- 0:56encourage you, if you've not already, to pick up your copy of All
- 1:00I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet. It's my latest ebook. In
- 1:04it, I examine life lessons that can be learned from seven great fictional detectives,
- 1:12including Joe Friday, Johnny Dollar, and Poirot, with a nice sketch
- 1:21of the character's career and history. You can pick up your copy in the
- 1:25nook, Kindle or iBookstore. Also check out store Do Great Detectives dot net.
- 1:30I have All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet listed along with
- 1:34all my other books, ebooks and audio books. Well, now we launched
- 1:40a new series, Man from Homicide. Man from Homicide was not on the
- 1:45air a long time, only a few months in nineteen fifty one, and
- 1:49we're going to start with a episode that actually wasn't aired. It was an
- 1:57audition recording and it featured a different actor in the lead than would star in
- 2:02the series. The audition date is from September of nineteen fifty and it stars
- 2:12Charles McGraw. If you've been listening to the program Into Dragnet, McGraw was
- 2:17the first actor to portray at Backstrand, chief of Detectives, before being replaced
- 2:23by Raymond Burr after about a month. He got his start in acting with
- 2:29a lot of character roles, and probably his first key role was playing one
- 2:35of the hitmen in The Killers along with William Conrad, and from there he
- 2:42built a really successful career as a character actor. He played a lot of
- 2:46tough guys and heavies, particularly in the early part of his career, but
- 2:51later on he also began to play some lead roles, including starring as in
- 2:59the Adventures of the Falcon over television in the mid nineteen fifties. He also
- 3:04starred in The Narrow Margin, which many f B movie enthusiasts consider to be
- 3:10one of the best Bay movies of all time. This information, by the
- 3:15way, courtesy of Thrilling Days of Yesteryear Dot blogspot dot com, a site
- 3:22maintained by Ivan Shreeve. Well, now it's time for us to go ahead
- 3:30and take a listen to this audition. The original air date September sixteenth,
- 3:34nineteen fifty in the title The Winthrop Case. The Man from Homicide, a
- 3:52new dramatic series starring Charles McGraw as Lieutenant Dana. According to Webster's Underbridge Dictionary,
- 4:06homicide is the killing of one human being by another. According to a
- 4:14Man from Homicide, it's just the beginning of a dirty, dangerous job that
- 4:17doesn't end until a killer is found. But I like it, maybe because
- 4:21I don't like killers. We don't bother much with names. At headquarters.
- 4:41We give them a number and a file card. When they're in and the
- 4:44case is closed, we file a card and forget it. At least sometimes
- 4:47we don't forget that easy. The perfect cop would have a computing machine for
- 4:53a brain and a hydraulic pump for a heart. The perfect cop would never
- 4:57get hurt. I'm not a perfect cop. Terminal Street pitches up sharp from
- 5:02San Miguel Harbor. It's not the kind of street you'd be taking a walk
- 5:05on unless you were a cop like me. On a case that started with
- 5:09a dead man and a ditch, A dead man who collected too many ice
- 5:13picks. I walked up Turtle Street at night with only the shadows for company
- 5:17until get a hurry. Who do you want? Let's go inside where you
- 5:27just came from. I can. I gotta find a police new fond one
- 5:31you but no uniform that the city gives me a badge to carry around,
- 5:36Lieutenant Dana Homicide. Come on, I'm so glad you're here. I'm frightening
- 5:46garment. Sorry, I'm sorry, but we'll still have to go into that
- 5:49house. No door's locked. Let me have your key, all right?
- 5:59Never mind, turns out it wasn't lucked. It's nice to know you have
- 6:02a key. It's nice carpet. Yes, houses around here don't run the
- 6:11carpets often. You left the lights on the living room door on your left.
- 6:18Thanks. Why don't you sit down for a minute. Well? The
- 6:27corpse was male, white in its early thirties. What might have been a
- 6:30look of surprise and his pretty face probably meant nothing because of the two bullet
- 6:33holes placed less than an inch apart in his chest. The expression on the
- 6:38faces of the dead being incapable of verification. Corpse wore silk socks. Silk
- 6:45socks? Whose house I live here? That's what you mean? That isn't
- 6:50what I mean. It's a rendered house, the rent receipts being among his
- 6:55souvenirs. What's his name? Went Harold Winthrop? Claire thought, and all
- 7:01that suit he's wearing will never be the same. It's too bad. It's
- 7:04nice tail. I didn't kill him. I was in the kitchen mixing drink
- 7:08sports. I heard the shots man in Europe. I was frightened. I
- 7:12ran out to find a policeman. No surprised you to hear the actual figures
- 7:15on telephones and use in the city of this size. I was afraid to
- 7:19stay in the house. I should have phoned the police. I know in
- 7:23the kitchen, would you please? All right? I wonder how many men
- 7:29wearing silk socks ever walk up Terminal Street. The kitchen back doors wide open.
- 7:33I'll close it. I don't touch it, don't touch that knob,
- 7:38kick it. Shot the drinks. The ice cubes are beginning to melt.
- 7:45Was he married? Yes? The pretty ones usually are. You know,
- 7:49it's a funny neighborhood for a man wearing silk socks to be found dead in
- 7:54I'll bet he's embarrassed. The mills began to grind. I phoned in,
- 8:03and after a little while, during which none of us said anything me Claire
- 8:07Thorpe, the corpse company came a handful of educated cops who did things with
- 8:13fingerprints and bloodstains and photographs from nineteen different angles. The gun that killed Winthrop
- 8:18was among the missing. A special escort arride for Claire Thorpe. Alright,
- 8:24no, wait, she started to cry again. I decided to leave anyway.
- 8:30Somebody had to notify the new widow. She was a widow. I
- 8:37went down Terminal Street, the way Claire Thorpe had run, stopped at the
- 8:39garbage can she'd stumbled over. There was nothing in it but garbage. The
- 8:52wick lace covered what seemed like a couple of acres. The house undoubtedly had
- 8:56come over on the Mayflower. Even the trees look refined. I rang the
- 9:01bell and decided the next time I visited, i'd be sure and get my
- 9:03shoes shined. Yes, are you missus Winthrop, missus Harold Winter? I
- 9:11am it's late. Are you going to give me the weather report? Next?
- 9:16No? You mind if I come in I don't suppose I do.
- 9:22Come in. Thanks, we don't need that music. It's Mozart. Yeah,
- 9:28it's thirty nine in d I think. But you wouldn't know about that,
- 9:33would you. No? I wouldn't know anything about that. Would he
- 9:37turn it off? Please? Oh? Not important? Sometimes very important things
- 9:45aren't important. Why don't you sit down? Or is something you got?
- 9:50A big place here? My husband and I like it. Any children you're
- 9:56from the Census Bureau? No children? None? Okay, I'm glad you
- 10:03approved or were you approving? I'm Lieutenant Dana Homicide. Oh, I've read
- 10:09about your men in the papers. I'm very much impressed. I don't know
- 10:13exactly what I would have expected one of you to look like. I'm sorry
- 10:18I keep forgetting. You must have had a reason for coming here, beside
- 10:22the fact that it's late. I had a reason. Your husband isn't home.
- 10:26No, he's down on a sleezy shack on Terminal Street that's near the
- 10:31harbor. Am I supposed to ask you what he's doing there? You can
- 10:35if you're lying, all right? What is my husband doing in a sleezy
- 10:41shack on Terminal Street? He's lying on an imitation Oriental rug with a couple
- 10:43of bullets in his heart. You shouldn't wear your hat indoors, Lieutenant.
- 10:52I'm sorry, you won't mind if I don't try to squeeze out a tear.
- 10:56No, Hell hasn't meant anything to me for a long time. Alive
- 11:00or death hasn't changed that. It wasn't very much of a man. I
- 11:05suppose that's why he had to go slinking down back alleys trying to prove something
- 11:09to himself. Who killed him? Do you ever hear of a woman named
- 11:13Claire Thorpe? No, but he'd hardly tell me about her. Would he
- 11:18wear the servians asleep and home all evening? Missus Winn? What time the
- 11:20servants turned in? Around ten? What time was was Harold killed? Ten
- 11:28thirty? Good night, Missus Winter. Lieutenant Dana, Yeah, that question.
- 11:33It means I'm going to see you again, doesn't it. You might
- 11:39have answered that more quickly. All I meant was in the line of duty.
- 11:43You're beautiful, Missus Winter. If you're going to say things like that,
- 11:50better make it nearest. I ever came a silk socks turned out to
- 11:54be rare. Oh one thing more, Yes, Mozart's thirty ninth is an
- 12:01e flat good night. That first interview with missus Winthrop ascertained that she had
- 12:20no alibi for the time of her husband's murder, no grief for his death,
- 12:24failed to discover possible motive of any ignore. Female, white, middle
- 12:31twenties, dark eyes, olive skin, soft black hair. Cop would give
- 12:37his penchion to whiter around his hands. Heading south on Claremont, I picked
- 12:46up a trailing car in my rearview mirror. His left beam was weaker,
- 12:50which led to recognition. After half a mile. Proceeding south on Claremont,
- 12:54I swung my car across the road. I got out and was waiting for
- 12:58him. It was fumbling for the reverse when I got his door open.
- 13:05You're looking for me. Your car is blocking traffic? What traffic? I
- 13:09mean? I already missed that. Get out, I said, I said,
- 13:11get out. Who do you think you are? Who do you think
- 13:15I am? Okay, okay, turn around, all right, Dana.
- 13:18I give you that gun. You got a license for him? Who put
- 13:22you on me? Wouldn't you like to know? Guy who put you on
- 13:26me? You can't get away with beating You're a hood carrying a gun.
- 13:31Maybe I never heard I don't like hoods to pull a gun on me.
- 13:33I lose my temper with him. Stop it? Who put you on me?
- 13:39Ready? I know he owns the Avon Club, Roulette and dice the
- 13:45wheel square, but the dice are loaded. Let's go visit, Okay,
- 13:48I want to go in my car. No, no, my car.
- 13:52The city pays for the gas. The spoiler dried his tears beside me.
- 14:05I had thoughts about mister Reddick. The department had been interested in him for
- 14:07quite a while. Crooked gambler man had a string of hoods in the payroll,
- 14:13A man who may be seen to it that arrival wound up dead in
- 14:16the ditch puncture with ice picks. Also a man who liked women, not
- 14:20to mention vice versa. Oh me, Spoiler, you I can recognize with
- 14:28poton the expression the naked eye. Who's muscles? Lou Dana Benny social call
- 14:35Kappa. We'll leave it at then we'll do even better than that Kappa.
- 14:37You'll leave now, got a search wanting no goodbye, Coppa. Keep your
- 14:43finger off that buzzer. What isn't a raid? I don't care for right
- 14:46now? What's going on in the club. I'm visiting Reddick. He ain't
- 14:48in. I'm gonna try that again, but stop crowding me, Kapa.
- 14:54You don't like crowds, Benny. No, howould you like to join a
- 14:56crowd down at the lineup. You've got nothing on me. I can dream,
- 14:58Benny about a guy found dead, mad ditch, a guy on the
- 15:03receiving end of ice picks. Stanny was trying to muscle in on your boss.
- 15:07What's the matter, boy? Don't you boys believe in free enterprise?
- 15:13Down the hall? Dinner? Thanks? Come on? Spoiler? Yes,
- 15:24speak up, spoiler. Spoiler. Mister Reddi a man sweller. I thought
- 15:30you were supposed to. He is trailing me, trailed me right into your
- 15:33office. Ready, hellow lieutenant, other side of the door, Spoiler.
- 15:37Do we want to be alone? Lieutenant? We do, mister Reddick,
- 15:39he's got my ride. Oh, spoiler doesn't feel right without his protection,
- 15:45Lieutenant. Here's the license for that gun. Oh, pretty engraving. It's
- 15:48a shame I can't read. You could get in trouble taking the spoiler's gun.
- 15:52He could get in worse trouble. He's a little careless now that you
- 15:56men, mister Dan might fall. He beat up on me. Look at
- 15:58my face. It's swallow. I guess as you ever saw this? So
- 16:00right? Yeah, did something about it? You sent me after him,
- 16:03you know you? Spoiler Yeah, mister Ray Yeah, sure, okay,
- 16:07but mister right at you ain't sorry at me? No, I mean I
- 16:11couldn't say that. If you were sorry at me, I had out.
- 16:15I couldn't help it. If the guy it wouldn't have tried it. If
- 16:18I'd had a chance to get a gun on amy. Spoiler, how might
- 16:22talk to you? Is your gun? Catch? Now you've got a gun
- 16:26on me? I I out spoiler. Yeah, not a strong character,
- 16:36the spoiler. It wasn't a character analysis, a spoiler that brought you here.
- 16:40No, I don't want any trouble with you, Dan, I realized
- 16:42perfectly well that you can make trouble. But perhaps I should remind you that
- 16:47my clientele happens to be composed of some of the finest people in the city.
- 16:52You mean, the best healed? How was Harold Winthrop these days?
- 16:56Harold Winthrop? Oh? Yes, yes, he's patronized the club occasion.
- 17:00Mister Winter, Lieutenant is a gentleman of the highest social standing. The last
- 17:03time I saw him, he was lying down. Oh, I want a
- 17:07gun, Reddick, lose your own. The gun I want has two bullets
- 17:11missing bullets that wound up in Wintrop's chest. Oh, yes, yes,
- 17:15I can see why you would want that gun. Tell me where were you
- 17:19tonight at ten thirty reading a good book? How many witnesses? Three?
- 17:25I think the Spoiler Benny. Who's a third Claire Thorpe. Oh, she's
- 17:30the little blonde girl, isn't she. I heard tell you used to play
- 17:34together. She's the girl you picked up and booked Lieutenant at ten thirty.
- 17:38Ten forty Criminal Street is only a few blocks from here. Yeah, I
- 17:45hadn't realized that. Think about it. Three witnesses for her too, and
- 17:51I'm only one dumb copper. Goodnight, Reddick, good night. It was
- 18:07dark in the alley back of the gambling club. I was close to my
- 18:10car and maybe careless. Oh, they were peeling the layers of black melted
- 18:26off man. After a while I got him all off. The place was
- 18:33maybe twenty miles outside the city limits. I had a gun in my hand
- 18:37to mine. Maybe four feet from me, Spoiler was resting. I got
- 18:45up out of the sand and went over to him and decided he wasn't resting.
- 18:48A number of bullets had worn him down. Bullets out of my gun.
- 18:52I wasn't a good frame. It wasn't intended to be. Spoiler's death
- 18:56was insurance nuisance value on a consumed time. Wake up there? Oh hi,
- 19:07lieutenant, and right away Claire Thorpe, what about it? I want
- 19:10to talk to her. She's been sprung lou the angle maybeas corpus. No
- 19:15murder weapon on the premises, No way she could got rid of it.
- 19:18D didn't care for Why that's stupid, say Dave? Would you get malone
- 19:23on the first aid kit? Blug's tickling in the back of my neck?
- 19:26Hotly Macrol? Who slugged you, little boy? Blue? One thing more?
- 19:30Locate Winthrop's lawyer, find out who inherits hunh wellever you say? First
- 19:33thing in the morning. No, no, no tonight? He who was
- 19:37assigned to Clare Thorpe. Nobody's Taylor. We didn't think it was nobody.
- 19:41But find her, pappy, and find her quick. I sat around headquarters
- 19:55and waited. Bunty of reports came in. The weather was going to be
- 19:57fine tomorrow, Captain O'Malley a baby over in the sixteenth precinct. Missus Winthrop
- 20:03was the sole heir of the Winthrop estate. Nothing on claire Thorpe. The
- 20:07Department would turn her up in time, but I got tired of waiting.
- 20:11Maybe she'd gone back to the house on the Terminal Street. Oh, claire
- 20:27Thorpe had gone back to the house on Terminal Street, or keeps. I
- 20:33phoned the sergeant and I sat on a flimsy bench in front of the vanity,
- 20:37staring at my bandage in the mirror, stirring the Rochelle powder in the
- 20:41open box on the table. Claire Thorpe starting when the finger print boys and
- 20:51the meat wagon got there, I got out fast. By the time I
- 20:53got the reddis Club, the finest people he'd mentioned had gone home. I'm
- 20:57afraid you're a little late. Well, you're not kidding. I mean the
- 21:02club's closing. All these mink coats and no roulette. Yes, sir,
- 21:06my badge is going to look good compared to the gold braide you've got in
- 21:08your Eppelets a hop, Lieutenant Dan, if you want to be for him.
- 21:11I didn't not theree any other cops around there aren't any. But if
- 21:15this is a ray, it isn't all I wants, Reddick. He's busy,
- 21:18He's going to be busier. Look, Lieutenant, I don't want to
- 21:21get into this. I got a job. It pays off. You don't
- 21:22have to get into it. Where are they Well office down the hallway from
- 21:27the main room. But I didn't tell you. See, you didn't tell
- 21:32me. I like him, mister Redick. I love Brandy. Good evening,
- 21:45Dear dear Lieutenant lou Dana. Glad you remembered me from the last time.
- 21:51Betty. Take your hand out of your pocket shore copper, see gone,
- 21:55you got a license for it? Never mind, mister Reddick, will
- 21:57have one on file enough, Lieutenant, makes it nice and legal, checking
- 22:03in all the guns in the city of Lieutenant. Oh, I got a
- 22:04report for you from the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Indeed, yeah, yeah,
- 22:10indeed, the population of the city's dropped within the last couple of hours
- 22:12by two two. The spoiler. But that wouldn't be news to you,
- 22:17he said, two. Oh. Imagine my forgetting Claire Thorpe. Claire dead
- 22:23as dead as they ever get, and they get very dead. Redick.
- 22:26You had her sprung, yes, but that was brought her out in the
- 22:27open, the open, it's a good place to get shot. You have
- 22:30to do any further talk in my attorney. Oh, why don't you stop.
- 22:33I haven't got to wear ass on me, Harold Winthrop, the spoiler,
- 22:36Claire Thorpe. Let's think about the spoiler, Redick. He was my
- 22:41boy. Jappened to know he was dead. I don't bother Benny told you
- 22:44how, Benny, No, Benny shot him with my gun. Any wise,
- 22:47cop, I wasn't nice, especially when you had a gun of your
- 22:49own licensed and all spoiler fell down on the job. He let me spot
- 22:53him trailing me. He wasn't a strong character, so he died. You're
- 22:57doing fine. The rest is tougher, Reddick. You never were a big
- 23:03man, Now you are. I'll come. Meret is always recognized and reward.
- 23:07Oh yeah, in the copy books you moved up. When the heavy
- 23:10money boys started dropping in at your club. Why they were treated properly.
- 23:15They were rob blind. But what made them suddenly decide you were a nice
- 23:19boy to play with? Huh? Oh? No, wait, and I
- 23:22don't bother thinking up the answer. We got it from a Stooley weeks ago.
- 23:25The name is Winthrop, one of the oldest and classiest names in the
- 23:27city. I was proud to be numbered among his friends that case. Then
- 23:32you're the one to ask, what was a guy like that doing in a
- 23:34house in Terminal Street? Tenants you've seen Claire? Oh yeah, sure.
- 23:40Right after Winthrop was killed, she made a break from the house and ran
- 23:44into me. I took her back inside. Ready, before I did,
- 23:48she stumbled over a garbage can. Must have been nervous. Poor girl was
- 23:51smart. You know what she did. Ready, she got rid of a
- 23:55hot gun in that garbage can. Then all you had to do was search
- 23:57it. At the time, I couldn't know out the gun. Afterwards,
- 24:00all I came up with was garbage, just like a cop. She stuck
- 24:04her neck out. Why she was in love with you, That's why she
- 24:07must have thought she was covering for you. You had the house staked out.
- 24:11Somebody spotted her act fished the gun out of the can. That was
- 24:12Bennie. No, it was this correction spoiler. Who do I get for
- 24:18him? Reddick? Actually, as I told you before, I know nothing
- 24:22about the spoiler's death. It's a blow to me, Dana, a Faery's
- 24:25blow. I don't think you realize how much of a blow. They let
- 24:27a cessory smell of cyanaid gas just as quick as killers. I wasn't more
- 24:30enduring it after the fact, Reddick, No, I don't. What do
- 24:34I get for the spoiler Dana? I will admit that, well, one
- 24:38of my employees may have lost his head. Shut up, red I wouldn't
- 24:41know, of course, true, Benny did happen to go out for a
- 24:45while? What time was the spoilers shot? Roughly? That roughly is when
- 24:51Benny went out, mister Reddick, don't do that, well, Benny,
- 24:52I'm sorry. I'll get you the finest lawyer. You needn't worry about his
- 24:56fee. I'll take care of that. We must be sensible about this,
- 25:00Benny. I can help you dying. Let's have your gun, Benny.
- 25:04Why don't you come and get it? Copper? All right? I will
- 25:11better stop right with you are a copper. Maybe it ain't supposed to be
- 25:15smart blasting a cup. I want your gun, Benny, all right?
- 25:18Another step, just one step more, you get it. I don't mean
- 25:22the rod eater. I mean bullets and your belly. Your gun, Benny,
- 25:26No matter no matter what's wrong with you, you think bullets won't hit
- 25:29you you think you're different from other guys just because you're a cup. Well,
- 25:33you stop moving in on me. What's wrong with you? You?
- 25:37I'm lou Dana. Benny, all right, all right? Take it.
- 25:49I don't know, Benny, pick it up, hand it to me.
- 25:53Oh, thank you, Benny. You're coming with us? What all right,
- 26:03Lieutenant, I'll be glad to of course, it's only for a little
- 26:04while. I'll leave between you and the District Attorney's office. One thing more,
- 26:10Yeah, the other gun, Reddick, the one that was used on
- 26:11Winthrop. You're sure I have got it? What kind of a question is
- 26:15that? All right, Dana, it's in the drawer. Bet it.
- 26:22I'll take it. Be careful, don't take the handkerchief off that gun.
- 26:26They don't worry. I'll keep it warm. I took him down when the
- 26:38desk sergeant made marks on his brand new blotter. Benny Corolla alias Benjamin Carter
- 26:45alias Benjamin Wild, along with Vincent Reddick, was charged with murder the murder
- 26:48of a man referred to as the spoiler. We left the other desks off
- 26:52the blodder. A man can die only once, and then I got my
- 26:56shoes shined. Come in, Lieutenant, Dana, you'll have to overlook my
- 27:04dressing gown. I was just about to go to bed. I'm sorry,
- 27:07missus Winter. Lieutenant what's your first name? Oh? Why? I don't
- 27:12know. I just wanted to I don't know. That's not important. Let's
- 27:19not discuss things being important or are you being unkind and trying to remind me
- 27:25that I thought Mozart's thirty ninth was Indeed, Mozart's dead, yes, and
- 27:30so is my husband. But won't you call me Kate anyway? All right,
- 27:37never mind, I know you're here on business. All right, Lieutenant.
- 27:41You found out that I inherit Harrold's estate, haven't you. Yes,
- 27:45that's why you're here, isn't it? If that's for me? Yes,
- 27:48Babby uh? If I am all right, go back to sleep. What
- 27:56was that? Lieutenant? Further checked to find out just what it was you
- 27:59inherit, and you found out Harold Winter paid nothing to his name but the
- 28:03silk socks he died in. That's true. He wasn't killed because of anything.
- 28:07Anybody would inherit from him. Thank you. And now I suppose I
- 28:11don't interest you anymore in the line of duty, so he'll be going away.
- 28:21I like to tell you something first. All right, and your husband
- 28:25got shot. A girl named Claire Thorpe gave the gun that did the killing
- 28:27to Reddick. She was in love with him. She thought she thought that
- 28:32he'd killed her husband. I got that gun from Reddick was carefully wrapped in
- 28:36a handkerchief. Does that mean something? It means Reddick didn't shoot your husband.
- 28:41He would have been careful about preserving the prince on that gun if he
- 28:44had. You've got more to tell me. Yeah, way had set up.
- 28:48Your husband and Claire Thorpe were keeping house on Terminal Street. Your husband
- 28:52was steering all his rich friends to the Avon Club for a split of the
- 28:56take. Yeah, I can't believe that of Harold. Oh it's true,
- 29:00I suppose, but it isn't true. It isn't. But then somebody was
- 29:06keeping house on Terminal Street. Sure, but it wasn't Claire Thorpe because she
- 29:10had the whitest skin on a woman I've ever seen. I'm not especially interested
- 29:12in miss Thillip's attractions. On the vanity table in that house, there was
- 29:15a box of face powder. Rochelle bonds with very white skin. Don't use
- 29:21Rochelle brunettes. Do a brunette was keeping house with someone on Terminal Street.
- 29:26You're a brunette, Missus Winthrop. You were keeping house on Terminal Streak with
- 29:30Reddick. No, your husband found you there, didn't he? And all
- 29:33he found was death. I I don't think I'm going to say anything.
- 29:40Wouldn't do any good. We've got a date with the desk sergeant Missus Winter,
- 29:45all right. But he wouldn't want to take a girl to headquarters in
- 29:49her night clothes, would you? No? I wouldn't any won't mind if
- 29:53I get dressed in my bedroom? No, you shouldn't have ripped my dressing
- 30:03gown off. I had to make sure you were wearing street clothes underneath.
- 30:07You are. Claire Thorpe was killed only a little while ago. That finishes
- 30:11it, all right, But I wish you'd take your head off indoors,
- 30:19Lieutenant Dana. I'm sorry, Let's go, Katie. Katherine Winthrop was booked
- 30:38at the fourteenth Precinct for the murder of her husband Harolin for the murder of
- 30:42Claire Thorpe. Her prints on the murder gun clinched it. We gave her
- 30:47a file card and a number, and the eyes the warm lips the hair
- 30:56man and give his soul to get his hands on. Didn't mean a thing.
- 31:00I don't like killers. You have just heard the man from Homicide starring
- 31:18Charles McGraw. Mister McGraw appears by arrangement with RKO Radio Pictures Incorporated and will
- 31:25soon be seen starring in the Target. The script was written by Lewis Vitties
- 31:29and was produced and directed by Helen Mack. Music was composed and conducted by
- 31:33Robert Armbrewster. In tonight's cast, Reddick was played by James Bacchus, Kate
- 31:41Winthrop, John Banks, Benny Larry Dobkin, Claire Thorpe, Maggie Morley,
- 31:51Spoiler, Lamar Johnson, the Sergeant, I'm Tully, the Doorman, Harvey
- 31:57Q. Bryant, and Lieutenant Lou Dana Charles McGrath. Welcome back. Well
- 32:17a truly hard boiled portrayal here, and as portrayed, Dana definitely has ice
- 32:25water in his vein the kind of a tender sign. It kind of feels
- 32:30like a somewhat harder version of Broadway as my Beat. An interesting portrayal and
- 32:37also a very solid cast. One notable name was Jim Bacchus was known to
- 32:44most people who remember him as mister Howell on Gilligan's Island, but he also
- 32:50had had a rich history in radio, creating all of these amazing characters.
- 32:57I've mostly heard him in a comedy, but he's definitely did well in a
- 33:04dramatical and also found in that he starred in a few episodes of Casey Crime
- 33:10Photographer, but those episodes are actually lost. Well, that will do it
- 33:15for today. Join us back here tomorrow for the adventures of Philip Marlow,
- 33:22and next week we'll get into the episodes of Man from Homicide that were actually
- 33:27broadcast. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
