Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 261. Morph: Comics VS. TV Series
Transcript
- 0:09Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all nerds in between.
- 0:12My name is Megan and I'm here with a character breakdown.
- 0:15But it's actually kind of like 2 character breakdowns because
- 0:18we're going to talk about Morph. And I feel like not enough
- 0:20people talk about Morph just because his his background isn't
- 0:25exactly that of the other Marvel characters because he actually
- 0:31appeared in the X-Men animated series before the comics.
- 0:34So I think why don't we go through talk about his TV
- 0:37version and then talk about the comic version and I will tell
- 0:42you the difference between the two and maybe you'll learn
- 0:44something from this. Now, before I get started, I
- 0:47know Morph is non binary and goes by they them in X-Men 97.
- 0:52But in the comics, Kevin Sidney AKA Morph uses he him pronouns.
- 0:57So don't assume I don't didn't take this into consideration.
- 1:00I'm all for the hers hymns, theys and thems.
- 1:03So when we discuss the TV version, they them comic version
- 1:07he him. So the TV version of Morph First
- 1:11Morph was actually created for the show First.
- 1:13Before ever appearing in the comics, Morph was one of the X
- 1:16men's resident chaos gremlins. Funny, sarcastic, constantly
- 1:20cracking jokes, and generally treating life threatening
- 1:24situations like an open mic night.
- 1:26Wolverine once described them as the only one who could ever make
- 1:30me laugh, which is basically the highest compliment Logan is
- 1:33capable of giving without spontaneously combusting from
- 1:35emotional vulnerability. As a result, Morph and Wolverine
- 1:40were incredibly close, arguably closer than Logan was with
- 1:44anyone else on the team. Maybe Jean Grey was a close
- 1:47second. Unfortunately, Moore's career as
- 1:50the team's Comic Relief hit a major speed bump during the X
- 1:53Men's first encounter with the Sentinels during the raid on the
- 1:57Mutant Control Agency headquarters, Morph was
- 1:59seemingly killed when the team was forced into a desperate
- 2:02retreat. Needless to say, everyone took
- 2:05it very badly. The loss devastated the X-Men
- 2:09and drove a massive wedge between Wolverine and Cyclops.
- 2:13Scott had been forced to make the brutal call to leave Morphin
- 2:17Beast behind during the retreat, and Logan was not exactly in a
- 2:20forgiving mood after. If looks could kill, Cyclops
- 2:24would have needed a second funeral, but because this is
- 2:28comic book adjacent X-Men storytelling, dead turned out to
- 2:32be more of a temporary inconvenience.
- 2:35Morph eventually resurfaced as an agent of Mr. Sinister,
- 2:39carrying a mountain of resentment toward the X-Men for
- 2:42leaving them behind. Under Sinister's influence, they
- 2:45became a walking revenge tour. First, Morph disguised themself
- 2:50as a priest and performed a fake wedding ceremony for Cyclops and
- 2:53Jean Grey, because apparently identity theft and emotional
- 2:57terrorism were now on the menu. The happy couple was then lured
- 3:01to a remote island for their honeymoon, where Sinister and
- 3:04the Nasty Boys were waiting to ambush them.
- 3:07As you know, normal honeymoon activities.
- 3:12At the same time, Morph was busy causing problems everywhere
- 3:15else. They sent Jubilee straight into
- 3:18the headquarters of the Friends of Humanity, manipulated Gambit
- 3:21into kissing Rogue right before an important mission which went
- 3:24about as well as you can expect, and perhaps most impressively,
- 3:28tricked Professor Xavier and Magneto into traveling to
- 3:33Antarctica, which was diabolical and so funny.
- 3:37I think this ended very badly for Magneto, though.
- 3:41Morph's actions ultimately led to Magneto being stripped of his
- 3:45powers and stranded in the Savage Land for most of Season
- 3:482, which is pretty wild achievement for someone whose
- 3:52primary skill set is beat literally anyone.
- 3:56However, eventually the truth came out.
- 3:59The angry, vengeful version of Morph wasn't really the person
- 4:02their friends remembered. Mr. Sinister had essentially
- 4:05planted a darker personality inside them as a means of
- 4:09control. The real Morph was still in
- 4:11there somewhere, buried under layers of trauma, manipulation,
- 4:15and enough psychological damage to keep several therapists
- 4:19employed for life. In the end, More fought back
- 4:22against their darker side and came to the aid of the X-Men.
- 4:26They helped Cyclops during the final showdown against Sinister
- 4:29in the Savage Land and prove that deep down they were still
- 4:32the same friend the team had lost.
- 4:34Afterward, Morph was sent out to Muir Island for treatment and
- 4:37recovery. Myra Mctaggart's professional
- 4:41medical opinion was basically please do not go back into
- 4:44combat right now. Morph's opinion was basically
- 4:48counterpoint, What if I did? Eventually, they insisted on
- 4:52returning to the X-Men, despite Myra's strenuous objections.
- 4:57Unfortunately, their first mission back involved the
- 4:59Sentinels again, because apparently the universe
- 5:03occasionally enjoys a practical joke.
- 5:06Facing the machines that had nearly killed them left Morph
- 5:09completely terrified. For perhaps the first time, the
- 5:12team's resident wisecracker couldn't joke their way out of
- 5:15what they were feeling. But over time, Morph confronted
- 5:18that fear head on. Not only did they manage to
- 5:21fight through it, they also helped destroy what remained of
- 5:24Master Mold. After the mission, however,
- 5:27Morph decided to step away from the X-Men once more.
- 5:30They felt they weren't ready to fully embrace being a hero
- 5:33again. And honestly, after everything
- 5:35they've been through, that was pretty reasonable assessment.
- 5:39Later, Morph was called back into action when Professor
- 5:42Xavier was shot by Henry Peter Guy Rich.
- 5:46Using their shape shifting abilities, Morph impersonated
- 5:48Xavier and reached out to mutants across the world.
- 5:52They urged everyone not to retaliate against all of
- 5:54humanity because of the actions of 1 hateful extremist.
- 5:58Basically, they prevented a global mutant fueled rage spiral
- 6:02by pretending to be the world's most famous bald man.
- 6:06By the end of the series, Morph was shown standing alongside
- 6:10Magneto and the rest of the X-Men, strongly implying that
- 6:13they had fully rejoined the team following Xavier's departure.
- 6:17One year later, that was officially the case.
- 6:19Well, one year for the show. For us, it was like 30 years.
- 6:24So great. Morph was completely
- 6:29reintegrated into the X-Men and was back in action.
- 6:32They helped rescue Roberto Dacosta, who is Sunspot, took
- 6:35down Bolivar Trask's latest master mold project and were
- 6:39present with Magneto arrived to claim Xavier's assets before
- 6:43being put on trial and eventually pardoned by the
- 6:46United Nations. Around this time, Morph also
- 6:50began identifying as non binary, even though it's not actually
- 6:53said in the show. It was good Lord, it was such a
- 6:57big deal and it's it's not a big out of all characters.
- 7:03Wouldn't morph be non binary? And it was it wasn't even like a
- 7:08huge thing. It was just in a character
- 7:10description online and though everyone lost their minds.
- 7:16You guys are bananas for that. Also like I'll never forget
- 7:20that. That was insane.
- 7:22It's never said in the show. Morph is referred to as they by
- 7:26Rogue though, which I thought was really nice.
- 7:30They altered their default appearance using their shape
- 7:32shifting powers, adopting the now iconic chalk white
- 7:36featureless face that many fans recognized from later in the
- 7:40comics. It was a fitting evolution for
- 7:42someone whose entire life had been defined by transformation.
- 7:46After all, most people spend their whole lives figuring out
- 7:49who they are. Morph had to figure it out while
- 7:51being dead, brainwashed, impersonating priests,
- 7:54traumatizing super villains, saving the world, and
- 7:56occasionally turning into other people for fun.
- 8:02Personally, I think they handled it pretty well.
- 8:04I would also like to add that Morph in the show was a last
- 8:07minute add to the show. Morph's existence is basically
- 8:10the result of a production team looking at a script and saying,
- 8:13oh wait, maybe we should not do that.
- 8:16Originally, the character who was supposed to fill Morph's
- 8:18role in X-Men the Enemy series was Thunderbird from the comics.
- 8:22The problem was that the writers realized introducing a Native
- 8:25American hero only to immediately take him out in his
- 8:29first appearance was probably not the best idea, so they
- 8:33pivoted at the last minute and created Morph instead, loosely
- 8:36inspired by the comic character Changeling.
- 8:40When I say last minute, I mean very last minute.
- 8:43Morph was never intended to become a fan favorite.
- 8:46He was basically designed to show up, die, traumatize the
- 8:49X-Men, and leave. Because of that, they gave him a
- 8:51fairly generic look. Why spend months perfecting a
- 8:55design for a character who's supposed to be gone by episode
- 8:582? Meanwhile, poor Thunderbird got
- 9:02caught in the middle of all this.
- 9:04Remember when I said it was a very last minute decision?
- 9:07His cartoon design had already been completed before the switch
- 9:10happened. Rather than waste the whole
- 9:12design, the animators tossed him into the opening credits as one
- 9:16of Magneto's random evil mutants getting punched around.
- 9:19He's basically standing there like I was supposed to have a
- 9:22job. Then comic books got involved
- 9:25because comic books always get involved.
- 9:27Around the same time, Marvel was publishing the massive Age of
- 9:30Apocalypse storyline, an alternate reality where Xavier
- 9:33dies and Magneto ends up be leading the X-Men.
- 9:37The writers liked the cartoons Morph enough that they decided
- 9:41to bring the character into the comics.
- 9:43But since comic books can't leave anything simple, they gave
- 9:46Morph a much more distinctive appearance.
- 9:49Instead of looking like a regular guy, his natural form
- 9:53became a pale, featureless face that with almost no defining
- 9:57characteristics. It was weird, it was memorable,
- 10:00and instantly was more unique than generic guy who dies.
- 10:04A few years later, Marvel doubled down on the idea.
- 10:07Another version of Morph, using the same white face design,
- 10:10became one of the main characters in Exiles, a comic
- 10:13about mutants from different realities hopping between
- 10:16dimensions and trying to fix timelines.
- 10:18Basically, if Marvel's multiverse had a customer
- 10:21service department, the Exiles worked there.
- 10:24By the time X-Men 97 rolled around decades later, the comic
- 10:28book version of Morph had become far more recognizable than the
- 10:32generic original cartoon design. The white faced look had
- 10:36appeared in multiple comics and had become strongly associated
- 10:40with the character. So the revival series adopted
- 10:42that version. And let's be real, it's just a
- 10:45lot more visually interesting than the one guy everyone
- 10:49forgets until they die. So since Morphs natural form is
- 10:53already pretty androgynous and intentionally lacks strong
- 10:55gendered features, the creators also use that opportunity to
- 10:59establish Morph as non binary. In X-Men 97, it fit naturally
- 11:03with the character shape shifting abilities and more
- 11:06gender neutral design that had been around in the comics for
- 11:10years. Adding another layer of
- 11:12coincidence, Morph's current voice actor also identifies as
- 11:16non binary. Whether the casting happened
- 11:18before or after the decision to make Morph make it known that
- 11:22Morph is non binary hasn't been made entirely clear, but it
- 11:26ended up working pretty well. And JP Carlyac is a natural fit
- 11:31for Morph. So in a strange way, Morph's
- 11:34entire story comes from a chain of happy accidents.
- 11:38Thunderbird was supposed to die. The writers changed their mind.
- 11:41They invented Morph. Morph was supposed to disappear
- 11:44immediately. Fans love Morph.
- 11:46The comics borrowed Morph. The comics made Morph cooler.
- 11:50The revival borrowed that version.
- 11:52So a lot of happy accidents. And now the character who was
- 11:56originally created as a disposable replacement has
- 11:59become one of the most recognizable characters of the
- 12:02animated X-Men roster. Not bad for someone who is
- 12:05basically hired to die. Now that's our version of Morph
- 12:09on the TV series, and that is the story behind Morph.
- 12:12Let's talk about Morph. In the comics, before he was
- 12:15Morph, before he was the lovable goofball, before he became
- 12:18Marvel's patron St. of Identity Crisis, very little was known
- 12:22about the mutant called Changeling.
- 12:24At some point, he joined the villainous organization Factor
- 12:273, where he worked as a second in command to the mysterious
- 12:31mutant master. Like many comic book hench men,
- 12:35Changeling apparently hadn't yet learned the valuable lesson that
- 12:39anyone calling themselves masters probably hiding
- 12:41something terrible. Factor 3's fancy mutant
- 12:44detecting technology identified Sean Cassidy as an incredibly
- 12:48powerful mutant, so Changeling reached out and invited him to
- 12:51join the organization. Sean's response was essentially
- 12:55absolutely not. He was horrified by Factor 3's
- 12:59goals and refused outright. Factor Three, however, wasn't
- 13:02big on accepting rejection. Since Sean's powers and law
- 13:06enforcement experience were considered too useful to waste,
- 13:10they kidnapped him instead. Problem solved.
- 13:14The organization slapped an explosive headband on Sean,
- 13:17forced him into service, and turned him into their unwilling
- 13:20operative, Banshee. While carrying out a mission in
- 13:23New York, Banshee ran into the original X-Men.
- 13:27They managed to capture both him and a Factor 3 member named
- 13:31Ogre. Professor Xavier used a psychic
- 13:34trick to disable the explosive headband before it could turn
- 13:37Shawn's head into a cautionary tale, and once freed, Banshee
- 13:40spilled the tea on everything he knew about Factor 3.
- 13:44Then came the plot twist. Changeling discovered that the
- 13:47Mutant Master wasn't actually a mutant mastermind at all, but an
- 13:52alien planning to wipe out all of life on Earth.
- 13:55Realizing that he had accidentally signed up for Team
- 13:58Planetary Extinction, Changeling promptly betrayed his boss and
- 14:03helped bring Factor 3 down. Not long afterward, Changeling
- 14:07approached Professor Xavier with some devastating news.
- 14:10He was dying of terminal cancer and only had a few months left
- 14:14to live. Meanwhile, Xavier had a secret
- 14:17of his own. An alien race called the Xenox
- 14:20was preparing to invade Earth, and he needed to disappear
- 14:23underground to prepare for it. Since explaining this to the
- 14:27X-Men would have apparently been too simple, Xavier instead came
- 14:31up with one of the weirdest plans of his career.
- 14:33He asked Changeling to pretend to be him, and somehow
- 14:36Changeling agreed. Xavier gave him a portion of his
- 14:40telepathic powers, and that shapeshifter successfully
- 14:43masqueraded as Professor X while the real Xavier worked in
- 14:46secret. The only person who knew the
- 14:48truth was Jean Grey, who was sworn to secrecy.
- 14:52Then things got tragic and weird.
- 14:55While posing as Xavier, Changeling was killed battling
- 14:58the alien grotesque. The X-Men mourned what they
- 15:02believed was the death of their mentor and buried Changeling
- 15:05while he was still wearing Xavier's face.
- 15:07Imagine having your own funeral because you died and everyone
- 15:11thinks you're someone else and is mourning someone else, and no
- 15:14one mourned you. The truth didn't come out until
- 15:16much later during the fight against the Xenox, when the
- 15:20X-Men learned that the person who had died wasn't Xavier at
- 15:22all. It had been Changeling making
- 15:24the ultimate sacrifice years later, because comic books never
- 15:28let anyone stay dead, the voodoo master Black Talon resurrected
- 15:32Changeling as a zombie. Talon grouped him with a bunch
- 15:35of undead mutants, called the Ex, hummed, and sent them to
- 15:38fight She Hulk. Even as a zombie, Changeling
- 15:40still had standards. Rather than blindly obey Black
- 15:44Talon, he resisted the mind control and refused to let his
- 15:49heroic sacrifice be turned into a punchline.
- 15:52And one of the strangest moments of his career.
- 15:55He transformed into Elvis Presley to distract She Hulk at
- 15:58a critical moment. Yes, zombies, Elvis was somehow
- 16:03part of the plan. Black Talon was very unimpressed
- 16:06by this this display of independent thinking and sent
- 16:10changing right back to the grave.
- 16:12Eventually, the mutant nation of Krakoa resurrected him properly
- 16:16through the Resurrection protocols.
- 16:18Unfortunately, death, resurrection, and the decades of
- 16:22complicated history left him with a serious identity problem.
- 16:26Part of him was still changeling the darker, more cynical former
- 16:30terrorist. The other part was morph the
- 16:33lighter, funnier, wisecracking personality most people know
- 16:36today. Instead of choosing one, his
- 16:39brain basically said why not both?
- 16:42After Cocoa fell, Morph wandered the world, bouncing between
- 16:46personalities. Some days he acted like a hero
- 16:49helping people, other days he drifted back towards
- 16:51supervillain behavior. It was less finding yourself and
- 16:56more arguing with yourself. Things came to a head when Morph
- 17:01showed up at the United States disguised as a guard at Fort
- 17:04Knox. Under the influence of his
- 17:06changeling persona, he infiltrated the facility and
- 17:09started broadcasting plans online about funding mutant
- 17:12terrorism, exposing prison systems, and proving mutant
- 17:16superiority. As public relations strategies
- 17:20go, it needed work. Banshee and his X-Men tracked
- 17:25him down and confronted him during the fight.
- 17:28Morph's lighter personality resurfaced, and Sean cautiously
- 17:31decided not to throw him into a cell immediately.
- 17:34Instead, he brought Morph back to Cassidy Keep in Ireland.
- 17:38There, Morph began bonding with Husk, Skin and Gateway while
- 17:42trying to figure out which version of himself was actually
- 17:45in charge. The piece didn't last long.
- 17:48After seeing a news report about a mysterious break in in the
- 17:51British seaside resort of Ferry Side on Sea, Morph immediately
- 17:55volunteered to join Banshee's X-Men on the investigation.
- 17:58And that's really that. Like, that's all I could.
- 18:02I haven't seen him since, so where are you at?
- 18:09But if I may say, if there's one thing more reliable than mutant
- 18:12drama, it's a shapeshifter with unresolved personality issues
- 18:16voluntarily walking into more mutant drama, which is what
- 18:19Morph does. And that is the last time I saw
- 18:21Morph, and he was doing just that.
- 18:24So that is Morph, that is Kevin Sidney, that is Changeling.
- 18:30It's all a very confusing thing just because he wasn't a thing
- 18:35until the show. And then the comics were like,
- 18:39you know what? I like that.
- 18:40I want one and they took him, which I'm not mad at.
- 18:44It's just like, I feel like you guys should just kind of figure
- 18:48it out, you know, and and bring Morph back.
- 18:51I want to see Morph in the comics.
- 18:52I love Morph in X-Men 97, but I want to see more of Morph in the
- 18:57comics. That's all I'm asking.
- 18:59I don't ask much of Marvel. That's it.
- 19:02So that is Morph. I hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 19:05I do not know how long this episode's going to be, so I
- 19:08really hope you enjoy it because it feels like a long one and it
- 19:14feels like a lot of editing my way so.
