance on God, it says you will keep the mind that
- 3:47is dependent on you in perfect peace because it is trusting in
- 3:52you. An anxious life, an anxious mind
- 3:57results from us not understanding that God is in
- 4:01control, that God cares about us, He loves us, He is building
- 4:05us and moving in US towards His good goal.
- 4:09That we would be made into the image of Christ.
- 4:12That we would show others what God is like in our words and our
- 4:15attitudes and our actions. That is, if you will, the end
- 4:19game. And so that is where we are
- 4:21headed. Verse #4 trust in Yahweh
- 4:23forever, because in Yahweh, Yahweh Himself is an everlasting
- 4:28rock. We can trust, trust in God,
- 4:30because he is just as firm and stable and unmoving as even the
- 4:37rocks. Verse #5 For he is humbled those
- 4:40who live in lofty places, an inaccessible city.
- 4:44He brings it down, He brings it down to the ground.
- 4:47He throws it to the dust. Feet trample it.
- 4:50The feet of the humble, the steps of the poor.
- 4:53So here is not intended to bring to mind like an invading army
- 4:57that just really destroys everything here.
- 5:00The humble and the poor, they aren't the ones that are able to
- 5:03overthrow high and lofty towers and places that are super
- 5:08inaccessible for invading armies.
- 5:12God brings down the proud and he makes it so that those who had
- 5:15nothing are able to step on good, rich, amazing ground.
- 5:22That we'd be reminded of what Jesus tells us in the Beatitudes
- 5:27in the Sermon on the Mount. Blessed are the poor in spirit,
- 5:31for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 5:34Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
- 5:37Those types of thoughts verse #7 the path of the righteous is
- 5:42level. You clear a straight path for
- 5:45the righteous. Yes, Yahweh, we wait for you in
- 5:48the path of your judgments. Our desire is for your name and
- 5:53renown is your hope, your goal, your desire that God would be
- 5:58respected and loved and known by those in your life?
- 6:03Is that your desire Now? You can't make that happen in
- 6:06any other person, but is the way that you're talking, is the way
- 6:10that you are living, are your interactions with other people
- 6:13leading them to come to that conclusion that at least if they
- 6:18don't believe it, if they don't believe God is great, they
- 6:20genuinely believe that you think that?
- 6:23Are you convincing others that you believe that your God is
- 6:27great and worthy of praise and renown?
- 6:30Verse #9 I long for you in the night.
- 6:33Yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks you.
- 6:36For when your judgments are in the land, the inhabitants of the
- 6:40world will learn righteousness. When God's Spirit is at work, we
- 6:44learn who we ought to be, how we ought to interact with God and
- 6:48with man. And so that's why I'm so
- 6:50thankful for the Holy Spirit, that His Holy Spirit within me,
- 6:54God's own presence in my life will lead me if I listen to Him,
- 6:59it will lead me in the right way.
- 7:01Verse #10 But if the wicked man is shown favor, he does not
- 7:05learn righteousness in an sorry, he does not learn righteousness
- 7:09in a righteous land. He acts unjustly and does not
- 7:13see the majesty of Yahweh. So both the humble, the poor,
- 7:20the needy, the righteous, these are the ones that God loves.
- 7:24These are the ones that God wants to exalt, those that
- 7:27insist on their own pride, their own wickedness.
- 7:31As those people are lifted up, whether you know, politically,
- 7:36financially and monetarily, those wicked people who are
- 7:40lifted up, they do not become more righteous even when they're
- 7:44around good people. They just continue in their
- 7:48wickedness. So I want to challenge you.
- 7:50Just having more good come into your life does not mean that you
- 7:55would be able to trust or love or worship God more.
- 7:57In fact, for those whose hearts are set against the Lord, the
- 8:01more and more good that God shows them throughout their
- 8:03life, the more and more that they ignore Him and they think
- 8:06that they have put together their life.
- 8:08They are the reason for their successes or their triumphs or
- 8:11their great business deals. But everything that we have
- 8:16comes from the Lord Himself. I'm not sitting in this chair
- 8:20today with my Bible or this microphone or that computer.
- 8:24I am not here because I am some great, intelligent, awesome,
- 8:29diligent person. I'm here by the grace of God.
- 8:33And, you know, seasonal allergy season, the Lord could Take Me
- 8:37Out tomorrow and I can, you know, be dead from a bee sting
- 8:41or something. I, I don't think I'm that
- 8:42allergic to, to bees, but I could pass tomorrow and God
- 8:48would still be just as good and not giving me good things.
- 8:51Or he can give me all of the wonderful things that I have
- 8:54experienced and am experiencing in my life.
- 8:57And so I just need to follow and love the Lord.
- 9:00And I want to encourage you, God's goodness to you is not
- 9:03shown in the abundance of the things that he gives.
- 9:07It is shown to you in the person of Jesus.
- 9:10And if that's enough for you, if Jesus is enough for you, that
- 9:13relationship with God is what you want in life.
- 9:16Wonderful, my friend. You, you are set for this day of
- 9:21that wonderful future. If that's not enough for you, if
- 9:25you say well, yeah, Jesus is great, but what I really want is
- 9:29this laundry list of items in the here and now, my friend,
- 9:34consider the wicked, that even when they are shown favor by
- 9:37God, when He gives grace to them, they do not care.
- 9:42It's not enough. And they will, they will
- 9:44continue living in their wickedness and their
- 9:47unrighteousness. They will not change their ways.
- 9:51Don't be like that person. Be like these righteous, the
- 9:54poor and the needy, those ones who know that they are dependent
- 9:58on God. Verse #11 Yahweh, your hand is
- 10:01lifted up to take action, but they don't see it.
- 10:03Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame.
- 10:08Let fire consume your adversaries.
- 10:11Yahweh, You will establish peace for us, for you have also done
- 10:15all our work for us. Yahweh, our God Lords other than
- 10:20you have owned us, but we remember your name alone.
- 10:25Basically God, you are the one that is truly in charge of us
- 10:28and we have served other masters in our lives.
- 10:31But God, you are the only one that we care about.
- 10:34You are the only one that is ultimately deserving of our
- 10:37obedience and our time and our worship.
- 10:40Verse 14 The dead do not live. Departed spirits don't rise up.
- 10:44Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them.
- 10:47You have wiped out all memory of them.
- 10:49You have added to the nation Yahweh.
- 10:51You've added to the nation. You are honored.
- 10:54You have expanded all the borders of the land, Yahweh.
- 10:58They went to you in their distress.
- 11:00They poured out whispered prayers because your discipline
- 11:03fell on them. As a pregnant woman about to
- 11:05give birth rise and cries out in her veins.
- 11:08So we were before you, Yahweh. We became pregnant, We writhed
- 11:13in pain. We gave birth to wind.
- 11:15That is emptiness, uselessness, futility.
- 11:18We have won no victories on earth and the earth's
- 11:21inhabitants have not fallen. So here number of things are
- 11:25being said. Judgement comes and when the
- 11:28judgement comes, those dead aren't coming back to life to
- 11:32defeat what God has done. So God is winning victories.
- 11:37There are people that are crying out to the Lord that He is
- 11:40caring for. They pray because of the
- 11:44difficulties that God brings in and it turns their hearts to
- 11:47realize that they need Him. All of that has happened and
- 11:51this end section here of verses 17 and 18 talks about Israel
- 11:57needing victory and finding no victory, and so they need the
- 12:02Lord that all of their hardships seem to have been for no
- 12:07ultimate purpose. So that's kind of what we read
- 12:10there verse #19 your dead will live, their bodies will rise.
- 12:14This is the resurrection of the righteous awake and sing, you
- 12:19who dwell in the dust, for you will be covered with the
- 12:22Mountain Dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.
- 12:27Verse #20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and close your doors
- 12:30behind you. Hide for a little while until
- 12:33the wrath has passed. For look, Yahweh is coming from
- 12:37his place here, God Himself. He's not just in the heavens.
- 12:40There's not just going to be good here on earth.
- 12:42God Himself is coming down. Yahweh is coming from his place
- 12:47to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.
- 12:50The earth will reveal the bloodshed on it and will no
- 12:53longer conceal her stain. So we're going to look next
- 12:57episode at a little bit more of what is transpiring there.
- 13:02But I love at the end of there of chapter 26, there is a time
- 13:09for the people of God where they can hide safely away.
- 13:13There would be some things kind of echoed in the same mindset by
- 13:17Christ in Matthew 24 and what's called the all of it discourse
- 13:22that is Jesus talking about the end of days.
- 13:26He uses some language that would be indicative of the destruction
- 13:32of Jerusalem in 8070. So that's partially in view, but
- 13:38also the future judgment that would come in which the people
- 13:42of God would do well to hide themselves away, to sequester
- 13:47away during times of massive global upheaval and violence.
- 13:55A lot of that's talked about in Matthew 24.
- 13:57Mark 13 deals a little bit with that.
- 14:00We did the Tabernacle Talk episode on that one.
- 14:03I've not gone through the whole book of Matthew yet, and so I do
- 14:07not have an episode on Matthew 24, but I think that would be a
- 14:11great study together. So what do we make of this?
- 14:17Number one, God's plans are for the humble, the needy, the
- 14:24righteous, those people that are not insistent on their own way,
- 14:29their own greatness, their own like self dependence.
- 14:34God's plan is for those people who recognize that they need
- 14:37God, the people that believe that they have no use for God,
- 14:41that they are superior to God, that even God's grace and His
- 14:45blessings on their life are simply their own doing.
- 14:50They will live for all of their eternity without God.
- 14:55They will get their ultimate wish.
- 14:58But for those that desperately want and need God, He is always
- 15:02there for us. He does not always change the
- 15:06circumstances of our life as He's there, but He can help our
- 15:10inside our mind experience true peace, tranquility, that Shalom,
- 15:18that calm settledness, even in unsettling and horrific
- 15:27circumstances. One of the things I love
- 15:29especially about the Old Testament it is is that it does
- 15:32not written from the perspective of a bunch of people who were in
- 15:36powerful, comfortable positions just thinking about the future
- 15:40and all the people that they could come down hard on.
- 15:43Instead, the Old Testament here with Isaiah, he is a deeply
- 15:49unpopular person. History or some historians would
- 15:56say that Isaiah ended up losing his life, being cut in half as a
- 16:02result of the hatred of the rulers of Judah for his
- 16:07particular preaching and what he was saying about their wrong
- 16:10actions. So Isaiah, he's not preaching a
- 16:13popular message to people. Instead he is in essence saying
- 16:17we have so butchered God's plan that his promises that he told
- 16:22us at the beginning of the judgement that would come on us
- 16:25that we would be exiled. All of that is going to come to
- 16:28pass now. God in his love, he will bring
- 16:30us back. And there is a grand future that
- 16:33is awaiting the people of God still, but we are going to have
- 16:37to go through hard times. And so recognizing this is the
- 16:42unpopular opinion at the time based on a speaking to the
- 16:48moment and the faults in the moment, I think all of that is
- 16:52tremendously valuable for us that we don't have to come to
- 16:56the Bible and go, well, yeah, that was easy for them to say.
- 16:59These were hard truths then and they're hard truths now, truths
- 17:02now. But the comfort is it is from
- 17:06the Lord, the Word, the things that are being said are the
- 17:10declaration of God. And so because of that, we can
- 17:13go to the bank with it. We can trust entirely in what
- 17:17God has said. I hope that this would be an
- 17:20encouragement to you today. Next episode, there's a really
- 17:25fun section of a fun final picture of that feast that the
- 17:30people of God will go through at the end of time as Yahweh
- 17:35returns, as he makes all things right.
- 17:38We're going to have a meal together.
- 17:40And I love the poetic way that Isaiah puts it.
- 17:43So I'm looking forward to that next episode with you.
- 17:46Thank you for tuning in. God bless.
