Transcript
- 0:00Hey, y'all. Continuing our series on the teaching authority will actually the authority
- 0:06in general of the church in matters of teaching, doctrine, governance. I
- 0:12will continue to read, view a few or discuss a few excerpts from my
- 0:18book Confirmation, Autobiography of Faith, and I think this is really interesting.
- 0:22You know, one of the biggest influences on me in terms of Catholic writers.
- 0:27Some of the other day said, you know the three a's Augustine A.
- 0:30Quintas. I'm blanking on the third right now, just like you know
- 0:34Rick Perry and the presidential debate, never say three things because you're only going
- 0:38to remember two of them. That was so cool when he did that,
- 0:41because Ron Paul, I mean, I love Rob Paul, and you know
- 0:44he talks like the the aunt on the Wizard of Oz and Rick Perry turns
- 0:49round Paul, He's like, what was the third thing? I don't know,
- 0:53could it be oil drilling? But you know, to really pretty good
- 1:02guys. Actually I don't agree with Rick Perry and everything, and are Ron
- 1:06Paullen on everything? But that was a real, you know, kind of
- 1:08Texan to Texan moment when they with a legitimate human concern or the other one
- 1:14trying to help him out. So that was actually one of my favorite moments
- 1:18from a presidential debate. And I sure miss Ron Paul being in the mix
- 1:22because just about everything he predicted has come true, military industrial complex, the
- 1:27death of the dollar, etc. Etc. And Yeah, I've been too
- 1:33libertarian for me on some things, but I do tend to consider myself more
- 1:36libertarian than a Republican, but conservative more than either. So anyway, let's
- 1:42get into one of this books that really influenced me and continues to influenced me
- 1:47of the day. I keep reading it over and over. Father Spiago Spirago,
- 1:53who knows you know, he wrote a book Hunting exhaustive explanation of the
- 1:57Catechism, and I think, like the eighteen nineties, and you want to
- 2:01talk prescient, his chapters on society, on the rise of socialism, social
- 2:07democracy, social democrats. I mean, he called him out by name as
- 2:13being anti Christian, a political system built on the first sin, the sin
- 2:19of Satan, which was envy. That's what socialism, communism, liberalism is.
- 2:23It's envy and saying you have a right to what another person has earned.
- 2:29That's the first sin. And yes, it is actually quite satanic.
- 2:36I say liberalism as a mental disorder. It may actually be worse than that.
- 2:40It is satanic. Actually. You know, we'll get into that at
- 2:45some point. We'll talk about the seeds of the French Revolution, how horrific
- 2:50it was. We'll talk about the Bolsheviks, we'll talk about the modern Democrat
- 2:54Party and the Chinese government and everything in between. But today on religious topics,
- 3:00I mean Attorney's father's parago. And he had a way of saying things
- 3:05so very concisely. Even though his book is like seven hundred fifty pages.
- 3:09He actually was quite man. He could hitch him with the truth and say
- 3:15it in a way that really gets your attention. He said. In regard
- 3:21to the structure of the church and the authority of the church, he said,
- 3:27the ministers of the church fall into three classes of distinct dignity and power,
- 3:30Bishops, priests, and deacons. These were foreshadowed in the High Priest,
- 3:35the priests and the levites of the Temple, as well as on our
- 3:38Lord, the apostles and the disciples. To the apostles, our Lord said,
- 3:44as the Father has sent me, so I send you to the disciples
- 3:47merely go behold, I send you. It's very important. You know,
- 3:51I said yesterday how one of the biggest mistakes Protestants make, and probably some
- 3:55Catholics too. I don't need to just single about the Protestants on this um.
- 4:00They actually, you know, obviously tend to be more biblically literate than
- 4:02many Catholics, which is a real shame. And you know, popes and
- 4:08many of our great church leaders have instructed Catholics to read the Bible and to
- 4:14it's an ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of God. What was that,
- 4:17Pope, Piously, I don't know, a tempt night. I'm not sure
- 4:21I think that's who it was. Um. And of course Saint Pope,
- 4:26Saint John Paul a second said it many times, Benedict, you're supposed to
- 4:30read your Bible. Well, the mistake is thinking that everything in the Bible
- 4:35is applicable to every person. No, Jesus actually specifically said to his apostles,
- 4:42as the Father has sent me, so I send you. He who
- 4:44hears you hears me. He who rejects you rejects the one who sent me.
- 4:47That is great authority. He only invested that in the eleven apostles at
- 4:54that time, and then Saint Matthias who replaced Judas. No one else had
- 5:00that authority. Yeah, I mean you could say Saint Paul would have been
- 5:02included in that group as well, as he said, as one untimely born,
- 5:09he was, you know, in a different sort of a different category
- 5:12than the others. But to the disciples, which were his other followers,
- 5:17he didn't give that power. And like I said, Bob Smith, reading
- 5:23the Bible today does not have the authority Jesus gave to his apostles very important,
- 5:29especially if you drive through rural areas in the South, you'll see like
- 5:31Church of God and Pentecostal Church. He will say, apostle John Powers is
- 5:35going to speak today. That man's not an apostle. He doesn't have a
- 5:40right to that title. Jesus names his apostles. He gave his apostles the
- 5:45ability to bind and loose, the ability to ordain bishops and priests. You
- 5:53know, they don't have that. No one has that because the authority comes
- 5:59from Jesus himself, to the specific twelfth fathers. Farago goes on to say
- 6:04the apostles were sent to all nations of the earth the disciples only to those
- 6:08places where the Lord himself was to go. The bishops are nally as successors
- 6:13of the apostles. That's according to the Council tread. Hence, the bishops
- 6:16are of higher rank than priests because they belong to a higher order of the
- 6:21clergy and have higher orders. Besides that, they have greater powers, being
- 6:27the only real pastors of the flock, and in virtue of their jurisdiction deciding
- 6:31how for anyone else, how far anyone else may share in the government of
- 6:39those committed to their charge. The bishops alone can give orders, says Saint
- 6:43Germe. That's what three hundreds right. According to Saint Cyprian, he is
- 6:47the only ordained minister of confirmation. The bishop used to be the only one
- 6:55that could confirm new Catholics. They have delegated that responsibilit the priests, mainly
- 7:01just simply because America is such a big country. The bishop just can't be
- 7:05in all the parishes. But in the eighteen nineties, the bishop, and
- 7:11that's still true in many churches, but in certain circumstances, with the permission
- 7:15of the bishop, the priests can ordain. And I was actually the priests
- 7:20can confirm. Sorry, the priest can confirm. I was confirmed by my
- 7:25priest, not in the Easter season, believe it or not. I spoke
- 7:30with my priest, and at the time, my job had me traveling all
- 7:33over the state and I never knew what church I was going to be in
- 7:36on a Sunday, And he said, you have a specific circumstance. I'm
- 7:41going to call the bishop. He got on the phone with a bishop.
- 7:44He said, you know, this member of soon to be member of my
- 7:46parish needs to be confirmed. Can I go ahead and do it today?
- 7:50That was a surprise, and so we go to the church. There were
- 7:54literally three people that showed up for a week day mass that stood as witness.
- 8:00And I and my mother were both ordained just before Christmas, so really
- 8:07really unique circumstances. I'm very grateful to Father Gober for doing that. Father
- 8:13Christopher Gober great person. He made that happen when most priests wouldn't. He
- 8:18also understood I couldn't go to r r CIA classes because I couldn't be in
- 8:24town on a regular schedule. I was working in journalism, and he sat
- 8:31with me and we went through the Catechism and the teachings of the church,
- 8:35and he said, okay, you're good to go. So priests can have
- 8:39a great leeway, but only under the authority of the bishop as father.
- 8:46So Farrago goes on to say, the Council Trent assigned to bishops many other
- 8:50privileges beyond those enjoyed by other members of the church. In addition, they
- 8:54have a judicial vote in counsel's Priests rank higher than deacons, having higher orders
- 9:01and greater powers. They can offer the holy sacrifice and forgive sins, as
- 9:05commanded by Jesus Christ himself. Yes, my Protestant brothers and sisters, Jesus
- 9:11Christ said, those who sends you forgive, they are forgiven. Those who
- 9:16sends you retain, They are retained. If you do not believe in going
- 9:20to a confession to a priest, you disobey the words of God. They
- 9:26have higher orders and greater powers. They can offer the holy sacrifices, the
- 9:28euchasts. They can forgive sins, as I said, while deacons can only
- 9:33baptize, preach, and give communion, help hand out the Euchrist. This
- 9:39hierarchy was in force in the time of the Apostles. That's why this is
- 9:43so germane to this conversation. We see in the scriptures Timothy appointed what Timothy
- 9:50appointed with powers to judge priests. We see in the scriptures that Timothy was
- 9:54appointed with power to judge priests. That's verse Timothy, verse nineteen. Ordain
- 10:00them first Timothy, verse twenty two, and to appoint them to various cities
- 10:05Titus I think book five, I'm not sure. Saint Ignatius of Antioch in
- 10:09one of seven a d just very early, you know, one of the
- 10:13very first church fathers. You have to remember the church was only about seventy
- 10:18years old at the time. Okay, seventy four years old, names the
- 10:22three orders. He says, let all obey the bishops as Jesus obeyed the
- 10:26Father. Let them obey the priests as the apostles, and honor the deacons
- 10:31as being messengers of God. Did you hear that? Listen to the bishops
- 10:35as if they are Jesus, because they speak with Jesus's authority. Let all
- 10:41all obey the bishops as Jesus obeyed the Father. Let them obey the priests
- 10:46as the apostles, and honor the deacons as being messengers of God. Similar
- 10:52expressions occur in Clement of Rome, Saint Clement we quoted yesterday one d even
- 10:58you know earlier, really the first of the church followers to do a lot
- 11:01of writing, and Clement of Alexandria in two seventeen eight D. There was,
- 11:07however, a certain vagueness in the use of the terms apostles. Priests
- 11:11were called elders or overseers. The former title ODIs origin to the Jewish converts,
- 11:16the latter to the Heathen. In every community there were several priests,
- 11:20according to First Timothy fourteen first time of the book, four chapter fourteen.
- 11:26If I'm sometimes I have trouble reading my own writing, sorry, my handwriting
- 11:33is abominable, abysmal. I'm actually trying to learn to do a little calligraphy
- 11:37just so I can write legibly. It's not going well. Seriously, anyway,
- 11:43of whom one was the superior high priests, known in later times as
- 11:48a bishop. He was often called priests merely because he was in reality a
- 11:52priest. Even the apostles Peter and John called themselves priests. That's first Peter
- 11:58and John two anyway, The episcopal and priestly office was instituted by Christ himself.
- 12:05The deaconate by the apostles. The deacons. The deacons were appointed by
- 12:09the apostles to distribute alms and were consecrated to this duty by the laying on
- 12:13of hands and accompanied with prayer. Again, I know in the Methodist Church,
- 12:20for er, they have people called deacons, and the Presbyterian Church they
- 12:22have people called they're not deacons because they're not ordained by priests who were ordained.
- 12:28Going back to the apostles, there is no authority. Always ask yourself
- 12:33by what authority and if the authority doesn't come directly from Jesus, not some
- 12:37guy who picked up the Bible and came up with a completely different idea of
- 12:41it than Jesus and his apostles taught, or that was believed by the church
- 12:45for over a thousand years, fifteen hundred years, they have no authority.
- 12:50I know that's hard to understand. I know that's hard to accept because it
- 12:54really goes against our American ethics of all people, you know, essentially being
- 12:58equal. All people aren't equal. If you think all people are equal,
- 13:03all right, go play against a basketball against a professional basketball player. If
- 13:07you're not a professional basketball player, he's got the skills. You don't go
- 13:11play golf against Tiger Woods or somebody. He's got the skills, you don't.
- 13:16Those skills were given to him by God and cultivated by his hard work.
- 13:20It's really pretty insane when we think that Jesus said this is my kingdom,
- 13:26and he appointed officers in his kingdom. For someone to come up and
- 13:30say, well, I'm gonna start my own kingdom and I'm going to call
- 13:33it the Kingdom of Jesus. Jesus didn't say you could do that. The
- 13:37Bible doesn't say you can do that. That's one of the biggest fools.
- 13:41He's a Protestantism that anyone can read the Bible and will understand it. The
- 13:45Bible, itsel says, you won't. You remember the Eunuch. We'll get
- 13:50to that. You know, he's going along, he's reading the Bible.
- 13:52I can't remember which of the apostles ran and caught up with him and said,
- 13:56do you understand what you're reading? He said, how can I unless
- 14:00someone explains it to me. That's in the Bible. You can't understand the
- 14:05Bible because it's written in very archaic and difficult languages. In language in several
- 14:11chapters, I mean think about the Book of Revelations. People have come up
- 14:13with a million different interpretations of the Book of Daniel, the Book of Revelations.
- 14:18You have to have a church with authority to teach, guaranteed by the
- 14:22Holy Spirit, authorized by Jesus Christ, to understand the Bible. Anyway,
- 14:31let's see that by laying of hands. We said that deacons were consecrated by
- 14:37the laying on of hands by the apostles and priests. They also had spiritual
- 14:43functions preaching, as in the case of Saint Stephen, who was a deacon,
- 14:46baptizing, and as in the case of Saint Philip. In early ages
- 14:50there were also deaconesses. There were female deacons, Yes, there were,
- 14:54all you feminists. To get so upset, They were widows who tended the
- 14:58sick and taught young girls. They were not part of the hierarchy. Since
- 15:03it was a fixed principle of the church that no woman should preach. That's
- 15:07in First Corinthians. What is that fourteen thirty four? No woman should preach.
- 15:15That's why we have male priests. That's why women have specific roles in
- 15:18the church, such as nuns and teachers and Catholic schools, not preachers.
- 15:22They can be catechists, but they can't. They can teach, but they
- 15:26can't preach. Sorry, if that offends you, that's what God said to
- 15:30do. If you've got a problem with it, take it up with God
- 15:33because you okay, And it says in First Timothy that's because the woman is
- 15:41subject to man and was first led astray in paradise. You don't like it,
- 15:46take it up with the Bible, all you Protestant, female Methodist ministers
- 15:52and Anglican Episcopal ministers. The Bible says you shouldn't have that office. You
- 15:56don't like it, well, are you writers God right? If you're right,
- 16:02then God's wrong. If God's wrong, he's not God. Your whole
- 16:06ministry is a farce. I know, I know. There are many many
- 16:11PRIs and female ministers. You have no right to that position, according to
- 16:15the very words of the Bible. Yes, it's controversial. I'm sure it's
- 16:18going to upset you. There are many roles you have. Specifically, the
- 16:23role of motherhood is the highest office on earth. I mean, someone said
- 16:30the other day, I think it was a quote from Saint Augustine. Perhaps
- 16:36it said he said, don't worry about loving Mary too much because you can't
- 16:41love Mary more than Jesus loved his mother. We actually, as Catholics,
- 16:45respect motherhood and the Mother of God more than any other denomination on earth.
- 16:52It's certainly not anti feminists, but each person has a role. Just as
- 16:56I can't be an apostle, just as I can't be a priest. I
- 17:00mean, I'm not going to go to the seminary and go through all that
- 17:04rigorous obedience and be ordained as a priest. I'm not going to. I
- 17:07can't. I can't do the Euchrist. No, only a priest can.
- 17:14I can't forgive sins. Only a priest can. Neither can you. Well,
- 17:18I can't do it because I am not suited to be a priest and
- 17:23that's not my calling. You can't do it because neither of you. Because
- 17:27you're a woman, and that's what God said. So you can love God,
- 17:33you can teach, you can write, you can debate men to defeat
- 17:37me in probably many debates. That's fine that you are absolutely authorized to do.
- 17:44But you can't give the Euchrist. You can't call yourself a priest,
- 17:47and you certainly can't be a bishop. Sorry, life isn't fair, but
- 17:51that's the way it is. Besides these three classes, there are other degrees
- 17:56varying in their powers, for example, Pope, cardinals, and archbishop.
- 18:00The distribution of authority is the basis of this classification. All without exception o
- 18:07obedience to the pope. The bishop rules all clergy and his diocese. The
- 18:11clergy are in authority over those committed to their charge. That's first Peter five,
- 18:18five Hebrews eight seventeen. The Church has its differences of rank like an
- 18:22army. According to the Council of Trent. Without these grades, it would
- 18:26be a society without organization. And the Church is organization. I mean a
- 18:32lot of really French producing groups say there's no church and they only have house
- 18:36churches, and there's no ministers and whoever is led by the spirits and preachers.
- 18:41God is not the God of disorder. God is the author of creation.
- 18:45God is the ultimate order. Disorder, disunity, disharmony are always always
- 18:53in conflict with the will of God, always without exception. That is of
- 18:57the devil Father's Paragua went on to say, he instructs us in the teachings
- 19:03of the Catholic Church. The unction which we have received from him teaches us
- 19:07of all things. That's a quote from First John to twenty seven. Whoever
- 19:12has not the Holy Ghost may indeed study the truths of the Christian religion,
- 19:18but their significance escapes him. It is an unfruitful knowledge. You receive a
- 19:23measure of the Holy Spirit at baptism. You receive the full measure of the
- 19:27Holy Spirit when you're confirmed into a Catholic church. That is also in the
- 19:33Bible. It says that until the apostles laid their hands on those who have
- 19:37been baptized, they did not receive the Holy Spirit. Why do so many
- 19:41Protestants get things wrong and have female ministers and gay ministers and all that approve
- 19:48of gay marriage, deny many of the teachings of Christ, like confessing to
- 19:53a priest, or being baptized, or receiving the Eucharist, etc. Because
- 19:57they don't have the fullness of the Holy Spirit. There are many spirit filled
- 20:00Protestants, but the most holy spirit filled Protestant will never have the fullness of
- 20:08the Holy Spirit that the least intelligent or aware Catholic receives in the sacrament of
- 20:18confirmation. That's what the Bible says. Again, if the Protestants want to
- 20:26believe in the Bible is the sole authority. How about believing the words of
- 20:30the Bible, He says, just as a book cannot be read in the
- 20:36dark without the help of a light, so the word of God is unintelligible
- 20:40without light from the Holy Ghost. Though it is quite true that whatever the
- 20:44Holy Ghost imparts to us is free from error, yet we require to be
- 20:48certain that what we have received is indeed imparted by the Holy Spirit. Hence,
- 20:52no matter what a man's lights may be, he must keep fast hold
- 20:57of the teachings of the Church. And whoever fails to do this has not
- 21:02the Holy Spirit in him. That's First John four six. If you do
- 21:07not hold fast to the teachings of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church,
- 21:12you do not have the Holy Spirit in fullness within you. You will not
- 21:18be prevented from error. The minute Martin Luther, for instance, rebelled against
- 21:27the Church, he lost all certainty of understanding the very Bible he essentially worshiped,
- 21:37almost as an idol, but changed to suit his will to become a
- 21:42reflection of his doctrine. He could no longer understand. And that's actually pretty
- 21:48sad isn't it. There is a great amount of evidence for the presence of
- 21:53Saint Peter in Rome from the year forty four to sixty nine. Saint Peter
- 21:57writes about the year six the church that is in Babylon. Babylon was code
- 22:03word essentially saluteth you and so doth my son mark. Babylon was the name
- 22:07given to the early Christians to Rome on account of its great greatness and immorality.
- 22:12At that point, Christians in Rome were being fed to lions. Many
- 22:18again, fringe Protestant churches say that because Rome is the seat of Saint Peter's
- 22:23Basilica and the Vatican, that's the horror of Babylon. No, Actually,
- 22:30that was pagan Rome. That was pagan Rome, that was persecuting Christians.
- 22:33And if frankly, if you just opened a history book, you wouldn't really
- 22:38have any doubt the pagan Rome before it became Christian Rome under the Holy Roman
- 22:47Emperor's Charlotte Main and constantin all that was a very wicked place, very wicked
- 22:52place. And after that it became a seat of Christiandom, without which you
- 22:56would not even have the Bible or your Protestant church. So that's so called
- 23:02horror of Babylon. You keep claiming that we are worshiping. You don't have
- 23:07a church without it either, So you better open a secular history book and
- 23:11get it straight, or you're well again. You're undermining your own faith,
- 23:17not mine. Pope, say Clement Rights of Rome about the year one hundred.
- 23:25You know Peter and Paul were with an enormous number of Christians martyred in
- 23:29Rome. They were killed for their faith. Tertullian, a priest of Carthage,
- 23:34about the year two hundred, congratulates the Church of Rome because Peter died
- 23:38there crucified like his lord, and Saint Paul died like another John the Baptist.
- 23:44In other words, one was crucified and the other was beheaded. Saint
- 23:47Peter, if memory serves, was crucified upside down because he said he didn't
- 23:52deserve to be crucified with the dignity of Christ. In addition, the grave
- 23:56of Saint Peter was long ago discovered. His body laid a catacomb under Nero's
- 24:02circus. The third Pope erected a small chapel over it, to be replaced
- 24:06by the beautiful edifice built by Constantine in three twenty four when this fell into
- 24:11disrepair. The present building of Saint Peter's was erect in sixteen twenty nine.
- 24:15As I said yesterday, the Basilica of Saint Peter's is built on the bones,
- 24:21on the very grave of Saint Peter. He is the rock upon which
- 24:26Jesus built his church. His church is literally sitting on his bones. The
- 24:32apostles always play Saint Peter first Matthew ten two, Mark one thirty six,
- 24:37Acts two fourteen, etc. And Saint Paul, after his conversion, regarded
- 24:41as his duty to present himself to Saint Peter Escalatians one eighteen two two.
- 24:48I think Saint Peter was Bishop of Rome for some twenty five years and died
- 24:52bishop of Rome, and the dignity and power of Saint Peter descended to the
- 24:56succeeding bishops of Rome. The Bishops of Rome have always exercised supreme power in
- 25:02the church, and that power has always been acknowledged. When dissensions arose in
- 25:07the Church of Corinth about the year one hundred, Remember we talked a lot
- 25:11about Corinth yesterday. The matter was referred not to the apostle Saint John at
- 25:15Ephesus, but to the Bishop of Rome Saint Clement. About the year one
- 25:19ninety the Pope Victor commanded the people of Asia Minor to conform to the Roman
- 25:23usage in the celebration of Easter. That's right again, regardless of what the
- 25:30tour observe at Christians say. Christians were celebrating, and the Seven day Abbas
- 25:34and the Jehovah's witnesses, they all seemed to consider Easter a pagan holiday,
- 25:41even though it's the day we commemorate our Lord being raised from the dead.
- 25:45Pope Victor wrote extensively about it in one ninety a d and those who demurred
- 25:51were threatened with excommunication, whereupon they yielded. About the year to fifty popes.
- 25:57Stephen forbade the Bishop Shops of North Africa to rebaptize those who returned to
- 26:03the bosom of the church. I remember, you're only baptist once one baptism
- 26:07for the units of sins, and he excommunicated those who resisted. The Bishop
- 26:12of Rome had the first place in all general councils. When heresy broke out,
- 26:17the Bishop of Rome always inquired into it, and to him other bishops
- 26:21appealed when unjustly oppressed. Thus when Saint Anthon Nazius, I think is how
- 26:26you pronounced it was deposed by the Emperor. The Pope reinstated him. From
- 26:30the earliest time, the title's High Priests and Bishop of Bishops had been given
- 26:33to the Bishop of Rome. When at the Council of Chalcedon the letter of
- 26:37Pope Leo has read these to the assembled bishops, they cried out with one
- 26:42voice. Peter has spoken by Leo. Let him be anathema who believes otherwise,
- 26:49cut off anathema which, like Saint Paul said, give that man over
- 26:55to the devil if he will not listen to the Church. It's a little
- 26:57harsher, isn't it. That's the Bible again, you know, good reason
- 27:02to read the Bible. That's why I base so much all of my book
- 27:06essentially on the Bible and the writings of the very first church fathers, the
- 27:11early Church Peter. See the Vatican Council declares that it is the will of
- 27:15Christ that till the end of the world there will be successors to Saint Peter.
- 27:19Upon Saint Peter Jesus founded his church, the gates of Hell will not
- 27:23prevail against it. It will be a shining city visible to all ages.
- 27:27It's the only institution in humanity that has lasted for two thousand years since Jesus
- 27:33said that unchanged, and it will be visible until the end of time,
- 27:41until the apocalypse the second coming of Jesus. The Catholic Church will not fail,
- 27:45will not teach error, because it's guaranteed by the Holy Spirit, and
- 27:49it will be visible. As for the authority to make such decorations, he
- 27:55explains, citing I think First Timothy three fifteen, and measures decided upon the
- 28:00apostles and the Council Jerusalem were introduced with the words for it has seemed good
- 28:04to the Holy Ghost and to us Acts fifteen twenty eight. It is no
- 28:10reas of belief that the Church is infallible long ago origin rights as in the
- 28:15heavens. There are two great sources of light, the Sun and the moon,
- 28:18which barrows its light from the Sun. So there are two great sources
- 28:22of our interior light, Christ and the Church. Christ is the light of
- 28:26the world and shares his light with the Church, and she enlightens all the
- 28:30earth. In the words of Saint Irenaeus, which I believe is right around
- 28:36two hundred eighty or so, where the Church is there is also the spirit
- 28:41of God. The Apostles in the year fifty one held the First Council Jerusalem
- 28:47and announced their decision is coming from God. The first four general counsels.
- 28:52Saint Gregory the Great asserted that he held them in equal honor with the four
- 28:57Gospels. Why not the very apostles wrote those gospels. You can't have it
- 29:03both ways. The Church either has authority to write the Bible infallibly and to
- 29:08teach infallibly, or it doesn't, and if you don't believe it does,
- 29:12you can't believe the Bible, and therefore you can't believe Jesus, and you
- 29:15can't call yourself a Christian. The consensus of the bishop through living apart,
- 29:19though living a part of the time, was infallible, because the Holy Spirit
- 29:25is not confined by limitations of place. We'll get into that a lot more
- 29:27later when we talk about saints and such. Nor was this solemn declaration necessary.
- 29:33It was quite sufficient that all the bishops told teach in the same sense
- 29:37in regard of any given subject, to make that teaching infallible where it otherwise
- 29:41the Church would be capable of teaching heresy or falling away from the truth.
- 29:45Hence, the Vatican Council declared that not only must one that, not only
- 29:49must that be accepted which has been solemnly defined by the Church, but also
- 29:55whatever is proposed by the lawful and general teaching authority. The Pope makes an
- 30:02infallible definition when his teacher and guide of the Church, he proposes to the
- 30:07universal Church a doctrine of faith or morals. These decrees are called doctrinal.
- 30:12The Vatican Council of eighteen seventy decree that all doctrinal decisions of the Pope were
- 30:17infallible. This is the logical consequence of the words of Christ. Saint Peter
- 30:21thou Art Peter out upon this rock, I will build my church. If
- 30:25the foundation of the church were to fail, it would not be a rock
- 30:27but quicksand very good point. Moreover, Saint Peter was appointed shepherd of the
- 30:33apostles and the faithful in these words of our Lord. Feed my lambs,
- 30:37feed my sheep, and he received the power to confirm his brethren in the
- 30:40faith. Luke twenty two thirty two. I believe, if then the Pope
- 30:45were to teach error, our Lord's promise would come to naught. Decisions and
- 30:49matters of doctrine were held in the greatest reverence from the earliest times. When
- 30:53the Roman Sea condemned in four seventeen, the areas Pelagius, Saint Augustine and
- 31:00cried out, Rome has spoken. The cause is at an end. As
- 31:04Saint Cyprin says, no heretic can gain admitutes into the church, admitts to
- 31:11the church. I should say, even general councils call the Bishop of Rome
- 31:15the father and teacher of Even general councils call the Bishop of Rome the father
- 31:19and teacher of all Christians. That's from the Council Florence fourteen thirty nine.
- 31:25And the Roman Church the mother and teacher of the faithful, that's Council of
- 31:29latter in twelve fifteen. The Pope must be infallible for this reason too,
- 31:33that he has full power to govern the whole church Council Florence again, for
- 31:37with this power is necessarily linked the authority to teach. The supreme teaching office
- 31:42of the Church involves infallibility in according with the divine province of the assistance of
- 31:48the Holy Ghost. In consequence of this decision. In consequence of this the
- 31:52decisions of the Pope are infallible of themselves, quite independently of the consent of
- 31:56the bishops. It's according to the Council of the Vatican. Were it otherwise,
- 32:00the rock or successor of Saint Peter would derive its strength and solidarity from
- 32:05being raised upon it the Church. It would, however, be quite wrong
- 32:08to a search that the Pope is infallible in all things, for he is
- 32:12a man and can make mistakes as other men. In writing speaking center,
- 32:15I mean the Pope is only infallible in official Church teachings on doctrine and morals.
- 32:22It's the only thing he could be, you know, in Pope Francis,
- 32:27who seems to stick his foot in his mouth every other day. Sorry
- 32:30if that offends you, but he does not a very clear speaker. He
- 32:34has not changed the doctrine of the Church. I realize there are those that
- 32:37do not believe he is a valid pope regardless to this point, and certainly
- 32:45have no reason to believe otherwise, given the teachings of the Church, that
- 32:51the one who does sit on the chair of Saint Peter will be prevented from
- 32:53all error. We've even had some a couple of really bad popes. You
- 32:57know, in the history of the church, they were not allowed by the
- 33:00Holy Spirit to change the doctrine or moral teachings of the church. Neither has
- 33:05been Francis. And actually he came out the other day and said that homosexuals
- 33:12shouldn't be admitted into priestly orders. But was pretty obvious. Obviously we've had
- 33:20with the scandals we've had with you know, pres molesting little boys. He
- 33:25said that they should not go to seminary, and that is boy, that's
- 33:31going to rot the liberal forces in the church, the satanically liberal forces that
- 33:39have been trying to undermine such teachings. That was pre darned surprising. Actually,
- 33:46okay, he said, And unhappily some of the popes led very scandalous
- 33:53lives. When it was like two of them that were really bad. Actually,
- 33:57it's not too bad in the space of two thousand years, especially given
- 34:01that one of Jesus's own hand picked apostles was Judas. Will always have some
- 34:07bad ones. When the pope gives a decision on a doctrinal matter, it
- 34:09is Christ who keeps him from error by the agency of the Holy Ghost.
- 34:14Moreover, the bishops are always consulted before any decision is made. Doctoral decisions
- 34:20are usually accompanied by a sense of excommunication against those who refuse to submit to
- 34:25them. Again, once the Bible say, if a man will not listen
- 34:30to the Church, let him be to you as a heathen. Yeah,
- 34:36there is a church with authority. Hence, such decisions are binding for all
- 34:40Catholics, really for all Christians, if you think about it, all the
- 34:45Pope is infallible in his solemn decisions. General counsels are not for that reason
- 34:49superfluous, for they can confer a greater external soleimnity of the Pope's decrees,
- 34:53and the teachings of the Church can be more thoroughly examined in these counsels.
- 35:00The Church pronounces infallible judgments in the following cases on doctrine, on faith and
- 35:05morals and their meaning and interpretations on the Holy Scripture. Again, the only
- 35:09reason you have that Bible, Protestant friends, is because of the Catholic Church
- 35:14and tradition and their interpretation and their interpretation. If, for instance, the
- 35:19Church declares that the punishments of hell are eternal, the declaration is infallible,
- 35:23for this has made a doctrine of faith. Or again, if it declares
- 35:28that the observance of Sunday is a command of God. The declaration turns on
- 35:32the teaching with regard to morals and is therefore infallible. Yes, shall you
- 35:37try or observant Christian Seven Day adventice Messianic Jews, the Church with the authority
- 35:44of Christ, says we observe Sunday, not the Jewish Sabbath, and that
- 35:50is infallible, guaranteed by God. If you don't believe it, you don't
- 35:52believe in the apostles, and you really don't believe in Jesus. Christ made
- 36:00special a special promise to his apostles that the Holy Ghost should teach them in
- 36:06all truth John sixteen thirteen all truth. If the apostle has got it wrong,
- 36:12you have no foundation for your faith. In other words, that the
- 36:15Holy Ghost would teach them all truth bearing on religion, and that religion includes
- 36:20morality as well as the belief may be gathered from the words of Christ just
- 36:22before his assent into Heaven, going therefore teaching all nations, teach them to
- 36:27observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And with regard to the last
- 36:32order, he promised in the Assistant the assistance of the Holy Ghost and consequently
- 36:37infallibility. Since the Church derives her doctrine from two sources, holy scripture and
- 36:43tradition, that's the oral tradition of the apostles just as valid as the Bible.
- 36:47The Bible just happens to be what they wrote down, it must be
- 36:51infallible in its interpretation of both. Moreover, it is certain that the Church
- 36:55is infallible what it declares, that any given opinion or on faith or morals
- 37:00is contrary to revealed teachings. As also in the canonization of the Saints.
- 37:06It is the common opinion of theologians that the Church is infallible and judging whether
- 37:09a proposition is opposed to revealed teaching it. For example, the Church where
- 37:14condemned the assertion that man is the offspring of a pair of apes is concentrated
- 37:19to revelation, it would be acting quite within the limits of its infallibility,
- 37:23and on a subject most intimately conducted with revealed doctrine. Again, I tell
- 37:30you fathers Barago was quite prescient. I mean here he was condemning the man's
- 37:37descent from the apes, the evolutionary Darwinism, and what the eighteen nineties.
- 37:43I mean he was very aware of what was going on in the world.
- 37:45If the Church can see truth, it must also be able to recognize error.
- 37:50From the earliest times, the Church is condemned error, whether taught by
- 37:53writing or word of mouth. At the Council of Nicia in three twenty five,
- 37:59errors of areas were condemned by the bishops. Up to the present day,
- 38:02the Pope has continually condemned books which have attacked faith or morals. Yes,
- 38:07the Church used to ban books. It authored a exercise censorship if it
- 38:13said a book such as the Communist Manifesto would undermine people's faith and cause them
- 38:19to be atheists and to overthrow legitimate governments. It said, Catholics, you
- 38:25shouldn't read this book, and people used to respect that. I am not
- 38:30a free speech absolutist. I don't believe the devil's lies should be spread.
- 38:37I don't believe children should be reading books pornographic books in school. You know
- 38:44I'm not for I'm not saying you can't write a book. I'm saying it
- 38:47can't be published. But just as we say school children can't shouldn't be reading
- 38:52pornography and explicitly sexual or books advocating drug use or suicide. School childrens not
- 39:00be reading books that tell them go home and kill yourself. The church has
- 39:04that same authority over its flock, and it has the ability to say,
- 39:07look, y'all, look at fellow Catholics, this book is not good for
- 39:10your soul. Don't read it. And it's up to you whether you follow
- 39:15that or not. And if you don't follow it, you're committing a sin.
- 39:20But if the book is bad in the first place, to enjoy reading
- 39:25books on you know, about violence and perverse sexual behaviors and all that,
- 39:30that's sinful in the first place. The church really doesn't even need to say
- 39:34that. This is really a pretty ridiculous debate, but it's very much in
- 39:38the news these days. It's pretty ridiculous at all. Truth, I mean,
- 39:45Christian morality has stood for two thousand years, and now we're just supposed
- 39:50to accept there is none. Do whatever you want and watch the society fall
- 39:53apart, the family fall apart, kids coming suicide, people overdosing on drugs.
- 39:59But hey, it feels good to it right anyway. So y'all on
- 40:07tomorrow, if we continue on this topic, bensil what comes up between now
- 40:13and then we'll talk about what the Bible says about the governments of the church,
- 40:15and yeah, it's not going to lead much doubt so, as always
- 40:21in the words of Saint Piter, pray, hope and don't worry. Have
- 40:25a great evening and I will talk to you tomorrow
