- 0:23Speaker 2: yea on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Jean is jep Legwold time here on a Super Bowl
- 0:34Speaker 3: Friday afternoon. Jeff Legwald joins us here courtesy of the
- 0:39Speaker 3: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start
- 0:43Speaker 3: with a job and with a career. Uh, Jeff, Let's
- 0:48Speaker 3: start with Patrick Certain. Now that it's official he is
- 0:51Speaker 3: the defensive player of the year. One day when Jeff
- 0:56Speaker 3: Legwald writes his book and hell you could be you
- 0:59Speaker 3: could be the the Patrick Certain biographer. How are you
- 1:02Speaker 3: going to tell the story of the twenty twenty four season,
- 1:05Speaker 3: the magical twenty twenty four season for PS two.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I think it's and we've we've talked
- 1:11Speaker 4: about this before. I think this is where, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 4: analytics has opened a whole world of things for people
- 1:20Speaker 4: to see. You know, maybe Champ Bailey wins this award,
- 1:25Speaker 4: you know, the year he has ten interceptions, if these
- 1:29Speaker 4: metrics exist, but he I don't know anyone in the
- 1:33Speaker 4: league who would dispute the award in any way. I
- 1:36Speaker 4: mean they I hear people say, yeah, I'd also consider,
- 1:41Speaker 4: you know, Miles Garrett or I'd also consider and you know,
- 1:45Speaker 4: they'll name a couple other people, but nobody disputes this.
- 1:48Speaker 4: He you know, whether we can always tell snap the
- 1:52Speaker 4: snap at a corner if the guy is one of
- 1:56Speaker 4: the best players in the league. But he is absolutely
- 1:59Speaker 4: one of the best in the league, and it's you know,
- 2:03Speaker 4: you would hope he could be a guy that in
- 2:06Speaker 4: this day and age, could you know, play his whole
- 2:09Speaker 4: career here and we see what it becomes from here.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I think he's just getting started if he stays healthy. Frankly,
- 2:16Speaker 4: all right, what do.
- 2:17Speaker 5: You think of the MVP thing? A lot of people
- 2:19Speaker 5: up in arms about that. I don't have a problem
- 2:22Speaker 5: with Josh Allen getting the MVP, but how did you
- 2:25Speaker 5: fall on it with Lamar being the you know, first
- 2:28Speaker 5: team All Pro QB.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, I don't think there's a wrong
- 2:32Speaker 4: answer necessarily, but I I hate, I really detest the
- 2:37Speaker 4: idea of voter fatigue. If people really did it because
- 2:41Speaker 4: of that, I would I would be immenseally disappointed in
- 2:45Speaker 4: people who would do that. You know, you vote to vote,
- 2:49Speaker 4: and that's it. I mean, Lamar DIDs something no one's
- 2:51Speaker 4: ever done in the history of the league. So if
- 2:56Speaker 4: I was still voting, you know, I spent twenty five
- 2:59Speaker 4: years voting on that panel, and I by was still voting,
- 3:03Speaker 4: I would have given my vote to Lamar.
- 3:06Speaker 3: You know, it's And again we had Lindsay Jones on
- 3:08Speaker 3: the show earlier. Jeff and I know you guys are
- 3:11Speaker 3: longtime colleagues, and I know you have a great deal
- 3:14Speaker 3: of respect for and she split her vote, and you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: and again the conversation wandered into the nuance of most
- 3:21Speaker 3: Valuable versus best Player, And again she said, Lamar's first
- 3:26Speaker 3: team All Pro quarterback and Josh Allen is the MVP.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And you know what's funny is you go back to
- 3:31Speaker 3: nineteen eighty seven when John Elway was the MVP, but
- 3:35Speaker 3: he was second team All Pro and Joe Montana was
- 3:38Speaker 3: first team All Pro. And what's funny about it? And
- 3:41Speaker 3: it sounds dumb, But Joe Montana was a better quarterback
- 3:45Speaker 3: that year, and yet John Elway, I think was more
- 3:49Speaker 3: valuable to his team that year. And so again we
- 3:52Speaker 3: just we get into the weird definition of the award,
- 3:55Speaker 3: which always has just made me wonder, why don't they
- 3:58Speaker 3: just call the award best player or something.
- 4:01Speaker 4: You know, Yeah, it's just it's one of those things,
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know. I guess again, in the nuance of voting,
- 4:09Speaker 4: if I had had a vote this year, Derrick Henry
- 4:13Speaker 4: doesn't have the season he has without Lamar. I just
- 4:16Speaker 4: don't from a football perspective. So I wouldn't penalize Lamar
- 4:23Speaker 4: because one of his teammates had a better year than
- 4:26Speaker 4: any of Josh Allen's teammates. I guess I would not
- 4:30Speaker 4: penalize Lamar for that. But you know, again, there's no
- 4:33Speaker 4: real wrong answer. I just I don't like the notion of, well,
- 4:37Speaker 4: the other guys won it, so let's let's move on.
- 4:41Speaker 4: And you know, that's how guys like Mike Shanahan and
- 4:44Speaker 4: Chuck Nole never win Coach of the Year award. That's
- 4:47Speaker 4: kind of thinking, all right.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Do you think because I asked lindsay this, I'm curious
- 4:53Speaker 5: your perspective because I said it to Nate. I do think.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I know that this year's playoff run doesn't play in
- 4:59Speaker 5: any of this voting because they vote on it the
- 5:01Speaker 5: last day of the year. But do you think when
- 5:03Speaker 5: a guy flames out earlier in the playoffs and expected
- 5:06Speaker 5: and look, Lamar made it all the way to the
- 5:08Speaker 5: AFC Championship but didn't have the game that he wanted to,
- 5:11Speaker 5: do you think voters carry that into the next year
- 5:13Speaker 5: when they make their decision. I know they're not supposed to,
- 5:16Speaker 5: but do you think they do?
- 5:18Speaker 4: Human nature is human nature, you know, and you know
- 5:21Speaker 4: I'm not sure you could use that argument. I mean,
- 5:23Speaker 4: Josh Allen's playoffs.
- 5:26Speaker 5: They both ended against mahomes at home.
- 5:30Speaker 4: They're both facing the same problem.
- 5:32Speaker 5: But Jeff, to your point, all the time, the last
- 5:34Speaker 5: team that wins, whoever loses the Super Bowl Sunday sucks
- 5:37Speaker 5: as you You're right, day somehow become the thirty second team,
- 5:41Speaker 5: not the second team. And Lamar's loss was more fresh
- 5:45Speaker 5: than the minds.
- 5:46Speaker 4: I've always said that if you lose the Super Bowl,
- 5:49Speaker 4: you don't finish second. It's just not that it doesn't
- 5:53Speaker 4: work that way no matter what. But yeah, again, I
- 5:56Speaker 4: both guys had a season worthy of the trophy. But
- 6:00Speaker 4: you know, if you're asking me how I would have voted,
- 6:02Speaker 4: That's how I would have voted, all.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Right, Jeff Eric Allen, Jared Allen, Antonio Gates, Sterling Sharp
- 6:09Speaker 3: four member Hall of Fame class. Why Why was the
- 6:13Speaker 3: number lower than usual? And was there was there any
- 6:18Speaker 3: of these particular nominees or I guess now about to
- 6:21Speaker 3: be inductees that you have particularly strong feelings about.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Well, I liked I was proponent for all four. Obviously
- 6:29Speaker 4: they'be that. But you're gonna see a lot more classes
- 6:32Speaker 4: like this moving forward to Hall has changed the voting
- 6:36Speaker 4: parameters this year, and the cut to the the cutdown
- 6:42Speaker 4: is far different now. And it used to be not
- 6:48Speaker 4: to get too deep in the weeds from a mathematical sense.
- 6:52Speaker 4: But it used to be we got to the final five,
- 6:57Speaker 4: we cut all the way down to the final five,
- 6:59Speaker 4: and then we would vote yes or no on those
- 7:02Speaker 4: five individually. And usually by the time you get to
- 7:07Speaker 4: the final five, everybody's like, this guy is a Hall
- 7:09Speaker 4: of Famer, so the vote routinely went yes. So it
- 7:13Speaker 4: was a full five member modern era portion of the class.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And then you add on the seat, you're in the
- 7:19Speaker 4: code whatever. But the five modern era slots were always filled,
- 7:25Speaker 4: usually almost always, because it was a vote of yes
- 7:29Speaker 4: or no at that point. Now they've made it, so
- 7:32Speaker 4: we cut to seven and then we each vote for five.
- 7:37Speaker 4: So mathematically that will make it far different and we
- 7:42Speaker 4: will see a lot more. I mean, there are only
- 7:44Speaker 4: three modern era players in this class. The coaching candidate
- 7:50Speaker 4: didn't make it. Only one of three seniors made it,
- 7:54Speaker 4: and the contributor didn't make it. So you're going to
- 7:57Speaker 4: see some smaller classes moving forward. And frankly is as
- 8:03Speaker 4: much as we on the committee, especially those of us
- 8:07Speaker 4: on the Senior Committee, who see the backlog of Hall
- 8:09Speaker 4: of famers who are not in the Hall of Fame,
- 8:12Speaker 4: this is only going to add to that, and it
- 8:14Speaker 4: will only add, in my opinion, to the angst of
- 8:18Speaker 4: people about how long it takes for folks to get in.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I mean, Luke Keighley was probably the cleanest in terms
- 8:26Speaker 4: of resume player we considered this year, and he didn't
- 8:31Speaker 4: make it, so you know that's that's gonna be. You know, though,
- 8:37Speaker 4: he's a guy who was a five time first team
- 8:40Speaker 4: All Pro and the list of those guys is very
- 8:43Speaker 4: short and he didn't make it. And you look at
- 8:48Speaker 4: who's coming into the pile next year, and it's only
- 8:51Speaker 4: going to get I mean, Belichick's eligible next year, Drew
- 8:54Speaker 4: Brees is eligible next year. Lay Fitzgerald's eligible next year.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So do the math whose ballot though? Right though? Though
- 9:01Speaker 1: you rubber stamp those guys, right, not anymore from what
- 9:04Speaker 1: he's saying.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I mean I don't. I think the quote
- 9:08Speaker 4: unquote rubber stamp is a lot more difficult now because
- 9:12Speaker 4: what do you do with the guys who people thought
- 9:14Speaker 4: were rubber stamps that are still on the board as
- 9:17Speaker 4: it were. But again, they've the Hall wants it to
- 9:21Speaker 4: be difficult, and they've made it more difficult. And uh,
- 9:24Speaker 4: we're gonna this was the smallest Hall of Fame class
- 9:27Speaker 4: since two thousand and five.
- 9:28Speaker 5: I believe, Jeff, I want to ask you. Is someone
- 9:30Speaker 5: that has to say, because you know, naturally we're gonna
- 9:34Speaker 5: ask you about Eli Manning and all that stuff won't
- 9:36Speaker 5: get into it. But before you answer about Eli Manning,
- 9:39Speaker 5: is there really why is there a first ballot Hall
- 9:43Speaker 5: of Famer that's so special? I guess my problem there is,
- 9:47Speaker 5: if you're a Hall of Famer. You're a Hall of Famer.
- 9:49Speaker 2: What is it?
- 9:50Speaker 5: You're a special Hall of Famer. Do you get a
- 9:51Speaker 5: double bust if it's first ballot? I mean, why is that?
- 9:55Speaker 5: Why is that held to such a such a high
- 9:58Speaker 5: honor when if you're a Hall of Famer, you're a
- 10:00Speaker 5: Hall of Famer.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess given the difficulty of the process, it's
- 10:06Speaker 4: just a sign of the respect of your career that
- 10:10Speaker 4: you navigated the most difficult process in the quickest fashion
- 10:17Speaker 4: because you were so good. But I know people, I
- 10:21Speaker 4: can tell you people on the committee think, you know,
- 10:25Speaker 4: the first ballot status. There are some people who think
- 10:29Speaker 4: the first ballot status, you know, should just be handed
- 10:32Speaker 4: out like crazy. And then there are people who think
- 10:35Speaker 4: only guys like Jim Brown should ever get it. So
- 10:39Speaker 4: you've got a real divergence of opinions. My opinion has
- 10:44Speaker 4: always been that Floyd Little's gold jacket was exactly the
- 10:48Speaker 4: same as John Elways, and it took Floyd Little, you know,
- 10:51Speaker 4: four decades longer to get his. So I guess I've
- 10:56Speaker 4: always felt like the gold jackets, the gold jacket, whenever
- 10:59Speaker 4: you get it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I like a nice double bust.
- 11:01Speaker 3: By the way, Jeff Legwall joining us here on a
- 11:03Speaker 3: Friday afternoon.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Do you look good in a gold jacket?
- 11:07Speaker 1: They've never given me one. That's that's something I'm getting
- 11:12Speaker 1: ripped off over there.
- 11:13Speaker 5: Hey, what was the real tea that used to have it? Jeff?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Do you do you remember that jacket? It was? Okay,
- 11:24Speaker 5: there you go.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Which one was the red Blazer? I can't remember? Uh, Leggy,
- 11:29Speaker 3: Let's let's dive into this match up a little bit.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Vic Fangio versus Steve spag no Lo. I don't know
- 11:36Speaker 3: if it's number one, number one, number one, but like,
- 11:38Speaker 3: you really can't do much better as a defensive coordinator
- 11:41Speaker 3: matchup than these two minds in this game, can you?
- 11:45Speaker 2: No?
- 11:46Speaker 5: And then?
- 11:46Speaker 4: And they're at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms
- 11:48Speaker 4: of aggression, yeah, you know, And that's to me that's
- 11:52Speaker 4: the intriguing part, because Vic may have to be a
- 11:56Speaker 4: tag more aggressive than he wants to be, and spag
- 11:59Speaker 4: Nola may has to be a tad more. You know,
- 12:02Speaker 4: put a spy on. H hurts from time to time,
- 12:07Speaker 4: load the line of scrimmage. You know, he may have
- 12:10Speaker 4: to do things he's uncomfortable doing too. And I think
- 12:14Speaker 4: of whoever handles their discomfort. The best will have the
- 12:20Speaker 4: best day among those two. But I think fix that.
- 12:25Speaker 4: You know, even here he had good outings against Mahomes
- 12:29Speaker 4: with the with that you know, containment approach. But I
- 12:34Speaker 4: think Mahomes, even in the in the couple of years Vixman,
- 12:40Speaker 4: I think Mahomes is much better at dealing with that
- 12:44Speaker 4: now he is far. I mean, they were at the
- 12:47Speaker 4: bottom or near the bottom of every big play metric
- 12:50Speaker 4: this year, but they kill it on third down and
- 12:53Speaker 4: he just takes whatever opening you give him in a
- 12:59Speaker 4: very respect way until he sees the chance to pounce.
- 13:03Speaker 4: And I think that's what makes it tough for Fangio.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Uh.
- 13:08Speaker 4: You know, both both teams got a little bit of
- 13:11Speaker 4: question marks in their offensive lines too, so I think
- 13:14Speaker 4: that will play into it. Who which of those teams
- 13:18Speaker 4: can sort of mend those openings the best, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 4: for and get one good evening out of the lineup
- 13:25Speaker 4: that put on the field.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what's kind of wild about this matchup here,
- 13:28Speaker 3: is like, you know, Fangio wants to play and make
- 13:31Speaker 3: Mahomes play left handed. First off, I don't know if
- 13:33Speaker 3: that's you know, humanly possible to do, but Also, the
- 13:38Speaker 3: Eagles were one of the best in the NFL and
- 13:40Speaker 3: forcing you into a short passing game, Well, the Chiefs,
- 13:43Speaker 3: that's their bread and butter, is the short passing game.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Like they'll just they'll live in that place all day long.
- 13:48Speaker 3: To your point, like there's no downfield passing attack coming
- 13:52Speaker 3: from Kansas City, which then makes me wonder And granted
- 13:55Speaker 3: we've had two weeks to think about this game, Jeff,
- 13:57Speaker 3: but that means Andy Reid and Vic Fangio have as well.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Is like, early on in this game, does Andy Reid
- 14:02Speaker 3: try and uncork something deep on a double move? Does
- 14:05Speaker 3: even Worthy or something like that to loosen things up
- 14:08Speaker 3: and catch Philly off guard? Like, how how do you
- 14:12Speaker 3: see that chess match going between Mahomes and Fangio.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I would guess even though they've they've played exceedingly well.
- 14:21Speaker 4: I would I would think Andy Ray will go after
- 14:24Speaker 4: the two rookie corners in some fashion, Cooper Degene, and
- 14:28Speaker 4: I think he will go after both of those guys.
- 14:31Speaker 4: That uh, I.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Can't believe those guys are both rookies. By the way,
- 14:34Speaker 3: Quinnon Mitchell and Cooper de Gene.
- 14:36Speaker 4: You you look at the Eagles off season editions, yes,
- 14:41Speaker 4: and I think they. I think they added through the
- 14:44Speaker 4: draft or in free agency five Pro Bowl players last offseason.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Put Howie Roseman in the Hall of Fame, Jeff.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I mean it's on. He was taking some heat for
- 14:54Speaker 4: the last couple of years, and then he he uncorked
- 14:57Speaker 4: the off season of the ages. I mean, nobody's so
- 15:00Speaker 4: what the bond the linebacker was gonna do on it?
- 15:03Speaker 4: I mean he went from role player to all thro
- 15:07Speaker 4: you know, and you just don't often see that. But
- 15:12Speaker 4: but I think Andy Reid will go after the two
- 15:14Speaker 4: rookies of Smidge and see if he can get their
- 15:16Speaker 4: eyes in the wrong place. And you know, part of
- 15:20Speaker 4: me I always and all the Super Bowls I've done
- 15:23Speaker 4: through the years, you know, more than two dozen, A
- 15:27Speaker 4: player like DeAndre Hopkins usually pops out a guy who's
- 15:31Speaker 4: waited a long time and has had a lot of ability.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Those guys seem to find a way because they just
- 15:39Speaker 4: know it might be their only shot at it, and
- 15:42Speaker 4: they they somehow make a play that means something.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Deaf Lagweld everybody like you would need your official pick.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Who who's getting it done this time? Is it Mahomes
- 15:52Speaker 3: and Reid? For the three peat or did the Eagles
- 15:55Speaker 3: pull the upside. I mean, i'd say pull the upset.
- 15:57Speaker 3: They're a point and a half dog, but it feels
- 15:59Speaker 3: bigger than that.
- 16:01Speaker 4: They're really good. I think Eagles have more talent. Yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 4: But and then if the Chiefs somehow keep Barkley from
- 16:10Speaker 4: going bananas, I think the Chiefs win a close one,
- 16:13Speaker 4: you know, a field goal or two, yeah, three or
- 16:16Speaker 4: six point went. But I just and maybe it's because
- 16:20Speaker 4: I've spent so much time looking at the AFC West. Uh,
- 16:25Speaker 4: the Eagles can't you know, It's like we say, you
- 16:27Speaker 4: can't leave it a one score game for the guy.
- 16:31Speaker 4: If they get the lead and just can run Barkley
- 16:34Speaker 4: until the game's over, that's their that's their ticket. But
- 16:39Speaker 4: if it's you know, a close game, I think Mahomes
- 16:41Speaker 4: gets it. And I just think Mahomes is too good
- 16:44Speaker 4: on that biggest stage and it'll take a herculean effort
- 16:48Speaker 4: to beat them.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Well like, and I think their defense is just comfortable
- 16:51Speaker 3: in close games. And I think there's something to be
- 16:54Speaker 3: said for that of like of like knowing well, it's
- 16:57Speaker 3: going to be twenty three to twenty one, and we
- 16:59Speaker 3: don't we don't have the option to break at any point.
- 17:03Speaker 3: But also I think Spags's group is just comfortable playing
- 17:06Speaker 3: in that spot.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yeah. And I know the Eagles have some people who
- 17:09Speaker 4: you know, who won the have won the Super Bowl.
- 17:12Speaker 4: But overall, the Chiefs as a team have answered the
- 17:19Speaker 4: biggest question elite athletes always have, how will I do
- 17:24Speaker 4: in the biggest moment? And the Chiefs already have the
- 17:27Speaker 4: answer to that.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Yep.
- 17:28Speaker 4: And that is worth something. How many points that is,
- 17:32Speaker 4: I don't know, but it is worth something, and I've
- 17:35Speaker 4: just seen it too many times to deny it.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Def leg Weld everybody, ESPN. Leggie.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Great, great job in another Hall of Fame class, smaller,
- 17:44Speaker 3: but you know what, more selective. And I appreciate that, Leggy.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Good stuff, man, Thank you, Thank care.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Fellows Enjoy
