- 1:32SPEAKER_07: First Choice Realty Pros, Lisa Miller, Olivia Emmons.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: And where are we today?
- 1:37SPEAKER_07: Lions Carnival! We're at the Lions Carnival.
- 1:39SPEAKER_07: This is a huge tradition.
- 1:41SPEAKER_07: We have the president of the Lions Club with us, okay?
- 1:44SPEAKER_07: Jessica Barkley.
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: She's very busy.
- 1:46SPEAKER_07: She also does you're in charge of marketing at our wonderful hospital?
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: Chief Nursing Officer.
- 1:51SPEAKER_07: Oh my God.
- 1:52SPEAKER_07: Chief Nursing.
- 1:53SPEAKER_07: The chief chief.
- 1:54SPEAKER_07: She's the chief, even busier than this, okay?
- 1:56SPEAKER_07: Even busier in marketing.
- 1:57SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_07: So, anyway, we want to tell you guys why Carlinville is so special and why they do these wonderful events that has been going on for decades and decades and decades.
- 2:09SPEAKER_07: So we want to bring it back to living here.
- 2:12SPEAKER_07: So I'm going to let Lisa take over of why the Lions Carnival kind of goes along with why you would want to move here.
- 2:18SPEAKER_06: Because it's one of the traditions that people look forward to.
- 2:23SPEAKER_06: And it is one of the cheapest things that you can do in Carlinville and entertain your kids.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: It is the greatest.
- 2:32SPEAKER_06: For 20 bucks, you can bring your whole family and have a mountain of tickets.
- 2:36SPEAKER_06: And they can ride the wagons.
- 2:39SPEAKER_06: They can ride the Bronco.
- 2:41SPEAKER_06: Is it the Bronco horse or something like that?
- 2:44SPEAKER_06: They can ride the fire truck.
- 2:46SPEAKER_06: They can ride so many things.
- 2:49SPEAKER_06: And hey, for moms and dads, they come down here and they can play bingo, do the the cake bingo, they can this bingo.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: We're sitting at the bacon table.
- 2:59SPEAKER_07: Yes, and this is such a nostalgic thing.
- 3:02SPEAKER_07: This is why I wanted to give everybody.
- 3:03SPEAKER_07: I know we just have some listeners on that are listening, so you're not seeing, but we we encourage you to go to our Facebook page so that you can see the backdrop and how like small town nostalgic this is.
- 3:14SPEAKER_07: So let's start with our first questions.
- 3:16SPEAKER_07: Hey, Jessica.
- 3:17SPEAKER_06: First, they're setting up for the fish.
- 3:18SPEAKER_06: The fish fry is tonight.
- 3:20SPEAKER_06: So please don't forget that.
- 3:22SPEAKER_06: That's what I'm coming for.
- 3:23SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 3:23SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 3:24SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: Go ahead, Lydia.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: When buyers are looking to move, they aren't just looking at bedrooms, bathrooms, yards, all that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_04: They're looking at the community and what communities have to offer, what different types of events for their kids to go to, families, anything around.
- 3:38SPEAKER_06: So what's your favorite part, Jessica, of the Lions Carnival?
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: My favorite part of the Lions Carnival is watching everybody come together and put this on and just the magic of the two nights that it's going on.
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: What made?
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: Right, not just one thing.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: What made you want to be the president?
- 3:57SPEAKER_05: Arm twisting?
- 3:58SPEAKER_05: No, I'm kidding.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: I wondered.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: I wondered.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: You know, the Lions Club, we we all kind of take our turn.
- 4:06SPEAKER_05: And I've been a lion for about four years and felt, you know, it was my turn to step up.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: Um, some of the other lions had all taken their turns.
- 4:14SPEAKER_05: So I kind of stepped in and, you know, but it really takes the whole club to pull this off.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: We have so many volunteers at work for months in preparing.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: This week is very heavy to prepare, and so much of the community steps up and helps us.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: It's not just the club.
- 4:30SPEAKER_05: We rely on businesses, um, volunteers.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: I picked up cakes from the school today, the Girl Scouts.
- 4:35SPEAKER_05: It's just amazing to see the community come together.
- 4:38SPEAKER_06: And it's a major shutdown of East Bank.
- 4:41SPEAKER_06: Oh, absolutely.
- 4:43SPEAKER_06: To get this done.
- 4:45SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: You know, we meet with the city, they help us out.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: I know the local police have to help us with parking.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: It is a major endeavor, but it is so special being downtown.
- 4:56SPEAKER_06: Forty years ago, I worked for Rogers True Value, and Marty Rogers was a big part of this, and MJ Rogers and Mary Ellen Rogers and all of the Rogers family.
- 5:06SPEAKER_06: And I remember them coming down here and putting up all the lights and putting up the kitty car, you know, machine.
- 5:12SPEAKER_06: So all of that was just, I I love to just think about the past history of Lions Carnival.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Speaking of why everyone loves the cakewalk, I mean, all the games, the rides, all of that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: What happens with the funds?
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: What do you guys do with those to put back into the community?
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Good one.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: Good one.
- 5:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so obviously the Lions support hearing and vision loss.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: So we have some national endeavors that we support with that with camps, leader dog programs that help with um individuals to learn to use their canes and those types of things.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: But most of our funds stay here in the community.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: We support so many fundraisers.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: People come and they'll speak to the lions and you know, the local park, you know, that renovation.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: The Lions did a significant donation to that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: We have ongoing things that we do every single year that we support from 4-H to ball fields to your you know, boosters clubs.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Um, MCDD is a big thing that we support.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: They support us with their cakes and um we support them.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: So most of the funds stay here locally in Carlinville.
- 6:15SPEAKER_07: I'm glad to know that because honestly, I wasn't aware that the Lions was involved in all that you just listed, Jess.
- 6:21SPEAKER_07: So I'm glad to know that and I'm glad our listeners can know that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_07: And hopefully that this can be a club that continues to be as strong as it is for generation after generation.
- 6:30SPEAKER_07: So, how can people get involved and what can they expect if they get involved as far as like time commitment?
- 6:36SPEAKER_07: For the the Lions, we meet twice a month.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: You know, and we're a social club and we serve, that's our motto, and we serve our community.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: So there's it just depends on how much you want to be involved.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: Some individuals help with the food pantry, we do recycling, just different things through the year.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: And then our our big fundraiser is this.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: If you don't want to be a lion, come support the carnival.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Absolutely support our queens.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: Those girls are a tradition.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Um, they are a staple in town.
- 7:06SPEAKER_05: Um, they have so much energy and they work their tails off.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: They really do.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Selling those tickets, and that is one of the biggest fundraising pieces of the carnival because it is cheap to come and celebrate.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: It is.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: Those queens make a lot of money that go back to the community.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: So it's not just money just going, we don't know where it's going back into the community and hours.
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: Helping families that can't afford eyeglasses and just different things.
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: And so that is so good.
- 7:34SPEAKER_06: And so when people can contribute to something like that, they're willing to open up their wallets and buy those queen tickets every second.
- 7:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_07: And you know, not only is that a great fundraiser for you, but I feel like you're helping those girls, the queens, like they have to have confidence and be outgoing and be able to articulate to people they've never met before and try to sell your belief, you know, your mission.
- 7:59SPEAKER_07: So I think think of you helping them.
- 8:01SPEAKER_07: And for our audience listening and mostly watching, you can see in the background the beautiful queen's chair that we'll be sat in tomorrow night.
- 8:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Now, who was the who's the reigning queen?
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Riley Owsley is our current reigning queen.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: She did a record breaking year last year.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: Right ago.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: And she is gonna make it back from Yale.
- 8:23SPEAKER_05: So help crown the new queen tomorrow night.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: See, look amazing.
- 8:30SPEAKER_06: You pick just class A individual.
- 8:32SPEAKER_06: So this is just one of the reasons why someone looking to, you know, what community should I buy a house in?
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: Here it is.
- 8:41SPEAKER_06: Carlinville is the community that gives back to the community.
- 8:45SPEAKER_06: So this is where I would think that most buyers would want to be looking at to to purchase a home.
- 8:51SPEAKER_07: A hundred percent.
- 8:52SPEAKER_07: Like these streets will be absolutely packed in a couple hours.
- 8:57SPEAKER_07: Oh wow.
- 8:58SPEAKER_07: So when you guys, when some of you, when you listeners are listening to this um online, you know, the Lions carnival will be over, but the impact will never be over.
- 9:07SPEAKER_06: No.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: Right?
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: No.
- 9:09SPEAKER_07: So You know, every kid at at home is saying, the carnival's denied.
- 9:13SPEAKER_07: Oh, I got told that yesterday.
- 9:14SPEAKER_07: Uh hey, mom, the Lions carnival is tomorrow.
- 9:16SPEAKER_07: And I said, I know, I know that's right.
- 9:18SPEAKER_07: Now tell us about the shirt, okay?
- 9:20SPEAKER_07: Tell they can order the shirt still.
- 9:22SPEAKER_07: What's the coolest shirt ever?
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Um Cubby Hole, our partners for the t-shirts, have reopened the store.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: Um, so the links on the um Lions Club Facebook page.
- 9:32SPEAKER_05: And you can order until Tuesday.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: And this year we are celebrating the very famous cake stand.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: I it's I love it, which will be very popular.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: So, about how many cakes do you have back there?
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: Oh goodness.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: Those are like 300.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, probably 400.
- 9:48SPEAKER_07: Oh my gosh.
- 9:50unknown: Yeah.
- 9:50SPEAKER_07: So, like people, I I want to go back to that because the cake stand really, I know we love the kids love the rides, but the adults come for the cake stand.
- 9:58SPEAKER_07: Maybe the kids too.
- 9:59SPEAKER_07: I mean, I love the cake.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: I make my kids stand there with me while I'm doing it.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: So if I get them involved, it's like very corner there.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: Put it there.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's thrilling, right?
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: It's thrilling.
- 10:06SPEAKER_05: When you get to go back to your car with cakes, yes, yeah, yeah.
- 10:10SPEAKER_05: So who makes them?
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: Um I know you said so.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: We get them, some of the lions, you know, we're responsible for bringing so many cakes.
- 10:16SPEAKER_05: MCDD traditionally helps us.
- 10:18SPEAKER_05: Girl Scouts help us um this year, the foods program at the high school, and then we just have community members that will bring in their kids.
- 10:25SPEAKER_05: I wondered.
- 10:26SPEAKER_07: I figured there was some good bakers.
- 10:28SPEAKER_07: Well, I love this.
- 10:29SPEAKER_07: I'm so excited.
- 10:31SPEAKER_07: So, what about your kids?
- 10:33SPEAKER_07: Uh now, one of them just got married.
- 10:35SPEAKER_07: So he is he will he be coming?
- 10:37SPEAKER_05: Well, he's about to pick up some food at Walmart to help support the fish stand.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: Okay, good job.
- 10:42SPEAKER_05: Well, and you know, so many people come back to town.
- 10:46SPEAKER_05: They do for the lion scrum.
- 10:48SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 10:49SPEAKER_05: It is like our homecoming, and it's a tradition when we were setting up this morning.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: We had some ladies walking by and they're like, we haven't been here since 1980, and that's the last time we've had some lion's crumbs.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: So some traditions will be the same.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: This is our 82nd year.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: Some rides have changed, but a lot of it and the nostalgia is very much the same.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 11:08SPEAKER_06: Well, and you're walking through, you walk two steps.
- 11:10SPEAKER_06: Hi, how are you?
- 11:11SPEAKER_06: I haven't seen you in such a long time.
- 11:13SPEAKER_06: Two steps.
- 11:14SPEAKER_07: I told you how are you?
- 11:15SPEAKER_07: It is, it is absolutely but you know, like your friends from high school you haven't seen in a while, they'll come back and bring their kids.
- 11:20SPEAKER_07: And Jess, I know you've got two other kids.
- 11:22SPEAKER_07: I'm sure they'll be running around tonight.
- 11:24SPEAKER_07: Um, Lydia's kids will be running around.
- 11:26SPEAKER_07: They will.
- 11:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_06: My grandkids will be around.
- 11:28SPEAKER_06: My kids will be running around.
- 11:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 11:30SPEAKER_07: And yeah, I actually lost.
- 11:32SPEAKER_07: And this again, this is not the Lions Carnival's fault.
- 11:35SPEAKER_07: This is a just a fun story.
- 11:36SPEAKER_07: Cal, my nine-year-old, this was last year.
- 11:39SPEAKER_07: Okay, it's a funny story.
- 11:40SPEAKER_07: He's he's, you know, I I said, You you go around, you stay on this street.
- 11:44SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 11:45SPEAKER_07: Did he stay on the street?
- 11:47SPEAKER_07: No, he didn't.
- 11:47SPEAKER_07: He began to go around the square.
- 11:50SPEAKER_07: Next thing I know, my phone's ringing.
- 11:51SPEAKER_07: Well, it was a police officer.
- 11:53SPEAKER_07: He went to the police.
- 11:54SPEAKER_07: He said, I can't find my mom.
- 11:57SPEAKER_07: But see, they had my number.
- 11:58SPEAKER_07: But that's a small town for you at the Lions Carnival.
- 12:01SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 12:02SPEAKER_07: You can feel safe here.
- 12:03SPEAKER_07: You can feel great in Carnivalville.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Jess, thank you so much for sitting down with us.
- 12:07SPEAKER_07: We know you're so busy.
- 12:09SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 12:09SPEAKER_07: You did a great job.
