- 0:00Speaker 1: Springtime. About seven years ago, Aaron Orcutt was loving her
- 0:05Speaker 1: life as a new mom. You enjoyed being a young mother.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot of fun. It's a great privilege
- 0:10Speaker 2: to be able to be a mother.
- 0:12Speaker 1: When she wasn't busy with her son, she was busy working.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Aaron was a cocktail waitress at a restaurant in Ontario, California.
- 0:20Speaker 2: At the time. I would spend my weeks with my son,
- 0:24Speaker 2: and on the weekends I would be at work pretty
- 0:28Speaker 2: much from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But one Saturday in April, business was slow here and
- 0:35Speaker 1: suddenly had an afternoon to herself. When she left work early.
- 0:38Speaker 2: You get off in the middle of the day, You're
- 0:40Speaker 2: excited about having the rest of your evening. You're not
- 0:44Speaker 2: thinking bad things are going to happen to.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You, But something really bad was about to happen.
- 0:50Speaker 2: When I got to my car, I had a habit
- 0:53Speaker 2: of clicking my unlocked button twice because it unlocks all
- 0:57Speaker 2: the doors.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Just as Aaron opened her door, she heard get in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the car. At first, she thought it was just a
- 1:05Speaker 1: coworker pulling a prank. When did you start realizing that
- 1:08Speaker 1: this is serious?
- 1:09Speaker 2: But when I saw the gun.
- 1:11Speaker 1: This was no joke. The stranger had a gun pointed
- 1:15Speaker 1: directly at Aaron. She knew hollering for help wouldn't do
- 1:19Speaker 1: any good.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's very rare for the parking lot to be empty.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Unfortunately for me, it was empty.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And if someone did pass, they likely would not see
- 1:30Speaker 1: the gun.
- 1:31Speaker 2: He had very low to his waist, and he had
- 1:34Speaker 2: a friend behind him who was kind of blocking from
- 1:38Speaker 2: the aisle direction.
- 1:39Speaker 1: He had an accomplice. Aaron worried if she tried to
- 1:43Speaker 1: make a run for it, he shoot instead, she followed
- 1:47Speaker 1: his commands.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I got in the car, He got in the passenger
- 1:51Speaker 2: seat and told me to drive.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The accomplice stayed behind, and now Aaron and her abductor
- 1:57Speaker 1: were alone, leaving them all parking lot on a ride
- 2:01Speaker 1: to Hell.
- 2:02Speaker 2: He didn't tell me where to drive, and since I
- 2:05Speaker 2: grew up in the area, they knew of a few
- 2:07Speaker 2: places where cops tended to hang out, so I figured
- 2:11Speaker 2: I would try to steer that direction. I contemplated driving
- 2:16Speaker 2: my car off the road, or ramming it to somebody else,
- 2:20Speaker 2: or just putting it in park and running.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Aaron was also begging the strange man to let her go.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I pleaded with him, just you know, you can take
- 2:29Speaker 2: my car. I'm not worried about it. I won't call
- 2:31Speaker 2: the cops. Just take my car and let me out.
- 2:35Speaker 1: When he told her to pull over, Aaron drove into
- 2:38Speaker 1: a restaurant lot where she'd always seen cops hanging out.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Hopefully somebody's fair and maybe that'll scare him, the fact
- 2:45Speaker 2: that there's a cop right there. Unfortunately for me, there
- 2:49Speaker 2: was no cop there.
- 2:51Speaker 1: The gunman ordered her to drive around to the back
- 2:54Speaker 1: of the building, but she couldn't.
- 2:56Speaker 2: There was a storage unit attached to it. He couldn't
- 2:58Speaker 2: get back there without a code. He was very upset.
- 3:01Speaker 2: He kept going drive around at the back, and I said,
- 3:04Speaker 2: there is no back.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Surveillance video obtained exclusively by Crime Watch Daily shows Aaron
- 3:10Speaker 1: and her abductor pulling into the parking lots.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I'm parked facing a window into a storage facility and
- 3:16Speaker 2: there's a you know, not a there's a gas station
- 3:20Speaker 2: down the street. There's a Denny's behind me, there's a
- 3:22Speaker 2: liquor store right there. I thought, there's no way, there's
- 3:26Speaker 2: no way anything's gonna happen.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But Aaron was wrong. As soon as she parked the
- 3:32Speaker 1: gun and forced her at gunpoint into the back seat.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I started crying. He got in the back seat with
- 3:38Speaker 2: me and kind of sat where my car seat was.
- 3:42Speaker 1: He was sitting on top of your baby's seat, Aaron says.
- 3:46Speaker 1: He then ordered her to take off her clothes. She
- 3:50Speaker 1: desperately pleaded with him to let her go. He made
- 3:53Speaker 1: it clear that wasn't going to happen. This nightmare was
- 3:57Speaker 1: far from over.
- 3:58Speaker 2: He ended up putting the gun to my head and
- 4:01Speaker 2: told me to stop crying. He actually ratched the gun
- 4:07Speaker 2: and a bullet popped out and landed in the seat.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I knew the gun was fully loaded.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You knew he meant business up next a daring escape.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I booked it out, running, crying and screaming.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The breathless moment caught on tape, and what the rapist
- 4:25Speaker 1: leaves behind leaves cops speechless. What did you think when
- 4:31Speaker 1: you saw that I was shark? Aaron Orcutt was all
- 4:37Speaker 1: smiles as she left her waitressing job one Saturday afternoon
- 4:40Speaker 1: in April.
- 4:41Speaker 2: It happened to get off early. We were incredibly dead, but.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Moments later, the single mom's care free spirit would be
- 4:51Speaker 1: filled with terror.
- 4:54Speaker 2: He had a gun pointed at me. He told me
- 4:56Speaker 2: to get in the car.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Aaron was forced to drive while the strange gunman sexually
- 5:02Speaker 1: assaulted her. Before long, she parked in what she thought
- 5:05Speaker 1: would be a safe spot.
- 5:07Speaker 2: There's a lot of foot traffic that goes on in
- 5:09Speaker 2: the area.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Despite the businesses all around. The dark tinted windows made
- 5:13Speaker 1: it impossible for anyone to see what was now happening
- 5:17Speaker 1: in the back of her suv.
- 5:20Speaker 2: He told me to get undressed, and I was crying,
- 5:24Speaker 2: shaking up controllably.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Aaron's tears quickly dry up when her abductor sticks the
- 5:30Speaker 1: gun in her mouth, aggressively, demanding she shut up. What
- 5:34Speaker 1: did you do?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Then he had me sit on top of his lap
- 5:40Speaker 2: and he tried tried to penetrate me, but he couldn't
- 5:47Speaker 2: do it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But Aaron says that didn't matter. The abuse continued.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He had me, but he was taking pictures the entire time,
- 5:58Speaker 2: and I looked up and he smiled, and he snapped again,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and then he told me to smile pretty and took
- 6:07Speaker 2: a picture of me without my clothes on it.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Not only was he taking pictures, the violet rapist started
- 6:15Speaker 1: texting the lude photos to the accomplice. He left back
- 6:18Speaker 1: at the mall parking lot. The two men were soon
- 6:21Speaker 1: talking on the phone.
- 6:22Speaker 2: His friend was like, where are you? He goes, Oh,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you don't see me. I'm right here, and was playing around.
- 6:29Speaker 2: He was laughing on his phone. I couldn't leep it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: The laughter didn't last, hearn says. In an instant, rage
- 6:38Speaker 1: took over.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He'd just stare at me, just dead eyes, and just
- 6:43Speaker 2: hit me. He socked me in the face a few times.
- 6:46Speaker 2: He had me get on my stomach, and he tried
- 6:51Speaker 2: to rape me from behind. He really couldn't.
- 6:55Speaker 1: After about an hour, the gunman told Aaron to get dressed.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Their road trip was about to take an even darker turn.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He had mentioned that we were going to go to
- 7:06Speaker 2: the desert and finish this. I knew if I didn't
- 7:09Speaker 2: get out right then and there, there's no way I
- 7:13Speaker 2: would have made it out.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Though racked with fear, she discreetly noticed his gun had
- 7:19Speaker 1: fallen to the floor and was now under the passenger seat.
- 7:23Speaker 1: She thought about the childlock on her back door.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I had childlocks on the side of the car that
- 7:29Speaker 2: he was on, and the side that I was on
- 7:32Speaker 2: was behind the driver's side door. There was no childlocks.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Just then, her attacker's phone rang again, and this time
- 7:40Speaker 1: when he answered, Aaron's survivoran state kicked into full throttle.
- 7:45Speaker 1: It was now or never.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I threw the door open and I ran like the
- 7:50Speaker 2: hounds of how were on my heels.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Crime Watch Daily has obtained this exclusive surveillance video showing
- 7:57Speaker 1: Aaron's desperate sprint to safety. What you can can't hear
- 8:00Speaker 1: were her piercing screens for help the entire time.
- 8:05Speaker 2: He said he has gun. He has a gun. Everybody
- 8:07Speaker 2: get back inside.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Aaron had no idea, but the owner of the nearby
- 8:12Speaker 1: liquor store had been keeping a suspicious eye on her SUV.
- 8:16Speaker 1: He knew there were two people inside. He was about
- 8:19Speaker 1: to call police.
- 8:21Speaker 2: He grabbed me inside and he threw me behind the register.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So I just at that point I lost it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Detective Robert Marquez with the Ontario Police Department was one
- 8:32Speaker 1: of the first on scene. He says, if Aaron hadn't
- 8:36Speaker 1: run when she did, she wouldn't be telling her story.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I don't think he was going to let her go.
- 8:42Speaker 4: He had done too many things in front of too
- 8:45Speaker 4: many cameras, and his plan was to take her somewhere
- 8:51Speaker 4: and harm her.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You feel that her attacker planned to kill her.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Once Aaron made her dangerous escape, the gunman tried to
- 9:02Speaker 1: make his own.
- 9:03Speaker 2: He had grabbed my keys and tried to start my car,
- 9:06Speaker 2: but I had a kill switch, so he couldn't have
- 9:09Speaker 2: started the car unless he knew where the censor was.
- 9:11Speaker 1: When he couldn't drive away, he took off on foot,
- 9:15Speaker 1: quickly getting lost in all the traffic. His getaway wouldn't
- 9:19Speaker 1: last long Erica's attacker made one critical mistake.
- 9:24Speaker 3: He left his gun inside the car.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And that's not all.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Taped on the bottom of the magazine was his name.
- 9:32Speaker 1: My stomach dropped, kidnapped at gunpoint while leaving work here
- 9:37Speaker 1: an or Cut was beaten and raped inside her suv.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The horrifying assault went on for more than an hour
- 9:45Speaker 1: before she finally broke free and fled for her life.
- 9:50Speaker 4: I think he was surprised that she escaped, and then
- 9:52Speaker 4: he went into a panic type mode.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But in his own rush to get away, the attacker
- 9:59Speaker 1: left behind plenty of evidence.
- 10:01Speaker 4: We were able to locate his gun, her clothing, biological fluids,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and his sunglasses.
- 10:12Speaker 1: And right there, taped on the bottom of the gun's
- 10:15Speaker 1: magazine was their biggest clue the suspect's name, but strangely,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it was a labeling technique Detective Robert Marquez knew very well.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Normally police officers they will put their name on the
- 10:28Speaker 4: bottom of the magazine in case they have to let
- 10:31Speaker 4: somebody else use their magazine and a gunfight.
- 10:34Speaker 1: What did you think when you saw that?
- 10:36Speaker 3: I was shocked and.
- 10:38Speaker 1: His shock was about to turn to outrage. As cops
- 10:43Speaker 1: were investigating Aaron's abduction and Officer Anthony Orbin from the
- 10:47Speaker 1: nearby city of Westminster was reporting his gun missing or
- 10:51Speaker 1: stolen in the Ontario area.
- 10:54Speaker 4: They kind of put two and two together and they decided, hey,
- 10:56Speaker 4: this is related.
- 10:58Speaker 1: But related how detectives knew either the sick man who
- 11:02Speaker 1: kidnapped and raped Aaron had used a CoP's gun or
- 11:07Speaker 1: the demented attacker was a cop himself. Officer Orban was
- 11:12Speaker 1: tracked down to a nearby parking lot where he was
- 11:15Speaker 1: helping a friend and fellow officer find his truck.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Yes, Jeffrey Jellinick was a correctional officer for the state
- 11:22Speaker 4: of California.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Orban and Jelinek matched the descriptions Aaron had given of
- 11:27Speaker 1: her attacker and his accomplice. They even had her keys.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Aaron was soon brought over to id them both.
- 11:35Speaker 2: There was I don't know, maybe ten ten cop cars
- 11:39Speaker 2: with floodlights just lighting himnot. I've never seen anything like
- 11:43Speaker 2: that before. They pulled right up and let me IDM in.
- 11:47Speaker 2: As soon as I did, they took me back to
- 11:50Speaker 2: the to the hospital.
- 11:52Speaker 1: How did that sit with you when you learned that
- 11:54Speaker 1: your attacker was a police officer.
- 11:57Speaker 2: My initial thought was, oh my gosh, but nobody's ever
- 12:01Speaker 2: going to see justice for this because he's one of them.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I was very fortunate to be wrong.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Officers Orban and Joel Mech were immediately taken into custody suddenly.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Both claimed they couldn't remember a thing.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Stirs Car, I don't know. Do you remember pulling down
- 12:23Speaker 5: your pens?
- 12:24Speaker 1: No? Why?
- 12:25Speaker 4: Ay?
- 12:25Speaker 5: Want of you guys, everybody, David Buster, I don't know.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Do you remember following a regular car?
- 12:29Speaker 3: I don't.
- 12:31Speaker 1: In this exclusive video obtained by Crime Watch Daily, officer
- 12:35Speaker 1: Orbon claims he drank too many margaritas at lunch, causing
- 12:40Speaker 1: him to black out.
- 12:41Speaker 5: I haven't drank in a very very long time.
- 12:46Speaker 1: But what he did admit to detectives coroborated what era
- 12:50Speaker 1: and cheerfully revealed, I've.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Been on any depressant center. Just choose your sex. Does
- 12:56Speaker 5: it cause you to have a hard time? I usually can't,
- 13:01Speaker 5: even so we have trouble getting yes.
- 13:06Speaker 1: After a short time behind bars, Officer Jelnik appearently regained
- 13:11Speaker 1: some of his memory.
- 13:12Speaker 4: He told us at the very end of his interrogation,
- 13:16Speaker 4: you might want to look at the photos. And I said,
- 13:19Speaker 4: what photos? And he said, the photos on my phone?
- 13:23Speaker 3: Anyway?
- 13:24Speaker 1: What on his phone? All the pictures Anthony Orbin snapped
- 13:30Speaker 1: while forcing Aaron to perform sex acts on him.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I couldn't believe what I was saying. I just thought,
- 13:37Speaker 3: this poor girl.
- 13:38Speaker 1: He sent those photos to jel Nik Why?
- 13:41Speaker 4: I think they were playing some type of sick game
- 13:45Speaker 4: and tried to outdo each other.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Even though his friend came, Anthony was sticking to his script.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Jeff a little bit more. He's not losing his whole
- 13:56Speaker 5: crew for you what. I don't remember anything. He didn't
- 14:02Speaker 5: hear anything here, but all of a sudden, I don't
- 14:05Speaker 5: remember anything.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Detectives say. Even when they weren't in the room, Officer
- 14:09Speaker 1: Orbin kept up the charade.
- 14:12Speaker 5: He's got to be a dream.
- 14:15Speaker 3: What is going on?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Kind because he knows the camera's there. He's an investigator himself.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He's a police officer.
- 14:22Speaker 3: He was assigned to sex investigations.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Wait, he's a sex crimes officer. Yes, what type of
- 14:29Speaker 1: irony is this? Are you in disbelief?
- 14:32Speaker 3: Absolutely, And in.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yet another shocking twist, the same antidepressant and officer Orben
- 14:39Speaker 1: blamed for his impotence problem, he also blamed for the
- 14:44Speaker 1: assault on Aaron.
- 14:45Speaker 4: He claimed that he had taken zoloft while he was
- 14:49Speaker 4: drinking alcohol.
- 14:50Speaker 1: So he said the zoloft made him do it.
- 14:53Speaker 3: That's correct.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Officer Orbin pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, claiming
- 14:58Speaker 1: the zoloft left him unconscious during the attack.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I was pissed, so pissed. So many people are on
- 15:05Speaker 2: sole oft and they're not going to go off and
- 15:07Speaker 2: rape somebody and kidnap them a gume point. It was
- 15:10Speaker 2: an excuse. It was excuse after excuse after excuse, and
- 15:13Speaker 2: it was all about him being the victim.
- 15:16Speaker 1: But there was an actual victim. Aaron or cut though
- 15:20Speaker 1: the terror from a rape at gunpoint was over and
- 15:23Speaker 1: her attack or behind bars, she was now facing a
- 15:28Speaker 1: second frightening ordeal.
- 15:30Speaker 2: He was making phone calls that were being recorded from
- 15:32Speaker 2: the jail, making statements like it would be a lot
- 15:35Speaker 2: easier if the witness wasn't around. And I was getting
- 15:40Speaker 2: weird phone calls, and I did get followed on the freeway,
- 15:43Speaker 2: and we didn't know if it was related or not,
- 15:45Speaker 2: but I was terrified.
- 15:47Speaker 1: The District Attorney's office was so worried about possible retaliation
- 15:51Speaker 1: Aaron had to remain in seclusion during the trial.
- 15:54Speaker 2: They did everything in their power, aside from witness protection,
- 15:58Speaker 2: just to make sure that I was safe.
- 16:01Speaker 1: She was only allowed to attend Orban's trial the day
- 16:04Speaker 1: she testified and the day the verdicts were handed.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Down when they found him guilty on all counts, and
- 16:11Speaker 2: Fane I broke. I just I broke down because at
- 16:15Speaker 2: that point I'm thinking, oh my gosh, there's an end
- 16:17Speaker 2: to this now.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Jurors rejected his insanity defense, finding Anthony Orben guilty of kidnapping, rape,
- 16:26Speaker 1: and multiple counts of sexual assault eight felony counts in all.
- 16:31Speaker 1: His accomplice Jeff Jellinek, had testified against him in court,
- 16:35Speaker 1: agreeing to plead no contest in exchange for a lighter sentence.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Jelinik was eventually sentenced to five years. After he was released,
- 16:44Speaker 4: he went back to live with his mom and dad,
- 16:46Speaker 4: Beck East.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Two and a half years after she was kidnapped and raped.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Aaron was going to confront or attack her in court
- 16:55Speaker 1: on sentencing day. Brave Aaron was more than ready.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I got a phone call and they told me you
- 17:02Speaker 2: may not have to even come down today. They found
- 17:04Speaker 2: him dead in his cell.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Anthony Orbin committed suicide by hanging himself.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I needed that closure, and I was just in tears.
- 17:15Speaker 2: If I had been right there willing to forgive him,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and once that happened, I was finding it very hard
- 17:21Speaker 2: to cling to that forgiveness.
- 17:25Speaker 1: In a highly unusual and unprecedented move, the judge still
- 17:30Speaker 1: allowed Aaron to read her victim impact statement while Anthony's
- 17:34Speaker 1: family respectfully remained in court and listened.
- 17:39Speaker 2: No amount of reasoning can justify the horrors that I
- 17:41Speaker 2: was forced to endure that day, and those who tried
- 17:44Speaker 2: She'd be ashamed of themselves. I am disappointed that a
- 17:47Speaker 2: person in your position would have behaved in such a way,
- 17:51Speaker 2: and that you tried to get away with it instead
- 17:53Speaker 2: of owning up to your actions like a real man.
- 17:56Speaker 2: But then a real man would never have kidnapped, raped,
- 17:59Speaker 2: beaten and terrorized a woman. I choose to live my
- 18:02Speaker 2: life and take back any power that your actions may
- 18:04Speaker 2: have had over me. To do so, I have to
- 18:07Speaker 2: do something that I have struggled with and never thought
- 18:09Speaker 2: I would be able to do. I forgive you, so
- 18:12Speaker 2: in your heart you found room to forgive him. You
- 18:16Speaker 2: can't move on without doing so.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Aaron has moved on, but it hasn't been easy. Diagnosed
- 18:23Speaker 1: with post traumatic stress disorder, Aaron has suffered from panic
- 18:27Speaker 1: attacks and depression, and yet this strong survivor refuses to break.
- 18:34Speaker 2: And it was either okay, get back up and figure
- 18:38Speaker 2: your life out, or you're going to cling to it
- 18:40Speaker 2: as a crutch and be that person that's just a
- 18:43Speaker 2: victim forever. And I wasn't about to be a victim.
- 18:48Speaker 1: If he had not taken his own life, Anthony Orbit
- 18:51Speaker 1: would have spent the rest of it behind bars. The
- 18:53Speaker 1: judge in the case revealed who was planning to sentence
- 18:56Speaker 1: him to eighty two years of life in prison, followed
- 18:59Speaker 1: by a ninety five years sentence
