- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I'm not sure what it's like the equivalent of our
- 0:34Speaker 1: first episode of NHL Unscripted.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Maybe it's like when the Beatles first start performing. I
- 0:38Speaker 2: don't know. Maybe Citizen Kane first appeared in the theaters.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Maybe it was when Seinfeld finally broke through the zeitgeist.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I don't know about you, Jay, but everyone I'm going
- 0:45Speaker 2: to people like, wait, unscripted. I'm like, yeah, that's right.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I don't know how else you could say. It was
- 0:49Speaker 2: a hurricane unleashing our first episode.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Yeah, other than your intros, everything was unscripted.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Again, we appreciate the feedback. Please go to Apple podcast
- 0:59Speaker 1: you could subscribe, rate and.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Review and tell your friends. JD just just a beast
- 1:02Speaker 2: on social media. Got the clip of us and the
- 1:05Speaker 2: kid Mirrow. I know that's your thought.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You know, having done podcasts for years, people say to me,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you come for the guests, you stay for the hosts.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Meaning that's a big name.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The kid Mary loves Hockey was funny, he was entertaining
- 1:15Speaker 1: and it Alsodden.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You go, hey, Demurs and Brook, these guys are pretty good.
- 1:18Speaker 2: This week.
- 1:19Speaker 1: We're keeping that momentum going, Don Grenado, are you kidding me?
- 1:23Speaker 1: We're leading into the hockey zeitgeist of the hockey family today.
- 1:26Speaker 3: The Don Juan himself coming in talking all things coaches
- 1:30Speaker 3: right now, so it's gonna be nice to pick his
- 1:32Speaker 3: brain a little bit in terms of all these this
- 1:35Speaker 3: coaching carousel in the NHL, and guys are just getting
- 1:39Speaker 3: I mean, I don't even want to say it, but
- 1:40Speaker 3: you're just you got the red dot on your forehead
- 1:42Speaker 3: as soon as you become an NHL coach nowadays. And
- 1:45Speaker 3: I guess you can credit that to paying these young
- 1:48Speaker 3: guys so much money that if you're not developing the
- 1:51Speaker 3: right way or they're not kind of playing up to
- 1:53Speaker 3: their standards, you're the first one out the door. So
- 1:55Speaker 3: I wonder how it's I want to ask them a
- 1:57Speaker 3: little bit, like how it's affecting their mindset as a
- 2:00Speaker 3: coach coming in the NHL, because honestly, like you have
- 2:03Speaker 3: like ten games and then you're out the door. Look
- 2:05Speaker 3: at look at your banister, poor guy.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely true. It's It's the only thing I
- 2:09Speaker 2: will say is though, but then if you have success.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I feel the longevity of coaches works, meaning Monty gets
- 2:14Speaker 1: fired by boss and the Five Days Letter's twenty five
- 2:16Speaker 1: million dollars.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So it's a very tough job.
- 2:19Speaker 1: But once you get a certain level of reputation, excellence,
- 2:21Speaker 1: et cetera, you can thrive.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But we're gonna talk to Don in just a second.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I do want to mention this episode is being recorded
- 2:26Speaker 1: Thursday afternoon before the Thursday games have been played, so
- 2:29Speaker 1: everything sounds dated.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Just just let us know. Jady and I both on the road.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I just came back from Dallas and the Winter meetings
- 2:34Speaker 1: there speaking at baseball course want Soto Science. This is
- 2:36Speaker 1: a gigantic six hundred and sixty five million dollars deal
- 2:39Speaker 1: for fifty years.
- 2:40Speaker 3: That was Sunday night, Buddy. My kid, My kid is
- 2:43Speaker 3: just learning how to be a dh Whenever I decide
- 2:46Speaker 3: to jump down that I'm just teaching. Hey, just learn
- 2:49Speaker 3: how to hit the ball three times.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Come up and play at all three times. You're gonna
- 2:53Speaker 3: make seven hundred million dollars. I mean, it's absolutely insane.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I can't believe. And for him, I mean, there's now
- 3:00Speaker 3: is there loyalty in baseball? Like if you if you
- 3:03Speaker 3: talk to some guy in the NHL, Like there's some
- 3:06Speaker 3: guys that would not even consider signing, Like if you're
- 3:09Speaker 3: in Montreal, you don't sign in Boston. And even though
- 3:12Speaker 3: it does happen on occasion, like if there is that rivalry,
- 3:16Speaker 3: it's so tough. So I'm like, but I guess you know,
- 3:19Speaker 3: Wan just no, it does not care. And I guess
- 3:22Speaker 3: he liked his living in New York. So he's just
- 3:24Speaker 3: gonna go right across the subway and enjoy his time there,
- 3:27Speaker 3: exactly as the Mets.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Had a great year. The Yankees know he's Wan gone
- 3:31Speaker 2: for New York Mets.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Well done, there you go. Now see that's better. Maybe
- 3:35Speaker 3: a little too robotic to start. Now we're getting you
- 3:37Speaker 3: loose here, hey.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Top line topics. Okay, we had our introduction. Now we're
- 3:40Speaker 1: actually gonna get into topics of the week. The New
- 3:42Speaker 1: York Rangers, Jay, what what?
- 3:43Speaker 4: What?
- 3:44Speaker 2: Mass? This is?
- 3:45Speaker 1: You and I both live in the New Jersey area.
- 3:47Speaker 1: That's well said and succinct. I was with the grim
- 3:49Speaker 1: Reaper Stu Grimson last Friday on an.
- 3:51Speaker 3: HL network talking about not getting a word and ye
- 3:54Speaker 3: I love.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Grimmer, I love, but not gonna He's not gonna get cheated.
- 3:58Speaker 1: They right, as an attorney. He's got a lot to say. Yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and he's tough, so you can whatever you want. It's fine, ooh,
- 4:05Speaker 1: can wrap them. It's okay. Yeah, but that was trueball
- 4:07Speaker 1: watch day and we're waiting for the news to come
- 4:10Speaker 1: down eventually. All right, Jacob Truba, trader of the Ducks,
- 4:12Speaker 1: want to Stew's former teams. You know what this is like,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it's a former team, you're partial to them, But I'm like, man,
- 4:16Speaker 1: how do you feel to.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Be Jacob Truba?
- 4:18Speaker 1: This this guy is having a tough season and he
- 4:20Speaker 1: get sent to Anaheim where you're part of a rebuilding.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You're not gonna be contending. But this feels like the
- 4:25Speaker 2: first domino for the Rangers.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Right well, Trader captain and they have a history now
- 4:28Speaker 1: by the way of trading captains, the last captain to
- 4:30Speaker 1: leave like on his own unceremoniously was Yarmir Yager. Otherwise
- 4:34Speaker 1: it's that the last four captains where he's like, all right,
- 4:35Speaker 1: we're done with a captaincy is It is.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Like a it's a scarlet letter with the Rangers.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But point is this they signed to stir from the
- 4:41Speaker 1: big deal eleven point five million aa B eight years
- 4:44Speaker 1: ninety two, people are still pissed about Chris Cryder and Zabnazade.
- 4:47Speaker 1: How did the Rangers go from President's Trophy winners to
- 4:50Speaker 1: just an absolute soap opera?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, to start with it, it's it's funny because people
- 4:55Speaker 3: go people fansy it up in arms with like a
- 4:57Speaker 3: no trade cause, and I'm like, if a team wants
- 4:59Speaker 3: to get rid of you, they will find a way
- 5:01Speaker 3: to make it so goddamn uncomfortable that you're gonna want
- 5:03Speaker 3: to leave. I was a perfect example. It happened with
- 5:05Speaker 3: me my year in Florida when they traded me and
- 5:08Speaker 3: you know water under the Bridge.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I saw Dale tallon in Florida when I was doing
- 5:12Speaker 3: some radio for the Sharks and we talked about it,
- 5:14Speaker 3: and I literally laughed because he shook my hand and said, hey,
- 5:17Speaker 3: clean slate, Like you denied a couple of trades, and
- 5:20Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, clean slate. And then he shipped
- 5:21Speaker 3: me to Arizona the next day. So so it's so
- 5:25Speaker 3: funny because people were like, oh, it's got a no trade,
- 5:27Speaker 3: Like what a bad deal, And like, if a team
- 5:30Speaker 3: truly wants to get rid of you, they will get
- 5:32Speaker 3: rid of you because they will find a way. They'll
- 5:34Speaker 3: make it so gosh darn uncomfortable. You're just gonna be like, hey,
- 5:37Speaker 3: get me, send me anywhere but here. But you know,
- 5:41Speaker 3: it's tough because Truba denies the trade, and that kind
- 5:45Speaker 3: of he denies the trade. Early in the summer, there
- 5:48Speaker 3: was a mistake by management because management leaked it. They
- 5:52Speaker 3: didn't have their house in order it gets out to
- 5:54Speaker 3: the public. And whether that was that was on purpose
- 5:56Speaker 3: or not, what happens is now you clip Truba's wings
- 5:59Speaker 3: because now Trooper is the captain. He's got to go
- 6:01Speaker 3: to the room and be like, hey, boys, like let's
- 6:04Speaker 3: pick it up here, and guys are like, they don't
- 6:06Speaker 3: even want you here. So it's always in the back
- 6:09Speaker 3: of guy's heads. So it always right away you start
- 6:12Speaker 3: with a little bit of dissension, and it's never a
- 6:14Speaker 3: good thing. Now I think Truba finally recognized when just
- 6:18Speaker 3: the wheels started to come off. But it's also I
- 6:21Speaker 3: always say, like part of the blames on management, but
- 6:23Speaker 3: then coaching staff as well, because for some reason, I
- 6:26Speaker 3: love Peter Laviolette is a great coach. If he gets fired,
- 6:30Speaker 3: he's going to find another job. And we talked about
- 6:32Speaker 3: the coaching carousel, but it seems like he's very raw raw.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I've heard he has fantastic speeches, but sometimes it only
- 6:41Speaker 3: lasts a certain amount of time and then it just
- 6:44Speaker 3: it starts falling on deaf years. So I feel like
- 6:47Speaker 3: they've completely gotten out of their structure. Nobody's playing the
- 6:49Speaker 3: right way. It's so topsy turvy. Everybody, I think, thought
- 6:54Speaker 3: that the True Betrayed would right the ship. But you
- 6:56Speaker 3: can't expect to go lose the way you did in
- 6:59Speaker 3: the playoffs the last year to the Florida Panthers, not
- 7:01Speaker 3: do anything, not piss a drop in terms of bringing
- 7:07Speaker 3: in people from other teams. The only move they did
- 7:10Speaker 3: was get rid of Barkley Goudreau, which was kind of
- 7:12Speaker 3: They did that poorly as well, and then expect a
- 7:14Speaker 3: different result because the way they lost against Florida was
- 7:18Speaker 3: getting out gritted and outworks. You need to address that
- 7:21Speaker 3: if you wanted to get to the next level, whether
- 7:22Speaker 3: it's bringing in one or two guys, and I just
- 7:25Speaker 3: think it's there's more coming. I think the True Betrayed
- 7:28Speaker 3: opens up the door. I think there needs to be
- 7:31Speaker 3: a couple more moves. They need to go get somebody
- 7:33Speaker 3: on the back end big time, because I think that
- 7:37Speaker 3: back end is as much as those guys are NHL players,
- 7:39Speaker 3: they're not, you know, they need something on the top
- 7:42Speaker 3: four of their big time.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, And I thought to your point about bringing in
- 7:45Speaker 1: new personnel and new names.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I like a good rumor as much as anybody.
- 7:48Speaker 1: But when I heard the potentially Brady Kuchuk, I'm like,
- 7:51Speaker 1: are you kidding me? Like, do you think the Auto
- 7:53Speaker 1: Center is the one great thing they have going for
- 7:54Speaker 1: themselves right now?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Is Brady Kidchuk? This guy's awesome face to Francis et cetera.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Do you want to say They're like, hey, you know what,
- 8:00Speaker 2: We're gonna give up if you punt on Brady Kitchuk.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It was so ridiculous.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And I'm again I'm not calling up Brooks with the
- 8:05Speaker 1: New York Post, that's his sources that Bradykchuk talks were happening.
- 8:09Speaker 1: But again, Bruce Garrett, who covers the sentence as you
- 8:11Speaker 1: and I know, is his Lockedowin's like, no no chance
- 8:13Speaker 1: sends over. Michael Amlauer alleged the Rangers engage in quote
- 8:16Speaker 1: soft tampering.
- 8:18Speaker 2: That's one rumor. Gee, I didn't Maybe maybe there was
- 8:19Speaker 2: a conversation happened.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I'm like, Brady Kchuck ain't getting dealt in the Center's
- 8:22Speaker 1: the Rangers.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I think Larry Brooks was a slow day
- 8:26Speaker 3: at the office and he's trying to get a little
- 8:28Speaker 3: juice going, you know, Brooksy, he couldn't just keep you know,
- 8:31Speaker 3: crapping on the Rangers, so he had to just bring
- 8:33Speaker 3: somebody else in. But honestly, I don't know, I've heard
- 8:36Speaker 3: some weird stuff from that locker room. And again, a
- 8:39Speaker 3: guy like Brady who I'm sure we interviewed him for
- 8:43Speaker 3: Amazon Coast to Coast and he wants to win so bad.
- 8:46Speaker 3: You can see it. He wants to compete with his brother.
- 8:49Speaker 3: So if he doesn't see that the franchise is going
- 8:52Speaker 3: in the right direction, I wouldn't put it past him
- 8:55Speaker 3: to be like, hey, like not necessarily coming from the team.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I think the team wants to keep him. But maybe
- 8:59Speaker 3: Brady's like, listen, like this is not right for me,
- 9:03Speaker 3: and you gotta people got to recognize like his father,
- 9:05Speaker 3: Keith Kachuk and his brother, they understand being in the
- 9:09Speaker 3: right culture and the right franchise, and they might be
- 9:11Speaker 3: in his ear as well, Like there's so many. You know,
- 9:14Speaker 3: I'm a very much. Where there's smoke, there's fire, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 3: I think there could be something and it might not
- 9:18Speaker 3: be from the Ottawa side, it could be from the
- 9:21Speaker 3: the Brady Kuchuk side. And I'm not trying to pour
- 9:23Speaker 3: gas on this fire. Well I kind of am, because
- 9:25Speaker 3: we're you know, we're we're trying to get clicks. Here's smoke,
- 9:28Speaker 3: the fire. That's where the medium bucks are is with clicks.
- 9:31Speaker 3: So we're trying to get clicks.
- 9:32Speaker 2: But to your point, it's not out a question. There
- 9:34Speaker 2: has been not a question.
- 9:35Speaker 1: There has been president of a kachuk who was unhappy
- 9:38Speaker 1: with the way things were going in a Canadian city
- 9:39Speaker 1: and then got dealt.
- 9:41Speaker 3: We've seen, listen, we've seen big trades, especially that one
- 9:45Speaker 3: that was the fleecing done by the Florida Panthers of
- 9:48Speaker 3: the Calgary Flames. Oh my goodness, that is a that
- 9:52Speaker 3: is a little spank on the tushy between organizations, because
- 9:56Speaker 3: that is like your child, Chad's child, child rearing at
- 9:59Speaker 3: its best. They destroyed Calgary with that trade. And and
- 10:02Speaker 3: you know, listen, Huberto's I found his game, I think.
- 10:06Speaker 3: But yeah, that I mean getting Matthew Chuck and Sam Bennett.
- 10:11Speaker 3: You can't ask for a better trade.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So I don't know, Let's go to another Canadian city
- 10:14Speaker 1: on Tuesday Night. Goal through the thatcher. Demko makes his
- 10:17Speaker 1: first Star of the season for the Canucks and his
- 10:18Speaker 1: first appearance is April eighteenth. We all know Demko is
- 10:21Speaker 1: a critical part of this team. Little rusty because a
- 10:23Speaker 1: four goals of twenty five shots in an overtime loss
- 10:26Speaker 1: of Saint Louis.
- 10:26Speaker 2: JT.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Miller has been out at least Patterson underwhelming. I'm an idiot,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Jay I sat at the start of the year. You
- 10:31Speaker 1: know what, Canucks can make it on the run, why
- 10:32Speaker 1: not if Demko's healthy. Instead, they've been underwhelming. The disappointment
- 10:36Speaker 1: to me, how do you fix this team?
- 10:38Speaker 3: Listen, I think that you know they had a lot.
- 10:41Speaker 3: What happened last year with them is there. Everything bounced
- 10:44Speaker 3: their way, and that's what can happen in NHL season.
- 10:46Speaker 3: They got great goal attending, They got guys. You know
- 10:50Speaker 3: when Demco was out at Archer, she locks come in
- 10:53Speaker 3: and he was like incredible, came out of nowhere. He
- 10:56Speaker 3: made He made the last save against me in my
- 10:58Speaker 3: professional career in the miners. It was a great a
- 11:01Speaker 3: scoring chance. That's son of a Beechers.
- 11:05Speaker 2: A third stringle the pride of Latvia. Yeah, who is it?
- 11:08Speaker 2: One of the great surprise stories that conocks is. Also,
- 11:10Speaker 2: I was stoned you in your final.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Stone me to tie it up in the last playoff
- 11:14Speaker 3: game and they ended up eliminating us crazy a little
- 11:17Speaker 3: post to post and I thought I had him a
- 11:19Speaker 3: low blocker and I did not. Clearly I did not,
- 11:23Speaker 3: because I'm here right now with fake teeth and and
- 11:26Speaker 3: a podcast with my heart, so uh no. But everything
- 11:29Speaker 3: went their way, and we kind of sat it on
- 11:31Speaker 3: the network like they haven't really faced any adversity. They
- 11:34Speaker 3: haven't really, you know, their third line was cooking with
- 11:37Speaker 3: you know, Garland Blueger and Joshua, and then they haven't
- 11:40Speaker 3: really faced anything. So I'm like, I just don't know
- 11:43Speaker 3: what this team is. And now they're facing adversity. Now
- 11:46Speaker 3: it's like, you know, JT. I hope he's okay mentally,
- 11:50Speaker 3: you know, I tried to reach out to some guys
- 11:52Speaker 3: and just be like, I hope he's okay and his
- 11:54Speaker 3: family's okay, And what I got was kind of kind
- 11:56Speaker 3: of that like he's he's gonna he's doing Okay, he's
- 11:58Speaker 3: just taking some time and and rightfully so I think,
- 12:02Speaker 3: you know, mental health is so important and in the NHL,
- 12:05Speaker 3: and whether it's family or him, you know, I just
- 12:07Speaker 3: hope a speedy recovery he gets. Dakota Joshua ends up
- 12:10Speaker 3: having to deal with the cancer scare, who is the
- 12:13Speaker 3: heartbeat of that team for a long while, And then
- 12:16Speaker 3: you're asking Elias Petterson to do a lot. But Elias
- 12:18Speaker 3: Petterson is is I think is getting too much criticism
- 12:22Speaker 3: because he's trying to play within that system with Rick Talckett.
- 12:25Speaker 3: With Rick talcke wants guys to play really hard and
- 12:27Speaker 3: really physical and you know, be grinders b JT. Millers,
- 12:31Speaker 3: and I don't know if Elias can do that on
- 12:36Speaker 3: you know, on a day to day basis. You got
- 12:38Speaker 3: to let Elias like just be skilled. He does play
- 12:41Speaker 3: physical and he plays hard, but you got to let
- 12:42Speaker 3: it do him on his own accord. And I think
- 12:46Speaker 3: he listens. It's a little bit like Mika's advantage that
- 12:49Speaker 3: he listens to the outside noise too much and when
- 12:51Speaker 3: people get on him, he kind of goes into a shell.
- 12:53Speaker 3: So but I think he's been good as of late.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Tackett was Rick was talking to the media and they
- 12:59Speaker 3: asked him about p D and he's like, he's like,
- 13:02Speaker 3: that's all you guys ask me about his PDPD. He's like,
- 13:05Speaker 3: I'm not going to say the wrong thing. You're not
- 13:06Speaker 3: going to catch me shit talking him right now because
- 13:08Speaker 3: I did it last year and I got in trouble.
- 13:10Speaker 3: So he's like, he's like, just let the you know,
- 13:13Speaker 3: and he's kind of saying it rightfully, so like let
- 13:15Speaker 3: the kid be like, let him play, because you know
- 13:17Speaker 3: this team is has all the pieces. But I just
- 13:20Speaker 3: think this could be the best thing for them, is
- 13:22Speaker 3: to get all of this adversity out of the way
- 13:24Speaker 3: because come playoff time, they're a little bit more resilient.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I just think last year they didn't have that where
- 13:29Speaker 3: you look at a Nashville who kind of took him
- 13:32Speaker 3: to the brink there. They went through all that that
- 13:35Speaker 3: garbage and nonsense.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So yeah, let's talk a little money before we get
- 13:39Speaker 1: to Don Grnado.
- 13:40Speaker 2: So we went to Soto off the top.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Nhol CHEMISTRC Gary Bettman announced this week the league's salary
- 13:45Speaker 1: cap at least ninety two point four million dollars next season,
- 13:48Speaker 1: a notable increase from the season's eighty eight million dollars
- 13:50Speaker 1: salary cap and eighty three point five twenty three twenty
- 13:53Speaker 1: four response the news, I mean, listen, the cap is
- 13:56Speaker 1: what is right and it goes up.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That's good news for everybody.
- 13:58Speaker 1: When I want you to this, Jake, because someone says, okay,
- 14:00Speaker 1: the Soto deal, you know, how does it impact on
- 14:02Speaker 1: the sports? Who could be the Soto esque in hockey?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Here's the names for you top free agents this summer,
- 14:08Speaker 1: at least by NHL snais, you're gonna have Mitch Martyr,
- 14:11Speaker 1: Miko Ranton and of course the big ones McDavid and
- 14:13Speaker 1: Capriso eligible free agency in twenty twenty six.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Throw some wild crazy numbers out there for me.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Well, listen, Juan Soto, Like, what is baseball doing? Like
- 14:25Speaker 3: we had It's crazy. We had Don Fair come in
- 14:28Speaker 3: br head of our our br head of PA and
- 14:32Speaker 3: you know, Betman just walked him like a dog and
- 14:35Speaker 3: and we could not get our cap up. Meanwhile he
- 14:37Speaker 3: went to MLB and just the players own the league. Yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 3: it's crazy. He was on belve Donald fit can can
- 14:44Speaker 3: can people fathom that Juan Soto hits three times a game?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Three?
- 14:49Speaker 3: You know for you know, four to five paying in
- 14:51Speaker 3: the game, and he'll be a d H making that
- 14:54Speaker 3: much money. Nuts crazy.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He is a below average defensive out there. Do not
- 15:00Speaker 1: believe this Gold Glube finalist nonsense.
- 15:01Speaker 3: He is a below average base runner.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He's an incredible hit or maybe the best hitter of
- 15:05Speaker 1: the game. It's your point, Oh Tani ten years, seven
- 15:07Speaker 1: hundred million ago. Yeah, but he pitches too, and being
- 15:10Speaker 1: Japanese there's this global appeal and contracts and endorsements and
- 15:13Speaker 1: all the rest of it. So to your point, he's
- 15:15Speaker 1: making sixty five million more just just one thing.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Just like Shohey's generational one is you know, he's you know,
- 15:24Speaker 3: for me, like to categorize somebody who's won so too
- 15:26Speaker 3: eskan hockey, it's somebody that's good, but not like a
- 15:29Speaker 3: mcdy like McDavid caprisof they're gonna get you know, they
- 15:32Speaker 3: should be getting fifteen.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I think fifty.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I think fifteen AAV.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Until eight for one.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I think the cap should be at one hundred, and
- 15:40Speaker 3: I think it's getting there. I think the league has
- 15:42Speaker 3: never been stronger. I think Gary Bettman and them is
- 15:44Speaker 3: and it's not because we're we're sponsored by the NHL.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And I heart but Gary Betman has done a fantastic job.
- 15:49Speaker 3: He's a crazy good businessman. I've sat in some CBA
- 15:53Speaker 3: talks during the lockout and was like, holy crap, this
- 15:56Speaker 3: guy's this guy knows what he's doing. So I think
- 16:00Speaker 3: the league's gonna get to one hundred and and you know,
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think a McDavid it's gonna get. He should be
- 16:06Speaker 3: getting the most of anybody. He is the face of
- 16:09Speaker 3: the league. He will be for another you know, ten years.
- 16:13Speaker 3: He's incredible hockey player. And then you got Caprisov as well,
- 16:16Speaker 3: and I think would probably hard to win the heart
- 16:18Speaker 3: right now, right now, for sure, what he's done, you
- 16:21Speaker 3: cannot deny it.
- 16:22Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:22Speaker 3: The Soto sque contract though, which I'm gonna give to
- 16:25Speaker 3: somebody who's very good but not like the stud is,
- 16:28Speaker 3: Like I think Amico rotten and could get a Soto.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I think if he doesn't stay in Colorado and accept
- 16:33Speaker 3: kind of a little bit less than Nate or Kale,
- 16:36Speaker 3: he can go and get like a thirteen fourteen. I
- 16:38Speaker 3: think he could get something somewhere else because he's you
- 16:41Speaker 3: watch him, he's an absolute horse.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Uh.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He is so strong in the corner, is so good
- 16:47Speaker 3: net front. He's very like he's very much like dry Cidle,
- 16:49Speaker 3: very similar player. I love, you know, that big, kind
- 16:53Speaker 3: of burly guy that can pass, can shoot, can score.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And I think he could get not overpaid because I think,
- 16:59Speaker 3: you know, I think all NHL players are underpaid. It's
- 17:01Speaker 3: just that's that's me being an ex player and wanting
- 17:05Speaker 3: guys to make as much as possible. But I think
- 17:08Speaker 3: he's one of those guys that could get a little
- 17:09Speaker 3: couple extra million that you know, people would be like, oh,
- 17:13Speaker 3: this might not age well, but obviously in the short
- 17:16Speaker 3: term it'll be a great He'd be a great player
- 17:18Speaker 3: to have on your team. So I just think if
- 17:19Speaker 3: he doesn't sign in Colorado, you could see him getting
- 17:21Speaker 3: those numbers for sure.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's a good pick.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Listen, I don't want to do an honor and meeting
- 17:25Speaker 1: right now, but just I know talks to get creative
- 17:27Speaker 1: our producers. So just an idea for future reference, We'll
- 17:30Speaker 1: do a segment called Fear Factor and you.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Tell us Donald fear stories.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Because it sounds like your interpretation was rather underwhelming, So
- 17:37Speaker 1: I look forward to morsto.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I mean, come on, give me a break. Here, look
- 17:40Speaker 3: at what geez, Louise, just look at baseball. You were
- 17:44Speaker 3: a baseball But that's also a credit to how good
- 17:48Speaker 3: Gary Bettman is, because Gary Bettman absolutely put him in
- 17:50Speaker 3: a box and said see you later, and then he's
- 17:53Speaker 3: you know, Gary's still here.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And again we'ren don ain't.
- 17:56Speaker 1: We're not just saying that because we're in partners with NHL,
- 17:59Speaker 1: but it does certainly help still to come here. In
- 18:02Speaker 1: n HL unscripted, the Don Grenade, Don Coronado from GV
- 18:07Speaker 1: to DG. We'll talk coaching with Gronado, what it's like
- 18:10Speaker 1: to coach Austin Matthews.
- 18:11Speaker 2: That's next.
- 18:21Speaker 1: The first ever guest on the inaugural EPs of NHL
- 18:24Speaker 1: in scripted was the kid Marrow.
- 18:25Speaker 2: How do you top it? Second verse even better than
- 18:27Speaker 2: the first. Don Granado is in the house.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen climb the head coaching ranks from the
- 18:31Speaker 1: USHL to the EHL, where we went a Kelly Cup
- 18:34Speaker 1: of the Pueria Riverman to the AHL before finally stimming
- 18:37Speaker 1: his head coach of the Buffalo Savers for three full seasons.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Don is great to see.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I'm sure you're honored. This is something that's going to
- 18:43Speaker 1: be added to that list. You're the second guest ever
- 18:45Speaker 1: here at NHL in scripted.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I will add that to my list. It's a lot
- 18:48Speaker 4: of pressure. I hope I can live up to it
- 18:51Speaker 4: and make sure we addit a lot out. That's all
- 18:53Speaker 4: I'll tell you. How about that?
- 18:54Speaker 3: Okay, let's talk how let's just talk right off the gate?
- 18:57Speaker 3: How bad is the Buffalo Savers? Because now we know
- 18:59Speaker 3: it's not your fault, it's them internally. No, honestly, I
- 19:06Speaker 3: I wanted to ask you a little bit off the.
- 19:07Speaker 4: You're a pain in the ass as a player, and
- 19:09Speaker 4: now you're still a pain in the ass.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what you heard.
- 19:12Speaker 5: You heard.
- 19:12Speaker 2: The rumors are done.
- 19:14Speaker 3: My name, my nickname is locker room lawyer. So it's uh,
- 19:19Speaker 3: I drove coaches crazy. But what I wanted to ask
- 19:21Speaker 3: you is do you find looking at the league right
- 19:24Speaker 3: now and seeing how like at times, how short the
- 19:27Speaker 3: life span is of a coach and how much guys
- 19:30Speaker 3: are under the hot seat?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Quick?
- 19:31Speaker 4: Is that?
- 19:32Speaker 3: Is that changing the way coaching is being approached and
- 19:35Speaker 3: in your eyes and you know, like moving forward with
- 19:37Speaker 3: your career, like next time you get a shot, like
- 19:40Speaker 3: are you going to be have that in mind? Or
- 19:41Speaker 3: is it something that you really just got to block out.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to block it out number one. I
- 19:45Speaker 4: mean I was getting questions about being fired, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: a month and through the true course of the season,
- 19:50Speaker 4: like like every coach does, uh that that you know,
- 19:54Speaker 4: expectations when you're coaching, and you do you do a
- 19:57Speaker 4: good job of coaching, you know, and I look at
- 19:59Speaker 4: different coaches around the league. What you're doing is elevating
- 20:02Speaker 4: expectations the greater. You know, h Andrew Burnett's a perfect case.
- 20:06Speaker 4: He's he's not getting any credit for what he may
- 20:09Speaker 4: have done last year as a coach. Nobody's talking about
- 20:13Speaker 4: what he might have done. And it's because it's intangible.
- 20:15Speaker 4: It's hard, is it? Is it? You know, a lot
- 20:18Speaker 4: of credit has to go to the players. I mean
- 20:20Speaker 4: you automatically have to do that. That's a given. They're
- 20:23Speaker 4: the guys that going into battle. And then it's sort
- 20:26Speaker 4: of like, Okay, how do you measure what the management
- 20:28Speaker 4: team did? How do you measure what the coach did?
- 20:31Speaker 4: But in any event, you're but by if you overachieve
- 20:36Speaker 4: as an organization, you know, that's the new bar for
- 20:40Speaker 4: your fan base, for your media that covers you. You
- 20:44Speaker 4: have to match that or exceed that the next year,
- 20:46Speaker 4: because elevations just just roast. And that's where you see
- 20:50Speaker 4: the coaches fall on the hot seats when when the
- 20:52Speaker 4: expectations rise, Oh we had a good offseason, we are
- 20:56Speaker 4: bringing in three four guys. Expectations are rising by everybody,
- 21:00Speaker 4: and now the coach and the coaching staff has to perform.
- 21:03Speaker 4: So that's just part of the job and you just
- 21:06Speaker 4: have to live with it. And I said to our media,
- 21:09Speaker 4: I kept saying all the time. I was an interim
- 21:10Speaker 4: coach for twenty eight games and the season ended. I
- 21:14Speaker 4: didn't know if I was going to get the job
- 21:16Speaker 4: for about another seven weeks. I didn't get hired till
- 21:18Speaker 4: late June, and I had talked to management for six
- 21:22Speaker 4: seven weeks. I thought I was out by that point
- 21:24Speaker 4: for sure. But the point I want to get back
- 21:27Speaker 4: to is when I was taking interviews as the interim coach,
- 21:30Speaker 4: I said, listen, I'm not going to coach this team
- 21:33Speaker 4: to try to get the head job. That's the wrong
- 21:36Speaker 4: agenda and the wrong objective. I'm I'm going to walk
- 21:38Speaker 4: in this rink today and every day and see what
- 21:41Speaker 4: does this team need in the context of who we're
- 21:44Speaker 4: playing what they need in the context of our competition.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Where are we at based on our comp We can't
- 21:49Speaker 4: tell that in July, but you can tell it right
- 21:51Speaker 4: right away in the when the season starts, and then
- 21:54Speaker 4: the next opponent. So every day I walk in the
- 21:58Speaker 4: office to the rink and I say, Okay, this is
- 22:00Speaker 4: what we have to work with as a coaching staff.
- 22:02Speaker 4: This is what we're going against tomorrow night or the
- 22:05Speaker 4: next night. And you stay in that and you stay focused.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And I can remember getting tons of questions, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 4: the month before I got fired, are you worried about
- 22:14Speaker 4: your job? And I can't worry about my job. I
- 22:16Speaker 4: have to do my job. And and I'm there's coaches
- 22:19Speaker 4: who get fired all the time. I used to watch
- 22:21Speaker 4: as a kid coaches on the bench a lot, and
- 22:24Speaker 4: you could see their faces and their demeanor change, and
- 22:27Speaker 4: some guys, yeah, just before they're gonna get fired. And
- 22:29Speaker 4: I always say, I don't want to be I don't
- 22:31Speaker 4: want to feel that type of pressure just and I
- 22:34Speaker 4: say all this. I have a lot of hindsight at
- 22:36Speaker 4: the age I am. I actually said it many times.
- 22:40Speaker 4: I am really glad I did not get a job
- 22:43Speaker 4: as a head coach head coach in the NHL when
- 22:44Speaker 4: I was in my thirties, I was an American League
- 22:47Speaker 4: head coach of the year, probably two years old. Two
- 22:53Speaker 4: years old. Well, Jace, you know it wasn't me. It
- 22:57Speaker 4: was the team I had.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I yeah, well, I mean your part wise.
- 23:00Speaker 4: It was. I was a young coach, and and I'm
- 23:03Speaker 4: not saying I was a bad coach, but I know
- 23:05Speaker 4: I wasn't some great coach, that's for sure. I was
- 23:09Speaker 4: a first year American League coach. I had amazing support
- 23:12Speaker 4: by a guy named Larry Plow, who was the general
- 23:15Speaker 4: manager of the Saint Louis Blues, and John Ferguson, who
- 23:18Speaker 4: was assistant general manager. The players we had, I had
- 23:21Speaker 4: Dwayne Rolison in that. That doesn't hurt you. You know,
- 23:24Speaker 4: some great, great veteran leadership in the American League. I'm
- 23:29Speaker 4: coach of the year. So now there's talk that I
- 23:32Speaker 4: could be in the NHL head coaching. At the same time,
- 23:36Speaker 4: my brother got promoted as an assistant coach to the
- 23:39Speaker 4: head coach of the Avalanche. And I can remember the call.
- 23:42Speaker 4: He calls me and he says, Donnie, they've just given
- 23:44Speaker 4: me the job. They've fired Bob Hartley and they're asking
- 23:47Speaker 4: me to take over the team. And he's apologetic to
- 23:50Speaker 4: me on the phone because he had literally retired from
- 23:53Speaker 4: San Jose Sharks, had one year out and now three
- 23:57Speaker 4: months on the job as an assistant coach, and now
- 24:00Speaker 4: he's going to be a head coach in Colorado Avalanche
- 24:02Speaker 4: with three months coaching expences. And his apology goes, I'm sorry.
- 24:06Speaker 4: I know this is what you wanted and this is
- 24:08Speaker 4: your you know your goal. And I said, Tony, I
- 24:11Speaker 4: do not envy you right now. I don't worry about me.
- 24:14Speaker 4: You know, I'm not ready for that. And I can
- 24:16Speaker 4: remember having that conversation. So fast forward to me with
- 24:20Speaker 4: the Buffalo Sabers. There's lots of challenges that we had
- 24:23Speaker 4: in Buffalo, and I don't I wouldn't have been able
- 24:25Speaker 4: to handle them at the age of thirty thirty five,
- 24:27Speaker 4: you know, but having the experience I've had, Yeah, you're
- 24:31Speaker 4: gonna get you get bombarded as a head coach. You know,
- 24:33Speaker 4: why is he doing this? Why is he doing that?
- 24:35Speaker 3: I mean, Jason, you said experience one question I wanted
- 24:39Speaker 3: to ask you, and you talked about Brunette as well
- 24:43Speaker 3: in Nashville and being held at those standards and him
- 24:47Speaker 3: last year making sure they didn't go to a YouTube
- 24:50Speaker 3: concert and the boys rattled off a sixteen game winning streak.
- 24:53Speaker 3: What are your thoughts on like guys in a slump
- 24:55Speaker 3: and like right now they've you know, lost eight straight.
- 24:58Speaker 3: They can't find their game, they can't find the net.
- 25:00Speaker 3: It's just like one thing after another. Like, what were
- 25:03Speaker 3: your thoughts on? I played with Jamie Ben and a
- 25:05Speaker 3: couple guys, and honestly, like when you'd be in a
- 25:09Speaker 3: slump like that, sometimes the coach would come up. And
- 25:11Speaker 3: I had some good coaches and they'd be like, Hey,
- 25:13Speaker 3: go out to the bar tonight, go pound about eight
- 25:16Speaker 3: to ten drinks, get completely blacked out drunk, and then
- 25:19Speaker 3: come ready to play tomorrow and play a little guilty.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And it worked a lot of the time, not all
- 25:25Speaker 3: the time, because when you started, really if it's sometimes
- 25:28Speaker 3: it didn't work. But what are your thoughts on that
- 25:30Speaker 3: of like kind of getting guys out of their own
- 25:32Speaker 3: out of their own way and out of their own head.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Are you asking a coach his thoughts and having a
- 25:36Speaker 1: player just get absolutely blitzed?
- 25:37Speaker 4: Like just my thoughts are I have? No No bar
- 25:40Speaker 4: would come to mind first of all, so yeah, but
- 25:44Speaker 4: but no, I think that's very old school.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Jason.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Yeah, we all know that that's very old school. But
- 25:50Speaker 4: the concept, I think is what we could talk about,
- 25:53Speaker 4: the concept of you are trying to take some pressure
- 25:56Speaker 4: off of your player. He's he's fighting it, he's you
- 26:00Speaker 4: know the terms you use, he squeezing his stick. And
- 26:04Speaker 4: you know that the potential they have. You see them struggle,
- 26:08Speaker 4: they fight, and you know they're in their own heads
- 26:12Speaker 4: and you want to you want to do whatever you
- 26:14Speaker 4: can as a coach in those situations when you trust
- 26:17Speaker 4: the player as a competitive guy, he's got the best
- 26:20Speaker 4: interests of the team. He cares about that. Uh, you're
- 26:23Speaker 4: doing everything you can to help that guy. And yes,
- 26:26Speaker 4: it comes down to like just breathe and and Tay
- 26:29Speaker 4: Thompson was a guy in this situation that that you're talking.
- 26:33Speaker 4: It comes to mind right now. I just just think
- 26:35Speaker 4: about this right now. I had Taje and everybody knows
- 26:38Speaker 4: that that it followed the same. But I had him
- 26:39Speaker 4: when he was sixteen at the national team program, and
- 26:42Speaker 4: I saw him and he was a fourth line player
- 26:44Speaker 4: for US at the national team. Him and Troy Terry.
- 26:46Speaker 4: We're on our fourth line. Now ahead of them were
- 26:48Speaker 4: guys like Matthew Could Chuck and Austin Matthews and Jordan
- 26:51Speaker 4: Greenway and Luke Connan and Christian Fisher. We just had
- 26:54Speaker 4: we had depth, Layton Keller and so we had some
- 26:56Speaker 4: amazing players. But I would tell them, Troy and Tage,
- 27:01Speaker 4: I said, listen, you know you're gonna be on the
- 27:02Speaker 4: fourth line and this this is gonna happen. But nobody's
- 27:05Speaker 4: future on this team is any brighter than yours. I
- 27:08Speaker 4: can tell you that they getting a little bit confused
- 27:10Speaker 4: with that. So let's fast forward about five six years later.
- 27:14Speaker 4: I get the job as the head coach in Buffalo
- 27:17Speaker 4: and Taze has yet to emerge. And here's a guy
- 27:21Speaker 4: that I saw. He's a ultra competitive guy. He's willing.
- 27:26Speaker 4: His dad and family raised him right. Brent Thompson had
- 27:30Speaker 4: to work and earn every bit of everything he got
- 27:33Speaker 4: in his career and he had to literally fight for it. Yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 4: and you could see Taje you know raised way that
- 27:41Speaker 4: you know, you work, you sacrifice, and it's going to
- 27:44Speaker 4: pay off. But if you think about that, you work,
- 27:47Speaker 4: you sacrifice, and then the final part is it's going
- 27:50Speaker 4: to pay off. And that is off in the distance. Well,
- 27:54Speaker 4: when you do that every day, every day, you go
- 27:56Speaker 4: to work and you train the way Tay's trained day
- 27:58Speaker 4: after day, and it was accumulated a year after year.
- 28:01Speaker 4: In his mind it was always it's going to pay
- 28:04Speaker 4: off in the distance. I had to convince him that
- 28:07Speaker 4: you're at the distance. Now, I'm in charge of your
- 28:09Speaker 4: ice time, I'm in charge of your situation time. We
- 28:12Speaker 4: shifted him the center. Now is the time you don't
- 28:16Speaker 4: come to work and say it's off in the distance anymore.
- 28:19Speaker 4: That's that's just the psyche that he that I that
- 28:21Speaker 4: I felt he had, and that was the conversation we had.
- 28:25Speaker 4: And it was like, hey, you could score goals. You know,
- 28:28Speaker 4: I can't remember I having a discussion with him. Stop
- 28:30Speaker 4: trying to pick the two inch by two inch corner
- 28:33Speaker 4: of the net. Trust your body, grab the puck and
- 28:36Speaker 4: snap it. Don't think, don't think. Yeah yeah, And and
- 28:40Speaker 4: you know, even last year when he struggled, he got
- 28:43Speaker 4: back in his own head just to how we started, Jason,
- 28:46Speaker 4: it was that was more so now I'm I'm conflicted
- 28:49Speaker 4: of okay, do I do you grind this guy now?
- 28:52Speaker 4: Because it's like, oh my god, I expect more. I
- 28:54Speaker 4: need more. I'm the head coach, I need more out
- 28:56Speaker 4: of tage or do you help this guy? And and
- 28:59Speaker 4: so it's a real challenge. It's a real tedious, delicate situation.
- 29:03Speaker 1: So donal, I'm curious what's happening in Chicago because I
- 29:05Speaker 1: was there for what it ended up being Luke Richardson's
- 29:08Speaker 1: final game Blackhawks in the Maple Leafs and talking to Luke,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I asked him, did you always envision being a coach?
- 29:12Speaker 2: Was this something you wanted to do? And he said yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 2: he said he was interesting.
- 29:15Speaker 1: In Ottawa, you kind of got told otherwise you can
- 29:17Speaker 1: be the assistant associate coach.
- 29:19Speaker 2: You're just not gonna be playing anymore. So it's your call.
- 29:21Speaker 2: So he's like, all right, well that's it for my
- 29:22Speaker 2: playing days.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But I'm fasted by the idea of like a caretaker coach,
- 29:26Speaker 1: a coach who can come in and help a young
- 29:28Speaker 1: team rebuild and then hopefully take them to the next level.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Because I don't necessarily think it's fairly he lost his job.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I know Connor Bedard hasn't been as strong this season
- 29:36Speaker 1: as last year, but what exactly the expectations for the
- 29:38Speaker 1: Blackhawks going in, like how exact is Andrew Soordinson's going
- 29:41Speaker 1: to come in and change whatever Luke Richardson was doing.
- 29:43Speaker 2: So I was curious your take on Chicago, what's happening there?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, you know, the first thing, I know,
- 29:49Speaker 4: any position I've ever gone in and taken over, I
- 29:51Speaker 4: think you you don't want to You want to change
- 29:53Speaker 4: as little, Just change as little as it has to be,
- 29:55Speaker 4: as necessary you want to. Obviously you maybe you want
- 29:57Speaker 4: to impart some of your own. But I think Luke
- 30:00Speaker 4: left a lot of really good things in place, and
- 30:03Speaker 4: Luke built a lot of things. I think when I
- 30:05Speaker 4: was there in Chicago six years ago before I came
- 30:10Speaker 4: to Buffalo, you know, since then, they've lost Tays Caine,
- 30:14Speaker 4: Keith Seabrook in Crawford, they're big five, and those big
- 30:18Speaker 4: five you could lean on as a coach. So when
- 30:20Speaker 4: Luke Richardson went in there, he didn't have those. The
- 30:23Speaker 4: last he had was a bit. He might have had
- 30:25Speaker 4: a bit of Tays and a bit of Patrick Kane,
- 30:27Speaker 4: but so Luke had to do different type of coaching
- 30:30Speaker 4: because he didn't have that type of presence. So I
- 30:32Speaker 4: think Luke brought him a long way implemented a lot
- 30:36Speaker 4: of nice stuff that may not even sink in for
- 30:38Speaker 4: those guys quite yet. But Anders has to come in,
- 30:40Speaker 4: he has to be himself. But I'm certain that he
- 30:43Speaker 4: recognizes plenty of good things that were in place, even
- 30:45Speaker 4: though it's easy to see areas they struggled.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Don I wanted to ask you a little bit of
- 30:50Speaker 3: a family question. You know, that Granado name is you know,
- 30:53Speaker 3: historic in this league and arguably considered the name last
- 30:57Speaker 3: name in the league. And how proud are you of that?
- 30:59Speaker 3: And also how much do you want to cut the
- 31:02Speaker 3: brake lines of like the Hughes family and also the
- 31:04Speaker 3: kad Chucks because you know they're starting to kind of
- 31:07Speaker 3: climb the ranks a little bit here. So what's what's
- 31:09Speaker 3: the family thinking? Is there like a group thread of
- 31:12Speaker 3: the Granado's being like, we got to slow these gotta
- 31:14Speaker 3: slow these SLBs down here?
- 31:16Speaker 4: Yeah? No, not not work very competitive people, but not
- 31:19Speaker 4: in that regard. I can tell you that that's uh,
- 31:22Speaker 4: that's exciting. Uh those guys are I think those those
- 31:26Speaker 4: guys are Cammy, Tony myself. What I'll tell you they're
- 31:29Speaker 4: what they're doing is is amazing. I'm glad We're just
- 31:32Speaker 4: even mentioned, uh uh even in that breath because uh,
- 31:37Speaker 4: you know the Kichucks I had, I had both Brady
- 31:39Speaker 4: and Matthew at the national team program and Jack and
- 31:43Speaker 4: I Quinn also. Uh So it's two great, great families
- 31:46Speaker 4: and proud of both those groups and proud of to
- 31:48Speaker 4: know those moms, dads and players that.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Team you coach, that national team, like the players on
- 31:55Speaker 3: that is absolutely insane. Like were there any that surprised
- 31:58Speaker 3: you or like surpassed your expectations? You mentioned Tage a
- 32:01Speaker 3: little bit, but like any other guys where you were like,
- 32:03Speaker 3: cannot believe the steps he's taken.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah, oh man, there's so many. It's it's there's so
- 32:09Speaker 4: much fun. You know, I just think names from my
- 32:12Speaker 4: head from you know, from like I said, Dempco to
- 32:15Speaker 4: Brady and Matthew could shook to Austin.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 4: It was just fun every day coming to the rink.
- 32:21Speaker 4: You knew in every every week. Then going to the bench.
- 32:25Speaker 4: You'd play typical Friday, Saturday on a weekend and you
- 32:28Speaker 4: literally walk to the bench and say, Okay, how much
- 32:30Speaker 4: better did we get this week? Because you could see,
- 32:33Speaker 4: you know, the improvement at that rate with players that age. Uh,
- 32:37Speaker 4: you know, full engagement obviously, and and uh, just a great,
- 32:41Speaker 4: great experience for me to go there and coach with
- 32:43Speaker 4: the hindsight of already coaching in the American League or
- 32:46Speaker 4: the NHL was a real bonus because you got raw
- 32:49Speaker 4: talent that you have to kind of bring up to
- 32:51Speaker 4: speed coach.
- 32:52Speaker 1: What's something about Austin Matthews you could only appreciate if
- 32:54Speaker 1: you've coached him and seen him the way you have.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Why there's so much to appreciate out of him. But
- 32:59Speaker 4: his hand eye coordination is just insane. And the goalie
- 33:02Speaker 4: scored a night ago the breakaway goal contested breakaway the
- 33:07Speaker 4: entire way and it was a foot race and I
- 33:12Speaker 4: don't know it wasn't an one hundred foot plus foot racer.
- 33:15Speaker 4: One hundred and fifty foot foot race. Yeah, and what
- 33:19Speaker 4: you don't what you don't understand, and Jason could could
- 33:21Speaker 4: appreciate it. You have a guy in your back that's
- 33:24Speaker 4: whacking you and he's just looking for All he needs
- 33:27Speaker 4: is one inch of your stick and the play's done.
- 33:30Speaker 4: And Austin fended it off and guided it off as
- 33:33Speaker 4: he's approaching the goalie and time and space is shrinking
- 33:37Speaker 4: and knew all the potential options intuitively where that puck
- 33:41Speaker 4: had gone the net, based on what the goalie was
- 33:43Speaker 4: going to do when he finally got there, and where
- 33:45Speaker 4: he had the puck sitting when he finally got there.
- 33:47Speaker 4: I was amazed at that stuff with him, that hand
- 33:50Speaker 4: eye coordination and that spatial orientation, you know, where he
- 33:55Speaker 4: didn't know how he was going to beat you. It
- 33:57Speaker 4: was almost like he in that situation the other night.
- 34:00Speaker 4: He waited for the d to go and then okay,
- 34:01Speaker 4: I'll take this because you're taking that, and then he
- 34:03Speaker 4: waited for the at the last instant. I don't know
- 34:05Speaker 4: how I'm gonna beat the goalie yet, but I know
- 34:08Speaker 4: he's going to make a move here and I'm gonna
- 34:10Speaker 4: split second react and put it somewhere else. And you know,
- 34:13Speaker 4: when you watched it, I watch it every day for
- 34:15Speaker 4: two years. You appreciate that I've actually watched a lot
- 34:18Speaker 4: of very talented players that is elite and very unique.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Great stuff. Don Honestly, I appreciate all the insight it's been.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It's been great to hear you reflect, and like Jason
- 34:28Speaker 1: was saying, the coaching community is something that we can
- 34:30Speaker 1: all appreciate because.
- 34:30Speaker 2: It's it's a much harder job than people realize.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Everyone thinks that they can do it, which I'm sure
- 34:34Speaker 1: is like many jobs in the world.
- 34:35Speaker 2: But I appreciate the insight and continued success.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you guys. Thanks for that too, Jason, a
- 34:41Speaker 4: little appreciation. It's always nice to be appreciated.
- 34:43Speaker 3: So oh yah. I mean I've heard so many good
- 34:45Speaker 3: I've heard so many good things from you too, from
- 34:47Speaker 3: the guys Vanni, Hiini, Stroza and and everybody loved you
- 34:51Speaker 3: in Buffalo, so you know, I hope to see you
- 34:53Speaker 3: find something. Yeah, I know. I mean, the Granado's are
- 34:56Speaker 3: all the nicest people, tone everybody. It's it's crazy. You
- 34:58Speaker 3: guys are too nice.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Thanks. Thanks, We don't want that reputation off.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Yeah, start cracking some heads.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Here, see you guys.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It's tough to top the kid Mirro. But Don Gernando,
- 35:16Speaker 1: my man can talk. He's got stories for days.
- 35:19Speaker 2: And I mean it was we could have got an
- 35:21Speaker 2: hour with him.
- 35:22Speaker 3: Oh easily, And now we had our producer was trying
- 35:25Speaker 3: to cut him off and he was giving him. He
- 35:26Speaker 3: was giving him our producer this one, like, hey, let
- 35:30Speaker 3: me finish.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I have new film.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Respect for tal most producers are passive aggressive. Hey coach, Hey,
- 35:36Speaker 1: we're on the room right now. Yeah, it's TV, it's podcast.
- 35:39Speaker 1: It's great at streaming.
- 35:40Speaker 2: We need we need the clicks. God damn it, let's go.
- 35:42Speaker 3: I don't know how you know much is getting censored.
- 35:45Speaker 3: But Tel's got some low hanging fruit there because he
- 35:47Speaker 3: went right at He went right at Donnie g and
- 35:51Speaker 3: took it on the chin as well. Hey, he took
- 35:53Speaker 3: it like a champ. God back on track.
- 35:57Speaker 1: So what I love with the Golden Globe nominations is
- 35:59Speaker 1: there's nerds like me who are like seeing it, seeing it,
- 36:01Speaker 1: seeing it. Haven't seen it on my list. I've got
- 36:03Speaker 1: thirty five screeners. Now this will be going higher on
- 36:06Speaker 1: my list. So, for example, The Brutalist is a film
- 36:08Speaker 1: that's coming out December twentieth. Adrian Brody stars in the film,
- 36:11Speaker 1: and I heard a lot of buzz around it and
- 36:13Speaker 1: I co wait to see.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I watched it last week. I'm like, nice, Golden Globe.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Nominated Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Adrian Brody,
- 36:19Speaker 1: Best Supporting Actor Guy Pierce, Best Supporting Actress Felicity Jones.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And then I look at other films and go, okay,
- 36:24Speaker 1: Amelia perez Is on Netflix Selena Gomez, I'm not really
- 36:27Speaker 1: interested in I'm not being misogynists. It's just a female
- 36:29Speaker 1: all cats, it's a musical bug. Oh, it's got Golden
- 36:31Speaker 1: Globe nominated. It leads Elenis have to see it. And
- 36:34Speaker 1: I realized, Jay, I'm like, I am in such a
- 36:36Speaker 1: minority of one of these people, because I would say
- 36:38Speaker 1: the vast majority of people see Golden Globe nomination, that
- 36:41Speaker 1: go who cares? And I'm wrapped up in this. I'm
- 36:44Speaker 1: making a list. I got notes here, So I'm curious,
- 36:46Speaker 1: where do you land on the spectrum of like I
- 36:48Speaker 1: had it at my calendar. Nine am, Golden Globe nominations
- 36:51Speaker 1: and I'm going through it versus someone who couldn't care less,
- 36:54Speaker 1: And I think you might care a little bit more
- 36:55Speaker 1: only because your wife's an actress and you do get
- 36:57Speaker 1: the screeners like me.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Well, I just love I love how you preface the
- 37:01Speaker 3: non misogyny, even sound agynistic.
- 37:05Speaker 2: But I don't think all female cash and it's a musical.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I'm like, not, that's.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Way, that's that's my wife's that's my wife's. You know,
- 37:12Speaker 3: my wife's said she can sing, dance, and.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Act, she's on Broadly. That's different.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Yeah, shout out, she's on Broadway. She's done Netflix shows
- 37:19Speaker 3: with Kevin James, and she's done a couple of indies.
- 37:21Speaker 3: But she kind of texts me Journey because we're talking
- 37:23Speaker 3: about it, you know, we we we get the films
- 37:25Speaker 3: as well, and she'll watch and she's so into it
- 37:28Speaker 3: and and I very much enjoyed. I grew up watching movies.
- 37:32Speaker 3: We did the old the two uh two for one
- 37:34Speaker 3: day where my dad would buy a ticket to the theater.
- 37:36Speaker 3: We'd go at like ten am and then we'd stay
- 37:39Speaker 3: for four and just Rob the Rob the movie theater,
- 37:42Speaker 3: Blind So and Cineplex Odeon and yeah, reference, thank you
- 37:48Speaker 3: so So. And my brother's like my I grew up.
- 37:51Speaker 3: My brother had just stacks of DVDs, so I watched
- 37:54Speaker 3: like I watch you know Create, you know, uh, Dog
- 37:57Speaker 3: Day Afternoon was like one of my favorite movies. Like
- 37:59Speaker 3: oh yeah, all these old school movies like that Heat
- 38:02Speaker 3: and things like that, and then those are my things.
- 38:04Speaker 3: But my wife was she texted me, she's like she's
- 38:06Speaker 3: like she's like, honestly, have you seen any of the
- 38:09Speaker 3: best picks, Because she's like she's like, it's kind of
- 38:11Speaker 3: funny that half of the movie. She's like, usually the dramas,
- 38:15Speaker 3: it's nothing anybody's heard of except like, you know, the
- 38:18Speaker 3: very big cinephiles.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Yea.
- 38:19Speaker 3: And then everybody's like, oh my god, the Brutalist is one,
- 38:23Speaker 3: and everybody's like like, oh yeah, great, it's like it'll
- 38:27Speaker 3: be out in six weeks, and uh, you've never heard
- 38:29Speaker 3: of anybody in it, but we're give him a golden
- 38:31Speaker 3: gold because it's so political. And I do find you know,
- 38:35Speaker 3: it's very much a back padding society in the movie
- 38:38Speaker 3: industry in terms of, you know, the politics side of it.
- 38:41Speaker 3: But my big snub, and I'm a big fan of
- 38:45Speaker 3: and I think was a little bit junk that is
- 38:48Speaker 3: doomed too not getting a NODV. You say, say it right,
- 38:56Speaker 3: come correct.
- 38:58Speaker 1: He did a film called Also These, which is the
- 39:00Speaker 1: first one to put him on the map and Academy
- 39:02Speaker 1: Award an incredible movie. It was like, oh, he'll become
- 39:05Speaker 1: a dude, Prisoner's Arrival and now Dune and done too.
- 39:08Speaker 3: I mean, he's it's such a fantastic movie and the
- 39:12Speaker 3: cinematography and I mean it's winning all these other awards
- 39:14Speaker 3: and I'm like, well, who put it all together to
- 39:17Speaker 3: goddamn director. So give Danny Vanieve his due. So that's
- 39:22Speaker 3: my sumb And then I saw you see Josh Brolin
- 39:24Speaker 3: came out and was like, if he doesn't get nominated
- 39:26Speaker 3: for a director, he's quitting acting. Yeah, because he thinks
- 39:29Speaker 3: he deserves it. And then Danny Villenev said, I'll punch
- 39:31Speaker 3: him in the face if he quits acting. So seeah,
- 39:34Speaker 3: I pay attention the.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Six nominees Doom Part two. You've heard of Nickel boys,
- 39:38Speaker 1: You have no idea what it is. I have the
- 39:39Speaker 1: screen September fifth, Yeah, September fifth, I have the screener.
- 39:43Speaker 1: It's about the nineteen seventy two Munich and it's viewed
- 39:46Speaker 1: for the lens of television.
- 39:47Speaker 2: No one's seen it.
- 39:48Speaker 1: The Brutalist, which I mentioned, which is Great Conclave, which
- 39:51Speaker 1: is a bunch of popes trying to find a new pope.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Ray finds his great and it's Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I don't think many people have seen it. And then
- 39:57Speaker 1: the one that helps finding a pope, right, and then
- 39:59Speaker 1: your best point, which is that the movies haven't been
- 40:02Speaker 1: out yet, so do you see the nominias?
- 40:03Speaker 2: You go, oh, I can't wait.
- 40:04Speaker 1: We're is it and this we have talking about it
- 40:05Speaker 1: is a complete unknown the Bob Dylan bio pick.
- 40:08Speaker 2: It's not out till Christmas Day. You know, great, I
- 40:11Speaker 2: have to wait two weeks to watch this.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, more Golden Globe nominations will be coming down the pike,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and we will talk about the snub of John M.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Chew for director for Wicked.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Oh crazy, that's that's a crazy one too.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I can't hit you on this. Let's talk about John Tortorella.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Torts gets fired up. Okay, the Flyers lose.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Four to three time the Bruins on Saturday. That came
- 40:29Speaker 2: was on NHL Network. By the way, e J.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Raddick with the call always fantastic speaking of Granada and Tony.
- 40:36Speaker 3: That's electric.
- 40:37Speaker 2: That's like e J.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Raddick is electric. Just but I believe he's think about it,
- 40:43Speaker 3: like you want to talk guy that can spin a yarn.
- 40:45Speaker 3: You get him in the office before a show.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Eachian all time great storyteller.
- 40:49Speaker 3: I'm obvious sitting there and trying to do work. I'm
- 40:50Speaker 3: going on an hour and he'll just go talk for
- 40:52Speaker 3: the whole hour with me working and just he'll just
- 40:55Speaker 3: keep He'll just keep he just goes right through. Don't matter.
- 40:59Speaker 3: I'm like, I just you know, I'm going on in
- 41:00Speaker 3: an hour each I love these stories. But and then
- 41:03Speaker 3: just just bulldozer.
- 41:05Speaker 2: It just blows through stuff.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he does what Don Granado did tell it, Yes,
- 41:10Speaker 3: burries up.
- 41:11Speaker 2: All right here is towards pretty pissed after this one.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Yeah, let me start.
- 41:16Speaker 5: Okay, one thing I teach my team to do is
- 41:20Speaker 5: not dive. Maybe I should start teaching him that. The
- 41:24Speaker 5: way this has gone here, the way goes on, maybe
- 41:27Speaker 5: I should start teaching them how to dive. Obviously, penalty
- 41:30Speaker 5: is a factor today, but five on five where you're
- 41:32Speaker 5: happy with the body of work, especially in the first piew,
- 41:34Speaker 5: we played our ass off. Yes, I thought we played
- 41:37Speaker 5: really well.
- 41:37Speaker 4: When you feel like that, like you just said, you
- 41:39Speaker 4: know that it was comments, you mean, what does it
- 41:41Speaker 4: mean to you, especially defending your guys like that, that
- 41:44Speaker 4: you feel like maybe something will stolen from you guys tonight. Yeah.
- 41:47Speaker 5: I'm not gonna go too deep into it. I just
- 41:49Speaker 5: I it's one of the things we talk about most
- 41:51Speaker 5: as a team. We're gonna play an honest game. There's
- 41:54Speaker 5: no cheating, there's no embarrassing referees. You don't embarrass the referees,
- 41:59Speaker 5: and that went on here tonight is just ridiculous. So
- 42:02Speaker 5: I'm proud of the way our team play. We kiss
- 42:04Speaker 5: another one away, yeah, but other people had a little
- 42:07Speaker 5: bit to do with that also.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I mean, Meetchkoff dived in that game too. That's the
- 42:12Speaker 3: funniest thing with Charlie McAvoy. That's the best part of it.
- 42:15Speaker 3: It's like, I teach my guys not to dive. Meechkoff
- 42:17Speaker 3: dived twice in one play like tour. I love it.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I mean there's a couple of dives, but I mean,
- 42:23Speaker 3: you gotta love towards He's just candid and and you
- 42:26Speaker 3: know everything I've heard about he he'll beat you down,
- 42:29Speaker 3: but he does protect the players. Yeah, and he does
- 42:33Speaker 3: take care of those guys. So it's like it's good
- 42:35Speaker 3: to see a coach it as your back. But I mean, yeah,
- 42:37Speaker 3: the diving in the NHL is the the head the
- 42:41Speaker 3: head snap in and listen. I've I've partaken or partook
- 42:45Speaker 3: whatever the verbage. Partook. I partook, I like partaking, but
- 42:51Speaker 3: part I partook in the diving culture on a few occasions.
- 42:54Speaker 3: But I mean it wasn't like it is now. We
- 42:57Speaker 3: just don't want to get to soccer, and I think,
- 42:59Speaker 3: you know, if we get into the soccer side of it,
- 43:01Speaker 3: it'll be real ugly. But listen, it's a fast game
- 43:03Speaker 3: and some times the refs can't see everything.
- 43:06Speaker 1: There was also a point about Torch was as supposed
- 43:08Speaker 1: to about Mitch Cough.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the front unner for the Colder.
- 43:11Speaker 1: The guy's been awesome, but he signed a water bottle
- 43:13Speaker 1: after getting booted from the game versus Gutah tows a
- 43:16Speaker 1: lot of much to say, but you get the sense
- 43:18Speaker 1: he probably wasn't crazy about it.
- 43:19Speaker 2: A guy sawi a water bottle.
- 43:21Speaker 3: He kind of was, like I watched it. He kind
- 43:23Speaker 3: of was like he asked like three times. He's like,
- 43:25Speaker 3: wait a minute, when did he do this? And they're
- 43:28Speaker 3: like when he left the ice and he's like no, no,
- 43:30Speaker 3: but like what did he do exactly? Like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:34Speaker 3: But I actually love it because you could see him
- 43:36Speaker 3: kind of like trying not to laugh because I mean,
- 43:38Speaker 3: this kid's got almost a point of game. Like, this
- 43:41Speaker 3: kid's been unbelievable for this team, and I mean they're
- 43:45Speaker 3: feisty and in it, and you know, he kind of
- 43:49Speaker 3: he kind of kind of you know, gave him a
- 43:50Speaker 3: little bit of a of a whack early on and
- 43:53Speaker 3: scratched him for a couple of games. But I mean,
- 43:55Speaker 3: he's he's such a great player, and I just think
- 43:57Speaker 3: it's funny. This kid barely speaks any English, and it's
- 43:59Speaker 3: just like I signed water Bot.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, Well, one thing that translates is the tenure
- 44:04Speaker 1: in of ustry one of the great moments in sports
- 44:06Speaker 1: and entertainment history, which is what we're trying to do
- 44:07Speaker 1: here in NHL.
- 44:08Speaker 2: In scripted and referring.
- 44:09Speaker 1: To the hit holiday classic Holiday Sweater performed by then
- 44:13Speaker 1: members of the sand Day Sharks, including our very own Jasons.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, tis the holiday season and here in Sharks
- 44:20Speaker 4: territory it's freezing.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Very reason rock I looked so fine. I looked so sexy,
- 44:39Speaker 3: even with my face stashed up on the flexity. When
- 44:41Speaker 3: it snows all the weather gets sweat, I just split out.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Come to your house for it.
- 44:50Speaker 2: So what did that sound like?
- 44:51Speaker 3: Let me let me see your I stay for a
- 44:54Speaker 3: little cypress hill there.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Oh that's great too.
- 44:56Speaker 3: I want to hear the Cypress hill.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty good. That's a good.
- 45:01Speaker 3: One of the great rhymes of all time, you know.
- 45:05Speaker 2: And listen, it's tough to top that.
- 45:07Speaker 1: We could appreciate that, But what do you make of
- 45:09Speaker 1: the fact of Sharks, a team with whom obviously you're
- 45:11Speaker 1: close to. They're trying to recapture that magic now with
- 45:13Speaker 1: Holiday Inflatables hell of a title, as Pamela Anderson, by
- 45:17Speaker 1: the way, is nominated for a Golden Globe for a
- 45:19Speaker 1: film called The Last Showgirl.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Speaking of inflatables, go ahead.
- 45:25Speaker 3: There he is. I've been waiting. We finally uncorked him
- 45:28Speaker 3: episode two with five minutes left, fantastic one. I like it. Actually,
- 45:34Speaker 3: it's it's good. Listen. I'm impartial to the original, and
- 45:38Speaker 3: I just think it was we were ahead of our time.
- 45:40Speaker 3: You think I was ten years ago and we were
- 45:42Speaker 3: just ripping that. And this one was good too. And
- 45:45Speaker 3: the funniest part about the whole thing is I got
- 45:47Speaker 3: traded before it ever got released, and then Mackenzie Blackwood
- 45:51Speaker 3: got traded before it was released. So there's like a
- 45:53Speaker 3: curse of the Holiday Sweater. So the next one they
- 45:57Speaker 3: do in ten years, someone's getting dealt and poor McKenzie.
- 46:00Speaker 3: You know, I'm I like, I think I remember it
- 46:03Speaker 3: was like two days before I got trade and I'm
- 46:04Speaker 3: just out there like, you know, I'm one of the boys, sharks.
- 46:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:07Speaker 3: And then they're like, hey, come on in the room
- 46:10Speaker 3: here we traded. Yeah, yeah, was that it was my wrap?
- 46:13Speaker 3: Not that good. They're like, this guy can't can't put
- 46:16Speaker 3: a rhyme together, just no no coordination whatsoever. He's enjoying
- 46:20Speaker 3: this too much show.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Thank you so much for listening to Inscripted.
- 46:23Speaker 1: On the next episode, I can tease for you, Tal
- 46:26Speaker 1: is going to be available. Our producer is finally going
- 46:28Speaker 1: to be unveiled. Oh, Tal Pinchewski will not only be
- 46:31Speaker 1: seen but also heard.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Plus I've got a lot.
- 46:33Speaker 1: More on Dog Day Afternoon. You had me on this
- 46:35Speaker 1: soon as you mentioned, trust me, I will never aka
- 46:39Speaker 1: aka I'll tell you the origin of where Patina came
- 46:41Speaker 1: up with that. On the next episode of an HL Inscripted,
- 46:45Speaker 1: I look so fun.
- 46:46Speaker 3: I looked so sexy even with my face snet up
- 46:49Speaker 3: on the FLEXI. When it snows all the weather gets sweat,
- 46:52Speaker 3: I just slipped out my holiday.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Come to your house for a holiday.
