- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another French adventure? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practicing my numbers from last time, so I think I'm ready for something new. Lucas: And that's exactly why we're here with Fexingo, to help you make real progress with your French. You know, we keep this show completely ad-free, and that's because listeners like you support us. If you want to keep it that way, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a simple way to say thanks and keep the episodes coming without any annoying interruptions. Lucas: Exactly. So today, let's talk about asking 'how much' in French. It's super useful when you're shopping or at a market. Luna: Oh, I definitely need that. I always get stuck when I see a price tag. Lucas: Then let's start with the classic: Combien ça coûte? Luna: Combien ça coûte? Lucas: It means 'How much does it cost?' Simple and direct. Luna: Combien ça coûte? I love how it rolls off the tongue. Lucas: And you can also say it in a slightly different order: Ça coûte combien? Luna: Ça coûte combien? Lucas: Both are perfectly fine. You'll hear both in France. Luna: So I can pick whichever I feel like saying? Lucas: Exactly. Now let's make it more specific. If you want to ask about a particular item, you can say Combien coûte le pain? Luna: Combien coûte le pain? That means 'How much is the bread?' Lucas: Perfect. You're getting the hang of it. Luna: What about asking just 'how much is this?' while pointing at something? Lucas: Great question. You can use C'est combien? Luna: C'est combien? Lucas: Or even Ça fait combien? which is a bit more informal. Luna: Ça fait combien? Lucas: So we have five different ways to ask the same thing. Let's review them all. Luna: Combien ça coûte? Lucas: Ça coûte combien? Luna: Combien coûte le pain? Lucas: C'est combien? Luna: Ça fait combien? Lucas: Now imagine you're at a bakery, and you want to ask about a croissant. What do you say? Luna: Combien coûte le croissant? Lucas: Exactly. Or you could say, Ça coûte combien, le croissant? Luna: Oh, I like that version. Lucas: And if the seller says 'Cinq euros', you know it's five euros. Luna: Cinq euros. That's easy. Lucas: Now let's practice a mini conversation. You're at the market, you see a nice scarf. You ask: C'est combien? Luna: C'est combien? Lucas: The seller says 'Dix euros'. You say 'Merci' and walk away. Luna: That seems easy enough. Lucas: Let's do one more. You're at a café, and you want to ask the price of a coffee. What's your question? Luna: Combien coûte le café? Lucas: Or, Ça fait combien? Luna: Ça fait combien? Lucas: Perfect. You're ready to shop in French. Luna: I feel so much more confident now. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Remember, practice these phrases until they feel natural. See you next time. Luna: À bientôt!
