- 0:00It's hard to win on the road, but you
- 0:01know, we put ourselves in position in a
- 0:03lot of different ways to come out here
- 0:04and, you know, win this game against,
- 0:06you know, ranked opponent and um, you
- 0:09know, just camp short. So, um,
- 0:13yeah, just got the questions.
- 0:19>> Coach, can you just talk about the
- 0:23>> Yeah, I mean, we always want to talk
- 0:24about our lack of size and, you know,
- 0:26all those things. This team's top 10 in
- 0:28the nation and rebounding. We got out
- 0:29rebounded him by 15. So, um thought
- 0:32thought Philip was a phenomenal spark
- 0:34off the bench. Um you know, 10 rebounds,
- 0:36five offensive, five defensive, and you
- 0:38know, really was a spark. He was plus
- 0:40five in the plus minus. Um did a lot of
- 0:42really good things for us. So, you know,
- 0:44Philip is incredibly effective in in
- 0:46those areas cuz he just plays hard as
- 0:47[ __ ] and you know that we need more of
- 0:50that. you know, he's got an identity and
- 0:52um his identity is to play hard and to
- 0:54win and we we need more of that from
- 0:56from guys on this team to have a
- 0:58toughness identity because Philip's got
- 1:00it.
- 1:00>> Nathan,
- 1:02>> obviously you talked this week about
- 1:03guard driven approach for them trying to
- 1:05get downhill. How would you evaluate how
- 1:06you guys did defensively with them?
- 1:08>> Yeah, horrible. Um our one-on-one
- 1:10defense is terrible. we just
- 1:13continuously work on it and we let guys
- 1:15drive right around us and at some point
- 1:16we got to have an identity and I'm
- 1:18always going to look within first and
- 1:20I'm always going to figure out what I
- 1:21can do better to help us on the
- 1:23defensive side. Um but at some point our
- 1:26guys have to have a level of pride that
- 1:28they're not going to let their guy just
- 1:29continuously line them up and drive
- 1:30right around them. Uh there's nothing
- 1:32that you know we can do from a schematic
- 1:34standpoint unless we just completely
- 1:36sell out and just give up wide open
- 1:37threes at some point. like you got to
- 1:40you got to, you know, you got to have a
- 1:42little bit of pride in, you know, not
- 1:43letting those guards go for 31 and 24.
- 1:46And it's not the threes I'm I'm I'm as
- 1:48concerned about. A couple of them were
- 1:49scout specific that we we got up out of
- 1:51our stance. Wilkinson hit some really
- 1:53tough ones. I'm more concerned about
- 1:55just the one-on-one drives where they
- 1:57just get into the paint and there's no
- 2:00rim protection because we know we don't
- 2:02have that and they just are able to
- 2:03score two is because we either reach or
- 2:05we open up the gate too much. So, you
- 2:07know, my biggest challenge for our guys
- 2:08was like, you know, we got to have more
- 2:10of an identity defensively in our
- 2:11one-on-one defense because I can sit
- 2:14here and scheme and talk about different
- 2:15coverages, but at the end of the day,
- 2:17like, you know, we we we did a lot of
- 2:18switching. We ran a lot of zone. All
- 2:20they did was just get the ball into a
- 2:22guard's hand and then just attack us
- 2:23one-on-one, and we just weren't able to
- 2:25keep them in front. So, we just, you
- 2:27know, I'm always going to figure out
- 2:28what I can do better. But my team's got
- 2:30to do a better job of finding their
- 2:31identity defensively and taking some
- 2:33accountability in their one-on-one
- 2:34defense because I can't go out there and
- 2:36guard for them.
- 2:38>> All those shots, how tough was it to not
- 2:40have it, you know, in overtime those
- 2:42those last couple minutes as well the
- 2:44second half?
- 2:45>> I mean, it has nothing to do with our
- 2:47offense, everything to do with our
- 2:48defense. So, um, you know, we just we
- 2:50just didn't defend late. We fouled too
- 2:52much. So, um,
- 2:55no, I mean, we've always just played
- 2:58next man up and, um,
- 3:02yeah, I mean, he he he was three for 11
- 3:05from three. So, um, you know, would have
- 3:08been nice to have another ball handler
- 3:09on the floor, but at the same time,
- 3:10that's just, you know, part of
- 3:11basketball. And, you know, we talked
- 3:13about not having silly fouls, and we had
- 3:15a lot of silly fouls, and that led to
- 3:16him not being able to play in overtime.
- 3:18So, um, you know, Ke did a pretty good
- 3:21job at the at the point. Um, you know,
- 3:24we got we it was a two-point game and
- 3:26he's in the post one-on-one and no one
- 3:28on the backside moves and they all just
- 3:29stand there and look and there's nowhere
- 3:31for him to pass the ball. So, you know,
- 3:33um, our execution late just wasn't great
- 3:36offensively. We we got into the space
- 3:37and the place that we wanted to. We just
- 3:39didn't do a good job of getting to the
- 3:41right spots on the floor off the ball.
- 3:45>> Talk about Tom. Can you talk about the
- 3:46decision for him to come off the bench?
- 3:47And then Murphy as well. It seemed like
- 3:49he was kind of bothered by something in
- 3:51the second half. Was he not 100% even
- 3:53when he came back late in the game?
- 3:54>> I mean, Philip was plus five in the plus
- 3:56minus. So, you know, he was just really
- 3:59good. So, I'm not, you know, that's
- 4:00that's why Philip was out there. Um, you
- 4:03know, he just had great energy and did a
- 4:05good job in his one-on-one defense for
- 4:07the most part and, you know, contested
- 4:09shots at the rim. He got vertical as
- 4:10much as he possibly could and he had
- 4:12five offensive rebounds. ly he was just
- 4:13too valuable to be out there to not be
- 4:15out there, excuse me. And then, you
- 4:16know, Todd, you know, it was a coach's
- 4:19decision. You know, he it was a failure
- 4:20to meet our team, you know, standards
- 4:22and expectations. And, um, you know,
- 4:26Tahad's got to do a better job of
- 4:27leading by example. And it's something
- 4:29that we just continuously talk about.
- 4:30And until he does those things off the
- 4:33court, he's going to, you know, he's got
- 4:35to stop putting me in these positions
- 4:36where I have to make difficult
- 4:37decisions. And that's part of growth and
- 4:39that's part of learning, you know. um we
- 4:41made the decision yesterday and he had a
- 4:43great practice in response to it
- 4:44yesterday. Um but you know it's he he's
- 4:48got some things he's got to fix and if
- 4:50he's not going to live up to those
- 4:51expectations and that's to all of them.
- 4:53You know we told everybody when we got
- 4:55back from Purdue like we're just you
- 4:56know we're just going to tighten things
- 4:57up a little bit. Uh guys need to be on
- 4:59time and guys need to do the things that
- 5:01we're asking them to do and if they
- 5:02don't you'll you'll come off the bench
- 5:03or you'll lose a rotation. So uh we got
- 5:06a standard. We have an expectation in
- 5:07this program and it's going to be
- 5:08upheld. Anything else to go?
