- 1:15bring you another series for which we only have one episode, and to be
- 1:21honest, I don't know how long it remained on the air, though it
- 1:25couldn't have been too long, as eight months later it star was auditioning to
- 1:30appear in another program. The title of the program was hit Here Comes McBride,
- 1:37and it starred Frank Lovejoy, who two months before had ended his run
- 1:42on The Amazing Mister Malone after two years in that character, with the series
- 1:49being pulled and replaced with Pat Novak for Hire, which we'll hear on Tuesdays
- 1:53in just a few weeks. Here Comes McBride was from a series of books
- 1:59by Cleave Adams, though, as we'll talk about after the show, the
- 2:04books didn't have a whole lot of impact in how the story was told.
- 2:08So here from May nineteenth is nineteen four of nineteen forty nine is Here Comes
- 2:15McBride. Here Comes McBride mac listen short for one hundred thousand dollars told them

- 3:32miss McBride, I'm Susan. Hello is mister mcgilli carry the hotel manager?
- 3:36Fine, miss McBride. Two minutes ago you telephoned down to the guest.
- 3:39Susan here took your call. You said you wanted a policemen. That's
- 3:43right. Why I mean, if there's been a disturbance of any sort,
- 3:46commanding him both of them tay a look that guy in the chair, wouldn't
- 3:52you want to police him? He did? That's right? Oh, oh
- 3:55my god, Oh fine, great time to kill over. That's mister seven
- 4:01the dead man. Yes, who's mister seven fourteen? Well, look he
- 4:05isn't in five fourteen now he's in four fourteen and four fourteen is my room.
- 4:11That's what I wanted to see the policeman about. Maybe better sprinkle a
- 4:14few smelling saws on poor mister McGillicutty here. Oh my, almost forgot mister
- 4:17mcgiller. Cuddy, mister McGillicuddy, Well, don't just stand there. Get
- 4:21some water for it. Not me. I've already got fingerprints on the door
- 4:25knob, the light, switching the phone. That's enough, all right,
- 4:28I'll get it. Myself. You say this dead guy lived in five or
- 4:30fourteen. Huh that's directly over this room. Yes, okay, you better
- 4:34stay here and give mcgilli cutty a little artificial respiration. I'm going upstairs and
- 4:39take a look. Where do you think you're going? Well upstairs, if
- 4:45it's all right with you, it isn't. Well, that's too bad,
- 4:47And I suppose you keep your big nolse out of my big nose belong here
- 4:50police, Oh for my mistake. Captain, you're a mistake again. It's
- 4:56lieutenant, Lieutenant or saddie. That's your room you just came out of.
- 5:00Yeah, and it's also the room where the dead man is. Yeah,
- 5:05come on, mister. As soon as we threw him there, I want
- 5:09to talk to you. Well. Mc red We've got your room all tidy
- 5:21to you again. Now do you care to add anything to your story?
- 5:26There's nothing more to add us. Sorry for the third time. I went
- 5:29out to dinner tonight, I left word at the dead gotta back at eight.
- 5:31About five after I came in, came up to my room, opened
- 5:33the door. There's this seven sitting in the chair, stabbed. That's when
- 5:36I found the polie. You were going upstairs when I stopped you, Where
- 5:40were you heading back to his room to see if you'd left anything. Look,
- 5:44if you're trying to insinuate eye chilled, you're a pretty likely suspects right
- 5:46now. Oh sure, sure. I stabbed seven up in his room,
- 5:49then carried his body down here, so nobody suspect me. Sounds real logical,
- 5:55doesn't it. You'd either be pretty stupid or pretty smart to work it
- 5:58like that, And I don't think you're stupid, Thank you McBride. That
- 6:01suitcase in the corner is yours, isn't it? Yeah, somebody slashed the
- 6:05side of it. I noticed that. I also noticed the gun in it.
- 6:09It's mine and I have a license for it. A sunny you like
- 6:12the hunt. I'm an insurance detective. Oh I see, No, you
- 6:15don't see. I came to Frisco on and Francisco. Okay, okay,
- 6:20I came here on business. You're from La Los Angeles? Oh yeah,
- 6:26we heard you in town. What kind of business are you here? On?
- 6:30I don't have to tell you that. We got to complain from a
- 6:31guy named Chandler about you, Cyrus Chandler. He claims you've been following him
- 6:35and his family. Isn't that the same Chandler who reported the theft of a
- 6:39diamond necklace down in Los Angeles? That's right? You know, I don't
- 6:45get it, Nick Bride. If you're trying to recover the necklace, why
- 6:48are you following them? Did I say I was following them? Will you
- 6:53manute? You? Maybe figure one of them faked the theft to collect the
- 6:57insurance. Look for Sadi. I'll make a deal with you. You worry
- 7:00about the dead man, I'll worry about the chandler's And then the Chandler's happened
- 7:03to be our worry right now too. Oh so this ward of his what's
- 7:09her name? Celeste? Yeah, she's pretty wild. Oh yeah, she's
- 7:13done pretty well already. She's gotten herself in a couple of scrapes and bars.
- 7:15It's got Chandler funny to get her out of them. I guess she
- 7:18hasn't changed. Oh yeah, and another thing. As a gambler named Sean
- 7:23O'Hara came into town a few days ago. We've been keeping an eye on
- 7:26him. You know her, didn't Chandler's wife used to run around with him?
- 7:30Did she? I wonder if missus Chander lost money to ohera interesting though.
- 7:41You're talking. I'm listening. Okay, play it your way. So
- 7:46a guy named Severn turns up in your hotel room? Did? By the
- 7:49way, how do you happen to get a room in this joined? Anywhere?
- 7:53You want to read the papers? There's a convention in town. I
- 7:55couldn't get any reservations. Cab driver told me the Tropan Hotel wasn't too bad.
- 8:00He was so wrong, May Bride. Maybe you're telling the truth and
- 8:03maybe you're not. Sooner or later we'll find out which we'll want you at
- 8:07the end quest and in the meantime, don't be too hard to find.
- 8:11You know. San Francisco is a nice town. Stay in it? Isn't
- 8:28the regious roof store of an expensive place for a poor struggling detective to take
- 8:31a girl to din? The Mislip brad expense account Susan, Oh, what
- 8:35item do I come under? I think it's I'm sure you will. I
- 8:41could put it under special occasions. Maybe isn't every day I find a dead
- 8:46guy in my room and meet you? Yeah, mister, I'm afraid the
- 8:50Trojan Hotel has not a very nice place. How did you ever happen to
- 8:54get a job and a joint like that. Oh, I don't really work
- 8:56there, I understay a part time. See. I worked for a book
- 9:00keeping service and the Trojan Hotel is one of our accounts. As far as
- 9:03I'm concerned, the company can cross it off their list anytime, except mister
- 9:07mcgilli carry. I've always rather liked mister McGillicuddy. Yes does he? Oh,
- 9:13now that's not fair. See do you know that man over there,
- 9:20the stocky, gray haired man at the corner table. He hasn't taken his
- 9:24eyes off you all through dinner. His name is O'Hara, Sean O'Hara.
- 9:28No, who's he? Gambler and started other enterprises you name it, he's
- 9:33done. It sounds interesting, befaul, Yes, who is that? All
- 9:35right? I beg your pardon, mister Brian. Yes, I believe you
- 9:41asked at the desk by the room at this hotel. Yeah, they told
- 9:43me no soap. You may have one now if you like. Well I
- 9:48like. But how come mister Shaan O'Hare is turning his room over to you.
- 9:52Well that's very kind, as lister O'Hara, he wanted to know if
- 9:54you step over to his paper for a minute. Okay, I guess excuse
- 9:58me. He must be quite a friend of your. Yes, yes,
- 10:03he must be. Well, it looks like the party is complete. The
- 10:07Chandler family just came in. And who are the Chandler Oh, there's friend
- 10:11of mine. I'll be back in a minute soon. Excuse me, please
- 10:16thank McBride. Whoa well, mister Chandler and missus Chandler. This is a

- 10:31I don't know about the other's Rick mcbrian, you deliberately followed us here
- 10:35for me. I'm just hearing a pleasure. I warn you if you persist
- 10:39in your ridiculous suspicions that any of us take the fact that Missus Chandler's necklace
- 10:43islands, your temper is showing Chandler and missus Chandler. So lest if you'll
- 10:48excuse me, and as someone I have to see Sean o'harris. Oh yes,
- 10:52sir, Missus Chandler. Remember what I said, McBride. I'll be
- 10:54seeing you. Don't forget that drink later. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 10:58so long now, I'm not going to SPAMD for this any longer. It's
- 11:01not my fault to be following us, Sara, Are you sure that it's
- 11:05as following boy? Hello, o'harah. On McBride's I ran in with an
- 11:11old friend of yours on the way to your table just now, Delilah Chandler,
- 11:16I saw her. Thanks for the room. I didn't give it to
- 11:18you for nothing. Yeah, I figured that. What do you want?
- 11:22McBride? You're trying to recover the Chandler's nextlik where'd you hear? Then?
- 11:26I got big ears? Hell, I don't show must be the way you
- 11:28comb your haird So what about the chandeler necklace? You work for an insurance
- 11:33company? Tou'd be glad to pay a considerable amount of money to get it
- 11:35back, maybe as high as twenty five thousand. Those big ears are showing
- 11:41now, o'harah. How'd you arrive at that? For you? Never mind?
- 11:46Closesn't maybe trying to tell me you've got the nextnik. I think you
- 11:50know better than that, but I might be able to put you on the
- 11:52trail of him. What do you get out of him? Simple? Twenty
- 11:54five thousand? How about it. I don't know. I don't know.
- 11:58You have to have some time to think it over. I can't give you
- 12:01much tells. I know what I mean. Enough, Okay, Look,
- 12:05I'm running a little place down of the peninsula. It's an old house off
- 12:07by it felt you gotta lay out there, small one, A couple of
- 12:11crap tables in the wheels. Here's the address. You'll be down there at

- 12:28whoa, it's a good thing I didn't hold my breast for that just minutes
- 12:33you were gone. I'm sorry so long ter. That's all right. Matter
- 12:35of fact, they had quite an interesting time. Oh. Those three people
- 12:39who stopped you when you got up from the table had an argument after you
- 12:43left them up. They seem to think you've been following them. They were
- 12:48pretty mad about it all, except the younger of the women, the run
- 12:52with the sunny eyes light drown sort of sort of like a check. Oh
- 12:56no, but I mean, and she also had or there were strange eyes.
- 13:03Yeah, that that would be celest. She didn't seem at all mad
- 13:07that you were following them. Yeah, that would be Celest. She's a
- 13:09chandler's work. She inferred. You've been following her quite a while. You
- 13:13wouldn't have to follow Selest quite a while. Oh my here all this time,
- 13:18I thought you had brought me here to be with me. The strong
- 13:22unions, they demand pleasant working conditions for she wanted that. Oh it sort
- 13:26of crowded. Why don't we go to my place? We could have a

- 13:33Go min, that's a prognant you've got here. Thanks about to drink?
- 13:46What would you like? Hey? You come here? Got or maybe
- 13:56driven? Keep going? You haven't come to it yet. That's nice.

- 14:09and Arthur Medgiller cutting? Oh you mean fainting Freddy. I like Authur.
- 14:13He's very nice. I'm sure then, Well, I and they got better

- 14:22if I think there's one left? Yes here you call that a cigarette?
- 14:26Where have you been keeping it in your shoe? My last one? And
- 14:30I forgot to get in in this afternoon. Rex, there's a stand right
- 14:33across this cheek. Oh no, look, it's midnight. They're not gonna
- 14:35send me out into that fog when it's so comfortable here. I will normally
- 14:39take five minutes, and i'll have the drinks ready when you get bad.
- 14:43Besides, I think you could use a little cold here anyway. Okay,
- 14:46i'll get the cigarettes, but i'll give you a coal. I don't think
- 14:50five minutes i'll make much difference. Hey, ah, mister, two packs
- 15:05thirty six? Then okay, thanks? Real fog tonight, huh Yeah,

- 15:37have I been out? Almost fifteen minutes. I think you hit your head
- 15:39when you dove with the sidewalk. Yeah, that was really a close one.
- 15:43I didn't even see the car, so it was almost on you.
- 15:45You know, guys who drive like that shouldn't be allowed out on a foggy
- 15:48night. You happen to get a look at him? No, no,
- 15:50he didn't even slow down. He was driving a green ash but I didn't
- 15:52see his face. Why, oh, no, no reason, thanks to
- 15:56learn. Where or where did you go for the cigarettes? Oakland? Yeah?
- 16:08Just about giving you up wick. What's the matter with your head?

- 16:52here at the Regions. I just had to talk to you. That's on
- 16:56your mind? Well, to McBride, I know you suspect the sept that
- 17:02my necklace was arranged by one of us. Well well, as far as
- 17:04my husband and myself are concerned, it's not true. But as the Celeste,
- 17:10I'm not. Oh well, that's interesting. He never cared very much
- 17:14for your husband's ward, have you? But she's caught out nothing but trouble.
- 17:18She's wild, She gets into scrapes and we have to pay for them.
- 17:21And that's not the worst of us. What is the worst of us?
- 17:23She's been making a play for my husband I'm sure of it. Really,
- 17:27I don't know what it is with her. She's all twisted around inside.
- 17:32It's a complex. Everything I have. She wants require you telling me
- 17:37always, well, because I think she took my neglorok And I want you
- 17:42to search her room. You know she might object. She's not there now,
- 17:47I'll come. We don't know where she is. The last we saw
- 17:49it was about eleven o'clock last night. She's probably out on what she calls
- 17:52a party. Please such a room? Well, I don't know. It
- 17:56means a lot to me. Well, I mean, I mean if it
- 18:00would help clear? Say you up. Incidentally, do you know anyone who
- 18:04drives a green nash? No? I don't skip it. Okay, I'll
- 18:11take a look at celestial. Have you got the king? No? But
- 18:14I can get it. You go ahead, I'll stop rying about ten minutes.
- 18:18Yeah, let me well, mister mcgillicut, all right, I beg
- 18:22your pardon. What are you doing in the hall? I came here to
- 18:26see you, mister McBride, but I didn't know you would entertain girly business.
- 18:30Mister mcgilli cutty, I'll see you in a few minutes. Missus champion,
- 18:33come in mcgilly cuddy. But down your mind, I have to get
- 18:40to pay my bill, and I checked out of the Trojan, Miss McBride.
- 18:42Perhaps I arrived at an embarrassing time, but I must say it confirms
- 18:45my opinion. What opinion? That's what I came to talk about. Susan
- 18:49has apparently taken an interest in you. Oh good. Susan is a nice
- 18:53girl, Miss McBride. You may not be interested in that phase of her
- 18:57character, but she is an skirl and I'm sure of it. I'm very
- 19:02fond of that. I've always thought that one day i'd ask you to well
- 19:07what I mean, you're very fond of it, But I'm not going to
- 19:10stand biat you're made unhappy by a man of your type? My type?
- 19:14What is my type? Just now with a perfect illustration, A lady leaving
- 19:18your room at eight in the morning. Yeah, that does look better,
- 19:21to say nothing of the notoriety you've gained the matter of the seven killing.
- 19:26I want you to stay away from Susan, Nick McBride, well, just
- 19:30for my own information, gall ahead, what happens if I don't stay.
- 19:34I'm probably no match for your physically, but I warn you I won't let
- 19:38that stop me, and I suspect you're more deeply implicated in that seven killing
- 19:42then you admitted to the police. Huh. If you don't stay away in
- 19:45these times, it's full as possible. I'll keep at it until I find
- 19:48something which will intimidate you, and I'll stop at dating. You're really all
- 19:52out on this thing, aren't you? Yes? I am, well,
- 19:56this is really open house days. I guess I should have bordered some cocktail
- 20:00leaps. Hello McBride, Lieutenant ORSHATI, how's the police department? I'm on,
- 20:06I'm taking you in. You're taking me in the seven inquests tomorrow.
- 20:10I'm taking you in now. Why oh, a girl named the last George's
- 20:14chandlers Ward? What about her? He disappeared last night, That's what I
- 20:18heard. Look, I don't know where she is. We do. We
- 20:21located her this morning, and why don't you ask her where she's ben wouldn't
- 20:23do as much good. She can't answer. She's real dead. Lord McBride,
- 20:38you're gonna stay right here in headquarters until you open up. You were
- 20:42after the chandler's necklace. I still am. You figured to last it fake
- 20:45the fifth and that she had it. You knew you'd have to push her
- 20:48around a little together. That's hawk you pushed too hard. I told you
- 20:53once I didn't have anything to do with her death. I'll tell you again.
- 20:56I'll keep on telling you because it happened to be the truth. Assume
- 21:03what do you want I do? I just heard about the Chandler girl being
- 21:10killed last night. I understand the time of death was between midnight and one
- 21:14o'clock. What's all this got to do with you? Just that, mister
- 21:18McBride couldn't have killed Celess Chandler. He was with me all evening up until
- 21:22almost two o'clock. Well, wait a minutes, Wait a minute, you're
- 21:26willing to sweater that. Yes, you know what the penalty for perjury is.
- 21:30No, but I'm sure it's quite severe. How about McBride. You're
- 21:33telling the truth. You heard the lady. Okay, okay, I guess
- 21:38you can go. Then I'll have you. I don't get it at all,
- 21:51Susan. I'd rather not discuss it. I left your place around midnight
- 21:55for the cigarettes. That was gone almost half a night. I said I'd
- 21:56rather nothing, And yet you told or sorry that I was with you all
- 22:00evening. It really stuck your neck out for me. Baby, you know
- 22:03that? Yes? Why does it matter? Why? And may it does?
- 22:08Well? I because maybe it doesn't take more than one night, one
- 22:14date for a girl who's Oh, what's the good of talking about it?
- 22:18You're a nice girl, Susan, You're a real nice Macgillicutt was right,
- 22:23a gill cutter. He came to see me this morning, tell me to
- 22:26stay away from here. Well, I guess the right day to talk without
- 22:30this, and maybe you should. Yes, are telling me he doesn't have
- 22:33anything to worry about anymore. I don't ever want to see you again,
- 22:37Rich What are you talking about? Why not? And I wait a minute,
- 22:41Susan, do you think I did kill celat Dunton? I don't know
- 22:45what. I think you'll think that I killed her? And yet you gave
- 22:48me an alibi. A strange kid, Susan, Yes, let's just leave
- 22:52it at that. I'm a strange kid. Goodbye. Wait a minute,
- 22:56Susan, But I've got to seen as a chatter about a little unfinished business.
- 23:00Then you will no wrecks. I mean it. Goodbye, Oh almost
- 23:15McBride. I've been waiting for you. You said ten nights. I got
- 23:17to tame. You still want me to search celest room? Yes, more
- 23:19than ever an hour. They just told me about thee lest. If that
- 23:25necklace isn't her room and going to be discovered by anyone else, that would
- 23:27be a lot of terrible publicity. Yeah, here's the key. How shore
- 23:32you with her room here? That's to sixteen. You want to come in?
- 23:41No, I define not. I'll wait for you in my room.
- 23:42Okay, I'll check with it. No rights, Uh okay McBride, end
- 24:10of the line. Get up, plut with a head like mine. I
- 24:12don't feel like walking. You don't have to walk far. Just my front
- 24:15door. Who lives here? There's just a nice quiet place in the country.
- 24:19You'll love it. Hell oh McBride, Oh Haarah Sean o'harah. Sure
- 24:29I should have figured it. Sit down. Where's the necklace? McBride's necklace,
- 24:34the Chandler necklace? I want it? You think I got it?
- 24:37Uh, you're playing it really smart. Worn't the last squares? I gambling?
- 24:42That's by giving me the necklace, and she hires seven to hijacket for
- 24:45my strong box seven, So he's killing ties in after all, you killed
- 24:49seven and got the necklace from here. Okay, so you're a smart boy.
- 24:56Now let's at it. So it was celest who gave you the necklace.
- 24:57All along, i'd take missus can you're wasting my time, McBride.
- 25:00I should have spotted it. It's a channel he used to run around with
- 25:03you. She told me Celestia had a complex about wanting anything to belong to
- 25:07her. Are you, for instance? You're a real deep thinker, so
- 25:11you can probably figure out what's gonna happen to you if you don't turn over
- 25:14that next When you came to me last night with your phony deal, you
- 25:15weren't sure who had the necklace. He decided to pick up Celesti roughed her
- 25:19up trying to get her to talk, and you were too rough, she
- 25:22died. Okay, all right, but there's not going to bring any good.
- 25:29I don't have the necklace. Go on quite a while, McBride,
- 25:33I'll tell you it's not gonna bring any good you or something not gonna do
- 25:37you any good? Eat. Okay, I'll go ahead, a pleasure m
- 26:00Nine o'clock. How is heah? Ste a lot of le a light?
- 26:04They're not quite a while now, Okay, put him on a bed we'll
- 26:10let him rest a while. Okay, you stay here with him. I'm
- 26:14going downstairs. Right Uh, what's a matter of rugged? Boy? Not
- 26:22so rugged? Right now? Not so rugged? Too bad? Too bad?
- 26:26Look? Can you get me something for these cuts? And I think
- 26:29my hand is broken? Isn't there's a shame? Oh no, really,
- 26:33they take a look at it. I don't see anything wrong with quite.
- 26:37You stay there, face down, or I'll trill you with your own gun.
- 26:42Yell for o'harah. You heard me call O'Hara. Come on, songbird.
- 26:48You can do better than that. Say you can. Here he comes.
- 26:55I keep your mouth shut. What's the matter? How feels awful,
- 27:00doesn't it? Ohiah? Well, studdy, you've got O'Hara on ice.
- 27:11I think he can get the whole story of Celet's killing out of him.
- 27:15Yeah. Soon as I know o'harah didn't have that necklace, I realized that
- 27:19he wasn't the guy who killed seven. If he had, he'd gotten a
- 27:22necklace from the word. Does that leave you with the guy who had the
- 27:25perfect opportunity to kill seven and plant his body in my would the guy who
- 27:29knew I wouldn't be back until late last night? Mcgilly cuddy, the man.
- 27:32Sure. He figured I was just trenchant, so he thought he'd plant
- 27:36the body in my room. And he found out I was a detective working
- 27:38on the channed loacasion. He got worried. That's why he threatened me this
- 27:41morning and tried to get me to leave town. You know, mcred you've
- 27:45got a very annoying habit of leading it to empty hole. What do you
- 27:49mean? A little while ago I came up with the same idea about mcgilly
- 27:52cuddy. Right now, it's not doing as any good. Why not mcgilla
- 27:57cudd he's disappeared. Well, I hardly thought i'd be seeing you again,
- 28:11Rick, Well, I figured now you know, I wasn't a big,
- 28:14bad killer, Susan. He wouldn't slam your door in my face if I
- 28:17came over. So I'm really sorry. It's just thinking what I did,
- 28:21Rick, Oh, poor Arthur. I still can't believe he was capable of
- 28:26killing anyone from mc giller cutting. You'd a good hired first, but it's
- 28:30pretty large to go and you look back on it. He was in the
- 28:32perfect spot for him. Anyone who runs a joint like the Trojan Hotel keeps
- 28:37his ears pretty close to the wall, if I not, tull Less hired
- 28:41seven to hijack the necklace off o'harris, so he killed seven and grabbed the
- 28:44necklace himself. Well, I know it looks softly bad for him, but
- 28:47I just can't believe it. I can't help hoping that he'll come out of
- 28:49hiding and clear himself. M he isn't hiding, Susan. He's dead.
- 28:56Hush. How do you know That's the only way it figured? The Gillicutts
- 29:00and a weak sister all along, and you finally got to the point where
- 29:03even you couldn't pop him up anymore, Sophie, your own safety and not
- 29:07the more. I, oh, wretch, you can't know what you say.
- 29:11Pa your hands away from your purse, Susan, gun isn't going to
- 29:15do any good. No, well, no, you're not even funny anymore.
- 29:18I was just reaching for a cigarette. There are plenty right there on
- 29:19the table, baby, the ones you sent me out for last night so
- 29:22that your friend McGillicutty could run me down. It's not true. Then,
- 29:26when McGillicutty missed, you figured the smart thing was to cover up. That's
- 29:30why you gave me that Forney alibi for Celes's murder. Rick, Please,
- 29:33do you know none of this is true. It's just some horrible idea of
- 29:37a joke you had. Well, I know, Milton burw, but you've
- 29:40got no proof, no proof at all. Look, you haven't had time
- 29:42to get rid of a Gillicuddy's body, not as thoroughly as you intended to.
- 29:47He's supposed to have land with a necklace. And remember, so the
- 29:49chances are the body still in your car or Faday's looking at over right now
- 29:53that Susan dropped that gun, I'm going out of here. Wreck No,
- 29:57stand still, stand quite, put the gun down soon, stay away from
- 30:02me? Put it down, I said, stay away? Sorry mhm,
- 30:08pretty for trying. Now your timing is lousy or study you nearly got me
- 30:15killed? How about her? Did you have to hound? No? No,
- 30:18she's just taking a little nap. Well, don't you stand there with
- 30:22your bare face showing did you find the body? It isn't you? Yeah?
- 30:26Right, what you said? Oh speak of body? Baby? Here?
- 30:33Really isn't isn't He had the soul of an artist, Sney and wearing
- 30:38a Derby. Yet you have been listening to the first in a new mystery
- 30:55series, Here Comes McBride Darry Frank Lovejoy. The script was written by Bob
- 31:00Wright, based on the popular fiction characters created by Kleeve that Adam. The
- 31:06program was directed by Warren Lewis. This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
- 31:22Welcome back. Well, this was actually pretty decent. The air really
- 31:27was in nineteen forty nine was really flooded with the hard boiled detective and so
- 31:36even a decent show. I think that was solely written with a good star.
- 31:42I was going to have a time making it, but this was I
- 31:45thought pretty entertaining. The series also serves as a reminder of the limited relationship
- 31:52between the novels and the radio character. The character of Rex McBride in books
- 32:00is not particularly popular with a lot of critics of mystery fiction of the era,
- 32:05even though McBride was a contemporary of Raymond Chandler, who wrote Philip Marlowe
- 32:10who will be hearing in a few weeks. Critic Richard Moore said McBride was
- 32:15a Cretan famous for a statement that American gestopo is what we need. Marlow
- 32:23became the model for the future. The classic Tarnish Knight McBride, for the
- 32:28few who have read him, is one of the most repugnant characters in detective
- 32:32fiction history. Lessons learned. Well. To be fair, I should be
- 32:37clear that McBride wasn't calling for any sort of American Nazism, mainly calling for
- 32:45a secret police as powerful as the Gestapo in the midst of World War Two.
- 32:52Both of that's not a bad thing, but just to be clear,
- 32:54we're not miscommunicating. However, over a radio there's a limit to how a
- 33:00character can actually be, and certainly Rex McBride in this episode wasn't as anti
- 33:08social or difficult to say Pat Novak, which tends to define kind of the
- 33:14outer edge, and the same thing is true of my camera, who tended
- 33:17to be a bit more edgy and extreme in books, but not too extreme
- 33:23on the radio. So it's kind of an interesting contrast if you study the
- 33:28actual characters. All right, Well, on to some listener comments and feedback,
- 33:34and we begin with this from Mark. Thanks for your dedication to keeping
- 33:37this podcast going for so many years now. Most similar projects fizzle out within
- 33:43a year. I know I've done one myself once upon a time. That
- 33:46you've been doing going at this for the better part of a decade is truly
- 33:51noteworthy. Well thanks so much, Mark, and yeah this is I meant
- 33:54to mention it on the podcast, but March the third was the seventh anniversary
- 34:00of the first podcast I ever did related to old time radio. I've dofnere
- 34:06some political stuff, but that's an entirely different animal, and I think everyone
- 34:12supports really kept these going. Plus I like to see things through towards the
- 34:15end. Growing up as a kid, I was the one who would never
- 34:21concede a game, and I would get upset if you tried to quit a
- 34:24game before everything was played out. I have this belief in the importance of
- 34:30finishing. With Dragon and Superman, finishing is pretty easy with this series.
- 34:36You know, I think it's different. It's really I think a you know,
- 34:47it's just everybody's continued support enjoyment of the programs, plus the fact that
- 34:52there are more series that I can think of wanting to do that really keeps
- 34:58it going. And and again I appreciate all your remarks. And then just
- 35:04a simple note from Mirth who says, thank you. I've been listening to
- 35:07your show for a few years now and it brings me great pleasure. Well,
- 35:12I'm glad to assist and thanks so much. Appreciate everyone listening. We'll
- 35:17be back tomorrow with Nick Carter. Join us back here next Wednesday. We'll
