- 1:02Speaker 2: Fun Fun Friday, and we It's not me and the
- 1:06Speaker 2: Mouse in my pocket, It's Calvin McCullough and Christine Nicholas.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Your your candid co hosts who are here on Fridays.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And when I say candid, maybe not as candid as
- 1:15Speaker 2: Calvin McCall and Linda Perillo earlier in the week. But
- 1:17Speaker 2: pretty candid. We're pretty candid, I would say, Christine, pretty
- 1:20Speaker 2: we're pretty real.
- 1:21Speaker 3: We don't hold back, and I.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Think in this day and age, it's kind of incumbent
- 1:28Speaker 2: upon us to do that too, because you know, we
- 1:31Speaker 2: just had this beautiful sale force thing happen. And on
- 1:35Speaker 2: the day that they were coming in to the Harbor,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I had this great opportunity to go down and with
- 1:43Speaker 2: Robert and Mary Carey do their travel show from the
- 1:46Speaker 2: deck of the Intrepid, and we parked right across the
- 1:50Speaker 2: street from the Intrepid. But in order to get from
- 1:54Speaker 2: where our car was to the Intrepid itself, just across
- 1:57Speaker 2: the West Side Highway, just across what is that ninth
- 1:59Speaker 2: that there are, twelfth Avenue, whatever that is, we had
- 2:04Speaker 2: to literally and we figured out a different way to
- 2:07Speaker 2: get back. But on the way over to the intreple
- 2:09Speaker 2: we had to go through one of these long sections
- 2:13Speaker 2: of like grocery carts, park next to umbrellas with just
- 2:19Speaker 2: heinous stuff all over the sidewalk, and it was like
- 2:22Speaker 2: I felt like I was in the Third World. I've
- 2:24Speaker 2: been to the Third World I've been to Haiti, I've
- 2:26Speaker 2: been to portions of Africa that have been very underdeveloped
- 2:29Speaker 2: and deeply impoverished. That was the level of grossness and poverty,
- 2:35Speaker 2: well not even poverty, just kind of sickness and unhealthiness
- 2:39Speaker 2: that I saw in these people that were there. And
- 2:42Speaker 2: they were literally across the street from the Intrepid, which
- 2:45Speaker 2: is one of the biggest attractions that we have as
- 2:49Speaker 2: a city. People come here from all over the world
- 2:50Speaker 2: to see the Intrepid and to do it. And then
- 2:52Speaker 2: for that day in particular, it was packed because everybody
- 2:55Speaker 2: wanted to see the tall ships coming in. And I
- 2:58Speaker 2: just thought, what is happening to our city?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not good. It is definitely not good for tourism, which,
- 3:05Speaker 3: as you know, I have this background in tourism, a
- 3:07Speaker 3: little soft spot for it a little bit. Yeah, And
- 3:11Speaker 3: I have said so much in the New York Post
- 3:13Speaker 3: and also with Betsy McCoy that this has a negative impact.
- 3:17Speaker 3: But you know, it's also not good for those that
- 3:20Speaker 3: are in need. Right, So you know, if you are
- 3:24Speaker 3: compassionate and you feel bad, as I'm sure you do,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and your children and my children whenever we pass a
- 3:31Speaker 3: homeless person, how The thought is, how can we help them?
- 3:36Speaker 3: Why are they on the street, Why are they now
- 3:39Speaker 3: that this is a very hot weekend. Why is the
- 3:43Speaker 3: city allowing them to sleep in their own squalor to
- 3:47Speaker 3: sit in their own filth, to spread diseases not only
- 3:52Speaker 3: amongst those that are in the encampment, but to others
- 3:54Speaker 3: that may be passing by. Why does it make sense
- 3:58Speaker 3: to allow this so that the businesses that have worked
- 4:00Speaker 3: so hard to have a brick and mortar business, which
- 4:05Speaker 3: as we know, is not an easy thing to accomplish
- 4:08Speaker 3: in New York City. Just opening a business is a success.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Why are we allowing these encampments to close down these
- 4:14Speaker 3: businesses so that? You know, why are we allowing tourists
- 4:19Speaker 3: that may want to go to the Intrepid to say,
- 4:22Speaker 3: you know what, I saw the encampment, I read about it,
- 4:24Speaker 3: I heard about it on you know, I'm not going
- 4:26Speaker 3: to go, and the Intrepid welcomes millions of visitors. Not
- 4:32Speaker 3: only is it important from a tourist important point of view,
- 4:35Speaker 3: it's important from a historic point of view for people
- 4:37Speaker 3: to be able to learn about what happened on the Intrepid.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Why is that important to our American history? The convention
- 4:44Speaker 3: center is right there, the Jacob Javits Convention Center, one
- 4:48Speaker 3: of the most important convention centers in the entire world.
- 4:52Speaker 3: They are getting set to welcome some big public shows.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Not all the shows there are are public, but Comic
- 5:01Speaker 3: Con and fan Fest is this weekend. FanFest is taking
- 5:05Speaker 3: place at Javits, which is you know, all of the
- 5:08Speaker 3: sports fans from all over. They're going to have athletes
- 5:10Speaker 3: from yeah, you know, MLB, from NBA, from soccer, They're
- 5:16Speaker 3: all going to be showing up for the fans. And
- 5:19Speaker 3: now you've got kids, families that have to basically walk
- 5:23Speaker 3: around this stench, you know, rat infested, disease prone encampment.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I mean, this is what the city needs to clean
- 5:37Speaker 3: this up. That's your job, Okay, that is the job
- 5:39Speaker 3: of the city. Well and serious may differ philosophically, but
- 5:42Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you are you are
- 5:45Speaker 3: hired for the self and welfare safety of our city.
- 5:49Speaker 3: This is a safety issue now well.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And really good mayors have done this in the past
- 5:54Speaker 2: and had it under control. I think one of the
- 5:57Speaker 2: things that your old boss did that was really distinctive
- 6:00Speaker 2: of his time in city hall was that Mayor Giuliani
- 6:04Speaker 2: just never he just never believed it was the right
- 6:07Speaker 2: thing to do to leave someone on the street in
- 6:09Speaker 2: that type of situation. And so Bernie Carrott told me,
- 6:13Speaker 2: on more than one occasion, he'd be, you know, coming
- 6:15Speaker 2: off shift two am in the morning, he'd get a
- 6:18Speaker 2: phone call from the mayor, who was, you know, coming
- 6:21Speaker 2: back from wherever and say, hey, I just saw somebody
- 6:23Speaker 2: at you know, fifty seventh and whatever, and he'd have
- 6:27Speaker 2: to go sign somebody to go deal with them and
- 6:30Speaker 2: to help them that night. But it was important. The
- 6:33Speaker 2: mayor made it important for the city to be in
- 6:36Speaker 2: good shape, and that meant helping take care of those people,
- 6:39Speaker 2: make sure that they were in the right place. But
- 6:42Speaker 2: that also then helped protect the stewardship of the streets
- 6:45Speaker 2: and everything.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Else from and it also resulted when you look at
- 6:48Speaker 3: the bottom line, it resulted in fewer homeless people. Yeah
- 6:52Speaker 3: you were homeless, You had lower regions.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And tourism, huge positives in like the reduction of crime
- 6:58Speaker 2: and other things too. I mean, if you want to,
- 7:01Speaker 2: if you want to look at the benefits that grew
- 7:03Speaker 2: out of that, I don't even know that you can
- 7:04Speaker 2: trace all of them. And attribute them fairly because there
- 7:07Speaker 2: were so many that came from it. But yeah, and
- 7:11Speaker 2: and I don't I've never understood the argument from the
- 7:14Speaker 2: build of Blasios and the Mamdanis of the world that
- 7:16Speaker 2: have said, oh, it's better for them to just live
- 7:19Speaker 2: in their filth, Like how what sociological study do they
- 7:25Speaker 2: cite when coming up with that policy.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Idea, Because I don't like, you know what, if you
- 7:28Speaker 3: believe that, then you've got a huge lawn in your
- 7:31Speaker 3: backyard at Gracy Manson. Let them go there, you know what,
- 7:34Speaker 3: Open that yard, which is in a park, which is
- 7:38Speaker 3: funded by taxpayers. Let them have an encampment there at
- 7:42Speaker 3: Gracie Mansion, and then you can see for yourself and
- 7:44Speaker 3: live among them, you know, because I'm sure there's probably
- 7:47Speaker 3: some kind of socialist guilt living in Gracy Mansion. It
- 7:50Speaker 3: kind of cut. It's got to go with the territory, right,
- 7:53Speaker 3: So then you can be amongst your your you know,
- 7:56Speaker 3: those that have said and professed how great the mayor is,
- 8:00Speaker 3: these encampment dwellers have said that they really support the
- 8:04Speaker 3: mayor for letting them sleep on the street. So those
- 8:08Speaker 3: are the people that you want. You can live among them.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I mean, just a suggestion.
- 8:12Speaker 2: What was the Occupy Wall you remember when occupied?
- 8:15Speaker 3: I remember Occupy Wall Street.
- 8:17Speaker 2: They were right next door to our station here and
- 8:20Speaker 2: it was and I had to walk through there to
- 8:22Speaker 2: get to the train every day. I was just like,
- 8:24Speaker 2: is there any other option?
- 8:25Speaker 3: Well, it wasn't until somebody was raped, even though there
- 8:29Speaker 3: was there was complaints of sexual miss bad behavior, but
- 8:35Speaker 3: they didn't And then until this woman came out raped, crying, screaming,
- 8:39Speaker 3: and they caught the guy that they said, enough is enough,
- 8:42Speaker 3: and then the police commissioner at the time brought in sanitation.
- 8:45Speaker 3: They got out the hoses, and they didn't give them
- 8:47Speaker 3: seven days. They didn't have you know, let's have a
- 8:49Speaker 3: chit chat, let's have a meeting, let's talk about this.
- 8:52Speaker 3: They're like, the hoses are opened, the water came out,
- 8:54Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, they picked up their probably
- 8:58Speaker 3: George Soros funded ten and ran for back to Greenwich,
- 9:02Speaker 3: Connecticut or wherever these kids lived. Okay, and by the way,
- 9:05Speaker 3: it was over. It was over, game over. That's all
- 9:09Speaker 3: it took.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And we could do it again if Mom Donnie had
- 9:12Speaker 2: the will to. But I don't think you guys, Okay,
- 9:14Speaker 2: coming up We've got a great show. We're going to
- 9:16Speaker 2: talk about some really fun stuff that you can do
- 9:19Speaker 2: on the water. We're going to talk about some fun
- 9:21Speaker 2: stuff that you can see in a brand new grand
- 9:23Speaker 2: opening coming soon to the Times Square area. And we
- 9:27Speaker 2: might just knock on Peter Madonia's door. We're going to
- 9:29Speaker 2: go see him in a couple of weeks to do
- 9:31Speaker 2: a broadcast from Arthur Avenue. But I think he has
- 9:33Speaker 2: some thoughts on the ethnic map that the Mayor's office
- 9:39Speaker 2: put out and what supposedly you can go see all
- 9:41Speaker 2: the ethnic highlights of New York.
- 9:44Speaker 3: City, thecla, thelay.
- 9:46Speaker 2: The odd thing about it is there's no Arthur Avenue listing.
- 9:49Speaker 3: On it, and there's no Italian enclave. Stotton Island wasn't included.
- 9:53Speaker 3: That's an Italian enclave.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That's to them. It's a Republican on cleave. That's the problem.
- 9:57Speaker 2: All right. When we come back, We've got a lot
- 9:59Speaker 2: of fun stuff stick around.
- 10:05Speaker 3: From New York.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It's Radio night Life with Kevin McCullough.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Welcome back. It is Radio night Live, the Fun Friday Edition,
- 10:16Speaker 2: that's what we call it. Christine Nicholas, Kevin mccullaugh. Glad
- 10:18Speaker 2: to have you with us and Christine. You started talking
- 10:21Speaker 2: about our next guest and all of the fun that
- 10:25Speaker 2: can be discovered at his location a couple of weeks ago.
- 10:29Speaker 2: In fact, it was right after we were on the
- 10:31Speaker 2: boat looking at the tall ships. In fact, I think
- 10:33Speaker 2: you were kind of like rage baiting my kids, like
- 10:35Speaker 2: come on, kids, I got the best place for you
- 10:38Speaker 2: to go to now, And they weren't even open yet
- 10:40Speaker 2: at the time.
- 10:40Speaker 3: So well, I think I was telling him because we
- 10:43Speaker 3: run we were taking a cruise about the tall ships.
- 10:45Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, well this is really great.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Two hundred and fifty years you know about the British invasion,
- 10:50Speaker 3: but guess what, we got a new British invasion coming
- 10:53Speaker 3: soon to Times Square and it is called House of Spells.
- 10:59Speaker 3: And with us to night first time on Radio Night
- 11:01Speaker 3: Live is Heimi Videll. Jimi is the CEO of US
- 11:05Speaker 3: operations of House of Spells. What you say is House
- 11:09Speaker 3: of Spells, Heimi. It is a newcomer to Times Square.
- 11:14Speaker 3: It's going to be opening on July twenty ninth, but
- 11:18Speaker 3: it comes from Great Britain. So tell us, himI Vidal, welcome.
- 11:22Speaker 3: First of all, thank you about House of Spells.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Well.
- 11:26Speaker 6: House of Spells is a brand that's been out there
- 11:30Speaker 6: for about ten years. It started organically as another concept store,
- 11:35Speaker 6: and as it developed over the years, they realized there
- 11:38Speaker 6: was a huge, huge demand FORATOM licensed merchandise, and little
- 11:45Speaker 6: by little we organically went into being of one hundred
- 11:49Speaker 6: percent OFTOM licensed merchandise store and created and design a
- 11:55Speaker 6: store that's more based on giving the consumers an experience
- 12:00Speaker 6: and hence our first store in Europe and UK actually,
- 12:03Speaker 6: and we've had so much success in London and Strafford
- 12:08Speaker 6: and a couple of other places. We're growing globally as well.
- 12:12Speaker 6: So it's just been a great journey for the team,
- 12:15Speaker 6: the two founders that started the company, and this is
- 12:18Speaker 6: our first US introduction. House of Spells is a place
- 12:22Speaker 6: where fans come together have a phenomenal experience shopping for
- 12:29Speaker 6: their favorite license merge could be Lord of the Rings,
- 12:32Speaker 6: Hunger Games. If you come into our store, you'll understand
- 12:37Speaker 6: when I mean experienced. You get the wow factor the
- 12:40Speaker 6: moment you walk in. We have these forty foot ceilings
- 12:43Speaker 6: with chandeliers, The walls are decorated to look very medieval Gothic.
- 12:49Speaker 6: The lighting is phenomenal and the energy and Times Square.
- 12:53Speaker 6: We have about eighty thousand people walking in front of.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Our store every day. It's just yeah, a lot.
- 12:57Speaker 6: Of billboards and so it's so it's different than what
- 13:01Speaker 6: we did in UK, but in a good different And
- 13:05Speaker 6: it's twenty thousand square feet, it's a bigger store yet,
- 13:08Speaker 6: so the wow factors all over the store, from the beginning.
- 13:14Speaker 5: First floor into the second floor. So it's very, very exciting.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Well, let's touch on a little bit about Times Square him,
- 13:21Speaker 3: because House of Spells, being such a well known brand
- 13:25Speaker 3: in the UK, probably could have opened up anywhere in
- 13:28Speaker 3: the United States. So tell us why the ownership decided
- 13:33Speaker 3: on Times Square and why now?
- 13:35Speaker 6: Sure, Well, obviously Times Square is a brand known globally
- 13:39Speaker 6: over one hundred years old, so it's definitely very New York,
- 13:43Speaker 6: very United.
- 13:44Speaker 5: States, and we just felt that.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Being in Times Square to get into the rest of
- 13:50Speaker 6: the country would be the.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Best place to invade. Give a little bit of that
- 13:54Speaker 5: British invasion.
- 13:57Speaker 6: We did it in the seventeen hundreds when we came
- 13:59Speaker 6: here right down the Hudson River.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yeah, luckily it wasn't this far up. So now this
- 14:04Speaker 3: is a This British invasion is a pleasant invasion.
- 14:07Speaker 5: That's exciting.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Yes, yes, for some reason, HEIMI, I don't sense the
- 14:12Speaker 3: British accent with you, So tell us a little bit
- 14:16Speaker 3: about you, what you've been up to. I know you've
- 14:18Speaker 3: traveled all over the globe, correct, but your accent sounds
- 14:22Speaker 3: a bit maybe is it Jersey.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Yes, I'm basically been in the space of consulting beauty
- 14:33Speaker 6: technology and I was hired to help them launch this
- 14:37Speaker 6: beautiful brand into the United States. I'm basically from the
- 14:42Speaker 6: United States, but bringing in the British, helping them introduce
- 14:45Speaker 6: them their brand into the US.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You do have a hired a loyalists trying to I'm
- 14:50Speaker 2: trying to place it. Is it? Is it Spanish?
- 14:53Speaker 6: Yes, I'm born in South America. Came here when I
- 14:56Speaker 6: was very young, when I was Ecuador.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Okay, yes, I'm getting a little emerald legasi like I
- 15:07Speaker 2: expect you to go bam here in a second, and
- 15:09Speaker 2: that would be consistent with House of Spells, right, because
- 15:11Speaker 2: I'm going to put an.
- 15:12Speaker 7: X on you.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Bam there, you go take them care of exactly.
- 15:16Speaker 6: We're excited just being here in Times Square. It's it's vibrant,
- 15:20Speaker 6: the economy is coming back. We feel very confident about
- 15:23Speaker 6: investing in the United States. That was the major reason.
- 15:26Speaker 6: It's very no matter what everybody says that we feel the.
- 15:30Speaker 5: Market has a long term future.
- 15:32Speaker 6: You know, things happen between now and then, but long
- 15:35Speaker 6: term it's going to be very big, strong, and it's
- 15:37Speaker 6: going to have a huge comeback, and we want to
- 15:39Speaker 6: be a part of that.
- 15:40Speaker 2: There's there's obviously some like really deep fascination with some
- 15:43Speaker 2: of these things, but what goes into selecting a brand
- 15:46Speaker 2: for inclusion, you.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Know, quality being exclusive on some items as well, And basically.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I think you don't have like a Luisa may Alcott
- 15:56Speaker 2: Little Women Corner Like I'm guessing like those types of
- 15:59Speaker 2: things probably aren't there. So there is some flash and
- 16:03Speaker 2: bizazz to it, Yes.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Correct, there is.
- 16:06Speaker 6: We have one of the best best sourcing director that
- 16:11Speaker 6: goes all over the world to look for the best products,
- 16:14Speaker 6: and that's what's that's our strength. If you come to
- 16:16Speaker 6: our story, you're gonna you're going to be like, wow,
- 16:18Speaker 6: I never saw this at this place. At the other place,
- 16:20Speaker 6: I didn't even know this exists. So if you're a
- 16:22Speaker 6: fan of that particular license, you're going to find categories
- 16:26Speaker 6: that you didn't even know existing because we.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Source it all over the world. So that's that's one
- 16:30Speaker 5: of our strength is the products that we bring in.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And the narrative behind those brands has to have some
- 16:37Speaker 2: weight to it.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Correct.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Oh, yes, yes, yes, we we We stick to the
- 16:42Speaker 6: brands that have a huge following and the just iconic.
- 16:46Speaker 6: You know, some are We have Spider Man, we have
- 16:49Speaker 6: everything and anything you want in Spider Man, we have Batman,
- 16:52Speaker 6: we have and I can go on the list and
- 16:54Speaker 6: we have.
- 16:55Speaker 3: All And I think what's important to note, Kevin is
- 16:57Speaker 3: that it's all officially licensed brand material.
- 17:00Speaker 7: It's nice.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You're getting the real deal here. You're not getting some
- 17:03Speaker 3: you know, crappy knockoff things that you know, unfortunately the
- 17:07Speaker 3: city is becoming kind of known for. But this is
- 17:10Speaker 3: the real deal. And it's a ten year lease that
- 17:12Speaker 3: they sign. Twenty thousand square feet and the address is
- 17:16Speaker 3: two thirty four West forty second between seventh and eighth
- 17:20Speaker 3: sort of closer to eighth Avenue. And the hour amazing hours,
- 17:25Speaker 3: HAIMI you're I think you're open until midnight? Is that correct?
- 17:28Speaker 5: From ten in the morning to midnight? Correct? Wow?
- 17:32Speaker 3: And officially you open on Wednesday, the twenty ninth, but
- 17:35Speaker 3: if you're in the neighborhood you can get a sneak peek.
- 17:38Speaker 3: They are open for training and you know, teaching everybody
- 17:43Speaker 3: the ropes of how it works. I guess putting that
- 17:47Speaker 3: British polish on the hospitality. If you will, there you go.
- 17:52Speaker 5: It's a soft opening, correct lease stop by. That'll be
- 17:55Speaker 5: nice for them to get a preview before the grand opening.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Well, and what perfect timing because you're going to slide
- 18:00Speaker 2: right into the Halloween season and I bet you're just
- 18:02Speaker 2: going to go nuts those first two months.
- 18:05Speaker 5: We have a lot of stuff plans everybody's going to follow.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Everybody's gonna want the authentic you know, Harry Potter or
- 18:10Speaker 2: whatever it is.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Yeah, we have some great, great merch that it would
- 18:14Speaker 6: be grateful Halloween. We're doing some major, major collaboration for
- 18:18Speaker 6: other license brands as well.
- 18:20Speaker 5: We'll be promoting all that once it's official.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Well, we're grateful to have you with us. Best wishes.
- 18:25Speaker 2: House of Spells soft.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Opening now you can actually walk in now. But the
- 18:30Speaker 3: grand opening is July twenty rand opening twenty and we're
- 18:33Speaker 3: about to announce a big surprise for the grand opening
- 18:36Speaker 3: at ten am on the twenty ninth. We've got a
- 18:39Speaker 3: big person coming. We can't say. We can't say, but folks,
- 18:43Speaker 3: if you're in the vicinity, I suggest you show up.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I don't know the gain would be the right person,
- 18:47Speaker 2: by the way, because he's most famous for saying you
- 18:50Speaker 2: shall not pass and you want everybody to come in.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I tire Kevin McCollough and Kevin mccallough to be there.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Well, as long as I can hide in the corner
- 18:59Speaker 2: some we and just do the voice actors. That's fun anyway.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I'my Congratulations, Thank.
- 19:04Speaker 5: You, Kevin. I look forward seeing you and your kids.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Please all right, stop.
- 19:08Speaker 2: She's Christine, I'm Kevin. We're coming right back. It's Fun Friday.
- 19:16Speaker 7: Now.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm from New York, back to radio night life. You're
- 19:20Speaker 1: Kevin mccollor.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Welcome back. It's Fun Friday. And Christina, as we were
- 19:25Speaker 2: saying in the top of the show, like and we
- 19:28Speaker 2: talked about it last week too. We touched on it.
- 19:30Speaker 2: This mayor has had trouble figuring out where I don't know,
- 19:33Speaker 2: different immigrant groups live and where you know, what he's
- 19:37Speaker 2: missing by having this kind of weird view of what
- 19:40Speaker 2: he does is great parts of the city, like where
- 19:43Speaker 2: do you go to get the best Italian food Arthur Avenue?
- 19:46Speaker 3: Of course, right, And our listeners know that because we've
- 19:49Speaker 3: had our next guest on many time.
- 19:52Speaker 2: This guy's on our version of the map.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Sure, he's put Arthur Avenue on the map. His great
- 19:57Speaker 3: grandfather has put it our his grandfather's put it on
- 20:00Speaker 3: the map. So have I think seven other shops in
- 20:04Speaker 3: on the at the Belmont bid along Arthur Avenue. They
- 20:06Speaker 3: are all over one hundred years old and they are
- 20:09Speaker 3: still thriving and with the fourth or third generation working there.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Peter Madonia, Welcome to Radio Night Live. And what do
- 20:18Speaker 3: you think of this this map that somehow excludes little
- 20:22Speaker 3: Italy in the Bronx and Mulberry Street. Oh and it
- 20:25Speaker 3: excludes Astoria, Okay, a nod to my husband's people, the Greeks.
- 20:31Speaker 3: It kind of excludes them too, right, that excludes.
- 20:34Speaker 8: Boro Park and the Jewish community. And you know, yeah, look,
- 20:38Speaker 8: I have three thoughts about this that I've really thought through.
- 20:45Speaker 8: They either made a conscious decision to put that map
- 20:48Speaker 8: out the way it was put out, excluding the Irish
- 20:53Speaker 8: and Woodlawn, Italian enclaves and Little Lily Manhattan and the
- 20:58Speaker 8: Bronx story of Queens the Greek. Either it was intentional
- 21:04Speaker 8: or it was incredibly thoughtless. Now, as you have in
- 21:08Speaker 8: Christine and I have, we worked in city hall. City
- 21:11Speaker 8: hall's the office of last resort, because your job is
- 21:14Speaker 8: to make sure that stuff doesn't happen. So I'm sure
- 21:18Speaker 8: multiple people in city Hall saw this map and were
- 21:20Speaker 8: either okay with it or thought it was better to
- 21:24Speaker 8: put it out the way they put it out. But
- 21:26Speaker 8: the one thing that bothered me more was that they
- 21:28Speaker 8: tried to blame it on Eric Adams. And so I
- 21:32Speaker 8: went in a little bit of research on why did
- 21:34Speaker 8: the Adams administration put this map together? And by the way,
- 21:38Speaker 8: I've had dinner with Eric Adams on argur revenue before
- 21:42Speaker 8: and he got elected, and after he got elected, you
- 21:44Speaker 8: know where it was. This map was intended to be
- 21:48Speaker 8: a map that showed where the two hundred thousand migrants
- 21:51Speaker 8: who were sent to New York City during his administration,
- 21:55Speaker 8: where by the way, we never had encampments or things
- 21:58Speaker 8: like that to address it. They this is where people
- 22:02Speaker 8: went that came up here, you know, when two hundred
- 22:05Speaker 8: thousand migrants in a year and a half percent in
- 22:07Speaker 8: New York City. So that was the intent of their administration.
- 22:11Speaker 8: It was not intent to show all the ethnicity in
- 22:15Speaker 8: New York City. It was it was where did people
- 22:17Speaker 8: go who came here that that administration, I think pretty
- 22:22Speaker 8: pretty effectively managed to as painful as it was for
- 22:28Speaker 8: both them, the city residents, city visitors and then migrants
- 22:33Speaker 8: managed to get through, you know, that was foisted upon them.
- 22:38Speaker 8: So this administration is using the Adams administration is as
- 22:42Speaker 8: excuse for how that map came out just doesn't fly
- 22:45Speaker 8: with me. Well, so that's why the other.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Two part of the part of the problem that I
- 22:50Speaker 2: have with them even trying to pull that card out
- 22:54Speaker 2: of the deck, is to say that the Adams administration
- 22:58Speaker 2: did it. But I don't remember the Adams administration going
- 23:01Speaker 2: public with it and saying, you know, here's here's where
- 23:04Speaker 2: all the ethnicity, the ethnic communities are that you can
- 23:07Speaker 2: learn about New York City. Like the whole purpose of
- 23:09Speaker 2: maybe why the Adams administration had it and how the
- 23:13Speaker 2: Mamdanian administration is using it are completely are two completely
- 23:16Speaker 2: different things.
- 23:17Speaker 8: Yes, I mean, just look, it's very possible the Outams
- 23:20Speaker 8: administration was hoping for a second term and then they
- 23:24Speaker 8: would use that map as a let me show you
- 23:27Speaker 8: what happened. We all lived through the migrants coming here.
- 23:32Speaker 9: Yeah, but here's what's happened since then. So but no,
- 23:36Speaker 9: they didn't get a second term. But for the this
- 23:39Speaker 9: administration to blame that map on them, I'm sure there
- 23:44Speaker 9: were plenty of people in city Hall, and if there.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Weren't, that's a that's a whole different mistake that vetted
- 23:50Speaker 8: that map. And we're either okay with it or actually
- 23:54Speaker 8: liked it, but they or they.
- 23:57Speaker 9: Were completely thoughtless and didn't reckon nice.
- 24:00Speaker 8: Wait a minute, Yeah, there's a lot more ethnicities here
- 24:02Speaker 8: that aren't included.
- 24:04Speaker 7: May well think about that.
- 24:06Speaker 2: It's good to get your perspective on that. We've only
- 24:08Speaker 2: got a minute left, and I want to preview September first.
- 24:11Speaker 2: You've invited us up. We're going to be in on
- 24:14Speaker 2: Arthur Avenue. Linda Perillo is going to sign books. Christina
- 24:17Speaker 2: and I are going to tape an hour. Linda and
- 24:18Speaker 2: I are going to tape an hour. We're gonna do
- 24:20Speaker 2: some really fun stuff that day. What's it all about?
- 24:24Speaker 8: I mean, I'm so excited about it, both for showcasing,
- 24:28Speaker 8: but my my mom and dad the first time they
- 24:30Speaker 8: went back to Italy, was on a Perillo tour. It
- 24:34Speaker 8: was not an accident, Yeah, absolute fact.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yeah, Well Perrillo's coming Belcos. I mean this is where
- 24:41Speaker 3: they started. They started in the Belmont area.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Yeah, this is this is yeah, full circle coming around
- 24:50Speaker 8: and you know, maybe that'll be on the map some day.
- 24:53Speaker 2: We'll see. We can only hope. All right, Peter Mandonia,
- 24:56Speaker 2: keep doing a great job up in the Belmont bid
- 24:58Speaker 2: thank you for being with.
- 24:59Speaker 8: Us, and thank you both. We appreciate it, and I've
- 25:02Speaker 8: got it.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I'm never going to forget where our gravenue is. I
- 25:05Speaker 2: don't know if the mayor will, but I'm never going
- 25:07Speaker 2: to We're coming right back. It's Radio Night Live.
- 25:14Speaker 7: What a little moonline can do.
- 25:16Speaker 1: It's Radio night Life, yours Kevin McCullough, A little more
- 25:22Speaker 1: come back.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It's the Friday edition of Fun Friday Here, Radio Night Live.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Kevin McCullough, Christine Nicholas, glad to have you with us,
- 25:29Speaker 2: and Christine just I mean, I've been kind of like
- 25:32Speaker 2: fun and on it. In all seriousness, it was a
- 25:34Speaker 2: great time. You invited us to go cruise the port
- 25:39Speaker 2: and we were able to see the tall ships kind
- 25:41Speaker 2: of up close and kind of see them all you know,
- 25:44Speaker 2: docked in different places around and the people that put
- 25:47Speaker 2: that on we are very honored to welcome to the show,
- 25:49Speaker 2: give you the honors.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Well, thank you and thank you Travis Noyes and Morgan
- 25:56Speaker 3: from New York City Water Cruises. That's the operation that
- 25:59Speaker 3: took us out on the Grand Mariner that beautiful evening
- 26:02Speaker 3: to be able to get up close to see those
- 26:04Speaker 3: saleforth tall ships from all over the world. But you
- 26:08Speaker 3: don't need sail force, which of course we know those
- 26:11Speaker 3: tall ships are now heading back to their home countries
- 26:15Speaker 3: to get out on the water. So Travis, we're happy
- 26:17Speaker 3: that you're with us. Welcome to Radio Night Live and
- 26:19Speaker 3: tell us what we can expect if we go on
- 26:23Speaker 3: a NYC Water Cruises vessel.
- 26:26Speaker 7: Awesome.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Well, Nick, thank you both for having me and it
- 26:28Speaker 4: was a pleasure to have you out on the New
- 26:31Speaker 4: York Carver to see all the tall ships, which we're
- 26:34Speaker 4: you know, I think once in a lifetime experience or
- 26:36Speaker 4: at Lisa, once in fifty year experience.
- 26:40Speaker 7: History holds.
- 26:41Speaker 4: And so yeah, you know, New York City Water Cruises,
- 26:43Speaker 4: you know we're three year old company and we have
- 26:46Speaker 4: three vessels on New York Harver we have the Luis
- 26:50Speaker 4: of the Seas, the Eternity, and then the Grand Mariner,
- 26:53Speaker 4: and so we really have three distinct product lines that
- 26:57Speaker 4: you know, we offer, you know, to our customers. We
- 26:59Speaker 4: have a high end dinner cruise, you know, which is
- 27:02Speaker 4: you know, one of the only plated dinner cruises you know, around,
- 27:06Speaker 4: so you can get a five or six course you know,
- 27:07Speaker 4: including drinks, and we run that six nights a week.
- 27:11Speaker 4: And then we have the Grand Mariner, which is the
- 27:14Speaker 4: vessel that you all went on, and it's converted overnight vessel.
- 27:17Speaker 4: We can carry out to seven hundred people and we've
- 27:19Speaker 4: installed you know, one of the city's best sound systems
- 27:23Speaker 4: and light systems, and so, you know, we we do
- 27:25Speaker 4: sunset music cruises, we do live music cruises, we do
- 27:29Speaker 4: large charters and events you know on that vessel.
- 27:32Speaker 7: And then we have the Eternity, which is our.
- 27:33Speaker 4: High end charter vessel, which we use for you know,
- 27:36Speaker 4: corporate events and then big events like the Fourth of
- 27:39Speaker 4: July and.
- 27:40Speaker 3: New Year's You mentioned a couple of names there of
- 27:43Speaker 3: these vessels, so Kevin had a question about how these
- 27:46Speaker 3: names come to be.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I look, I've just I've been around some boats. Most
- 27:51Speaker 2: of my life, and there's they're always named interesting things,
- 27:54Speaker 2: and I always want to know kind of the story
- 27:57Speaker 2: behind how the names come along. But you were telling
- 27:59Speaker 2: me you kind of inherited the names on these boats,
- 28:03Speaker 2: and you said that it's bad luck to rename a
- 28:05Speaker 2: boat once you change owners.
- 28:07Speaker 4: Oh yeah, so it's uh, you know, it's I know,
- 28:11Speaker 4: it's Maritimes superstition. But you know, when you're in a
- 28:14Speaker 4: business like ours, sometimes those are well founded. So yeah,
- 28:18Speaker 4: generally it's customed to keep the name of the vessel,
- 28:22Speaker 4: you know when you take it, with the exception of
- 28:24Speaker 4: actually lightships which change names according to whatever port they
- 28:28Speaker 4: go to next.
- 28:30Speaker 3: What what does that mean exactly?
- 28:31Speaker 2: That work?
- 28:32Speaker 4: Well, you know, so let's say, you know, if a
- 28:35Speaker 4: lightship moves from New York carbon to Nantucket, right, it
- 28:37Speaker 4: would change its name to the Nantucket you know, when
- 28:40Speaker 4: it gets when it moves there.
- 28:43Speaker 7: But that's a kind of a unique situation.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Well, so was the Titanic called something else? Goodness, wasn't it.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I just think that I think that was just they
- 28:54Speaker 2: didn't even have a chance to change the name. That
- 28:55Speaker 2: was the maiden voyage there was.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, well, Travis Noys, we love what you did
- 29:03Speaker 3: before us. It was a beautiful ship. And you mentioned
- 29:05Speaker 3: that the Grand Mariner was an overnight ship at one
- 29:09Speaker 3: point it was a cruise line. How difficult is it
- 29:13Speaker 3: to refurbish a large vessel such as the Grand Mariner.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's it's a lot, you know, you know,
- 29:20Speaker 4: fortunately we have a really capable team in house. But
- 29:24Speaker 4: you know, for us, you know, we really got renovated
- 29:26Speaker 4: the boats. We took out all the cabins, you know,
- 29:28Speaker 4: but we didn't keep you know, things on board like
- 29:30Speaker 4: a full kitchen, you know, some of the kind of
- 29:32Speaker 4: sitting in VIP areas you know on board. But you know,
- 29:35Speaker 4: converting this vessel which used to I believe I have
- 29:37Speaker 4: about fifty two overnight cabins on it, you know, and
- 29:41Speaker 4: it's something that we can you know, operate on in
- 29:44Speaker 4: New York Harbor. And you know right now has the
- 29:46Speaker 4: you know, the largest open you know, upper deck you
- 29:48Speaker 4: know on New York Harbor.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Oh and and that's it explains why you were able
- 29:53Speaker 3: to have a DJ on there and also a narrator
- 29:57Speaker 3: to talk about the tall ships is that the is
- 29:59Speaker 3: the Grand Mariner the boat that is going to have
- 30:03Speaker 3: the sunset cruises it is.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Yeah, so that's really our kind of the one we
- 30:08Speaker 4: do all of our music events on, you know, because
- 30:11Speaker 4: we have the ability to put you know, for six
- 30:13Speaker 4: hundred people on the top deck, you know, with you know,
- 30:16Speaker 4: you know, drink some music and great skyline views.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I get any better than that.
- 30:20Speaker 2: See some future music videos being shot on the deck
- 30:23Speaker 2: of the Grand Mariner. I want to say thank you
- 30:25Speaker 2: for keeping that kitchen a board because you guys did
- 30:29Speaker 2: dinner and Christine, I don't know about you, but my
- 30:32Speaker 2: whole crew came home full of steak and other yummy
- 30:36Speaker 2: stuff that they were just so like that. That was
- 30:37Speaker 2: so much fun. We have to go back and do
- 30:39Speaker 2: it again.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Yes. In fact, Josh was given the choice of steak
- 30:43Speaker 3: or a burger and he said both, and I believe
- 30:46Speaker 3: he had both and he enjoyed both. But that's Josh.
- 30:49Speaker 3: He likes to eat. Can I tell you.
- 30:52Speaker 4: I don't know where it all goes, but you know,
- 30:54Speaker 4: I'm proud of you, Josh.
- 30:56Speaker 3: The skinniest eater ever.
- 30:59Speaker 2: So the the Sunset Cruises, Now, do you have acts
- 31:03Speaker 2: booked currently for the fall?
- 31:04Speaker 7: Like?
- 31:04Speaker 2: Are there special things flag that people can say? I
- 31:07Speaker 2: want to make sure I do that be there.
- 31:09Speaker 4: What's yes, Generally, the way it works is that we
- 31:12Speaker 4: have you know, our own kind of in house DJ,
- 31:16Speaker 4: and we supplement it with live musicians, you know, for
- 31:19Speaker 4: you know the majority of our cruises. And then you
- 31:21Speaker 4: know what we'll do is, you know, two or three
- 31:23Speaker 4: times a month we'll bring on a special act which
- 31:25Speaker 4: will be like you know, a band or you know,
- 31:27Speaker 4: something kind of more traditionally kind of live. So that's
- 31:30Speaker 4: you can check our website in NYC Watercruises dot com
- 31:33Speaker 4: for any of that information.
- 31:35Speaker 2: So some of that's already up there. So talk about
- 31:37Speaker 2: the corporate boat because the difference between like if someone's thinking, well,
- 31:42Speaker 2: I want to do a nice evening or I want
- 31:44Speaker 2: to do a nice event, what's what should the rule
- 31:46Speaker 2: of thumb be in terms of like which service you're offering?
- 31:49Speaker 7: You know, like it kind of really good.
- 31:51Speaker 4: The great thing about the company is that we have
- 31:54Speaker 4: we can really hit all needs and price points. Right
- 31:57Speaker 4: so even like on the Grand Mariner itself, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 4: we could do a private them there, you know, which
- 32:01Speaker 4: is more you know kind of cocktails, you know, and
- 32:03Speaker 4: you know, join the music and they know we have
- 32:05Speaker 4: kind of semi private thing you know, and that can
- 32:06Speaker 4: be a.
- 32:06Speaker 7: Little bit of a lower budget, you know.
- 32:08Speaker 4: And then we have you know, like the Dinner Crews
- 32:11Speaker 4: where you could either lease out the boat or you
- 32:13Speaker 4: know a deck of the boat, you know, for a
- 32:15Speaker 4: more high end experience, you know, and that can range
- 32:17Speaker 4: for either you know, call it fifteen people up to
- 32:20Speaker 4: one hundred and ten people. And then for our large events,
- 32:22Speaker 4: we have the Eternity, which is three hundred passenger, which
- 32:24Speaker 4: is you know, Florida ceiling glass windows. We have you know,
- 32:28Speaker 4: you know, bridal and corporate suites, you know kind of
- 32:30Speaker 4: you know, we're changing rooms and things like that, you
- 32:32Speaker 4: know as part of that, you know, full entertainment and DJ.
- 32:35Speaker 4: So that's really kind of more for our product launches,
- 32:38Speaker 4: you know, our large corporate groups you know coming in,
- 32:41Speaker 4: you know, and some of the higher budget incentive groups.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And I'm guessing you're not turning down a wedding or
- 32:46Speaker 2: two if they say, hey, we want to do that
- 32:48Speaker 2: with that one as well.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yeah, No, we love weddings, We love way you know,
- 32:52Speaker 4: being part of that and getting married out for the
- 32:54Speaker 4: Statue of Liberty is you know, pretty awesome.
- 32:56Speaker 2: So it's pretty cool witness to have signed your marriage
- 32:59Speaker 2: to it. All right, that's Travis. Thank you for all
- 33:03Speaker 2: that you did for us and helping us see the
- 33:06Speaker 2: harbor with the tall ships. That was really really fun.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Give the website one more time by Nycwatercruises dot Com.
- 33:12Speaker 2: All right, coming right back, Christine's got tips for your
- 33:15Speaker 2: weekend nook away.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Once again from New York. Here's Radio Night Live and
- 33:25Speaker 1: Kevin McCullough.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Welcome back. Final few minutes. It's time to get our
- 33:30Speaker 2: weekend tips on. And I'm going to guess Christine that
- 33:34Speaker 2: in the couple of weeks around September first, Arthur Avenue
- 33:37Speaker 2: is going to make the tips list. But what's on
- 33:38Speaker 2: the list for.
- 33:39Speaker 3: This week, Well, I think it can make the tips
- 33:40Speaker 3: list now, I think. Don't wait for a map from
- 33:43Speaker 3: this from city Hall to tell you how to go
- 33:44Speaker 3: Old Okay, I'll do that.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You'll never get there.
- 33:48Speaker 3: It's right near Fordham University, the Botanical Garden and the
- 33:53Speaker 3: Bronx Zoo. You'll find the best Italian food ever, still
- 33:57Speaker 3: operated by the authentic Italians, and also great Albanian cafes.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Let's give a shout out to the Albanians because we
- 34:04Speaker 3: are living harmoniously with unafacha una rachez. They say so,
